[0:45] Speaker 1: That's a Kona.
[0:54] Speaker 2: P-E-P-S-I. That's your smartest Kona buy. Pepsi-Cola presents Counterspy.
[1:12] Speaker 3: Washington calling David Harding Counterspy.
[1:16] Speaker 2: Washington calling David Harding Counterspy.
[1:20] Speaker 3: Harding Counterspy calling Washington.
[1:23] Speaker 4: United States Counterspy. is specially appointed to investigate and combat
[1:34] Speaker 4: the enemies of our country, both at home and abroad.
[1:43] Speaker 2: Tonight, more in the case of the postal pirates. Another
[1:47] Speaker 2: counter-spy report to the American people. Brought to you each
[1:50] Speaker 2: Tuesday and Thursday by Pepsi-Cola.
[1:53] Speaker 3: Pepsi-Cola hits the spot. Two full glasses, that's a lot.
[1:57] Speaker 3: That's right, you heard what they said.
[1:58] Speaker 2: Two full glasses of sparkling Pepsi from one big 12-ounce bottle.
[2:03] Speaker 2: You're getting an extra glass full. And what a delicious
[2:06] Speaker 2: glass full. The most refreshing, delightful cola that ever tickled
[2:10] Speaker 2: your taste. You can't top Pepsi's tangy flavor, and that big,
[2:14] Speaker 2: big bottle saves you money, goes twice as far. Pepsi's
[2:18] Speaker 2: America's big, big favorite, and America's biggest cola value. So
[2:23] Speaker 2: why take less when Pepsi's best? Whenever you reach for refreshments, remember...
[2:29] Speaker 2: Why take less when Pepsi's best?
[2:32] Speaker 3: And now, to Counterspy.
[2:40] Speaker 2: For weeks, David Harding has been on the trail of
[2:43] Speaker 2: a million-dollar syndicate of thieves stealing packages from post offices
[2:47] Speaker 2: in a number of eastern cities. Harry Peters, assistant to Mr. Harding,
[2:52] Speaker 2: went undercover as a dishonest postal clerk named Harry Gordon
[2:56] Speaker 2: and has made contact with one of the big shots
[2:59] Speaker 2: of this racket, Frank Garrett. The two men are now
[3:02] Speaker 2: driving in Garrett's car with Peters, alias Harry Gordon, at
[3:06] Speaker 2: the wheels.
[3:14] Speaker 3: Okay, Harry, stay on the West Side Highway now. It's
[3:17] Speaker 3: a well car. Handle's nice. Yeah, I know. I like
[3:19] Speaker 3: to drive. Except in city traffic. That why you wanted
[3:23] Speaker 3: me to take the wheel?
[3:24] Speaker 5: One reason.
[3:26] Speaker 3: And the other?
[3:26] Speaker 5: You're a bright boy, Harry.
[3:30] Speaker 3: Thanks. You're the kind of a guy we'd like to
[3:33] Speaker 3: have if we were taking on new guys. You're not?
[3:37] Speaker 3: We don't like volunteers. We like to pick out our
[3:40] Speaker 3: own boys and hold them, too.
[3:42] Speaker 5: It's good and tight.
[3:43] Speaker 3: I stick like glue with this, though. Glue melts. We
[3:47] Speaker 3: prefer something more solid. Now, you might be a right guy.
[3:52] Speaker 5: Thanks.
[3:53] Speaker 3: Or a stoolie. I can't sing a note. Maybe even
[3:57] Speaker 3: a cop. I haven't got flat feet. Maybe, but we
[4:00] Speaker 3: never take chances. Hey, slow down, will you? You're going
[4:04] Speaker 3: too fast. I like speed. Now, don't get cute and
[4:07] Speaker 3: try to get a cop on our tail. A lot
[4:09] Speaker 3: of power in this motor. Slow down or I'll blast
[4:11] Speaker 3: your head off. I thought you'd show a rod tuner
[4:14] Speaker 3: a little later. Okay, I showed it. Now, slow down.
[4:16] Speaker 2: What for?
[4:17] Speaker 3: Right now, this is the safest way I can drive.
[4:19] Speaker 3: You crazy fool, look out! Close, huh? You don't slow down, I'll... Shoot?
[4:28] Speaker 3: Then what happens to us both? The needle's pushing 70. 80.
[4:40] Speaker 3: You'll kill us both. That's better than you killing me.
[4:46] Speaker 3: Look at the needle. 85.
[4:48] Speaker 5: It's a car. Okay, you win. You win. Only slow down.
[4:55] Speaker 3: Toss the gun on the floorboard.
[4:58] Speaker 5: Okay, okay.
[4:59] Speaker 3: Now blow it, blow it. Turn on all your pockets
[5:03] Speaker 3: and open the jacket wide. I don't want you to
[5:05] Speaker 3: cross me.
[5:06] Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, sure.
[5:06] Speaker 3: I ain't got another gap. Hey, a police siren a
[5:15] Speaker 3: block behind. Cops, now we are in the snow. Maybe.
[5:19] Speaker 5: That's the good boy. No more guns. Okay, bright boy,
[5:26] Speaker 5: we stopped.
[5:27] Speaker 6: But what are you going to do about those cops coming?
[5:33] Speaker 3: You'll see, tough guy.
[5:34] Speaker 5: Get out.
[5:43] Speaker 3: What is this? Only one plainclothes guy in that patrol car. Peters,
[5:47] Speaker 3: I've been tailing you ever since you got into this car.
[5:50] Speaker 3: What a race you stayed. He pulled a gun on me, Chief.
[5:52] Speaker 3: The only way I could make him drop it was
[5:53] Speaker 3: to speed up. Chief, who are you guys? Counterspies. Sorry
[5:57] Speaker 3: it turned out this way, Mr. Harding. It practically tips
[5:59] Speaker 3: our hand. Well, I'd rather have our hand tipped than
[6:01] Speaker 3: you did. But come on, we're in a hurry. What
[6:02] Speaker 3: about Garrett here? We'll turn him over to one of
[6:04] Speaker 3: the other cars. Let's get going. There's the signal, Dave.
[6:18] Speaker 3: You can go ahead. This is David Harding, calling from
[6:21] Speaker 3: New York. Attention counter-spy agents, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, and Philadelphia.
[6:27] Speaker 3: Circumstances force us to move in immediately on postal theft investigation.
[6:31] Speaker 3: Carry out all raids according to plan. Pick up all
[6:34] Speaker 3: members of the ring you can lay your hands on.
[6:37] Speaker 3: We will conduct raid on main warehouse of the gang
[6:39] Speaker 3: here in New York. Act on this order immediately. All
[6:54] Speaker 3: our agents staked out around the warehouse, Peter? Yes, David.
[6:56] Speaker 3: We're in luck. Oh, wow. Conway tells me that Jimmy Morrison,
[6:59] Speaker 3: the crooked postal clerk I've been keeping tabs on, went
[7:01] Speaker 3: into the warehouse just a while ago. Good. Maybe a
[7:04] Speaker 3: meeting of the brains of... What was that? Shots from
[7:08] Speaker 3: inside the warehouse. Let's go. You men cover the main
[7:18] Speaker 3: floor of the warehouse. Peters and I'll take the office upstairs. Peter,
[7:31] Speaker 3: look at that. Holy. Jimmy Morrison and that girl. Maybe
[7:36] Speaker 3: they're still alive. No. She's not. Jimmy Morrison's gone, too.
[7:45] Speaker 3: Here's a note.
[7:46] Speaker 6: Note.
[7:48] Speaker 3: Signed by Jimmy Morrison. Listen, Kathy was no good. She
[7:52] Speaker 3: was poison and poisoned me. She ran this whole package-stealing
[7:56] Speaker 3: racket and tricked me into it. There's no chance of
[7:59] Speaker 3: getting away. I don't want to, and I won't let her,
[8:02] Speaker 3: so I'm going to help her escape the only way
[8:04] Speaker 3: she can, by taking her with me. Give me a mask.
[8:09] Speaker 3: Looks as if this girl Kathy was the big shot, Dave.
[8:14] Speaker 3: Murder and suicide. Winds up the case nice and neat.
[8:19] Speaker 3: Looks like it, Peter, isn't it? Wait a minute. The
[8:24] Speaker 3: boys holding the gun. Well, he was a suicide, according
[8:27] Speaker 3: to the note. This was no suicide, Peters. It was murder.
[8:32] Speaker 3: Double murder. The killer may still be in the building. What?
[8:35] Speaker 3: Alert the squad. Have them go through this warehouse from
[8:37] Speaker 3: top to bottom, fast. And that thug who tried to
[8:40] Speaker 3: take you for a ride, Frank Garrett, get him up here.
[8:42] Speaker 3: I want to talk to him now. Come on, Garrett.
[8:52] Speaker 3: You can climb stairs faster than that. Okay, copper, don't shove.
[8:56] Speaker 3: Keep moving. Yeah, sure. All right, Pierce. I'll take care
[9:01] Speaker 3: of Garrett. You take charge of the rest of the squad.
[9:03] Speaker 3: Report to me on what you find. Right, Ted. What's
[9:08] Speaker 3: this all about, Mr. Harding? You wouldn't know?
[9:11] Speaker 1: No.
[9:12] Speaker 3: Okay, let's go into this office. Maybe we can find
[9:15] Speaker 3: the answer in there. Start moving, Garrett. Holy smoke. It's
[9:26] Speaker 3: a pretty picture, isn't it? You know them, Garrett? The
[9:29] Speaker 3: young man and the girl? Yeah. I mean, I... Yeah
[9:32] Speaker 3: is a good enough answer. Maybe you'd like to read
[9:35] Speaker 3: this note. Note? Go on. Help yourself. We found it
[9:40] Speaker 3: in this room. Found something else, too. This kid killed her?
[9:47] Speaker 3: Who'd have thought a punk like that could kill? Maybe
[9:51] Speaker 3: the person who took this photograph... Photograph. I found it
[9:54] Speaker 3: lying right here on the desk. A photograph of Jimmy
[9:56] Speaker 3: Morrison murdering a man. Take a look at it. Yeah,
[10:02] Speaker 3: I know. Who's the other man in the photograph? I
[10:07] Speaker 3: don't know. Come on, Garrett, make it easy on yourself.
[10:09] Speaker 3: This photo was a wonderful club to hold over young
[10:11] Speaker 3: Morrison's head. That's probably how you forced him into this
[10:13] Speaker 3: parcel post racket. Wasn't it? I don't know what you're
[10:16] Speaker 3: talking about. Come on, Garrett. Who's the dead man in
[10:19] Speaker 3: the picture? I told you, I don't know. Don't make
[10:21] Speaker 3: me laugh. Mr.
[10:21] Speaker 6: Harding, you read the note. Like it says, that dame
[10:26] Speaker 6: Kathy was a big boss in this racket. Okay, she's dead.
[10:29] Speaker 6: He killed himself. That winds it up. What more do
[10:32] Speaker 6: you want?
[10:32] Speaker 3: I want the person who killed the girl and Morris.
[10:34] Speaker 3: The note is... The note was planted to mislead us.
[10:38] Speaker 3: Look at Morris. He's holding the gun in his hand. Well, sure,
[10:41] Speaker 3: he shot himself. If he did, there'd be powder burns
[10:43] Speaker 3: around the wound in his head. But it's a clean wound.
[10:46] Speaker 3: That means he was shot from a slight distance by
[10:48] Speaker 3: someone else. Look, I got nothing to do with it.
[10:50] Speaker 3: You had your mitts on me when those shots were fired. Right.
[10:53] Speaker 3: But you know who that someone else was. I don't
[10:55] Speaker 3: know nothing. I ain't saying nothing. You're bright. Figure things
[11:00] Speaker 3: out for yourself. Okay, maybe I will. No good, then.
[11:05] Speaker 3: The boy's been through the whole warehouse. Whoever the murderer was,
[11:08] Speaker 3: he got away through an abandoned sewer outlet we found
[11:10] Speaker 3: in the cellar. I expected that, Peters. What about Frank here?
[11:14] Speaker 3: He doesn't want to talk at the moment. Maybe we
[11:16] Speaker 3: can change his mind. Maybe. In the meantime, get our
[11:19] Speaker 3: fingerprint and photographic details. Go over to this office, Peters.
[11:22] Speaker 3: We're not closing this case till we've caught a double murderer. Dave,
[11:35] Speaker 3: the report on that picture of Jimmy Morris was shooting.
[11:37] Speaker 3: A man just came in from Washington. Any result, Curtis? Yes.
[11:41] Speaker 3: The man on the floor is Nick Bodie. Alias this, that,
[11:44] Speaker 3: and the other. Here's the Rogues Gallery wire photo they sent. Well,
[11:49] Speaker 3: that matches this picture we found in the warehouse, all right.
[11:51] Speaker 3: And according to that picture, Bodie's dead. Unless you figured
[11:55] Speaker 3: a photograph for a frame-up. That's just what I do.
[11:58] Speaker 3: There had to be a photographer. Everything all set up.
[12:02] Speaker 3: The way I reconstruct it, she and Bodie framed the situation,
[12:05] Speaker 3: a fight, so that Morrison could be tricked into this picture. Well,
[12:08] Speaker 3: it's a convincer. Look at it. Morrison holding a gun.
[12:13] Speaker 3: Bodie falling to the floor. Bodie might really be dead.
[12:19] Speaker 3: That's possible, but this picture was too easy for us
[12:21] Speaker 3: to find, too convenient. Right in the top drawer of
[12:23] Speaker 3: the desk. You think he wanted us to look for
[12:25] Speaker 3: a dead body instead of a live one?
[12:26] Speaker 1: Yes.
[12:28] Speaker 3: And far from being a murder victim, he's a double murderer.
[12:31] Speaker 3: Send for Frank Garrett. We'll have another crack at questioning
[12:33] Speaker 3: him about Nick. If he still won't talk, maybe we
[12:36] Speaker 3: can use him as bait for our two-time killer. Cloud Empires, Incorporated.
[12:51] Speaker 3: Good morning. Mr. Richardson, I'm sorry. He's busy. Will you
[12:54] Speaker 3: call back later, please?
[13:00] Speaker 5: Can I help you, sir?
[13:02] Speaker 3: I want to see Mr. Richardson. Who shall I say
[13:05] Speaker 3: is calling? Just Nick, postal sales. Oh, I'm sorry. Mr.
[13:09] Speaker 3: Richardson will see salesmen on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Beautiful.
[13:14] Speaker 3: You give him my name, and if he says that too,
[13:17] Speaker 3: I'll go away. All right. Just a minute. Mr. Richardson,
[13:25] Speaker 3: Nick of postal sales to see you.
[13:29] Speaker 4: Oh, yes, sir.
[13:32] Speaker 3: Go right in, sir. That door. Thanks, beautiful. Hello, Nick.
[13:41] Speaker 3: Come in, come in. Surprised to see me, Richie? What
[13:46] Speaker 3: are you doing here, you fool?
[13:48] Speaker 6: Now, is there any way to greet a partner, Richie?
[13:51] Speaker 6: Every time the phone rings, I've been expecting counter-spies. Now
[13:53] Speaker 6: you're crazy enough to walk in.
[13:55] Speaker 3: I knew you'd be worried, Richie. I wanted to ease
[13:57] Speaker 3: your mind. Or leave the counter-spies to me. Now, why
[14:01] Speaker 3: would I do that? Where else would I find such
[14:04] Speaker 3: a good partner for selling my goods? Selling? You're not
[14:08] Speaker 3: thinking of keeping up this racket.
[14:10] Speaker 5: Why not?
[14:10] Speaker 6: There's still more millions in it. Not with me, Nick.
[14:13] Speaker 6: You can find somebody else. But not with a setup
[14:16] Speaker 6: like yours.
[14:18] Speaker 3: You buy merchandise for about 2,000 stores throughout the country.
[14:22] Speaker 3: We spread the stolen goods that thin, there's not a
[14:24] Speaker 3: chance of tracing it. Nick, you read the papers. Counter-spies
[14:28] Speaker 3: figure they've broken up the parcel post rings. Even tabbed
[14:31] Speaker 3: Kathy Thomas for the boss. If he's dead, what better
[14:36] Speaker 3: setup do you want?
[14:37] Speaker 6: What about Frank Garrett? They've still got him under arrest.
[14:41] Speaker 6: You think he'll talk? Frank will keep his mouth shut
[14:44] Speaker 6: as long as we do right by him.
[14:45] Speaker 3: We? He doesn't know about me, does he? No. I
[14:51] Speaker 3: don't leave you out. Because if he talks about me,
[14:54] Speaker 3: I talk about you. What will we do, Nick? We've
[14:58] Speaker 3: got to stop him. Now, take it easy, Richie. You're
[15:01] Speaker 3: going to bail him out.
[15:02] Speaker 1: Oh, no.
[15:03] Speaker 3: I don't want to get in the picture. You won't.
[15:05] Speaker 3: Just be ready with the dough. I know a guy
[15:08] Speaker 3: who'll handle the whole thing.
[15:21] Speaker 2: In just a moment, we'll return to Counterspy. Brought to
[15:25] Speaker 2: you by Pepsi-Cola.
[15:26] Speaker 3: Pepsi-Cola hits the spot. Two full glasses, that's a lot.
[15:30] Speaker 3: Lot more value, lot more debt. Why take less when
[15:33] Speaker 3: Pepsi's best?
[15:34] Speaker 2: More and more among fellows and girls, among mothers and dads,
[15:37] Speaker 2: you hear that sane and sensible question, why take less
[15:41] Speaker 2: when Pepsi's best? No budget, no allowance, ever had a
[15:44] Speaker 2: better friend than tangy, sparkling Pepsi-Cola. Because one big 12-ounce
[15:49] Speaker 2: Pepsi bottle gives you two delicious drinks. That's twice as
[15:53] Speaker 2: much tangy taste twice as much delicious Pepsi to go
[15:57] Speaker 2: just twice as far. That's why more and more families say,
[16:01] Speaker 2: why take less when Pepsi's best? Yes, families like yours
[16:05] Speaker 2: and mine, families all over America, they're all saying, why
[16:09] Speaker 2: take less? When Pepsi's best.
[16:12] Speaker 3: Pepsi-Cola hits the spot. Tastes terrific when you're hot. More
[16:16] Speaker 3: and better than the rest. Why take less when Pepsi's best?
[16:20] Speaker 2: Today, tomorrow, always. Get America's biggest cola value. Take home
[16:25] Speaker 2: a carton of six big, big Pepsi bottles. Insist on
[16:29] Speaker 2: Pepsi at the store. And say Pepsi at the fountain.
[16:33] Speaker 2: Say Pepsi at the stand.
[16:35] Speaker 3: Say Pepsi.
[16:36] Speaker 2: Whenever you reach for refreshments, remember... Why take less when
[16:41] Speaker 2: Pepsi's best?
[16:43] Speaker 3: And now, back to Counterspy.
[16:52] Speaker 2: In the Counterspy field office in New York, David Harding
[16:56] Speaker 2: and his assistant, Harry Peters, are again questioning the prisoner,
[17:00] Speaker 2: Frank Garrett.
[17:01] Speaker 3: Now, Garrett... I showed you this photograph once before. Yeah, yeah.
[17:06] Speaker 3: It shows Morrison, gun in hand, standing beside a man's
[17:09] Speaker 3: body on the floor. Yeah, I see. We know now
[17:12] Speaker 3: that the man on the floor is or was named
[17:16] Speaker 3: Nick Bodie. You know him?
[17:18] Speaker 6: No.
[17:19] Speaker 3: You know if he was head of the parcel post bracket?
[17:22] Speaker 3: See where that is, Peter. Right. What's the answer, Garrett? Look, Mr.
[17:26] Speaker 6: Harding, for the last time, I don't know nothing about nothing.
[17:30] Speaker 6: In fact, I'm the most ignorant guy you ever arrested.
[17:33] Speaker 6: So why don't you call it quits and let me
[17:34] Speaker 6: go back to my cell?
[17:37] Speaker 3: You won't have to, Garrett. What is it, Peters? A
[17:40] Speaker 3: lawyer named Carver has just posted bail for Garrett.
[17:43] Speaker 6: Well, now the conversation is getting pleasant.
[17:46] Speaker 3: The guard outside will see that you get your property back.
[17:49] Speaker 3: Go on, Peters.
[17:52] Speaker 1: So long, boys.
[17:57] Speaker 3: Of all the cocky little... Forget that, Peters. His being
[17:59] Speaker 3: bailed out is even better than our letting him go.
[18:01] Speaker 3: I just hate to take that from a guy like him.
[18:03] Speaker 3: Remember I thought we might use him as a decoy
[18:05] Speaker 3: for Nick Bodie? This is our chance. I'll assign an
[18:08] Speaker 3: agent to tail him right away, Dave. Well, Peters, put
[18:10] Speaker 3: on the newest man we've got in the New York office.
[18:13] Speaker 3: Garrett's no dope. It'll take an old hand to tail him.
[18:16] Speaker 3: It'll take even more than one. I'll get some new
[18:19] Speaker 3: agent out right away. And then bring the four best
[18:22] Speaker 3: men in here to me for special instructions. I want
[18:25] Speaker 3: to make sure Garrett thinks he's free to go where
[18:27] Speaker 3: he wants. Well, Garrett, feel good to be out? Yeah, yeah, sure, Mr. Carver. Uh,
[18:45] Speaker 3: you got anything else to say? Um.
[18:49] Speaker 3: They'll put a tail on you. Tell me something I
[18:52] Speaker 3: don't know. Like who gave you the money to put
[18:57] Speaker 3: up my bail.
[18:59] Speaker 7: Look, call Paradise 23416 between 10 and 10.30 tonight. It's
[19:08] Speaker 7: a lunch counter. Don't ask for anyone. If the right
[19:13] Speaker 7: man answers, your name will be the first thing he says.
[19:31] Speaker 3: That's okay, Cartman. I'm expecting a call. Frank? Garrett? Yeah. Hello, Nick.
[19:46] Speaker 3: You recognize the voice? Bye. you wouldn't forget me. You
[19:51] Speaker 3: do any talking? Not even about the weather.
[19:55] Speaker 6: But they got me on two counts, Nick.
[19:57] Speaker 3: I don't want to stand still for them. You won't
[19:59] Speaker 3: have to. I'll get you some dough and you can
[20:01] Speaker 3: jump bail. You're being tailed right now, I suppose. Yeah, yeah.
[20:07] Speaker 3: I got the guy spotted. Crew cut, boy. Strictly killed colleagues. Okay. Now,
[20:12] Speaker 3: here's how you lose them fast. You know the Cooley building,
[20:15] Speaker 3: 32nd and Broadway? Yeah. There's a side entrance with only
[20:19] Speaker 3: a revolving door. Right. Let him tailie in there. Then
[20:23] Speaker 3: double back and out the same door. When you get outside,
[20:26] Speaker 3: step on the doorstop. That'll lock the door so you
[20:29] Speaker 3: can get away before he circles the corner of the building. Right.
[20:33] Speaker 3: Cute trick. When you're sure you're clear, call me at
[20:36] Speaker 3: Mercury 4-6-thousand. Pick it up from there. Harding to Peters.
[20:53] Speaker 3: You still with Garrett? Yes, Dave. He just got out
[20:56] Speaker 3: of a cab on 32nd Street and Broadway. He's going
[21:00] Speaker 3: in the Cooley building. I'm about a half a block
[21:02] Speaker 3: behind in my car. Is Stephen still tailing him? I've
[21:08] Speaker 3: got a hunch Garrett spotted him. Well, keep in touch.
[21:11] Speaker 3: Wait a minute. Garrett just came out of the Cooley building.
[21:15] Speaker 3: There's some trouble at the door. Stevens is locked in. Good.
[21:18] Speaker 3: Garrett's back in his cab. Okay. Stay with him. Keep
[21:21] Speaker 3: in touch with the other car. Just make sure Garrett
[21:23] Speaker 3: keeps on thinking he's in the clear. Nick, you shouldn't
[21:34] Speaker 3: have told Frank Garrett to call you. This is my office.
[21:36] Speaker 3: I've got my reasons, Richie. I'll get it. Hello? Listen, Frank.
[21:45] Speaker 3: Remember Barney's Tavern? Drop in there for a drink. I'll
[21:49] Speaker 3: be there. No, don't talk to me in the tavern.
[21:52] Speaker 3: If it looks clear, I'll get up and walk out
[21:55] Speaker 3: to the parking lot around the corner where they rent cars.
[21:59] Speaker 3: I'll have one rented and settle things while we drive. Right. Okay, Richie.
[22:06] Speaker 3: You happy now? Well, for goodness sakes, get out of here.
[22:09] Speaker 3: Not without you, Richie. Where I sit, you're too comfortable.
[22:14] Speaker 3: Too nice and clean. What do you mean?
[22:17] Speaker 6: I'm the only guy who can tie you up in
[22:19] Speaker 6: this racket. Something happens to me, you're in the clear.
[22:23] Speaker 3: Look, Nick. Besides, there's no reason you couldn't walk out
[22:26] Speaker 3: on me. Then I'm out on a limb. I wouldn't
[22:29] Speaker 3: do that, Nick. Maybe not. But I believe in insurance.
[22:34] Speaker 3: Partnership insurance. I'm going to take some out on you.
[22:38] Speaker 3: Frank Garrett's help. Nick, how long are we going to
[22:53] Speaker 3: sit here?
[22:53] Speaker 2: Frank's been at that corner table two minutes already.
[22:56] Speaker 3: I'll get anxious. I just want to make sure there's
[22:59] Speaker 3: no tail on him. No one's come in since he did.
[23:02] Speaker 3: I know. I've been watching. There are no cars out
[23:05] Speaker 3: in the street. Only that truck over there.
[23:08] Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
[23:10] Speaker 3: I guess it's okay. Let's go. Garrett will follow us.
[23:28] Speaker 3: Brady in the truck to Harding. Garrett just came out.
[23:31] Speaker 6: Of the bar.
[23:32] Speaker 3: No one with him? No, sir. Uh-oh. He's going to
[23:36] Speaker 3: the parking lot on the corner. I'll get ready to tail. Peters,
[23:40] Speaker 3: how far are you from Brady? The next block, Mr.
[23:42] Speaker 5: Hardy.
[23:43] Speaker 3: Brady, give Peters the direction Garrett takes. You follow Peters. Peters,
[23:47] Speaker 3: you pick up his trail. Right, Dave. A car is
[23:51] Speaker 3: coming out of the lot now. A blue Dodge sedan.
[23:55] Speaker 3: It's Garrett. Two other men with him. Going east, Peters.
[24:00] Speaker 3: You can pick him up two blocks down. Okay, Nick,
[24:15] Speaker 3: what's the pitch? Who's this guy? Relax, Frank. We need
[24:18] Speaker 3: a chauffeur. Don't be cute. Who is he? I'll tell you, Frank.
[24:23] Speaker 3: He's the nice man who's been selling all our stuff
[24:26] Speaker 3: for us. Nick. Shut up. I want you to meet
[24:28] Speaker 3: the hired help.
[24:30] Speaker 5: Frank, this is Mr.
[24:32] Speaker 3: Richardson, the president of Product Buyers Incorporated. Nick, you've never
[24:37] Speaker 3: been so generous with information before. I want this to
[24:40] Speaker 3: be one big happy family. Besides, suppose something should happen
[24:44] Speaker 3: to me. You didn't know, Richie? Who'd help you? Nick,
[24:48] Speaker 3: let's get to the point. They got plenty of time. No, no,
[24:51] Speaker 3: not me. I want to get my dough and jump
[24:53] Speaker 3: bail before the counter flies with another tail on me.
[24:55] Speaker 3: You got a point. Hey. Car behind us. I didn't
[24:59] Speaker 3: bring no tail with me. Faster, Richie. See if that
[25:01] Speaker 3: car stays with us. Okay.
[25:07] Speaker 5: Turned off.
[25:09] Speaker 3: There's a dirt road up ahead at your left. Turn
[25:11] Speaker 3: in there, Richie. All right. Anything else behind us, Frank?
[25:16] Speaker 3: Just a laundry truck.
[25:18] Speaker 5: Let him pass us, Reggie.
[25:29] Speaker 3: Okay. Turn in. How far do I go? I'll tell
[25:38] Speaker 3: you when. How much dough you got for me, Nick?
[25:42] Speaker 3: Five grand? Five grand. Hey, I can skip the country
[25:45] Speaker 3: with that.
[25:46] Speaker 5: Why not?
[25:47] Speaker 3: Be a lot safer for everybody with you out of
[25:49] Speaker 3: the country. All right, that's good enough, Richie. Stop here.
[25:54] Speaker 3: Pick the gun. What's the matter, Frank? You seen guns before? Nick, look,
[26:01] Speaker 3: give me my dough. Let me lay them. I'm a
[26:02] Speaker 3: right guy, you know that. Sure, sure. We've been buddies
[26:07] Speaker 3: for a long time. Yeah, yeah, that's right, Nick. You wouldn't...
[26:09] Speaker 3: Kill him. What kind of a heel do you think
[26:13] Speaker 3: I am? Oh, no, no, Nick. I didn't think anything
[26:15] Speaker 3: like that. Then why should you? Now, if Richie... Nick,
[26:22] Speaker 3: you need me. Of course I do. Why should I
[26:25] Speaker 3: kill a guy I need?
[26:27] Speaker 6: We could take the dough, Nick, and we... Nick, put
[26:29] Speaker 6: those guns away. Don't get excited, Richie.
[26:32] Speaker 3: I'm giving one to you. Me? Ah, I couldn't kill
[26:36] Speaker 3: my buddy. You could... Then I wouldn't be a heel. Nick, no.
[26:41] Speaker 3: I won't do it, Nick. I can't. Richie, you'd rather
[26:47] Speaker 3: die instead of him? Look, Nick, I... Shut up, Frank.
[26:51] Speaker 3: You wanted to leave the country, and now you're going to.
[26:55] Speaker 3: Come on, Richie. I want something nice and big on you.
[27:00] Speaker 3: Like murder. Please, Nick, don't make me... Shut up. I
[27:06] Speaker 3: have to... Somebody over there in the brush. Yeah.
[27:13] Speaker 7: Peter!
[27:14] Speaker 3: Over here, whoever you are! You're covered, buddy. You're covered.
[27:16] Speaker 3: Counter fire. Hey, we'll get it. No, don't shoot. If
[27:19] Speaker 3: you want it the hard way, you get it that way. Peter,
[27:21] Speaker 3: give him a sample.
[27:24] Speaker 6: Take me!
[27:25] Speaker 3: Nick, no. Don't go on my arm, you crazy fool.
[27:27] Speaker 3: I don't want to die. It's your last chance. Come on.
[27:30] Speaker 3: Come on. I've got it. I'll kill you. He does it, Nick. Frank,
[27:33] Speaker 3: you double-crossing rat. Get him out of this picture, Dave.
[27:36] Speaker 3: Two crooks holding the third one for him. Very pretty.
[27:38] Speaker 5: The gun.
[27:39] Speaker 3: Take Bodie's gun. Drop it, Bodie. I'll drop it. No.
[27:42] Speaker 3: I said drop it. Oh, Frank, careful. Okay, get out
[27:45] Speaker 3: of that car. You're all under arrest for postal theft,
[27:48] Speaker 3: except Nick Bodie, who's also under arrest for murder. Murder?
[27:52] Speaker 3: You're nuts. You kill Jimmy Morrison and Kathy Thomas, and
[27:54] Speaker 3: we'll prove it in court. All right, sidewalking. As far
[27:57] Speaker 3: as that laundry truck down the road. Laundry truck? You've
[28:00] Speaker 3: been tailing us all this way. Right, Bodie, and we'll
[28:02] Speaker 3: keep tailing you straight up to the prison gates. The End.
[28:16] Speaker 2: When your friends drop in, be generous, but be thrifty, too.
[28:20] Speaker 2: Serve plenty of delicious Pepsi-Cola. Pepsi's big 12-ounce bottle gives
[28:25] Speaker 2: you not just one sparkling glass full, but two. Get
[28:28] Speaker 2: a carton of six and serve 12 delicious drinks. Yes,
[28:32] Speaker 2: Pepsi is America's biggest cola value. You get twice the
[28:36] Speaker 2: tangy taste, twice the refreshment, twice the Pepsi. So why
[28:40] Speaker 2: take less when Pepsi is best? Whenever you reach for refreshments, remember... Tess.
[28:46] Speaker 3: McCullough hits the spot. True progress is best to lot.
[28:50] Speaker 3: Lot for value, lot for zest. Why take less when
[28:53] Speaker 3: Tess is best?
[28:54] Speaker 2: Tune in every Tuesday and Thursday, same time, same station,
[28:57] Speaker 2: to Counterspy. Listen next Tuesday for the exciting Counterspy case
[29:03] Speaker 2: of the visiting vulture.
[29:05] Speaker 3: It was a twisting trail of big-time bootleggers your Counterspies followed.
[29:11] Speaker 3: from a small tavern in Backwoods, Mississippi, to the lakefront
[29:15] Speaker 3: of Chicago. In our Counterspy Files, we call this the
[29:20] Speaker 3: Case of the Visiting Vulture. I invite you to be
[29:23] Speaker 3: tuned in.
[29:24] Speaker 2: Next Tuesday, Case of the Visiting Vulture on Counterspy. Tonight's
[29:36] Speaker 2: Counterspy program, in part transcribed, originated in New York. was
[29:40] Speaker 2: directed by William M. Sweet, dramatized by Palmer Thompson, and
[29:44] Speaker 2: featured Don McLaughlin and Mandel Kramer, with music by Jesse Crawford.
[29:49] Speaker 2: Counterspy is a Philip Bates Lord production for Pepsi-Cola. Enjoy
[29:53] Speaker 2: some Pepsi ice cold tonight.
[30:08] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, if I were to guess which parts
[30:11] Speaker 1: were transcribed, I would think that it would be all
[30:16] Speaker 1: the parts that seem very familiar from part one. Of course,
[30:20] Speaker 1: these aren't always transcribed. I have listened to many an
[30:25] Speaker 1: episode where the program is being, you know, re-performed, and
[30:32] Speaker 1: occasionally there are differences from one part to another when
[30:36] Speaker 1: trying to do those sort of I did think Harding's
[30:41] Speaker 1: tailing scheme was clever, and that to me is the highlight.
[30:46] Speaker 1: I think that this episode just didn't quite have as
[30:50] Speaker 1: much behind it as the previous one. There may just
[30:56] Speaker 1: not have been enough story to tell. If you were
[30:59] Speaker 1: being rational, Nick's whole thing about wanting to continue the operation...
[31:06] Speaker 1: was at best premature. Maybe you had a point about
[31:09] Speaker 1: this working as a racket, but you would want to
[31:12] Speaker 1: wait some time before starting it back up. At this point,
[31:18] Speaker 1: with the counter spies having closed in, if you were smart,
[31:24] Speaker 1: you would be looking at doing damage control, making sure
[31:28] Speaker 1: that you've taken care of any leaks that could lead
[31:33] Speaker 1: back to you. So, dealing with Frank one way or
[31:38] Speaker 1: another would be sensible. Trying to have Mr. Richardson pull
[31:44] Speaker 1: the trigger was silly. What Nick had on him was
[31:49] Speaker 1: that he was the legitimate source who they were taking
[31:54] Speaker 1: all the packages to. You didn't need a murder charge
[31:57] Speaker 1: and you don't just hand a guy a gun and
[32:00] Speaker 1: expect him to become a murderer at a.
[32:04] Speaker 3: Moments notice.
[32:06] Speaker 1: I will say that this episode does mark the most
[32:11] Speaker 1: generic old-time radio corporation, Product Buyers Incorporated. I mean, how
[32:17] Speaker 1: long did it take them to come up with that?
[32:20] Speaker 1: I mean, it's straightforward. I'm from Product Buyers Incorporated. I mean,
[32:26] Speaker 1: who's going to ask a follow-up? Like, what do you do?
[32:29] Speaker 1: We buy. What do you buy?
[32:31] Speaker 3: Products.
[32:33] Speaker 1: What type of products?
[32:34] Speaker 3: All types of products.
[32:36] Speaker 1: But I digress.
[32:37] Speaker 3: All right, well, now.
