[0:33] Speaker 1: special from Boise, Idaho. This is your host, Adam Grant.

[0:42] Speaker 1: you are enjoying the program, to please follow us using
[0:46] Speaker 1: your favorite podcast software.
[0:49] Speaker 2: Well, we're turning.
[0:50] Speaker 1: To a series that we've visited a few times, the
[0:54] Speaker 1: only ones on the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio.
[0:58] Speaker 1: It has also featured on the Amazing World of Radio
[1:02] Speaker 1: and even on the Old Time Radio Snack Wagon. The
[1:06] Speaker 1: series Proudly We Hailed had a very long and twisting
[1:11] Speaker 1: history during which it had multiple hosts. It had a
[1:15] Speaker 1: period where it was fifteen minutes long, and it had
[1:17] Speaker 1: a period where it was half an hour long. It
[1:20] Speaker 1: was produced sometimes in New York, sometimes in Hollywood. Today
[1:24] Speaker 1: we're turning to an era of the program that we've
[1:28] Speaker 1: not visited. The program began with C. P. McGregor, the
[1:34] Speaker 1: prolific radio producer, as the host of the program, but
[1:39] Speaker 1: in late nineteen fifty the series shifted to New York,
[1:44] Speaker 1: with Lee Tracy serving as host of the series and
[1:49] Speaker 1: also star of most episodes, including today. The original air
[1:54] Speaker 1: date on this one is October twenty ninth, nineteen fifty
[1:58] Speaker 1: and the title is follow that man.
[2:06] Speaker 3: Proudly we hail, no for another.
[2:17] Speaker 4: Proudly we Hail one of radio's outstanding traumatic half hours,
[2:20] Speaker 4: starring Lee Tracy, and presented transcribed by Your Army and
[2:24] Speaker 4: Your Air Force from Radio City, New York. Here is
[2:33] Speaker 4: your host and star on Proudly we Hail, the distinguished
[2:37] Speaker 4: Broadway stage screen and radio star Lee Tracy.
[2:42] Speaker 5: Thank you Kenneth bang Hard, and hello everyone, welcome again
[2:45] Speaker 5: to Proudly we Hail. You're really going to enjoy this program.
[2:48] Speaker 5: It's all about a private eye.
[2:51] Speaker 6: You know.
[2:51] Speaker 5: I'm anxious to begin the play, so I'll be back
[2:53] Speaker 5: in just a moment after a few words from Ken Banghart.
[2:56] Speaker 4: Highly important words too, Lee, Your Army and your Air
[3:00] Speaker 4: Force need men and women right now, and if you volunteer,
[3:03] Speaker 4: you'll have your own choice of a number of fields.
[3:05] Speaker 4: So why don't you visit your nearest Army and Air
[3:08] Speaker 4: Force recruiting station today and now, Lee, our audience is
[3:11] Speaker 4: eager to hear what a private eye does how we operate.
[3:14] Speaker 5: Don't believe me, Ken, This particular investigator certainly gets into
[3:18] Speaker 5: some mighty tight spots. But well, you know, us private
[3:22] Speaker 5: eyes never a dull moment in our lives.
[3:25] Speaker 4: With our star Lee Tracy in the role of Clint Flint,
[3:28] Speaker 4: your Army and your Air Force present the proudly we
[3:31] Speaker 4: hail production of Follow that Man.
[3:41] Speaker 5: Clint Flint's the name occupation, Private Eye. Midland City is
[3:48] Speaker 5: my beach. The city is peaceful and quiet and dull.
[3:51] Speaker 5: At a rainy Monday afternoon. My office is in the
[4:04] Speaker 5: cellar of the Parker Building looks out on a panmoraic
[4:06] Speaker 5: view of the furnace. I never get tired of that view.
[4:09] Speaker 5: It means something to me. Only I've never been able
[4:12] Speaker 5: to figure out what my girl Friday is. Myrtle Lush.
[4:16] Speaker 5: You just heard her sweet spirited laughter a couple of
[4:19] Speaker 5: seconds ago. Myrtle's a cute kid, plenty smart. I wouldn't
[4:24] Speaker 5: be in business without her. Like I said, cute kid.
[4:29] Speaker 5: The case I'm going to tell you about I call
[4:32] Speaker 5: the Blue Goose Caper. It all started the day she
[4:37] Speaker 5: showed up. I remember, I was sitting in my office
[4:39] Speaker 5: looking out of the furnace thinking things over when Myrtle
[4:42] Speaker 5: gently intruded upon my thoughts. Myrtle, how many times have
[4:48] Speaker 5: I told you not to use the coal shoot so
[4:52] Speaker 5: much fun. There wouldn't be someone out there to see me,
[4:56] Speaker 5: would there?
[4:57] Speaker 7: Yes, it's a woman, and she said she had to
[4:59] Speaker 7: see you right away.
[5:02] Speaker 5: Well what does she look like? All right? Send her in?
[5:11] Speaker 5: After Murdle went out, I sat there alone for a moment,
[5:13] Speaker 5: thinking about things, my eyes on the furnace. That's how
[5:17] Speaker 5: it was when she walked into my life and my business.
[5:20] Speaker 5: You meet a lot of people, all kinds. I was
[5:23] Speaker 5: used to that sort of thing, but when our eyes
[5:25] Speaker 5: found each other and locked, everything changed for me. Skin
[5:30] Speaker 5: like curdled yogurt, tawny hair, with a faint smell of
[5:34] Speaker 5: burnt ashes, eyes pink and searching. It's difficult to describe
[5:41] Speaker 5: those first impressions. They seared their way deep into me
[5:45] Speaker 5: time stood there and waited for us to catch up. Strange,
[5:50] Speaker 5: maddening creature that she was. She was the first to
[5:53] Speaker 5: break the silence.
[5:54] Speaker 7: Hey are you one of them? Seeing noise?
[5:57] Speaker 5: I'm Clint Flint, private operator at your service. Won't you
[6:02] Speaker 5: sit down?
[6:02] Speaker 7: Miss lam Rod McGee is the name? You got quite
[6:06] Speaker 7: a layout here.
[6:08] Speaker 6: It serves nice view too.
[6:10] Speaker 5: I can see that we understand each other.
[6:12] Speaker 7: That's the way I am understanding.
[6:15] Speaker 5: How can I help you, miss McGhee.
[6:17] Speaker 7: Haha, call me flam Clint.
[6:20] Speaker 5: All right, Flam, what's the caper?
[6:24] Speaker 7: You make it hard for a girl to breathe Clint,
[6:27] Speaker 7: My brother Ram is missing. I'm scared. I'm scared, way
[6:31] Speaker 7: down deep inside. I have a feeling.
[6:33] Speaker 5: Suppose you just give me the whole thing right from
[6:36] Speaker 5: the beginning.
[6:37] Speaker 7: Well, it's kind of hard to know where to start.
[6:41] Speaker 7: Ram is not a bad boy. Heigh strung, I gets
[6:43] Speaker 7: you'd call him. He had a run in with the
[6:45] Speaker 7: law a few years back with throwing an old lady
[6:47] Speaker 7: down a flight of stairs. He was just at that age.
[6:50] Speaker 5: You know, sure you can't help boysh enthusiasmic.
[6:54] Speaker 7: Well, Ram learned his lesson, and when he got off
[6:57] Speaker 7: for good behavior, you never saw such a sweet girl.
[7:00] Speaker 7: He didn't try to throw anybody downstairs for a long time.
[7:03] Speaker 7: But then then he got mixed up with the crowd.
[7:07] Speaker 5: The crowd flying, Yeah, the.
[7:09] Speaker 7: Big boys at that classy nightclub li Rookery Charmont.
[7:12] Speaker 5: The place got on Grove and Vine.
[7:15] Speaker 7: Yeah, that's the joint. Anyhow, Big Nick Splotch took a
[7:18] Speaker 7: liking to Ram. Nick runs the place. Well, to make
[7:21] Speaker 7: it short, it wasn't long before Ram was a part
[7:24] Speaker 7: of the crowd. Overnight he changed. He threw another old
[7:27] Speaker 7: lady downstairs and went out to live at the racetrack.
[7:30] Speaker 7: I heard he was doing a lot of gambling and
[7:32] Speaker 7: losing heavy. And one of the boys told me he
[7:34] Speaker 7: owed Big Nick ten Gee's and Nick was kind of sore. Well,
[7:39] Speaker 7: that crowd of the rookery place for keeps, and something
[7:42] Speaker 7: Ram said that night made me feel like they were
[7:44] Speaker 7: going out to get him.
[7:45] Speaker 5: What was that, Flam?
[7:47] Speaker 7: He said, Big Nick's going to ventilate me if I
[7:50] Speaker 7: don't pay up the dough I owe him.
[7:52] Speaker 5: Flam. Have you gone to the police.
[7:53] Speaker 7: Yeah, what could they do?
[7:55] Speaker 5: Smart girl? I don't like it. I don't like any
[8:02] Speaker 5: of it. Now, think hard. What time was it Tuesday
[8:07] Speaker 5: night that you saw him?
[8:08] Speaker 7: Eight o'clock on the button?
[8:10] Speaker 5: Are you sure?
[8:11] Speaker 6: You sure?
[8:12] Speaker 5: Don't lie to me, Flam. I can't do anything for
[8:15] Speaker 5: you if you try to hide things. Now, what time
[8:20] Speaker 5: was it?
[8:20] Speaker 7: Well, all right, it was to rate.
[8:24] Speaker 5: That's better. If you want me to find your brother,
[8:27] Speaker 5: don't try to cover up for it.
[8:29] Speaker 7: I know, but it's not easy to say these things.
[8:32] Speaker 5: Listen, Flam. I want you to go home and get
[8:34] Speaker 5: a good night's sleep. You'll feel a whole lot better tomorrow.
[8:38] Speaker 5: In the meantime, I'll do a little nosing around.
[8:41] Speaker 7: You mean you'll take the case.
[8:42] Speaker 5: Yep, that's just what I mean.
[8:43] Speaker 7: But I'm broke.
[8:45] Speaker 5: Never mind about that. Now, just leave your address and
[8:47] Speaker 5: phone number with myrtle. I'll get in touch with your
[8:50] Speaker 5: as soon as I can track down a couple of leaps.
[8:53] Speaker 7: You may look like a dumb lug, but you sure
[8:56] Speaker 7: got a good heart.
[8:59] Speaker 5: After she'd gone, I sat there alone in the growing darkness,
[9:02] Speaker 5: looking out at the furnace. After a while, I got
[9:05] Speaker 5: out of fifth of milk and poured myself four straight fingers.
[9:10] Speaker 5: I took a neat well I'd made my decision. I
[9:16] Speaker 5: knew a lot of heads might fall before I was through.
[9:18] Speaker 5: It might even mean curtains for Clint Flint. But this
[9:22] Speaker 5: was my kind of case. I left my car at
[9:29] Speaker 5: the corner of Congrave and walked slowly west forward Dickinson.
[9:32] Speaker 5: It was a dark, muddy night with a smell of rain.
[9:35] Speaker 5: With my snap brim hat pulled low over my eyes,
[9:37] Speaker 5: I took the wrong turn suddenly found myself back at
[9:41] Speaker 5: my car again. I shrugged my wide shoulders and figured
[9:46] Speaker 5: if it was going to be like that, all right,
[9:49] Speaker 5: I can play it on the cuff. Two five minutes later,
[9:54] Speaker 5: I walked into l rookery. Charma, your minds are barn
[10:03] Speaker 5: like place full of glass blocks with pronium plated cigarette girls.
[10:08] Speaker 5: There's a lot of class caters to the distaff side.
[10:11] Speaker 5: I ambled up to the padded barn quickly sized up
[10:14] Speaker 5: the situation. There are only a couple there, But seated
[10:17] Speaker 5: at the far end of the bar, all by yourself
[10:20] Speaker 5: was Big Nick's girl Strager. We'd known each other in
[10:24] Speaker 5: the fourth grade. I walked over and sat down on
[10:28] Speaker 5: the stool beside her.
[10:30] Speaker 2: What ll it be?
[10:30] Speaker 5: Mac, double milk on the rocks? Oh?
[10:35] Speaker 2: What?
[10:35] Speaker 5: He hello? Little Clint Flint and so Hi Strager. Haw's trick.
[10:41] Speaker 7: I haven't seen him in months.
[10:43] Speaker 5: And let's not get personal.
[10:45] Speaker 6: Hi, Honey, this luck bother you.
[10:48] Speaker 5: Nikki. Nah, he's just puzzling through his ears.
[10:52] Speaker 8: He got something on your mind, Flint? Or is this
[10:54] Speaker 8: a purely social visit?
[10:56] Speaker 3: A little of both.
[10:57] Speaker 6: Nick, there was something on your mind that would have
[10:59] Speaker 6: to be little play.
[11:01] Speaker 5: It for laughs, Neck, That's what I like.
[11:04] Speaker 7: Plenty of laughs all around.
[11:05] Speaker 6: Shut up, stugger, All right, what do you want to
[11:09] Speaker 6: make it fast?
[11:10] Speaker 5: And it'd be quieter in your office, wouldn't it.
[11:12] Speaker 8: So now we've got to have quiet a you know,
[11:15] Speaker 8: as a matter of fact, it would be quieter, much
[11:17] Speaker 8: quieter right this way, mister Flint.
[11:22] Speaker 5: This was beginning to get interesting. There was tension in
[11:26] Speaker 5: the air. I could see it flickering through Stregger's long
[11:30] Speaker 5: green hair. I could see it rippling and big Nick's
[11:33] Speaker 5: bulging shoulders that I followed him cat footing down a
[11:36] Speaker 5: dimly lit hallway. We came to a big, heavy door
[11:40] Speaker 5: on the left hand side. It was mark private. Go carefully, Flint,
[11:45] Speaker 5: a small voice worn, Go carefully.
[11:51] Speaker 6: Go right in, Fats Killer, come in here.
[11:56] Speaker 5: Fats and the Killer were two of the largest ugliest
[11:59] Speaker 5: torpedoes I'd ever set eyes on. They looked mean too.
[12:04] Speaker 5: I realized I'd have a soft pedal my approach if
[12:06] Speaker 5: I wanted to get out of this place in one piece.
[12:09] Speaker 5: Wouldn't pay to be too direct now. The best attack
[12:13] Speaker 5: would be a subtle flanking movement.
[12:16] Speaker 6: You were saying, mister Flint.
[12:17] Speaker 5: I wasn't saying, Nick. I was asking, what do you
[12:21] Speaker 5: know about the disappearance of Ram McGee? Who's Ram McGee,
[12:27] Speaker 5: you're lying and I know it.
[12:28] Speaker 6: That's killer. Would you be so good as to take
[12:32] Speaker 6: care of mister flint for me?
[12:35] Speaker 5: They led me down and narrow, dimly lit hallway toward
[12:38] Speaker 5: a door at the far end. I knew I'd have
[12:41] Speaker 5: to play this one close to the chest. These babies
[12:43] Speaker 5: were rough. They meant business. You came to the door,
[12:47] Speaker 5: SATs opened it and pushed me out ahead of it.
[12:51] Speaker 5: I saw her on the back porch. Before me. There
[12:53] Speaker 5: was a long wooden stairway leading down into a courtyard
[12:58] Speaker 5: filled with ash cans. This was no time to await development.
[13:01] Speaker 5: This was a time for action. I moved fast, tore
[13:04] Speaker 5: my arm away from fats and grab freeze neck. After
[13:17] Speaker 5: a while, I pulled myself out of an ash can.
[13:22] Speaker 5: My head hurt. There was a taste of melon rind
[13:26] Speaker 5: and my mouth. When I got the melon rind out,
[13:30] Speaker 5: I felt much better. I brushed myself off, picked up
[13:33] Speaker 5: my hat and pulled it low over my eyes. Then
[13:36] Speaker 5: I went out to the street and the limped slowly
[13:38] Speaker 5: north and Gavin Road. No one had to tell me
[13:40] Speaker 5: I was onto something big. The pieces were all there, true,
[13:43] Speaker 5: some of them didn't quite fit, but the outline of
[13:45] Speaker 5: the pattern were becoming clearer. It was big, big, and dirty.
[13:55] Speaker 5: I tooled along on Sebastian heading knees to kept working
[13:58] Speaker 5: the whole thing over my mind. I knew despite everything,
[14:00] Speaker 5: I was making progress. I knew too, I had to
[14:02] Speaker 5: be awfully careful from here on in setting it up
[14:05] Speaker 5: like a chess problem. I could see certain ramifications. When
[14:08] Speaker 5: I came to Gramercy, I turned left onto the racetrack road.
[14:11] Speaker 5: A few minutes later, dim the lights pulled up one
[14:14] Speaker 5: hundred feet away from the racetrack station. The stadium stood
[14:17] Speaker 5: huge and silent and empty against the night sky. I
[14:22] Speaker 5: got out of the car, sticking close to the shadows,
[14:25] Speaker 5: made my way toward the main entrance. All around the
[14:29] Speaker 5: stadium there ran a wire fence about ten feet high.
[14:34] Speaker 5: I realized it could be only one way to get in.
[14:36] Speaker 5: I backed off about twenty feet from the fence. I
[14:39] Speaker 5: got set and spurted forward. At the right instant, I leaped.
[14:47] Speaker 5: After I had gotten up, brushed myself off. I knew
[14:51] Speaker 5: there had to be another way. I limped on. In
[14:56] Speaker 5: a few seconds. I came to the main entrance. Once inside,
[14:58] Speaker 5: I stopped, let my eyes become accustomed to the darkness.
[15:03] Speaker 5: Suddenly the hair went up on the back of my neck.
[15:05] Speaker 5: I knew I wasn't alone. Someone was in the passageway
[15:08] Speaker 5: with me. I stood motionless, frozen, not moving a muscle.
[15:12] Speaker 5: The chips were down. I steeled myself to wait, to
[15:16] Speaker 5: keep calm. It was a vague, vague something moving ahead
[15:20] Speaker 5: of me. I sprang forward in a dive.
[15:24] Speaker 3: Oh.
[15:29] Speaker 5: I got up and brushed myself off again. Already in
[15:33] Speaker 5: my mind there was a faint glimmer of light, intangible, yes,
[15:37] Speaker 5: but it was growing. Five minutes later I found what
[15:41] Speaker 5: I had known must be there by the betting windows.
[15:46] Speaker 5: Enough light came in so I could see him, sitting
[15:48] Speaker 5: in a chair tilted against the wall. His head dropped
[15:52] Speaker 5: forward on his chest soundlessly. I edged closer to him.
[15:57] Speaker 5: My reasoning had been right. Everything fitted into place. It
[16:01] Speaker 5: was now or never. I got set and plunged forward.
[16:10] Speaker 5: When I was over, got to my feet slowly. He
[16:13] Speaker 5: put up a terrific fight. Now he lay motionless. I
[16:17] Speaker 5: reached down. I grabbed him by the shoulders, and I
[16:18] Speaker 5: hauled him up right, got him onto my back and
[16:20] Speaker 5: headed for the main entrance. I knew this wasn't a
[16:22] Speaker 5: healthy place. To stay, but I'd better get out and
[16:25] Speaker 5: get out quick. There wasn't much time left. Lee.
[16:39] Speaker 4: We're really getting a bang out of your portrayal of
[16:42] Speaker 4: Clint Flint, the glint in all American private eyes. We'll
[16:45] Speaker 4: be looking forward to the second act of follow that
[16:47] Speaker 4: man in just a moment. Right now, however, I like
[16:50] Speaker 4: all of our audience to join me for a brief
[16:52] Speaker 4: but very serious message. It's to the men and women
[16:55] Speaker 4: of the medical profession. As you've dotless heard over the
[16:58] Speaker 4: year before, your United States Army and your United States
[17:01] Speaker 4: Air Force need physicians, dentists, nurses, and other medical personnel,
[17:05] Speaker 4: and as we all know, both services always go all
[17:07] Speaker 4: out to provide the very highest standards of care. So
[17:10] Speaker 4: you doctors, dentists, nurses, dietitians, therapists, veterinarians who volunteer now
[17:16] Speaker 4: will not only receive extra benefits, but at the same
[17:18] Speaker 4: time will also be serving your country when needed. Most
[17:21] Speaker 4: write or wire the Surgeon General of the United States
[17:24] Speaker 4: Army or the Surgeon General of the United States Air Force.
[17:26] Speaker 3: In Washington, d C.
[17:28] Speaker 4: Today you are listening to proudly we hail and now
[17:32] Speaker 4: for the second act with your star Lee Tracy, as
[17:35] Speaker 4: Clint Flint in the proudly we hail production of follow
[17:40] Speaker 4: that man.
[17:54] Speaker 7: Miss McGee is here, mister Flint, All right, Channerin does
[17:58] Speaker 7: nothing ever?
[17:59] Speaker 6: Go home?
[18:00] Speaker 5: I don't know she lives here. Sit down, Flam.
[18:02] Speaker 7: What's it all about?
[18:03] Speaker 5: It's about Ram?
[18:05] Speaker 3: Ram? Who your brother?
[18:06] Speaker 5: Ram?
[18:07] Speaker 3: Oh?
[18:07] Speaker 6: That lug?
[18:08] Speaker 5: Look here, Flam. You did want me to find him?
[18:10] Speaker 5: Didn't brace yourself? Flam? I've found your brother?
[18:15] Speaker 2: Holy cow?
[18:16] Speaker 7: Is he in one piece?
[18:17] Speaker 5: More or less? He put up a terrific fight. Didn't
[18:20] Speaker 5: want to come with me because he was scared, But
[18:22] Speaker 5: I brought him along anyway. Where you got him in
[18:24] Speaker 5: that closet?
[18:25] Speaker 7: Well, get him out. Let's have a look at him.
[18:28] Speaker 5: Sit right where you are, and don't be afraid, afraid
[18:31] Speaker 5: of what of anything that frightens you. I'll see that
[18:35] Speaker 5: no harm comes to you.
[18:36] Speaker 7: Are you gonna take Ram out of that closet?
[18:39] Speaker 5: Patience, my dear? Tie him up and gagging? Now, listen, Ram,
[18:45] Speaker 5: your sister's here, so you can just relax. Nobody's gonna
[18:48] Speaker 5: hurt you. Old still, will I cut these cords?
[18:53] Speaker 2: Uh?
[18:54] Speaker 5: Gag? Okay, fella, come on out and say hello to Flam.
[19:00] Speaker 5: Where who's that? What your brother, Ram A card That
[19:05] Speaker 5: ain't my brother, Ram, That ain't anybody's brother. Ram.
[19:08] Speaker 7: I'm getting naughty. You awaken a girl.
[19:13] Speaker 5: Cut that out.
[19:14] Speaker 6: I'm gonna have you thrown in jail.
[19:17] Speaker 3: I want to cop.
[19:18] Speaker 5: What's your name? You pulling down?
[19:21] Speaker 6: Let me on me? Sit still?
[19:24] Speaker 2: Now?
[19:24] Speaker 5: What's your name?
[19:26] Speaker 6: My name is Matt Weavin.
[19:28] Speaker 5: Now you let me go quiet down? What were you
[19:32] Speaker 5: doing out of that racetrack?
[19:33] Speaker 6: What was I doing?
[19:35] Speaker 5: What was I well?
[19:36] Speaker 6: That's where I wait the night watchman.
[19:39] Speaker 3: You're lying?
[19:41] Speaker 6: You're crazy?
[19:42] Speaker 5: Oh don't you ever learn? I don't want to make
[19:46] Speaker 5: this tough for you, but you're gonna talk if I
[19:49] Speaker 5: have to choke the life out of here. You understand,
[19:52] Speaker 5: all right? Now, let's have it from the beginning.
[19:59] Speaker 2: When do you want?
[20:00] Speaker 5: Where's Ram Maghee? Where is he?
[20:04] Speaker 2: How shit?
[20:05] Speaker 5: I now?
[20:07] Speaker 2: I never heard of him?
[20:08] Speaker 3: You let me out here, not till your talk.
[20:10] Speaker 2: I ain't done nothing wrong. I don't know know Ram McGee.
[20:14] Speaker 1: And when I get out of here, I'm gonna go
[20:16] Speaker 1: to a company.
[20:16] Speaker 2: Have you thrown in jail?
[20:18] Speaker 5: Okay, that's the way you want to play ball, Scram,
[20:23] Speaker 5: but just remember I won't be responsible. You're hiding what
[20:26] Speaker 5: you know, and when it catches up to you, I
[20:28] Speaker 5: won't be there to give you a hand. It's too
[20:31] Speaker 5: big for you to play alone. I could have made
[20:34] Speaker 5: it worth your while. Now scram get out of here.
[20:39] Speaker 5: I ever see you around again, I'll forget how my gentleman,
[20:48] Speaker 5: I sat there alone in the office, going over the
[20:50] Speaker 5: whole thing from the very beginning. True elements of confusion
[20:55] Speaker 5: still remain, but I knew with absolute certainty that only
[20:59] Speaker 5: one made your piece was missing from the puzzle. When
[21:03] Speaker 5: I had that, I had everything. I knew now where
[21:07] Speaker 5: I would find it. The risk was doubled, but once committed,
[21:12] Speaker 5: I could not retreat. L Rookery Charmond was my destination
[21:21] Speaker 5: once again. I sat in a padded barroom, Streger next
[21:25] Speaker 5: to me. Haven't I seen you around someplace? Yeah, Streger,
[21:29] Speaker 5: I guess you have. I knew I couldn't forget a
[21:31] Speaker 5: face like that. Taunts won't get you anywhere. Streger. You're
[21:36] Speaker 5: a pretty sharp tomato, but you can play it a
[21:39] Speaker 5: little bit too close to the back board. I can strega.
[21:42] Speaker 5: I want you to answer me one question. Where's Ram McGee?
[21:46] Speaker 5: I don't know where is he? Look, what do you
[21:49] Speaker 5: got to gain? By clamming up. You play straight with
[21:53] Speaker 5: me and I'll see that you get a break. Oh
[21:56] Speaker 5: that's wonderful, lover boy, Why don't you go home to
[22:00] Speaker 5: I'm trying to be nice about this. I'm sure you are,
[22:04] Speaker 5: just because you're want to be your back again. I
[22:08] Speaker 5: get around Nick.
[22:09] Speaker 6: Maybe you'd like to go where it's quiet again.
[22:11] Speaker 5: That might not be a bad idea this time. I
[22:15] Speaker 5: think Straga had better come along.
[22:17] Speaker 6: Stregga, you come too.
[22:19] Speaker 8: We're all going where we can be real nice and quiet.
[22:25] Speaker 5: I followed them down the narrow, dimly lit hallway to
[22:28] Speaker 5: the door mark Private. There was something very familiar about
[22:32] Speaker 5: the whole scene, but I couldn't quite put my finger
[22:34] Speaker 5: on it. This I realized it would be for high
[22:36] Speaker 5: stakes winner take all. It was now or never.
[22:42] Speaker 2: I'm right in.
[22:43] Speaker 5: I'm gonna be quiet in the corner.
[22:45] Speaker 3: Is that all right? Now?
[22:46] Speaker 5: Sure?
[22:46] Speaker 6: You can be quiet any place you want. Can't see Clinton.
[22:49] Speaker 5: That'll depend on a lot of things.
[22:51] Speaker 6: Excuse me a second. That's a killer. Come on in here, okay, boys, Ah,
[22:58] Speaker 6: you were saying.
[22:59] Speaker 5: Clint, just this, I want you to come around with I.
[23:02] Speaker 6: Think you've met Fats and Killer.
[23:05] Speaker 5: I've seen him around Hi, sit.
[23:11] Speaker 6: Boy, Okay, well.
[23:13] Speaker 5: Listening, I don't want to take up too much of
[23:15] Speaker 5: your time. I I just want the answer to one question.
[23:19] Speaker 6: Well, it doesn't seem too hard to take. What's the question?
[23:22] Speaker 5: Don't make it difficult for all of us? Where's ram My? Gee?
[23:27] Speaker 6: You know I swear you said in that chair and
[23:28] Speaker 6: asked me that before.
[23:29] Speaker 5: Don't hedge. I want it straight. That's the way I
[23:31] Speaker 5: like it. Well, where is it here? That's more like it.
[23:35] Speaker 3: Go on?
[23:35] Speaker 5: You know where he is?
[23:36] Speaker 8: You killer, Trump double you boys, show mister Flint out.
[23:43] Speaker 6: The game's over.
[23:45] Speaker 2: They lighted a pleasure.
[23:47] Speaker 5: I'll be seeing you any time, boy, anytime at all.
[23:52] Speaker 6: Everything on the home.
[23:57] Speaker 5: They let me down the narrow dimly let the hallway
[24:00] Speaker 5: toward a door I knew i'd seen before. They pushed
[24:04] Speaker 5: me out on the back porch. A long flight of
[24:06] Speaker 5: wooden stairs dropped away before me to a courtyard filled
[24:09] Speaker 5: with ash cans. I knew this scene, if only I
[24:13] Speaker 5: could place it. This was no time for thought, however,
[24:16] Speaker 5: this was a time to act and fast. I pulled
[24:19] Speaker 5: back away from them, pure, my arm free from Killer's grasp,
[24:21] Speaker 5: swung sharply on the balls of my feet, flashed out
[24:24] Speaker 5: with my right, with everything I had behind it. After
[24:35] Speaker 5: a while, I pride myself flew from me ash can
[24:39] Speaker 5: I had somehow become tangled with There was a taste
[24:42] Speaker 5: of ashes in my mouth, but after I'd spit them out,
[24:45] Speaker 5: I felt better. I picked up my snap brim hat,
[24:49] Speaker 5: pulled it low over my eyes. After brushing myself off,
[24:51] Speaker 5: I limped slowly out to the street. Dawn was just
[24:55] Speaker 5: beginning to color the sky. A lot had happened this night,
[24:58] Speaker 5: A lot I'd never forget. It had been a long
[25:01] Speaker 5: night and a rough one, but everything fitted together, everything
[25:04] Speaker 5: was in its place. I had the answer at last.
[25:12] Speaker 5: It was the next morning. I sat in my office,
[25:14] Speaker 5: looking out at the furnace, waiting for the hands of
[25:17] Speaker 5: the clock to reach ten. I'd made up my mind
[25:20] Speaker 5: I wouldn't call her before that. She needed her sleep
[25:23] Speaker 5: and I needed to do some thinking. The whole thing was,
[25:28] Speaker 5: in one sense fantastically simple, in another most complex. I
[25:33] Speaker 5: worked it over in my mind, looking at it from
[25:36] Speaker 5: all angles. Then it was ten o'clock. I picked up
[25:40] Speaker 5: the phone, dialed her.
[25:42] Speaker 7: Number, Vanillie's Bowling Alley.
[25:48] Speaker 5: Lamb hich this this Clinton flam.
[25:51] Speaker 7: Oh Clint Good morning, Clint. How are you feeling today?
[25:55] Speaker 5: I'll do flam. I got some news for you. I
[25:58] Speaker 5: don't want you to get excited, but I'm onto something big.
[26:01] Speaker 3: See.
[26:01] Speaker 7: That's well, Clint. I always knew you'd make good. What's
[26:04] Speaker 7: it all about?
[26:05] Speaker 5: I don't think it'll be long before I know exactly
[26:08] Speaker 5: where your brother is.
[26:10] Speaker 7: You want to speak to him?
[26:12] Speaker 2: Big to who?
[26:13] Speaker 7: My brother Ram? He's right here, showed up bright and
[26:16] Speaker 7: early this morning.
[26:17] Speaker 5: What where was He went down to.
[26:19] Speaker 7: Atlantic City for a few days. Said he had a
[26:21] Speaker 7: nice time too.
[26:23] Speaker 5: I knew that was it. If he'd stayed there another day,
[26:27] Speaker 5: i'd a found him. Sure, what do you want to
[26:30] Speaker 5: find him for?
[26:31] Speaker 7: Clint? When he's right here.
[26:33] Speaker 5: Let's put all that behind this flam. We can forget
[26:39] Speaker 5: if we try hard, we can. What how about lunch?
[26:43] Speaker 5: We'll talk it over. See.
[26:44] Speaker 7: I'm sorry, Clint, I can't. I'm getting married today. How
[26:47] Speaker 7: about tomorrow?
[26:48] Speaker 5: Getting married?
[26:49] Speaker 2: Who?
[26:50] Speaker 5: Who's a lucky guy?
[26:51] Speaker 7: Big Nicked Blatch. I'm gonna be missus, Big Nick. Do
[26:54] Speaker 7: you know him? He's an awful nice guy.
[26:58] Speaker 5: I sat there for a long long time after that,
[27:03] Speaker 5: seeing nothing, not even the furnace. I felt like I'd
[27:07] Speaker 5: been hitting the teeth with a lotus cement. Nothing made
[27:10] Speaker 5: any sense anymore. She'd meant everything, and now she was
[27:15] Speaker 5: gone out of my life forever. Well, a guy in
[27:21] Speaker 5: my business should know better. In the fall for a dame,
[27:24] Speaker 5: I always did learn the hard way, but I knew
[27:28] Speaker 5: deep down things would never be quite the same. What
[27:35] Speaker 5: is it, Myrtle is a woman to see you, mister Flint?
[27:39] Speaker 5: A woman? What does she look like? Sender in sender in.
[27:56] Speaker 4: Slee many thanks for making all of his laugh and
[27:58] Speaker 4: congratulations on being a private eye.
[28:01] Speaker 3: You know that Clint Flint was quite a boy.
[28:03] Speaker 5: Well, Canna was a lot of fun. But I'm sure
[28:05] Speaker 5: that all of us realize that the real life private
[28:07] Speaker 5: eyes do a wonderful job and service. And speaking of service,
[28:12] Speaker 5: you have a message of real importance.
[28:14] Speaker 4: Well, we've had our laugh with Clint Flint, ladies and gentlemen,
[28:17] Speaker 4: but right now I'd like to get in a few
[28:19] Speaker 4: serious words. Let's face it, building up the defense of
[28:23] Speaker 4: our nation isn't an easy job. You can do your
[28:26] Speaker 4: part by joining the United States Army. For instance, You
[28:29] Speaker 4: young men can have a choice of several branches if
[28:31] Speaker 4: you volunteer immediately engineers, armor, infantry, artillery, take your choice.
[28:38] Speaker 4: Ask your nearest US Army and US Air Force Recruiting
[28:41] Speaker 4: station for full details. Today this has been another program
[28:54] Speaker 4: on Proudly we Hail, presented in cooperation with this station
[28:57] Speaker 4: by your Army and your Air Forcedly we Hail stars
[29:01] Speaker 4: Lee Tracy. Supporting mister Tracy in the cast were Miriam Wolf,
[29:05] Speaker 4: Patricia Hustley, Helen Christian, Jo DeSantis, Jack Jason, and Bill Lipton.
[29:11] Speaker 4: Follow That Man was written by Dewittcup The music was
[29:14] Speaker 4: composed and conducted by John Guaneri. Proudly we Hail, as
[29:17] Speaker 4: directed by Charles Wilkes. This is Kenneth Banghart speaking and
[29:21] Speaker 4: here again is your host and star Lee Tracy.
[29:26] Speaker 5: We hope you'll be with us next week for another
[29:28] Speaker 5: Proudly we Hail presentation. It's entitled Concerto and it's a
[29:32] Speaker 5: touching romantic story together with some wonderful music.
[29:35] Speaker 2: Go bye, welcome back.
[31:04] Speaker 4: Well.
[31:04] Speaker 1: Lee Tracy was doing his best at parodying Sam Spade,
[31:10] Speaker 1: and I think that there are elements of parody both
[31:13] Speaker 1: of the radio program as well as the film, particularly
[31:17] Speaker 1: when he went into that hole tell me the truth thing,
[31:20] Speaker 1: and she admitted it was eight ten rather than eight o'clock,
[31:23] Speaker 1: and this was an episode that had some funny moments.
[31:27] Speaker 1: I thought it was kind of cute when they had
[31:29] Speaker 1: the bridge game breakout. I do think there's a sense
[31:34] Speaker 1: in which there really wasn't enough comedic or blot material
[31:40] Speaker 1: to keep this at a high quality.
[31:43] Speaker 2: For a whole half hour.
[31:45] Speaker 1: It felt like it could have been a sketch from
[31:48] Speaker 1: a radio comedy series or even a fifteen minute program
[31:53] Speaker 1: and held up a bit better, but still I thought
[31:56] Speaker 1: it was though that had its moments. Now we'll talk
[31:59] Speaker 1: a little bit about Lee Tracy here. Tracy had a
[32:03] Speaker 1: fascinating career, beginning on Broadway and then coming into film
[32:09] Speaker 1: during the pre code era. Probably the greatest recognition of
[32:15] Speaker 1: his career would come in nineteen sixty five when he
[32:20] Speaker 1: was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor
[32:26] Speaker 1: for his performance in The Best Man. He also would
[32:31] Speaker 1: become a radio private eye, although we don't have much
[32:35] Speaker 1: record of it, as he was actually the last actor
[32:40] Speaker 1: to play Martin Kin on the radio. He also did
[32:44] Speaker 1: play him on television, of course, in the fourth season
[32:48] Speaker 1: of that series, and you can find a few episodes
[32:51] Speaker 1: with Lee Tracy available, but sadly, as is the case
[32:55] Speaker 1: with the rest of the Martin Kain Radio cannon, none
[32:59] Speaker 1: of the radio episode survive. Now it's time to thank
[33:03] Speaker 1: our Patreon supporter of the day. I want to go
[33:06] Speaker 1: ahead and think Bruce, Patreon supporter since March of twenty
