[0:55] Speaker 1: As I mentioned on Thursday, Peggy Weber passed away on
[1:00] Speaker 1: August fifteenth at the age of one hundred and. While
[1:03] Speaker 1: she did a lot of radio, probably her contributions to
[1:08] Speaker 1: Dragnet are the most famous. She was associated with Jack
[1:13] Speaker 1: Webb for a long time. In fact, she appeared in
[1:17] Speaker 1: every season of the nineteen sixties Dragnet TV show, and
[1:23] Speaker 1: the full extent of her contribution to the radio program
[1:27] Speaker 1: may never be fully known due to her vocal elasticity
[1:33] Speaker 1: and the way that her characters didn't all sound the
[1:36] Speaker 1: same or all sound like her natural speaking voice, and
[1:41] Speaker 1: that is certainly the case with her most famous character
[1:45] Speaker 1: from Dragnet and her only recurring role that of Joe
[1:50] Speaker 1: Friday's mother. So in honor of Peggy Weber, we're going
[1:53] Speaker 1: to play the first episode in which Joe Friday's mother featured.

[5:21] Speaker 9: But they say it's just terrible, the way he beats

[16:19] Speaker 7: Saturday, March tenth, two pm, I was released from the
[16:22] Speaker 7: p and F ward and went home. Ben stayed on
[16:25] Speaker 7: at the hospital. He had at least another ten days
[16:28] Speaker 7: to go before release. Sunday I spent it home. Monday afternoon,
[16:32] Speaker 7: I checked back in at the office and Captain Steve
[16:34] Speaker 7: putting me on decoy duty for that week along with
[16:36] Speaker 7: Policewoman Dorothy River. We were assigned to cover an isolated parking
[16:40] Speaker 7: area near Mulhullum Drive.
[16:41] Speaker 4: And Beverly Glen.
[16:43] Speaker 7: Was a nice view, but the duty was slow. No
[16:46] Speaker 7: sign of the badge bend. Policewoman River and I waited
[16:49] Speaker 7: it out late evening to early morning from Monday through Thursday.
[16:54] Speaker 7: Friday night came same.
[16:56] Speaker 4: Thing we waited.
[17:00] Speaker 2: Then you see him today.
[17:01] Speaker 4: Yeah, he's doing fine, be out next week, grouchy.
[17:04] Speaker 2: I guess sure? You want a cigarette?
[17:07] Speaker 4: Thank you?
[17:10] Speaker 3: Sure?
[17:10] Speaker 2: Till it's Friday night? Mm night. How did you gets
[17:16] Speaker 2: you're out in force?
[17:18] Speaker 4: What time you got.
[17:20] Speaker 2: A quarter to two? Long nights?
[17:24] Speaker 4: Yeah? Slow?
[17:26] Speaker 5: Cold?
[17:27] Speaker 2: No, are you just a little it's chilly up here
[17:30] Speaker 2: in the early room.
[17:32] Speaker 4: It's up car full of kids just pulling out.
[17:36] Speaker 2: Are the cars going to.
[17:38] Speaker 4: Yeah, we're the only ones left.
[17:43] Speaker 2: Steakhouts giving your nerves.
[17:46] Speaker 4: So look, if you're cold, you can have my code.
[17:47] Speaker 4: It doesn't bother me.
[17:48] Speaker 2: No, No, it's right, Joe. Thanks. It's a beautiful view
[17:54] Speaker 2: from a parent, all the lights. Yeah, you like to
[17:59] Speaker 2: dance to what I said? You like to dance?
[18:03] Speaker 4: Well, once in a while. I guess I'm not too good.
[18:05] Speaker 2: Why well, our club's having its big annual dance two
[18:08] Speaker 2: weeks me Saturday. Yeah, might get a kick out of
[18:11] Speaker 2: it as.
[18:11] Speaker 4: Former leaves me out. I don't want a text.
[18:14] Speaker 2: You could rent one, it'd be fun.
[18:16] Speaker 4: Ah afraid I don't look good in a text.
[18:17] Speaker 2: I never met a man who thought he did. Why
[18:20] Speaker 2: don't you try it? I might be working, well, I mean,
[18:22] Speaker 2: if you're not working, why don't.
[18:23] Speaker 4: You come you going?
[18:25] Speaker 12: Well?
[18:26] Speaker 2: I was planning on.
[18:27] Speaker 4: Got a date.
[18:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, I have hopes.
[18:32] Speaker 4: There's a car pulling in see yeah, parked over in
[18:38] Speaker 4: the back of us.
[18:39] Speaker 2: I can only make out one person in the car.
[18:42] Speaker 4: Yeah, looks like a man. I can't be sure. Alright,
[18:46] Speaker 4: come on over closer. We might as well look the partner. Alright,
[18:52] Speaker 4: it's getting out of the car.
[18:54] Speaker 2: Is it coming this way?
[18:55] Speaker 4: Walking over to the side of their own It's got
[18:57] Speaker 4: a flashlight looking around.
[19:01] Speaker 2: He was built like the Badge Bennitt, short, heavy set.
[19:05] Speaker 4: Yeah, it's turning around. He's got his flashlight on us.
[19:08] Speaker 2: He's coming up on your side of the car.
[19:10] Speaker 4: I take it easy, you know what to do.
[19:16] Speaker 13: Come on out of that car, please, office it all right?
[19:19] Speaker 4: Hold on, got a gun, Joe, Yeah.
[19:22] Speaker 13: Come on, I said, out of the car Volta.
[19:24] Speaker 18: Alright, alright, torop the gun, drop it.
[19:35] Speaker 2: That's jim.
[19:36] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[19:37] Speaker 2: Now, I'll get the cuffs.
[19:38] Speaker 12: Honey.
[19:39] Speaker 4: Thanks. I didn't think I hit him that hard.
[19:43] Speaker 2: You didn't, I didn't.
[19:49] Speaker 7: Policewoman Dorothy River and I took the suspect to Hollywood Division,
[19:52] Speaker 7: where he was booked in suspicion of robbery and gave
[19:55] Speaker 7: his name as Charles Leon Kirby, aged forty six. Monday
[19:59] Speaker 7: March nineteenth, ben was released from the hospital and checked
[20:01] Speaker 7: back in for work. A special show off was held
[20:04] Speaker 7: at which ten of the seventeen victims definitely identified Kirby
[20:06] Speaker 7: as the Badge bandit. The suspect had finally been apprehended.
[20:11] Speaker 7: Now we started the slow process of formerly charging the
[20:13] Speaker 7: man and presenting our evidence against him to bring him
[20:16] Speaker 7: to trial.
[20:18] Speaker 4: Ten Am Ben and I went across.
[20:19] Speaker 7: The street to the sixth floor of the Hall of
[20:21] Speaker 7: Justice to present our case against Kirby and to obtain
[20:24] Speaker 7: a formal complaint against him.
[20:25] Speaker 4: We met with Deputy District Attorney Broker.
[20:27] Speaker 12: Why'n't you get out of the hospital then?
[20:29] Speaker 3: Yes, morning, sure got sick of play?
[20:31] Speaker 5: Heard about your accent?
[20:32] Speaker 3: That guy sure gave enough trouble, isn't he?
[20:34] Speaker 7: Heah, he's still giving his trouble. How's that he got
[20:37] Speaker 7: in a tangle with another prisoner from Hollywood Division.
[20:39] Speaker 13: Muh.
[20:40] Speaker 7: The other prisoner gave Kirby a pretty bad going over,
[20:43] Speaker 7: cut him up and broke his left forearm. They're moving
[20:46] Speaker 7: him in an ambulance from Hollywood to the prison ward
[20:48] Speaker 7: at the General Hospital. When this happened this this morning.
[20:51] Speaker 7: I think they're moving him downtown now.
[20:52] Speaker 5: It's off one now.
[20:54] Speaker 13: How about your reports on Kirby?
[20:55] Speaker 5: They all in order.
[20:56] Speaker 3: Here's a summary report led his ten positive identifications containing
[21:00] Speaker 3: ten cons for uber and ten counts of forcible rape.
[21:04] Speaker 7: Here are seven other crime reports, only partial identification on these.
[21:08] Speaker 5: Okay, what you got for crab writing evidence against him.
[21:13] Speaker 7: All we went through Kirby's apartment on at least a
[21:15] Speaker 7: dozen pieces of property that he took from his victims,
[21:18] Speaker 7: mostly watches and jewelry.
[21:20] Speaker 4: The victims identified every piece we found.
[21:22] Speaker 5: Okay, let me get the details on it.
[21:25] Speaker 4: Excuse me, broke speaking, Yes you Friday, thank you.
[21:32] Speaker 12: Friday?
[21:34] Speaker 4: When yeah, right away? Well that does it? Once, my Kirby,
[21:38] Speaker 4: we just broke out of an ambulance.
[21:49] Speaker 6: You are listening to Dragnet, the case history of a
[21:52] Speaker 6: police investigation presented in the public interest.
[21:56] Speaker 7: As soon as word of Kirby's escape came through, the
[22:04] Speaker 7: information was broadcast to all points all available cruiser cars
[22:08] Speaker 7: and men were rushed to the escape area, and a
[22:10] Speaker 7: door to door canvas got underway. All of the men
[22:12] Speaker 7: were giving mugshots to Kirby together with his description.
[22:15] Speaker 4: Eleven am. Then and I got back to the office.
[22:18] Speaker 7: We found a message from Captain Steed to meet him
[22:20] Speaker 7: in the chief that he checked his office.
[22:23] Speaker 13: Go further notice the busty polls and the union station.
[22:26] Speaker 15: Right, what's the story, Chief, That's what I'm trying to
[22:29] Speaker 15: find out.
[22:29] Speaker 3: Why do you make the break there? Fourth and Maine
[22:31] Speaker 3: couldn't have picked a better spot. The ambulance had just
[22:33] Speaker 3: crossed Third and Maine when Kirby slugged. The guard driver
[22:36] Speaker 3: was too busy dodging traffic to notice what was going
[22:38] Speaker 3: on in back.
[22:39] Speaker 4: It's a lousy break.
[22:40] Speaker 3: Kirby jumped out of the back end of the ambulance
[22:42] Speaker 3: and disappeared in the crowd. No sign of him since
[22:44] Speaker 3: it's fine.
[22:45] Speaker 7: It takes us almost three months to reach the guy
[22:47] Speaker 7: and he breaks away on a cheek flupe like that.
[22:49] Speaker 3: He doesn't have many friends in town. It's only got
[22:51] Speaker 3: one we know of. Yeah, a brother. Kirby stays with
[22:54] Speaker 3: him pretty often from when we gather, and the brother
[22:56] Speaker 3: lives in a.
[22:56] Speaker 5: Rooming house down on Alameda.
[22:57] Speaker 4: Anybody checked that, yet, we've got it staked out.
[23:00] Speaker 3: The brother works at the box factory in the south
[23:01] Speaker 3: end of town. Let's cover too, And it was not
[23:03] Speaker 3: going far with a broken arm.
[23:05] Speaker 4: What did he got?
[23:06] Speaker 12: Pawn shop hold up Sixth Street had a few minutes ago.
[23:09] Speaker 15: Here's the description of the hold up man stocky.
[23:11] Speaker 3: Built, blonde hair, horn, ram glasses, Chevy fag.
[23:14] Speaker 4: You were wrong about that broken arm. Come on.
[23:19] Speaker 7: Eleven twenty am, Ben and I pulled up at the
[23:22] Speaker 7: East Asia pawn shop on Sixth Street. Inside we found
[23:25] Speaker 7: the proprietor, Morris Brubaker, lying propped up against one of
[23:28] Speaker 7: the showcases. It was an elderly man. His face and
[23:30] Speaker 7: the head showed the marks of a savage beating. His
[23:33] Speaker 7: wounds were hemorrhaging badly, and ambulance attendants were giving him first aid.
[23:37] Speaker 4: I showed him Charles Kirby's mugshot.
[23:40] Speaker 12: That's the man I would make a mistake. That's sham.
[23:43] Speaker 3: Was he a lone miss Brewbaker?
[23:45] Speaker 12: Yes, by himself. He has to look at a watch.
[23:48] Speaker 12: When I tried to get it, he kicked me.
[23:50] Speaker 19: I fell against the showcase and cut myself.
[23:54] Speaker 12: He pulled me in the back room. I didn't even
[23:56] Speaker 12: know me. He Kelly kept beating me.
[23:58] Speaker 3: Mister Brewbaker didn't get this comfy.
[24:01] Speaker 4: How much did he get away with? You know?
[24:03] Speaker 12: I'm not sure. Blue shot, blue overcoat, wrap around and
[24:07] Speaker 12: navy blue booth.
[24:09] Speaker 4: He kept hitting me, so just take it easy. They'll
[24:11] Speaker 4: have you out of here in a minute.
[24:12] Speaker 12: Kept hitting me like a crazy man. This is an
[24:14] Speaker 12: a septic mind stealing.
[24:17] Speaker 3: Okay, what else do you take me to?
[24:19] Speaker 4: Crew back?
[24:19] Speaker 3: Can you remember yes?
[24:22] Speaker 12: From the cash REDI see he took money.
[24:24] Speaker 4: How much?
[24:25] Speaker 12: Thirteen forty dollars? I can't be sure when he.
[24:27] Speaker 4: Left your store?
[24:28] Speaker 3: Did you see which way he was going?
[24:30] Speaker 12: I don't know. He dragged me in the back room,
[24:32] Speaker 12: he locked me.
[24:32] Speaker 19: And moving now, so I said, okay, I know I
[24:36] Speaker 19: saw him going through the shelves are and the back
[24:39] Speaker 19: of the carner. I don't know what'd you keep my
[24:42] Speaker 19: account books and my gun box.
[24:45] Speaker 12: Of shells too.
[24:45] Speaker 4: You won't take a look then, well.
[24:47] Speaker 12: My head, yes, sir, Just take it easy.
[24:49] Speaker 4: It's only going to be a minute now.
[24:51] Speaker 3: The count books are still there.
[24:52] Speaker 4: Yeah, he got the gun.
[24:58] Speaker 7: Four pm, Kirby alias the Badge bandit was still at large.
[25:01] Speaker 7: As far as we were concerned, the case was almost
[25:04] Speaker 7: back to where it started from eleven weeks before. The
[25:06] Speaker 7: suspect was still loose, was well armed, was still free
[25:10] Speaker 7: to rob, assault, her murder. We had two big advantages,
[25:13] Speaker 7: Kirby's possible broken arm, which would need medical attention, and secondly, the.
[25:17] Speaker 4: Lead to Kirby's brother.
[25:19] Speaker 3: At five point.
[25:20] Speaker 7: Thirty pm, we had a report that the suspect was
[25:22] Speaker 7: seen purchasing a ticket at a theater.
[25:23] Speaker 4: Box office out in Hollywood, boulevard. We ran it down,
[25:27] Speaker 4: it didn't pay off.
[25:28] Speaker 7: At six point fifteen, a taxi driver thought he spotted
[25:31] Speaker 7: Kirby boarding an outbound street car.
[25:33] Speaker 4: Figaro and Pico was checked out, no results.
[25:37] Speaker 7: At seven o'clock, Ben and I got something to eat
[25:39] Speaker 7: to drive in and we relieved the men on steak
[25:41] Speaker 7: out at the rooming house on Alameda Street where Kirby's
[25:44] Speaker 7: brother was staying.
[25:46] Speaker 4: Ten pm. Midnight, no sign of Kirby. We waited.
[25:52] Speaker 7: At three am, Hanson and Cummings of Homicide relieved us
[25:55] Speaker 7: and Ben drove me home. Was three forty five when
[25:58] Speaker 7: he dropped me off at Collis Adam No. Number forty
[26:00] Speaker 7: six fifty six.
[26:12] Speaker 4: Joseph, that you, yeah, my I didn't mean to wake you.
[26:17] Speaker 8: What tell you?
[26:18] Speaker 4: Is it almost for.
[26:21] Speaker 8: These late hours? You've got to get your rest.
[26:24] Speaker 4: Joseph, we'll be all right. MA got something to eat
[26:27] Speaker 4: in the ice box.
[26:28] Speaker 8: There's a little cold meat and some cheese in the cupboards.
[26:31] Speaker 4: I just want a sandwich. You're going back to sleep.
[26:34] Speaker 8: I had some nice meatballs and spaghetti for dinner. I
[26:37] Speaker 8: can BOMs done for you. My house sandwich is.
[26:44] Speaker 11: Working a whole hours.
[26:46] Speaker 8: You just get sick.
[26:47] Speaker 11: Joseph, and you will seen. Nobody cares about you when
[26:49] Speaker 11: you're skipping.
[26:50] Speaker 4: I wish you wouldn't get up mine. I can fix something.
[26:52] Speaker 11: Warm up the meat balls and spaghetti. You need something,
[26:55] Speaker 11: some stamps?
[26:56] Speaker 15: Sure, I get it, coy am.
[26:59] Speaker 8: I got that.
[27:03] Speaker 13: Well Larman down homicide. Yeah, Larmon, thought you'd like to know.
[27:06] Speaker 4: They just got Kirby where and his brother's place.
[27:09] Speaker 13: About fifteen minutes ago. Hanson and coming's.
[27:11] Speaker 4: Gradude any trouble.
[27:13] Speaker 13: No, grabbed him before he got to his gun. He
[27:16] Speaker 13: just locked him up. Thought you'd like to know.
[27:18] Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks, Marmon.
[27:20] Speaker 11: Night right, Well that wasn't Joseph.
[27:28] Speaker 4: The offers, Ma, they got Kirby the bad spend.
[27:31] Speaker 10: Oh d say, well that's nice. Maybe you have some
[27:35] Speaker 10: time off now?
[27:36] Speaker 12: Yeah?
[27:37] Speaker 7: Never fails, does it? You work on a case for
[27:39] Speaker 7: three months, leave it for thirty minutes.
[27:41] Speaker 4: It's all over.
[27:42] Speaker 11: Well, food's warm. Is there anything else you won't?
[27:48] Speaker 12: No?
[27:48] Speaker 4: No, that's fine, Ma.
[27:49] Speaker 10: You go on to bed, all right, Joseph, and don't
[27:53] Speaker 10: stay up too long?
[27:54] Speaker 4: All right? Right?
[27:58] Speaker 18: Hey Ma?
[28:00] Speaker 8: Yes, Jess, have.
[28:01] Speaker 4: I still got that old tuxedo around.
[28:12] Speaker 3: The story you have just heard was true, only the
[28:15] Speaker 3: names were changed. To protect the innocent.
[28:18] Speaker 6: On June twenty seventh, trial was held in Superior Court,
[28:21] Speaker 6: Apartment eighty seventh, City and County of Los Angeles, State
[28:24] Speaker 6: of California. In a moment the results of that trial,
[28:34] Speaker 6: Charles Leon Kirby, alias the Badge Bandit, was tried and
[28:37] Speaker 6: convicted in Superior Court on several counts of armed robbery, rape,
[28:41] Speaker 6: and assault with intent to commit murder. He was sentenced
[28:44] Speaker 6: to life imprisonment. After serving one year in the state penitentiary,
[28:47] Speaker 6: he was judged insane and committed to the State Mental
[28:50] Speaker 6: Hospital at Mendocino. After two months there, he escaped. Charles Kirby,
[28:54] Speaker 6: alias the Badge Bandit is still at large. You have
[28:58] Speaker 6: just heard dragnet of authentic cases from official fails. Technical
[29:02] Speaker 6: advice for Dragnett comes from the Office of Chief of
[29:05] Speaker 6: Police W. A.
[29:06] Speaker 4: Wharton.
[29:07] Speaker 3: This is NBC, the National Broadcasting Company.
[29:21] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, given the our focus, we should call
[29:26] Speaker 1: in on the character that Peggy Weber created here. It
[29:31] Speaker 1: served a very important purpose for what they were trying
[29:35] Speaker 1: to do with the Joe Friday character at the time.
[29:39] Speaker 1: It humanized him, and I think it also did so
[29:45] Speaker 1: while not giving him romantic attachments. It's a very different
[29:50] Speaker 1: experience of Joe Friday to have someone who is concerned
[29:56] Speaker 1: and fretting over him and thinking about him as something
[30:01] Speaker 1: odther than a one man police army. Now, this wouldn't
[30:05] Speaker 1: fit with where they would take the character later on,
[30:08] Speaker 1: as he became a lot more iconic, particularly when you
[30:13] Speaker 1: get into the sixties series, but later on in the
[30:16] Speaker 1: fifties as well. But her performance is solid in bringing
[30:21] Speaker 1: this different type of character to Dragnet. Now, of course,
[30:26] Speaker 1: you could critique the fact that she sounds a bit
[30:30] Speaker 1: too old. Joe Friday at this point is in his thirties,
[30:36] Speaker 1: and if his mother had him at a typical age
[30:41] Speaker 1: for a woman in that time, she would probably be
[30:46] Speaker 1: in her early to mid fifties, and she sounds well
[30:51] Speaker 1: into her sixties or like she has had some serious
[30:54] Speaker 1: health challenges that would make her voice older. But that
[30:58] Speaker 1: is typical for the time. And what you have to
[31:01] Speaker 1: appreciate about Peggy Weber as an actress is that she
[31:07] Speaker 1: was just twenty four years old when she created this character,
[31:12] Speaker 1: and you would never guess that you were hearing the
[31:14] Speaker 1: voice of a twenty four year old woman. And what's
[31:17] Speaker 1: remarkable about Peggy Weber is that she was such a
[31:21] Speaker 1: pro even at a young age and continued well into
[31:28] Speaker 1: this century with her excellence in so many different areas
[31:33] Speaker 1: of the entertainment field. Now, before we get away from
[31:36] Speaker 1: talking about Peggy Weber, I also wanted just to share
[31:40] Speaker 1: my two favorite Peggy Weber Dragnet episodes. In the nineteen
[31:45] Speaker 1: fifties series, It's Got to Be the Big Mother, in
[31:49] Speaker 1: which she plays a grief stricken whose child was born
[31:56] Speaker 1: dead and ended up kidnapping a maybe from the hospital
[32:02] Speaker 1: to avoid telling her her husband the heartbreaking truth and
[32:08] Speaker 1: because of her own grief, and she explains herself in
[32:13] Speaker 1: this heartbreaking monologue. It's just beautifully performed. And then on
[32:19] Speaker 1: the other end, my favorite episode with her from the
[32:22] Speaker 1: nineteen sixties series was The Harassing Wife is a bit
[32:28] Speaker 1: of a comedy episode. She plays the vindictive ex wife
[32:32] Speaker 1: of an ex convict who keeps accusing him of a
[32:38] Speaker 1: series of thefts that are being committed around town. And
[32:44] Speaker 1: really it's the same actress, but it's an incredible performance.
[32:50] Speaker 1: She's able to play both type of roles quite well. Now,
[32:56] Speaker 1: The Callis Avenue Address is interesting. First of all, it
[33:02] Speaker 1: does round Friday in a specific location. It places Friday
[33:08] Speaker 1: in a residential neighborhood six to seven miles from work,
[33:15] Speaker 1: so he's got a reasonable commute for the time anyway.
[33:19] Speaker 1: And not only that, the actual address exists, and it
[33:24] Speaker 1: existed back in nineteen fifty. I couldn't find any details
[33:30] Speaker 1: as to who might have been the occupant as to
[33:33] Speaker 1: why they were choosing that specific address, although they would
[33:37] Speaker 1: repeat it several times throughout the series, so there's a reason.
[33:41] Speaker 1: I'm just not sure what it's for. I think as
[33:45] Speaker 1: an episode this is great. There's so much going on.
[33:51] Speaker 1: The car wreck is a great scene and does show
[33:55] Speaker 1: a actual hazard that you face on the Force, and
[34:00] Speaker 1: that then you had Friday capturing the badge bandit and
[34:04] Speaker 1: the case not being over because he got away, and
[34:07] Speaker 1: then of course that sort of rug pull at the
[34:10] Speaker 1: end that you'll get with drag Net where it ends
[34:13] Speaker 1: up that the criminal ends up getting captured off screen
[34:17] Speaker 1: and that happens to real life policeman bought a bed
[34:22] Speaker 1: as well, And it's a nice contrast between his mom
[34:26] Speaker 1: just being glad that the case is over and Joe
[34:28] Speaker 1: being upset that he missed out on the caller after
[34:32] Speaker 1: being on the case so much. But it's a nice

[36:35] Speaker 2: Oh, Sammy didn't tell me that.
[36:36] Speaker 18: That's important for a number of reasons. I think maybe
