[1:43] Speaker 2: names have been changed to protect the innocent. You're a
[1:53] Speaker 2: detective sergeant. You're assigned to homicide detail. An unidentified woman
[1:58] Speaker 2: has found murdered in a hotel room cause of death strangulation.
[2:03] Speaker 2: There's no lead to the identity of the killer.
[2:06] Speaker 3: Your job find him.
[2:17] Speaker 4: Dragnet the documented drama of an actual crime. For the
[2:21] Speaker 4: next thirty minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
[2:25] Speaker 4: you will travel step by step on the side of
[2:27] Speaker 4: the law through an actual case transcribed from official police violence,
[2:32] Speaker 4: from beginning to end, from crime to punishment. Dragnet is
[2:36] Speaker 4: the story of your police force in action.
[2:43] Speaker 5: It was Tuesday, October twenty seventh. It was cold in
[2:45] Speaker 5: Los Angeles. We're working the day watch out a homicide.
[2:48] Speaker 5: My partner's Ben Romero. The boss' is Thad Brown, Chief
[2:50] Speaker 5: of Detectives.
[2:51] Speaker 6: My name is Friday.
[2:52] Speaker 5: It was one thirty five pm when we got to
[2:54] Speaker 5: the old Central Jail Building, third floor the crime lamb.
[2:58] Speaker 7: How are you doing length, Joe?
[3:00] Speaker 6: How's it going? Did you check the stuff yet?
[3:02] Speaker 8: Yeah?
[3:02] Speaker 9: Most of it? Come on back here? Kay, well this
[3:05] Speaker 9: is all of it.
[3:07] Speaker 6: Did you find anything we can get a lead out of?
[3:08] Speaker 9: Nothing? Too good?
[3:09] Speaker 10: No, I don't think you could identify her from what
[3:11] Speaker 10: we've got here the Morgue post about it yet?
[3:13] Speaker 6: Yeah? Just this morning? How about fingerprints?
[3:16] Speaker 4: Lead?
[3:16] Speaker 6: They find any in that hotel?
[3:17] Speaker 9: No farm prints, no dead end there?
[3:19] Speaker 7: What about the woman's purse? Did you anything.
[3:21] Speaker 10: No chance you can see the fabric here, won't take
[3:23] Speaker 10: a print. Contents of the purse here, usual stuff, comb, lipstick,
[3:28] Speaker 10: key chain, one key on it, half pack of chewing
[3:30] Speaker 10: gum coin pursts are dying, two nickels in it.
[3:33] Speaker 9: That's all it.
[3:35] Speaker 6: According to the room truck at the hotel, she had
[3:36] Speaker 6: a wallet weather when she checked in. There's no sign
[3:38] Speaker 6: of that was it?
[3:39] Speaker 9: No sign of it in the hotel room either, checked everything.
[3:42] Speaker 2: Is that?
[3:42] Speaker 7: The only piece of jewelry found on the body. That
[3:44] Speaker 7: wedding ring there.
[3:45] Speaker 10: Yeah, it's a cheap ring, no markings on it, no
[3:47] Speaker 10: way of tracing it. But the only thing I can
[3:49] Speaker 10: tell you if she was pretty well dressed. That's an
[3:52] Speaker 10: expensive bag there, Yeah, showing out a cheap dress either.
[3:55] Speaker 10: Same for a coat and shoes. They cost the money too.
[3:58] Speaker 6: How about labels on any of that stuff?
[4:00] Speaker 10: One on the coat, Yeah, and can see right here.
[4:02] Speaker 10: Ben with Department Stare Los Angeles coach fairly knew they
[4:06] Speaker 10: might be able to give you something on it. Maybe
[4:09] Speaker 10: the people at the hotel got anything there.
[4:11] Speaker 5: Could have been bitterly. The woman checked in last night
[4:13] Speaker 5: around eight o'clock. She registered as John Ross.
[4:16] Speaker 9: And wife La didn't even see the man with.
[4:18] Speaker 5: It, No nobody broom clerk says the woman came in alone.
[4:22] Speaker 5: She said her husband was out parking the car, so
[4:24] Speaker 5: she registered for both of them. Clerk said he left
[4:26] Speaker 5: the desk a few minutes after that. Figures the man
[4:29] Speaker 5: must have come in sometime while he was gone. Nobody
[4:31] Speaker 5: on duty at the desk after midnight. He could have
[4:34] Speaker 5: left the hotel anytime after that without being seen.
[4:36] Speaker 7: She registered at eight pm the corner and says she
[4:38] Speaker 7: died about ten thirty.
[4:39] Speaker 9: You're not even sure there was a man with that. Yeah.
[4:42] Speaker 7: The woman who was raised next door to the murdering room,
[4:45] Speaker 7: she told her she heard a man and a woman
[4:46] Speaker 7: arguing it was about ten o'clock.
[4:48] Speaker 11: Could have got pretty loud.
[4:50] Speaker 10: No idea who the woman really was, huh. I suppose
[4:53] Speaker 10: that John Ross and wife business doesn't mean anything.
[4:56] Speaker 6: That's pretty doubtful. But all we got to go on
[4:58] Speaker 6: is the physical description from the corner. She's a small
[5:01] Speaker 6: woman five foot one ninety nine quarter pounds, wasn't they been? Yeah,
[5:06] Speaker 6: brown hair, blue eyes, about thirty one, thirty two years old.
[5:09] Speaker 6: We got our prints off to Washington.
[5:11] Speaker 9: Got any idea.
[5:13] Speaker 5: We figured maybe it could be a psycho killer. How
[5:15] Speaker 5: did you figure The corner's report listed strangulation is the
[5:17] Speaker 5: cause of death.
[5:19] Speaker 6: Whoever did it made sure her neck was broken.
[5:24] Speaker 5: At approximately six o'clock that morning, in a second floor
[5:27] Speaker 5: room of a downtown hotel, the body of an unidentified
[5:29] Speaker 5: woman was found murdered. Preliminary investigation failed to reveal the
[5:33] Speaker 5: true identity of the victim or the killer. As far
[5:35] Speaker 5: as physical evidence was concerned, there wasn't much to go on.
[5:39] Speaker 5: The deep bruises on her neck and throat, along with
[5:41] Speaker 5: a crushed vertebrae at the base of her skull, indicated
[5:43] Speaker 5: a savage attack one five PM. Through the label on
[5:48] Speaker 5: the dead woman's coat, we traced the garment to a
[5:49] Speaker 5: department store where it had been purchased, but they had
[5:52] Speaker 5: no record on it. It was a cash purchase and
[5:54] Speaker 5: the salesgirl couldn't remember the customer. Investigation during the next
[5:57] Speaker 5: two days failed to turn up any leads. We showed
[6:00] Speaker 5: a more picture of the victim to bartenders, waitresses, parking
[6:03] Speaker 5: a lot of tendants.
[6:04] Speaker 6: In the vicinity of the hotel. They couldn't identify her.
[6:07] Speaker 5: We rechecked tenants and employees at the hotel that got
[6:10] Speaker 5: us nothing. Thursday, five forty eight pm.
[6:15] Speaker 7: One answer at your lafe to find Yeah, victim was
[6:17] Speaker 7: a nice looking woman, well dressed, nice clothes. How comes
[6:20] Speaker 7: she's staying in a cheap hotel down the neighborhood like that?
[6:23] Speaker 7: It doesn't jibe from my mind? Were that's sorry to say? Sure,
[6:26] Speaker 7: got me stop two days leg work and we're no play.
[6:29] Speaker 5: We might be in better shape when we get that
[6:31] Speaker 5: kickback from Washington. That's you're a hope, So go ahead.
[6:40] Speaker 6: They excuse me, Yes, sir, can we help you?
[6:46] Speaker 11: Well, no, I don't know. I guess it all depends.
[6:49] Speaker 11: I'm waiting for a couple of detectives here.
[6:51] Speaker 7: Well, who is it?
[6:51] Speaker 11: You wanted to see a couple of detectives.
[6:53] Speaker 7: Who are they?
[6:55] Speaker 11: It's pretty confidential, you know, I have to talk to them.
[6:59] Speaker 11: Told me to see Friday and Romero. Ben Friday and
[7:02] Speaker 11: Joe Romero detectives handling the case.
[7:05] Speaker 5: Yes, sir, I'm Joe Friday. This is my partner, Ben Romero.
[7:08] Speaker 5: So we're handling the case. What do you want to
[7:09] Speaker 5: see us about?
[7:10] Speaker 11: They said you were working on that murder case, that
[7:13] Speaker 11: woman they found in the hotel. Yes, sir, that's right,
[7:16] Speaker 11: that's so you see your badges. Yes, sir, here's our identification.
[7:22] Speaker 11: Mm hmmm. Read about that murder in the paper.
[7:25] Speaker 6: You know.
[7:27] Speaker 11: You better come over here. Yeah, you're going to thank
[7:32] Speaker 11: me for this. I got all you want to know
[7:34] Speaker 11: about that murder.
[7:35] Speaker 7: You mind telling us your name, sir?
[7:37] Speaker 11: I don't mind. L. P. Morgan was a good friend
[7:41] Speaker 11: of hers. You know he used to work with him.
[7:43] Speaker 6: You mean the dead woman, it's.
[7:44] Speaker 11: The same one. I never forget a face. Maud McLeod
[7:48] Speaker 11: saw that picture in the paper and I said to myself,
[7:51] Speaker 11: there's old Maud.
[7:52] Speaker 6: You're pretty sure that, are you? Mister Morden?
[7:54] Speaker 11: Sure, I'm sure. I'm Maud McLeod used to work together
[7:56] Speaker 11: in the circus. Maud was a bareback girl, you know,
[7:59] Speaker 11: investment Andre, a real trooper.
[8:01] Speaker 7: What makes you so sure it's the same oman, mister Morgan?
[8:04] Speaker 7: When was the last time you saw this friend of yours?
[8:06] Speaker 7: This Martin mccloth well. I used to see her all
[8:08] Speaker 7: the time work the old sales photo together. Got a
[8:12] Speaker 7: photo of her. Do you mind if we take a
[8:13] Speaker 7: look at it.
[8:14] Speaker 11: That's why I came down here. I want to help out.
[8:16] Speaker 11: You's got to be identified. Let's see got here's somewhere
[8:22] Speaker 11: so more in a circus custome. Yeah, here it just
[8:26] Speaker 11: take a look at that. It's mord ain't it.
[8:28] Speaker 7: Mmm, well, I don't know, sir. It doesn't seem to
[8:31] Speaker 7: be too much resemblance.
[8:32] Speaker 11: Here is that right?
[8:34] Speaker 7: Grad, you've made a mistake, mister Morgan. Thanks for your
[8:36] Speaker 7: cooperation anyhow. I appreciate you coming in.
[8:39] Speaker 11: Sure it was Maud, I got it.
[8:44] Speaker 6: Homicide Friday. Oh yeah, Frank, Uh huh is that right?
[8:48] Speaker 6: What to say?
[8:50] Speaker 5: Huh yeah, okay, fine, no, we'll pick it out. Yeah, thanks,
[8:54] Speaker 5: anythink communications they got the kickback from Washington on the
[8:57] Speaker 5: dead woman's fingerprints and you left. They got to identify
[9:00] Speaker 5: she worked at an aircraft plant during the war. Names
[9:02] Speaker 5: Doris Fraser.
[9:05] Speaker 11: I can't help it to think you fellows are missing
[9:07] Speaker 11: at BET. I knew that dead woman.
[9:08] Speaker 5: Well, she's already been identified, mister Morgan. We know who
[9:11] Speaker 5: she is, names Doris Fraser.
[9:13] Speaker 6: That's so, yes, sir, that's right.
[9:14] Speaker 11: Oh what do you think of that?
[9:16] Speaker 2: Oh, Maud?
[9:16] Speaker 11: She went and changed her name.
[9:23] Speaker 5: Thursday, six thirty five pm, Ben and I went down
[9:26] Speaker 5: the hall to Communications and got a copy of the
[9:28] Speaker 5: kickback from Washington. The murder victim was identified as Doris
[9:31] Speaker 5: Eileen Fraser. She applied for a position as a typist
[9:34] Speaker 5: at the Eagle Aircraft Plant in Burbank in nineteen forty two.
[9:38] Speaker 5: Next morning, we checked the personnel office at the plant.
[9:40] Speaker 5: We found that Doris Fraser had been employed as a
[9:42] Speaker 5: typist from nineteen forty two to nineteen forty four, and
[9:45] Speaker 5: going over our application, we found our last known address
[9:48] Speaker 5: listed as seventy three forty six Oakdale Avenue. Her application
[9:52] Speaker 5: stated she was single, with no previous employment, with no
[9:56] Speaker 5: known relatives, we could uncover no further information on the girl.
[10:00] Speaker 5: We drove across town to the Oakdale Avenue address, a
[10:02] Speaker 5: large apartment building in a better than average neighborhood. The
[10:05] Speaker 5: manager told us that Doris Fraser had lived there up
[10:07] Speaker 5: to eight months before. He said that a few weeks
[10:10] Speaker 5: before she moved, she was married to a tall, dark
[10:12] Speaker 5: haired man, but he was unable to remember his name.
[10:15] Speaker 5: The manager also told us that the newly married couple
[10:18] Speaker 5: apparently began having trouble from the day that they were married.
[10:21] Speaker 5: We checked the next forwarding address, a boarding house for
[10:24] Speaker 5: women in the south end of the city. Ben and
[10:26] Speaker 5: I interviewed the woman in charge of missus, Francis Watson.
[10:29] Speaker 5: We talked to her back in the kitchen of the
[10:30] Speaker 5: boarding house while she polished to set a silverware.
[10:34] Speaker 12: I saw that picture in the paper. I didn't connect
[10:36] Speaker 12: it with Doris, though. She was a much prettier girl
[10:38] Speaker 12: when she lived here.
[10:39] Speaker 7: You say she left here about eighteen months agoms watching.
[10:42] Speaker 12: Yes, maybe a little more. It might be closer to
[10:44] Speaker 12: two years. I'd have to check my rent receipts to
[10:46] Speaker 12: be sure.
[10:46] Speaker 7: Did you happen to know anything about the Fraser girl
[10:48] Speaker 7: is watching? I mean, did you know much about her
[10:50] Speaker 7: personal life?
[10:51] Speaker 11: Of all?
[10:51] Speaker 12: Well, of course I always insist on references any good
[10:54] Speaker 12: boarding house. Does you know Doris was a nice girl
[10:57] Speaker 12: in many ways? Of course, she had her shortcomings. I
[11:00] Speaker 12: suppose we all do. When she first came here, she
[11:02] Speaker 12: seemed like such a nice girl, and then she started
[11:05] Speaker 12: to go downhill. I just don't know what got into her.
[11:07] Speaker 6: Well, what do you mean, man, Was she in some
[11:09] Speaker 6: kind of trouble?
[11:09] Speaker 12: Well, of course when she first came here we didn't
[11:12] Speaker 12: know it, but she was married. This is a home
[11:14] Speaker 12: for single girls. We have our rules and regulations, just
[11:17] Speaker 12: like any other respectable place. This man we understand well,
[11:20] Speaker 12: as we came to find out later, Doris wasn't only married,
[11:23] Speaker 12: but she was fighting with her husband. I understand he
[11:26] Speaker 12: wasn't much at all. She was thinking of getting a divorce.
[11:28] Speaker 6: As a matter of fact, Will did you ever meet
[11:29] Speaker 6: her husband, miss Watson?
[11:30] Speaker 8: No?
[11:31] Speaker 12: I never did. I suppose It's just as well. I
[11:33] Speaker 12: didn't understand that Doris left him after they'd been married
[11:35] Speaker 12: only a few months.
[11:36] Speaker 7: M you know what his name is, ma'am.
[11:39] Speaker 12: No, I have no idea. Doris always used her maiden
[11:41] Speaker 12: name when she was with me.
[11:42] Speaker 7: Then you never saw this man as what? And he
[11:44] Speaker 7: never came to housh here?
[11:45] Speaker 12: No, I didn't say I never saw him. I said
[11:47] Speaker 12: I didn't meet him. Yes, there was once when he
[11:50] Speaker 12: came to the house to see Doris.
[11:51] Speaker 7: What was the occasion you mind telling us by? Oh?
[11:54] Speaker 12: It was most unpleasant. I can tell you that, not me,
[11:57] Speaker 12: see now, Yes, Doris, I've been here about six months.
[12:02] Speaker 12: By that time I was beginning to see the real
[12:03] Speaker 12: side of the girl. No character, Sergeant, no character at all.
[12:06] Speaker 12: It shows up every time.
[12:08] Speaker 6: Yes, ma'am, what if you'd go on please?
[12:10] Speaker 12: Well, as I was saying, it was after about six
[12:13] Speaker 12: months when this man brought Doris home late one night,
[12:15] Speaker 12: about a quarter till midnight, I'd say, upset the whole house.
[12:19] Speaker 7: How was that man?
[12:20] Speaker 12: The two of them, this man and Doris, they stood
[12:23] Speaker 12: right out there in the hall, had a terrible quarrel language.
[12:27] Speaker 12: It was dreadful the top of their lungs too. My
[12:30] Speaker 12: husband went out to quiet them down, but the man
[12:32] Speaker 12: left before he had a chance to call him down.
[12:34] Speaker 12: The upset the whole house.
[12:36] Speaker 5: Now, this man, the Fraser woman was arguing with You're
[12:38] Speaker 5: sure that that was her husband?
[12:39] Speaker 12: Well as sure as I can be. That's what Doris
[12:42] Speaker 12: told me. Anyway, the day after, I called her in
[12:44] Speaker 12: and told her I just couldn't tolerate behavior like that.
[12:48] Speaker 12: It upset her quite a bit. I remember she cried
[12:50] Speaker 12: so it wouldn't happen again. That's when she told me
[12:52] Speaker 12: she was trying to get a divorce.
[12:54] Speaker 6: Is that what the big argument was about? Would you
[12:56] Speaker 6: know that?
[12:56] Speaker 12: Yes, she said she wanted a divorce. Her husband didn't.
[12:59] Speaker 12: He wanted her back with him. Certainly, is sad the
[13:02] Speaker 12: way some people mix up their lives.
[13:03] Speaker 7: Yes, ma'am. By any chances you get a good look
[13:06] Speaker 7: at this man husband, nummy.
[13:08] Speaker 12: Well, he was tall and had dark hair. That's about
[13:10] Speaker 12: all I remember. He was well dressed too.
[13:12] Speaker 7: I see when Doris Fraser left your missus watching, did
[13:16] Speaker 7: she leave her forward and addressed with you? No, she didn't.
[13:18] Speaker 12: I haven't any idea where she moved.
[13:20] Speaker 6: What kind of work was she doing while she was
[13:22] Speaker 6: living here? Do you have any idea where she was employed?
[13:24] Speaker 12: Yes, that was one of the references she gave me.
[13:26] Speaker 12: Furniture company down on Venice Boulevard, If I remember correctly,
[13:29] Speaker 12: I have the address my record book. Certainly is unfortunate.
[13:33] Speaker 6: The whole thing, Yes, ma'am, it is.
[13:35] Speaker 12: He even tried to talk to her before she left,
[13:38] Speaker 12: sat her down and talked to her for a whole afternoon.
[13:41] Speaker 12: I guess it was just a waste of time.
[13:42] Speaker 7: How's that man in.
[13:43] Speaker 12: Trouble with her husband? Terrible thing. He seemed to treat
[13:47] Speaker 12: her so badly to have been fighting all the time.
[13:50] Speaker 12: I believe she was actually afraid of him. She told
[13:53] Speaker 12: me it was very jealous. He drank ran around. That's
[13:55] Speaker 12: why I couldn't understand it.
[13:57] Speaker 6: You couldn't understand what, ma'am Doris.
[14:00] Speaker 12: When she moved away from here, ma'am, she said she
[14:02] Speaker 12: was going back with her husband.
[14:08] Speaker 5: The landlady, Francis Watson, gave us the address of the
[14:10] Speaker 5: furniture store where the murder victim had been employed, and
[14:13] Speaker 5: we drove down to check with a personnel manager of
[14:15] Speaker 5: mister Collins. He said that Doris Fraser had been fired
[14:18] Speaker 5: from her job ten months before. He said she'd been
[14:20] Speaker 5: let go because she was constantly late for work and
[14:22] Speaker 5: that she got into the habit of asking for salary
[14:24] Speaker 5: advances too often. Collins also told us that he'd heard
[14:27] Speaker 5: about the trouble between the Fraser woman and her husband.
[14:30] Speaker 5: He said he'd seen the husband in the store several
[14:32] Speaker 5: times when he came to call for his wife. He
[14:35] Speaker 5: identified the husband as Steve and Arnold. The description was
[14:38] Speaker 5: approximately the same, a tall, well dressed man, dark hair,
[14:41] Speaker 5: heavy build. The personnel manager gave us the last known address.
[14:44] Speaker 6: They had on the victim.
[14:45] Speaker 5: The following morning, we checked it out, an apartment hotel
[14:48] Speaker 5: in the East Wiltshire area. She was still registered there
[14:51] Speaker 5: together with her husband, Steve and Arnold, but the desk
[14:53] Speaker 5: clerk told us that Arnold hadn't been living there for
[14:55] Speaker 5: the past three months. He had no idea where Arnold
[14:58] Speaker 5: had moved he didn't know where he worked. While a
[15:00] Speaker 5: desk clerk stood by, Ben and I went upstairs and
[15:02] Speaker 5: checked the apartment.
[15:04] Speaker 6: Anything Joe, No, nothing.
[15:06] Speaker 7: Nothing in the bedroom, like Lee says, she goes in
[15:09] Speaker 7: for nice clothes. About all I can figure what you
[15:12] Speaker 7: got there?
[15:13] Speaker 6: See it lying on the desk here, looks like she
[15:15] Speaker 6: started to let her and didn't get to finish it.
[15:17] Speaker 7: What's it say there?
[15:18] Speaker 5: It's date of October twenty third. That's over a week ago,
[15:22] Speaker 5: says dear George. I've been meaning to write to you before,
[15:25] Speaker 5: but that's all.
[15:26] Speaker 6: That's as far as she got.
[15:28] Speaker 7: George. First time we've run into that name on this
[15:31] Speaker 7: deal makes more than one man in her life.
[15:33] Speaker 5: He There's a couple more letters here. They're all addressed
[15:35] Speaker 5: to her, unopen. See well we can go buy her.
[15:38] Speaker 5: The return addresses telephone bill, ad from a woman's store, postcard,
[15:44] Speaker 5: another ad. Here's something Santa Monica, postmar Check the name
[15:49] Speaker 5: on that return, yeah, Steve and Arnold. Twelve thirty five pm.
[15:57] Speaker 5: We called the office and check Steven Arnold through R
[15:59] Speaker 5: and I. He had no criminal record. The return address,
[16:02] Speaker 5: which he'd listed on the envelope of a letter to
[16:04] Speaker 5: his wife, was one o eight to six specific Front Boulevard.
[16:07] Speaker 5: We located it on the beach, just below Santa Monica
[16:10] Speaker 5: was a small Hamburger stand owned and operated by the
[16:12] Speaker 5: dead woman's husband.
[16:15] Speaker 8: No, I haven't seen Doris for a couple of months anyway.
[16:17] Speaker 7: Why, I understand you had an apartment with your wife
[16:20] Speaker 7: in the East Wilson neighborhood. Is that right, McDonald?
[16:23] Speaker 8: Yeah, that's right.
[16:23] Speaker 7: Mind telling us why you left?
[16:25] Speaker 8: No, I don't mind. I want to move closer to
[16:27] Speaker 8: my work, that's all. That place is way too far out.
[16:30] Speaker 6: Well, how is your wife didn't move with you? Sir?
[16:32] Speaker 8: She want to stay close to town. Doesn't care for
[16:34] Speaker 8: the beach much bad for his sinus?
[16:36] Speaker 5: I guess, well, did you have an argument with your
[16:38] Speaker 5: wife inold some kind of a disagreement? Is that one
[16:40] Speaker 5: of the reasons you moved?
[16:41] Speaker 8: Yeah, you might call it that. We're getting a divorce.
[16:43] Speaker 2: That's so.
[16:44] Speaker 8: Yeah, it was the best thing all the way around.
[16:46] Speaker 8: There's nothing of fighting and scrapping the last year. Anyway,
[16:49] Speaker 8: we decided to call it quits. You excuse me a minute.
[16:52] Speaker 8: I gotta put some cold drinks. It's cooler.
[16:53] Speaker 6: Yeah, I got right ahead.
[16:58] Speaker 8: Would you do you care for cold drink, no coke,
[17:00] Speaker 8: maybe nothing.
[17:06] Speaker 6: Did you get the divorce from your wife, mister Arnold.
[17:08] Speaker 8: Yeah, that's right, I'm divorcing her. Why do you want
[17:11] Speaker 8: to know?
[17:12] Speaker 6: You remember that last time you saw your wife? The
[17:14] Speaker 6: exact date?
[17:15] Speaker 8: I mean, oh, I don't think I remember that. Been
[17:18] Speaker 8: at least three months, I'll say that much.
[17:19] Speaker 7: You spend most of your time down here at the beach,
[17:21] Speaker 7: do you, miss Darner?
[17:22] Speaker 8: Yeah, that's right. I get into town once or twice
[17:25] Speaker 8: a month. They sure you were like a coke. They
[17:28] Speaker 8: gonna have one myself if you don't mind. Sure I
[17:32] Speaker 8: got cold, Well, it sure as cold.
[17:36] Speaker 7: How about last Tuesday night? So you happened to be
[17:38] Speaker 7: in town that night?
[17:39] Speaker 12: Oh?
[17:40] Speaker 8: Last time was two three weeks ago? Anyway, went in
[17:42] Speaker 8: to see a show. I was working here last Tuesday night.
[17:47] Speaker 8: Work every night except Monday. It's only night I'm closed
[17:50] Speaker 8: up for her.
[17:50] Speaker 6: Is there anyone who can votch for that?
[17:52] Speaker 8: I don't think I get this. Why do you want
[17:54] Speaker 8: to know?
[17:54] Speaker 6: Well, is there anybody who can votch for you?
[17:56] Speaker 8: Well? Sure, half a dozen people. Anyway, A fellow runs
[17:59] Speaker 8: a place next door. The guys in the rest of
[18:01] Speaker 8: the stalls up and down the way. Here they can
[18:03] Speaker 8: all vouch for me. I worked till one am, same
[18:05] Speaker 8: as usual. Just a minute, hey, beg.
[18:10] Speaker 5: Go Steve hop over here for a minute, so I
[18:13] Speaker 5: don't want to talk to you about Yeah, just a minute, hey,
[18:15] Speaker 5: big thank.
[18:17] Speaker 8: He'll be right over you. Fellows want a cup of
[18:20] Speaker 8: coffee or anything?
[18:21] Speaker 7: No, I would. I'd like to have a change for
[18:22] Speaker 7: that cigarette, mes, you know, if you don't mind.
[18:24] Speaker 8: Oh, sure.
[18:30] Speaker 7: There you are, think yes, Steve.
[18:34] Speaker 8: Hey, uh, these fellows have detective vict guess about some
[18:37] Speaker 8: kind of jam my wife, got it? Do they want
[18:39] Speaker 8: to know where I was last Tuesday night?
[18:41] Speaker 4: Yeah?
[18:41] Speaker 8: They want somebody to vouch for him.
[18:43] Speaker 6: Sure, did you see mister Arnold last Tuesday night?
[18:46] Speaker 7: I was working next door.
[18:47] Speaker 13: Steve was here all night.
[18:59] Speaker 4: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
[19:02] Speaker 4: force in action.
[19:12] Speaker 5: Saturday October thirty, first two pm, Ben and I checked
[19:15] Speaker 5: with a dozen different concession operators in the neighborhood of
[19:17] Speaker 5: Steven Arnold's eating place.
[19:19] Speaker 6: They all corroborated the fact.
[19:20] Speaker 5: That on the night his wife had met her death
[19:22] Speaker 5: in a downtown hotel, Arnold had been working at his
[19:25] Speaker 5: stand until one am. Despite all the previous indications that
[19:28] Speaker 5: he might have been responsible for the murder of his wife,
[19:30] Speaker 5: we had to eliminate him as a possible suspect. Two
[19:33] Speaker 5: twenty pm, on the way back into town, we stopped
[19:36] Speaker 5: by the apartment hotel where Doris Fraser was living at
[19:38] Speaker 5: the time of her murder. After checking further with the
[19:41] Speaker 5: tenants and with the help in the building, we found
[19:43] Speaker 5: out that the victim had been in the habit of
[19:45] Speaker 5: eating most of her meals at restaurants in the immediate neighborhood.
[19:48] Speaker 5: After some two hours of checking and running into six restaurants,
[19:51] Speaker 5: we found a small coffee shop four blocks from the
[19:54] Speaker 5: apartment building, where one of the waitresses identified Doris Fraser's picture.
[19:58] Speaker 14: Yeah, that's her offic terrible picture though she looks so
[20:01] Speaker 14: much older.
[20:02] Speaker 7: About how often would you say miss Fraser.
[20:03] Speaker 14: Came in here, man, Well, three or four times a week.
[20:05] Speaker 14: I'd say the bus stops right out there on the corner.
[20:08] Speaker 14: She'd usually have breakfast, then grab the bus and go
[20:10] Speaker 14: to work. Some nights, coming home from work, she'd stopping
[20:13] Speaker 14: here for dinner.
[20:13] Speaker 6: Nice girl.
[20:14] Speaker 11: Quiet.
[20:15] Speaker 6: Did you get to know her at all? Miss? I mean,
[20:16] Speaker 6: did you happen to know any of her? Friends here
[20:18] Speaker 6: in the neighborhood.
[20:18] Speaker 14: No, As I say, she was a quiet person, not
[20:20] Speaker 14: very talkative, usually read while she was eating, book or magazine.
[20:23] Speaker 6: Uh huh. Did she ever come in here with anyone else?
[20:25] Speaker 11: Do you know that?
[20:26] Speaker 12: Yeah? Quite a few times.
[20:27] Speaker 14: You seemed to have a boyfriend chause she was attractive, small.
[20:30] Speaker 12: You know, but real cute looking.
[20:31] Speaker 7: M Do you happen to know any of these men?
[20:33] Speaker 14: No, I'm sorry, I don't.
[20:35] Speaker 7: Anyone of them in particular. She came in with very often.
[20:37] Speaker 14: Let's see, I think there was one blonde, good dresser,
[20:41] Speaker 14: kind of tall, good looking. They usually came in together
[20:43] Speaker 14: for breakfast.
[20:44] Speaker 6: How long ago was this miss you recall?
[20:45] Speaker 14: Oh, say, up until a couple of weeks ago. I
[20:48] Speaker 14: usually waited on him in the morning.
[20:49] Speaker 12: That's how I happened to remember.
[20:50] Speaker 6: I see. Did you ever happen to hear this man's name?
[20:52] Speaker 14: Let me see George?
[20:54] Speaker 12: I think that was it.
[20:55] Speaker 15: Yeah.
[20:55] Speaker 6: Would you happen to know if he lives in the neighborhood?
[20:57] Speaker 12: No, sorry, I don't.
[20:58] Speaker 7: Has this man been in here in the past week?
[21:00] Speaker 6: You know?
[21:01] Speaker 12: Yes he has. He came in for breakfast.
[21:02] Speaker 6: What day was that?
[21:03] Speaker 11: This morning?
[21:06] Speaker 6: Before we left the coffee shop.
[21:08] Speaker 5: We questioned the cashier, who came up with the information
[21:10] Speaker 5: that the man known as George usually left his car
[21:13] Speaker 5: parked at the service station across the street. We left
[21:16] Speaker 5: our card and asked the cashier to call us in
[21:18] Speaker 5: case the suspect returned. At the service station, they also
[21:21] Speaker 5: remembered the man known as George, but they told us
[21:23] Speaker 5: he hadn't been in for the past month. They'd done
[21:26] Speaker 5: some work in his car for him in the past,
[21:28] Speaker 5: so they had a record of his license number. We
[21:30] Speaker 5: called our DMV and found that the car was registered
[21:33] Speaker 5: to a car Lucy in East Hollywood four forty five pm.
[21:37] Speaker 5: We drove out and interviewed Lucy at his home, but
[21:39] Speaker 5: he came nowhere near the description of the suspect. He
[21:42] Speaker 5: told us that he had purchased the car six weeks
[21:44] Speaker 5: before from a man known as George Crane. He described
[21:47] Speaker 5: Crane as tall, blonde, and well dressed. From the bill
[21:51] Speaker 5: of sale. We got Crane's address, a motel on East Manchester.
[21:54] Speaker 5: The manager there told us that George Crane had moved
[21:57] Speaker 5: a week before. He said that Crane had left no
[21:59] Speaker 5: forwarding address, but he did remember where he worked. He
[22:02] Speaker 5: was a driller in one of the oil fields down
[22:04] Speaker 5: in Long Beach. We checked the oil company's personnel office downtown,
[22:07] Speaker 5: but they were closed for the day six eighteen pm.
[22:10] Speaker 5: We went back to the office and pulled the package
[22:12] Speaker 5: on George Crane from R and.
[22:13] Speaker 7: I get anything on him.
[22:15] Speaker 6: He's got our record. Here's the package here.
[22:18] Speaker 5: Yeah, nothing, very heavy drunk charge two years ago, another
[22:21] Speaker 5: one last year, disorderly combat resisting arrest.
[22:24] Speaker 7: That's about all I'm seeing. Yeah, description checks out all
[22:28] Speaker 7: the way.
[22:28] Speaker 6: You called the night officer of that oil company digit.
[22:30] Speaker 7: Yeah, they couldn't tell us anything, said call back first
[22:32] Speaker 7: thing in the morning. I want to Rachel, I got it.
[22:34] Speaker 6: Yeah, onmic side Friday.
[22:38] Speaker 5: Who how's that? Oh yeah, sure, yes sir, No it's
[22:46] Speaker 5: around Friday. Not yeah, thanks anyway, you beat yeah, yah goobye.
[22:51] Speaker 6: A alad does it? Who was that guy who was
[22:54] Speaker 6: any of the other day? You remember that Alfred P.
[22:56] Speaker 6: Morgan or whatever it was?
[22:58] Speaker 7: Oh one knee want wanted to buy a drink.
[23:00] Speaker 6: He's celebrating. Huh his old friend Maud. He just found her.
[23:03] Speaker 6: Eight am.
[23:09] Speaker 5: The next morning, we checked with the personnel department of
[23:11] Speaker 5: the oil company's downtown offices. They told us that George
[23:13] Speaker 5: Crane was employed as a driller, that he'd been working
[23:16] Speaker 5: for the company for the past five years, and that
[23:18] Speaker 5: he had a good employment record. They told us he
[23:20] Speaker 5: was on the day shift and that he was scheduled
[23:22] Speaker 5: to report for work on Rigs six nineteen at the
[23:24] Speaker 5: Long Beach Field. At eight o'clock that morning, Ben and
[23:27] Speaker 5: I got in the car drove down a Long Beach
[23:29] Speaker 5: where we located the murder suspect, George Crane at work
[23:31] Speaker 5: in the field.
[23:33] Speaker 15: Doris Frasier, I'm sorry, sor, and I don't think I
[23:36] Speaker 15: know anybody about that name.
[23:37] Speaker 13: How about Doris Arnold?
[23:39] Speaker 7: Mister Crane?
[23:39] Speaker 13: Would you know anybody by that name? Arnold? No, No,
[23:42] Speaker 13: I'm afraid not. What's it all about. You own a car,
[23:45] Speaker 13: do you, sir?
[23:46] Speaker 8: Yeah?
[23:46] Speaker 13: That's it right over there, that dark sidan.
[23:48] Speaker 16: Yeah. Have you had it long?
[23:50] Speaker 8: Oh?
[23:50] Speaker 15: I've had it a couple of weeks. Last thing I
[23:52] Speaker 15: had was giving me a lot of trouble.
[23:54] Speaker 16: Did you trade it in?
[23:55] Speaker 11: No?
[23:55] Speaker 13: I sold it for a private party fell out in Hollywood.
[23:58] Speaker 13: You mind taking a look at this picture, mister Crane? Yeah, Ah,
[24:03] Speaker 13: doesn't look like anybody I know.
[24:05] Speaker 15: Why am I supposed to we think you should. Yes, sir,
[24:08] Speaker 15: I don't think I follow you.
[24:09] Speaker 17: Do you spend any time around the East Wiltster district Crane, Eastwelter?
[24:13] Speaker 15: You said, yeah, Oh, I've probably been over there a
[24:16] Speaker 15: couple of times.
[24:17] Speaker 13: Not lately though.
[24:18] Speaker 7: How about the coffee shop on the corner of Gramercy
[24:21] Speaker 7: and Meringo.
[24:22] Speaker 13: You ever been in there? Not that I remember?
[24:25] Speaker 11: No.
[24:25] Speaker 17: Well, a waitress in that coffee shop and the cashier too.
[24:28] Speaker 17: They say they've got a pretty regular customer. You put
[24:30] Speaker 17: your description exactly sure you've.
[24:33] Speaker 13: Never been in there? Well, I'm not positive. I wouldn't
[24:36] Speaker 13: swear I've never been in the place. What's the difference anyway?
[24:39] Speaker 16: Well, how about that service station across the street from
[24:41] Speaker 16: the coffee shop? You ever parked your car there?
[24:44] Speaker 6: They ever do any work on it for you?
[24:46] Speaker 16: Oh?
[24:46] Speaker 15: Say, I bet I know the place you're talking about. Yeah, yeah,
[24:50] Speaker 15: I've been there quite a few times.
[24:51] Speaker 13: It's a good station. They've done some good jobs in
[24:54] Speaker 13: the car for me. I remember it now.
[24:55] Speaker 16: Well, I guess you remember the coffee shop Crane, Yeah,
[25:00] Speaker 16: I think I do now, Right across the streets from
[25:03] Speaker 16: the station, I did. Yeah, that's right.
[25:06] Speaker 13: Well, what do you want to know about it.
[25:08] Speaker 17: When's the last time you were in there, Crane? Well,
[25:11] Speaker 17: tell you the truth. I couldn't be sure.
[25:12] Speaker 7: We talked to a waitress in there yesterday.
[25:15] Speaker 13: She said you were in that morning for breakfast.
[25:17] Speaker 7: Do you remember that?
[25:19] Speaker 15: She's way off the track on that when I could
[25:21] Speaker 15: tell you that I wasn't near the place yesterday morning.
[25:23] Speaker 16: Well, cashier remembers you too, She says you were in.
[25:27] Speaker 16: How about it, Crane?
[25:28] Speaker 13: What difference does it make? What's this thing all about?
[25:30] Speaker 8: Anyway?
[25:31] Speaker 16: I want to take another look at this picture.
[25:32] Speaker 13: Well, I told you once I don't know the woman.
[25:34] Speaker 13: I never saw her before in my life.
[25:35] Speaker 16: Why don't you give it some thought?
[25:37] Speaker 6: Huh?
[25:37] Speaker 16: I said, why don't you give it some thoughts?
[25:39] Speaker 5: You remembered East Wilshire, You remember the service station, You
[25:42] Speaker 5: finally remember the coffee shop.
[25:43] Speaker 16: Maybe you can remember her.
[25:44] Speaker 13: I tell you I don't know her. I never saw
[25:46] Speaker 13: in my Look. Let's go on the shed where we
[25:48] Speaker 13: can hear each other.
[25:49] Speaker 5: Huh.
[25:49] Speaker 8: All right, that's a little better.
[25:57] Speaker 12: Huh.
[25:58] Speaker 7: The waitress in the place says you were there quite
[26:00] Speaker 7: a few times with a woman. You usually came in
[26:02] Speaker 7: for breakfast. You stopped going there about two weeks ago.
[26:05] Speaker 2: I don't know her.
[26:07] Speaker 7: What's the matter? Clean? You figure you got something to hide.
[26:09] Speaker 13: I don't know what you're talking about. I don't know her.
[26:12] Speaker 13: What do you figures she got to do with me?
[26:13] Speaker 2: Anyway?
[26:14] Speaker 5: We checked her apartment, mister, we found a letter she
[26:16] Speaker 5: was writing to you. You're not ready to tell us?
[26:20] Speaker 18: What's the letter? That doesn't mean anything, can't prove anything
[26:22] Speaker 18: by the letter? What are you thinking anyway?
[26:26] Speaker 6: We think you're lying, Crane. We think you got a
[26:28] Speaker 6: reason for it.
[26:29] Speaker 18: What do you say doesn't prove anything?
[26:32] Speaker 13: Maybe I know her and that doesn't mean anything at all.
[26:34] Speaker 6: We think it does.
[26:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, we think you killed her.
[26:38] Speaker 18: That's the way it looks to you.
[26:39] Speaker 7: That's the way it looks.
[26:41] Speaker 13: I don't think you can prove it.
[26:42] Speaker 6: We're going to try now, how about it?
[26:46] Speaker 11: Well?
[26:47] Speaker 18: It going easier for me in five minutes.
[26:48] Speaker 6: That's not up to us.
[26:51] Speaker 18: I don't know why I did it. What am I
[26:53] Speaker 18: going to give for a reason. I don't know why
[26:55] Speaker 18: I killed him.
[26:55] Speaker 6: I wouldn't know.
[26:56] Speaker 18: Crane didn't really have any reason. That sounds funny, doesn't it?
[27:01] Speaker 18: No reason at all? I just killed her? Am I
[27:04] Speaker 18: going to tell him? If I don't have a reason.
[27:06] Speaker 18: How can I ask him to let me off easy?
[27:08] Speaker 18: How can I ask?
[27:09] Speaker 6: I don't know, but they'll have an answer.
[27:18] Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
[27:21] Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
[27:23] Speaker 4: On February eighth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
[27:27] Speaker 4: ninety two, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
[27:30] Speaker 4: In a moment the results of that trial, and.
[27:33] Speaker 2: Now here is our star, Jack Webb.
[27:35] Speaker 5: Thank you friends, all of us on Dragnet. Sincerely hope
[27:38] Speaker 5: that all of you enjoyed a happy Thanksgiving.
[27:49] Speaker 4: George Martin Crane was tried and convicted in Superior Court
[27:53] Speaker 4: of murder in the first degree. He is now serving
[27:55] Speaker 4: a life term in the state penitentiary. You have just
[28:07] Speaker 4: heard drag Met a series of authentic cases from official files.
[28:11] Speaker 4: Technical advice comes from the Office of Chief of Police,
[28:14] Speaker 4: wh Parker, Los Angeles Police Department.
[28:21] Speaker 2: Next, Counter Spy Fights, International Intrigue. Stay tuned to NBC.
[28:33] Speaker 1: Welcome Back. This episode is textbook drag Nat, but it
[28:40] Speaker 1: is very well realized way. Essentially, I hear them and
[28:46] Speaker 1: their investigative process as they followed lead after lead, beginning
[28:52] Speaker 1: with an unidentified woman strangled in a hotel room to
[28:59] Speaker 1: really get details about her and her life and at
[29:04] Speaker 1: last finding her killer. It was a laborious process, even
[29:09] Speaker 1: when they found the car and the license plate, No,
[29:14] Speaker 1: that didn't get them there. Dragnett often bills itself as
[29:19] Speaker 1: taking you step by step with the police on an
[29:24] Speaker 1: actual case from crime to punishment. But usually there's kind
[29:29] Speaker 1: of a middle of the investigation that really gets emphasized,
[29:36] Speaker 1: and we get enough to understand what's gone on before,
[29:41] Speaker 1: and then we're kind of put you know, several steps
[29:44] Speaker 1: into the investigation. But here, you know, it is just
[29:48] Speaker 1: step by step. Okay, this didn't work well, we learned this,
[29:51] Speaker 1: and now we do this. It's just a fascinating thing.
[29:55] Speaker 1: It should not work as well as it does. But
[29:58] Speaker 1: again it's just Webb's ability to make these details and
[30:05] Speaker 1: each element realistic and interesting that is such a hallmark
[30:12] Speaker 1: of Dragnet. And I also did like the little bit
[30:16] Speaker 1: of comedy relief they worked in with mister Morgan, which
[30:20] Speaker 1: I think just does help the pacing. So well, you've
[30:23] Speaker 1: got just like this little comedic break in the middle,
[30:27] Speaker 1: and then on we go got two of them, actually,
[30:30] Speaker 1: and I'm glad that at least he got good news
[30:34] Speaker 1: with his friend maud Well. Now we turn to listener
[30:37] Speaker 1: comments and feedback, and we start over on Patreon. We've
[30:42] Speaker 1: got quite a few comments regarding the big hit and
[30:45] Speaker 1: run killer. Jeff writes, the suspect Miller letting some guy
[30:49] Speaker 1: named Paul he seems to barely know, go off with
[30:52] Speaker 1: his bakery truck to supposedly move a television seems ridiculous
[30:56] Speaker 1: on the face of it. Also, if Miller left the
[30:59] Speaker 1: bakery for a few minutes to say goodbye to some
[31:01] Speaker 1: friends at a nearby hotel, why weren't those friends contacted
[31:05] Speaker 1: to back up that part of his alibi? Their questions.
[31:08] Speaker 1: I would say that you're right that it was ridiculous
[31:14] Speaker 1: on the face of it, and that's why he needed
[31:17] Speaker 1: to prove that he done it, because if the police
[31:22] Speaker 1: were able to find corroborating evidence, it's a you know,
[31:26] Speaker 1: ladies and gentlemen of the jury, my client just loaned
[31:29] Speaker 1: this truck. No, we don't know is his full name. No,
[31:34] Speaker 1: we don't have any prov he actually borrowed it. As
[31:37] Speaker 1: to the friends in the hotel, that's like I said,
[31:40] Speaker 1: that's another fair question. Now a lot of people can
[31:44] Speaker 1: use the friend thing kind of loosely, it could refer
[31:48] Speaker 1: to somebody he had meant a long time ago, ran
[31:54] Speaker 1: into again and they said, hey, before I leave town,
[31:58] Speaker 1: why don't you come by the hotel and say goodbye.
[32:01] Speaker 1: But he didn't have the information or could use it
[32:04] Speaker 1: to refer to people who were in town temporarily he
[32:09] Speaker 1: had met and befriended. You know, I mean, a guy
[32:13] Speaker 1: who loans his bakery shock to somebody is apt to
[32:19] Speaker 1: do these sort of things. So I can see him
[32:22] Speaker 1: having friends that he doesn't have their address for that
[32:28] Speaker 1: he met them at some point. Now you would think
[32:31] Speaker 1: that they could check with the hotel, but the desk
[32:36] Speaker 1: Clark may not have even seen him going up, So
[32:39] Speaker 1: I tend to assume that they looked into it, but
[32:42] Speaker 1: just could not find any corroboration for that detail of
[32:47] Speaker 1: his alibi. And then Kevin comments leave it to Sergeant
[32:51] Speaker 1: Friday to continually stomp on suspects, constitutional riots, no warrants
[32:57] Speaker 1: or lawyers ever present. The depth of this apppisode was
[33:00] Speaker 1: shockingly simple. All the information provided after one phone call
[33:05] Speaker 1: the ticket lady with eight minutes till she could take
[33:07] Speaker 1: a break and talk right inside to start questioning doctor,
[33:13] Speaker 1: I know you're doing brain surgery right now, but we'd
[33:16] Speaker 1: like to ask some questions. It's really important. Apparently no
[33:19] Speaker 1: writer ever asked does this sound real? Well, Kevin, believe me,
[33:24] Speaker 1: on Dragnet writers more than anywhere else asked does this
[33:29] Speaker 1: sound real? I think that there is a subtle distinction
[33:34] Speaker 1: between performing brain surgery and working as a movie theater
[33:41] Speaker 1: ticket taker. It's slightly less complex. And in this case,
[33:46] Speaker 1: there weren't really people who were coming by during this time,
[33:50] Speaker 1: which is believable because there are times where it's really
[33:55] Speaker 1: kind of slow. Plus, let's just be honest here, that
[34:00] Speaker 1: you're sitting in your ticket window and you see this
[34:04] Speaker 1: car come right in front of your eyes and run
[34:08] Speaker 1: down this elderly woman and her grandson's that's something that
[34:16] Speaker 1: is very upsetting, maybe even traumatic, depending on how you
[34:22] Speaker 1: define that, And she probably just wanted to talk about it.
[34:27] Speaker 1: I think the most unrealistic thing to say is let
[34:31] Speaker 1: me go ahead and just sit here and twiddle my
[34:35] Speaker 1: thumbs waiting for somebody to want to buy a ticket.
[34:38] Speaker 1: You witnessed something like that, and you want to talk
[34:42] Speaker 1: about it, and you know, if you are minded, you
[34:46] Speaker 1: want to see the person who did that caught injustice. Done,
[34:50] Speaker 1: and I think that was her mode and I didn't
[34:53] Speaker 1: feel that was unrealistic at all. Doctor who done it
[34:57] Speaker 1: observes did not see that coming over on Instagram. Brain's
[35:02] Speaker 1: bitten rights. What a twisty story. Daniel Miller, the truck
[35:06] Speaker 1: slash Deli guy, may not have been the hit and
[35:09] Speaker 1: riding driver, but boy is he guilty of a lot
[35:12] Speaker 1: of bad judgment and decisions. Lends the company truck to
[35:15] Speaker 1: someone he doesn't know the name of, and leaves his
[35:19] Speaker 1: part time job to say goodbye to some other friends,
[35:22] Speaker 1: and changes his story constantly. I guess he was lucky
[35:26] Speaker 1: the real guilty party fest up. I don't know if
[35:30] Speaker 1: i'd say the guy fest up as much was called out,
[35:35] Speaker 1: but yeah, I think that the incredible thing about Dragnet
[35:39] Speaker 1: is that you are dealing with true life stories. There
[35:44] Speaker 1: is every reason to disbelieve him, but it is one
[35:47] Speaker 1: of the greatest twists in the whole history of this
[35:50] Speaker 1: program that as absurd as this man's story was, he
[35:55] Speaker 1: was telling the truth and of course a lot of
[35:59] Speaker 1: bad judgment. And you can speculate on that as well
[36:03] Speaker 1: because you add up his hours. The guys working around
[36:08] Speaker 1: seventy hours a week and that can leave you burnout
[36:11] Speaker 1: and lead to you making less than great decisions. Or
[36:15] Speaker 1: you can also be needing to do that because you've
[36:18] Speaker 1: made some less than great decisions. Either way, definitely guilty
[36:24] Speaker 1: of bad judgment, but thankfully for him, that's not a crime.
[36:29] Speaker 1: All right, Well, now it's time to thank our Patreon
