[2:39] Speaker 3: and Standard stations throughout the West. Invite you to let
[2:43] Speaker 3: George do it. The Man under the Elm Trees another
[2:52] Speaker 3: adventure of George Valentine. Dear Valentine, you may not remember,
[3:01] Speaker 3: but you and I had a very interesting talk once
[3:03] Speaker 3: in the smoking car of the streamliner. At least as
[3:05] Speaker 3: far as Mayville Junction we did, anyway. That's why I
[3:08] Speaker 3: feel I can call on you now as a friend.
[3:11] Speaker 3: I live with my little sister, missus Leticia Packler. She's
[3:14] Speaker 3: got too much money, more than's good for any woman.
[3:16] Speaker 3: She can't control it. I can't control her, and unless
[3:19] Speaker 3: you help out, there's going to be a big loud
[3:21] Speaker 3: crash at the end of the line. Now, I wondered that.
[3:23] Speaker 4: You might be coming to visit as a friend.
[3:26] Speaker 3: Of course, Irooks. What's the guy's name?
[3:28] Speaker 4: Oh, h Hannigan, Del.
[3:31] Speaker 3: Hannigan my name people you meet on trade.
[3:34] Speaker 4: Well, anyway it says so Letitia or no one else
[3:38] Speaker 4: will suspect the real reason you're here. You see. The
[3:41] Speaker 4: big trouble is my sister likes to make friends too,
[3:44] Speaker 4: only the wrong kind of friends, the kind that ought
[3:47] Speaker 4: to be in prison. Sincerely, Del Hannigan.
[3:52] Speaker 3: The name still means nothing. And it's for Mayville Junction
[3:55] Speaker 3: I'm doing if I ever held George.
[3:56] Speaker 4: It's the college town. Just because they're football teams, is good?
[4:00] Speaker 3: Angel, All right, let's go boulah blah. Even if it
[4:04] Speaker 3: is at Mayville College.
[4:15] Speaker 5: You must be mister Valentine and miss Brooke.
[4:17] Speaker 4: Yes, that's right.
[4:18] Speaker 5: That's just so much earlier that I expect you to
[4:20] Speaker 5: look at me. I'm all over, cake Flower. There's going
[4:22] Speaker 5: to be a picnic, you know, the faculty welcoming committee.
[4:26] Speaker 5: But I'm so glad to meet you.
[4:28] Speaker 4: I'm Kishop Pecklick. How do you do?
[4:31] Speaker 5: And this is skinny Adams skinny lives with us.
[4:34] Speaker 6: You know in me didn't see you salute the flag.
[4:39] Speaker 3: Well or not in uniform?
[4:41] Speaker 6: I'm keeper of the flag what flags at the college.
[4:44] Speaker 6: He used to be on the ground and Flowers committee,
[4:46] Speaker 6: But I'm not anymore, doctor said, I couldn't, but.
[4:49] Speaker 7: But I am really interested in his chemistry. You look
[4:52] Speaker 7: like he sees many young men. You realize that I
[4:56] Speaker 7: actually saw Bruce love of nitrogen thing he.
[5:00] Speaker 5: Said to your skinny. Please, they don't want to hear
[5:02] Speaker 5: your stories now. Besides, if you're going to feel strong
[5:05] Speaker 5: enough for the picnic, you better lie down, adn't you.
[5:07] Speaker 5: I'm sure Dell's put up the beach umbrella over your hand.
[5:10] Speaker 7: Well, right, don't right kissing?
[5:12] Speaker 6: I know what's good?
[5:13] Speaker 5: Thing is?
[5:17] Speaker 4: Who is he? Missus tackling Guinney?
[5:18] Speaker 5: Well, twelve or about twelve years ago. He was an
[5:21] Speaker 5: assistant of something in the chemistry department. He was ambitious
[5:25] Speaker 5: but not very successful, and then there was an explosion
[5:28] Speaker 5: in it. Well it affected him. Oh, doctors say that
[5:32] Speaker 5: he's borrowed more than his time by now. Can't stand
[5:35] Speaker 5: in his strain or undue shark or too much heat.
[5:39] Speaker 4: Why is he in hospital?
[5:40] Speaker 5: Well? Oh good heavens. The college gives him his pension
[5:43] Speaker 5: and he has his choice. And after all they say,
[5:46] Speaker 5: I take better care of him here in the boarding
[5:48] Speaker 5: house than they could. Now you come right inside. Now
[5:51] Speaker 5: fix your lemonade. While I finished taking my cookies.
[5:54] Speaker 3: Say where is Delbert, missus Packlay.
[5:56] Speaker 5: Oh, he's down at the ice plant getting some salt
[5:58] Speaker 5: for the ice cream freezer. He the other rumor, the
[6:01] Speaker 5: other room, mister Stevenson, he travels in jewelry, you know.
[6:05] Speaker 5: But I've boarded him a week.
[6:07] Speaker 4: Missus Packleck, your brother didn't tell us about your husband.
[6:11] Speaker 4: I excuse me.
[6:16] Speaker 5: Tom passed away, you know, in six months, But I
[6:19] Speaker 5: still get a little shocker. Oh I'm oh, no, no, no,
[6:23] Speaker 5: it's just silly of me. It's just well, I well,
[6:27] Speaker 5: on a holiday, people can't help wishing for the things
[6:30] Speaker 5: of the past, can they.
[6:33] Speaker 3: No, No, I guess not. But holiday today and you
[6:38] Speaker 3: mentioned a picnic? Can me that cookie?
[6:39] Speaker 5: Kind of Oh it's the welcoming, that's all for the faculty.
[6:42] Speaker 5: None of us are really connected with the college.
[6:45] Speaker 4: But you see next week's.
[6:46] Speaker 5: Registration, and that's how all of us in this town
[6:49] Speaker 5: make a living off the college.
[6:51] Speaker 3: Folks are we parade.
[6:52] Speaker 5: And turn out the town band and have potato races.
[6:57] Speaker 4: I guess we just.
[6:57] Speaker 5: Try to pretend that we're part of it, to pretend
[7:01] Speaker 5: that there's some excitement in our lives. That it isn't
[7:04] Speaker 5: true that nothing ever really happens in Mayville.
[7:20] Speaker 3: Hot hot suspender whether I call it, But now down
[7:23] Speaker 3: the facts. Who's gonna win the Coast Conference USC? Or
[7:26] Speaker 3: is Washington gonna end? Well? Uh, what do you say
[7:28] Speaker 3: we hold up the sports page? Mister Hannigan? You wrote
[7:30] Speaker 3: us a letter and you said your little sister had
[7:33] Speaker 3: more money than is good for any woman. My friend,
[7:35] Speaker 3: she's got forty thousand smackaroos. How do you like that?
[7:38] Speaker 4: Oh? Where'd you get it?
[7:39] Speaker 3: Life insurance? That crazy, no good husband of hers, dumb
[7:42] Speaker 3: that's all he was, and got himself killed dragging his
[7:45] Speaker 3: own shotgun backward through a fence.
[7:47] Speaker 4: You see what I mean?
[7:47] Speaker 3: Uh huh, I see you didn't think much of him. Well,
[7:51] Speaker 3: he paid the premiums. But a waster, that's all he was.
[7:53] Speaker 3: Never turned a liqu of work. That Titia slave hers
[7:56] Speaker 3: up up to the elbow. She still does it. Orton's
[7:58] Speaker 3: students who can't pay their bills. Nurse and all the
[8:00] Speaker 3: characters like that scientific earbander back there in the hammock
[8:03] Speaker 3: by the meadow girl like my sister, ought to get
[8:05] Speaker 3: out more sure to travel like I do, see the world.
[8:08] Speaker 3: But she she makes the wrong kind of friends, you said,
[8:11] Speaker 3: the kind that ought to be in prison, the kind
[8:13] Speaker 3: that leads to crashes at the end of the line. Now,
[8:17] Speaker 3: just who is that you're so worried about? The other rumor?
[8:20] Speaker 3: My friend?
[8:21] Speaker 4: You guessed it?
[8:22] Speaker 3: Stevenson, Rick Stevenson. He calls himself. He's been here one
[8:25] Speaker 3: week and he's butting her up, already guttering her. Sure,
[8:28] Speaker 3: sure he knows his stuff all right. First he goes
[8:30] Speaker 3: to work, getting next to that guy Adams, But he's
[8:33] Speaker 3: really aiming a tissue, don't you kid yourself? Okay, okay,
[8:36] Speaker 3: so the boarder's making passes at your sister. So what,
[8:39] Speaker 3: my friend, that man's a phony, a four flush, I
[8:41] Speaker 3: tell you. Listen, Cheseardarr. He says, he's what jewelry selling
[8:46] Speaker 3: fraternity pins if he knows the difference between a du
[8:49] Speaker 3: shield and a brass door knocker. I leave my hat.
[8:51] Speaker 3: I've been around. I can tell I'm a deep myself.
[8:54] Speaker 4: Well, mister Hannigan, supposing he is getting out a phony line.
[8:58] Speaker 4: Your sister's old enough to watch out for her self,
[9:00] Speaker 4: isn't she. What do you expect Doc to do about it?
[9:03] Speaker 3: Whoa, for goodness sakes snoop around. Nailed something on the
[9:06] Speaker 3: nosy fortune on it so we can run him out
[9:08] Speaker 3: of time. He's after Tish's money. I tell you, well,
[9:11] Speaker 3: what of it?
[9:12] Speaker 1: So are you?
[9:12] Speaker 3: Aren't you?
[9:13] Speaker 4: Huh?
[9:13] Speaker 3: Yeah? Isn't that the real idea? Now? How do you
[9:18] Speaker 3: think she should spend it? Close up the boarding house
[9:20] Speaker 3: and the two you go traveling first class? Maybe her
[9:22] Speaker 3: paying the bills. Well, at least I'm a brother, at
[9:25] Speaker 3: least I'm thinking of her place. It's a madam of friend.
[9:29] Speaker 3: Just sill because I got you down here on something
[9:31] Speaker 3: that don't look so important. No, no, no, I kind
[9:33] Speaker 3: of like Maybelle. Only when it comes to listening to stories.
[9:38] Speaker 3: I think I just as soon hear them from little
[9:40] Speaker 3: skinny Adams listen to me.
[10:03] Speaker 4: I actually saw Chinsky.
[10:08] Speaker 6: The biochemist, and burlaslave of nitrogen George, and I.
[10:14] Speaker 3: Said, but still trying to fend people there. Hey, you know, Angel,
[10:20] Speaker 3: we're in the midst of a bunch.
[10:21] Speaker 4: Of them nuts. George look at this. It's so rare.
[10:25] Speaker 4: A man in his condition shouldn't be lying out here
[10:27] Speaker 4: in the sun. George, of course the umbrellas come down.
[10:32] Speaker 3: Yeah, I gotta wake him up.
[10:34] Speaker 6: Okay, mister Adam, Eh, huh is he here?
[10:42] Speaker 4: You haven't been standing there, have you?
[10:44] Speaker 6: But what do you mean I haven't been saying things?
[10:49] Speaker 3: No, no, of course not. We just came out.
[10:51] Speaker 4: Don't you try to me.
[10:52] Speaker 6: I can always tell when the student is lying. And
[10:55] Speaker 6: have you know that I've got every one of my senses.
[10:58] Speaker 6: I was hurting an explosion, I think. But I can see.
[11:02] Speaker 7: The things I see and I can hear by the newtown.
[11:05] Speaker 4: Oh you were just mumbling, mister Adam.
[11:08] Speaker 7: Say anything about the elm tree.
[11:12] Speaker 3: The elm tree?
[11:13] Speaker 7: Oh, come on, come on something, I've seen a man
[11:17] Speaker 7: under the elm tree. No, oh that's good.
[11:23] Speaker 3: He Now who did that? Did that umbrella?
[11:26] Speaker 6: That umbrella was up when I went to sleep.
[11:28] Speaker 8: I know it was takin Cat's probably just slipped down.
[11:35] Speaker 8: Don't get your dander route. Hello you too, I'm Rick Stevenson,
[11:41] Speaker 8: so I gather.
[11:43] Speaker 3: No, I know I've heard all about you. Miss Brooks
[11:46] Speaker 3: here for the holiday. Huh, yeah, that's right. We We
[11:49] Speaker 3: sort of like a quiet college town.
[11:51] Speaker 8: Eh, relief from the city, isn't it? Okay? Come on, skinny,
[11:55] Speaker 8: it's twelve o'clock.
[11:56] Speaker 6: Sure, this is that late already.
[11:58] Speaker 8: We're just gonna wait on the porch there for the
[12:01] Speaker 8: town parade out on the side porch.
[12:03] Speaker 3: Maybe maybe you'd like to join us. Well, thanks, mister Stevenson.
[12:05] Speaker 3: We'll be waiting just a minute, whatever you say. Let's
[12:11] Speaker 3: see about an hour and the sun might kill a
[12:13] Speaker 3: man like Adams, mightn't it.
[12:15] Speaker 4: Well, it's certainly would make him very sick.
[12:18] Speaker 3: Slide up that beach umbrella, will you? Yeah, go on,
[12:21] Speaker 3: go on? Put it up again?
[12:22] Speaker 4: Go ahead, Well all right.
[12:23] Speaker 7: I'll try it.
[12:30] Speaker 3: There. Yes, Angel, it's all you can do to force
[12:36] Speaker 3: that catch. It couldn't slip. Somebody pushed it.
[12:40] Speaker 4: Down, George. They're all outside now, Yeah, okay. Look what
[12:57] Speaker 4: if mister Stevenson guesses that we've been in his room.
[13:00] Speaker 3: Oh well, I'll worry about that later. He tried the closet,
[13:02] Speaker 3: were you Okay? But they smoked this fire. Angel, We've
[13:05] Speaker 3: got to work fast on a few sparks that we
[13:07] Speaker 3: know about.
[13:07] Speaker 4: Bill.
[13:08] Speaker 5: I agree.
[13:09] Speaker 4: Company's trying to turn well and faculty into Memorial Day. Oh,
[13:13] Speaker 4: but it seems so impossible that poor harmless Nay, I
[13:18] Speaker 4: don't see why anybody would want it.
[13:20] Speaker 3: That's a matter. What is it?
[13:23] Speaker 4: A letter was in the pocket of.
[13:25] Speaker 3: Rick Sportsch huh Well, suspender weather has one benefit Federal.
[13:30] Speaker 4: State's Life insurance company. It says it was just a nose,
[13:35] Speaker 4: it says Stevenson. On February fourteenth, the company paid forty
[13:39] Speaker 4: thousand dollars to Missus Packler, a husband died in a
[13:42] Speaker 4: hunting accident. Suggests you look into it. But Rick Stevenson
[13:47] Speaker 4: must be an insurance in deskin.
[13:48] Speaker 3: I see that. Yeah, it is a clipping in the
[13:52] Speaker 3: same envelope. It's an old one. Mayville, Herold, March twenty first.
[13:57] Speaker 3: Our time was grieved to hear of the unfort and
[14:00] Speaker 3: death of mister Tom Packler. His shotgun was accidentally discharged
[14:04] Speaker 3: as he was crossing a fence near his own back
[14:06] Speaker 3: property line, just half a mile from his own house.
[14:09] Speaker 3: Tom died in the meadow he loved so well under
[14:12] Speaker 3: the familiar canopy of the book scene under the elm trees.
[14:32] Speaker 3: We'll return to tonight's adventure of George Valentine in just
[14:35] Speaker 3: a moment. What do you think you'll be wearing when
[14:38] Speaker 3: cool autumn days turn up? Maybe a tweed suit or
[14:41] Speaker 3: a woolen win and next winter an overcoat and a
[14:44] Speaker 3: raincoat during the wet spring. Sure you're climate tailored. But
[14:48] Speaker 3: here's the surprising thing. Chevron Supreme gasoline is also climate tailored.
[14:53] Speaker 3: It's scientifically blended according to the west, different altitude and
[14:56] Speaker 3: temperature zones, and according to the season. That's why was
[15:00] Speaker 3: Chevrons Supreme in the tank. You can be sure of
[15:02] Speaker 3: peak performance wherever you drive the year round. Drive tomorrow,
[15:06] Speaker 3: and right away you'll notice your car's quick response to
[15:09] Speaker 3: this premium quality gasoline. Faster starts, faster pickup in traffic,
[15:14] Speaker 3: and smoother ping, free power on hills. You'll find you
[15:17] Speaker 3: can't buy a better gasoline for today's high compression engines.
[15:21] Speaker 3: So to give your car it's best chance, give it
[15:23] Speaker 3: climate tailored Chevron Supreme. Ask for it at independent Chevron
[15:27] Speaker 3: gas stations and at standard stations where they say and
[15:30] Speaker 3: mean we take better care of your car. Now back
[15:49] Speaker 3: to tonight's adventure of George Valentine. You meet a frail,
[15:53] Speaker 3: harmless little man who's only a fence. Is boring people?
[15:57] Speaker 3: Or is it He's apparently so dangerous to someone one
[16:00] Speaker 3: that an attempt has been made on his life in
[16:02] Speaker 3: the other roomor in Missus Packler's boarding house, Rick Stevenson.
[16:05] Speaker 3: First he seemed to be only interested in Missus Pagler's money,
[16:09] Speaker 3: but now Rick seems to be an insurance investigator interested
[16:12] Speaker 3: in her husband's death. Well, if you're anything like George Valentine,
[16:16] Speaker 3: you know there's a lot more going on in little
[16:19] Speaker 3: Mayfield and talk about ice cream football?
[16:23] Speaker 4: Won't you have some more?
[16:24] Speaker 5: Miss Brooke?
[16:25] Speaker 4: Oh no, thank you, Missus Peckler.
[16:26] Speaker 3: Really, you know last year I had six dishes of
[16:29] Speaker 3: ice cream and still went out to the picnic kick
[16:31] Speaker 3: of football father than the coaches. I won the Sackras
[16:34] Speaker 3: to remember.
[16:35] Speaker 6: Oh Sacrie, Tom packerck carriage you all away from me?
[16:38] Speaker 3: I remember he did not just because he listened to
[16:41] Speaker 3: you ramble. I'm trying to make yourself important, make people
[16:44] Speaker 3: listen to nothing. All the famous scientists you saw that
[16:47] Speaker 3: nobody ever heard of brother Slakinsky to prisel it. You know,
[16:51] Speaker 3: Valentine Tish's husband was the only man in town too
[16:54] Speaker 3: lazy to stop this, this record of Haspers from hell.
[16:57] Speaker 5: But please, you've been drinking.
[17:00] Speaker 3: Gosh, what's the celebration for if you can't take it.
[17:02] Speaker 7: Under the elm tree?
[17:05] Speaker 3: What's that? What's that's? Kidney one? Professor?
[17:10] Speaker 8: I think you and I better take a little stroll
[17:12] Speaker 8: outside for the rain.
[17:14] Speaker 5: Yes, thank you, mister pet What on earth is the
[17:17] Speaker 5: matter with everybody?
[17:18] Speaker 4: Miss Brooks?
[17:19] Speaker 5: Is still an hour before the picnic?
[17:21] Speaker 3: Missus Pankler, I think we'd like to take a little
[17:23] Speaker 3: walk ourselves. If you don't want it, of course, Yes,
[17:25] Speaker 3: I have a couple of things I want to take
[17:26] Speaker 3: up down at the drug store.
[17:27] Speaker 4: Oh okay, George, see you later.
[17:32] Speaker 3: The last angel. What's thunder in the air for me?
[17:36] Speaker 6: You're gonna fall inside?
[17:37] Speaker 3: Ash letter?
[17:38] Speaker 5: Split that flag?
[17:39] Speaker 3: Oh?
[17:41] Speaker 6: I'm still keeping flags? The recular heads is still good
[17:45] Speaker 6: for some job?
[17:46] Speaker 4: Why? Of course you're the gratitude.
[17:48] Speaker 3: Sure sure. First thing I noticed about the old house
[17:50] Speaker 3: here was that flag hanging up there on the balcony
[17:52] Speaker 3: of your room.
[17:53] Speaker 6: It used to be on the grounds and flowers for
[17:55] Speaker 6: many for a while before that. Maybe there was only
[17:58] Speaker 6: a system in the chemistry.
[17:59] Speaker 3: But a minute, you know what I noticed about your flag?
[18:03] Speaker 3: Although ahead, take a look at it. The blue field,
[18:05] Speaker 3: mister Adams. It's in the wrong direction. Your flag up
[18:09] Speaker 3: there is backwards.
[18:12] Speaker 5: You should excuse me, poor guy.
[18:19] Speaker 3: Well, at least we're a longe again.
[18:20] Speaker 4: Come on, Angel, okay, George, what do you wanted? The drugs?
[18:24] Speaker 3: The telephone one that's in a booth instead of a
[18:26] Speaker 3: public hallway. I'm going to talk to the.
[18:28] Speaker 4: Police about Tom packs his death six months that's right,
[18:31] Speaker 4: we are tenn.
[18:31] Speaker 3: And Riley in the city. Can run a fast check
[18:33] Speaker 3: for me. The insurance company's angle everything about it. Come on,
[18:36] Speaker 3: we'll cut across the back of the house.
[18:39] Speaker 4: Well, if Rick Stevenson is their investigator, they certainly must
[18:42] Speaker 4: suspect that it wasn't just a shot gun Ax.
[18:44] Speaker 3: You are so right, Angel, or he wouldn't be here. Besides,
[18:48] Speaker 3: the clipping said Packler died under those elm trees, and
[18:51] Speaker 3: Skinny's got a secret about what he saw under the
[18:53] Speaker 3: elm trees.
[18:56] Speaker 4: Where you can just see the trees from his hammock
[18:58] Speaker 4: at the edge of the meadow. Or somebody's taking down
[19:01] Speaker 4: that umbrella. Must have been an attempt to get rid
[19:03] Speaker 4: of him before he tells what he knows to Stephen, and.
[19:06] Speaker 3: It's not hard to get rid of him. And then
[19:08] Speaker 3: he didn't get Renny a helpless little child.
[19:11] Speaker 4: George, Wait a minute, what wouldn't this be the packer's woodshed?
[19:17] Speaker 3: Sure?
[19:17] Speaker 4: I guess so well. This piece of wood. It's the
[19:21] Speaker 4: same color, the same shape, the same as those things
[19:24] Speaker 4: on the front of the house, the balcony railing.
[19:27] Speaker 3: The post that hold the railing up, and to reach.
[19:29] Speaker 4: The flag you'd have to lean against the red George,
[19:31] Speaker 4: Come on, Angel, Oh look George, you can see it
[19:38] Speaker 4: from here. Why didn't we notice it before? The corner
[19:41] Speaker 4: post is missing.
[19:44] Speaker 3: Stay out here. Watch the skinny on the balcony. I
[19:47] Speaker 3: got to stop him. Hi, I'm sorry, skinny. Did I
[19:59] Speaker 3: heard tell you? All right? Hello?
[20:01] Speaker 5: Young man?
[20:02] Speaker 3: Look, I had to stop you if he leaned against
[20:04] Speaker 3: the railing. The corner supporters off. It's Lucy. Hello, how skinny? Listen?
[20:11] Speaker 3: Listen carefully. Someone was trying to make you fall, have
[20:14] Speaker 3: an accident, kill you. Now you know something, and you've
[20:17] Speaker 3: got to tell me you saw something out under the elmfreeze.
[20:21] Speaker 3: What did you see my ram today?
[20:24] Speaker 4: Oh Lord, George.
[20:26] Speaker 3: Brooks, you're gonna guide this guy with your life. I've
[20:28] Speaker 3: got work to do, Okay, Angel, how.
[20:39] Speaker 4: Is this sleep? George? Did you get Lieutenant Rider.
[20:43] Speaker 3: Yeah, my drug store, Riley has a man checking local
[20:46] Speaker 3: police insurance company. The man will get in touch with me.
[20:48] Speaker 4: Heah, well, what about Rick Seeds.
[20:51] Speaker 3: I don't know. I didn't see him out nursing his
[20:53] Speaker 3: jawn swearing at me.
[20:55] Speaker 4: I guess, George, this time we ought to be able
[20:57] Speaker 4: to tell who did it. I've been putting the flag backward,
[20:59] Speaker 4: them fixing that ring.
[21:00] Speaker 3: Whoever's trying to get this guy is taking advantage of circumstances,
[21:03] Speaker 3: same as with the umbrella. So if we ask around,
[21:06] Speaker 3: all will get his conflicting stories into the niles from
[21:08] Speaker 3: the gilly one. Wait a minute, well.
[21:14] Speaker 4: Tisher?
[21:15] Speaker 5: Hello, yeah, who did you?
[21:21] Speaker 8: Oh Titcher Fish?
[21:23] Speaker 4: What is that?
[21:24] Speaker 3: Oh?
[21:24] Speaker 5: I don't know. It's long distance. I don't know who
[21:26] Speaker 5: they won't talk to. It's the police, I think, but
[21:28] Speaker 5: must be.
[21:29] Speaker 8: Wrong now, No, no, give me that.
[21:32] Speaker 1: Give it to me that that calls for me.
[21:35] Speaker 3: It's nothing important really, it's just.
[21:38] Speaker 8: Yes, hello, oh yes, oh, this is he speaking. You
[21:47] Speaker 8: did I get it? Yeah, thank you very much.
[21:52] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[21:53] Speaker 8: I guess that winds it up. Well, Fisher, where did
[21:58] Speaker 8: you go?
[21:59] Speaker 6: Fisher?
[22:00] Speaker 4: Hmmm, so Stephenson is in touch with the police too.
[22:05] Speaker 3: Angel I think maybe now we can stop being suckers.
[22:10] Speaker 3: That call was for me. Yes, that's right, Operator, I
[22:19] Speaker 3: was disconnected. We'll hurry it up. Will you get my
[22:23] Speaker 3: party back? Police in the city, We'll hurry it up.
[22:38] Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Skinny, we'll have to lock you up, but
[22:40] Speaker 3: you'll be all right. Godly, George, I'll tell you later. Angel.
[22:45] Speaker 3: Where's del Hannaghan?
[22:46] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[22:48] Speaker 3: Hey, we're too late. That wasn't thunder around this way?
[22:57] Speaker 3: Brooksi the place Packler kept his gun?
[23:00] Speaker 4: Who the shop? Must have been here in the woodshat
[23:05] Speaker 4: hol it rit demons.
[23:10] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he's dead. Oh here comes the rain.
[23:17] Speaker 4: Well, George. Whoever killed him must have left here just
[23:20] Speaker 4: a second ago? Maybe? Who was out of the shedding?
[23:24] Speaker 3: Its screen jaw and its back in the house. Now, okay,
[23:29] Speaker 3: come on Angel. From here on it's easy. There's only
[23:33] Speaker 3: one person that can be Hello, missus Packley getting dry.
[23:55] Speaker 5: I was out for just a moment. Of clothes on
[23:59] Speaker 5: the line, clothes, Please please get out of the kitchen.
[24:02] Speaker 5: I take the cookers out and wrapped them.
[24:04] Speaker 3: For the picnic.
[24:05] Speaker 5: Please they'll get cold if I don't.
[24:08] Speaker 3: But I'm sorry, Missus Packler. But let's call me a detective. Okay,
[24:16] Speaker 3: you've got to sit down now. Why did you do it?
[24:21] Speaker 5: You found Stephenson?
[24:24] Speaker 3: He was coming to get after he talked on the phone,
[24:27] Speaker 3: and he came looking in the woodshed, the place where
[24:29] Speaker 3: your dead husband's were, where the shotgun that killed your
[24:32] Speaker 3: husband was.
[24:33] Speaker 4: What's the matter? Were you afraid mister Stevenson would find
[24:35] Speaker 4: that shotgun examine it for evidence of I don't know.
[24:38] Speaker 5: He was coming together and I had to kill it. Why,
[24:40] Speaker 5: missus Packler, Oh, I was putting his pressure in in
[24:42] Speaker 5: a way yesterday when I found an envelope insurance company
[24:46] Speaker 5: note about me clipping him bout Thom's day. Yes, we know,
[24:49] Speaker 5: I'd guessed before he was up to something. So many
[24:52] Speaker 5: questions about me, And he wasn't a juryman like you
[24:55] Speaker 5: said he was. He spent so much time getting close
[24:58] Speaker 5: to poor little skinny head asking him questions.
[25:01] Speaker 4: Were a little skinny, Adam, that's a strange way for.
[25:04] Speaker 7: You to tell me.
[25:05] Speaker 5: The Lord forgiven it. Skinny hasn't much longer to live anywhere.
[25:09] Speaker 3: I could have killed him by the accident, sure, sure
[25:12] Speaker 3: like the umbrella or the flag. Because you were afraid
[25:15] Speaker 3: he knew something, wouldn't you?
[25:16] Speaker 5: He did under the elm tree to keep saying. Man, Now,
[25:20] Speaker 5: sooner or later, you'd tell mister Stevens, tell him he's
[25:22] Speaker 5: seen me shooting my husband.
[25:33] Speaker 3: Missus Packley. I don't know what it was, skinny saw
[25:37] Speaker 3: way out under the elms, but it couldn't have been
[25:40] Speaker 3: much shit. He brags about retaining his sense. Well, if ever,
[25:45] Speaker 3: there's a man in this town who'd have learned how
[25:47] Speaker 3: to hang the flag, he's the one. But when it
[25:50] Speaker 3: was backwards, I had to tell him so he couldn't see.
[25:55] Speaker 3: Don't you understand, Missus Packley. He'd been out there dozens
[25:59] Speaker 3: of times admiring, but he couldn't see that far.
[26:03] Speaker 5: What do you mean?
[26:04] Speaker 3: I mean? There was never any real evidence against you
[26:07] Speaker 3: concerning your husband. You did commit a perfect crime, perfect
[26:11] Speaker 3: except for a guilty conscience. But mister Stevens, I know,
[26:14] Speaker 3: I know a note that said Stevenson, missus Packler's got
[26:17] Speaker 3: some money. Husband, Dad suggests you look into it. Well,
[26:21] Speaker 3: Rick Stevenson just had a friend at the insurance company,
[26:23] Speaker 3: that's all, a friend who tipped him off. Oh you lie,
[26:26] Speaker 3: you No, you didn't need to shoot Rick. Nobody's ever
[26:31] Speaker 3: guessed you killed your husband. Rick Stevenson was exactly what
[26:35] Speaker 3: your brother guessed. He was a confidence man. Missus packler
[26:40] Speaker 3: out after a widow's money.
[26:54] Speaker 4: George, you know there's one thing I still don't understand, Angel.
[27:00] Speaker 4: I mean, Skinny did see something the elm trees. He
[27:04] Speaker 4: kept saying, brooks.
[27:06] Speaker 3: He maybe I got that one figured out too. All
[27:08] Speaker 3: poor Skinny wants is for someone to like him, for
[27:11] Speaker 3: people to listen. And all days been acting as though
[27:14] Speaker 3: he had a secret, as though he'd cooked up a surprise.
[27:17] Speaker 7: Well my idea surprise surprise. No no, no, no, no,
[27:21] Speaker 7: mister Valentine, I just finally learned something. And you know,
[27:28] Speaker 7: people don't like to listen to people unless people tell people.
[27:32] Speaker 3: What people want to listen to.
[27:34] Speaker 4: Oh oh is that so?
[27:36] Speaker 6: Even if you have to make it out now, there
[27:41] Speaker 6: was this man I saw once out under some elm tree.
[27:46] Speaker 3: Oh, come on, come on, come on. I don't know
[27:48] Speaker 3: that part of it. Yes, but it's false seasons.
[27:51] Speaker 4: But who who did you see?
[27:54] Speaker 3: Wellness?
[27:55] Speaker 7: That time I saw newt rock men standing under the.
[28:19] Speaker 3: Here we are with summer already gone according to the calendar,
[28:23] Speaker 3: So maybe it's a good time to take another look
[28:25] Speaker 3: at your annual budget. One place you won't want a
[28:28] Speaker 3: skimp is in buying protection for your car's engine. In
[28:32] Speaker 3: the long run, it would need to a costly repair bill,
[28:35] Speaker 3: especially since it's a proven fact that internal engine rust
[28:38] Speaker 3: is responsible for eighty percent of engine wear. This damage
[28:42] Speaker 3: is caused by acid laden moisture, which attacks cylinder walls
[28:47] Speaker 3: and other vital parts the moment you cut the ignition.
[28:50] Speaker 3: And here's where RPM motor oil comes in with a
[28:53] Speaker 3: sure helping hand. Premium quality RPM contains compounds that keep
[28:59] Speaker 3: a moisture proof oil film on all vital parts. With
[29:03] Speaker 3: RPM on the job, rust can't get started even though
[29:05] Speaker 3: your car stands idle for days or weeks. So to
[29:09] Speaker 3: protect your engine with long range economy, start using RPM
[29:13] Speaker 3: motor oil tomorrow now wonder it's first choice in the West.
[29:16] Speaker 3: It's the oil that stops eighty percent of engine wear.
[29:20] Speaker 3: Ask for our PM at standard stations and at independent
[29:23] Speaker 3: Chevron gas stations where they say and mean we take
[29:28] Speaker 3: better care of your car. Next week, as we find
[29:42] Speaker 3: George Valentine and Brooksy calling on a new client who
[29:45] Speaker 3: has written for help. Oh sure, guy writes me, a
[29:52] Speaker 3: let end suddenly dead.
[29:54] Speaker 4: Oh god, you can still get the smell of a
[29:57] Speaker 4: gun being fired in here, Court.
[29:59] Speaker 3: I ja, that smells like it meant fire just a
[30:02] Speaker 3: minute or two ago. Hey, wait a minute, Brooks, take
[30:06] Speaker 3: a look at the prystol?
[30:09] Speaker 4: Are there even a shell? Miss George? What do we do?
[30:13] Speaker 3: What do we do? All we have to do is
[30:15] Speaker 3: find out how a man can be shot dead without
[30:18] Speaker 3: a bullet. The Night's Adventure of George Valentine has been
[30:49] Speaker 3: brought to you by Standard of California, on behalf of
[30:52] Speaker 3: independent Chevron Gas stations and Standard stations throughout the West.

[31:54] Speaker 2: I had a lot of twist and They really kept
[31:58] Speaker 2: my mind working over Tom trying to guess where this
[32:01] Speaker 2: mystery was gonna turn. I had my suspicions about the
[32:05] Speaker 2: wife early on, but I got turned about in so
[32:08] Speaker 2: many directions. So this was a well crafted mystery. It's
[32:11] Speaker 2: a really great story and some very key parts played
[32:17] Speaker 2: in this by Brooksy. If it weren't for her being there,
[32:21] Speaker 2: the old Professor would have died. So nice save indeed, Well,

[32:49] Speaker 2: insights into the old Masters. Well, thanks so much. And
[32:52] Speaker 2: I don't think that has been a challenge with a
[32:54] Speaker 2: lot of the over the air distribution of the old
[32:56] Speaker 2: time radio is they tend to get so awful time
[33:01] Speaker 2: slots to be able to broadcast that people don't even
[33:04] Speaker 2: have a chance to be exposed to them. So internet
[33:08] Speaker 2: definitely helps a lot with that. I do encourage you
[33:12] Speaker 2: if you do download the show through iTunes to rate
[33:15] Speaker 2: us on iTunes, you don't have to write a review.
[33:18] Speaker 2: We've had about five people had the ratings and one review,
[33:23] Speaker 2: so thanks for everybody who's done that. Then also we
[33:26] Speaker 2: have a review for the Android app. Matthew says, finally
[33:30] Speaker 2: an app that I will use. If you love old
[33:33] Speaker 2: detective shows, get this app. Well, thanks so much, Matthew,
