[2:40] Speaker 4: a big league ball in this town, mister Templar, I
[2:43] Speaker 4: see you think we'll ever get big league ball?
[2:45] Speaker 3: Mister Template.
[2:47] Speaker 5: You can't quiet today, mister Temple. My silence, friend, Louis
[2:50] Speaker 5: is purely comparative.
[2:52] Speaker 4: Oh well, since you're not feeling what, it's good you're
[2:55] Speaker 4: taking the afternoon of been reading about that father and
[2:58] Speaker 4: some of the Bruce Socks left in PHILM.
[3:00] Speaker 5: Miller there are other interesting suppose to be the first
[3:02] Speaker 5: time in baseball father and son have played on the
[3:05] Speaker 5: same team.
[3:05] Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, the old man just down from the majors
[3:08] Speaker 4: and the kid on his way up, all lefty was
[3:11] Speaker 4: great to his day though, and the kid will be
[3:13] Speaker 4: great too.
[3:13] Speaker 5: They both playing today the way neither one.
[3:16] Speaker 4: Bill ain't do the fish till tomorrow, and the old
[3:18] Speaker 4: man's got a game.
[3:18] Speaker 3: Leg won't even be a uniform.
[3:20] Speaker 4: That's what goes first in baseball. Miss the Temple of
[3:23] Speaker 4: the legs and my line of work. I know, I know,
[3:27] Speaker 4: mister Temple.
[3:28] Speaker 3: You knows something funny. This rumors out about the Blue Socks.
[3:30] Speaker 5: What kind of room he is doing?
[3:32] Speaker 4: The rumors say the Socks are gonna do business lose
[3:35] Speaker 4: a ball game that maybe they should win.
[3:37] Speaker 5: Nine tense Lewis, baseball is honest. You know that.
[3:39] Speaker 3: Maybe it's so, but it's still gotta be played by humans.
[3:42] Speaker 5: You'd better step on it, my cinecal friend, we're.
[3:44] Speaker 4: Late, sure, mister Templar. Most likely nothing to the rumors anyway.
[3:49] Speaker 4: You know how it is driving a cab, you pick
[3:51] Speaker 4: up all sorts of things. Me, you don't do no
[3:54] Speaker 4: good to pick nothing up. I'm married.
[3:56] Speaker 3: Hey, yeah, ahead, you head that, mister Templar. I said me,
[4:00] Speaker 3: it don't do no good to pick nothing up.
[4:03] Speaker 5: I heard, Louis, I heard pretty funny. Huh, Louis, take
[4:07] Speaker 5: me out to the ballgame here, and you're right.
[4:27] Speaker 6: The Hello, Lefty, thanks for coming, Saint, Sit down, sit up, dang,
[4:31] Speaker 6: I hope I'm not late.
[4:32] Speaker 7: No, the game won't start for another ten minutes.
[4:34] Speaker 5: How how's the leg, Lefty?
[4:36] Speaker 7: That's improving, Saint?
[4:37] Speaker 5: I was crime. It stays about the same, always with it.
[4:40] Speaker 7: Yeah, that it is that it is.
[4:42] Speaker 5: Blue Stock's going to win today.
[4:43] Speaker 6: You know something, Saint, I don't much care. Oh, don't
[4:46] Speaker 6: get me wrong. When I'm in there myself, I played
[4:49] Speaker 6: a win, so that's the only way I know. And
[4:51] Speaker 6: after the majors, you don't get very excited over the
[4:53] Speaker 6: blue socks.
[4:54] Speaker 5: I guess not now.
[4:55] Speaker 7: I'm just playing out the string. What comes after that?
[4:57] Speaker 5: I don't know.
[4:58] Speaker 6: I manage this job, no chance. I was too busy
[5:01] Speaker 6: spending my money. Well, the smart boys were learning the
[5:04] Speaker 6: inside of the game. But I had fun. I guess,
[5:07] Speaker 6: did you, Nah, Saint, There's only one thing in baseball
[5:12] Speaker 6: I care about. There's only one thing in the world
[5:14] Speaker 6: I care about. He's sitting across the field and the
[5:16] Speaker 6: dugout wearing number thirty three. My son, Mmm, I hear
[5:20] Speaker 6: Phil is a great picture, Lefty. Hey, he's good. He'll
[5:22] Speaker 6: be great he's going up next year. Maybe this heah,
[5:27] Speaker 6: I can look at him through the binoculars. M.
[5:30] Speaker 5: Yeah, he looks like you, lefty.
[5:33] Speaker 6: You really think so, Saint. I'm worried sick about him.
[5:38] Speaker 6: That's why I asked you. I know, that's why I'm here.
[5:40] Speaker 6: What are you worried about it? And I think they're
[5:42] Speaker 6: after him, Saint. The crowd with the dirty money's after him.
[5:46] Speaker 6: I never handle any dirty money, but I've been around
[5:48] Speaker 6: it and I can smell it.
[5:50] Speaker 5: I can smell it. Now, what does Phil say? Do
[5:51] Speaker 5: you talk to him?
[5:53] Speaker 7: I can't talk to him.
[5:55] Speaker 6: Maybe you've read in the papers about our wonderful father
[5:57] Speaker 6: and son relationship.
[5:58] Speaker 5: Uh, the kid hates me? How come left?
[6:02] Speaker 6: And he was brought up by his mother and he
[6:04] Speaker 6: was brought up to hate me. I got out a
[6:06] Speaker 6: horse from her when the kid was two years old.
[6:09] Speaker 7: I gave her a raw deal.
[6:11] Speaker 5: He should hate me. You say you smell dirty money?
[6:14] Speaker 5: Do you have anything else to go on?
[6:16] Speaker 6: Left ing rumors and a girl? No, I take that back,
[6:19] Speaker 6: a woman. Take another look through the glasses, Saint. She's
[6:23] Speaker 6: sitting in the box behind Phil, bending over to talk
[6:25] Speaker 6: to him. She's there every day.
[6:27] Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, indeed, perhaps I should have taken that baseball.
[6:31] Speaker 5: That's just it.
[6:33] Speaker 6: There's a woman who's got what she has go for
[6:34] Speaker 6: a twenty one year old kid just because he plays
[6:36] Speaker 6: baseball good ordinarily now, but she's got Phil hooked so
[6:40] Speaker 6: hard and so deep.
[6:41] Speaker 7: I heard all over for her. He thinks it's romance.
[6:43] Speaker 5: What do you think it is?
[6:45] Speaker 7: I don't know, not exactly, Saint. Could you could you
[6:49] Speaker 7: see if you could find out?
[6:50] Speaker 5: I can try what's her name lefting.
[6:52] Speaker 6: Diane Courtney. She's staying at the Regent, same hotel the
[6:55] Speaker 6: ball club puts up at. I happen to hear the
[6:58] Speaker 6: kid making a cocktail date with her there for six
[7:00] Speaker 6: this evening.
[7:01] Speaker 5: Good you see, if you can get him delayed a
[7:03] Speaker 5: few minutes.
[7:04] Speaker 6: I will find out what she's trying to do. SAT,
[7:07] Speaker 6: find out who's in back of her. If they spoil
[7:10] Speaker 6: that kid, they won't, they won't let thanks Sat. And
[7:14] Speaker 6: there's anything I can never do.
[7:15] Speaker 5: No worry about it. In fact, I'm looking forward to
[7:17] Speaker 5: meeting Mss Courtney. I'm sure we'll have a lot in
[7:20] Speaker 5: common baseball and well we'll find something. Do you mind
[7:39] Speaker 5: if I sit down here? The bar seems to be
[7:42] Speaker 5: rather crowded is crowded. As matter of fact, he was
[7:45] Speaker 5: crowded the minute you walked in.
[7:48] Speaker 8: But I am waiting for someone.
[7:50] Speaker 5: He might be late.
[7:51] Speaker 8: That's very true.
[7:53] Speaker 5: He won't be. What are we drinking? Martini?
[7:55] Speaker 8: You say?
[7:55] Speaker 5: So? Wait there too, martinis extra dry. I see that
[8:00] Speaker 5: you're a devitee of the national past time.
[8:02] Speaker 8: That could very well be which national pastime?
[8:07] Speaker 9: I saw you at the ball game today, Yes, I
[8:09] Speaker 9: go every day. Business is pleasure's that's supposed to me.
[8:12] Speaker 9: Baseball is a business for some Oh, thank you, wad.
[8:18] Speaker 9: Let's drink to pleasure.
[8:20] Speaker 8: Let's just drink. I found that you run out of
[8:22] Speaker 8: tels long before you run out of drink.
[8:25] Speaker 5: Comment on human frail thing, Well, what is.
[8:29] Speaker 8: It you want? Friends?
[8:31] Speaker 5: I appreciate your frankness. It's one of your concealed assets.
[8:35] Speaker 5: I'd like some answers about Phil Miller?
[8:37] Speaker 8: Who are you?
[8:38] Speaker 5: Don't you know? No, I'm the man who wants the
[8:40] Speaker 5: answers about Phil Miller? Should I start asking questions? Bill?
[8:44] Speaker 10: Just Kim and we can't talk now, come up to
[8:46] Speaker 10: my room in fifteen minutes. Dat A wait, Well I
[8:49] Speaker 10: need help, believe me, I need.

[8:53] Speaker 8: My friend's just leaving phil and I don't care for
[8:56] Speaker 8: your tongue.
[8:57] Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sorry, Diana, I just thought that.
[8:59] Speaker 6: Well.
[9:00] Speaker 8: Remember I don't care for the jealousy routine. You're too
[9:03] Speaker 8: young for it.
[9:04] Speaker 5: Yeah, okay, well it's been charming. But I have a
[9:07] Speaker 5: cab waiting start. I'll see you again, definitely, yes, definitely
[9:11] Speaker 5: die Are you a capture? Oh, thank you, I have
[9:28] Speaker 5: one waiting here. He is, Wait till mister, no way, Louis,

[9:41] Speaker 5: I'm not absolutely convinced about the purity of the lady's intentions.
[9:45] Speaker 5: This is a cause for complaint, you misinterpret Come up
[9:48] Speaker 5: the room eight oh w eight ten minutes or so
[9:50] Speaker 5: after I go up and knock on the door. I
[9:53] Speaker 5: get you. But if I shouldn't happen to meet a
[9:55] Speaker 5: cab at that particular time, come ahead of you.
[9:57] Speaker 3: There's times in everybody's life when the least things he
[10:00] Speaker 3: means a tax like.
[10:18] Speaker 5: You know, seeks sweet.
[10:25] Speaker 8: Oh, come in, come in quickly. Someone makes you.
[10:28] Speaker 11: Has already seen him. Frank, go ahead, and Jack and
[10:31] Speaker 11: I'm right behind you with something that resents any quick moves.
[10:34] Speaker 12: Sneak up behind people pretty quietly. Frank used to be
[10:37] Speaker 12: in a girl guide. Shut the door down, Shut it. Oh,
[10:44] Speaker 12: my nosey friend here and me has business.
[10:47] Speaker 8: I didn't tell the saint anything, Frank.
[10:48] Speaker 5: I just boss.
[10:49] Speaker 11: Don't like nosy guys like the Saint. I don't like
[10:52] Speaker 11: nosy guys like the Saint.
[10:54] Speaker 8: Let him alone, Frank, You what good beating him up to.
[10:56] Speaker 11: The bosses orders? Besides, my analyst tells me beat enough
[11:00] Speaker 11: nosy guys.
[11:01] Speaker 5: I don't like.
[11:01] Speaker 11: It's a good way of working up my aggressions.
[11:04] Speaker 5: You're analyst. What's the matter? I can't get analyzed? What
[11:07] Speaker 5: does your analyst say about your carrying a gun? Didn't
[11:10] Speaker 5: he point out this is an artificial property or otherwise
[11:12] Speaker 5: charming personality?
[11:16] Speaker 11: My analyst says, I shouldn't get insulted. It remarks by neurotics.
[11:19] Speaker 11: You think I'm a neurotic. If you ain't, no, Jackie
[11:22] Speaker 11: will be when I finished. Don't fall down yet, I
[11:26] Speaker 11: got four for.
[11:30] Speaker 5: How do you want? Okay? Don it?
[11:40] Speaker 11: I shouldn't have gotten mad, my analyst says, I shouldn't
[11:44] Speaker 11: let my emotions color my business life, mister.
[12:00] Speaker 5: Temple, mister Templar, Oh, oh, Louis, mister Temple, you all right?
[12:06] Speaker 5: Should I call a doctor? I'm all right? I guess
[12:12] Speaker 5: what happened, mister Templar. I knocked on the door, just
[12:15] Speaker 5: like you said. When nobody answered, I come in. You
[12:17] Speaker 5: was on the floor. You're still on the floor, and
[12:19] Speaker 5: I think i'll stay here. Oh, got myself worked over,
[12:23] Speaker 5: Louis by psychoanalytical muscle boy. Oh, I should give you
[12:27] Speaker 5: some beautiful lumps. Yeah, real neat, professional job. Mhm. What's
[12:34] Speaker 5: this business caught in your chest? George? No, let's see. Huh,
[12:39] Speaker 5: thank you, mister put it there. This is part of
[12:41] Speaker 5: the warning. I guess what's you say? It says the fixer,
[12:46] Speaker 5: I fix anything. Hmm. What you'd call modest is he?
[12:50] Speaker 5: But fixes rarely are. I think we better have a
[12:53] Speaker 5: doctor spray you with some of cure crome. No, Louis,
[12:56] Speaker 5: I'm going to be too busy doing what sleeping? Hello shaint,
[13:18] Speaker 5: This is Lefty Miller. Oh, hello, Lefty, what time is it?
[13:21] Speaker 5: At midnight? He was sleep I went to bed early night,
[13:24] Speaker 5: had a rather trying evening.
[13:26] Speaker 6: Look I've been finding out things, things about the crowd
[13:29] Speaker 6: with the dirty money, and who the head of it is.
[13:31] Speaker 5: You mean, who the fixer is?
[13:32] Speaker 6: Yeah, I found out what they're.
[13:33] Speaker 7: Trying to get from the kid from Phil. Can you
[13:36] Speaker 7: meet me here at the hotel?
[13:37] Speaker 5: Half an hour? Good?
[13:38] Speaker 13: In the bar.
[13:39] Speaker 7: I'm going after some more dope.
[13:40] Speaker 5: Now you better wait until I get there. Lefty, their
[13:42] Speaker 5: rough boys, I.
[13:43] Speaker 7: Know, but don't worry about me. See you in half
[13:46] Speaker 7: an hour.
[13:56] Speaker 5: A waiter another Johnny Walker over eyes? Please?
[13:59] Speaker 14: Yes, Look you're Simon Temple, aren't you? When they call
[14:02] Speaker 14: a saint? Sit down, Phil, I'm not sitting down. Got
[14:04] Speaker 14: some things to tell you. I've heard that you've been
[14:07] Speaker 14: asking questions about me, and I can guess who sent you.
[14:10] Speaker 5: It was my father. Look, isn't it kind of late
[14:12] Speaker 5: for you? Phil? You're supposed to pitch Tom. I don't
[14:14] Speaker 5: need anybody to run my life for me, You or
[14:16] Speaker 5: my father either.
[14:18] Speaker 14: Where is he when I was to meet him here?
[14:19] Speaker 14: But he hasn't shown up yet? Most likely up in
[14:21] Speaker 14: his room. All right, come on, let's go up and
[14:23] Speaker 14: see him. I want to straighten you both out together.
[14:25] Speaker 5: You know what Roomy's in? Sure? Nine o' eight right.
[14:28] Speaker 5: How do you still a waiter? Yes, hold that drink
[14:32] Speaker 5: for me. I'll be back for it sooner or later. Hey, Dad,
[14:47] Speaker 5: open up, I want to talk to you. It doesn't
[14:49] Speaker 5: look like your father is in track the door? What's open?
[14:55] Speaker 5: What's but there's this dad? Look? I told you not
[15:03] Speaker 5: to look. He shot himself? Why why he did? Feeling
[15:06] Speaker 5: with a gun in his hand, but he didn't pull
[15:08] Speaker 5: the trigger. What are you trying to prove? Who did?
[15:25] Speaker 5: What's oil? Mister Temple? A Region Hotel, Louis in Good morning?
[15:28] Speaker 5: Good morning? Say I read in the papers this morning
[15:31] Speaker 5: about Lefty Miller.
[15:32] Speaker 3: Oh Tom, why do you think he did it?
[15:34] Speaker 5: Mister Temple? He didn't. The police can buy the suicide
[15:37] Speaker 5: theory for the time being. But it was murdered, Louis.
[15:40] Speaker 5: A friend of mine was murdered last night, and today
[15:43] Speaker 5: things are going to be done about it. What are
[15:45] Speaker 5: you going to do with the region? I'm going back
[15:47] Speaker 5: to the Young Ladies room where I had such an
[15:49] Speaker 5: interesting time last evening. This time I better go with you.
[15:53] Speaker 5: Perhaps you'd better, Louis, and I'm hiring you for the
[15:55] Speaker 5: whole afternoon. We've got a lot of ground to cover.
[16:00] Speaker 4: It was a great ball player, mister Templar, seen him
[16:03] Speaker 4: in the world, serious one said, Yankee Stadium.
[16:05] Speaker 5: Hard to believe he's dead. A man can be killed
[16:08] Speaker 5: in a lot of ways, Louis. He can be killed faster,
[16:10] Speaker 5: or he can be killed through what happens to his son.
[16:14] Speaker 5: I'm glad at least that didn't happen to the lefty.
[16:31] Speaker 5: You sure nobody isn't he called on the house phone
[16:34] Speaker 5: before we came up. I think this key will fit.
[16:38] Speaker 5: How did you get a key? I remember to make
[16:40] Speaker 5: an impression of the lock after that beating last evening.
[16:43] Speaker 5: There we're in nobody here, all right? Shut the door, Louis,
[16:50] Speaker 5: and lock it. Okay, what are you looking for, mister Templar?
[16:57] Speaker 5: The truth, Louis is my friend Philip Marlo would say
[17:00] Speaker 5: crime detection is an adventure in search of the hidden truth.
[17:04] Speaker 3: I'm going to find the hidden truth looking out that
[17:06] Speaker 3: window and the fire escape.
[17:07] Speaker 5: Perhaps lewis right, it's a Templar. Somebody's at the door, Louis.
[17:12] Speaker 5: I'll handle this if I need help, you'll need help.
[17:14] Speaker 5: We're in trouble. Good morning, miss Courtney.
[17:19] Speaker 8: What are you doing?
[17:20] Speaker 5: I'm in Diane, It's Courtney, my good friend. Louis, Oh
[17:23] Speaker 5: charmed you want? I should leave, mister Temple now, we'll
[17:27] Speaker 5: both be leaving in a minute, Louis. Just as soon
[17:29] Speaker 5: as we asked Miss Courtney some questions. She probably won't
[17:32] Speaker 5: answer my questions, like who killed Lefty Miller?
[17:35] Speaker 8: I don't know. I thought it was suicide.
[17:39] Speaker 5: Who's the fixer, Diane?
[17:40] Speaker 8: I can't tell you why. I'm afraid, Saint, if you
[17:45] Speaker 8: believe me, if you'd help me, Why.
[17:46] Speaker 5: Are you working on Phil Miller to throw a ball game?
[17:48] Speaker 8: Why I can't tell you that.
[17:52] Speaker 3: Frightened.
[17:52] Speaker 5: I don't care how frightened you are. Man's been killed.
[17:54] Speaker 5: Why I can't? I'm afraid, lady's afraid. Come on, Louis,
[17:58] Speaker 5: let's go back to the ballpark and see if we
[18:00] Speaker 5: can throw a few curves. Mister Bush, as manager of
[18:15] Speaker 5: the Blues tax, you must have known Lefty Miller fairly well,
[18:20] Speaker 5: not well.
[18:21] Speaker 15: No, I manage the team, but you don't manage an
[18:24] Speaker 15: old pro like Lefty. You just tell him what time
[18:26] Speaker 15: the game is and he does the red. Yes, from
[18:30] Speaker 15: what I saw of him, No, he was a good guy.
[18:35] Speaker 15: I'm sorry I was still taking it. That's hard to
[18:37] Speaker 15: tell about kids.
[18:39] Speaker 5: He didn't.
[18:39] Speaker 15: Lefty weren't close. Maybe you knew that, Yes, knew that,
[18:43] Speaker 15: but it's hard to tell just how he was taking it.
[18:46] Speaker 15: And I says, turned the pitch, and I told him,
[18:48] Speaker 15: of course i'd start somebody else, but no, he's going
[18:50] Speaker 15: to pitch tonight. Insisted on it, said he had it,
[18:54] Speaker 15: so you'll pitch.
[18:55] Speaker 5: You think he should. He's the best we.
[18:58] Speaker 15: Got, and I might get a phone call tomorrow telling
[19:01] Speaker 15: me he's sold to the major leagues. Anytime he wants
[19:04] Speaker 15: to pitch.
[19:04] Speaker 5: You'll pitch, mister Bush. Have you heard any rumors about
[19:09] Speaker 5: a fix on your ball? Lin or, mister Templar. There's
[19:11] Speaker 5: always rumors around any kind of sport. I've never been
[19:15] Speaker 5: in a phony ball game, and as far as I know,
[19:17] Speaker 5: I've never seen one, so I don't listen to rumor. Thanks,
[19:21] Speaker 5: mister Bush, and good luck tonight to you and Phil
[19:25] Speaker 5: both well to Eno, mister Templar. I want to go
[19:40] Speaker 5: see a bookmaker, Louis Samus Spender.
[19:43] Speaker 4: You know, I'm sure I know they're just Booky and
[19:45] Speaker 4: Tom place down on State Street, only a block or
[19:47] Speaker 4: two down the street.
[19:49] Speaker 5: That's something good in Hollywood. Pot, No, Louise, you want
[19:53] Speaker 5: something good. Thanks, but no, this is different. I did
[19:56] Speaker 5: a favorite for Sam once he might be able to
[19:57] Speaker 5: return it. Sham Rey tins anything? What money?
[20:01] Speaker 3: One time? I had a three horse polly going against him.
[20:04] Speaker 5: Hoist to come in? The sight is leading into the stoy.
[20:06] Speaker 5: Isn't this the play?
[20:08] Speaker 13: Oh?
[20:08] Speaker 5: Yeah, you're sure? Wait for me here, Lloyd won't be long, sure,
[20:13] Speaker 5: mister Temple, Hello, Samn house.
[20:19] Speaker 16: Business, Simon Temple, are glad to see you.
[20:21] Speaker 5: What can I do for your information? Which you're going?
[20:24] Speaker 5: No further than Simon Temple. We in business to say,
[20:26] Speaker 5: do you handle any baseball money? To him?
[20:28] Speaker 3: Nah?
[20:29] Speaker 16: In the East's big business. It's all bet on the
[20:31] Speaker 16: major leagues out peanuts.
[20:33] Speaker 5: Have you handled or heard of any bets lately on
[20:35] Speaker 5: the Blue Socks or against him? Against him?
[20:37] Speaker 8: Yeah?
[20:38] Speaker 5: On yesterday? Funny thing too. Get to tell me about it?
[20:41] Speaker 16: And sure a big creep comes in with two hundred
[20:44] Speaker 16: dollars to bet against the Socks in the game tonight
[20:46] Speaker 16: and don't like the smell of it.
[20:47] Speaker 5: Nah, I tell him. Nah.
[20:49] Speaker 16: Then the creep tells me what's wrong with me is
[20:51] Speaker 16: that I had any emotionally insecured childhood? Honest to go on?
[20:56] Speaker 16: Then he does a funny thing. He give me an
[20:58] Speaker 16: extra two hundred pay you up if you win the bet.
[21:02] Speaker 16: Imagine that, And if the Socks win, I get to
[21:05] Speaker 16: keep the home four hundred.
[21:07] Speaker 5: The guy's nuts. I can't lose. The best he can
[21:10] Speaker 5: do is break even. Where's the payoff? Sam? If the
[21:12] Speaker 5: Socks lose.
[21:14] Speaker 7: In room eight and eight the region tonight after the game,
[21:17] Speaker 7: do you get it?
[21:18] Speaker 8: Sing?
[21:19] Speaker 5: I'm beginning to bestor Miller was right. Dirty money has
[21:22] Speaker 5: a smell to it, and I'm beginning to smell it.
[21:25] Speaker 5: Thanks Sam, anytime sink, see you soon, maybe tonight tonight.
[21:29] Speaker 5: I hope so sink nothing personal, Sam, but I hope not.
[21:46] Speaker 3: What is it.
[21:49] Speaker 5: Good evening, Diane?
[21:50] Speaker 11: Well, it's all friend, Jack, Harry, Franky?
[21:54] Speaker 5: What is this room?
[21:55] Speaker 8: Mister Templer? You're a home away from home.
[21:58] Speaker 5: Let me throw the bum out, Frankie, your aggressions is.
[22:01] Speaker 10: Showing anything in particular you wanted say? Frankie and I
[22:04] Speaker 10: are busy, see that busy packing?
[22:06] Speaker 5: Too busy to go to the ball game tonight? Did
[22:08] Speaker 5: you know beforehand how it would come out? Let me
[22:11] Speaker 5: trot a bum out.
[22:12] Speaker 10: I hate schizophrenics, but he looks like such an interesting one. Frankie,
[22:16] Speaker 10: and he's handsome too.
[22:17] Speaker 5: Right, Dane, you're not as frightened as you wear. Well,
[22:20] Speaker 5: it's all right. I won't tell the boy.
[22:22] Speaker 11: Jack, you better get out of here. It ain't healthy.
[22:25] Speaker 11: What's your trouble. You got a compulsion or something.
[22:28] Speaker 5: No, it's just that when I start out on something,
[22:30] Speaker 5: I like to be in on the payoff, and tonight's
[22:32] Speaker 5: the payoff. The game should be over by now, and
[22:34] Speaker 5: the people will be arriving. I'll be the host of
[22:37] Speaker 5: our little party. You'll be hosts for a party of
[22:40] Speaker 5: one in a wood box. Jack, Diane shle liked you,
[22:44] Speaker 5: Dian it's a kid.
[22:46] Speaker 7: Don't let him in.
[22:46] Speaker 8: Frankie, come in, Phil, Hello.
[22:49] Speaker 5: Sweetie, Hello Diane. Frankie. Yeah, Hellom, it's Templar. I love him.
[22:54] Speaker 8: Ball game over, honey, Yeah, it's over. How you feel dirty?
[22:59] Speaker 5: Oh?
[22:59] Speaker 10: I don't feel bad about it, sweety. In a week
[23:01] Speaker 10: or two, you'll forget all about it.
[23:02] Speaker 5: Sit down, Phil, I've taken over the party. Let's all
[23:05] Speaker 5: find out what games we've been playing. Diana, I'm getting
[23:08] Speaker 5: an awful frustration listening to him. Let him talk, Thank you, Phil, Yes,
[23:13] Speaker 5: mister Templar, What line did Diane? Use to get you
[23:15] Speaker 5: to throw the game tonight. The fixer had something on her.
[23:18] Speaker 5: She was afraid of him. Something would happened to her
[23:20] Speaker 5: if you didn't do as he wanted. And it doesn't matter,
[23:24] Speaker 5: you know the real reasons. Go on tell him Jack,
[23:27] Speaker 5: I will, Frankie. It was a trap for you, Phil.
[23:31] Speaker 5: This outfit is big and smart. They're willing to make
[23:34] Speaker 5: an investment and wait a while to cash in. It's
[23:37] Speaker 5: too tough to get next to a major league player.
[23:39] Speaker 5: You'll be up there this year or next, and when
[23:41] Speaker 5: you get there, you'll do what the fixer tells you,
[23:43] Speaker 5: because there's a club over your head. Yeah, yeah, a
[23:47] Speaker 5: certain payoff. You took in a hotel room at the
[23:49] Speaker 5: region for throwing a game with a Blue Sox. You
[23:52] Speaker 5: understand that. I understand your father found out about it.
[23:56] Speaker 5: He had the room right over this one nine o eight,
[23:59] Speaker 5: and he listened on the I escape. He was seen
[24:01] Speaker 5: from in here and he was killed. Then they took
[24:04] Speaker 5: him back up the fire escape to his room and
[24:06] Speaker 5: rigged the suicide, but they forgot to wash all the
[24:09] Speaker 5: blood off the iron outside this window.
[24:11] Speaker 11: You're gonna listen to him, kid, He's an erotic, aane
[24:14] Speaker 11: aren't you gonna say something.
[24:15] Speaker 8: I didn't have anything to do with it, honey. It
[24:18] Speaker 8: was the fixer who did it.
[24:19] Speaker 5: Yeah. I believed in the fixer too at first, Diane,
[24:22] Speaker 5: until I came to your room the first time down
[24:24] Speaker 5: the bar. You said you didn't know me up here.
[24:26] Speaker 5: You told Frankie I was the saint. He made other
[24:29] Speaker 5: lips tonight. So I know who the fixer is.
[24:31] Speaker 3: Who is he?
[24:32] Speaker 5: You mean? Who is she? Fixer is a very beautiful woman, Diane.
[24:36] Speaker 5: The fixer is you? What is this a filibuster? A son?
[24:40] Speaker 8: Let's assume you're right, mister Templer. Where does it get you?
[24:43] Speaker 8: Where does a change thing?
[24:44] Speaker 5: I'm turning you over to the police, and Frankie can
[24:47] Speaker 5: highly shoot both Phil and myself.
[24:48] Speaker 10: You won't have to, as you. Yeah, you underestimate me, Saint.
[24:52] Speaker 10: We should have had more time alone together. Phil will
[24:55] Speaker 10: do whatever I tell him in spite of what's happened,
[24:58] Speaker 10: won't you, sweetie?
[24:59] Speaker 5: Will? Diane?
[25:02] Speaker 8: I made sure of Phil, Saint. I made sure of
[25:04] Speaker 8: him first.
[25:06] Speaker 10: You'll crawl on his hands and knees if I tell
[25:08] Speaker 10: him to, because if he doesn't, I might stop being
[25:10] Speaker 10: nice to him, and he couldn't.
[25:12] Speaker 5: Stand that you should have thought of that, Saint.
[25:16] Speaker 10: He got a metal block or something finished with mister Temple. Frank,
[25:19] Speaker 10: we've got to finish packing this gun.
[25:21] Speaker 5: Says, Get over to the windows, Saint.
[25:24] Speaker 11: This time there won't be no blood and the fire
[25:26] Speaker 11: escape just a lot on the sidewalk.
[25:29] Speaker 5: Pretty messy that way, Frankie, your subconscious will hate you.
[25:32] Speaker 5: I won't look down. Oh you're going over to the window.
[25:37] Speaker 11: Quiet, filter it out and stand back, kid, I ain't
[25:39] Speaker 11: playing with the stinging.
[25:44] Speaker 7: Give me that.
[25:45] Speaker 5: Thank you. I'll bring your wrist you think my joannalist
[25:49] Speaker 5: would say. And this makes this even look so? How
[25:56] Speaker 5: how bad? Is it? Not bad? My arm but not
[26:01] Speaker 5: my pitching on? Good? Why Diane stand still? Better? Go
[26:07] Speaker 5: for the police, Phil, Can you make it? Yeah? I
[26:09] Speaker 5: can make it? And Phil thanks? But she did make
[26:13] Speaker 5: up for the game. We'll figure out that later. About Dad, Saint,
[26:17] Speaker 5: he did all he could to protect you, Phil. Yeah,
[26:19] Speaker 5: he did like me then more than anything else. He
[26:22] Speaker 5: told me you better leave. I want you out of here.
[26:26] Speaker 5: Before that book he shows up to pay off mister Templar,
[26:29] Speaker 5: He won't be showing up.
[26:31] Speaker 11: I didn't lose the game tonight, tell me more, Phil,
[26:34] Speaker 11: I pitched a three hit shut out.
[26:37] Speaker 5: I figured it was the least I could do for Lefty.
[26:52] Speaker 5: The kid's gonna be all right, mister Temple, there will
[26:55] Speaker 5: be all right, definitely.
[26:57] Speaker 3: You know I can't blame.
[26:58] Speaker 5: Him for getting tangled up with that Diane.
[27:00] Speaker 3: Now there is real age in the woodstump.
[27:02] Speaker 5: She will be quite as attractive when she gets out Lowie.
[27:05] Speaker 5: Twenty years does something to a woman.
[27:07] Speaker 4: Should have seen what had done to my wife if
[27:09] Speaker 4: she was no prize to begin with. What do you
[27:12] Speaker 4: think was wrong with Diane, mister Templan emotionally insecure.
[27:15] Speaker 5: Childhood you've been talking to Frankie. I think Diane felt
[27:19] Speaker 5: an urge to corrupt Loie, to feel power, revenge, perhaps
[27:24] Speaker 5: for something hidden in her past. It might have been
[27:26] Speaker 5: her childhood, might have been society. So now society exacts
[27:31] Speaker 5: further told twenty years, I feel like a drink. Louis
[27:37] Speaker 5: Well till, mister Templar back to the Regent. I've got
[27:39] Speaker 5: a Scott's waiting for me at the bar.
[27:54] Speaker 2: You have been listening to another transcribed adventure of the
[27:57] Speaker 2: Saint the robin Hood of modern crime, and all here
[28:00] Speaker 2: is our star bencent Price.
[28:02] Speaker 5: Ladies and gentlemen, the most priceless gift which a community
[28:05] Speaker 5: can give its children is a fine education. Here in America,
[28:10] Speaker 5: your parents have been able to take that education pretty well,
[28:13] Speaker 5: for granted, but that won't be true of the future
[28:16] Speaker 5: unless we plan now to cope with the educational problems
[28:19] Speaker 5: of the future. There are going to be lots of them.
[28:22] Speaker 5: We know that for sure. Because of the increased birth
[28:25] Speaker 5: rate during and since the war, an extra seven million
[28:29] Speaker 5: children are going to be enrolling in our public schools,
[28:32] Speaker 5: and the way things stand, our schools just aren't ready
[28:35] Speaker 5: to handle them. The problem varies from district to district,
[28:40] Speaker 5: but it's always a problem of shortages. In some localities
[28:43] Speaker 5: there aren't enough class rooms and in others not enough
[28:46] Speaker 5: books and equipment, and overall we're suffering from a shortage
[28:50] Speaker 5: of teachers. In order to meet the challenge and make
[28:53] Speaker 5: sure that our youngsters will get the education they deserve,
[28:57] Speaker 5: we'll have to lay down an educational blueprint for the
[28:59] Speaker 5: years ahead. Our local school boards are doing that right now,
[29:03] Speaker 5: but they can't do it alone. They need everyone's efforts
[29:07] Speaker 5: to build a stronger educational system. If you wish to help,
[29:11] Speaker 5: simply contact your local school board and for further an
[29:15] Speaker 5: information right to the National Citizens Commission for the Public Schools,
[29:19] Speaker 5: New York, New York. That's the National Citizens Commission for
[29:23] Speaker 5: the Public Schools, New York, New York. Good citizens everywhere
[29:28] Speaker 5: are helping, but they know that better schools make better communities.
[29:33] Speaker 5: Missus Vincent Price, inviting you to join us again next
[29:35] Speaker 5: week at this same time for another exciting adventure of
[29:38] Speaker 5: the Saint. Good Night.
[29:52] Speaker 2: The night's script of The Saint was written by Dick Powell.
[29:54] Speaker 2: Our cast to Night included Gloria Blondelle, Jack Moyles, Halmarch
[29:58] Speaker 2: m Max, Bob Clark, and Marry Doctor. The music was
[30:01] Speaker 2: composed and conducted by Von Dexter. The Saint, based on
[30:04] Speaker 2: characters created by Leslie Charteris, is a James L. Safier
[30:08] Speaker 2: production and is directed by Helen n. Vincent Price is
[30:11] Speaker 2: soon to be seen co starring in RKO's production of
[30:14] Speaker 2: His Kind of Woman. All you Saint fans will be
[30:16] Speaker 2: glad to know that the Saint comic books are on
[30:18] Speaker 2: sale at all newsstands. You're announcer Val Brown, Three Times
[30:24] Speaker 2: Mean Good Times on NBC. There's Fine Entertainment on Theeter
[30:27] Speaker 2: Gild on the Air, returning Next Sunday on NBC. This weekend,
[30:31] Speaker 2: four hundred Americans have a holiday.
[30:33] Speaker 5: Date with death. Stay off the list. Be careful.
[30:36] Speaker 2: Next Sam Spade, then here Katherine Grayson on NBC.
[30:51] Speaker 1: Welcome Back. I have to admit that I was a
[30:55] Speaker 1: little bit confused, as I tended to think of any
[31:00] Speaker 1: of the Saint's adventures taking place in New York and
[31:03] Speaker 1: certainly with Louis, based on his accent. However, the Brooklyn
[31:09] Speaker 1: Cabbet had kind of become a national institution, at least
[31:13] Speaker 1: over radio. I also struggled a bit with the idea
[31:16] Speaker 1: of the Saint being in a minor league city, but
[31:19] Speaker 1: then again, this was nineteen fifty, so everywhere west of
[31:24] Speaker 1: Saint Louis was a minor league city.
[31:27] Speaker 5: I have to say that the.
[31:29] Speaker 1: Character Lefty is kind of fascinating. He's a very flawed
[31:35] Speaker 1: man who owns his mistakes, of which there were many.
[31:40] Speaker 1: He's alienated from his son, a party responsible for an
[31:45] Speaker 1: acrimonious divorce, failed to prepare for his post baseball career,
[31:50] Speaker 1: failed to save any money, and didn't even really have
[31:54] Speaker 1: fun in the course of this very long and successful
[31:58] Speaker 1: major league career. He was and he's not even trying
[32:02] Speaker 1: to work his way into his son's good graces. He's
[32:05] Speaker 1: trying to just save him from ruining his life and
[32:09] Speaker 1: his career, and you can definitely appreciate why Simon is
[32:13] Speaker 1: sympathetic and even carries on this mission after Lefty was murdered.
[32:20] Speaker 1: I think that the plot by night In is clever.
[32:25] Speaker 1: It's nice break from the typical old time radio plot
[32:30] Speaker 1: of you know, we're gonna make a bunch of money
[32:33] Speaker 1: fixing the game or fight or whatever. It's playing a
[32:37] Speaker 1: long game and taking advantage of the loop her atmosphere
[32:44] Speaker 1: in the minor leagues who acquire long term stakes in
[32:48] Speaker 1: a future big leg star and the bet with the
[32:52] Speaker 1: bookie was an interesting puzzle. Do think that Diane was
[32:57] Speaker 1: probably overplaying her villains part right in front of Phil.
[33:02] Speaker 1: I mean, at some point Phil should have said, you know,
[33:04] Speaker 1: I am just I am standing right here at anyway, though,
[33:08] Speaker 1: a good episode. Now we turn to some listener comments
[33:12] Speaker 1: and feedback, and we start with this from Peter, who
[33:18] Speaker 1: writes in regarding the episode reflection on murder. I couldn't
[33:23] Speaker 1: help but notice the sound of instrumental music during some
[33:26] Speaker 1: of the dialogue for this episode. It almost sounded like
[33:29] Speaker 1: the episode was tape recorded over a previous recording of
[33:32] Speaker 1: an orchestra. Was this sort of thing common during the
[33:36] Speaker 1: old time radio era? Now, it was common during the
[33:40] Speaker 1: era during which old time radio was being circulated in
[33:46] Speaker 1: the early years. During those early years of old time
[33:50] Speaker 1: radio collecting, there was a lot of copying of episodes
[33:58] Speaker 1: onto tape and even reusing and re recording over old tapes,
[34:04] Speaker 1: and so you might end up with sound artifacts, and
[34:08] Speaker 1: those recordings, in some cases, with various episodes of various series,
[34:15] Speaker 1: might be the best that we have available. That's why
[34:18] Speaker 1: for a lot of old time radio collectors and researchers,
[34:23] Speaker 1: the aim of old time radio collecting and preservation isn't
[34:28] Speaker 1: just about finding new recordings, but it's also about finding
[34:32] Speaker 1: upgraded recordings, better copies. But alas in some cases they
[34:37] Speaker 1: are just not available. Then we have a comment from
[34:41] Speaker 1: Sasoff on reflection on murder. Okay, when I die, I'll
[34:45] Speaker 1: make sure to have eleven dollars and sixty three cents
[34:49] Speaker 1: in my pants pocket. I wish you well. I tell
[34:53] Speaker 1: you to tell me how that goes, but for obvious reasons,
[34:58] Speaker 1: you would not be able to. But I appreciate the comment. Anyway,
[35:01] Speaker 1: thanks so much, says all. Well, now it's time to
[35:04] Speaker 1: thank our Patreon supporter of the day. Thank you to Brian,

[35:42] Speaker 5: Where over to missus Jone.
[35:43] Speaker 17: I went over there once, the youngster Miami said it
[35:46] Speaker 17: only happened at night. And I've seen her walking out
[35:49] Speaker 17: in the white nightgown with the moon shining down hun
[35:51] Speaker 17: her walking around in the back of the house, outside
[35:53] Speaker 17: the ship just behind.
[35:54] Speaker 13: The house, five times in a circle, walking around and
[35:58] Speaker 13: then just stockstill. And she wasn't talking to no god
[36:02] Speaker 13: in the sky. She was talking to the devil underfoot.
[36:05] Speaker 3: Or what do you think she did?
[36:06] Speaker 7: Missus Stones.
[36:06] Speaker 17: I've known them both, miss Herkimer and her mother going
[36:08] Speaker 17: on to forty years. She killed her Mah.
[36:11] Speaker 8: That's what she done, killed her mother.
[36:13] Speaker 17: As God is my witness.
