[1:11] Speaker 2: That's a cola.
[1:16] Speaker 3: P-E-T-S-I.
[1:17] Speaker 4: That's your smartest cola buy.
[1:19] Speaker 3: P-E-T-S-I.
[1:24] Speaker 4: That's the call I'll present, Counterspy.
[1:26] Speaker 5: Washington calling David Harding, Counterspy. Washington calling David Harding, Counterspy.
[1:43] Speaker 3: Harding, Counterspy, calling Washington.
[1:46] Speaker 6: United States Counterspies.
[1:54] Speaker 7: Especially appointed to investigate and combat the enemies of our country,
[1:59] Speaker 7: both at home and abroad.
[2:05] Speaker 4: Tonight, the case of the visiting vultures. Another counter-spy report
[2:10] Speaker 4: to the American people. Brought to you each Tuesday and
[2:13] Speaker 4: Thursday by Pepsi-Cola. Pepsi-Cola, it's a spot. Two full glasses,
[2:18] Speaker 4: that's a lot. That's right, you heard what they said.
[2:20] Speaker 4: Two full glasses of sparkling Pepsi from one big 12-ounce bottle.
[2:25] Speaker 4: You're getting an extra glass full. And what a delicious
[2:28] Speaker 4: glass full. The most refreshing, delightful cola that ever tickled
[2:32] Speaker 4: your taste. You can't top Pepsi's tangy flavor. And that big,
[2:36] Speaker 4: big bottle saves you money, goes twice as far. Pepsi's
[2:40] Speaker 4: America's big, big favorite. And America's biggest total value. So
[2:45] Speaker 4: why take less when Pepsi's best? Whenever you reach for refreshments, remember... Why.
[2:52] Speaker 5: Take less when Pepsi's best?
[2:55] Speaker 4: And now, to Counterspy. In a conference room in counter-spy
[3:07] Speaker 4: headquarters in Washington, David Harding addresses a group of men
[3:11] Speaker 4: around a long, shiny table.
[3:14] Speaker 2: Gentlemen, I'm honored by the presence here of the governors
[3:17] Speaker 2: of the several southern states covered by our counter-spy districts 9, 10,
[3:21] Speaker 2: and 11.
[3:23] Speaker 3: We realize that your.
[3:24] Speaker 2: State administrations are faced with a large criminal operation, selling
[3:28] Speaker 2: illegally made alcohol and evading federal taxes.
[3:32] Speaker 4: Peter, those figures, please.
[3:34] Speaker 3: Yes, Mr.
[3:34] Speaker 6: Harding.
[3:36] Speaker 2: District 9, estimated tax loss, $ 221, 000. District 10, $ 400, 000. District 11,
[3:48] Speaker 2: over half a million dollars. Now, gentlemen, we don't yet
[3:53] Speaker 2: know what gang makes that alcohol or where it's made,
[3:56] Speaker 2: but all over your state, counter-spy squads are moving into action.
[4:07] Speaker 8: All right, here comes the truck, boys.
[4:09] Speaker 4: Don't let it get by.
[4:10] Speaker 3: It's loaded with.
[4:11] Speaker 8: One-gallon corn syrup cans.
[4:12] Speaker 3: That's what we're looking for. Okay, buddy, pull up.
[4:17] Speaker 9: United States counter fire.
[4:25] Speaker 3: This is the place. It's a dance hall and tavern.
[4:32] Speaker 3: They won't open up for us. All right, men. Smash
[4:35] Speaker 3: down that door.
[4:41] Speaker 9: This truck's coming fast, but it's got to be stopped.
[4:50] Speaker 4: If the truck doesn't stop, blast the tires. Get those tires!
[4:53] Speaker 2: So far, gentlemen.
[5:09] Speaker 2: No useful leads have been obtained from truck drivers, tavern keepers,
[5:13] Speaker 2: and others taken in each counter fire raid. One lead
[5:16] Speaker 2: of possible value has been found, however. My assistant, Harry Peters,
[5:20] Speaker 2: is leaving tonight to investigate it in Chicago.
[5:23] Speaker 10: Hey, buddy, I'm looking for the main office of the
[5:31] Speaker 10: famous Flanagan Sisters Corn Sear Company.
[5:34] Speaker 3: Is it in here? No, no, this is only the garage.
[5:36] Speaker 3: The office is in that snazzy little building right across
[5:39] Speaker 3: the street. Anybody here?
[6:04] Speaker 4: Oh, uh, excuse me.
[6:06] Speaker 9: Yeah, Buster, what's up to you?
[6:08] Speaker 2: I was looking for a secretary or a receptionist or something.
[6:11] Speaker 3: That little blonde thing there, you see.
[6:14] Speaker 9: What's the problem?
[6:14] Speaker 2: I want to find out something about the famous Flanagan sisters.
[6:19] Speaker 3: Why, Buster?
[6:21] Speaker 2: I'm Harry Peters, United States Counter-Strike. Oh, Peters, I got
[6:25] Speaker 2: news for you. I'm the famous Flanagan sisters. You're the
[6:30] Speaker 2: famous Flanagan sisters?
[6:32] Speaker 4: All of them? Ha, ha, ha.
[6:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's only a trade name, and I bought the
[6:35] Speaker 2: business a couple of years ago.
[6:37] Speaker 3: My name's Hype Gordon. Sit down. Thank you, Mr. Newton. I, uh.
[6:43] Speaker 3: You believe in large offices? Why not?
[6:45] Speaker 2: I spent half my life here. Is this one of
[6:49] Speaker 2: your cans of syrup?
[6:51] Speaker 3: A sample, yeah.
[6:53] Speaker 2: That label, that is a portrait of the original Flanagan
[6:57] Speaker 2: sisters bending over a hot stove, making their corn.
[7:00] Speaker 3: Syrup according to a receipt... Hand it down from mother
[7:05] Speaker 3: to daughter.
[7:05] Speaker 2: Between you and me, the daughter could hand it back.
[7:10] Speaker 3: Tell me, do you know what happens to your used cans? Why?
[7:13] Speaker 2: Well, do you take them back, for instance?
[7:15] Speaker 3: Like milk bottles, you mean?
[7:17] Speaker 4: No.
[7:18] Speaker 3: Why?
[7:18] Speaker 2: A lot of them seem to be used for shipping
[7:21] Speaker 2: illegal alcohol around the country.
[7:24] Speaker 3: Labels drift off, of course. My cans where?
[7:27] Speaker 2: Into the so-called monopoly states, where liquor is sold only
[7:30] Speaker 2: by state-owned liquor stores. Bootleg liquor undersells those stores very
[7:34] Speaker 2: profitably because somebody forgets.
[7:36] Speaker 3: To pay the federal alcohol taxes.
[7:39] Speaker 2: We figure around $ 3 million on this particular operation alone.
[7:44] Speaker 3: Oh, you trace those cans to me. Mm-hmm.
[7:47] Speaker 2: Through the manufacturer. Want to look around the place, Peters?
[7:51] Speaker 3: I'll show you where we make the syrup and can it. 50,
[7:55] Speaker 3: 60 employees, that guy.
[7:57] Speaker 2: I'll even show you the garage where we ship it
[7:59] Speaker 2: out to stores and wholesalers.
[8:01] Speaker 3: Maybe I'll even give you a couple of cans to
[8:03] Speaker 3: take home to the little woman. Come on. This way. Hello, Milky.
[8:16] Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[8:18] Speaker 4: That you, Mr.
[8:19] Speaker 6: Gordon?
[8:19] Speaker 3: Listen, counter-spies are sniffing around my plant here. Counter-spies? Holy fish.
[8:25] Speaker 2: So don't send any more clucks here from the still
[8:27] Speaker 2: till you get word from me.
[8:28] Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[8:30] Speaker 11: Mr.
[8:30] Speaker 3: Gordon.
[8:31] Speaker 5: You had three trucks loaded and ready to.
[8:33] Speaker 2: Roll out of your garage, didn't you?
[8:34] Speaker 3: I got them out fast. So sit tight, Melty, and
[8:37] Speaker 3: we'll be okay.
[8:38] Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[8:52] Speaker 4: Peters to Harding in Washington.
[8:54] Speaker 2: No evidence whatever at Hype Gordon's syrup plant to connect
[8:57] Speaker 2: it or him with illegal alcohol manufacturers. However, have sent
[9:01] Speaker 2: agents to trail three loaded trucks that left his garage
[9:04] Speaker 2: while I was there. Gordon himself also under surveillance. Has
[9:09] Speaker 2: three cars, including limousine with French chauffeur. Lives in most
[9:12] Speaker 2: expensive apartment hotel in Chicago, swarming with uniformed flunkies. Gordon's
[9:17] Speaker 2: rental at least $ 15, 000 a year for lavishly furnished penthouse apartments.
[9:34] Speaker 3: Hey, sleeping beauty. Wake up, sweetheart. Love a boy.
[9:41] Speaker 4: Oh, hi.
[9:42] Speaker 7: What are you doing?
[9:45] Speaker 3: Working, what else? It's only 12.30, Vinnie. Say, you got
[9:50] Speaker 3: any bologna?
[9:51] Speaker 12: Yes, I'll sleep on a daggum waiting sheet.
[9:54] Speaker 3: Must be love.
[9:56] Speaker 9: What's the matter?
[9:58] Speaker 3: The famous Flanagan sister. and Uncle Sam. Holy smoke.
[10:03] Speaker 2: Sam?
[10:04] Speaker 3: I'm not sure yet. There's no time for you to
[10:07] Speaker 3: get in trouble, lover boy. I still need that second one. Hey,
[10:12] Speaker 3: I asked you if we got any bologna company.
[10:14] Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
[10:15] Speaker 3: Hi, Sam.
[10:17] Speaker 11: Here we are tonight, living in the most expensive apartment
[10:20] Speaker 11: we've ever had.
[10:22] Speaker 10: And I have to keep burrowing and pumping nickel in
[10:24] Speaker 10: the icebox.
[10:26] Speaker 3: Refrigerator. What's the matter with bologna? It is so crude.
[10:33] Speaker 9: There was only straws, bread and wine or something.
[10:37] Speaker 3: But it's bologna and pumping nickel. Thanks. Now, somebody? Please.
[10:48] Speaker 4: Hi.
[10:49] Speaker 3: How tough is it without you, sir?
[10:51] Speaker 2: No. I figure as long as they don't find out
[10:54] Speaker 2: where my still is, they can't tie me up to it.
[10:58] Speaker 3: I'm just going to sit around and smile. And after
[11:00] Speaker 3: a while, the counter-spies will figure I'm an innocent victim.
[11:02] Speaker 1: Go away.
[11:04] Speaker 4: Oh, it's no good.
[11:07] Speaker 12: Somebody had to do it without being announced.
[11:09] Speaker 2: Maybe it's counter-spies.
[11:11] Speaker 3: You go on down the hall to the bedroom. Stay there.
[11:13] Speaker 6: Go on.
[11:14] Speaker 1: Go on.
[11:14] Speaker 3: Let me.
[11:24] Speaker 3: Uh, no.
[11:26] Speaker 4: Well, well, hiya, Hype.
[11:28] Speaker 3: Well, well, say, you look just exactly the way I
[11:31] Speaker 3: thought you would.
[11:31] Speaker 6: Yes, sir.
[11:34] Speaker 3: Not one hair out of place.
[11:36] Speaker 12: Press the plate, Hype, old boy.
[11:38] Speaker 6: It's good to see you.
[11:39] Speaker 3: Oh, Sam. Hell, hiya. Let go of my hand, will you?
[11:43] Speaker 3: How'd you get past the doorman?
[11:44] Speaker 4: Oh, my ass. Hey, look.
[11:47] Speaker 12: Do you mind if I grab my suitcase right here?
[11:50] Speaker 3: Ah, I'm Sam. Sam?
[11:52] Speaker 6: Sam Vanderbilt.
[11:54] Speaker 3: Your wife's brother, Sam. Sam?
[11:57] Speaker 12: Yeah.
[11:59] Speaker 4: Oh, Sam.
[12:01] Speaker 3: Well, how are you? Oh, great.
[12:04] Speaker 6: I'm great.
[12:05] Speaker 3: Just great.
[12:06] Speaker 6: You see, I hopped the rattle out of St.
[12:07] Speaker 3: Lou early today.
[12:08] Speaker 12: Made up my mind to hit for the Windy City.
[12:10] Speaker 12: You know, for a decent job. I need scope.
[12:13] Speaker 3: I've been there.
[12:13] Speaker 6: There ain't no scope in St.
[12:15] Speaker 8: Lou.
[12:15] Speaker 3: That's it. Just between you and me.
[12:19] Speaker 12: I come on ahead of Gladys so I can sneak
[12:21] Speaker 12: in a couple of hot nightclubs, you know.
[12:28] Speaker 3: Gladys, come and so.
[12:30] Speaker 6: Oh, sure, sure.
[12:31] Speaker 12: You see, we thought it was about time we met
[12:33] Speaker 12: the man my little sister Finney married last year. Hey, hey,
[12:38] Speaker 12: you've got a mighty classy joint around here.
[12:41] Speaker 3: Kind of small, though, ain't it? As always, Vinnie and me. Uh,
[12:45] Speaker 3: piece of back, I'd better sell you.
[12:46] Speaker 4: Oh, no, hold it, hold it.
[12:48] Speaker 6: Don't bother. Don't bother.
[12:50] Speaker 3: I could bet down right here. Uh-oh.
[12:53] Speaker 12: Hey, ain't this one of them sofas that open up into.
[12:55] Speaker 4: A bed, ain't it, huh?
[12:57] Speaker 12: Is it big enough for two?
[12:58] Speaker 1: What?
[12:59] Speaker 12: Well, you know, Gladys and I wouldn't want any inconvenience
[13:01] Speaker 12: in that. We'll be mighty comfortable right here in the
[13:03] Speaker 12: living room.
[13:05] Speaker 3: You mean you couldn't get rooms in a hotel? I
[13:08] Speaker 3: can work it for you. Hotel?
[13:10] Speaker 2: Hotel?
[13:11] Speaker 12: When I got relatives, I was fond of it like
[13:13] Speaker 12: you and Vinnie. I wouldn't dream or hurt my feelings
[13:15] Speaker 12: by going to no hotel. Oh, oh, and loamy and pumpernickel, huh?
[13:25] Speaker 4: You're right.
[13:25] Speaker 2: Good.
[13:26] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[13:27] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[13:28] Speaker 3: Honey, I'm sorry there's no frogs there.
[13:30] Speaker 4: Oh, don't feel.
[13:31] Speaker 12: Bad about that, Hype.
[13:32] Speaker 6: I love bologna and pumpernickel.
[13:43] Speaker 4: To counter-spy field office, Chicago.
[13:46] Speaker 8: Surveillance report concerning the trucks followed from famous Flanagan sisters
[13:50] Speaker 8: corn syrup company garage. They proceeded south by various roads...
[13:55] Speaker 8: to make deliveries to 18 illegal liquor users. They are
[13:59] Speaker 8: being kept under observation. Relay this report to Mr. Harding
[14:03] Speaker 8: in Cottage by Plane 1, en route Chicago.
[14:13] Speaker 2: Dave, I'm sure glad you're here in Chicago. This new
[14:15] Speaker 2: development nails it right to Hyde Gordon. He himself ships
[14:18] Speaker 2: out alcohol under cover of shipping out corn syrup. But
[14:20] Speaker 2: where is the alcohol made? That's the only one thing
[14:24] Speaker 2: to do, Peter. Pull a new series of raids on
[14:26] Speaker 2: his customers in the southern districts that might scare him
[14:29] Speaker 2: into revealing where his field's located. This tavern is being
[14:39] Speaker 2: padlocked for violation of the law.
[14:45] Speaker 3: Watch those rear windows. They're trying to get away. All right,
[14:52] Speaker 3: step on it, Jack.
[14:53] Speaker 4: We'll be late for the next raid.
[14:54] Speaker 3: All right. They're shooting at us. Blast the lock off
[15:03] Speaker 3: that door. Hello, Melty.
[15:13] Speaker 9: Hey, Hype.
[15:14] Speaker 12: Hype, for the love of Mike, you better come out
[15:15] Speaker 12: here to the stills.
[15:16] Speaker 3: Take it apart or something.
[15:19] Speaker 4: Hey, you know about all these new cottage by raids?
[15:20] Speaker 3: Listen, Melty. They can raid every joint in the country.
[15:23] Speaker 3: Won't mean nothing to us.
[15:24] Speaker 2: So long as they don't locate the stills. And they
[15:27] Speaker 2: won't so long as I don't go there so the
[15:28] Speaker 2: counter spies can tail me.
[15:30] Speaker 3: You just keep your head down and sit tight. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[15:33] Speaker 3: Sit tight.
[15:34] Speaker 6: We ought to do something.
[15:35] Speaker 3: No.
[15:36] Speaker 2: If this was another mob muscling in or something like
[15:39] Speaker 2: those west side guys two years.
[15:40] Speaker 3: Ago, I'd go after them with guns. This has to
[15:43] Speaker 3: be played close to the vet.
[15:45] Speaker 11: Okay, Mr.
[15:46] Speaker 2: Gordon.
[15:47] Speaker 4: Suppose I have to call you later tonight.
[15:48] Speaker 3: You're home? Home. I can't go home till way later.
[15:53] Speaker 3: My brother-in-law's visiting us. What a schmoe. You're a true moe!
[15:57] Speaker 3: I can't, though. My wife sticks up for us. I'm
[16:00] Speaker 3: nuts about my wife. And there's my sister-in-law, Gladys.
[16:04] Speaker 2: Tall and skinny, she talks and talks and talks and talks.
[16:14] Speaker 9: And I never dreamed of mentioning you, Sam.
[16:16] Speaker 3: Only, after all, you're my sister-in-law.
[16:18] Speaker 11: And you know how Sam would never say a word
[16:20] Speaker 11: unless he was sure.
[16:21] Speaker 6: Good thing.
[16:23] Speaker 3: He said just now that he wasn't sure.
[16:25] Speaker 11: After all, a wife ought to know how a husband
[16:27] Speaker 11: earns his money. And after all, you only knew Hype three.
[16:30] Speaker 4: Weeks before you married.
[16:31] Speaker 12: I know that.
[16:32] Speaker 9: And Sam was always good to me.
[16:33] Speaker 11: Especially after Pop died back home. But that doesn't give
[16:38] Speaker 11: him or you the right to criticize Hype.
[16:41] Speaker 3: I'm nuts about him.
[16:41] Speaker 11: But also, said it wasn't, he didn't think the famous
[16:44] Speaker 11: Flanagan sisters corn syrup company was very successful. And still,
[16:47] Speaker 11: you and Hype have three cars, and you've got four
[16:50] Speaker 11: closets full of clothes, and that diamond ring. And then yesterday,
[16:54] Speaker 11: Sam followed Hype around the city, and Hype didn't go
[16:57] Speaker 11: anywhere near any customers.
[16:59] Speaker 3: Sam's been changing.
[17:01] Speaker 4: I mean, snooping around after Hype.
[17:03] Speaker 3: Oh, that's contemptible. Hype?
[17:07] Speaker 8: Loverboy?
[17:09] Speaker 10: You're awfully late.
[17:10] Speaker 3: A lot of work, Renee. Hello, Gladys. Hello. Vinnie, I'm
[17:16] Speaker 3: going to have some bologna and pumpernickel. Where's Sam?
[17:19] Speaker 4: In the kitchen, having some bologna and pumpernickel.
[17:25] Speaker 3: Time to hit the hay, Vinnie. Yeah.
[17:28] Speaker 4: Good night, Gladys.
[17:30] Speaker 3: Good night, Vinnie. Good night, Gladys. Vinnie, the guy drives
[17:39] Speaker 3: me nuts.
[17:39] Speaker 10: Who?
[17:40] Speaker 3: Who?
[17:40] Speaker 7: Sam.
[17:42] Speaker 3: And Gladys. Now, listen, sweetheart. How about taking them out? Well,
[17:45] Speaker 3: they won't be here much longer. What do you mean?
[17:47] Speaker 12: Two years?
[17:47] Speaker 10: Now, lover boy.
[17:49] Speaker 3: They drive me nuts. They're always in the way. They
[17:53] Speaker 3: sleep on the sofa.
[17:54] Speaker 4: Diver.
[17:55] Speaker 3: Borrows my shirt. Needs my bologna and comprimitum.
[17:59] Speaker 4: I'll tell you.
[18:00] Speaker 3: Getting so the only pleasure I have at home. Just
[18:03] Speaker 3: taking off my shoes.
[18:05] Speaker 4: I can't throw Sam and Gladys out, lover boy.
[18:07] Speaker 7: They're all the family I got left.
[18:09] Speaker 3: Vinnie. Vinnie, my customer down south. You got raided. I
[18:16] Speaker 3: need a clear head, Vinnie.
[18:17] Speaker 2: And that schmo brother of yours gets me so mad,
[18:19] Speaker 2: I can't think straight.
[18:22] Speaker 3: First thing you know, I'll do something dumb. And, honey,
[18:24] Speaker 3: it'll be his fault. I'll murder the guy. Not so loud.
[18:31] Speaker 3: On my pajamas. Sam, got my pajamas?
[18:34] Speaker 4: On the pillow.
[18:36] Speaker 11: I guess this is no time for you to be upset,
[18:41] Speaker 11: and I.
[18:42] Speaker 10: I'd better tell you instead of you finding it out.
[18:45] Speaker 3: Find out what? Well, uh, Sam follows you around. What?
[18:52] Speaker 10: No.
[18:53] Speaker 3: He follows me around?
[18:56] Speaker 2: Sam, that iron-headed clam digger? I'll drain him now, so
[19:01] Speaker 2: help me. Where's the Sam Hill of my slippers?
[19:04] Speaker 3: I suppose he's got them too.
[19:05] Speaker 2: I love her, boy.
[19:06] Speaker 12: Don't make a scene.
[19:08] Speaker 3: I'll get rid of them both by Saturday, I promise.
[19:12] Speaker 4: Please, lover boy.
[19:13] Speaker 3: Please.
[19:27] Speaker 4: In just a moment, we'll return to Counterspy, brought to
[19:30] Speaker 4: you by Pepsi-Cola.
[19:32] Speaker 3: Pepsi-Cola hits the spot.
[19:33] Speaker 2: Two full glasses, that's a lot.
[19:36] Speaker 12: Lots more value, lots more zest.
[19:38] Speaker 4: Why take less when Pepsi's best? More and more, among
[19:40] Speaker 4: fellows and girls, among mothers and dads, you hear that
[19:43] Speaker 4: sane and sensible question. Why take less when Pepsi is best?
[19:47] Speaker 4: No budget, no allowance ever had a better friend than tangy,
[19:51] Speaker 4: sparkling Pepsi-Cola. Because one big 12-ounce Pepsi bottle gives you
[19:55] Speaker 4: two delicious drinks. That's twice as much tangy taste, twice
[19:59] Speaker 4: as much delicious Pepsi to go just twice as far.
[20:03] Speaker 4: That's why more and more families say, why take less
[20:06] Speaker 4: when Pepsi is best? Yes, families like yours and mine.
[20:10] Speaker 4: Families all over America. They're all saying, why take less
[20:14] Speaker 4: when Pepsi's best?
[20:16] Speaker 6: Pepsi Cola hits the spot.
[20:18] Speaker 4: Tastes terrific when you're hot. More and better than the rest.
[20:22] Speaker 4: Why take less when Pepsi's best? Today, tomorrow, always. Get
[20:26] Speaker 4: America's biggest cola value. Take home a carton of six big,
[20:30] Speaker 4: big Pepsi bottles. Insist on Pepsi at the store. And
[20:34] Speaker 4: say Pepsi at the fountain. Say Pepsi at the stand.
[20:38] Speaker 4: Say Pepsi. Whenever you reach for a refreshment, remember... Why
[20:43] Speaker 4: take less when Pepsi's best? And now, back to Counterspy.
[20:57] Speaker 3: Peter, I've been studying the surveillance reports on Hype Gordon. Yeah,
[21:00] Speaker 3: me too, Dad. He hasn't made a single betraying move.
[21:04] Speaker 3: It's great.
[21:04] Speaker 2: We smash his customers, stop the tax losses. We know
[21:07] Speaker 2: he ships out the alcohol.
[21:08] Speaker 3: But what we don't know is where's that still? On
[21:11] Speaker 3: the moon, maybe.
[21:13] Speaker 2: Well, I've got one notion that might be useful. Did
[21:15] Speaker 2: you notice in these reports about Hype Gordon's brother and
[21:18] Speaker 2: sister-in-law visiting? And driving him crazy, yes. Peter's relatives and
[21:23] Speaker 2: in-laws often make trouble for decent people.
[21:25] Speaker 4: Why not trouble for crooks, too?
[21:27] Speaker 3: I think this Mr.
[21:28] Speaker 2: Sam Vandervoort might be a lot of help to us.
[21:31] Speaker 2: With a push from you.
[21:40] Speaker 11: Sam, maybe I shouldn't have said anything about you following
[21:43] Speaker 11: Hype around, but it just sort.
[21:45] Speaker 7: Of popped out.
[21:46] Speaker 3: Oh, well, Gladys, it don't make no difference. I couldn't
[21:48] Speaker 3: find anything out anyway.
[21:50] Speaker 4: I guess I'll have to go back to St.
[21:51] Speaker 3: Louis Saturday, maybe. Where are they tonight, Hype and Vinnie?
[21:54] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[21:55] Speaker 11: We got the apartment all to ourselves, and I must
[21:56] Speaker 11: say it's a relief to have a little privacy. Oh,
[22:00] Speaker 11: somebody's at the door. You go, Sam, and if it's
[22:02] Speaker 11: a telegram or anything for Hype, you better open it
[22:04] Speaker 11: in case you get caught.
[22:07] Speaker 3: All right. Yes? There's hyphens? Hot swords? No. No, he's not.
[22:14] Speaker 3: Did I give him a message? You're a friend of his? No,
[22:17] Speaker 3: I'm his brother-in-law. Oh. Well, give him this message, would you?
[22:20] Speaker 4: Rush.
[22:21] Speaker 3: Tell him to get out to the still right away.
[22:23] Speaker 6: Get out to the still right away?
[22:26] Speaker 3: What name will I tell him?
[22:27] Speaker 2: You'll know where the message is from.
[22:28] Speaker 3: Come on. Who was it, Sam?
[22:33] Speaker 2: Telegram?
[22:34] Speaker 11: Special delivery? Sam, I asked you a question. Why don't
[22:37] Speaker 11: you answer me? Sam, something's happened. I can always tell
[22:40] Speaker 11: by your face whenever you've got an idea.
[22:41] Speaker 4: Now, why don't you tell me?
[22:42] Speaker 2: Huh?
[22:43] Speaker 3: What? I said, I was thinking... Oh, shut up, will you?
[22:46] Speaker 3: I'm trying to think. Lenny? Lenny, it's me.
[23:02] Speaker 2: Sam?
[23:04] Speaker 5: What is.
[23:07] Speaker 2: It? Oh, well, nobody.
[23:18] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[23:18] Speaker 6: Hi, Mr.
[23:19] Speaker 3: Finney.
[23:20] Speaker 9: Where have you been?
[23:20] Speaker 3: The athletic club, like I told you. Where are you?
[23:24] Speaker 11: I told Sam I'm here.
[23:26] Speaker 4: The minute we got in control, Milky got all excited
[23:28] Speaker 4: and ran away.
[23:29] Speaker 9: Oh, all the other men too.
[23:30] Speaker 3: Milky? The other men? Finney, are you at the stills? Well, Sam.
[23:37] Speaker 11: I couldn't help it.
[23:44] Speaker 2: I don't know what's going on, but I'm going to
[23:45] Speaker 2: kill somebody for this.
[23:48] Speaker 3: Don't move. Don't do anything. I'll come right out.
[23:57] Speaker 9: Hi.
[23:58] Speaker 10: You don't have to yell at me.
[23:59] Speaker 4: I was only trying to help.
[24:00] Speaker 7: Help.
[24:01] Speaker 1: Help.
[24:03] Speaker 2: You and Sam together, you've made me do the one
[24:06] Speaker 2: thing I swore I'd never do.
[24:07] Speaker 3: Come out to this still so I could be pale. Why,
[24:09] Speaker 3: you got me and Vinnie all wrong about it. Sam,
[24:11] Speaker 3: you shut up.
[24:12] Speaker 2: And what'd you bring that idiot along for, too?
[24:15] Speaker 3: Me? Ladders? Look, I'll let go of it. I'm trying
[24:19] Speaker 3: to find a hand on what happened. Now, what happened? Will!
[24:25] Speaker 4: Will!
[24:26] Speaker 10: While we were out, you and me, that is, Hype.
[24:28] Speaker 12: A guy come to the door with a message for you.
[24:30] Speaker 12: Get out of the still right away.
[24:31] Speaker 3: A guy? What guy? I thought he was sent by Milt. No,
[24:34] Speaker 3: he wouldn't send a guy. He's gone. Until you came out. Sam,
[24:38] Speaker 3: what did you butt in for?
[24:39] Speaker 12: Now, Hype, you'd better listen to what I got to say.
[24:42] Speaker 2: Tell him, Sam.
[24:43] Speaker 3: Gladys, you shut up or I'll brain you. All right,
[24:46] Speaker 3: let's have it, Sam. All right. You think I'm a chatterhead,
[24:48] Speaker 3: don't you?
[24:49] Speaker 12: But I figured out right from the start you had
[24:51] Speaker 12: a racket.
[24:51] Speaker 3: And the minute that.
[24:52] Speaker 12: Guy talked about it, still I was sure of it.
[24:54] Speaker 1: So, so?
[24:55] Speaker 3: So I want a job. Here, working for you.
[24:57] Speaker 2: We're at the famous Flanagan Sisters corn syrup company.
[25:00] Speaker 3: Or else I talk.
[25:02] Speaker 12: Ben!
[25:03] Speaker 2: You told me you only wanted to help her.
[25:06] Speaker 3: Get up, Penny. You'll talk. To the counter-spot. Oh, Bright Eyes,
[25:12] Speaker 3: you listen to me.
[25:13] Speaker 4: Now, hold your horses, Hype.
[25:15] Speaker 3: Just give me a job and I won't talk. Talk,
[25:17] Speaker 3: you big fat fool, you! That message wasn't for Milky.
[25:21] Speaker 2: It was a counter-spy gag, a trap, and you walked
[25:24] Speaker 2: into it, and I got to walk into it too
[25:26] Speaker 2: to get you out.
[25:27] Speaker 3: Give me a job, Eastford. Give me a job, you
[25:30] Speaker 3: rocked head.
[25:31] Speaker 2: I might be out of business altogether before morning.
[25:33] Speaker 8: Oh, Hype.
[25:34] Speaker 3: I don't buy all that, Hype. You can't brush me
[25:36] Speaker 3: off that easy.
[25:37] Speaker 6: What?
[25:40] Speaker 3: Vinnie. Go on up in the car. Stay there. We
[25:44] Speaker 3: may have to leave bad. I'll douse all the lights
[25:47] Speaker 3: in here.
[25:49] Speaker 11: Sam?
[25:50] Speaker 3: You win. You and Gladys, come on with me.
[25:53] Speaker 2: I'll show you something.
[26:02] Speaker 6: There you see, Sam?
[26:08] Speaker 3: Where my flashlight shows now? The alcohol's not a thing.
[26:13] Speaker 3: From here to this cellar, the alcohol gets piped to
[26:15] Speaker 3: my corn syrup factory.
[26:17] Speaker 2: Our pipeline runs two miles in an abandoned sewer we found.
[26:21] Speaker 3: Gosh, what a setup. I sure got to hand it
[26:25] Speaker 3: to you, fella. I'm glad. Yeah, it's remarkable. Sam, how
[26:31] Speaker 3: would you like to stay here?
[26:33] Speaker 4: Work here?
[26:34] Speaker 9: Sam.
[26:34] Speaker 3: Sam, he's up to something. Price, you take us out
[26:39] Speaker 3: of this cellar this minute. Yeah. Yeah, I... Let's talk
[26:43] Speaker 3: about it outside. Well, talk right here. I don't believe
[26:48] Speaker 3: there was any message. You rushed Vinnie off her feet.
[26:50] Speaker 3: Now you want to sneak out? Squeal on me. You rotten,
[26:54] Speaker 3: counter-vice tool.
[26:55] Speaker 12: Pardon me?
[26:56] Speaker 3: You're crazy.
[26:57] Speaker 5: Shut it up!
[26:58] Speaker 9: My family's quiet. You stay here.
[27:00] Speaker 3: With them, got it? He's out. No air.
[27:12] Speaker 4: We'll die down here, you murdering....
[27:17] Speaker 3: So long, both of you. For good.
[27:20] Speaker 5: Benny, why don't you outside like.
[27:27] Speaker 3: I told you?
[27:31] Speaker 9: Oh, Cardor, I'm scared.
[27:32] Speaker 3: It's dark and creepy in here.
[27:34] Speaker 4: Cardor.
[27:34] Speaker 3: Holy smoke, we've got to get out of here. But
[27:36] Speaker 3: we can't leave Sam and Garnet. Never mind them. Come on,
[27:38] Speaker 3: it's a side door. But Sam and Garnet... Oh, sorry. What? Oh,
[27:42] Speaker 3: that door was in the cellar where you were just outside.
[27:44] Speaker 4: But Sam, Garnet, it's over here. Gordon, Mrs.
[27:48] Speaker 3: Gordon, stand where you are. How does it look, Gordon? Oh, good, Gordon,
[27:52] Speaker 3: drop the gun. Stop resisting, Gordon. The entire building's running.
[27:56] Speaker 3: I don't want to get hurt. That's better. Handcuffs for Gordon, Peter.
[28:00] Speaker 3: With pleasure.
[28:01] Speaker 2: Gordon, you and all of your men are under arrest
[28:03] Speaker 2: for making and selling illegal alcohol. Just now as we
[28:06] Speaker 2: came in, we found Sam Vandervoort and his wife in
[28:08] Speaker 2: the cellar.
[28:09] Speaker 3: You'll be charged with their attempted murder.
[28:11] Speaker 2: Sam's a dirty stool-pitcher.
[28:16] Speaker 3: He was working for the counter-spy. My own brother-in-law.
[28:20] Speaker 2: You're wrong, Gordon. We only tricked him to trick you
[28:23] Speaker 2: into leading us here to your cell. Now your entire
[28:25] Speaker 2: racket smacks. All right, Peters, have these people held outside,
[28:29] Speaker 2: and we'll start taking this place apart.
[28:42] Speaker 4: When your friends drop in, be generous, but be thrifty, too.
[28:46] Speaker 4: Serve plenty of delicious Pepsi-Cola. Pepsi's big 12-ounce bottle gives
[28:51] Speaker 4: you not just one sparkling glassful, but two. Get a
[28:54] Speaker 4: carton of six and serve 12 delicious drinks. Yes, Pepsi
[28:59] Speaker 4: is America's biggest cola value. You get twice the tangy taste,
[29:03] Speaker 4: twice the refreshment, twice the Pepsi. So why take less
[29:07] Speaker 4: when Pepsi is best? Whenever you reach for refreshment, remember...
[29:12] Speaker 4: Pepsi Cola hits the spot. Two cold glasses, that's a lot.
[29:16] Speaker 4: Lot more value, lot more zest. Why take less when
[29:19] Speaker 4: Pepsi's best? Tune in every Tuesday and Thursday, same time,
[29:23] Speaker 4: same station, to Counterspy. Listen on Thursday for the exciting
[29:27] Speaker 4: Counterspy case of the Vicious Visitor. Tangling with the criminal
[29:32] Speaker 4: I call the Vicious Visitor was dangerous for all concerned.
[29:35] Speaker 4: For his prison guards, it meant a beating in the dark.
[29:39] Speaker 4: For his partner, bullets.
[29:42] Speaker 2: And for the woman who had once known him, it
[29:43] Speaker 2: meant death for her husband, death for herself. I invite
[29:48] Speaker 2: you to be tuned in on Thursday.
[29:50] Speaker 4: To Case of the Vicious Visitor on Counterspy. Tonight's Counterspy
[30:03] Speaker 4: program originated in New York, was directed by Leonard L. Bass,
[30:06] Speaker 4: dramatized by Paul Milton, and featured Don McLaughlin and Mandel
[30:10] Speaker 4: Kramer with music by Jesse Crawford. Counterspy is a Philip H.
[30:15] Speaker 4: Lord production for Pepsi-Cola. Enjoy some Pepsi ice cold tonight.
[30:42] Speaker 1: Welcome back! Okay, Ralph Bell as Gordon is kind of
[30:47] Speaker 1: in an interesting spot. He often plays underworld characters and
[30:52] Speaker 1: usually they're pretty ruthless with little regard.
[30:56] Speaker 4: For human life.
[30:58] Speaker 1: Here, Gordon is restrained because he actually likes his wife
[31:04] Speaker 1: and doesn't want to mess things up with her by
[31:08] Speaker 1: getting tough with her brother but he gets pushed to
[31:13] Speaker 1: his limit as David Harding uses the most devastating weapon
[31:19] Speaker 1: he has at his disposal in-laws now we already discussed
[31:24] Speaker 1: listener support appreciation campaign on Tuesday on Tarzan I do
[31:31] Speaker 1: want to go ahead though and let you know what
[31:33] Speaker 1: plans we have for Saturdays Counterspy will continue on for
[31:40] Speaker 1: much of the season, but there are a lot of
[31:43] Speaker 1: missing episodes. So next year, you will eventually be listening
[31:49] Speaker 1: to Voyage of the Scarlet Queen on Saturdays. This is
[31:55] Speaker 1: such a great series. I've been waiting years for an
[31:58] Speaker 1: occasion to do it, and I hope that you enjoy
[32:01] Speaker 1: it as well. Listen to our comments and feedback now,
[32:05] Speaker 1: and we have this comment from YouTube regarding an episode
[32:11] Speaker 1: we played a bit a ways back. It's the Bouncing
[32:16] Speaker 1: Bank Robber, episode A0098. This seems like a terribly planned
[32:24] Speaker 1: operation by Counterspy. They decided to start moving in while
[32:29] Speaker 1: a passenger ferry was departing literally one block, one building
[32:36] Speaker 1: away without even posting anyone to cut the guy off
[32:40] Speaker 1: when they allegedly blocked all the exits. And yeah, this
[32:45] Speaker 1: is a fair point because they were aware that the
[32:49] Speaker 1: ferry was there and it seems to that you could have,
[32:55] Speaker 1: you know, sent somebody to block the ferry. At the
[32:57] Speaker 1: very least, you could have just had the ferry not operating, uh,
[33:04] Speaker 1: until the, uh, suspect Hondo was taken in. But to
[33:10] Speaker 1: be fair, Hondo did force the issue prematurely. So maybe
[33:16] Speaker 1: not everyone was in place, but covering the ferry was
[33:20] Speaker 1: kind of basic. Uh, And what explanation can be offered
[33:26] Speaker 1: for why Harding didn't make sure that the ferry was secure?
[33:33] Speaker 1: You know, to paraphrase a YouTuber, so that the radio
[33:37] Speaker 1: show could happen. Which is not a great excuse. You
[33:41] Speaker 1: wish the writers could have found something else. But they're like, hey,
[33:44] Speaker 1: this is a thrilling scene. And it was, so let's
[33:47] Speaker 1: go with it. All right, well, now it's time to
[33:50] Speaker 1: thank our Patreon supporter of the day. And thank you
[33:54] Speaker 1: to Tom, Patreon supporter since August of 2022, currently supporting
