[1:36] Speaker 2: the most Violent, the lonesomest mile in the world.
[1:44] Speaker 3: Broadways might Beat with Larry Thorr as Detective Daddy Koberg.
[2:01] Speaker 2: The November morning sits down over Broadway, and for a
[2:04] Speaker 2: time the swarm stands bewildered, stares at its empty hands.
[2:09] Speaker 2: The solitude begins to shape itself once more, out of
[2:12] Speaker 2: November's winds, out of the silent, colorless neon out of
[2:16] Speaker 2: mists flaring upward from manhold. And finally the solitude is
[2:21] Speaker 2: clear and present, whispering again its desolate invitation and the
[2:25] Speaker 2: derelicts of morning run from it. Beat open a door,
[2:29] Speaker 2: plead for refuge. Find it in a time clock. It's
[2:33] Speaker 2: another day, kid, all yours and at headquarters. Do the
[2:42] Speaker 2: things of the morning. Brush the night dust off the
[2:44] Speaker 2: unfinished report. Walt up the paper cup with the dregs
[2:47] Speaker 2: of cold coffee, Toss it in the wastebasket. They're a
[2:50] Speaker 2: page of a calendar.
[2:52] Speaker 4: The shooting.
[2:53] Speaker 5: Don hold, this man says, he shuts to talk.
[2:56] Speaker 6: Here's the address.
[2:57] Speaker 2: Take it from the Sargeants go to the address. And
[3:00] Speaker 2: the man standing dropped against the wall of the apartment,
[3:03] Speaker 2: one hand in a fist pressed hard against his chest,
[3:06] Speaker 2: pushing back the fragment of light that was still inside him,
[3:09] Speaker 2: watching see through his fingers, took you, You took your time.
[3:15] Speaker 6: Let me help you out.
[3:18] Speaker 2: Oh put just stay.
[3:22] Speaker 6: Stay Chris?
[3:23] Speaker 2: Who shot you?
[3:25] Speaker 7: Stanley? Stanley glove? A little nothing worked for me.
[3:33] Speaker 6: I put to prive of this stand. Get you.
[3:42] Speaker 2: The ambulance will be here in a minute.
[3:45] Speaker 6: Keep jack handil okay, I'm di. Did you.
[3:52] Speaker 7: What you've got to do with your Alex Raven? That's me,
[4:00] Speaker 7: That's who I was. You kick that little button, hid
[4:07] Speaker 7: to kivin, and you burn, and the.
[4:15] Speaker 2: Words stopped, and briefly the mouth that moved over nothingness,
[4:18] Speaker 2: voicing nothing, moving quickly and fiffly like quicksilver, till it froze.
[4:24] Speaker 2: So the shape of it was forever because he was dead,
[4:37] Speaker 2: and after that Alex Raymond objectively, the measuring of his
[4:42] Speaker 2: death by instruments, men with cigars, the photographing of it,
[4:46] Speaker 2: the recording of it underheading files active and take a
[4:50] Speaker 2: piece of the image away with you. A name of
[4:53] Speaker 2: killer named Stanley Lawson, employee of Alex Raymond. Consult other records,
[4:59] Speaker 2: make a phone call, come up with an address, go
[5:01] Speaker 2: to it. Yes, my name's Clover. I'm from the police.
[5:10] Speaker 6: What is it you want?
[5:11] Speaker 2: I'm looking for a Stanley laws in the card on
[5:13] Speaker 2: your door.
[5:14] Speaker 6: Stanley Laws and I noted loss in his wife. Why
[5:17] Speaker 6: are you looking for him?
[5:18] Speaker 2: Suspicion of murder? Missus Lawson?
[5:22] Speaker 6: All right, coming in here. Stanley isn't home.
[5:29] Speaker 2: Where is it?
[5:30] Speaker 6: If he committed murder, he's probably running or hiding or
[5:34] Speaker 6: whatever a new murderer is supposed to do what I do?
[5:39] Speaker 6: Which one did he kill? What do you mean which one?
[5:44] Speaker 6: Raymond or Harper?
[5:45] Speaker 2: A little while ago a man named Alex Raymond said,
[5:48] Speaker 2: your husband shot him?
[5:50] Speaker 6: Then Edwin Harper must be running or hiding too.
[5:53] Speaker 2: Do you mind telling me what you're talking about?
[5:56] Speaker 6: Raymond and Harper incorporated together, the employed my husband to
[6:01] Speaker 6: make them rich. In this, my husband was successful. That
[6:05] Speaker 6: he's made one of them dead. We'll give you some
[6:07] Speaker 6: idea of how important my husband was to the concern.
[6:10] Speaker 2: You think your husband's going to kill Edwin Harper too?
[6:14] Speaker 6: My husband is what is known among educators, among partygoers,
[6:19] Speaker 6: among those who conversationally psychoanalyzed people as a plugger. The
[6:25] Speaker 6: fact that my husband has set his mind to wiping
[6:27] Speaker 6: out Raymond and Harper simply means that he had to
[6:30] Speaker 6: kill one of them first.
[6:31] Speaker 2: And none of this surprised Junis as West.
[6:34] Speaker 6: Me, least of all. I'm his wife. I attend his
[6:36] Speaker 6: emotional moments. I know about my husband.
[6:39] Speaker 2: Would you mind telling me why he killed Alex Raymond?
[6:42] Speaker 6: No, nor why he'll kill Harper. Stanley has been working
[6:48] Speaker 6: for them for fifteen years, A designer of their happy
[6:51] Speaker 6: toys for tops. He's fired and yesterday without a girl, watch,
[6:57] Speaker 6: without a pat on the back, just slip. What does
[7:02] Speaker 6: a plugger do after plugging in a pattern for fifteen years?
[7:05] Speaker 6: Stanley killed, you're wasting your time talking to me and
[7:10] Speaker 6: mister Clover. I'd find Edwin Harper if I were you,
[7:15] Speaker 6: that is, if you feel the necessity of saving his life.
[7:25] Speaker 2: And consider for a moment her easy acceptance of the
[7:28] Speaker 2: violence that had intruded on her life, the final flourish
[7:31] Speaker 2: that put an end to the meaningless pattern that had
[7:34] Speaker 2: been hers her husband's shown in the way she wraps
[7:38] Speaker 2: the tended portrait of him in the newspaper. It gives
[7:40] Speaker 2: it to your wants it back when you throw with it,
[7:43] Speaker 2: and you give her the promise leave her with it.
[7:52] Speaker 2: Then a murderer's description on the wires, the all points bulletin,
[7:55] Speaker 2: a woman's toneless voice in prowl car radios, Killer at Large,
[8:00] Speaker 2: Get it all moving, Then go to the man missus
[8:03] Speaker 2: Lawson told you about the other man her husband wants dead.
[8:07] Speaker 2: Edwin Harper. Find him in his office at the factory.
[8:10] Speaker 2: Watch him nervously caress a toy as he tries to
[8:12] Speaker 2: understand it. Look you, Alex and me, we built a
[8:15] Speaker 2: big thing here with Christmas coming on, is going to
[8:17] Speaker 2: be bigger than Alex Ramon is dead. Mister Harper, I
[8:19] Speaker 2: don't know any other way to tell you. Don't kid me, mister,
[8:22] Speaker 2: this toy I got here in my hands, our bigg as.
[8:24] Speaker 2: Now with the Alex and me, we're going to fight
[8:26] Speaker 2: all the kids in the country. But Alex Stanley Lawson
[8:30] Speaker 2: shot him, killed him in cold blood. Why why would
[8:33] Speaker 2: a little punk like Stanley do a thing like that?
[8:35] Speaker 2: Nobody does things like that. Blossom did because you fired him.
[8:38] Speaker 2: His wife told me he'd been with you for fifteen years.
[8:40] Speaker 2: There are jobs, all kinds of jobs. Are a punk
[8:42] Speaker 2: like Stanley defends janiting all kinds of jobs. We get
[8:46] Speaker 2: rid of people all the time. We don't expect to
[8:48] Speaker 2: get killed for it. Why did he get rid of Lawson?
[8:50] Speaker 2: He was washed up, prove finished dead. That's why missus
[8:53] Speaker 2: Lawson gives a thing for what she's hit. What she
[8:56] Speaker 2: tell you that her Stanley with the brains of our outfit,
[8:59] Speaker 2: that he sweat blood and tears were like to me
[9:02] Speaker 2: that he was devoted, loyal one hundred percent. That's what
[9:05] Speaker 2: she told you something like them, So maybe it's true.
[9:08] Speaker 2: Maybe that's how it was. We picked his brain and
[9:10] Speaker 2: then all of a sudden he don't come up with
[9:11] Speaker 2: anything anymore. Looks a designer who can't design anymore?
[9:15] Speaker 6: Who needs you?
[9:16] Speaker 2: I got to live too, You got weight to throw
[9:19] Speaker 2: it away? Yeah? You got any ideas where loss and
[9:22] Speaker 2: might go to hide? And in particular place? You mean
[9:25] Speaker 2: that punk that murder is done the loose? You haven't
[9:28] Speaker 2: got him, No, that's thought. Maybe you could help help.
[9:30] Speaker 2: It's me you got to help. Don't pendetate you next
[9:33] Speaker 2: heat want me, We'll take care of it. Mister Harper. Look,
[9:37] Speaker 2: I got no intention of dying, none at all, not
[9:39] Speaker 2: from Stanley, not from anything. It's your responsibility. You understand that.
[9:42] Speaker 2: You got to clear. I'm not going to die Kunning Clover,
[9:59] Speaker 2: Huh yeah, I'm detective Kenny. Oh sure, sure, come money. Yeah,
[10:04] Speaker 2: I've got the notation right here on my desk. You've

[10:08] Speaker 2: is on vacasion. That's right, sir. I've got some information
[10:11] Speaker 2: for you, but Benny about Stanley Lawson, rather negative information,

[10:18] Speaker 2: just tell me about it, Yes, sir, all these from communications.
[10:22] Speaker 2: Stanley Lawson was seen going into a theater on forty
[10:25] Speaker 2: second Street, and at the same time this other report

[10:43] Speaker 2: A pardoner Danny Clover speaking. This is Evan. He called me.
[10:48] Speaker 2: He just called me Lawson. He wants me to meet
[10:50] Speaker 2: him to bring money to him. He says he'd killed me.
[10:52] Speaker 1: If my god, you're not going to let him kill.
[10:54] Speaker 2: Where are you supposed to meet him? Of sixteenth at
[10:58] Speaker 2: nine o'clock if you take I'm going. Yeah, you're great.
[11:01] Speaker 2: I'm stayed right here. You've got to protect me. Don't
[11:03] Speaker 2: worry about a thing. We'll take care of it. Goodbye,
[11:05] Speaker 2: mister Harper. Kenny, Yes, report to me after you've had
[11:08] Speaker 2: your dinner. We've got something to take care of. Lieutenant Clover.

[11:31] Speaker 2: Did everything set up? Kenny, Yes, sir, lights pa. We've
[11:35] Speaker 2: got a cordon around the whole block. As far as

[11:41] Speaker 2: the street.
[11:42] Speaker 6: Uh huh.
[11:42] Speaker 2: The tenement's unoccupied, sir, it's condemned. But a few minutes
[11:46] Speaker 2: ago we saw some movement up on the second floor

[12:19] Speaker 2: asking Kenny, Kenny, you officer, get an ambulance, you and
[12:26] Speaker 2: you cover me. I'm going in after him. You just
[12:40] Speaker 2: shot an officer, Lawson, throw away your gun and come
[12:43] Speaker 2: on down, or you won't get out of here alive.
[12:48] Speaker 2: All right, Lawson, any way you wanted, you're not going
[12:57] Speaker 2: to get me. Stop Lassen stop. I told you to
[13:13] Speaker 2: stop Lasson you.
[13:16] Speaker 6: You made a mistake.
[13:18] Speaker 8: I didn't kund.
[13:25] Speaker 6: All of mistake.
[13:41] Speaker 3: You are listening to Broadway is My Beach, written by
[13:44] Speaker 3: Martin Fine and David Freakin and starring Larry Thor as
[13:47] Speaker 3: Detective Danny Clover.
[13:50] Speaker 2: Sh The light that curtains Broadway in late November is
[14:02] Speaker 2: a thing of gauze gray stuff that touches autumn with December.
[14:07] Speaker 2: It's the time when the shadows come in with the sun,
[14:09] Speaker 2: the time of the three coffee breakfast, the sweater and
[14:12] Speaker 2: the vest under the coat, but the pluck birds hang high.
[14:16] Speaker 2: There are stocks of corn and pumpkin pie behind moist
[14:20] Speaker 2: shop windows. It's holiday season, and up and down the
[14:23] Speaker 2: furious street chef's smile. There's no problem for Thursday's blueplate special.
[14:30] Speaker 2: Forget the headline's kid. Everywhere everybody'll be eating turkey, it says.
[14:40] Speaker 2: But when the new day comes. The light that drifts
[14:42] Speaker 2: into a hospital room has another texture because it lies
[14:46] Speaker 2: against clean walls and starched curtains before it touches a bed,
[14:50] Speaker 2: a bed where a man named Stanley Lawson lay a
[14:53] Speaker 2: murder suspect, and his wife considers him.
[14:57] Speaker 6: Look at him, mister Clover in this stat is shot.
[15:01] Speaker 6: Isn't that what your doctors called the chock so clinical?
[15:06] Speaker 6: Meaning his mind is rejected him.
[15:08] Speaker 2: Finally, you expect me to feel sorry for him, missus.
[15:11] Speaker 6: Lawson, only for yourself, because you were forced to do
[15:15] Speaker 6: what you did. Shoot him. Talk with yourself, convince yourself
[15:20] Speaker 6: you did the only thing possible. My husband can't talk.
[15:24] Speaker 6: Who's the happier man?
[15:25] Speaker 2: I can't answer anything about your husband, missus Lawson. The
[15:28] Speaker 2: only thing I know about him for sure is that
[15:30] Speaker 2: he shot a police officer. That he did that tempers
[15:33] Speaker 2: all my thinking about him.
[15:35] Speaker 6: How is the officer bad?
[15:39] Speaker 2: Very bad?
[15:40] Speaker 6: I'm sorry, I know you are, mister Clover. Yes, you
[15:47] Speaker 6: said you were sure only that Stanley shot a police officer.
[15:51] Speaker 6: What about Alex Raymond?
[15:53] Speaker 2: Your husband probably shot him too, probably before he passed out.
[15:57] Speaker 2: Your husband said something, said that everything was a mistake
[16:02] Speaker 2: just then.
[16:04] Speaker 6: But everything is a mistake, everything always is. Look at him,
[16:10] Speaker 6: a man, a life, Look what's become of it?
[16:17] Speaker 2: The resident says he has a good chance to live,
[16:19] Speaker 2: missus Lawson.
[16:20] Speaker 6: That's fine. May I be along with him for a
[16:24] Speaker 6: whiles to cover the Please.
[16:40] Speaker 2: Don't perform me anymore.
[16:42] Speaker 8: Out the window, Benny say.
[16:45] Speaker 2: Compreek with your lunch. Thanks, you know you're not shopping bank?
[16:50] Speaker 2: Oh I gave you was thirty five sands per sandwich.
[16:52] Speaker 5: Not only did I get your lunch, Daddy, but I
[16:54] Speaker 5: brought by change.
[16:56] Speaker 6: When did you see?
[16:57] Speaker 2: All right?
[16:59] Speaker 5: That's just delegatess and Danny. All I got to mention
[17:02] Speaker 5: is I am here for Danny Clover. I don't even
[17:05] Speaker 5: need a number to get waiter on.
[17:06] Speaker 2: What's all that stuff? You know?
[17:08] Speaker 5: Your name is magic, Danny. I are you your hot
[17:11] Speaker 5: Postrami sandwich?
[17:12] Speaker 6: The boys and sister?
[17:13] Speaker 2: Isn't enough?
[17:14] Speaker 5: Got to have washpies? What washbies?
[17:18] Speaker 2: Danny? An expression meaning you.
[17:20] Speaker 5: Got a free little delicacy from each of the poor
[17:22] Speaker 5: boys or golashbis from Sid a container cole slaw from Eddie,
[17:29] Speaker 5: that potato salad with cell receive from Frank a slice haliba,
[17:34] Speaker 5: and from.
[17:34] Speaker 6: Her a.
[17:37] Speaker 5: Coach. Your pickles slipped into my hand under the table,
[17:41] Speaker 5: Eat Danny, eating good.
[17:42] Speaker 2: Helping quite a hole, Serge.
[17:44] Speaker 5: You're welcome. I'm sure I also got along and got
[17:48] Speaker 5: them you asked I should pick up on my.
[17:49] Speaker 2: Way back upstairs. Yeah, you're a ball of fire today,
[17:52] Speaker 2: you know.
[17:52] Speaker 5: Thank you, I'm sure, and then tott them. Number one,
[17:56] Speaker 5: the gun with which Stanley Lawson committed murder upon Alex Raymond,
[17:59] Speaker 5: and did Detective Kenny.
[18:02] Speaker 2: The boys can't find that. I haven't do it as yet,
[18:05] Speaker 2: no loss. Some shoots out of that tenement window hits Kenny.
[18:09] Speaker 2: I'm going right after him. We can't find his gun.
[18:11] Speaker 2: This is a puzzle.
[18:12] Speaker 5: Then a fleeing fugitive off pauses away the weapon with
[18:16] Speaker 5: which he commented, Mayhem threw a window down a pipe.
[18:19] Speaker 5: That's what else have you got, you know, Adam Number
[18:22] Speaker 5: two concerning to decease Dalx Raymond, which you requested. It
[18:25] Speaker 5: seems that mister Raymond, as it must do, all men
[18:28] Speaker 5: have a girlfriend where a miss Gray's kildren Daddy Regent
[18:32] Speaker 5: powers West twenty three. However, why you need such? I
[18:36] Speaker 5: may answer it for you, Danny, and go ahead, Danny
[18:39] Speaker 5: Clovis office sergeant thought.
[18:42] Speaker 2: What No, Yeah, I'll tell him, tell me what you know.
[18:52] Speaker 9: Give me a minute, Kenny, Kenny the taptive, Kenny, he's dead.
[19:03] Speaker 2: Watch Gino turn, walk quickly out of the room, go
[19:07] Speaker 2: searching for some empty place where the quick sorrow can't
[19:10] Speaker 2: be seen heard, And in a little while look out
[19:14] Speaker 2: the wind of see him, hatless, without a coat, wandering
[19:18] Speaker 2: the sidewalk, wandering the autumn wind, go to him, hand
[19:23] Speaker 2: him his coat and walk with him. Try to ease
[19:27] Speaker 2: it from him, explain it to him, to yourself. The
[19:32] Speaker 2: stairs are the passers by. Tell you you're not doing
[19:36] Speaker 2: real good. Then the brief time of being along with it,
[19:45] Speaker 2: the time it takes to get the twenty third street
[19:47] Speaker 2: to the region towers to a girl name of Grace Gilrin,
[19:51] Speaker 2: and for her instant in your life, let go of it.
[19:55] Speaker 6: You're a policeman. Why won't they think?
[19:57] Speaker 2: Up next, we'll talk to you, missus Gilrin? Up to Alex.
[20:01] Speaker 6: Alex Raymond. He's dead, you know, dead and gone?
[20:05] Speaker 2: You want to talk about it here in the hall?
[20:07] Speaker 6: Oh glad you thought of the first. Come on in
[20:09] Speaker 6: good good that Chimsey divan over there, you look good on.
[20:16] Speaker 2: That Alex Raymond? Just about him.
[20:18] Speaker 10: I've read how you punched a bulletle and his killer.
[20:21] Speaker 10: What more can a man ask for?
[20:23] Speaker 2: Some things? I need to know.
[20:25] Speaker 6: About me, about me with Alex.
[20:28] Speaker 2: Do you ever talk to you about his factory, about
[20:30] Speaker 2: the people who work for him?
[20:31] Speaker 10: You mean the boy who put it to Alex? You
[20:34] Speaker 10: mean Stanley Lawson.
[20:35] Speaker 2: Don't you know that's right?
[20:38] Speaker 6: Killer?
[20:39] Speaker 10: Murderer, pale, little man like him? The things that go
[20:44] Speaker 10: on inside these pale little men. Surprise is a girl?
[20:47] Speaker 2: What did Raymond tell you about him?
[20:50] Speaker 6: Just enough to bring up the arms? How Lawson was
[20:53] Speaker 6: quite a designer.
[20:54] Speaker 2: Then why did they fire him?
[20:55] Speaker 6: Beat me too? Especially after that XK twenty, the x
[20:59] Speaker 6: K t what's that?
[21:01] Speaker 10: The secret weapon of the Raymond and Harper Company? A
[21:03] Speaker 10: toy rocket ship zooms fitz flame be toppy.
[21:08] Speaker 6: You'll see them of the millions in the Christmas country.
[21:10] Speaker 2: Lowson designed it and they fired him for that.
[21:13] Speaker 10: You know now that you mention it, it makes me
[21:15] Speaker 10: one day. But what it was going to be a
[21:18] Speaker 10: surprise to Lawson. He brought in the first model of
[21:21] Speaker 10: the XK twenty last June, made it on his own time.
[21:25] Speaker 10: Alex and Edwin Harper looked at it and said it.
[21:28] Speaker 6: Was just nothing.
[21:30] Speaker 2: But you know what, just tell me.
[21:32] Speaker 10: They showed it to a buyer. Anyhow, the buyer ordered
[21:35] Speaker 10: a thousand gross on the spot, so that a half
[21:38] Speaker 10: dozen other buyers.
[21:39] Speaker 2: But they didn't tell Lawson about it.
[21:42] Speaker 10: In fact, just to make it more of a surprise
[21:44] Speaker 10: for laws and they had the toy manufactured by a
[21:46] Speaker 10: subcontractor out of town. I'll tell you something else. Alex
[21:52] Speaker 10: was pretty might make a midion out of that XK
[21:54] Speaker 10: twenty a million XK twenty.
[22:00] Speaker 2: Where do you.
[22:02] Speaker 6: Confused? Is a girl like me? Hi? Donny, Danny, wait
[22:21] Speaker 6: for me?
[22:21] Speaker 2: What's on your mind? You know here I should today
[22:25] Speaker 2: all wrapped up ready to go. Oh they found the gun?
[22:27] Speaker 6: Where wedge between them.
[22:29] Speaker 5: To bring in an old tire in the backyard of
[22:31] Speaker 5: the tournament?
[22:31] Speaker 2: Well lost? And then Daday Flora, how come I wasn't
[22:34] Speaker 2: found sooner? Why ask me?
[22:36] Speaker 5: I wasn't there?
[22:36] Speaker 2: I don't know. Do something for me, you know, go
[22:39] Speaker 2: upstairs and get the fingerprints of everybody connected with this case.
[22:42] Speaker 2: Then take the Prince and the gun down the Gordon
[22:44] Speaker 2: technical Tell God'll be there in a half hour. Okay,
[22:47] Speaker 2: Denny Well, Danny Clover, I make you that happy Jordan.
[23:09] Speaker 2: Look Gordon. A little while ago, Sergeant A. Tagly came
[23:12] Speaker 2: down here with his grubby fizz a glow of things
[23:15] Speaker 2: for Gordon. For me to take care for you, because
[23:18] Speaker 2: I'm the only one who can a gun and a
[23:21] Speaker 2: few sets of fingerprints, you know. My advice to you,
[23:24] Speaker 2: so help me. Gorton Bury sickly threats from such a
[23:27] Speaker 2: big man. My advice to you Lieutenant is to keep
[23:30] Speaker 2: your mouth open and amazement and let your jaw hang there.
[23:35] Speaker 2: I've got a goodie for you. Okay, what is it?
[23:38] Speaker 2: The prince on the gun? You know who those are?
[23:41] Speaker 2: Lieutenant Losses, A dead man, Alex Raymond, a man who
[23:46] Speaker 2: felt dead in your arms yesterday afternoon? You kidding? If
[23:50] Speaker 2: I was kidding, you'd be laughing. But your jaws hanging
[23:53] Speaker 2: the way I said it would. Raymond, a man who
[23:57] Speaker 2: died yesterday afternoon, also left his and son a gun
[24:00] Speaker 2: that killed an officer who died last night. Very picky,
[24:05] Speaker 2: isn't it?
[24:18] Speaker 6: Look?
[24:18] Speaker 2: Mister Clover to pick me up at my place and
[24:21] Speaker 2: I came along with you without questions. Don't you think
[24:23] Speaker 2: it's time you told me what this is all about.
[24:25] Speaker 2: The last apartment in this corridor is a homeless family lawson,
[24:28] Speaker 2: the man who used to be your toy designer. I see,
[24:32] Speaker 2: what do you expect me to do?
[24:33] Speaker 6: Look at it?
[24:34] Speaker 2: Feel sorry for the people in zis his wife the
[24:37] Speaker 2: only one inside? You'd better briefly on what I'm supposed
[24:40] Speaker 2: to say to a woman whose husband killed my partner,
[24:43] Speaker 2: murdered an officer of the law. It'll come to.
[24:46] Speaker 6: You good evening, mister Clover, this lasso, this is mister Harper.
[24:57] Speaker 6: Will youse come in? My husband talked about you often,
[25:01] Speaker 6: mister Harper.
[25:02] Speaker 2: I want you to know how sorry I am about
[25:05] Speaker 2: what's happened. You're sorry, you really are, of course I am.
[25:11] Speaker 2: That's strange, missus Lawson. I was brought here for what reason?
[25:16] Speaker 6: I don't change because my husband always said you were
[25:19] Speaker 6: a shrewd businessman. He never told me you were a liar.
[25:23] Speaker 2: Look, Clover, what is all this? You said you were
[25:26] Speaker 2: sorry about what happened, and missus Lawson called you a liar.
[25:30] Speaker 2: In fact, Missus Lawson, that you're the wife of a
[25:33] Speaker 2: murderer makes anything you say pretty unimportant.
[25:36] Speaker 6: Mister Cloger, Yes, I talked to my husband about an
[25:39] Speaker 6: hour ago. I know.
[25:41] Speaker 2: That's why we've come here. If you too want to
[25:43] Speaker 2: chap your mind, if I leave mind.
[25:44] Speaker 6: You know all about it. Mister Kloger, the.
[25:47] Speaker 2: Police stenographer was in the hospital room when you spoke
[25:49] Speaker 2: with your husband. Showed me the transcript.
[25:52] Speaker 6: Do you believe what my husband told me?
[25:54] Speaker 2: Yes? Is your husband going to live?
[25:59] Speaker 6: I don't know what about you, mister Happer, What what
[26:06] Speaker 6: about him?
[26:07] Speaker 2: He's here? I suppose you just take me back where
[26:10] Speaker 2: you got me. Mister Clover, just who do you think
[26:12] Speaker 2: you were?
[26:12] Speaker 6: Hopper?
[26:13] Speaker 2: I wanted you to meet missus Lawson. I wanted you
[26:16] Speaker 2: to see her home. Go ahead, look around. This is
[26:19] Speaker 2: a home, mister Harper. This is a place where two
[26:21] Speaker 2: people made their lives. You'll never know what comes out
[26:23] Speaker 2: of these homes you. I got a little piece of
[26:25] Speaker 2: news for you, Harper. Lawson didn't kill your partner. Crazy
[26:30] Speaker 2: you were this, yeah, I know. But Lawson didn't kill
[26:33] Speaker 2: none of everything I've got fitted together. He didn't kill
[26:35] Speaker 2: now Colm Cord. Lawson went to Alex Raymond pleaded for
[26:39] Speaker 2: his job, demanded his job because he was frantic, because
[26:41] Speaker 2: he'd given you and Raymond fifteen years of his life.
[26:44] Speaker 6: We paid him well, Thank you very much, mister Hopper.
[26:47] Speaker 2: Demanded his job. Raymond pulled a gun and told him
[26:50] Speaker 2: to get out. Bowson wouldn't. Raymond threatened him. There was
[26:53] Speaker 2: a fight. The gun went off. Raymond had shot himself
[26:56] Speaker 2: in the struggle. Lawson fled, but Raymond told you, I know, oh,
[27:00] Speaker 2: he told me Losson had shot him. It was Raymond's
[27:03] Speaker 2: revenge for dying. The alleged killer had fled. We made
[27:06] Speaker 2: only a curse research for the murder weapon. This is ridiculous.
[27:08] Speaker 2: I'm getting out of here.
[27:09] Speaker 6: If you moved, mister Hawker, I'll find something to kill
[27:12] Speaker 6: you with.
[27:13] Speaker 2: I'll take care of him. Missus, what do you mean
[27:16] Speaker 2: you will take care of me? What have I got
[27:19] Speaker 2: to do with all this? Lawson called you, told you
[27:21] Speaker 2: what had happened, asked you to meet him, thanked for
[27:23] Speaker 2: your help, demanded money to leave town. I told you
[27:26] Speaker 2: that would hold except for one thing. A gun with
[27:30] Speaker 2: Raymond's prints on it. Not losson is because he never
[27:32] Speaker 2: held the gun. Ne held a gun he killed a
[27:35] Speaker 2: policeman with it, didn't lean No. After the phone call,
[27:39] Speaker 2: you went to Raymond's apartment, found the gun that Raymond
[27:41] Speaker 2: had hidden away to make it appear that Lawson was
[27:43] Speaker 2: a murderer. Then you went to the tenement head.
[27:48] Speaker 6: Why why should I do that?
[27:51] Speaker 2: I'll get to that. You hid in that tenement during
[27:54] Speaker 2: the stake of When I called it to Lawson, it
[27:55] Speaker 2: was you fired those shots, killed a policeman. You wore
[27:59] Speaker 2: gloves so that Raymond's princes would still be on the gun.
[28:03] Speaker 2: Now I'll tell you why you did all this. If
[28:08] Speaker 2: you can here wherever I am. This is why you
[28:11] Speaker 2: did it. Raymond was dead. You got a new toy
[28:15] Speaker 2: on the market that's going to make you a lot
[28:17] Speaker 2: of money, the toy that lost and brought you get
[28:20] Speaker 2: him out of the way, and all that money was yours.
[28:22] Speaker 2: No strings, No give me that gun, missus laws.
[28:26] Speaker 6: You don't try to take it away from me. Do
[28:28] Speaker 6: you understand about me, mister Clover? You know what I do?
[28:32] Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I know.
[28:34] Speaker 6: Pray for something, mister Harper, All right.
[28:39] Speaker 2: All right, I confess to you. I did it. I
[28:42] Speaker 2: did everything he said.
[28:43] Speaker 6: But don't do me. Is that what you call a prayer?
[28:51] Speaker 6: Don't let her do it? Please? Please?
[28:54] Speaker 1: How did I go?
[28:55] Speaker 2: Want to die?
[28:57] Speaker 6: He won't listen to me. Killing?
[29:01] Speaker 2: Killing? This is what you wanted, is miss missus Lawson.
[29:06] Speaker 6: Yeah, and it's enough. Take him on.
[29:35] Speaker 2: Broadway is sleeping now, and the people of the chasm
[29:38] Speaker 2: have gone home. Only the sleepwalkers are there, and the
[29:43] Speaker 2: dream seekers.
[29:44] Speaker 6: The shadow dwellers.
[29:46] Speaker 2: It's slimble time when the sodden dance, the derelicts, the
[29:51] Speaker 2: hugger is close of nothing. It's Broadway, the gaudiest, the
[29:58] Speaker 2: most violent, the monsromous mile in the world. Broadway My Beat.
[30:20] Speaker 11: Tonight on FPN presents You've been listening to some of
[30:23] Speaker 11: the best in radio drama with Bibber McGhee and Molly
[30:27] Speaker 11: and Broadway as My Beats. Join us again Monday evening
[30:31] Speaker 11: at the same time Mine Old Fox whenn presents drag
[30:35] Speaker 11: Nets and.
[30:36] Speaker 8: Escape Welcome Back.
[30:58] Speaker 1: Well, I really episode. I love the mystery and the
[31:04] Speaker 1: solution to the case, and there were also some good
[31:06] Speaker 1: emotional moments, including the final confrontation. Now, of course, the
[31:13] Speaker 1: confession that was provided is not going to be legally admissible,
[31:19] Speaker 1: but I don't think that was really the point, at
[31:22] Speaker 1: least not on the wife's part. It gave her this
[31:26] Speaker 1: cathartic moment in the face of a man who tried
[31:30] Speaker 1: to ruin her husband's life and her life for financial
[31:37] Speaker 1: gain and to steal from them this grand invention and
[31:43] Speaker 1: what he was willing to do in order to make
[31:46] Speaker 1: that happen. I do have to say that Raymond is
[31:53] Speaker 1: exceedingly spotful. There's a reason that we tend to take
[32:00] Speaker 1: dying declarations seriously, because most people when they're dying aren't
[32:06] Speaker 1: going to lie. But I guess there are exceptions to
[32:10] Speaker 1: every rule. Also, like the moment when Tartaglia learned of
[32:19] Speaker 1: Officer Kenney's death and was so affected by it, and
[32:24] Speaker 1: Danny coming to his aid with his coat. It's a
[32:28] Speaker 1: great moment, and in a weird way, it's a very
[32:32] Speaker 1: visual scene, which you don't usually talk about much in audio,
[32:37] Speaker 1: but I think this is a great example of it.
[32:41] Speaker 1: You just imagine that picture in your mind, and it
[32:45] Speaker 1: does reflect that Danny really does care about Tartaglia as
[32:53] Speaker 1: a person. But the scene was still an understated scene
[32:58] Speaker 1: even though it was told to ex position, which can
[33:01] Speaker 1: be a tricky balance to strike. Of course, they still
[33:05] Speaker 1: had a job to do, and even though Danny cared
[33:09] Speaker 1: for Tartanklia, he gave him the unenviable task of going
[33:13] Speaker 1: to see Gordon.
[33:15] Speaker 8: Gordon is by.
[33:16] Speaker 1: Far the most insufferable recurring character on this program. He
[33:22] Speaker 1: manages to make simple ratory tests that any forensic criminologists
[33:33] Speaker 1: anywhere else in the country would just do and not
[33:37] Speaker 1: make a big deal about. He tends to want to
[33:42] Speaker 1: build him up like they're the labors of Hercules, and
[33:45] Speaker 1: he is an intellectual giant towering above humanity. I mean
[33:52] Speaker 1: I at the time, I was somewhat critical of Danny's
[33:56] Speaker 1: overbearing narration about the people from Technical But if we
[34:02] Speaker 1: had introduced Gordon before that scene, I don't think I
[34:08] Speaker 1: could be critical at all. All right, well, listener comments
[34:12] Speaker 1: and feedback now, and we are going to Patreon where
[34:16] Speaker 1: Emmett comments on our four thousand, nine hundred and fiftieth
[34:19] Speaker 1: episode special. What a pleasant surprise this one was. All
[34:24] Speaker 1: too often comedy doesn't age well, certainly not as well
[34:28] Speaker 1: as a mystery. This one, though, seemed to have a
[34:30] Speaker 1: totally different attitude, and I found myself laughing out loud
[34:33] Speaker 1: at some of the lines. I kind of thought he'd
[34:36] Speaker 1: fall into a trash can, but finding a melon, a
[34:39] Speaker 1: melon in his mouth was laugh out loud funny. I
[34:43] Speaker 1: hope you can find a few others in this series
[34:45] Speaker 1: that may be similar. Well, I don't know if we'll
[34:48] Speaker 1: find any more like that. Emma and I appreciate the comment,
[34:51] Speaker 1: but proudly we hail did a lot of different episodes
[34:57] Speaker 1: in a variety of styles, and hopefully we will get
[35:01] Speaker 1: a chance to revisit that series, because it, in my mind,
[35:06] Speaker 1: is a bit underrated for just some good usually like
[35:11] Speaker 1: comedy or what dramatic entertainment, though occasionally a little bit
[35:16] Speaker 1: of military adventure thrown in. But again, thanks so much
[35:19] Speaker 1: appreciate the comment Emitt. Now it's time to thank our
[35:23] Speaker 1: Patreon supporter of the day. Thank you to Zant, Patreon

[35:39] Speaker 1: And that will do it for today. If you're enjoying

[35:54] Speaker 1: another episode of Broadways My Bait. But join us back
[35:58] Speaker 1: here tomorrow for right now, where.
[36:01] Speaker 2: The purpose of the record may we ask whether that
[36:03] Speaker 2: was in the morning or the afternoon.
[36:05] Speaker 4: Was that in the morning or in the PM PM?
[36:08] Speaker 2: Can you tell us what she saw the defendant do
[36:10] Speaker 2: and what you heard him say at that place.
[36:12] Speaker 4: You made before the hold up at nine thirty? Please
[36:15] Speaker 4: tell us what occurred? Well, I came in about nine
[36:18] Speaker 4: thirty the place. He was already sitting there at the bar.
[36:22] Speaker 2: Continue.
[36:23] Speaker 12: I came in and sat down at the end of
[36:25] Speaker 12: the bar. He was sitting about five stools from the door.
[36:29] Speaker 12: Friend of mine, Doris Senway, she's here now. Doris was
[36:35] Speaker 12: sitting near him. I would open talk to Doris for
[36:37] Speaker 12: a while. The man didn't say anything, he was just
[36:39] Speaker 12: sitting there.
[36:40] Speaker 4: Did you see him drinking anything? Yes, he's drinking scotch
[36:43] Speaker 4: and soda. You're the wife of George Holloway deceased. Is
[36:47] Speaker 4: that correct? Yes? Was he present then?
[36:50] Speaker 6: Baby?
[36:51] Speaker 4: Was your husband George Holloway present at that time? Yes,
[36:53] Speaker 4: he's tending the bar by that.
[36:55] Speaker 2: Do you mean that your husband, yourself and the defendant
[36:58] Speaker 2: were the only person's present.
[36:59] Speaker 6: No.
[37:00] Speaker 4: Oh, my friend Dorris Fendley, who's the singer there too.
[37:03] Speaker 4: I don't know who he had. He sat next to
[37:05] Speaker 4: the defendant.
[37:07] Speaker 12: What it could Then, as we were ready to close
[37:10] Speaker 12: the front door, my husband noticed the light and men's worship.
[37:13] Speaker 8: I moved that go out.
[37:14] Speaker 4: What her husband notice as a conclusion and witness they
[37:18] Speaker 4: go out?
[37:19] Speaker 12: Well anyway, my husband went back in to put the
[37:22] Speaker 12: light up. URIs Fendlack and I went up to the sidewalk,
[37:26] Speaker 12: so did the sayer and Defello did too.
[37:30] Speaker 1: Yes, I hope you'll be with us then in the meantime,
