[3:15] Speaker 8: I'm glad you feel that way, you stand, You won't
[3:17] Speaker 8: regret it. Yeah, what's the matter? I hope it helps
[3:22] Speaker 8: Read and the other guys find out about it. It's
[3:24] Speaker 8: gonna be rough, and're not gonna find out from us.
[3:27] Speaker 8: We're heading out for East Hollywood.
[3:28] Speaker 7: Joe apartment house out there, Perry says, that's where Red
[3:31] Speaker 7: makes his pickups.
[3:32] Speaker 8: We're about to sad stand I know the address, I
[3:35] Speaker 8: know the neighborhood, though, I'll recognize the place when I
[3:37] Speaker 8: see it.
[3:38] Speaker 6: How you feel now, Stan? Any better? Oh? Lousy sugard.
[3:42] Speaker 6: Here's a fix about now. Sorry, Perry just can't help
[3:45] Speaker 6: you there.
[3:45] Speaker 4: How are you gonna handle this thing, Captain? I mean
[3:47] Speaker 4: picking up Stan and Max Higby? You figure we can
[3:49] Speaker 4: keep it quiet?
[3:50] Speaker 7: Newspapers are going to cooperate. They're not gonna print a
[3:52] Speaker 7: word about it.
[3:53] Speaker 6: I'm gonna handle a court work.
[3:54] Speaker 9: Stan and Max are gonna wave there preliminary Oh, to
[3:57] Speaker 9: give us five to six weeks quiet if we needed.
[4:00] Speaker 6: You can't reach the rest of the gang. But then
[4:01] Speaker 6: we'll never reach them. Sure, feel lousy sick? I never
[4:05] Speaker 6: tried to kick the habit before. How long does it take?
[4:07] Speaker 5: It all depends how bad are you hook?
[4:09] Speaker 6: Oh?
[4:10] Speaker 10: Not bad.
[4:10] Speaker 6: I'm just chippy with it? Not more in a cap
[4:12] Speaker 6: a day? Where are we going out of Stan? Keep
[4:17] Speaker 6: going straight?
[4:17] Speaker 5: Yeah?
[4:18] Speaker 6: Straight ahead? Turn off snuft for a while.
[4:19] Speaker 5: Yet, Well, how do you figure it from here on in? Captain?
[4:23] Speaker 5: What do I do about Red?
[4:25] Speaker 7: You're gonna have to con your way through. I had
[4:27] Speaker 7: the crime lad to fix up a dummy package for you.
[4:29] Speaker 7: I'm a seat thick as the same rappings as the one.
[4:32] Speaker 7: The real stuff came in package Stan gave you in
[4:35] Speaker 7: the restaurant. Take it back to Red and scream your
[4:37] Speaker 7: head off. Yeah, you're telling me you got the package
[4:40] Speaker 7: from Stan and Max and you paid them the six
[4:42] Speaker 7: geese for it. You opened it up and found it
[4:44] Speaker 7: pull of powdered sugar bread them off. Put it on big.
[4:47] Speaker 7: You got a gun?
[4:48] Speaker 5: No, I haven't. I checked it in my locker when
[4:50] Speaker 5: I started on this sort.
[4:51] Speaker 7: Take mine bay, make it heavy. Pretend you're going to
[4:55] Speaker 7: gun him. What if it doesn't work, skipping that's taken
[4:58] Speaker 7: care of too. There'll be a couple of men on
[5:00] Speaker 7: the street, Joe. If you get your back to a wall,
[5:02] Speaker 7: break the window, they'll come running.
[5:03] Speaker 5: Okay, I'll give it a try. You think Red still
[5:06] Speaker 5: his hotel? Stand sure?
[5:08] Speaker 6: It's probably waiting for me and Max.
[5:10] Speaker 5: Anybody with him. You think no?
[5:12] Speaker 4: I don't think so, all right, Bet, I wonder if
[5:15] Speaker 4: you'd call my mother the first chance you gets.
[5:16] Speaker 5: You might be a little worried.
[5:17] Speaker 9: You don't have to. She called the office before we lap. Oh,
[5:20] Speaker 9: I think I convinced her everything was rying.
[5:22] Speaker 7: Oh, thanks a lot, Yeah, that's it. We'll let you
[5:26] Speaker 7: out at the next corner. Head back for the hotel. Right,
[5:29] Speaker 7: good luck, Joe, Thanks, how about it, Perish anything else
[5:36] Speaker 7: you can give us, it might help him.
[5:37] Speaker 6: I don't know. I'm gonna take a lot of fun.
[5:40] Speaker 6: Only one way you can get that.
[5:42] Speaker 5: Yeah, you better get yourself a good fix.
[5:49] Speaker 4: I left Captain kearney ed Jacobs in the Narcotic Suspect
[5:52] Speaker 4: Stan Perish on the corner of Western and Wiltshire and
[5:55] Speaker 4: made my way to Red's hotel on West fifty fourth Street.
[5:58] Speaker 4: I went up to the second floor on found his
[6:00] Speaker 4: door open.
[6:01] Speaker 5: I walked in.
[6:02] Speaker 4: Red was sitting in an overstuffed chair next to the radio,
[6:05] Speaker 4: listening to the police calls coming in.
[6:08] Speaker 6: It's why the gun.
[6:10] Speaker 5: Don't try any your cunning this time. You're two bit
[6:12] Speaker 5: with it, no matter with you.
[6:13] Speaker 6: Put the gun down, No, not.
[6:14] Speaker 5: Before I get what's coming to me? You and your
[6:15] Speaker 5: lousy punks.
[6:16] Speaker 6: What are you talking about? Where's standing Max dead?
[6:18] Speaker 4: I hope that leaves only you to deal with. I
[6:20] Speaker 4: should have known better the first time when you had
[6:21] Speaker 4: me tamp I should have gotten out right.
[6:22] Speaker 5: Then what's your craw?
[6:23] Speaker 6: Guy? Come on, let's settle.
[6:25] Speaker 5: You know what I look for yourself? Six g's worth,
[6:27] Speaker 5: powdered sugar. You didn't think he could beat me for this,
[6:29] Speaker 5: did you?
[6:29] Speaker 6: I don't know what you're talking about.
[6:30] Speaker 4: There's more in this than me. If you don't square
[6:32] Speaker 4: up this thing with us, there's ways of taking care
[6:33] Speaker 4: of you. I'm on the lamb anyway. Now, one more
[6:35] Speaker 4: Beefer is gonna make that.
[6:36] Speaker 6: Much a gun down? Will you? Now, let's talk it out.
[6:38] Speaker 6: It doesn't make sense if you've been beaten so of I.
[6:40] Speaker 5: I will try to sell me that line. Get both
[6:41] Speaker 5: of them out. I know they're here, now, come on,
[6:42] Speaker 5: get them out here.
[6:43] Speaker 6: We watch that gun?
[6:44] Speaker 5: Were you?
[6:45] Speaker 11: I don't know what you're getting at, lindsay they're not here.
[6:47] Speaker 11: Didn't you see him? Max and staining h I saw him.
[6:49] Speaker 4: That's why I'm here. I gave him the money, six
[6:50] Speaker 4: yards of it, and that's what I got, powdered sugar.
[6:52] Speaker 4: And you start explaining, smart guy, it's the truth.
[6:54] Speaker 11: I don't know where they are. I gave Stan and
[6:56] Speaker 11: Max twenty ounces to take to you. I told Stan
[6:58] Speaker 11: and make the meat with you inside. The rest of
[7:00] Speaker 11: max is supposed to be the look at it.
[7:01] Speaker 6: Oh yeah, sure, so help me.
[7:03] Speaker 11: I don't get it. You have never tried anything like
[7:05] Speaker 11: this before. Once you tipped off at all. Maybe the
[7:07] Speaker 11: way they acted something I said.
[7:09] Speaker 4: Oh, nothing, that moot. Stan was a little unhappy. He
[7:11] Speaker 4: said he wanted to fix and you wouldn't give it
[7:12] Speaker 4: on him.
[7:12] Speaker 5: That's right, I wouldn't, well, and you should have known better.
[7:15] Speaker 5: It's no time to get stingy with him when he's
[7:16] Speaker 5: gonna make a deal for you.
[7:17] Speaker 11: You know what happened the last time he took a
[7:18] Speaker 11: fix before a job. I sent him out to that
[7:20] Speaker 11: park to watch you. He ends up by tamping. I'm
[7:23] Speaker 11: leveling with you, Lindsay. I think we've both been taken.
[7:25] Speaker 11: I still don't get it, though, I can't understand why
[7:27] Speaker 11: they'd run out on me.
[7:27] Speaker 5: Now.
[7:28] Speaker 4: Look, I haven't got the time to draw you pictures, mister.
[7:30] Speaker 4: All I know is Mike Do's gone and you haven't
[7:31] Speaker 4: delivered the stuff. Now you get with it.
[7:32] Speaker 6: I'll wait, I'm minute. How do I know for sure?
[7:35] Speaker 5: What?
[7:35] Speaker 6: How do I know?
[7:36] Speaker 11: You didn't get the real merchandise and you took care
[7:38] Speaker 11: of maxims. Stand, how do I know you didn't build
[7:40] Speaker 11: a frame?
[7:40] Speaker 5: Oh?
[7:40] Speaker 4: Sure, that's why I'm back here. I got twenty ounces
[7:42] Speaker 4: free and I want another twenty. I met those mooches
[7:45] Speaker 4: of yours and took care of them all by myself.
[7:46] Speaker 4: Now that makes a lot of sense, doesn't it. Now,
[7:48] Speaker 4: get off at Red. You're not going to pour them
[7:50] Speaker 4: mouth of me out of this. I paid my six
[7:52] Speaker 4: g's and I want the merchandise full, twenty ounces, and
[7:53] Speaker 4: I want.
[7:54] Speaker 5: It right now.
[7:54] Speaker 11: Crazy, I can't do that. You have to give me time.
[7:56] Speaker 11: We don't keep this stuff here. It isn't mine in
[7:58] Speaker 11: the first place.
[7:58] Speaker 5: What are you handed me?
[7:59] Speaker 11: It isn't I'm just a middleman, that's all. You'll have
[8:02] Speaker 11: to give me time. Maybe we can work out something
[8:03] Speaker 11: for you.
[8:04] Speaker 4: You bet you're going to work out something for me.
[8:06] Speaker 4: You've got my six g's. Why'd you try and big
[8:07] Speaker 4: shot me in the first place?
[8:08] Speaker 6: Calm down?
[8:09] Speaker 4: Trying to make me believe you were the big man.
[8:11] Speaker 4: You gotta get wise to yourself. Read why should I
[8:13] Speaker 4: deal with a middleman? I can probably buy the junk
[8:15] Speaker 4: cheaper from your boss. Now, where's heat?
[8:16] Speaker 11: You couldn't buy it a two g's an ounce he
[8:18] Speaker 11: wouldn't sell it to you. I handle all this stuff.
[8:20] Speaker 11: I'm the only one he works through.
[8:21] Speaker 4: What makes you so special? You can't even handle a
[8:23] Speaker 4: twenty houns deal and keep it straight?
[8:24] Speaker 6: Stay cool? Will you give me twenty four hours?
[8:26] Speaker 5: What am I supposed to be doing in the meantime.
[8:28] Speaker 6: Same thing I'll be doing, worrying about getting that stuff back?
[8:30] Speaker 5: Why try and cover up your mooch? Is Red out
[8:32] Speaker 5: on you?
[8:32] Speaker 11: Maybe I want to make sure I'll get the word out. Yeah,
[8:34] Speaker 11: I'll find out what happened before I left Red.
[8:39] Speaker 4: We set up a meet for the following night in
[8:40] Speaker 4: his hotel room at seven pm. Then I left, went
[8:44] Speaker 4: downtown to an all night drug store and put in
[8:46] Speaker 4: calls to Captain Kearney and my partner at Jacobs.
[8:49] Speaker 5: I briefed him on what had.
[8:50] Speaker 4: Happened with Red, and the Captain set it up for
[8:52] Speaker 4: the three of us to meet early that morning and
[8:54] Speaker 4: plan the next move.
[8:55] Speaker 5: The meeting point was down off Gallardo Street, alongside the
[8:58] Speaker 5: Santa Fe train yards.
[9:02] Speaker 6: Y'all over here, Hi ed Cap. Hi.
[9:08] Speaker 5: A little late.
[9:09] Speaker 6: Anything happened, but I did some doubling back.
[9:11] Speaker 5: I wanted to make sure.
[9:12] Speaker 6: I wasn't followed things worked out with Red high not trouble?
[9:14] Speaker 5: Why not so far?
[9:15] Speaker 6: No?
[9:16] Speaker 5: I think he went for my story.
[9:17] Speaker 4: He said he's going to do some checking around though,
[9:19] Speaker 4: try to find out what happened to standon Max.
[9:21] Speaker 9: Yeah, halfway figured then that story you told him. I
[9:24] Speaker 9: thought if Red bought that, you'd be in.
[9:26] Speaker 5: We didn't buy it that far. I guess it made
[9:29] Speaker 5: an impression. Waving again. Nobody still has some doubts.
[9:32] Speaker 6: What else can you do to get yourself in solid?
[9:34] Speaker 6: You tried about it everything, Joe. I've been kicking around
[9:37] Speaker 6: an idea. It might work for you. I don't know.
[9:40] Speaker 7: Put on a phony shakedown for him might give you
[9:43] Speaker 7: a chance to show him how tough you're supposed to be.
[9:45] Speaker 6: What do you think?
[9:47] Speaker 5: Well, maybe I ought to help out. If we stage
[9:50] Speaker 5: it right.
[9:50] Speaker 6: When's your next meet with Red?
[9:52] Speaker 5: Seven o'clock tonight his hotel, room.
[9:54] Speaker 6: Two thirty one, then be honest or right?
[9:56] Speaker 5: How do you want to work it?
[9:58] Speaker 7: Oh, I'll get a couple of men from metro Vision,
[10:00] Speaker 7: have him in uniform. We better have him work in
[10:02] Speaker 7: a radio car. We're gonna have to have a good
[10:05] Speaker 7: reason for him breaking in on you. How about a
[10:07] Speaker 7: four or fifteen. Skipper Joe could go up to the room,
[10:09] Speaker 7: pick an argument with the Red and make noise a lot,
[10:11] Speaker 7: a lot talking.
[10:12] Speaker 5: Yeah, that sounds okay.
[10:13] Speaker 7: All right, both of the men in the radio car'll
[10:16] Speaker 7: be thoroughly briefed. You'll know what to do Friday. You
[10:19] Speaker 7: out to sell yourself. Act as tough as you think
[10:21] Speaker 7: you have to. All right, don't give it a try,
[10:23] Speaker 7: play it after the hilt. You give Red the least
[10:25] Speaker 7: idea of the shakedowns a phony, and we're washed up.
[10:28] Speaker 7: No phone, meet the off as soon as you can
[10:30] Speaker 7: the inside line. We'll be waiting for the call.
[10:32] Speaker 4: Right, It's just one more thing. Yeah, how about that
[10:36] Speaker 4: apartment house. Dan was gonna show you last night, the
[10:38] Speaker 4: place where Red's supposed to pick up the junk.
[10:40] Speaker 6: He pointed the place out. All right, it's gonna take
[10:42] Speaker 6: some checking.
[10:43] Speaker 5: What do you mean?
[10:43] Speaker 9: Stan said? He drove read to this apartment house about
[10:45] Speaker 9: a dozen times. I always had to stay in the car.
[10:48] Speaker 9: They were Red one in alone. Didn't know which apartment
[10:50] Speaker 9: Red went to.
[10:51] Speaker 5: Can't we check him out him?
[10:52] Speaker 6: We got some men on it.
[10:53] Speaker 5: Now.
[10:53] Speaker 7: I'm gonna take a little time. Big layout, all right,
[10:56] Speaker 7: forty seven apartments, I.
[11:01] Speaker 4: Left dead and Captain Kearney and caught a street car
[11:03] Speaker 4: back to my hotel. I had some scrambled eggs, toasting
[11:06] Speaker 4: coffee and the grill next door, and then I went
[11:08] Speaker 4: up to my room and got.
[11:09] Speaker 5: A couple hours sleep.
[11:10] Speaker 4: Late that afternoon, I took in the show at a
[11:12] Speaker 4: newsreel theater, had a bite eat, and then headed out
[11:15] Speaker 4: for Red's hotel on West fifty fourth Street. I got
[11:18] Speaker 4: there a few minutes before seven. Red was waiting, apparently
[11:22] Speaker 4: failed to dig up any information on what had happened
[11:24] Speaker 4: to his two operators standing max. I accused him again
[11:27] Speaker 4: of trying to swindle me out of six thousand dollars.
[11:30] Speaker 4: I demanded the twenty ounces of heroin. Red had nothing to.
[11:33] Speaker 5: Offer, but apologies.
[11:36] Speaker 6: All right, all right, relax, Will you take it easy.
[11:38] Speaker 6: I'll work out something.
[11:39] Speaker 5: Take it easy. Nothing you do enough of that for
[11:41] Speaker 5: the both of us. You sit there and listen to
[11:42] Speaker 5: that radio.
[11:42] Speaker 4: Why don't you ge out and hustle up those two
[11:44] Speaker 4: mooches of yours and get my dough ball?
[11:45] Speaker 5: All right?
[11:45] Speaker 6: All right, you don't have the scream. I said, I'd
[11:47] Speaker 6: work something out.
[11:48] Speaker 5: All right, then start working. Get it the dough or
[11:50] Speaker 5: the white stuff. I gotta have it at the end
[11:51] Speaker 5: of the week.
[11:51] Speaker 6: What do you want to do? Have it all over
[11:52] Speaker 6: the hotel? Keep it down?
[11:54] Speaker 5: Why you take me for six g's and I'm supposed
[11:56] Speaker 5: to play it nice. Now, come off it, mister.
[11:58] Speaker 6: I didn't take it for six cheese.
[12:00] Speaker 5: Those two mules did, and you own them. Either you
[12:01] Speaker 5: square this.
[12:02] Speaker 4: Up or everybody in the business is going to know
[12:03] Speaker 4: about this.
[12:04] Speaker 6: It's got into you anyway. You've been boozing it up today.
[12:06] Speaker 5: Don't you worry about me. I'll take care of my end.
[12:09] Speaker 4: Real big operator, huh right, you had all the h
[12:12] Speaker 4: you handled everything.
[12:13] Speaker 5: A real big shot out.
[12:15] Speaker 6: I forget it.
[12:15] Speaker 5: Read the big wheel. He handles all kinds of deals
[12:18] Speaker 5: fifty cents to five dollars. After that, they get.
[12:20] Speaker 6: Too big for it. I said, forget it, Lindsay.
[12:22] Speaker 4: When this one gets around, they're gonna laugh you right
[12:24] Speaker 4: out of the business. You can go back to selling
[12:26] Speaker 4: razor blades and knock that radio off. I'm sick of
[12:28] Speaker 4: hearing that.
[12:31] Speaker 6: You got quiet down.
[12:32] Speaker 5: Do you think you're ready to handle it?
[12:33] Speaker 6: Do you?
[12:33] Speaker 11: I told you I'd try and work out something for you,
[12:35] Speaker 11: and I'm playing tough. It's gonna get your nothing.
[12:36] Speaker 6: You want to know that? What's it?
[12:39] Speaker 5: What's it sound like? Yeah? Who is it? Police officer
[12:42] Speaker 5: is helping up? What is this?
[12:44] Speaker 6: What do you got me?
[12:45] Speaker 2: What do you take it?
[12:46] Speaker 12: Easy?
[12:46] Speaker 6: You can't take guess right?
[12:49] Speaker 13: All right?
[12:49] Speaker 12: Up and up?
[12:50] Speaker 5: But I'm getting out of here. I'm not going to
[12:51] Speaker 5: any shake down your mind?
[12:52] Speaker 6: Hold it. I didn't mean you keep you waiting?
[12:57] Speaker 5: Come on in.
[12:58] Speaker 6: That's all the noise about up here. Nothing just saying
[13:01] Speaker 6: a friendly argument. That's it, that's your identification. Sure you'll
[13:05] Speaker 6: stay put? Yeah, Harry, better shake him down? Yeah right?
[13:12] Speaker 6: All right? Back against the wall. Come on, hands behind
[13:15] Speaker 6: your head, keep him here.
[13:19] Speaker 1: Today?
[13:19] Speaker 5: Grab the other one? All right? Good, both of them?
[13:25] Speaker 6: You crazy fool? Now what do we do?
[13:27] Speaker 4: I don't have to worry about the other one. He's
[13:28] Speaker 4: out cold. Take the gun off this one here, I'll
[13:30] Speaker 4: get his handcuffs.
[13:32] Speaker 5: Good.
[13:33] Speaker 6: Why'd you have to do it? Why did you have
[13:34] Speaker 6: to start something?
[13:35] Speaker 5: I can't afford a shakedown? You want to know that?
[13:37] Speaker 6: Better give it up both here. You're not going and
[13:39] Speaker 6: get away with it?
[13:40] Speaker 5: And shut up.
[13:40] Speaker 6: You won't go far.
[13:44] Speaker 4: Come on right, help me drag him over here. What
[13:46] Speaker 4: are you gonna do a bedpost here, like, get his
[13:48] Speaker 4: wrists around here.
[13:49] Speaker 6: That's it.
[13:53] Speaker 5: I don't know.
[13:54] Speaker 6: Hold him ends here out of your mind? What do
[13:56] Speaker 6: we do with him now?
[13:57] Speaker 5: I'll worry about that. How's his partner doing? He's still
[14:00] Speaker 5: out all right? Now? Cop, let's have it. What's the
[14:03] Speaker 5: idea of the shakedown?
[14:05] Speaker 6: Well we pick you up again, you'll get the idea.
[14:08] Speaker 5: Come on, let's have it.
[14:09] Speaker 6: Why don't you lay off? It's not going to get
[14:10] Speaker 6: us out of this for.
[14:11] Speaker 5: A big dealer. You got a lot of chicken in
[14:13] Speaker 5: you now, look cop, give why they shake down?
[14:16] Speaker 6: You're wasting your time.
[14:18] Speaker 5: Maybe I can change your.
[14:19] Speaker 6: Mind, lindsay you're crazy. Put that gun away?
[14:21] Speaker 5: Now, come on, cop, talk who gave you the tip?
[14:23] Speaker 5: Gun away?
[14:24] Speaker 6: It's only going to get us in deeper.
[14:25] Speaker 4: I want some answers. These buzz didn't come along by accident.
[14:27] Speaker 4: There had to be a tip off.
[14:28] Speaker 6: How do you know?
[14:29] Speaker 11: You were talking up a storm in here, making a
[14:30] Speaker 11: lot of noise. Somebody in the hotel could have complained.
[14:33] Speaker 11: Come on, come on, get.
[14:33] Speaker 5: Out of here and leave the two of them behind
[14:35] Speaker 5: to identify us. That ain't gonna work.
[14:36] Speaker 6: It's got to what else can we do? We can
[14:38] Speaker 6: kill him out of your mind.
[14:40] Speaker 5: I can kill him right now. The probably wouldn't find
[14:42] Speaker 5: him in the morning.
[14:42] Speaker 6: Or you'll do it alone. Lindsay, I'm getting out.
[14:44] Speaker 5: We still got business to do.
[14:45] Speaker 11: I'm not looking for a murder right now. Come on,
[14:47] Speaker 11: get it up, Let's get out of here.
[14:48] Speaker 4: As soon as we leave, we're gonna have to start running.
[14:50] Speaker 4: I won't be good for more in a day.
[14:51] Speaker 5: In this time. What I would do about my deal?
[14:53] Speaker 6: Come on, we can talk about it later.
[14:54] Speaker 4: Come on, we can talk right now. You handed me
[14:56] Speaker 4: the stall long enough, I got twenty four hours left.
[14:58] Speaker 4: I want it settled.
[14:58] Speaker 6: Okay, okay, I'll talk to the big man.
[15:00] Speaker 5: I promise you. I want to have a meet with him.
[15:03] Speaker 5: I don't know you listen at six.
[15:04] Speaker 4: Grand By was a dropping the bucket. I want to
[15:06] Speaker 4: buy more. If the big guy's ready, saw.
[15:08] Speaker 6: Am you got the money?
[15:09] Speaker 5: I got it cash? How about the meat? How about it? Red?
[15:14] Speaker 6: K okay, okay, I'll set it up.
[15:20] Speaker 4: Red got his things together and we took the rear
[15:22] Speaker 4: fire escape that led down to a service alley behind
[15:25] Speaker 4: the hotel. Before the two of us separated, we agreed
[15:28] Speaker 4: that Red would call me at my hotel at ten
[15:30] Speaker 4: o'clock the following morning. I wasn't altogether sure, but it
[15:34] Speaker 4: seemed as though the act I'd put on at the
[15:35] Speaker 4: phony shakedown it impressed Red quite a bit. Before I
[15:39] Speaker 4: went back to my hotel, I called Ed Jacobs and
[15:42] Speaker 4: Captain Kearney and briefed them on the developments. At ten
[15:45] Speaker 4: o'clock the next morning, I was waiting for the phone
[15:47] Speaker 4: in my hotel room.
[15:48] Speaker 5: At ten point fifteen, Red call, I.
[15:50] Speaker 6: Talk to the big Man this morning.
[15:52] Speaker 10: I told him what you wanted.
[15:53] Speaker 5: Yeah, what's the answer.
[15:54] Speaker 2: You got to be a fastye Oka car.
[15:56] Speaker 5: Well, I'm ready, is he?
[15:57] Speaker 6: I think?
[15:58] Speaker 5: So? Talk all right? What about the meat? I'll take
[16:02] Speaker 5: it to it when.
[16:15] Speaker 3: You are listening to Dragnet authentic stories of your police
[16:19] Speaker 3: force in action.
[16:28] Speaker 4: Tuesday August sixteenth, ten thirty three am. As soon as
[16:32] Speaker 4: I got word from Red about the meat he'd set
[16:34] Speaker 4: up for me with a big man, I called Captain
[16:36] Speaker 4: Kearney on the inside line and briefed him on the
[16:38] Speaker 4: way things stood. He said he'd have three teams of
[16:41] Speaker 4: men ready to tail me and cover the meat. They'd
[16:44] Speaker 4: work alternately in three way radio cars in order to
[16:47] Speaker 4: reduce the risk of discovery. To the minimum. He also
[16:50] Speaker 4: told me the check of tenants was continuing at the
[16:53] Speaker 4: East Hollywood apartment house where Red apparently was picking up
[16:55] Speaker 4: his supply of heroin for distribution. So far, the detail
[16:59] Speaker 4: of man assigned to the job had failed to uncover
[17:02] Speaker 4: any definite leads.
[17:03] Speaker 5: At eight minutes.
[17:04] Speaker 4: Past eight o'clock that night, Red picked me up at
[17:06] Speaker 4: my hotel and together we drove out along Alhambra Avenue.
[17:10] Speaker 4: We parked alongside the edge of a private golf course
[17:13] Speaker 4: just north of the Ocean Highway.
[17:19] Speaker 6: Smoke, Okay, thanks, gotta mention it.
[17:24] Speaker 5: Yeah nice, Well what about it? We've been here fifteen
[17:35] Speaker 5: minutes already, a lot.
[17:36] Speaker 6: Of sign feels like a sybost doesn't like to hurry things.
[17:40] Speaker 4: Yeah, well, maybe he ought to get with it relaxed.
[17:48] Speaker 4: So we waited nine thirty, ten o'clock, ten thirty eleven,
[17:54] Speaker 4: still no sign of the big man. Eleven thirty eleven,
[17:58] Speaker 4: forty five, no sign? What time he got, lindsay, ten
[18:05] Speaker 4: minutes to midnight? And you got any ideas?
[18:09] Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess I can tell you now.
[18:11] Speaker 5: Well, you make this one real good with you. It's
[18:13] Speaker 5: been a long wait.
[18:14] Speaker 6: Boss wants to make sure about you. That's all. He's
[18:16] Speaker 6: checking his context. Where you said you operate up around Fresno?
[18:19] Speaker 6: Isn't that right?
[18:20] Speaker 5: All right? So he's checking on me. What's he want
[18:21] Speaker 5: of a blood sample?
[18:22] Speaker 6: He's careful. He wants to make sure it didn't show.
[18:25] Speaker 6: This is what he told me to tell you.
[18:26] Speaker 5: Yeah, if you're cleared all.
[18:28] Speaker 6: Around with his contacts and meets set for tomorrow afternoon
[18:30] Speaker 6: where I'll get to it. That deal to this. You
[18:34] Speaker 6: said you wanted a big buy. The boss has got it.
[18:36] Speaker 5: How much?
[18:36] Speaker 6: Two kilos, same good stuff you sampled, high grade Mexican.
[18:40] Speaker 6: You can get it at ten grand akilo.
[18:42] Speaker 5: Well, it's not bad if it's good quality. What's the breakdown?
[18:44] Speaker 6: It's forty percent. You're getting a fat discount, you know that.
[18:47] Speaker 4: Well, that depends two kilos ten GI's apiece, twenty thousand bucks.
[18:51] Speaker 6: You've got education carry.
[18:53] Speaker 4: It's a lot of scratch to get together in a hurry.
[18:55] Speaker 4: You got a whole day, No, don't no jump, All right,
[18:58] Speaker 4: I'll get it. Where's the meat up by South Pasadena.
[19:01] Speaker 4: They're holding a big flower show in the neighborhood. You'll
[19:03] Speaker 4: meet him there. Contact me for the time.
[19:07] Speaker 5: When will it be? When do I meet him?
[19:08] Speaker 6: When you got the twenty thousand.
[19:13] Speaker 4: Eleven fifteen PM, Red drove me back downtown and dropped
[19:16] Speaker 4: me off at Fourth and Maine. Before we separated, he
[19:19] Speaker 4: told me he'd call me early the following afternoon regarding
[19:22] Speaker 4: the time of the meet with a Big Man, providing
[19:25] Speaker 4: I had the twenty thousand dollars for the narcotics buy.
[19:29] Speaker 4: One am, after stopping off at a cafeteria and then
[19:32] Speaker 4: a coffee counter to make sure I wasn't being tailed,
[19:34] Speaker 4: I got to a public telephone.
[19:35] Speaker 5: Put in a call to Captain Kearney South.
[19:37] Speaker 7: Pasadena Flowers Show sometime tomorrow afternoon there.
[19:40] Speaker 5: Right, Yeah, that's it, Ken, all right, we'll cover it
[19:42] Speaker 5: all the way. Well, how about the money? What do
[19:45] Speaker 5: you think he got a little with you, haven't you? Well? Little? Yeah?
[19:47] Speaker 7: Okay, fake it the best way, you know how.
[19:50] Speaker 2: We'll be a right.
[19:51] Speaker 6: So as you make sure the guy has the junk with.
[19:52] Speaker 5: Him past the signal, we'll move in right.
[19:55] Speaker 7: Something else, You get any lead at all on the
[19:57] Speaker 7: big man tonight?
[19:58] Speaker 5: No? Nothing? How about you a piece of luck?
[20:00] Speaker 7: I think we got him spotted.
[20:05] Speaker 4: Before he hung up, Captain Kearney told me that the
[20:08] Speaker 4: careful screening of tenants in the East Hollywood apartment house
[20:11] Speaker 4: pointed out to them by Stan had netted a couple
[20:13] Speaker 4: of prime suspects. They were an elderly couple, a mister
[20:16] Speaker 4: and missus Thomas Leslie. Besides the fact that he had
[20:20] Speaker 4: a narcotics record in the East, mister Leslie operated a
[20:22] Speaker 4: second hand bookstore on Beverly Boulevard, which apparently was being
[20:25] Speaker 4: visited often by known narcotics peddlers. Early the following afternoon,
[20:30] Speaker 4: Red called me at my hotel room and I told
[20:32] Speaker 4: him I had the twenty thousand dollars for the buye.
[20:35] Speaker 5: He picked me up at one forty five pm.
[20:38] Speaker 4: I flashed a stack of money, containing mostly one dollar bills,
[20:41] Speaker 4: and he seemed satisfied. He drove me out to the
[20:44] Speaker 4: site of the flower show in South Pasadena, a large
[20:47] Speaker 4: glass domed conservatory just off the Royosco Freeway.
[20:53] Speaker 10: I said, say, yeah, sure, nice flies.
[21:03] Speaker 6: Huh, it's beautiful.
[21:06] Speaker 4: How many times we're gonna have to cover this route?
[21:08] Speaker 4: I've seen everything twice already.
[21:10] Speaker 6: Won be long a couple of minutes, Oh this way,
[21:12] Speaker 6: come on? Yeah, the ship grat.
[21:23] Speaker 4: Look, I don't get any of this. If we got business,
[21:25] Speaker 4: why can't it be in private. This is your big
[21:27] Speaker 4: man's idea of a joke.
[21:29] Speaker 6: It's protection. Lindsay, he's got to be careful. I guess
[21:31] Speaker 6: you figure this is the last place they look for.
[21:35] Speaker 4: We'll make another round of this place. We'll stand out
[21:37] Speaker 4: like a sore thumb.
[21:38] Speaker 6: I'll relax. You'll make you buy. Coming up right now, right,
[21:41] Speaker 6: come on following me, Tom, What do you say?
[21:53] Speaker 12: Oh, oh you're in.
[21:55] Speaker 14: What do you think of my glady old antrees? Those
[21:57] Speaker 14: up there? When you say the beauties?
[22:00] Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, that real great time.
[22:02] Speaker 14: Took me three and a half years to get blooms
[22:04] Speaker 14: like that South African species, you know, the Chilsea type.
[22:07] Speaker 14: Raised them bright in the little greenhouse back of that place,
[22:10] Speaker 14: right you see the scarlets and the whites. That was
[22:13] Speaker 14: the mine.
[22:14] Speaker 6: Yeah, ah, Tom, like you have you meet that friend
[22:17] Speaker 6: of mine? Lindsay, it's just Tom.
[22:20] Speaker 12: How do you do? What do you think of my entries?
[22:22] Speaker 12: Raised every one of them from seeds? Lindsay.
[22:25] Speaker 14: They take a lot of care. Yeah, they're all right,
[22:29] Speaker 14: plenty of care, especially those the South African type. They
[22:33] Speaker 14: take a good stiff sandy loam, quality fertilizer, just the
[22:36] Speaker 14: right kind of heat and water, takes a lot of work.
[22:39] Speaker 5: Problem. Yeah, the guy haven't got too much time to spend.
[22:44] Speaker 5: Maybe we better talk outside.
[22:45] Speaker 14: Yes, it takes quite a lot of work. Beautiful blooms.
[22:49] Speaker 14: You have all the money within all of it.
[22:51] Speaker 5: We got two kilos.
[22:52] Speaker 12: That's correct. You can go out the sideway.
[22:55] Speaker 14: They read you followed behind and keep an eye open
[22:58] Speaker 14: right this way. Sorry for the delay, it's necessary sometimes. Yeah,
[23:09] Speaker 14: you came out and read your double checked you weren't followed.
[23:12] Speaker 5: I double checked. I've been doing business longer and red.
[23:15] Speaker 6: Mm.
[23:16] Speaker 12: Maybe we can make it a permanent tie.
[23:19] Speaker 6: Not here.
[23:25] Speaker 12: My cars this way?
[23:28] Speaker 5: You always make deals in the open public places.
[23:31] Speaker 14: Always it hazards advantages you sure this.
[23:34] Speaker 5: Is the hi sampled now? I don't want another phony buy.
[23:37] Speaker 14: It's no Maybe can be sure. Then here's a car.
[23:43] Speaker 14: Well the money?
[23:45] Speaker 5: Will you show me the stuff? Red nose? I got
[23:47] Speaker 5: the money you read?
[23:51] Speaker 14: Yeah, Tim, the money you saw it before you brought
[23:54] Speaker 14: him here. Yeah, showed it to me right here in
[23:57] Speaker 14: my pocket. Have a look if you want. Now, come on,
[24:01] Speaker 14: I can't afford to camp on this thing. All right,
[24:04] Speaker 14: people look out Red all right in the car wend
[24:16] Speaker 14: there under the deskboard. Here I always find. That's the
[24:20] Speaker 14: best place.
[24:23] Speaker 12: You have a car.
[24:23] Speaker 5: Of course, I go back with Red.
[24:26] Speaker 12: All right, they are two kilos, not the money.
[24:31] Speaker 5: What about breaking the package? Oh, I know it's not
[24:33] Speaker 5: more powdered sugar.
[24:34] Speaker 12: Of course it's not. Wait a minute, what is this
[24:37] Speaker 12: those men coming up.
[24:38] Speaker 6: To the car.
[24:39] Speaker 5: Takety is he missing?
[24:40] Speaker 12: I'm getting out of here?
[24:43] Speaker 6: In here, all right, Joe, I got him, pull him in.
[24:47] Speaker 5: I'll shake him down.
[24:49] Speaker 6: We got the other one, Red, no trouble.
[24:51] Speaker 5: Good, Okay, he's called Red.
[24:54] Speaker 12: It's stupid Red. I should have known. I should have know.
[24:56] Speaker 6: Joe, good work stuff all day.
[24:58] Speaker 5: Yeah, two kilos.
[25:00] Speaker 6: Want us to take him back in our car, skipper?
[25:02] Speaker 6: All right, I'll take in the other one. Meet you
[25:04] Speaker 6: at the parking lot gate. We'll folly in.
[25:06] Speaker 5: All right, all right, mister, that's why.
[25:08] Speaker 14: Look, if you ask you a favor, I won't take
[25:10] Speaker 14: a minute. Yeah, let me call my wife. I want
[25:14] Speaker 14: to let her know what's happened. I wanted to come
[25:16] Speaker 14: out here and get my flowers. I got some valuable
[25:19] Speaker 14: plants in that show.
[25:20] Speaker 6: I'll be taken care of. Your wife couldn't make it anyway.
[25:23] Speaker 6: She was picked up an hour ago.
[25:24] Speaker 14: Oh, couldn't be. What's gonna happen? Every dollar I own,
[25:29] Speaker 14: all my merchandise, took care of the best quality, all
[25:33] Speaker 14: of it.
[25:33] Speaker 5: We'll take care of that. Come on, let's go.
[25:35] Speaker 12: Well, I got those beautiful plants. You can do that
[25:39] Speaker 12: much for me.
[25:40] Speaker 14: Let me go back and get my flowers their prize, Glady, ALUs,
[25:44] Speaker 14: It won't hurt anything.
[25:47] Speaker 12: Just let me take some with me. Just a feudil
[25:49] Speaker 12: I get back?
[25:50] Speaker 5: Why I bother? They won't last that lot.
[26:00] Speaker 2: The story you have just heard was true. The names
[26:04] Speaker 2: were changed to protect the innocent.
[26:06] Speaker 3: On December fourth, trial was held in Superior Court, Department
[26:09] Speaker 3: eighty four, City and County of Los Angeles, State of California.
[26:12] Speaker 3: In a moment the results of that trial, Thomas Leslie
[26:23] Speaker 3: and William red Forrester were filed on in the District
[26:26] Speaker 3: Attorney's office for violation of the State Health and Safety
[26:29] Speaker 3: Code Section eleven thousand, five hundred. Both men were tried
[26:33] Speaker 3: in Superior Court and found guilty of the charge. The
[26:36] Speaker 3: violation carries a penalty of imprisonment in the state penitentiary
[26:40] Speaker 3: for not less than five nor more than ten years.
[26:44] Speaker 3: Because of their co operation in the investigation and apprehension
[26:47] Speaker 3: of the narcotics gang ring leaders Stan Parrish and Max
[26:51] Speaker 3: Higby were given one year sentences in the County jail
[26:54] Speaker 3: with five years probation. You have just heard Dragnett, a
[27:07] Speaker 3: series of authentic cases from official files. Technical advice comes
[27:11] Speaker 3: from the Office of Chief of Police wh Parker, Los
[27:13] Speaker 3: Angeles Police Department. Heard Tonight where Barney Phillips and Stacy Harris.
[27:18] Speaker 3: Script by Jim Mosey, music by Walter Schumann, Hal Givney speaking.
[27:32] Speaker 4: Next, It's David Harding and Counterspy on NBC.
[27:42] Speaker 1: Welcome Back, Okay, a great conclusion to this episode. I
[27:47] Speaker 1: really found this fascinating. And even though Friday's a policeman,
[27:54] Speaker 1: his play is as daring as the most out rageous
[28:00] Speaker 1: con scheme. And he did thoroughly Conrad. That's why Red
[28:07] Speaker 1: didn't dig deep into the money. He was sold on
[28:11] Speaker 1: Friday being this big time drug operator. And of course
[28:15] Speaker 1: the takedown at the apartment was just icing on the cake.
[28:21] Speaker 5: Oh.
[28:22] Speaker 1: I will say, I do feel bad for those guys
[28:24] Speaker 1: for Metro Division because it sounds like they got worked
[28:28] Speaker 1: over because Red checked one of them and confirmed that
[28:32] Speaker 1: they weren't conscious. So I hope for Friday's case, give
[28:37] Speaker 1: them a concussion was within the realm of showing yourself
[28:42] Speaker 1: as tough as you needed to. I would be horrible
[28:46] Speaker 1: at an assignment like that, and I would get really
[28:49] Speaker 1: nervous when he suggested killing us. I'd be like, does
[28:52] Speaker 1: he need to show himself that tough? But again, I
[28:55] Speaker 1: think Friday had a sense of who Red was and
[28:59] Speaker 1: how we approached things, and his general caution, and that
[29:04] Speaker 1: the last thing in the world Red was going to
[29:06] Speaker 1: want would be for him to kill two police officers
[29:11] Speaker 1: in his hotel room, because if reded called his bluff,
[29:16] Speaker 1: that would have been problematic. And I love the Flower
[29:20] Speaker 1: Show as the setting for the drug boss. Ye not
[29:24] Speaker 1: something you'd expect, but really does work well. And it
[29:27] Speaker 1: also adds some depth to the mister Big of the
[29:31] Speaker 1: story and a sign that at least in the early
[29:34] Speaker 1: nineteen fifties, drug dealers were not always who you'd expect now.
[29:39] Speaker 1: The earlier dialogue with the suspect that they captured and
[29:44] Speaker 1: who was cooperating is somewhat noteworthy, and I looked it
[29:49] Speaker 1: up when they were suggesting that he quit and he
[29:52] Speaker 1: asked how long he was asked, how bad are you hooked?
[29:57] Speaker 1: And he said, oh, not bad. I'm just chippy with it,
[30:01] Speaker 1: not more than a cappa day, which is a good
[30:04] Speaker 1: piece of writing because drug users often distinguish themselves from
[30:10] Speaker 1: occasional users who were called chippy or chippers and junkies.
[30:19] Speaker 1: But as the dialogue says, it's also kind of the
[30:22] Speaker 1: nature of addiction to minimize the problem. He wasn't hooked
[30:27] Speaker 1: that bad, and he used no more than a cap
[30:32] Speaker 1: of day. That's actually a pretty substantial amount for daily consumption.
[30:37] Speaker 1: And keep in mind that we've established through this episode
[30:41] Speaker 1: that this is Heroin with purity of more than forty percent,
[30:46] Speaker 1: which was a fairly high grade of junk for that era. Well,
[30:52] Speaker 1: now we turn to listener comments and we start on Spotify.
[30:57] Speaker 1: Some comments regarding the Big Sorrow, Peter Rights Adam. When
[31:00] Speaker 1: you mentioned last week that it was the last episode
[31:03] Speaker 1: featuring Barton Yarborough, I assumed that he left to pursue
[31:06] Speaker 1: another role on another program. When I learned today that
[31:09] Speaker 1: he had died of a heart attack, I was genuinely shocked,
[31:12] Speaker 1: so much so that I had to listen to the
[31:14] Speaker 1: episode twice to make sure that I heard it right.
[31:17] Speaker 1: I will miss hearing his voice. Can you recommend other
[31:20] Speaker 1: programs that he appeared in that I can listen to well,
[31:24] Speaker 1: I can talk about what he worked in, but listening
[31:29] Speaker 1: can be a bit of a challenge. Barton Yarborough's most
[31:33] Speaker 1: famous radio role among his contemporaries was as Clifford Barber
[31:40] Speaker 1: on the soap opera One Man's Family. He began playing
[31:44] Speaker 1: the role in nineteen thirty two and carried on to
[31:49] Speaker 1: his death. Like many soap operas, there are a lot
[31:55] Speaker 1: of missing episodes, more than it's actually around ninety percent
[32:00] Speaker 1: of One Man's Family is missing, and of course the
[32:03] Speaker 1: nature of soap operas and the fact that you have
[32:06] Speaker 1: this big family and only fifteen minutes a day and
[32:12] Speaker 1: is a situation where you will have characters on and
[32:15] Speaker 1: off the program. Now, there is a fairly substantial storyline
[32:21] Speaker 1: where he takes a major role starting in January of
[32:27] Speaker 1: nineteen fifty one, with most of that month's episodes in circulation,
[32:33] Speaker 1: though no promise that you get to the end of
[32:35] Speaker 1: the storyline. Yarborough also I Love a Mystery, in which
[32:42] Speaker 1: he played the role of Doc Long as one of
[32:46] Speaker 1: three intrepid mystery solving adventurers. This actually led to three
[32:53] Speaker 1: different spinoff movies in which Yarborough appeared on screen. Sadly,
[32:59] Speaker 1: the only complete I Love a Mystery serials are from
[33:04] Speaker 1: a nineteen forty nine revival of the series. However, you
[33:09] Speaker 1: can hear Bart and Yarborough playing doc in the sequel
[33:14] Speaker 1: series to the original I Loved Mystery, I Love Adventure.
[33:18] Speaker 1: He's also in Adventures by Morse again, another Carlton Moose series.
[33:24] Speaker 1: He also starred in the short lived and sadly well
[33:30] Speaker 1: circulated Western Hawk Larrabee, and he played a supporting role
[33:35] Speaker 1: in the Elliott Lewis series Hawk Durango, another Western. In
[33:41] Speaker 1: addition to that, Barbara did a pilot for a series
[33:49] Speaker 1: with Jack Webb and Elliott Lewis called Three for Adventure.
[33:54] Speaker 1: As I think about that series, and I don't think
[33:56] Speaker 1: I said it at the time, I played that as
[34:00] Speaker 1: part of our Jack Webb centennial celebration back in twenty twenty,
[34:06] Speaker 1: that pilot was really an attempt to kind of rip
[34:10] Speaker 1: off the Morse Adventure format. I think I might have
[34:17] Speaker 1: an Easter break coming up and I might go ahead
[34:20] Speaker 1: and play that episode on The Great Adventurers for our encore.
[34:25] Speaker 1: Then beyond that, though Yarborough was a very active character actor.
[34:31] Speaker 1: He was in a lot of different productions. He was
[34:37] Speaker 1: on Escape often, he did quite a few episodes of
[34:41] Speaker 1: Screen Director's Playhouse, and he would be in everything from
[34:47] Speaker 1: sitcoms to anthology shows, to Other Place and detective programs.
[34:55] Speaker 1: Even though this is the last of Ben Romero, we'll
[34:59] Speaker 1: run into him in quite a few other guyses. As
[35:05] Speaker 1: our full time radio listening continues, Doctor Who Done It? Riots,
[35:09] Speaker 1: I can't help but feel Jack's Webb's speech at the
[35:11] Speaker 1: closing was cut short by the music. It would be
[35:14] Speaker 1: a tough one to get through.
[35:15] Speaker 13: Well.
[35:16] Speaker 1: In that case, that all up to That is our
[35:19] Speaker 1: editing there. Want to include some of the remarks about
[35:26] Speaker 1: the season without also throwing in the fatima ad, which
[35:31] Speaker 1: is particularly important now that the podcast is actually broadcast
[35:40] Speaker 1: over the air every now and again over on Patreon.
[35:43] Speaker 1: Emma's Riots. This was an extraordinary episode, unlike any other
[35:48] Speaker 1: in either radio or television that I remember. Clearly, Jack
[35:51] Speaker 1: Webb was devastated by Yarborough's death. They were professional and
[35:56] Speaker 1: personal friends, and I'm sure Web couldn't imagine anyone taking
[35:59] Speaker 1: the roll on because yard Borough was there. From the beginning,
[36:03] Speaker 1: The episode winds up to be fairly Bland as if
[36:07] Speaker 1: to emphasize the sarity of the first ten minutes. Well,
[36:12] Speaker 1: I definitely agree that Webb was devastated and there really
[36:17] Speaker 1: was no contingency plan. And web was not someone who
[36:24] Speaker 1: was close with a lot of people, but those that
[36:27] Speaker 1: he was close with it was genuine, and I think
[36:34] Speaker 1: it definitely was a blow because this is how the
[36:38] Speaker 1: series had been built, and what to do next was
[36:43] Speaker 1: a big question. I think that the smartest thing they
[36:46] Speaker 1: did is really something that a lot of productions would
[36:51] Speaker 1: be nervous with. I gave himself time. This period of
[36:57] Speaker 1: temporary partners would continue for a very long time, relatively
[37:05] Speaker 1: and essentially for the entire rest of the first season
[37:09] Speaker 1: on television after the two episodes which had been filmed,
[37:12] Speaker 1: which gave viewers a bit more visual continuity. But Webb
[37:17] Speaker 1: took his time and got a dynamic that will not
[37:21] Speaker 1: the same as what he had before, was right for
[37:24] Speaker 1: the show in a direction that would be very successful
[37:28] Speaker 1: in terms of the quality. I don't think making it
[37:33] Speaker 1: less interesting was a decision as much as it really
[37:37] Speaker 1: was a necessity because you only have so much time
[37:42] Speaker 1: in an episode, and if you do take ten minutes
[37:46] Speaker 1: of the episode to deal with this major event. You
[37:52] Speaker 1: just don't have time for the same quality of story
[37:56] Speaker 1: and involved investigation, and you've got to tell something that's
[38:00] Speaker 1: a bit simpler. But at the end of the day,
[38:03] Speaker 1: what really mattered there were the emotional stakes. For one,
[38:07] Speaker 1: I mean, just like Joe Friday, most of us were
[38:10] Speaker 1: not emotionally invested in the case as much as we
[38:15] Speaker 1: were with Ben's death, Brain's Benton rights on Instagram. What
[38:20] Speaker 1: a good way to honor Ben Romero in the show
[38:22] Speaker 1: and in real life. Jack Webb picked good replacement partners,
[38:27] Speaker 1: but Romero is my favorite. Too bad we didn't get
[38:29] Speaker 1: to see him in the TV show. Well, we actually did,
[38:33] Speaker 1: but very very briefly. Two episodes had been filmed when
[38:38] Speaker 1: he passed away. Suddenly those episodes are The Human Bomb
[38:42] Speaker 1: and The Big Actor. Now, his part in the Big
[38:46] Speaker 1: Actor is not all that large, but in the Human
[38:50] Speaker 1: Bomb that is. And I said that when we released
[38:54] Speaker 1: the episode on video theater last year, that was a
[38:58] Speaker 1: role that really only Ben Romero could fulfill. And it
[39:03] Speaker 1: is such a good episode. Of course, two episodes, it's
[39:07] Speaker 1: not even one percent of the nineteen fifties TV series,
[39:11] Speaker 1: But thankfully both of those are in circulation. We did
[39:16] Speaker 1: them on a public domain video theater, and of course
[39:18] Speaker 1: you can find those online. And then Brian writes, yes,
[39:22] Speaker 1: this one was different. Jack Web did things his way,
[39:25] Speaker 1: as you say in closing, and in this case it
[39:28] Speaker 1: gave us a somber, respectful reflection. Then we go over
[39:32] Speaker 1: to YouTube, where we have some comments regarding the Big Overtime.
[39:37] Speaker 1: Jeffrey raised some good questions about the practicality of some
[39:41] Speaker 1: of the measures poor trade, which in terms of quickly
[39:46] Speaker 1: identifying the bills, and I kind of talked about that
[39:49] Speaker 1: last week, but appreciate the comment, though I don't have
[39:53] Speaker 1: anything additional to add, but really to appreciate it because,
[39:58] Speaker 1: particularly on YouTube, because it helps us grow so much.
[40:02] Speaker 1: Sasoff says regarding my proposed Martian Manhunter series, I'm thinking
[40:09] Speaker 1: that the Martian Manhunter should star Wolson and Bill Bixby,
[40:15] Speaker 1: And of course that is a reference to the TV
[40:19] Speaker 1: program My Favorite Marshan, which aired from nineteen sixty three
[40:23] Speaker 1: to nineteen sixty six. Well, I was imagining this production
[40:28] Speaker 1: being done during the golden age of radio. Bixby didn't
[40:32] Speaker 1: work in radio. He was a little too young by
[40:36] Speaker 1: the time he got into acting. Radio drama was fading,
[40:40] Speaker 1: with the line shares of rules in Hollywood going to
[40:45] Speaker 1: already established actors. Ray Woolston was of the age where
[40:52] Speaker 1: he could have had quite a radio career, but he didn't.
[40:56] Speaker 1: He was really a stage actor until late fifties. The
[41:02] Speaker 1: only radio role he had we actually played a few
[41:07] Speaker 1: years back when we played an episode of The warth
[41:12] Speaker 1: Hour that was a tribute to Tony Barrett. It also
[41:16] Speaker 1: featured him reprising the role from his Broadway play, So
[41:21] Speaker 1: long story short or long story somewhat shorter. I would
[41:27] Speaker 1: say that Ray Wilson was a fine actor, but just
[41:31] Speaker 1: not what we had in mind for the part, but
[41:33] Speaker 1: appreciate the suggestion. Now it's time to thank our Patreon
[41:37] Speaker 1: supporter of the day, and I want to thank Jesse,

[42:11] Speaker 13: The police found any actual clues to work on?
[42:13] Speaker 14: Well, no, that's where you're wrong, said, it's Sergeant Drumming.
[42:16] Speaker 15: That's right, Danny boy.
[42:18] Speaker 13: Hi second, so they drag you in on this, Yeah,
[42:21] Speaker 13: Fred's all You know how it is drumming. When the
[42:23] Speaker 13: police can't get anywhere, you call in the experts.
[42:26] Speaker 6: Oh and I thought you were a friend of mine.
[42:27] Speaker 5: Ms.
[42:28] Speaker 13: Pullman who said that Bill was wrong Sageant when he
[42:31] Speaker 13: told me your boy is havn't found any clues to
[42:33] Speaker 13: who did this job and knocked off Jimson.
[42:35] Speaker 6: Cooley knocked him off? Huh know what's that mean?
[42:39] Speaker 15: One of the boys picked up a drunk last night
[42:41] Speaker 15: right in this neighborhood. Yeah, late this morning, when he
[42:44] Speaker 15: sobered up enough, we sent him home for a little while.
[42:46] Speaker 15: Ago he comes budging back the headquarters. Seems he suddenly
[42:49] Speaker 15: remembered something he saw around here last night.
[42:51] Speaker 6: Come on, Sageant. We must have been around two or
[42:54] Speaker 6: three am. That's when we figured the robbery.
[42:56] Speaker 12: Could and the murder of Jimson Cooley.
[42:58] Speaker 5: Yeah, please get to the point drumming.
[43:01] Speaker 15: Well, he was holding up that building across the street,
[43:03] Speaker 15: mining his own business and his bottle, when all of
[43:05] Speaker 15: a sudden he saw a car come round from in
[43:07] Speaker 15: the back of this building and heading north on the.
[43:09] Speaker 6: Trail, maybe two of them.
[43:11] Speaker 15: He wasn't sure any I don't want he noticed was
[43:13] Speaker 15: a little pickup truck.
[43:14] Speaker 13: But in his condition, I suppose he didn't get a.
[43:16] Speaker 15: License mwhere he didn't need to, Johnny, because he recognized
[43:19] Speaker 15: that truck. Oh yes, sir, And he said it was
[43:22] Speaker 15: all loaded down with something with an old piece of
[43:24] Speaker 15: canvas stretched.
[43:25] Speaker 12: Over the step that was stolen from me.
[43:27] Speaker 13: Maybe you say he recognized that pickup Whose was it?
[43:30] Speaker 15: Yeah, Johnny, was that old nineteen thirty model? He used
[43:33] Speaker 15: a whole shrimping. Why Who's that's right?
[43:36] Speaker 3: That's right? Was that old truck in?
[43:38] Speaker 6: Jimson Dooley.
[43:38] Speaker 1: I hope you'll be with us then in the meantime.
[43:41] Speaker 1: Send your comments to Box thirteen at Great Detectives dot net.
