[2:18] Speaker 3: The Blue Network presents Phillips h Lord Counterspy. Counterspire is
[2:31] Speaker 3: dedicated to all government undercover men, that invisible army which
[2:35] Speaker 3: protects our men on the fighting front in our industries
[2:38] Speaker 3: and secrets on the home front. Imagine Chief Counterspi of
[2:42] Speaker 3: them all. As David Harding. One of the methods enemy
[2:53] Speaker 3: spies have been using recently to enter the country is
[2:56] Speaker 3: to try and fly over our borders at night and
[2:58] Speaker 3: drop by parachute and some wild section of a border
[3:01] Speaker 3: state in All Mexico. Way back in the Sandy Hills
[3:05] Speaker 3: is a ranch on which is a modern airplane. The
[3:08] Speaker 3: ranch is about ninety miles south of Warez and is
[3:11] Speaker 3: well hidden in the hills. Tonight, a gets stop awag
[3:15] Speaker 3: and has arrived at the Mexican ranch from where he'll
[3:17] Speaker 3: be flown over the border and dropped into Texas. The
[3:20] Speaker 3: airplane has been pushed out is about to take off
[3:23] Speaker 3: from the ranch.
[3:27] Speaker 5: Yeah, ready to take off at the Texas border. Harborg
[3:30] Speaker 5: takes a suitcase. But this in a cockpit? Yeah yeah, yeah,
[3:35] Speaker 5: what is it? I do not go yet?
[3:37] Speaker 4: Why not?
[3:38] Speaker 6: A very unusual thing has just happens. Sing yeah, yeah,
[3:40] Speaker 6: No one ever comes this far from the main road.
[3:42] Speaker 6: But the ranch house has just arrived. Councilor Carlos Costelo Costello,
[3:46] Speaker 6: he is taking a long trip by horseback for his health. Seizinger,
[3:49] Speaker 6: make him leave. We do not run this place as
[3:51] Speaker 6: scave it. Oh, but I have a very interesting thought.
[3:54] Speaker 6: So suppose I tell him you are wealthy Americans down
[3:57] Speaker 6: here with your plane.
[3:58] Speaker 5: You are going to take a little ride and the
[4:00] Speaker 5: moon in the sky. I invite him to go with you.
[4:02] Speaker 6: Yeah, when you cross the border, you will fly very low,
[4:06] Speaker 6: will be very unfortunate.
[4:07] Speaker 5: But his feet and hands will be tied very tight.
[4:10] Speaker 6: The door of the airplane will open, he will fall out,
[4:13] Speaker 6: he will be killed. He will find him with his
[4:16] Speaker 6: hands and feet tied and dead on American soil. I
[4:20] Speaker 6: see there will be quite a string between the Mexican
[4:23] Speaker 6: and the United States governments. A prominent government official murdered
[4:27] Speaker 6: on American soil.
[4:28] Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, hello, it is a good sort.
[4:32] Speaker 7: Then say picture Tarans his friends say picture right nine
[4:34] Speaker 7: you like my little light?
[4:35] Speaker 6: Dear eh see get stappoy shall hear about this? You
[4:39] Speaker 6: shall be reverted, please not by medals. I prefer my
[4:43] Speaker 6: reward in money.
[4:44] Speaker 7: Go Ela, invite the official to join us. Zenbi will
[4:48] Speaker 7: see what happens. They're so glad you could take this
[5:03] Speaker 7: little flight with us canceror.
[5:04] Speaker 5: Ah, so beautiful. I was never in an airplane at
[5:08] Speaker 5: night with the moon. He is so romantic.
[5:12] Speaker 7: You are there, Councilor they have crossed the border between
[5:15] Speaker 7: Mexico and the United States.
[5:17] Speaker 5: No is it not against the law?
[5:20] Speaker 7: Or I am sure no one will have Jake, But
[5:22] Speaker 7: they have such a distinguished gentleman of the Mexican government.
[5:26] Speaker 4: What is the meaning of this?
[5:28] Speaker 8: No, you know the help worker, Yes, Hans tire s feaquen.
[5:31] Speaker 8: I tie his hands.
[5:32] Speaker 4: All Who are you?
[5:34] Speaker 7: He said, Gestapo, if you would like me know, why
[5:38] Speaker 7: are you kidnapping me? They are going to open the
[5:41] Speaker 7: doors a plane and you are going to fall out.
[5:43] Speaker 5: No, you cannot.
[5:45] Speaker 7: You will be found on American soil, and a very
[5:48] Speaker 7: delicate international situation should result.
[5:50] Speaker 8: You are a foot All my bones will be broken.
[5:53] Speaker 5: They will they will know I was thrown from an airpase.
[5:55] Speaker 5: I guess that was not so stupid. They will fly
[5:58] Speaker 5: very low. You will not be kid but your body
[6:02] Speaker 5: will not be mangled either, not as thow as you can.
[6:10] Speaker 8: So Mexico like the United States, who belong to Germany.
[6:13] Speaker 5: And you will be glad that you're dead.
[6:14] Speaker 8: You're weak.
[6:17] Speaker 7: Lah lah, Now, counselor, I should open the door, and
[6:23] Speaker 7: we will make ready for your weak experience.
[6:29] Speaker 5: You put in Take quite at me, They brid me this,
[6:33] Speaker 5: don't please?
[6:34] Speaker 8: What are you doing trying to fool?
[6:38] Speaker 5: I cannot fight.
[6:38] Speaker 4: I'm tired.
[6:40] Speaker 5: Therefore I must.
[6:41] Speaker 8: Pray, pray to whom full superstitious.
[6:47] Speaker 5: And me said Arcion.
[6:48] Speaker 7: I will not hear such tribble. They aren't enough hands here.
[6:52] Speaker 7: But do you have a crayon in your hand to
[6:54] Speaker 7: give me the Please give me a chance to leave.
[6:57] Speaker 8: Now I shall push you through the door. Scree haa
[7:01] Speaker 8: con he faults, So that's it. What's up?
[7:11] Speaker 5: Time back on the cross. Hello, Hello, this is Harding speaking.
[7:27] Speaker 5: I'm in the testing laboratory of the Walker Optical Company.
[7:30] Speaker 5: In an hour, I shall take a plane for Washington,
[7:32] Speaker 5: set up my apartment for me at three o'clock with
[7:34] Speaker 5: Colonel Marvin tele emergent emergency. Yes you wish me to continue,
[7:39] Speaker 5: mister Harding, Yes, mister Walker, and this is a grave emergency.
[7:44] Speaker 5: Now those light bulbs you have lined up over there,
[7:48] Speaker 5: are they lit now?
[7:50] Speaker 2: Yes?
[7:51] Speaker 9: But naturally, as they are high frequency lights, you cannot
[7:54] Speaker 9: see them with your naked eye. I see you cannot
[7:57] Speaker 9: see the light, mister Harding, unless you are wearing this
[7:59] Speaker 9: green hype lens in your glasses.
[8:02] Speaker 5: This is a five three one now look through it
[8:07] Speaker 5: all right? Yes, so I can see the left lights burning,
[8:12] Speaker 5: but I can't tell whether the one on the right
[8:13] Speaker 5: is burning or not. Where if you would need another
[8:15] Speaker 5: specially colored lens to see that one. Oh.
[8:19] Speaker 9: In other words, mister Harding, these high frequency lights can
[8:22] Speaker 9: be burning, but you cannot see them unless you are
[8:25] Speaker 9: wearing specially prepared lenses.
[8:27] Speaker 5: Well, mister Walker, as I explained to you, this is
[8:30] Speaker 5: a case of great emergency. It involved an international incident
[8:34] Speaker 5: with Mexico. I see, how soon could you make me
[8:38] Speaker 5: twelve pairs of each of these two different lenses? I
[8:43] Speaker 5: believe by eight in the morning, mister Harding, I'll have
[8:46] Speaker 5: a Navy plane waiting off Pier three and a government
[8:49] Speaker 5: car here to deliver them to the plane at eight
[8:51] Speaker 5: half in the morning. Right now, I'm going to fly
[8:53] Speaker 5: to Washington. What can I do for you, mister Harding?
[9:01] Speaker 5: Colonel Marvin, We've known for some time that certain Gestapo
[9:05] Speaker 5: wagents have been getting into this country by flying over
[9:07] Speaker 5: the border from a ranch in Mexico. Now they're landing
[9:10] Speaker 5: in a deserted section of Texas, where they usually stay
[9:14] Speaker 5: for several days before leaving for different parts of the
[9:16] Speaker 5: United States. In other words, you've allowed them to enter
[9:20] Speaker 5: this way because you know how they're entering, and that's
[9:23] Speaker 5: better than stopping this route and forcing them to find
[9:25] Speaker 5: some other method, which may take you months to discover
[9:28] Speaker 5: that exactly. Colonel Harding, you know we'll do anything possible
[9:33] Speaker 5: to help you, our colonel. Tomorrow night, I'd like to
[9:36] Speaker 5: have about eight Army planes from Field A forty six
[9:40] Speaker 5: fly all over the state of Texas and into Louisiana.
[9:43] Speaker 5: I'll be at field headquarters in Texas with a map
[9:46] Speaker 5: to get their reports. What information are you looking for?
[9:48] Speaker 10: Harding?
[9:49] Speaker 5: Now, one house which we recently rated, had up the
[9:52] Speaker 5: chimney a high frequency light. The light can't be seen
[9:55] Speaker 5: at night when you're flying over the house unless you
[9:57] Speaker 5: have a certain colored lens in your glasses. I feel
[10:01] Speaker 5: sure that there are certain few houses, for let's say
[10:05] Speaker 5: two hundred miles in Texas which have these lights hiding
[10:08] Speaker 5: up the chimney. I see now the pilot who's flying
[10:10] Speaker 5: these foreign agents in where's these special colored glasses? You
[10:13] Speaker 5: can see these high frequency lights placed in the chimneys,
[10:16] Speaker 5: and these help keep him on his course.
[10:18] Speaker 10: And you want to locate every house which has such
[10:20] Speaker 10: a riot? Y, yes, and it's vital. I'll have a
[10:23] Speaker 10: plane ready to leave in two hours, Harding, and I'll
[10:25] Speaker 10: fly down with you to see that you have everything
[10:27] Speaker 10: you need.
[10:28] Speaker 5: Thank you, sir, our colonel. If we can have the
[10:40] Speaker 5: houses which have these invisible lights spotted from the air,
[10:43] Speaker 5: we'll know the exact root the plane's flying, which brings
[10:45] Speaker 5: in these spies right to the ranch where they land.
[10:48] Speaker 5: And say for a few days. When that time comes,
[10:51] Speaker 5: we'll be able to make a mass raid. I see, yes, yes,
[10:55] Speaker 5: But Harding, what are we doing about.
[10:57] Speaker 10: That prominent Mexican official found and murdered on American sore
[11:02] Speaker 10: that's a very embarrassing situation.
[11:05] Speaker 5: Well, colonel has something about that murder that I can't
[11:08] Speaker 5: tell as yet. I want to check in certain additional
[11:10] Speaker 5: facts before I speak.
[11:12] Speaker 10: All right, Harding, you're doing a wonderful job, and I'll
[11:15] Speaker 10: see that eight Army planes will be flying over the
[11:17] Speaker 10: Designated Section of Texas tomorrow night.
[11:19] Speaker 5: Thank you, sir. Just look at this chart, mister Harding.
[11:30] Speaker 5: That last report mentioned this house southwest square forty eleven.
[11:35] Speaker 5: Let me have that out of chart killer, Yes, sir, Yes,
[11:40] Speaker 5: noticed how this root's beginning to shape up.
[11:43] Speaker 4: What did you bee calling? What did you see calling for?
[11:48] Speaker 11: Egg?
[11:48] Speaker 6: Come in?
[11:50] Speaker 4: I'm flying over at Sanville.
[11:53] Speaker 11: Get your shirt, gourd s where the ants or God
[12:00] Speaker 11: where he.
[12:01] Speaker 5: Has or here's a square he's talking about Kelly, this.
[12:03] Speaker 11: Square north seem intersection Main Highway, two miles from Khanna.
[12:13] Speaker 4: Can you locate on your jot?
[12:15] Speaker 5: Yes, yes, this house right here, forty two P.
[12:19] Speaker 4: We have located it. Forty two P. Signing off.
[12:24] Speaker 5: I've got that marked you signal like on Kelly the
[12:27] Speaker 5: upper frequeens.
[12:27] Speaker 4: I yes, forty two are Holly, forty two are Holly?
[12:36] Speaker 5: Come in forty two? Are come in?
[12:39] Speaker 6: Forty two?
[12:39] Speaker 4: Are quere sick? He is sick?
[12:46] Speaker 11: Northeast corner Intersection Military highway out in part of road.
[12:53] Speaker 5: I've got that one to it's right here.
[12:54] Speaker 4: Rost cake with field nights southeast due with right. What
[13:02] Speaker 4: do you two are riding all, Kelly?
[13:05] Speaker 5: These houses being spotted are on a perfectly straight line
[13:08] Speaker 5: from the border right to the ranch we've been suspecting.
[13:10] Speaker 5: How tomorrow night we'll apply this route, check all of
[13:12] Speaker 5: the houses we're marking, and go right to their landing field.
[13:16] Speaker 5: I'll bring a short waves that along with you in
[13:18] Speaker 5: your suitcase.
[13:30] Speaker 6: We've seen every night that pilots reported last night, mister Hardy,
[13:33] Speaker 6: as we should spot that ranch in that landing field
[13:35] Speaker 6: most any minute.
[13:36] Speaker 5: Yes, sir Kelly, I'm going to tell you something that
[13:41] Speaker 5: nobody else knows. It sounds plenty serious. Mister Harney, you
[13:46] Speaker 5: know that high Mexican official found murdered on American soil incert, Well,
[13:51] Speaker 5: he was murdered by members of this spire ring we're
[13:53] Speaker 5: after right now.
[13:56] Speaker 6: You mean they got him in Mexico, threw him over
[13:58] Speaker 6: the border and dropped.
[13:59] Speaker 5: Him from a plane. Yes, that is No, it wasn't
[14:04] Speaker 5: the body of a high Mexican official, but his paper
[14:08] Speaker 5: he was identifying. I did the identifying. Oh and who
[14:13] Speaker 5: watched It was one of our own counterspies, Kelly Tato's
[14:17] Speaker 5: Alis Tito yes, I was working with the Mexican authorities,
[14:24] Speaker 5: who we suspected this Mexican ranch. So the Mexican Councilor
[14:26] Speaker 5: was taken into our confidence. He went into hiding for
[14:29] Speaker 5: a few days, and Tato, opposing as the Councilor, visited
[14:32] Speaker 5: the ranch. But he was evidently surprised by them and
[14:35] Speaker 5: dropped out of a plane. Good lord, but how do
[14:38] Speaker 5: you know? He was stamped from the plains to haunt
[14:40] Speaker 5: the old trick when miscot thing, he got a pensive
[14:43] Speaker 5: from the boat and hid it in the palms of
[14:44] Speaker 5: his hands. While his hands were tied together, he was
[14:47] Speaker 5: able to write on the palm of one hand the
[14:49] Speaker 5: word air. There's the landing field, mister Hardy. There's a
[14:56] Speaker 5: large ranch house and the two bonds. It's barn. All right, hey, dog,
[15:05] Speaker 5: we'll land and I'll have the pilot take off immediately,
[15:07] Speaker 5: All Lieutenant, land as far from the house as you can,
[15:12] Speaker 5: and we'll hide the suitcase with a short waves that
[15:13] Speaker 5: are out in the field. Perhaps they won't hear us land.
[15:16] Speaker 5: We can get to the house before they know we're here.
[15:20] Speaker 9: Wow.
[15:35] Speaker 4: What do you want? Who are you?
[15:39] Speaker 5: B R two? We want to stay a couple of days.
[15:43] Speaker 5: My name is mister David. This is mister Kelly. Where
[15:46] Speaker 5: did you come from? Hussey? And the pedro over the border.
[15:50] Speaker 5: We've been traveling a long time. We want to rest
[15:52] Speaker 5: a day and then go on. Yes, I have a
[15:56] Speaker 5: room for you. You can have food here too. Are
[16:00] Speaker 5: you empty now or do you have any more guests?
[16:03] Speaker 12: We have an Italian, oh, and the Japanese. I did
[16:06] Speaker 12: not want to take him in, but we are under orders.
[16:10] Speaker 12: And your husband he's up in the barn.
[16:12] Speaker 5: You will meet him when he comes in. Is the
[16:15] Speaker 5: Japanese of the black dragons?
[16:18] Speaker 4: Yes?
[16:18] Speaker 5: And the Italian of the ober yes? Heile Hitler Ler.
[16:25] Speaker 5: Now I ask for one must be most careful in
[16:27] Speaker 5: our work. Do you expect any more guests tonight?
[16:32] Speaker 12: Not for several days.
[16:34] Speaker 5: You wish to go up to your room now, just
[16:36] Speaker 5: to clean up? And I think I'll take a walk
[16:38] Speaker 5: around and get a look.
[16:39] Speaker 12: At things have to have rushed. You will find my
[16:42] Speaker 12: husband in the barn. You will again identify yourself to him.
[16:58] Speaker 5: Calling forty two, be calling forty two, be calling forty two.
[17:06] Speaker 5: B come in calling from field that location specified. Locate
[17:13] Speaker 5: for me immediately. German couple about sixty one couple opposed
[17:19] Speaker 5: to Nazi rule. Check my file numbers for names of
[17:22] Speaker 5: couples already examined. Fly this couple to our present location.
[17:27] Speaker 5: Eleven thirty tomorrow night.
[17:29] Speaker 4: Check reports vision.
[17:32] Speaker 5: Whatney to be off at all? Haright, Kelly? Close the
[17:36] Speaker 5: kate slip one of the bushes again. Yes, that Nazi
[17:42] Speaker 5: woman in there was a brutal looking character. Well, let's
[17:45] Speaker 5: get right back to the house. And I don't want
[17:48] Speaker 5: them to notice that we've been gone too long. What
[17:55] Speaker 5: did you think of her husband? I'll answer that a
[17:58] Speaker 5: little later. I'm not mistake and I've got a complete
[18:02] Speaker 5: report on him in Washington. A fanatic, isn't he?
[18:06] Speaker 4: Are they all?
[18:08] Speaker 5: Would they be nazy if they weren't well, if you.
[18:10] Speaker 6: Weren't in on the inside of things, though, you could
[18:12] Speaker 6: stop at the ranch and not guess anything was wrong.
[18:15] Speaker 5: Yes, they're clever.
[18:18] Speaker 4: What was that?
[18:20] Speaker 5: Quick? Get back of the house. What's the matter?
[18:39] Speaker 4: What's going on?
[18:42] Speaker 5: Where is everybody? I heard footsteps upstairs? Let's get up there.
[18:59] Speaker 5: Why oh what do you want?
[19:09] Speaker 8: Oh?
[19:11] Speaker 5: I was in a my room at the other end
[19:13] Speaker 5: of the house. I heard a scream from this room.
[19:16] Speaker 5: I come running.
[19:18] Speaker 2: There's Italian.
[19:19] Speaker 5: I got here at the same time. I was at
[19:22] Speaker 5: the other end of the house in a my room.
[19:26] Speaker 5: You'd better fix your collar. Looks like someone had grabbed
[19:29] Speaker 5: it and torn the button off. Here comes to my husband,
[19:33] Speaker 5: he would be very angry. Where you may I ask
[19:35] Speaker 5: when this happened? And the other gentleman. We were walking
[19:38] Speaker 5: towards the house. We heard the scream. We ran in
[19:40] Speaker 5: here as quickly as possible.
[19:42] Speaker 13: Very pleasant, Tellibory, what has happened? Why did rand If
[19:49] Speaker 13: you scream like that, why are you standing.
[19:56] Speaker 5: H I see.
[20:00] Speaker 7: He was evidently stabbed in the back while he was sleeping.
[20:04] Speaker 7: I am not angry because the Japanese is killed. I
[20:07] Speaker 7: hate him, but you should have been killed somewhere else.
[20:12] Speaker 4: Who did it?
[20:15] Speaker 5: None of us seems to know, did you. I was
[20:19] Speaker 5: at the other end of the house in my room,
[20:21] Speaker 5: and you I would not have done it inside the house.
[20:24] Speaker 4: You know you too?
[20:27] Speaker 3: No?
[20:29] Speaker 7: Oh, we were outside walking toward the house. You left
[20:33] Speaker 7: me twenty minutes ago. Well have you been since? Why
[20:39] Speaker 7: did you not come right back to the house.
[20:41] Speaker 5: Because we were all cramped up from traveling, We wanted
[20:44] Speaker 5: to stretch our legs, take a little walk.
[20:47] Speaker 7: So so many ways it could have been done to
[20:50] Speaker 7: leave no telltanes. It's the river out of a plane.
[20:53] Speaker 5: It's like possibly you would do with a Mexican. That
[20:58] Speaker 5: do you say? Is that? Hallo told me of it,
[21:02] Speaker 5: the huse the end of Pedro in Mexico.
[21:05] Speaker 7: They all thought it very clever, said man Handla talk
[21:08] Speaker 7: so much. Yeah, let me get him up on my shoulder.
[21:13] Speaker 7: I would take him out in bariments a few gladly.
[21:20] Speaker 5: There, come with me. They would bury him to leave
[21:24] Speaker 5: no traces.
[21:25] Speaker 4: I will go with you.
[21:26] Speaker 8: Unhold a lantern? Do you too wish to come?
[21:29] Speaker 5: Not interested? Thank you? Kelly? Will you do me one favor?
[21:38] Speaker 5: What's their kick me? Just as hard as you can.
[21:41] Speaker 5: Why wait a minute, I saw that jap Haman murdered.
[21:43] Speaker 5: By having an instinct, I started to ask questions. I
[21:46] Speaker 5: knew the Italian had killed him. All I've had to
[21:49] Speaker 5: do is to ask about three more appointed questions, and
[21:51] Speaker 5: there'd have been plenty of trouble. Come to think of it,
[21:53] Speaker 5: you're right you didn't think the woman killed the Jap spy.
[21:57] Speaker 5: I think they were all in on it. It was
[21:59] Speaker 5: planned before we got here. But the teaser you put off,
[22:01] Speaker 5: mister Harding, You've got results, didn't you. Yes, he fell
[22:04] Speaker 5: for it. He's the one who thought Zalis was the
[22:06] Speaker 5: Mexican official and threw him out of the plane. What's
[22:09] Speaker 5: our next move? Just sit tight until the army plane
[22:12] Speaker 5: arrives at eleven thirty tomorrow night.
[22:27] Speaker 6: Mister Harding. That's the army plane all right. Now, kick
[22:30] Speaker 6: these glasses. It's signaling with the invisible light just to
[22:34] Speaker 6: the right.
[22:34] Speaker 5: Of the moon. See yeah, good. Now we've got to
[22:39] Speaker 5: work fast while the plane's landing. The German couple in
[22:41] Speaker 5: the Italian are in the sitting room. That's Quinn, and
[22:47] Speaker 5: you will leave.
[22:48] Speaker 7: I will be leaving in the morning for a ready
[22:50] Speaker 7: American manu which I will supply with it.
[22:54] Speaker 5: If you two gentlemen don't mind my intruding, and if
[22:57] Speaker 5: it's all right with you madam, I'm heard to have
[23:00] Speaker 5: to ask you all to get your hands up. We
[23:04] Speaker 5: both have your covered. You won't have to do much
[23:07] Speaker 5: persuading for me to put a bullet right through you.
[23:13] Speaker 5: Ming Food, We don't operate like your gestapo Burger. We
[23:16] Speaker 5: give him a chance according to our laws. Why do
[23:20] Speaker 5: you call me, Burger, so it's not my name the
[23:23] Speaker 5: name I have you listed by in Washington. You forget
[23:26] Speaker 5: your activities in the Boon before the war broke out.
[23:29] Speaker 5: And incidentally, the Mexican government official you threw from the
[23:32] Speaker 5: plane wasn't the Mexican councilor. I don't know what you're
[23:35] Speaker 5: talking about.
[23:36] Speaker 2: He was an.
[23:36] Speaker 5: American counter spy, one of my assistants posing as a counselor.
[23:40] Speaker 5: I'll promise you, Borger, you're going to pay for that,
[23:42] Speaker 5: and pay plenty. I'll give you money.
[23:47] Speaker 4: I'll tell you all I know.
[23:48] Speaker 5: Is ain'tenough of this? An army plane just landed outside,
[23:52] Speaker 5: and march out that door to the plane and keep
[23:55] Speaker 5: your hands up.
[24:04] Speaker 4: Mister Harding.
[24:05] Speaker 5: That's a sweet old couple the plane brought down, motherly
[24:08] Speaker 5: looking soul, isn't she.
[24:10] Speaker 6: You wouldn't think that this couple who just arrived and
[24:12] Speaker 6: the other couple who we took out to the plane
[24:14] Speaker 6: were both German.
[24:17] Speaker 5: Some Germans who were not Nazis. Well, i'll let them
[24:20] Speaker 5: finish looking around the house and we'll leave in the
[24:22] Speaker 5: army plane with those others we're taking with us.
[24:26] Speaker 14: Then I believe we have seen it all. Mister harding.
[24:29] Speaker 5: It is quite a place. How do you too feel
[24:34] Speaker 5: that you can live here and pretend to be Nazis
[24:37] Speaker 5: and run this place for the spies who come over. Yeah,
[24:40] Speaker 5: Mammy is a great act Christ when she needs.
[24:42] Speaker 8: To be, and so is Papa.
[24:44] Speaker 14: I will run the house and tie then look up
[24:47] Speaker 14: to the outside and the little radio station to send
[24:50] Speaker 14: you to information.
[24:53] Speaker 5: As soon as the spy arrives, we shall want his
[24:55] Speaker 5: complete description, something that he's touched, so we can get
[24:58] Speaker 5: his fingerprints, where he's going, and any information about what
[25:02] Speaker 5: he has in his bag.
[25:03] Speaker 8: We shall see you have it all, eh, Papa.
[25:06] Speaker 5: We shall do everything.
[25:08] Speaker 9: We shall give our lives to see the Nazis crushed
[25:11] Speaker 9: and wiped off the face of this earth. You too
[25:14] Speaker 9: must have had a terrible experience from the report.
[25:17] Speaker 6: Uh.
[25:19] Speaker 9: We lived just outside of Hamburg. They were happy, and
[25:24] Speaker 9: our two boys had graduated. Them were the ministers of
[25:26] Speaker 9: the German Lutheran church. It was in the middle of
[25:30] Speaker 9: the night, Papa. They get stop, broke in the front
[25:34] Speaker 9: door and dragged out two boys out of bed. Then
[25:37] Speaker 9: they came and got numbering me forgot. They beat our
[25:41] Speaker 9: boys because they were ministers of the church. They dragged
[25:45] Speaker 9: them outside.
[25:46] Speaker 14: They tied our boys to defense. They made us watch
[25:49] Speaker 14: the stop, step back and took aim and shut them.
[25:53] Speaker 5: Her youngest boy, Hans, he did not die. So the
[25:57] Speaker 5: leader guest Stopper put a pistol to his head, spit
[26:00] Speaker 5: at him and trialed.
[26:03] Speaker 9: The leader of Guestapo told the crucifix that hunts for
[26:06] Speaker 9: around his neck.
[26:07] Speaker 5: He threw it on the ground, stepped on it.
[26:10] Speaker 9: Then he raised his arm in the Nazi salute and said,
[26:15] Speaker 9: the pearl will rule the world. We left Germany, marm
[26:22] Speaker 9: on me. It took us four months to escape across
[26:27] Speaker 9: the border, but we did it. Now we are in
[26:32] Speaker 9: this country, God bless it. And you know what it
[26:38] Speaker 9: means to have a Nazi rule.
[26:41] Speaker 5: We gotta here for step. Somebody is coming. Careful, there
[26:44] Speaker 5: may be trouble.
[26:47] Speaker 14: Yeah, come in.
[26:50] Speaker 8: I am a traveler X four Mexico. And that's the
[26:54] Speaker 8: end of table.
[26:55] Speaker 14: You have the right at the right place.
[26:57] Speaker 8: X four our playlet force.
[27:00] Speaker 13: I've had to come the last hundred miles by motorcycles, okay, header, the.
[27:07] Speaker 14: Pillow, the rule of boat, the shitter, little rule de
[27:11] Speaker 14: wulved I didn't end.
[27:14] Speaker 8: I shall show you to your room.
[27:17] Speaker 5: Why these men we don't ask questions like that around here. Yes,
[27:21] Speaker 5: you alright, take my bag? Yeah, remember bringing a light
[27:25] Speaker 5: from demento. We will show this gentleman to his school. Yeah, Papa, uh,
[27:30] Speaker 5: this way please. I don't think Kelly, that were needed
[27:38] Speaker 5: here anymore. No, let's go to the plane. Look how
[27:48] Speaker 5: bright the stars are tonight, mister hottey yeh ask Kelly. Well,
[27:53] Speaker 5: they're one of the things in this world that are permanent.
[27:57] Speaker 5: Permanent like the faith of Christian people. Now, at the
[28:02] Speaker 5: time of the Crusaders, Barbarians tried to crush faith from
[28:06] Speaker 5: the face of the earth. But the Christians rose up
[28:09] Speaker 5: and pushed those hordes right back into the seas.
[28:13] Speaker 4: Well.
[28:14] Speaker 5: The great Christian Army has risen again, and Nazism will
[28:18] Speaker 5: be wiped from the face of the earth.
[28:39] Speaker 3: All of this couplied has spread a great army of counterspies,
[28:43] Speaker 3: men whose names may never be known or their deeds
[28:46] Speaker 3: ever revealed. But twenty four hours a day, seven days

[30:32] Speaker 3: of the ten percent Club. Join today. Counter Spy originated
[30:38] Speaker 3: in New York. You are listening to the Blue Network.
[30:52] Speaker 1: Welcome back. First of all, I just have to say,
[30:56] Speaker 1: regarding the and credits that I've felt seen that the
[31:03] Speaker 1: Mountain time zone was mentioned in Growing Up Watching television
[31:08] Speaker 1: when they had schedules and they mentioned the time zone,
[31:11] Speaker 1: they would say it would be on at this time
[31:14] Speaker 1: Eastern time and that time Central Time, or they would
[31:18] Speaker 1: say it would be on this time Pacific time. But
[31:21] Speaker 1: nobody would ever mention the Mountain time zone, not unless
[31:25] Speaker 1: I was watching something local. And in old time radio,
[31:29] Speaker 1: you don't hear a bunch about time zones unless usually
[31:35] Speaker 1: the main time zone that I've heard is Eastern or
[31:40] Speaker 1: Eastern wartime. I think this is the first time that
[31:43] Speaker 1: I've heard the Mountain time zone mentioned that I can remember,
[31:47] Speaker 1: So as someone who has spent the majority of my
[31:49] Speaker 1: life in the Mountain time zone, I was just really
[31:52] Speaker 1: pleased by that. Now, of course you'll see hear what
[31:56] Speaker 1: I mentioned about the title, because while there are Nazis,
[32:01] Speaker 1: they aren't really from Mexico. They're coming well, I mean
[32:05] Speaker 1: they're coming up from Mexico, but they're not from Mexico.
[32:09] Speaker 1: They're from Germany. So that's a little bit confusing. Now,
[32:13] Speaker 1: for the episode itself, it's a mix of what we
[32:18] Speaker 1: knew and what we didn't now. Wartime media tended to
[32:24] Speaker 1: really lean heavily into the idea of a very intricate
[32:31] Speaker 1: axis spy network working its way into the United States.
[32:37] Speaker 1: There was no axis spy activity that was to outlandish,
[32:44] Speaker 1: and some of that may have been just a war
[32:48] Speaker 1: propaganda efforts to keep people vigilant, but there's also a
[32:52] Speaker 1: certain fog of war elements. The FBI is not going
[32:56] Speaker 1: to go ahead and call up Philip's lord and let
[32:59] Speaker 1: them know what the Nazis are up to. What's actually
[33:02] Speaker 1: going on is top secrets, So you can make up
[33:06] Speaker 1: whatever you want, you know, as long as what you
[33:09] Speaker 1: don't make up just happens to be too close to
[33:12] Speaker 1: the truth and reality. The sort of access spine that
[33:18] Speaker 1: we dealt with in the country really came as a
[33:21] Speaker 1: result of things such as you could see in the
[33:24] Speaker 1: movie The House on ninety Second Street, where the Nazis
[33:29] Speaker 1: set up a spa network using people they already had
[33:34] Speaker 1: in the United States to spy and report back to
[33:40] Speaker 1: Berlin on the preparations and actions of the American National
[33:47] Speaker 1: security apparatus. The reality is that there's was a limit
[33:52] Speaker 1: to the Nazis resources. The war was an intensive effort,
[33:58] Speaker 1: both in terms of man power and financial resources, so
[34:02] Speaker 1: there's a limit to what the Germans would feasibly do
[34:08] Speaker 1: at that point in the war, dealing with the United States,
[34:12] Speaker 1: which again pretty far from their front lines. Certainly they
[34:16] Speaker 1: couldn't afford the scale of operations that kept fictional heroes
[34:22] Speaker 1: very busy during World War Two. The random murder thrown
[34:26] Speaker 1: in was kind of interesting, and I like the idea
[34:29] Speaker 1: that Harding had to restrain himself from solving the case
[34:35] Speaker 1: just as a matter of habit. The suggestion of kind
[34:38] Speaker 1: of a racial animus between the European Fascist and the
[34:47] Speaker 1: Japanese is interesting. Now there's an argument to say that
[34:52] Speaker 1: it would not have happened, and that there wouldn't be
[34:56] Speaker 1: that animus. For example, Hitler declared the Japanese quote unquote
[35:02] Speaker 1: honorary arians.
[35:04] Speaker 4: But that is one of.
[35:05] Speaker 1: Those sort of practical compromises on ideology that people who
[35:13] Speaker 1: have to operate in the real world have to make.
[35:17] Speaker 1: But to me, it's not that implausible that people who
[35:21] Speaker 1: are fully bought into these sort of ideologies would follow
[35:26] Speaker 1: them to their rational conclusion, regardless of the practical real
[35:33] Speaker 1: world implications. The final thing that was interesting was this
[35:38] Speaker 1: sort of religious angle that came in at the end,
[35:42] Speaker 1: and I found myself just instinctively wondering, Okay, what occasion
[35:47] Speaker 1: was this because it's too late in the year for Easter,
[35:51] Speaker 1: but then I remembered it was nineteen forty two. This
[35:54] Speaker 1: type of program could really air any type of the
[35:58] Speaker 1: year and it would be appropriate. And the history of
[36:02] Speaker 1: Hitler's relationship with the Church is somewhat fraught. As a
[36:09] Speaker 1: pure ideological matter, Nazism had very little use for traditional
[36:18] Speaker 1: Christian beliefs, but was more than happy to co op
[36:23] Speaker 1: the church it for his own ends. And certainly there
[36:27] Speaker 1: were some churches more than happy to go along with it,
[36:31] Speaker 1: and other churches who just really tried to keep their
[36:35] Speaker 1: head down and avoid coming into Hitler's ire. But then
[36:41] Speaker 1: there were those who did stand up against him, and
[36:45] Speaker 1: they paid a price. And there are all kinds of
[36:48] Speaker 1: historical examples of that, whether you're thinking Martin Neimoler or
[36:54] Speaker 1: Dietrich Bonhoeffer or Corey Timboone and her family. And some
[36:59] Speaker 1: detail of the sort of persecution of the Nazis had
[37:03] Speaker 1: made its way back to the United States due to
[37:07] Speaker 1: people that had gotten out, though a lot was lapped
[37:12] Speaker 1: the imagination, and there were some very broad pictures painted
[37:18] Speaker 1: for the purposes of war propaganda. Though honestly, when I
[37:22] Speaker 1: look at or listen to these sort of stories that
[37:28] Speaker 1: were told during World War Two where they're just kind
[37:31] Speaker 1: of imagining what might be going on. You know, they
[37:34] Speaker 1: don't have solid information of everything going on, but they're
[37:39] Speaker 1: making up and embellishing and telling stories that portrayed the
[37:44] Speaker 1: Nazis as bad as the bad guys. And oftentimes when
[37:48] Speaker 1: you have these sort of wartime propaganda, it turns out
[37:53] Speaker 1: that there's been major exaggeration and things aren't as bad
[37:57] Speaker 1: as the propagandists were saying. But what we actually found
[38:02] Speaker 1: when we went in is that things.
[38:04] Speaker 8: Were actually worse.
[38:07] Speaker 1: Shifting quick, loud, who want to talk about our star
[38:10] Speaker 1: Don McLoughlin. This is one of McLoughlin's best known roles,
[38:16] Speaker 1: his second best remembered role. He had been on radio
[38:21] Speaker 1: since nineteen thirty three, a lot of soap work. He
[38:26] Speaker 1: starred in a Chaplain Jim during the war and drew
[38:33] Speaker 1: on his background because he came from a long line
[38:36] Speaker 1: of ministers and had actually been planning to study the
[38:41] Speaker 1: ministry and went into acting instead. And he also ended
[38:45] Speaker 1: up being one of the actors to play Tennessee Jet.
[38:50] Speaker 1: But his most noted role was on television soap operas.
[38:56] Speaker 1: He was one of the original star of As the
[39:01] Speaker 1: World Turns, where he played Chris Hughes, and he played
[39:07] Speaker 1: that role for thirty years, though with a few interruptions,
[39:14] Speaker 1: particularly during the early eighties, and he brings a really
[39:19] Speaker 1: steady presence to Counterspot, although he's not always the man
[39:25] Speaker 1: of action and would give increasingly more of the dangerous
[39:30] Speaker 1: stuff to another star, which we'll meet in a few weeks,
[39:35] Speaker 1: although technically we met him multiple times before on other
[39:39] Speaker 1: New York radio programs, but we'll talk about that later. Now,
[39:44] Speaker 1: let's go ahead and thank our Patreon supporter of the day,
