[2:07] Speaker 2: The time comes to Broadway when the August Night summons
[2:10] Speaker 2: its mists, it's trumpets, it's banners of Neon departs the
[2:13] Speaker 2: avenue littered with its conquests, and the defeated, The once
[2:17] Speaker 2: brave revelers gather in the draining light of the spectaculars
[2:20] Speaker 2: to compare wounds to grub. In the now asylum gutters
[2:23] Speaker 2: find only the refuse of pay, the neon stained memories,
[2:27] Speaker 2: the scraps and bones of illusions. And you tear up
[2:30] Speaker 2: the embrace of your own shadow. Try to move away,
[2:32] Speaker 2: but you can't. You belong to it, kid to all
[2:36] Speaker 2: of it. And at headquarters stack the violence of the night.
[2:44] Speaker 2: Passed in a neat pile on the left hand corner
[2:46] Speaker 2: of the desk. Check the drawers for a cigarette for
[2:48] Speaker 2: the road, find none, Turn out of light, with no
[2:51] Speaker 2: last look around, Open a door, close it. Walk a
[2:54] Speaker 2: corridor whose walls are moist now with the first thin
[2:57] Speaker 2: coat of dawn. And where it turns here a voice,
[3:01] Speaker 2: and in it a quality that a policeman hears in
[3:03] Speaker 2: his sleep, a voice tuned the whittle to penetrate shock. Listen,
[3:08] Speaker 2: don't worry, may walk to You'll be your life. Lady,
[3:13] Speaker 2: you just come with me. What's you know this? Lady
[3:16] Speaker 2: dan Is?
[3:16] Speaker 4: She wanders in off the street, says she's looking for help.
[3:19] Speaker 4: She saw the police.
[3:21] Speaker 2: I want to go home.
[3:23] Speaker 5: Take me home.
[3:24] Speaker 2: Someone, don't be frightened? Will I hate it?
[3:27] Speaker 5: Ugly and dirty? And they laugh at a woman when
[3:30] Speaker 5: she all I wanted was to make friends. I bought
[3:34] Speaker 5: new things, paid their way. Why I shouldn't have to
[3:39] Speaker 5: pay the things back?
[3:41] Speaker 2: Homeless? Where is your home?
[3:42] Speaker 5: Miss They say that missus Bryce, That Elizabeth, she's a
[3:48] Speaker 5: deep one, more than.
[3:49] Speaker 6: Meets the eye.
[3:50] Speaker 5: You could like marsh fires with.
[3:53] Speaker 2: Where do they say that, missus Bryce?
[3:55] Speaker 7: In Vermont?
[3:57] Speaker 2: In the village.
[3:57] Speaker 6: When I walk down.
[3:58] Speaker 5: Main Street to shop put in provisions, I hear that
[4:03] Speaker 5: whisperers so loud.
[4:04] Speaker 2: You'll be all right, lady.
[4:05] Speaker 4: You are now with Danny Clover's hands and for an
[4:08] Speaker 4: out of town a loss.

[4:18] Speaker 2: Sure quickly water Roger your personas Price, give it them
[4:23] Speaker 2: hold on so tight. That's it. Yep, that's please. Yes
[4:30] Speaker 2: to me, thank you? What if you are anything, give
[4:35] Speaker 2: it to it you know? Oh sure, sorry, missus Price?
[4:37] Speaker 2: Here h cool, go.
[4:45] Speaker 5: Ahead, perfect a pale. Don't look like that. There's nothing
[4:52] Speaker 5: to be afraid of.
[4:52] Speaker 6: It happened of from these attack.
[4:57] Speaker 5: They comes.
[4:58] Speaker 2: Oh, missus Price, she fainted?
[5:03] Speaker 6: Shall I go up with doctor?
[5:04] Speaker 2: Sisky, shall I.
[5:06] Speaker 6: Why what can I do? Danny, tell me what?
[5:09] Speaker 2: Nothing? You know nothing, she said, And somehow it held
[5:16] Speaker 2: the attitude of it, the lost woman never to be
[5:19] Speaker 2: found again. Dead. Now the policemen standing over the two
[5:23] Speaker 2: of us, holding a paper cup of water yellow for
[5:25] Speaker 2: the tail overhead light, and the silences scurried out of
[5:28] Speaker 2: their secret places surrounded us, and only time moved to
[5:32] Speaker 2: the big faced wall clock in the corridor. It held
[5:36] Speaker 2: held until it was imprud of the farm. The car
[5:38] Speaker 2: outside to turn the corner and sped away, the festive
[5:41] Speaker 2: car with festive people. Then I got up, and I
[5:45] Speaker 2: carried the woman to a cold room and put her
[5:47] Speaker 2: on a cold bed bed labeled for autompsey and leave instructions.
[5:53] Speaker 2: Go home, sleep, sleep, meet through with it the new day,
[6:08] Speaker 2: and return to headquarters. Return Hello's shake a hand wave
[6:12] Speaker 2: at somebody. Finally get to your office, and a report
[6:15] Speaker 2: on your desk, Elizabeth Price, honestly performed upon death by
[6:18] Speaker 2: poisoning poison. Consider that, then read on name of poison
[6:24] Speaker 2: not to be pronounced. Question mark neatly written in blank
[6:27] Speaker 2: opposite suicide, another opposite homicide, and in blank labeled remarks.
[6:32] Speaker 2: The key was found in missus Price's effects stamp Regent Hotel.
[6:36] Speaker 2: Go there and in a plush office off of plush lobby,
[6:39] Speaker 2: you get a plush greeting. Danny, Danny close?
[6:42] Speaker 1: How are you?
[6:43] Speaker 2: Danny?
[6:43] Speaker 8: Oh?
[6:43] Speaker 2: Shaw? What are you doing with me?
[6:45] Speaker 6: You're kidding?
[6:45] Speaker 2: You didn't hear? He didn't been whispered to you, Denny
[6:48] Speaker 2: got to be told ya, Shaw, your name hasn't been
[6:51] Speaker 2: mentioned around headquarters. Then I walked in and threw my
[6:53] Speaker 2: badge on the captain's desk. It happened, bently. What of
[6:56] Speaker 2: the way could it happened? Could it have been whispering
[6:59] Speaker 2: Danny doing here? Sean security service kid? How about that
[7:04] Speaker 2: employed by the Regent Hotel to keep the security house man?
[7:07] Speaker 2: Security service? Yeah? Do you know a woman named Elizabeth Price?
[7:12] Speaker 2: Sure checked in a couple of days ago?
[7:14] Speaker 3: What about it?
[7:15] Speaker 2: Dead? She's dead? Stumbled into headquarters early this morning since
[7:19] Speaker 2: she was lost, had a heart attack. She took a
[7:22] Speaker 2: pill out of her purse poison, A poison pill mixed
[7:24] Speaker 2: in with other pills good for or whatever. Ail. Hey,
[7:28] Speaker 2: that's dramatic, Anny. What do you know about her? A
[7:30] Speaker 2: dramatic lady from ramat I think come down from the
[7:34] Speaker 2: Rockford Coast to go dance. What are you talking about?
[7:37] Speaker 2: Come to me the other night? Want to know where
[7:39] Speaker 2: I girl could enjoy yourself in the city, A girl
[7:42] Speaker 2: forty five, I'd say, what would you say? Let's get
[7:44] Speaker 2: off at Shaw? So I give her a book courtesy
[7:47] Speaker 2: of the Region, Things to See and Do in New
[7:49] Speaker 2: York City. She tells me that's not exactly what she
[7:52] Speaker 2: had in mind what she wanted. Sure, Missus Brace, who's this?
[8:01] Speaker 2: I'll take that? Called what I said, I'll take it. Hello,
[8:06] Speaker 2: who's this? There's the police with Danny Clover. I asked
[8:09] Speaker 2: to speak to Missus Price. What's the word, chriss?
[8:12] Speaker 6: I'm her steps on, I'm Johnny Price. What's going on?
[8:14] Speaker 2: Where are you calling from Middlesex Vermont? Look what you answer?
[8:17] Speaker 2: My mother's had an accident, Johnny, get down here right away.
[8:20] Speaker 2: Action got the next train. Johnny ask at headquarters for
[8:22] Speaker 2: Danny Clover. Poor kid. I don't know he did that?
[8:29] Speaker 2: Real will? What else about Missus Price? Shaw? What else
[8:32] Speaker 2: is nothing? What else is? Yeah? There's a fact that
[8:36] Speaker 2: I ranged an appointment? Was there for the hotel? Literary
[8:39] Speaker 2: tweak you. I'll get back to you Shaw. They go
[8:59] Speaker 2: outside the go a boy, I'll get it when I
[9:01] Speaker 2: finished up. Polease, mister Miller, open up. Please? Why I
[9:08] Speaker 2: thought you were a room service friend. A little strategy
[9:11] Speaker 2: I use make them leave the mess kid outside the
[9:13] Speaker 2: door saves me scrounding in my pockets for a tip.
[9:17] Speaker 2: Well you want a peppermint? Life's every little child time.
[9:19] Speaker 2: Avoid embarrassment aloud. Tell me about it inside, mister Miller,
[9:23] Speaker 2: wherever it's joyful for you, come on here. Maybe you
[9:28] Speaker 2: hit the wrong room. Friend, I'm just a notary here
[9:30] Speaker 2: when I've got to sell you. Guys can get for
[9:32] Speaker 2: free like almost anything a hotel has. Daughter that makes
[9:36] Speaker 2: you better, look friend, I'm a boy fresh out of
[9:38] Speaker 2: law school, went night, studied hard the job placement bulletins,
[9:42] Speaker 2: bombed up with this with you, who I thought was
[9:45] Speaker 2: my lens tree. Why shouldn't you disappoint me like that
[9:48] Speaker 2: Elizabeth Price, that missus who asked me to call her
[9:54] Speaker 2: another name, You too, friend, He tagged you too. She's dead.
[10:02] Speaker 2: I that poison took a pill for her heart. It
[10:05] Speaker 2: didn't work like she thought. It's a way you study
[10:08] Speaker 2: these things in school. That's why you'll understand them. Only
[10:11] Speaker 2: you'll understand why a policeman works on the possibility of murder.
[10:15] Speaker 2: Lots of things about you boys, I understand. Friends, others
[10:18] Speaker 2: confuse me, like, what is a hungry notary got to
[10:22] Speaker 2: do with the dying of a Oh, let's call her
[10:25] Speaker 2: a guest. How come a house detective arranges appointments for
[10:28] Speaker 2: a notary with a woman like Missus Price Because a
[10:30] Speaker 2: woman like Missus Price glints said notary loitering under a
[10:34] Speaker 2: hotel pop tries to exchange glimpse of the eye arranges
[10:37] Speaker 2: a conference through a third party show at the hospital.
[10:41] Speaker 2: This makes it formal, a matter of pure, unadulterated business. Look,
[10:45] Speaker 2: let me finished that the roost. The old girl from
[10:49] Speaker 2: Vermont uses that she needs some papers fan, So you
[10:52] Speaker 2: called on her and did that. For there were papers
[10:55] Speaker 2: fans trustee on a farming from a last wheel and testament,
[10:59] Speaker 2: et cetera.
[11:00] Speaker 6: She showed me.
[11:01] Speaker 2: Only I ever got around them, bossing them with my stamp.
[11:05] Speaker 2: What stopped you, Liz? That's the name? She asked me.
[11:10] Speaker 2: That Carl is well, it says to me, let's postpone
[11:13] Speaker 2: the doll papers. Then she goes to a part of
[11:16] Speaker 2: the room where the light is more friendly on her,
[11:18] Speaker 2: runs her hand through the new upswept hairdoo, stretches a
[11:22] Speaker 2: pleat and says, any remedies for boredom, mister Millan, And
[11:26] Speaker 2: you wrote out a prescription, I started, you know. Then
[11:29] Speaker 2: she said she wanted to go someplace alone. I said,
[11:33] Speaker 2: if that's what you want, go ask the cabby at
[11:35] Speaker 2: the hotel accident. Now there is a doctor with ideas.
[11:38] Speaker 2: But whatever one of the drivers out front, so I'm
[11:41] Speaker 2: will point out the one friend give me your case.
[11:45] Speaker 2: They could help even you. Oh shut the lady you
[11:55] Speaker 2: described the very one. Where did you take her? Will
[11:57] Speaker 2: I ever forget this cap a mine has seen sights
[12:01] Speaker 2: that would chill and thrill, characters of every shape, size
[12:03] Speaker 2: and characteristic, and this lady pits of the type. Where
[12:06] Speaker 2: did the where did it go? Join on Gleenwich Village
[12:10] Speaker 2: Club Domino? She looked the type like I said, and
[12:13] Speaker 2: me still enough psychology. I know just what it.
[12:22] Speaker 4: Annoyed the customers, not one annoy them how buying drinks
[12:26] Speaker 4: for whoever.
[12:27] Speaker 2: All they wanted to do.
[12:28] Speaker 4: Is listen to the music. Buying drinks at such a
[12:31] Speaker 4: holy moment. As for the talk, the streak phase places
[12:35] Speaker 4: for drink buyers.
[12:36] Speaker 2: Years of the music sure.
[12:39] Speaker 4: We got into mission, then the cats can laugh on.
[12:42] Speaker 2: They told you to come in here to George's why
[12:52] Speaker 2: book friend, I explained to you twice already. Next time,
[12:55] Speaker 2: downtown downtown means cop, downtown means cop. Yeah, Well the
[13:00] Speaker 2: dame was here. See good spender like the merchandise a
[13:03] Speaker 2: lot ate drank you with glee. She left with Billy
[13:06] Speaker 2: Billy Who Billy Bailey sings here ballad?
[13:09] Speaker 1: You know where is he?
[13:10] Speaker 2: He ain't showed tonight, left with this woman you're telling
[13:13] Speaker 2: me about about one yesterday morning. How's he been back?
[13:16] Speaker 2: Where does Billy live?
[13:17] Speaker 9: Glad to oblige, I'll write it down.
[13:19] Speaker 2: For you, Billy Billy Bailey, Tell on it, man, nothing's
[13:40] Speaker 2: going to keep God. Sit here by the fan. You
[13:45] Speaker 2: all right, Billy? You know me? Banetta tem blid me.
[13:53] Speaker 2: I got a message for you. Man. Tell everybody it's
[13:57] Speaker 2: a happy time. It don't hurt hardly at off, Billy,
[14:03] Speaker 2: He get used to it. It don't hurt. What are
[14:06] Speaker 2: you trying to say, Billy? I'm talking about how it feels.
[14:12] Speaker 2: I have been a feeling it all day and can't
[14:15] Speaker 2: get to a phone to tell anybody how the man
[14:18] Speaker 2: walks in sticks a knife in you what I was privileged?
[14:24] Speaker 2: I saw the man with a knife. Who was it?
[14:27] Speaker 2: Tryat man, It's a kick, It's a kick. His body
[14:36] Speaker 2: twisted off the iron cot shuddered and lay still. The
[14:40] Speaker 2: cigarette he had been holding rolled out of his fingers, gleamed,
[14:42] Speaker 2: briefly kissed out in the leavings of an overturned shot glass,
[14:46] Speaker 2: and from the building across the street, the spinning electric
[14:49] Speaker 2: sign flung its colors over Billy's face, blue, red, green,
[14:55] Speaker 2: blue again, and Billy was right. There was no hurt
[14:59] Speaker 2: in him anymore. Billy was dead.
[15:13] Speaker 3: You are listening to Broadways My Beach, written by Morton
[15:16] Speaker 3: Ben and David Breakin and starring Larry Thor as Detective
[15:20] Speaker 3: Danny Clover.
[15:31] Speaker 2: No August dies in September. He's jumped a few calendar
[15:34] Speaker 2: spaces for the right. Broadway keeps on dancing. Nothing seasonal
[15:39] Speaker 2: on Broadway. It's the street that blinks color and riot
[15:42] Speaker 2: and night sounds mottled gold, and the spectacular that drips
[15:46] Speaker 2: over the pavements. Walk it, laugh at it, bloody, your
[15:49] Speaker 2: hands against it. Your name is written on gutterwater. Nobody
[15:53] Speaker 2: knows you're there, even when there's pile death Broadway mourns
[16:01] Speaker 2: with a shrug. The cold whisper of it is the
[16:04] Speaker 2: flipping of a million newspaper pages. An aggregate call him
[16:06] Speaker 2: to page three death a village singer linked with poisoning
[16:10] Speaker 2: a Vermont woman named Elizabeth Price. What else can you
[16:13] Speaker 2: do but shrug? If you're a policeman assigned to the case.
[16:17] Speaker 2: If a boy from Vermont has just seen his stepmother
[16:19] Speaker 2: in the morgue, if he has leaned against you and
[16:22] Speaker 2: you've seen his tears, there are things you can do.
[16:25] Speaker 2: Wait for him, offer him silences and sometimes talk, walk
[16:30] Speaker 2: with him, sit beside him. Mostly it's a matter of
[16:33] Speaker 2: waiting for him. I'm glad you broke me out here
[16:36] Speaker 2: to the park, mister Kober feeling better, Johnny, I guess
[16:40] Speaker 2: you want to talk about what whatever you want? But
[16:45] Speaker 2: you got your stepmother.
[16:48] Speaker 6: There's nothing, Okay, there's a lot, there always is. A
[16:57] Speaker 6: boy grows up to be seventeen. It's a long time,
[17:02] Speaker 6: Is that much to tell? We've got as long as
[17:04] Speaker 6: you want.
[17:06] Speaker 2: A boy grows up on.
[17:07] Speaker 6: A farm in Vermont, his mother dies when he's born,
[17:13] Speaker 6: going to school, being in love with your fourth grade teacher,
[17:17] Speaker 6: and sleigh riding snow and crops, watching your father marry
[17:23] Speaker 6: again and die. How old were you when your father
[17:26] Speaker 6: died last year? I was sixteen. My father was There
[17:32] Speaker 6: was never anyone like my father. I just want to
[17:36] Speaker 6: be like him, That's all.
[17:37] Speaker 1: Now.
[17:38] Speaker 2: I wish I alll me what to say to you,
[17:39] Speaker 2: But it's happened before that. Other people who cares.
[17:43] Speaker 6: I'm not other people.
[17:44] Speaker 2: I'm me sure.
[17:46] Speaker 6: I guess no one thinks of seventeen year olds as
[17:49] Speaker 6: being orphans. Orphan is being very young and not having parents.
[17:54] Speaker 6: I wasn't even supposed to cry, was I at seventeen?
[17:59] Speaker 2: I'm sad of those.
[18:02] Speaker 6: I want Elizabeth back ridiculous, huh, not being mature? How
[18:10] Speaker 6: else am I going to say it? I want her back.
[18:12] Speaker 2: Let's go across the street, Johnny.
[18:14] Speaker 6: We can have something just happening to me or alone,
[18:18] Speaker 6: nobody nothing dead words like that happened to me? What
[18:26] Speaker 6: am I gonna do?
[18:27] Speaker 2: Right?
[18:29] Speaker 1: What am I supposed to do?
[18:31] Speaker 7: I don't.
[18:34] Speaker 2: Right, Johnny, come back here. A sudden mushrooming of shock
[18:40] Speaker 2: has him shaveled a wooman thrown against the windshield, lost
[18:43] Speaker 2: in the shriek of breaks, lost in the thrill, insistent
[18:45] Speaker 2: policeman's whistled found again in the thilts of the crowd
[18:49] Speaker 2: sunned face. This drench to the color of the sun
[18:51] Speaker 2: warmed them with an instant before and the quality of
[18:54] Speaker 2: half silence. As I dragged the boy from the streets,
[18:57] Speaker 2: a sudden imposed silence to let the begging cry be heard.
[19:04] Speaker 2: Leave the boy back of the curb, hold his protecting
[19:06] Speaker 2: strength against you. Motion the policeman to hold him back.
[19:09] Speaker 2: Keep the crowd back as you leave the boy in
[19:11] Speaker 2: the squad car, take him away from the place where
[19:14] Speaker 2: he wanted his diet, and at headquarters, wait for the
[19:22] Speaker 2: man into whose gentleness you've so many times given the
[19:25] Speaker 2: care of the stricken. Wait for him. Watch the door
[19:28] Speaker 2: open slowly, tentatively, listen to the quiet voice say what
[19:32] Speaker 2: it has said so many times before. It'll be all right, Danny.
[19:36] Speaker 6: Just don't look like that. I tell you, it'll be
[19:38] Speaker 6: all right.
[19:39] Speaker 2: He's a kid, doctor Sensky. I had to tell him.
[19:41] Speaker 2: I I had a shower to him on a marble slab.
[19:44] Speaker 9: He's a strong boy, Danny.
[19:46] Speaker 2: He'll walk out of here in three hours, strong, young.
[19:49] Speaker 2: I gave him a sedative.
[19:51] Speaker 9: Together, all these things will take away this much grief
[19:54] Speaker 9: from him.
[19:54] Speaker 2: A pinch. You happy in your work, doctor, both of us? Danny, Yeah, yeah,
[20:03] Speaker 2: take us to the thanks.
[20:10] Speaker 9: Why do we talk about Danny. There's humidity to talk about.
[20:14] Speaker 9: There's Corney Island on a hot day.
[20:16] Speaker 2: There's what I've been checking on. Billy Bailey. He was
[20:22] Speaker 2: well thought of. No one wanted him dead, no one.
[20:24] Speaker 9: I talked to the violin his death sorrow conversation that
[20:28] Speaker 9: never stops his flow between us and Danny.
[20:30] Speaker 2: Elizabeth Price killed by a capsule that was meant to
[20:33] Speaker 2: wait to kill Danny. To take a little box of
[20:36] Speaker 2: pills that were meant to give relief from pain.
[20:39] Speaker 9: Put among them a few poisonous pills.
[20:42] Speaker 2: Then when they Yeah, Danny Plover speaking Henry Shaw. Danny,
[20:47] Speaker 2: get on here, Security services, the regional hotel has got
[20:50] Speaker 2: goodies for you over the phone. Haven't got time, Danny,
[20:52] Speaker 2: be good to me. Get here quick. You're going on, Danny. Yeah,
[20:57] Speaker 2: let's have another nice talk sometime a doctor. I had
[21:16] Speaker 2: a man on the shoulder, Danny clasp his palm because
[21:18] Speaker 2: I turned a new leaf and hardly show. I tell
[21:21] Speaker 2: you you hurt me down here to tell me you
[21:23] Speaker 2: found salvation. You can give it to me, Danny, and
[21:25] Speaker 2: return for the good thing I got for you last
[21:28] Speaker 2: time I saw you, last time you saw me in
[21:30] Speaker 2: my back first stood on edge because you were still
[21:32] Speaker 2: on the force. You not me get through a shaw.
[21:35] Speaker 2: It's an apology, Danny. You got to know one when
[21:37] Speaker 2: you meet one. We can't be friends. We can't get
[21:40] Speaker 2: together on this thing about how missus Price had a
[21:42] Speaker 2: visitor the first night she guessed it at our hotel.
[21:45] Speaker 2: A guy, a man carried boging shoulders right toward doorstep
[21:50] Speaker 2: comes late, saw this bright day. I beat it out
[21:53] Speaker 2: of the night play because I wanted to make a
[21:55] Speaker 2: good impression around on you or my friends in the force,
[21:59] Speaker 2: because it wasn't night. Clerk didn't ask her name, don't
[22:03] Speaker 2: remember the face, just the broad shoulders saying which way
[22:06] Speaker 2: to missus Bryce, please, I want to talk to him,
[22:08] Speaker 2: the clerk. Don't buy your time, Danny. I went over
[22:12] Speaker 2: him good, left them holding the cold compress. So anything
[22:15] Speaker 2: he's got to say, he's already told me. And I
[22:17] Speaker 2: tell you real goodie about the late visiting. Not much, ye,
[22:23] Speaker 2: we'll check up. WI leave anything else out show. I
[22:25] Speaker 2: knew it would register. You got a fine brain, Danny.
[22:28] Speaker 2: Then you'll tell me why you got miss Pryce's telephone call.
[22:31] Speaker 2: A woman like her, Danny, like missus Price. I worried
[22:33] Speaker 2: about her alone in this big alley ours. I worried, honestly.
[22:39] Speaker 2: That's why when I saw her go out that night
[22:42] Speaker 2: given order prefer calls to me? Are the only one
[22:45] Speaker 2: you took for him? Yeah? For the reason I told you, Danny.
[22:48] Speaker 2: Honest Danny, I thought a good thought. Did you a
[22:53] Speaker 2: good deed? Get him back in the forest? Huh? Help her?
[22:57] Speaker 2: What I can thank Shaw.
[23:12] Speaker 4: The Evening's greetings, Danny, and don't posit get up.
[23:15] Speaker 2: You know what you got.
[23:16] Speaker 4: What I've got is we of the police have been
[23:19] Speaker 4: able to ascertain nothing as to what man visited the
[23:21] Speaker 4: deceased Missus Price.
[23:23] Speaker 2: Uh huh what nothing? I just said? Uh huh.
[23:26] Speaker 4: Such interruptions are thought scattering, Danny. We will mind this
[23:30] Speaker 4: in the future, will we?
[23:31] Speaker 2: Sorry forgiven?
[23:33] Speaker 4: The second matter I wish to place at your disposal
[23:35] Speaker 4: concerns Middlesex.
[23:36] Speaker 2: What about Middle.
[23:37] Speaker 4: Danny, Middle Sex Ver month our department which concerns itself
[23:42] Speaker 4: for checking such matters check. No record of a phone
[23:44] Speaker 4: call has been found as yet of a call being
[23:47] Speaker 4: placed from middlesex Ver month to New York City. The
[23:50] Speaker 4: last snow and phone call.
[23:51] Speaker 2: From these points last June by Calvert with the little
[24:01] Speaker 2: an issue on all points. Bulletin person was wanted for
[24:04] Speaker 2: double murder a person I'd talked to. So issue his name, weight, height,
[24:09] Speaker 2: coloring all the details necessary and wait. Fidget walk down
[24:13] Speaker 2: to the corner Hamburg to stand for twenty five cent
[24:15] Speaker 2: de light with onions and coffee. Come back. Stop in communications.
[24:20] Speaker 2: After a while, behanded a slip of paper. Fugitive spotted
[24:23] Speaker 2: in Club Domino, Greenwich Village. Issue orders to stick with him.
[24:28] Speaker 2: Wait another slip of paper. Fugitive walked across the street
[24:31] Speaker 2: to Phase Place. Is being followed. Then at three in
[24:35] Speaker 2: the morning, Phase Place closes. Fugitive leaves goes to a
[24:38] Speaker 2: place one block down according to the pattern. I got
[24:41] Speaker 2: a squad car, went there. You back again, cop, he's
[24:48] Speaker 2: getting ready to close him at the corner table. I'll
[24:52] Speaker 2: sweep him out. Don't put anyone else in here, Johnny,
[24:58] Speaker 2: I'm not drinking, mister comer night huh.
[25:01] Speaker 6: I would have drunk if they had served me, No
[25:04] Speaker 6: one would. We've got to talk some more, Johnny, All right,
[25:09] Speaker 6: you think you can get them to give me a drink.
[25:11] Speaker 6: I want to see what's in it, Johnny. There must
[25:13] Speaker 6: be something in it.
[25:14] Speaker 2: Let's get out of here, Johnny.
[25:15] Speaker 6: If there is, why do people come here places like this?
[25:19] Speaker 2: All those places? Why did you kill Bailey? Johnny? I
[25:25] Speaker 2: followed them.
[25:27] Speaker 6: She am drunk. They were laughing. I've never heard her
[25:34] Speaker 6: laugh like that before.
[25:36] Speaker 2: That's why you killed him.
[25:39] Speaker 6: Then they stopped under a lamp push and then laughed
[25:42] Speaker 6: for a long time in a cab game. She went away,
[25:50] Speaker 6: She went away.
[25:51] Speaker 2: You followed billy.
[25:54] Speaker 6: People who lived in places like that, like the womb
[25:58] Speaker 6: he lived in. Jerk knocked on the door and he
[26:05] Speaker 6: let me in. I told him who I was. He laughed,
[26:10] Speaker 6: he was drunk, and then you stabbed him. Oh all
[26:15] Speaker 6: right away we talked. I wanted to see what kind
[26:20] Speaker 6: of a man he was. You want to hear something funny?
[26:24] Speaker 6: What I liked him?
[26:27] Speaker 2: I had to fight it. I didn't want to like him.
[26:31] Speaker 6: He came over and touched me on the shoulder. That's
[26:36] Speaker 6: when I was standing.
[26:38] Speaker 2: Come on, Johnny, let's walk okay, Hi, Georgie, Yeah, squad
[26:50] Speaker 2: cars over there, let's stand here. Master. I still don't
[26:55] Speaker 2: see what she wanted all this for none of the
[26:58] Speaker 2: things she did with very Johnny. You know that, don't you.
[27:02] Speaker 2: The poison tablets in your stepmother's medicine. Eventually she would
[27:05] Speaker 2: take one of them, but you didn't know when, You
[27:07] Speaker 2: didn't know when she was going to die. Then the
[27:10] Speaker 2: fake called from Vermont.
[27:12] Speaker 6: You know, I thought that was clever. Long distance call
[27:15] Speaker 6: station to station. The operator never tells the other party
[27:18] Speaker 6: where the carls coming from.
[27:19] Speaker 2: You put right through. You were here all the time
[27:21] Speaker 2: your stepmother was here. When she followed her, or wherever
[27:23] Speaker 2: she went, he followed her. He went to her hotel room,
[27:26] Speaker 2: try to get her to go home.
[27:29] Speaker 6: You understand, don't you.
[27:31] Speaker 2: Your father died, you had to take care of what
[27:33] Speaker 2: was his.
[27:33] Speaker 6: My father would have done the same thing.
[27:36] Speaker 2: Your stepmother didn't do anything except look for a relief
[27:39] Speaker 2: for her. Loneliness, You should have known that you follow
[27:42] Speaker 2: your stepmother, Yes, I was. You understand that too, don't you?
[27:50] Speaker 2: In the car chum, get in, mister Clover.
[27:55] Speaker 6: This afternoon, you saved my life when I tried to
[27:58] Speaker 6: run in front of a Car's funny, isn't it now?
[28:04] Speaker 2: It bothered me before? Johnny?
[28:07] Speaker 6: You think I didn't mean to die thanks for saving
[28:13] Speaker 6: me anyhow, Get in Johnny. I like you, mister Color.
[28:19] Speaker 6: You like my father so much the way you handle me.
[28:25] Speaker 2: I like it just like my father. The knight bursts
[28:51] Speaker 2: open like a sudden flame, and the crowd swarm appears,
[28:55] Speaker 2: squeezed out from under the earth, roped up by the
[28:58] Speaker 2: silhouettes of a thousand buildings. They dance their fury away
[29:02] Speaker 2: against the time of morning, until the sky soaks up
[29:05] Speaker 2: the pain and turns it into the dawn. It's Broadway,
[29:11] Speaker 2: the gaudiest, the most violent, the lonesomest mile in the world.
[29:18] Speaker 2: Broadway My Beat.
[29:32] Speaker 10: Tonight ONPN presents You've been listening to some of the
[29:35] Speaker 10: best in radio drama with ber McGhee and Malay and
[29:38] Speaker 10: Broadway is My Beats. Join us again Monday evening at
[29:42] Speaker 10: the same time Nine Old Bought When Presents, Dragonets.
[29:47] Speaker 2: And Escape.
[31:10] Speaker 1: Welcome Back.
[31:11] Speaker 5: Well.
[31:12] Speaker 1: Another interesting episode, and the killer was going through a lot,
[31:17] Speaker 1: and I think made the point that he just really
[31:20] Speaker 1: did not have the ability to even figure out where
[31:27] Speaker 1: he was or what he was supposed to do. But
[31:29] Speaker 1: the show doesn't treat that in a way that makes
[31:32] Speaker 1: it seem as if he's not culpable or wasn't aware
[31:35] Speaker 1: of what he was doing. Honestly, I did suspect the
[31:41] Speaker 1: hotel detective just because he's the type of person I
[31:46] Speaker 1: think we might have heard as a killer with this
[31:50] Speaker 1: sort of thing in the earlier like nineteen forty nine
[31:55] Speaker 1: Broadways My Beat episodes. But what we was a guy
[31:59] Speaker 1: I think who didn't fundamentally understand why he didn't make
[32:04] Speaker 1: it as a policeman, which is why his attempts to
[32:07] Speaker 1: get Danny to be supportive and kind him rejoining the
[32:13] Speaker 1: force really came off badly. I think he's the type
[32:18] Speaker 1: of person who thinks that using force shows that he's
[32:23] Speaker 1: a tough call. But in this case, he was using
[32:28] Speaker 1: force on someone who wasn't really a threat to show
[32:34] Speaker 1: his own powerfulness, but also illustrated that he really didn't
[32:39] Speaker 1: have this person's respect and trust to get simple cooperation.
[32:46] Speaker 1: And we can really hear right from the start that
[32:50] Speaker 1: Danny does not like this guy, does not respect him,
[32:53] Speaker 1: and it's all Danny can do to keep himself at
[32:56] Speaker 1: the level of thinly veiled contempt. Well, now we turn
[33:01] Speaker 1: to listener comments and feedback, and I have an email
[33:05] Speaker 1: from Derek who writes it occurred to me today while
[33:09] Speaker 1: listening to Broadways My Beat, the different reactions we get
[33:13] Speaker 1: to murder. Dragnett is almost cold and distant, stating the case,
[33:18] Speaker 1: the results they found, and rarely the victim's family. Broadways
[33:22] Speaker 1: My Beat has over dramatized reactions by both the police
[33:27] Speaker 1: and family. Vile Ovance here's the word murder and almost
[33:31] Speaker 1: gets giddy along with the police. While I can pick
[33:37] Speaker 1: and find faults with each, the fact that they are
[33:40] Speaker 1: so different is what makes me like each program for
[33:44] Speaker 1: what it brings. Thanks for helping us remember these forgotten gems. Well,
[33:48] Speaker 1: thank you so much, Derek, and I think the way
[33:51] Speaker 1: that Death's approach tends to be a part of each
[33:55] Speaker 1: series overall tone. I mean, I guess you could put
[33:59] Speaker 1: it on a content you have on one end, Filo Vance,
[34:04] Speaker 1: which is trying to be a sort of puzzle mystery,
[34:09] Speaker 1: and Broadways My Bait with the very lyrical sort of
[34:14] Speaker 1: way of storytelling, is going to have an entirely different
[34:17] Speaker 1: reaction With Dragnet. I think it's a bit more mixed.
[34:22] Speaker 1: They can react, although it's not going to be over
[34:26] Speaker 1: the top or anything, when they encounter a killing that
[34:31] Speaker 1: particularly horrifies them. An example of this would be the
[34:37] Speaker 1: killing in the big Blast. By not having a bigger
[34:41] Speaker 1: reaction to every murder, it does a lot to preserve
[34:46] Speaker 1: the show's credibility when there is a murder that leads
[34:51] Speaker 1: to more of a reaction. Then we go to Spotify
[34:57] Speaker 1: and regarding the David Blaine case, Mechanic sixty six says, well,
[35:03] Speaker 1: that was dark. And then we also had a question
[35:08] Speaker 1: over on YouTube. This one comes from Jeffrey, and this
[35:13] Speaker 1: is on the episode the Joe Gruber murder case. Quite
[35:17] Speaker 1: the worldly, grown up acting seventeen.
[35:21] Speaker 6: Year old girl.
[35:22] Speaker 1: Girls thought of marriage so young back then. Well obviously
[35:26] Speaker 1: not every girl was exactly like this character, but she
[35:31] Speaker 1: was given a certain portrayal and characterization, which, you know,
[35:37] Speaker 1: in terms of the fact of considering marriage was not
[35:42] Speaker 1: at all uncommon. The medium age for a first marriage
[35:47] Speaker 1: for young women back in the fifties was twenty to
[35:53] Speaker 1: twenty one years old. This could particularly be common if
[35:57] Speaker 1: a young woman wasn't going to call now young men
[36:02] Speaker 1: their marriage age was a little bit higher, kind of
[36:07] Speaker 1: in line, generally about twenty two or twenty three throughout
[36:12] Speaker 1: the same period. But thanks so much, Jeffrey, I appreciate
[36:16] Speaker 1: the question. Now it's time to thank our Patreon supporter
[36:20] Speaker 1: of the day, and I want to thank Jen, Patreon
[36:24] Speaker 1: supporter since December twenty nineteen, currently supporting the podcast at
[36:28] Speaker 1: the Shawmus level of four dollars or more per month.
[36:31] Speaker 1: Thanks so much for your support, Jan And that will
[36:33] Speaker 1: do it for today. If you're enjoying the podcast, please

[36:45] Speaker 1: We will be back next Wednesday with another episode of
[36:48] Speaker 1: Broadways My Beat, but join us back here tomorrow for
[36:52] Speaker 1: dragging that.
[36:53] Speaker 7: Where I saw the old lady grabbed the little boy
[36:57] Speaker 7: pulling next tour. It's an awful thing. We trucking them
[36:59] Speaker 7: both together. It's funny the things you notice. Boy was
[37:02] Speaker 7: carrying a little box of candy. I heard this terrible
[37:05] Speaker 7: thud when the truck hit them. I looked and the
[37:07] Speaker 7: candy was spilled all over the street. Just couldn't help,
[37:09] Speaker 7: but I got sick to my stomach.
[37:11] Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am, I can understand.
[37:12] Speaker 8: How about this truck that ran them down? Do you
[37:14] Speaker 8: think you'd know it if you ever saw it again?
[37:16] Speaker 7: I'm not sure I think I might. Yes, it was
[37:18] Speaker 7: one of those delivery trucks, you know. I think you
[37:20] Speaker 7: call it a panel truck. It was a light tan
[37:22] Speaker 7: color all over, and there was black lettering on the side.
[37:25] Speaker 8: Could you make out any of the lettering at all?
[37:27] Speaker 7: Well, I think there were three or four words painted
[37:29] Speaker 7: on the side, and I know one of them was bakery.
[37:31] Speaker 7: I'm sure that.
[37:32] Speaker 2: Did you recognize what make a truck it was, ma'am?
[37:34] Speaker 2: You're the model?
[37:35] Speaker 7: It was a late model, I'm pretty sure of that,
[37:36] Speaker 7: either a Chevrolet or Ford. I'd say one of those
[37:39] Speaker 7: regular delivery trucks like some bakery's hues.
[37:41] Speaker 2: Sure about that word?
[37:42] Speaker 7: You saw letter on the side, It said bakery, Yes,
[37:44] Speaker 7: I'm positive with that. Know anything else.
[37:46] Speaker 8: Out of the ordinary that you might have noticed about
[37:47] Speaker 8: the truck, ma'am, Anything outstanding that might have caught your eye?
[37:50] Speaker 7: No, I'm sorry. So that's about all I can tell you.
[37:53] Speaker 7: How is the old lady? Do you know? And a
[37:54] Speaker 7: little boy? Could they tell you anything?
[37:56] Speaker 2: Yes, ma'am.
[37:56] Speaker 8: The woman's dead. She was killed instantly. They've taken the
[37:59] Speaker 8: youngster over to join the street receiving hospital. Afraid he's
[38:02] Speaker 8: in pretty bad shape too.
[38:03] Speaker 7: Terrible shame, poor lady. She lives right here in the neighborhood,
[38:06] Speaker 7: you know, seeing her shopping in the market next door
[38:08] Speaker 7: here Saturday afternoon. It's just tragic. Boys or grandson.
[38:12] Speaker 2: You know.
[38:13] Speaker 7: Somebody said he was down visiting her for the Christmas vacation.
[38:15] Speaker 7: Seemed like a nice kid, well behaved. She seems so
[38:18] Speaker 7: proud of him. It suld be a sad Christmas for
[38:20] Speaker 7: the family.
[38:22] Speaker 2: Just one more question, man, When the boy and his
[38:23] Speaker 2: grandmother were crossing the street, would you say the visibility
[38:26] Speaker 2: was good?
[38:26] Speaker 7: I mean, is there any reason why it would have
[38:28] Speaker 7: been hard for a driver to see them? No reason
[38:30] Speaker 7: in the world, officer. It's a clear night. You can
[38:32] Speaker 7: see how well the intersections lighted up, all the Christmas
[38:34] Speaker 7: lights strung up along here. The lights from the theater
[38:37] Speaker 7: Marquee was just as well lighted then as it is now.
[38:40] Speaker 7: I see, the intersection was perfectly clear, no other cars around.
[38:43] Speaker 7: The boy had a white sweater on. The old lady
[38:45] Speaker 7: was wearing a light colored certainly easy to see the
[38:48] Speaker 7: traffic light too, It said, stop, I can't understand why
[38:51] Speaker 7: that driver didn't see him.
[38:53] Speaker 2: Neither can Wait, how.
[38:53] Speaker 7: Could anybody do such a thing? Just isn't any excuse
[38:56] Speaker 7: for it? No excuse in the world. It's downright murdered.
[38:59] Speaker 2: Maybe that plains it. That's why I keep going.
[39:02] Speaker 1: I hope you'll be with us then. In the meantime,
