[21:24] Speaker 6: Well, she's feeling fine, no plan at all, drinking up
[21:27] Speaker 6: some guy's door. At again, I'm wondering how I can
[21:31] Speaker 6: get rid of her quiet. When all of a sudden,
[21:33] Speaker 6: somebody does it for me. The door opens and then
[21:36] Speaker 6: walks the sky cart.
[21:38] Speaker 7: Realdy.
[21:39] Speaker 8: Somebody call me, Oh it's you.
[21:44] Speaker 7: It's me all right, Well you have been the last
[21:46] Speaker 7: two days.
[21:48] Speaker 8: Who wants to know?
[21:49] Speaker 7: I want to know?
[21:50] Speaker 8: You want to know? You owe me or something? Stop
[21:54] Speaker 8: pushing me around?
[21:55] Speaker 7: Who push her?
[21:56] Speaker 4: Run?
[21:57] Speaker 7: You make up to me? You take me for everything
[21:59] Speaker 7: I got? You call up me pushing you around? Come on,
[22:02] Speaker 7: you're getting oaty.
[22:04] Speaker 8: Your mate is running.
[22:05] Speaker 7: Come on, I like it here, I said, get out.
[22:08] Speaker 8: Come on you square. You may go on hit the road,
[22:12] Speaker 8: You'll get out of here. You let me take your
[22:15] Speaker 8: hands off me?
[22:16] Speaker 10: Do you think around?
[22:22] Speaker 7: I said, it's none of my business.
[22:25] Speaker 6: I would have paid him to take away anybody.
[22:29] Speaker 11: And that's so when did you say this was?
[22:32] Speaker 4: What did I tell you only last night? It was
[22:35] Speaker 4: this last night? That is it?
[22:47] Speaker 6: Motive and man Wally corson last man to see Ruth
[22:51] Speaker 6: Corner alive. A check on the city directory gives you
[22:54] Speaker 6: his address. A call of Peterson and you have a
[22:56] Speaker 6: good cop with you. One short ride and you have
[22:59] Speaker 6: ten minutes to go to the final deadline with your story.
[23:03] Speaker 6: On the other side of this door, Peterson unbuttons the
[23:09] Speaker 6: flap on his whole stone. You shift a little behind him.
[23:14] Speaker 6: You never can tell.
[23:18] Speaker 7: Nobody you think.
[23:19] Speaker 6: I don't know here, take the gun, come and me
[23:22] Speaker 6: stand back. I'll force the door.
[23:35] Speaker 7: Shambles with the blood in the walls.
[23:37] Speaker 6: Cautin, watch up the other room, Carson, come out with you.
[23:42] Speaker 4: Pete.
[23:43] Speaker 10: It's a note in the count uh okay to read it?
[23:47] Speaker 10: Go ahead, dear mother, mother, I'm sorry. We had a
[23:54] Speaker 10: terrific fight. I loved her and I couldn't stand a loser.
[23:58] Speaker 7: But I couldn't hold it.
[24:00] Speaker 10: I guess nobody could. Money and watch pocket for rent
[24:05] Speaker 10: I'm going away. I hope we meet soon from the coop.
[24:11] Speaker 10: Can I use the phone?
[24:12] Speaker 6: You're sure? And you can read them the note too.
[24:14] Speaker 7: Thanks.
[24:16] Speaker 10: You know there's there's something about this note. Money and
[24:19] Speaker 10: watch pocket, money and watch pocket. Hey, he expects to
[24:24] Speaker 10: be found.
[24:25] Speaker 4: What's that door?
[24:25] Speaker 7: Lead to closets? What's this money? Last of the garage?
[24:29] Speaker 6: Come on on the front way blocked from the inside.
[24:42] Speaker 6: Wait a minute, listen, engine's running. He gets down on
[24:51] Speaker 6: his knees. So do you you sniff at the bottom
[24:56] Speaker 6: of the door. You'd both say one word, no too.
[25:02] Speaker 4: Curl up my nice.
[25:20] Speaker 2: In just a moment, we'll read you a telegram from
[25:22] Speaker 2: Ralph K. Mills of the Minneapolis Morning Tribune with the
[25:25] Speaker 2: final outcome of Tonight's Big Story. Now we read you
[25:34] Speaker 2: that telegram from Ralph K. Mills of the Minneapolis Morning Tribune.
[25:39] Speaker 10: On entering garage, we found that killer in Tonight's Big
[25:42] Speaker 10: Story had escaped beyond the law by committing suicide. Solution
[25:47] Speaker 10: of case came at three am, nine hours after start
[25:50] Speaker 10: of investigation and in time for the final edition. Many
[25:55] Speaker 10: thanks for Tonight's pell Mell Award. Thank you, mister Mills.
[25:58] Speaker 2: The makers of Pellmell Famous Cigarettes are proud to have
[26:01] Speaker 2: named you the winner of the Pell Mail five hundred
[26:03] Speaker 2: dollars Award for notable service in the field of journalism.
[26:06] Speaker 2: Listen again next week, same time, same station, when Pell
[26:10] Speaker 2: Mail Famous Cigarettes will present another big story.
[26:14] Speaker 7: A big story from.
[26:15] Speaker 10: The front pages of the Mobile Alabama Press Register Byeline
[26:20] Speaker 10: George Cox.
[26:21] Speaker 7: A big story about a murder and escape and a manhunt.
[26:42] Speaker 2: A big Story is produced by BERNARDJ. Pocter with music
[26:45] Speaker 2: by Lotta Misslensky. The night's program was written by Alan Sloan.
[26:50] Speaker 2: Your narrator was Bob Sloan, and ur Conne played the
[26:53] Speaker 2: part of Ralf Kills. In order to protect the names
[26:56] Speaker 2: of people actually involved in Tonight's authentic big story, the
[27:01] Speaker 2: names of all characters and the dramatization were changed, with the.
[27:04] Speaker 7: Exception of the reporter, mister Mills.
[27:16] Speaker 2: This is Ernest Chapel speaking for the makers of hell
[27:19] Speaker 2: Mel Famous Cigarettes.
[27:25] Speaker 7: This is NBC, the National Broadcasting Company.
[27:38] Speaker 1: Welcome back, all right well. In our cast, in addition
[27:42] Speaker 1: to Art Carney, there was Joe Bowan, Joan Alexander who
[27:48] Speaker 1: I thought I recognized her voice, Joe DeSantis, Ray Johnson,
[27:53] Speaker 1: Grace Kendy and Grant Richards and as always with the
[27:57] Speaker 1: big story, and I'll probably stop talking about this, but
[28:01] Speaker 1: it seems like the biggest thing they looked for was
[28:05] Speaker 1: somebody who could perform doubles. And it's just a case
[28:10] Speaker 1: of you've got your budget and you need your actors
[28:14] Speaker 1: to give as much as they can to give the
[28:18] Speaker 1: story enough believable variety. Of course, Art Carney probably one
[28:23] Speaker 1: of the most famous people we've heard on this series.
[28:27] Speaker 1: He's probably most remembered as Ed Norton on The Honeymooners,
[28:32] Speaker 1: but of course he had such a fantastic acting career,
[28:38] Speaker 1: including an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and multiple Emmys.
[28:43] Speaker 1: This episode is interesting and it kind of plays into
[28:49] Speaker 1: this fact that this is such an odd situation for
[28:54] Speaker 1: real life, but certainly was common enough for people who
[28:58] Speaker 1: went to movies. A reporter comes on a baffling crime
[29:04] Speaker 1: and wraps up the case in an hour or so.
[29:08] Speaker 1: Most of the time, if the identity of the killer
[29:12] Speaker 1: isn't apparent, it's going to take some time for the
[29:16] Speaker 1: case to be solved, and it's going to be solved
[29:18] Speaker 1: by the police. So this episode really does lean into
[29:23] Speaker 1: the rarity of the event portrayed now. This was based
[29:27] Speaker 1: on a nineteen forty three case where the victim was
[29:35] Speaker 1: missus Ruth Shebleau, and essentially the main facts of the
[29:41] Speaker 1: episode are pretty well represented. Mills was working this case
[29:46] Speaker 1: because of a fluke, the body was found buried alive,
[29:51] Speaker 1: and the killer did take his own life. The one
[29:54] Speaker 1: detail that the Stories behind the Big Story website adds
[29:59] Speaker 1: is that mister Chableaux had actually filed for divorce from
[30:03] Speaker 1: his wife for the reason of desertion a couple of
[30:08] Speaker 1: years before, but given the way that divorces were handled
[30:11] Speaker 1: back then, it was going to be coming to court
[30:14] Speaker 1: in a few weeks, and this would have of course
[30:16] Speaker 1: been complicated by the fact that he was serving in
[30:19] Speaker 1: the military. So a pretty factual account that perhaps reminds
[30:24] Speaker 1: us that just because something is not really in touch
[30:28] Speaker 1: with how things actually happen in movies doesn't mean that
[30:35] Speaker 1: it couldn't happen in theory, or that it might not
[30:38] Speaker 1: happen every once in a while. I also want to
[30:40] Speaker 1: say that I love the questioning scene with mister Lopez
[30:44] Speaker 1: and how much he was going to make Mills stick
[30:48] Speaker 1: with the whole I'll only ask you three questions thing,
[30:53] Speaker 1: and of course the police had to get on the
[30:55] Speaker 1: line to get him to come in for questioning, although
[30:57] Speaker 1: I guess it does make the question why the police
[31:00] Speaker 1: weren't asking the questions in the first place. But I
[31:06] Speaker 1: gather that the police were cooperative and helping the reporter
[31:09] Speaker 1: get his story and didn't mind the reporter doing some.
[31:13] Speaker 7: Of the work.
[31:14] Speaker 1: All right, Well, now it's time to thank our Patreon

[32:21] Speaker 11: Am I allotted share?
[32:22] Speaker 13: The medical examiner down a headquarters says that man. You
[32:24] Speaker 13: try to say, I remember, Our medical examiner says he
[32:28] Speaker 13: was murdered.
[32:29] Speaker 11: Well, I'll come.
[32:31] Speaker 13: Our man says it was murdered because artificial respiration wasn't
[32:34] Speaker 13: applied properly.
[32:35] Speaker 11: Well, you're a man, is a smart man. But a
[32:39] Speaker 11: four bit of week lifeguard does the best he can.
[32:41] Speaker 11: He studies in classes, he follows a first aid manual.
[32:44] Speaker 11: You call him a murder because he didn't make out
[32:46] Speaker 11: with one poor slop. You tell me, Russ, you murder
[32:49] Speaker 11: the man are considering the percentage of lives that are
[32:52] Speaker 11: saved and not saved by such as we. That's a
[32:55] Speaker 11: question you may never be able to answer.
