[4:35] Speaker 3: I mean, how did you manage it?
[4:38] Speaker 2: Mister?
[4:39] Speaker 3: I know these new jet flights are pretty fast, but Johnny,
[4:43] Speaker 3: you haven't been fooling around with some of those rocket ships.
[4:47] Speaker 2: No, no, no, I'm afraid not. I I just happened
[4:50] Speaker 2: to be here already. See, I was working on a
[4:53] Speaker 2: case of a Marrow Bay and did you Yeah? It
[4:56] Speaker 2: came out all right.
[4:57] Speaker 3: Well, congratulations, john You are a one day and I
[5:02] Speaker 3: think you deserve some kind of a reward for it.
[5:05] Speaker 3: So maybe I'll think of something.
[5:07] Speaker 2: Oh well, thanks, but that won't be necessary.
[5:09] Speaker 3: What you say. I know that I'm deeply indebted to you.
[5:13] Speaker 3: But the things you've done for me, it's Johnny.
[5:15] Speaker 2: Well, I don't worry about it.
[5:17] Speaker 3: What you say? Nice, You've talked to you.
[5:20] Speaker 2: Goodbye? Now wait a minute, right, weas a minute, can't
[5:25] Speaker 2: you see I'm busy what you sent for me?
[5:27] Speaker 3: I did?
[5:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, you called Hartford said you wanted to see me
[5:30] Speaker 2: right away?
[5:31] Speaker 3: Oh of course, idea, what's the matter with you? Anyway?
[5:35] Speaker 3: Of course I want to see you. Jonathan Peebles too, right, away.
[5:40] Speaker 2: Who is Jonathan Peebles.
[5:41] Speaker 3: He's an old friend of mine. He lives out here.
[5:44] Speaker 3: I telephoned him to come running too.
[5:46] Speaker 2: Oh well, what's it all about, mister guy? Right?
[5:48] Speaker 3: Just you get yourself all over here to my house
[5:50] Speaker 3: and I'll tell you, and don't you waste any time.
[5:53] Speaker 2: You're just hear it pretty important? Huh important?
[5:56] Speaker 3: It's fight.
[5:57] Speaker 2: Well, there's somebody threatening you something like that.
[6:00] Speaker 3: I said, it's important, Johnny, and I mean important.
[6:04] Speaker 2: Okay, mister right, I'll be right over r Johnny, Yes, sir, yeah,
[6:13] Speaker 2: old man kind ride was as wacky as a bed bugy.
[6:16] Speaker 2: But what build Ferguson that told me was true. A
[6:19] Speaker 2: lot of people had tried over the years to get
[6:20] Speaker 2: to him and get to his money. So I pulled
[6:23] Speaker 2: the desk for a Navis rent a car and started
[6:25] Speaker 2: down from my room. I say started. The youngster came
[6:28] Speaker 2: barreling down the hallway chasing a hula hoop. Was probably
[6:31] Speaker 2: a very nice kid, a great joy to his parents,
[6:34] Speaker 2: and may even grow up to be president of the
[6:36] Speaker 2: United States. But as I started out the door, that
[6:39] Speaker 2: hoop caught me between the knees.
[6:42] Speaker 1: Door.
[6:50] Speaker 2: I came to a couple of hours later on the
[6:52] Speaker 2: table at the dispensary, I guess you'd call it. There
[6:55] Speaker 2: at the hotel, I was conscious of a good looking
[6:58] Speaker 2: blonde and starched quite uniform standing beside me holding a
[7:01] Speaker 2: lot of cotton. He winches from my face. That's better, now,
[7:06] Speaker 2: that's better. Now once more, take a good deep breath inhale,
[7:12] Speaker 2: mister Dallan.
[7:14] Speaker 5: You know.
[7:18] Speaker 2: What the smelling salts. You had quite a bang on
[7:21] Speaker 2: the head. Yeah, you just see what you did to
[7:24] Speaker 2: that metal door panel when the child's parents said that
[7:26] Speaker 2: if there's anything they can do there, No, oh, nurse,
[7:29] Speaker 2: where's my coat? Oh but you want to rest?
[7:33] Speaker 5: Oh?
[7:33] Speaker 2: Sorry, I got to get out of here, and thanks.
[7:40] Speaker 2: I dashed out to where my rental car was waiting
[7:42] Speaker 2: for me and drove to the address of North Roxbury
[7:44] Speaker 2: Drive and a wealthy section of Beverly Hills. A beat
[7:46] Speaker 2: up turning car that must have dated back to the
[7:48] Speaker 2: early thirties was parked in the driveway. The front door
[7:51] Speaker 2: of the house too wide open, the kit writes. The
[7:57] Speaker 2: kit writes, Oh, hello, is that you? He isn't here?
[8:03] Speaker 2: What are you, mister dollar? I mean, are you mister dollar?
[8:07] Speaker 2: That's right, I'm Jonathan Peeble's Alban's friend. And oh, mister Dollar, Yeah,
[8:13] Speaker 2: what's the matter. He's gone. Something's happened to him? And oh,
[8:16] Speaker 2: mister dollar, well yeah, well from what I saw, from
[8:20] Speaker 2: what I've found around here, Oh, mister Dollar, he's been murdered.
[8:26] Speaker 2: What I'm sure of it. He's been murdered. Mister Crankwright
[8:49] Speaker 2: has been murdered. Oh mister Dollar, what can we do?
[8:53] Speaker 2: What happened? How long have you been here? He telephoned,
[8:55] Speaker 2: He told me to come over here, that it was
[8:57] Speaker 2: very urg Yeah, he told me the same thing. But
[9:00] Speaker 2: he often does that, you know how he is always
[9:02] Speaker 2: has to see me right away immediately, and often it's
[9:05] Speaker 2: just for some little thing like sharing some ice cream
[9:08] Speaker 2: with him. I seeing the new flower that's coming, the
[9:11] Speaker 2: blue lost anything, now, that's why I didn't hurry coming
[9:15] Speaker 2: over here. And anyhow, Betsy doesn't like to be push
[9:19] Speaker 2: That's my nice old car that's parked out front. Didn't
[9:22] Speaker 2: you see it? Oh? Yeah, sure. I named it Betsy,
[9:25] Speaker 2: after an old white horse I used to have when
[9:27] Speaker 2: I first came to California's a wonderful horse. Would you
[9:30] Speaker 2: believe how old she was? When she's No, And I
[9:33] Speaker 2: don't care now about mister kit right, Oh yeah, oh,
[9:37] Speaker 2: dear mister dollar. When I finally got here a few
[9:40] Speaker 2: minutes ago, I was surprised to find the front door
[9:43] Speaker 2: standing wide open. But then I wasn't surprised either. If
[9:47] Speaker 2: you know what I mean, I certainly do not know
[9:49] Speaker 2: what you mean. I mean that he often left it
[9:52] Speaker 2: open that way, and I told him a thousand times
[9:54] Speaker 2: he shouldn't do it, that it was careless of him,
[9:56] Speaker 2: and that one of these days I'm roughia knowing about
[9:59] Speaker 2: all the money he had. Well, I told him, mister done, Yes,
[10:02] Speaker 2: I'm sure you did, but that doesn't do us any good.
[10:04] Speaker 2: Right now, Look, before we go any further, mister, people's
[10:07] Speaker 2: just who are you one of the many of Alvant
[10:09] Speaker 2: card Writ's eccentric old wealthy friends. No, I beg your pardon.
[10:14] Speaker 2: I didn't quite mean that the way it sounds. I
[10:16] Speaker 2: should hope not believe me. I may be eccentric, but
[10:19] Speaker 2: I am not wealthy. It wasn't for beneficial finance. I
[10:22] Speaker 2: couldn't even keep up the payments on bits. You mean
[10:25] Speaker 2: to say you're still making on I'll wait a minute,
[10:27] Speaker 2: mister Cardrid, Oh yes, of course, So well, anyway, I
[10:31] Speaker 2: came into the house and I called to him, and
[10:33] Speaker 2: I looked around for him, but there was no one here,
[10:36] Speaker 2: no servants. No, And anyway, he keeps changing them so
[10:39] Speaker 2: often that well, I just can't keep up with him.
[10:42] Speaker 2: So I looked all through the house. Any sign of
[10:44] Speaker 2: a struggle or anything like that. No, no, no, no no.
[10:47] Speaker 2: Then I looked out the window and I saw them.
[10:50] Speaker 2: Who's them? Two men walking up the driveway from back
[10:53] Speaker 2: where the garage is. What did they look like? They were, well,
[10:56] Speaker 2: they were awfully rough looking, but they were well dressed,
[11:00] Speaker 2: so I thought perhaps they were a couple of Alvin's
[11:02] Speaker 2: youth servants. I hadn't met, But I'd only thought about
[11:06] Speaker 2: that tour robe they were carrying and the way it
[11:09] Speaker 2: was drifted. Wait a minute, what's a tour robe. Oh,
[11:12] Speaker 2: it's like a big, heavy suitcase. Like a small wardrobe. Trunquilly,
[11:15] Speaker 2: It's more like a suitcase. It was heavy, they could
[11:19] Speaker 2: hardly carry it. And oh, mister dollar, wait a minute. Listen.
[11:23] Speaker 2: You said it was dripping. Oh yes, yes, yes, yes, yes,
[11:26] Speaker 2: oh all over the dry Come on, I think we
[11:29] Speaker 2: better take a look and close that front door. Yes,
[11:33] Speaker 2: come on. These men were coming from the garage. That's right, yes,
[11:37] Speaker 2: but Alvin doesn't have a car, so what could they
[11:40] Speaker 2: be doing? There is that where he kept us all luggage, yes,
[11:43] Speaker 2: and the frozen food dock and some garden tools. Oh
[11:47] Speaker 2: oh there now look yes, oh oh yes, it's it's blood.
[11:54] Speaker 5: Isn't it.
[11:56] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[11:57] Speaker 2: They killed him, dismembered him then, Oh, mister doll. I
[12:08] Speaker 2: made a hasty inspection of the garage. Nothing. I found
[12:12] Speaker 2: no sign of a struggle anywhere in the house. I
[12:14] Speaker 2: tried to get a description of the men he'd seen
[12:16] Speaker 2: from Jonathan Peeple's but I'm afraid he wasn't much help.
[12:19] Speaker 2: And yet with that funny mind it is. Oh, dear
[12:22] Speaker 2: mister Dollar, I'm afraid I'm soode distraught, and I just
[12:25] Speaker 2: can't remember it all. Look, they must have had a car,
[12:29] Speaker 2: mister Peoples. Did you notice a car out front? Car? Oh? Yes, yes, yes, yea,
[12:34] Speaker 2: I did, all right, can you describe it to me? Yes,
[12:37] Speaker 2: it was a touring car in nineteen thirty one. Oh no, no, no,
[12:40] Speaker 2: that's my car. Oh great, But there was another at
[12:44] Speaker 2: the end of the driveway. And mister Dona, I've seen
[12:47] Speaker 2: that car before time. Well, it was a four door sedan.
[12:51] Speaker 2: It was a big car. It was silvery on the
[12:54] Speaker 2: sides and a cream color on top, like vanilla ice cream,
[12:57] Speaker 2: you know. And the license number was see if you
[13:00] Speaker 2: won six? Oh lord, you are sure of that. Oh,
[13:03] Speaker 2: I never forget things like that. And you say, I've
[13:05] Speaker 2: seen it before many times. At the dock, at the
[13:08] Speaker 2: Malibu Dock. That's where he keeps the Alpa car. Who
[13:12] Speaker 2: keeps the what where Alvin keeps the Alpa car. Here's
[13:15] Speaker 2: yacht Alp car, Alvin pee. Okay, okay, it's a pretty
[13:19] Speaker 2: slim leave. But come on, And I was a slim one,
[13:25] Speaker 2: believe me. But I couldn't see calling in the police
[13:27] Speaker 2: until I had something more definite to give them. Well,
[13:29] Speaker 2: here we can take betsys. Are you kidding? I'll make
[13:33] Speaker 2: better time in mind? Oh yes, of course. We cut
[13:36] Speaker 2: out through Westwood, then Santa Monica, and then hit the
[13:38] Speaker 2: Coast Highway and headed Norton. Finally we've pulled over at
[13:44] Speaker 2: the entrance of the Malibu Dock. Look, that's the car
[13:48] Speaker 2: I told you about, park there at the side. Yeah,
[13:50] Speaker 2: and it looks like coming here may pay off for us.
[13:54] Speaker 2: The boat, the Alpa car, It isn't it? The morning. White. Oh, why,
[14:00] Speaker 2: I'm missus feebles. Have you seen mister cock right this morning?
[14:03] Speaker 5: Right?
[14:03] Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't notice his boat went out so how
[14:06] Speaker 2: long ago? Oh, I'd say ten to fifteen minutes. Yeah,
[14:11] Speaker 2: see you out there going up towards Point Doom. Yeah,
[14:14] Speaker 2: I said, but those two men, Yeah, they had the
[14:17] Speaker 2: shore boat take him out to the outfit car. Yeah,
[14:20] Speaker 2: well I ord to see him. What do you mean
[14:22] Speaker 2: that little trunk that they was carrying. You see what
[14:24] Speaker 2: I'm mopping up, the messy trailer left all over the
[14:27] Speaker 2: pier for me to clean up. Yes, sir, I ought
[14:30] Speaker 2: to assume him. Who is all of that means that
[14:36] Speaker 2: taking Elvin cock Write's dismembered body after seed to dispose
[14:40] Speaker 2: office and on his own office. He's got to find
[14:42] Speaker 2: something fast enough to catch up with it. Out there. Well,
[14:45] Speaker 2: there's that that Thompson cruiser of Larry Comstock's tied up there.
[14:48] Speaker 2: That's Comstock, who has a boat motor shop in Los Angeles. Enough, well,
[14:52] Speaker 2: he had a couple of Big Johnson's on the fastest
[14:54] Speaker 2: one that's out here. Now, call him on the phone,
[14:56] Speaker 2: tell him me borrow it. I'm why it's an emergency,
[14:58] Speaker 2: and that we'll pay him plenty for the U. Well, now,
[15:00] Speaker 2: I don't know if you really are what I do
[15:02] Speaker 2: and listen. Call a coast guard in Santa Monica. Have
[15:04] Speaker 2: him send out a patrol boat. Come on, people, say,
[15:06] Speaker 2: put mister Dara, those men on the off of Desperados
[15:09] Speaker 2: there kill us. I'll say, then stay here in the dark.
[15:11] Speaker 2: I'll go on along. No, Alvin was my friend. I
[15:16] Speaker 2: shall help to avenge his untimely deaths. Maybe I should
[15:27] Speaker 2: have left him behind. Of course I had a gun
[15:29] Speaker 2: with me, but that wouldn't keep him from stopping a
[15:31] Speaker 2: bullet at the men afoord. The Alpha car decided to
[15:33] Speaker 2: shoot it out. I opened the throttle wide on the
[15:36] Speaker 2: twin out boards, and within fifteen minutes we overtok the
[15:38] Speaker 2: big seventy five foot yacht. Much to my surprise, it
[15:41] Speaker 2: was simply cruising along. Of course too, i'll suspicion. That's
[15:46] Speaker 2: why mister Dollard. Yeah, possibly, Yet it must be pretty
[15:49] Speaker 2: clear to him there were chasing them. Look for the
[15:51] Speaker 2: men at the wheel. That's one of the Ruffians I
[15:54] Speaker 2: saw carrying the trunk with Alvin. Believing the party in
[15:57] Speaker 2: this Ruffian man, that's sure. And there's the other coiling
[16:01] Speaker 2: up the fruits up on the board. Deck's chills. You're
[16:04] Speaker 2: going to stay down long, mister. People's stopping the boat again.
[16:07] Speaker 2: There's gonna be any shoe up theirs. Alven, what's years?
[16:11] Speaker 4: Alban?
[16:12] Speaker 2: He just came upon Dick. You're right, haven't you seen
[16:16] Speaker 2: mister Donad? They put him together again? Yes, those children, Alvin, Alvin,
[16:22] Speaker 2: who we are here? We've come to your rescue. Then,
[16:27] Speaker 2: n what a surprise? And Johnny Dalla, now what are
[16:33] Speaker 2: you doing out here? Are you kidding?
[16:37] Speaker 5: What?
[16:38] Speaker 2: Oh? Of course I remember now.
[16:41] Speaker 6: I wanted to take you out for a nice long
[16:43] Speaker 6: ride in my lovely yacht.
[16:45] Speaker 2: Huh.
[16:45] Speaker 6: Of course, that's why I called you, Johnny. I think
[16:49] Speaker 6: you deserve something nice like this for all the good
[16:52] Speaker 6: working Dan, and you've done so many fine things for
[16:55] Speaker 6: me over the years. I decided I should take you
[16:58] Speaker 6: on a nice long cruise and you could relax and
[17:03] Speaker 6: eat and sleep and finish.
[17:06] Speaker 2: And that's why you call the insurance company to get
[17:10] Speaker 2: in touch with me. That's right. I wasn't that a
[17:13] Speaker 2: great idea? And I invited Jonathan along too, But an
[17:18] Speaker 2: awfully funny thing happened, Johnny, Yes, sir, Johnny.
[17:22] Speaker 6: The minute we left the doc.
[17:24] Speaker 2: I gu just knew there was something else that I'd
[17:26] Speaker 2: forgotten that and you know what the words don't tell me.
[17:30] Speaker 6: Of course, however, I've forgotten to wait for you, Jonathan.
[17:35] Speaker 2: Oh, now isn't that the funniest thing? Yeah, mister, now,
[17:41] Speaker 2: just a minute, m what about those two men, those
[17:45] Speaker 2: terrible cures. What did you say right there beside you?
[17:50] Speaker 2: They killed you, they murdered you, and they Oh what
[17:54] Speaker 2: am I saying? Wait a minute, Yeah, you're thinking you
[17:58] Speaker 2: said something else you forgotten.
[18:01] Speaker 6: That's right, you and Jonathan. I forgot to wait for
[18:04] Speaker 6: you at the house. And then when we started off,
[18:07] Speaker 6: I were Oh, wasn't it silly? I forgot all about you?
[18:11] Speaker 2: What what was the other thing?
[18:13] Speaker 3: The other thing?
[18:14] Speaker 2: Oh?
[18:15] Speaker 6: Yes, yes, Oh, the other thing that I'd forgotten was
[18:19] Speaker 6: the trunk full of nice, thick, juicy hinderline steaks that
[18:24] Speaker 6: I'd set aside in the garage.
[18:25] Speaker 2: For this trip. But it was not real trunk, just
[18:28] Speaker 2: with two ropes that I had out in the garage.
[18:31] Speaker 2: But I remember that the minute we came on board,
[18:33] Speaker 2: and so I had to send Gerald and Harold back
[18:36] Speaker 2: to the house. And there's card again and there minute,
[18:39] Speaker 2: Butler and Cook, Oh they are the nicest boy. Oh,
[18:42] Speaker 2: Gerald and Harold come over here to the rail. So
[18:45] Speaker 2: my friends, don't wait, Eldren Wade, you you need to
[18:49] Speaker 2: see those men standing there beside you.
[18:52] Speaker 6: Now, why don't you and Johnny come onboard and I'll introduce.
[18:55] Speaker 2: Him to you. Oh wait just a minute. Then all
[18:58] Speaker 2: that blood, all that blood that was dripping out of
[19:02] Speaker 2: that trunk, Oh, wasn't that o? And he was all
[19:07] Speaker 2: my fault because I let the steaks fall out too
[19:10] Speaker 2: much over the trees, bood.
[19:17] Speaker 3: And we'll take the I p for you.
[19:20] Speaker 2: Come on now, you know something. It's crazy, it's wild,
[19:28] Speaker 2: but it does my heart good to get tangled up
[19:29] Speaker 2: in something like this sometimes helps keep away the ulcers.
[19:33] Speaker 2: As for the expense account, forget it. Alvin Peabody Cartwright
[19:37] Speaker 2: shoved a check into my hands before I left that
[19:39] Speaker 2: would cover the expense account a dozen times over. As
[19:42] Speaker 2: for Larry Comstock, the man who's boat had appropriated, I
[19:45] Speaker 2: want to hear the story of what had happened. He
[19:46] Speaker 2: wouldn't accept a penny for it. So that's that, yes, truly,
[19:51] Speaker 2: Johnny Dollar, here is our star to tell you about
[20:06] Speaker 2: next week's story instead of telling you about next week. Sean,
[20:09] Speaker 2: congratulations to station, w DBJ and Roano Virginia thirty five
[20:14] Speaker 2: years on the air. Pretty good, hunh, Yours truly, Johnny Dollar.
[20:26] Speaker 2: Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, starring Bob Bailey, originates in Hollywood
[20:31] Speaker 2: and has written, produced and directed by Jack Johnstone. Heard
[20:35] Speaker 2: in our cast were Virginia, Greg Geene Tatum, Howard mcneer,
[20:39] Speaker 2: Boris Lewis, Joseph Kerns, and Paul Duball. Be sure to
[20:43] Speaker 2: join us next week, same time and station or another
[20:46] Speaker 2: exciting story of Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar. This is Dan
[20:50] Speaker 2: cobberly speaking, Well, I'll.
[21:00] Speaker 1: Come back well. Most websites have the title misspelled, but
[21:06] Speaker 1: John Abbott, in his book Though, who is Johnny Doller Matter,
[21:13] Speaker 1: has the correct spelling of steak for life at Stake now.
[21:19] Speaker 1: Doubtless some listeners thought if they looked up at the
[21:22] Speaker 1: title and saw what it was, thought I had misspelled it.
[21:25] Speaker 1: But I have not. According to Abbott, that's what's on
[21:29] Speaker 1: the title page, and I love it.
[21:32] Speaker 5: Now.
[21:33] Speaker 1: This is one of those cases where you might think
[21:37] Speaker 1: that Cartwright is referring to some sort of action that
[21:43] Speaker 1: happened off air, but it's actually a case that aired
[21:48] Speaker 1: on December twenty eighth, nineteen fifty eight, and was in
[21:52] Speaker 1: that whole stream of lost episodes that closed out nineteen
[21:58] Speaker 1: fifty eight. It was actually the second appearance of Alvin
[22:03] Speaker 1: Peabody Cartwright. It was the first time the character was
[22:08] Speaker 1: portrayed by Howard mcneer. The first time Cartwright appeared was
[22:15] Speaker 1: in The Loss of Memory Matter in nineteen fifty seven,
[22:20] Speaker 1: and the part was played by Poorly Bear and it
[22:23] Speaker 1: was a very different portrayal, and there was a little
[22:27] Speaker 1: bit of eccentricity, but Alvin was only in the story
[22:31] Speaker 1: a few minutes, which focused on him instructing Johnny to
[22:37] Speaker 1: guard some goods he wanted to donate to a museum
[22:40] Speaker 1: and to keep them safe from his worthless nephew who
[22:46] Speaker 1: was coming along to guard them but had his own designs. Now,
[22:52] Speaker 1: Howard mcneer actually played another eccentric millionaire, Jedediah Gillis, and
[23:00] Speaker 1: kind of a trilogy of strange animal stories, including a
[23:04] Speaker 1: singing mouse, a talking dog, and a cat who had
[23:08] Speaker 1: inherited a fortune. In his final story, Gillis had at
[23:13] Speaker 1: last canceled his policy with Floyd's of England, and bought
[23:17] Speaker 1: his own insurance company. By letting mcneer reinvent the character,
[23:24] Speaker 1: john Stone could have mcneer playing off Bailey in that
[23:28] Speaker 1: great way, unburdened by the tropes of Jededi Gillis, and
[23:36] Speaker 1: also the decision to buy the insurance company. Now, if
[23:41] Speaker 1: you are blastioning in your mind, how Johnny ended up
[23:47] Speaker 1: in California after the last episode we wrapped up had
[23:52] Speaker 1: him in New York, this shows that rejuggling of scripts
[23:59] Speaker 1: once again sabotage Johnstone's efforts at continuity. Now, nobody else
[24:05] Speaker 1: who ran the show tried to do this, and generally,
[24:10] Speaker 1: if you have a series, you know, like Sam Spade,
[24:13] Speaker 1: every episode is set in San Francisco, or you have
[24:17] Speaker 1: a series where it's all said in the same place.
[24:21] Speaker 1: He was trying to have continuity from one week to another.
[24:25] Speaker 1: The challenge during this era was that financially, radio couldn't
[24:31] Speaker 1: be the priority for a lot of actors. He would
[24:34] Speaker 1: want to use because people loved, you know, doing radio
[24:39] Speaker 1: if there was nothing else on, But if they were
[24:42] Speaker 1: getting paid for a TV show or for a movie,
[24:46] Speaker 1: he'd have to work around that. And that's where I
[24:48] Speaker 1: suspect most of the juggling came from. Now it's time
