[1:39] Speaker 2: Broadways Mybeat from Clams Square to Columbus Circle, The gaudiest,
[1:44] Speaker 2: the most violent, the lonesomest mile in the world. Broadways Mybeat,
[1:54] Speaker 2: The exciting drama of people who walk the Great White
[1:57] Speaker 2: Way With Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover. The Miracle
[2:13] Speaker 2: of June slips down over Broadway like a golden gauze
[2:16] Speaker 2: and the street slows down for the burst of sun.
[2:19] Speaker 3: It's the time of vacation.
[2:21] Speaker 2: Schedules posted near the water cooler and the words the
[2:24] Speaker 2: magic names Catskill, far rockaway Atlantic City. And you wonder
[2:29] Speaker 2: how she'll come to you this year on a sand
[2:32] Speaker 2: dune of portable radio, or with a tennis racket and
[2:34] Speaker 2: golden legs, or on a horse.
[2:37] Speaker 3: It's the time to turn on the.
[2:39] Speaker 2: Tree, cotton candy, time and carnival bleachers and hot dog
[2:43] Speaker 2: with everything. Time it's happened. It's here again. It's June,
[2:53] Speaker 2: and in the afternoon in the East sixties, June gets
[2:55] Speaker 2: an assistant the management white stock and bowls on the
[2:59] Speaker 2: lobby desk only and basis on carter tables. And they
[3:02] Speaker 2: ended abruptly at the doorway number three twelve for death
[3:06] Speaker 2: intruded or I was what Detective Muggavan was.
[3:09] Speaker 4: His man was fround here in his living room by
[3:11] Speaker 4: a newsboy, Danny Kid. I talked to door to this
[3:13] Speaker 4: apartment open, uh huh. Left the money for the week's
[3:16] Speaker 4: paper delivery on that table right inside the door.
[3:19] Speaker 3: Kid would pick up the money, locked the door on
[3:21] Speaker 3: his way out. No money left today, so the kid
[3:23] Speaker 3: walked in.
[3:24] Speaker 4: A little way and so yeah, shot up closer.
[3:31] Speaker 3: It's like a thirty eighth.
[3:32] Speaker 4: Caliber about it did about two hours and places.
[3:36] Speaker 3: Time of shooting around three o'clock. You know who this
[3:38] Speaker 3: man is? Sure a positive identification.
[3:41] Speaker 4: Name is Harry Moore, h forty one, construction contractor, firm
[3:45] Speaker 4: of Moore and Nelson. No financial worries, no known enemies. No,
[3:48] Speaker 4: that's a real good mugavan. I'll just find out so soon.
[3:51] Speaker 4: His wife, she's in there, she's see it half. No,
[3:54] Speaker 4: she came in here a few minutes after I got here.
[3:56] Speaker 3: Let's talk to her.
[3:57] Speaker 4: Sure, this is Moore, Missus Moore. So, this is Lieutenant Clover,
[4:06] Speaker 4: Missus Moore. He'd like to speak to you.
[4:07] Speaker 5: You can't come in here. This is my bedroom.
[4:10] Speaker 3: I'd just like to ask you a few questions. It's all.
[4:13] Speaker 5: I feel very much better. Thank you, Thank you very much,
[4:17] Speaker 5: Thank you.
[4:18] Speaker 3: Well. Missus Moore was at a tea lunch in Danny.
[4:21] Speaker 4: She told me where Missus Moore had six cocktails.
[4:24] Speaker 5: I think it was only five. I was going to
[4:28] Speaker 5: tell you because I don't want to lie to any
[4:29] Speaker 5: policeman in.
[4:30] Speaker 3: The world about your husband, Missus Moore.
[4:32] Speaker 5: Harry did this man told me Harry's going away and
[4:37] Speaker 5: never coming back. And I must be very brave about it.
[4:41] Speaker 3: You have any idea, one great?
[4:43] Speaker 5: If I'm very good, I'll see Harry again.
[4:46] Speaker 3: That's the kind of answers I've been getting, Danny. She
[4:48] Speaker 3: doesn't look real. Don you feel fine? How missus? Moore?
[4:52] Speaker 3: Head's not spending nothing like that?
[4:54] Speaker 5: Fine? Clear headed? Oh, I'm not drunk, if that's what
[4:59] Speaker 5: you mean, not at all. I know what's being drunk like. Yeah,
[5:07] Speaker 5: I do feel a little busy, and I know why
[5:12] Speaker 5: Harry's not with me anymore. Harry did, and I know it,
[5:18] Speaker 5: and I know it, and I've got to think about it.
[5:27] Speaker 2: Watch her as she turns away from your emotion, tenuous
[5:30] Speaker 2: suspended dance like then a sudden twist and contortion as
[5:34] Speaker 2: the sobbing wells like something from childhood. Watch her if
[5:38] Speaker 2: she moves swiftly to the couch, throws herself onto it
[5:41] Speaker 2: and mute your sobbing and still can pilla.
[5:47] Speaker 3: And she's still then sleeps. This is the escape of
[5:52] Speaker 3: the wife of the dead.
[5:58] Speaker 2: Leave there, leave not a check on our learned that
[6:00] Speaker 2: viv Moore had attended the Wives and Girls Tea luncheon
[6:03] Speaker 2: from one into four. The cocktails had been served, and
[6:06] Speaker 2: poor Vivy had got tipsy and gigley and had to
[6:09] Speaker 2: be put in a cab and told the way home
[6:12] Speaker 2: and thanked the woman who was bored and exhausted with
[6:14] Speaker 2: having arranged it.
[6:15] Speaker 3: All the wives and.
[6:16] Speaker 2: Girls then to the construction firm of Moore than Nelson,
[6:20] Speaker 2: and the information from a weary draftsman that he was
[6:22] Speaker 2: over work, that mister Nelson was supervising the current job
[6:25] Speaker 2: at thirty of an east river out in the sun.
[6:29] Speaker 2: Then the skeleton of steel patterned and laced and riveted
[6:32] Speaker 2: against the backdrop of river. The man with a straw
[6:35] Speaker 2: hat tilted far back in his head.
[6:37] Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm Nelson, Steve Nelson. Got something I can do
[6:39] Speaker 6: for you, please, mister Nelson. One of my boys, huh
[6:42] Speaker 6: rough crew plusky I'll go bail for anyone of them,
[6:46] Speaker 6: take him out and bring him to me.
[6:47] Speaker 3: I don't go his, not the crew.
[6:49] Speaker 6: Harry Moore. I'll do likewise for him anytime any day.
[6:53] Speaker 6: Got to tell you, though, long as I know him,
[6:55] Speaker 6: you're the first cup that ever said Harry Moore to.
[6:57] Speaker 3: Me, and going to do him in a good He's dead.
[7:01] Speaker 2: He's been murdered. He found him in his apartment shop
[7:05] Speaker 2: of the thirty eighth. Figured it happened to him round
[7:07] Speaker 2: three this afternoon.
[7:09] Speaker 6: Three this PM. I was up forty stories there. You
[7:14] Speaker 6: have a gun, mister Nelson, No gun. Ask my boys.
[7:18] Speaker 6: I tell you I've got a whip studded with hot rivets.
[7:20] Speaker 6: They talk like that, and I'm so good to him.
[7:23] Speaker 6: I ought to tell you something, mister Clover, What about Harry?
[7:26] Speaker 6: Not really any of my business, no skin off of
[7:28] Speaker 6: my back? What about Harry? About out for a week now,
[7:31] Speaker 6: maybe ten days? My boy has been leading me alone
[7:34] Speaker 6: to handle this job. Hasn't showed up at all. I
[7:37] Speaker 6: couldn't figure it.
[7:38] Speaker 3: Harry's a type.
[7:39] Speaker 6: Guy, was always right in there, made with a rivet gun,
[7:41] Speaker 6: with advice, with bandages, and somebody was hurt. Couldn't figure
[7:45] Speaker 6: it until until what one of my boys, one of
[7:48] Speaker 6: the crews, spied Harry walking skid row. You know the
[7:51] Speaker 6: Bowery goes to show you're never alone in this town.
[7:54] Speaker 6: Harry walks skid Row. There's always a guy to tell
[7:56] Speaker 6: you about a slummer gun.
[7:57] Speaker 3: Do you know what he was doing there?
[7:59] Speaker 6: Worried me too, So one night I went down cornered
[8:02] Speaker 6: Harry and a bar said, look Pale, that's as far
[8:06] Speaker 6: as I got. Look pal, I said, And then I'd
[8:08] Speaker 6: dried up because I figure Harry's life is Harry's life.
[8:11] Speaker 6: We were partners, not man and wife. I bought him
[8:14] Speaker 6: a drink and said, see you pell and walked up.
[8:17] Speaker 6: You know his wife, Vivy, Yeah, I nor you nor
[8:21] Speaker 6: I talked to it this afternoon. That child that walks
[8:24] Speaker 6: like a woman, Eh.
[8:27] Speaker 3: That viv how'd she get along with her husband?
[8:30] Speaker 6: Harry told me once said Vivy was a romance from football,
[8:33] Speaker 6: grandstands in school and nighttime bonfires. He married her. They
[8:37] Speaker 6: got along fine, he told me. Sometimes ice cream and cakes,
[8:40] Speaker 6: sometimes champagne and off the shoulder guns that viv quit
[8:46] Speaker 6: in time, mister clover, So you and I can knock off.
[8:48] Speaker 4: Huh So back to headquarters.
[8:54] Speaker 2: Now to the photo lab of playing a picture close
[8:56] Speaker 2: up of Harry Moore only slightly retouched me. Take it
[8:59] Speaker 2: and ride the night streets to the Bowery, go to
[9:01] Speaker 2: the places the bar in the back rooms dedicated to
[9:04] Speaker 2: knock rummy, to regret, to limbo to the biggest beer
[9:08] Speaker 2: in town for a dime or six empties show the
[9:12] Speaker 2: picture shaking the head means no, and all the mother
[9:15] Speaker 2: tongues gathered together here meaning never saw the man meaning
[9:19] Speaker 2: you've never been in here, meaning your cops that get
[9:22] Speaker 2: out of here. Walk the streets, show the picture, got
[9:26] Speaker 2: the stairs, get the stairs, and the whispers. He walked
[9:30] Speaker 2: away from the policeman, the intruder, upon the ten cent
[9:34] Speaker 2: heaven and at the time when one day slips into another,
[9:38] Speaker 2: the time of the sprawled man in the doorway and
[9:40] Speaker 2: the bus stop deals a little after that, after midnight,
[9:45] Speaker 2: walk into another place.
[9:46] Speaker 3: Benson's is called walk up to the bar.
[9:49] Speaker 2: A man behind it flips a corner of soggy rag
[9:52] Speaker 2: to make clean the area of an elbow.
[9:54] Speaker 3: What's yours? Police?
[9:58] Speaker 4: I know, I hear like a.
[10:01] Speaker 3: Look at this picture. I was saying this, Why homicide.
[10:10] Speaker 4: It would be? Have you seen him? You said homicide?
[10:14] Speaker 4: You mean he killed somebody? He's dad. No, I'm confused
[10:19] Speaker 4: him dead? Why did you see him? Homicide is about
[10:24] Speaker 4: as big as it can get, right, That's right. That's
[10:27] Speaker 4: why I'm telling him. Yeah, I saw this guy days ago.
[10:31] Speaker 4: I don't remember how many, maybe a week. She came
[10:34] Speaker 4: in there. As for Joe, Conno. I pointed Joe out
[10:37] Speaker 4: to him. It was Joe Kannell, big guy comes in
[10:40] Speaker 4: there for the brew. Joe was there when this guy
[10:45] Speaker 4: came in. I pointed Joe out to him like a coach.
[10:48] Speaker 4: He walked over and talked to Joe.
[10:50] Speaker 3: They went out.
[10:50] Speaker 4: Together in a friendly manner. Joe's a big guy, tough, dumb,
[10:56] Speaker 4: but tough.
[10:58] Speaker 3: I was surprised. How do I find him? This Joe Connell?
[11:01] Speaker 3: I can tell you where he lives, if that'll help you.
[11:04] Speaker 4: Uh. Down the street, second house from the corner of
[11:08] Speaker 4: this side, brought a bottle to one's third rear. This
[11:12] Speaker 4: guy did, huh, I'm really confused.
[11:42] Speaker 6: Okay that what told you the show was here?
[11:47] Speaker 3: So you walk right in?
[11:48] Speaker 1: Man?
[11:49] Speaker 3: You Joe Connell? Big joke, condo, big big what'd you
[11:55] Speaker 3: bring to see the show? Kid? Penny buck was let
[12:01] Speaker 3: me see what's the matter with you? Connor? You hurt?
[12:04] Speaker 3: Turning like, kid, you're gonna see a show? Turn it on?
[12:12] Speaker 4: You're bleeding here, take your hands when yes, spoiled it? Kid,
[12:19] Speaker 4: you went was spoiled. You like crawled in under the
[12:22] Speaker 4: tent and grabbed the look for free and shop. Yeah,
[12:28] Speaker 4: you take a seat.
[12:29] Speaker 3: Kid, Watch this. Watch me.
[12:33] Speaker 7: I'm gonna show you how a big man dies. You
[12:37] Speaker 7: watch this, you know something was a sudden.
[12:47] Speaker 3: You real? Small?
[13:07] Speaker 4: Broadway is My Beat, written by Morton Fine and David
[13:10] Speaker 4: Frigon and starring Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover.
[13:14] Speaker 8: How would you like to be an economist, or, better still,
[13:17] Speaker 8: an economic engineer. Let's suppose that you are one and
[13:21] Speaker 8: you're given a job. This job is to set a
[13:24] Speaker 8: town of twelve thousand people on its feet. There's a hitch,
[13:28] Speaker 8: of course, otherwise you wouldn't be asked to step in.
[13:31] Speaker 8: The problem is that the town, though it lies on
[13:34] Speaker 8: the seashore, is in an isolated tropical country. One good
[13:38] Speaker 8: thing you discover when you arrive is that just offshore
[13:41] Speaker 8: are shrimp. Here, you are sure is the beginning of
[13:44] Speaker 8: a big industry and the beginning of economic recovery. You
[13:48] Speaker 8: talk to the citizens and learn that they have a
[13:50] Speaker 8: fleet of shrimp boats, a fleet that consists of two
[13:54] Speaker 8: decrepit old boats. They had thought of exporting shrimp, but
[13:58] Speaker 8: that takes ice, and making ice takes power plants. Power
[14:02] Speaker 8: plants need water and skilled technicians. Then schools to educate
[14:07] Speaker 8: more technicians and money, more money than the town has.
[14:12] Speaker 8: This you can get, you can borrow. So what you
[14:15] Speaker 8: first decide is get the money and spend it thousands
[14:19] Speaker 8: and thousands of dollars. Then, as the whole picture crowds
[14:23] Speaker 8: in on you, you think the whole thing's impossible. But finally,
[14:28] Speaker 8: after much study, you realize that it actually can be done,
[14:32] Speaker 8: and you settle yourself to the long, long haul, thinking,
[14:36] Speaker 8: make haste but carefully.
[14:39] Speaker 3: Throughout the world.
[14:40] Speaker 8: This is what the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development,
[14:44] Speaker 8: the World Bank, is doing. It is an agency of
[14:47] Speaker 8: the United Nations, which is man's best hope for economic development,
[14:52] Speaker 8: for peace, and for justice.
[15:04] Speaker 2: The June morning is a sine on Broadway's pavements, and
[15:08] Speaker 2: the street is lustrous with the glow of chrome and
[15:10] Speaker 2: the brilliance of glass, reflecting the summer walk of women
[15:14] Speaker 2: in their morning trials, and Broadway leans against the neon
[15:17] Speaker 2: railings and times handicaps makes odds on how promises will
[15:22] Speaker 2: run later this day, when the track is faster and
[15:25] Speaker 2: the weather clearer, and the other diversions, the ones from
[15:29] Speaker 2: out of town and flowered prints, the straw bonnet woven
[15:32] Speaker 2: for big city, where veiled and tilted to the angles
[15:35] Speaker 2: safe on crowded subways, the non crushable linen, the freshly
[15:39] Speaker 2: laundered seersucker, and the white purse clutched tight held close
[15:43] Speaker 2: to the body. So make your pick, Kitty, and walk
[15:47] Speaker 2: up to the window and play it across the board.
[15:50] Speaker 2: It's June, the month of the.
[15:51] Speaker 4: Winning ticket, and at headquarters the June morning has Sergeant
[15:56] Speaker 4: Gino to tag game.
[15:57] Speaker 9: Hey, Manny, you know what but that Joe Connall, the
[16:01] Speaker 9: big boy you found shot up?
[16:03] Speaker 3: Or what a bottom you know?
[16:04] Speaker 9: Sinking fast at police hospital? Nanny still in shock, still unconscious,
[16:09] Speaker 9: Doctor Sinsky.
[16:09] Speaker 3: Don't hold out much hope. Wherever I am, Gino, you'll
[16:12] Speaker 3: let me know when I can talk to him.
[16:13] Speaker 9: It goes without saying, I've been thinking, Danny. I come
[16:17] Speaker 9: up with several items about this conne, like what he
[16:21] Speaker 9: is on the regular schedule of roused by our boys.
[16:24] Speaker 9: Our boys got the sneaking hunch this colonel is a
[16:26] Speaker 9: gun for hire, a free lance hood who works for
[16:29] Speaker 9: anyone with the price.
[16:30] Speaker 3: Well, they got something to build that on.
[16:32] Speaker 9: Two sentences for assault, root vicious now apparent motive none
[16:37] Speaker 9: that our boys could prove anyway. This gives them these
[16:41] Speaker 9: hunches and then kno what else?
[16:43] Speaker 3: What else is?
[16:44] Speaker 9: According to many previous becaus by prison psychiatrists, this conno
[16:48] Speaker 9: is in matur for such a big boy. IQ reports
[16:51] Speaker 9: a child would be scared to bring home. There's another thing,
[16:55] Speaker 9: Danny from Technical also and then.
[16:57] Speaker 3: Conno anytime you feel up to it. You know from.
[17:02] Speaker 9: Technical the report that the gun.
[17:04] Speaker 2: That killed Harry Moore also played hob with Big Joe O'Connell.
[17:07] Speaker 2: I see you get in touch with missus Moore, like
[17:10] Speaker 2: I told you.
[17:10] Speaker 9: Please hospital check me a little while ago, Danny, Missus
[17:13] Speaker 9: Moore is in the waiting room cooling the heels for you,
[17:16] Speaker 9: like at your request, I got in touch with her
[17:18] Speaker 9: to do you didn't find thanks, you know.
[17:23] Speaker 10: A hospitals brighten you need to cover sometimes other.
[17:40] Speaker 5: Times yeah, quietly flowers, But then I think what happened here? Pain,
[17:47] Speaker 5: sorrow and crying out? I know what that means. I
[17:52] Speaker 5: cry out Sometimes at night I do that, and I
[17:56] Speaker 5: sit up in my bed. No one comes to me
[17:59] Speaker 5: and comes.
[17:59] Speaker 3: To yeah, now that's your husband.
[18:02] Speaker 5: Before that, all the time, since I was small, no
[18:08] Speaker 5: one comes to me.
[18:09] Speaker 3: We're going to go in this room, Missus Moore. I
[18:12] Speaker 3: want you to look at a man. I want you to.
[18:15] Speaker 5: Tell me why, why do you want me to do this?
[18:19] Speaker 4: You must remember it's my job to find out who
[18:21] Speaker 4: killed your husband.
[18:23] Speaker 5: Yea, that's right.
[18:32] Speaker 3: Yeah. Have you ever seen him before? He's very sick,
[18:37] Speaker 3: very sick.
[18:39] Speaker 5: He's going to die.
[18:41] Speaker 3: The doctors are doing all that.
[18:44] Speaker 5: I would like to touch his face. I know you
[18:49] Speaker 5: can't hear me. Maybe you touch somehow you can feel it,
[18:55] Speaker 5: know how sorry I am.
[18:58] Speaker 4: Have you ever seen him before, Missus Moore? This man
[19:03] Speaker 4: was seen with your husband a few days before mister
[19:05] Speaker 4: Moore was murdered. Thank you, and mister Moore, the gun
[19:09] Speaker 4: shot your husband shot this man?
[19:13] Speaker 5: Poor?
[19:14] Speaker 3: Do you know why your husband was with this man?
[19:17] Speaker 5: Oh no, Please take me out of here now, mister Carr.
[19:27] Speaker 2: And leave there walking the gleaming corridors of the hospital. Again,
[19:31] Speaker 2: Missus Moore takes your arm and smiles up to you sadly,
[19:34] Speaker 2: apologetically sighs. Then thanks you when you put her in
[19:38] Speaker 2: a cab and tip your hat to her.
[19:41] Speaker 4: Find a restaurant and coffee now and watch the fat
[19:44] Speaker 4: fly on his slow trajectory across the menu painted on
[19:47] Speaker 4: the window.
[19:48] Speaker 3: Make a pattern with the bottom of the coffee mug
[19:50] Speaker 3: on the enameled copper and think a man respected, Harry
[19:55] Speaker 3: Moore dead, an assassin, Joe O'Connell dying, and the questions
[20:01] Speaker 3: why and by whom? What chain of circumstance? Back to
[20:06] Speaker 3: headquarters with it? Why and by whom he?
[20:09] Speaker 4: Danny quit A minute's going to your office to give
[20:12] Speaker 4: you something.
[20:13] Speaker 3: What have we gone? Routine? Check Danny bank account?
[20:15] Speaker 8: Harry Moore?
[20:16] Speaker 3: All, what about it? A week ago he.
[20:17] Speaker 7: Made it withdrawal of one thousand dollars?
[20:19] Speaker 4: Even three days ago, Missus Moore made a withdrawal too,
[20:23] Speaker 4: separate accounts.
[20:25] Speaker 3: She was two two and what day before yesterday? She
[20:28] Speaker 3: put it back? Makes sense to you? Uh huh a lot?
[20:32] Speaker 6: Hi, Donny? You down there?
[20:34] Speaker 3: Yeah? What do you want?
[20:35] Speaker 1: You know?
[20:36] Speaker 3: Doc?
[20:37] Speaker 9: In these hallways, she can't kill out her from dieseltle
[20:39] Speaker 9: bubble anyhow. Doctor Sinsky just called from the hospital. Joe
[20:43] Speaker 9: conno was dead. The good doctor said. Joe opened his
[20:47] Speaker 9: eyes and said, I couldn't take money from her, not
[20:51] Speaker 9: from her and died.
[20:53] Speaker 3: Does that mean anything, Donny? Everything? That's all I needed
[20:57] Speaker 3: to know. Ah mm by hello, good evening, missus Moore.
[21:27] Speaker 3: You remember Detective Muddling, don't you?
[21:30] Speaker 5: Yes, of course I do. But why shouldn't I please
[21:34] Speaker 5: come in?
[21:34] Speaker 3: Thanks? I have feeling, Missus Moore, Oh very well, thank you?
[21:41] Speaker 3: No more six cocktails at one? Sitting there?
[21:44] Speaker 5: I told you I only had five.
[21:46] Speaker 3: That's right, you did.
[21:48] Speaker 5: I'd be very pleased to fix you something. I make
[21:51] Speaker 5: a nice my teenie. My husband Harry taught me. Whenever
[21:56] Speaker 5: we had guests, I'd mixed to my teenies and bring
[21:58] Speaker 5: them in and passed them around. Harry would be proud.
[22:02] Speaker 5: He'd say, my little girl maybe, and the guests would
[22:06] Speaker 5: all smile, and Harry would say, you know, I mean it,
[22:09] Speaker 5: My little girl really did me? See? Shall I fix
[22:14] Speaker 5: you up?
[22:14] Speaker 3: Nothing? Thank you? Do you know why we're here, missus Moore?
[22:19] Speaker 5: That man you took me to stay at the hospital,
[22:22] Speaker 5: how isy?
[22:22] Speaker 3: He died a little while ago.
[22:25] Speaker 5: I've been sitting here all day, making phone calls, arrangements
[22:28] Speaker 5: for Harry's funeral, making out risks. When I set my
[22:32] Speaker 5: mind to do anything, anything at all, I can do it.
[22:36] Speaker 3: This is Moore. Mister Clover asked your question. I know
[22:40] Speaker 3: I did.
[22:41] Speaker 5: He asked me if I knew why you gentlemen were here.
[22:44] Speaker 5: I suppose you have your reasons you'll tell me.
[22:47] Speaker 3: One of the reasons was to tell you Joe Connell died.
[22:50] Speaker 5: But you said that You've already told.
[22:52] Speaker 3: Me that he killed your husband, and.
[22:55] Speaker 5: Now he's dead. This man, this Joe Connall.
[22:58] Speaker 3: Do you know why he killed your missus Moore?
[23:01] Speaker 11: No?
[23:01] Speaker 3: Or who told him to kill your husband? No, you're
[23:04] Speaker 3: not drunk now, so you can think clearly. Do you
[23:06] Speaker 3: know why he killed your husband?
[23:08] Speaker 4: No?
[23:12] Speaker 5: No, I don't. I don't.
[23:15] Speaker 4: You've made all the arrangements for your husband's funeral, haven't you.
[23:17] Speaker 4: I told you you haven't made him.
[23:21] Speaker 3: No, No, I don't beautifully kept apartment.
[23:24] Speaker 5: I do it all myself, and I shop and I budget.
[23:28] Speaker 5: Harry used to say, there's nobody like my little girl
[23:31] Speaker 5: to run a house. I do it all myself.
[23:33] Speaker 3: Why don't you come off with missus Moore?
[23:35] Speaker 4: Why don't you tell us about your husband, about Joe Connell.
[23:38] Speaker 3: You're a capable woman.
[23:39] Speaker 6: You're not a little girl, no more.
[23:41] Speaker 3: No more. That's right, So it's all right to tell
[23:44] Speaker 3: us about your husband and Joe Connell.
[23:47] Speaker 5: I don't know what you mean, honestly, the way you're talking.
[23:50] Speaker 3: I'm you and your husband get along.
[23:52] Speaker 5: We were man and wife.
[23:54] Speaker 3: He called your little girl all the time.
[23:57] Speaker 5: No, not for a long time. We had a big gardument.
[24:02] Speaker 5: One day he screamed.
[24:03] Speaker 3: At me, this little girl that got on his nerves.
[24:05] Speaker 5: Huh, listen, I'm me and I'm nobody else. I'll tell
[24:09] Speaker 5: you just what I told Harry Moore. I'm me and
[24:11] Speaker 5: I'm nobody else. Harry wound me, he won me, and
[24:14] Speaker 5: I'm the kind of girly marriage.
[24:19] Speaker 3: We know all about it, miss book. How your husband
[24:21] Speaker 3: searched the bowery and finally found the man he was
[24:24] Speaker 3: looking for, Joe Connell.
[24:26] Speaker 5: Harry did things, A lot of things.
[24:30] Speaker 3: He didn't have to tell me.
[24:32] Speaker 5: A man has his privacy. I know that.
[24:34] Speaker 3: Did you know he hired Joe Connell to kill you,
[24:38] Speaker 3: paid him a thousand dollars to murder you because he
[24:40] Speaker 3: was sick of you? Did you know that, missus Moore? Yeah?
[24:46] Speaker 5: One day when I was on the street, Joe got
[24:50] Speaker 5: out of a car and walked over to me. He
[24:53] Speaker 5: pointed a gun at me and told me to get
[24:54] Speaker 5: in a car. I did. By the time we got
[24:59] Speaker 5: to where we were going, Joe put away the gun.
[25:03] Speaker 5: We were laughing.
[25:04] Speaker 3: You and Connell got along. Huh.
[25:07] Speaker 5: I never meant anybody like him. He told me people
[25:11] Speaker 5: thought he was dumb, but he wasn't dumb. I knew
[25:15] Speaker 5: that right away.
[25:16] Speaker 3: He told you why he picked you up in me.
[25:19] Speaker 5: He said Harry had given him a thousand dollars. I
[25:22] Speaker 5: told Joe, I'll give him two thousand dollars not to
[25:24] Speaker 5: kill me. Joe said, all right. So when I got
[25:28] Speaker 5: the money from the back and gave it to him,
[25:31] Speaker 5: Joe wouldn't take it. We got along fine. We went
[25:37] Speaker 5: to the movie Penny Arcade. Joe wanted to take me
[25:40] Speaker 5: to Coney but I.
[25:42] Speaker 10: Said, later, after what Joe told me, he was going
[25:48] Speaker 10: to kill Harry.
[25:49] Speaker 3: After that, Joe told you that, and you didn't nothing
[25:52] Speaker 3: about it.
[25:53] Speaker 5: Harry wanted me dead. So why should I help Harry?
[25:57] Speaker 3: Tell me? Right?
[25:58] Speaker 5: Joe and I figured got out together.
[26:02] Speaker 3: How did Joe get shot?
[26:05] Speaker 5: His room? The evening after he shot Harry, he was
[26:10] Speaker 5: showing me how he did it. He said, I took
[26:13] Speaker 5: this gun and I shot him. I said, let me see.
[26:19] Speaker 5: He gave me the gun, showed me how to work
[26:21] Speaker 5: the safety catch and everything. I said, like this, and
[26:26] Speaker 5: I pointed it at him and he laughed, and I laughed.
[26:31] Speaker 5: I said, bang, and I must have pulled the trigger.
[26:36] Speaker 5: Joe stopped laughing, and he said, you'd better go home now.
[26:59] Speaker 4: Life bloom upward into the sky on Broadway, and night
[27:03] Speaker 4: bursts open.
[27:04] Speaker 3: The swarm starts.
[27:05] Speaker 2: It stands down the canyon, the streets, and the little
[27:09] Speaker 2: man stalks the heels of a drunkard. There's the place
[27:13] Speaker 2: of darning eyes, the fleeting smile, whispers, and the wind
[27:17] Speaker 2: and crowd and roar, the empty hand. It's Broadway, the gaudiest,
[27:25] Speaker 2: most violent, the lonesomest smile in the world.
[27:32] Speaker 3: Broadway my beat.
[27:48] Speaker 8: And would you like to tackle a big job, something
[27:52] Speaker 8: that would tax your muscles, your money, your brains, your imagination,
[27:57] Speaker 8: and your faith. Then try us in plant in an
[28:00] Speaker 8: underdeveloped country. You want to build one to help the country,
[28:04] Speaker 8: But it would be worthless without quarrying equipment. And this
[28:07] Speaker 8: would be worthless without a machine shop. And what does
[28:10] Speaker 8: the machine shop require power? But for power you need
[28:14] Speaker 8: transmission lines. And for all of these you need both
[28:17] Speaker 8: experts and laborers. You might be able to bring in
[28:21] Speaker 8: some experts for a time, but what happens when they leave?
[28:24] Speaker 8: Does the country have the technical schools to turn out
[28:27] Speaker 8: more experts?
[28:28] Speaker 6: In fact, what do you.
[28:29] Speaker 8: Do if your laborers are illiterate and can't read even
[28:32] Speaker 8: a bulletin board. Also, although there may be the will
[28:35] Speaker 8: to build all these things, is there the strength derived
[28:39] Speaker 8: from the proper diet. With all these obstacles, where does
[28:43] Speaker 8: it leave your cement plant. There is a way to
[28:46] Speaker 8: build this, but not with just money. It is a
[28:49] Speaker 8: matter of building the foundation of an entire economy from
[28:52] Speaker 8: the schools up throughout the world. That is what UNICS, UNESCO,
[28:57] Speaker 8: the World Bank and many other organists are trying to do.
[29:01] Speaker 3: With increasing success.
[29:03] Speaker 8: They are all agencies of the United Nations, which is
[29:06] Speaker 8: man's best hope for health, economic development, peace and justice.

[31:14] Speaker 1: Welcome back, all right. Even though we don't have any
[31:18] Speaker 1: voice acting credits for this episode, I feel almost certain
[31:23] Speaker 1: that Vivian was played by Loreen Tuttle. I must say
[31:28] Speaker 1: that the solution to this episode does feel kind of
[31:32] Speaker 1: like a bit of a drained rom com. I want

[32:24] Speaker 3: Just figured I was arrested again.
[32:26] Speaker 11: That's all he seemed to know all about the first
[32:28] Speaker 11: pach I stood making books.
[32:29] Speaker 1: He told me that I'd been operating for about a
[32:31] Speaker 1: month and a half.
[32:32] Speaker 3: He said he had his eye on. What did he
[32:34] Speaker 3: do after he told you was a policeman.
[32:36] Speaker 11: Well, I started to explain to him how the things
[32:38] Speaker 11: shaped up when I was making books again and I
[32:41] Speaker 11: had to pay up those doctors bills. I tied the
[32:43] Speaker 11: bag off, I told him, and I put right now.
[32:46] Speaker 11: Then he turns on and tells me I don't have
[32:48] Speaker 11: to What do you mean, Well, that's just what he said.
[32:51] Speaker 1: He didn't.
[32:52] Speaker 3: He didn't make sense to me either, and he went on.
[32:55] Speaker 11: He told me I was operating in his destiny, said,
[32:58] Speaker 11: be okay, if I went right along the way I was,
[33:01] Speaker 11: He set other that I didn't stand any pinches.
[33:05] Speaker 3: Yes, sir, What else he said?
[33:08] Speaker 11: Well, he said he wasn't the only one who would
[33:10] Speaker 11: have to be taken care of. He said there was
[33:12] Speaker 11: his partner and then a couple of guys over him. Me,
[33:16] Speaker 11: he'd have to be taken care of too. He said
[33:18] Speaker 11: the juice would cost me one hundred bucks a week.
[33:20] Speaker 11: I tried to explain to him at that well, I
[33:23] Speaker 11: told him I wasn't operating big.
[33:25] Speaker 1: I was just on the side.
[33:26] Speaker 11: I said, I wasn't making that much a week or
[33:28] Speaker 11: but all I was learning is about fifty.
[33:30] Speaker 3: That's all just fifty. Then he said, well, he says, all.
[33:33] Speaker 11: Right, if that's if that's the way you feel about it,
[33:35] Speaker 11: I'll just take you down book you now. Well, I
[33:40] Speaker 11: told him I didn't want to stand the pinch again,
[33:42] Speaker 11: and I'd do the best I could. So he finally said,
[33:45] Speaker 11: I'll give you two weeks to go ahead and open
[33:47] Speaker 11: this thing up. He said I'd have to do more
[33:50] Speaker 11: business because the juice was just going to cost me
[33:51] Speaker 11: a hundred a week.
[33:53] Speaker 3: He didn't care how I got it.
[33:54] Speaker 4: This policeman told you to go ahead and open up
[33:57] Speaker 4: for a hundred a week. He could go ahead and
[33:58] Speaker 4: make book and nobody body. Yeah, did your wife ever
[34:01] Speaker 4: see this policeman, this fellow Williams.
[34:03] Speaker 3: Yes, say she saw him. She saw a couple of times.
[34:05] Speaker 3: She saw me. Shaw me give him the money.
[34:08] Speaker 11: The wind always start m about the first of July
