[1:22] Speaker 1: nineteen forty nine, here is three gold coin spelled death.
[1:29] Speaker 2: The Big Story.
[1:37] Speaker 3: It was Sunday morning along US Highway sixty six, heading
[1:41] Speaker 3: west from Telsaje, Clinton, Oklahoma. Missus Rose Penn and her
[1:46] Speaker 3: son were driving to church.
[1:49] Speaker 4: Jim, Jim, to stop the Car's the monomer?
[1:53] Speaker 5: I told you stop the car.
[1:57] Speaker 4: Don't you see it over there? On the side of
[1:58] Speaker 4: the road. A cost is a man sleeping on that car?
[2:01] Speaker 6: There's no business advises it't Maurah, A fellos got a
[2:04] Speaker 6: right to sleep.
[2:05] Speaker 7: You get on out of this car and find out
[2:06] Speaker 7: why you're sleeping there on the cot beside the road,
[2:08] Speaker 7: whether like this? Now go on, well, well.
[2:18] Speaker 8: What are you standing there for?
[2:20] Speaker 9: Is he all right?
[2:22] Speaker 5: Is he sleeping?
[2:24] Speaker 3: He's sleeping, Maurah, He's sleeping, but he ain't never going
[2:29] Speaker 3: to wake up.
[2:39] Speaker 2: Taltzer, Oklahoma. The story of a reporter who found three
[2:43] Speaker 2: golden coins that's spelled death. Teltzer, Oklahoma. The story is
[2:54] Speaker 2: it actually happened, Reporter Nolan Bullock's story as he lived it.
[3:09] Speaker 3: You, Nolan Bullock of the Tulsa Tribune, our reporter with
[3:13] Speaker 3: a flattened nose, and you've got it by staking it
[3:17] Speaker 3: consistently into other people's business. Like now you sit in
[3:22] Speaker 3: the fashionable Will Rogers' Hotel and clamor near Telson and
[3:26] Speaker 3: take part in a business conference. The business being, since
[3:31] Speaker 3: Oklahoma is a dry state bootlegging, and your job that
[3:36] Speaker 3: of undercover agent for the State Crime Bureau. Your name
[3:39] Speaker 3: for today, Nolan Bullock, is mister Norton.
[3:44] Speaker 10: Mighty good meal, I sir, here, mister Norton, mighty good.
[3:47] Speaker 11: Cigar, mister Ritchie, okay, perfect, thank you kindly.
[3:53] Speaker 4: I have been sitting quiet all through the meal, mister Richie.
[3:56] Speaker 4: Do we talk business now, yes, sure thing, mister Norton.
[3:59] Speaker 4: But to tell you the I don't think we can
[4:01] Speaker 4: make a deal. We've had a week to check my
[4:03] Speaker 4: credit and no, no, no it's not the credit. Well what
[4:05] Speaker 4: is it? Then? I've been without merchandise three and a
[4:07] Speaker 4: half weeks.
[4:07] Speaker 11: Now, Look, I explained to you last time, a change
[4:10] Speaker 11: in the corporation as big as mine. That takes time,
[4:12] Speaker 11: mister Norton. When mister Veeze was alive, the man in
[4:15] Speaker 11: child before mister Breton, I told him you've got to
[4:18] Speaker 11: prepare for eventualities like this.
[4:20] Speaker 10: But he didn't listen to me. Nobody listens to an account.
[4:22] Speaker 4: Look, all I know is that I've got to have
[4:24] Speaker 4: twenty one cases of stock to let so loud please,
[4:26] Speaker 4: mister Norton. And I need two dozen barrels weekly regularly.
[4:31] Speaker 4: When am I going to get a definite answer? You
[4:33] Speaker 4: know there are other firms to deal with.
[4:35] Speaker 10: Now, you wouldn't want to do that, mister Norton.
[4:37] Speaker 11: When mister Breton comes in and takes over, that's the
[4:39] Speaker 11: man you want to deal with, and the only one
[4:41] Speaker 11: in this state. I worked for mister Breton years ago,
[4:44] Speaker 11: and I tell you, frankly, I'm looking forward to his return.
[4:48] Speaker 11: Things never were the same in all the years he
[4:50] Speaker 11: was away. He's a fine man, mister Breton, strictly a business.
[4:52] Speaker 11: But the best terms you could get them leave.
[4:54] Speaker 4: But I know about mister Breedon. All I am asking
[4:57] Speaker 4: you now is when does he get here? When can
[5:00] Speaker 4: we make our final arrangements.
[5:02] Speaker 10: To tell you the truth? Mister Norton, he ought to
[5:04] Speaker 10: have been here yesterday.
[5:05] Speaker 11: He left California. Oh, must have been three days ago.
[5:09] Speaker 11: I believe I'll wire him and find out if there
[5:11] Speaker 11: was any change in his plan.
[5:13] Speaker 4: I've got one hundred and twenty one establishments waiting on,
[5:15] Speaker 4: mister Breedon. Those customers want beer, they want wine, they
[5:19] Speaker 4: want whiskey, and they want it now. They are not
[5:22] Speaker 4: interested in any of my business difficulties.
[5:28] Speaker 3: And so you, Nolan Bullock, undercover agent and reporter, watch
[5:33] Speaker 3: the pleasanter Capital leave and you make your call. Capital
[5:38] Speaker 3: two thousand, State Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Let me add
[5:45] Speaker 3: mister Oliver things as this is Nolan Bullock. Oh, I'm sorry.
[5:50] Speaker 3: I can't talk to you.
[5:51] Speaker 4: Know well, I have just let Richie expect breeding in
[5:54] Speaker 4: a few days for Pete's sake.
[5:55] Speaker 6: I can't talk to you.
[5:55] Speaker 12: I've got to run where we got to run?
[5:57] Speaker 6: If you must know?
[5:58] Speaker 3: Dead man, report it out on Route sixty six. He look,
[6:00] Speaker 3: I'm supposed to be out there. I can't see that
[6:02] Speaker 3: you're talking to you murder that looks like it. Well,
[6:04] Speaker 3: you don't have to talk to me on the phone.
[6:06] Speaker 4: I'll meet you there.
[6:06] Speaker 12: Where is it?
[6:07] Speaker 3: Oh no, I'm not ready to give anything out on this.
[6:09] Speaker 12: I look naked.
[6:10] Speaker 4: You don't tell me where to meet you on that killing.
[6:12] Speaker 4: I'll get off this breeding case fast. That's black man,
[6:15] Speaker 4: I'll call it what you like.
[6:16] Speaker 6: Where is it?
[6:16] Speaker 3: About two miles outside of Clinton on Route sixty six,
[6:19] Speaker 3: big gas station that side of the roads.
[6:22] Speaker 12: It I won't.
[6:27] Speaker 3: And so you, Nolan Bullock, drop the story about the
[6:30] Speaker 3: boot legs syndicate and hop on the biggest story, the
[6:34] Speaker 3: story of murder. And now you stand with Special Investigator
[6:38] Speaker 3: Nick Oliver, both of you shaking your head at the
[6:41] Speaker 3: dead man lying on the cot just off Route sixty
[6:44] Speaker 3: six near Clinton.
[6:46] Speaker 12: Oh, possible way of identification?
[6:48] Speaker 6: H nothing.
[6:49] Speaker 3: I'll get Haynes with a finger print dure and see
[6:51] Speaker 3: if his prints tell us anything. I don't think even
[6:55] Speaker 3: the mother would recognize his face. Hey, where are you going?
[6:59] Speaker 12: Looking around?
[7:00] Speaker 6: Wish that ambulance will get here? What are you looking for?
[7:04] Speaker 12: Something in the grass? Nick?
[7:07] Speaker 4: Kay?
[7:08] Speaker 6: Do you know it's a coin?
[7:12] Speaker 12: Here's another one? Let me see there's a Mexican.
[7:15] Speaker 6: Coins, right, that's what they are.
[7:17] Speaker 12: Well, what are they doing here?
[7:18] Speaker 1: I know?
[7:19] Speaker 3: Well we've got something anyhow, It's not much more than nothing,
[7:22] Speaker 3: but it's something.
[7:24] Speaker 6: Finally, the ambulance. Yes, so you okay? Sentem in.
[7:42] Speaker 3: Somebody thinks he's got something on the murder Onen, and
[7:44] Speaker 3: somebody's got something more than we have.
[7:46] Speaker 6: Next Everyen Burns reverence her mister Burns.
[7:50] Speaker 13: You see, Lieutenant, I'm not an ordained minister, merely an
[7:53] Speaker 13: evangelical preacher who tries to bring a little understanding a lieutenant.
[7:57] Speaker 6: It's not lieutenant, just mister.
[7:59] Speaker 3: I beg your pardon, sir, like you said, not lieutenant,
[8:02] Speaker 3: just mister pride right.
[8:03] Speaker 13: And the last Saturday, Sir, I was holding my regular
[8:05] Speaker 13: campfire meeting. We hold campfire meetings every Saturday evening, all
[8:08] Speaker 13: the way up and down Highway six to six. That night, Sir,
[8:11] Speaker 13: I was preaching on.
[8:12] Speaker 6: The side, said you knew something about the murder.
[8:15] Speaker 13: I was coming to that directly, sir. It was toward
[8:17] Speaker 13: the end of my sermon. The disturbance came from a
[8:19] Speaker 13: campfire not too far distant. But you see, so the
[8:22] Speaker 13: men were shouting, and the wind you see.
[8:23] Speaker 6: Was born.
[8:24] Speaker 13: He's mister Burns, so you see their voices were walked
[8:27] Speaker 13: in my direction. There were three men, sir, and they
[8:29] Speaker 13: were having I must say, a most profane fight. You
[8:32] Speaker 13: can imagine the language. And that's also I knew something
[8:37] Speaker 13: dreadful was going to happen, and I thought for a
[8:39] Speaker 13: moment I would intervene, but then I thought better of it,
[8:42] Speaker 13: and I didn't.
[8:42] Speaker 6: And that's all that happened.
[8:43] Speaker 4: Did you see any of them their faces?
[8:45] Speaker 6: It was rather a dark night.
[8:47] Speaker 13: If it's of any value, though I don't see how
[8:49] Speaker 13: it possibly can be. They had a station wagon park
[8:52] Speaker 13: next to the fire, and I think one of the men,
[8:54] Speaker 13: amidst the profanity.
[8:55] Speaker 6: Called the other, yes, thank you very much, mister Burns.
[8:59] Speaker 6: Not to talk.
[9:02] Speaker 13: I shall be holding a meeting on Saturday as usually,
[9:04] Speaker 13: just two miles out of Tulsa on route six to six.
[9:06] Speaker 6: If you should want me, thank you. Mind closing the door.
[9:14] Speaker 12: That's a great help.
[9:16] Speaker 4: Somebody name of Ace, and there was a station leg.
[9:18] Speaker 6: Maybe don't forget. It was a dark.
[9:21] Speaker 12: Night, but the wind was blowing.
[9:28] Speaker 3: A week goes by a week of feverish activity by
[9:31] Speaker 3: Nick Oliver on the murder story, and by you and
[9:34] Speaker 3: Nolan Bullock on the murder case, and on the bootleg syndica,
[9:38] Speaker 3: And when you add it all up, it's less than
[9:41] Speaker 3: the faint sound of the name.
[9:42] Speaker 6: Ace on the night air. You keep spending time at.
[9:46] Speaker 3: Headquarters waiting, hoping it lostly goes with it, and then.
[9:55] Speaker 6: A routine message comes through on the police teleor.
[9:57] Speaker 3: Type request owner Oklahoma license seven to one three nine
[10:03] Speaker 3: one truck stranded here? Answer soonest police Chief Indio, California,
[10:11] Speaker 3: and Nick Oliver puts through the routine requests in the
[10:14] Speaker 3: routine way license seven one three one name, Hey Nolan.
[10:21] Speaker 6: Wake up?
[10:23] Speaker 14: What's the matter?
[10:24] Speaker 12: What did you say?
[10:25] Speaker 6: Guess whose truck is stranded out in California?
[10:28] Speaker 12: What are you talking about?
[10:29] Speaker 6: That request we got from Indio?
[10:31] Speaker 12: Oh? Yeah, sure?
[10:34] Speaker 3: What about the owner of that car in California was
[10:36] Speaker 3: named Thomas Breeden.
[10:38] Speaker 4: Reden, Well, that's my man, just California on the phone, and.
[10:42] Speaker 3: You put me through to the police chief in Indio.
[10:44] Speaker 3: Would you think I was calling Nolan my bootlegger?
[10:55] Speaker 4: Ss right?
[10:55] Speaker 3: Chief fellow's name was Thomas Breeden. And we're interested in
[10:59] Speaker 3: him too. Tell me everything you've got. Oh, you jailed him.
[11:05] Speaker 12: That's why I didn't meet me in the coop in California.
[11:08] Speaker 6: Uh huh? Ol passo? Huh what do you know?
[11:12] Speaker 12: What about ol passo? Hey?
[11:14] Speaker 6: Nick?
[11:14] Speaker 4: What about ol passo?
[11:15] Speaker 6: You check with the FBI? Euh fine, fine, what is
[11:19] Speaker 6: this FBI?
[11:20] Speaker 4: L passo?
[11:21] Speaker 6: Nick? Chief, you've been very helpful. Is any time you're
[11:25] Speaker 6: in tells it? Yes? See if I'll do that. Say
[11:30] Speaker 6: how's the weather out there?
[11:31] Speaker 4: Nick?
[11:32] Speaker 6: Ninety two degrees? Huh? You don't say we got blizzard
[11:35] Speaker 6: weather here? It's so long, Jeeve?
[11:38] Speaker 4: Hell, do you want me to slangle you?
[11:40] Speaker 3: It seems your friend Tom Breeden was picked up about
[11:43] Speaker 3: a week ago by the.
[11:44] Speaker 6: Police chief in India.
[11:45] Speaker 3: He was driving a truck, went through a red light
[11:48] Speaker 3: and hit somebody.
[11:50] Speaker 6: Wasn't serious.
[11:50] Speaker 3: They put him in the coop for five days, took
[11:52] Speaker 3: his prints and all that. Chiefs said, he acted like
[11:54] Speaker 3: a man going to be sentence to the chair, nervous,
[11:57] Speaker 3: and so he checked on him in Washington. I don't know,
[12:00] Speaker 3: with some delay, I guess on the chiefs end in
[12:02] Speaker 3: checking the Prince with Washington, and he didn't get the
[12:05] Speaker 3: answer on Breden until after he was let out. Nick,
[12:08] Speaker 3: get to the point, Okay, when the report came through,
[12:12] Speaker 3: it seems Breeden is wanted by the federal authorities at
[12:15] Speaker 3: El Paso for entering the country illegally with close to
[12:18] Speaker 3: seventeen thousand dollars in Mexican coins.
[12:21] Speaker 12: What's going?
[12:21] Speaker 6: That's what the man said. When he last left California.
[12:24] Speaker 3: He was seen driving in the station wagon with two men,
[12:27] Speaker 3: one named Bronson, one named Styles. The first name of
[12:30] Speaker 3: the fellow called Styles was Ace. What about Breeden, Well,
[12:34] Speaker 3: you see all on. The reason you never met Breden
[12:36] Speaker 3: is because his prints are the same as those of
[12:38] Speaker 3: the man we saw on the cut of US sixty
[12:42] Speaker 3: six awful Dead. What started out for you, Nolan Bullock,
[12:59] Speaker 3: reporter for the Pelt Tribune, as an undercover job as
[13:02] Speaker 3: a bootlegger, is now a murder story involving the FBI,
[13:07] Speaker 3: two indistinct figures named A Styles and somebody Bronson, and
[13:11] Speaker 3: seventeen thousand dollars in Mexican coins. You and Nick Oliver
[13:16] Speaker 3: know you aren't much nearer a solution, and you are
[13:19] Speaker 3: the time you stood and looked at the battered head
[13:21] Speaker 3: of Thomas Breeden. And so you decide to go back
[13:25] Speaker 3: to the will Rogers Hotel and clam aw. Maybe the
[13:28] Speaker 3: contact man of the syndic at the accountant knows something.
[13:33] Speaker 4: Look, mister Richie, you said in a few days i'd
[13:35] Speaker 4: get an answer.
[13:35] Speaker 11: Yes, I know, I know, but something has happened to
[13:37] Speaker 11: mister Breton. Could you use a good man in your organization.
[13:43] Speaker 11: I'm a fine accountant, I'm honest and I am accurate.
[13:48] Speaker 11: I was with mister Breton for few years. I tell
[13:50] Speaker 11: you I know the bootleg business.
[13:53] Speaker 4: I'd like to help you, mister Richie, and maybe I
[13:55] Speaker 4: can if you put me in touch with whoather is
[13:58] Speaker 4: taking over now that mister Breeden.
[14:00] Speaker 11: I think I have too, as soon as I know anything,
[14:02] Speaker 11: And you can use a good man in the urbanisation.
[14:06] Speaker 12: Well we'll see all right. Now I'd better pay the
[14:09] Speaker 12: check and get going.
[14:09] Speaker 10: Yes, well, I'll run on ahead. And see what I
[14:12] Speaker 10: can find out for you. You have no idea how
[14:14] Speaker 10: I am.
[14:16] Speaker 12: That is where I pay the check.
[14:17] Speaker 7: That's right, just a moment. I'm sorry. I nearly gave
[14:22] Speaker 7: you that phony coin.
[14:23] Speaker 4: I be mean to put the side.
[14:25] Speaker 12: Let me see that. Maybe that's a Mexican coin. Where
[14:28] Speaker 12: did you get it?
[14:29] Speaker 7: Someone's been passed and then you grew up a cigar acount?
[14:31] Speaker 7: I got one, and I got this. When was this
[14:33] Speaker 7: this morning? Sometime we gave it to you. I really
[14:36] Speaker 7: notice some man, by the time I saw it wasn't
[14:38] Speaker 7: a real coin, had already gone out, ran out of
[14:40] Speaker 7: the front steps, and I saw and drive off he
[14:42] Speaker 7: and another man who was with it.
[14:43] Speaker 4: Did you have to know what they drove up in?
[14:45] Speaker 12: No?
[14:45] Speaker 10: Just a car?
[14:46] Speaker 12: Was it a station wagon?
[14:47] Speaker 13: You mean one of those?
[14:49] Speaker 4: Say now that you mention it, it's just what it was.
[14:52] Speaker 8: You know.
[14:52] Speaker 7: I have to make that.
[14:53] Speaker 4: Up out of my own pop. No, you don't, sister.
[14:55] Speaker 4: Here's a dollar to take its place. Let me have
[14:57] Speaker 4: that little Mexican phony, Nick, guess what happened?
[15:06] Speaker 6: Come on, if you've got something, you.
[15:08] Speaker 4: Remember that Mexican who showed up those three Mexicans.
[15:13] Speaker 12: Blondes the Golden blondes.
[15:16] Speaker 4: Well, I found a friend of theirs at the cashiers
[15:18] Speaker 4: and the restaurant, the will Rogers's Hotel.
[15:20] Speaker 6: Meet it there and I make it half an hour.
[15:22] Speaker 4: Nine oh seven is my room, Nick.
[15:31] Speaker 10: Alone, mister Norton, this is mister Richie. I've got something
[15:34] Speaker 10: you'll find very exciting. You can meet the new boss.
[15:37] Speaker 11: How you know the road off US sixty six stairs, Well,
[15:41] Speaker 11: go past the gas station at Ember Street. It's a
[15:43] Speaker 11: little dirt road, a little left off sixty six, A
[15:46] Speaker 11: left turn. You can't miss it. It runs down through the
[15:49] Speaker 11: Verdigree Valley. There's a big white house, green shutters. That's
[15:53] Speaker 11: two and a half miles down the road. All right, planks, Richie.
[15:56] Speaker 11: Now please don't say I told you to go there,
[15:57] Speaker 11: mister Naughton. The boss might not like it. His name
[16:00] Speaker 11: is Bronson, Okay, rich And I won't forget. When I
[16:04] Speaker 11: get a setup, i'll find.
[16:05] Speaker 4: A place in it.
[16:06] Speaker 10: Oh, thank you, mister Norton, Thank you very much.
[16:15] Speaker 12: Now what to do?
[16:16] Speaker 4: Nick?
[16:16] Speaker 3: Oliver is on his way, can't be reached, and you
[16:20] Speaker 3: know how to find a new boss. It takes only
[16:22] Speaker 3: a moment to make up your mind. You turn left
[16:27] Speaker 3: at the gas station off sixty six. Take the road
[16:30] Speaker 3: to Verdigree Valley. You'll keep her in second as you
[16:34] Speaker 3: get down the incline and the road is wide enough
[16:37] Speaker 3: now for just one car. Now coming at you is
[16:43] Speaker 3: another dusty car and there isn't a room for both
[16:46] Speaker 3: of you to pass.
[16:47] Speaker 6: You stop and then you see a station ladder. Not
[16:53] Speaker 6: much room.
[16:53] Speaker 13: Eh, that's right, but looks like one of us is
[16:57] Speaker 13: going to have to back up.
[16:59] Speaker 4: Say is your name Ace?
[17:02] Speaker 6: What is it gonna be Mac?
[17:03] Speaker 4: You or us?
[17:04] Speaker 12: Who backs up?
[17:05] Speaker 4: Well, I was supposed to meet up.
[17:06] Speaker 13: I get better for you, Bud, and we're in a hurry, so.
[17:13] Speaker 3: Your back her up, trying to get a look at
[17:15] Speaker 3: the license places, but the man in the car there's
[17:18] Speaker 3: too much dust on the road. And then finally when
[17:21] Speaker 3: you reach a point where you can back up off
[17:23] Speaker 3: the road, nothing pass. Something inside tells you we'll let go, villain.
[17:28] Speaker 12: You better keep your head down as they go by.
[17:31] Speaker 6: Duck and wait for it.
[17:33] Speaker 10: But it doesn't come. There's no shot.
[17:35] Speaker 3: And then you see them hitting forty fifty pruning away
[17:38] Speaker 3: from you before you can swing your car back on
[17:40] Speaker 3: the road and follow them, And it takes you an
[17:42] Speaker 3: hour and a half. It seems to reach the next
[17:43] Speaker 3: gas station just a quarter of a mile away before
[17:46] Speaker 3: you can call Nick.
[17:49] Speaker 4: Nick or I saw them, at least I think I
[17:51] Speaker 4: saw them. I mean Styles and Bronson in the station
[17:53] Speaker 4: wagon out on a dirt road, all sixty six. No, no, no,
[17:56] Speaker 4: I checked that. There's a little gas station. That's where
[17:58] Speaker 4: I'm calling from. No station wagon came out from the canyon.
[18:02] Speaker 4: It must have turned off one of the side roads around,
[18:03] Speaker 4: many of them, I'm sure, yes, four or five men
[18:05] Speaker 4: to do the job.
[18:07] Speaker 12: All right over.
[18:08] Speaker 14: Here, shout it off, Mick. Yeah, over there, you'll see it.
[18:28] Speaker 14: That's the wagon.
[18:29] Speaker 3: Very convenient, nice place for a headquarters. The house in
[18:34] Speaker 3: the valley, and the car. Oh mean, let's go slow. Yeah, sure,
[18:45] Speaker 3: this is the wagon chere on the shore. Let's see
[18:53] Speaker 3: what's in it. Hey, h put your light over here.
[18:57] Speaker 12: What have you at?
[18:59] Speaker 4: A gash in the back seat. It's a big boat,
[19:02] Speaker 4: you see it?
[19:02] Speaker 6: Yes, I see it.
[19:07] Speaker 4: Mexican blondes, quite a bunch of them.
[19:10] Speaker 10: M nice.
[19:13] Speaker 12: What what do you think this is?
[19:15] Speaker 4: Yeah?
[19:16] Speaker 10: Right here, My guess is blood and.
[19:22] Speaker 4: This was a wrench.
[19:25] Speaker 10: Might be what they did it with.
[19:26] Speaker 4: It's heavy enough and it's got the same kind of
[19:28] Speaker 4: rust eyes. Well let's take him not so fast.
[19:31] Speaker 10: Now.
[19:32] Speaker 3: Suppose they say they never met your friend Breeden, know
[19:36] Speaker 3: nothing about.
[19:36] Speaker 6: Him, need proof?
[19:38] Speaker 12: Just what do you have in mind?
[19:39] Speaker 3: You know those guys pretty well, know their businessminger, the
[19:42] Speaker 3: way they operate. Can't you think of some way of
[19:44] Speaker 3: going in there doing a little fast talk about.
[19:46] Speaker 6: Him by do?
[19:47] Speaker 4: It's not a bad story, not bad at all.
[19:52] Speaker 12: Good luck.
[20:05] Speaker 4: Your name is the Styles, it is mister Styles. Oh
[20:09] Speaker 4: where's Bronson downstairs?
[20:11] Speaker 6: Who are you?
[20:11] Speaker 8: Well?
[20:11] Speaker 6: My name is Norton.
[20:12] Speaker 4: Didn't you hear about me? I was supposed to make
[20:14] Speaker 4: arrangements with just the Breeden for the delivery of twenty
[20:16] Speaker 4: one cases of stock a week in.
[20:18] Speaker 5: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, little Richie told me about you.
[20:22] Speaker 6: Ain't you the fella?
[20:24] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[20:24] Speaker 5: We met you on the road. What degree Valley? I
[20:27] Speaker 5: was sorry about that. We had to change our headquarters.
[20:30] Speaker 5: How'd you find it?
[20:32] Speaker 1: Like?
[20:32] Speaker 4: I've got a lot of money invested in my business,
[20:34] Speaker 4: A little tracking down if somebody never bothered me?
[20:37] Speaker 10: Okay, sit down.
[20:39] Speaker 4: What don't you get for a case of domestic stock?
[20:41] Speaker 8: Round?
[20:41] Speaker 6: You're bout one hundred and seventy dollars.
[20:44] Speaker 4: I'll take twelve cases a week if you're twenty dollars a.
[20:47] Speaker 10: Case, all right, who are you kidding?
[20:49] Speaker 6: Twenty dollars?
[20:50] Speaker 4: Oh, I'm quite serious, you say. I happen to know
[20:53] Speaker 4: that I can get it at twenty dollars a case.
[20:55] Speaker 5: Go on, peddle your papers somewhere else. The price is
[20:58] Speaker 5: one hundred and seventy.
[20:59] Speaker 4: I happen to know that you and Bronson and my
[21:01] Speaker 4: friend Breeden were driving in from California. I happen to
[21:04] Speaker 4: know that you're going to do a fight with him,
[21:05] Speaker 4: And I happen to know that you stole seventeen thousand
[21:07] Speaker 4: dollarsand coins from him. And there are stains in the
[21:10] Speaker 4: car right out in the back, and the wrench with
[21:12] Speaker 4: stains on it, and I don't think they're rustain you Now.
[21:14] Speaker 10: I'll take it easy, will you?
[21:16] Speaker 4: Look, we can do business. Say I've got another idea.
[21:22] Speaker 4: Why does it have to be Norton and Styles and Bronson?
[21:25] Speaker 4: Why can't it just be Norton and Styles?
[21:27] Speaker 10: What do you mean just you and me?
[21:29] Speaker 12: Come Ona?
[21:30] Speaker 4: Who did it the breeding? I mean, was it you
[21:32] Speaker 4: or maybe a friend downstairs? You know, if we come
[21:35] Speaker 4: to a deal, cutting something three ways is less than
[21:38] Speaker 4: cutting something in two yeah, that's just how it happened.
[21:41] Speaker 5: He did it, Bronson. I didn't want to kill him.
[21:43] Speaker 5: I just wanted to make a deal. But that Bronson,
[21:44] Speaker 5: he's got a temple like.
[21:45] Speaker 12: A wild man. Do you mean it? You and me?
[21:47] Speaker 12: Why not?
[21:48] Speaker 4: Cops are looking for a four guy.
[21:49] Speaker 10: Do you testify?
[21:50] Speaker 4: I testify and it's Norton and Styles.
[21:52] Speaker 10: I should have met you before and Style.
[21:55] Speaker 6: Now I ain't that pretty. And the cops need a
[21:57] Speaker 6: fall guy. Second, Bronson, I.
[21:59] Speaker 13: Was just yeah, maybe in set of a pall guy,
[22:01] Speaker 13: the cops will get a corpse, maybe two corps mister Bronson.
[22:04] Speaker 6: Yeah that's right, mister Bronson. Oh do you think you
[22:07] Speaker 6: are coming in here making deals?
[22:08] Speaker 12: Just a guy?
[22:09] Speaker 4: Ain't just like you are to make a book.
[22:10] Speaker 13: I'll look you shut up, two red sense, I'd knock
[22:13] Speaker 13: you right through the floor, your standing Norton and Stein.
[22:16] Speaker 4: I look, mister Bronson, you can't do business that way.
[22:19] Speaker 4: It can't be done corpses, two corpses, knocking people to
[22:23] Speaker 4: the floor. All I want is the best possible deal
[22:25] Speaker 4: I can get.
[22:25] Speaker 13: Where did you take this thing up from? You think
[22:27] Speaker 13: you can talk your way out of this. I heard
[22:29] Speaker 13: what you said. It was standing behind the door. I
[22:31] Speaker 13: don't know who you think you are or what makes
[22:33] Speaker 13: you so cocky.
[22:34] Speaker 4: What makes me so cocky, as you put it, is
[22:36] Speaker 4: what's out in the back. What's supposed to be out
[22:39] Speaker 4: in the back in the car seventeen thousand in Mexican
[22:43] Speaker 4: coins like the ones found near Breeden, stains on the
[22:46] Speaker 4: floor of the car, and a wrench out there stains
[22:48] Speaker 4: on that too.
[22:49] Speaker 13: Nobody saw no seventeen thousand dollars.
[22:51] Speaker 10: There's no stains, no wrench.
[22:52] Speaker 13: All I see is a wise guy who talks too
[22:54] Speaker 13: much by my money.
[22:56] Speaker 6: I smell cop, amateur cop.
[23:00] Speaker 11: Run around.
[23:01] Speaker 13: Maybe you've already done enough thinking maybe you want to
[23:04] Speaker 13: turn around too, I said.
[23:06] Speaker 4: Turn around, all right, all right, I was only he
[23:09] Speaker 4: was only looking for me.
[23:10] Speaker 6: Let's stand where we are, right where we are?
[23:12] Speaker 9: Hello, Nick, Oh, I know maybe we ought to make
[23:16] Speaker 9: it to you.
[23:18] Speaker 6: That's right, both of you. Now, let's go. Oh Nolan,
[23:25] Speaker 6: mm hmmm, give you a tip shift, don't try to
[23:30] Speaker 6: move into bootleg, not in your line.
[23:32] Speaker 4: That your style. You stick with the papers. Thanks, Nick,
[23:37] Speaker 4: I don't think I won't.
[23:49] Speaker 2: We read you That telegram from Nolan Bullock of the Tots,
[23:51] Speaker 2: Oklahoma Tribune.
[23:52] Speaker 4: Both men and to Night's Big Story, pleaded guilty the
[23:55] Speaker 4: second degree manslaughter, admitted killing Breden after he attacked them.
[23:59] Speaker 4: Both were sentenced ten years of hard labor at the
[24:01] Speaker 4: state penitentiary.
[24:02] Speaker 15: A galistair Oblahoma, and so ends another Big Story.
[24:14] Speaker 16: In order to protect the names of people actually involved
[24:16] Speaker 16: in the Night's authentic Big Story, the names of all
[24:19] Speaker 16: characters and the dramatization were changed, with the exception of
[24:22] Speaker 16: the newspaper reporter. M hmm, this is the United States
[25:12] Speaker 16: Armed Forces Radio Service, the Voice of Information and Education.
[26:30] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, since we didn't get any discussion of
[26:34] Speaker 1: the cast at all, let's go ahead and do that. First.
[26:38] Speaker 1: Nolan was played by Bob Reddick, and then also in
[26:44] Speaker 1: the cast were Abby Lewis, Grant Richards, Mandel Kramer, and
[26:48] Speaker 1: Bill Smith. So we get two future Johnny Dawlers for
[26:53] Speaker 1: the price of one. Now, I think most criminal relationships
[26:57] Speaker 1: are somewhat toxic, but I don't think anything beats the
[27:01] Speaker 1: dynamic when the smart one and the hothead are the
[27:06] Speaker 1: same person. Is what we saw here. I mean that
[27:09] Speaker 1: other guy was still trying to make a deal even
[27:12] Speaker 1: as the police were breaking in. Now, in terms of
[27:16] Speaker 1: the facts of the case. The Story behind the Big
[27:19] Speaker 1: Story or Stories Behind the Big Story states that this
[27:26] Speaker 1: were about a mysterious slain of a man near Clinton.
[27:30] Speaker 1: That's what the basis of the story, Clinton, Oklahoma occurred
[27:33] Speaker 1: in nineteen forty seven, and a summary is to be
[27:37] Speaker 1: available soon, but no real details on the real life
[27:45] Speaker 1: who's in what's even though doctor Joe Webb says the
[27:48] Speaker 1: story has been found and in this case, I'm a
[27:55] Speaker 1: little bit curious about whether the whole detail about Nolan
[28:01] Speaker 1: actually being a government agent was invented because it sounds
[28:07] Speaker 1: like the type of stuff you hear in fiction, because
[28:11] Speaker 1: it would be exceedingly rare for a reporter to actually
[28:14] Speaker 1: directly work for the police department. But then again, there's
[28:18] Speaker 1: not a whole lot of history on Oklahoma police practices
[28:24] Speaker 1: that's readily available on the internet. Now. One thing they
[28:28] Speaker 1: did find is that he actually walked with a lamp
[28:34] Speaker 1: as a result of getting beaten up while posing as
[28:38] Speaker 1: a college student trying to obtain a story. And so
[28:42] Speaker 1: while I can't get into details about the case, it
[28:45] Speaker 1: is safe to say that Nolan Bullock was the type
[28:48] Speaker 1: of man who was not afraid to take very serious
[28:51] Speaker 1: risks in order to get a story well, listener comments
[28:54] Speaker 1: and feedback, and we have a comment on the poison
[28:57] Speaker 1: pen murders from Jeffrey who writes pretty wax laws. Then
[29:01] Speaker 1: how can a non policeman confiscate a pistol tool from
[29:06] Speaker 1: a person's room. Well, legally, you wouldn't think they would
[29:10] Speaker 1: be able to. And generally, when it comes to these
[29:13] Speaker 1: sort of details from the Big Story, it comes down
[29:17] Speaker 1: to one of two things. Number One, there were a
[29:21] Speaker 1: lot of wild days of reporters doing things that they
[29:27] Speaker 1: would not do and would not get away with today
[29:30] Speaker 1: because of lax or enforcement and print journalism as a
[29:34] Speaker 1: sort of frontier and other details were just invented by
[29:38] Speaker 1: the Big Story writers And unfortunately I can't say whitch
[29:42] Speaker 1: with that particular incident. Well, now it is time to think.

[30:57] Speaker 9: too long ago.
[30:58] Speaker 8: Huh.
[31:00] Speaker 9: Other things?
[31:01] Speaker 8: This found this crumpled mask in his pocket. Take a
[31:05] Speaker 8: look at his clothes, really raggy, huh. Underneath he's wearing
[31:09] Speaker 8: silk underwear. You're taking prints last night, soon as they
[31:12] Speaker 8: came in code numbers sent to Washington right away.
[31:14] Speaker 9: You say the emergency hospital sent them over.
[31:17] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[31:17] Speaker 8: They staggered in there, practically blind from the bumbooze, screaming.
[31:22] Speaker 8: We couldn't help him, Danny, they were too far gone.
[31:24] Speaker 9: They have the liquor on them. No, there's allably to
[31:25] Speaker 9: be a lot more of it someplace, My gum, that's
[31:28] Speaker 9: all alcohol and peace, juice and beating oil. How come you've.
[31:32] Speaker 8: Seen him brought in after the strained paint through a
[31:34] Speaker 8: piece of bread.
[31:35] Speaker 9: I've seen him get right about this one, Maga man.
[31:41] Speaker 9: He looks too patiently upbut that's why he looks out
[31:44] Speaker 9: of place.
