[1:16] Speaker 2: Threatened Danger were Greener. Hello, is this Steve Granger.
[1:47] Speaker 3: Yes it is I'm calling from Paula.
[1:52] Speaker 2: Hell, yeah, I haven't seen you for a long time.
[1:55] Speaker 4: I called you invite you up to say hey over
[1:57] Speaker 4: the weekend. Are you free to come up?
[1:58] Speaker 2: Certainly? Am you okay?
[2:00] Speaker 4: The six thirty five tree off this afternoon, I mean
[2:02] Speaker 4: the station.
[2:03] Speaker 3: I'll be there, Paula certainly won't be a treat to
[2:06] Speaker 3: get a nice relaxing weekend let me tell.
[2:08] Speaker 2: You what it means.
[2:10] Speaker 4: It might not be so relaxing.
[2:22] Speaker 5: Granger over here.
[2:24] Speaker 2: Oh hi, Falla, wonderful to see you again.
[2:31] Speaker 5: Bring your luggage, I got the car.
[2:33] Speaker 2: Okay, Hey, you certainly look like a million faller.
[2:37] Speaker 5: I can't see I feel that way. That's why I
[2:40] Speaker 5: got you up here.
[2:40] Speaker 2: You mentioned the weekend might not be relaxing. What's the trouble? Beautiful?
[2:44] Speaker 5: Twice so far this week, somebody's tried to kill me.
[2:50] Speaker 3: It's a Steve Granger, private detective with a story set
[2:53] Speaker 3: in a luxurious lakeshore country home, a beautiful setting for murder.
[2:58] Speaker 3: In just a moment, I'll take you back to one
[3:00] Speaker 3: of my most interesting cases. Paula Crane, who had invited
[3:11] Speaker 3: me to spend the weekend with him, was a girl
[3:13] Speaker 3: in her late twenties, strictly the park avenue type, the
[3:16] Speaker 3: kind the columnists referred to as glamorous in shorts on
[3:20] Speaker 3: the top. She could cause the average professional swimming suit
[3:23] Speaker 3: advocate to go back to the old fashioned nitress. And
[3:27] Speaker 3: this was the girl whom somebody had tried to dispatch
[3:29] Speaker 3: from this weary world two times. I made a pull
[3:34] Speaker 3: a car up before we got to her place. Now, Paula,
[3:40] Speaker 3: let's hear about these two attempts on your life.
[3:42] Speaker 5: Well, the first was about a week ago. I got
[3:45] Speaker 5: up early to take a swim in the lake and
[3:47] Speaker 5: I was about halfway across to the little island in
[3:49] Speaker 5: the middle of the lake when I heard a shot
[3:52] Speaker 5: and there was a splash in the water near me.
[3:54] Speaker 5: I dived under a state underwater as long as I could,
[3:57] Speaker 5: then made the island and hid in some bushes till
[3:59] Speaker 5: I saw my mother and Richard come down to the
[4:01] Speaker 5: beach on the mainland.
[4:02] Speaker 2: It was Richard.
[4:03] Speaker 5: Well, when father died, mother remarried a man named Arthur Loomis.
[4:09] Speaker 5: He had a daughter, Anne, and Richard is Anne's husband,
[4:12] Speaker 5: my brother in law. They're all up with the cottage
[4:14] Speaker 5: just now, I scept for my stepfather. He's away on
[4:16] Speaker 5: a business trip.
[4:17] Speaker 2: Well, let's get back to the shooting. What happened after
[4:19] Speaker 2: you saw your mother and Richard on the beach, I.
[4:21] Speaker 5: Waved to them. Richard called out and asked if I
[4:24] Speaker 5: wanted him to come out and roll me back. I
[4:26] Speaker 5: said no, and about an hour later I started to
[4:28] Speaker 5: swim back to shore. That was when the other shot
[4:32] Speaker 5: was fired.
[4:33] Speaker 2: You see, Well, let's get this car started.
[4:36] Speaker 3: Seems to me that the sooner i'd take a look
[4:38] Speaker 3: around fair Haven, the butter.
[4:54] Speaker 2: Well, this certainly is a beautiful spot.
[4:57] Speaker 5: There's the cottage up ahead.
[4:58] Speaker 3: Call it a cottage. Looks like a country club. See
[5:02] Speaker 3: how many rooms have you got in that hotel?
[5:05] Speaker 5: Fifteen?
[5:06] Speaker 2: I wonder what the poor people are doing.
[5:08] Speaker 5: Well, there's mother coming towards us. Don't say anything, please,
[5:11] Speaker 5: of course.
[5:13] Speaker 6: Well, darling, is this your friend?
[5:16] Speaker 5: Yes, mother, I'd like to present Steve Bringe.
[5:18] Speaker 2: How do you miss Lomas?
[5:20] Speaker 6: Not that at all, Not that at all, mother, Really tall,
[5:24] Speaker 6: dark attractor, my mind.
[5:27] Speaker 5: I'll show you to your room. Then, perhaps you'd like
[5:29] Speaker 5: to go for a swim before dinner. Well, don't tell
[5:32] Speaker 5: me you're afraid of the water. Besides, I want your
[5:35] Speaker 5: opinion on a new breathing suit I have.
[5:37] Speaker 3: I'll break out my judge's badge and be with you
[5:40] Speaker 3: in five minutes.
[5:43] Speaker 5: We'll grainge here. I see you're ready for your swim.
[5:45] Speaker 2: Yeah, how do you like my suit?
[5:47] Speaker 3: You don't go around in public like that, though, Why,
[5:49] Speaker 3: it's nothing.
[5:50] Speaker 2: That's exactly what I mean.
[5:56] Speaker 3: After I swim, Paula and I dressed drove into the
[5:59] Speaker 3: village for dinner.
[6:00] Speaker 2: I got back around ten.
[6:01] Speaker 5: Thanks for a wonderful evening. Just having you around makes
[6:05] Speaker 5: me feel secure.
[6:06] Speaker 2: Thanks. Paula, lock your door. I watched the girl walk.
[6:13] Speaker 3: Into a room, heard the click of the lock. Then
[6:15] Speaker 3: I turned into my own room, snapped on the light,
[6:17] Speaker 3: and started untacking my bag. Then I just sat by
[6:21] Speaker 3: the window and listened to the calm, peaceful night sounds.
[6:32] Speaker 2: Why, Paula, I thought you were in bed.
[6:34] Speaker 5: Come to my room, please right, be quiet. I don't
[6:40] Speaker 5: want to awaken anyone.
[6:50] Speaker 2: Well, what's wrong.
[6:52] Speaker 5: It's my cat? Look over there?
[6:56] Speaker 2: Is it dead?
[6:57] Speaker 5: She just died very strangely too.
[6:59] Speaker 2: Oh.
[7:00] Speaker 5: I always have a glass of milk at night. The
[7:02] Speaker 5: cook puts it in my room. Tonight when I've walked
[7:04] Speaker 5: in here, Junior, that's the cat was on a night
[7:07] Speaker 5: stand lapping up the milk. Almost a third of the
[7:09] Speaker 5: glass was gone.
[7:11] Speaker 2: I'd over in a nightstand.
[7:12] Speaker 3: Now, yes, first you shot at Now someone puts poison
[7:16] Speaker 3: in your milk.
[7:16] Speaker 5: I told you somebody is trying to kill me.
[7:22] Speaker 2: I'll continue in this interesting story in a minute.
[7:33] Speaker 3: This was not exactly a putty situation. Paula's cat lying
[7:36] Speaker 3: stiff on.
[7:36] Speaker 2: The floor of a room. I'll tell you a curiosity.
[7:39] Speaker 3: Killed the cat, but this one got his by being
[7:40] Speaker 3: greedy and diving at the milk left for his mistress.
[7:44] Speaker 3: Paula broke out one of the cars and we drove
[7:45] Speaker 3: into the village to the drug store. Luckily it was open.
[7:48] Speaker 3: The druggist, who fancied himself as a chemist, made a
[7:50] Speaker 3: quick check on what was left of the glass of milk.
[7:53] Speaker 3: He came back wearing a face as sober as of pallbearers.
[7:56] Speaker 3: Miss Porter, there's enough er sennek in this glass to
[8:00] Speaker 3: kill off a whole family.
[8:04] Speaker 2: It was a pretty scared girl.
[8:05] Speaker 3: And I drove back to the cottage and saw into
[8:07] Speaker 3: her room, making a careful check of the room. First,
[8:10] Speaker 3: I warned her to keep her door locked. Then I
[8:13] Speaker 3: went poison hunting. This was one of the four bathrooms
[8:18] Speaker 3: the house affected. I went over other medicine chest from
[8:23] Speaker 3: aspirins to toothpotter, no poison of any kind, and made
[8:26] Speaker 3: the rarms of remaining three bathrooms.
[8:28] Speaker 2: They were as empty of poisonous Old mother Hubbard's covered.
[8:32] Speaker 3: Down in the kitchen, I went through all the cabinets,
[8:34] Speaker 3: from apples to apricots to anchovies.
[8:37] Speaker 2: No arsenic through a window.
[8:39] Speaker 3: I noticed the garage and went that way. When I
[8:47] Speaker 3: got there, I moved inside further around for a light
[8:49] Speaker 3: switch inflicted on. This was a five car job, was
[8:55] Speaker 3: only slightly smaller than the ours itself. The cars in
[8:58] Speaker 3: it went from the fifteen undred dollar price to the
[9:01] Speaker 3: category where one doesn't mention money because it's so distasteful.
[9:07] Speaker 3: Then I found a garden cabinet on one side of
[9:09] Speaker 3: the garage on a shelf. I saw it sitting between
[9:12] Speaker 3: a garden spray and a hand trowel. It was insect
[9:15] Speaker 3: potter and contained arsenake. I started back to the house.
[9:22] Speaker 7: All right, you gave your hands.
[9:25] Speaker 2: Now what walk ahead of me?
[9:26] Speaker 7: Up at the house?
[9:27] Speaker 2: One moment? Who are you? You don't walk off? Shoot you,
[9:30] Speaker 2: Paula Crane's brother in law.
[9:32] Speaker 3: Just walk at all, because if you are, I might
[9:35] Speaker 3: mention that I'm a new house guest.
[9:37] Speaker 2: Steve Granger.
[9:38] Speaker 7: If you're a house guest, you're doing sneaking around the garage.
[9:41] Speaker 7: What were you going to do with that packet of
[9:43] Speaker 7: bug poison or.
[9:44] Speaker 3: Some ants in my room? I figured there'd be some
[9:46] Speaker 3: insect poison around. I found it back there. It's on
[9:49] Speaker 3: my way to the house.
[9:50] Speaker 2: I'm supposed to believe that. I see no reason why not.
[9:54] Speaker 2: Let's wake up Paula. She'll identify me.
[10:00] Speaker 4: Well.
[10:00] Speaker 3: I looked very surprised to see me at the receiving
[10:02] Speaker 3: end of a gun, but recovered enough to introduce her
[10:03] Speaker 3: brother in law, formerly as Richard Terrace. We wait until
[10:07] Speaker 3: she closed and locked her door, and then Terrace and
[10:09] Speaker 3: I went downstairs for a nightcap.
[10:17] Speaker 2: You are grang yup. Thanks, I'm sorry I acted the
[10:19] Speaker 2: way I did. Forget it, will you?
[10:21] Speaker 7: You see, I've been perturred recently. I'm a very light sleeper,
[10:24] Speaker 7: and I've been prowled around.
[10:26] Speaker 2: Have you seen any of them? No? How long has
[10:28] Speaker 2: this been going on? For? About a week?
[10:33] Speaker 7: Well, I'm going to bed, how about you?
[10:35] Speaker 2: Yeah? Me too.
[10:36] Speaker 7: Oh I'm going to give you a hand with that
[10:38] Speaker 7: bug poison.
[10:39] Speaker 3: No, no, thanks, Sure, I can take care of that madam myself.
[10:47] Speaker 3: My night's sleep was a restless one. After the rumble
[10:50] Speaker 3: of Manhattan twenty four hours a day, the night sounds
[10:52] Speaker 3: up here sounded terrifying as a jungle. In the morning,
[10:57] Speaker 3: I took a sample of the insect power and the
[10:58] Speaker 3: glass that held the poisoned milk. Went down to the
[11:00] Speaker 3: village had them wrapped and addressed to a certain place
[11:03] Speaker 3: in Manhattan. Then I got to a telephone. I made
[11:05] Speaker 3: a call him, my newspaper friend, Carol Hendrix.
[11:09] Speaker 2: Rick, Hi, and those.
[11:10] Speaker 4: Sound eeezie boy, what the heck are you doing in
[11:13] Speaker 4: fair Haven?
[11:14] Speaker 2: Kind of out of your class, isn't it? Yeah?
[11:16] Speaker 3: You think only you guys ever get up amongst the
[11:18] Speaker 3: big stuff. Huh Say listen, cal I want you to
[11:22] Speaker 3: do me a little favor. Okay, sure, anytime, Steve, you
[11:24] Speaker 3: know that, send me down a little parcel addressed to you.
[11:27] Speaker 2: I want you to take it down to the lab.
[11:29] Speaker 2: Do I sniff a little.
[11:30] Speaker 4: Bit of funny business going on among those million dollar baby.
[11:32] Speaker 2: You might got a long enough nose.
[11:35] Speaker 4: What golfer cap brother Hendrick wants.
[11:37] Speaker 2: The story, You'll get it if there is one.
[11:39] Speaker 6: It's a deal.
[11:44] Speaker 3: I put the package containing the poison glass and the
[11:46] Speaker 3: insect powder on the next mail train, then went back
[11:49] Speaker 3: to Paula Crane's cottage. A mother informed me that she'd
[11:52] Speaker 3: gone to a girlfriends for the day.
[11:58] Speaker 2: This was evening.
[11:59] Speaker 3: Mother, Richard Terrace, his wife Ann, and I were sitting
[12:02] Speaker 3: on a wide porch.
[12:03] Speaker 6: You've seen preoccupied, mister Granger for me.
[12:06] Speaker 2: Oh, I was just just dreaming. I guess.
[12:09] Speaker 6: I'm glad you came up to visit Cala. She's been
[12:12] Speaker 6: rather unhappy lately. If I didn't know her so well,
[12:15] Speaker 6: I think she was as rough. She certainly displays all
[12:18] Speaker 6: the systems.
[12:19] Speaker 2: Wonder where she disappeared to when she came home. She
[12:22] Speaker 2: went right up to her room.
[12:24] Speaker 6: Mister Granger, if you want to play Romeo, you'll find
[12:28] Speaker 6: her down at the lake.
[12:29] Speaker 3: Shore her thanks, and I can take her head to
[12:32] Speaker 3: Wait Granger, I'll go along.
[12:34] Speaker 2: How about you, Anne?
[12:35] Speaker 6: No, thanks, I'll stay here.
[12:37] Speaker 5: I'm beginning to catch a cold.
[12:39] Speaker 2: Take care.
[12:42] Speaker 7: You've known Paula for some time?
[12:44] Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, I met her in New York some years back.
[12:46] Speaker 2: I feel sorry for her. She hasn't been the same
[12:49] Speaker 2: since her father died. Oh, there she is Paula Cara Company.
[12:53] Speaker 4: I love it.
[12:55] Speaker 5: Come over and sit down, you through, especially you Grangers?
[12:58] Speaker 2: Well thanks?
[13:00] Speaker 5: How do you like it out here?
[13:01] Speaker 2: Love it? Love?
[13:02] Speaker 3: It brings out the Daniel Boone and me. All I
[13:05] Speaker 3: need is a canoe, my rifle and three Indians.
[13:07] Speaker 5: We have everything but the Indians. Oh do you have
[13:10] Speaker 5: a match?
[13:11] Speaker 7: Sorry, I'm fresh at I'm not too, Will you mind Granger?
[13:15] Speaker 7: There is some in the living room at the house.
[13:21] Speaker 2: Moving back to the house, something struck me.
[13:23] Speaker 3: I thought I remembered seeing Richard Terrace pick up a
[13:26] Speaker 3: pack of matches just before we walk down, the meat fallowing.
[13:30] Speaker 3: As I neared the house, I could hear the voices
[13:33] Speaker 3: of missus Loomis and Anne.
[13:35] Speaker 2: I stopped.
[13:36] Speaker 8: I'm telling you for the last time, I'm not trying
[13:38] Speaker 8: to put.
[13:38] Speaker 5: Up with it any longer.
[13:39] Speaker 6: Three and I won't listened to another word.
[13:41] Speaker 5: Yes you will.
[13:42] Speaker 8: I thought it might stop when she brought Steve Granger
[13:44] Speaker 8: up here.
[13:45] Speaker 5: She Kevin knows he's good looking in.
[13:46] Speaker 6: Her for the last time, I don't want to hear anymore.
[13:49] Speaker 5: Otherwise, don't you face it. She's been trying to cause
[13:52] Speaker 5: trouble between Richard and me ever.
[13:53] Speaker 6: Since we were married.
[13:54] Speaker 5: Did she hates me?
[13:55] Speaker 6: And if you wish to continue this ridiculous conversation, that
[14:00] Speaker 6: looked one thing. Paula is in love with Richard. She's
[14:03] Speaker 6: always been in love with Richard before you two were married.
[14:06] Speaker 6: And I might add this, You married Richard while Paula
[14:09] Speaker 6: was abroad on a trip.
[14:11] Speaker 8: Are you intimating that I tel Ritchard away from her?
[14:13] Speaker 8: And it certainly looked like it very well I did,
[14:18] Speaker 8: and I'm going to keep Richard even if something happens
[14:20] Speaker 8: to Paula, and I sincerely.
[14:21] Speaker 5: Hope it does.
[14:25] Speaker 3: Sometimes you can be just plain lucky, like this time,
[14:28] Speaker 3: overhearing a bit of a conversation that throws a sudden
[14:30] Speaker 3: revealing light on things. Because if ever I heard cold
[14:34] Speaker 3: hatred in the girl's voice, I heard it. Then in
[14:36] Speaker 3: Anne's just a minute, I'll bring you the climax of
[14:39] Speaker 3: the case. Things seem to be clearing up a little bit.
[14:52] Speaker 3: The talk I overheard between Anne and Missus Lunath seemed
[14:54] Speaker 3: to provide the motive for the attempts on Paula Crane's
[14:57] Speaker 3: life was a lucky thing that Richard Terras had sent
[15:00] Speaker 3: me back for some matches. I sneaked into the house,
[15:04] Speaker 3: came up with some matches, and moved back towards the
[15:07] Speaker 3: lake without being seen.
[15:09] Speaker 2: There was a rustling noise behind me.
[15:11] Speaker 3: I crept into the shadows as quiet as a bird
[15:14] Speaker 3: dog flushing at quail.
[15:16] Speaker 2: It was Anne Terrace, a slim little.
[15:18] Speaker 3: Shadow, who slipped behind a convenient tree to do a
[15:21] Speaker 3: little eavesdropping.
[15:23] Speaker 2: I decided to do the same thing.
[15:25] Speaker 5: Richard, we simply can't go on this way. I can't
[15:27] Speaker 5: stand it.
[15:28] Speaker 7: Palla, you're acting very foolishly about this whole thing.
[15:30] Speaker 5: In the morning, you're going to ask for a divorce.
[15:32] Speaker 7: I told you twenty times I don't want a divorce.
[15:34] Speaker 7: I'm not going to get a divorce. And I want
[15:36] Speaker 7: you to let me alone think it.
[15:37] Speaker 5: Over the knife and meet me on the island at
[15:39] Speaker 5: seven o'clock in the morning. And Richard, yes, you have
[15:42] Speaker 5: your choice, be there or be sorry.
[15:47] Speaker 3: I watched Anne Terras, who had taken in every word,
[15:49] Speaker 3: slop past without noticing me. I hung around a bit longer,
[15:54] Speaker 3: gave Paula Crane and Richard Terras a head started, and
[15:57] Speaker 3: moved back to the house myself. In my room, I
[16:01] Speaker 3: suddenly felt a first as I helped myself from a
[16:04] Speaker 3: water pitcher on the night stand. I thought about the
[16:07] Speaker 3: triangle that existed in this house, a thoroughly unpleasant one
[16:11] Speaker 3: involving a married couple of the stepsister. This would be
[16:16] Speaker 3: a good time to see Paula Crane. I started to
[16:21] Speaker 3: get up and never made it. I looked at the moon,
[16:24] Speaker 3: which must have gone Pixie because it was moving in
[16:26] Speaker 3: a slow, tight circle. I shook my head from this time,
[16:29] Speaker 3: the lonely lunar eye was doing a figure eight.
[16:32] Speaker 2: I tried to get up once more.
[16:34] Speaker 9: But uh, yeah, yeah, what is it?
[16:46] Speaker 5: It's me, mister Granger.
[16:48] Speaker 6: Aren't you coming down to breakfast?
[16:51] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, missus Louis in the morning, of course, right,
[16:58] Speaker 2: I'll be right down. I got up.
[17:02] Speaker 3: My mouth felt like it had been rinsed with a
[17:04] Speaker 3: blows water from a hundred year old schooner, and I
[17:06] Speaker 3: realized I'd been mickeyed with a capital thin.
[17:09] Speaker 2: But I made it to the breakfast room.
[17:11] Speaker 6: Sit down, mister Granger. Have some coffee.
[17:14] Speaker 2: Thanks morning, Richard. Morning.
[17:18] Speaker 6: Do you feel bad this morning, mister Granger?
[17:21] Speaker 2: Oh I feel wonderful. It's wonderful.
[17:24] Speaker 5: We use that hand, Richard.
[17:25] Speaker 7: I don't know she's gone up somewhere.
[17:27] Speaker 5: Morning.
[17:28] Speaker 6: Everybody, now, darling, don't tell me that you feel bad,
[17:32] Speaker 6: too awful.
[17:34] Speaker 5: Just like I've been drugged.
[17:36] Speaker 2: Did you say drugged, Paula? I did?
[17:38] Speaker 5: And I want some air. Stranger hop out going for
[17:41] Speaker 5: a canoe ride the exercise?
[17:42] Speaker 3: Are doing you good, young woman? If I wiggled my eyebrows,
[17:45] Speaker 3: my head had fall off.
[17:46] Speaker 5: Come on, you need sunshine, Granger. Somebody jiped us all
[17:56] Speaker 5: last night, didn't I?
[17:58] Speaker 2: They did? If we all drink water.
[18:00] Speaker 5: We all apparently did. There's a fresh picture of water
[18:03] Speaker 5: placed in each realm nightly.
[18:05] Speaker 2: First your cat gets it with the milk.
[18:08] Speaker 5: First I was shot at correct.
[18:10] Speaker 2: Then the cat Anonymus had drugged.
[18:13] Speaker 5: Why you're at the detective you tell me?
[18:16] Speaker 2: I think it might be Anne.
[18:18] Speaker 6: Why do you see that?
[18:19] Speaker 2: Let's come out into the open fall. You got a
[18:22] Speaker 2: stepsister who hates you.
[18:23] Speaker 5: Whatever gave you that idea?
[18:25] Speaker 3: Two conversations I overheard one between Anne and your mother,
[18:27] Speaker 3: the second between you and Richard Terrace. You overheard that
[18:30] Speaker 3: little lady you're asking for trouble and heard it too.
[18:32] Speaker 5: I'm glad I hate her. Richard and I were going
[18:35] Speaker 5: to be mad when she moved in.
[18:36] Speaker 2: It's the same. Are in the wrong and you know it. Say,
[18:41] Speaker 2: doesn't somebody live on the little island?
[18:43] Speaker 5: No, why you got a.
[18:45] Speaker 2: Picture of the doll and the white bathing suit.
[18:47] Speaker 5: That must be Anne. She probably left the house early
[18:49] Speaker 5: and swam over here.
[18:50] Speaker 2: Let's turn around and go back.
[18:52] Speaker 5: No, I've got something to say to Lanne, and it
[18:55] Speaker 5: might as well be now.
[19:00] Speaker 2: And mind if we come over it must be sleeping.
[19:07] Speaker 5: Come on, Stranger, that spot in a white suit? Is
[19:16] Speaker 5: she dead?
[19:19] Speaker 2: She is shut right through the hearty? Oh what doll?
[19:24] Speaker 2: We do notify the police and tell Richard.
[19:27] Speaker 5: Stranger what that's my bathing suit?
[19:30] Speaker 2: She's wearing yours?
[19:31] Speaker 5: Yes, don't you see? Somebody thought it.
[19:34] Speaker 2: Was me and.
[19:37] Speaker 3: Paula Crane and I am headed back to the mainland
[19:38] Speaker 3: in an ira asure. We notified the sheriff first, then
[19:42] Speaker 3: Richard Terrace. He insisted on going back out to the
[19:45] Speaker 3: island with us immediately.
[19:49] Speaker 5: Richard, I don't know what to say. And oh Anne, Richard, please,
[19:55] Speaker 5: Paul I asked her to.
[19:56] Speaker 2: Let me alone.
[19:57] Speaker 7: If it hadn't mean for you, Ann would probably still
[19:59] Speaker 7: be alive. Richn She was wearing your suit, wasn't she?
[20:02] Speaker 7: Whoever killed with you Richard dull And I wish it
[20:04] Speaker 7: had been you. You hated her ever since Anne and
[20:07] Speaker 7: I got married. I'll say it easy, Richard William. And
[20:09] Speaker 7: when the sheriff gets here, I'll have something to say
[20:10] Speaker 7: to him too. Now get away, both of you.
[20:13] Speaker 2: I want to be alone with Ann.
[20:15] Speaker 5: But Richard, how will you get there?
[20:16] Speaker 2: Let me alone? Paula Ranger.
[20:21] Speaker 5: You've got to find out who shot and killed poor Anne.
[20:25] Speaker 3: I intend to, and first I'm going to talk to
[20:29] Speaker 3: your mother. But before I had my talk with Missus Loomis,
[20:36] Speaker 3: there was something I had to do first. This was
[20:40] Speaker 3: my own room. The water picture was empty. There was
[20:44] Speaker 3: just enough moisture left for one taste. That taste had
[20:47] Speaker 3: enough dope inant to knock a Republican right out of
[20:49] Speaker 3: his party.
[20:52] Speaker 2: The other rooms were the same.
[20:53] Speaker 3: The pictures were empty, but contained enough moisture to give
[20:57] Speaker 3: me what I wanted. The last room was Missus Loomis's frommember,
[21:03] Speaker 3: the dar came the odor of smoke.
[21:05] Speaker 2: I wasted no more time, mister.
[21:08] Speaker 6: Cranger, don't care you come into my room without knocking.
[21:12] Speaker 2: Why are you doing at fire, Missus Lomis?
[21:14] Speaker 6: Nothing?
[21:15] Speaker 2: I think I better take a look at that, Missus Lonelis,
[21:18] Speaker 2: how dare you wow? What have we here? A red
[21:22] Speaker 2: bathing suit?
[21:23] Speaker 3: Mister missus Loomis, did you know that Anne was shot
[21:26] Speaker 3: and killed this morning?
[21:28] Speaker 5: Anne shot?
[21:29] Speaker 2: Yes?
[21:31] Speaker 3: Here you all set to toss a red bathing suit
[21:34] Speaker 3: into the fireplace was not much. One of people up
[21:39] Speaker 3: here always start up fireplaces during the hottest month of
[21:41] Speaker 3: the year.
[21:42] Speaker 6: This is my home and if I want a fire
[21:44] Speaker 6: I shot one.
[21:45] Speaker 2: To burn up bathing suits.
[21:47] Speaker 6: Get out of here, mister Grainger. You know that a
[21:49] Speaker 6: truth like.
[21:49] Speaker 3: This, Missus Loomis. And I'm very excited about Anne's murder.
[21:54] Speaker 3: You're more interested in this red bathing suit? Is it
[21:56] Speaker 3: because you shot.
[21:57] Speaker 2: And killed her?
[21:58] Speaker 6: Suppose I did?
[22:00] Speaker 2: Why would you?
[22:01] Speaker 6: Because she was.
[22:02] Speaker 7: Ruining my daughter's life, my real daughter, Paula, my remaining
[22:06] Speaker 7: married to Richard Terracey.
[22:07] Speaker 5: Yes, that's why I killed her.
[22:09] Speaker 3: And you were burning the bathing suit because you didn't
[22:11] Speaker 3: want anybody to know you'd been swimming early this morning.
[22:14] Speaker 5: Right, that's right. Mother, The sherif is down. What are
[22:18] Speaker 5: you doing with that bathing suit?
[22:20] Speaker 2: Paula? Whose suit? Is this?
[22:23] Speaker 5: Why it belonged to Anne? What's going on here?
[22:28] Speaker 3: Your mother has just confessed to Anne's murder. What she
[22:33] Speaker 3: was just going to burn this suit? That suit might
[22:36] Speaker 3: have proved that she swam to the island this morning.
[22:38] Speaker 5: Oh Granger, really look at the size of that suit.
[22:42] Speaker 5: Mother couldn't get into it if she lost forty pound.
[22:44] Speaker 3: I want to make a little check, Missus Loomis. Turn around, right,
[22:46] Speaker 3: turn around, let's see what are you doing? Just checking
[22:50] Speaker 3: the back of your head, Missus Lolis to see if
[22:52] Speaker 3: your hair is wet.
[22:54] Speaker 2: That's not so. You couldn't have swum over to the island.
[22:58] Speaker 5: Of course not, Paula.
[23:00] Speaker 2: I'd like to see if your hair is wet.
[23:02] Speaker 5: Keep away from me.
[23:03] Speaker 3: You tipped yourself when you mentioned that your mother couldn't
[23:06] Speaker 3: get into that suit but you could.
[23:09] Speaker 5: Wet hair doesn't prove a thing.
[23:10] Speaker 3: Other things do, though, Like the pictures that held the water,
[23:13] Speaker 3: one had been emptied, some had remains of dope, and
[23:16] Speaker 3: some didn't. Hands didn't for one yours for another.
[23:19] Speaker 5: Are you saying that eyeshot at Maybe.
[23:20] Speaker 3: I'd like to bet that you deliberately let and hear
[23:23] Speaker 3: your talk with Richard Terrace last night. You know she'd
[23:26] Speaker 3: be on an island if it killed her.
[23:27] Speaker 2: And a dip.
[23:28] Speaker 5: You're insane.
[23:29] Speaker 3: You probably stole a suit, forcing her to wear yours.
[23:32] Speaker 3: You swam after in the red suit. You killed her,
[23:34] Speaker 3: and your mother saw you do it. That's why she
[23:37] Speaker 3: wanted to take the blade to.
[23:38] Speaker 5: Protect your mister Granger.
[23:39] Speaker 6: Please don't say anymore.
[23:40] Speaker 3: I was a front man for you, Paula. When Anne died,
[23:42] Speaker 3: it looked like the bullet was intended for you. You
[23:45] Speaker 3: would probably try to pin it on Richard, and I
[23:48] Speaker 3: would make a beautiful alibi for you.
[23:50] Speaker 5: All right, I killed her.
[23:52] Speaker 2: Let's put that gun down.
[23:53] Speaker 3: That's another mistake you made. You should have dropped the
[23:55] Speaker 3: gun into the lake.
[23:57] Speaker 5: I think you and Eye Grange. You will leave by
[23:59] Speaker 5: the back way. You know too much for your own good.
[24:01] Speaker 5: He did mother get out of the way.
[24:09] Speaker 3: Well, friends, that's a story. I'll be back to wrap
[24:12] Speaker 3: up the case in just a minute. Paula Crane fired
[24:25] Speaker 3: just too late because I had her on and the
[24:27] Speaker 3: shot went over the ceiling. The sheriff rushed upstairs when
[24:30] Speaker 3: he heard the story, took it to the local jail.
[24:34] Speaker 3: Some weeks later, Richard Terris and I were in my
[24:36] Speaker 3: office waiting for something.
[24:37] Speaker 7: You should have told me that night that you were
[24:39] Speaker 7: a private detective.
[24:40] Speaker 2: Oh I couldn't. I was working for Paula.
[24:42] Speaker 3: I was a ralibi story of the shots poisoning the cats.
[24:46] Speaker 3: He set it up pretty nice.
[24:48] Speaker 7: The chemist to whom Karl Hendrick took the glass in
[24:50] Speaker 7: the insect pot of his testimony was damaging too.
[24:53] Speaker 2: This is it. I will know what happened.
[24:57] Speaker 3: Hello, I see thanks. Jerry found of guilty, life imprisonment.
[25:09] Speaker 3: That's not fair. She should have been executed. A rich
[25:13] Speaker 3: all A love freedom more than anything. Life imprisonment is
[25:17] Speaker 3: the worst sentence she could get. Again, you just heard
[25:27] Speaker 3: one of the most interesting cases in my files.
[25:30] Speaker 2: I have another one for him, so be around next time.
[25:42] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, a good episode, Loss of Suspects, Little Clothes,
[25:47] Speaker 1: summer ad Herrings, and a good reveal at the end.
[25:51] Speaker 1: I like the idea of Granger being really bothered by
[25:57] Speaker 1: the sounds of the countryside as someone who lives in
[26:00] Speaker 1: New York City. Now I've heard it stood out to
[26:04] Speaker 1: me people complaining about very, very large cities like New
[26:09] Speaker 1: York and Los Angeles and the constant noise there, But
[26:13] Speaker 1: it never occurred to me in the reverse that this
[26:16] Speaker 1: would be a bother to people who live in the city.
[26:20] Speaker 1: But it does make sense. I also appreciated the conclusion
[26:26] Speaker 1: and grangers realization that life in prison was actually the
[26:32] Speaker 1: punishment that Paula would hate most, and his ability to
[26:37] Speaker 1: see that does speak to who is as a character. Well,
[26:40] Speaker 1: now let's turn to some listener comments and feedback, and
[26:43] Speaker 1: we start out on Spotify with some comments regarding the
[26:50] Speaker 1: episode The Triangle affair, Dino flags something I miss Barrister. Oops, Yeah,
[26:58] Speaker 1: that would not be in appropriate term for New York
[27:03] Speaker 1: based audio drama. And I mean, they are trying to
[27:07] Speaker 1: make this as New York as possible, but there are
[27:11] Speaker 1: so many you know, there's these little slips that will
[27:14] Speaker 1: stand out, like even the way they say garage, well
[27:18] Speaker 1: they don't say garage, which I guess is part of
[27:21] Speaker 1: the problem that makes it sound so odd to American ears.
[27:26] Speaker 1: Harrison writes, this might be me imagining things, but Granger
[27:31] Speaker 1: seemed harsher in his reportee with everyone. I don't know
[27:35] Speaker 1: if that's a reference to that particular episode or overall.
[27:41] Speaker 1: I guess I have listened to some detectives that can
[27:45] Speaker 1: be really, really harsh. I mean, when I think about it,
[27:48] Speaker 1: the guys who can just be like totally in your
[27:54] Speaker 1: face rude, like most of the times characters like lou
[28:01] Speaker 1: Dana or Mockhammer or Larry Kent. Steve Granger is not
[28:08] Speaker 1: in that league. I do think Granger does have It's
[28:13] Speaker 1: not like the world's strictest code, but he does have
[28:16] Speaker 1: a very solid moral code and rules by that he
[28:23] Speaker 1: plays by and he does not like people who cross
[28:29] Speaker 1: that boundary, which we kind of saw on this episode
[28:33] Speaker 1: as even before he suspected Paula was a murderer. He
[28:38] Speaker 1: called her on the carpet about her immorality, So he
[28:44] Speaker 1: can really have a strong reaction to people that he
[28:49] Speaker 1: finds to be distasteful. But again, he is not anywhere
[28:54] Speaker 1: near the most severe, and having been exposed to the
[29:00] Speaker 1: more severe, was I just kind of I guess I'm unfazed, Hi,
[29:06] Speaker 1: Steve Granger. Then we have a comment from the Matte's
[29:12] Speaker 1: falcon over on the site called X be me listen
[29:15] Speaker 1: to Adam Graham's wrap up of this one. First, be
[29:18] Speaker 1: intrigued by the talk of patients versus salider and what
[29:22] Speaker 1: is the green lantern doing in this tied to a
[29:25] Speaker 1: convict victim? Roll it back and be delighted as the
[29:28] Speaker 1: pieces come together in this table. You found a new
[29:32] Speaker 1: way to listen. Anyone else who tries to let me
[29:35] Speaker 1: know how that works for you. And then we have
[29:38] Speaker 1: some comments on our listeners survey on Blueberry po Riots
[29:44] Speaker 1: love the Great Detective Shows. Tim Rit's been listening many
[29:50] Speaker 1: years since the beginning beginning Adam's amazing consistency is remarkable.
[29:55] Speaker 1: Maybe for a treat play looks Champagne for Caesar, Well,
[30:01] Speaker 1: I would not be close to the idea of doing that.
[30:06] Speaker 1: It is the type of thing where I would need
[30:11] Speaker 1: either some chief of detectives Patreon to request it or
[30:16] Speaker 1: for it to work out as something that would fit
[30:19] Speaker 1: in an amazing world of radio series. But I'll keep
[30:24] Speaker 1: that suggestion in mind. Thanks so much. Well, now it's
[30:27] Speaker 1: time to thank our Patreon supporter of the day. Thank
