[3:33] Speaker 3: I'm not sure you like taking a walk, muggle when
[3:35] Speaker 3: you're gonna make a cause out of it. I haven't

[3:55] Speaker 2: eighteen Hotel, second floor rear, Wait a minute.
[3:57] Speaker 3: Mister, who are you? Who's making this report? Yung up?
[4:02] Speaker 2: Danny, Come on, mag The myster was obviously disguising his voice, Danny.
[4:05] Speaker 3: He wouldn't tell me who he was.
[4:06] Speaker 2: We got to that later ten after nine and a
[4:09] Speaker 2: May night. A man caused to tell you another man who's.
[4:11] Speaker 3: Been murdered for you. No walk for me, No peanutckle.
[4:28] Speaker 2: A bullet hole through the door, Danny forty five?
[4:31] Speaker 3: To do that?
[4:32] Speaker 2: Yeah, it could open it, mugamun. They were there, seated
[4:37] Speaker 2: in the middle of the floor. A woman was there,
[4:39] Speaker 2: and the man who held her his face gently, his
[4:41] Speaker 2: fingers trailing lightly through her hair, his voice not to you, Alice,
[4:46] Speaker 2: you're his voice, gently pleading against the safety held in
[4:49] Speaker 2: his eyes.
[4:50] Speaker 3: Or did your close so you can get a woman
[4:52] Speaker 3: he held in his arms. Alice me, no dead? Okay?
[5:01] Speaker 3: Oh you two? Who are you? Police? Police?
[5:09] Speaker 2: That gives you the right to walk in like this?
[5:11] Speaker 2: See me and Alice this way? Someone called in and
[5:15] Speaker 2: said her murder been committed. We figured that gave us
[5:18] Speaker 2: all the right we need. Someone called that's right. They
[5:20] Speaker 2: said a man was killed, or gave this address a man.
[5:24] Speaker 2: No man was killed here, not at this address. Only
[5:27] Speaker 2: my wife, only Alice her. You can let her go now,
[5:35] Speaker 2: he said, you could let her go. She's my wife.
[5:38] Speaker 3: This is Alice, my wife. She needs me now maybe
[5:40] Speaker 3: she did once. Now there's not a thing you can
[5:43] Speaker 3: do for her. No, no, there isn't. Is there.
[5:52] Speaker 2: Where were strangers in your town? You know that complete
[5:56] Speaker 2: strangers just beginning to get acquainted with people. What's your
[6:00] Speaker 2: wouldn't mean anything to you. Brad Mayo never made a
[6:04] Speaker 2: lot of name for myself or Alice either.
[6:07] Speaker 3: To tell us what happened, mister Mayol, sure.
[6:11] Speaker 2: Sure, go ahead, tell us she'd have to stay there
[6:16] Speaker 2: on the floor like that, kind of lift her up
[6:19] Speaker 2: and move her someplace where she would You were good
[6:21] Speaker 2: to tell us what happened, mister Mayo.
[6:23] Speaker 3: Sure.
[6:25] Speaker 2: We'd had our dinner. We were sitting around listening to
[6:28] Speaker 2: the radio, and what someone rang our bell? Alice went
[6:33] Speaker 2: to the door. Before she had a chance to open it,
[6:35] Speaker 2: there was a shot, and the wood in the door
[6:38] Speaker 2: kind of tore open, and I went to her.
[6:42] Speaker 3: All she could say to me was Ernie, Ernie, just
[6:47] Speaker 3: like that, over and over.
[6:49] Speaker 2: Ernie, your wife knows someone named Ernie. Mister Mayo, Yeah,
[6:53] Speaker 2: who is there?
[6:54] Speaker 3: Nae? Your kid? A friend who Ernie?
[6:56] Speaker 2: Britt Alice and I met at the Regency Friendship Club.
[7:01] Speaker 2: We were walking out of the park and Columbus Circle
[7:03] Speaker 2: one night when we first got here and there was
[7:06] Speaker 2: a sign. We went up because we didn't know many
[7:09] Speaker 2: people here then, and there was Ernie. He introduced himself
[7:14] Speaker 2: and he danced with Alice he danced real nice together.
[7:18] Speaker 2: After that they became good friends. Friends. I didn't say that.
[7:22] Speaker 2: I didn't say friends. Ernie's a guy. My wife and
[7:26] Speaker 2: I met that night, and she kept bumping into on
[7:29] Speaker 2: the street in the grocery store sometimes.
[7:32] Speaker 3: When she came home told me Ernie was sitting next
[7:34] Speaker 3: to her in the movie.
[7:35] Speaker 2: He bought her a candy bar. That doesn't make her
[7:37] Speaker 2: his friend. You know where this Ernie lives? No, why
[7:40] Speaker 2: should I care where it lives. All I know is
[7:42] Speaker 2: I met him at the club, and he danced with
[7:43] Speaker 2: Alice and followed her around.
[7:47] Speaker 3: And she's.
[7:50] Speaker 2: Said his name when she died, Bernie Britt, Bernie Britt. Yeah,
[7:56] Speaker 2: take over Maugumn and leave there, and to drive through
[8:04] Speaker 2: the night streets quiet at first, where its avenues are
[8:07] Speaker 2: lined with brownstone and stoops and families, silent and close,
[8:11] Speaker 2: touched by the may night of the city, and nearer
[8:14] Speaker 2: to Broadway, now the beginnings of crowd and the fast
[8:18] Speaker 2: walk and the colored shadows. Take a night and ride
[8:21] Speaker 2: it into the funnel of people and noise and riot.
[8:25] Speaker 2: The adventure now of driving up Broadway, ride the brake
[8:28] Speaker 2: and defer to jaywalkers, sightseers, and taxicabs a Columbus Circle park.
[8:35] Speaker 2: Get out and find a place and open a door.
[8:41] Speaker 2: Up a short flight of steps, walk through an open doorway.
[8:47] Speaker 3: There's a jukebox.
[8:49] Speaker 2: There were two card tables together, festooned with a pink
[8:51] Speaker 2: paper tablecloth and a cut glass punch bowl, and a
[8:54] Speaker 2: crape paper sign tacked to the wall above it Welcome stranger,
[8:58] Speaker 2: it said, you're our friends. And a dozen dancers with
[9:01] Speaker 2: their names printed on paper hearts tended their bosoms, and
[9:04] Speaker 2: the lady who seemed to be in charge of it all.
[9:06] Speaker 5: And the next dance will be a tag day. The
[9:11] Speaker 5: ladies who was asking couples and the men will tag
[9:13] Speaker 5: one off, then the lady who is left over, they
[9:17] Speaker 5: tag any man of that job. Uh well, will someone
[9:23] Speaker 5: please put the dime in the machine?
[9:32] Speaker 3: Good evening.
[9:33] Speaker 6: Oh you're new, I haven't seen you before.
[9:35] Speaker 2: You just go out there and tag away, and later.
[9:37] Speaker 3: I'll be I'm the police.
[9:38] Speaker 2: My name's Dandy Clover. That's quite all right, thank you,
[9:41] Speaker 2: And now I'm here on business.
[9:42] Speaker 6: He look, mister Clover, we've got the makings of a
[9:44] Speaker 6: fine party going here tonight.
[9:46] Speaker 3: The place is filling up, so they'll blouse it.
[9:48] Speaker 6: Just make your arrest whoever you're looking for, and a
[9:50] Speaker 6: gentlemanly man and get out.
[9:52] Speaker 3: I'm looking for a man named their name Bread.
[9:55] Speaker 2: Is it here?
[9:57] Speaker 7: Nope? Gone?
[9:58] Speaker 3: I mean he was here and he left it.
[10:00] Speaker 6: Yes, sir, Ernie hangs around here a lot.
[10:02] Speaker 3: You know, No, I don't. He likes to meet people.
[10:05] Speaker 3: He hangs around, thinks of games to play. You know
[10:09] Speaker 3: where'd he go? Well, he dropped in to tell me more.
[10:11] Speaker 6: I guess a couple of three hours ago. He wouldn't
[10:13] Speaker 6: be here tonight.
[10:14] Speaker 5: Said he had a big date at nine o'clock.
[10:16] Speaker 3: Surnamed Alice.
[10:17] Speaker 6: Nice name, four people named Alice come here.
[10:21] Speaker 3: Ernie must have liked this Alice all You know where
[10:24] Speaker 3: Ernie Brett lives.
[10:25] Speaker 6: No, I don't, but that Ernie must have liked this
[10:28] Speaker 6: Alice all right. Oh, indeed he called up applause while
[10:32] Speaker 6: he was here, all of the better roses that he'd
[10:34] Speaker 6: picked him up at eight thirty, and he made another call,
[10:37] Speaker 6: made an appointment where the barber down the street Oakley.
[10:39] Speaker 3: He's two bucks for a bob A.
[10:43] Speaker 2: Yeah, you're dead, thanks, lon have us said, I'll be
[11:03] Speaker 2: with you in a minute. As soon as I finished.
[11:05] Speaker 2: Mister Gosson's scout message. Oh the police badge does it?
[11:11] Speaker 3: Mister? How can I help?
[11:13] Speaker 2: You?
[11:13] Speaker 1: Know?
[11:13] Speaker 3: A man named Ernie Britt? Sure he was in a
[11:15] Speaker 3: while back, hair cut, shave, shine? Is that all I
[11:19] Speaker 3: have to do?
[11:19] Speaker 2: Oh?
[11:20] Speaker 3: I just want to make sure he was here? Oh
[11:21] Speaker 3: he was here, all right, they say where he was going.
[11:24] Speaker 2: Came in here with a big smile and told me
[11:26] Speaker 2: to make him look desirable for Alice, whoever she is.
[11:29] Speaker 2: Date he mentioned the time nine o'clock. That's right, he
[11:34] Speaker 2: was planning to do it up Brown. Guess this Alice
[11:37] Speaker 2: was something special?
[11:38] Speaker 3: What do you mean? Old flowers and all?
[11:41] Speaker 2: Called the floorists from here and said he wouldn't pick
[11:43] Speaker 2: up the bed of roses, send him to his place instead,
[11:46] Speaker 2: called the flooris he won the merit? No later than
[11:48] Speaker 2: a quarter after night? You know where Britt lives?
[11:50] Speaker 3: Sure?
[11:51] Speaker 2: Sure I went there a couple of times to bob
[11:53] Speaker 2: him on one hundred and twelfth Street, three twenty fourth floor.
[11:57] Speaker 2: Back at all, that's all. Sorry to keep you waiting,
[12:01] Speaker 2: mister Garson.
[12:02] Speaker 3: There where were your name? Ernie Britt?
[12:34] Speaker 2: Like master, it's midnight already. How come you're pushing the
[12:36] Speaker 2: door dolls at police and what about it? Am I
[12:40] Speaker 2: interrupting anything? I only asked because I just took a
[12:42] Speaker 2: fast look over your shoulder, Flowers Wine.
[12:45] Speaker 3: Yeah, he used to be a party here. It's over
[12:50] Speaker 3: what he wanted. Mister. You know a man named Fred Mayo?
[12:53] Speaker 3: What about him?
[12:54] Speaker 2: I got a phone call a few hours ago, an
[12:56] Speaker 2: anonymous collar gave me his room number, said we'd find
[12:59] Speaker 2: a dead man.
[13:00] Speaker 3: And I didn't kill him, like I know you didn't,
[13:04] Speaker 3: he says, So was that that part of it? He's
[13:07] Speaker 3: not dead?
[13:09] Speaker 2: Well, that's right, mister, Bretty's in fine shape, not a scratch,
[13:12] Speaker 2: just grieving that song.
[13:14] Speaker 3: What are you talking about?
[13:15] Speaker 2: At a little after nine o'clock tonight, his wife was murdered.
[13:19] Speaker 3: Alice Mayo is dead? What Alice dead? You're lying it
[13:28] Speaker 3: couldn't have happened. Liar, Liar, liar.
[13:40] Speaker 7: You are listening to Broadways My Beat, written by Morton
[13:43] Speaker 7: Fine and David Pinkin and starring Larry Thor as Detective
[13:47] Speaker 7: Danny Kober.
[13:49] Speaker 3: What can you do with two cents?
[13:51] Speaker 4: Not much? Don't you believe it?
[13:54] Speaker 7: Because for two cents a year, you, as an American taxpayer,
[13:58] Speaker 7: are helping to dissolve ignorant prejudice and intolerance throughout the world.
[14:03] Speaker 7: You are doing this through UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific,
[14:08] Speaker 7: and Cultural Organization. More than half of mankind one billion,
[14:13] Speaker 7: two hundred million men, women and children.
[14:16] Speaker 3: Can neither read nor write.
[14:18] Speaker 7: These are the people who are also poor, ill fed,
[14:21] Speaker 7: and have a life expectancy of under thirty years. And
[14:25] Speaker 7: it is toward these people that UNESCO is directing much
[14:28] Speaker 7: of its educational efforts, because everyone knows that ignorance is
[14:33] Speaker 7: not bliss. You are a part of the great work
[14:37] Speaker 7: being done by this United Nations agency, and it costs
[14:40] Speaker 7: you only two cents a year.
[14:54] Speaker 2: When the rumor gets around that summer is almost here,
[14:56] Speaker 2: Broadway is beside itself with glee. Somebody noticed the moonlight
[15:00] Speaker 2: of May, uses it as a backdrop to an early dream,
[15:04] Speaker 2: tells a girl about it, who tells a guy, and
[15:06] Speaker 2: the word gets round. It drifts across town, causes reactions,
[15:11] Speaker 2: closets open as to charge accounts.
[15:14] Speaker 3: And the cotton dress and the sports shirt.
[15:16] Speaker 2: And the sandal constitutes the current uniform. And the poodle
[15:19] Speaker 2: is clipped and slashed, the ankle is silken, the shoulder
[15:23] Speaker 2: is soft and starting to tan. Also the boy and
[15:27] Speaker 2: the crew cut who runs down the street screaming, I'm
[15:29] Speaker 2: in love. It's may It's the right time, except for
[15:38] Speaker 2: some people, those who had time had caught up with
[15:42] Speaker 2: conspired against to make the sum total of all the
[15:44] Speaker 2: minutes an instant of shunk. This man earning Bret in
[15:48] Speaker 2: this room, shaking his head against him.
[15:50] Speaker 3: I can't believe it. I just can't believe it.
[15:54] Speaker 2: Let's go inside, Joey, all right, all right, I made
[16:00] Speaker 2: up my mind to just stand here until you get
[16:02] Speaker 2: around of believing it, mister Britt, Now.
[16:03] Speaker 3: We can go on from there. What for did you
[16:07] Speaker 3: kill her? Crazy? I'll repraise it so you can understand
[16:11] Speaker 3: it better. Did you ring her doorbell?
[16:13] Speaker 2: Then when you heard someone at the door, did you
[16:15] Speaker 2: shoot through the door and kill her?
[16:17] Speaker 3: It's the way she was killed. You're a date with
[16:19] Speaker 3: her to night, and you how do you know?
[16:22] Speaker 2: You left word every place you were that you were
[16:24] Speaker 2: going to see a girl named Alice tonight at nine missus.
[16:26] Speaker 3: Mayo's name is Alice.
[16:28] Speaker 2: You met her at an introduction club, you followed her
[16:30] Speaker 2: around to night, You had a date with her right here. Yeah,
[16:33] Speaker 2: she didn't show, which means you have no alibi from
[16:36] Speaker 2: nine o'clock for were you did?
[16:37] Speaker 3: Then?
[16:38] Speaker 2: Right here?
[16:38] Speaker 3: But without missus Mayos, So you've got no way of
[16:40] Speaker 3: proving it. You knew she was married, didn't you? Married?
[16:44] Speaker 2: And a girl who knew her own nind. I never
[16:47] Speaker 2: forced myself on anybody. What about the man who called
[16:49] Speaker 2: me a few minutes after nine and told me a
[16:51] Speaker 2: man was murdered?
[16:52] Speaker 3: Riddle? How many guess he's doing again? Just one try
[16:57] Speaker 3: earninge Britt, I didn't call anybody. Why did you kill her? Ernie? Well?
[17:04] Speaker 3: Why did you kill her? You know something?
[17:09] Speaker 2: She isn't dead. Now I gotta think of what things, Missy? Everything?
[17:18] Speaker 2: Everything I don't know. Well, come on, Ernie, if you're
[17:26] Speaker 2: under arrest, take him downtown. Book him on suspicion of
[17:33] Speaker 2: the murder of Alice Mayle. Then walk down a card
[17:37] Speaker 2: that leads into two o'clock of a May night on
[17:39] Speaker 2: the threshold light of cigarette. Then adds into it the
[17:49] Speaker 2: two o'clock time. The squalls of miss the scarlet of
[17:52] Speaker 2: Neon bleeding into pavements went with nighttime. The river sounds,
[17:57] Speaker 2: the tremble of earth as a subway train pierces it.
[18:00] Speaker 2: The man sudden with loneliness who stops you, asks for
[18:03] Speaker 2: a small loan offers you the security of a name
[18:06] Speaker 2: written on the two o'clock missed.
[18:07] Speaker 3: Give it to him.
[18:09] Speaker 2: Maybe you'll mention your name where sleep is the next morning.
[18:19] Speaker 2: Go back to the man on whom you'd intruded once before.
[18:22] Speaker 2: While he held death.
[18:24] Speaker 3: Close and spoke softly to it, Go back to him.
[18:27] Speaker 3: When can I take her home?
[18:28] Speaker 2: Mister Kloher, I've made all the arrangements with the railroad people.
[18:31] Speaker 2: Now it's up to you people. When are you going
[18:32] Speaker 2: to let me take Alice home?
[18:34] Speaker 3: We'll let you know. Mister.
[18:35] Speaker 4: What do you people want with her?
[18:37] Speaker 3: He's dead, a bullet tore open.
[18:38] Speaker 7: What else do you want from her?
[18:39] Speaker 3: What good is she to you? Tell me? Get through,
[18:42] Speaker 3: mister mill Yeah, yeah, I'm through, like you will never know.
[18:50] Speaker 2: We need the report of the medical examiner, ballistics, laboratory technicians, police,
[18:54] Speaker 2: photograph or complicated, must be real complicated. The things you
[18:58] Speaker 2: have to do about my wife.
[19:00] Speaker 3: Wanded killer. Doing these things might help us find Okay,
[19:03] Speaker 3: I'll wait, I'll wait until you give me the word.
[19:06] Speaker 2: Tell me a little about yourself, mister mail. I got
[19:09] Speaker 2: a wife, it's newly dead.
[19:12] Speaker 3: That's about me. When I get back to Baltimore.
[19:15] Speaker 2: People are gonna stop me on the street to shake
[19:17] Speaker 2: my hand real hard, and they'll wipe a tear with
[19:22] Speaker 2: a piece of tissue, and then they'll throw it in
[19:23] Speaker 2: the street. That's about me, That's about Fred Mayl. Baltimore
[19:29] Speaker 2: was your home born.
[19:30] Speaker 3: I grew up there.
[19:31] Speaker 2: Alice lived in a fancier section Forest Park. But I
[19:35] Speaker 2: found a way to meet her, and I married her
[19:38] Speaker 2: in spite of the fancy competition.
[19:40] Speaker 3: When did you come to New York? When did? I
[19:43] Speaker 3: don't know, Maybe three months ago, maybe not, I don't
[19:46] Speaker 3: remember it. Yeah, three months and a week maybe? Why
[19:50] Speaker 3: did you come here? Are you rubbing it in? Mister Clover?
[19:53] Speaker 3: You're going to say to me if we never came, Alice,
[19:55] Speaker 3: it was simple questions, mister Mayl, Why did you come here?
[20:00] Speaker 2: I worked for it, transferred me to the New York
[20:02] Speaker 2: office Ruxton Enterprises Novelties.
[20:05] Speaker 3: Alice get all gay about it. A big deal in
[20:07] Speaker 3: New York. She told me. That's why we came, big deal.
[20:11] Speaker 3: It was hard to make friends. You went to that
[20:13] Speaker 3: social club. That's how gay it was.
[20:16] Speaker 2: Tag dances, crummy punch strangers with sweaty hands.
[20:19] Speaker 3: It brought Alice down.
[20:21] Speaker 2: So I sent her back to Baltimore for a couple
[20:23] Speaker 2: of days at her mother's house when over Mother's Day
[20:25] Speaker 2: weekend she would have a heart to heart with her mom.
[20:28] Speaker 2: Get it out of her system, come back, try it again.
[20:33] Speaker 2: I look, mister Klobe, you will give me the word
[20:35] Speaker 2: as soon as you can.
[20:36] Speaker 3: Huh, as soon as we can. You'll wait for it here.
[20:39] Speaker 3: Mister Mayl.
[20:56] Speaker 7: Baltimore came through with flying colors, Danny Baltimore, will you
[21:01] Speaker 7: join me?
[21:01] Speaker 3: Whatever you said? Do you know?
[21:03] Speaker 7: I say a slut and a flourish for the mondumental
[21:05] Speaker 7: city on the Chesapeake and for their police force, of life, stature,
[21:09] Speaker 7: and in the same geographical location. They have responded to
[21:12] Speaker 7: our desires post taste with what Gino with information and
[21:16] Speaker 7: meant the couple, Fred and Alice Mayo that they were
[21:19] Speaker 7: respected citizens lived a life without the blemish, not once
[21:22] Speaker 7: mentioned in the islands of the police blodder who names
[21:25] Speaker 7: the contuit.
[21:26] Speaker 3: Mister and missus Mayo until.
[21:28] Speaker 7: This, until what until this clipping from a Baltimore newspaper,
[21:32] Speaker 7: which was included, among the other.
[21:33] Speaker 3: Favors in Baltimore, a news.
[21:35] Speaker 7: Photograph of an unidentified guest rescuing Alice Mayo from a
[21:39] Speaker 7: blazing Baltimarian infernal. See it, they are looking at it, Danny,
[21:43] Speaker 7: And consider how heroes are born under minute by the minute.
[21:46] Speaker 3: Consider the bravery of.
[21:47] Speaker 7: A man who threw smoke and frames or something else.
[21:50] Speaker 7: Do you know the date May twelve, or Danny, I
[21:53] Speaker 7: hold it in fond memory. This day was Mother's Day,
[21:57] Speaker 7: a day on which I presented Missus t the mother
[21:59] Speaker 7: of my chick.
[22:00] Speaker 2: Consider another things more. The man carrying Missus Mayo.
[22:04] Speaker 7: I repeat, a hero, presumably her husband.
[22:07] Speaker 3: Yeah, hero, Well it's not her husband.
[22:09] Speaker 7: What, Danny?
[22:11] Speaker 4: You said?
[22:11] Speaker 3: Another thing for me?
[22:12] Speaker 2: Do you know? Call doctor Sinsky? Don't meet me at
[22:14] Speaker 2: the morgue right away? Hello, doctor Sensky.
[22:32] Speaker 3: What's this all about, Danny? Doctor? How was Alice Mayo killed? Specifically?
[22:37] Speaker 2: That's right, a bullet of large caliber which entered the
[22:42] Speaker 2: paracottal cavity smash who faced the sympathetic nerves of all.
[22:46] Speaker 3: Right, what killed her?
[22:48] Speaker 2: Make up your mind how you want the question answered, Danny,
[22:50] Speaker 2: I'll be happy to give it to you as medical.
[22:52] Speaker 3: Examine or his friend. Let's take a look, Danny, all right,
[22:58] Speaker 3: let's take a look. Enough of a look.
[23:09] Speaker 2: You're sure this bullet warn killed her. Yes, all right,
[23:13] Speaker 2: then't look for a bruise. That's something, anything, anything that
[23:17] Speaker 2: would have made her unconscious before she was shot. Go ahead, Danny,
[23:25] Speaker 2: something here her scalp sept containous bleeding it, Yeah, a
[23:30] Speaker 2: bruise recently, I'd say, fifteen minutes a half hour before
[23:34] Speaker 2: she was killed.
[23:36] Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Danny. This would have turned up later, maybe tomorrow,
[23:39] Speaker 3: But I'm sorry. Hello, I'm mister Clover. You remember Detective Magavan,
[24:06] Speaker 3: don't you?
[24:06] Speaker 7: Hi?
[24:07] Speaker 2: Sure, come on in. You got some news for me? Yeah,
[24:13] Speaker 2: a lot of news. I can take Alice home now. Huh,
[24:16] Speaker 2: I'm afraid not, mister Mayo. Something happened a hitch, a
[24:20] Speaker 2: great big one. What's he mean, mister Clover, Baltimore's son? Huh?
[24:26] Speaker 3: The paper?
[24:27] Speaker 2: What does he mean, mister Clover, A great big one,
[24:29] Speaker 2: A great big what you subscribe to the Sun since
[24:32] Speaker 2: we left Baltimore?
[24:33] Speaker 3: What's he mean? Here's what I mean? Look at this picture, Mayo.
[24:37] Speaker 2: Oh, if my wife's picture were in a paper like that,
[24:39] Speaker 2: I'd never have nerve enough to go back to my
[24:41] Speaker 2: home down You've seen it before, haven't you. All right,
[24:48] Speaker 2: now it's caught up with me in New York, so
[24:51] Speaker 2: I'll move to California. That's all the picture does to you?
[24:54] Speaker 3: Huh, I'm ashamed of it. Is that what you wanted
[24:59] Speaker 3: to hear? That's not what we want to hear.
[25:01] Speaker 2: We want to hear the man's name who's saving your
[25:04] Speaker 2: wife's life, and we want to hear what she's doing
[25:06] Speaker 2: in that fire when she was supposed to be staying
[25:08] Speaker 2: with her mother.
[25:09] Speaker 3: You know, you know Ernie Britt Mail, that's who it is.
[25:14] Speaker 2: Oh well, he saved her life. To me, they love
[25:17] Speaker 2: each other, your wife and Ernie. No, no, she didn't
[25:22] Speaker 2: love him. I've been thinking about it, mister Mayl Well,
[25:25] Speaker 2: I can't figure out a motive why Britt killed your wife.
[25:29] Speaker 3: Yeah, a hero saved your life in Baltimore, then shot
[25:33] Speaker 3: her through a door.
[25:35] Speaker 4: You know, Danny.
[25:36] Speaker 2: Maybe it was a mistake, Yeah, it could have been.
[25:40] Speaker 2: Did you know Britt had a date with your wife
[25:42] Speaker 2: last night? At least that's what he spread around town
[25:45] Speaker 2: Flores Barber Introduction Club.
[25:48] Speaker 3: Everybody knew if I.
[25:49] Speaker 2: Had a date with another man's wife, I sure wouldn't
[25:51] Speaker 2: spread it around unless it's the custom nowadays.
[25:54] Speaker 3: I wouldn't know. I knew, she told me. It's the customer.
[25:59] Speaker 2: No, Uh, it wasn't that. Only thing I can figure
[26:02] Speaker 2: is this mail. Your wife set up a thing with Britt.
[26:06] Speaker 2: Then she got sorry about it and made a confession
[26:09] Speaker 2: to you.
[26:09] Speaker 3: She was sorry, She was sorry about the whole thing.
[26:12] Speaker 3: The way she carried on. They were going to kill you,
[26:16] Speaker 3: weren't they.
[26:18] Speaker 2: He didn't understand me, Danny. You ask him like this mail.
[26:22] Speaker 2: Britt and your wife planned to kill you. They needed
[26:25] Speaker 2: an alibi for nine o'clock last night, so Britt told everybody.
[26:29] Speaker 3: He was going to be with your wife at his place.
[26:32] Speaker 2: That way they'd aliby each other, an alibi that could
[26:35] Speaker 2: have held. I know all that she told me, all
[26:38] Speaker 2: that she told me, and I forgave. We were even
[26:43] Speaker 2: going to leave New York and start all over again
[26:45] Speaker 2: in someplace. I even quit my job. You can check that.
[26:49] Speaker 2: But the point still bothers me, man. Yeah, that's the
[26:51] Speaker 2: point that bothers me too, Danny. Your wife knew that
[26:54] Speaker 2: Britt was going to shoot through the door at nine o'clock,
[26:57] Speaker 2: and that Britt was going to call the police established
[27:00] Speaker 2: the time.
[27:01] Speaker 3: Yet she answered the door at nine o'clock and.
[27:05] Speaker 2: Got shot to death at nine o'clock by Britt. He's
[27:08] Speaker 2: facing a murder charge like you planned it your way
[27:12] Speaker 2: of getting rid of both of them.
[27:14] Speaker 3: Listen to me.
[27:17] Speaker 2: I'm a man who comes from a respectable family. I'm
[27:20] Speaker 2: known in Baltimore all over. We got lots of friends.
[27:25] Speaker 2: What do you think my friend said after they saw
[27:28] Speaker 2: that picture, She told you everything, apologized, you forgave her
[27:32] Speaker 2: in your own way. You slugged her and propped her
[27:35] Speaker 2: up in front of that door. Sure, because what do
[27:38] Speaker 2: you think they'll say now that Fred Mail, he doesn't
[27:43] Speaker 2: mess around.
[27:44] Speaker 3: His wife did a thing like that. You can't fool
[27:48] Speaker 3: with Fred Mail, That's what they'll say. Yeah, may he'll
[27:53] Speaker 3: be a big man in Baltimore. Let's go.
[28:18] Speaker 2: In the minutes before dawn, Broadway lies huddled in a
[28:22] Speaker 2: dreamless sleep. It's the time of no stars, the silent wind.
[28:28] Speaker 2: But walk the streets, take the slow walk and listen.
[28:33] Speaker 2: It's there, It's always there, the sound of weeping. You
[28:40] Speaker 2: know that nighttime will never leave.
[28:44] Speaker 3: It's Broadway, but gaudiest, the most violent, the lonesomest mile
[28:51] Speaker 3: in the world. Broadway My Beat.

[31:19] Speaker 1: Avan going to play Canasta with Doctor Sinsky. That's because
[31:26] Speaker 1: it's never discussed who does the voice of doctor Sinsky.
[31:31] Speaker 1: But someone shared a script of Broadways My Beat in
[31:37] Speaker 1: an old time radio group and it showed that Doctor
[31:41] Speaker 1: Sinsky was actually played by Jack Krushian. So Jack Krushan
[31:48] Speaker 1: was playing one character who was going to play cards
[31:53] Speaker 1: with another character he also played. Well, now it's time

[32:36] Speaker 3: I don't think I get you, Serge, What do you mean? Well?
[32:39] Speaker 2: I mean if you happen to notice anyone suspicious hanging
[32:41] Speaker 2: around the post office.
[32:41] Speaker 3: Out of the loading platform. No, no, no, buddy, how
[32:45] Speaker 3: about on your way to the union station? You know
[32:46] Speaker 3: it's any cars following your mail truck. No, if they were,
[32:48] Speaker 3: I think I'd have noticed it. I usually keep an
[32:50] Speaker 3: eye out when we're making a run. Say that I
[32:52] Speaker 3: got into it.
[32:52] Speaker 2: I guess I'll only been driving a mail truck but
[32:54] Speaker 2: about five years. I've only been handling the registered mail
[32:57] Speaker 2: last couple of months.
[32:58] Speaker 3: So did your truck leave the post office on scheduling.
[33:00] Speaker 3: Then yeah, right, I mean dot we followed the other
[33:02] Speaker 3: trucks out.
[33:03] Speaker 2: You see the trucks that pick up the ordinary mail
[33:05] Speaker 2: a leave first and then our truck leads right after him.
[33:07] Speaker 2: We only handle registered stuff, So the same routine tonight,
[33:10] Speaker 2: you know, different view with the driver of the truck.
[33:12] Speaker 2: That right, But yeah, that's all I do is drive.
[33:14] Speaker 2: Frank's a clerkt offs the guard. That's regulations on trucks
[33:17] Speaker 2: that handle just as straight mail and driver is the
[33:19] Speaker 2: only one aboard registered mail. Truck's got to have three man,
[33:22] Speaker 2: the driver, clerk and the guard.
