[1:13] Speaker 1: But now, from January nineteenth, nineteen fifty two, here is
[1:18] Speaker 1: the Lynn Halstead murder case.
[1:34] Speaker 2: Broadways might beat some times for it. The Columbus Circle,
[1:38] Speaker 2: the Guardian, the most Violent, the lonesomest mile in the World.
[1:48] Speaker 3: Broadways My Beat with Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover.
[2:03] Speaker 2: Broadway tyles down to another year's living. The days begin
[2:06] Speaker 2: to drift backward again, away from you like they did
[2:09] Speaker 2: last year, and it starts all over. Punch the time card,
[2:13] Speaker 2: smile at the boss, and the income tax forms can
[2:16] Speaker 2: be picked up at any bank or branch post office.
[2:19] Speaker 2: But there's still the dream, and it could happen on Broadway.
[2:23] Speaker 2: It's the corner of the world where a million performers
[2:25] Speaker 2: do their bit just for you. It's Carnival and a
[2:28] Speaker 2: clown and a girl with yellow hair blowing kisses, the
[2:32] Speaker 2: end of a ride that costs you a dime. Maybe
[2:35] Speaker 2: you'll get your money's work. There were no dreams where
[2:45] Speaker 2: I was in the big room, the chill room, the
[2:47] Speaker 2: room of the lost dead, the city Morgue, the man
[2:51] Speaker 2: with me, the seeker of sorrow, a father, and she
[2:53] Speaker 2: wanted to laugh. Letter I got from and told me
[2:56] Speaker 2: how much she missed that Cromit. Not that she didn't
[2:58] Speaker 2: like New York, but big so hot to make man. Yeah,
[3:03] Speaker 2: you want to look now, doctor Houston? Yes, doctor, how
[3:11] Speaker 2: did she die? Hearing shot? I mean shot? Where's to find? Look? Doctor?
[3:21] Speaker 2: I want to know where was she found? The river?
[3:25] Speaker 2: She's been here for three days. No, No, I want
[3:28] Speaker 2: to look at her. I want to look at her faith.
[3:31] Speaker 2: You haven't said it directly, doctor, she is your daughter.
[3:36] Speaker 2: My touch feeling all right? Doctors, I just want to doctor,
[3:42] Speaker 2: sit how long has Lin been in New York about
[3:50] Speaker 2: three years. She left acting on her eighteenth birthday. She
[3:54] Speaker 2: didn't have much trouble getting jobs as far as I knew.
[3:56] Speaker 2: Her last employment was at a private secretary, private secretary
[4:00] Speaker 2: with whom she didn't say. She just mentioned it was
[4:02] Speaker 2: a real estate office and that she liked her work.
[4:04] Speaker 2: Where did she live here in town? I addressed my
[4:07] Speaker 2: letters to her at the Linden Apartments in Fantasy Park.
[4:13] Speaker 2: Pleased us to leave me alone with her? For everyone
[4:20] Speaker 2: and know that outside the light of the winter's morning
[4:22] Speaker 2: is brilliant, dazzling. It strikes the frost veiled chrome of
[4:26] Speaker 2: the city. But here it must filter through steel webbed windows,
[4:30] Speaker 2: reflect off the faces of the dead, grow dim. Here
[4:34] Speaker 2: it lies against the closed eyes of a man who
[4:36] Speaker 2: has made the journey, found at its end his child's death.
[4:41] Speaker 2: Then his hand reaches out to the girl's part, draws
[4:44] Speaker 2: aside a strand of hair. It tries to smooth away
[4:47] Speaker 2: the pain, the shock that had been frozen there, and
[4:50] Speaker 2: walk away from it. Because this is an image of
[4:52] Speaker 2: vanguish scene, too many times go down to the Lindon Apartment,
[5:01] Speaker 2: yellow ivy clinging to all marble facing the steel fenced
[5:05] Speaker 2: Winter's Garden, whose paths can be walked only by those
[5:08] Speaker 2: privilege for the key to its gates. Gramercy Park brought
[5:12] Speaker 2: to a man who, among his other duties, had dispent
[5:15] Speaker 2: such a key to Lynn Halstead.
[5:17] Speaker 4: You understand it's quite a privilege, our private little park.
[5:20] Speaker 4: And I must say of miss Halstead, she availed herself
[5:22] Speaker 4: up at par to rally for what reasons?
[5:25] Speaker 2: I shudder to think, Why, mister Clement, Why do you shudder?
[5:28] Speaker 4: Well, after all, it is rather desirable to maintain residents
[5:31] Speaker 4: here in Gramercy. I could show you waiting list year's
[5:34] Speaker 4: long has lived here. Of course she lived here, but
[5:38] Speaker 4: so sporadically, weeks on weeks would go by with her
[5:41] Speaker 4: apartment standing for lawn empty lonely.
[5:45] Speaker 2: You're saying, mister Clement, that she lived here.
[5:47] Speaker 4: But didn't only use this as the mailing address I've
[5:50] Speaker 4: hear in a kind of phone service, or what reason?
[5:53] Speaker 2: I know, you shudder quite to see.
[5:56] Speaker 5: Her mail box is filled with uncalled for levers.
[6:00] Speaker 2: Yeah, from a doctor hosted relative, given from.
[6:05] Speaker 4: The apartment stores, book clubs, and these phone methodes. This
[6:09] Speaker 4: man has been calling for three days now, I keep
[6:12] Speaker 4: telling him miss Linne isn't in leaves his number, not
[6:14] Speaker 4: his name, of course, no one else to.
[6:17] Speaker 2: Give it to. Now he is there, show me her apartment, mister,
[6:20] Speaker 2: I did like to do.
[6:21] Speaker 4: It's one of our most desirable.
[6:22] Speaker 2: Now I'm free to inform the management that which one isn't.
[6:26] Speaker 2: Just down the hall here we are.
[6:37] Speaker 4: Oh what a mess, what a frightful mess, the dis arrayed,
[6:41] Speaker 4: the things left about.
[6:43] Speaker 2: Why these stains on our carpets? Blood stains? Yeah, that
[6:49] Speaker 2: kind of stein. That means she must have been here
[6:53] Speaker 2: when she here in Gramercy Park. Where's the phone? Why there?
[6:57] Speaker 2: They're under that French doll. Gotta call that number I
[7:00] Speaker 2: gave you. That's that man?
[7:08] Speaker 5: Kay h.
[7:15] Speaker 2: James montro Who is this? That's the police, mister Blake?
[7:19] Speaker 2: Where are you?
[7:21] Speaker 1: One of coffee?
[7:23] Speaker 2: Stay there, I'll be here, h something for you. Coffee'd
[7:50] Speaker 2: be fine, brushed on it and just coffee. M M
[8:02] Speaker 2: traffic here you take free? This is fine. Your name
[8:07] Speaker 2: Jean Blake, that's right. Oh you must be the phone
[8:10] Speaker 2: call I had a little while ago. My name is
[8:11] Speaker 2: Stanley Toober. You're the policeman. You know a girl named
[8:15] Speaker 2: Lynn Halsted? Sure I do. One was the last time
[8:18] Speaker 2: I saw her. You tell me first, Danny, what's the trouble.
[8:22] Speaker 2: She's dead, She's not dead. I've got a date with
[8:24] Speaker 2: her tonight. When it was the last time you saw her.
[8:28] Speaker 2: I see the four days ago, the last time we
[8:30] Speaker 2: talked to her, when I haven't talked to her, but
[8:33] Speaker 2: since the last time I saw her, she's dead. Cut
[8:35] Speaker 2: it out with you. This morning her father identified her
[8:37] Speaker 2: at the morn. There's no doubt about it. I said,
[8:39] Speaker 2: cut it out with you. So that's why, that's why. Well,
[8:45] Speaker 2: I've been calling her, you know, to talk to her,
[8:47] Speaker 2: to remind her about that day. Tonight. She was never
[8:49] Speaker 2: in She never returned my cause in her hospital six
[8:55] Speaker 2: Lynn was murdered. She was found. I want you to
[8:58] Speaker 2: tell me. I don't want you to tell me. You
[9:02] Speaker 2: know it for long August, I think it was. I
[9:07] Speaker 2: didn't get to fall in love with it until September.
[9:09] Speaker 2: I'll just meet her Jimmy, and she wanted him here
[9:11] Speaker 2: one night late shat down man Head coffee. She talked
[9:15] Speaker 2: to me and thought my line of patty was kind
[9:17] Speaker 2: of We got along that so I closed joint, took
[9:21] Speaker 2: her dancing. Neither one of us did things very well,
[9:25] Speaker 2: or dance, a conversation things. That's why we got along, sipce.
[9:29] Speaker 2: Did you see her off them? Yeah? A couple of
[9:31] Speaker 2: times a week, sometimes three, a movie, walking or drink.
[9:36] Speaker 2: It's funny though I never took her home. She wouldn't
[9:38] Speaker 2: let me just give me her phone number. Do you
[9:41] Speaker 2: know where she worked? The secretarial or something. A couple
[9:44] Speaker 2: of times I picked her up in front of the
[9:46] Speaker 2: Equitable Building. I guess there, but she never said, you'll
[9:50] Speaker 2: be here whenever I want you, Jim, Yeah, where am
[9:55] Speaker 2: I going to go? Gather up the pieces that had
[10:01] Speaker 2: once shaped the pattern of a girl's life. An apartment
[10:04] Speaker 2: in Gramercy Park, for mail, for phone messages, for death,
[10:08] Speaker 2: her wandering on to a man who then walked with her,
[10:10] Speaker 2: advanced loved her, a father who had seen her lying
[10:14] Speaker 2: in the morgue, and against them, the barrier of secrecy
[10:17] Speaker 2: the girl had woven out of the city's darkness. Not
[10:20] Speaker 2: to tell them where she worked, to give them only
[10:22] Speaker 2: a phone number, a mailing address, against the sudden need
[10:25] Speaker 2: of her and take what Jean Blake has given you,
[10:28] Speaker 2: among other things, the name of a building, the Equitable Building.
[10:32] Speaker 2: Find it. In the forties on Madison, try it a
[10:40] Speaker 2: and after many real estate offices and receptionists who live
[10:43] Speaker 2: or not moist enough, had to be moistened again before
[10:45] Speaker 2: answering the policeman. After the long parade of friendly real
[10:49] Speaker 2: estate brokers, with the bone crush, her handclasp, and the
[10:52] Speaker 2: sorrow of not knowing a girl named Blynn Halstead, find
[10:56] Speaker 2: the man who did know her, whose private secretary she was,
[11:00] Speaker 2: John Martin real Estate. Don't look anymore. We'll find you
[11:05] Speaker 2: a home.
[11:05] Speaker 5: And I mean it, mister Glover.
[11:06] Speaker 2: I'm dedicated to it.
[11:08] Speaker 6: Why it's the passion of John Martin's wife finding the
[11:11] Speaker 6: right home for.
[11:12] Speaker 2: The right people. It must be gratifying when you do,
[11:15] Speaker 2: mister mit, Oh it is. Let me test you. What
[11:17] Speaker 2: it is photographing your desk, mister Mattin. Yeah, your family?
[11:20] Speaker 7: Yeah?
[11:21] Speaker 6: Oh I like you for that, mister Glover, I like it.
[11:23] Speaker 6: If I'm taking notice or something like that, go on,
[11:25] Speaker 6: think it. I'll take a good long look at it.
[11:29] Speaker 6: Fine looking boy. Yes, this woman is Missus Martin, my dog,
[11:35] Speaker 6: my sister, my mother, my wife takes care of me
[11:37] Speaker 6: like I was a baby with a cor.
[11:41] Speaker 2: Now you were saying about Lynn founder in the river
[11:45] Speaker 2: shot to death. She lay in the more three days
[11:47] Speaker 2: before anyone identified her, and one finally did. He Yes,
[11:51] Speaker 2: her father, doctor Stephen Houston. He came from Macron to
[11:55] Speaker 2: take his daughter home. She'd written him she wanted to
[11:57] Speaker 2: go home. No, don't know. A girl who works for
[12:02] Speaker 2: your day in and day takes your dictation.
[12:04] Speaker 6: Remind you it's a wife's birthday, trudges across the street
[12:07] Speaker 6: on her own time to bring your coffee and snack,
[12:10] Speaker 6: and police finding a river.
[12:14] Speaker 2: Don't you didn't know she wanted to go home. Oh,
[12:17] Speaker 2: it's like a boat from the blue, mister Clilver. I
[12:21] Speaker 2: thought Lynn was happy here working for me.
[12:23] Speaker 5: She told me many times.
[12:24] Speaker 6: How glad she was, how I'd helped her to finally
[12:27] Speaker 6: cover a niche for.
[12:28] Speaker 2: Herself in this crazy town. Yeah, it was something I
[12:31] Speaker 2: said before, mister mind. Lynn was in the morning for
[12:33] Speaker 2: three days. No one came to identify her. I should
[12:37] Speaker 2: have done that.
[12:42] Speaker 6: A girl is beautiful, she takes three days off. I'm
[12:48] Speaker 6: not the man to question such wins. She could have
[12:52] Speaker 6: gone a week or a month, A job would have
[12:54] Speaker 6: still been here for her. But there are other private secretaries,
[12:58] Speaker 6: How you're kidding?
[12:58] Speaker 2: None like Lynn? Why excuse John Martin real estate.
[13:04] Speaker 6: Oh yeah, yes, thanks, Yeah, this is doctor called every
[13:12] Speaker 6: real estate agent in the equitable building.
[13:13] Speaker 2: Danny, I'm an emergency. Would get down here. I'm busy.
[13:16] Speaker 2: I assure you're busy.
[13:17] Speaker 5: So am I low? Keep?
[13:19] Speaker 8: Just get down here, fast, all down, We'll go, Doctor Siinsky, Fine, very,
[13:46] Speaker 8: doctor Sinsky.
[13:47] Speaker 2: Hello, Danny.
[13:50] Speaker 9: It never stops it all right? Just tell me what
[13:52] Speaker 9: happened for a code over there on the chair. She
[13:55] Speaker 9: was worrying when she was brought in here at ten
[13:56] Speaker 9: o'clock and under the nightdown she has wandering around the
[14:02] Speaker 9: street that way?
[14:04] Speaker 2: What happens to people? Danny? Who is she? Who is she? Wait?
[14:12] Speaker 2: Miss can you hear me me? I want you to
[14:17] Speaker 2: tell me your name, miss.
[14:21] Speaker 5: Name?
[14:22] Speaker 2: I want you to tell me again.
[14:24] Speaker 10: When when.
[14:44] Speaker 3: You are listening to Broadway is My Beach, Written by
[14:47] Speaker 3: Morton Fine and David Bridgen and starring Larry Thorr as
[14:51] Speaker 3: Detective Danny Clover and homes all over the country, everything
[14:56] Speaker 3: stops for the laughter. When it's Jack Benny time, Jack

[15:02] Speaker 3: at the hands of his fun loving gang. You can
[15:04] Speaker 3: be sure you'll get it. When Mary Dennis Rochester, Phil
[15:07] Speaker 3: and Don go to work on him. Enjoy Jack Bennytime
[15:10] Speaker 3: Tomorrow night and every Sunday night on CBS Radio. The
[15:24] Speaker 3: new year has taken hold now, and already Broadway scurries.
[15:28] Speaker 2: To quicken his passing. There are ways to do that.
[15:31] Speaker 2: Add more neon to burn away the night times, more
[15:34] Speaker 2: masters in the spectaculars, to wink away the long darkness,
[15:39] Speaker 2: the illusions. No new ones, kid, last year's models heat
[15:43] Speaker 2: it up and with a new paint job, no one'll
[15:45] Speaker 2: know the difference. Need an illusion, kid, to pass the
[15:48] Speaker 2: time for free. Just reach in the bank. Every color,
[15:52] Speaker 2: every size faded a little, worn a little. But at
[15:56] Speaker 2: these prices, what do you expect, Big Red Rose all
[16:00] Speaker 2: we were tears, preach in kid, take your pick and
[16:03] Speaker 2: hurry because Broadways waiting in line. But the lost girl
[16:12] Speaker 2: who had wandered the city drifted on winters when this
[16:15] Speaker 2: was no illusion, Nor was her slow still dying.
[16:20] Speaker 9: I tell you this, Danny, this girl could have stayed
[16:22] Speaker 9: alive even with the.
[16:24] Speaker 2: Bullet wound that is in It mean she wanted to die.
[16:27] Speaker 9: No, No, I don't think so. I think what made
[16:31] Speaker 9: her get out of whatever bed she was in, made
[16:33] Speaker 9: her walk in the cold, only in the nightgown and
[16:35] Speaker 9: the COVID. What made her do that was something in shock.
[16:39] Speaker 2: Maybe hurt, maybe your memory. You're saying that if she'd
[16:42] Speaker 2: stayed where she was, she wouldn't have to die. What
[16:45] Speaker 2: else moves?
[16:47] Speaker 9: The wound had been tended to, the bullet removed three
[16:50] Speaker 9: four days ago, profession, the healing had already begun to
[16:54] Speaker 9: take hold. It was not the work of a clumsy man.
[16:58] Speaker 9: It was the work of a profession a doctor, for sure.
[17:01] Speaker 9: That something very noble. I'm saying to you, this girl
[17:06] Speaker 9: undid what was done for her.
[17:09] Speaker 2: Can't she be moved? Yeah, it won't matter. Put her
[17:12] Speaker 2: in a room upstairs. All right. We've been going all
[17:17] Speaker 2: around it, Danny. We haven't let ourselves dwell. And what
[17:20] Speaker 2: she told them because she was Linn Halsted, that she
[17:23] Speaker 2: was Lynn Holsted. I'll make a call doctor Holsteed, the
[17:27] Speaker 2: man who called another dead girl his daughter. Tell him
[17:31] Speaker 2: to get here quickly, Danny and nothing. Just tell him
[17:36] Speaker 2: to get here quickly. One more thing, doctor, Well, don't
[17:39] Speaker 2: plant to any reporters. I don't want this to get
[17:41] Speaker 2: out to Danny. Please get this girl's father here quickly.
[17:58] Speaker 2: You could only explain to me, mister club of why
[18:01] Speaker 2: why are you ask me to come down here? After
[18:03] Speaker 2: we get all the explanations you need, Doctor Houston, very well,
[18:06] Speaker 2: here is it my mind, this is do go ahead
[18:13] Speaker 2: doctor on the other side of the stream, Len.
[18:20] Speaker 10: Hell on, man it we are right, No, daddy, of
[18:25] Speaker 10: course it will all right now.
[18:27] Speaker 2: Yes, I can't go away again.
[18:30] Speaker 5: I waited. It was so long.
[18:33] Speaker 2: It was just a little gun and that's no more
[18:36] Speaker 2: than an hour, it seems, seem don't talk, Lynn disclosing. Yeah,
[18:53] Speaker 2: my daughter is dead. Yes, I'm sorry. This is my dad.
[19:00] Speaker 2: This is Lin, that other girl, one of the morgu
[19:03] Speaker 2: Who is she? I don't know. I've never seen her before.
[19:11] Speaker 2: It's over. I suppose you have to do something about me,
[19:16] Speaker 2: an obstruction of justice doctrine. There'll be something in the charge.
[19:20] Speaker 2: You want to talk with me now outside? All right?
[19:27] Speaker 2: All right, Donald, I got to New York four days ago.
[19:30] Speaker 2: I came here to bring Wyn home. I found her
[19:33] Speaker 2: apartment house, and I found Lin. She didn't shot doctor,
[19:38] Speaker 2: did you she? I found Lynn. She was dying when
[19:42] Speaker 2: I got I didn't shoot her, mister Kob. But you
[19:44] Speaker 2: can think so. I don't care. I really don't if
[19:46] Speaker 2: you want me to say I shot her, and you
[19:48] Speaker 2: want to charge me with that, It's all right if
[19:50] Speaker 2: you want me to, I'll say I did. Just tell
[19:53] Speaker 2: me what happened at Houston. She'd been shocked, she was
[19:56] Speaker 2: barely conscious. Tell you who shot her? No, she cried
[20:00] Speaker 2: when she saw me, That's all. Then she went into
[20:02] Speaker 2: sharp after that. After that, she just baked about her childhood,
[20:09] Speaker 2: about her home, about the far away here. And you
[20:14] Speaker 2: were a doctor, you removed the ballatry. Yes, I didn't
[20:17] Speaker 2: know whether she was going to live. I just sat
[20:20] Speaker 2: beside her and waited for her to say the person's
[20:22] Speaker 2: name who shot her. There were phone calls and people
[20:25] Speaker 2: knocking on the door. I never moved from her side,
[20:27] Speaker 2: but she never spoke the person's name who shot her?
[20:31] Speaker 2: Or how did she get away from her? And I
[20:34] Speaker 2: came to the morgue this morning, then was gone when
[20:38] Speaker 2: I got back. I guess she wandered around looking for
[20:42] Speaker 2: me or looking for something. I don't know. Why did
[20:45] Speaker 2: you come to the morning, Those phone calls, those people
[20:49] Speaker 2: at the door. I suddenly realized that one of them
[20:52] Speaker 2: might be my daughter's assailant. And the doctor. I've been
[20:56] Speaker 2: in morgues before, there was a good chance to be
[20:58] Speaker 2: an unidentified girl in your monk there was. I identified
[21:03] Speaker 2: her as lin because I wanted to keep Linn alive
[21:07] Speaker 2: and did all that. You put a gunder the police.
[21:11] Speaker 2: I'm here now, and you'll do what you have to do. Annie,
[21:29] Speaker 2: What do you want? You know?
[21:31] Speaker 11: At least look at me when you ask me what
[21:33] Speaker 11: do I want? Where you stand at the window staring
[21:36] Speaker 11: out into the nowhere in the beyond gives a person
[21:38] Speaker 11: you're going sorry. You know my eldest Tina does the
[21:42] Speaker 11: same thing, a star up from coal windows.
[21:45] Speaker 2: What am I to do with you too? How I'm
[21:48] Speaker 2: looking at your sergeant, I ask again, what do you
[21:50] Speaker 2: want to give you?
[21:51] Speaker 11: Things like the doctor Hallstead is now being held by
[21:54] Speaker 11: the DA for Raymond, go ahead, thank you.
[21:59] Speaker 5: The more whom.
[22:00] Speaker 11: Doctor Holstead called his daughter, has been identified. It's time
[22:03] Speaker 11: for sure. Oh and miss Lily Follette a frequent of
[22:07] Speaker 11: bars where there was frequent mayhem. The last one she
[22:10] Speaker 11: so attended course of her life. Our boys have ascertained
[22:13] Speaker 11: it was there she was shot from their cost into
[22:15] Speaker 11: the river. Several characters are now being held on suspicion.
[22:18] Speaker 2: Of hummed anything else.
[22:20] Speaker 11: They rundown under Truelin Horstead, the girl who it goes
[22:24] Speaker 11: without saying. Miss Holsteed left Akron, arrived in our city
[22:28] Speaker 11: three years ago. Chris checks with her father's testimony. While
[22:31] Speaker 11: here attempted all the things bright out of town girls
[22:34] Speaker 11: attendant Ramar school modeling.
[22:36] Speaker 2: What else? What else?
[22:38] Speaker 11: Is that our checkers have discovered where miss Holstead was
[22:41] Speaker 11: staying when she was not staying at the Linden apartments.
[22:44] Speaker 3: Oh indeed, our.
[22:46] Speaker 11: Checkers, having gone over Miss Holsteed's place at the Linden
[22:49] Speaker 11: with fine tooth and comb, came up with the commuter's
[22:51] Speaker 11: ticket to Long Island in Holy Tanks and the Long
[22:54] Speaker 11: Island they went.
[22:55] Speaker 2: You want to tell me what they found? You know?
[22:57] Speaker 11: A cottage, small, quick sound and highway own buy Miss Halsted?
[23:02] Speaker 11: Nice going for a secretary to maintain two residences.
[23:06] Speaker 2: Nice going to you too? You know you understand everything
[23:20] Speaker 2: now often I think so I can go over it
[23:23] Speaker 2: for you again if you want, I'll be okay, use
[23:26] Speaker 2: this phone. I'm listen in on the extension. Go ahead,
[23:31] Speaker 2: try to act hurt.
[23:33] Speaker 10: I'll try, Lieutenant, but I've never been shot. Hella John,
[23:47] Speaker 10: It's it's Lynn.
[23:51] Speaker 5: Who is it?
[23:52] Speaker 10: Lynn? Lynn Halstead? Right where you left me. You know
[24:00] Speaker 10: where I am? John? All right, Lieutenant?
[24:03] Speaker 2: Just fine?
[24:05] Speaker 7: H h.
[24:33] Speaker 2: Then Lenna, Oh, sit down, mister Marco, I said, sit down,
[24:45] Speaker 2: that's right. Where's Lynn dead? I don't believe you. I'll
[24:52] Speaker 2: talk to you.
[24:53] Speaker 5: Look once before you told me Lynn was dead. I
[24:55] Speaker 5: just talked to Lynn less than an hour ago.
[24:57] Speaker 2: That's funny. She's dead?
[24:59] Speaker 5: Whereas she aaron a bedroom?
[25:02] Speaker 2: You want to see her?
[25:03] Speaker 5: Died after she called me?
[25:04] Speaker 2: Huh? You want to see her? Mister Martin?
[25:06] Speaker 12: No, no, I have a good stand. Well, I guess
[25:12] Speaker 12: I'll be going, mister Clover. I guess the papers will tell.
[25:15] Speaker 5: Me the where and plant about it.
[25:16] Speaker 2: That's Guneral, don't go, mister Markham. Why not? Then's not
[25:22] Speaker 2: in her bedroom? She died hours ago.
[25:26] Speaker 12: I don't get you. What are you doing playing crazy games?
[25:29] Speaker 12: You get your kicks playing with a dead girl's name?
[25:32] Speaker 12: She is here, she isn't here, she's dead, she isn't dead.
[25:36] Speaker 12: Who called me anyhow?
[25:38] Speaker 2: Police woman?
[25:39] Speaker 5: Policewoman? Well be proud, funny funny game you policeman play?
[25:46] Speaker 2: Why did you come here? Mister Markham?
[25:47] Speaker 12: I'm a sucker for phone clothes. A girl calls and
[25:49] Speaker 12: tells me she's alive. I get happy about it, and
[25:51] Speaker 12: I call it cat.
[25:52] Speaker 2: That's not the reason. Read my mind for me, all right.
[25:56] Speaker 2: You came here to finish what you started out to do,
[25:58] Speaker 2: to kill in Housetead. I got to take this from you. No,
[26:00] Speaker 2: you can just submit to arrest. Come downtown, call a
[26:03] Speaker 2: lawyer and tell him you're being held for murder. Even
[26:06] Speaker 2: let you call your family, tell them the same thing.
[26:12] Speaker 2: What's on your mind? You didn't know whether Lynn was
[26:14] Speaker 2: dead or alive, and for just now did you? You
[26:17] Speaker 2: just knew the girl who was first identified as Lynn
[26:20] Speaker 2: wasn't really her.
[26:21] Speaker 5: You told me she was. I believed you. I shouldn't.
[26:23] Speaker 2: I believe you didn't believe me. The first time I
[26:24] Speaker 2: talked to you. You knew the girl dragged out of
[26:26] Speaker 2: the river wasn't Lynn, because how could Lin have gotten
[26:28] Speaker 2: to the river. You must have gone out of your mind, mister,
[26:32] Speaker 2: shoot her girl? And there's no no news of the shooting,
[26:36] Speaker 2: just waiting and a girl has identified as Lynn holstaid.
[26:39] Speaker 2: You knew it wasn't Lynn Holstead at all. All you
[26:41] Speaker 2: could do was wait, what are you mixing me up?
[26:43] Speaker 5: In this war? Anyhow?
[26:44] Speaker 2: I got a family, I had a family. When Lynn
[26:47] Speaker 2: Holst did walk into your office, she's a beautiful girl,
[26:51] Speaker 2: and I told her that how much were you paying
[26:53] Speaker 2: her as the secretary?
[26:55] Speaker 5: Well, well she was a good secretary. I paid her
[26:57] Speaker 5: seventy five dollars a week.
[26:58] Speaker 2: She could have recorded her play here at the Lena
[27:00] Speaker 2: de Poppins Man.
[27:01] Speaker 5: She started at fifty, but I raised her at seventy five.
[27:04] Speaker 2: How could she afford to buy that cottage in Long Island?
[27:11] Speaker 2: I thought about that, mister Montshom, and I asked myself
[27:13] Speaker 2: a question. If a real estate broker has a friend,
[27:17] Speaker 2: then he wants to keep the friendship quiet.
[27:19] Speaker 5: Right, all right?
[27:22] Speaker 2: All right? I gave her, but she gave it back
[27:25] Speaker 2: to it, didn't she everything in it? She found her boy,
[27:27] Speaker 2: She fell in love with love.
[27:30] Speaker 12: That's love that she had with that soap slinger in
[27:34] Speaker 12: that Ten Saint restaurant.
[27:35] Speaker 2: I told you the selad do anything you wanted, but
[27:37] Speaker 2: she didn't want any strings attached to you anymore. So
[27:41] Speaker 2: you killed her.
[27:42] Speaker 5: That's love what she had with that soap slinger. Cheap movies,
[27:47] Speaker 5: walking in the park, that's love. Listen.
[27:50] Speaker 12: I've been through it when I was a young plunk.
[27:52] Speaker 12: Do you think that kind of stuff was for Lynn
[27:54] Speaker 12: you I thought I did. I'd sweated through it for
[27:57] Speaker 12: four days.
[27:58] Speaker 5: I did.
[27:58] Speaker 2: Let's go down on you think that's fire.
[28:02] Speaker 5: It's all right, children. What do you think I want anyhow? Punk?
[28:08] Speaker 5: Tell me you punk? What do you think I want? Anyhow?
[28:30] Speaker 2: Broadway is quiet now the hour without color, six o'clock,
[28:34] Speaker 2: on the hour of going home. But in a violet
[28:38] Speaker 2: night will dip down and touch the streets, and they'll
[28:40] Speaker 2: be fury again. I rack and roar and crowd the
[28:44] Speaker 2: puppet dance into a screaming furnace of light. It's Broadway,
[28:50] Speaker 2: the gaudiest, the most violent, lonesomest mile in the world.
[28:56] Speaker 2: Broadway might beat.
[29:14] Speaker 3: Broadway is My Beat stars Larry Thor as Detective Danny Clover,
[29:19] Speaker 3: with Charles Caliptasta Taglia, and Jack Krushian as Muggavan. The
[29:23] Speaker 3: program was produced and directed by Elliott Lewis, with musical
[29:26] Speaker 3: score composed and conducted by Alexander Courage. In Tonight's story,
[29:30] Speaker 3: William Conrad was heard as John Martin and Herb Butterfield

[30:11] Speaker 3: Sunday on the CBS Radio Network.
[31:11] Speaker 1: Welcome Back. Pretty mysterious set up, but with a pretty
[31:19] Speaker 1: standard solution where a woman decided she wanted a real
[31:25] Speaker 1: relationship rather than just all the trappings that money could buy,
[31:32] Speaker 1: and her benefactor is unable to deal with it. Good
[31:36] Speaker 1: job acting by William Conrad. I had to chuckle a
[31:40] Speaker 1: little bit because someone posted on one of the YouTube
[31:45] Speaker 1: versions of this episode. Someone posted a spoiler for the episode,
[31:50] Speaker 1: but I uh slightly messed it up. They said that
[31:53] Speaker 1: Robert Conrad did it wrong. Actor my friend all right?
[31:58] Speaker 1: Listener comments and feeback now now and Naomi comments regarding
[32:03] Speaker 1: the John Dottson murder case, infidelity equals outside interest with
[32:10] Speaker 1: a laughing smiley. I missed gold fashion euphemisms. Then some
[32:16] Speaker 1: comments on our listener survey, we have this from Jim

[32:27] Speaker 1: great podcast. And Alan rites I've been listening to this

[33:22] Speaker 3: About the arrangements your husband made with Daniels to Leasea's apartment,
[33:25] Speaker 3: Miss Cameron.
[33:26] Speaker 13: When it was all this we could go Monday, the
[33:27] Speaker 13: day after I moved down here. My husband and Ralph
[33:30] Speaker 13: Ashby saw the rental ad in the paper and they
[33:32] Speaker 13: went over and talked to Daniels. He said, all right,
[33:34] Speaker 13: he had an apartment for the Ashby's one for us,
[33:37] Speaker 13: nice places too.
[33:38] Speaker 2: See.
[33:38] Speaker 13: Ralph and my husband signed the leases, gave him the
[33:40] Speaker 13: first and last month's rent in advance.
[33:42] Speaker 10: Was all decided.
[33:43] Speaker 2: Well, how is it you couldn't move in right away,
[33:44] Speaker 2: miss Canton?
[33:45] Speaker 13: He said he was having an apartment house redecorated. Daniels,
[33:48] Speaker 13: did I mean? He told Ralph and my husband the
[33:50] Speaker 13: apartments would probably be ready for us on the eighth
[33:52] Speaker 13: That was yesterday, he said, the ninth, for sure, And
[33:55] Speaker 13: that's today.
[33:55] Speaker 3: And you tried to move in this afternoon and Daniel's
[33:58] Speaker 3: refused to let you in.
[33:58] Speaker 13: As that is, I had the movers get all our
[34:00] Speaker 13: things out of storage and move them out to the apartment.
[34:02] Speaker 13: So then my girlfriend Doris the movies. We're just starting
[34:05] Speaker 13: to get our furniture out of the van and moving
[34:06] Speaker 13: into the apartment with mister Daniel showed up. He acted
[34:09] Speaker 13: like a crazy man.
[34:10] Speaker 2: Want'd you give you any reasons why he couldn't move in?
[34:12] Speaker 13: We tried to give us a lot of reasons. None
[34:14] Speaker 13: of them made me sin.
