[1:44] Speaker 2: Danger with Stranger.
[1:54] Speaker 3: Saw you getting out today?
[1:56] Speaker 2: Huski? Yeah?
[1:57] Speaker 3: I want to what to be like if I got out?
[1:59] Speaker 3: Maybe I go fishing. I could even flame myself a girl.
[2:02] Speaker 3: You don't skip. I haven't seen a girl in eleven years.
[2:04] Speaker 3: Dames can be trouble, but you've got a girl. I've
[2:06] Speaker 3: seen a picture in color, even right curly hair on
[2:09] Speaker 3: big brownd.
[2:10] Speaker 2: Got up. I have a smoke. Thanks.
[2:14] Speaker 3: You're playing this solitaire game against Skip.
[2:16] Speaker 2: I told you it's not solitaire, it's called patiently.
[2:19] Speaker 4: I know.
[2:20] Speaker 3: Gee, I can see you this afternoon.
[2:22] Speaker 2: Skip.
[2:22] Speaker 3: You'll be on broad where you're buying a new suit.
[2:24] Speaker 3: You're eating a swell meal in a swell restaurant.
[2:27] Speaker 2: You're even get married. Shut it out and making me sick.
[2:30] Speaker 3: But Gee, you're a free man.
[2:31] Speaker 2: Don't have me that. I'm a can remember. Every place
[2:34] Speaker 2: I go, they'll be saying, there's Skip land tree. You
[2:36] Speaker 2: just get out of the pen.
[2:38] Speaker 3: You sound like you didn't want to get out, Skip.
[2:40] Speaker 2: I want to get out. Don't worry, because I'm going
[2:42] Speaker 2: to get the guy who frame me into this joint. See.
[2:45] Speaker 3: I wouldn't talk that way if I was you. You'll
[2:47] Speaker 3: be back inside a month.
[2:49] Speaker 2: Not me. I'm going to be smart.
[2:51] Speaker 3: My first cell mate said that too, he went out
[2:53] Speaker 3: to get even. He died in this cell four years ago.
[2:57] Speaker 2: I'm not dying in any cell.
[2:59] Speaker 3: No, you'll be back Skipped unless you change your way.
[3:03] Speaker 5: You're thinking.
[3:07] Speaker 2: This is Steve Granger, private detective with a story about
[3:10] Speaker 2: a guy who came out of the penitentiary and walked
[3:12] Speaker 2: straight into trouble with me as his frontman. And just
[3:16] Speaker 2: a moment, I'll take you back to one of my
[3:17] Speaker 2: most interesting cases. This is Stranger. It'd been a pretty
[3:31] Speaker 2: dull morning where clients were concerned. I was getting tired
[3:34] Speaker 2: of the view from my office window when my phone
[3:36] Speaker 2: sang a very cute melody. It was Skip Landry, who
[3:40] Speaker 2: wanted to see me at his Midtown apartment as soon
[3:42] Speaker 2: as it was convenient. The price he mentioned for my
[3:45] Speaker 2: services made it convenient immediately. I mean, Hi, agree, Hello, Skip,
[3:55] Speaker 2: come over to that. Why do you want to see
[3:57] Speaker 2: me about Skip? I just get out of the pen
[4:01] Speaker 2: three years on a phony rap on. I want you
[4:04] Speaker 2: to get the people who cram me detail Skip a
[4:07] Speaker 2: lot of them. Yeah, wait till I finished this. What
[4:11] Speaker 2: are you doing by in a solitaire game called patience?
[4:14] Speaker 2: If you got me up here just to watch you
[4:16] Speaker 2: play card games, I'll scram Skip. You know why I
[4:19] Speaker 2: got you up here. I want to be cleared. If
[4:21] Speaker 2: I remember you were convicted of robbery, open and shutcase. Yeah,
[4:25] Speaker 2: they opened the cell door and shut me in for
[4:27] Speaker 2: three years. Understand, Granger, I'm not quarreling with the court.
[4:32] Speaker 2: The evidence was presented. Court had no other choice. That
[4:35] Speaker 2: was three years ago. We'll be easy. Can you give
[4:39] Speaker 2: me along the way of a lead? Nothing, I had
[4:41] Speaker 2: no alibi. What do you do now that you're up?
[4:46] Speaker 2: Lay low until you find out things. I've got money
[4:49] Speaker 2: in the bank. Now, how about it, I don't drop
[4:53] Speaker 2: down a center street. Maybe I can get a look
[4:55] Speaker 2: at the transcript of your trial by feeder on the level.
[4:58] Speaker 2: I'll go along with you, okay, by me, and that's
[5:02] Speaker 2: probably my lawyer come in well.
[5:06] Speaker 6: Well, Skip, Nice to see him out in the open again.
[5:09] Speaker 2: Thanks Kirk for everything you did. Don't mention it, my boy.
[5:13] Speaker 6: You're fortunately you didn't get a longer term because of
[5:15] Speaker 6: your gambling activities.
[5:16] Speaker 2: I know. Oh, this is my attorney, Kirk Masters, Steve Gringer,
[5:20] Speaker 2: the private eye. I didn't know you two were friends.
[5:23] Speaker 2: I know him before. He's working for me. You don't
[5:27] Speaker 2: need a detective, you need a job. I know what
[5:29] Speaker 2: I'm doing.
[5:30] Speaker 6: You get out of line one step and I'll lock
[5:32] Speaker 6: you up again. You're on parole, remember, Skip.
[5:42] Speaker 2: Lantree nodded me on my way with a tight look
[5:44] Speaker 2: around his eyes and mouth. I known him before his
[5:46] Speaker 2: brush with law, known him as a gambler, but an
[5:48] Speaker 2: honest one and a nice character. When I got the
[5:51] Speaker 2: police headquarters, Lieutenant hal Kramer looked at me in disgust. Grader,
[5:55] Speaker 2: sometimes I think you're playing nuts. I'm trying hard to
[5:58] Speaker 2: keep our personal feelings out of this howl. I'm working
[6:01] Speaker 2: for Skip Lantry. But I told you I know all
[6:03] Speaker 2: about his trial. The apartment had him dead to write,
[6:07] Speaker 2: I'm part of the loot in his apartment. I know that.
[6:09] Speaker 2: But out of the boys find out a phone tip anonymous?
[6:14] Speaker 2: Of course, naturally, all, Lieutenant, wouldn't that make it look
[6:17] Speaker 2: like a frame. We get lots of anonymous tips from
[6:19] Speaker 2: people who want to want to stay anonymous. I know, Look, Lieutenant,
[6:25] Speaker 2: how about helping me get a transcript of the trial.
[6:28] Speaker 2: It'll take you two hours to read it, for which
[6:31] Speaker 2: I'm grateful because it'll be interesting, because it'll keep you
[6:34] Speaker 2: out of my hair that long. Kramer got me a
[6:39] Speaker 2: transcript to Skip Lantry's trial, and this time I felt
[6:41] Speaker 2: like a man at a very dead dead end. The
[6:44] Speaker 2: testimony was all there, as iron clad as a matron's girdle.
[6:49] Speaker 2: Lantry had even been tentatively identified by the janitor of
[6:52] Speaker 2: the apartment building where the robbery had occurred. I jotted
[6:55] Speaker 2: down his name and went out there. What do you want.
[7:06] Speaker 2: My name is Granger. You're Alvin Fredy, the janitor. Three
[7:09] Speaker 2: years ago you testified a trial of Skip Lantry. What
[7:12] Speaker 2: about it? You testified that you saw him or somebody
[7:16] Speaker 2: who looked a lot like him coming to the building
[7:18] Speaker 2: here and go upstairs. Suppose he did. How positive are
[7:21] Speaker 2: you that the man you saw was actually Skip Lantry?
[7:24] Speaker 2: You expect me to remember something like that? That was
[7:26] Speaker 2: three years ago. I got a step farther with you.
[7:29] Speaker 2: If I brought Lantry out here, could you still identify him?
[7:32] Speaker 2: I don't know. Okay, Freddy, hang around, I'll bring him out.
[7:37] Speaker 2: We'll see how good your memory is. I'll continue with
[7:43] Speaker 2: this interesting story in a minute. There was something about
[7:54] Speaker 2: the face of that janitor, Alvin Fridy, that I didn't
[7:56] Speaker 2: like much, but that didn't actually prove he was lying.
[7:59] Speaker 2: I drug Star and call Lieutenant Kreamer. I asked him
[8:02] Speaker 2: to check on the janitor for me, and then I
[8:04] Speaker 2: grabbed some transportation and went back to Skip Lantry's apartment.
[8:07] Speaker 2: Why did you find out green Jet an't checked the
[8:09] Speaker 2: testimony if you tryal oh, and they had you dead
[8:13] Speaker 2: to rights. I know, say about janitor at the building.
[8:17] Speaker 2: He looked a little suspicious to me, meaning what if
[8:22] Speaker 2: somebody really tried to frame you and they could have
[8:24] Speaker 2: pulled the robbery and fed the janitor a few bucks
[8:26] Speaker 2: to say out of recognized you. It could be. I
[8:30] Speaker 2: think I'll get an investigator friend of mine to Tailum. Hey,
[8:33] Speaker 2: I've got somebody will help you. A little dame named
[8:35] Speaker 2: Phyllis Preston. Oh no, not a lady detective. Yeah, we
[8:39] Speaker 2: used to live in the same block when we were kids.
[8:42] Speaker 2: Look her up. She's in the book. I better get
[8:44] Speaker 2: out of here. Hang around a second. I know who
[8:46] Speaker 2: it is, darling.
[8:49] Speaker 3: I'm so happy to see you again.
[8:51] Speaker 2: Okay, baby, don't take it so good.
[8:53] Speaker 5: Tonight you and Kirk and I can go.
[8:56] Speaker 2: Who's he? Well? This is Steve grangef my girl, little
[9:00] Speaker 2: seal of the name Glad, I mean your mister name.
[9:02] Speaker 3: Hello, Oh Skip, I brought that stuff?
[9:06] Speaker 2: You mean the dog you can talk in front of Grange?
[9:09] Speaker 2: How much did you bring?
[9:10] Speaker 3: Almost all of it?
[9:11] Speaker 5: You had in the bank, two thousand?
[9:14] Speaker 2: Here here it is, thanks baby. I think I'll be
[9:18] Speaker 2: running along skip y cardion a little while going over
[9:20] Speaker 2: to see the Preston girl. Yep, get her number out
[9:23] Speaker 2: of the phone book. She must still be listed. Okay,
[9:26] Speaker 2: you'll be here if I call. I'm not going any place.
[9:29] Speaker 2: I'm the patient type. I found plus Preston's address, made
[9:37] Speaker 2: my way over to a rooming house on the west side.
[9:39] Speaker 2: I found a door, and the door along the passage opened.
[9:49] Speaker 2: She ain't even mister, you see her?
[9:50] Speaker 5: Go up?
[9:51] Speaker 7: Sure I've seen her after about half hour ago. Okay,
[9:54] Speaker 7: she couldn't wait for you. She was with another guy cackling. Yeah, sure, mister,
[10:01] Speaker 7: didn't me no harm, no issue. Went where I happened
[10:04] Speaker 7: to hear the guy mentioned the green lantern. Thanks, chum,
[10:06] Speaker 7: think I'll dropped down there.
[10:07] Speaker 2: I wouldn't go there if I as you, mister, not
[10:09] Speaker 2: in that nice new suit. I'm mind a nice new suit.
[10:12] Speaker 2: Get back in your room. Take a look at yourself
[10:13] Speaker 2: in the mirror. What for see? How much nice you
[10:16] Speaker 2: look with that mouth shut? The green lantern down the
[10:22] Speaker 2: street ten blocks was everything the name implied, a typical
[10:25] Speaker 2: honky tonk with the usual number offbeat characters waiting for
[10:28] Speaker 2: a chance to make a dishonest dollar. The honor was
[10:30] Speaker 2: another socially minded girl I knew named George Slater. And
[10:33] Speaker 2: I got inside. I looked around. There wasn't a girl
[10:36] Speaker 2: in sight. The bartender remembered one going into Georgie's office.
[10:41] Speaker 2: Mind if I come in that case, pardon me? Who
[10:44] Speaker 2: do you think you were? Where is Phyllis Preston Slater?
[10:47] Speaker 2: I don't know, crature, honest, I don't act like you're lying, mister.
[10:50] Speaker 2: Don't wear in there that room. Thanks, you can come
[10:58] Speaker 2: out now. I'm as Preston is jerk lucky.
[11:01] Speaker 3: In You don't think I was playing post office?
[11:03] Speaker 2: And there? Do you? What's all this? Slater? You got
[11:06] Speaker 2: the dame so blow. I don't have to talk. I
[11:08] Speaker 2: don't loan your heir, and I mean permanently. Pal, that's
[11:13] Speaker 2: for nothing. Try something and see what really happens. I'm
[11:29] Speaker 2: Steve Granger Phillis.
[11:30] Speaker 5: Oh, I've heard of you.
[11:32] Speaker 2: How come there?
[11:33] Speaker 3: Just a minute of time rescue at the Green Lantern.
[11:35] Speaker 2: Skip Lanter. He told me to contact you, said you
[11:38] Speaker 2: were a lady private eye.
[11:40] Speaker 3: I do a little investigating.
[11:43] Speaker 2: Why did George Slater lock you in that room? How
[11:46] Speaker 2: do you get you out of your apartment? Simple?
[11:49] Speaker 3: He was there when I got home, he had a gun.
[11:52] Speaker 3: He implied that it would be smart of me to
[11:54] Speaker 3: come along quietly. Why because well, listen, grange a wild question.
[12:00] Speaker 2: Lantry claims he was sent up on a false charge.
[12:04] Speaker 2: He wants to be cleared.
[12:06] Speaker 3: I think he was praying too, I'll come.
[12:09] Speaker 2: I'll have my reasons private one. Maybe well I get
[12:14] Speaker 2: a job for it. Yes, Watching that janitor Alvin Freedy, Oh.
[12:20] Speaker 3: The one who testified it skips trial.
[12:22] Speaker 2: That's the one that out just for last. It might
[12:26] Speaker 2: not be that funny. I told for this person to
[12:33] Speaker 2: be careful when she was checking the janitor for me.
[12:35] Speaker 2: I dropped her off at her place. Wondered if I
[12:38] Speaker 2: should have George Slater booked unattempt at kidnapping, but decided
[12:41] Speaker 2: to let him alone for the time being. I stopped
[12:43] Speaker 2: off a few minutes later at cal Hendrick's place. A
[12:46] Speaker 2: newspaper man seemed pleased to see me. Steve, my boy,
[12:49] Speaker 2: you are very popular around these parts. Wow, am I
[12:52] Speaker 2: You've had more telephone calls and a chorus girl turned
[12:54] Speaker 2: practical nurse skip Lantry for one? Who else? Lieutenant Kramer
[12:58] Speaker 2: of homicide. He applies the eight nine double four nine
[13:02] Speaker 2: Well that's no precinct station. The good lieutenant sounded like
[13:10] Speaker 2: someone had ruffled his feathers. Solely his odd for him.
[13:13] Speaker 2: I think his ancestors were all ostriches. Hello, Lieutenant, this
[13:24] Speaker 2: is Granger.
[13:25] Speaker 4: You can stop trying to prove Skip Lantry's innocence.
[13:28] Speaker 2: What are you talking about?
[13:29] Speaker 4: I'm up as apartment. Lantree's sitting at his desk. Also,
[13:33] Speaker 4: he's carrying a bullet in him.
[13:35] Speaker 2: Murder.
[13:36] Speaker 4: Huh, suicide.
[13:42] Speaker 2: This was something that didn't add up. Skip Lantry dead well,
[13:46] Speaker 2: it was tough, but suicide. That didn't figure that with
[13:50] Speaker 2: a guy who played a game he called patients of
[13:52] Speaker 2: his last words to me whether he was the patient type.
[13:57] Speaker 2: Just a minute, I'll bring you the climax of the case.
[14:09] Speaker 2: Lieutenant Craman's voice announcing the death of Skip Lantry was
[14:12] Speaker 2: cut off sharp as I slammed down the phone, constant
[14:14] Speaker 2: a bible on my shouldered the cal Hendrix, and made
[14:16] Speaker 2: for my client's apartment, my dead client. There you are, Granger.
[14:21] Speaker 2: The whole way out, just as we founded. Doesn't make sense, Cream,
[14:25] Speaker 2: I don't care what you say. He must have thought
[14:27] Speaker 2: you could never prove anything, so he shut himself. Where
[14:29] Speaker 2: was the gun on the floor next to his body
[14:31] Speaker 2: to go throw him. Naturally, he had two thousand dollars
[14:33] Speaker 2: in his pants. Pocket man might be dead, but it's
[14:37] Speaker 2: still my client. Leave everything untouched in this apartment for
[14:40] Speaker 2: a couple of days, Ranger. This is an out and
[14:42] Speaker 2: out case of suicide, says Opious, as that forty cent
[14:45] Speaker 2: necktie you're wearing, which is better than the two bit
[14:48] Speaker 2: shoe string you've got holding up your Adam's apple. When
[14:56] Speaker 2: the police photographer and the print men that finished their
[14:58] Speaker 2: respective chaws, I was left alone and skip Lantry's apartment.
[15:01] Speaker 2: I moved around, examined the dresser, the closet, et cetera.
[15:05] Speaker 2: He was as neat as a pin. One second, Well.
[15:12] Speaker 6: Mister Masters, I was on my way back here I
[15:14] Speaker 6: met that police lieutenant. Is it true, Granger?
[15:17] Speaker 2: I'm afraid so that's terrible. Yep. Did you discover anything
[15:22] Speaker 2: it might have helped skip Poob's innocence? No, no, not exactly,
[15:25] Speaker 2: and I didn't think you would.
[15:26] Speaker 6: I tried my best at the trial. I couldn't get
[15:28] Speaker 6: him off. You know his girlfriend, Lucille Donaine, of course, No.
[15:31] Speaker 6: Where she lives, yes, at the towers on the East side.
[15:34] Speaker 2: Seeing it today. I chatted with Lucille on the phone.
[15:37] Speaker 2: She said she was coming over to see Skip. She did.
[15:41] Speaker 2: By the way, did you handle all of Skip's legal
[15:43] Speaker 2: transactions for five years? Yeah? So much money? Did they
[15:46] Speaker 2: have a couple of thousand? He spent nothing during his
[15:48] Speaker 2: stay up state? Okay, mister Masters, I think I lock
[15:51] Speaker 2: up this place. Could I see you to the door?
[15:54] Speaker 2: Just why did you remain after the police left, mister Granger?
[15:57] Speaker 2: While I have a theory, you don't think Skip was murdered.
[16:03] Speaker 2: It's entirely possible. Kirk Masters with a typical barrister and
[16:12] Speaker 2: atle aged with a convex front instead of a concave one,
[16:15] Speaker 2: bright blue eyes in a pleasant manner. I said good
[16:19] Speaker 2: evening to him, hung around five minutes and beat it
[16:22] Speaker 2: over to see Luciale. The name, Oh, mister Granger, come in.
[16:31] Speaker 2: You've heard about Skip?
[16:34] Speaker 5: Isn't it terrible? He must have done it just after
[16:37] Speaker 5: I left?
[16:39] Speaker 2: How long did you stay at his place?
[16:41] Speaker 5: Just a few minutes.
[16:42] Speaker 3: I came home to get changed.
[16:43] Speaker 5: But tonight, Kirk Masters and I were giving a big
[16:47] Speaker 5: dinner party.
[16:49] Speaker 2: Too bad, poor Skip.
[16:52] Speaker 3: The time he spent in prison must have unbalanced his mind.
[16:55] Speaker 2: What makes you say that.
[16:57] Speaker 5: I watched him this afternoon in his apartment, still playing
[17:00] Speaker 5: that solitaire game over and over and all the time
[17:04] Speaker 5: he had that cold look in his eyes.
[17:08] Speaker 2: That money you brought him was that from his own account?
[17:12] Speaker 5: Oh? Yes, you see, Skip gave me a power of
[17:15] Speaker 5: attorney while he was away.
[17:18] Speaker 2: They see. But why are you asking all these questions.
[17:22] Speaker 2: I'm a funny person, mister name. I don't like to
[17:25] Speaker 2: take on clients and then have them commit suicide on me.
[17:28] Speaker 2: Mister Green, it hurts my reputation. I apologize for intruding
[17:35] Speaker 2: and left Lucille d Nane's apartment. There was a payphone
[17:38] Speaker 2: in the lobby of her place. I let a nickel
[17:40] Speaker 2: down its throat and dial Phyllis prest him. Hello, this
[17:44] Speaker 2: is Granger.
[17:45] Speaker 4: Oh you caught me just in time. I was leaving
[17:47] Speaker 4: to keep an eye on the janitor.
[17:48] Speaker 2: We're in trouble. Phyllis Lantry was found dead in his
[17:50] Speaker 2: apartment a little while ago. The police say it's suicide.
[17:56] Speaker 2: Oh no, no, she'd never do that. I don't believe
[18:00] Speaker 2: that makes two of us alisten. I'm gonna give you
[18:03] Speaker 2: a little help watching that janitor's trouble. I don't know.
[18:07] Speaker 2: Meet me at Cal Hendrick's place. He's a newsman. I
[18:11] Speaker 2: want him with you. Elice Preston was right on time.
[18:18] Speaker 2: I introduced her to Cal, and I could see the
[18:21] Speaker 2: look in the news hand's eye, which meant that the
[18:23] Speaker 2: story wasn't the only thing he was interested in, so
[18:26] Speaker 2: naturally he was only too happy to cooperate. Five minutes later,
[18:34] Speaker 2: I walked in the office of Lieutenant Kramer. I suppose
[18:37] Speaker 2: you want to know about Predy the janitor. Precisely, old pal,
[18:41] Speaker 2: He's been a janitor for seven years. He lives alone
[18:45] Speaker 2: in that basement apartment under the building. Police Reagan. No,
[18:48] Speaker 2: he's as clean as a dog's favorite bone. Oh it's that. Also,
[18:53] Speaker 2: the coroner will direct a verdict of suicide when Skip
[18:57] Speaker 2: Lantry's inquest comes up in the morning. I thanked the
[19:04] Speaker 2: Lieutenant and went back to my office. I sat there
[19:06] Speaker 2: trying to dream up a new leave. My brain cells
[19:09] Speaker 2: just laid there.
[19:12] Speaker 4: Yep, well, Granger, this is Philip Preston. I'm calling from
[19:16] Speaker 4: a store across the streets from George Slaty's Green Lanterns.
[19:19] Speaker 2: What are you doing down there? I told you and
[19:21] Speaker 2: Cal to keep an eye on that janitor. That's just
[19:23] Speaker 2: did he came down here? Did he?
[19:25] Speaker 5: He came out again a bit later.
[19:26] Speaker 2: I'm not long after that.
[19:28] Speaker 3: Lu steals and then went in with Kirk.
[19:29] Speaker 5: Masters, that lawyer.
[19:31] Speaker 2: Regular gathering of the clowns. Huh, what do we do?
[19:33] Speaker 2: Stay there? I should be down inside a half hour.
[19:39] Speaker 2: I slept on my coat and hat, had a cab
[19:41] Speaker 2: and pulled up in front of the apartment house where
[19:43] Speaker 2: the janitor held sway. Fortunately he was the only basement tenant.
[19:53] Speaker 2: I got some light on the subject and went through
[19:55] Speaker 2: his place. When I came up with the records, I
[19:58] Speaker 2: was amused at the fact that I could tell Lieutenant
[20:00] Speaker 2: Kramer that the janitor was a bookmaker. I left and
[20:09] Speaker 2: went over to another apartment, this one on the third floor.
[20:14] Speaker 2: The door was locked with a thin sheet of plastic.
[20:17] Speaker 2: Handled the right way let me in. I flicked on
[20:21] Speaker 2: the lights and went on the prowl. I know that
[20:24] Speaker 2: Lucille du Name must have Skip Lantry's bank books around
[20:28] Speaker 2: some place, and I set a draw of Lucille de
[20:32] Speaker 2: Name's desk. I found Skip Lantry's deposit book, which handed
[20:36] Speaker 2: me a surprise. Then I found another record, big as
[20:39] Speaker 2: life and twice as potent as an h bomb. What
[20:43] Speaker 2: I saw sent me to the phone, stabbing the private
[20:45] Speaker 2: number of Lieutenant Kramer.
[20:48] Speaker 4: Littleton of Kramer speaking.
[20:49] Speaker 2: This is Granger. Can you get in the Hall of
[20:51] Speaker 2: records for this time of night? If it's an emergency,
[20:54] Speaker 2: don't tell me your pot that skip Landry. Can you
[20:56] Speaker 2: get in sure? I'm playing a long hunched Kramer. Check
[21:00] Speaker 2: up on the ownership of a joint called the Green
[21:02] Speaker 2: Lantern and meet me there right away over here, Kramer, Well,
[21:16] Speaker 2: what kind of fairy tale is this?
[21:17] Speaker 4: Granger?
[21:19] Speaker 2: I checked up for you? Krk Masters owns a piece
[21:22] Speaker 2: of the Green Lantern with George Slater. That's what I've thought.
[21:26] Speaker 2: Now listen, the Green Lantern must be a book making headquarters.
[21:29] Speaker 2: Player's got a record, you know, he was a fund
[21:32] Speaker 2: said one time. All we need let's go inside. His
[21:44] Speaker 2: office is over there.
[21:49] Speaker 4: Now what just go on and bluff your way.
[21:52] Speaker 2: You haven't got a shred of evidence, you know. We
[21:54] Speaker 2: are listen for a second. Maybe we can hear somebody George,
[22:00] Speaker 2: that Preston girl. But you saw her what he plays
[22:02] Speaker 2: from across the seat? He follow him here, He doesn't
[22:05] Speaker 2: think so. But we can't take any chances okay, and
[22:08] Speaker 2: you have to get with a brain care too.
[22:10] Speaker 6: You must have told for the girl you can skip
[22:12] Speaker 6: the apartment there they're snooping around all.
[22:14] Speaker 2: Right, I'll take care of both of them. Don't worry you.
[22:17] Speaker 2: Make sure you didn't leave a clue at the apartment.
[22:20] Speaker 2: I woke drugs. Nobody hears the shot here that lieutenant,
[22:24] Speaker 2: we still go.
[22:24] Speaker 6: Back to your place and burn those records tomorrow or
[22:27] Speaker 6: ten close keeps the count of the banker.
[22:29] Speaker 2: He case grains to get away from George and snooze.
[22:32] Speaker 2: So don't worry about Grace. You didn't need any more, Kramer.
[22:34] Speaker 2: Let's make these charming people in person lessons. Didn't I
[22:40] Speaker 2: put him up? George, get out of here, or we
[22:41] Speaker 2: call a police in a minute. That's a name. How
[22:44] Speaker 2: much money did Skip Lantry have in his account?
[22:47] Speaker 5: Just a few dollars.
[22:48] Speaker 2: Take a look at this bank book I got out
[22:49] Speaker 2: of your apartment made out to Skip balance thousands of dollars.
[22:55] Speaker 2: Here are the records of a bookiey headquarters with your name,
[22:58] Speaker 2: Kirk Masters and George Slater. I will here greenery. From
[23:01] Speaker 2: where I stand, it looks like you were using Skip's
[23:03] Speaker 2: account to hide the profits of a book making. Was
[23:07] Speaker 2: it on account of Uncle Sam and the income tax? Boys?
[23:11] Speaker 2: Were you afraid that Skip would insist on seeing his
[23:13] Speaker 2: bank book? George, don't try it, George Masters, you're in
[23:18] Speaker 2: a suspicion of the murder of Skip Lantery. Who bad
[23:20] Speaker 2: your pall? George is such a blabber mouth. We heard them.
[23:23] Speaker 2: You are not arresting me. You sink out. Thanks Stranger
[23:29] Speaker 2: Quest shooting, you'll kill him. I'm going to the police.
[23:31] Speaker 2: You won't have to the police. I hear this is
[23:33] Speaker 2: Kramer of homicide. But then I take this parrot on
[23:35] Speaker 2: a headquarters. The paraffin test ought approved. Masters fired a
[23:39] Speaker 2: gun today, So I'm stetcher Athlet go all right? Master,
[23:48] Speaker 2: All right, Ranger, you hit a lady on the conjurary Lieutenant,
[23:55] Speaker 2: I defended myself against a wildcat. Well, friends, that's the story.
[24:03] Speaker 2: I'll be back to wrap up the case in just
[24:04] Speaker 2: a minute. Kramer had the local precinct men come to
[24:15] Speaker 2: the Green Lantern and take the trio to jail. They
[24:19] Speaker 2: also rounded up the janitor, who was more than willing
[24:21] Speaker 2: to tell her his part in the booky record. Kramer
[24:25] Speaker 2: was elated, but I was still puzzled about Skip Lantry.
[24:30] Speaker 2: Why had he been framed in the first place? Very simple, Granger.
[24:35] Speaker 2: Skip Lantry was in love with Lucille Daname. She was
[24:39] Speaker 2: in love with Kirk Masters. Uh the faint glimmer of
[24:43] Speaker 2: lighters coming through the fog. Now Skip had marriage in mine.
[24:47] Speaker 2: So Masters and the dname girl framed him to get
[24:50] Speaker 2: him out of the wave. And she got the bright
[24:52] Speaker 2: notion to get a power of attorney over his bank
[24:54] Speaker 2: account to hide illegitimate dole take the head of the class.
[25:00] Speaker 2: What about the janitor he gets up? No, no, he's
[25:04] Speaker 2: up for perjury. Say where's that Preston girl? I I
[25:08] Speaker 2: rather like her. Cala Hendrix rather likes the tube he's
[25:13] Speaker 2: got to ride for dinner, ending in a line that
[25:15] Speaker 2: reaches from here to Albany. Well, how do you know
[25:18] Speaker 2: I invited a two? She turned me down flat? Whoa,
[25:23] Speaker 2: So Granger the great gets the gold by huh listen, pal,
[25:27] Speaker 2: one more crack out of you and they'll be locking
[25:29] Speaker 2: me up for assaulting a police officer. Steve Granger, again,
[25:37] Speaker 2: you've just heard one of the most interesting cases in
[25:39] Speaker 2: my files. I'll have another one for you, so be
[25:44] Speaker 2: around next time.
[25:52] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, actually, a really intriguing case, and the
[25:57] Speaker 1: solution is quite reasonable one way, because it is actually
[26:02] Speaker 1: quite common for convicts to be the victims of financial fraud,
[26:08] Speaker 1: and certainly someone who a convict trust is in a
[26:13] Speaker 1: good position to take advantage of them. Now, today, the
[26:17] Speaker 1: more common ways that convicts get taken advantage of is
[26:21] Speaker 1: through having assets stolen and for their identities being used
[26:27] Speaker 1: for identity theft. But in this case they had an
[26:31] Speaker 1: entire money laundering scheme working out of his bank account.
[26:37] Speaker 1: Now I did get a little bit of a sense
[26:39] Speaker 1: of deja vu from the Wayward Diamond matter, as our
[26:44] Speaker 1: detective comes in on the criminals laying out their complicity
[26:51] Speaker 1: and guilt in really strong details. But I give credit
[26:56] Speaker 1: to Granger that it did not go on as long
[26:59] Speaker 1: as it is on Johnny Dollar. Now, the big distinction
[27:04] Speaker 1: that Skip makes between patience and solitaire is a bit baffling,
[27:12] Speaker 1: maybe reflecting more of a philosophical preference than anything else.
[27:17] Speaker 1: At the root, patience and solitaire are essentially the same thing,
[27:23] Speaker 1: with patients being the older term for a group of
[27:28] Speaker 1: games that you play by yourself arranging cards. Now, what
[27:33] Speaker 1: we tend to think of as solitaire, Like I played
[27:36] Speaker 1: solitaire on my computer is Klondox Solitaire, although there are
[27:42] Speaker 1: many other games, so Skip's use of patients doesn't actually
[27:46] Speaker 1: tell us what he was playing. The big argument for
[27:50] Speaker 1: calling the games like that patience is that solitaire can
[27:55] Speaker 1: refer to other types of games that you play by yourself.
[28:00] Speaker 1: For all we know, Skip could have been playing Klondike
[28:04] Speaker 1: Solitaire but just really insisting on calling it patients. Also
[28:09] Speaker 1: kind of surprised that Alan Scott's name wasn't on the
[28:13] Speaker 1: deed of the Green Lantern. Now. I know some of
[28:16] Speaker 1: you might be thinking, how Jordan, but that version of
[28:20] Speaker 1: the Green Lantern wasn't created until nineteen fifty nine. But
[28:26] Speaker 1: the Green Lantern had been a character before Hal Jordan,
[28:30] Speaker 1: the Golden Age version Alan Scott, who was also at
[28:34] Speaker 1: one time a member of the Justice Society of America.
[28:38] Speaker 1: But whatever the case, the character did not make an
[28:42] Speaker 1: impact that was so big that an Australian radio show
[28:47] Speaker 1: wouldn't think of naming a watering hole after the Green Lantern.
[28:53] Speaker 1: Now it's time to think our Patreon supporter of the day,
[28:58] Speaker 1: and I want to go ahead, think Chris, Patreon supporter
