[2:40] Speaker 2: the last of the American run. The title of today's
[2:44] Speaker 2: episode is the.
[2:45] Speaker 3: Light stand By for Crime. Hi, Chuck Morgan speaking. You know,
[3:09] Speaker 3: being a newscaster in a radio station the size of
[3:11] Speaker 3: kop puts me in line to meet a lot of
[3:13] Speaker 3: interesting people like Joe Stanley. For instance, Joe was a scientist.
[3:19] Speaker 3: I've been employed by the government to work in some
[3:21] Speaker 3: strictlyhish heisch project, the hydrogen bomb. I think he came
[3:25] Speaker 3: out here to the coast once or twice a year
[3:27] Speaker 3: to huddle with airplane factory executives, etc. And usually on
[3:30] Speaker 3: such occasions they bunked with me. Last week, Joe was
[3:34] Speaker 3: here for a couple of days. Thursday morning, Carol Curtis,
[3:38] Speaker 3: my secretary, and I drove him out to the airport
[3:40] Speaker 3: to catch an early plane back to Washington. We said
[3:43] Speaker 3: our goodbyes. Watch the plane taxi down the runway for
[3:46] Speaker 3: it's take off. Well, Glamor Puss, let's get.
[3:51] Speaker 4: Started back And no, wait, Chuck, I want to see
[3:54] Speaker 4: the plane take on.
[3:54] Speaker 3: Why it's going to look like every other plane you've
[3:57] Speaker 3: ever seen, Daganau Well, I don't care.
[3:58] Speaker 4: I want to see it just the same. And besides,
[4:01] Speaker 4: Joe wouldn't like it if we left now.
[4:03] Speaker 3: And if I know, Joey sound asleep by this time.
[4:05] Speaker 5: Flight now loading at eight three Park, Kansas City, Chicago
[4:09] Speaker 5: and New York.
[4:11] Speaker 4: You know, Chuck, there's something sad about saying goodbye.
[4:14] Speaker 3: You like it?
[4:15] Speaker 4: Though, Yes, it's a what do you mean?
[4:18] Speaker 6: I like it.
[4:18] Speaker 3: Anytime the female can find something sad enough to weep
[4:21] Speaker 3: about you, it's in their element.
[4:22] Speaker 7: I'm not weeping.
[4:23] Speaker 3: No that you will before we get away from there.
[4:25] Speaker 8: Oh is that so?
[4:26] Speaker 3: Is that so?
[4:28] Speaker 4: Hey?
[4:29] Speaker 3: Here comes Joe's playing?
[4:30] Speaker 8: Now, Oh there's Joe. Look Chuckie's waiter. Goodbye Joe.
[4:45] Speaker 3: Wait, Joing, Chuck, Nonsense, you didn't see Joe.
[4:47] Speaker 8: I did too. He was sitting way up front in
[4:50] Speaker 8: that little egg shaped room.
[4:51] Speaker 3: That was a pilot. Stupid, it was not.
[4:54] Speaker 8: I guess I can tell a pilot when I see it.
[4:55] Speaker 3: Okay, Glamor plus, you win. Now, come on, let's get going.
[4:59] Speaker 8: Chuck.
[4:59] Speaker 3: Wait, what's matter now?
[5:01] Speaker 8: Joe's playing? It's coming down.
[5:02] Speaker 3: No, he's just circling around his Hey, what.
[5:06] Speaker 8: Are the motors to stop?
[5:06] Speaker 3: I see if something's wrong. This was the biggest news
[5:26] Speaker 3: story of the year, the fourth disaster of its type.
[5:29] Speaker 3: Within six weeks, sixty eight people died as a result
[5:32] Speaker 3: of that last crish. Fifty of them were aboard the plane,
[5:35] Speaker 3: eighteen of them occupied in the Parkmenhows into which the
[5:38] Speaker 3: plane had plunged. The co pilot, a man named Jenkins,
[5:42] Speaker 3: lived long enough to be rushed to a hospital. Just
[5:45] Speaker 3: before he died, he spoke two words, the light. Well,
[5:50] Speaker 3: it must much to go on. But my friend Joe
[5:53] Speaker 3: Stanley had died in that crish and I was beginning
[5:55] Speaker 3: to get ideas. That's why I took my problem to
[5:59] Speaker 3: Happy Man's Field, owner of Station kop.
[6:02] Speaker 5: Now, let me get this straight, Chuck. You're basing this
[6:05] Speaker 5: cock eyed periy of yours on the fact that the
[6:07] Speaker 5: co pilot said something about.
[6:08] Speaker 3: A light before he died. Is that right? Plus the
[6:10] Speaker 3: fact that this has been the fourth plane crash of
[6:12] Speaker 3: its kind within two months under exactly the same circumstances coincidence,
[6:16] Speaker 3: And the fact that Joe's plane on Joe's plane. Get this, Pappy,
[6:19] Speaker 3: two motors conked out. Can you call that coincidence? Those
[6:23] Speaker 3: motors were checked and tested before the plane left the field.
[6:26] Speaker 5: I don't know.
[6:26] Speaker 3: Check. You love Pappy for once in your life, why
[6:28] Speaker 3: not get with me. I've never let you down.
[6:30] Speaker 5: But this theory of yours and someone who's trying to
[6:32] Speaker 5: take a look at this map of the city.
[6:34] Speaker 3: All right, here's the airport. Yeah, over here's the apartment
[6:37] Speaker 3: house the plane chrished into him. So now over here
[6:41] Speaker 3: is a hill. Now there's nothing on that hill but
[6:43] Speaker 3: an abandoned oil Well, practically every outgoing plane passes.
[6:47] Speaker 5: Over that area, and you're not going to tell me
[6:49] Speaker 5: that someone is up there where a buck.
[6:50] Speaker 3: Rogers ray happy. No, Look that Derek, and that old
[6:53] Speaker 3: well has been patched up and the shack at the
[6:55] Speaker 3: bottom has been lived in.
[6:56] Speaker 5: All dozens of abandoned well shacks are occupied by hobol.
[7:00] Speaker 3: And you think that one of these hobos fixed stuff
[7:03] Speaker 3: that tumbled down, Derek, just for the exercise? Do you will?
[7:06] Speaker 2: Will?
[7:08] Speaker 3: All right, Pappy, there's something wrong about the whole thing. Look,
[7:12] Speaker 3: it'd be a terrific scoop for KOP if we smelled
[7:14] Speaker 3: out the raft. Well, what do you want me to do?
[7:16] Speaker 3: As an engineer out of the KOP transmitter named Bill Adams.
[7:19] Speaker 3: Bill knows more about electronics in Einstein. Let me have
[7:22] Speaker 3: him for a few days and close down the station.
[7:24] Speaker 3: We couldn't operate with our Bill. You won't be operating anyhow.
[7:27] Speaker 3: Someone scoops me on this story.
[7:29] Speaker 5: Well, okay, boy, we both knew when we began this conversation,
[7:33] Speaker 5: and you'd get what you wanted, only get this unless
[7:36] Speaker 5: you return Bill Adams to the transmitter in good health.
[7:39] Speaker 3: Well I'll renov That was Pappy, always pulling the hard
[7:48] Speaker 3: to get along with that act and then giving in.
[7:51] Speaker 3: I picked up Carol and we go out to where
[7:54] Speaker 3: kop's transmitter is located, and how to talk with Bill Adams.
[7:58] Speaker 3: Bill wanted to be helpful, but it was ours. He
[8:00] Speaker 3: had his doubts about my sanity. Anyway, I give my
[8:03] Speaker 3: ideas and asked him to check into them. But we
[8:06] Speaker 3: came away from there with the feeling that we were
[8:07] Speaker 3: wasting the time of Pappy Mansfield's highest paid senior engineer.
[8:12] Speaker 4: You know something, Chucky boy. I think Bill Adams thought
[8:15] Speaker 4: you were nuts.
[8:16] Speaker 3: Well maybe I am, but they thought the right brothers
[8:18] Speaker 3: were too.
[8:19] Speaker 4: M But they're older than you, though, bright remark, I think, so, well,
[8:24] Speaker 4: where do we go from here?
[8:25] Speaker 3: You are going to the City Hall and find out
[8:27] Speaker 3: who owns that oil?
[8:28] Speaker 7: Well, where are you going?
[8:30] Speaker 3: I'm going out to that demolished apartment house and have
[8:31] Speaker 3: a look around.
[8:33] Speaker 8: Then that's where I'm going.
[8:34] Speaker 3: Oh no, you're not.
[8:35] Speaker 8: Oh yes I am.
[8:37] Speaker 3: Oh no, you're not. For the first time that I
[8:42] Speaker 3: can remember, I went an argument with glamour Puss. This
[8:44] Speaker 3: was accomplished by driving the city Hall and practically pushing
[8:47] Speaker 3: or out of the car. It was late in the
[8:51] Speaker 3: afternoon when I reached the apartment house. The workmen were
[8:54] Speaker 3: just quitting for the day. I parked at Gilope and
[8:57] Speaker 3: walked around back and Levi's wearing a hearing aid, was
[9:02] Speaker 3: putting some carpenter tools back into a box. Hello, there
[9:06] Speaker 3: you one of the workmen.
[9:07] Speaker 6: Yes, just quitting for the day.
[9:10] Speaker 3: Place was pretty badly damaged. Wasn't it about fifty dollars?
[9:14] Speaker 3: They say, that's quite a hundred money. Now there's a
[9:17] Speaker 3: friend of mine on that plane, or a passenger. Yeah,
[9:22] Speaker 3: I don't suppose any of you workmen picked up any
[9:23] Speaker 3: of the personal effects of the passengers personal effects. No,
[9:29] Speaker 3: not that I know of the workmen. I hadn't expected
[9:31] Speaker 3: the question. As a matter of fact, I hadn't intended
[9:34] Speaker 3: to ask it for just something to say. His eyes
[9:37] Speaker 3: darted to the toolbox. I took a couple of steps forward.
[9:41] Speaker 3: There was a briefcase lying on the ground behind it.
[9:44] Speaker 3: That's yours, Yes, give it to me. Wait, hit a
[9:47] Speaker 3: minute now, some initials here, J. Yes, what's your name?
[9:50] Speaker 3: Frian M. Yeah, it's a John Simpson. That's quick thinking.
[9:55] Speaker 3: Suppose you open up the case, you show me what's inside.
[9:57] Speaker 3: Huh Why should I do that? Because I'm telling you
[10:00] Speaker 3: to telling or asking telling? Well, I'm telling you to
[10:05] Speaker 3: mind you hold me take it easy, friend, Let go
[10:09] Speaker 3: my arm. I let go your arm. That first, lets
[10:12] Speaker 3: you and me have a little talk.
[10:14] Speaker 6: Come out, open the briefcase. I haven't gone the key.
[10:16] Speaker 3: Where is it? It's home?
[10:18] Speaker 6: I forget it.
[10:18] Speaker 3: What's in the briefcase?
[10:20] Speaker 6: Flu friends, I'm the draft. I'm gonnask before. Where's he
[10:24] Speaker 6: he left ten minutes ago? Let go my arm?
[10:27] Speaker 3: Okay, sure there are so far mister Simpson. Everything you've
[10:33] Speaker 3: told me is very convenient. He left the key home,
[10:37] Speaker 3: Perfarman's gone for the day. And somehow it doesn't figure.
[10:41] Speaker 3: That briefcase looks exactly like the one my friend Joe
[10:44] Speaker 3: Stanley was carrying when I put him aboard the plane.
[10:46] Speaker 6: All briefcases look alike. Who are you any.
[10:50] Speaker 3: Fair The name's Morgan, Chuck Morgan. I'm a newscaster and
[10:54] Speaker 3: station kop.
[10:55] Speaker 6: I never heard of you, fair enough.
[10:59] Speaker 3: You know something, Simpson, I think you're a liar. Why
[11:03] Speaker 3: don't try that again this time on my freak arm.
[11:05] Speaker 6: Don't give me my briefcase?
[11:07] Speaker 3: Yeah, and sticking my chin out on this When I'm
[11:10] Speaker 3: taking a briefcase with me and.
[11:12] Speaker 6: I am swearing out a warrant for robbery.
[11:14] Speaker 3: That's your privilege. Here's my card. The address is right there.
[11:18] Speaker 3: If you're on the level, you can have me arrested.
[11:21] Speaker 3: If you're not, I'll have you arrested. I took the
[11:30] Speaker 3: briefcase and drove to Kopker was there and she had
[11:34] Speaker 3: my script ready for the seven o'clock broadcast.
[11:36] Speaker 4: Easy script, What in the world is that it's a briefcase?
[11:39] Speaker 3: I just brought it from a second hand dealer. He
[11:41] Speaker 3: assures me that it contains a small fortune and one
[11:44] Speaker 3: hundred dollars banknotes. But Chuck, it looks like Never mind
[11:46] Speaker 3: what it looks like. STY should away someplace until I
[11:48] Speaker 3: can get hold of a locksmith. What did you find
[11:51] Speaker 3: out about the oil well?
[11:52] Speaker 4: The well and the hill are owned by Delfas and
[11:54] Speaker 4: Oil Corporation. They quit it eight years ago. Right now
[11:57] Speaker 4: all of their operations are in Texas.
[12:00] Speaker 3: Get hold of Bert Mayfair at police headquarters and tell
[12:03] Speaker 3: him I want him on hand when the locksmith opens
[12:04] Speaker 3: that briefcase.
[12:05] Speaker 8: Okay, but Chuck, where did you really get it from?
[12:10] Speaker 3: An ugly man in blue overalls was now swearing out
[12:12] Speaker 3: a warrant for my arrest. And I did my seven
[12:22] Speaker 3: o'clock news cast, and I told the listening public that
[12:25] Speaker 3: at the eleven o'clock program, I hope to have some
[12:28] Speaker 3: information that would break the airplane Christ's story wide open.
[12:32] Speaker 3: And I wasn't anywhere near as confident as I sounded.
[12:37] Speaker 3: I have expected to see the man in the levis
[12:39] Speaker 3: and a police officer waiting for me in the card
[12:41] Speaker 3: outside the studio, But the card was empty, so was
[12:46] Speaker 3: my office. Not even Kara was around to needle me
[12:49] Speaker 3: about the bragging I'd done over the air. So I
[12:54] Speaker 3: drove out to my apartment on Wiltshire. It was dark
[12:57] Speaker 3: by now. I un locked the door, went in before
[13:05] Speaker 3: I could snap on the walls, which somebody beat me
[13:07] Speaker 3: to it. I spun around and found the ugly man
[13:11] Speaker 3: in the blue overall standing across the room. This time
[13:16] Speaker 3: he had a gun in his hand.
[13:18] Speaker 6: All right, mister Morgan, I'll take the briefcase now, the
[13:30] Speaker 6: conclusion of stand by for crime.
[13:38] Speaker 3: Well, the guy wasn't pretending this time. The gun was
[13:41] Speaker 3: all he needed to give his face that ratty expression
[13:43] Speaker 3: that it came by so naturally. So it's you again,
[13:47] Speaker 3: rat face. What's the matter? Are you afraid the cops
[13:50] Speaker 3: would put your name on that word instead of mine?
[13:52] Speaker 6: My time is short mister Morgan, hand over the briefcase.
[13:56] Speaker 3: There's a smart remark. How am I going to hand
[13:58] Speaker 3: over something I haven't got?
[13:59] Speaker 6: Then you'll tell me what you did with it? Will
[14:03] Speaker 6: or I will take measures to force you.
[14:04] Speaker 3: To tell such are shooting me, I suppose, don't be
[14:08] Speaker 3: a jerk, Simpson or Simpson or whatever your name is.
[14:10] Speaker 3: Shooting me would mean you'd never find a briefcase.
[14:13] Speaker 6: You're quite right. It'll be stupid of me to shoot you.
[14:17] Speaker 6: But there are other ways. Oh, in exactly one minute,
[14:20] Speaker 6: your telephone will ring. The man at the other end
[14:23] Speaker 6: will have some interesting information for you about missus Carol.
[14:27] Speaker 3: Curtis about that one won't work either, pastor. I left
[14:32] Speaker 3: Carol at the studio fifteen minutes ago.
[14:34] Speaker 6: Did you think, mister Morgan, was it before or after
[14:39] Speaker 6: your broadcast that you last saw missus Curtis that Simpson.
[14:43] Speaker 3: If you touch that girl, I'll bring.
[14:45] Speaker 6: You do nothing, mister Morgan, nothing at all. Leave upone alone.
[14:52] Speaker 6: This time I'm giving the orders. Hello, three four eighty six, right,
[14:59] Speaker 6: put on the line, very well, mister Morgan.
[15:04] Speaker 3: Hello, Hello, Chuck, Chuck. Is that you Carol? Where are you?
[15:07] Speaker 4: I can't tell you, Chuck, they'll kill me if I do.
[15:09] Speaker 3: It was dirty album.
[15:10] Speaker 8: It's no use, Chuck, you can never find me. Please
[15:13] Speaker 8: give them the briefcase, please, Chuck.
[15:14] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, sure, sure, I'll give it to them. But
[15:16] Speaker 3: what about you.
[15:17] Speaker 4: As soon as they have the briefcase, they let me go.
[15:19] Speaker 3: They promised, they promised.
[15:21] Speaker 4: Huh, listen, Chuck, it's important that I get away from
[15:24] Speaker 4: here so that I can give you that information you
[15:26] Speaker 4: asked me to get for you at City Hall this afternoon.
[15:28] Speaker 4: You want to know about that, don't you?
[15:30] Speaker 3: Stood there holding the throne trying to get the numbness
[15:32] Speaker 3: out of my brain. He gradually came to me, Hall,
[15:36] Speaker 3: if Carol was so afraid of being killed, why didn't
[15:39] Speaker 3: she tell her captives where the briefcase was? It was
[15:41] Speaker 3: she would stage it away. Why did you keep reminding
[15:44] Speaker 3: me about the information she got in city Hall? She'd
[15:47] Speaker 3: already told me about that, And suddenly I had at
[15:51] Speaker 3: the oil well that's where she was being held prisoner.
[15:55] Speaker 3: She was trying to tell me by referring to the
[15:57] Speaker 3: information A smart girl, that lan secretary of mine. So
[16:03] Speaker 3: what I could still feel? Rat pases done prussed into
[16:06] Speaker 3: my back, and I thought of something. The phone I
[16:10] Speaker 3: was holding had an extension card on it. I'd had
[16:13] Speaker 3: it installed when I moved into the place because sometimes
[16:15] Speaker 3: I like to walk around or doing my telephoning. I
[16:18] Speaker 3: hung up slowly, my fingers curled around the heavy base
[16:22] Speaker 3: of the phone.
[16:23] Speaker 6: Well, mister Mulligan, right, mister Simpson, walk.
[16:30] Speaker 3: Well, buster, that takes care of you. The muster seemed
[16:35] Speaker 3: to be sleeping peacefully and deeply. I got a couple
[16:39] Speaker 3: of belts, buckled them around his arms and legs, and
[16:41] Speaker 3: foed them away in my bedroom closet for future reference.
[16:45] Speaker 3: Then I got into the car and headed for the
[16:46] Speaker 3: oil well. It was about eight fifteen when I turned
[16:50] Speaker 3: into the side road that skirted the base of the hill.
[16:55] Speaker 3: I'd parked at Giloppe and started up toward the summit
[16:58] Speaker 3: when the thought occurred to me that maybe I should
[17:00] Speaker 3: have had the police in on this. And looked like
[17:03] Speaker 3: it was going to be big stuff. But Carol was
[17:06] Speaker 3: up there and in trouble, and I hadn't had time
[17:08] Speaker 3: to do much thinking about anything else. As I got
[17:12] Speaker 3: up toward the top of the hill, I realized how
[17:15] Speaker 3: deserted the spot was. It was a strange feeling below
[17:20] Speaker 3: the lights of the Great sprawling city spread out endlessly
[17:25] Speaker 3: ahead the skeleton like framework of the well. There it was,
[17:28] Speaker 3: etched against the sky and ghostly silhouette. Then a figure
[17:32] Speaker 3: stepped in my path, and I caught a glint of steel.
[17:35] Speaker 3: I lunched forward, wrapped my arms around his legs. He
[17:38] Speaker 3: fell over my shoulder and I had him in a
[17:39] Speaker 3: firement's grip. I spun around in the gold. He landed
[17:44] Speaker 3: about ten feet down the slope and cracked his head
[17:46] Speaker 3: against a rock. Well that was number two. The next
[17:53] Speaker 3: one might not be so easy to handle. The well
[17:58] Speaker 3: shack was just ahead. Light streamed from beneath its star.
[18:04] Speaker 3: I stopped and considered the situation. I'd be crazy to
[18:07] Speaker 3: go budging, yet how would I Wasn't it the last
[18:11] Speaker 3: thing anyone would expect? Then the problem was solved for me.
[18:17] Speaker 3: The door opened and Carol Curtis that had framed against
[18:19] Speaker 3: the light.
[18:20] Speaker 8: Carol, Hello, Chuck, is that you? We thought we heard someone?
[18:25] Speaker 3: Carol was looking at me steadily, a look that told
[18:28] Speaker 3: me to watch myself.
[18:29] Speaker 7: He come on in. I want you to meet someone.
[18:32] Speaker 3: You're right, glama, pus.
[18:33] Speaker 8: Oh, yes, I'm fine, Chuck.
[18:35] Speaker 4: I want you to meet doctor Robert Burton he's an inventor.
[18:39] Speaker 7: How do you do, mister Morgan? How do you do? Missus?
[18:42] Speaker 7: Curtis has been telling me about you, what an interesting
[18:45] Speaker 7: life you have. I've heard your broadcast many many times.
[18:49] Speaker 3: Thanks.
[18:50] Speaker 4: Doctor Burton was kind enough to untire me after that
[18:52] Speaker 4: other man left, But of course I had to promise
[18:55] Speaker 4: not to run away.
[18:55] Speaker 3: Yeah. Sure, But what other man are you talking about?
[18:59] Speaker 7: Or his name?
[19:00] Speaker 4: I think is a snide or something like that.
[19:03] Speaker 7: A dreadful person, really dreadful, not at all like Ivan, Ivan,
[19:09] Speaker 7: Ivan Stuka. He's a gentleman who pays me to stay
[19:12] Speaker 7: here and work on my invention.
[19:14] Speaker 3: He pays me well too, Does this Ivan happen to
[19:17] Speaker 3: be a man with blonde hair who wears a hearing age.
[19:20] Speaker 7: Yes, yes, indeed that's exactly who he is. It was
[19:24] Speaker 7: Ivan who repaired the derrick.
[19:26] Speaker 3: Oh you know him, man, Yeah, a telephone acquins.
[19:29] Speaker 4: Doctor Burdon has been telling me about his invention. How
[19:32] Speaker 4: about explaining it to Chuck Doctor Burdon.
[19:35] Speaker 7: Well, I don't know. Ivan might object, and after all,
[19:39] Speaker 7: it is his money. But if Ivan doesn't know, it
[19:41] Speaker 7: won't make any difference. And Chuck would never tell anyone,
[19:44] Speaker 7: would you, Chuck?
[19:45] Speaker 3: Cross my heart and hope to die. What kind of
[19:47] Speaker 3: an invention is.
[19:47] Speaker 7: A doctor, Well, it's an electric current interceptor.
[19:53] Speaker 3: Oh what o?
[19:53] Speaker 7: Hey here and let me show you. This is a
[19:56] Speaker 7: small model. It looks like a pistol, doesn't it. You see?
[20:00] Speaker 7: I pointed at that electric bulb over there and puff.
[20:04] Speaker 7: The bulb is out.
[20:06] Speaker 8: Quite a gadget, isn't it.
[20:08] Speaker 3: Chuck? Yeah? Quite? How do you do a doct with
[20:11] Speaker 3: mirrors or something?
[20:12] Speaker 7: Oh no, no, no, no, no, not adult. It took me
[20:15] Speaker 7: years to perfect his instrument. As a matter of fact,
[20:18] Speaker 7: if it hadn't been driving, I might never have succeeded.
[20:21] Speaker 3: How's that? Well?
[20:22] Speaker 7: You see, during the last war I got the idea,
[20:25] Speaker 7: but I had to have financing, and naturally I went
[20:28] Speaker 7: to the government. I thought they might be interested in
[20:32] Speaker 7: an invention that could put an airplane out of commission
[20:36] Speaker 7: merely by projecting a raid toward one of its motives.
[20:40] Speaker 3: I should think they might. What happened, and.
[20:42] Speaker 7: Mister Morgan, believe it or not, no one would listen
[20:45] Speaker 7: to me. Oh, I went by time and time again. Finally, well,
[20:50] Speaker 7: finally I became sick, and.
[20:51] Speaker 4: Doctor Burton spent three years in a sanitarium ah, I.
[20:56] Speaker 3: Say, and when you were released.
[21:00] Speaker 7: Ivan, Yeah, Oh a fine man.
[21:02] Speaker 3: Ivan.
[21:03] Speaker 7: He felt that if I came up here to live
[21:05] Speaker 7: away from everybody, I could work on my invention undisturbed.
[21:09] Speaker 7: Ivn't arranged for the turning onto the power and the
[21:12] Speaker 7: telephone and just everything. I've been quite comfortable.
[21:16] Speaker 3: When did you get this invention of yours working?
[21:18] Speaker 7: We're about six weeks ago. Oh, I tell you it
[21:22] Speaker 7: was exciting. Ivan was most pleased.
[21:25] Speaker 3: How did you test it out?
[21:26] Speaker 6: Why?
[21:27] Speaker 7: On a plane coming out of the airport. Of course,
[21:30] Speaker 7: that's why Ivan wanted me to come up here in
[21:32] Speaker 7: the first place. He said we'd have plenty of subjects
[21:35] Speaker 7: to work on.
[21:36] Speaker 3: Oh.
[21:37] Speaker 6: He was right to.
[21:38] Speaker 7: Oh, I tell you it was a thrilling moment when
[21:40] Speaker 7: I put that first plane out of commission with me,
[21:44] Speaker 7: the tremendous crash.
[21:45] Speaker 3: Yeah, I read about it, won't you worried about the passengers?
[21:50] Speaker 3: Worried the passengers.
[21:55] Speaker 7: That's funny.
[21:55] Speaker 3: I never thought of that. I'm bad Ivan did, particularly
[21:58] Speaker 3: the planes of which important them when the visials were writing.
[22:02] Speaker 3: By the way, doctor, I suppose you have the plans
[22:05] Speaker 3: of your invention down on paper.
[22:06] Speaker 7: And that's a funny thing. I even keeps asking me
[22:09] Speaker 7: about it. Why should I put them down on paper
[22:11] Speaker 7: when they're all right here in my head?
[22:14] Speaker 3: No reason to do, except if you ever wanted to
[22:15] Speaker 3: sell the I no, no, but I don't know should.
[22:18] Speaker 7: I've had my experience that sort of thing, and no
[22:21] Speaker 7: one would listen to me, just as long as Ivan
[22:23] Speaker 7: would pay me.
[22:24] Speaker 3: I'm going to stay right here and continue to blast
[22:27] Speaker 3: planes out of the sky.
[22:28] Speaker 4: And does that seem quite right, doctor Burton? With all
[22:30] Speaker 4: those passengers aboard.
[22:33] Speaker 7: Those passengers, it's funny. I never thought about them before.
[22:37] Speaker 7: I must do something about it, I really yeah.
[22:42] Speaker 3: Well, in the meantime, doctor Burton, suppose you tell me.
[22:44] Speaker 6: Just all right, Morgan, get your hands up.
[22:47] Speaker 3: It's night.
[22:47] Speaker 6: What's the doll?
[22:49] Speaker 3: Well, well, if it isn't rat face and the gentleman
[22:51] Speaker 3: who rode down the.
[22:52] Speaker 6: Hill, a more permanent face as a store for you,
[22:55] Speaker 6: my friend, doctor, what have you told these people?
[22:58] Speaker 4: No?
[22:58] Speaker 7: No, no, no, no, I even't know. You mustn't be displeased.
[23:02] Speaker 7: I merely told him about my invention.
[23:04] Speaker 3: You fall.
[23:05] Speaker 6: Now it will become necessary for me to dispose of
[23:07] Speaker 6: both of them.
[23:08] Speaker 3: I bet that would break your heart. You're so unused
[23:11] Speaker 3: to killing people after our Only sixty eight died because
[23:14] Speaker 3: of that last crash.
[23:15] Speaker 6: So two more won't make any difference, will it, mister Morgan.
[23:19] Speaker 3: Except that you still don't know where the briefcase is.
[23:22] Speaker 6: The secret of the ray gun is, I think, far
[23:25] Speaker 6: more important than the plants contained in the briefcase.
[23:27] Speaker 3: You see what kind of a ratchet friend is, doctor,
[23:29] Speaker 3: He's going to murder Miss Curtis and me and then
[23:31] Speaker 3: continue to induce you to blastplanes out of the sky,
[23:34] Speaker 3: killing innocent paper.
[23:35] Speaker 7: Yes, yes, I must do something about those passengers. I
[23:38] Speaker 7: simply must.
[23:40] Speaker 6: And you suppose that we could rae you will continue
[23:43] Speaker 6: to experiment with the place I suggest, although will no
[23:46] Speaker 6: longer be funds to permit you to continue working.
[23:49] Speaker 3: Are you a murderer?
[23:51] Speaker 1: Of you?
[23:51] Speaker 3: Doctor? Without your realizing that this man is an agent?
[23:54] Speaker 6: Shut up, snipe, take care of the girl, all right, Morgan?
[24:00] Speaker 3: This is it? Stopping A change would come over, Doctor Burton.
[24:05] Speaker 3: His voice had a commanding quality of vibrant and made
[24:07] Speaker 3: us all turn and stare at him. Ivan's gun was
[24:09] Speaker 3: still trained on me, but he turned his face to
[24:11] Speaker 3: watch the doctor. Snyder taken two steps toward Carroll and stopped.
[24:14] Speaker 6: Drop that.
[24:16] Speaker 7: From now on I'm giving the orders.
[24:19] Speaker 3: Ivnant didn't answer. None of us did. But also what
[24:22] Speaker 3: was happening. Doctor Burton had his ray gun pointed at
[24:26] Speaker 3: the electric carrying aid on Ivan's head. I could see
[24:30] Speaker 3: the indecision on Ivan's face. He was wondering why they
[24:32] Speaker 3: could swing his gun away from me and get the
[24:34] Speaker 3: doctor in time to save himself. I could almost hear
[24:37] Speaker 3: the thoughts racing through his mind. He knew that doctor
[24:40] Speaker 3: Burton had suddenly had a change of heart. That he
[24:42] Speaker 3: Ivan didn't succeed in shooting the gun out of the
[24:44] Speaker 3: indented s hand, it would mean the ruination of all
[24:46] Speaker 3: his beautiful plans. It would mean the gas chamber for
[24:49] Speaker 3: himself at Snide. There was only one course open for him.
[24:53] Speaker 7: Drop that gun. I said, I'll drop it.
[25:19] Speaker 3: Carol and I got back to the studio on time
[25:21] Speaker 3: for the eleven o'clock broadcast. It made a good story.
[25:26] Speaker 3: Of course, everyone wanted to know about the ray gun.
[25:29] Speaker 3: But Ivan's bullet had entered the inventor's heart at the
[25:32] Speaker 3: precise instant the ray gun had sent Ivan to his
[25:35] Speaker 3: ancestors via the hearing aid. So the secret died with
[25:39] Speaker 3: doctor Burton. And all I know is what the doctor
[25:42] Speaker 3: had told me and what I saw. Yeah, sure, there
[25:45] Speaker 3: were plenty of skeptics. Even in this age of atomic
[25:49] Speaker 3: weapons and jet planes and radar projected electric impulses, a
[25:54] Speaker 3: lot of people weren't ready to accept ray guns. However,
[25:59] Speaker 3: if no more motors conk out after planes leave the airport,
[26:03] Speaker 3: it'll be pretty conclusive proofs that doctor Burden did invent
[26:06] Speaker 3: some sort of electric current intercepter. Well, anyway, time will
[26:12] Speaker 3: tell that story. There was one question that Carol wanted
[26:16] Speaker 3: to clear it up, so she caught me about it
[26:19] Speaker 3: at lunch the next day.
[26:21] Speaker 7: Hmm, this chicken salad is delicious.
[26:24] Speaker 3: I personally go for hamburgers.
[26:26] Speaker 4: You can eat chicken salad for once and like it.
[26:29] Speaker 4: Like it, say, Chuck, there must have been some reason
[26:32] Speaker 4: why you were convinced that Ivan was a phony.
[26:35] Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, it was. However, I'd rather not.
[26:38] Speaker 7: Mention them, rather not mention it.
[26:40] Speaker 3: But why rather not? That's all, Chuck Morgan, You tell
[26:44] Speaker 3: me no glamor pause. You might think me a modest
[26:49] Speaker 3: Oh Fiddley, d come on make with the words. Well,
[26:53] Speaker 3: if you insist, I do you remember when I first
[26:59] Speaker 3: met Ivan at a Poplin house. Yes, well, I explained
[27:04] Speaker 3: to him that I was Chuck Morgan newscaster kop Well, well,
[27:10] Speaker 3: he said he'd never heard of me.
[27:25] Speaker 1: Welcome back.
[27:26] Speaker 2: I actually enjoyed that episode quite a bit. Now, in
[27:30] Speaker 2: defense of Chuck's belief that the guy was a phony,
[27:35] Speaker 2: you have to keep in mind that he lives in
[27:38] Speaker 2: a world where, you know, practically everywhere they go, everybody's
[27:43] Speaker 2: heard the newscast.
[27:44] Speaker 1: Everybody knows who he is.
[27:47] Speaker 2: You know, even people hundreds of miles away that you
[27:50] Speaker 2: know he draws from me. He said, oh yeah, Chuck Morgan,
[27:53] Speaker 2: we've heard your newscast. And then to run into somebody
[27:56] Speaker 2: who says never heard of you, Well, I can understand
[28:00] Speaker 2: the suspicion. I mean, it would be like if you
[28:05] Speaker 2: if mister Keen came up to somebody and they said,
[28:09] Speaker 2: mister Keen, who never heard of a mister Keen, and
[28:12] Speaker 2: then you could just immediately say spy saboteur, because he is,
[28:17] Speaker 2: after all, the famous investigator. A neat trick with the
[28:22] Speaker 2: phone extension cord, and it does show that unfortunately, one
[28:28] Speaker 2: downside of our modern technology with bluetooth headsets and such
[28:33] Speaker 2: is it leaves us with less handy lethal weapons. You know,
[28:36] Speaker 2: in case we're being kidnapped by spies. Also, I think
[28:40] Speaker 2: this episode was a good illustration about what that listener
[28:44] Speaker 2: was emailing us last week when he talked about the
[28:48] Speaker 2: relationship between Shock and Carol, Because even though there are
[28:53] Speaker 2: things that we don't like about it from a modern perspective,
[28:55] Speaker 2: it's still pretty clear that he cares about her and
[29:00] Speaker 2: that she is a very intelligent, smart character who is
[29:06] Speaker 2: able to, you know, really play a good role in
[29:09] Speaker 2: the story and better than a lot of other female sidekicks.
[29:13] Speaker 2: You saw that in the way that she communicated the clue,
[29:17] Speaker 2: you know, quite cleverly and in a way that the
[29:20] Speaker 2: kidnappers wouldn't pick up on. And then you could also
[29:24] Speaker 2: see it in the way that Chuck rushed to a
[29:27] Speaker 2: rescue and only when he got there thought that he
[29:29] Speaker 2: should have called the police because he was in such
[29:31] Speaker 2: a hurry to save her, because he cared so much,
[29:34] Speaker 2: which is really state sweet, even if it's not particularly wise.
[29:39] Speaker 2: And all that, plus we get another appearance by Howard mcneir. Overall,
[29:47] Speaker 2: that's a nice that's a nice end. And I have
[29:50] Speaker 2: to say that despite some of the problems in the
[29:53] Speaker 2: series that I've overall enjoyed it. It's not been the
[29:56] Speaker 2: best series we played, but I've enjoyed it more than
[29:59] Speaker 2: some others, like that Strong Guy, and certainly we've had
[30:04] Speaker 2: some interesting discussion. I hope you've enjoyed it, and even
[30:08] Speaker 2: if you didn't, I hope you enjoy what we have
[30:11] Speaker 2: in store for you over the common weeks. All right, well,
[30:15] Speaker 2: that will actually do it for now. I do want
[30:18] Speaker 2: to thank our Patreon supporter of the day, and thank
[30:22] Speaker 2: you so much to Doug. Doug has been one of

[30:38] Speaker 2: for your support, Doug. Next week we'll be back and
[30:41] Speaker 2: we'll be presenting an episode of a series we played previously,
[30:46] Speaker 2: but it's a newly circulated episode of Doctor Tim Detective.
[30:50] Speaker 2: And then tomorrow we'll be bringing you Rocky Jordan. In
