[0:28] Speaker 1: Welcome to the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio from Boise, Idaho.
[0:34] Speaker 1: This is your host, Adam Graham. In a moment, we're
[0:38] Speaker 1: going to bring you this week's episode of Dragnet. But
[0:41] Speaker 1: first I want to go ahead and dedicate this episode
[0:44] Speaker 1: to the memory of Peggy Weber. Miss Weber passed away
[0:49] Speaker 1: on August fifteenth, at the age of one hundred. She
[0:53] Speaker 1: was strongly associated with Dragnant and Jack Webb, appearing in
[0:58] Speaker 1: numerous episodes of the radio series, the nineteen fifties TV series,
[1:05] Speaker 1: and the nineteen sixties TV series. And I don't think
[1:08] Speaker 1: we know the half of her work on these programs
[1:13] Speaker 1: because cast lists were often not used on episodes of
[1:18] Speaker 1: Dragnet for radio announcements, and there are around two hundred
[1:23] Speaker 1: TV episodes from the nineteen fifties that are missing. But
[1:27] Speaker 1: her work went far beyond drag Ma. And we'll talk
[1:30] Speaker 1: a little bit more about Peggy Eber after today's program.
[1:34] Speaker 1: But now, from May the twenty second, nineteen fifty two,
[1:40] Speaker 1: here is the Big Shakedown.
[1:51] Speaker 2: The story you were about to hear is true. The
[1:54] Speaker 2: names have been changed to protect the innocent. You're a
[2:05] Speaker 2: detective sergeant. You're assigned the Wilshire Division Vice Detail. An
[2:09] Speaker 2: informant sends you a word about an extortion racket going
[2:12] Speaker 2: on in your area.
[2:14] Speaker 3: The victim a bookmaker, the suspect a police officer. Your job.
[2:19] Speaker 2: Check it out.
[2:30] Speaker 4: Dragnet the documented drama of an actual crime. For the
[2:34] Speaker 4: next thirty minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
[2:38] Speaker 4: you will travel step by step on the side of
[2:40] Speaker 4: the law through an actual case transcribed from official police files.
[2:44] Speaker 4: From beginning to end, from crime to punishment, Dragnet is
[2:48] Speaker 4: the story of your police force and action.
[2:56] Speaker 5: It was Tuesday, October eighteenth, was hot in Los Angeles.
[2:59] Speaker 5: We're working day watch out of Wilshire Division Vice Detail.
[3:02] Speaker 5: My partner's Frank Smith. The boss is Captain Hayes.
[3:05] Speaker 3: My name is Friday. We're on our way downtown from
[3:07] Speaker 3: the office.
[3:08] Speaker 5: And it was nine thirty five am when we got
[3:10] Speaker 5: to the Felony section of the main jail.
[3:12] Speaker 3: The interview room sat down, starts. Got your message when
[3:19] Speaker 3: we checked in this morning. What's it about?
[3:20] Speaker 6: Well, I finally made up my mind.
[3:22] Speaker 3: I've had enough of this.
[3:23] Speaker 7: Say either one of you guys a cigarette. I left
[3:25] Speaker 7: mine back in the cell. Yeah, sure, you're your once Oh. Thanks,
[3:30] Speaker 7: there's a match for you.
[3:33] Speaker 3: Now, what's the story? What's on your mind?
[3:36] Speaker 7: Well, I've been thinking about it most of the night.
[3:39] Speaker 7: I didn't get very much sleep.
[3:41] Speaker 6: So you remember yesterday, I mean, I mean when you
[3:44] Speaker 6: arrested me.
[3:45] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[3:46] Speaker 6: Well, it's just like I told you then. I'm not
[3:48] Speaker 6: trying to kid anybody.
[3:49] Speaker 3: I admit it.
[3:50] Speaker 7: I've been taking a few bets. It wasn't any big
[3:52] Speaker 7: operation though, you know, they just laying off.
[3:55] Speaker 6: A few bets. My friends and all people in the.
[3:58] Speaker 3: Neighborhood we know all that once we went through that yesterday.
[4:00] Speaker 6: Yeah, I know.
[4:01] Speaker 7: I just wanted to make sure we got it straight.
[4:04] Speaker 7: We weren't any big operators. We just ran the book
[4:06] Speaker 7: making as a sideline.
[4:09] Speaker 6: Business hasn't been too good lately. Had to make it
[4:12] Speaker 6: up somehow.
[4:13] Speaker 3: Sorry, Lawrence, we can't feel bad about it. If you
[4:14] Speaker 3: were attacked for making book before, you should have learned
[4:16] Speaker 3: your lesson.
[4:17] Speaker 7: Oh, I know, I know. I'm not seeing the blues.
[4:19] Speaker 7: I'm not trying an alabam. I didn't call it down
[4:21] Speaker 7: here for that.
[4:21] Speaker 3: I don't know what's it's all about.
[4:23] Speaker 7: Well, like I told you, I didn't thinking about a lot.
[4:26] Speaker 7: I didn't sleep hardly at all. Last night I finally
[4:28] Speaker 7: made up my mind though I'm gonna get off my
[4:31] Speaker 7: chest and it kills me. All right, what's that? I know, Stuie.
[4:35] Speaker 7: I don't want to get in about in trouble because
[4:37] Speaker 7: one thing I believe in, and that's playing a square matter.
[4:39] Speaker 6: What you do, just like now, I didn't.
[4:42] Speaker 3: I ain't beaven about the rest. You know, man, what
[4:44] Speaker 3: do you get mat what do you want to tell us? Oh?
[4:46] Speaker 6: All right, here it is.
[4:48] Speaker 3: You know what the record is.
[4:49] Speaker 7: I stood a pinch for book making a year and
[4:51] Speaker 7: a half ago. I got the thing all squared away
[4:54] Speaker 7: and it came back from my business. I learned my lesson.
[4:57] Speaker 7: I didn't want any more trouble, so I I laid
[5:00] Speaker 7: off the books. All right, tell us in what about
[5:02] Speaker 7: this policeman. I'm getting to it just a minute. Say
[5:05] Speaker 7: I'm sorry you've been a.
[5:06] Speaker 6: Cigarette please, I'm I'm gonna jump it this morning.
[5:11] Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll tell you.
[5:12] Speaker 6: Thanks, Oh thanks a lot.
[5:19] Speaker 7: Well, like I was saying, you know, when I kid
[5:21] Speaker 7: up the last beef, I forgot all about the horses.
[5:24] Speaker 6: I was offul for good. My wife made me promise
[5:27] Speaker 6: I wouldn't have anything more to do.
[5:29] Speaker 3: With him. We just run the business, you know, live
[5:31] Speaker 3: on what they made and.
[5:32] Speaker 6: We'd get along fine.
[5:34] Speaker 7: All right, go ahead, Everything was going fine. Two business
[5:37] Speaker 7: wasn't too good, but we made out. Then the trouble started.
[5:40] Speaker 7: You know, my oldest boy, that's Harry Jr. He had
[5:44] Speaker 7: an accident on the job and he broke his hip.
[5:47] Speaker 7: I had to help his family off while he was
[5:49] Speaker 7: in the hospital. Like I say, the business wasn't making
[5:51] Speaker 7: too much money, but we.
[5:53] Speaker 3: Made out though. Then go ahead.
[5:56] Speaker 8: Yeah.
[5:56] Speaker 7: Well, then just as soon as Harry got well, the
[5:59] Speaker 7: wife came know, gol Blader. She had to have an operation,
[6:04] Speaker 7: but it costs money, you know. Well, my wife was
[6:07] Speaker 7: resting at home. She didn't come down to the store.
[6:11] Speaker 7: I started with the books again, you know, just taking
[6:14] Speaker 7: a few bets on the side, just a few. I
[6:17] Speaker 7: didn't really want to do it, just one of those things,
[6:20] Speaker 7: you know.
[6:20] Speaker 6: I didn't have anybody to go to. The bills had
[6:23] Speaker 6: to be paid.
[6:24] Speaker 3: Where is this policeman fit in with this? Ray?
[6:25] Speaker 2: Wod you?
[6:26] Speaker 6: I'm just coming to it.
[6:28] Speaker 7: Yeah, well, he came to the story. He said he
[6:29] Speaker 7: wanted to make a bet. I didn't know him from Adam,
[6:32] Speaker 7: so I played capitul. You know, I told him I
[6:35] Speaker 7: wasn't making book And then he said he was a
[6:37] Speaker 7: good friend of Myra's.
[6:39] Speaker 3: Myra.
[6:40] Speaker 7: That's a that's a guy runs with you to Pollo
[6:42] Speaker 7: on Crenshaw. She used to make books, but she hasn't.
[6:45] Speaker 6: Now we know the spot. Well, when he said that
[6:48] Speaker 6: he knew Myra, I think he was all right.
[6:49] Speaker 3: So I took the bet. That's that's when it started.
[6:53] Speaker 6: As soon as he makes the bet, he comes out
[6:55] Speaker 6: and says he's a couple working for Vice.
[6:57] Speaker 3: I thought he was just kidding.
[6:59] Speaker 1: And he he.
[7:00] Speaker 6: Flashes this identification what.
[7:01] Speaker 3: Kind of identification bag? What kind of a badge? Well,
[7:05] Speaker 3: I don't know it. The badge looked all right, and
[7:09] Speaker 3: I'd have a look at this one. Here was it
[7:11] Speaker 3: like this one?
[7:12] Speaker 6: M I don't know. I didn't get too good a
[7:15] Speaker 6: look at. It might have been something like that.
[7:17] Speaker 9: I don't know.
[7:18] Speaker 3: You ask for any other identification he volunteered to show
[7:20] Speaker 3: you any? No, No, I didn't ask many. I was scared.
[7:24] Speaker 7: I just figured I was arrested again. That's all he
[7:27] Speaker 7: seemed to know. All about the first page I stood
[7:29] Speaker 7: for making books. He told me that I'd been operating
[7:31] Speaker 7: for about a month and a half. He said he
[7:33] Speaker 7: had his eye on.
[7:34] Speaker 3: What did he do after he told he was a policeman.
[7:36] Speaker 7: Well, I started to explain to him how the things
[7:39] Speaker 7: shaped up while I was making books again, how I
[7:41] Speaker 7: had to pay up those doctors bills. I tried the
[7:44] Speaker 7: bag off. I told him that I put right now.
[7:47] Speaker 7: Then he turns on and tells me, I don't have
[7:49] Speaker 7: to What do you mean, Well, that's just what he said.
[7:52] Speaker 8: He didn't.
[7:52] Speaker 7: He didn't make sense to me either, and he went
[7:55] Speaker 7: all he told me I was operating in his destiny.
[7:58] Speaker 7: He said, be okay, if I went right along the
[8:01] Speaker 7: way I was. He see there that I didn't stand
[8:05] Speaker 7: any pinches, Yes, sir.
[8:06] Speaker 3: What else he said?
[8:08] Speaker 7: Well, he said he wasn't the only one who'd have
[8:11] Speaker 7: to be taken care of. He said there was his partner,
[8:13] Speaker 7: and then a couple of guys over him. Me, he'd
[8:17] Speaker 7: have to be taken care of too. He said the
[8:19] Speaker 7: juice would cost me one hundred bucks a week. I
[8:21] Speaker 7: tried to explain to him that that well, I told him,
[8:24] Speaker 7: and I wasn't operating big, I was just on the side.
[8:27] Speaker 7: I said, I wasn't making that much a week or
[8:29] Speaker 7: but all I was doing is about fifty. That's all
[8:31] Speaker 7: just fifty. Then he said, well, he says, all right,
[8:33] Speaker 7: if that's if that's the way you feel about it,
[8:36] Speaker 7: I'll just take you down book you now. Well I
[8:41] Speaker 7: told him I didn't want to stand the pinch again,
[8:43] Speaker 7: and I'd do the best I could. So he finally said,
[8:45] Speaker 7: I'll give you two weeks to go ahead and open
[8:48] Speaker 7: this thing up. He said, I'd have to do more
[8:50] Speaker 7: business because the jewe was just going to cost me
[8:52] Speaker 7: a hundred a week.
[8:53] Speaker 6: He didn't care how I got it.
[8:55] Speaker 3: This policeman told you to go ahead and open up
[8:57] Speaker 3: for a hundred a week. He could go ahead and
[8:58] Speaker 3: make book and nobody. Boy, Yeah, did your wife ever
[9:01] Speaker 3: see this policeman in the speller? Williams.
[9:03] Speaker 6: Yes, Yes, she saw him.
[9:04] Speaker 3: She saw him a couple of times.
[9:06] Speaker 7: She saw me show me give him the money the
[9:08] Speaker 7: windows start hmm about the first of July.
[9:13] Speaker 6: Paid one hundred dollars every week in stand. See, I'm
[9:18] Speaker 6: I'm all.
[9:18] Speaker 7: The stratchy fellaws picked me up on the stand.
[9:20] Speaker 6: He's he was running into the ground.
[9:22] Speaker 3: He had me in the buying. He said. The man's
[9:24] Speaker 3: name is Ray Williams. Yeah, that's that's he said he
[9:27] Speaker 3: had a partner. Did you ever see him?
[9:29] Speaker 6: No, No, I never did.
[9:30] Speaker 3: Did Williams ever come in with anybody? Did you ever
[9:32] Speaker 3: see him with anybody?
[9:33] Speaker 6: Well?
[9:33] Speaker 3: Was it?
[9:34] Speaker 1: No?
[9:34] Speaker 7: No, matter of fact, I never did. One time I
[9:36] Speaker 7: asked him whose partner was? He says, none of my business.
[9:39] Speaker 6: What kind of a car does he drive? I never
[9:42] Speaker 6: came to my place in the car. He always walked.
[9:44] Speaker 3: He came on foot. You know anything else about him?
[9:46] Speaker 3: Where's he lived? I don't know.
[9:48] Speaker 6: He never told me.
[9:49] Speaker 7: He never told me anything. You see nothing. Once I
[9:52] Speaker 7: asked him what station he was working out of, who
[9:54] Speaker 7: his boss was. He got a little hard with me.
[9:57] Speaker 7: He told me not to get nosy, not to ask
[9:59] Speaker 7: so many questions or anything else.
[10:00] Speaker 5: You can tell us about Williams. Maybe where he hangs
[10:02] Speaker 5: out people. He knows anything you figure.
[10:04] Speaker 7: Will help us well, works South Wilshire. You are going
[10:09] Speaker 7: Ray Williams. Yeah, Williams the policeman, not in my book.
[10:17] Speaker 5: Frank and I continued questioning the prisoner Harold Lawrence, and
[10:20] Speaker 5: he gave us a complete description of the extortionist.
[10:22] Speaker 3: The man he knew his.
[10:23] Speaker 5: Officer, Ray Williams. Frank got on the phone notified the
[10:26] Speaker 5: commander of Internal Affairs Division of the latest development, and
[10:29] Speaker 5: he advised us to bring the prisoner to his office immediately.
[10:33] Speaker 5: We signed Lawrence out of the main jail for investigation
[10:35] Speaker 5: and took him to the City Hall Room thirty seven.
[10:38] Speaker 5: With the help of Sergeants Lloyd Reiner and Floyd Phillips,
[10:41] Speaker 5: we started checking through the personnel files for the suspect.
[10:45] Speaker 3: Neither Frank nor myself recognized.
[10:47] Speaker 5: The name or the description of Williams has given us
[10:49] Speaker 5: by Lawrence. The first step was to show the prisoner
[10:52] Speaker 5: photographs of every police officer in the department, regardless of
[10:55] Speaker 5: rank or detail.
[10:57] Speaker 3: He was unable to make an identification.
[10:59] Speaker 5: Then showed him photographs of all police officers retired or otherwise.
[11:03] Speaker 5: He failed to identify any of them as Williams. We
[11:06] Speaker 5: showed him photographs of all civilian employees of the department,
[11:09] Speaker 5: again no identification. He wasn't able to find anyone who
[11:13] Speaker 5: even closely resembled the extortionist. Not satisfied with this, the
[11:17] Speaker 5: prisoner was shown photographs of all law enforcement agencies personnel
[11:21] Speaker 5: in the area. The same results, no identification. Four eighteen PM.
[11:27] Speaker 5: While Ryner and Phillips continued checking on their end. We
[11:30] Speaker 5: returned the prisoner to the main jail, and then Frank
[11:32] Speaker 5: and I drove out to see his wife, missus Mildred Lawrence.
[11:35] Speaker 5: We located her at Lawrence's place of business, a small
[11:38] Speaker 5: pet shop just off Wiltshire Boulevard.
[11:41] Speaker 6: What is it this time?
[11:42] Speaker 8: Haven't we got enough trouble? What do you want now?
[11:44] Speaker 3: We just got through talking your husband, ma'am. A few
[11:46] Speaker 3: things we'd like to clear up. I'd like to talk
[11:48] Speaker 3: to you a few minutes if we could.
[11:49] Speaker 8: We talked to Harry.
[11:50] Speaker 1: How is he?
[11:50] Speaker 3: He's all right, ma'am. We've been with him all day.
[11:52] Speaker 3: We're still looking into the case.
[11:53] Speaker 8: Why can't you let him alone? He admitted what he
[11:55] Speaker 8: was doing.
[11:55] Speaker 6: He wasn't lying.
[11:56] Speaker 10: He told you everything.
[11:57] Speaker 3: Yes, man, we appreciate that.
[11:58] Speaker 8: We wanted to let him alone. Let me alone. Trouble,
[12:01] Speaker 8: that's all we've had, sickness and trouble, no end of it.
[12:04] Speaker 5: Well, we realize that, Miss Lawrence. We don't like to
[12:06] Speaker 5: body you, but there's something we have to straighten out.
[12:07] Speaker 8: I haven't anything to tell you.
[12:09] Speaker 6: I'm busy.
[12:10] Speaker 10: I have to alone here to run the store. No help,
[12:13] Speaker 10: I'm sick. Shouldn't even be down here, let us.
[12:16] Speaker 8: Alone, Let me alone. Harry was wrong, You'll pay for it.
[12:18] Speaker 8: We're not asking you for anything.
[12:19] Speaker 3: We're asking you for something, ma'am. We'd like you to
[12:21] Speaker 3: help us, help you.
[12:24] Speaker 10: Why policemen all alike? But as I'm concerned, you're nothing
[12:27] Speaker 10: but trouble. Reason for all our trouble.
[12:29] Speaker 3: Well, that's what we'd like to talk to you about, ma'am.
[12:31] Speaker 8: I haven't anything to say. I told you I'm a
[12:33] Speaker 8: sick woman. Got a lot of work to do.
[12:35] Speaker 10: You mind stepping aside. There got this whole ben of
[12:38] Speaker 10: dog through the package up. Can't just stand around and talk.
[12:42] Speaker 8: Poor little pups have to be fair. Haven't even cleaned
[12:44] Speaker 8: the litter yet.
[12:45] Speaker 5: We appreciate how you feel, is Lawrence. We won't take
[12:48] Speaker 5: up too much of your time. Can't you give us
[12:49] Speaker 5: just a few minutes now?
[12:50] Speaker 8: You listen to me. I've tried to be nice to you.
[12:52] Speaker 8: I've got no reason to either.
[12:54] Speaker 10: I could tell you a lot of things about policemen,
[12:56] Speaker 10: things you wouldn't want to listen to.
[12:58] Speaker 8: I think you're so smart. Maybe Harry was doing.
[13:01] Speaker 6: Wrong, but he's not the only one. I could tell
[13:03] Speaker 6: you plenty if I wanted, well, that's.
[13:04] Speaker 3: What we're here for, ma'am. We told you we were
[13:06] Speaker 3: with your husband all day, and.
[13:07] Speaker 8: Why don't you let me alone?
[13:09] Speaker 10: Talked to one cop already today. I told him to
[13:10] Speaker 10: stay away, and you do the same. I told him
[13:12] Speaker 10: just what I thought of him, low down thief.
[13:15] Speaker 3: Who was this policeman you talked to today?
[13:17] Speaker 8: You know who he is.
[13:18] Speaker 10: It's the same place with you, big honest policeman. You'll
[13:22] Speaker 10: never do anything wrong.
[13:24] Speaker 8: That Ray Williams out.
[13:25] Speaker 3: To be in jail, just like Harry. Is Ray Williams.
[13:27] Speaker 3: That the man who was here today.
[13:28] Speaker 6: It's what I said, wasn't it. No, you get out
[13:30] Speaker 6: of here now.
[13:30] Speaker 5: Look, m miss Lawrence, just a minute please. We talked
[13:33] Speaker 5: to your husband and he told us all about this
[13:34] Speaker 5: man Williams.
[13:35] Speaker 8: Why don't you do something about it. We'll get him
[13:37] Speaker 8: and put him in jail, just like you did Harry.
[13:39] Speaker 3: That's what we're trying to do, if you'll just help us.
[13:41] Speaker 3: Williams isn't the policeman?
[13:42] Speaker 6: What do you mean?
[13:43] Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am, that's what we've been trying to tell you.
[13:45] Speaker 3: We talked to your husband. He told us the whole story.
[13:47] Speaker 8: How can you tell how do you know he's not
[13:49] Speaker 8: a policeman.
[13:49] Speaker 3: He's not, ma'am. We're sure of that.
[13:51] Speaker 8: Harry said he was showed Harry is badge.
[13:53] Speaker 5: Well, it doesn't make him a policeman, ma'am. We had
[13:56] Speaker 5: your husband look at pictures of every officer in this area.
[13:58] Speaker 5: He convinced himself Williams isn't a policeman.
[14:01] Speaker 9: If he isn't a policeman, who is he?
[14:03] Speaker 3: That's so we wanna find out why he help us.
[14:06] Speaker 3: This is Larnce.
[14:07] Speaker 10: You'll have to excuse me. I didn't mean to be nasty,
[14:11] Speaker 10: just that I've been sick. He's trouble.
[14:13] Speaker 8: Harry in jail.
[14:14] Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am, we understand that. And you say Williams was
[14:17] Speaker 3: here today about what time was that?
[14:19] Speaker 8: It was before lunch, about eleven thirty quarter to twelve.
[14:21] Speaker 8: I think he came here to get money.
[14:23] Speaker 6: That's what he always came for.
[14:24] Speaker 3: Did he save me back?
[14:26] Speaker 8: No?
[14:26] Speaker 10: I told him never to come back. Told him Harry
[14:28] Speaker 10: was in jail. All the money we gave him, what
[14:30] Speaker 10: good did it do?
[14:32] Speaker 9: That?
[14:32] Speaker 8: I'd go to the city Hall if he ever came back.
[14:34] Speaker 3: What he say to that.
[14:35] Speaker 8: Said, Harry had to expect an arrest now. And then
[14:38] Speaker 8: I told him. Harry wasn't gonna get arrested anymore.
[14:40] Speaker 10: He was through with all that junk. People like him too,
[14:42] Speaker 10: uh huh. Then he swore at me, trought me some
[14:45] Speaker 10: real nasty names, told me I'd better keep my mouth shutter.
[14:48] Speaker 10: I'd get worse than Harry did. Then he went out
[14:50] Speaker 10: and slammed the door.
[14:51] Speaker 3: Was he driving a car? Did you notice?
[14:53] Speaker 6: No?
[14:53] Speaker 8: I never saw him in one.
[14:54] Speaker 3: There anything you know about Williams at all? I mean,
[14:56] Speaker 3: anything that would help us locate him? Maybe?
[14:58] Speaker 10: No, I don't think so. All I know is he
[15:02] Speaker 10: said he was a policeman. His name was Ray Williams.
[15:05] Speaker 10: Couldn't Harry tell you anything? Maybe he knews?
[15:06] Speaker 3: No, ma'am, he couldn't tell us much. Excuse me, please,
[15:10] Speaker 3: that's weird.
[15:12] Speaker 8: All it's his pet shop?
[15:14] Speaker 1: Yes, but that.
[15:17] Speaker 6: Well?
[15:18] Speaker 1: What Hello?
[15:22] Speaker 3: She hung up, ma'am.
[15:24] Speaker 6: It was Ray Williams.
[15:26] Speaker 8: Said he just drove by here, he saw us.
[15:28] Speaker 3: What do you want?
[15:29] Speaker 9: Said?
[15:29] Speaker 10: He saw me talking to you. He knows your policeman.
[15:32] Speaker 10: Told me to keep my mouth shut. Said if I don't,
[15:33] Speaker 10: he's coming back.
[15:34] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[15:35] Speaker 9: He said he'd kill me.
[15:39] Speaker 3: Before we left.
[15:40] Speaker 5: We called in and arranged for a twenty four hour
[15:42] Speaker 5: stakeout on Lawrence's pet shop and also on the Lawrence
[15:45] Speaker 5: home until the suspect was apprehended. She would be given
[15:48] Speaker 5: a twenty four hour protection The next day, we picked
[15:51] Speaker 5: up Missus Lawrence and brought her downtown to the City
[15:53] Speaker 5: Hall Room twenty three, and she was unable to identify
[15:56] Speaker 5: any of the photographs of police officers in the area.
[15:59] Speaker 5: In addition of the personnel photographs, Missus Lawrence also went
[16:02] Speaker 5: through a group of pictures which Sergeants Reiner and Phillips.
[16:05] Speaker 3: Came up with.
[16:06] Speaker 5: They'd had a run made through the Stat's office on
[16:08] Speaker 5: all known extortionists using the same m O.
[16:10] Speaker 3: Williams used.
[16:11] Speaker 5: Posing as a police officer from this group, Both mister
[16:15] Speaker 5: and Missus Lawrence gave us two partial identifications.
[16:18] Speaker 3: Both men were picked up, questioned, and eliminated.
[16:21] Speaker 5: Meantime, we'd gotten not a local broadcast and the teletype
[16:24] Speaker 5: was sent to George Barton's CII Sacramento asking for assistance
[16:27] Speaker 5: and identifying the extortion suspect. The investigation went on two days,
[16:32] Speaker 5: passed no leads in the suspect. In checking on other
[16:35] Speaker 5: possible victims of the extortionist Ray Williams, we drove to
[16:39] Speaker 5: interview Mayra Thomas, operator of a beauty shop out on Crenshaw.
[16:42] Speaker 3: She was a tall, good looking brunette in her early thirties.
[16:46] Speaker 3: This man were looking for miss Thomas, Ray Williams. We
[16:48] Speaker 3: understand he's a friend of yours.
[16:49] Speaker 9: Well, please, sergeant, you've described the man to me. You
[16:51] Speaker 9: told me his name. It doesn't mean a thing to me.
[16:53] Speaker 9: I don't know him.
[16:54] Speaker 3: Woman, how to get your names?
[16:55] Speaker 9: I'm sure I don't know. Sorry, I can't help you.
[16:57] Speaker 3: Well, no, apparently the man knows you, or he knows it.
[17:00] Speaker 9: I don't think I understand you. It makes you think
[17:02] Speaker 9: this man Williams knows me.
[17:04] Speaker 3: We've already told you, ma'am.
[17:05] Speaker 5: Mister Lawrence says that when Ray Williams first approached him,
[17:07] Speaker 5: he used your name as a means of introduction. Now
[17:09] Speaker 5: it's not a coincidence, and you'll admit that.
[17:11] Speaker 9: I just don't understand what it has to do with me.
[17:14] Speaker 9: I know how you feel. I have an idea what
[17:16] Speaker 9: you're thinking. I was in trouble once that book making thing.
[17:19] Speaker 9: I learned my lesson, though I I'm through with that business.
[17:22] Speaker 3: Why not here about that older rest, ma'am. We don't
[17:24] Speaker 3: wanna bother. You just thought you might be able to
[17:25] Speaker 3: help us locate Williams.
[17:26] Speaker 9: I'm sorry, I don't think I can.
[17:28] Speaker 3: Possibly he might've been using another name.
[17:30] Speaker 9: Man, I still wouldn't know him. Description doesn't sound like
[17:33] Speaker 9: anybody I ever knew.
[17:34] Speaker 3: You know the Lawrence is pretty well?
[17:36] Speaker 8: Do you?
[17:36] Speaker 9: Yes? I wouldn't say pretty well, but I do know them.
[17:39] Speaker 3: Have you seen him lately, either one of 'em?
[17:40] Speaker 9: No, I haven't.
[17:41] Speaker 5: You haven't talked with missus Lawrence the last couple of days. No,
[17:44] Speaker 5: Why we thought Missus Lawrence might have told you what
[17:46] Speaker 5: kind of a man this Ray Williams is?
[17:48] Speaker 9: What do you mean what's so bad about posing as
[17:50] Speaker 9: a police.
[17:50] Speaker 3: Well, it's more than that, ma'am.
[17:51] Speaker 5: He telephoned Missus Lawrence threatened her if she talked to
[17:54] Speaker 5: the police about why.
[17:55] Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am, he said he'd kill her. Yes, ma'am, that's right.
[18:00] Speaker 9: Couldn't be. He wouldn't do a thing like that.
[18:02] Speaker 3: You know him that well.
[18:15] Speaker 4: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
[18:19] Speaker 4: force and action.
[18:26] Speaker 5: The idea of an extortionist posing as a policeman to
[18:29] Speaker 5: obtain money certainly was nothing new.
[18:31] Speaker 3: The idea is as old as crime itself.
[18:34] Speaker 5: It's one of the most vicious types of extortion in
[18:36] Speaker 5: the eyes of law enforcement agencies because so many such
[18:39] Speaker 5: cases go unreported to proper authorities by the victims. Usually
[18:43] Speaker 5: the victim is a person of circumstances with something to hide.
[18:46] Speaker 5: The extortionist discovers the person's secret by one means or another,
[18:49] Speaker 5: and he begins the never ending process of draining the
[18:52] Speaker 5: victim of his last dollar, all under the guise of
[18:55] Speaker 5: being a police officer. If the victim's intelligent enough at
[18:59] Speaker 5: the first approach by at the extortionist, he takes the
[19:01] Speaker 5: matter to the proper authorities. If he isn't and he's
[19:04] Speaker 5: lucky enough eventually to escape the extortion trap, he goes
[19:07] Speaker 5: on for the rest of his life believing that a
[19:09] Speaker 5: man who was hired to protect him was the source
[19:12] Speaker 5: of all his trouble, And for the rest of his
[19:14] Speaker 5: life he hangs on to his idea and he passes
[19:17] Speaker 5: it on to others a complete disrespect for law and
[19:20] Speaker 5: law enforcement officers. Saturday October twenty second, two fifteen pm,
[19:25] Speaker 5: Frank Smith and I continued questioning the beauty shop operator
[19:28] Speaker 5: Mayra Thomas.
[19:29] Speaker 3: The more we talk with her, the more we were.
[19:31] Speaker 5: Convinced that she was acquainted with the suspect, Ray Williams.
[19:34] Speaker 5: In order to convince her of the suspect's viciousness, we
[19:37] Speaker 5: drove her over to see Missus Lawrence at the pet shop.
[19:39] Speaker 5: After their talk, we drove Mayra Thomas back to the
[19:42] Speaker 5: beauty shop and she told us the story.
[19:45] Speaker 9: Ges. I have to admit it. He certainly hadn't food.
[19:47] Speaker 9: I thought he was a policeman.
[19:48] Speaker 3: You say he showed you his identification, ma'am. I mean
[19:50] Speaker 3: when he first approached you.
[19:52] Speaker 9: Yes, he showed you a badge. It looked authentic to me.
[19:54] Speaker 9: And the way he talked, the things he said. Thought
[19:56] Speaker 9: he was a policeman. I really did.
[19:58] Speaker 5: Now you've heard our end of the story, Miss Thomas,
[20:00] Speaker 5: you've talked to Missus Lawrence, and you're willing.
[20:02] Speaker 3: To help us.
[20:02] Speaker 9: Now you won't get around, really won't be in the newspapers.
[20:05] Speaker 3: They won't get it from us. Now.
[20:06] Speaker 9: He won't tell my husband, will he? He doesn't have
[20:08] Speaker 9: to know.
[20:09] Speaker 3: All about this, no, ma'am, not bless you want him to?
[20:11] Speaker 9: Well, I don't. Wasn't getting along too well as it is.
[20:14] Speaker 9: Williams is the trouble too, I guess I should've told
[20:17] Speaker 9: you when you first ask me, what's that? Miss? Just
[20:19] Speaker 9: like the Lawrences. I was paying him off too, a
[20:22] Speaker 9: lot longer than the Lawrences. Every week I paid him
[20:24] Speaker 9: and I couldn't tell anyone, couldn't even tell my husband
[20:26] Speaker 9: what's that?
[20:27] Speaker 3: Man?
[20:27] Speaker 9: I guess I thought I was smart, the book making thing,
[20:30] Speaker 9: I mean. Started taking a few bets from the girls
[20:32] Speaker 9: in the shop, just small ones. I didn't mean anything
[20:34] Speaker 9: by it. And this wood News came in one day,
[20:37] Speaker 9: said his girlfriend made a beth with me and he
[20:39] Speaker 9: wanted to place one too.
[20:41] Speaker 3: Did you take it?
[20:42] Speaker 9: Yes, like I told her, I thought I was smart.
[20:44] Speaker 9: As soon as I took the bet, he showed me
[20:46] Speaker 9: the badge, told me he was a police officer. That's
[20:48] Speaker 9: when it started. Same thing, just like the Lawrences.
[20:51] Speaker 3: How about after you arrested miss Thomas. What happened with Williams? Then?
[20:54] Speaker 9: Well, after I got it settled, Williams came back to
[20:57] Speaker 9: the shop again. I told him then I was through
[20:59] Speaker 9: with the horses. Doesn't have anything to do with it again.
[21:02] Speaker 9: After that, I didn't see him for a while.
[21:03] Speaker 3: Sure was glad you've seen him since you know where
[21:05] Speaker 3: we can look at him now?
[21:07] Speaker 9: No, I don't, but I have seen him since though.
[21:09] Speaker 9: You promise me my husband won't know about this.
[21:11] Speaker 8: You give me your word.
[21:12] Speaker 5: Ms Thomas. If you don't want your husband to know
[21:14] Speaker 5: about this, it's your business. You'll never hear it from us.
[21:17] Speaker 9: Got to be that way, believe me. I love my husband.
[21:20] Speaker 9: Ray Williams has caused there's nothing but trouble. Can't tell
[21:23] Speaker 9: you the word he's caused me. I mean, besides all
[21:24] Speaker 9: the money I paid him too.
[21:26] Speaker 3: You mean you're still paying him?
[21:27] Speaker 9: Yes, that's right every week. I don't know how low
[21:30] Speaker 9: that man is. I can't begin to tell you. And
[21:32] Speaker 9: I thought he was a policeman.
[21:33] Speaker 3: Why are you still paying him off? Man? Don't mind
[21:35] Speaker 3: telling him that?
[21:36] Speaker 9: No, I guess I don't mind. I've gone this far alright,
[21:42] Speaker 9: cause while my husband and I were separated, we had
[21:44] Speaker 9: a fight, and we were separated. I started going out
[21:46] Speaker 9: on dates, nothing serious. One night I was out with
[21:49] Speaker 9: a fella from out of town. Nice fella. This Ray
[21:52] Speaker 9: Williams saw me and fellas sitting in the car parking
[21:55] Speaker 9: lot right in back of the bar. Even Nicky Williams
[21:58] Speaker 9: come by and you, I saw him. I see, wasn't
[22:01] Speaker 9: anything wrong?
[22:02] Speaker 6: Really?
[22:02] Speaker 9: I love my husband. He wouldn't understand about the fella
[22:05] Speaker 9: that night though. I mean, if William's ever.
[22:07] Speaker 3: Told him that's what he's been holding over your head,
[22:09] Speaker 3: has he?
[22:10] Speaker 9: Yes, it's more than a year now. I've paid him
[22:12] Speaker 9: every week. I'll tell you the truth, Sergeant. I can't
[22:14] Speaker 9: go on much longer. I can't.
[22:16] Speaker 3: Well, you don't have to worry about it anymore. Just
[22:18] Speaker 3: help us locate the man. That's all you have to
[22:19] Speaker 3: do now.
[22:20] Speaker 9: Oh, I don't know where he lives, but I'm Alwa's
[22:22] Speaker 9: gonna contact me. He always does.
[22:24] Speaker 3: That's what we'd like to know. How does he contact you?
[22:26] Speaker 9: He phones usually once a week, maybe every other week,
[22:29] Speaker 9: calls me and talks me to meet him someplace and
[22:31] Speaker 9: bring the money.
[22:31] Speaker 3: Fifty dollars every week, and you have a regular time
[22:34] Speaker 3: that he calls.
[22:34] Speaker 9: You, No, almost any time. It's never the same day,
[22:37] Speaker 9: never the same place I meet him. I haven't heard
[22:39] Speaker 9: from him in over a week now. He should be
[22:40] Speaker 9: calling pretty soon, I guess MM.
[22:42] Speaker 3: He usually call here? Does he phone you at home?
[22:44] Speaker 9: Both places? He seems to know where to reach me.
[22:47] Speaker 9: I don't know what I'm gonna do this time. I
[22:48] Speaker 9: just don't know.
[22:49] Speaker 3: Ma'am, I haven't got the money for him.
[22:51] Speaker 9: I broke four or five dollars. That's all I have.
[22:53] Speaker 3: Well, don't worry about it.
[22:54] Speaker 9: But he's gonna warn his payoff, you know that. What
[22:56] Speaker 9: am I gonna do this time?
[22:57] Speaker 3: It's on us.
[23:02] Speaker 5: Before we left Mara Thomas at the beauty shop, we
[23:05] Speaker 5: had a definite understanding that as soon as she heard
[23:07] Speaker 5: from the extortionist Ray Williams, she was to call us immediately,
[23:10] Speaker 5: anytime of the day or night. Then we called the
[23:13] Speaker 5: office and made arrangements for stakeouts to be placed both
[23:16] Speaker 5: at the beauty shop and at Myra Thomas's home in
[23:18] Speaker 5: case Williams decided to contact her in person. The Thomas
[23:21] Speaker 5: woman was given a point envelope containing fifty dollars in
[23:24] Speaker 5: mark bills, which he was to hand over to the
[23:26] Speaker 5: suspect the next time he demanded his regular payoff. Two
[23:30] Speaker 5: days went by Tuesday, October twenty fifth, no word on
[23:35] Speaker 5: the suspect. Thursday the twenty seventh, still no word. Saturday morning,
[23:40] Speaker 5: October twenty ninth.
[23:43] Speaker 3: I got it all right, nice detail Smith. How's eh?
[23:48] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, uh huh? I see hold on off pencil, Joe, Yeah,
[23:51] Speaker 3: here you go. How was that place again? Okay, good time?
[24:00] Speaker 3: Surely about half an hour? Yes, man, we'll be there. Goodbye.
[24:03] Speaker 3: When he got Frank anyy? Yeah, Mayra Thomas finn. He
[24:06] Speaker 3: wants to see us. I told her we'd be over
[24:07] Speaker 3: about half an hour. What's the deal, Williams cauler, he
[24:09] Speaker 3: wants his money.
[24:13] Speaker 5: Eleven fifteen am, Frank and I got in the car
[24:15] Speaker 5: and drove out to see Mara Thomas at her apartment.
[24:18] Speaker 3: She told us that the suspect, Ray Williams.
[24:20] Speaker 5: Had telephoned her shortly before eleven o'clock that morning and
[24:23] Speaker 5: set up a date to meet her for his regular
[24:25] Speaker 5: payoff at ten o'clock that night. The designated meeting place
[24:28] Speaker 5: was a small nightclub out on Santa Monica Boulevard. The
[24:31] Speaker 5: Thomas woman was to meet Williams at the bar. We
[24:34] Speaker 5: told her to get there a few minutes ahead of time,
[24:36] Speaker 5: and if she happened to spot Frank and I in
[24:38] Speaker 5: the nightclub, she was to give no sign of recognition
[24:41] Speaker 5: as far as the actual payoff was concerned. We instructed
[24:44] Speaker 5: her to hand over the envelope containing the money to
[24:46] Speaker 5: the suspect when he demanded it without any argument.
[24:49] Speaker 3: Shortly after nine o'clock that night, Frank and I entered
[24:52] Speaker 3: the nightclub and got a table.
[24:53] Speaker 5: Directly adjoining the bar was a modernistic affair lighted from
[24:58] Speaker 5: below with a blue fluorescent lamp.
[25:00] Speaker 3: A four piece orchestra was playing at the rear of
[25:03] Speaker 3: the place.
[25:03] Speaker 5: Nobody was dancing, only a few of the tables were occupied,
[25:07] Speaker 5: but the bar was doing a good business.
[25:09] Speaker 3: We waited nine nine forty five.
[25:13] Speaker 5: We spotted Mayra Thomas as she entered the club. She
[25:16] Speaker 5: went to the far end of the bar, sat down
[25:18] Speaker 5: on one of the stools in ordered a high ball.
[25:21] Speaker 5: Nine fifty ten pm. We kept waiting, ten fifteen, ten thirty,
[25:26] Speaker 5: still no.
[25:27] Speaker 3: Sign of the suspect. We watched Mayra Thomas order another
[25:30] Speaker 3: high ball getting laid to you. You know what time
[25:33] Speaker 3: he got twenty five to eleven. Joe just came in
[25:36] Speaker 3: coming this way, Gray sue, Yeah, huh. What do you
[25:39] Speaker 3: think the description fits, doesn't it? That must be going
[25:42] Speaker 3: up to miss Thomas talking to her. All right, he's
[25:44] Speaker 3: got the envelope a right, just a minute, let's give
[25:46] Speaker 3: him room. He's leaving, going for the front door. What
[25:48] Speaker 3: are you saying? Let's go not wasting any time? Come on,
[25:52] Speaker 3: let's hurry down the street. Come on, hold it. What's
[26:01] Speaker 3: the matter? What do you want? Police officers like to
[26:02] Speaker 3: talk to you me?
[26:03] Speaker 8: What about?
[26:04] Speaker 3: What's the matter? You got your identification? Oh?
[26:05] Speaker 2: Sure, right here?
[26:06] Speaker 6: What do you want?
[26:07] Speaker 3: We'd like to look at it?
[26:08] Speaker 4: Oh sure, hear you?
[26:10] Speaker 3: Oh excuse me. That's your badge? Oh no, it's nothing.
[26:12] Speaker 3: What'd you get that phony badge? Friend of mine? Why?
[26:15] Speaker 3: What's the matter? What do you got in your right
[26:17] Speaker 3: hand pocket? Nothing? Just an envelope? Why the money in
[26:19] Speaker 3: that envelope? Which I said? Is there any money in
[26:22] Speaker 3: an envelope? Currency?
[26:23] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[26:23] Speaker 3: I think so? On what's the difference?
[26:25] Speaker 5: You know the serial numbers on the bills in that envelope,
[26:27] Speaker 5: But I.
[26:27] Speaker 3: Don't know what you mean, serial numbers on their money?
[26:29] Speaker 3: What are you getting at? You got seven pieces of
[26:30] Speaker 3: paper money in that envelope, three ten dollars bills and
[26:32] Speaker 3: four fives?
[26:33] Speaker 6: Yeah?
[26:33] Speaker 3: What about an extortion? Mister? You know the pitch? Now,
[26:36] Speaker 3: come on, let's go now, hold it. Wait a minute,
[26:38] Speaker 3: let's get this straight. Huh So I got an envel
[26:40] Speaker 3: in my pocket, ordinary envelope that's supposed to make me
[26:43] Speaker 3: a criminal?
[26:43] Speaker 5: No, No more than that badge makes you a cop.
[26:45] Speaker 5: Come on, the story you have just heard was true.
[26:56] Speaker 5: The names were changed to protect the innocent.
[26:59] Speaker 4: On January eighth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
[27:02] Speaker 4: eighty six, City in County of Los Angeles, State of California.
[27:05] Speaker 4: In a moment the results of that trial, Raymond Edward
[27:17] Speaker 4: Williams was tried and convicted of extortion one count and
[27:20] Speaker 4: impersonating an officer one count. He received sentences as prescribed
[27:24] Speaker 4: by law and is now serving his term in the
[27:26] Speaker 4: state penitentiary. Extortion is punishable by imprisonment for not less
[27:30] Speaker 4: than one nor more than ten years. Impersonation of an
[27:34] Speaker 4: officer is punishable by a fine if not more than
[27:36] Speaker 4: one thousand dollars, or by imprisonment for not more than
[27:40] Speaker 4: one year, or by both such fine and imprisonment.
[27:44] Speaker 2: Friends, sometime during the next two weeks, you'll be asked
[27:47] Speaker 2: to buy a poppy in memory of those who fought
[27:49] Speaker 2: to keep freedom alive. Give generously when you're asked, and
[27:52] Speaker 2: where your poppy?
[27:53] Speaker 4: Proudly, you have just heard Dragnet a series of authentic
[28:05] Speaker 4: cases from official files. Technical advice comes from the Office
[28:09] Speaker 4: of Chief of Police W. H. Parker, Los Angeles Police
[28:11] Speaker 4: Department Technical Advisors. Captain Jack Donahoe, Sergeant Marty Wynn, Sergeant
[28:16] Speaker 4: Vans Bracer Heard Tonight where herb Ellis Bick Rodman, June Whitley,
[28:20] Speaker 4: Script by Jim Mosic, music by Walter Schumann, Hell give
[28:24] Speaker 4: Me Speaking.
[28:32] Speaker 3: Stay tuned for Counterspy next on MBZ.
[28:44] Speaker 1: Welcome Back. This is a good story, but it's kind
[28:49] Speaker 1: of one of those where the basic tale has been
[28:54] Speaker 1: told better elsewhere, in this case, in episodes like The
[28:59] Speaker 1: Bake Fraud. Nevertheless, I think that this episode does a
[29:05] Speaker 1: good job telling an interesting a case file and also
[29:11] Speaker 1: throwing in information with which a listener could protect himself
[29:17] Speaker 1: from this sort of skin. Well, now let's talk a
[29:19] Speaker 1: little bit more about the career of Peggy Weber. Weber
[29:23] Speaker 1: was not just a great radio voice actress like many others.
[29:29] Speaker 1: Her work extended into television and film. I talked about
[29:34] Speaker 1: all of the appearances she did on the Dragnet TV show,
[29:38] Speaker 1: but it went beyond that. She was also a quite
[29:43] Speaker 1: skilled creator and director. She worked in early television, and
[29:50] Speaker 1: she remained dedicated to audio drama as an art form.
[29:54] Speaker 1: She was part of radio revival programs like the Sears
[29:59] Speaker 1: Radio Theater as that radio revival was kind of losing steam.
[30:05] Speaker 1: In nineteen eighty four, she established the California Artist Radio
[30:10] Speaker 1: Theater and directed and produced a large number of audio dramas.
[30:15] Speaker 1: The figures that I see for the number of works
[30:18] Speaker 1: she did seems to vary a little bit. I've seen
[30:22] Speaker 1: some estimates at one point fifty or at three hundred. Regardless,
[30:27] Speaker 1: it was a remarkable accomplishment, and I think she was
[30:32] Speaker 1: very good at networking and putting together some amazing cast.
[30:38] Speaker 1: If you look at the website of the theater at
[30:41] Speaker 1: courtradio dot com, there's just an impressive array of actors
[30:48] Speaker 1: who are not in the golden age of radio, who
[30:50] Speaker 1: you wouldn't have think would have any audio drama acting experience,
[30:56] Speaker 1: but nevertheless who she was able to get cast again.
[31:00] Speaker 1: Peggy Weber passed away at the age of one hundred
[31:04] Speaker 1: on August fifteenth, and leaves behind a very rich legacy
[31:09] Speaker 1: that spans the decades. Now we will be featuring additional
[31:15] Speaker 1: programs in her honor. Our Sunday Special, which I had
[31:21] Speaker 1: something else planned for, but we will modify our plans
[31:26] Speaker 1: to bring you an episode that features a fine example
[31:31] Speaker 1: of miss Weber's work and you'll also get to hear
[31:36] Speaker 1: her on the amazing world of radio at Amazing Greatdetectives
[31:41] Speaker 1: dot net. Well, now it's time to thank our Patreon

[32:26] Speaker 9: West to something. And don't you see what that means
[32:29] Speaker 9: he's going to carry out. He's set betil captain names.
[32:32] Speaker 8: He's got to stop him somehow.
[32:35] Speaker 3: You're right about all that stay.
[32:37] Speaker 8: You knew what a terrible Christon he is.
[32:40] Speaker 3: Yet you were engaged to be married to That was.
[32:42] Speaker 8: Before the captain showed him up.
[32:43] Speaker 9: But what he really is a wife of him.
[32:45] Speaker 3: Will you admit yourself, it's never been.
[32:47] Speaker 9: Pinned on because he's probably that's why he boasted that
[32:50] Speaker 9: he could kill my uncle and got away with it.
[32:53] Speaker 7: Now that I've seen here, Johnny, he hasn't made his
[32:58] Speaker 7: presence around here known to anyone else.
[33:00] Speaker 9: I'm sure he doesn't know that I've seen.
[33:02] Speaker 3: But no, just what has he done?
[33:06] Speaker 9: All I know is that I've seen or his shadow
[33:08] Speaker 9: poking around outside in the yard between here.
[33:11] Speaker 2: And the cells and last shows that.
[33:14] Speaker 3: Look, you can see it there, that concrete building, whatever.
[33:21] Speaker 9: It is at it used to be a kind of
[33:23] Speaker 9: jail back in the days of the failing ships. Not
[33:26] Speaker 9: a power company uses it for transformers is.
[33:29] Speaker 3: Whatever you call?
[33:30] Speaker 6: Yeah, I see the power cables leading down to the four.
