[4:17] Speaker 2: expenses incurred during my investigation of the Frisco fire matter.
[4:25] Speaker 2: First of all, I had to make sure my expenses
[4:27] Speaker 2: to the West Coast wouldn't have to come out of
[4:29] Speaker 2: my own pocket, so expense account. I had a one
[4:31] Speaker 2: ten cents for a call that got Pat McCrackan, a
[4:33] Speaker 2: Universal Adjustment Bureau, out of his bed. I asked him
[4:36] Speaker 2: to dig up some facts and figures for me in
[4:38] Speaker 2: a hurry. Within twenty minutes he called me back, Johnny Dollar.
[4:44] Speaker 4: Well, Johnny, I've been on the phone to San Francisco
[4:46] Speaker 4: ever since you called me.
[4:48] Speaker 2: You were right about the big fire.
[4:50] Speaker 3: Yeah, how did you find out about it?
[4:52] Speaker 2: I never mind that, Pat, just keep talking. H Well, it's.
[4:55] Speaker 3: Aware use It's own and operated by mister Peter H.
[4:59] Speaker 4: Barnwell, and he has an office at fourteen to twenty.
[5:03] Speaker 2: Seven Comack Street, fourteen twenty seven. Come back, got it?
[5:06] Speaker 2: And the insurance three hundred and forty thousand wow, carried
[5:10] Speaker 2: by Greater Southwest Insurance Company. Pat if I hurry, I
[5:14] Speaker 2: can just make plane connections. No, wait a minute, thanks,
[5:17] Speaker 2: thanks a lot. I had them two two h one
[5:23] Speaker 2: eighty eight playing fair Hertford to New York to San Francisco.
[5:26] Speaker 2: I believe me. Those jet flights on American get you
[5:29] Speaker 2: there in a hurry. I left New York at eight
[5:31] Speaker 2: am and pulled into San Francisco before noon Pacific time.
[5:35] Speaker 2: Of course, I had him three a time for newspaper
[5:37] Speaker 2: at the airport. Apparently the fire had burned itself out.
[5:41] Speaker 2: I had him four six seventy five taxi to Peter H.
[5:44] Speaker 2: Barnwell's office on Comack Street. The reception room was jammed. No, no,
[5:51] Speaker 2: there's no point in sending anybody over here because he
[5:54] Speaker 2: won't see them. Now listen, chick, I'll get your tickets
[5:59] Speaker 2: for any show in time.
[6:00] Speaker 5: On.
[6:00] Speaker 2: No, I tell you he won't see any of you,
[6:04] Speaker 2: not even me.
[6:05] Speaker 6: No, Now, why don't you reporters just go back to
[6:08] Speaker 6: your papers and wait until mister Barnwell was ready to
[6:11] Speaker 6: talk to you.
[6:12] Speaker 2: My card, miss, it's no use, miss. Will you read it? Please?
[6:15] Speaker 2: But he doesn't want to see any reporters, right, oh.
[6:19] Speaker 3: Yeah, just a minute, mister dollar, how do you write that?
[6:23] Speaker 2: Buddy? What paper are you from the Bingville Bugle? Huh yeah,
[6:30] Speaker 2: that's out near bum spung oklahol and our luck wise guy. Look,
[6:35] Speaker 2: mister dollar, mister dollar dollar, will you come in please,
[6:39] Speaker 2: mister dollar, sure, wait a minute to Johnny Dollar.
[6:42] Speaker 3: In sure right in here, sir.
[6:43] Speaker 2: Thanks, Hey, wait a minute, sit down, mister Dollar. Make
[6:48] Speaker 2: your shelveing home. I must say, you want it all
[6:52] Speaker 2: upset about the loss of your warehouse, should I be
[6:55] Speaker 2: sit down? Sure, mister Dollar, that building been a losing
[7:00] Speaker 2: promposition for years because of its bad location, because of
[7:05] Speaker 2: zoning restrictions, and the cost to tearing it down. I
[7:09] Speaker 2: have done nothing but lose money on it all. But
[7:12] Speaker 2: I've been very careful to keep up the insurance. So
[7:17] Speaker 2: now that it's gone up in flames, I shall let
[7:19] Speaker 2: long last collect on it. Three hundred and forty thousand dollars,
[7:24] Speaker 2: that's right, And with whatever I can get from some
[7:27] Speaker 2: of the misguided investor of the land itself, I'll be
[7:30] Speaker 2: sitting pretty I see now. Don't get any funny ideas,
[7:34] Speaker 2: mister investigator. The police have found nothing whatsoever to suggests arson,
[7:41] Speaker 2: No will they. You sound pretty sure of that. I'm
[7:45] Speaker 2: sure of it, even if it were a job that
[7:47] Speaker 2: you didn't have done. I'm sure of it. You know something,
[7:51] Speaker 2: mister Barnwell, I'm not so if you can be of
[7:54] Speaker 2: any help in putting through my can you hear what
[7:57] Speaker 2: I said? I heard? Mister Dollar doesn't worry me a bit, Hey, fellas,
[8:16] Speaker 2: Mike car filter maybe worth a thousand bucks how's that
[8:19] Speaker 2: hurt over the radio that the people who make PRAM
[8:21] Speaker 2: filters have a big treasure hunt on. So I checked
[8:24] Speaker 2: my oil and air filter, and I'll be dog gone
[8:26] Speaker 2: if there wasn't a specially marked PRAM air filter that
[8:29] Speaker 2: might pay me a thousand dollars. Oh kidding. My service
[8:31] Speaker 2: station man said, whatever I win, he'll win the same amount.
[8:34] Speaker 2: Told me a regular filter check is important to today's cars,
[8:38] Speaker 2: So important that PRAM Corporation is paying sixty thousand dollars
[8:42] Speaker 2: to get car owners to check their filters now cash money, sure,
[8:45] Speaker 2: this is Framsilver anniversary. Last year, ten thousand secretly numbered
[8:49] Speaker 2: PRAM filters were distributed all over the United States and
[8:53] Speaker 2: installed in cars during regular servicing. Every one of them
[8:56] Speaker 2: is worth cash, some as much as one thousand dollars.
[8:59] Speaker 2: Why one of you guys may have one in your car?
[9:02] Speaker 2: Not even low? Say what are we waiting for?
[9:04] Speaker 3: Let's get those builders.
[9:05] Speaker 2: Try hurry, folks, get in on the big brand treasure hunt.
[9:10] Speaker 2: You could win up to one thousand dollars in cash.
[9:13] Speaker 2: Check your car filters now, no act too of yours, truly,
[9:18] Speaker 2: Johnny Dollar and the Friscal fire Matter expense account at
[9:27] Speaker 2: him five two bucks for a taxi. In my opinion,
[9:30] Speaker 2: Peter H. Barnwell had the warehouse fire set. But opinions
[9:35] Speaker 2: don't count in my business. You've got to have proof,
[9:38] Speaker 2: and I hadn't yet got together with my informant, Smoky Sullivan.
[9:41] Speaker 2: Smoky wants a clever arsenist himself, later a counterfeiter, bootlegger,
[9:47] Speaker 2: just about everything in the book. But from the time
[9:49] Speaker 2: he helped me with a case a couple of years ago,
[9:51] Speaker 2: he'd stayed on the straight and narrow, and of course
[9:54] Speaker 2: I've always paid him well for his help. Before going
[9:56] Speaker 2: onto my hotel, I stopped in to see Bill Mullen
[9:59] Speaker 2: of the arsen Squad. Yeah, the papers say you're in town, Johnny,
[10:03] Speaker 2: glad to see you. Yeah, how are you, Bill? But
[10:05] Speaker 2: there's no reason for you to be here about that fire. Well,
[10:08] Speaker 2: that's so we've already found out how it started. Ah Bell,
[10:12] Speaker 2: some old derelict name of Stumpy Morane used to sleep
[10:17] Speaker 2: there every night, had an old iron bed and a
[10:19] Speaker 2: little sort of shack on one side of that warehouse. Yeah.
[10:22] Speaker 2: So last night, like a lot of the darn fools
[10:25] Speaker 2: all over the country, every night he went to bed
[10:27] Speaker 2: loaded and lit a cigarette result. No more mattress, no
[10:31] Speaker 2: more shack, no more warehouse. Why are you holding him? Also,
[10:36] Speaker 2: no more stumpy morane. He died in the fire. Yep.
[10:40] Speaker 2: And you're sure that's how it started, Johnny. When you've
[10:43] Speaker 2: combed through evidence on as many cases like that as
[10:45] Speaker 2: I have, there's no mistaking it. But now, Belle, that's
[10:48] Speaker 2: all away, from the source of the blaze, to the
[10:50] Speaker 2: empty bottle, the carbonized paper from the cigarette, the foil
[10:54] Speaker 2: from the cigarette package, the hair from the mattress, one
[10:57] Speaker 2: thousand and one little things that the ordinary person wouldn't
[11:00] Speaker 2: even think to look for. So listen, Yeah, be a
[11:04] Speaker 2: nice guy and call off the papers, will you? Why?
[11:07] Speaker 2: Because they saw you over in Barnwell's office. They've decided
[11:10] Speaker 2: it was Arsonal. They're calling us a bunch of bums.
[11:13] Speaker 2: The only reason they do it is to make headlines.
[11:16] Speaker 2: So call them up and tell them to layoff. Will
[11:18] Speaker 2: you set them straight? Not until I'm sure they aren't
[11:21] Speaker 2: right Bill? Huh? Wait a minute, what's that mean? I'll
[11:25] Speaker 2: see you later. I had him six another taxi to
[11:33] Speaker 2: the hotel, hunting it up on knob Hill. I went
[11:36] Speaker 2: straight to my room and sat down to wait for
[11:37] Speaker 2: smoking saw him to call. I didn't have to wait long. Smoky. Yeah,
[11:47] Speaker 2: well I hear they've found out how that fire started.
[11:50] Speaker 3: Stumpy.
[11:51] Speaker 2: That's right, Stumpy Moran.
[11:53] Speaker 4: He was a friend of mine. Not much brains, Johnny,
[11:56] Speaker 4: but a nice old guy.
[11:57] Speaker 2: But Johnny, Yeah, he didn't do it, but they found
[12:01] Speaker 2: all the evidence. He'd been drinking and smoking in bed.
[12:04] Speaker 2: He never touched the drop, Johnny. You sure he didn't
[12:08] Speaker 2: smoke neither? I know he was my pal. Or are
[12:11] Speaker 2: you smoking?
[12:12] Speaker 3: You know where the Hungry Angel is? Uh?
[12:14] Speaker 2: The cocktail borrower on that that's right.
[12:17] Speaker 3: Take the alley in back. I'm in the phone booth
[12:20] Speaker 3: at the end of it. I'll be waiting for.
[12:21] Speaker 2: You, Okay, and all listen. Yeah, do you know who
[12:25] Speaker 2: did set that fire? Yeah?
[12:27] Speaker 3: The only guy in the whole country who could leave
[12:29] Speaker 3: no trace.
[12:30] Speaker 2: Wait a minute, and they.
[12:32] Speaker 4: Won't even question him because he's been living straight for
[12:35] Speaker 4: so long.
[12:35] Speaker 2: Touchy Thompson.
[12:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, lives in.
[12:38] Speaker 4: A nice house on Aldea Drive five twenty seven, but
[12:42] Speaker 4: he ain't there.
[12:43] Speaker 3: Do you know a note Donnie's door says gone fishing.
[12:47] Speaker 2: You're absolutely sure it was he.
[12:49] Speaker 3: I'm the only.
[12:50] Speaker 4: One knew where to look for his signer on that
[12:52] Speaker 4: fire and I found it there. I'll show it to
[12:55] Speaker 4: you proof, Yes, sir, Johnny, I can prove that warehouse.
[13:00] Speaker 7: Oh no, Smokey, smoky, sociable, up to date, debonair a
[13:14] Speaker 7: new word game. Now I'm just mentioning the qualities that
[13:17] Speaker 7: people admire and other people.
[13:19] Speaker 2: Oh, I see if you're sociable, up to date? And
[13:21] Speaker 2: what was another word? Debonair? Yes, debonair.
[13:25] Speaker 7: But listen to it this way.
[13:36] Speaker 6: Be sociable, looks smart, up to date with pept drink
[13:46] Speaker 6: light refreshing pep.
[13:50] Speaker 2: Stay fair Deen, there be sociable, have PEPSI notice how
[14:00] Speaker 2: many of your friends are serving pepsicola these days. It's
[14:03] Speaker 2: the up to date refreshment. Be sociable, and Haley behind
[14:13] Speaker 2: the hungry Angel, I found a couple of policemen carefully
[14:16] Speaker 2: going over every inch of the phone both where Smokey'd
[14:18] Speaker 2: called me. Yeah, yeah, that's right. Conray heard the shots
[14:23] Speaker 2: and came running back here. You get the angle of
[14:25] Speaker 2: that bullet, Old Conroy. Listen, listen, what about Smoky City Hospital?
[14:29] Speaker 2: But he isn't gonna live dollar, not a chance, and
[14:32] Speaker 2: you have no idea who shut him? No, But you're
[14:35] Speaker 2: a smart dick, Why didn't you find out for it? All? Right? Now,
[14:38] Speaker 2: look now, let me tell you something else to Dollar.
[14:41] Speaker 2: If that warehouse fire had been a torch job, which
[14:43] Speaker 2: it wasn't, like you're blabbing it out to all our papers.
[14:47] Speaker 2: Your dear pal, Smoky Sullivan is the only one who
[14:49] Speaker 2: could have done it, so is being knocked off his
[14:52] Speaker 2: good riddance? Why Smoky, because we got every other firebug
[14:56] Speaker 2: in this time nailed down. That's why a bet, mister Dolla.
[15:08] Speaker 8: I honestly don't understand it, considering the way one of
[15:11] Speaker 8: those bullets nicked his heart. But it looks as though
[15:14] Speaker 8: that man Sullivan will live. The point is, doctor, can
[15:17] Speaker 8: I talk to him? Well, you can try, of course.
[15:20] Speaker 8: Oh this way, mister Dollar. But he was not able
[15:23] Speaker 8: to give anything to the police who just left. And listen, doctor,
[15:26] Speaker 8: do everything you can. From where do you out of
[15:28] Speaker 8: the bill?
[15:29] Speaker 2: Oh? Very well, right in here? Okay, you mind if
[15:35] Speaker 2: I talk to him alone, if you like, and if
[15:38] Speaker 2: you can minks.
[15:46] Speaker 9: Smoky, Smoky, Hi, Jenny.
[15:54] Speaker 2: Yeah, the doc says you're gonna be okay. Yeah, can't
[15:59] Speaker 2: get rid of me?
[16:00] Speaker 9: Had a boy, Smoky, I didn't talk to the cops
[16:06] Speaker 9: just looked at.
[16:07] Speaker 2: Him like I was dead of you. They smoky. Did
[16:12] Speaker 2: you see who put the slugs into you?
[16:15] Speaker 9: No, Johnny, but it must have been Touchy, Touchy Thompson,
[16:21] Speaker 9: same as he set that fire.
[16:24] Speaker 2: All right, No, listen, you're in no shape to go
[16:26] Speaker 2: over there and show me. But if the arsen squad
[16:29] Speaker 2: found no trace, and believe me, they know everything to
[16:31] Speaker 2: look for.
[16:32] Speaker 9: Chemic goods, what Touchy had? Chemicals? Special chemicals never left
[16:40] Speaker 9: the trace.
[16:41] Speaker 2: Everything leaves a trace of some kind.
[16:43] Speaker 9: Nah, he had to use a gas mask. That's what
[16:48] Speaker 9: must have knocked out Stumpy morane in Touchy could plant
[16:52] Speaker 9: the liquors, cigarettes.
[16:56] Speaker 2: And I guess the only thing I can do is
[16:58] Speaker 2: try to find Touchy Thompson. Johnny.
[17:01] Speaker 10: Yeah, if you do, Johnny, be careful, Yeah yeah.
[17:14] Speaker 2: Act four off yours truly, Johnny Dollar In a moment,
[17:18] Speaker 2: Rambler's station wagons lead all but two other makes, and
[17:21] Speaker 2: sales repeat. Rambler station wagons now lead all but two
[17:25] Speaker 2: other makes. Car registration figures prove it. Never before has
[17:29] Speaker 2: any station wagon scored such a sweeping success in so
[17:33] Speaker 2: short a time. Why the nationwide swing to Rambler. Will
[17:36] Speaker 2: listen to this if you want America's lowest price station wagon,
[17:40] Speaker 2: Rambler has it. If you want big six passenger room
[17:43] Speaker 2: plus America's easiest parking, Rambler has that. Most miles per
[17:47] Speaker 2: gallon Rambler has that too. Trade in value, Rambler has
[17:51] Speaker 2: the highest of any low priced car. Yes, Rambler is
[17:55] Speaker 2: America's top economy station wagon. But Rambler is also the
[17:58] Speaker 2: compact quality car, the only car to offer personalized comfort
[18:03] Speaker 2: including front seats to glide back and forward, separately adjustable headrest,
[18:07] Speaker 2: reclining seatbacks, finest air conditioning at lowest cost, deep dip rustproofing. Yes,
[18:13] Speaker 2: all America is discovering that Rambler station wagons are different,
[18:16] Speaker 2: and Americans love that difference. So will you drive a
[18:20] Speaker 2: Rambler station Wagon now six or V eight at Rambler
[18:23] Speaker 2: Dealers and now act four of yours? Truly? Johnny dollars
[18:34] Speaker 2: expense account at him seven five twenty more taxi fares.
[18:38] Speaker 2: There was nobody home at Touchy Thompson's place, only the
[18:41] Speaker 2: note in the door smoke he'd told me about gone
[18:43] Speaker 2: fishing fishing. Huh. He was probably hiding somewhere around the
[18:47] Speaker 2: town waiting for the atmosphere to clear. But how to
[18:50] Speaker 2: bring him out in the open then I suddenly remembered
[18:53] Speaker 2: an old friend of mine, Mary Webster, head man at
[18:56] Speaker 2: station KCBS. I'd have made a dollar even for a
[18:59] Speaker 2: kid after the Sheraton Palace and the KCBS studios. Johnny,
[19:04] Speaker 2: it is a pleasant surprise, although I had heard your
[19:06] Speaker 2: in town. How are you, Maury? Up to my neck.
[19:08] Speaker 2: We're in the midst of a big celebration, you know,
[19:10] Speaker 2: our fiftieth anniversary. Oh yes, sir, we were the first
[19:14] Speaker 2: broadcasting station in the country, and we're kind of proud
[19:17] Speaker 2: of me. Well, I should think you would be. Let
[19:18] Speaker 2: me add my congratulations. Thank you, Johnny. What brings you here? Maury?
[19:23] Speaker 2: When is your next news broadcast? Let me see and
[19:30] Speaker 2: mostly we'll hit the air in just about seven minutes.
[19:32] Speaker 2: That'll just give me time to knock out a news
[19:34] Speaker 2: item for him to read on the air. Oh what kind?
[19:36] Speaker 2: I tell you a while I'm scribbling it If you
[19:39] Speaker 2: don't mind, Well, yeah, John go ahead, Maury, I have
[19:44] Speaker 2: a sneaking suspicion it'll flush out an arsonist. Oh yeah,
[19:50] Speaker 2: and killer as briefly as possible. I told Mariy Webster
[19:57] Speaker 2: my plan. The wirelet handed in the news item I'd
[20:01] Speaker 2: cooked up He penciled in a couple of minor changes,
[20:04] Speaker 2: then gave it to his top man in the news bureau,
[20:06] Speaker 2: Don Mostly. A few minutes later. There in his office,
[20:09] Speaker 2: we listened to it being broadcast over the powerful facilities
[20:11] Speaker 2: of KCBS.
[20:12] Speaker 11: The international situation on the local scene. Whether it took
[20:15] Speaker 11: insurance investigator Johnny Doller to clear up the matter of
[20:18] Speaker 11: the Barnwell warehouse fire.
[20:20] Speaker 2: Here it comes.
[20:20] Speaker 11: Solar has proof inclusively that it was sent by an
[20:23] Speaker 11: old hand at that business named Smokey Sullivan, his reason
[20:27] Speaker 11: to kill another man by the name of Moran, whose.
[20:29] Speaker 2: Body was later found buried in the embers.
[20:32] Speaker 11: Incidentally, Sullivan himself has just died as a result of
[20:35] Speaker 11: bullet wounds, no doubt inflicted by some friend of Moran's
[20:38] Speaker 11: who sought to avenge his murder. Well as for the
[20:41] Speaker 11: hold up that occurred earlier this morning on the Embarcadero.
[20:45] Speaker 2: I hope it does the trick, Johnny. What are you
[20:47] Speaker 2: going to do now, Maury? There's going to be a
[20:50] Speaker 2: stake out at the home of one John I. Thompson,
[20:53] Speaker 2: formerly known as Touchy Thompson, out on al Dia Drive. Oh,
[20:57] Speaker 2: then you're turning this whole thing over to the police.
[21:00] Speaker 2: Steakeout'll be me. What if Thompson did set that fire
[21:03] Speaker 2: and killed Morales? I still have to prove it. But
[21:05] Speaker 2: don't you think it's a little dangerous Johnny? It could
[21:07] Speaker 2: be well in just a minute. Thanks Marie, Thanks a lot.
[21:14] Speaker 2: So I went out to Aldea Drive again and I
[21:16] Speaker 2: parked myself rather uncomfortably behind a hedge across the street
[21:19] Speaker 2: from Thompson's place. Funny it must have been around ten pm.
[21:23] Speaker 2: An expensive car pulled up and a man loaded with
[21:25] Speaker 2: fishing gear went into the house. I waited a couple
[21:28] Speaker 2: of minutes, and then I went over, knocked on the door,
[21:30] Speaker 2: walked in, introduced myself and laid a few cards right
[21:33] Speaker 2: on the table. Yeah, crazy, Della, I didn't even know
[21:36] Speaker 2: about that fire until you told me.
[21:38] Speaker 3: Just now?
[21:38] Speaker 2: Why lie about it? Touching? Look, I'm in fishing.
[21:41] Speaker 5: Yeah for what?
[21:42] Speaker 2: Alibi? Give me that the trout? Look? Look look here
[21:46] Speaker 2: for the ah trout.
[21:49] Speaker 3: Have you see a nice mess? Him?
[21:51] Speaker 2: Pick him up? It anymore? Not me? All right? Who
[21:55] Speaker 2: was with you? I was alone. I was over there
[21:58] Speaker 2: camp beside the lake all the time. I'm my sleeping
[22:01] Speaker 2: bag still out in the car. What lake Mono Lake.
[22:04] Speaker 2: It's a little over two hundred miles easter here. Yeah,
[22:06] Speaker 2: I know it. Wow, well that's why I caught him.
[22:10] Speaker 2: I know it well enough to know that because of
[22:12] Speaker 2: the high mineral content of that water, no trout could
[22:16] Speaker 2: ever survive in it. What huh? Hello, Wait a minute,
[22:19] Speaker 2: it's no good, Touchy. And with the proof I have
[22:22] Speaker 2: that only you could have set that fire with some
[22:24] Speaker 2: of your fancy chemicals. What do you know about that?
[22:27] Speaker 2: You got you got the proof? Look, haf she has Touchy. Well,
[22:32] Speaker 2: I'm glad to see you two know each other very smart.
[22:36] Speaker 2: Weren't you Touchy? What do you mean? I mean the
[22:39] Speaker 2: way you fell for that phony news broadcast and came
[22:42] Speaker 2: back here and Dollar, thanks for setting the stage for me. Yeah,
[22:48] Speaker 2: what does that mean? You came here because you suspected Touchy.
[22:52] Speaker 2: You had a big argument, you both pulled your guns
[22:54] Speaker 2: and killed each other. No, no, what's the only conclusion
[22:59] Speaker 2: the police can pass reached when they find your buddies lying?
[23:02] Speaker 2: Look now, don't make a single move. Dollar, Neither of
[23:07] Speaker 2: you will do anything because five seconds from now you'll
[23:09] Speaker 2: both be dead. Sway, You're wrong? What all that trigger?
[23:14] Speaker 2: Barn William's the last thing you'll ever do, Bill Flim
[23:17] Speaker 2: Just when the boys take care of you, Irison, I
[23:22] Speaker 2: need for violence, officer. Yes, my barn will there is well, Johnny, Now,
[23:30] Speaker 2: just one under the sun ever led you to come
[23:32] Speaker 2: out here? Bill? Your old friend Smoky Sullivan call me
[23:36] Speaker 2: to the hospital. He was a little worried about you.
[23:40] Speaker 2: You mind mine? You gotta be kidding. Yeah. They were
[23:49] Speaker 2: both in it up to their ears, each and trying
[23:52] Speaker 2: to defend himself. Just put the other in that much
[23:54] Speaker 2: deeper and by the time the courts get through with them,
[23:57] Speaker 2: they'll be sorry they ever lived. Expense account total including
[24:01] Speaker 2: the trip back to Hartford and a good hefty gratuity
[24:03] Speaker 2: for Smoky Sullivan plus all his hospital bills nine twenty
[24:07] Speaker 2: three ninety one. Yours truly, Johnny Deller. Our star will
[24:25] Speaker 2: return in just a moment. Yeah, I'm a mean widow kid,
[24:30] Speaker 2: And are you pleased with yourself?
[24:32] Speaker 7: Sure?
[24:32] Speaker 12: Because I'm a germ a bathroom germs. Bathrooms is where
[24:37] Speaker 12: the meanest germs get to wear ha ha. Do I
[24:40] Speaker 12: have fun causing odor and spreading the team?
[24:43] Speaker 2: Are you better watch out? Sona? Your landlady may find
[24:46] Speaker 2: out about Lysol brand disinfectant why sauce? Oh, Lysol?
[24:51] Speaker 3: That's what I said?
[24:52] Speaker 2: Why saw? Well? Anyway, a lot of women are finding
[24:55] Speaker 2: that a dash of lysol in their cleaning sauce every
[24:58] Speaker 2: week wipes out nasty bath room disease germs like you
[25:01] Speaker 2: disinfect from one cleaning to the next. As no other
[25:04] Speaker 2: product can wipes out many deadly viruses too. Lisol makes
[25:08] Speaker 2: every cleaner work better. It's the easy modern way to
[25:11] Speaker 2: get bathrooms really clean and free of odors.
[25:14] Speaker 3: Why sall can do that?
[25:16] Speaker 2: And what's more? Now, besides regularly saw, there's a new
[25:19] Speaker 2: sweet smelling, pine scented lysol and they're both out to
[25:23] Speaker 2: get you. Hey, were you ever a mean widow kid?
[25:27] Speaker 2: One more remark like that? And I'll open this bottle
[25:30] Speaker 2: of lysol. Now here's our star. I tell you about
[25:36] Speaker 2: next week's story. Next week, A quiet little ranch in Oklahoma,
[25:40] Speaker 2: quiet that is until the shooting starts. Join us, won't
[25:44] Speaker 2: you yours? Truly? Shiny dollar yours truly? Johnny starring Bob Bailey,
[26:01] Speaker 2: originates in Hollywood and has written, produced, and directed by
[26:05] Speaker 2: Jack Johnstog. Heard in our cast were Virginia, Greg vic Parn,
[26:10] Speaker 2: Larry Dobkin, Alan Red Gil Stratton Junior, Paul Duba, Bartlett Robinson,
[26:15] Speaker 2: Don Moseley, and Tony Barrett. Be sure to join us
[26:18] Speaker 2: next week, same time and station for another exciting story
[26:22] Speaker 2: of yours, truly, Johnny Dollary. This is Dan Coberly speaking.
[26:26] Speaker 2: This is the CBS Radio Network, Welcome back.
[26:29] Speaker 1: I had to chuckle when Johnny mentioned that the paper
[26:34] Speaker 1: he was from was in Bums Bom, Oklahoma, a reference
[26:39] Speaker 1: to the hometown of Durango, Laramie. Another one of those
[26:44] Speaker 1: deep cuts that we talked about last week. I do
[26:48] Speaker 1: question a bit the newspapers covering his involvement in the case.
[26:53] Speaker 1: It does add to the nationwide celebrity of Johnny through
[26:59] Speaker 1: the radio, but it also raises concerns, increases some of
[27:04] Speaker 1: the suspension of disbelief you have to have when he
[27:09] Speaker 1: tries to be more anonymous about things. And of course
[27:13] Speaker 1: we got a little bit of a shout out to
[27:15] Speaker 1: radio station KCBS, which began broadcasting in nineteen oh nine, although,
[27:23] Speaker 1: as John Abbott notes in his great book The Who
[27:28] Speaker 1: Is Johnny Dollar Matter, that there is some dispute over
[27:32] Speaker 1: who exactly started the first radio station in the United States.
[27:37] Speaker 1: But this sort of service to the radio stations is
[27:41] Speaker 1: one of those hallmarks of the Johnstone era and certainly
[27:46] Speaker 1: was a way I think to keep radio drama still
[27:50] Speaker 1: relevant and rooted to the audience. Television by now had
[27:55] Speaker 1: vastly surpassed radio in terms of the ten of the
[28:00] Speaker 1: American people, but this is kind of a way to
[28:04] Speaker 1: really tie it back into the local stations and into
[28:09] Speaker 1: the real world in a way that you just weren't
[28:12] Speaker 1: going to have on television. Now it's time to thank
[28:16] Speaker 1: our Patreon supporter of the day, and I want to
[28:18] Speaker 1: go ahead and thank Monica, Patreon supporter since March twenty nineteen,
[28:24] Speaker 1: currently supporting the podcast at the Master Detective level of
[28:28] Speaker 1: fifteen dollars or more per month. Thanks so much for
[28:31] Speaker 1: your support, Monica, and that will do it for today.

[28:50] Speaker 1: But join us back here tomorrow as we give way
[28:52] Speaker 1: to the great adventurers of old time radio and Counterspy.
[28:57] Speaker 5: Where comn missus Peters counters five Plane one bound to Mexico.
[29:07] Speaker 2: Victoria is about forty.
[29:09] Speaker 3: Miles north of the uranium discovery.
[29:12] Speaker 2: You don't want to stay in Victoria. There's another town
[29:14] Speaker 2: forty miles to the south of the uranium field of
[29:17] Speaker 2: better you would, even though, how I can get rooms
[29:19] Speaker 2: there in a rank house.
[29:20] Speaker 5: That would be fun for a while. We want to
[29:22] Speaker 5: keep under cover.
[29:24] Speaker 3: That's all.
[29:26] Speaker 2: Our number of theaters.
[29:27] Speaker 3: I'm amplying to Mexico at your request.
[29:29] Speaker 5: I brought along this map of Mexico, Matadi. I'd like
[29:32] Speaker 5: to show you.
[29:34] Speaker 2: The publicity that's gotten.
[29:35] Speaker 5: One of the papers about a uranium deposit in Mexico
[29:38] Speaker 5: has certainly scounted something. What did the reports of the
[29:42] Speaker 5: Mexican polifs say about it?
[29:43] Speaker 2: There?
[29:43] Speaker 5: The port said that persons of questionable character were flocking
[29:46] Speaker 5: to Victoria.
[29:48] Speaker 2: Victoria.
[29:48] Speaker 3: Let's right here on the map.
[29:51] Speaker 5: Huh Unless I'm is my guest, barn agents are swarming
[29:54] Speaker 5: there like flies.
[29:54] Speaker 2: To my lass.
[29:57] Speaker 5: What are you talking about.
[29:57] Speaker 2: This for me? Yes? You, oh I am.
[30:01] Speaker 3: I was thinking of a funny story.
[30:04] Speaker 2: You've got something up here sleeve.
[30:06] Speaker 3: Somehow, Peters.
[30:07] Speaker 2: I have a hunch the hunts they are going to
[30:09] Speaker 2: become very interesting development in those mountains within the next
[30:12] Speaker 2: few days.
