[3:18] Speaker 4: Yes, go on, Hello, Sammy, who are you talking to? Oh?
[3:23] Speaker 6: Well, I was just calling you at the theater, you know,
[3:25] Speaker 6: I was with the cops. Hang it up, all right, Hello,
[3:29] Speaker 6: I'm sorry I bothered you.
[3:31] Speaker 5: Sammy just got back.
[3:34] Speaker 4: Hello.
[3:35] Speaker 5: Hello, your party has hung up, sir, so they have.
[3:39] Speaker 4: Thank you, Shirley Gray. Shirley Gray, Oh of course.
[3:49] Speaker 7: Dude, dude, I'm a side lieutenant.
[3:53] Speaker 4: Schwartz.
[3:54] Speaker 7: Guess who Oh no, Templar, No, no, no.
[4:00] Speaker 3: No, no.
[4:01] Speaker 4: You hate me, don't.
[4:02] Speaker 5: You, Templar.
[4:03] Speaker 7: This is a homicide bureau. I am up to the
[4:06] Speaker 7: cleft of my rugged chin and work. I got maniacs
[4:09] Speaker 7: confessing to murders that never happened. I got murderers caught
[4:12] Speaker 7: in the act. Who say who?
[4:14] Speaker 4: Me?
[4:14] Speaker 8: And no?
[4:15] Speaker 4: No?
[4:16] Speaker 9: I got Temblar. Yes, Lieutenant, Templar, you got something to say?
[4:21] Speaker 9: Say it anyone for Badminton Tamplar. Okay, Lieutenant, I just
[4:25] Speaker 9: want some information.
[4:26] Speaker 7: Read the newspaper's, Templar. They whip up the crime waves.
[4:29] Speaker 8: I don't.
[4:29] Speaker 4: Well, then, what do journalism's juvenile delinquents have to say
[4:33] Speaker 4: about events in the city of Littleton today?
[4:35] Speaker 7: You don't know.
[4:36] Speaker 4: I couldn't even get well. Stay happy, go back to bed, Lieutenant.
[4:39] Speaker 4: I'll write a letter to the times.
[4:41] Speaker 7: Okay, Templar, have it your way. You ever hear of
[4:43] Speaker 7: a band leader named Terry Richard?
[4:45] Speaker 4: Of course, you mean the one they call the real
[4:48] Speaker 4: gone guy.
[4:48] Speaker 7: I hope to hold your half noe, Templar. He's real gone,
[4:51] Speaker 7: all right, so gone he's dead. He was strangled.
[4:53] Speaker 4: Oh well, thank you, lieutenant, for your first exclusive.
[4:57] Speaker 7: Look, if you're a figure in a bud in Templar,
[4:58] Speaker 7: I wouldn't now you know you remember Lieutenant Ruggles, old.
[5:02] Speaker 8: Old meat head.
[5:04] Speaker 7: Well he is now chief of police at Littleton. You'd
[5:06] Speaker 7: better stay out of his way.
[5:07] Speaker 4: I wouldn't dream of getting in his way, or would I?
[5:10] Speaker 7: I am not kidding, Templar. Terry Richards was a real
[5:12] Speaker 7: big name. Ruggles wants this one for himself. You get
[5:15] Speaker 7: in his way, you'll have you so deep in the
[5:16] Speaker 7: pokey they'll be feeding.
[5:17] Speaker 5: You with a pea shooter.
[5:18] Speaker 7: Rep Hey, on second thought, is that.
[5:21] Speaker 4: Bad, Lieutenant? Yeah, Tampler, did someone spike your bubblegum this morning? Yes? Camp, goodbye, pal,
[5:28] Speaker 4: don't sneeze into the breeze. I'd like to go backstage, please,
[5:45] Speaker 4: mister Dorman.
[5:47] Speaker 10: It's possible to get there if your cult will development
[5:50] Speaker 10: is at a certain level.
[5:51] Speaker 4: Well, I'm fond of Montreal.
[5:53] Speaker 10: I collect Americana. I am fond of portraits of those
[5:56] Speaker 10: men who will become our president. I am especially cheered
[6:00] Speaker 10: by portraits of Lincoln are done, of course, on fine paper,
[6:03] Speaker 10: in black, bordered and shaded in hues and shades of green,
[6:07] Speaker 10: which one finds so cool and comforting.
[6:09] Speaker 4: Your taste is admirable. It happens that I here you
[6:13] Speaker 4: are a perfect specimen a pass fraind Thank you so much. Oh,
[6:17] Speaker 4: mister Templar, you know me. You expected me. Miss Gray
[6:20] Speaker 4: hoped for you as she described you. Still it cost
[6:22] Speaker 4: me five dollars.
[6:23] Speaker 10: Nothing ventured, nothing gained, and miss Gray is in her
[6:26] Speaker 10: dressing room. First corridor to your wreck and first daughter.
[6:29] Speaker 4: To the left, or thank you? I say, tell me something.
[6:32] Speaker 4: Is this the same Shirley Gray who sings pallid so wonderfully?
[6:36] Speaker 10: The same? But she sings them no more? Merlow rouley elbaudy.
[6:41] Speaker 4: You swallowed something bop.
[6:44] Speaker 10: That's what the great Terry Richards played.
[6:45] Speaker 4: Oh, I gather you were not her fan of the
[6:49] Speaker 4: late mister Richards.
[6:50] Speaker 10: The man who knocked him off was a hero.
[6:52] Speaker 4: I see.
[6:53] Speaker 10: Miss Gray is the only nice person in the band.
[6:55] Speaker 10: Take care of her, will you? You think she needs
[6:57] Speaker 10: taking care of? There's a killer around, mister Templar. Of
[7:02] Speaker 10: course she'll be just after another musician. It's all right.
[7:05] Speaker 4: Bettilla's gonna hate you in the morning.
[7:07] Speaker 10: He wouldn't dare A first corridor to your right, first
[7:10] Speaker 10: daughter that left, mister Templar.
[7:27] Speaker 4: Miss Gray.
[7:29] Speaker 11: Oh you frightened me.
[7:30] Speaker 4: You're Simon Templar, Secretary Shirley Gray Fanclub Cell three, Group two,
[7:34] Speaker 4: currently underground. It took chores.
[7:36] Speaker 11: Oh, mister Templar, I'm so glad.
[7:38] Speaker 4: Who is Sammy?
[7:40] Speaker 11: He's what do you mean?
[7:42] Speaker 4: Well, all the way down here, I've been asking myself
[7:45] Speaker 4: why would Shirley Gray call me? And after calling, why
[7:48] Speaker 4: would she hang up just because a man named Sammy
[7:51] Speaker 4: entered the room? You see, I'm just the old curious one.
[7:54] Speaker 11: Well, I want you to do one thing for me.
[7:56] Speaker 11: Find out who killed Terry Richards.
[7:58] Speaker 4: That's a job for the police.
[7:59] Speaker 11: Is well, they might get the wrong person.
[8:02] Speaker 4: Sammy, for instance, they.
[8:03] Speaker 11: Might not find out in time. Somebody else might get killed.
[8:06] Speaker 4: The doorman seems to have had the same thought. What
[8:10] Speaker 4: brings it on?
[8:11] Speaker 6: Well, no one knows why Terry was killed. Nobody liked him,
[8:13] Speaker 6: but nobody hated him enough to kill him. This is
[8:16] Speaker 6: almost the work of a maniac. There was no reason
[8:18] Speaker 6: for it.
[8:19] Speaker 4: You mean no one was ambitious, jealous, frustrated.
[8:22] Speaker 11: We don't talk like that.
[8:23] Speaker 4: You're hiding something from Simon.
[8:25] Speaker 6: Please don't joke. I found Terry's body, I called the
[8:29] Speaker 6: police and they said he must have been strangled with
[8:31] Speaker 6: a stout thin cord. But well, well they're wrong about
[8:35] Speaker 6: it and about everything else. He was strangled with it.
[8:38] Speaker 11: Watch this cop, Sammy, This is Simon Templar, the Saint
[8:44] Speaker 11: Simon alone.
[8:46] Speaker 8: Shirley, get out, Templar.
[8:48] Speaker 4: I'm happy to know you, too, friendly one.
[8:50] Speaker 8: Look, Templar. We're being held in this offbeat berg and
[8:53] Speaker 8: we can't get out. I'm spending all my time at
[8:55] Speaker 8: the jail answering the silly questions of these cornpall cops.
[8:58] Speaker 8: And now you. I've got rehearsals to don't know when
[9:01] Speaker 8: you get out.
[9:01] Speaker 11: Oh no, Sammy, No, not rehearsals already. Terry hasn't even been.
[9:06] Speaker 4: Yes, Sammy, why are you so anxious to get in rehearsal.
[9:09] Speaker 8: We've got a contract for a concert tour. That's what
[9:12] Speaker 8: we were doing in this corn palace, warming up for
[9:14] Speaker 8: the tour. The band's got to be in shape in
[9:16] Speaker 8: a week, and the contract is canceled. No contract, no tour,
[9:19] Speaker 8: no tour, no band, no band. We're on a panet,
[9:22] Speaker 8: you see. No, Just where do you fit in? I
[9:25] Speaker 8: like money, I eat it.
[9:26] Speaker 4: It's cheaper than food these days.
[9:28] Speaker 8: Besides, if we make out the agency is giving me
[9:30] Speaker 8: the band. I got it coming. It's like Terry had
[9:34] Speaker 8: what happened coming to him?
[9:35] Speaker 11: Oh, Sammy, Well.
[9:36] Speaker 12: Terry was a slave and.
[9:37] Speaker 4: You know it. You are a man of grace and charm, Sammy.
[9:40] Speaker 8: Send him away, surely, get him out of here.
[9:44] Speaker 4: Gentle psychotic? Isn't he? As we jazz lovers say, this
[9:48] Speaker 4: routine is murder?
[9:50] Speaker 11: Well I'll talk to him. Will you wait for me? Simon?
[9:53] Speaker 4: Need you ass.
[10:08] Speaker 12: I come in? Mister templar?
[10:09] Speaker 4: Of course? Say how did you know me?
[10:12] Speaker 12: I talked Shirley into calling you. My name's Dick Carvin.
[10:15] Speaker 4: You're with the band.
[10:17] Speaker 12: All I do is beat these lousy drums? You ever
[10:19] Speaker 12: hear that joke?
[10:19] Speaker 4: To the point of nausea? Who killed Terry Richards?
[10:23] Speaker 12: I don't know. The cops thought Shirley might have because
[10:25] Speaker 12: she found him, But it wasn't Shirley. I had her
[10:27] Speaker 12: call you so you could prove it with someone else.
[10:29] Speaker 4: What was she doing in his dressing room? Was it
[10:31] Speaker 4: her habit to go there? The carveth dear boy, if.
[10:34] Speaker 12: You want me to help, okay, okay, lay out for
[10:36] Speaker 12: four bars and I'll give you the score. I understood
[10:39] Speaker 12: Terry Richards. I didn't like him any more than anybody else,
[10:41] Speaker 12: but I did understand him. I've been with him since
[10:43] Speaker 12: the year one. Sammy has two only he played a
[10:45] Speaker 12: three year job with the army.
[10:46] Speaker 4: Sammy called Terry a slob.
[10:48] Speaker 12: Yeah, before the war, Sammy and Terry started this band.
[10:51] Speaker 12: Terry fronted at Samy arranged in, conducted rehearsals. A man
[10:54] Speaker 12: sent him greetings, and he went into the paratroops and
[10:56] Speaker 12: came back top and hard. I thought he'd killed Terry
[10:59] Speaker 12: when he found out Terry cut in for one hundred
[11:00] Speaker 12: percent of the band. I remember his hands.
[11:02] Speaker 4: Were just a tady. Did he come back with Terry?
[11:04] Speaker 12: Terry was up here mac number one. He was willing
[11:07] Speaker 12: to pay for Sammy's talent and pay good. That's the
[11:10] Speaker 12: only way could keep anybody, including Shirley Kid. It wasn't enough.
[11:14] Speaker 12: She had to work for him. She had to go
[11:15] Speaker 12: along with him a little way if she wanted her job,
[11:18] Speaker 12: and she did.
[11:19] Speaker 4: Why why she used to be the biggest name on
[11:21] Speaker 4: radio without Terry Richards? How did she ever become a
[11:25] Speaker 4: band singer?
[11:26] Speaker 12: Canary is a hard to figure. Maybe that's the question
[11:29] Speaker 12: you've got to answer.
[11:30] Speaker 4: Is Terry Richards seems to have been a dismal kind
[11:33] Speaker 4: of snail. Well.
[11:33] Speaker 12: I admired him, mister templar, for one reason. He knew
[11:36] Speaker 12: how to compete, fight, cheat, steel hip, below the belt,
[11:40] Speaker 12: but stay on top. He had one philosophy and had
[11:42] Speaker 12: fit this world. Great hooray for me and nuts to you.
[11:46] Speaker 12: If I could have had that, I'd have done all right.
[11:48] Speaker 12: I'd have been bigger than Terry Richards.
[11:51] Speaker 4: But I haven't got it.
[11:52] Speaker 12: I admired the man who had.
[11:54] Speaker 4: This has been an enchanting recital of the foibles of humanity.
[11:57] Speaker 4: But who killed Terry Richards?
[11:59] Speaker 12: I wish you'd find out?
[12:00] Speaker 4: Why are you so anxiously?
[12:02] Speaker 12: Because without Terry this band can still go places. Oh
[12:05] Speaker 12: we needed him like the met needs common Lombardo. Now
[12:07] Speaker 12: Samuel'll be in charge, don't you see, And he'll give
[12:09] Speaker 12: everybody a chance, even me.
[12:11] Speaker 4: What do you mean?
[12:11] Speaker 12: But Terry wouldn't give any of us a chance to shine?
[12:13] Speaker 12: We always had to feature his guitar. What we got
[12:17] Speaker 12: a real gone arrangement of temptation, just Me on tempts
[12:19] Speaker 12: and Shirley on voice, real gone, real gone. But Terry
[12:22] Speaker 12: wouldn't even less.
[12:22] Speaker 4: I've heard of progressive music as a sample. I'd say
[12:25] Speaker 4: it hasn't gone quite far enough. It's still in the
[12:27] Speaker 4: range of hearing.
[12:28] Speaker 12: A mister template, Shirley, come on, let's go this wait
[12:33] Speaker 12: the green room.
[12:37] Speaker 4: Good head on, Shirley, hout of the way. Call the cops.
[12:39] Speaker 11: Hurry, Oh, mister templar. Oh are you all right, Simon?
[12:54] Speaker 4: Oh yes, Angel, I'll be all right.
[12:57] Speaker 12: Hey, I thought you were dance she'd just fainted a templar?
[13:00] Speaker 4: Did you call the police? Dick of between.
[13:02] Speaker 12: Giving her smelling salts and bathing your head, I haven't
[13:04] Speaker 12: met much of a chance.
[13:05] Speaker 4: What is they say? And there who done?
[13:07] Speaker 12: It's happened if somebody slugged you from behind and pushed
[13:09] Speaker 12: me through the door and slammed it.
[13:11] Speaker 4: O my neck. Wo there must have been a rabbit punch.
[13:14] Speaker 11: Do you want a doctor, Simon.
[13:15] Speaker 4: Dear heart, I want an answer. By the way, what
[13:18] Speaker 4: did happen to you? Well?
[13:19] Speaker 11: I argued with Sammy for a while and then I
[13:22] Speaker 11: came over here and I picked up Sammy's battonment. This
[13:25] Speaker 11: was wrapped around it and.
[13:26] Speaker 4: Wait did I stand up? Oh? That floor was so comfortable.
[13:31] Speaker 4: What is this thing?
[13:31] Speaker 12: It's an e string from a guitar. Huh, it's what
[13:33] Speaker 12: was used to kill Terry, probably from.
[13:35] Speaker 4: His own guitar. Probably someone had a sense of poetic justice.
[13:39] Speaker 4: A guitarist string for a guitarist. Let me see that thing?
[13:43] Speaker 11: Wow, what's the matter?
[13:45] Speaker 4: I pulled it tight? It cut into my hands. He
[13:47] Speaker 4: wit a minute? Did you know Terry was killed with
[13:51] Speaker 4: an e string? Shirley, Well, it.
[13:52] Speaker 11: Was beside him when I found him.
[13:54] Speaker 6: Between the time I called the police and the time
[13:56] Speaker 6: they got here, someone had taken.
[13:57] Speaker 4: It, Shirley, My sweet Emily post has it that? And
[14:00] Speaker 4: one is in possession of evidence or information about evidence,
[14:03] Speaker 4: One tells the cops, or one suffers. One does. I
[14:07] Speaker 4: was afraid, but you see you are more afraid now.
[14:09] Speaker 4: This thing is a warning for Sammy, for you, for everybody.
[14:14] Speaker 4: By the way, where is Sammy? Why didn't he come
[14:16] Speaker 4: running when he heard his screen?
[14:17] Speaker 12: Same reason? I know she was in the green room
[14:19] Speaker 12: and not his dressing room. His room is soundful.
[14:22] Speaker 4: I move that. We adjourned to Sammy's little cell and see, no,
[14:25] Speaker 4: surely you're not going to be stubborn.
[14:29] Speaker 11: All right, let's go.
[14:43] Speaker 4: Something tells me we've got to break it down.
[14:49] Speaker 12: Oh Sammy, all right?
[14:53] Speaker 4: Dick. Now the cops are cops. We take care of Sammy.
[14:57] Speaker 13: I hope, mister Templer.
[15:09] Speaker 10: I have answered the questions of the police. I have
[15:11] Speaker 10: answered the questions of my wife. Now you want me
[15:14] Speaker 10: to answer your question.
[15:15] Speaker 4: My friend is doorman of this house of culture. You
[15:18] Speaker 4: are in a most enviable position. You see who goes
[15:22] Speaker 4: and who comes. Now let me review the bidding the
[15:25] Speaker 4: famous Terry Ritchley, infamous Terry Richard. Nonetheless, he was killed
[15:29] Speaker 4: a bumbling, murderous toad came within a minute of killing Sammy.
[15:32] Speaker 4: To day the same wart brained idiot delivered a rabbit
[15:35] Speaker 4: punch to my neck. I only want to be sure
[15:38] Speaker 4: it was no outside force. Do you follow me.
[15:41] Speaker 10: As the animal at one of the acro bench, mister Templar.
[15:44] Speaker 10: But I must repeat, no insidious force has come through
[15:47] Speaker 10: these bottles unless that force be you. And you should
[15:51] Speaker 10: hear Chief Ruggles on the subject of you police.
[15:54] Speaker 4: You don't like the police, mister Templar.
[15:56] Speaker 10: The police were put on this earth for one reason,
[15:59] Speaker 10: so that so called musicians could arise in the morning
[16:01] Speaker 10: with the assurance that somewhere on earth there was someone
[16:04] Speaker 10: lower on the scale of human beings.
[16:07] Speaker 4: You could be censored for that. Tell me, are you
[16:09] Speaker 4: here all the time?
[16:11] Speaker 10: Mister Templar. There are matters one does not discuss with
[16:15] Speaker 10: just any stranger.
[16:16] Speaker 4: Oh oh, oh, to say, I'm sure. I simply want
[16:22] Speaker 4: to learn who could be a murderer, that's all. It's
[16:25] Speaker 4: a simple want. Some people want food. I want a murderer.
[16:28] Speaker 4: Some people want a new apartment. I want a sneaky,
[16:30] Speaker 4: soft pedaled thug who could walk so softly he would
[16:33] Speaker 4: be unheard, and who would slug me from behind.
[16:40] Speaker 10: Even I could do that, mister Templar. I wear sneakers.
[16:44] Speaker 10: They're relaxing. I could come upon you so quietly, so
[16:52] Speaker 10: you could. I'll give a thought. Thank you so very much.
[16:56] Speaker 10: It was nothing, mister Templar, I know nothing.
[17:11] Speaker 4: You're feeling better, Sammy, Templar, You're still a wrong You're
[17:14] Speaker 4: not happy with me, Sammy.
[17:16] Speaker 11: Sammy, Please, if it weren't for mister Templar, you might
[17:19] Speaker 11: be dead.
[17:19] Speaker 8: All he hadn't shown up, it wouldn't have happened. He
[17:23] Speaker 8: got a hold of something and scared somebody.
[17:25] Speaker 4: That's all. Whom did I frighten? Sammy? You?
[17:27] Speaker 8: What do you mean?
[17:28] Speaker 4: It occurs to me that if I were a person
[17:30] Speaker 4: so willed and so frightened, I could hold a wire
[17:33] Speaker 4: about my neck and induce unconsciousness.
[17:36] Speaker 8: You've got rocks in your head, Templar. Why don't you
[17:39] Speaker 8: leave it alone?
[17:39] Speaker 4: Let the cops because somebody slugged me, Sammy, and I'm
[17:42] Speaker 4: very sensitive about such things.
[17:44] Speaker 11: Why don't you two stop fighting? This is serious. Somebody
[17:47] Speaker 11: else is going to get hurt.
[17:48] Speaker 8: Yes, and I hear by nominate Simon, Templar.
[17:50] Speaker 4: I must decline because of the pressive business. Look instead
[17:53] Speaker 4: of us arguing like this, why don't you go rehearse?
[17:57] Speaker 8: Oh great, now he's going to run the band too.
[17:59] Speaker 4: No, but at least to be out of my hair
[18:00] Speaker 4: for a while. Sammy has an abrupt personality. Well, Shirley, we're.
[18:09] Speaker 11: Alone, Simon. Are you getting anywhere?
[18:12] Speaker 4: The answer to that would have to come from your
[18:13] Speaker 4: own lovely lips. You're very sweet, Shirley, to see you
[18:17] Speaker 4: as you are now? As well as they say in
[18:19] Speaker 4: the soap operas, it does something to me here.
[18:22] Speaker 6: I suppose whoever it is gets away with it. Suppose
[18:25] Speaker 6: he succeeds next time, kill Sammy or me.
[18:28] Speaker 4: Tell me, Shirley, did you kill Terry?
[18:31] Speaker 11: What did you say?
[18:32] Speaker 4: I said? Did you kill Terry and try to kill
[18:33] Speaker 4: Sammy Simon. I'm very rude. My analyst tells me, no,
[18:37] Speaker 4: never mind, my analyst, I hate him. You didn't answer
[18:41] Speaker 4: my question.
[18:42] Speaker 11: No, I didn't kill Terry. You satisfied eminently.
[18:46] Speaker 4: Tell me something, Shirley. A couple of years ago you
[18:49] Speaker 4: were going great guns as a soloist. I remember reading
[18:51] Speaker 4: something about a big recording contract. I had your recording
[18:55] Speaker 4: of April in Paris. It was one of the best
[18:56] Speaker 4: things I ever heard.
[18:57] Speaker 11: I'm still getting royalties on it.
[18:59] Speaker 4: How is it that you came to work with a band?
[19:02] Speaker 4: What happened that you gave up your contracts and your
[19:04] Speaker 4: big career? Why do you stay with this band?
[19:08] Speaker 11: Is my career pertinent?
[19:10] Speaker 4: I don't know, but I do know that we're going
[19:12] Speaker 4: to have this cleared up very soon.
[19:14] Speaker 11: Oh do you really think so?
[19:16] Speaker 4: I've got something right on the tip of my mind.
[19:19] Speaker 4: Can't quite get hold of it, but I will. And
[19:22] Speaker 4: if we can clear it up in time and Sammy
[19:24] Speaker 4: has the band in shape, you'll be hitting the road,
[19:26] Speaker 4: so you'd better be in shape. But why don't you
[19:29] Speaker 4: go to your dressing now dressed? Huh? Go ahead, it'll
[19:32] Speaker 4: do you good well.
[19:33] Speaker 11: All right, if you say so.
[19:34] Speaker 4: I'll walk with you. Is that the idea of Dick's
[19:40] Speaker 4: about temptation going to work out? Really?
[19:43] Speaker 6: I don't know, Simon, I'm not too crazy about it,
[19:45] Speaker 6: but maybe it will, I hope.
[19:47] Speaker 11: So for Dick's sake, Dick say yes.
[19:50] Speaker 6: You know, every time Sammy wrote an arrangement so Dick
[19:52] Speaker 6: would have some breaks, Terry would insist that it be rewritten.
[19:55] Speaker 11: For his guitar.
[19:57] Speaker 6: Poor Dick would just sit up and keep a rhythm,
[19:59] Speaker 6: as he said, all he does is play those lossy drums.
[20:02] Speaker 4: Yes, it might be a break for Dick at that.
[20:05] Speaker 4: He's a nice fella. He's got something coming, I should suppose.
[20:09] Speaker 11: Well, this is where I drop off. What are you
[20:11] Speaker 11: going to do?
[20:12] Speaker 4: Oh? I don't know, catch a murderer?
[20:15] Speaker 14: Maybe?
[20:33] Speaker 12: Hello Dick, Oh hello, mister template.
[20:35] Speaker 4: Oh no, no, don't stop playing. Go right ahead, Dick.
[20:37] Speaker 12: Oh, I'll just pass the time of day. Have any luck.
[20:40] Speaker 4: And I'm about to step out of the store window
[20:43] Speaker 4: and call for Philip Marlowe.
[20:45] Speaker 12: Well, if there's anything I can do, or any of
[20:47] Speaker 12: the fellas for that matter, I know they'll help.
[20:49] Speaker 4: I thought they were all happy to see you or
[20:51] Speaker 4: laid my stroke go. That was the impression I had.
[20:53] Speaker 12: Now, Sammy might give you that impression or that whacked
[20:56] Speaker 12: up doorkeeper out there, But I don't think anybody likes
[20:59] Speaker 12: to see somebody murdered, especially when they know the killer
[21:01] Speaker 12: is still in the loose.
[21:02] Speaker 4: Mm. But you fellas seem to be taking it in stride.
[21:05] Speaker 12: Some people, Yes, some people know me.
[21:08] Speaker 4: I'm worried it would take it easy. Now, say, you
[21:11] Speaker 4: certainly need a lot of paraffernia in your trade.
[21:14] Speaker 12: Yeah, cymbals, TIMPs, bongo tambourines.
[21:18] Speaker 4: What are these things?
[21:19] Speaker 12: Oh? These these are claves?
[21:21] Speaker 4: What are they for?
[21:22] Speaker 12: Sut a rhythm? Latin American stuff?
[21:24] Speaker 15: Hey, let me show you see. Very simple, Yes, indeed,
[21:30] Speaker 15: very simple. Yeah, this is quite an array of stuff
[21:33] Speaker 15: for one who just beats the drum.
[21:35] Speaker 12: That's all I do, beat these lousy drums.
[21:38] Speaker 4: Well, I have to do some more snooping, Dick. I'll
[21:41] Speaker 4: see you're.
[21:41] Speaker 12: Out, okay, mister templar.
[21:46] Speaker 4: Lousy drums?
[21:54] Speaker 8: Hey, what's your idea bussing in here?
[21:55] Speaker 4: Amy? I've got two questions for you if you're interested
[21:58] Speaker 4: in finding Terry Richard's killer. I'm not number one. You
[22:01] Speaker 4: were in the paratroops, Yes, I was in the para
[22:04] Speaker 4: number two. Did you make patrols behind the lines where
[22:07] Speaker 4: you had to kill a man with your own hands?
[22:10] Speaker 4: You scuff?
[22:11] Speaker 8: I asked your question, did you That's my answer. I
[22:16] Speaker 8: get out of here, and if I set eyes on
[22:18] Speaker 8: you again, I'll kill me.
[22:20] Speaker 4: Sammy, get out. You know, I think i'd feel much
[22:35] Speaker 4: better if you'd take my head and your lap and
[22:37] Speaker 4: bathe my face. I hadn't feel much better.
[22:40] Speaker 6: Oh Simon, stop it. You know you shouldn't have just
[22:44] Speaker 6: barged in on Sammy like that. He has a temper
[22:46] Speaker 6: and he doesn't like to be reminded of Well, it
[22:50] Speaker 6: just should have been more diplomatic.
[22:51] Speaker 4: I was diplomacy, my dear girl, is not always a
[22:55] Speaker 4: matter of kid gloves.
[22:56] Speaker 6: Oh Simon, why don't you give it up? I'm awfully
[22:59] Speaker 6: sorry I got you into this.
[23:01] Speaker 4: I'm not at all. It's well worth everything just to
[23:03] Speaker 4: sit here and have your sympathy.
[23:05] Speaker 11: And he surely, Simon, what's the matter?
[23:09] Speaker 4: But dressful round the neck of it?
[23:11] Speaker 11: An east, Simon?
[23:15] Speaker 4: I think I know what it means now, all of it?
[23:18] Speaker 11: Why me? Do I know something? What is it?
[23:20] Speaker 4: No? You don't know anything, but you've done something? Yes, yes,
[23:24] Speaker 4: it figures.
[23:25] Speaker 11: Oh, Simon, I don't cry.
[23:27] Speaker 4: Sureley, tell me, did Sammy get someone to take Terry's
[23:31] Speaker 4: place with the guitar? No good, first to take care
[23:35] Speaker 4: of that for him, But second, you're going to make
[23:38] Speaker 4: sure the public address system is warmed up in the
[23:40] Speaker 4: wings so I can use it. And third you're going
[23:43] Speaker 4: to tell Sammy and Dick you want to run through temptation.
[23:46] Speaker 11: Oh no, Simon, I couldn't.
[23:48] Speaker 4: Make like that tired old gag. You know, the show
[23:51] Speaker 4: must go on. It's one of the most important things
[23:53] Speaker 4: in your life. And I want you to do just
[23:55] Speaker 4: as I say, or I'm afraid you're not going to
[23:58] Speaker 4: have a life to have important things happen an in.
[24:11] Speaker 8: Off Kenn's taking once and then forget it. No, com
[24:13] Speaker 8: it's up to you'll dick tat on.
[24:14] Speaker 4: The down leabe you ready? Master? Yeah? Okay, now remember
[24:18] Speaker 4: what you.
[24:18] Speaker 5: Shirley yam.
[24:31] Speaker 16: Uk I was alone. I should have known you were temptation.
[24:48] Speaker 16: You smile, luring me on. My heart was gone you temptation.
[25:03] Speaker 4: Okay, Maestro, it's yours.
[25:20] Speaker 8: Come from.
[25:22] Speaker 4: What's you got away from me? Timper, I'll kill you.
[25:25] Speaker 4: You're killing Daser over Son all over what.
[25:28] Speaker 8: Are you trying to Temple, trying to lost up the
[25:29] Speaker 8: whole plan?
[25:30] Speaker 4: The music you play hasn't lost up your band? How
[25:32] Speaker 4: could I possibly do, Simon, I'll clip you.
[25:36] Speaker 11: How could it? I don't understand.
[25:38] Speaker 4: We understand, don't we, Dick, what you're talking about, Sammy?
[25:41] Speaker 4: If you will call the cops, I'll tell Dick a
[25:43] Speaker 4: little story about a man who was very ambitious, who
[25:46] Speaker 4: wanted to be big and important, like Terry Richards, who
[25:49] Speaker 4: didn't want anybody to get in the way of his ambitions,
[25:52] Speaker 4: who admired selfishness and ruthlessness. It's about the story. Will
[25:56] Speaker 4: tell his nitty.
[25:58] Speaker 12: Oh I do is beaty loudly?
[26:01] Speaker 4: Oh, I don't bit she's loving dum.
[26:14] Speaker 11: But why did he try to kill me? Simon?
[26:17] Speaker 4: Dear, just remain as you are, Simon.
[26:21] Speaker 11: You should know.
[26:22] Speaker 4: No, I do know. He killed Terry because, as you said,
[26:25] Speaker 4: Terry took all the licks. Would you say that Dick
[26:28] Speaker 4: thought belonged to him? Then he got real ambitious. He
[26:31] Speaker 4: wanted to be like Croup of his own band, and
[26:34] Speaker 4: he tried to kill Sammy. Then he could fight for
[26:36] Speaker 4: the leadership of a band that was already great.
[26:38] Speaker 11: Oh, it's so awful.
[26:40] Speaker 4: Dear heart and a woman.
[26:41] Speaker 11: It's so wonderful, Simon. Oh, but when did you.
[26:46] Speaker 4: First suspect that you are wonderful?
[26:48] Speaker 11: No, that Dick was the killer.
[26:51] Speaker 4: I was puzzled that someone had used a guitar string
[26:54] Speaker 4: for the purpose of strangling Terry Richards. It cuts into
[26:57] Speaker 4: the hands and there's no purchase unless it's wound around
[27:00] Speaker 4: the hands, and that gives no wire for strangulation. Then
[27:04] Speaker 4: I came across the Klavi's and Dick's drums, and everything
[27:08] Speaker 4: fell into place.
[27:09] Speaker 6: I see, you know, I remember when Sammy got back
[27:12] Speaker 6: from the army and we had a party and he
[27:14] Speaker 6: got drunk and told us how they used to kill
[27:16] Speaker 6: the enemy with wire, the ends of which were tied
[27:18] Speaker 6: to batons to give them.
[27:20] Speaker 11: What did you say, purchase.
[27:21] Speaker 4: Shirley, You're making Simon sound anticlimactic, and that's not in
[27:26] Speaker 4: the contract.
[27:27] Speaker 11: Oh. I'm sorry, Simon. You really did a good job.
[27:31] Speaker 4: But just here's your idea.
[27:34] Speaker 11: Oh, Simon.
[27:35] Speaker 4: Well, in any event, Dick remembered Sammy's tales of the paratroops.
[27:38] Speaker 4: He tied the ends of the guitar strings to the
[27:41] Speaker 4: klavi's he used for Latin American rhythms, and then he
[27:44] Speaker 4: approached his victims from the rear, looped the wire over
[27:47] Speaker 4: their heads and curtains.
[27:49] Speaker 11: Oh, how terrible.
[27:50] Speaker 4: It was very clever. When you screamed and fainted and
[27:53] Speaker 4: we came to you, he stepped behind me and slugged me.
[27:56] Speaker 4: Then he ran to make his pass, it killing Sammy.
[27:58] Speaker 4: He wasn't clever enough to take it time and make
[28:00] Speaker 4: it thorough.
[28:01] Speaker 11: I think it's so gruesome.
[28:02] Speaker 4: I think it's wonderful.
[28:04] Speaker 11: Oh Simon, your cat, But I do.
[28:06] Speaker 4: The more I explain, the more you shiver, and the
[28:08] Speaker 4: more you shiver, the closer you're coming. It's what theerful?
[28:11] Speaker 11: Will you please listen to me for a moment.
[28:14] Speaker 4: No, dear, you're upset. You'll be going back to the
[28:16] Speaker 4: city now, you know. I think that monster Chief Ruggles
[28:19] Speaker 4: will release all of you. Why don't you have dinner
[28:22] Speaker 4: at my place, just you and me. You like my place.
[28:26] Speaker 4: I have a fine collection of modern arts, especially Picasso.
[28:30] Speaker 11: You're inviting me to come up and see your picassos.
[28:33] Speaker 4: My dear, when one is charming as you comes to
[28:35] Speaker 4: my place, it's not to see the picassos, but the
[28:38] Speaker 4: handwriting on the wall.
[28:41] Speaker 8: What are you doing with my wife? Template you're my wife.
[28:45] Speaker 11: Oh how depressing, Simon. That's what I've been trying to
[28:48] Speaker 11: tell you. You asked why I stayed with this band
[28:51] Speaker 11: and gave up my other career. Well it's because Sammy
[28:53] Speaker 11: and I have been secretly married for six months.
[28:56] Speaker 4: Oh no, well that's why.
[28:57] Speaker 11: I called you. I was afraid when the police found up.
[29:00] Speaker 11: I think that Sammy killed Jerry because of jealous.
[29:02] Speaker 8: I would still like to know, Templar, what you were
[29:04] Speaker 8: doing with your armor on my wife.
[29:06] Speaker 4: I Oh, I was consoling.
[29:11] Speaker 8: I've got some consolation for you.
[29:13] Speaker 4: As Emmy. I wouldn't advise violence. I'm ready this time violence.
[29:17] Speaker 4: You've got me all wrong. Shep ruggles. Sammy, how what
[29:21] Speaker 4: do you want?
[29:22] Speaker 8: You're still looking for template? What else here is?
[29:24] Speaker 9: Oh?
[29:25] Speaker 4: No, Temper, I want to talk to you.
[29:29] Speaker 8: Say goodbye to the nice man.
[29:30] Speaker 11: Surely, goodbye, Simon, and thanks nice weeks.
[29:34] Speaker 8: We'll meet again over my dead body. I'll try to
[29:37] Speaker 8: arrange it.
[29:49] Speaker 3: You have been listening to another adventure of the Saint
[29:52] Speaker 3: the robin Hood of Modern Crime, and I'll here's our
[29:54] Speaker 3: starve and some fright.
[29:55] Speaker 4: Ladies and gentlemen in tonight's cast. You heard vivid Janis
[29:58] Speaker 4: Larry dobkin Loo, Merril J. Edwards and Bill Johnstone. This
[30:02] Speaker 4: is Vincent Price inviting you to join us again next
[30:04] Speaker 4: week at this same time for another exciting adventure of
[30:08] Speaker 4: the Saint. Good Night. The scripts of.
[30:22] Speaker 3: The Saint was written by Charles Glenn. Music was composed
[30:25] Speaker 3: and conducted by Von Dexter. The Saints, based on characters
[30:28] Speaker 3: created by Leslie Charteris, is a James L. Safier production
[30:32] Speaker 3: and is directed by Helen mac. Vincent Price is soon
[30:34] Speaker 3: to be seen in the Universal International picture Kirk and
[30:37] Speaker 3: Call at Cactus Creek, And all you Saint fans will
[30:39] Speaker 3: be glad to know that the Saint comic books are
[30:41] Speaker 3: on sale.
[30:41] Speaker 12: At all you stand.
[30:43] Speaker 4: Your announcer is Don Stanley. Next it's Sam Spath.
[30:46] Speaker 3: Then Summer Symphony on NVCAT.
[31:02] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, another story with a musical setting, though
[31:07] Speaker 1: this time more in a swing setting, and the Saints
[31:12] Speaker 1: learned an important lesson to really be sure of a
[31:17] Speaker 1: woman's marrible status before making advances to be fair to
[31:23] Speaker 1: Simon and everyone else. It really was an honest mistake.
[31:28] Speaker 1: You can understand. She wouldn't have been wearing a wedding
[31:31] Speaker 1: ring even after the bandleader was killed. You wouldn't necessarily
[31:37] Speaker 1: want that you had this situation where you were secretly married,
[31:41] Speaker 1: as that would tend to play suspicion on Sammy. But nevertheless,
[31:46] Speaker 1: Sammy was not amused. But I'm not too hard on
[31:49] Speaker 1: him because of the way the Saint asked that question
[31:54] Speaker 1: about his wartime service. Now, of course there are exception
[32:00] Speaker 1: but as a general rule, most return veterans did not
[32:05] Speaker 1: want to talk too much about their experiences at war.
[32:10] Speaker 1: In fact, I've even heard radio program where they've had
[32:14] Speaker 1: PSAs advising people don't ask them about the war, don't
[32:20] Speaker 1: ask them to provide details. So for the Saint to
[32:25] Speaker 1: ask that question that way, yeah, it was a bit tactless.
[32:30] Speaker 1: Of course, he was investigating a murder, but from Sammy's perspective,
[32:36] Speaker 1: he doesn't actually have any capacity or business in being there,
[32:41] Speaker 1: So to have this unwelcome interloper asking such a question
[32:48] Speaker 1: of him, and he was probably asked about it by
[32:50] Speaker 1: the police, probably in a more tackful way, be hard
[32:54] Speaker 1: to ask in a less tackful way. He certainly didn't
[32:57] Speaker 1: feel obligated to answer to Simon Templar, and I can
[33:03] Speaker 1: imagine that's part of the reason why he had no
[33:06] Speaker 1: trouble turning him over to Chief Ruggles. One thing I
[33:10] Speaker 1: will say about Chief Ruggles is it's an unusual name
[33:14] Speaker 1: because there was actually a fairly famous character actor by
[33:21] Speaker 1: the name of Charles Ruggles. Ruggles was known for quite
[33:26] Speaker 1: a few comic roles, which cuts against the image of
[33:31] Speaker 1: the chief that they're trying to project, of this hard
[33:34] Speaker 1: nosed small town cop. Even for the era. A bigger
[33:39] Speaker 1: challenge was that there was actually a television sitcom called
[33:45] Speaker 1: The Ruggles in which Charles Ruggles played the main character.
[33:50] Speaker 1: So it's an unusual name and an odd one to
[33:54] Speaker 1: give to a kind of hard nosed, walk on police chief.
[34:00] Speaker 1: The song Temptation had a wide variety is one of
[34:06] Speaker 1: the more popular songs of the era. It was written
[34:10] Speaker 1: by Nashio, Herb Brown, and Arthur Freed and published in
[34:15] Speaker 1: nineteen thirty three. There were versions done by Bing Crosby,
[34:21] Speaker 1: so many cover versions, and that's not even counting all
[34:25] Speaker 1: of the radio singers who took a turn with this song.
[34:31] Speaker 1: Because when they were doing live music on radio, you
[34:34] Speaker 1: would often have the rather than having like individual music,
[34:40] Speaker 1: you would have the very talented show singer sing out
[34:46] Speaker 1: you know, whatever song was most popular. So this is
[34:50] Speaker 1: one I've heard quite a few versions of and I
[34:53] Speaker 1: thought it was fairly well done for this episode. Listener
[34:56] Speaker 1: comments and feedback Now and we go once again to

[35:15] Speaker 1: Love me that Vincent Price. Well, even so many years
[35:20] Speaker 1: after his death, he remains a recognized and cultural icon,
