[1:57] Speaker 2: about what I go ahead and choose for them, as
[2:00] Speaker 2: opposed to the things that we will play Monday through Saturday.
[2:03] Speaker 2: We want to bring you a pretty standard detective story
[2:07] Speaker 2: every single day for those but as this is a
[2:11] Speaker 2: special we can kind of stretch the bounds of what
[2:14] Speaker 2: we might do on the program. We have done science
[2:18] Speaker 2: fiction detective programs with an episode of.
[2:21] Speaker 3: X minus one, We've done some comedy.
[2:24] Speaker 2: So how about a fantasy detective program? And I don't
[2:28] Speaker 2: mean fantasy in terms of Lords of the ringa something
[2:31] Speaker 2: like that. This is from a pretty unique series. It's
[2:35] Speaker 2: called Cloud Nine. There are five episodes in existence and
[2:39] Speaker 2: it's from nineteen fifty. We don't have a great deal
[2:43] Speaker 2: of information on the series other than what's contained in
[2:47] Speaker 2: it itself, and the central premise appears to be that
[2:50] Speaker 2: a man is constantly whisked up to Cloud nine, taken
[2:55] Speaker 2: on a journey to a fantasy location a location in
[3:00] Speaker 2: real life. One episode that's in existence had him going
[3:04] Speaker 2: out West, another had him going to Paris. Today's episode
[3:08] Speaker 2: has him going to the Land of Radio Detectives. So
[3:11] Speaker 2: with that introduction done, let's go ahead and take a
[3:14] Speaker 2: listen to today's episode. This is from Cloud nine, the original
[3:18] Speaker 2: air day July the twenty first of nineteen fifty.
[3:23] Speaker 4: This is WBBMFM, Chicago, Wrigley's Spearman Chewing Gum, the refreshing,

[4:38] Speaker 3: thing I listened to.
[4:39] Speaker 8: I just keep twisting a dial till I hear pistol shots.
[4:43] Speaker 3: You can't miss that way, can you? Of course?
[4:45] Speaker 5: Sometimes I don't understand the story, but it's very interesting.
[4:50] Speaker 3: I see what you mean.

[10:15] Speaker 7: see in trouble. Oh it's nasty little business on Baker Street.
[10:19] Speaker 7: Thought you might help. Oh, oh, excuse me.
[10:21] Speaker 9: This is a friend of mine. Friend. This is mister Holmes.
[10:25] Speaker 3: How are you, mister Holms? Splendid old man. Good to
[10:27] Speaker 3: meet you.
[10:28] Speaker 7: Er mind if I trot along with you to your
[10:30] Speaker 7: office or not at all?
[10:31] Speaker 3: Your office?
[10:33] Speaker 9: There are a few things about me I haven't explained. Later, Well,
[10:37] Speaker 9: how have you been, su oh splendid? Really picked up
[10:41] Speaker 9: for another twenty six weeks?
[10:42] Speaker 14: You know?
[10:42] Speaker 7: Oh good God, yes, yes, oh oh, just a moment.
[10:45] Speaker 7: I want to stop in here for a moment. Don't mind,
[10:48] Speaker 7: do you? Poor chap can't remember the blasted tune.
[11:06] Speaker 3: Pity.
[11:06] Speaker 7: Yes, come to think of it, old boy Watson left
[11:09] Speaker 7: the papers concerning this. Make a street case on my disk.
[11:12] Speaker 7: I I'll fetch them a fine see you in the office. Yes,
[11:14] Speaker 7: it won't take a moment. Say tell me, is he
[11:18] Speaker 7: really Sherlock Holmes?
[11:19] Speaker 9: Of course?
[11:20] Speaker 14: But then all these names on the doors, there's all
[11:22] Speaker 14: radio detectives. I'm sure you've heard of them.
[11:25] Speaker 9: Here's my office.
[11:27] Speaker 3: All these names. You seem to know them? What cause?
[11:31] Speaker 9: I had to put it simply, friend. It may seem immodest,
[11:34] Speaker 9: but I taught them quite a lot about the business.
[11:37] Speaker 3: That is.
[11:39] Speaker 9: I am the most private of private eyes. Don't do
[11:42] Speaker 9: it professionally any more. However, you are most of them
[11:45] Speaker 9: calling me for consultation that sort of thing.
[11:48] Speaker 10: Oh excuse well, yes, is he just got in? Oh
[11:56] Speaker 10: I think we can fix that. Don't worry about it. Yeah, goodbye,
[12:05] Speaker 10: Oh dear, that was that inner sanctum Chap, the one who.
[12:09] Speaker 9: Laughs normally, but he's very unhappy at the moment some
[12:13] Speaker 9: prankster oiled his squeaking door.
[12:16] Speaker 14: Say this radio detective thing is quite a business, isn't it.
[12:19] Speaker 14: It has its problem. Sorry to bother your enment.
[12:24] Speaker 7: Could you be good enough to come down to my
[12:26] Speaker 7: office for.
[12:26] Speaker 9: A moment, But of course, your lock. I'll come with you.
[12:28] Speaker 3: It's frightful, a good deal, a friend.
[12:30] Speaker 10: Amuse yourself while I'm gone. I think there's an old
[12:33] Speaker 10: Sam Spade script on my desk.
[12:35] Speaker 9: I'd like to look it over.
[12:36] Speaker 14: Oh sure, sure, go ahead, let's see the script. I
[12:44] Speaker 14: wonder if I could do this stuff. The opening scene
[12:50] Speaker 14: a little miss Muffett Caper. I just finished hanging up
[12:55] Speaker 14: the phone after saying Sam Spade Detective Agency. Effie had
[12:58] Speaker 14: gone out, and I settled back in my chair with
[13:01] Speaker 14: a racing form, all set for a quiet afternoon. When
[13:06] Speaker 14: she came in, she being a well turned brunette, wearing
[13:10] Speaker 14: a sweater which did considerably more for than just make
[13:13] Speaker 14: a rich I was going to say hello as she
[13:16] Speaker 14: stuck out her hand, but on second glance I saw
[13:19] Speaker 14: that those long, tapering, well manicured fingers held a pearl
[13:23] Speaker 14: handle thirty eight shape thirty eight. I was cordial and said, cleverly,
[13:28] Speaker 14: sit on, no thanks.
[13:29] Speaker 15: Mister Spade.
[13:30] Speaker 3: Huh.
[13:31] Speaker 15: I have heard a lot about you, mister Spade, and
[13:33] Speaker 15: I have no time to waste.
[13:35] Speaker 3: Honey, put that thing down.
[13:36] Speaker 14: I'm not Sam Spade.
[13:37] Speaker 15: I do not believe you. I know you are.
[13:39] Speaker 3: And now look, I just happened to be sitting here.
[13:42] Speaker 15: Anything happens to me. I want you to find me.
[13:46] Speaker 15: I need protection.
[13:47] Speaker 14: Hey, look, baby, you've got me wrong. Two fifty dollars bills.
[13:53] Speaker 15: I must go now.
[13:54] Speaker 14: Hey, wait a minute, what's your name? What minute? How
[14:04] Speaker 14: about that? Let's see that script. Her name, she said,
[14:09] Speaker 14: was Caesar Muffett. And when she went out, she slammed
[14:16] Speaker 14: the door. I'm sorry to bother you. But the funniest
[14:33] Speaker 14: thing I don't know, Well, a gal came in. She's
[14:36] Speaker 14: in trouble.
[14:37] Speaker 7: One thing, old fellow. In this business, one is never ruffled.
[14:40] Speaker 7: I have remained calm through seventy eight murders, sixty kidnappings,
[14:44] Speaker 7: and the score of other crimes.
[14:45] Speaker 3: Pause, my definitely. Did did you ever hear of a gal?
[14:48] Speaker 3: But the name of a Ziza Muffett?
[14:50] Speaker 7: Strange name, By jove, there's a musical comedy singer and
[14:54] Speaker 7: dancer called Aziza. Yes, sir, Aziza Muffett could be the same.
[15:00] Speaker 7: You know, she's an Algeriana, some sort of thing. What
[15:03] Speaker 7: did she look like?
[15:04] Speaker 3: Why don't know? She's a brunette shapely. Oh no, no, no, no,
[15:10] Speaker 3: my boy.
[15:11] Speaker 7: In a detective show, the girls are always ravishingly beautiful,
[15:15] Speaker 7: never never played. Now, if this is the Aziza of
[15:19] Speaker 7: which I'm thinking, but let me describe her by all
[15:23] Speaker 7: means thank you, at first her crowning attribute, her sparkling,
[15:29] Speaker 7: shimmering hair, then the graceful slope of her ravishing shoulders,
[15:39] Speaker 7: and then her uh oh yes, I see her to
[15:48] Speaker 7: me yes, And finally, you might say, the delicate suggestion
[15:52] Speaker 7: of the manner in which she walks, and then when.
[16:03] Speaker 14: She stops, When she stops, I can't be the same one.
[16:15] Speaker 7: I've come to think of it. Gentlemen, As Caesar is
[16:18] Speaker 7: playing now at the Music Hall Theater, why don't you
[16:20] Speaker 7: two run along?
[16:21] Speaker 3: Well, yeah, let's go. How does that happen?
[16:37] Speaker 14: There's always a taxi whenever a detective wants it.
[16:40] Speaker 10: No, it's quite simple, otherwise would slow up the plot.
[16:43] Speaker 10: Right over that driver stage door. That's it.
[16:50] Speaker 3: Here you are?
[16:55] Speaker 9: You notice that every detective always has the right change
[16:58] Speaker 9: and paying a cab. You just tend to drive bill
[17:00] Speaker 9: and get out. Yeah, I wondered about that, Just thought
[17:03] Speaker 9: you'd like to know. Here's the stage row.
[17:07] Speaker 8: Hello, could I help you gentlemen.
[17:09] Speaker 9: Peter, you working as a stage door.
[17:13] Speaker 8: Oh, hello, my dear friend. Yes, yes I am. Things
[17:18] Speaker 8: are slow at the studio now you.
[17:19] Speaker 9: Know we will meet a friend of mine. This is

[17:23] Speaker 8: How are you, Oh yes, yes, it's nice to meet you, sir.
[17:28] Speaker 9: Is there a singer by the name of Ziza here?
[17:31] Speaker 8: Oh? Oh, yes, Aziza. Such a strange girl. She's coming
[17:37] Speaker 8: on now. Why don't you stand here in your wings
[17:41] Speaker 8: and watch her?
[17:43] Speaker 3: That's the girl.
[17:48] Speaker 12: Don't remas, don't shine, get my love, and.
[17:52] Speaker 3: In the even time when I am with my baby,
[18:00] Speaker 3: it's not fun.
[18:01] Speaker 12: When the sun rose, I get going.
[18:04] Speaker 16: When the sun goes down, and I made mine.
[18:12] Speaker 15: That's when we kiss and kiss and kiss, and then
[18:16] Speaker 15: we kiss them old.
[18:18] Speaker 16: Don't ask how many times we kiss at a time
[18:22] Speaker 16: like this?
[18:23] Speaker 15: Who needs goes so?
[18:24] Speaker 12: I don't care the sun don't shine?
[18:30] Speaker 11: What happened to the wind?

[19:49] Speaker 8: in here.
[19:50] Speaker 3: I wonder what could have happened to her.
[19:53] Speaker 8: Perhaps perhaps she's murdered and hanging in a closet or
[19:57] Speaker 8: something like that. Oh no, she isn't. That's a pity.
[20:04] Speaker 8: It would solve everything.
[20:05] Speaker 3: Will and I get mixed up on this. I was
[20:08] Speaker 3: just sitting there reading a Sam Spade script.
[20:11] Speaker 17: Come in, Come in, most honorable professor. Oh, come in,

[20:55] Speaker 3: How is that?
[20:56] Speaker 5: Oh?
[20:56] Speaker 7: Yes, yes, I remember. I went to a phone box,

[32:52] Speaker 12: every day. Programs come to you from Chicago. This is CBS,
[33:04] Speaker 12: the Columbia Broadcasting System.
[33:09] Speaker 16: This is Andrew J.
[33:10] Speaker 4: Graham, author of the web surface series Oh and a
[33:13] Speaker 4: Man of His Wife.
[33:14] Speaker 3: You're listening to the great Detectives of Old time radio.
[33:24] Speaker 3: Welcome back. Well that was fun.
[33:26] Speaker 2: A lot of really great in jokes about detective and
[33:32] Speaker 2: mystery programs of the era, as well as some of
[33:35] Speaker 2: the famous detectives. Of course, you have references to Sherlock Home,
[33:39] Speaker 2: Sam Spade.
[33:40] Speaker 3: Jo On E.
[33:40] Speaker 2: Doller, the Whistler, and Inner Sanctum, as well as Charlie
[33:44] Speaker 2: Chen and a fair Peter Lorian personation. The people really
[33:50] Speaker 2: use that all the time in the Golden Age of radio.
[33:53] Speaker 2: And then you have the music. The incidental music on
[33:56] Speaker 2: this was really nice, and then the scene was absolutely
[34:00] Speaker 2: top notch this episode. One other reason I played it
[34:04] Speaker 2: is that It originated from the city of Chicago, and
[34:07] Speaker 2: we don't get a lot of Chicago based programs. Very
[34:10] Speaker 2: few have survived. Of course, you have not Beat, which
[34:14] Speaker 2: is set in Chicago, butts recorded out in Allywood. But
[34:17] Speaker 2: this is a nice unique mix of talent and a
[34:20] Speaker 2: really unique program. Certainly nothing else like it that we've
[34:25] Speaker 2: played or probably will play in the future. But I
[34:28] Speaker 2: hope you enjoyed the change of pace. Monday, we'll be
[34:31] Speaker 2: back with not Beat Tuesday, listen for Follow That Man,
[34:35] Speaker 2: and then a week from Tuesday, it'll be time for
[34:38] Speaker 2: the Judge. In the meantimes. In your comments to Books
