[2:10] Speaker 1: airdate on this one is March the seventeenth, nineteen fifty three,
[2:15] Speaker 1: and this one is the King's Necklace Man.
[2:20] Speaker 2: John lund As Yours Truly Johnny dot expense account submitted
[2:39] Speaker 2: by Special Investigator Johnny Dallar to home office Eastern Indemnity
[2:43] Speaker 2: and Insurance Company, Hartford, Connecticut. The following is an accounting
[2:47] Speaker 2: of expenditures during my investigation of the King's Necklace matter.
[2:55] Speaker 2: Expense account it of won one hundred and thirty four
[2:58] Speaker 2: dollars and seventy cents airfare and incidentals between Hartford and Miami.
[3:03] Speaker 2: Waiting at the airport has promised, was your Southern States
[3:06] Speaker 2: Agency Manager Marty Fenton. Over a cup of brew in
[3:10] Speaker 2: the coffee shop, he briefed me on the assignment. Ever
[3:16] Speaker 2: heard of King Rawlings? Johnny King Rawlings financial tacooon, Wasn't
[3:21] Speaker 2: he retired some fifteen twenty years ago, that's the lad.
[3:25] Speaker 2: About a year ago he wrote a policy and a
[3:27] Speaker 2: quarter of a million dollar necklace that he owned, which
[3:29] Speaker 2: has suddenly turned up among the missing. Not yet you
[3:32] Speaker 2: expect it to now.
[3:33] Speaker 3: We got a letter from him day before yesterday he
[3:36] Speaker 3: claimed somebody attempted to break into his safe. Thinks they
[3:39] Speaker 3: were after the necklace. Well, I'm usually sent for after
[3:41] Speaker 3: the crime has been committed. True, my lad, True, past
[3:44] Speaker 3: the sugar?
[3:45] Speaker 2: Will you pray? Sure? So what am I doing here now?
[3:50] Speaker 3: The policy is coming up for renewal, Johnny, And there
[3:52] Speaker 3: have been nasty rumors circulating around about Rawling's present financial condition.
[3:56] Speaker 2: Brady's starting a build up to put in a fraudulent.
[3:59] Speaker 3: Claim done before the boys in Hartford get pretty stuffy
[4:03] Speaker 3: about that kind of skulldugree. And we want you to
[4:05] Speaker 3: check around Losponos and see what you come up with.
[4:08] Speaker 2: Is that where the gentle sea breezes wafted through the
[4:11] Speaker 2: palm trees?
[4:12] Speaker 3: Two thousand important ones? Los Banos is rolling his own
[4:16] Speaker 3: personal island off the.
[4:17] Speaker 2: Coast of Cuba. He's lived there for twenty.
[4:19] Speaker 3: Years, surrounded by his memories, his trees, and his collection
[4:23] Speaker 3: of precious stones.
[4:25] Speaker 2: People, Oh, your.
[4:27] Speaker 3: Planes waiting, Johnny. I hired a little amphib let's brush
[4:31] Speaker 3: off the collection of people. Who am I to prejudice
[4:34] Speaker 3: of stalwart investigator about to brave the dangers of rolling
[4:37] Speaker 3: xile on your way land, May the blessings of eastern
[4:41] Speaker 3: in denverity folly you even under the.
[4:42] Speaker 4: Ends of Los Bonas.
[4:49] Speaker 2: After one and a half hours of white clouds and
[4:51] Speaker 2: blue sky, the plane put down in an even bluer
[4:55] Speaker 2: sea and taxied over to a landing dock on a
[4:58] Speaker 2: picture book island. King Rowlings had collected palm trees, all right,
[5:03] Speaker 2: but I didn't know about the people. From where I stood,
[5:06] Speaker 2: there was nothing to be seen with the landing dock,
[5:08] Speaker 2: a gravel path, and those trees. The path led through
[5:15] Speaker 2: a seemingly deserted tangle of exotic flowers, sweet scented vines,
[5:19] Speaker 2: and the ever present palm trees. It was like a
[5:22] Speaker 2: tropical paradise, peaceful, serene, untouched by men. I just about
[5:29] Speaker 2: decided that nobody on this island ever made use of
[5:31] Speaker 2: this lush garden spot. When I learned that I couldn't
[5:34] Speaker 2: have been more wrong. Well, oh, wherever you are.
[5:41] Speaker 5: Over here in the clearing to your right, Hello, who
[5:49] Speaker 5: are you?
[5:50] Speaker 2: My name's Johnny Dollar.
[5:52] Speaker 5: I am NA.
[5:54] Speaker 2: I'm glad to know you, Miss Valdez.
[5:55] Speaker 5: You are the men who are arrived on the plain
[5:57] Speaker 5: a few minutes ago.
[5:58] Speaker 3: Now, I didn't think anyone heard. The hospitality is overwhelming.
[6:03] Speaker 5: You would become accustomed to it. Everyone here is too
[6:06] Speaker 5: occupied himself to bother concerning anyone else. Like me, I
[6:11] Speaker 5: have been too busy sunbathy.
[6:13] Speaker 2: Yes, so I noticed.
[6:17] Speaker 5: If it bothers you, you could hand in my rood.
[6:19] Speaker 2: Oh no, no, that won't be necessary.
[6:21] Speaker 5: See done, mister Donald. Hiks, you have come to see
[6:25] Speaker 5: the King about the attempt to steal his necklace.
[6:28] Speaker 2: Apparently sunbathing has interfered with your learning about that.
[6:31] Speaker 5: You obviously do not know King Rollings very well. Why
[6:34] Speaker 5: do you say that everyone on this island has been
[6:37] Speaker 5: accused of attempting to say.
[6:38] Speaker 2: Including you?
[6:39] Speaker 5: Why should I be an exceptions?
[6:41] Speaker 2: I was just wondering because.
[6:43] Speaker 5: I'm young and beautiful. You think perhaps I hold some
[6:46] Speaker 5: special place at esteeming King Rollings affections?
[6:50] Speaker 2: Well do you.
[6:52] Speaker 5: And you reach that stemolution?
[6:55] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[6:55] Speaker 5: Sure, the butt of my shoulders. Would you mind? It
[7:00] Speaker 5: is a difficult place for me to read.
[7:02] Speaker 2: Oh, I'll be glad to.
[7:04] Speaker 5: About the necklace, mister daughter. I would not be too
[7:08] Speaker 5: concerned about.
[7:09] Speaker 2: It if I were you oh, why not?
[7:12] Speaker 5: Well, if anyone had actually made an attempt to steal it.
[7:14] Speaker 5: The king knows who.
[7:15] Speaker 2: He is, but he still accused everybody here. Huh.
[7:19] Speaker 5: It affords him a great deal of pleasure to make
[7:21] Speaker 5: others squirm and be uncomfortable.
[7:23] Speaker 2: You don't like him very much, do you? And why
[7:26] Speaker 2: do you stay here?
[7:28] Speaker 5: Same reason as every one else? Money? Oh, that would
[7:32] Speaker 5: do nicely.
[7:33] Speaker 2: Thank you, You're welcome. You mind explaining that bit about money,
[7:38] Speaker 2: Miss Valds.
[7:40] Speaker 5: Later, perhaps my son is still warm and I wish
[7:43] Speaker 5: to take advantage of it. We will meet again.
[7:47] Speaker 2: A polite dismissal if I ever heard one.
[7:50] Speaker 5: You are wondering, perhaps why I stopped you to talk
[7:52] Speaker 5: this one.
[7:54] Speaker 2: The thought had occurred to me.
[7:55] Speaker 5: Yes, when you meet the king, get to know him
[7:58] Speaker 5: a little, I think you would understand whom. And if
[8:02] Speaker 5: I don't, I sunday here every day.
[8:06] Speaker 2: Beston, I'll think about that too. I found that Rawlings,
[8:20] Speaker 2: like all good kings, lived in a castle, this one
[8:24] Speaker 2: obviously imported stone by stone from some Moorish province. A
[8:29] Speaker 2: nervous little man came to the main gate and escorted
[8:31] Speaker 2: me inside to the baronial hall.
[8:34] Speaker 6: Harley is my name? Mister Dollar. Timothy B. Harley, I'm
[8:40] Speaker 6: mister Rowling's secretary in here, mister Rowling's study. He bedown
[8:47] Speaker 6: to Johnia shortly.
[8:48] Speaker 2: Thanks, mister Harley.
[8:51] Speaker 6: I presume you're here about the necklace, mister doner.
[8:56] Speaker 2: A favorite topic of conversation around here. Isn't it a
[9:00] Speaker 2: big part? The necklace?
[9:02] Speaker 6: Oh? Yes, across well, under the circumstances you see, the
[9:05] Speaker 6: attempted theft and all it as someone else mentioned.
[9:11] Speaker 2: It to any reason? Why they shouldn't.
[9:14] Speaker 6: Oh no, no, no, no, no no, no, don't know it
[9:16] Speaker 6: just did?
[9:16] Speaker 2: Well?
[9:19] Speaker 6: Was it Nita about days? By any chance?
[9:22] Speaker 2: What makes you think so? Why?
[9:24] Speaker 6: Nothing? Oh no, no, nothing at all? Only you see
[9:26] Speaker 6: it was away to tell you the truth. I have
[9:29] Speaker 6: suspected something for a long time. It's come to my attention.
[9:32] Speaker 7: You talk too much, Charlie.
[9:35] Speaker 6: Oh, mister Rawlings, Oh I didn't hear you come here?
[9:37] Speaker 6: And I would just tell.
[9:38] Speaker 7: Me you're from the insurance company.
[9:46] Speaker 3: That's right, Johnny Dollar, Why you instead of Murdy Fenton.
[9:50] Speaker 2: He's an agent. I'm a special investigator.
[9:54] Speaker 3: I didn't request an investigation. You made a report of
[9:57] Speaker 3: an attempt at robbery.
[9:58] Speaker 7: What do you want me to do? Have you to
[10:00] Speaker 7: declare the policy void because I didn't.
[10:02] Speaker 2: What do you want us to do? Thank you for
[10:04] Speaker 2: letting us pay out a quarter of a minion If
[10:06] Speaker 2: the necklace turns up missing.
[10:09] Speaker 7: Over here, Dolly, there's a safe I keep it in.
[10:17] Speaker 2: Pretty substantial job.
[10:19] Speaker 7: Fenton supervised the installation himself.
[10:22] Speaker 2: Those scratches near the combination, that was what made you
[10:26] Speaker 2: think somebody tried to force it.
[10:28] Speaker 7: Only a hammer and chisel could make those marks.
[10:32] Speaker 3: I'd like to see the necklace. Boy, who do you
[10:37] Speaker 3: think was after it? Either Harley or my protege need.
[10:43] Speaker 2: A well it is twice suspect them.
[10:47] Speaker 7: They love money and hate me.
[10:49] Speaker 2: You care to go into that.
[10:52] Speaker 7: You're investigating the necklace dollar, not my relationships with the
[10:56] Speaker 7: people on this island.
[11:00] Speaker 2: There it did beautiful workmanship.
[11:05] Speaker 7: What else did you expect for a quarter of a
[11:07] Speaker 7: million dollars a little more.
[11:09] Speaker 2: Than this rollings? I'm no expert on precious stones, but
[11:15] Speaker 2: ten will get your twenty if these aren't paste. Let
[11:19] Speaker 2: me see.
[11:19] Speaker 7: You're right, Dawn.
[11:25] Speaker 2: Any explanations, No, you have no idea how to switch
[11:29] Speaker 2: was pulled? I have not. When was the last time
[11:32] Speaker 2: the necklace was appraise? When the biology was written. Who
[11:36] Speaker 2: else has the combination of this safe?
[11:39] Speaker 6: No?
[11:39] Speaker 2: One kind of puts you in a spot, doesn't it?
[11:43] Speaker 7: Not at all? I'm insured.
[11:47] Speaker 2: The law says we don't have to pay off on
[11:49] Speaker 2: fraudulent claims.
[11:50] Speaker 6: I know.
[11:52] Speaker 8: The law also says you have to prove that fraud exists.
[12:05] Speaker 2: I broke the news to mart Even and looked around
[12:08] Speaker 2: for something to improve the shining hours while waiting for
[12:11] Speaker 2: him to arrive. I found it, dressed in a clinging
[12:15] Speaker 2: silk gown and a patio overlooking the sea. It was
[12:19] Speaker 2: obviously the cocktail hour. Mind if I joined him?
[12:25] Speaker 9: Oh?
[12:26] Speaker 5: Please do?
[12:28] Speaker 3: I can't make up my mind to harden for Donner,
[12:31] Speaker 3: which shows you off to greater advantage a dress or
[12:35] Speaker 3: the sunset?
[12:37] Speaker 5: For that you may have a choice of rewards. Got you, Martini?
[12:42] Speaker 2: Nothing? Thanks? Well?
[12:45] Speaker 5: What did you think of.
[12:46] Speaker 2: Him the King?
[12:47] Speaker 5: Yes?
[12:49] Speaker 2: I'm more interested in what you think of him?
[12:51] Speaker 5: I have already told you.
[12:52] Speaker 2: I know. He confirmed your statement.
[12:55] Speaker 5: That I hate him. M h you can believe it.
[12:59] Speaker 2: I do. What I want to know is why King
[13:03] Speaker 2: Rowlings is a collector stamps butterflies. How the state license
[13:08] Speaker 2: plates keep to mister dollar? How is this fascinating game?
[13:12] Speaker 2: Of his work.
[13:13] Speaker 5: He specializes in inspiring artists with little no, no talent,
[13:19] Speaker 5: actress like myself, it would be poet like Harley. He
[13:23] Speaker 5: baits his trap with the promise of money to aid
[13:25] Speaker 5: their careers, keep them dangling as long as they can
[13:28] Speaker 5: amuse him and feed his ego. Then he cast them off.
[13:32] Speaker 2: Very amusing, Yes, isn't it? But if you know what
[13:36] Speaker 2: he is, why stay on?
[13:38] Speaker 5: Oh it's much easier to cling it into a remnant
[13:41] Speaker 5: of a dream and to facety harshness of reality.
[13:44] Speaker 2: How tough would it be the face reality with a
[13:46] Speaker 2: quarter of a million dollars the necklace is gone? Is
[13:51] Speaker 2: that surprising?
[13:53] Speaker 5: No, it was too great a temptation for you, for
[13:56] Speaker 5: either of us, if we had not the combination to
[13:59] Speaker 5: that safe. No, mister Dollar, it was the King himself
[14:03] Speaker 5: was tempted.
[14:04] Speaker 2: That doesn't figure, not with his money if he still
[14:07] Speaker 2: has it, Why do you think he hasn't?
[14:10] Speaker 5: What other answer could there be?
[14:13] Speaker 2: Might be interesting to try to find out how.
[14:16] Speaker 5: You would be wasting your time?
[14:17] Speaker 2: Mister Do I've got some despair?
[14:19] Speaker 5: Perhaps I could find use for it.
[14:22] Speaker 2: I don't have any money.
[14:23] Speaker 5: Oh that was rather cruel, I'm sorry.
[14:26] Speaker 10: Oh, yes, yes, of course.
[14:29] Speaker 2: Yes, quite the excitement.
[14:31] Speaker 6: Hardy tell me, is it true that the necklace has
[14:33] Speaker 6: been stolen?
[14:34] Speaker 2: Looks like it? Why?
[14:36] Speaker 6: I wonder if that could possibly account for it? But what,
[14:40] Speaker 6: mister Rawlings, he's lying on the second floor landing. I
[14:45] Speaker 6: think he's dead.
[15:14] Speaker 2: Timothy B. Harley couldn't have been more right. King Rawlings
[15:18] Speaker 2: was lying stone cold dead on the second floor landing.
[15:23] Speaker 2: When Marty Fenton flew in three hours later, accompanied by
[15:26] Speaker 2: a Captain Puentes of the Havannah Police, I gave them
[15:30] Speaker 2: a fast briefing. Marty's reaction was predictable.
[15:33] Speaker 3: Nobody could show off this island until we learn what's
[15:35] Speaker 3: happened to that necklace? Right, Captain twenty is yes?
[15:38] Speaker 2: I agree?
[15:39] Speaker 11: So you were a fainting up to a certain point.
[15:42] Speaker 2: What point? What do you mean? The good Captain apparently
[15:45] Speaker 2: feels there might be something more important about all this
[15:47] Speaker 2: than a missing necklace.
[15:48] Speaker 3: What could be more important than a quarter of a
[15:50] Speaker 3: million in stolen jewels?
[15:51] Speaker 2: How about murder? Never ended my mind? Naturally, not Eastern
[15:55] Speaker 2: indemnity only ensured rolling stones, not his life gets ahead.
[16:00] Speaker 11: That coming Senor Dollar is quite correct, however, because of
[16:04] Speaker 11: Senor Rawlings' death is not the parent at the moment.
[16:07] Speaker 11: It will require an autopsy to determine, and if it's murdered,
[16:11] Speaker 11: we must then regard everyone who was present upon this
[16:14] Speaker 11: island with suspicion. What help can you give us regarding
[16:18] Speaker 11: that Senor dollar.
[16:19] Speaker 2: Well, just what I've told you. Outside of the servants,
[16:21] Speaker 2: only Harley, Miss Valdez and I were among those present.
[16:24] Speaker 11: And who was the last to see Senor Rawlings alive?
[16:27] Speaker 2: So far as I know, I was, But Harley could
[16:30] Speaker 2: have been with him after Rawlings left me in the study.
[16:32] Speaker 2: For that matter, Miss Valdez could have seen him too
[16:35] Speaker 2: before our little tete and ted on the patio.
[16:37] Speaker 3: Look fellows me, lads, I don't want to appear single
[16:40] Speaker 3: minded about this little affair, but we don't know whether
[16:42] Speaker 3: Rawlings was murdered or not. However, we do know Eastern
[16:45] Speaker 3: indemnities out of cool two hundred and fifty g's. If
[16:48] Speaker 3: that necklace doesn't turn.
[16:49] Speaker 11: Up payable, of course to Senor Rawlings estate, Sure who
[16:53] Speaker 11: cares who it's payable to?
[16:54] Speaker 4: What I'm interested in is not paying it.
[16:56] Speaker 2: Thinking of possible motives captain the air.
[17:00] Speaker 11: Through Senor Rollings fortune might will be suspect.
[17:03] Speaker 4: So whoever stole the necklace if Rawlings are tumbled to.
[17:06] Speaker 2: Him, and there's always plain hate, isn't there?
[17:09] Speaker 11: You have something specific in mind, Senior Dollar, just a suggestion.
[17:13] Speaker 2: Captain Twenny's had his plane fly Rollings body back to
[17:20] Speaker 2: Havana for posting while he conducted a very thorough, if
[17:24] Speaker 2: on enlightening questioning of those present. Apparently no one had
[17:28] Speaker 2: seen Rawlings after he left me in the study, had
[17:31] Speaker 2: any idea how he died or what had happened to
[17:34] Speaker 2: that necklace. Wewendy's knocked off around midnight and everyone ostensibly
[17:39] Speaker 2: went to bed. I still had a few unanswered questions
[17:42] Speaker 2: kicking around, so I went up to Harley's room to
[17:45] Speaker 2: try them out.
[17:46] Speaker 6: Why, yes, mister Dollar, mister Rawlings had a will, But
[17:51] Speaker 6: as I told Captain Fuentes, it's locked in the.
[17:53] Speaker 2: Sea and it'll take a court order and some professional
[17:56] Speaker 2: safe crackers to get at it. I know. But what
[17:59] Speaker 2: about the cop copy? It's customary for the attorney who
[18:03] Speaker 2: drew it up to retain a copy.
[18:05] Speaker 6: Oh, yes, of course, I hadn't thought Signor Chavez must
[18:09] Speaker 6: have one in Havana.
[18:11] Speaker 2: He's an attorney there.
[18:12] Speaker 6: Yes, a matter of fact, he handled most of mister
[18:14] Speaker 6: ollins financial affairs. But he must have a copy. Oh
[18:18] Speaker 6: why don't you ask him?
[18:20] Speaker 2: Oh? I will, But first I'd like to know why
[18:23] Speaker 2: you were planning to leave Los Agnles leave it?
[18:28] Speaker 6: Well? How did you know?
[18:30] Speaker 2: Well? Maybe you can think of another reason for having
[18:32] Speaker 2: a half filled suitcase lying there on your bed.
[18:35] Speaker 6: Oh? Years, of course I was planning to leave. No
[18:38] Speaker 6: reason why I shouldn't. After all, my employment here has
[18:41] Speaker 6: been terminated.
[18:42] Speaker 2: Have you discussed the idea with Captain Fluens? Well?
[18:48] Speaker 6: No, but why should he object?
[18:50] Speaker 2: I'm not guilty of anything, just a thought? Hardy mind?
[18:54] Speaker 2: If I take a look at that suitcase?
[18:55] Speaker 6: No, don't touch that.
[18:57] Speaker 2: I don't. Well what do you know around paper parcel?
[19:01] Speaker 2: Neatly wrapped and tired? Do you mind telling me what's
[19:04] Speaker 2: in it?
[19:05] Speaker 11: It's none of your business.
[19:07] Speaker 2: Put that down. It wouldn't be a necklace by any chance,
[19:09] Speaker 2: would it?
[19:09] Speaker 6: Put it down? Dollar?
[19:10] Speaker 2: Oh? Sure, right away. Well that's interesting. All new crisp
[19:18] Speaker 2: and one hundred dollars denominations must be close to ten
[19:23] Speaker 2: thousand dollars.
[19:24] Speaker 11: But what of it? It's mine?
[19:26] Speaker 2: Oh, I don't doubt that. I'm just wondering where you've
[19:30] Speaker 2: got it. I saved it working for Rawlings.
[19:32] Speaker 7: Yes, why not?
[19:34] Speaker 11: I saved it working for Rawlings.
[19:36] Speaker 2: It's mine, Okay, Holley, I don't want it. Don't you
[19:41] Speaker 2: really know why Captain Plenty's might object to your leaving now?
[19:44] Speaker 6: No, I most certainly don't.
[19:49] Speaker 2: Remarkable. There wasn't anything I could do before morning rolled
[20:00] Speaker 2: around except smoke a lass cigarette and try to think
[20:03] Speaker 2: things out. So I went out in the same patio
[20:06] Speaker 2: where Anita and I had had our talk and lit
[20:08] Speaker 2: up the one cigarette turned into two. Then I started
[20:12] Speaker 2: to light a third one. That was a mistake. I
[20:16] Speaker 2: saw the muzzle flash. It came from somewhere inside a
[20:19] Speaker 2: clump of palm trees, but with a full moon behind me,
[20:22] Speaker 2: I wasn't going to get heroic about it. I made
[20:24] Speaker 2: a diet for a concrete retaining wall. I didn't think
[20:31] Speaker 2: the shots i'd snapped out had done any good, and
[20:33] Speaker 2: I had no intention of finding out now with that
[20:35] Speaker 2: moon lighting things up, So I made myself comfortable with
[20:38] Speaker 2: my back to the wall and waited for the Cuban
[20:40] Speaker 2: Marines and the person of Captain Puentes to come charging
[20:43] Speaker 2: to the rescue. Some fifteen minutes later, Marty the captain
[20:52] Speaker 2: and I held a council of war. On our way
[20:54] Speaker 2: down to the landing ducks, I.
[20:58] Speaker 11: Found these two empty shells, one of the pump tree
[21:00] Speaker 11: signor dollars, but that was all no trace of the
[21:04] Speaker 11: person who fired him.
[21:05] Speaker 2: What about Harley?
[21:06] Speaker 11: He's not in his room. So far I've been unable
[21:09] Speaker 11: to locate him.
[21:10] Speaker 3: Hardly seems reasonable, Johnny. What could be so important about
[21:14] Speaker 3: that money you saw to make him want to kill you?
[21:16] Speaker 2: I don't know that he did, Marty, but I'd like
[21:19] Speaker 2: to ask him a couple of questions about him.
[21:21] Speaker 11: But why come down here to the boathouse, Senor?
[21:23] Speaker 6: Well?
[21:23] Speaker 2: With here a plane gone, there's only one way off
[21:25] Speaker 2: this island, crawling speedboats. We'd better make sure they're locked
[21:29] Speaker 2: up tight. One of the slips is empty. It wasn't
[21:37] Speaker 2: when I got here. We heard no boat signor Well,
[21:40] Speaker 2: that's nothing that a paddle and a pair of willing
[21:42] Speaker 2: arms can't explain. Harley, that's my guess, and it's ten
[21:47] Speaker 2: to one.
[21:47] Speaker 4: He has the necklace with him.
[21:55] Speaker 2: Expenser can item too. Five dollars and sixty five cents breakfast.
[21:59] Speaker 2: But in Havana, when Martin Fatton and I found the
[22:03] Speaker 2: book and villa and the tourist rates in full bloom.
[22:06] Speaker 2: We wanted to talk to Senor Chavez Rawlings lawyer, and
[22:10] Speaker 2: after a rough trip on one of the speedboats and
[22:13] Speaker 2: that rougher breakfast tab, we made our way to his office.
[22:17] Speaker 10: See, I have a copy of Senior Rowlings will. What
[22:21] Speaker 10: do you understand I cannot disclose its contents until the
[22:24] Speaker 10: courts so.
[22:25] Speaker 2: Order we don't want to need the tail, Senor Chavez.
[22:28] Speaker 10: Huh, but I understood you were inquiring about beneficiaries.
[22:33] Speaker 2: All we want to know is if he left anything
[22:35] Speaker 2: to Timothy Harley or Anita Valdez.
[22:38] Speaker 3: I see, we've explained the circumstances, Senor Chavez. It can't
[22:43] Speaker 3: violate any professional ethics to give us a yes.
[22:45] Speaker 4: Or no to those two names.
[22:47] Speaker 10: No, no, I do not believe it is unethical to
[22:51] Speaker 10: tell you this much. No individuals were named in the will,
[22:55] Speaker 10: only charitable and public welfare institutions.
[22:59] Speaker 2: Well, h the heir apparent angle Jenny. One more thing,
[23:04] Speaker 2: Senor Chavez. There have been rumors that Raleigh's fortune was
[23:08] Speaker 2: almost gone. Any truth to them not? They bee?
[23:11] Speaker 10: All his investments were most judiciously pleased. He was perhaps
[23:16] Speaker 10: wealthier at the time of his death and at any
[23:18] Speaker 10: time during his life.
[23:21] Speaker 2: You've been a big help. Thanks for Nala.
[23:23] Speaker 10: It is an at turner's duty to wait the low
[23:26] Speaker 10: is you know anytime you are here in Avana, please
[23:30] Speaker 10: to stop piny would be my pleasure and.
[23:32] Speaker 3: Will do any Shavis, thanks again. It was a great
[23:39] Speaker 3: help and cleaned up some loose hands, so loose necklace.
[23:42] Speaker 3: I'm worried about, Jenny. Where do we go from here?
[23:45] Speaker 2: We can check out the local police see if they've
[23:47] Speaker 2: picked up anything on Harley. Good as anything.
[23:50] Speaker 4: I guess, Oh which.
[23:51] Speaker 2: Way we passed it on the way up here.
[23:55] Speaker 9: It is most fortunate that you're still here.
[23:57] Speaker 10: There's a phone call for you in my office from
[24:00] Speaker 10: the island of Los Vegs.
[24:01] Speaker 2: Oh, thanks, Senor Shavis. There on my desk, Senor Johnny Allen,
[24:13] Speaker 2: this is Captain Pointe. Sen your dollar. I have some.
[24:16] Speaker 9: Information for you.
[24:17] Speaker 2: Oh what is it? Captain?
[24:19] Speaker 9: First of all, the autopsy report on Senior Rollings has.
[24:22] Speaker 2: Come in natural death.
[24:26] Speaker 9: See that is correct, from an old aggravated heart condition.
[24:30] Speaker 9: But how did you know?
[24:32] Speaker 2: No real reason for anybody to murder him? What else?
[24:36] Speaker 9: We have found Senor Harley's body at the northern of
[24:38] Speaker 9: the island.
[24:39] Speaker 11: Apparently his motor staffed.
[24:40] Speaker 9: And desert dashed him against the rocks. His skull was fractured.
[24:44] Speaker 2: You didn't find the necklace, aland no, but he is
[24:48] Speaker 2: the one who stole it, that makes you think. So.
[24:50] Speaker 9: In his wallet we found a slip of paper signor
[24:53] Speaker 9: on it was written the combination of.
[24:55] Speaker 1: The safe.
[25:03] Speaker 2: Expense account item three thirty five dollars transportation of speedboat
[25:08] Speaker 2: back to Los Bernice. With Captain twenty's report, there was
[25:11] Speaker 2: no need to report directly to the island, and Marty
[25:14] Speaker 2: was anxious to get back to the office and bring
[25:16] Speaker 2: you up to date, so he charted a plane and
[25:18] Speaker 2: we took off from Miami. Well, Jenny, my lad, we'll
[25:26] Speaker 2: chuck up another happy collaboration. Huh.
[25:28] Speaker 3: Yeah, you might call it that money the king there was, Yeah, somehow,
[25:33] Speaker 3: I don't think Rawlings was a very happy man, with
[25:36] Speaker 3: all his dough hold up on that island, nothing but
[25:40] Speaker 3: hate around him.
[25:41] Speaker 2: No, money is not the answer to everything. No, but
[25:44] Speaker 2: as the.
[25:44] Speaker 3: Saying goes, it sure helps. But then I guess it
[25:47] Speaker 3: didn't help Harley much either. And I wonder if we'll
[25:50] Speaker 3: ever find.
[25:51] Speaker 2: That necklace, it'll turn up pretty optimistic coun'try.
[25:56] Speaker 3: No, I'm sure of it. Oh come on, Johnny, give
[26:00] Speaker 3: where do you think it is? Right there in your briefcase.
[26:06] Speaker 4: It's not a very funny gag, Johnny.
[26:09] Speaker 2: No, Marty, it's not. How about changing the snapper? I
[26:13] Speaker 2: wish I could, Marty, But it figured all along, looking
[26:20] Speaker 2: for every possible loophole, I guess, but they all closed
[26:24] Speaker 2: up on me. Where did I slip or they all
[26:26] Speaker 2: slip at the very beginning when you first thought of it?
[26:31] Speaker 2: What tipsure? Rawlings swore that only he knew the combination
[26:35] Speaker 2: of that safe. He was wrong. One other man knew it,
[26:39] Speaker 2: the one who supervised its installation. Hum, I should have
[26:43] Speaker 2: known you'd tumbled to that. The paste pinned it down
[26:46] Speaker 2: even closer, Marty. The reproduction was too good. No wonder
[26:52] Speaker 2: you had every descriptive detail in your copy of the policy, weights, dimensions, photographs, everything.
[26:58] Speaker 2: I didn't go back to the island, Johnny. How could
[27:00] Speaker 2: I make the switch? That's where Harley came in. You
[27:03] Speaker 2: slipped him the combination, and he made the switch. That's
[27:06] Speaker 2: why the ten thousand payoff and why you had to
[27:09] Speaker 2: kill him, and the frame it as an accident.
[27:12] Speaker 4: Maybe I should have killed you too when I had
[27:14] Speaker 4: the chance on the patio.
[27:16] Speaker 2: You've still got your gun? Yeah, what's the use wrong?
[27:21] Speaker 2: All the way?
[27:23] Speaker 4: Besides, I never could outshoot you.
[27:39] Speaker 2: Expense account Item four thirty two dollars and fifteen cents
[27:45] Speaker 2: hotel bill and incidentals in Miami. Item five one hundred
[27:49] Speaker 2: and forty one dollars and ten cents plain fare and
[27:52] Speaker 2: incidentals back to Hartford. Expense account total three hundred and
[27:56] Speaker 2: forty eight dollars and sixty cents marks with all due
[28:02] Speaker 2: deference to my chosen profession. Sometimes this is a lousy business.
[28:09] Speaker 2: Here's truly Johnny Dollar.
[28:31] Speaker 12: Yours Truly Johnny Dollar stars John Lund in the title
[28:35] Speaker 12: role and was written by Sydney Marshall with music by
[28:38] Speaker 12: Milton Charles. Featured in tonight's cast were Jack Moyles, Lillian Bayer,
[28:45] Speaker 12: Tom Tully, Howard McNair, Nester Piva, and Don Diamond. Yours
[28:50] Speaker 12: Truly Johnny Dollar is produced and directed in Hollywood by
[28:54] Speaker 12: him Delvai. This is Charles Lyon inviting you to join
[29:05] Speaker 12: us again next week at the same time when from Hollywood,
[29:09] Speaker 12: John Lound returns as Yours Truly Johnny Dalla.
[30:13] Speaker 1: Welcome back. Okay, this is probably one of my favorite
[30:17] Speaker 1: stories of the Lund era. It is just so cleverly written,
[30:23] Speaker 1: with the death of the policy holder actually being this
[30:28] Speaker 1: whole red herring, and the revelation it was the insurance
[30:33] Speaker 1: agent really surprised me. I think they just did a
[30:38] Speaker 1: good job throwing us off the trail with so many
[30:42] Speaker 1: other aspects. I say it surprised me the first time
[30:45] Speaker 1: because this one did stick out in my mind because
[30:49] Speaker 1: it was so well applauded, and every time I hear
[30:52] Speaker 1: Jack Moyle's playing an insurance company guy, I kind of think,
[30:57] Speaker 1: is this that episode? And ye know, this time it was,
[31:01] Speaker 1: And I could just kind of appreciate all the little
[31:04] Speaker 1: misdirection they gave, but at the same time, they gave
[31:07] Speaker 1: you the clues so you could have figured it out.
[31:11] Speaker 1: I liked how he even started to get philosophical about
[31:15] Speaker 1: how money didn't bring happiness. You know, that was the
[31:19] Speaker 1: degree to which you know he was being sneaky and
[31:24] Speaker 1: hoping that he'd played Johnny, only to find out at
[31:27] Speaker 1: the end that he.
[31:28] Speaker 2: Had gone wrong.
[31:29] Speaker 1: And I also appreciate the realism of him not trying
[31:33] Speaker 1: some desperate getaway. These sort of scenarios were kind of irresistible.
[31:40] Speaker 1: They were like candy to many writers of the era
[31:44] Speaker 1: who just couldn't help it. But in this case, he
[31:47] Speaker 1: saw there was just no way of getting away, and
[31:51] Speaker 1: you know, all he was going to do probably was
[31:53] Speaker 1: do himself some mischief or get himself killed. So I
[31:58] Speaker 1: liked how they managed to keep the story round it
[32:00] Speaker 1: that way. Now it's time to thank our Patreon supporter
