[1:36] Speaker 1: From March twenty second, nineteen fifty two, here is the
[1:41] Speaker 1: John Mooney murder case.
[1:56] Speaker 2: Broadways might beat sometimes Square to Columbus Circle, the gaudiest,
[2:01] Speaker 2: the most violent, the lonesomest, mile.
[2:04] Speaker 3: In the world.
[2:10] Speaker 4: Broadways might be with Larry Thor as Detective Daddy Klober.
[2:26] Speaker 2: Springtime begins to search through Broadway and its gentle winds,
[2:30] Speaker 2: feel out the places to set up shop, the pushcots
[2:33] Speaker 2: of the flower vendors, where the promises are wrapped in
[2:35] Speaker 2: tight by the faint color, a child's ribbon, silken hair
[2:39] Speaker 2: side across the winter pinched face, a woman's shoulders too
[2:43] Speaker 2: soon eager to shed, the raiment of winter's night. In
[2:47] Speaker 2: the spring songs choked out of loudspeakers, in the inviting
[2:50] Speaker 2: sidelong glance, in the barefoot padding through sunwarm corridors. Here
[2:55] Speaker 2: is spring for Broadway. Innocent nostalgic is the music of
[3:00] Speaker 2: organ grinder, to which monkeys stands, to which Broadway size
[3:05] Speaker 2: remembers prize again. And at the edge of the march
[3:13] Speaker 2: evening against the shimmering of dusk, the anger of a man,
[3:16] Speaker 2: the near hysteria, the economy sized fury of innocence malign.
[3:20] Speaker 5: It's an outrage, a shame of filthy shame, the way
[3:25] Speaker 5: you please have nothing better than do and drag off
[3:27] Speaker 5: a man off the street and push him and beat him,
[3:29] Speaker 5: and people standing around and sniffs the same thing.
[3:33] Speaker 6: You might as well have. What am I doing here?
[3:36] Speaker 6: What am I doing?
[3:36] Speaker 7: In a messy room with a detective and a girl
[3:40] Speaker 7: with a sketch pad me? A man with two kids,
[3:43] Speaker 7: an overworked wife nags at me when I'm late for supper,
[3:46] Speaker 7: late for anything?
[3:48] Speaker 8: Everything I ever got?
[3:49] Speaker 6: I sweat for you, hear.
[3:50] Speaker 8: Me, Make it easy, mister Grey, I miss, I'm in.
[3:53] Speaker 5: The thieves door, see on buying for my lawns, my
[3:56] Speaker 5: rose which siege you know?
[3:58] Speaker 8: Bigger and a rape?
[3:59] Speaker 6: And walk out and a man grabs messed me drop
[4:02] Speaker 6: things in the street. He brings me here. Why tell
[4:04] Speaker 6: me what crime I've come in?
[4:05] Speaker 9: And you can tell me.
[4:07] Speaker 2: You passed a bill in a bank early this afternoon,
[4:09] Speaker 2: mister Grace, A thousand dollars bill?
[4:11] Speaker 8: Where'd you get it?
[4:11] Speaker 4: I got it?
[4:12] Speaker 6: The bank said it was good, didn't they? Then? Who
[4:15] Speaker 6: are you have to stick your nosey? And I got it.
[4:17] Speaker 2: We're a man who sweats for everything he gets. How
[4:19] Speaker 2: much sweat for that thousand, mister Grace? A bill the
[4:23] Speaker 2: bank recognized from serial numbers as one from a five
[4:25] Speaker 2: year old payroll robbery where a pay messenger was murdered.
[4:28] Speaker 2: How much sweat for it, mister Gray, you know when.
[4:30] Speaker 6: You're talking about I bought it.
[4:32] Speaker 7: I bought it from a man on forty fifteen Broadway.
[4:35] Speaker 7: He said I could have it for two hundred and
[4:36] Speaker 7: fifty dollars.
[4:37] Speaker 6: I laughed in his face.
[4:38] Speaker 8: But you bought it and sold well.
[4:40] Speaker 7: I laughed in his face at first, but when he
[4:42] Speaker 7: said he'd go to the bank with me and proved
[4:44] Speaker 7: to me it was good.
[4:45] Speaker 8: This man was he Less Chaining.
[4:47] Speaker 9: I don't know who he was.
[4:48] Speaker 6: I never saw him before.
[4:50] Speaker 2: Maybe I can freshen it for you, mister Grace. Cheney
[4:52] Speaker 2: was a man we believed responsible for the robbery and murder.
[4:55] Speaker 2: We couldn't prove it though. We never found the money,
[4:58] Speaker 2: but he was set up for a possession of narcotic
[5:00] Speaker 2: He's out now. Less Cheney tell you that, I don't
[5:04] Speaker 2: know maybe it was him. I told you I never
[5:07] Speaker 2: saw the man before.
[5:09] Speaker 7: A thousand dollars almost nothing. Wouldn't you about it? Let's
[5:14] Speaker 7: pretend we're friends. Yew it about it, Miss Holland. Here's
[5:18] Speaker 7: an artist, mister Grace. She'll sketch a drawing while they
[5:21] Speaker 7: described the man A sold you the bill.
[5:23] Speaker 8: Go ahead, mister, but.
[5:24] Speaker 6: I thought she was doing a drawing of me, I
[5:25] Speaker 6: thought described him well.
[5:28] Speaker 8: Described well.
[5:29] Speaker 7: They had kind of a thin, smirky faces, pinched nose,
[5:34] Speaker 7: kind of washed out eyes.
[5:35] Speaker 9: It was blue.
[5:36] Speaker 6: I think they bulged out a little bit.
[5:38] Speaker 9: And you getting.
[5:40] Speaker 2: Don't worry about her, mister Gray. She'll get if you're
[5:42] Speaker 2: just go on.
[5:42] Speaker 7: Ye. Well, his hat was kind of slouched down on
[5:45] Speaker 7: his floor, and he distinguishing marks like a scar and anything.
[5:49] Speaker 6: No, no, there was no scar. I noticed he needed
[5:51] Speaker 6: a shape.
[5:52] Speaker 7: But then I guess they old you that type kind
[5:55] Speaker 7: of a loose mouth, something like a bird dog.
[5:58] Speaker 6: Yeah, that's it.
[5:58] Speaker 8: The sad eyes and they sniffing around. But that's all
[6:01] Speaker 8: I remember. Now, what else do you want? Not to
[6:03] Speaker 8: go on this? Hoellen goodness?
[6:06] Speaker 2: Call your wife, mister Grace, tell her you'll be real late.
[6:08] Speaker 2: We're holding you on suspicion.
[6:10] Speaker 6: You do that, You do that after the way I cooperated?
[6:14] Speaker 9: Oh you shut me in?
[6:15] Speaker 6: And then you do who were you?
[6:17] Speaker 10: Caned?
[6:18] Speaker 9: Who cared?
[6:26] Speaker 2: And watch the protest dian his throw, the shoulders, slump,
[6:30] Speaker 2: his face fall apart, and reassemble in the shock. Myron
[6:33] Speaker 2: Dray citizen, family man, provider of wife and children and
[6:36] Speaker 2: a lawn and rose bushes. Suddenly a new identification, a
[6:40] Speaker 2: name on a police blotter beheld for further questioning and
[6:44] Speaker 2: connection with the murder. So turn him over to the
[6:46] Speaker 2: sergeant and the artist and leave.
[6:56] Speaker 8: Routine. Now another reading of.

[12:44] Speaker 2: No, Sylvia lives here, Miss Carson. This room belongs to
[12:47] Speaker 2: a man of selling hot money. You heard about it
[12:49] Speaker 2: and came to buy from him. You're greedy for easy money,
[12:51] Speaker 2: miss Carson.
[12:52] Speaker 10: It's a proverb for the red head's money comes easy,
[12:55] Speaker 10: goes easy.
[12:56] Speaker 9: Who needs to.
[12:57] Speaker 10: Walk the length of a grimy hall for it? Wait

[13:14] Speaker 10: A half minute, a whole minute? Maybe before you knock?
[13:18] Speaker 10: As the teenage boys in the front siol they all
[13:21] Speaker 10: noticed my entry commented too, when.
[13:23] Speaker 9: The time is best.
[13:24] Speaker 8: You don't know anything about the man who lives here?
[13:27] Speaker 10: Do I want to look?
[13:29] Speaker 9: Could that be him? That walking down in the doorway?
[13:32] Speaker 9: Could that be him?
[13:38] Speaker 2: He fell before I could get to him, fell in
[13:40] Speaker 2: a limp, loose way of men who were already dead.
[13:43] Speaker 2: His hands were wet with the flow of his blood
[13:45] Speaker 2: where it held the bullet wound.
[13:47] Speaker 8: His mouth shaped a word.
[13:49] Speaker 2: Then it two was gone, the death wound, the silence.
[13:54] Speaker 2: This was what was left of a man whose picture
[13:56] Speaker 2: I carried, who sold blood, money to rose fancy years,
[14:00] Speaker 2: to pillow salesmen, who died for it, been murdered for it.
[14:16] Speaker 4: You are listening to Broadways My Beat, written by Morton
[14:19] Speaker 4: Fine and David Freakin and starring Larry Thor as Detective
[14:23] Speaker 4: Danny Klober. Every day of the year, the Red Cross
[14:27] Speaker 4: is helping humanity somewhere. Servicemen rely on it. Disaster victims
[14:31] Speaker 4: owe their lives to its prompt health community is everywhere, No,
[14:35] Speaker 4: it's day by day services. All these countless ministries are
[14:39] Speaker 4: financed by your contributions. Won't you enter the call to
[14:43] Speaker 4: make this year's contribution larger than ever?
[14:57] Speaker 2: When the trade winds blow into the Hudson in springtime
[15:00] Speaker 2: comes to Broadway, it's a season of rare enchantment. March
[15:04] Speaker 2: is on its way out, and a few more exes
[15:05] Speaker 2: in the calendar, and it's April. It's a time, kid
[15:09] Speaker 2: for weather talk, for baseball scores from sunny Florida, and
[15:13] Speaker 2: bite your lip against the knowledge of Joda Madge. Won't
[15:15] Speaker 2: see out there in center field anymore, But it's the
[15:18] Speaker 2: good time. The man of the orange juice stand whistles
[15:21] Speaker 2: while he puts the yearly coat of shellac and the coconut.
[15:24] Speaker 2: The fella next to you the coffee counter gives you
[15:27] Speaker 2: half his newspaper. The blonde you met last night calls
[15:30] Speaker 2: you at the office and tells you not to be angry.
[15:33] Speaker 8: To have a smile, kid. It's that time of the year.
[15:41] Speaker 2: But it wasn't smile time where I was it's the
[15:44] Speaker 2: sodden room to be found at the end of all
[15:46] Speaker 2: the sodden corridors in the world, the sand colored walls
[15:50] Speaker 2: enclosing the death of a man, and standing beside him
[15:53] Speaker 2: a girl, and beside him another man. Detective Muggavan names
[15:56] Speaker 2: John Mooney Danny. Let me have it to look around right,
[16:02] Speaker 2: all right, young lady, you said your name is John Carson.
[16:05] Speaker 2: You came here looking for a long lost friend.
[16:07] Speaker 10: Just don't make any difference. A man comes home to
[16:10] Speaker 10: die and.
[16:10] Speaker 9: I happen to be here where he lived. I came
[16:12] Speaker 9: here looking for a friend. What difference does it make?
[16:15] Speaker 9: What's Sylvia?
[16:17] Speaker 10: I don't even remember last night? Know how you forget
[16:21] Speaker 10: some time? You passed by and you say, I think
[16:23] Speaker 10: Sylvia used to live here. Why don't I go in
[16:25] Speaker 10: and find out how she is?
[16:27] Speaker 8: You know, sure a friend of yours used to live here.
[16:30] Speaker 9: No, I'm not sure she looks something like this.
[16:35] Speaker 11: Huh ask if.
[16:36] Speaker 8: She's sure Sylvia lived in New York. Don't worry about it, Mugglement.
[16:40] Speaker 8: Just take a look. How much was taken in that robbery?
[16:46] Speaker 8: Denny fifty thousand? Let me accnscious to see how much
[16:49] Speaker 8: is missing?
[16:49] Speaker 2: No, miss Carson, come here matter, take a look at
[16:55] Speaker 2: the money. Detective Muglin found this drawer. Specify found dollars.
[17:02] Speaker 2: You can go on his cousin nuggle uh huh, follow her,
[17:12] Speaker 2: then walk away from them, walk the tired night streets
[17:15] Speaker 2: of early spring. Here and there a window opened to it,
[17:18] Speaker 2: the soiled curtain floating and floating in.
[17:20] Speaker 8: The darkness, swaying to the dance.
[17:21] Speaker 2: The night disc jockey calls in the unlighted room, brush
[17:25] Speaker 2: shoulders with a straggler who was angered because for an
[17:27] Speaker 2: instant you made him lose his hurried way to know where,
[17:30] Speaker 2: then smiles his forgiveness, because there at the end of
[17:33] Speaker 2: the corner where the street lamp dims, he sees it.
[17:35] Speaker 2: He'll find it again. And then the quiet street where
[17:40] Speaker 2: your room is, where if your lucky Sleep waits to
[17:42] Speaker 2: welcome you. When the first you must rid yourself of
[17:45] Speaker 2: the image of a murdered man who sold money, engraved
[17:48] Speaker 2: with death, of a girl with redhair, who walked or
[17:51] Speaker 2: slapped or laughed, and the shadow that mocked her was
[17:54] Speaker 2: not her own, and sleep is diluted to these things.
[17:59] Speaker 8: Finally Sleep runs.
[18:00] Speaker 2: Out, and at headquarters the next day make a phone
[18:09] Speaker 2: call to less Chainey for routine questioning. He told by
[18:12] Speaker 2: his wife that he'd gone out to an interview for
[18:14] Speaker 2: a job. Tell her that when he came back to
[18:16] Speaker 2: stay home. You might be stopping by later on. Then
[18:19] Speaker 2: it's noon. Your lunch hour is short because Danny Clover speaking,
[18:25] Speaker 2: And Danny.
[18:25] Speaker 13: Get down here that Charles Hotel West twelve.
[18:27] Speaker 8: You got some.
[18:28] Speaker 13: Yeah dead ready a dead jone cars real dead.
[18:44] Speaker 8: Let me through here, me through please, I'm from the police.
[18:47] Speaker 8: But hey, Danny, medical examiners. Take what happened?
[18:55] Speaker 2: Maga And I thought I told you to follow her?
[18:56] Speaker 2: I thought, like, why do you think I'm here? Danny,
[18:58] Speaker 2: tell me what happened. Followed the girl home. That's where
[19:01] Speaker 2: she went when she left that flea bag last night.
[19:04] Speaker 2: She went to her apartment, right to her apartment.
[19:06] Speaker 13: If she hadn't gone straight to her apartment, this wouldn't
[19:08] Speaker 13: be the story. I'm telling you whatld it?
[19:10] Speaker 8: Go on straight to her apartment at two in the morning.
[19:15] Speaker 8: I got Florio to relieve me. I went home straight home.
[19:18] Speaker 13: At nine this morning, just as the girl was leaving.
[19:20] Speaker 8: Her apartment, I relieved Florio.
[19:22] Speaker 13: She went out to breakfast shop, made no phone calls
[19:25] Speaker 13: and came back here about an hour ago for lunch.
[19:28] Speaker 13: She came down here to the lady's lounge. I waited
[19:30] Speaker 13: outside the door. About ten minutes later there was a scream.
[19:33] Speaker 13: The attendant found the girl at a dressing table with
[19:35] Speaker 13: a knife in her back. That's it, people coming in
[19:38] Speaker 13: and going out, you know. Okay, Oh, it's just this, Danny.
[19:42] Speaker 13: This key found it in her bag six oh seven.
[19:47] Speaker 13: It's John Mooney's room, isn't it, Danny?
[19:48] Speaker 8: Yeah, let me have her see around, Detective my girl.
[20:08] Speaker 7: I hope I have chosen the correct moment, Danny.
[20:11] Speaker 8: Huh, what are you talking about? You know, the moment of.
[20:14] Speaker 7: Please disturb or the moment of please do not disturb.
[20:17] Speaker 7: I took a flyer and chose the former. I hope
[20:20] Speaker 7: I have not overstepped the bounds of a twelve year
[20:22] Speaker 7: old Sergeancy, So as you're a better dage, you know
[20:25] Speaker 7: a lot of a sergeant, Danny. All propaganda to the contrary,
[20:28] Speaker 7: notwithstanding a lot of said sergeant. After twelve years, a
[20:31] Speaker 7: faithful and obedient service is not a merry one. Twelve
[20:35] Speaker 7: years is a long way to go to the delicatessent
[20:37] Speaker 7: for sandwiches for the boys twelve years is sticking the
[20:40] Speaker 7: nose in the dusty files, and you'll get your promotions,
[20:43] Speaker 7: you know, ha promotion hack hack, this same stale crumb.
[20:49] Speaker 9: Are you off?
[20:49] Speaker 7: Tossed to the patient stranger at the breaking point, missus Tartaglia,
[20:53] Speaker 7: it is her comment, I just quoted promotion.
[20:57] Speaker 8: It'll go through one of these days, you know.
[21:00] Speaker 6: Must not to flip the lid while waiting.
[21:04] Speaker 7: To work on any if you wish my burden my refuge,
[21:09] Speaker 7: I yeah, And that less Chaney wants suspect the chief
[21:13] Speaker 7: and murder in that payroll robbery of some years former.
[21:17] Speaker 7: He has still not come home. He is still at large,
[21:19] Speaker 7: violating his parole. No doubt you think he's mixed up
[21:22] Speaker 7: in this.
[21:22] Speaker 8: You know, it.
[21:23] Speaker 7: Matters to anyone what a twelve year old sergeant thinks.
[21:26] Speaker 6: Let's proceed, shall we?
[21:28] Speaker 8: Whatever you want?
[21:29] Speaker 9: You know?
[21:30] Speaker 6: And then John Mooney deceized by murder.
[21:32] Speaker 7: That he was a pickpocket whose name was inscribed as
[21:34] Speaker 7: such in our archives practically from the moment of the
[21:37] Speaker 7: laying of the cornerstone.
[21:38] Speaker 8: The key to his room is in Johan Carson's purse.
[21:40] Speaker 8: Were mugg and found?
[21:42] Speaker 6: What?
[21:43] Speaker 8: Oh, just tell me what you got? On John Carson.
[21:45] Speaker 7: I was coming to her, Dernie. Sorry, it's one of
[21:49] Speaker 7: the wounds that leave no apparent scars. How you hire
[21:53] Speaker 7: ups never I said.
[21:54] Speaker 8: I was sorry, you know, accepted, and then.
[21:58] Speaker 7: Joan Carson Murder of Mooney, a girl also with a
[22:02] Speaker 7: record of possession of narcotics in the month of October
[22:06] Speaker 7: the year nineteen forty three, picked up in her apartment
[22:09] Speaker 7: together with one less Cheney by the narcotics Boys. Sentence
[22:12] Speaker 7: third the year on the island with less Cheney, the
[22:14] Speaker 7: same chair, very same. I am the Smiss Lieutenant Geno.
[22:20] Speaker 7: I hope I have been of some service. Good day, Lieutenant,
[22:24] Speaker 7: and good.
[22:24] Speaker 8: Hunting, Danny. I didn't need it, not you. It's the
[22:32] Speaker 8: other You did good, Gina, real good. This is start.
[22:35] Speaker 8: Tagli will be proud of you. Go home. Tell her,
[23:00] Speaker 8: Oh he's Danny Clover. Hun's not right. Let's channing. I've
[23:04] Speaker 8: been waiting for you almost all day. Come I here
[23:10] Speaker 8: he is, Ruthie.
[23:11] Speaker 11: I told us to wait for you, so get it
[23:13] Speaker 11: over with quick. Ruth doesn't mean bless your parole.
[23:17] Speaker 3: Papers say you have to be polite to cops.
[23:19] Speaker 11: Jell me where it says about the hat and the
[23:21] Speaker 11: hands and the bowing, Ruthie, I waited five years for
[23:23] Speaker 11: a man to come back.
[23:24] Speaker 3: Look what came back. What's the matter with you? Less?
[23:27] Speaker 11: You know who he is? One of the brave boys
[23:30] Speaker 11: who planted an envelope.
[23:31] Speaker 3: Of narcotics on you, Ruthie.
[23:32] Speaker 8: They didn't do that. I told you they didn't do it.
[23:35] Speaker 8: I violated a law and I was caught.
[23:38] Speaker 11: You had to memorize that, Speechless, you always had a
[23:40] Speaker 11: poor memory.
[23:41] Speaker 3: What made it stick? Brass knuckles?
[23:45] Speaker 8: Don't mind how, mister Clover? What can I do for you?
[23:48] Speaker 2: You read the papers to see how we finally found
[23:51] Speaker 2: that money that was stolen, that hold up you were
[23:53] Speaker 2: involved in five years ago.
[23:55] Speaker 14: I can't go along with you on that, misteric Clove.
[23:57] Speaker 14: I was never involved in a hold on my error.
[24:01] Speaker 8: The one we picked you up for, the one you
[24:02] Speaker 8: couldn't make stick. Sure.
[24:05] Speaker 14: I admitted my car was used as a getaway care
[24:07] Speaker 14: but it had been stolen.
[24:09] Speaker 11: From him and you couldn't prove otherwise, so you planted
[24:11] Speaker 11: the narcotics on him.
[24:13] Speaker 3: Why are you talking to him last?
[24:14] Speaker 8: Because I have to ut.
[24:18] Speaker 2: That's right. Let's get back to that money Less. I
[24:21] Speaker 2: don't understand why we have to get back down in
[24:23] Speaker 2: the humor. Me huh, yes, I have to do that
[24:27] Speaker 2: to it.
[24:28] Speaker 8: We found it in the man's room. The man's name
[24:30] Speaker 8: was John Mooney, and he had a record as being
[24:32] Speaker 8: a pickpocket. And I were discussing while ago.
[24:36] Speaker 11: Let's read it to me out of the paper, and
[24:37] Speaker 11: I clucked.
[24:39] Speaker 8: I was wondering how he got that money. Less, I
[24:42] Speaker 8: wouldn't know.
[24:42] Speaker 2: I'll tell you how I figure he got the money.
[24:44] Speaker 2: He was a pickpocket, so he picked somebody's pocket.
[24:47] Speaker 8: All that done. He had a day, not really, he.
[24:51] Speaker 11: Got killed for it, so we didn't have a good day.
[24:53] Speaker 3: Go argue with a cop.
[24:54] Speaker 2: We know who killed John Mooney, I said, r Oh,
[25:00] Speaker 2: girl named Joan Carson. She killed him someplace near his hotel.
[25:04] Speaker 2: So because Key went to the room to look for
[25:06] Speaker 2: the money, I found her there.
[25:08] Speaker 14: Clover, Ruthie has missed me for five years and I
[25:11] Speaker 14: only been out of money.
[25:13] Speaker 8: Like we were married all over again. Let me spend
[25:17] Speaker 8: my evenings, said Ruthie. Let's lonely take a little while.
[25:21] Speaker 2: The thing that bothered us less was who Joan Carson
[25:24] Speaker 2: was and how she knew where to find the money.
[25:27] Speaker 9: You know who she was?
[25:28] Speaker 8: You tell me missus Jenney.
[25:30] Speaker 3: You tell him, lest tell him.
[25:34] Speaker 8: Sure.
[25:35] Speaker 14: I once know him, mister Clover a long time ago.
[25:38] Speaker 14: I know a lot of addicts a long time.
[25:41] Speaker 2: It still bothers us less. How she knew where the
[25:43] Speaker 2: money was?
[25:43] Speaker 8: We couldn't find it for five years? How do I
[25:45] Speaker 8: know what she knew?
[25:46] Speaker 2: You're in jail for five years. We never saw a
[25:48] Speaker 2: dollar of that fifty thousand were stolen. You get out
[25:50] Speaker 2: and starts circulating.
[25:52] Speaker 3: We still want to pin it on him.
[25:53] Speaker 9: Huh.
[25:53] Speaker 2: Let me tell both of you how it all ties together.
[25:55] Speaker 2: You did commit that robbery and murder. Less some where
[25:58] Speaker 2: the money was hidden. You get out, get the money,
[26:00] Speaker 2: take it someplace to get rid of it at a discount.
[26:03] Speaker 2: Wise boy like you got his pocket pick. Then the
[26:07] Speaker 2: money starts showing. I don't think you're going to prove
[26:10] Speaker 2: it this time either, glue. That's what held me up
[26:13] Speaker 2: so long. Less a bright boy like you gets his
[26:16] Speaker 2: pocket pick. I couldn't believe it, but I had to
[26:18] Speaker 2: come back to it.
[26:20] Speaker 8: Like I said, you still need proof.
[26:22] Speaker 2: Maybe all right, We've still got another problem problem. How
[26:26] Speaker 2: are we going to get your wife to admit she
[26:28] Speaker 2: killed Joan Carson?
[26:30] Speaker 8: How are we going to do that later, you kidding?
[26:34] Speaker 3: Get him out of your life.
[26:35] Speaker 14: Wait a minute, Clover, how do you figure Ruthie kills you?
[26:40] Speaker 8: Ou'd you figure it less? You figured Ruth? Do you
[26:45] Speaker 8: need help less? Yeah? Yeah, help me.
[26:49] Speaker 2: Your wife kept that fifty thousand for you while you
[26:51] Speaker 2: were in jail. Didn't she hit it someplace?
[26:53] Speaker 8: Tay, get in there. See what happened?
[26:54] Speaker 3: You crazy?
[26:55] Speaker 8: Shut up? Well Glover take it from there.
[26:58] Speaker 2: You got out, You gave your wife that money, then
[27:00] Speaker 2: you lost it. What did you tell your wife when
[27:04] Speaker 2: you lost it?
[27:05] Speaker 3: I told her I lost it, lost it, lost it
[27:08] Speaker 3: to that redhead children, didn't you? Didn't you listen to
[27:15] Speaker 3: me later?
[27:16] Speaker 8: To me what I told you? That money was stolen.
[27:19] Speaker 14: The pickpocket recognized me, call me and try to sell
[27:21] Speaker 14: us back to me.
[27:22] Speaker 8: I didn't have any money to buy it.
[27:24] Speaker 11: And you sent that redhead for it.
[27:25] Speaker 9: Why didn't she send me?
[27:26] Speaker 11: Because I'm not beautiful anymore after waiting for you, because
[27:29] Speaker 11: I don't dip my head in, Hannah, because I don't
[27:32] Speaker 11: on a slip, that's not fraid.
[27:34] Speaker 9: Look what she did to you.
[27:35] Speaker 11: She crossed your killed and was going to keep that
[27:37] Speaker 11: money for her.
[27:37] Speaker 3: Step was going to come back to her. Oh no, oh.
[27:40] Speaker 11: No, that's not her, not Miss Joan carp I took
[27:44] Speaker 11: care of that, sure, killed her, less followed her and
[27:49] Speaker 11: killed her for you for the past five years, for
[27:55] Speaker 11: the years you were going to make up to me,
[27:57] Speaker 11: For the years I lie there with my hands behind
[27:59] Speaker 11: my head, just to me laugh and no one else.
[28:06] Speaker 3: It's the Clover. Yeah, take us away together.
[28:30] Speaker 2: Twilight lies against Broadway like gray speckled gauze, ripples off
[28:35] Speaker 2: into another world. The street of the hurry up steps,
[28:39] Speaker 2: the fast questions, dances, the seekers after the special smile
[28:46] Speaker 2: and you walk it because once Broadway touched you, you.
[28:50] Speaker 8: Can't rub it off.
[28:52] Speaker 2: It's Broadway, the gaudiest, the most violent, the lone almost
[29:00] Speaker 2: mile in the world.
[29:02] Speaker 8: Broadway My Beat.
[29:21] Speaker 4: Broadway's My Beat stars Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover,
[29:25] Speaker 4: with Charles Calvert Astataglia and Jack Krushian as Mugavan. The
[29:29] Speaker 4: program was produced and directed by Elliott Lewis. Musical score
[29:33] Speaker 4: was composed by Alexander Courage and conducted by Modern Skyles.
[29:37] Speaker 4: In Tonight's story, Jannett Lawrence was Hurt as Ruth and
[29:40] Speaker 4: Anthony Barrett as Less. Featured in the cast were Georgia, Ellis,
[29:44] Speaker 4: Howard mcneer and Leo Cleary. Yes, so's you old man, Yes,
[29:59] Speaker 4: so's your old man, and most everyone else in his
[30:01] Speaker 4: generation that Amos and Andy fan.
[30:03] Speaker 8: And the beauty of their comedy is.
[30:05] Speaker 2: That it's just as funny, just as fabulous, just as
[30:08] Speaker 2: fresh as when Amos and Andy first stole America's heart twenty
[30:12] Speaker 2: three years ago. Tomorrow night, on most of these same
[30:15] Speaker 2: CBS radio stations, listen and laugh with Amos Sinnami by
[30:26] Speaker 2: Lander's speaking, and.
[30:27] Speaker 4: Remember Robert QS Waxworks brings you the top records and
[30:30] Speaker 4: recording artists on the CBS Radio network.
[31:30] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Honestly, this is one of those cases where
[31:34] Speaker 1: I feel like there might be some sort of Mandela
[31:37] Speaker 1: effect going on, because I remember a lot of old
[31:42] Speaker 1: time references to Sylvia, and I could swear that there
[31:46] Speaker 1: was some sort of ad campaign around where Sylvia or
[31:52] Speaker 1: Sylvia specifically, but I couldn't find any during this era.
[31:56] Speaker 1: There is actually a famous gong by Shakespeare called who
[32:03] Speaker 1: is Sylvia that was in the play To Gentlemen of Verona,
[32:08] Speaker 1: and I guess that's probably where the old time radio
[32:12] Speaker 1: Sylvia references come from. But if anyone is aware of
[32:17] Speaker 1: another explanation for the Sylvia references, I would love to
[32:21] Speaker 1: hear it, as it was, it did end up part
[32:25] Speaker 1: of Joan Carson's story. Speaking of Joan, this is one
[32:29] Speaker 1: of those cases where Danny follows the tact that if
[32:34] Speaker 1: you can't prove anything, see if you can bluff. Going
[32:38] Speaker 1: into the final confrontation UH with the Cheneys, Danny had nothing.
[32:45] Speaker 1: Less had been the prime suspect, and Joan corson unless
[32:50] Speaker 1: got arrested together an unrelated narcotics wrap. That was the
[32:55] Speaker 1: whole thing, and somehow Danny walks out of that with
[32:59] Speaker 1: Rue under arrest for the murder of Joan and Less
[33:05] Speaker 1: under arrest for the original payroll robbery plus the murder.
[33:09] Speaker 1: This is one of those cases where it only worked
[33:12] Speaker 1: out because they were willing to talk. Less required to
[33:17] Speaker 1: by the terms of his parole, and Danny questioned them together.
[33:21] Speaker 1: And we also have to note the appearance of our
[33:25] Speaker 1: favorite sergeant who was feeling a bit down. And it's
[33:30] Speaker 1: a good humanizing thing because even though he's cheerful, not
[33:34] Speaker 1: everybody feels cheerful all the time unless they're being performative.
[33:39] Speaker 1: And Gino is a real one and he's got a
[33:43] Speaker 1: real problem with career frustration and his wife kind of
[33:47] Speaker 1: heckling him about. And while Danny can sometimes be a
[33:51] Speaker 1: bit surely and maybe insensitive, it's a bit of a
[33:55] Speaker 1: reversal here, as he's encouraging and reflects the nature of
[34:00] Speaker 1: their relationship. Tortaglia feels free talking about this to Danny,
[34:08] Speaker 1: and that Danny doesn't take it in any way as
[34:13] Speaker 1: an offense against him. Yeah, he can't fix the system,
[34:17] Speaker 1: but he does have faith in Geno as an officer
[34:21] Speaker 1: and that he'll eventually have things work out. But I
[34:26] Speaker 1: don't think it happens while Broadways My Beat is on
[34:29] Speaker 1: the air now listener comments and feedback, and we start
[34:33] Speaker 1: with this comment on Instagram from Brain's Benton who rites,
[34:37] Speaker 1: regarding the Raymond Grant murder case. I really liked the
[34:42] Speaker 1: longer version of the theme song at the end. It
[34:46] Speaker 1: really is a great piece of music to listen to.
[34:49] Speaker 1: Alexander Courage definitely knew his stuff, and I wouldn't say
[34:54] Speaker 1: that all old time radio themes are like this. For example,
[34:59] Speaker 1: the first theme to Yours Truly Johnny Dollar during the
[35:04] Speaker 1: Charles Russell era is not bad. It's a nice little
[35:08] Speaker 1: relaxing tune, but I could take it or leave it.
[35:13] Speaker 1: This one really captures just there's something about New York
[35:19] Speaker 1: City and this show in particular that that tune just
[35:24] Speaker 1: compliments perfectly. Well, now it's time to thank our Patreon
[35:28] Speaker 1: supporter of the day. Thank you to Ron, Patreon supporter

[35:55] Speaker 1: We'll be back next Wednesday with another episode of Broadways
[35:59] Speaker 1: My Beat, But join us back here tomorrow for right
[36:03] Speaker 1: now where.
[36:04] Speaker 15: Russell Preston, that was the last name he used.
[36:06] Speaker 8: I see. He usually starts by putting a want add
[36:09] Speaker 8: in the papers that.
[36:10] Speaker 15: Well, he rents himself an office first, usually pretty expensive
[36:12] Speaker 15: when well furnished. Then he hires a good looking secretary,
[36:15] Speaker 15: has her put a want ad in the daily paper's form.
[36:17] Speaker 8: And he's in business. How do the ads?
[36:18] Speaker 15: He's the usual, yeah, typical thing you see in the
[36:20] Speaker 15: daily paper. Business opportunity for people with vision, good investment,
[36:24] Speaker 15: high profits applying now, you know, and then he gives
[36:26] Speaker 15: his address and phone numbers. There's nothing clever about it,
[36:28] Speaker 15: but people still go for it.
[36:30] Speaker 8: He give Memny replies, you know, well, we.
[36:32] Speaker 15: Figured he got between twenty and thirty on that last
[36:34] Speaker 15: daily pulled. Seems all he has to do is land
[36:36] Speaker 15: one victim out of the bunch with enough money, and
[36:38] Speaker 15: he's got it made. Took his first victim here for
[36:40] Speaker 15: five thousand, second one for thirty two hundred. Both elderly
[36:42] Speaker 15: women took him for their last dollar.
[36:45] Speaker 2: About the way he sets up the deal with these
[36:46] Speaker 2: different businessmen, Joe, I don't think I got it quite straight.
[36:49] Speaker 8: You know what I mean?
[36:50] Speaker 2: Well, I'll say the owner that manufacturing plant, this Russell
[36:52] Speaker 2: Preston lined up, you know. You say Preston went to
[36:55] Speaker 2: the plant, introduced himself as a business advisor, told the
[36:58] Speaker 2: owner of the plant he had some people with money
[37:00] Speaker 2: to invest. He convinced the owner who's legitimate. The other
[37:03] Speaker 2: time and Preston had his two victims shown through the
[37:05] Speaker 2: plant and convinced him they out to invest their money
[37:07] Speaker 2: in the business.
[37:07] Speaker 8: You know that's it?
