[3:05] Speaker 4: Anything wrong, Captain, nothing serious, mister Templar, just coming down
[3:09] Speaker 4: here for a check.
[3:10] Speaker 5: Go on just as soon as we can.
[3:11] Speaker 2: Oh and uh, where is here?
[3:13] Speaker 4: Headstone, New Mexico used to be a big silver mining town,
[3:17] Speaker 4: but not just another little town, I guess, although I
[3:20] Speaker 4: did notice there's a carnival playing over on the edge
[3:22] Speaker 4: of this emergency landing strip.
[3:23] Speaker 2: Well, how long are we to enjoy the hospitality of Headstone?
[3:27] Speaker 6: Oh?
[3:27] Speaker 4: Two or three hours? Long enough to see the town
[3:29] Speaker 4: have dinner if you like. Sorry to delay you, sir.
[3:32] Speaker 2: Oh, it's all right, Captain. I'm seldom bored in a
[3:35] Speaker 2: strange town.
[3:36] Speaker 4: Well, you better go back and fasten your seat belt.
[3:38] Speaker 5: Mitter templar.
[3:38] Speaker 2: We're coming down now, right, I'll see you later. Well,
[3:58] Speaker 2: good evening, Saint. Yet I don't seem to record your face.
[4:03] Speaker 7: Harry Kelly, and you don't recall my face because we've
[4:06] Speaker 7: never met. But I've seen many pictures of you, and
[4:08] Speaker 7: so I recognize your meeting.
[4:09] Speaker 2: Well that's very flattering. Tell me, mister Kelly, how can
[4:12] Speaker 2: I get into town?
[4:13] Speaker 7: You can find a cab on the other side of
[4:15] Speaker 7: the carnife planning on staying long, Not at all should I.
[4:21] Speaker 7: On the contrary, I was just going to suggest that
[4:23] Speaker 7: I doubt if Heedstone would welcome.
[4:25] Speaker 2: The presence of the saint.
[4:26] Speaker 7: Just a friendly remark, you understand.
[4:29] Speaker 2: Oh naturally, And if I may be permitted, a friendly question.
[4:32] Speaker 2: Why are you telling me this?
[4:34] Speaker 7: Just an interest in the continued health of my fellow humans.
[4:37] Speaker 7: If you have any trouble in town, look me up.
[4:39] Speaker 7: Anyone can tell you where to find.
[4:42] Speaker 3: Me.
[4:42] Speaker 8: Chow is just about to start. See little Fatima, the
[4:46] Speaker 8: girl who shakes and shivers like a bowl pull of jelly.
[4:49] Speaker 8: Only one dime ten cents. The tenth part of a dollar.
[4:53] Speaker 2: Hurry, hurry the stars for you.
[4:58] Speaker 9: I read the past, the present, and the future. Learn
[5:02] Speaker 9: your fortune, young man, I already know it, Grandmother, I'm
[5:06] Speaker 9: destined to meet a tall, dark and beautiful woman.
[5:09] Speaker 2: I'll settle for nothing.
[5:10] Speaker 9: Less I see strange lines on your face. Young man,
[5:15] Speaker 9: I will tell your fortune without charge.
[5:18] Speaker 10: Give me your hand. I see danger. Beware of a
[5:23] Speaker 10: blonde young woman. She will bring you.
[5:26] Speaker 2: Death, the worse ways of dying.
[5:29] Speaker 9: Grandmother, I see danger, much danger for one with a
[5:33] Speaker 9: halo about his head, blood and death unless he travels.
[5:39] Speaker 10: I see I.
[5:40] Speaker 2: Bek I'm beginning to get the idea. You might tell
[5:43] Speaker 2: your crystal ball that I'm beginning to be interested. Goodbye, grandmother,
[5:47] Speaker 2: and may the saints bless you. Taxi mister, oh thank you? Say?
[5:57] Speaker 2: Do you suppose you can drive me somewhere that serves
[6:00] Speaker 2: a good dinner? Sure?
[6:03] Speaker 11: Silver Dollar Hotel?
[6:04] Speaker 6: Oh you know, I was just sitting there a communing
[6:08] Speaker 6: with nature about how many guys there are who blow
[6:11] Speaker 6: their want to watch some dame do a holder or
[6:14] Speaker 6: won't spend a dime on a hack?
[6:15] Speaker 2: Do I detect a touch of Brooklyn? How could you miss?
[6:19] Speaker 2: That's me?
[6:20] Speaker 6: Chu'm ziggy from flat Push. I used to drive a
[6:23] Speaker 6: hack in Brooklyn. Now I own the only hack in Headstone.
[6:26] Speaker 6: It's like, you know, I ain't seen a Brooklyn bridge
[6:30] Speaker 6: for ten years since I come out here for my health.
[6:34] Speaker 6: Like I always say, it's a smart man who knows
[6:37] Speaker 6: when it's healthy to get out of town.
[6:39] Speaker 11: Meaning what does everything have to mean?
[6:41] Speaker 3: Something?
[6:43] Speaker 2: May I mind my own business? I stay healthy.
[6:46] Speaker 8: That's why I'm living in Headstone instead.
[6:48] Speaker 2: Of underwe I see. But if you didn't mind your
[6:51] Speaker 2: own business, I suppose you'd give me some advice about
[6:53] Speaker 2: leaving Headstone. Is that it? No? No advice man.
[6:58] Speaker 6: That's part of minding my own busin Headstone is a
[7:01] Speaker 6: great place for strangers to.
[7:03] Speaker 11: Visit if they paid up their insurance.
[7:19] Speaker 2: Here you are, waiter, very nice dinner, my check please? No, no, no,
[7:23] Speaker 2: thank you keep the change.
[7:28] Speaker 10: Hello.
[7:29] Speaker 2: Well, well this is a surprising hotel. First a beautiful
[7:32] Speaker 2: dinner and then an even more beautiful blonde.
[7:35] Speaker 10: May I sit down?
[7:36] Speaker 2: By all means?
[7:37] Speaker 1: Miss Verty?
[7:38] Speaker 10: Calmly, you're Simon template.
[7:40] Speaker 2: M I should have worn my dark glasses. But now
[7:42] Speaker 2: that the truth is out, you might as well call
[7:45] Speaker 2: me Simon. All right, Simon, Now, how did you know
[7:48] Speaker 2: who I am. Now, don't tell me that you were
[7:50] Speaker 2: just passing and recognized me.
[7:51] Speaker 10: Woy. Ziggy told me that you were here. He owns
[7:54] Speaker 10: and drives the taxi here in Headstone.
[7:55] Speaker 2: I know I shouldn't look a gift blonde in the hair,
[7:58] Speaker 2: But why did Ziggy take I was in here?
[8:01] Speaker 10: Well, Ziggy knows that I need help, and he thought
[8:03] Speaker 10: that is, since you're the saint, you might help me.
[8:07] Speaker 8: Well.
[8:07] Speaker 2: I have been known to help beautiful blonds on occasion.
[8:11] Speaker 2: But tell me why you should need help, Betty.
[8:16] Speaker 10: Someone's been trying to kill me.
[8:17] Speaker 2: Oh, there should be a law against that. Are you sure?
[8:19] Speaker 10: I've been shot at twice and everybody here has been
[8:23] Speaker 10: very unfriendly except Ziggy and a man named Harry Kelly.
[8:27] Speaker 2: I've noticed the unfriendliness in this town, but being unfriendly
[8:30] Speaker 2: towards you is obviously an indication of insanity.
[8:34] Speaker 10: Please don't joke about it.
[8:35] Speaker 2: I'm frightened all right now tell me about it.
[8:39] Speaker 10: Well, my father was known as silver Slim Conley. He
[8:43] Speaker 10: lived here for years, but he sent me east to
[8:45] Speaker 10: school when I was very young, and I didn't come
[8:48] Speaker 10: back here until recently. My father died about a month ago.
[8:51] Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry.
[8:52] Speaker 10: He was broke and all he left me was his
[8:55] Speaker 10: old silver mine. He called it the Betty mine after me, and.
[8:59] Speaker 2: I take it. Somebody wants the mine.
[9:01] Speaker 10: No, no, the mine is completely worthless. There hasn't been
[9:04] Speaker 10: any silver in it for years.
[9:06] Speaker 2: But my dear, you were shot at twice. Have you
[9:09] Speaker 2: any idea who did the shooting?
[9:11] Speaker 10: No, but it might be the same man who told
[9:13] Speaker 10: me to get out of town. Oh, Mike McCarthy. Ziggy
[9:17] Speaker 10: says he's an Eastern gangster who has been living out
[9:19] Speaker 10: here for several months. Will you help me, mister Simon, Well.
[9:24] Speaker 2: I've never been able to say no to a pretty girl.
[9:27] Speaker 2: You mentioned a man named Harry Kelly before. Just who
[9:30] Speaker 2: is he?
[9:30] Speaker 10: He knew my father. He's been very friendly to me,
[9:33] Speaker 10: although he thought I ought to leave town too.
[9:36] Speaker 2: I've met mister Kelly and he intrigues me very much.
[9:39] Speaker 2: I think we'll go see all right.
[9:43] Speaker 10: Oh just a minute, there was some red dust on
[9:46] Speaker 10: your coat.
[9:47] Speaker 2: Oh thank you. ZIGGI apparently doesn't get enough passengers to
[9:50] Speaker 2: keep his cab dusted. Did you say Ziggy was parked
[9:56] Speaker 2: outside in his chain?
[9:58] Speaker 10: He was when I came in.
[10:00] Speaker 2: Oh, there he is, Yes, looking exactly as if he
[10:02] Speaker 2: were back in Brooklyn. Ziggy, Oh, so she fun thanks
[10:07] Speaker 2: to your bird dogging, which I must admit in this
[10:10] Speaker 2: case has done much to overcome any natural prejudice against
[10:13] Speaker 2: cab divers that I might have. Say, do you know
[10:15] Speaker 2: where Harry Kelly lives? Sure? And let's go there. Hey,
[10:20] Speaker 2: don't you ever clean out this? Heck? What's all this dust?
[10:23] Speaker 8: Who knows?
[10:24] Speaker 2: Maybe it was that redhead that hired me yesterday? So
[10:27] Speaker 2: she had the andros Ziggy, you missed your calling. You're
[10:30] Speaker 2: as funny as an undertaker. Well, now, Ziggy, I don't
[10:35] Speaker 2: suppose you'd care to tell me why you warned me
[10:38] Speaker 2: to get out of Headstone? Got me all wrong saying
[10:42] Speaker 2: I wasn't warning you.
[10:43] Speaker 11: I was just talking about myself.
[10:45] Speaker 2: And I don't suppose you'd care to tell me why
[10:46] Speaker 2: somebody took pot shots at missus Connolly here and told
[10:49] Speaker 2: her to get out of town too.
[10:51] Speaker 11: Me, I don't know nothing, like I was telling you, saying.
[10:54] Speaker 2: I mind my own business.
[10:56] Speaker 6: Maybe you stay ignorant that way, but it's healthier and
[11:00] Speaker 6: I like it like that.
[11:01] Speaker 2: And in that case, why did you send miss Connelly
[11:03] Speaker 2: in to see me?
[11:04] Speaker 5: Well?
[11:04] Speaker 11: Like you can see she's a pretty little pigeon.
[11:07] Speaker 2: She needs to know some guy will help her.
[11:09] Speaker 6: Now, it ain't no secret that the saint goes around
[11:12] Speaker 6: mixing and other people's business.
[11:13] Speaker 5: So I tell her to see you?
[11:15] Speaker 2: And who told you? I was the same?
[11:17] Speaker 6: I got eyes in my head, Ain't I like I said?
[11:20] Speaker 8: I used to hack in Brooklyn? I got a wrong?
[11:23] Speaker 12: Uh?
[11:24] Speaker 8: What about this?
[11:24] Speaker 6: Mike mccott strictly smart money, saying, huh, A lot of
[11:28] Speaker 6: guys have crossed his.
[11:29] Speaker 5: Path once you get what I mean?
[11:32] Speaker 2: What about uh, Harry Kelly? Eh, local stuff, nice, small,
[11:38] Speaker 2: but no more. You're doing all right for a guy
[11:41] Speaker 2: that doesn't know anything. You got me wrong, pal, Ziggy.
[11:46] Speaker 6: He looks people over, but he don't see nothing except
[11:48] Speaker 6: one guy is tough, another guy is small, and maybe
[11:52] Speaker 6: another guy is too knows.
[11:53] Speaker 10: I really don't think we should try to involve Ziggy Simon.
[11:56] Speaker 10: He's been very nice as it is.
[11:58] Speaker 6: She's got something, Paul, I ain't really equipped for it,
[12:01] Speaker 6: because the way you are headed.
[12:04] Speaker 13: Only a saint would feel at home. Well, here we
[12:19] Speaker 13: are saying Kelly lives on the first floor in the room.
[12:22] Speaker 2: Oh thanks, wait for it, Ziggy, We've got a couple
[12:26] Speaker 2: of other calls to make after this, So Lorry, I'll wait.
[12:29] Speaker 6: You get any trouble, just yell, then I'll drive over
[12:32] Speaker 6: and tell the sheriff.
[12:33] Speaker 2: I heard somebody yell. Thanks. Now come on, Betty, and
[12:38] Speaker 2: I hope our friend is in and that he talked.
[12:41] Speaker 10: Yes, it's strange. How are I telling you to come
[12:44] Speaker 10: and see him? If you had any trouble, if you
[12:46] Speaker 10: had any connection with me, then why hasn't he said
[12:49] Speaker 10: something to me?
[12:50] Speaker 2: Well? It sounded to me like a cautious man. Maybe
[12:53] Speaker 2: he did know something that didn't want to say anything
[12:55] Speaker 2: unless he felt sure something was going to be done.
[12:58] Speaker 2: I will soon know who is Simon Templer.
[13:02] Speaker 10: Just a minute, Oh, shots were in that room.
[13:07] Speaker 2: This is no time for conversation, Johning.
[13:08] Speaker 14: We're going in like this, Kelly m h oh, Simon, Kelly, Kelly,
[13:17] Speaker 14: this is Simon Templer.
[13:22] Speaker 2: Yes, Kelly, the saint who shot you mine? Kelly? Well, Betty,
[13:42] Speaker 2: he isn't going to tell us anything now. Killer did
[13:45] Speaker 2: a very thorough job. Window open, must have shot from here,
[13:51] Speaker 2: and here's a shell on the fireplace. But what was
[13:54] Speaker 2: he saying sounded like like sin. Come on, Betty, we're
[13:59] Speaker 2: going to spread a little saintliness, and I think I
[14:02] Speaker 2: know where to begin. But Siggy, didn't you hear anything? Well?
[14:16] Speaker 11: I noticed some noise, but like.
[14:18] Speaker 2: I I know, you mind your own business.
[14:20] Speaker 10: Are we going to the Sheriff's Simon?
[14:22] Speaker 2: Not yet, Ziggy? Who's the essayer in this time? All
[14:24] Speaker 2: man Matthews. The office is closed now.
[14:27] Speaker 11: But he lives right ahead there, that big white house.
[14:29] Speaker 2: Okay, stop there. I'd like to satisfy a little curiosity
[14:32] Speaker 2: about that mine of yours. I'll be right back.
[14:37] Speaker 15: You stand here, Betty, What do you want?
[14:54] Speaker 2: Mister Matthews?
[14:55] Speaker 8: Who else should be? Here's my house? In what do
[14:58] Speaker 8: you want?
[14:58] Speaker 2: My name is Simon temp I wanted to ask you
[15:01] Speaker 2: if you know the Connolly silver mine.
[15:03] Speaker 8: I know every mine within two hundred miles to hear
[15:05] Speaker 8: young fellow. Hey, ain't that Betty Connolly's sitting up there
[15:09] Speaker 8: in that taxi?
[15:10] Speaker 2: Yes?
[15:10] Speaker 8: And why can't she tell you about the mine? She
[15:13] Speaker 8: owns it?
[15:13] Speaker 2: Well, she has told me. But I just wanted to
[15:15] Speaker 2: check about the possibility of a mistake. How much silver
[15:18] Speaker 2: would you say there was in the Connolly mine?
[15:21] Speaker 8: About enough to put in your eye and still leave
[15:23] Speaker 8: room for your finger.
[15:24] Speaker 2: Couldn't there be a hidden vein in it?
[15:26] Speaker 8: Nope, there ain't been enough silver around here to make
[15:29] Speaker 8: a dime for years and years.
[15:31] Speaker 2: Could there be anything else of value in it?
[15:33] Speaker 8: Mud and water? If you call that valuable? You sure,
[15:36] Speaker 8: of course, I'm sure, young fellow. I've been here, man
[15:40] Speaker 8: and boy for seventy years, and I ain't got no
[15:42] Speaker 8: time to stand around answer and durn fool questions.
[15:45] Speaker 2: Goodbye, well, goodbye, and Betty, you may be right, oh man,
[15:55] Speaker 2: Matthew says, the mine is worthless too, So Ziggy take
[15:59] Speaker 2: us to see my McCarthy.
[16:01] Speaker 11: Are you sure you want to go there?
[16:02] Speaker 8: Say?
[16:02] Speaker 2: How was you? I get on that plane? It's leaving
[16:04] Speaker 2: pretty soon, No, Zigi, I've decided not to leave Headstone
[16:07] Speaker 2: just yet. Later you can drive me over to Albuquerque
[16:09] Speaker 2: and I'll take the cheap the rest of the way. Okay, charm,
[16:12] Speaker 2: it's your funeral, Simon. Please be careful, don't you worry
[16:30] Speaker 2: Betty the halo whereas Benevolent Association would be very upset
[16:34] Speaker 2: if anything happened to me, I'll be right off. Yeah,
[16:44] Speaker 2: I'm looking for Mike McCarthy where you found him? It's
[16:47] Speaker 2: my boy scout training and never fairs. My name is
[16:50] Speaker 2: Simon Templar, the Saint. I've been known by that name.
[16:54] Speaker 2: So what That's a very interesting question. I must trying
[16:56] Speaker 2: to think of an answer sometime. Meanwhile, I thought you
[16:59] Speaker 2: might I'd like to know that I heartily disapprove of
[17:02] Speaker 2: your telling a certain miss Betty Connolly that she ought
[17:05] Speaker 2: to leave town.
[17:06] Speaker 5: What's the girl to you?
[17:07] Speaker 2: It's my business.
[17:08] Speaker 4: I could make it mine. And if I do, your
[17:10] Speaker 4: halo's going to slip down to start choking you. I
[17:13] Speaker 4: thought bullets were more in your line meaning what?
[17:16] Speaker 2: Meaning? The shots fired at missus Connolly and a little
[17:18] Speaker 2: gunning job only a few minutes ago.
[17:20] Speaker 4: I didn't do any gun and but I'm liable to
[17:22] Speaker 4: if you don't beat it.
[17:23] Speaker 2: And you sound so sure of yourself, Michael.
[17:25] Speaker 4: That's because I got more in my hand than an
[17:28] Speaker 4: itching palm.
[17:29] Speaker 2: It's very pretty gun, Mike. But I'm very much afraid
[17:32] Speaker 2: that nothing will satisfy my curiosity short of knowing why
[17:35] Speaker 2: you want to get miss Connolly out of town.
[17:38] Speaker 4: I got answers for nosy guys, six of them. I
[17:41] Speaker 4: just stand right there, stay away from that death saint
[17:44] Speaker 4: her own.
[17:44] Speaker 2: Worry, Mike, I have no interest in the desk at all.
[17:47] Speaker 2: But I do have an interest in miss Connolly. And now, Michael,
[17:53] Speaker 2: how did you do?
[18:06] Speaker 10: What happens Sila?
[18:07] Speaker 2: Oh not much. I'm afraid the conversation is just getting interesting.
[18:10] Speaker 2: When Mike had a sudden attack of dropsy, that's funny.
[18:13] Speaker 2: I never heard of him being sick. Well, that's because
[18:15] Speaker 2: you mind your own business, Ziggy, Like you tell me
[18:18] Speaker 2: Betty worries that silver mine of.
[18:20] Speaker 10: Yours about two miles out of town.
[18:22] Speaker 2: Is there any place in town where we can rent
[18:24] Speaker 2: a car?
[18:25] Speaker 10: Why I have a car?
[18:26] Speaker 2: What I feel a prospecting urge coming over me. Ziggy
[18:30] Speaker 2: can take us to Miss Connolly's car, and then we
[18:32] Speaker 2: can dispense with your valuable services.
[18:34] Speaker 8: What's wrong with my cure?
[18:35] Speaker 2: Nothing, Ziggy, is just that I don't like people looking
[18:38] Speaker 2: over my shoulder, especially when I visit a lonely mine
[18:42] Speaker 2: in the company of a beautiful girl.
[18:58] Speaker 10: Well, here's the mine, although I don't know why you want.
[19:02] Speaker 2: To see it, Rank, I don't know either, but as
[19:04] Speaker 2: long as I'm here, I might as well take the
[19:06] Speaker 2: forty cent tour.
[19:07] Speaker 10: Certainly, sir, Right this way, this old cable car goes
[19:11] Speaker 10: down into the mine. All we have to do is
[19:13] Speaker 10: stand on the platform and pull the cable. It works
[19:16] Speaker 10: with balanced weights.
[19:17] Speaker 2: Clever these forty nine ers.
[19:18] Speaker 10: How far down on the forty cent tour? We give
[19:21] Speaker 10: the exact distance three hundred and fifty four feet six inches.
[19:25] Speaker 2: Thank you, and thank you for having electric lights in
[19:29] Speaker 2: a mine that hasn't been worked for years.
[19:31] Speaker 10: Oh, the mine has its own battery. See here's a
[19:34] Speaker 10: bulb on the car. Shall we go down?
[19:36] Speaker 2: What are we waiting for? Let's go, Maybe the lights
[19:39] Speaker 2: will go out.
[19:40] Speaker 5: I just told it like that. I've been waiting for you.
[19:42] Speaker 2: Too, well, Michael McCarthy. I was wondering if we were
[19:46] Speaker 2: going to have your company.
[19:47] Speaker 5: And this time was I don't try and it.
[19:49] Speaker 2: Don't tell me, Michael that you're going prospecting with us.
[19:52] Speaker 4: I'm riding down with you, but I'm coming back alone.
[19:56] Speaker 4: Start the car down, saying, but don't try no tricks.
[19:59] Speaker 2: You have a suspicion. Just mind mine. Well, here we go.
[20:03] Speaker 2: Call out your floorers. Please mezzanine ladies, underwear goloshes and excessively.
[20:07] Speaker 5: You'll be singing a different tune pretty soon. Saint. You
[20:10] Speaker 5: both had your chance to leave down your way. Now
[20:13] Speaker 5: you're gonna leave my way.
[20:15] Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry, dog, Betty. This is my first ride
[20:19] Speaker 2: on an open cable car.
[20:20] Speaker 5: It'll be your last.
[20:22] Speaker 2: I wouldn't be too sure unless that cable breaks before
[20:25] Speaker 2: we get to the bottom.
[20:27] Speaker 5: What are you talking about?
[20:32] Speaker 2: Sorry, A little crowded here for one too, so I
[20:36] Speaker 2: guess the one that I have to have to do.
[20:45] Speaker 10: Terrible man.
[20:46] Speaker 2: It's all right, Simon.
[20:49] Speaker 10: It could have been you. He almost knocked you off
[20:52] Speaker 10: the platform.
[20:53] Speaker 2: Two. It was the padded shoulders in my coat. I
[20:57] Speaker 2: helped them hit the side.
[20:59] Speaker 10: Look at your shoulders. You're covered with dirt from the
[21:02] Speaker 10: sides of the sheaf.
[21:03] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's red di Wait a minute, Well, we can
[21:10] Speaker 2: go back up, Betty. Mike doesn't need our help, and
[21:14] Speaker 2: I don't need anybody to answer questions anymore.
[21:30] Speaker 10: Simon. I'll never understand you. Why did you look at
[21:32] Speaker 10: the dirt on your coat and say you didn't need
[21:34] Speaker 10: any more questions?
[21:35] Speaker 2: Because that dirt with red sulfide, Betty, and it explains
[21:38] Speaker 2: why Mike was so anxious to run you out of power.
[21:41] Speaker 10: Well, I don't see how red sulfide is used in paint,
[21:44] Speaker 10: but that doesn't make it valuable.
[21:46] Speaker 2: Red sulfide is also cinnebar or from which we get mercury,
[21:49] Speaker 2: and that is pretty valuable. Evidently your mind is rich
[21:53] Speaker 2: in cinebar so it's worth a lot of money. Betty.
[21:55] Speaker 10: Oh, then that was what Kelly was trying to tell
[21:57] Speaker 10: us when he said sin.
[21:58] Speaker 2: Yes, he was trying to say cineba.
[22:01] Speaker 10: How can I ever thank you? Simon?
[22:03] Speaker 2: Well, I have a couple of ideas on the subject,
[22:07] Speaker 2: but now people would say I was chasing you for
[22:09] Speaker 2: your money. So I guess you can just see me
[22:11] Speaker 2: off on the train. We'll stop in town and have
[22:13] Speaker 2: Ziggy drive us to Albuquerque.
[22:15] Speaker 10: Oh but I'll drive you.
[22:16] Speaker 2: Now, I insist on taking a cab. I don't want
[22:19] Speaker 2: you coming back alone. I may want to change my
[22:22] Speaker 2: mind about fortune hunting.
[22:38] Speaker 11: Like I said, saying, I'm glad to see you leave.
[22:41] Speaker 8: But it's tom just funny about's changes.
[22:43] Speaker 2: You want to take Miss Conley with you, but she
[22:45] Speaker 2: doesn't have to go now Ziggy and decides she's rich.
[22:48] Speaker 10: What Yes, Ziggy, we found out the dead mine is
[22:50] Speaker 10: valuable after all?
[22:52] Speaker 2: You mean you found silver, no mercury. Oh stop, they
[22:56] Speaker 2: put into moment. That's the stuff, Ziggy, But it's used
[22:58] Speaker 2: for a lot of other things. To take in wartime,
[23:01] Speaker 2: and it's worth a.
[23:01] Speaker 3: Lot of money.
[23:02] Speaker 2: What do you know? So that's why Mike was trying
[23:05] Speaker 2: to make you leave. That's it.
[23:06] Speaker 10: Well did you stop and tell the sheriff we didn't
[23:08] Speaker 10: have time, But I'll see him when we go back.
[23:11] Speaker 2: That's pretty nice for you or anybody. Oh here, we are
[23:14] Speaker 2: just in time too the Chief Center. That's very nice timing, Ziggy.
[23:19] Speaker 2: Thanks Betty for keeping my force to visit the Headstone
[23:21] Speaker 2: from being dull.
[23:22] Speaker 10: Oh Simon, Well why don't you stay in Headstone? I
[23:27] Speaker 10: won't know how to run the mine or what to
[23:29] Speaker 10: do with the money or anything.
[23:31] Speaker 2: You'll learn, Betty, you know what to do when you
[23:33] Speaker 2: get back to town.
[23:34] Speaker 10: Yes, But what will the sheriff leave me? I mean
[23:37] Speaker 10: about Mike McCarthy killing Harry Kelly.
[23:39] Speaker 2: I don't think he will, since Mike didn't kill Kelly.
[23:43] Speaker 2: But Kelly was shot with an automatic dejected a shell
[23:46] Speaker 2: on the fireplace. Remember, but Mike McCarthy carried a revolver.
[23:50] Speaker 10: You saw it, Yes, but will the sheriff.
[23:52] Speaker 2: The sheriff will believe when you show him that the
[23:55] Speaker 2: gun that killed Kelly is in Ziggy's pocket.
[23:58] Speaker 8: What what are you talking about?
[24:00] Speaker 2: You knew about the cinnabar or in the mine. You've
[24:02] Speaker 2: carried some of it away to be tested in your cab,
[24:04] Speaker 2: and there was red dust in it, which you tried
[24:06] Speaker 2: to explain with a cornate gag.
[24:08] Speaker 8: You're crazy, Harry.
[24:10] Speaker 2: Kelly had an idea what was going on, so you
[24:12] Speaker 2: slipped around at the back while we were at the
[24:14] Speaker 2: front door and killed him.
[24:15] Speaker 11: All right, wise, guy, you're so smart.
[24:17] Speaker 8: What about Mike.
[24:18] Speaker 2: Mike was working for you.
[24:19] Speaker 10: But silent Zibi told me that you were in town.
[24:22] Speaker 2: Sure he couldn't be sure that I wasn't here to
[24:23] Speaker 2: break up his little scheme, So the smartest thing to
[24:26] Speaker 2: do was to get us together so he could watch
[24:28] Speaker 2: both of us. He thought I would use his cab
[24:30] Speaker 2: as I did, and it would be easy. But he
[24:32] Speaker 2: slipped up when he sent Mike out to the mine
[24:34] Speaker 2: ahead of us. Ziggy was the only one who knew
[24:37] Speaker 2: where we were going. Okay. Plus, like you said, Pad,
[24:46] Speaker 2: you should have followed your own advice about minding your
[24:48] Speaker 2: own business. He's all yours, Beddy. The gun that killed
[24:56] Speaker 2: Kelly is now on the seat beside him. All you
[24:58] Speaker 2: have to do is turn the bar and the gun
[25:00] Speaker 2: over to the sheriff, and from there on in here'll
[25:03] Speaker 2: mind Ziggy's business for him. But don't worry, Daddy, I'll
[25:07] Speaker 2: stop back some day to make sure that Venus is
[25:10] Speaker 2: in conjunction with Mercury.
[25:25] Speaker 3: You have just heard another adventure of the Saint, the
[25:27] Speaker 3: robinhood of modern crime. Ah, here is our starved then,
[25:31] Speaker 3: sat Price.
[25:32] Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, how many times there have been men
[25:35] Speaker 2: just like Ziggy, led into crime by insatiable greed forgetting
[25:39] Speaker 2: the simplest truth. So aptly phrased by John Dryden, murder
[25:42] Speaker 2: may pass untamished for a time, but pardy justice will
[25:46] Speaker 2: overtake the crime. This is Vincent Price extending a personal
[25:49] Speaker 2: invitation to all of you to join us again next
[25:52] Speaker 2: week at the same time for another adventure of the Saints.
[25:55] Speaker 2: Good Night.
[26:08] Speaker 3: Tonight's script of The Saint was written by Michael Kramoy.
[26:11] Speaker 3: Our cast included Harry Bartel Barney Phillips, Colleen Collins, Fred
[26:14] Speaker 3: Howard and Tony Barrett. The music was composed and conducted
[26:17] Speaker 3: by Harry Zimmermann. The Saint is a James L. Saffier
[26:21] Speaker 3: Agency production and was transcribed and directed by Thomas A.
[26:24] Speaker 5: Mcavittie.
[26:25] Speaker 3: Don't forget that the Saint comic books are unsaleed all
[26:27] Speaker 3: news stands. You're announcer Merril Ross. This is the mutual
[26:33] Speaker 3: broadcasting system.
[26:44] Speaker 1: Welcome back. I really enjoy this episode. It's short, but
[26:50] Speaker 1: they get so much in there. The title is great.
[26:55] Speaker 1: It does sound like a Charterous short story even though
[27:01] Speaker 1: it's original to radio. And again great pacing, snappy dialog,
[27:08] Speaker 1: and some very solid turns in the plot. The final
[27:13] Speaker 1: reveal of Ziggy is a bit of a shocker, but
[27:16] Speaker 1: there were clues throughout the story. Now, the evil Brooklyn
[27:21] Speaker 1: Cabby might confuse some who listen to the Saint long
[27:26] Speaker 1: term because the Saint acquires a recurring sidekick who is
[27:33] Speaker 1: a Brooklyn Cabby named Louie, and while their voices are similar,
[27:38] Speaker 1: in the performance, Louie is played by Laurence Stompkin, whereas
[27:45] Speaker 1: Ziggy was played by Tony Barrett, which might also be
[27:49] Speaker 1: familiar to those of you who listen to our Volume
[27:52] Speaker 1: one or Volume two feeds and heard Tony Barrett plane
[27:58] Speaker 1: marked on of it a Brooklyn Cabby who was a
[28:03] Speaker 1: sidekick to Frank Grace. Now, I do want to talk
[28:06] Speaker 1: a little bit about Benson Price in some ways to
[28:11] Speaker 1: go into great detail about Bencent Price and his legacy,
[28:16] Speaker 1: because he's probably one of the better known actors of
[28:21] Speaker 1: his era today, someone whose legacy in the horror genre
[28:27] Speaker 1: makes him recognizable to many people who wouldn't know who
[28:33] Speaker 1: I was talking about if you talk about the best
[28:36] Speaker 1: known actors of the era. But it is fair to
[28:42] Speaker 1: say that Price was not yet that figure. Well he
[28:46] Speaker 1: had done a horror movie. His acting tended to run
[28:52] Speaker 1: a gammut of different films and roles as a character actor,
[28:57] Speaker 1: often playing characters who whose morality could be ambiguous at best.
[29:04] Speaker 1: He played Rishlieu in The Three Musketeers, he had a
[29:09] Speaker 1: role as a murder suspect in Laura, and could often
[29:13] Speaker 1: be a film noir villain, and of course did some
[29:17] Speaker 1: comedies as well. His radio work in the era reflected
[29:21] Speaker 1: the same sort of variety, although there were some hints
[29:26] Speaker 1: of the sort of roles he would become known for,
[29:31] Speaker 1: such as some of his escape and suspense performances, particularly
[29:36] Speaker 1: Present Tents and Three Skeleton Key and later Pitt in
[29:41] Speaker 1: The Pendulum. The same is somewhat noteworthy as it's probably
[29:47] Speaker 1: the most unambiguously heroic role that Pross played over radio
[29:54] Speaker 1: or film and really allows him a chance to demonstrate
[29:58] Speaker 1: some of his real life charm and humor. Listener comments
[30:03] Speaker 1: and feedback now and we go over to Spotify where
[30:06] Speaker 1: we had a comment regarding the Miracle Tea party, and
[30:10] Speaker 1: we have an interesting answer regarding the date Doctor who
[30:14] Speaker 1: done it right? So this episode has the announcer saying
[30:17] Speaker 1: Leslie Charter is thirty three. He was born in nineteen
[30:21] Speaker 1: oh seven, which makes this episode nineteen forty. But I'm
[30:25] Speaker 1: guessing that isn't what you were talking about in the beginning. Well,
[30:29] Speaker 1: I actually was talking about the fact that there was
[30:34] Speaker 1: a conflict between different sources on the program that put
[30:39] Speaker 1: the date of the show as nineteen forty and others
[30:44] Speaker 1: that put it as nineteen forty four. I really didn't
[30:48] Speaker 1: know why there was that difference, But I think you
[30:52] Speaker 1: give a good reason why this was likely nineteen forty,
[30:56] Speaker 1: and I'm not certain why it wasn't picked up. The
[31:00] Speaker 1: sort of storytelling in The Saint was very much in
[31:05] Speaker 1: Voguan nineteen forty, as well as man and woman detective teams.
[31:12] Speaker 1: With the success of The Thin Man and the idea
[31:15] Speaker 1: of directly adapting the author's stories would also have been
[31:21] Speaker 1: a lot more popular, particularly with the success of Sherlock Holmes,
[31:28] Speaker 1: with Bruce and Rathbone having been successful over radio. I
[31:32] Speaker 1: don't know why some would put it in nineteen forty four,
[31:36] Speaker 1: except it does still have the same sort of musical
[31:40] Speaker 1: feel as what would end up coming to air so
[31:45] Speaker 1: many years later. Yeah, that does answer that question definitely,
[31:50] Speaker 1: nineteen forty based on the age, Harrison Rids, I agree
[31:54] Speaker 1: with your point about pet culture in the way it
[31:56] Speaker 1: has changed. It's another reason old time radio fascinates me.
[32:00] Speaker 1: Not only is it amusing to hear things like the
[32:03] Speaker 1: age of what was considered old, but there are some
[32:07] Speaker 1: surprising insights into societal behavior that you might not have
[32:11] Speaker 1: given much thought to since it seems so natural to
[32:16] Speaker 1: us today, like how we connect with pets. I never
[32:20] Speaker 1: listen to the Saint, but it seems very entertaining. I
[32:23] Speaker 1: just don't quite see the Robin hood aspect. In the addition,
[32:29] Speaker 1: and the lack of a hood aspect is a really
[32:34] Speaker 1: interesting thing about the Saint. In the books, which started
[32:39] Speaker 1: being released in nineteen twenty eight, the Saint often plundered criminals. Now,
[32:46] Speaker 1: his actions would often lead to criminals either going to
[32:51] Speaker 1: jail or getting killed, but the Saint had a very
[32:55] Speaker 1: strong interests and plundering the riches of the he termed
[33:01] Speaker 1: quote unquote the ungodly. So the Saints' path to dealing
[33:06] Speaker 1: with a criminal or crime would look very different than
[33:13] Speaker 1: your traditional detective, because first he wanted to make them pay,
[33:20] Speaker 1: quite literally, and the money would go either to someone
[33:25] Speaker 1: who they had wronged, or it would go to charity
[33:29] Speaker 1: or some other people in need, with a little bit
[33:32] Speaker 1: generally going in the direction of Simon Templar and his men.
[33:37] Speaker 1: When you get into some of the later films as
[33:41] Speaker 1: well as the radio series, it is not really viewed
[33:47] Speaker 1: socially or morally correct to have a hero who engages
[33:52] Speaker 1: in thievery, so at least in the existing episodes, Saint
[33:57] Speaker 1: doesn't engage in any though I should say that that
[34:01] Speaker 1: one excerpt we played a mystery playhouse was of a
[34:08] Speaker 1: story where Simon extorted a bunch of money from these
[34:14] Speaker 1: various criminal elements, but that was during the war and
[34:19] Speaker 1: post war was kind of a different era. Nevertheless, even
[34:24] Speaker 1: though he was not morally allowed to engage in thievery,
[34:28] Speaker 1: the radio program still kept the title for him as
[34:33] Speaker 1: the Robin Hood of Modern Crime. Even though it did
[34:37] Speaker 1: not fit at all. That clears that up all right. Well,
[34:41] Speaker 1: now it is time to thank our Patreon supporter of
[34:44] Speaker 1: the day, and I want to thank Haidi, Patreon supporter

[34:51] Speaker 1: Shamas level of four dollars more per month. Thanks so
[34:53] Speaker 1: much for your support, Hatie, and that will do it

[35:10] Speaker 1: But join us back here tomorrow for the big story.
[35:14] Speaker 16: Where thought I was muddled before, now I'm absolutely certain
[35:19] Speaker 16: it's more interesting online. It's a testimony of Nellie Swinson.
[35:26] Speaker 12: Waitress, Miss Swinson, If you were asked at the preliminary hearing,
[35:33] Speaker 12: can you tell who was standing in the doorway with
[35:36] Speaker 12: the gun?
[35:38] Speaker 2: Yes, sir, what did you say?
[35:41] Speaker 10: I said, I couldn't tell exactly, because you see, he
[35:44] Speaker 10: had his coat collar up and his hat down, and.
[35:47] Speaker 8: I didn't watch his face.
[35:48] Speaker 2: I watched his gun.
[35:50] Speaker 12: That's what you said at the preliminary hearing some weeks ago. Now,
[35:54] Speaker 12: what did you testify to a few minutes ago.
[35:58] Speaker 11: I can't exactly remember.
[36:00] Speaker 12: I shall refresh your memory. You said, quote the man
[36:06] Speaker 12: I saw was Clem. Grayson unquote. Is that correct?
[36:13] Speaker 2: Yes?
[36:14] Speaker 12: How do you explain you're revamping your testimony?
[36:18] Speaker 11: I can't.
[36:20] Speaker 12: During the recess a few minutes ago, would you talk
[36:24] Speaker 12: to the prosecutor in this case?
[36:27] Speaker 2: Yes, lawder please, Yes I did.
[36:31] Speaker 12: Would you please tell the court what it was you
[36:33] Speaker 12: talked to the prosecutor of pop I object.
[36:37] Speaker 16: Or suspend the objection on the grounds of the content
[36:39] Speaker 16: of the conversation was immaterial. Immaterial, It's the most material
[36:44] Speaker 16: thing on earth. This is fantastic.
[36:48] Speaker 1: Hope you'll be with us then in the meantime, send
