[1:52] Speaker 4: See he's getting up.
[1:54] Speaker 6: Now stop that man, stop him.
[1:56] Speaker 5: Get killed my best friend. That man wanted for murder.
[1:59] Speaker 5: That's him.
[2:06] Speaker 2: The Big Story here is America. It's sound and its fury,
[2:11] Speaker 2: its joy and its sorrow, as faithfully reported by the
[2:15] Speaker 2: men and women of the Great American newspapers, Richmond, Virginia.
[2:22] Speaker 2: The story of a murder and of a man convicted
[2:25] Speaker 2: for that murder, who became the bitterest man on earth,
[2:29] Speaker 2: for his contribution not only in writing a great story,
[2:33] Speaker 2: but in reaffirming a great truth, that every person on
[2:36] Speaker 2: earth is a human being and has a right to
[2:38] Speaker 2: human dignity to report a Julian C. Housman of the Richmond,
[2:42] Speaker 2: Virginia Newsleader, for his big story goes the Pellmell Award.
[2:56] Speaker 2: Now the story as it actually happened. Reporter Julian Husband's
[3:01] Speaker 2: story as he lived it, Richmond, Virginia.
[3:14] Speaker 7: It began with a letter from a woman in Harlem
[3:17] Speaker 7: at twenty five eighty one, Saint Nicholas Avenue, New York
[3:21] Speaker 7: to the postmaster at Brodnack's in Mecklenburg County, Virginia.
[3:27] Speaker 8: Dear mister Dawson, Sir, I got to make myself known
[3:30] Speaker 8: to you, and maybe you remember me Daniel Greene's daughter,
[3:34] Speaker 8: Mamie now name of Goodwin. Since I'm married, I hope
[3:38] Speaker 8: you'll not think me beIN forward to write, sir, mister Dawson.
[3:42] Speaker 8: But my son Jamie got himself in trouble. He's in Richmond,
[3:46] Speaker 8: in the Henricot County Jail accused of murder and sent
[3:50] Speaker 8: us to forty year hard labor. Now the man who
[3:53] Speaker 8: did that crime is name Author Tenney, and some swear
[3:56] Speaker 8: as my Jamie is at Author Tenney, which he is
[3:59] Speaker 8: not here is my son and never might have know one. Now,
[4:04] Speaker 8: mister Dawson, you know my family when I wait for
[4:07] Speaker 8: your wife twenty years ago and then moved from broad
[4:10] Speaker 8: Axe to New York and Jamie come with me. He
[4:13] Speaker 8: never killed no one, But I can't come and prove it.
[4:17] Speaker 9: So would you please I.
[4:18] Speaker 8: Get in touch with the sheriff, mister Rae and tell
[4:21] Speaker 8: them that Jamie ain't this Author Tenney and help him
[4:25] Speaker 8: get off. I'd be so grateful, mister Dawson, sir, and
[4:28] Speaker 8: thank you in advance your humble servants.
[4:31] Speaker 9: Maymick Grain goodn.
[4:42] Speaker 4: It began for you.
[4:44] Speaker 7: Julian Housmann, reporter for the Richmond knows lad when Postmaster
[4:49] Speaker 7: Dawson of Broadnax happened to have some business in Richmond,
[4:54] Speaker 7: happened to have a spare half hour, and happened by
[4:58] Speaker 7: accident to walk into the newspaper office.
[5:01] Speaker 10: Mister Housman, Yeah, that's right. Her name's Dawson, Postmash and
[5:06] Speaker 10: broad Knights. I got something here might be of interest.
[5:09] Speaker 10: The girl outside it says that you handle this kind
[5:12] Speaker 10: of thing.
[5:13] Speaker 9: What is the crime story? I don't know.
[5:15] Speaker 10: Is it any kind of story? Just the letter I
[5:17] Speaker 10: got old woman he used to know twenty odd years
[5:20] Speaker 10: ago up Mecklenburg County where Broaden Axes I used to
[5:24] Speaker 10: do washing for my wife.
[5:25] Speaker 9: Well, I'm on a story right now, mister Dorston.
[5:28] Speaker 10: That's all right, It won't take your time. Just why
[5:30] Speaker 10: don't I leave the letter? You think it's anything where,
[5:33] Speaker 10: go ahead and do what you like. If not, it
[5:36] Speaker 10: gets the wastebaskets, go to place as any place.
[5:39] Speaker 7: Three hours later, after you've finished work, you read the letter.
[5:46] Speaker 7: It moves you strongly. The woman's plight, her dependence on Dawson,
[5:51] Speaker 7: the helplessness, and every line. Could it be as she
[5:55] Speaker 7: had written? You call Sheriff Jeff Ray a good friend
[6:00] Speaker 7: out at Henrico Cardy prison.
[6:02] Speaker 11: Then there's nothing in it Jeff about his being Goodwin
[6:04] Speaker 11: and not Tenny, No nothing.
[6:06] Speaker 12: I had that boy in jail one day six years ago,
[6:08] Speaker 12: right after killed his wife.
[6:10] Speaker 9: He escaped that first day, but I remember him couldn't
[6:12] Speaker 9: you compare his prince?
[6:15] Speaker 12: Now, I tell you a little secret, Julian, I never
[6:17] Speaker 12: did get a chance to take his prince. I was
[6:20] Speaker 12: going to do that second morning. But if he didn't
[6:22] Speaker 12: escape that night, we got him. Now, had a fair trial,
[6:26] Speaker 12: got convicted. And that's that. Ah, Julian, he ain't pulling
[6:30] Speaker 12: the wool over your eyes now, is he with that
[6:32] Speaker 12: story of being someone else?
[6:34] Speaker 4: Oh, Julian, you hear me.
[6:37] Speaker 9: Yeah, I hear you. Jeff No, he isn't. That's so long.
[6:41] Speaker 3: Oh that's right, mister houseman. My name is Jamie Goodwin.
[7:00] Speaker 3: But what's the difference. Ain't nobody gonna believe me? Ain't
[7:03] Speaker 3: nobody care? But what proof do you have proof? What's
[7:07] Speaker 3: that proof? I say, who I am? I got papers
[7:11] Speaker 3: from the Merchant Marine. Duriy say, that's off a tenny,
[7:14] Speaker 3: forty years hard labor.
[7:16] Speaker 9: That's your proof. And you're not off a tenny. You're
[7:18] Speaker 9: Jamie Goodwin.
[7:19] Speaker 3: Mister he's gone away. Who cares if a backwards boy
[7:23] Speaker 3: like me live or die?
[7:25] Speaker 4: Going away and leave me be.
[7:36] Speaker 7: For a moment, do you think, oh, what's the difference?
[7:40] Speaker 7: And then you stop? He's a man, his name, a
[7:44] Speaker 7: human being, with the same hopes and desires and fears
[7:47] Speaker 7: as you or anyone else. Do you think suppose I
[7:52] Speaker 7: spend a little time on this find out. He starts
[7:56] Speaker 7: with Bertha Javis, the girl who identified him.
[7:59] Speaker 9: I was up there New York visiting friends.
[8:02] Speaker 6: We went dan Soon That's where I saw him.
[8:04] Speaker 9: Tenny, You're sure it was Tenny?
[8:06] Speaker 6: Sure, I'm sure.
[8:07] Speaker 9: How do you know?
[8:08] Speaker 13: His wife was my girlfriend?
[8:10] Speaker 6: I grew up with her, my best friend. He promised
[8:13] Speaker 6: to love honor and Cherisher Steady killed her. She was
[8:17] Speaker 6: a good girl, Marie, and he's bad.
[8:20] Speaker 4: How I know? Well, Marie's dead.
[8:23] Speaker 6: That's how I know.
[8:31] Speaker 9: You are Marie's mother.
[8:32] Speaker 4: Who are you?
[8:33] Speaker 9: I'm a reporter. Nny was your son in law?
[8:36] Speaker 8: Right, I've got nothing to say about him except they
[8:39] Speaker 8: should electrocuted him.
[8:40] Speaker 9: Not to give him forty years. You identified him at
[8:43] Speaker 9: the trial, sure, saying his.
[8:44] Speaker 14: Name is Goodwin.
[8:46] Speaker 13: I ain't Kenny.
[8:47] Speaker 4: I Goodwin?
[8:48] Speaker 9: Liar? Know what a liar that boy was? Come in?
[8:51] Speaker 8: Look what's that bible? Look her here rode on the inside.
[8:56] Speaker 8: Turned my darling sweetheart, Marie. Give it it's Tuo same
[9:00] Speaker 8: day killed her. That's how bad he was.
[9:03] Speaker 9: Sure there couldn't be any mistake.
[9:04] Speaker 8: I swore in the courtroom, and I'll putting my hand
[9:06] Speaker 8: on this book.
[9:07] Speaker 9: Now, God's my witness.
[9:08] Speaker 8: That boy in jail kill my daughter.
[9:10] Speaker 14: God's my witness.
[9:18] Speaker 7: You wonder about him, now, Jamie Goodwin or off At Tenny,
[9:24] Speaker 7: You wonder that to go on? Other witnesses say the same.
[9:29] Speaker 7: And then after searching a week, you find the Tenny family.
[9:33] Speaker 7: A woman second bed who can't talk, and a bent
[9:37] Speaker 7: old man who listens to your mission and shakes his head.
[9:41] Speaker 15: He's my son. But don't talk about him.
[9:44] Speaker 11: But you weren't at the trial, Well you, mister Tenny,
[9:46] Speaker 11: you didn't see him what I wanna see.
[9:49] Speaker 15: Boy disgrace his family, mister, since he'd done that six
[9:53] Speaker 15: years ago, his mama and me ain't been out of
[9:56] Speaker 15: this house living disgrace, that's all. Don't want to talk
[10:00] Speaker 15: about him.
[10:01] Speaker 9: But this man may not be your son. Killed his wife,
[10:05] Speaker 9: that's all I know. Maybe he didn't do it.
[10:07] Speaker 11: I don't say your son didn't kill his wife. I
[10:09] Speaker 11: say maybe this man isn't your son.
[10:12] Speaker 9: What you want me to do, come down to the
[10:14] Speaker 9: jail see him.
[10:15] Speaker 11: You may be able to set an innocent man free.
[10:18] Speaker 11: You wouldn't want an innocent man to pay for your
[10:20] Speaker 11: son's crime, would you.
[10:21] Speaker 15: Well enough trouble in the world at out some poor
[10:25] Speaker 15: boy pend for something my son done. I'll go.
[10:40] Speaker 11: You know this man Jamie, No, sir, never seen him
[10:44] Speaker 11: before in my life. Well, mister Tanney, mister Tenney, this
[10:47] Speaker 11: is Arthur Tenny's father.
[10:48] Speaker 15: Well it looked like him, talk like him, even stand
[10:54] Speaker 15: like Arthur. Look enough to be him. Eltis twin. He
[11:00] Speaker 15: ain't my son, He's somebody else.
[11:13] Speaker 7: Read all about it men sentencing and Rico County Jail
[11:16] Speaker 7: for murderers.
[11:16] Speaker 14: Arthur Tenny says, that's not his name.
[11:18] Speaker 7: Read all about it is shut down the facts as
[11:21] Speaker 7: you've got them, the assertions and other niles. And the
[11:25] Speaker 7: next morning you get a call the Commonwealth's Attorney, George Dallas,
[11:31] Speaker 7: the man who tried the case, tells you to come in,
[11:35] Speaker 7: tells you you'd better come in.
[11:37] Speaker 13: That's a great story, you wrote, great public service.
[11:40] Speaker 14: What's the matter, mister Ballas you think I try cases
[11:43] Speaker 14: and send men to prison for forty years for the
[11:45] Speaker 14: fun of it, I don't, But I wrote that. I
[11:47] Speaker 14: suppose you listen, houseman and I talk eight witnesses and
[11:52] Speaker 14: the sheriff of this county identified this man as Tenny.
[11:55] Speaker 14: One witness, the man's father, and of course the man
[11:57] Speaker 14: himself say he's not Tenny. Now, I ask yourself this,
[12:01] Speaker 14: Does the Tenny family stand again by lying? Does Tenny
[12:04] Speaker 14: stand again by sticking to his story that he's Goodwin?
[12:07] Speaker 14: Of course?
[12:08] Speaker 9: But I saw them together, Tenny's father, and.
[12:10] Speaker 14: I saw Bertha Jarvis and the murdered girl's mother and
[12:13] Speaker 14: all the rest. I suppose you were accused of being
[12:16] Speaker 14: someone you're not. Could you prove who you were? Would
[12:19] Speaker 14: it be so difficult?
[12:20] Speaker 9: And what about the papers from the Merchant Marine.
[12:22] Speaker 14: Look I walk into a shipping office in New York
[12:25] Speaker 14: and say my name is Goodwin. Do they ask for proof? No,
[12:29] Speaker 14: they issue papers in the name of Goodwin. Does that
[12:32] Speaker 14: make me Goodwin?
[12:33] Speaker 9: No? No? I see all that. But there are no butts.
[12:36] Speaker 14: No, if Sir Anne's are butts. That boy raised the
[12:40] Speaker 14: noise that he was Goodwin.
[12:41] Speaker 9: In court we proved who he was.
[12:45] Speaker 14: Now, if he hadn't raised that doubt that he was
[12:46] Speaker 14: someone else, he'd have been sentenced to death, not forty years,
[12:50] Speaker 14: instead of an innocent man being unjustly jailed. I tell
[12:53] Speaker 14: you a guilty man has gotten off easy.
[12:55] Speaker 9: You think that I know it?
[12:57] Speaker 14: Now, Why don't you go back to your paper and
[12:59] Speaker 14: write the second part of that story that Tenny is
[13:02] Speaker 14: Kenny No ifs and buts.
[13:05] Speaker 9: No.
[13:06] Speaker 11: I can't do that, mister Bout. I can't because after
[13:10] Speaker 11: all you've said, and all the other witnesses have said, I.
[13:12] Speaker 9: Think I'm right. I think I can prove that Jamie
[13:15] Speaker 9: Goodwin is not the murderer.
[13:40] Speaker 16: This is Si Harris returning you to your narrator and
[13:43] Speaker 16: the big story of Julian Houseman as he lived it
[13:47] Speaker 16: and brought it.
[13:49] Speaker 7: The fact seem all against you, Julian Housman, reporter for
[13:53] Speaker 7: the Richmond Newsleader. Witnesses swear that the man who says
[13:57] Speaker 7: he's Jamie Goodwin is really off Tenny murderer. The sheriff
[14:03] Speaker 7: says so, Commonwealth's attorney Ballast insists so. And all you
[14:08] Speaker 7: have to go on is the word of the man himself,
[14:12] Speaker 7: the murderer's father, and your own stubborn belief. You go
[14:17] Speaker 7: back to Henrik Cardie jail, to the innocent man or
[14:21] Speaker 7: the murderer.
[14:22] Speaker 9: And talk Jamie. I need to know more. I've got
[14:25] Speaker 9: to know more about you now, you've got to talk
[14:27] Speaker 9: to me. What for, mister horsman, don't sit there like
[14:29] Speaker 9: that so we can free you. Don't you want to
[14:31] Speaker 9: get out of prison?
[14:32] Speaker 3: Don't I want to get out? Don't I want to Breathe? Look, mister,
[14:37] Speaker 3: you've been good, real good, taking time, but nobody cares.
[14:40] Speaker 3: What happens to me? That old man say I wasn't
[14:43] Speaker 3: his son? Anybody listen to him? The sheriff listen, mister Ballace,
[14:47] Speaker 3: he listened.
[14:48] Speaker 11: No, Oh, what's a good I tell you, if we
[14:51] Speaker 11: can get profe, you can be free.
[14:54] Speaker 3: They put me away. They treat me good in here,
[14:56] Speaker 3: and I ain't complaining. Food's good and all like it.
[15:00] Speaker 3: But they put me away and they ain't gonna bother
[15:01] Speaker 3: take me out.
[15:02] Speaker 9: I tell you you're wrong. Ballas is an honest man.
[15:05] Speaker 3: I ain't say he's not honest.
[15:06] Speaker 17: I oh, mister, look, I want to get out, getting
[15:12] Speaker 17: the sun, get on a ship, maybe see a girl,
[15:15] Speaker 17: get married, have kids.
[15:17] Speaker 4: Sure, sure I.
[15:18] Speaker 3: Want that, But I ain't gonna let you come in
[15:21] Speaker 3: here and stuff my hopes and made me get me
[15:22] Speaker 3: to think that that's what I'm gonna have. I ain't
[15:25] Speaker 3: gonna let you do that. I'm gonna run in here.
[15:27] Speaker 3: It ain't nothing you know, nobody in the whole world can
[15:30] Speaker 3: do to help me. That's why I say leave me alone. Please,
[15:33] Speaker 3: I'm begging you. Leave me alone, mess me up, and
[15:38] Speaker 3: then dash me down more hard than before.
[15:42] Speaker 9: You're wrong, Jenny, You're wrong? How can I make you
[15:45] Speaker 9: believe you're wrong? Jamie?
[15:48] Speaker 11: I'm gonna write a story about what you just told me.
[15:50] Speaker 11: Maybe somebody will read it and come forward and say
[15:52] Speaker 11: who you really are? What else should I say in
[15:55] Speaker 11: that story?
[15:55] Speaker 4: I told you all?
[15:56] Speaker 3: I'm gonna say you.
[15:57] Speaker 9: Asked who cares?
[15:58] Speaker 11: I care, Jamie, and I think others will care when
[16:00] Speaker 11: they hear your story.
[16:03] Speaker 9: The truth, honest, the true Jamie.
[16:08] Speaker 3: All right, say this, Jamie Goodwin's got a bad name,
[16:14] Speaker 3: Jamie Goodwin Robert Carr and stole money for food. But
[16:18] Speaker 3: he didn't kill no woman.
[16:19] Speaker 4: He didn't kill no wife. He never was married. Say that.
[16:23] Speaker 3: Say if he got married, he treated this woman right.
[16:26] Speaker 3: You ain't gonna help maybe, but.
[16:28] Speaker 4: That's the truth.
[16:29] Speaker 9: Anything else, Yeah, yeah, you know, mister Haan.
[16:34] Speaker 3: Say that. Say Jamie Goodman worked lots of places Broad
[16:37] Speaker 3: n Next, Detroit, Baltimore, Boston. There must be some folks
[16:42] Speaker 3: knowing must be one man somewhere stop what he do
[16:45] Speaker 3: and take a day out and come down here to
[16:46] Speaker 3: prove I ain't no murderer. Prove I just claimed, Jamie Goodwin.
[17:00] Speaker 14: Reg your story. Mister tim thought. Maybe I knew that
[17:03] Speaker 14: man you wrote about two years ago. Let him seventy
[17:05] Speaker 14: five dollars he paid me back to here's the newdy sign. Heee,
[17:10] Speaker 14: Jamie Goodwin, maybe you can use it.
[17:19] Speaker 15: I just come from the jail, mister haslan Well. I
[17:21] Speaker 15: saw that man. The man they says author Tenny Funny.
[17:25] Speaker 15: I remember when I talked to Tenny, knew him years ago.
[17:29] Speaker 15: He used to have to look up to that man tall.
[17:32] Speaker 15: This one I didn't have to look up to. Now
[17:34] Speaker 15: he must have got shorter, because I ain't got no
[17:37] Speaker 15: taller less, of course, like I think, he ain't author Tenny,
[17:42] Speaker 15: but someone else.
[17:50] Speaker 9: You're a houseman, that's right.
[17:53] Speaker 4: My name C. B. Sega. I'm a planter broad next way.
[17:56] Speaker 4: You had not in the paper. I read it.
[17:58] Speaker 12: I spoke the postmaster in our town about this good Win.
[18:01] Speaker 12: Tenny Feller says, come see you say here I am.
[18:04] Speaker 9: What do you think about it?
[18:06] Speaker 12: Thinking something? I don't go in for much here is.
[18:09] Speaker 12: I'll tell you what I believe in. I believe in facts.
[18:12] Speaker 12: I live in broad Next all my life. Know everyone
[18:15] Speaker 12: man worked for me. Name a Goodwin years back. Maybe
[18:18] Speaker 12: that's the boy you've got in jail here. If it is,
[18:21] Speaker 12: i'll prove it. I'll ask that boy six questions about Broadnecks.
[18:25] Speaker 12: He answers him he's a Goodwin. He don't let him
[18:28] Speaker 12: stay in jail. I ain't got all day.
[18:30] Speaker 4: Let's go.
[18:46] Speaker 9: I stand still, you man, what's this?
[18:48] Speaker 4: What you got all these men here for?
[18:50] Speaker 9: Can you pick out one you ever saw before? Mister
[18:53] Speaker 9: Sega testing me?
[18:54] Speaker 4: Eh? Well, I'll be sure there he is. You're Goodwin? Right, yes?
[19:03] Speaker 4: Chasing me? All right?
[19:04] Speaker 11: The rest of you, man can go, Jamie, this man
[19:09] Speaker 11: is Let me do the talking, son, Okay, I look
[19:12] Speaker 11: at me, Jamie.
[19:13] Speaker 4: Where am i?
[19:15] Speaker 3: I remember? You say you mister sake?
[19:19] Speaker 4: That's right now? Where am I from? By broad Next?
[19:22] Speaker 4: When did you last see me?
[19:24] Speaker 9: Let me see seven years ago?
[19:27] Speaker 4: So last July?
[19:28] Speaker 14: Why did you say July when.
[19:32] Speaker 3: You fired me July the first and then you hired
[19:35] Speaker 3: me back July to fourth?
[19:36] Speaker 4: He says he was being patriotic about how I never mind?
[19:39] Speaker 4: What's my brother in law's name.
[19:43] Speaker 9: What is the doctor, doctor Payne?
[19:46] Speaker 4: What did he tell you last time he saw you?
[19:49] Speaker 4: He said, I think it was the last time.
[19:51] Speaker 3: He says, don't you go walking on no more rules,
[19:54] Speaker 3: because next time you fall off, you and I might
[19:56] Speaker 3: not be lucky and.
[19:57] Speaker 4: Just break one lead.
[19:58] Speaker 12: That's him, that's him, that's Jamie with no furious facts.
[20:01] Speaker 12: I swear for heck, I don't need to swear now, Jamie.
[20:06] Speaker 12: When he let you out, you come on back to
[20:09] Speaker 12: broad next. I got a good job with him.
[20:20] Speaker 7: But it's not so simple. There are eight witnesses and
[20:24] Speaker 7: a sheriff to shake. There's a decision of a judge
[20:27] Speaker 7: and a jury the reverse, and there's an attorney Ballast,
[20:31] Speaker 7: the commonwealth attorney. You bring the new information to him.
[20:36] Speaker 7: He looks it over lessons, then says, I take back
[20:40] Speaker 7: some of what I said. Housman, your story was not irresponsible.
[20:44] Speaker 9: Thank you.
[20:45] Speaker 14: I take back some of what I said. There's still
[20:48] Speaker 14: the testimony of eight enough. But you think, nevertheless, that
[20:52] Speaker 14: this information warrants a new trial.
[20:54] Speaker 9: Yes, mister Ballas I do. What do you think, husband?
[20:58] Speaker 9: I want you to know I'll fight you.
[21:00] Speaker 14: I mean you and Tenny or a Goodwin and his attorney.
[21:03] Speaker 14: I'll fight you with all I've got. You know I'm
[21:06] Speaker 14: a funny duck. I'm one of those throwbacks to another
[21:08] Speaker 14: period when people had a sense of duty and a
[21:10] Speaker 14: sense of honesty. If you win this case, you'll know
[21:14] Speaker 14: you've been in a fight.
[21:16] Speaker 13: You'll get a new trial, as the lord's my witness.
[21:28] Speaker 4: Jedge.
[21:28] Speaker 6: That man sitting right over there was married to my
[21:31] Speaker 6: girlfriend Marie.
[21:33] Speaker 13: That man is author Tenny. I swear he killed my daughter.
[21:46] Speaker 9: That Tenny, I swear he don't decide to live.
[21:56] Speaker 15: Yes, So mister lawyer us respects what that foreman said
[22:00] Speaker 15: about Marie, and I ain't forgetting Marie was my daughter
[22:04] Speaker 15: in law. But that man sitting down ain't my son.
[22:08] Speaker 15: He looked like him, all right, but he ain't my boy.
[22:18] Speaker 12: My name is Sega, I say, any man answer my
[22:20] Speaker 12: six questions? Way that boy done? I know he's who
[22:23] Speaker 12: I say is? He's Jamie Goodwin.
[22:37] Speaker 8: I'm the boy's mother, Sir, Yes, sir, No matter what
[22:41] Speaker 8: I say, I know few people ain't gonna think I
[22:43] Speaker 8: ain't sticking up for my son.
[22:46] Speaker 4: I am. But I said this.
[22:48] Speaker 8: How come that poor woman understand whose daughter got killed?
[22:51] Speaker 4: N't know me.
[22:52] Speaker 8: How come the man who say he's author to his
[22:54] Speaker 8: father never seen me before? If I'm the mother of
[22:57] Speaker 8: this man, then there's my kinfold. And how come my
[23:01] Speaker 8: kinfolks don't know me? Reason Neils, he's Jamie Goodman.
[23:05] Speaker 9: That's why I am a handwriting expert.
[23:20] Speaker 10: I've testified in many trials in professional capacity, including the
[23:23] Speaker 10: Lindbergh case. I have also examined a sheet of paper
[23:26] Speaker 10: torn from a Bible on which Arthur Tenny wrote a
[23:28] Speaker 10: few words. I have also examined a note admittedly signed
[23:32] Speaker 10: by Jamie Goodwin. In my honest and positive opinion, the
[23:36] Speaker 10: possibility of Tenny writing like Goodwin or Goodwin writing like
[23:40] Speaker 10: Tenny is so highly unlikely that it becomes almost a
[23:43] Speaker 10: practical certainty that they are very different people. In short,
[23:47] Speaker 10: that's Goodwin your honor, not Tenny.
[24:01] Speaker 4: Jamie Goodwin.
[24:03] Speaker 9: Yes, so your honor.
[24:04] Speaker 15: He's dismissed.
[24:06] Speaker 9: Sir, You're a free Jamie.
[24:07] Speaker 7: You're afraid, Please, mister Housman, a little respect for the
[24:11] Speaker 7: dignity of this court.
[24:13] Speaker 16: Jamie Goodwin, you are free.
[24:36] Speaker 9: I don't know what the same as to help you
[24:38] Speaker 9: don't have to say anything.
[24:39] Speaker 4: I got it somehow. I gotta thank you. You see,
[24:43] Speaker 4: I learned that people don't care.
[24:47] Speaker 3: People like you and the postmaster from broad MAXI mister Sega,
[24:51] Speaker 3: here's mister Ballast too.
[24:52] Speaker 9: Then folks on the other side they care too. What's true,
[24:57] Speaker 9: countful folks don't. That's right.
[24:59] Speaker 18: It seem the something something else too, I mean something.
[25:04] Speaker 18: If you believe in something, you don't put your head
[25:07] Speaker 18: down and say no, they can't be you. Put your
[25:10] Speaker 18: face up and fight for what you believe. If you
[25:14] Speaker 18: do that, people cared because they see that you kids.
[25:17] Speaker 18: And that's what this show, now it was.
[25:20] Speaker 9: That's what it shows, Jamie. That's just what it shows.
[25:40] Speaker 2: In just a moment, we'll read you a telegram from
[25:42] Speaker 2: Julian Sea Houseman of the Richmond, Virginia Newsleader, with a
[25:45] Speaker 2: final outcome of tonight's big story. Now we read you
[25:54] Speaker 2: that telegram from Julian Cea Housman of the Richmond Virginia Newsleader.
[25:59] Speaker 11: Day after try Goodwin visited the paper and said, I
[26:02] Speaker 11: just wanted to come to the people who got me
[26:03] Speaker 11: out of this. Jam I needed assistant sentence to the
[26:06] Speaker 11: Newsleader that I owe my freedom. Authorities are still searching
[26:09] Speaker 11: for the actual murderer in Tonight's Big Story. Thanks a
[26:13] Speaker 11: lot for Tonight's Pellmell Award.
[26:14] Speaker 4: Thank you, mister Hosman.
[26:16] Speaker 2: The makers of pell Mell Famous Cigarettes are proud to
[26:18] Speaker 2: present you the pell Mell five hundred dollars Award for
[26:21] Speaker 2: notable service in the field of Journalism.
[26:23] Speaker 16: Listen again next week, same time, same station, when pell
[26:27] Speaker 16: Mell Famous Cigarettes will present another Big Story. A big
[26:32] Speaker 16: story from the front pages of the Columbus, Ohio Dispatch
[26:35] Speaker 16: Byeline bill Foley, A big story about a phantom killer
[26:41] Speaker 16: and a reporter who didn't believe in ghosts.
[26:57] Speaker 2: The Big Story is produced by Bernard Parcter with music
[27:00] Speaker 2: by Vladimtslinski. Tonight's program was written by Arnold Pearl. Your
[27:05] Speaker 2: narrator was Bob Sloan. John Sylvester played the part of
[27:08] Speaker 2: Julian C. Hausman, and Canada Lee played Jamie. In order
[27:13] Speaker 2: to protect the names of people actually involved in Tonight's
[27:16] Speaker 2: authentic Big Story, the names of all characters in the
[27:19] Speaker 2: dramatization were changed, with exception of the report of mister Housman.
[27:29] Speaker 2: This is Ernest Chappel speaking for the makers of pell Mell.
[27:39] Speaker 9: This is NBC the Nation, a broadcasting company.
[27:49] Speaker 1: Welcome Back. In addition to mister Sylvester and mister lay in,
[27:55] Speaker 1: tonight's cast were Pauline Myers, Georgia Bury, John Marriott, Jim Bules,
[28:03] Speaker 1: Eric Dressler, Bill Smith, Scott Tennyson, and as usual, a
[28:09] Speaker 1: lot of doubles, including Canada Lee. Now on the Big Story.
[28:14] Speaker 1: It is a bit unusual for any co stars to
[28:18] Speaker 1: make it into the closing credits, but Canada ly had
[28:22] Speaker 1: a very significant profile that merited it. Lee kind of
[28:28] Speaker 1: stumbled into acting, I mean literally was looking for a
[28:32] Speaker 1: job as a laborer and ended up in an audition
[28:37] Speaker 1: for the Federal Theater, which was one of those sort
[28:41] Speaker 1: of new deal projects that kept people in work by
[28:45] Speaker 1: having them performed. According to Lee, the way he looked
[28:50] Speaker 1: at acting was this is interesting, and it's better than
[28:53] Speaker 1: going hungry. Then he got into a production of McBeth,
[29:00] Speaker 1: which we termine all black production, and Wells had them
[29:06] Speaker 1: rehearsed for six months and this just became a runaway hit.
[29:12] Speaker 1: And it really is a case where Wells's passion for
[29:18] Speaker 1: the theater and acting were caught by Lee, which I
[29:22] Speaker 1: think is one of the more incredible things that I've
[29:26] Speaker 1: ever read about mister Wells. Lee went on to do
[29:30] Speaker 1: a lot of stage work and in Hollywood he was
[29:34] Speaker 1: asked in Lifeboat, and he'd also served as an narrator
[29:40] Speaker 1: of the really interesting World War two era program New
[29:45] Speaker 1: World A Coming, So he brought some real star power
[29:49] Speaker 1: that you don't really hear a whole lot in the
[29:52] Speaker 1: big story. In terms of the episode itself, I think
[29:55] Speaker 1: it was well set out, and according to doctor Joe Webb,
[30:01] Speaker 1: it's pretty close to the truth. The murder in question
[30:07] Speaker 1: happened in nineteen thirty two, with the new trial occurring
[30:12] Speaker 1: in nineteen thirty eight. I do think that, as was
[30:17] Speaker 1: the case with other episodes in this sort of mold,
[30:22] Speaker 1: that there may be a little bit too much credit
[30:26] Speaker 1: being given to the prosecutors, who and I think in
[30:31] Speaker 1: real life, continued through a lot of evidence coming forward,
[30:36] Speaker 1: a lot of people saying this wasn't the same guy
[30:39] Speaker 1: until they were really Finally, I think by the way
[30:44] Speaker 1: of public relations and potential, he forced to go ahead
[30:49] Speaker 1: and have a new trial. Now that is not to
[30:53] Speaker 1: say in anyway that prosecutors or most prosecutors aren't concerned
[31:00] Speaker 1: enough with justice to try to do the right thing.
[31:03] Speaker 1: It's just kind of hard to see that this was
[31:06] Speaker 1: the case here all right. Listener comments and feedback now
[31:10] Speaker 1: and overall on Spotify Mechanics sixty six rights regarding the
[31:14] Speaker 1: episode's sixteen year old misfit kills out of Fear good one.
[31:19] Speaker 3: Well, thanks so much.

[32:01] Speaker 19: The shock was a thing composed of crowd and a
[32:04] Speaker 19: nighttime sky lit by flame, the elements later to be
[32:07] Speaker 19: noted in police and fire department records. Fire at Russell's
[32:10] Speaker 19: Chemical Company time four fifteen am.
[32:13] Speaker 4: You're bringing somebody out now down.
[32:15] Speaker 19: Strange What what'd you say? Said a strange mug of
[32:18] Speaker 19: m after four in the morning. Why should anybody be come,
[32:21] Speaker 19: Let's see put the stretches down here.
[32:25] Speaker 9: Somebody better are they?
[32:27] Speaker 13: Oh?
[32:27] Speaker 3: Hello, Danny, he's too. I think that's always in there.
[32:30] Speaker 3: I just started to say, somebody better get a preach.
[32:32] Speaker 4: They both said, this one is the other one.
[32:34] Speaker 9: Anny, look at him, Ed Custer, do something for him.
[32:39] Speaker 19: Don't knock Doc overhead, Ed Custer, hurry up, Doc, you
[32:43] Speaker 19: know I'm Danny.
[32:44] Speaker 9: Yeah, he's a policeman.
[32:45] Speaker 4: Policeman, what was he doing in there?
[32:47] Speaker 9: Got do something for him.
