[1:47] Speaker 3: What about, sir, A little matter of embezzlement. Oh nearly
[1:51] Speaker 3: ten thousand dollars. It's been stolen from the Berkeley Furniture
[1:55] Speaker 3: manufacturing company there in Hartwood.
[1:57] Speaker 2: You're connected with Berkeley Furniture.
[1:58] Speaker 3: No, No, actually I am not.
[2:01] Speaker 2: Then what's your connection with this investment?
[2:03] Speaker 3: I suggest you check with Berkeley and of course the
[2:07] Speaker 3: insurance company.
[2:08] Speaker 2: Of course, when you have learned the.
[2:09] Speaker 3: Facts from them, I am sure you will find it

[2:16] Speaker 3: Yes, goodbye, mister Dollar.
[2:17] Speaker 2: Yeah, but where in HOLLYO? Hello? Hello, Oh, he's a
[2:23] Speaker 2: lot of help. Bob Bailey and the Exciting Adventures of
[2:35] Speaker 2: the Man with the Action Fact Expense account America's fabulous
[2:39] Speaker 2: freelance insurance investigators Trulee Shahnny Dollar, and I'll act one
[2:49] Speaker 2: of yours, truly Johnny Dollar. Expense account submitted by a
[3:07] Speaker 2: special investigator Johnny Dollar to the Eastern Liability and Trust
[3:10] Speaker 2: Company Home Office, Hartford, Connecticut. Following is an account of
[3:14] Speaker 2: expenses encourage during my investigation of the Hollywood Mystery matter
[3:22] Speaker 2: expense account, I had won ten cents for a phone
[3:24] Speaker 2: called a hal Spidel. Who's my regular contact at Eastern
[3:27] Speaker 2: Liability and Trust.
[3:28] Speaker 3: Well, Hi, Johnny, nice to talk to you again.
[3:30] Speaker 2: Yeah, nice to talk to you.
[3:31] Speaker 4: Hall.
[3:31] Speaker 2: Listen, have you received a report of loss from the
[3:34] Speaker 2: Berkeley Furniture Manufacturing Company?
[3:36] Speaker 3: Well, they're a client of ours, but no, what make
[3:38] Speaker 3: you ask a thing like that?
[3:39] Speaker 2: A phone call I just got.
[3:40] Speaker 3: They called you direct.
[3:41] Speaker 2: Now, somebody did, a man by the name of Party Cool,
[3:47] Speaker 2: old everything, Johnny, I'm holding.
[3:50] Speaker 3: Hey, what did you say? When we'll find out how much?
[3:55] Speaker 1: Johnny?
[3:55] Speaker 2: Yeah, you've got an assignment boy, and it's Berkeley Furniture
[3:59] Speaker 2: Manufacturing Company s Pusselman. Ye, ten thousand.
[4:01] Speaker 3: How you found out about it? Listen, I just found
[4:04] Speaker 3: out about it themselves. So get on over there and
[4:06] Speaker 3: see what goes, will you?
[4:07] Speaker 2: Well, we'll do. Yeah. My informant, the man who'd called me,
[4:17] Speaker 2: had really known something, but how to locate him? Idem
[4:20] Speaker 2: to a dollar forty five taxi to the Berkeley Plan
[4:23] Speaker 2: on the northwest edge of town. It's a small company,
[4:26] Speaker 2: but an old one. When I flashed my credentials to
[4:28] Speaker 2: the receptionist, I was immediately shown into the office of
[4:31] Speaker 2: the high end money himself. I must see your insurance
[4:36] Speaker 2: company acts very properly, mister Dollar. It's anouncer. Thanks, mister Berkeley.
[4:41] Speaker 2: I'll get straight to the point, sir, we've suffered a
[4:43] Speaker 2: considerable lots. Yeah, so I understand from hell spial at
[4:46] Speaker 2: Eastern Liability and Trust. Ten thousand dollars, wasn't it? Yes,
[4:50] Speaker 2: maybe ten thousand dollars, But I don't recall mentioning the
[4:53] Speaker 2: amount of mister spidel. In any event, mister Dollar, what
[4:57] Speaker 2: I want is that money back. I don't care what
[5:00] Speaker 2: you do with the beat, all right? Have you any
[5:01] Speaker 2: idea who took it? Mister Berkeley? I certainly have a
[5:05] Speaker 2: young great boosir, one of our bookkeepers, a gentleman who
[5:09] Speaker 2: had been with the company over thirty years. Hey, what
[5:12] Speaker 2: are you smiling about, miss Dollar? Well, he's stolen this
[5:15] Speaker 2: money from you, But you still call him a gentleman
[5:18] Speaker 2: because I always thought he was. Did his job, never complain,
[5:22] Speaker 2: that's your measure of a gentleman. Hey, what's that? How
[5:25] Speaker 2: much money did he earn, mister Berkeley? Sixty sixty five
[5:29] Speaker 2: dollars a week? What difference does it make? Just wondered
[5:33] Speaker 2: an old man living alone, there's plenty for him, unless,
[5:36] Speaker 2: of course, he was gambling something like that. Gambling him
[5:40] Speaker 2: of course, not never had enough money. Trouble at home?
[5:42] Speaker 2: Maybe is he married. No, never be able to support
[5:45] Speaker 2: a wife after thirty years with your company. I paid
[5:49] Speaker 2: him as much as I thought he was worth. Yeah,
[5:52] Speaker 2: or as little as you thought you could get away
[5:54] Speaker 2: with it. That is really no concern to yours. Return
[5:57] Speaker 2: of the money is all right. Where does he live,
[5:59] Speaker 2: mister Berkeley, in a small apartment on the north side
[6:01] Speaker 2: of town. I why did you ask see him yesterday?
[6:04] Speaker 2: Yesterday morning? Said he had to see his doctor in
[6:07] Speaker 2: the afternoon. Yes, it's against my usual practice, but I
[6:10] Speaker 2: let him off. But of course you decided the doc
[6:14] Speaker 2: his pay. Naturally, I have to keep discipline in a
[6:18] Speaker 2: place like this. Oh sure. In this morning, when I
[6:21] Speaker 2: opened the safe, I discovered that the money was missing
[6:24] Speaker 2: nine thousand, nine hundred and eighty four seventy five the
[6:28] Speaker 2: case that we had on hand for emergencies. I also
[6:32] Speaker 2: discovered that he hadn't come to the office, so I
[6:34] Speaker 2: phoned his apartment and I learned that our respected gentleman
[6:39] Speaker 2: bookkeeper left town yesterday afternoon, bag and baggage. That doesn't
[6:43] Speaker 2: necessarily mean that he took the money. I'd like to
[6:46] Speaker 2: know why not, or was he the only one who
[6:48] Speaker 2: had access to the safe? Of course, not all of
[6:51] Speaker 2: the bookkeepers have how many of them? Others? I made three?
[6:54] Speaker 2: But you think for one minute they'd dared take that
[6:57] Speaker 2: money and then come back here and face me. Maybe
[7:01] Speaker 2: you got a point there. What have you notified the
[7:03] Speaker 2: police of this loss? No, I prefer that the whole
[7:06] Speaker 2: thing be kept as quiet as possible for the sake
[7:09] Speaker 2: of my company's reputation. Please remember that, sir, whatever you're saying,
[7:13] Speaker 2: mister Berkeley, that's why I have no desire to prosecute him,
[7:16] Speaker 2: why I refuse to even file charges as long as
[7:20] Speaker 2: I get the money back. Yeah. Now, what's his address?
[7:23] Speaker 2: Eleven thirty one North Maple Street. But as I told you,
[7:27] Speaker 2: he isn't there. He's left town. Yeah, you told me
[7:30] Speaker 2: how hold him? Man? Is he in his sixties? But
[7:32] Speaker 2: what difference does that make? Oh and mister dollar, Yeah,
[7:37] Speaker 2: just how did you happen to know about this so soon?
[7:40] Speaker 2: I mean the amount that was stolen from somebody who
[7:42] Speaker 2: called me on the phone, somebody who apparently knew a
[7:45] Speaker 2: good deal about it. If I can locate him, get
[7:48] Speaker 2: in touch with him, he can probably be a lot
[7:49] Speaker 2: of help and running down this come to think of it,
[7:53] Speaker 2: you have I'm doing what his name is the bookkeeper Nambler, Yeah,
[7:57] Speaker 2: Barons her, Yes, Harley barn Act two of yours, truly
[8:15] Speaker 2: Johnny Dollar in a moment, and now Act two of yours,
[8:20] Speaker 2: truly Johnny Dollar and the Hollywood mystery matter. So the
[8:29] Speaker 2: embezzler of the ten thousand dollars was Parley Baron, the
[8:32] Speaker 2: same man who'd called me on the phone, apparently called
[8:35] Speaker 2: me before the company even knew the money was missing,
[8:37] Speaker 2: and he'd had the audacity to inform me that I
[8:40] Speaker 2: should contact him, Yeah, somewhere in Hollywood, which is like
[8:44] Speaker 2: saying the needle is somewhere in the haystack. I had
[8:47] Speaker 2: him three two fifty for a taxi to the little
[8:49] Speaker 2: apartment house in North Maple Street. I paid off the
[8:52] Speaker 2: driver and then walked into the open foyer and looked
[8:54] Speaker 2: for the usual bank of mailboxes to find out which
[8:56] Speaker 2: apartment was Parley Baron's.
[9:00] Speaker 5: Not.
[9:00] Speaker 2: Sorry, driver, you go ahead if you want him. Let's
[9:03] Speaker 2: see Davis Parrots. Oops, excuse me, that's all right, spailing
[9:12] Speaker 2: Pierce ropes and oh here we are Baron, Apartment one
[9:18] Speaker 2: old same.
[9:19] Speaker 4: Yes, I've been a young man. Are you a salesman?
[9:22] Speaker 3: No?
[9:22] Speaker 2: I was just looking up the apartment number of mister
[9:24] Speaker 2: Parley Baron.
[9:26] Speaker 4: He ain't here, mister, sure, no, sir, he left your
[9:29] Speaker 4: bagging baggage yesterday afternoon.
[9:31] Speaker 2: Any idea where he wants? Who are you cops or something?
[9:35] Speaker 4: Here?
[9:36] Speaker 2: My credentious.
[9:39] Speaker 4: Johnny Dollar insurance?
[9:41] Speaker 2: Yeah that's right now. Look I want you to let
[9:43] Speaker 2: me into his apartment.
[9:44] Speaker 4: Where's the right his work? Something wrong, mister Dollar?
[9:51] Speaker 2: Just a routine investigation. O.
[9:53] Speaker 4: Yes, I was sure he'd done nothing wrong.
[9:56] Speaker 2: Oh why do you say that?
[9:58] Speaker 4: Nice quiet old man and like him?
[10:00] Speaker 2: Why should he only excitement he ever has is when
[10:04] Speaker 2: his niece.
[10:05] Speaker 4: Comes to visit with him.
[10:06] Speaker 2: His niece, yes, sir, names Virginia Jenny Lockhart, wonderful girl
[10:12] Speaker 2: sort of drops in here to look after him once.
[10:15] Speaker 4: In a while, cook him a good meal.
[10:18] Speaker 2: Now here we are, m well, it sure looks like
[10:26] Speaker 2: he left in a hurry. Closets open, the doors pulled out?
[10:32] Speaker 2: Where can I find this niece you mentioned?
[10:34] Speaker 4: Why didn't you see her when you just came in?
[10:37] Speaker 2: That girl who bumped into me down on the lobby,
[10:38] Speaker 2: That was Jenny Lockheart must have been, Yes, she dropped
[10:42] Speaker 2: in for a visit with her uncle, found him gone,
[10:45] Speaker 2: and then looked out again, and I didn't have sense
[10:47] Speaker 2: enough to get a good look at her. Here's a
[10:50] Speaker 2: picture of her, mister, said he to him from her
[10:53] Speaker 2: vacation last winter, vacation blue sky and palm trees down Hollywood.
[10:59] Speaker 2: I understand. Is that where she's headed for? Now?
[11:02] Speaker 4: Well, now you got me there.
[11:05] Speaker 2: Wait a minute, Yeah, that you picked up, mister, I said, No,
[11:10] Speaker 2: I guess yeah. It's addressed to her Jenny, my dear,
[11:16] Speaker 2: the doctor you had me see has finally told me
[11:18] Speaker 2: the truth. Is this his handwriting? Eh? That is all right,
[11:23] Speaker 2: it's finally told me the truth. I have less than
[11:27] Speaker 2: a week to live, and so, for the first time
[11:30] Speaker 2: in my life, except for some happy moments with you,
[11:34] Speaker 2: I'm going to really live make up for some of
[11:37] Speaker 2: the things I've had to miss all these years. Say. Yes,
[11:41] Speaker 2: you may have some idea where I've gone, but please, please, dear,
[11:45] Speaker 2: don't try to follow me. You are loving Holly. Yeah,
[11:50] Speaker 2: like I said, that's what she ran off of the
[11:52] Speaker 2: taxi I had. Oh you want me to call you
[11:55] Speaker 2: a taxi, mister, I sure do, Brother and fast Item
[12:06] Speaker 2: four seven fifty for a trip to the airport that
[12:08] Speaker 2: should have got the cabby locked up for life. We
[12:10] Speaker 2: ran every stoplight along the way. So what happened? I
[12:13] Speaker 2: got there just in time to see a plane taking off,
[12:16] Speaker 2: and the man at the ticket counter politely informed me
[12:18] Speaker 2: that Virginia Lockhart was among the passengers headed for New
[12:21] Speaker 2: York and where would she go from there? Hollywood, I'd
[12:24] Speaker 2: bet my last nickel on it. Yeah, and she could
[12:26] Speaker 2: lead me to the man I was after I checked
[12:29] Speaker 2: the schedules of all the airlines leaving New York. If
[12:32] Speaker 2: I took the next plane out of Hartford, I could
[12:33] Speaker 2: barely make a flight out of New York to the
[12:35] Speaker 2: West Coast. In other words, Hollywood item five for a
[12:42] Speaker 2: through ticket. When we arrived in New York, where I
[12:45] Speaker 2: had only seconds to change planes, I was the first
[12:47] Speaker 2: one off, and then I saw she was boarding a
[12:49] Speaker 2: plane from another ramp. By breaking a couple of records
[12:52] Speaker 2: for the one hundred yard dash and pulling my way
[12:53] Speaker 2: through the gate, I managed to climb aboard just as
[12:55] Speaker 2: the doors were being closed. A quick flash at my
[12:58] Speaker 2: credentials kept the stewardess and throwing me often. In a
[13:00] Speaker 2: couple of minutes, we were airborne.
[13:06] Speaker 5: Now I guess we'd better make some arrangement about your ticket, sir.
[13:09] Speaker 2: Eh tickets, yes, sir, oh no here, I already have
[13:12] Speaker 2: any Hey, oh thank you.
[13:15] Speaker 1: I'll just.
[13:18] Speaker 3: Mister Dollar.
[13:18] Speaker 6: Yeah, I'm sorry, but this ticket is for Los Angeles.
[13:22] Speaker 2: Sure, sure, that's where I'm going.
[13:24] Speaker 5: Well, not on this plane. I'm afraid this is a
[13:28] Speaker 5: non stop flight to Miami. What yes, sir, Miami.
[13:33] Speaker 2: Florida, Act three of yours, truly Johnny Dollar. In a moment, no,
[13:43] Speaker 2: Act three of yours, truly Johnny Dollar and the Hollywood
[13:46] Speaker 2: mystery matter. Wait a minute, this plane is headed for Florida.
[13:53] Speaker 5: Yes, sir, non stop flight to Miami.
[13:56] Speaker 2: But I thought this was Look, I got to get
[13:58] Speaker 2: to Los Angeles to Hollywood.
[14:00] Speaker 3: I'm sorry, mister Dollard.
[14:01] Speaker 2: Oh not half as sorry as I am. So what
[14:05] Speaker 2: do I do now?
[14:06] Speaker 4: I'm afraid there isn't much you can do.
[14:09] Speaker 5: So why don't you go up in the cabin where
[14:10] Speaker 5: there's one extra seat and well, I'll just relax and
[14:14] Speaker 5: enjoy it.
[14:16] Speaker 2: Okay, Miss Great. I've been so sure it was Virginia Lockhart.
[14:24] Speaker 2: I'd seen climb aboard this plane, that she'd leave me
[14:27] Speaker 2: to her uncle in Hollywood do wherever he was in Hollywood?
[14:30] Speaker 2: So what happened. I was stuck aboard a plane to Miami,
[14:34] Speaker 2: all right. I took the advice of the stewardess and
[14:36] Speaker 2: walked forward into the cabin to find a seat, And
[14:38] Speaker 2: for once, luck was with me. The one vacant seat
[14:41] Speaker 2: in that whole plane was right next to Yeah, you
[14:44] Speaker 2: guessed it to Jenny Lockhart. But why Miami? Could she
[14:49] Speaker 2: possibly know that I was on the trail of Parley Barn?
[14:53] Speaker 2: Was this a trick to leave me office trail? I
[14:56] Speaker 2: decided there was only one thing to do. Play it
[14:58] Speaker 2: like I hadn't the least idea in the world who
[14:59] Speaker 2: she was, And at the tay same time, see if
[15:02] Speaker 2: I could learn anything from her. As uh, as long
[15:09] Speaker 2: as we're uh seat mates on this trip, we may
[15:11] Speaker 2: as well know each other. My name's Johnny, Uh Johnny Dollar. Ms.
[15:16] Speaker 4: Uh how do you do, mister Dollar?
[15:18] Speaker 2: Be uh kind of nice to get on down south
[15:21] Speaker 2: and away from all of snow and cold on it?
[15:27] Speaker 2: Would would you like some champagne? I I understand. All
[15:30] Speaker 2: I have to do is flag down the stewardess. She'll
[15:32] Speaker 2: be uh how about it?
[15:36] Speaker 6: Uh no, thank you?
[15:39] Speaker 2: Uh well, uh excuse me for saying so, But you
[15:43] Speaker 2: look worried about something.
[15:46] Speaker 4: I'm sure it wouldn't interest you.
[15:48] Speaker 2: Oh no, maybe not, but uh, you know, sometimes it
[15:52] Speaker 2: does a lot of good to cry on somebody's shoulder.
[15:55] Speaker 2: And since we'll probably never see each other again after
[15:57] Speaker 2: this trip, and well, I I have a broad shoulders.
[16:00] Speaker 6: Thank you. But it's not necessary.
[16:04] Speaker 2: Oh sorry, I don't mean it going down to Florida
[16:13] Speaker 2: for a vacation.
[16:15] Speaker 6: No, I'm going to Florida to try to save somebody's life. Oh,
[16:21] Speaker 6: but I'd rather not talk about it.
[16:26] Speaker 2: And she didn't. How did she talk about anything else
[16:29] Speaker 2: during the rest of the flight. As we came into Miami,
[16:32] Speaker 2: I decided the only thing I could do was transfer
[16:34] Speaker 2: to a plane for Los Angeles and hope for the best.
[16:37] Speaker 2: But she was my only real lead to Parley Baron,
[16:40] Speaker 2: and if I left her here, I went on to Hollywood.
[16:43] Speaker 2: So I changed my mind. I decided to stay with her.
[16:46] Speaker 2: I had them six nine dollars even for a taxi
[16:48] Speaker 2: that followed hers out of Miami Airport, then headed north.
[16:51] Speaker 2: And why do we end up Hollywood? Hollywood, Florida, Hollywood
[16:57] Speaker 2: by the Sea and the Diplomat Hotel. I watched her
[17:01] Speaker 2: make inquiries at the desk heard the clerk teller room
[17:03] Speaker 2: seven sixteen. I managed to get an elevator before she did,
[17:06] Speaker 2: and by the time she reached the door of seven
[17:08] Speaker 2: sixteen and raised her hand and knock, I was standing
[17:10] Speaker 2: right beside her.
[17:13] Speaker 6: Mister Johnny, does.
[17:14] Speaker 4: What are you doing here?
[17:16] Speaker 2: I've been following you, Jenny What to find your uncle
[17:20] Speaker 2: Parley Baron, who stole ten thousand dollars in the company
[17:23] Speaker 2: was working for He what? And unless I'm all wet,
[17:27] Speaker 2: this is the door to his suite.
[17:28] Speaker 6: You say he's too.
[17:29] Speaker 2: I found the note he'd written to Eugenie back at
[17:32] Speaker 2: his apartment in.
[17:32] Speaker 6: Hertford, mister dollar, Johnny.
[17:35] Speaker 2: And it all ties up, including his phone call to me.
[17:39] Speaker 2: It was to make me think he was headed for Hollywood, California,
[17:42] Speaker 2: to throw me off. Give him time, please, She said
[17:45] Speaker 2: that for once in his life, but the few remaining
[17:48] Speaker 2: days of it, he was really going to live it up.
[17:52] Speaker 2: So he came here to the Hollywood that you told
[17:55] Speaker 2: him about. Came here for one last desperate, glorious flat.
[18:01] Speaker 6: That's what he thought. But don't you see you.
[18:03] Speaker 2: The more I've thought about it, I thought about that
[18:06] Speaker 2: crummy penny pinching outfit that he worked for for thirty
[18:09] Speaker 2: miserable years. The more I hated this assignment, hated the
[18:14] Speaker 2: thought of having to deprive that poor old man of
[18:16] Speaker 2: this one last chance to get some fun out of life.
[18:19] Speaker 2: Because all I know about him is that he's a
[18:22] Speaker 2: decent sword who's been taking advantage of him.
[18:23] Speaker 6: He's a wonderful man, and he's been a good man
[18:26] Speaker 6: all his life.
[18:27] Speaker 2: Jenny, don't you see unless I get him return the
[18:30] Speaker 2: ten thousand dollars to his friend, Johnny.
[18:32] Speaker 6: Listen, he can't have spent ten thousand dollars and I'll
[18:36] Speaker 6: make up the rest. Sorry, Jenny, you're not the police,
[18:41] Speaker 6: you're not the law.
[18:42] Speaker 2: I have a job to do.
[18:44] Speaker 6: Does that dirty old company want the money or does
[18:47] Speaker 6: it want him?
[18:49] Speaker 3: Johnny? You want the sink of my company's reputation. That's
[18:53] Speaker 3: why I have no desire to prosecute.
[18:55] Speaker 2: Wow. I refused leaving file charges as long as I
[18:59] Speaker 2: get the money, Johnny.
[19:03] Speaker 6: If I give you enough to take the ten thousand
[19:06] Speaker 6: dollars back to.
[19:07] Speaker 2: Them, Oh, oh kay, Jenny, it's.
[19:13] Speaker 4: A dear Oh thank you.
[19:17] Speaker 6: I'm awfully glad. And because of something else, Johnny. The
[19:22] Speaker 6: reason why I was looking for him, what do you
[19:25] Speaker 6: mean the new doctor. I'd had him go to a
[19:27] Speaker 6: couple of weeks ago, my doctor. He gave him a
[19:30] Speaker 6: lot of tests. Then Uncle went back to see him
[19:33] Speaker 6: yesterday afternoon. It was to find out the result of
[19:36] Speaker 6: the tests, and the doctor told him wrong. The lab
[19:39] Speaker 6: reports had got mixed up.
[19:41] Speaker 2: You mean that he isn't going to die?
[19:45] Speaker 6: No, And the doctor tried to call him but couldn't
[19:48] Speaker 6: reach him, so he called me. That's why I went
[19:51] Speaker 6: to his apartment, but he'd left, so I came down
[19:53] Speaker 6: here to try to find him. I tried to tell you, Johnny,
[19:57] Speaker 6: because well, don't you see he's gonna be all right.
[20:03] Speaker 2: Well, and Jenny, I guess that leads only one more
[20:05] Speaker 2: thing to be done. What Johnny tell him the good news?
[20:16] Speaker 3: Oh?
[20:17] Speaker 2: I don't know. Maybe I'm just a sucker for a
[20:19] Speaker 2: good looking girl, and maybe this makes me an accessory
[20:24] Speaker 2: to the crime. But you know something, and you can
[20:27] Speaker 2: blame it on the holiday season anything you like. I
[20:30] Speaker 2: don't care expense account total, including the trip back to Hartford. Well,
[20:35] Speaker 2: a happy New Year to you too, yours truly, Johnny Dollar.
[20:53] Speaker 2: Our star will return in just a moment because of
[20:56] Speaker 2: another adventure in Hollywood, Florida. But that one you'll have
[21:00] Speaker 2: to read about in the February issue of Harper's Bazaar.
[21:04] Speaker 2: It's just out, so grab a copy, will you? Yours Truly,
[21:07] Speaker 2: Johnny Dollar. Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, starring Bob Bailey, originates
[21:18] Speaker 2: in Hollywood and has written, produced, and directed by Jack Johnstone.
[21:22] Speaker 2: Heard in our cast were Virginia Greg Geene Tatum, Harley Bear,
[21:26] Speaker 2: Boris Lewis, Junius Matthews, and Frank Gerstool. Be sure to
[21:30] Speaker 2: join us next week, same time and station for another
[21:33] Speaker 2: exciting story of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. This is Dan
[21:37] Speaker 2: Cubberly speaking. Gun Smoke rises today on the CBS Radio.
[21:42] Speaker 1: Network, Welcome Back. Jack Johnstone wrote many scraps for Johnny Doller,
[21:55] Speaker 1: but a scrap with a sentimental storyline that's key mystery
[22:02] Speaker 1: involves the fact that there is a Hollywood, Florida is
[22:06] Speaker 1: probably the most Jack Johnstone script idea ever. There's a
[22:12] Speaker 1: lot I can say about this one. First of all,
[22:15] Speaker 1: I do have to give it to poorly Baron that
[22:19] Speaker 1: it was clever to send Johnny on a false trail.
[22:24] Speaker 1: But you know what would have been even more clever
[22:28] Speaker 1: not giving a clue at all, because here's the thing,
[22:32] Speaker 1: this is a middle aged, downtrodden bookkeeper, not the Riddler.
[22:38] Speaker 1: You don't have to call and give riddles and clues
[22:42] Speaker 1: about your location. Also, this is the second episode with
[22:47] Speaker 1: a character named Poorly Baron. There's the Poorly Baron matter
[22:53] Speaker 1: from nineteen fifty seven, which was episode four four nine
[22:57] Speaker 1: five for us, And in addition to the one of
[23:01] Speaker 1: the lost episodes from nineteen fifty eight was the Perilous
[23:06] Speaker 1: Parley matter, featuring a separate character named Parley. Although that
[23:14] Speaker 1: does seem like there might have been some confusion, as
[23:17] Speaker 1: according to the notes in John Abbott's book Who Is
[23:20] Speaker 1: Johnny Dollar Matter? Johnny at first thought it might have
[23:24] Speaker 1: been a reference to a Parley at a racetrack, and
[23:29] Speaker 1: someone did ask a while back when I kept referencing
[23:32] Speaker 1: John Abbott for those and thought he might have been
[23:35] Speaker 1: an actor of some sort. Well, not as far as
[23:38] Speaker 1: I know. John Abbott is a radio historian who has
[23:43] Speaker 1: done a lot of work on yours truly, Johnny Dollar,
[23:47] Speaker 1: and in particular Life of Bob Bailey, also Charles Russell,
[23:53] Speaker 1: and coming up with some great resources and information. Mister
[23:58] Speaker 1: Abbot's books books, The Who is Johnny Dollar matter. Are
[24:03] Speaker 1: reference books that I did refer to quite frequently regarding
[24:09] Speaker 1: this series, and he actually went to at the time
[24:15] Speaker 1: the scripts were at the Thousand Oaks Library. He went
[24:18] Speaker 1: through all of those scripts and wrote down the plot
[24:23] Speaker 1: details and captured them so we can actually find out
[24:27] Speaker 1: what happened in the lost episodes, at least those that
[24:30] Speaker 1: were from Hollywood. I will also say that the powers
[24:35] Speaker 1: of an insurance investigator were really quite amazing. Yeah, if
[24:40] Speaker 1: you're just an ordinary policeman and you show up and
[24:43] Speaker 1: you say I'd like to search this room, I'll be like,
[24:47] Speaker 1: you have a warrant. Uh, well no, then I can't
[24:51] Speaker 1: let you in. But however, you come in as an
[24:54] Speaker 1: insurance investigator and you show them that credential, They're like, oh, sure,
[24:58] Speaker 1: go ahead, search room. You're an insurance investigator. And that
[25:04] Speaker 1: means that, yeah, you can just search anything. And you
[25:08] Speaker 1: can even board a plane. All right, you don't have
[25:12] Speaker 1: a ticket for this plane and you're on board. I'm
[25:16] Speaker 1: an insurance investigator. Well that changes everything. One point of
[25:21] Speaker 1: curiosity in this episode, and it kind of cuts off here,
[25:27] Speaker 1: is that there's a reference to an article in the
[25:32] Speaker 1: February nineteen fifty nine issue of Harper's Bazaarre. It's a
[25:37] Speaker 1: little unclear what that story that's set in Hollywood, Florida
[25:42] Speaker 1: is about, whether it's time to Johnny Dollar or not.
[25:46] Speaker 1: I was able to find a scan of the table
[25:51] Speaker 1: of contents of that particular issue of Harper's Bizarre. And
[25:56] Speaker 1: one thing to remember with magazines of all sorts back
[25:59] Speaker 1: then is they did actually publish fiction, and Harper's Bazaar
[26:04] Speaker 1: was no different. There's a lot of fashion stuff, but
[26:07] Speaker 1: there were around five different stories in there. Now none
[26:11] Speaker 1: of those actually scream Johnny Dollar or mystery to me.
[26:16] Speaker 1: But I really do want to find out what was
[26:19] Speaker 1: in that magazine, and I've got resources to go through.
[26:23] Speaker 1: I decide I'm going to record this commentary first. I
[26:28] Speaker 1: might even be able to find it at my local library.
[26:31] Speaker 1: Looks like the Harper's Bazaar should be on pro sources,
[26:35] Speaker 1: but if not, I will go down other avenues and
[26:39] Speaker 1: hopefully I'll report back to you on what was the
[26:42] Speaker 1: big deal in that magazine. Listener comments and feedback now,
[26:46] Speaker 1: and we have some comments on Facebook regarding the Double
[26:50] Speaker 1: Trouble matter, and this is from Gigi who writes love
[26:55] Speaker 1: those Sergeant Donald Bellweather auto safety commercials. I wondered for
[27:00] Speaker 1: a long time who the actor was before I recognized
[27:03] Speaker 1: him as her vigrant. Do you have any info on
[27:08] Speaker 1: these PSAs? And specifically, she wants to know who played
[27:13] Speaker 1: the wife in them. The PSAs were put out by
[27:17] Speaker 1: the National Safety Council. I am horrible at identifying voices
[27:23] Speaker 1: until I really get them down straight, and I think
[27:28] Speaker 1: that can be doubly true for female voices. I did
[27:32] Speaker 1: actually find an old thread discussing this on the Old
[27:36] Speaker 1: Time Radio Researchers Facebook group, and one person stated that
[27:45] Speaker 1: the Lilian Biaf was the wife, and honestly, I think
[27:50] Speaker 1: that does sound about the quality of her voice, but
[27:54] Speaker 1: I am open to other interpretations. And then Joey Wright's
[27:59] Speaker 1: Thursday morning, while driving to work, I listened to Johnny
[28:02] Speaker 1: Dollar and I was thinking it was Friday FLORTI instead
[28:05] Speaker 1: of Thursday. Adam, you are messing with my routine. Well,
[28:09] Speaker 1: I am so sorry. There was a little bit of
[28:12] Speaker 1: a mistake where both Johnny Dollar and Dragnet released the
[28:17] Speaker 1: same day, So so sorry for that little mix up.
[28:21] Speaker 1: Appreciate your comment and your support, Joey. Then we turned
[28:24] Speaker 1: to Spotify, where Peter Wrights I was surprised to see
[28:29] Speaker 1: that Rhode Island still has the lowest driver fatality rate
[28:33] Speaker 1: in the country. I was a little surprised by that too,
[28:37] Speaker 1: because I'd watched a lot of well not a lot,
[28:40] Speaker 1: but quite a few clips of that show that was
[28:44] Speaker 1: on Caught in Providence, which was in essentially a traffic court,
[28:50] Speaker 1: and it seemed like there were a lot of cases,
[28:53] Speaker 1: although when I thought about it further, those seemed to
[28:56] Speaker 1: deal more with parking rather than moving violation. I've never
[29:00] Speaker 1: been to Rhode Island myself, so that was all I
[29:03] Speaker 1: had to go off of. Then we turned to the
[29:06] Speaker 1: site called x with a comment on the Gruesome Spectacles matter.
[29:10] Speaker 1: Jonathan said, this police chief was not a credible professional.
[29:16] Speaker 1: To be fair to Johnny Dollar, they were he wasn't
[29:20] Speaker 1: really trying to capture the idea of the professional lawman,
[29:26] Speaker 1: and there are quite a few episodes of Johnny Dollar
[29:29] Speaker 1: where what they portray is not a professional lawman, somebody
[29:37] Speaker 1: who kind of does police work on the side, and
[29:42] Speaker 1: that would happen and may still happen today and very
[29:48] Speaker 1: thinly populated bow crime areas. Everybody agrees law and order
[29:55] Speaker 1: is important, but you don't get enough crime, and you
[30:00] Speaker 1: don't have enough people to support a full time police force.
[30:05] Speaker 1: So you have one person or two people who in
[30:10] Speaker 1: the event of a crime or some sort of public
[30:13] Speaker 1: safety emergency where a sheriff or police would be called for,
[30:18] Speaker 1: would they would be willing to fill in. And so
[30:23] Speaker 1: these policemen could in theory be a little less professional
[30:30] Speaker 1: because it's not their full time profession and not the
[30:34] Speaker 1: way they relate to the world most of the time.
[30:37] Speaker 1: And Johnny Doller that the series loves to include those
[30:42] Speaker 1: sort of characters, so I wouldn't consider it a black
[30:46] Speaker 1: mark against the series. It goes to the type of
[30:49] Speaker 1: person that's being portrayed. Now, I don't know for certain
[30:53] Speaker 1: how common these sort of arrangements were in nineteen fifty
[31:00] Speaker 1: eight or fifty nine, or whether, as Johnstone sometimes did,
[31:04] Speaker 1: he was taking things that he experienced in his youth
[31:09] Speaker 1: and writing about them as if they were current even
[31:11] Speaker 1: though they weren't. All right, well, now it's time to
[31:14] Speaker 1: thank our Patreon supporter of the day, and I want
[31:17] Speaker 1: to thank John Patreon supporter since September twenty fifteen, currently

[31:52] Speaker 1: radio ware.
[31:55] Speaker 7: This is Eliza gun A Loganbury Point me caught me
[32:00] Speaker 7: a spy?
[32:04] Speaker 3: You say that again.
[32:05] Speaker 7: I'm Liza god A Loganberry Point Me and I've caught
[32:10] Speaker 7: me a spy.
[32:13] Speaker 3: Actually, I'm a little Where.
[32:17] Speaker 5: Is he.
[32:18] Speaker 7: Lying on the sofa over there?
[32:21] Speaker 3: Did he here's you? Why doesn't he get up?
[32:23] Speaker 7: What you ain't see? The condition?
[32:25] Speaker 4: He's in the unconscious?
[32:28] Speaker 3: Very How do you know he's a spy?
[32:32] Speaker 8: Well he told me about rowing alone and hearing our
[32:37] Speaker 8: bellboy at the narrows, and then rowing an hour and
[32:41] Speaker 8: landing on our beach. Well, I was born here and
[32:47] Speaker 8: I know this coast, and there ain't nobody rowing from
[32:51] Speaker 8: the bell boy at the reef to this shore running
[32:54] Speaker 8: ebb tide in one hour.
[32:56] Speaker 7: He's a pervaricator.
