[1:09] Speaker 2: is Miss Godby's School for Girls.
[1:37] Speaker 4: The Adventures of the Saint, starring Vincent Price. The Saint,
[1:52] Speaker 4: based on characters created by Leslie Travers, and known to
[1:55] Speaker 4: millions from books, magazines, and motion pictures. The Robin Hood
[1:59] Speaker 4: of modern crime now comes transcribed to radio, starring Hollywood's
[2:03] Speaker 4: brilliant and talented actor Vincent Price as.
[2:07] Speaker 1: The saint. Hello.
[2:20] Speaker 5: Good morning. Is Simon Templer the saint?
[2:23] Speaker 1: Good morning. I'll tell him when he comes in.
[2:25] Speaker 5: For a saint, you sleep pretty late.
[2:27] Speaker 1: It's because of my... Hey, who is this?
[2:30] Speaker 5: You know Miles Banning?
[2:31] Speaker 1: Miles Banning? Yeah, I know him slightly.
[2:35] Speaker 5: I got a message for him. You know his daughter, Felice?
[2:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, a cute little girl with braces on her teeth
[2:41] Speaker 1: and pigtails. What about her?
[2:42] Speaker 5: She's almost 18 now, no more pigtails. But nobody misses him,
[2:45] Speaker 5: you know what I mean?
[2:46] Speaker 1: Look, my friend, if you have a message for Banning,
[2:48] Speaker 1: why not give it to him yourself?
[2:50] Speaker 5: He gets excited. I want you to break it to
[2:53] Speaker 5: him gently. It'll cost him 200 grand to get his
[2:56] Speaker 5: daughter back.
[2:58] Speaker 1: Get her back? Well, who's got her?
[3:00] Speaker 6: I have.
[3:01] Speaker 5: And I want the money tonight, tell him, at his
[3:03] Speaker 5: place on the bay.
[3:04] Speaker 1: His place on the bay in the... I suppose I'd
[3:07] Speaker 1: tell him that if he doesn't pay, he'll never see
[3:09] Speaker 1: his daughter again.
[3:09] Speaker 5: He'll see her, all right. He'll see her. But he'll
[3:13] Speaker 5: wish he hadn't.
[3:15] Speaker 7: Goodbye, Saint.
[3:17] Speaker 1: Hey, wait a minute, my friend. Hello?
[3:20] Speaker 3: Hello?
[3:21] Speaker 8: Hello?
[3:22] Speaker 9: Your party has hung up, sir.
[3:23] Speaker 10: Do you have his number?
[3:25] Speaker 1: Not yet, operator. But I'm going to try real hard.
[3:36] Speaker 1: Go right in, Mr. Templer. Mr. Banning's been waiting since
[3:39] Speaker 1: you called. Oh, thank you. Mr. Templer, come in. Come in. Oh,
[3:45] Speaker 1: thank you, Mr. Banning. I'm sorry we had to meet
[3:48] Speaker 1: again under such circumstances. You heard from him. She's all right.
[3:52] Speaker 1: She is all right. Well, I think there's very little
[3:54] Speaker 1: doubt about it, Mr. Banning. Until he gets the money,
[3:56] Speaker 1: he would hardly... How much? How much does he want? $ 200, 000
[3:59] Speaker 1: by tonight. All right. He shall have it. You can
[4:04] Speaker 1: raise that amount in such a short time? He's got Felice. Yes.
[4:09] Speaker 1: Tell me, when did it happen?
[4:10] Speaker 11: Two days ago. From her school. From Miss Godby's finishing school.
[4:14] Speaker 11: I've been waiting to hear ever since. You've notified the police?
[4:17] Speaker 1: The police? What have they to do with it? Well,
[4:20] Speaker 1: after all, in a forcible kidnapping with a man threatening violence... Kidnapping? Violence?
[4:25] Speaker 11: My dear Templer, this man isn't threatening to kill Felice.
[4:28] Speaker 11: He's threatening to marry her.
[4:30] Speaker 1: Marry her?
[4:31] Speaker 12: Yes.
[4:32] Speaker 1: Oh, I see. And, uh... Is she willing to marry him?
[4:35] Speaker 11: Unfortunately, she is. That's the tragic part of it. You see,
[4:39] Speaker 11: she's only 17. Then you must know the man. Well,
[4:43] Speaker 11: as well as you ever know any man who takes
[4:44] Speaker 11: care of your horses. I employed him as a groom.
[4:47] Speaker 11: His name is Hendron, Tony Hendron.
[4:49] Speaker 1: And you're willing to pay $ 200, 000 to keep this marriage
[4:52] Speaker 1: from happening? Oh, more, more.
[4:54] Speaker 11: Felice has a million-dollar trust fund from her mother. She'll
[4:57] Speaker 11: be an heiress at 21. I'll pay anything.
[5:00] Speaker 1: He wants the money at your place on the bay tonight.
[5:04] Speaker 1: Do you have any idea why he didn't call you direct?
[5:06] Speaker 11: I'm afraid I'd have detectives here checking the call, I imagine.
[5:10] Speaker 1: But you didn't. Why not? The police are pretty good
[5:13] Speaker 1: at finding people.
[5:14] Speaker 11: I couldn't take a chance on this thing getting in
[5:16] Speaker 11: the papers, Templer.
[5:17] Speaker 1: You can see that. Of course. And I might try
[5:20] Speaker 1: picking up his trail. Before tonight? It's possible. Not probable,
[5:24] Speaker 1: but possible. Well, I think my first stop will be
[5:28] Speaker 1: Miss Godby's school, Mr. Banning. I'll let you know if
[5:31] Speaker 1: I find anything and... Look, try to relax. Things will
[5:35] Speaker 1: work out all right. Relax? If you had a daughter
[5:38] Speaker 1: who was trying to throw her life away, you couldn't...
[5:41] Speaker 1: Of course I couldn't. I promise you one thing, Mr. Banning.
[5:44] Speaker 1: I'll do my best to find her. I know you will.
[5:59] Speaker 1: I beg your pardon. No, oh. You frighten me. Oh,
[6:04] Speaker 1: I'm terribly sorry. Could you tell me where to find
[6:07] Speaker 1: Miss Godbey? I am Miss Godbey. Oh, how fascinating.
[6:12] Speaker 7: That is, I am head of Miss Godbey's school. And
[6:14] Speaker 7: while I'm really Mr. Godbey, still there's always been a
[6:17] Speaker 7: Miss Godbey at the head of Miss Godbey. So, in
[6:19] Speaker 7: a sense, I am Miss Godbey. Uh, yes. You see,
[6:24] Speaker 7: the school was founded by my great-aunt, Hazel Godbey. My
[6:27] Speaker 7: office is right down the hall here. And ever since then,
[6:29] Speaker 7: it's been a tradition with us Godbeys to.
[6:33] Speaker 3: What?
[6:34] Speaker 7: Girls.
[6:35] Speaker 1: Girls, young ladies, please. Come right in here, sir. Thank you. Honestly, Mr... Templer,
[6:45] Speaker 1: Simon Templer. Honestly, Mr.
[6:47] Speaker 7: Templer, there are times when I'm almost glad Great Aunt
[6:50] Speaker 7: Hazel is not alive today.
[6:52] Speaker 1: God be girls, today are... are....
[6:55] Speaker 7: Well, you saw? It was a little frightening. Flattering, but frightening.
[7:00] Speaker 7: That's exactly it.
[7:01] Speaker 1: Frightening. The word for the modern generation. Frightening.
[7:05] Speaker 7: I was just visiting one of our most interesting and
[7:07] Speaker 7: traditional classes.
[7:09] Speaker 1: How to enter a drawing room. And what do you
[7:10] Speaker 1: think I found there? Apathy.
[7:13] Speaker 7: Absolute, undisguised apathy.
[7:15] Speaker 1: Mr. Gadby, I'm here about Felice Banning. A case in point.
[7:21] Speaker 7: A young girl from one of the most socially prominent
[7:23] Speaker 7: families in this city.
[7:25] Speaker 1: And she runs away with a jockey. A groom. Worse.
[7:30] Speaker 7: If this ever gets into the papers, Mr. Templer, I'm
[7:33] Speaker 7: afraid that Miss Godbez is finished.
[7:35] Speaker 1: That is the word. Finished. Felice did leave here, then,
[7:39] Speaker 1: with Hendren? Certainly. I told her father so. Any ideas
[7:42] Speaker 1: about whether two of them might have gone? Mr. Templer. Yes,
[7:47] Speaker 1: I withdraw the question. Oh, you'll have to excuse me, Mr. Templer.
[7:52] Speaker 1: There are just a few classes I insist on teaching myself,
[7:55] Speaker 1: and this is one of them. Fine needlework. Hmm. If
[7:59] Speaker 1: you care to sit in a wait... Thank you. I will, Mr. Godfrey. Well, then,
[8:05] Speaker 1: until later. Until later. Girls! Girls!
[8:13] Speaker 5: Don't let me see you!
[8:15] Speaker 1: Huh?
[8:16] Speaker 10: Would you like to have words with me?
[8:18] Speaker 1: Why, now, that's a fascinating question.
[8:21] Speaker 10: I am not like those adolescents down the hall.
[8:26] Speaker 1: Exhibitionists.
[8:27] Speaker 10: Are you a saint?
[8:28] Speaker 1: Yes, I am.
[8:29] Speaker 10: Then you're here about Felice.
[8:30] Speaker 1: You know Felice?
[8:31] Speaker 10: She's my roommate and dearest friend.
[8:33] Speaker 1: Oh, please sit down, miss.
[8:35] Speaker 2: Morrison.
[8:36] Speaker 10: Barbara Morrison.
[8:37] Speaker 1: Well, I'd like very much to have words with you
[8:40] Speaker 1: about Felice.
[8:41] Speaker 9: Well, I've made a deep study of her.
[8:44] Speaker 10: She's a psychological wreck.
[8:46] Speaker 1: I see. Did she talk to you about a man
[8:49] Speaker 1: named Tony Hendren?
[8:51] Speaker 10: She thought she.
[8:52] Speaker 9: Couldn't talk to me about men because she was 17.
[8:55] Speaker 10: It's a very uninteresting age, really.
[8:57] Speaker 1: I much prefer 21 myself.
[9:00] Speaker 10: You do, actually? Well, isn't that a coincidence?
[9:04] Speaker 1: I'm 21. Yeah, naturally. Barbara, do you have a theory
[9:09] Speaker 1: about why Felice would run away with Tony Hendren?
[9:11] Speaker 10: Well, she'd never marry him, of course. She'll never marry anyone.
[9:15] Speaker 1: For any particular reason?
[9:16] Speaker 10: Father fixation.
[9:18] Speaker 9: Roughly the reverse of the more familiar Oedipus situation with
[9:21] Speaker 9: a male child. Her life is completely subordinate to that
[9:25] Speaker 9: of the beloved, all-powerful father. Though why, I don't know.
[9:29] Speaker 9: Her father's a horrible mess.
[9:31] Speaker 1: Then you don't think she'd marry Hendon?
[9:33] Speaker 10: It's not as simple as that.
[9:35] Speaker 9: She might see a father symbol in him, or this
[9:38] Speaker 9: might be a temporary rejection of authority, or.
[9:41] Speaker 1: Or it might be love. Love?
[9:44] Speaker 10: How utterly naive. Oh, I just thought of something. Would
[9:49] Speaker 10: you be interested in some pictures?
[9:51] Speaker 1: What kind of pictures?
[9:53] Speaker 10: Some snaps of Tony Hendren.
[9:54] Speaker 1: Yes, I would be interested.
[9:56] Speaker 10: When Felice left, I took them for safekeeping. Mother God.
[10:00] Speaker 10: would have had a fit if he'd found them.
[10:01] Speaker 1: I can imagine.
[10:03] Speaker 10: I keep them in my purse constantly. Here they are.
[10:08] Speaker 1: This is Tony Hendren?
[10:09] Speaker 2: Yes.
[10:10] Speaker 10: Isn't he handsome? I think he looks a lot like
[10:13] Speaker 10: Gregory Peck.
[10:15] Speaker 1: Yes, in a wilted sort of way.
[10:17] Speaker 10: Here's another one of him, taken at the beach.
[10:21] Speaker 1: Felice couldn't have grown up that much.
[10:23] Speaker 10: Oh, that isn't Felice with him in the picture.
[10:25] Speaker 1: Oh? Oh, who is it? I don't know. Well, I
[10:28] Speaker 1: certainly admire Tony's taste in brunettes. Barbara, I can't thank
[10:32] Speaker 1: you enough for your help.
[10:33] Speaker 10: Feel free to call on me at any time.
[10:35] Speaker 1: Thank you. Tell me, how are you so sure of
[10:38] Speaker 1: your diagnosis of Felice? Have you studied psychoanalysis?
[10:43] Speaker 10: Studied it?
[10:44] Speaker 8: Mr.
[10:44] Speaker 10: Templer, my family sent me to an analyst at the
[10:48] Speaker 10: age of three.
[10:49] Speaker 1: Oh, but now you're completely normal. Of course.
[10:52] Speaker 9: Except that now I've taken up Dianetics. Only to straighten
[10:55] Speaker 9: out my friends, of course.
[10:57] Speaker 1: Well, thank you and goodbye, Mary Worth. Did you learn anything, Templer? Anything? No, Mr. Banning.
[11:11] Speaker 1: I learned practically nothing at the school, further than what
[11:14] Speaker 1: you told me. You, uh, have the money? I'm getting it, yes.
[11:18] Speaker 1: And you're still determined to pay off Hendren? I'd do
[11:21] Speaker 1: anything to keep my daughter from marrying a blackmailer like Hendren. Yes,
[11:24] Speaker 1: I agree. He doesn't strike me as being the ideal son-in-law. Well,
[11:29] Speaker 1: I'll see you here later tonight, Denny. Uh, Templer, I
[11:32] Speaker 1: know I'm imposing on you. If... if you'd rather not
[11:36] Speaker 1: come tonight... I want to. Men like Hendren have been
[11:38] Speaker 1: known to pull a double cross. In the meantime, I'll
[11:41] Speaker 1: keep on looking. Thank you, Templer. I'll ring for Edward
[11:45] Speaker 1: to show you around. Oh, don't bother.
[11:46] Speaker 7: I can find my way out. I bought a small
[11:48] Speaker 7: road map on my way in. Yes, it is a
[11:51] Speaker 7: large house, isn't it?
[11:53] Speaker 1: Very well. I'll see you tonight. Right-o. Oh, I'm terribly sorry.
[12:07] Speaker 1: That's perfectly all right. It was my fault. I'm glad. Glad?
[12:13] Speaker 1: That we've met. May I ask why? Because I have
[12:16] Speaker 1: something belonging to you. A photograph. A photograph? Yes. You
[12:23] Speaker 1: look quite beautiful in a bathing suit. Oh? And the
[12:27] Speaker 1: man with you looked very much like Gregory Peck. What
[12:31] Speaker 1: do you think we ought to do about it? Oh,
[12:34] Speaker 1: I would suggest talking it over. Over a drink. That
[12:38] Speaker 1: seems basically sound. What'll it be? Ann. Scotch over ice.
[12:55] Speaker 1: Mine's Simon. Two Johnny Walker over ice, waiter. Yes, sir.
[12:59] Speaker 1: About that photograph, Simon. Was there really a photograph, or
[13:03] Speaker 1: can we go on to other things? There really was, unfortunately.
[13:06] Speaker 1: Do you know someone named Tony Hendren, Ann? Perhaps I'd
[13:10] Speaker 1: better look at the photograph first. Here you are. Thank you. Hey. Yes,
[13:16] Speaker 1: I know Tony. It's an old picture, though. I hope
[13:19] Speaker 1: you haven't changed. I don't think so. Two scotches over ice. Oh,
[13:22] Speaker 1: thank you. Well, here's to the eternal verities. The things
[13:27] Speaker 1: that will never change. What was it you wanted to
[13:30] Speaker 1: know about Tony? He's run off with a million dollars.
[13:33] Speaker 1: Are you surprised? Not if it was wearing a skirt.
[13:36] Speaker 1: Do you know Miles Banning? I know him. Would it
[13:39] Speaker 1: surprise you that he's paying $ 200, 000 for Herndon not to
[13:42] Speaker 1: marry his daughter? It wouldn't surprise me, no. Do you
[13:45] Speaker 1: mind if I ask a question about you, Anne? It's
[13:48] Speaker 1: about time, Simon. How do you know Hendren and Banning?
[13:52] Speaker 1: I was the former Mrs. Banning's nurse. Does private nursing
[13:55] Speaker 1: pay well enough for mink? Being a wife does. And
[13:59] Speaker 1: in this case, I earn it. I'm the present Mrs. Banning.
[14:04] Speaker 1: He didn't tell me about you. He wouldn't. You're investigating
[14:08] Speaker 1: Felice and Tony for him? Mm-hmm. In a sense, yes.
[14:11] Speaker 1: I have an appointment. I'm afraid I have to go.
[14:12] Speaker 1: But you haven't finished your drink. Call me any time
[14:15] Speaker 1: you feel like investigating anything. Please. Anything? I want to
[14:20] Speaker 1: see you again. You're very attractive. Goodbye. Goodbye, indeed. Uh,
[14:26] Speaker 1: the lady leaving? You wish to order anything to eat, sir?
[14:29] Speaker 1: Of course. This is my lunch hour, waiter. What'll it be?
[14:32] Speaker 1: Bring me another straight scotch. Ten o'clock. I wonder if
[14:48] Speaker 1: our friend Hendren will come tonight after all, Mr. Bannon.
[14:51] Speaker 1: He'll come. With $ 200, 000 in cash waiting for him, who
[14:54] Speaker 1: wouldn't come? You still determined to give it to him?
[14:56] Speaker 1: What else can I do? I think I'll go out
[14:59] Speaker 1: and have a look around. All right, Templer. I'll keep
[15:02] Speaker 1: an eye on the driveway. If anyone comes, I'll be
[15:04] Speaker 1: close by. Try and get a little rest. I won't
[15:06] Speaker 1: be long. It's a gloomy old place. I wonder what
[15:25] Speaker 1: Ann does for amusement out here. Hey, who's there? Funny.
[15:31] Speaker 1: Thought I heard something evil... Sorry I stepped on you, Kitty.
[15:39] Speaker 1: But you should be more careful. You can see better
[15:41] Speaker 1: out here than I can. In fact, I can't see anything.
[15:45] Speaker 1: Might as well head back for... My head. My poor, beat-on, caved-in,
[16:05] Speaker 1: aching head. Oh, you stuck with me. Thanks, Kitty. Hey,
[16:12] Speaker 1: who hit me? Yeah, I'll never aspire to be the
[16:16] Speaker 1: Robin Hood of modern crime, Kitty. It's very hard on
[16:19] Speaker 1: the skull. I wonder how long I was out. 10, 15?
[16:24] Speaker 1: I'd better get back to... Hey, crime is picking up, Kitty.
[16:30] Speaker 1: Come on. Three shots and not one of them missed.
[16:40] Speaker 1: Who are you? I'm Simon Templer. You're Felice? Yes. You
[16:47] Speaker 1: better go inside. Is it Tony? Is he dead? I'm
[16:50] Speaker 1: afraid he is.
[16:51] Speaker 8: Quick, before the others come. You're the saint, aren't you?
[16:54] Speaker 1: Yes. Promise me you'll find out who killed him. Promise me.
[16:57] Speaker 1: I'll do my best, Felice. You loved him very much? Tony?
[17:03] Speaker 8: I hated him.
[17:05] Speaker 10: I hated him.
[17:17] Speaker 1: All right, everybody here. I won't keep you long, Mr. Banning,
[17:21] Speaker 1: just long enough to get your statement. Mr. Templer, you
[17:23] Speaker 1: said on the phone that you found the body. Yes,
[17:25] Speaker 1: that's right. It's quite simple, Lieutenant. Lieutenant Thompson, isn't it? Yes, sir.
[17:29] Speaker 11: Well, my wife and I and my daughter were upstairs
[17:32] Speaker 11: when we heard the shots. I came down and found
[17:34] Speaker 11: the safe open and a large sum of cash missing.
[17:37] Speaker 1: How large?
[17:37] Speaker 11: $ 200, 000. Templer then came in and told me a man
[17:41] Speaker 11: had been shot. And I found it was a man
[17:44] Speaker 11: named Hendron who used to work for me. Apparently, he
[17:46] Speaker 11: and a confederate opened a safe, quarreled over the money,
[17:49] Speaker 11: and Hendron got shot.
[17:51] Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. That check with you, Mrs. Banning? That's all I
[17:54] Speaker 1: know about it, yes. So you see there's no point
[17:56] Speaker 1: in carrying on this discussion any further. Oh, just a minute, Mr. Banning.
[17:58] Speaker 1: I appreciate your motives, but after all, a man's been
[18:01] Speaker 1: killed here tonight. The lieutenant is entitled to a more
[18:04] Speaker 1: complete explanation than that. Very well, but.
[18:08] Speaker 11: I'd like to ask if my daughter could go to
[18:11] Speaker 11: her room. She's had a bad shock.
[18:12] Speaker 1: Certainly, Mr.
[18:13] Speaker 6: Banning.
[18:14] Speaker 1: Go on, Phyllis. I'll be up to see you soon, dear.
[18:16] Speaker 8: All right, Father.
[18:22] Speaker 11: What I told you, Lieutenant, was not quite all. Though
[18:25] Speaker 11: in principle, thoroughly correct. The truth is, my daughter had
[18:31] Speaker 11: run off with Hendren.
[18:32] Speaker 1: I agreed to pay him $ 200, 000 to bring her back.
[18:37] Speaker 1: You saw him tonight, Mr.
[18:39] Speaker 2: Banning?
[18:39] Speaker 1: He came here, yes. I paid him the money and
[18:42] Speaker 1: he left. I never saw him again. Mr. Templer, were
[18:47] Speaker 1: you with Mr. Banning when he paid him the money?
[18:49] Speaker 1: I'm sorry to say that I was unconscious at the time.
[18:51] Speaker 11: Lieutenant, I hardly need point out how desirous I am
[18:55] Speaker 11: of having my daughter's name kept out of this.
[18:57] Speaker 1: Oh, I'll do my best, Mr.
[18:58] Speaker 6: Banning.
[18:58] Speaker 1: I'm a father myself. Thank you. I'll be grateful. I'll
[19:02] Speaker 1: be very grateful. And, uh... Now, could we go to
[19:06] Speaker 1: our rooms? I'm afraid I feel a little... Of course.
[19:08] Speaker 1: I'm sorry I kept you this long. Well, I understand
[19:10] Speaker 1: that's your job. Come, dear. Good night, gentlemen. You won't
[19:14] Speaker 1: mind if we look around, Mrs. Banning? Of course not.
[19:17] Speaker 1: Please ring if you want anything. Certainly, Mrs. Banning. Don't
[19:20] Speaker 1: you worry about us. No, don't worry about us, Mrs.
[19:22] Speaker 7: Banning.
[19:23] Speaker 1: Good night. Good night. Well, Lieutenant... Oh, I.
[19:30] Speaker 7: Don't doubt that Hendren did have someone else in with
[19:33] Speaker 7: him on this blackmail scheme, and then he knocked him off.
[19:36] Speaker 1: It looks pretty simple. And if you believe that, you'll
[19:39] Speaker 1: look pretty simple. What do you mean? The killer is
[19:41] Speaker 1: a mysterious intruder seen by no one. It's logical.
[19:45] Speaker 7: Look, Templer, Banning's a big man in this town. Now,
[19:50] Speaker 7: how long it takes to work up from pounding a
[19:52] Speaker 7: beat to a detective lieutenant? Fifteen years. Now, how long
[19:55] Speaker 7: it takes to go back to a beat? Fifteen minutes.
[19:59] Speaker 1: So, I'm buying his story until I find out it's wrong.
[20:02] Speaker 1: Fair enough, Lieutenant. Can I go along for the ride? Oh, sure, sure.
[20:05] Speaker 1: We'll start checking tomorrow. Meet me back here at ten
[20:08] Speaker 1: in the morning. Good. I've got a few questions I'd
[20:10] Speaker 1: like to ask Miss Banning. A couple of things I'd
[20:12] Speaker 1: like to ask Mrs. Banning, too. Lieutenant, get a grip
[20:16] Speaker 1: on yourself. Remember, you're a family man.
[20:28] Speaker 11: I am most happy to answer any questions. And so
[20:31] Speaker 11: is my daughter.
[20:33] Speaker 1: Aren't you, dear? Yes, Father. Mrs. Banning will be down soon?
[20:36] Speaker 11: Unfortunately, Lieutenant, Mrs. Banning is indisposed this morning.
[20:40] Speaker 1: Oh. However, she knows nothing of the affair. Could we
[20:42] Speaker 1: ask Felice a few questions alone, Mr. Banning? Felice? No, Father.
[20:47] Speaker 8: I'd rather you stayed with me.
[20:49] Speaker 1: Oh, very well. Felice, did you come back to the
[20:52] Speaker 1: house with Hendren last night, and was there anyone with him?
[20:56] Speaker 11: Felice came back early in the evenings. She was still
[20:58] Speaker 11: obstinate about marrying Hendren, so I still had to.
[21:01] Speaker 1: Deal with him. You were in love with this Hendren,
[21:03] Speaker 1: Miss Banning? Yes, she was. Just a minute. Now, let
[21:05] Speaker 1: Felice answer, Mr.
[21:06] Speaker 3: Banning.
[21:07] Speaker 1: Were you in love with Hendren, Felice?
[21:09] Speaker 8: Father told you I was.
[21:10] Speaker 1: And you were?
[21:11] Speaker 8: If he told you, I was.
[21:12] Speaker 1: Anything further, gentlemen? Do you know where Hendren lived, Felice? Father?
[21:17] Speaker 1: Go ahead, dear.
[21:19] Speaker 8: In a rooming house, 312 Main Street.
[21:22] Speaker 1: Oh, now we're getting somewhere. Let's go, Templer. I hope
[21:24] Speaker 1: you find Hendren's confederate lieutenant. I hope you find him.
[21:28] Speaker 11: And if you recover the money, there'll be a liberal.
[21:31] Speaker 1: Reward in it for you. Thank you, Mr. Banning. We'll
[21:34] Speaker 1: be in touch. Good day, Mr. Banning. Felice. Goodbye, gentlemen. Goodbye, Mr. Templer.
[21:39] Speaker 7: Oh, do you hear that? Might be in for a
[21:45] Speaker 7: big reward if we recover the 200 grand. Lieutenant, stick
[21:48] Speaker 7: to the Irish sweepstakes. The odds are much more in
[21:51] Speaker 7: your favor.
[22:01] Speaker 12: Hendren, sure I know him.
[22:03] Speaker 10: Owes me six weeks' rent, the dirty.
[22:05] Speaker 1: Easy there, mother. Speak not ill of the dead. He's dead? Very.
[22:09] Speaker 1: Got himself shot last night.
[22:11] Speaker 4: Shot?
[22:11] Speaker 12: Ain't that just my luck? That's three I lost that
[22:15] Speaker 12: way this month.
[22:16] Speaker 1: Oh, well, you'll find months like that.
[22:18] Speaker 12: They put a ceiling on rents. Why don't they put
[22:20] Speaker 12: a ceiling on how many deadbeat tenants can get.
[22:22] Speaker 10: Shot in a month?
[22:24] Speaker 12: I ought to write my congressman if I could write.
[22:26] Speaker 1: Choke back your tears for a moment, dear heart and
[22:29] Speaker 1: gentle person. What did you know about Hendren? Did he
[22:32] Speaker 1: have any friends?
[22:33] Speaker 7: Him?
[22:34] Speaker 12: Who'd be a friend of his, that dirty no-go?
[22:37] Speaker 2: Yes.
[22:38] Speaker 1: Now, let's start again. Nothing you can tell us about
[22:40] Speaker 1: him at all?
[22:41] Speaker 12: Nothing except he came to me two months ago saying
[22:44] Speaker 12: he was coming into $ 10, 000, wanted to borrow a tin spot.
[22:48] Speaker 1: Did you lend it to him? Ha!
[22:50] Speaker 12: Two weeks ago, he had a story he was going
[22:53] Speaker 12: to get $ 200, 000 instead of $ 10, 000. He said he'd pay
[22:56] Speaker 12: me double my back rent.
[22:58] Speaker 1: What did you do?
[22:59] Speaker 12: Locked his trunk in the basement, that's what. Much good
[23:03] Speaker 12: it did me, nothing in it but hair oil and
[23:05] Speaker 12: mustache wax. Tell me, what am I gonna do with
[23:09] Speaker 12: mustache wax?
[23:10] Speaker 1: Well, you might wax your mustache.
[23:12] Speaker 7: What?
[23:13] Speaker 8: Why, you.
[23:14] Speaker 3: Well, I searched his room, but I say I.
[23:16] Speaker 1: Lieutenant, have you got a date for tonight? Why? Because
[23:19] Speaker 1: I want to make one for you. Business or pleasure?
[23:22] Speaker 1: The successful man is the man who combines both. Be
[23:25] Speaker 1: at my apartment around nine, will you? I may need you.
[23:27] Speaker 1: What kind of girls do you go out with? A
[23:30] Speaker 1: good policeman, Lieutenant, is theoretically able to cope with any
[23:33] Speaker 1: foreseeable emergency. Good evening, Simon. Oh, come in, Anne. So
[23:50] Speaker 1: glad you could come. So glad you called me. My,
[23:54] Speaker 1: candlelight and champagne. How exciting. May I take your wrap? Please.
[24:01] Speaker 1: You're so tall, Simon. Can you unbend? I can try.
[24:10] Speaker 1: Thank you. And you dropped my wrap, Simon. Dropped it
[24:13] Speaker 1: right on the floor. Don't you dare pick it up.
[24:15] Speaker 1: I wasn't thinking of picking it up. I wasn't thinking
[24:18] Speaker 1: about it at all. What were you thinking of, Simon?
[24:21] Speaker 1: Tell me. Go on. Tell her, Simon. Tell her. Oh,
[24:27] Speaker 1: good evening, Banning. Miles, did you follow me again... Don't
[24:30] Speaker 1: you ever get tired? I get more tired than I
[24:32] Speaker 1: can tell you. That's why it's not going to happen again, Ann.
[24:36] Speaker 1: I mean it. You're a pretty pitiful object. I'm warning you, Ann.
[24:39] Speaker 1: Put that gun away, Banning. You'd never shoot her. No. No,
[24:43] Speaker 1: I couldn't.
[24:44] Speaker 11: But that doesn't apply to you, Templer. You're too smart anyway.
[24:48] Speaker 11: I was against involving you in this from the beginning.
[24:51] Speaker 11: You'll remember I argued against it, Ann.
[24:53] Speaker 1: You'll remember I... Shut up. You're talking too much now.
[24:55] Speaker 1: Don't be ridiculous. He's got us figured out anyway. Why
[24:58] Speaker 1: do you think he asked you here if it wasn't
[25:00] Speaker 1: to trap us? Why do you think? I... I don't
[25:03] Speaker 1: want you to say it. Stand away from him. Easy, Banning.
[25:06] Speaker 1: You haven't got a chance.
[25:07] Speaker 8: No?
[25:08] Speaker 1: No? You're the one who hasn't a chance. You're the one.
[25:12] Speaker 1: Now he gives us repartee. Put down the gun, Miles,
[25:14] Speaker 1: and let's get out of here. No, no, no. No,
[25:16] Speaker 1: we can't. We can't leave him here. He'd turn us in.
[25:19] Speaker 1: Keep me out of this, please. You see? I can't
[25:22] Speaker 1: leave him here. You both gang up against me. I'm
[25:25] Speaker 1: afraid it's pretty much up with you anyway, Mr.
[25:28] Speaker 3: Banning.
[25:29] Speaker 1: You killed Hendren, didn't you? Well, what if I did?
[25:31] Speaker 1: He was double-crossing me. The two of them were. He
[25:34] Speaker 1: and Ann. Yes. You were to give him $ 10, 000 for
[25:37] Speaker 1: his part in it, and he and Ann decided to
[25:39] Speaker 1: take the whole $ 200, 000. Money from Felice's estate. Well, I
[25:43] Speaker 1: had to take the money from her estate. Ann would
[25:45] Speaker 1: have left me. She said so. She kept goading me.
[25:47] Speaker 1: So you rigged up this blackmail story so you'd have
[25:50] Speaker 1: an excuse to take the money. Later, if you were
[25:53] Speaker 1: called to account as trustee of the estate or trust fund,
[25:56] Speaker 1: I would be a witness that the money was spent
[25:58] Speaker 1: on behalf of police. Neat.
[26:00] Speaker 11: I didn't know until last night Anne was really planning
[26:03] Speaker 11: to go away with him.
[26:03] Speaker 1: I shot him. I had to. I had to keep her.
[26:07] Speaker 1: You better give me the gun, Banning. No, no. Everything
[26:09] Speaker 1: will be all right. You're the only one who knows.
[26:11] Speaker 1: It'll be all right, Anne. You'll see. It'll be all right. Now,
[26:15] Speaker 1: stand away from him. The police are on their way, Mr. Banning.
[26:18] Speaker 1: In fact, the door is opening now. No, you don't.
[26:21] Speaker 1: That's an... Old trick, Templer, and I'm not falling for it.
[26:24] Speaker 1: I'm not. Let go of my arm. Father, don't. Give
[26:29] Speaker 1: me that gun, Banning. All right, drop it. Drop it,
[26:32] Speaker 1: I said. Oh, thanks for dropping in, Lieutenant. My arm.
[26:35] Speaker 10: Miles, you hurt me.
[26:37] Speaker 1: Anne. Anne, I didn't mean it. I didn't mean it.
[26:40] Speaker 1: Get away from her, Banning. Now, let me look. Flesh
[26:44] Speaker 1: wound bad, but not too bad. I didn't mean to, Anne.
[26:48] Speaker 1: I didn't mean to. Felice hit my arm. It wasn't me.
[26:51] Speaker 7: Father.
[26:51] Speaker 1: I swear I didn't mean to. I swear it, Dad. Father.
[26:54] Speaker 1: Take Felice out of here, will you, Lieutenant? Come on,
[26:56] Speaker 1: Miss Banning. This is no place for you. No, please.
[26:58] Speaker 8: I want to stay with my father.
[27:01] Speaker 1: I want to.
[27:03] Speaker 9: Stay with my father.
[27:09] Speaker 1: Felice, thank you for what you did. You might have
[27:18] Speaker 1: saved my life.
[27:19] Speaker 8: I didn't do anything.
[27:20] Speaker 1: Why, of course you did.
[27:21] Speaker 7: If you hadn't grabbed your father's arm, deflected his aim, Mr.
[27:24] Speaker 1: Templer might have been killed.
[27:26] Speaker 8: I didn't touch father.
[27:27] Speaker 1: Felice, you.
[27:28] Speaker 8: Father shot her. He aimed at her and he shot her.
[27:32] Speaker 8: I didn't touch him. He realized how bad she was.
[27:37] Speaker 8: And he hated her. He shot her. He doesn't love
[27:41] Speaker 8: her anymore. He only loves me.
[27:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, but Miss Banning... Oh, let her alone, Lieutenant. If
[27:48] Speaker 1: this gives her any comfort, let her go on convincing herself.
[27:53] Speaker 1: She's going to need all the comfort she can get
[27:55] Speaker 1: with what's to come. Feel like a drink, Lieutenant? Don't
[28:10] Speaker 1: mind if I do.
[28:10] Speaker 7: It's one case I was glad to get rid of.
[28:14] Speaker 1: Made me feel kind of unclean. Banning wasn't a very
[28:18] Speaker 1: nice person, I'm afraid. Or Anne, or Hendren. He had
[28:21] Speaker 1: his daughter convinced, though. Yes, he did.
[28:24] Speaker 7: Banning may have been all right at one time. Yeah,
[28:26] Speaker 7: what happened to him? He got afraid, I guess. Afraid
[28:30] Speaker 7: of losing his youth. That's what Anne represented. And afraid
[28:35] Speaker 7: of losing his money, which she spent for him faster
[28:38] Speaker 7: than he could make it. Doesn't pay to get afraid, Lieutenant.
[28:41] Speaker 1: Oh, I guess not. Uh... Here's to not being afraid.
[28:47] Speaker 1: Here's to not being afraid. Yeah, but, uh, how do
[28:52] Speaker 1: you keep from it? Hmm, you stave it off from
[28:55] Speaker 1: one minute to the next. Another drink for the next
[28:59] Speaker 1: minute's fear? By all means. By all means.
[29:15] Speaker 4: You've been listening to another transcribed adventure of The Saint,
[29:17] Speaker 4: the Robin Hood of modern crime. Now here's our star,
[29:20] Speaker 4: Vincent Price.
[29:24] Speaker 1: In tonight's cast, you heard Peggy Weber, Gloria McMillan, Maggie Morley,
[29:29] Speaker 1: Ted Osborne, Theodore Von Eltz, and Larry Dobkin. This is
[29:33] Speaker 1: Vincent Price inviting you to join us again next week
[29:35] Speaker 1: at this same time for another exciting adventure of The Saint.
[29:40] Speaker 1: Good night.
[29:45] Speaker 8: The Saint.
[29:56] Speaker 4: Tonight's script of The Saint was written by Dick Powell,
[29:58] Speaker 4: Don Stanley speaking. Three chimes mean good times on NBC.
[30:01] Speaker 4: Today's the day for the premiere of NBC's gigantic Sunday
[30:04] Speaker 4: afternoon broadcast, The Big Show. Every Sunday afternoon starting today,
[30:08] Speaker 4: you'll hear an hour and a half of the greatest
[30:09] Speaker 4: stars in radio. Performers like Fred Allen, Jimmy Durante, Ethel Merman,
[30:13] Speaker 4: Frankie Lane, Meredith Wilson, and many, many more.
[30:16] Speaker 1: It's The Big Show on NBC.
[30:28] Speaker 2: Welcome back! Well, I definitely felt bad for Felice at
[30:32] Speaker 2: the end. He had been raiding her trust fund, but
[30:38] Speaker 2: all she really wanted at the end of the day.
[30:40] Speaker 1: Was his love.
[30:41] Speaker 2: And it was a nice little philosophical conclusion at the end,
[30:46] Speaker 2: without being too overbearing. I think very well handled and
[30:50] Speaker 2: delivered by Vincent Price. Now, I also found the segment
[30:55] Speaker 2: with Barbara.
[30:57] Speaker 2: Offering her opinions on Felice to be intriguing. It was
[31:04] Speaker 2: a very topical joke about her having read Dianetics so
[31:11] Speaker 2: that she could go around fixing her friends. Dianetics had
[31:16] Speaker 2: actually come out six months before and was a bit
[31:19] Speaker 2: of a pop culture sensation. It also taught that the
[31:26] Speaker 2: principles in the book could be learned and practiced by
[31:30] Speaker 2: ordinary people on each other. And so, yeah, she could
[31:34] Speaker 2: read it and said, yeah, I could straighten out my friends.
[31:37] Speaker 2: And the saint references Mary Worth, who was the lead
[31:41] Speaker 2: character in a comic strip, much like a soap opera,
[31:48] Speaker 2: who gave out life advice, often unsolicited life advice, on
[31:54] Speaker 2: someone that not someone that Simon would like to hang
[31:59] Speaker 2: around with. Now, I was not surprised that Peggy Webber
[32:05] Speaker 2: was listed in the cast after a recent special because
[32:12] Speaker 2: that irritable landlady sounded a whole lot like Joe Friday's mom.
[32:19] Speaker 2: Maybe it's a relation. All right, listener comments and feedback,
[32:24] Speaker 2: and just have a thank you regarding the Saint episode
[32:31] Speaker 2: dossier on a dog gone dog posted to YouTube. Well,
[32:36] Speaker 2: thanks so much. Now it's time to thank our Patreon
[32:41] Speaker 2: supporter of the day. Thank you to Ben, Patreon supporter

[32:54] Speaker 2: much for your support, Ben. And that will do it

[33:08] Speaker 2: will be back next Monday with another episode of The Saint,
[33:11] Speaker 2: but join us back here tomorrow for the big story where.
[33:16] Speaker 3: Sheriff, there's something funny about these three men.
[33:20] Speaker 1: What do you mean, Don?
[33:21] Speaker 3: Oh, I don't know. I can't explain it exactly, but
[33:26] Speaker 3: the way they act, their clothes.
[33:28] Speaker 1: What's the matter with them?
[33:29] Speaker 3: Well, that's just it. They're all dressed up as though
[33:31] Speaker 3: they were going to some fancy summer resort. They'll look
[33:34] Speaker 3: like fishermen to me.
[33:35] Speaker 1: Now, look, Don.
[33:36] Speaker 6: Their car is right out front. You take a look
[33:39] Speaker 6: in the back. You'll see it's loaded with fishing equipment.
[33:42] Speaker 7: Yeah?
[33:43] Speaker 3: I still don't believe it. I'll bet they don't even
[33:45] Speaker 3: have fishing licenses.
[33:46] Speaker 1: You're wrong, son.
[33:48] Speaker 3: I am?
[33:48] Speaker 9: Hmm?
[33:49] Speaker 3: The minute they came in, I asked for their papers.
[33:52] Speaker 1: Each of them had a fishing license. All in order.
[33:55] Speaker 3: Each of them had an identification paper.
[33:58] Speaker 1: They were all in.
[33:58] Speaker 3: Order, too.
[33:59] Speaker 1: Oh, I see.
[34:01] Speaker 6: Now, why don't you forget it and let me take
[34:03] Speaker 6: care of this, huh? I call the phone company. They'll
[34:06] Speaker 6: have a man over here in a few hours.
[34:08] Speaker 1: The rest is just routine.
[34:10] Speaker 3: You mean after they pay the damages, you'll let them go?
[34:12] Speaker 10: Naturally.
[34:14] Speaker 1: What else can I hold them for?
[34:16] Speaker 2: Well, you'll be with us then. In the meantime, send
