[2:58] Speaker 2: Wrigley's Spearmint refreshing, delicious. In July, the night slips down
[3:20] Speaker 2: over Broadway like a black silk stocking, and you drift
[3:23] Speaker 2: to it. Because the other promises you made to yourself
[3:26] Speaker 2: never happened. The part of your life that never counted
[3:29] Speaker 2: is left behind. You stand on a street corner, beating
[3:31] Speaker 2: down the scream in your throat. The shadows start at
[3:34] Speaker 2: seven o'clock and deepen into night. You hug it close
[3:38] Speaker 2: because it's your chance that something will happen to you
[3:40] Speaker 2: outside of the movies, and the tap on the shoulder
[3:42] Speaker 2: starts it, or the laughter that floats down to your
[3:44] Speaker 2: end of the bar, or a smile, or the man
[3:46] Speaker 2: who runs down the hall after you Ednie, Hey, Danny,
[3:50] Speaker 2: what's the matters? Ergent glad?
[3:51] Speaker 3: I mad you before you took off for the day,
[3:54] Speaker 3: phone called Danny from a hysterical woman. You know, I
[3:56] Speaker 3: had a hard time come seventies fifty sixth danty, fourth
[4:02] Speaker 3: floor apartment. That's where her fiance lives. The guy's threatening
[4:05] Speaker 3: to blow his brains out here. The names and such
[4:07] Speaker 3: I jotted on this paper blood cards, you know, waiting
[4:10] Speaker 3: for you downstairs. Motherlin's with it.
[4:22] Speaker 4: That said Danny sixteen forty seven. Who'd you say was
[4:26] Speaker 4: doing all?
[4:26] Speaker 2: A sertening manber the name of Blaine. First there is
[4:29] Speaker 2: let's see David try the buzzy mugg.
[4:40] Speaker 5: Yeah he didn't.
[4:46] Speaker 2: Miss Carroll said he was going to do it in
[4:47] Speaker 2: deeper on the police.
[4:49] Speaker 6: It happened up.
[4:50] Speaker 2: There on the fourth floor, mister Blaine, it happened just now,
[4:54] Speaker 2: not more than who's that crying? That's her, Miss Carroll,
[4:57] Speaker 2: see her?
[4:59] Speaker 7: See he the barristerp on the third floor landing, and
[5:02] Speaker 7: that's mister Fallon at the reel.
[5:04] Speaker 2: On the second Let's go muggun.
[5:14] Speaker 8: Dead and guns.
[5:15] Speaker 4: Here, Danny by his chair. It's brand new.
[5:18] Speaker 2: Looks like mister Blaine had his choice.
[5:20] Speaker 4: Uh, it's quite a gun collection from Darren Giosanna, complete
[5:24] Speaker 4: equipment for a young arsenal.
[5:25] Speaker 2: Muggling those people we passed the landing. That boy on
[5:28] Speaker 2: the second floor, mister Fallon, and miss Carroll on the third.
[5:31] Speaker 9: I'll want to talk to him, missus Carrol's still crying.
[5:34] Speaker 9: Danny here, poor woman.
[5:43] Speaker 2: And stand for a moment and consider the virulence of death,
[5:46] Speaker 2: how it is not content with its own must reach
[5:49] Speaker 2: out to slash the livid scar into the heart of
[5:51] Speaker 2: those crowding its edge. The woman crying softly, the other
[5:56] Speaker 2: tenants s whispering, moving restlessly in the lower corridors, and
[5:59] Speaker 2: then hugging wall. Because the attendance on violence must pass
[6:03] Speaker 2: the photographers, the interns, the technicians, and the moment is gone.
[6:07] Speaker 2: It's routine, now official, the first entry in the file
[6:11] Speaker 2: of night. The next morning, gather it into a neat
[6:20] Speaker 2: stack on your desk and sit down to it, and
[6:22] Speaker 2: be surprised at the opening door and the quick presence
[6:25] Speaker 2: of the woman you had marked for later interrogation.
[6:30] Speaker 10: The man who was with you last night. He said
[6:32] Speaker 10: you wanted to talk to me.
[6:34] Speaker 2: It could have waited, miss Carroll, until you've felt better, and.
[6:36] Speaker 10: Until you It'll not be forgotten that easily, mister Clover,
[6:40] Speaker 10: that's what you mean. If you have something to ask,
[6:43] Speaker 10: ask only don't prolong it. Don't make me wait in wonder.
[6:47] Speaker 10: Sorrow is enough by itself, don't you think, Yes.
[6:50] Speaker 2: Yes it is, And you try to understand us.
[6:54] Speaker 10: Scale A man I loved, who loved me, is dead
[6:58] Speaker 10: by his own hand, by his own will. He could
[7:03] Speaker 10: have lifted his burden on to me, whatever it was,
[7:06] Speaker 10: but he didn't, and now he's dead. You want more than.
[7:10] Speaker 2: That, maybe because this is my job, because I can't
[7:14] Speaker 2: rule out the possibility that David Blaine was murdered.
[7:19] Speaker 10: Awful, how ugly of you to think a thing like that,
[7:24] Speaker 10: that anyone could have wanted my David dead.
[7:28] Speaker 2: If it's ugly tell me about him.
[7:32] Speaker 10: He loved me, he was going to marry me. He
[7:37] Speaker 10: was polite and gentle. Sometimes he'd forget himself. Then he'd
[7:45] Speaker 10: begged my forgiveness. Wept, sometimes showered me with gifts so
[7:50] Speaker 10: I'd be quicker to forgive. This watch. He called it
[7:56] Speaker 10: an engagement present, but it was really an atonement for
[8:01] Speaker 10: Look at it, see how I love me.
[8:03] Speaker 2: It's a beautiful watch. Miss Karen.
[8:06] Speaker 10: Listen to it. It ticks ticks ticks away my life
[8:11] Speaker 10: with David.
[8:11] Speaker 2: Softly, Jake, listen to me, Miss Karroen. Why would David
[8:16] Speaker 2: kill himself? You were in love, you were going to
[8:18] Speaker 2: be married.
[8:19] Speaker 10: Why he had a secret. That's it. He had a secret.
[8:26] Speaker 10: He didn't want to stain me with it. Isn't that it,
[8:30] Speaker 10: mister Clover. Isn't that why a man kills himself with
[8:34] Speaker 10: a girl he loves.
[8:36] Speaker 4: I'm sorry, Danny, I fuck.
[8:39] Speaker 2: It's all right, Doctor Sainsky come in. Well that'll be
[8:43] Speaker 2: all for now, Miss Carroll. Thank you all you helped
[8:46] Speaker 2: a great deal. Thank you.
[8:49] Speaker 10: You have nothing more, nothing not now, and I'll go.
[8:55] Speaker 10: If you should want to talk to me again, I promise.
[8:57] Speaker 1: I'll be.
[9:03] Speaker 4: It's not easy huh, Danny, to pry into grief, to scavenge.
[9:06] Speaker 2: You've got something, doctor, Just tell me.
[9:09] Speaker 4: Forgive me, Danny. Sometimes my mouth gets the better of me.
[9:13] Speaker 4: I studied it, Danny. I put it on your desk
[9:16] Speaker 4: for you to study. Read it sideways, upside down, still
[9:19] Speaker 4: comes out suicide.
[9:20] Speaker 2: Then it's done. Finished.
[9:21] Speaker 11: Huh.
[9:22] Speaker 2: Nothing to bother. A brain's about, like you say, Danny.
[9:25] Speaker 8: Finished.
[9:27] Speaker 4: Except when a man who dies, as Blain did in
[9:30] Speaker 4: shock spasm, arms rigid at right angles to his body,
[9:33] Speaker 4: fingers clenched. How is it the gun was not found
[9:37] Speaker 4: in his hand but on the floor. It's just a
[9:39] Speaker 4: small question, Danny. To gnaw at the brain of a
[9:41] Speaker 4: medical man.
[9:43] Speaker 2: Sometimes it happens. So, but yeah, go practice medicine. Doctor.
[9:48] Speaker 2: Maybe I can bring it back an answer. Maybe where
[9:51] Speaker 2: a man died, someone has an answer.
[10:16] Speaker 12: I'm busy right now.
[10:17] Speaker 2: Your name Richard Phelon. I'm from the police.
[10:21] Speaker 12: I guess that gives you a right.
[10:23] Speaker 13: Come on in.
[10:26] Speaker 12: You want to sit over there, Move those papers off
[10:29] Speaker 12: the couch, just put them.
[10:29] Speaker 2: On the floor. You're writer, fell you interested, are curious?
[10:34] Speaker 2: What do you right about about your city?
[10:37] Speaker 12: But how it's not like my part of the country,
[10:40] Speaker 12: About your many faceted city, about your stinking city, your people,
[10:46] Speaker 12: your small people. You hurry up, people, You're no place
[10:48] Speaker 12: to go people, the no tears city, the rat hole city.
[10:54] Speaker 12: That's what I write about.
[10:55] Speaker 2: Any material up on the fourth floor.
[10:58] Speaker 12: I figured that it'd be your gamut huhhh nothing. Your
[11:02] Speaker 12: city caught up with a man and he shot himself
[11:04] Speaker 12: before it drowned him. I'll think about the man and
[11:07] Speaker 12: smile and wish him well.
[11:08] Speaker 2: Know anything about him.
[11:09] Speaker 12: His name was David Blaine. He walked on and on
[11:12] Speaker 12: with a third floor woman, Missus Carroll. Last night I
[11:15] Speaker 12: heard a shot. I ran out into the hall. Missus
[11:17] Speaker 12: Galvin downstairs, ran out into the hall. Miss Carroll upstairs,
[11:20] Speaker 12: ran out into the hall. We looked up the stair
[11:22] Speaker 12: well to the fourth floor from where the shot came.
[11:26] Speaker 12: David Blaine was dead. I know that about him.
[11:28] Speaker 2: What else?
[11:29] Speaker 13: Nothing?
[11:31] Speaker 12: Sit there if you want, but don't stare at the
[11:33] Speaker 12: back of my neck when I write. Makes me self conscious.
[11:47] Speaker 3: My gratitude for permitting me my ten minutes at the
[11:50] Speaker 3: water cooler. Danny feel better, Joe. It goes without saying.
[11:53] Speaker 3: And now to the toils of the day. It comes
[11:55] Speaker 3: to that part of the rundown in which I proffer
[11:58] Speaker 3: you your daily piece of resistance in two parts. Wit
[12:03] Speaker 3: gunn found that side of deceased David Blaine is indeed
[12:06] Speaker 3: gun with which disease did do himself.
[12:08] Speaker 2: In gino that hasn't been patience Dandy.
[12:10] Speaker 3: Part two will settle the question itching in your brain
[12:13] Speaker 3: of suicide versus murder. Scratch it for me, you know,
[12:16] Speaker 3: delighted Part two of report from technical States. Impossible for
[12:21] Speaker 3: any tenant to have shot said deceased make an escape
[12:24] Speaker 3: down the fire escape arrived in the hallways in time
[12:27] Speaker 3: to look up and yell man dead on the fourth
[12:29] Speaker 3: floor in your presence. Add to this the double whammy
[12:33] Speaker 3: I have held out on you, pique you and Anny
[12:37] Speaker 3: the Lakeman, a scientist such duty have come up with
[12:39] Speaker 3: that David Blaine did indeed lose upwards to fifty grand
[12:42] Speaker 3: by sour bets in the stock market. This in the
[12:44] Speaker 3: period of the last month. Fifty grand and thirty days
[12:48] Speaker 3: for this guy's killed themselves Danny for a lot less time.
[12:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, you know, close the fil on Blaine.
[12:55] Speaker 2: There's nothing more than Danny Klo speaking. They switched me
[12:59] Speaker 2: to you, You the man on that plain thing. Yes,
[13:03] Speaker 2: what about it? Who are you? Blanche himby mister eighteen
[13:07] Speaker 2: thirty four East fifty nine, Room one one. You said, Blaine,
[13:10] Speaker 2: what have you got? What have I got? I got?
[13:14] Speaker 2: He was murdered, mister. And go there and walk the
[13:22] Speaker 2: hallway mottled with shadows and scuffings, the short corridor that
[13:25] Speaker 2: ends in the door with the tin numbers, and the
[13:27] Speaker 2: pull down bed in the basin in the corner. Knock
[13:29] Speaker 2: on door eleven and get no answer, and go in
[13:32] Speaker 2: because there was urgency in the voice that said come here.
[13:35] Speaker 2: The bed was pulled down, the rug was frayed, and
[13:38] Speaker 2: the splotch of blood trailed off it onto the floor.
[13:41] Speaker 2: The girl was behind the couch, huddled, her knees drawn
[13:44] Speaker 2: to her chest, and only the fat summer fly pinging
[13:47] Speaker 2: against the window made sound. That and the lonely room
[13:50] Speaker 2: silences that intruded upon the dead girl, the murdered girl.
[14:12] Speaker 2: For refreshment while you work, for enjoyment. Anytime chew a
[14:15] Speaker 2: stick of Brigley's spearmint gum when your mouth feels dry,
[14:19] Speaker 2: when you're warm or tired, Wrigley's spearmint is really refreshing.
[14:23] Speaker 2: The lively, full bodied real mint flavor cools your mouth,
[14:26] Speaker 2: moistener throat, freshinger taste, and the chewing itself gives you
[14:30] Speaker 2: a little lift, helps you feed your best and do
[14:33] Speaker 2: your best. So for chewing enjoyment plus pleasant refreshment, chew
[14:37] Speaker 2: delicious wriggly spearmint gum. We now continue with Broadways My Beat,
[14:44] Speaker 2: written by Morton Fine and David Friedkin and starring Larry
[14:48] Speaker 2: Thor as Detective Danny Klover. In the Glittering Midsummer's Day,
[15:01] Speaker 2: Broadway takes time out to shimmer. The chrome is polished high,
[15:05] Speaker 2: the better to reflect the passage of women who lean
[15:07] Speaker 2: for a moment against the summer's heat and then walk
[15:10] Speaker 2: slowly on the mouthpieces of the pay phones glisten with
[15:13] Speaker 2: the moist whispers of an empty summer afternoon. A money
[15:17] Speaker 2: clip glints through the dark of an alley, and you
[15:19] Speaker 2: know that someone has gotten nods on a piece of
[15:21] Speaker 2: the day. There's the drone of the neon and the
[15:24] Speaker 2: tired wind nudging a headline in a shining trash bin.
[15:27] Speaker 2: Cop finds murdered girl in tenement room, and the wet
[15:31] Speaker 2: shirt pulled from your back.
[15:33] Speaker 7: Like other summers, other days where I was in the
[15:44] Speaker 7: corridor between my office and the show up room. That
[15:47] Speaker 7: had happened before too, only the names of the dead
[15:50] Speaker 7: were different.
[15:51] Speaker 4: Lanch Hemby, I got the run down on it you wanted.
[15:54] Speaker 2: Denny, what's you get, Maugamon.
[15:56] Speaker 4: I'll have to slice it off fast, Danny, I'm do it.
[15:57] Speaker 4: The show up a woman there are missus westfall real
[16:00] Speaker 4: eager to identify a prowler, she dreamed.
[16:02] Speaker 2: Last night, I'll walk you down this girl.
[16:05] Speaker 4: Blanche Hemby, frequent visitor, got her name on her guestbook
[16:09] Speaker 4: maybe five times for what, oh nothing. Sensational brawl over
[16:13] Speaker 4: a hair do with another dame in a bar phonograph,
[16:16] Speaker 4: screaming her screaming, disturbing the neighbors. Beat a guy's head
[16:20] Speaker 4: open with a bottle because he called her a gimmy
[16:21] Speaker 4: gimmey girl.
[16:22] Speaker 8: Things like that.
[16:23] Speaker 2: Any tie up with David Blaine, I knows.
[16:25] Speaker 4: They're on the bars where she had the trouble, A
[16:27] Speaker 4: tenement where she lived, the place she was working out of.
[16:29] Speaker 2: Two weeks ago they fired her. Huh.
[16:32] Speaker 4: She gave notice Danny two weeks ago. So she was
[16:35] Speaker 4: sick and tired working for Nickel tips behind the Hamburger counter.
[16:38] Speaker 2: She had better.
[16:39] Speaker 9: She told him a lot better.
[16:41] Speaker 4: Bit a hole in her time.
[16:42] Speaker 9: Card threw it on the griddle, walked out.
[16:44] Speaker 2: Work anywhere else, see anyone else?
[16:46] Speaker 4: M I checked that too. Lance slept away the days
[16:50] Speaker 4: in her room. Three times a day. She got up
[16:52] Speaker 4: the phone for beer once a day, for sandwiches.
[16:55] Speaker 9: Up here, I am.
[16:56] Speaker 2: I'll check with you later.
[16:57] Speaker 9: Down Yeah, I know where I can alone.
[17:02] Speaker 2: That kid up there?
[17:02] Speaker 8: What about him, Danny, some punk problem?
[17:04] Speaker 2: That's the boy was the tenant on the second floor
[17:06] Speaker 2: where Blaine was murdered. Get him, muggle him, bring him
[17:08] Speaker 2: up to my office.
[17:09] Speaker 9: Sure, Danny, right away, there is.
[17:20] Speaker 12: He's not anxious hiring hands off me.
[17:22] Speaker 2: You're scam only beg it easy, kid. What happened? The
[17:26] Speaker 2: city trying to drown you the way you said it
[17:28] Speaker 2: does to people?
[17:29] Speaker 12: I hate it. I get drunk at night because I
[17:32] Speaker 12: hate it that way. I see it for what it is.
[17:34] Speaker 12: And you can't stand that. When someone like me sees
[17:37] Speaker 12: you for what you are, you hate me, and you
[17:39] Speaker 12: kick me, you throw me in jail. Because I'm better,
[17:41] Speaker 12: even drunk, I'm better.
[17:43] Speaker 9: He's right, Danny, he's a lot better than us.
[17:45] Speaker 4: He goes around with a pocket full of watch like this,
[17:48] Speaker 4: because he's so much better.
[17:50] Speaker 8: Sit.
[17:52] Speaker 2: Where'd you get this watch? Richard?
[17:54] Speaker 12: I held out my hand and I begged, and a
[17:57] Speaker 12: kindly person dropped it right into my begging.
[18:00] Speaker 2: Where'd you get it?
[18:01] Speaker 12: I told you, I walked the streets and it fell
[18:04] Speaker 12: into my hand because I was crying and lonely and
[18:08] Speaker 12: sick for home.
[18:09] Speaker 2: Miss Carroll, your neighbor has a watch like this. You
[18:12] Speaker 2: steal it from her. You steal it, Richard, lock him
[18:17] Speaker 2: up mat a watch exactly like the one Regina Carroll
[18:23] Speaker 2: owned her engagement present from the man now dead, presumed
[18:27] Speaker 2: a suicide, suspected murdered. If it were Miss Carroll's watch,
[18:30] Speaker 2: what was Richard Fallon doing with it? It was a
[18:33] Speaker 2: simple question, and Richard couldn't answer it. So call miss Carroll,
[18:38] Speaker 2: get no answer, So open the plush box that held
[18:41] Speaker 2: the watch Levante Jewelers for over a century. That's what
[18:44] Speaker 2: the satin ribbon said, glued against the inside top. Stolen
[18:48] Speaker 2: from Levandi Jewelers for over a century. Go there, asked
[18:51] Speaker 2: mister Lavandy.
[18:52] Speaker 11: Who No, not stolen, purchased by whom a policeman you
[18:57] Speaker 11: said you were. Let me see. Please, yes, this watch
[19:04] Speaker 11: was purchased.
[19:05] Speaker 2: You've already said that.
[19:06] Speaker 11: Apologies, I'm temporizing, you see, I'm trying to gather my
[19:10] Speaker 11: forces together now as to who purchased this watch, perhaps
[19:15] Speaker 11: to Miss Carroll, my old friend, Miss Regina Carroll. Of course,
[19:19] Speaker 11: it's impossible to tell what.
[19:21] Speaker 2: A you're trying to tell me, mister Lavan. You see, this.
[19:23] Speaker 11: Is quite an unusual watch. We rarely sell more than
[19:26] Speaker 11: one a year, our own design with a foreign mechanism. However,
[19:30] Speaker 11: we sold two in the last few months.
[19:33] Speaker 8: Remarkable.
[19:33] Speaker 2: How did you sell them too?
[19:34] Speaker 11: Even more remarkable? A few days ago, missus Carroll purchased
[19:38] Speaker 11: such a watch. A few months ago a fiancee now dead,
[19:42] Speaker 11: I've heard a few months ago this gentleman also purchased
[19:46] Speaker 11: such a watch as an engagement gift for Miss Carroll.
[19:49] Speaker 2: That makes two watches for Miss Carroll, both the same kind.
[19:52] Speaker 2: Is there an explanation for it, mister l.
[19:54] Speaker 11: Miss Carroll said she lost her engagement watch, thus she
[19:58] Speaker 11: purchased another one. Mean not to mention it to her fiancee,
[20:03] Speaker 11: or to anyone for that matter. But now you a policeman,
[20:08] Speaker 11: mister Blain dead, well, you don't think I'm going back
[20:14] Speaker 11: on my word to an old friend.
[20:15] Speaker 2: Do you, miss Carroll is your old friend?
[20:17] Speaker 11: Her dad and I were close. I toddled China, poor woman?
[20:23] Speaker 2: You mean about her fiancee?
[20:24] Speaker 11: About all of them?
[20:26] Speaker 2: What do you mean?
[20:28] Speaker 11: There were four of them, you know, two at college,
[20:31] Speaker 11: one when she was a sophomore, one when she was
[20:33] Speaker 11: a senior. Then about ten years ago, a young man
[20:37] Speaker 11: since quite successful in groceries, has a nice store for
[20:41] Speaker 11: select customers, and medicine chap named Mason.
[20:45] Speaker 2: I think miss Carroll was engaged four times.
[20:48] Speaker 11: She's thirty seven. You know she doesn't look at does
[20:51] Speaker 11: she still a beauty? A bygone day kind of beauty?
[20:56] Speaker 11: If you know what I mean? Victorian? Would that Pete?
[21:02] Speaker 11: I often wondered why she never married any of her
[21:04] Speaker 11: young men, why they backed out on their marriage.
[21:09] Speaker 2: I wonder why too, you need some help her. I'm
[21:26] Speaker 2: looking for a mister Mason. All right, I'm Mason. I'm
[21:30] Speaker 2: Danny Clover Police.
[21:32] Speaker 8: The first name's Pete.
[21:33] Speaker 14: Danny, you got a couple of minutes anytime for you, fellas.
[21:36] Speaker 14: I need a couple of minutes to recuperate anyhow, missus, smile.
[21:40] Speaker 2: Just have me on the floor.
[21:41] Speaker 14: Oh, she comes in here with her French poodles, three
[21:44] Speaker 14: on a leash, made in chauffeur trailing in back.
[21:48] Speaker 9: What is a Dozen't wild?
[21:50] Speaker 14: You ever hear anybody say bagel with a broad eye?
[21:53] Speaker 14: She wants a dozen boggles? I don't understand her. Finally
[21:57] Speaker 14: she tells me what she wants is Receptacles were a
[22:00] Speaker 14: delicacy known as locks.
[22:01] Speaker 2: How did she say? Locks?
[22:03] Speaker 9: Locks?
[22:03] Speaker 14: The show first said, what can I do for you?
[22:06] Speaker 8: Danny?
[22:07] Speaker 2: You were once engaged to a Regina Carol, weren't you?
[22:10] Speaker 14: It was an experience.
[22:11] Speaker 11: I'm not sorry for it.
[22:13] Speaker 2: Who broke the engagement?
[22:15] Speaker 14: You've got to ask that because it's important for the
[22:17] Speaker 14: police to know, Right, Denny, I broke it?
[22:21] Speaker 2: Why? Why?
[22:23] Speaker 14: That's a question I often asked myself. Sometimes my wife
[22:26] Speaker 14: asked me, and I'll tell you what I answered.
[22:29] Speaker 2: Go ahead.
[22:30] Speaker 14: Regina was a girl just like the girl that married
[22:32] Speaker 14: dear old dad. Close to the wedding, I discovered this
[22:35] Speaker 14: is not the type of girl I wanted personally, the
[22:38] Speaker 14: girl that married my dear old dad. My mom nagged
[22:41] Speaker 14: my father to an early grave. Mom and Regina two
[22:44] Speaker 14: peas from the same pod. Go on, I'll tell you
[22:46] Speaker 14: about Regina. I figure she has a picture in the
[22:49] Speaker 14: head of a husband in a smoking jacket with satin
[22:52] Speaker 14: lapels and a curved pipe in a fireplace. I don't
[22:55] Speaker 14: fit the requirements personally. I like poka better than cribbage.
[22:58] Speaker 2: Uh huh? What else?
[23:00] Speaker 8: Well?
[23:01] Speaker 14: Regina how she dressed pretty? Understand but she made her
[23:07] Speaker 14: own fashions which she never changed. Ribbons, dresses, choked against
[23:11] Speaker 14: the throat, and always a little too long. She slipped
[23:15] Speaker 14: on the ice. Once I told her she had pretty legs,
[23:18] Speaker 14: she slapped me. That's what about Regina Carroll? Danny that
[23:22] Speaker 14: enough plenty? Thanks, thanks a lot Garden, Danny Clover. I
[23:46] Speaker 14: couldn't be more charmed. If I tried.
[23:47] Speaker 2: Quiet evening in technical lot Gordon, it was now the
[23:51] Speaker 2: place screeches at me.
[23:52] Speaker 8: Did you do that? Danny? Just by walking in here?
[23:54] Speaker 2: You mix yourself better pills than those test tubes. I
[23:57] Speaker 2: don't have to have company, no offense. The gun that
[24:01] Speaker 2: killed David Blaine, get it out and go over it again.
[24:03] Speaker 2: I've already examined it thoroughly. My report was placed on
[24:06] Speaker 2: your desk. Get it out.
[24:07] Speaker 8: Why can recall it to you if memory fails you?
[24:10] Speaker 8: Thirty two calibers Smith and Wesson fire once.
[24:13] Speaker 2: Get it, examine it all right?
[24:15] Speaker 8: All right, see I'm examining. It's still as it was
[24:23] Speaker 8: when Blaine held.
[24:24] Speaker 2: It close to it the barrel. Put it on a slide,
[24:26] Speaker 2: hold it up to the light. Whatever you have to do.
[24:28] Speaker 8: If you ask, Danny, I'll do better. Perhaps this will
[24:33] Speaker 8: amuse you. The spectro micrograph in largest forty five times
[24:38] Speaker 8: and there have I looked, Denny? You look alright, Danny?
[24:47] Speaker 2: Wow?
[24:48] Speaker 8: What he's infinitesimal scratch marks on the barrel. Fascinating and
[24:54] Speaker 8: a new quirk. It didn't register on me before I
[24:57] Speaker 8: checked the rifling in the barrel against the slow which
[25:00] Speaker 8: we call standard operating procedure. I didn't think of looking
[25:03] Speaker 8: at the outside of the barrel. Why should I with
[25:05] Speaker 8: a suicide, I guess I should have been.
[25:08] Speaker 2: And what would you have found out?
[25:09] Speaker 8: Godon that the man killed himself with a silencer on
[25:12] Speaker 8: his weapon. Now that's what I call taking quiet. Please
[25:17] Speaker 8: a shade too far around?
[25:35] Speaker 10: Oh, mister Clover. I knew you'd come back, knew there'd
[25:39] Speaker 10: be more things you'd want to know about.
[25:41] Speaker 2: David.
[25:42] Speaker 10: Did you come in?
[25:43] Speaker 2: Thanks?
[25:47] Speaker 10: You may sit down that chair.
[25:49] Speaker 2: No, thanks? What makes you think I wanted to find
[25:52] Speaker 2: out any more about David.
[25:55] Speaker 10: I assumed it suicide files to complete. I realize it's
[26:01] Speaker 10: my duty to be co operative, Miss Carroll. I can
[26:04] Speaker 10: tell you so much about him. He was generous, he
[26:08] Speaker 10: was a gentleman. Rare thing to find he was murdered.
[26:14] Speaker 10: You suggested that before, mister Clover. I didn't believe it then.
[26:18] Speaker 10: I don't believe it.
[26:19] Speaker 2: Now, murdered. He was dead minutes before we got to it.
[26:21] Speaker 2: That stupid Listen to me, Miss.
[26:22] Speaker 12: Carroll, of it.
[26:23] Speaker 10: Because I heard the shot. We all heard it. We
[26:26] Speaker 10: all ran out into the hall.
[26:28] Speaker 2: Do you have a gun, Miss Carroll?
[26:31] Speaker 10: Yes, I have a gun. David gave it to me
[26:34] Speaker 10: woman alone.
[26:35] Speaker 2: Did he show you how to fire it?
[26:37] Speaker 10: Of course he did. He loved guns. I interested myself
[26:41] Speaker 10: in them till I get the gun.
[26:43] Speaker 2: It isn't necessary for now. You don't have to get
[26:46] Speaker 2: the silencer either.
[26:49] Speaker 10: What are you talking about?
[26:50] Speaker 2: The gun you shot David with his own gun was
[26:51] Speaker 2: equipped to the silencer.
[26:55] Speaker 10: Mister Clover, I don't understand you at all. I'm a
[26:58] Speaker 10: lonely woman, and I admitted I'm a helpless one. How
[27:05] Speaker 10: could I have killed anyone someone I loved?
[27:11] Speaker 2: Nice view from this window, Miss Carroll, you could stand here,
[27:15] Speaker 2: see Detective Muggevin and me coming, fire a blank cartridge
[27:18] Speaker 2: from your gun, run out into the hall, look up,
[27:20] Speaker 2: and everyone thinks the shot came from the floor above
[27:22] Speaker 2: from David Blaine's apartment. Either you admit it, missus Carroll. No, no,
[27:28] Speaker 2: I want to show you something.
[27:30] Speaker 8: Here.
[27:32] Speaker 2: Look at it, Miss Carroll, A watch just like the
[27:34] Speaker 2: one you're wearing.
[27:35] Speaker 10: I didn't kill it.
[27:36] Speaker 2: David Blaine broke his engagement to you, didn't he I
[27:38] Speaker 2: didn't kill the kind of woman you are. Proper and proud.
[27:41] Speaker 2: You gave him back the watch. But what to tell
[27:43] Speaker 2: your friends? Tell him that someone else walked out on
[27:45] Speaker 2: you the way three other men did, a proud woman
[27:47] Speaker 2: like you. So you bought another watch just like it,
[27:50] Speaker 2: the one you're wearing. Please please, because I have the
[27:52] Speaker 2: one you gave back to David. The watch you had
[27:54] Speaker 2: that boy, that writer, Richard Fallon Steele, from David's apartment
[27:57] Speaker 2: so the police wouldn't find it there and ask questions.
[27:59] Speaker 2: You totally get rid of the watch. He got drunk
[28:01] Speaker 2: instead got picked up.
[28:05] Speaker 10: David jilted me. I didn't kill him.
[28:08] Speaker 2: You did. You couldn't live with the thought of another
[28:10] Speaker 2: man's walking out on you like the other three. That's
[28:12] Speaker 2: why you bought the watch, so your friends would think
[28:14] Speaker 2: you were still engaged close, so your friends would think
[28:17] Speaker 2: David died because of the money he lost. And Blanche
[28:20] Speaker 2: hemby the reason why David walked out on you filth.
[28:23] Speaker 2: The woman David loved Peter to death.
[28:28] Speaker 5: Like David is felt instead of me a woman like.
[28:32] Speaker 2: That, Miss Carrol, that's not true what you said.
[28:37] Speaker 10: Those men didn't turn me down. I turned them down
[28:41] Speaker 10: college boys, grosser, not good enough.
[28:55] Speaker 6: It is true, true it did walk out, take me away.
[29:10] Speaker 5: But I don't want to look at anyone. I can't
[29:14] Speaker 5: look at anyone.
[29:37] Speaker 2: Broadway is deserted now. Maybe it's the heat. Maybe it's
[29:40] Speaker 2: just that people get tired and want to go home
[29:43] Speaker 2: because Broadway threw sand in their eyes. Maybe you found
[29:46] Speaker 2: what you were looking for and couldn't stare it in
[29:48] Speaker 2: the face. Because it's a street that will give you
[29:51] Speaker 2: anything you want, any way you want it. It's Broadway,
[29:55] Speaker 2: the gaudiest, the most violent, the lonesomest is in the world.

[30:55] Speaker 2: We invite you to join us next week at this
[30:57] Speaker 2: time when Detective Danny Clover returns again with Broadways might Be.
[31:01] Speaker 2: Broadways might Be brought to you by Wrigley Spearmint Gum
[31:04] Speaker 2: is produced and directed by Elliot Lewis, with music composed
[31:06] Speaker 2: and conducted by Alexander Courage. The program is written by
[31:09] Speaker 2: Morton Fine and David Fried, getting stars Larry Thaller as
[31:12] Speaker 2: Detective Daddy Clover with Charles Caldern as Tartaglia and Jack
[31:16] Speaker 2: Prushan as Muggeman. This is CBS, the Columbia Broadcasting System.
[31:32] Speaker 1: Welcome back. The way that the way that Gordon is
[31:37] Speaker 1: the solution is realistic. If I met hurried up, there
[31:42] Speaker 1: would have been a few more pass you would have
[31:46] Speaker 1: to run to make that late to it was a silencer.
[31:50] Speaker 1: But what can I say, It's a half hour show.
[31:53] Speaker 1: You've got to conten some stuff now. Of course, as
[31:57] Speaker 1: I said at the top of the episode, there is
[31:59] Speaker 1: actually a loss program in between last week's show and
[32:04] Speaker 1: this week. So my feeling that this motive feels quite
[32:09] Speaker 1: a bit similar in thrust as both were done rather
[32:16] Speaker 1: than the sort of greed or hate, the murderers were
[32:22] Speaker 1: both undertaken to maintain social status. Now it's a different
[32:28] Speaker 1: sort of motive, and it does make a nice change
[32:31] Speaker 1: of pace. Though even if the episode from the fifteenth
[32:37] Speaker 1: of July was a more typical motive, doing two similar
[32:42] Speaker 1: ones two weeks apart might be risk overdoing it. But
[32:48] Speaker 1: again I wouldn't say that it's crossed that line at
[32:51] Speaker 1: this point. It's just an interesting change of pace from
[32:55] Speaker 1: what we typically get. All right, Well, now, it's time
[32:59] Speaker 1: to think or Patreon supporter of the day, and I
[33:01] Speaker 1: want to think Charlie, Patreon supporter since July twenty twenty,
[33:06] Speaker 1: currently supporting the podcast at the Shawmas level of four
[33:09] Speaker 1: dollars or more per month. Thanks so much for your support, Charlie.

[33:32] Speaker 1: for drag NetWare.
[33:34] Speaker 15: Each of the individual units here on the map will
[33:37] Speaker 15: be covered by one car. Is that each one's roughly
[33:40] Speaker 15: nine blocks square. You'll be responsible for any area signed
[33:43] Speaker 15: to you.
[33:44] Speaker 13: We haven't got too much time, so before we go
[33:46] Speaker 13: down the list to.
[33:47] Speaker 15: Sign the areas, have you got any questions, any questions
[33:50] Speaker 15: at all? Yeah, Suppose there's a two to eleven call
[33:53] Speaker 15: on somebody.
[33:53] Speaker 4: Else's area, I mean, other than the one you're assigned to,
[33:57] Speaker 4: do we leave our area.
[33:57] Speaker 13: And head over there.
[33:58] Speaker 15: No, Jess, I meant to bring out if there's a
[34:01] Speaker 15: robbery call in somebody else's area, stay put so you
[34:04] Speaker 15: get a caller in the hand, anything else?
[34:06] Speaker 3: Yeah, how about the managers of these markets, they've been
[34:09] Speaker 3: briefed on a steak off.
[34:10] Speaker 13: I know we're going to be covering the area. Yeah,
[34:12] Speaker 13: they've all been alerted.
[34:14] Speaker 15: Now in case of a hold up, they might try
[34:15] Speaker 15: to contact you directly. They'll be looking for you. You'll be
[34:18] Speaker 15: looking for them. Bet it, Bob's had covered for you. Yeah.
[34:22] Speaker 2: But I'm just wondering about this Number two suspect.
[34:25] Speaker 13: I want to drive to get away car. Yeah, well
[34:27] Speaker 13: it says you have a dope sheet.
[34:28] Speaker 3: Number one suspect carries a nickel play at a revolver.
[34:32] Speaker 13: How about number two he carry a gun? Well, I
[34:34] Speaker 13: wish I could answer that. We don't know. All the
[34:37] Speaker 13: information we got on him is on my sheet right there.
[34:39] Speaker 13: I see. Well, they're never try any rough stuff anyway,
[34:42] Speaker 13: do they no gun play? They've never heard anyone. No,
[34:45] Speaker 13: not yet. Don't let them make you the first.
[34:48] Speaker 1: I hope you'll be with us then in the meantime.
