[2:24] Speaker 2: at home and abroad, and to secure for every American
[2:28] Speaker 2: the rights which are his under our constitution.
[2:38] Speaker 4: Send mister Butler in now, please, mister Tiffin. That's why,
[2:44] Speaker 4: mister Butler, come right in. Sit down. Thank you. I
[2:47] Speaker 4: don't mind telling you that your phone call earlier this
[2:49] Speaker 4: morning aroused a great deal of curiosity. I'm glad to
[2:51] Speaker 4: hear that, mister Tiffin. It should make things easier for me.
[2:54] Speaker 4: Tell you, mister Butler, why did you come all the
[2:56] Speaker 4: way to Kelby, Pennsylvania. Why did you choose the Kelby
[2:59] Speaker 4: National Bank? Must be a score of other banks closer
[3:01] Speaker 4: to Hollywood which would serve you a purpose or we
[3:03] Speaker 4: could have picked any number of banks, mister Tiffin, but
[3:05] Speaker 4: none would be as authentic for this particular scene we
[3:08] Speaker 4: wanted to film. There's quite a trend, you know, and
[3:11] Speaker 4: making the so called documentary type of picture a real
[3:14] Speaker 4: people in real location. Yes, missus, Tiffan and I have
[3:17] Speaker 4: seen several pictures like that. Well, then you know the
[3:19] Speaker 4: realism we're looking for. We're filming the life of pretty
[3:23] Speaker 4: boy loved and oh yes, I've all his hold ups.
[3:26] Speaker 4: One of the most spectacular took place right here. I'll
[3:29] Speaker 4: never forget that day. I was standing near the telescades
[3:31] Speaker 4: when it happened. That's exactly what we want to show
[3:34] Speaker 4: you and the regular personalities bank me Asker Tiffin in
[3:38] Speaker 4: a moving picture, why not could anyone else act the
[3:41] Speaker 4: parts of realistically? What would this entail on the bank's part?
[3:44] Speaker 4: And when would you like to do it?
[3:45] Speaker 3: Not?
[3:45] Speaker 4: The most to are interruption in your normal routine? Oh
[3:48] Speaker 4: is that all? That's all? We'll shoot the scene without
[3:51] Speaker 4: sound so that any extraneous noises wanted to rob the shooting,
[3:55] Speaker 4: and we'll put the sound on film later. As for
[3:57] Speaker 4: when we'd like to do it, the sooner the better,
[4:00] Speaker 4: morning if possible tomorrow. Yes, I've got my crew standing by,
[4:03] Speaker 4: and time is money in any business, mister Tiffin. Oh yes, sir,
[4:07] Speaker 4: wish other businesses would learn that. Of course, tomorrow's Friday,
[4:10] Speaker 4: and I imagine with payrolls and everything. Well, that's not
[4:12] Speaker 4: a problem, particularly if it will only take two hours.
[4:14] Speaker 4: Our bank is organized efficiently enough to handle its business
[4:17] Speaker 4: even with a little interruption, then tomorrow will be all right. Yes,
[4:19] Speaker 4: mister Butler, if you can finish before eleven thirty, perhaps
[4:23] Speaker 4: even before that. I see, will there be any stars
[4:27] Speaker 4: in this scene? No, I'm sorry, we're using doubles. These
[4:31] Speaker 4: will be long shots. We'll take close ups to the
[4:33] Speaker 4: stars back in Hollywood. I see just one thing more.
[4:37] Speaker 4: I want to arrange for a police guard to keep
[4:39] Speaker 4: curiosity seekers out of camera range. Oh yes, of course, certainly.
[4:43] Speaker 4: You see the mayor. He'll take care of you. In fact,
[4:45] Speaker 4: I'll phone him and tell him you're coming. Oh, thank you,
[4:47] Speaker 4: mister Tiffin. That'll be a big help. Good day, sir,
[4:50] Speaker 4: glad to do it. Goodbye, I mean, I mean lodgeant Lynn. Yep,
[5:07] Speaker 4: I'm mister Butler.
[5:08] Speaker 5: Oh you're the fellow who's gonna turn Kelby Pie into Hollywood.
[5:11] Speaker 4: Caw, what care little joke and the abbreviation yeah. Well
[5:18] Speaker 4: side all about it.
[5:19] Speaker 5: Commissioner called and said, the mayor said to give you
[5:21] Speaker 5: all the cooperation of the world. Well, I can't do that,
[5:24] Speaker 5: but I can give you all the cooperation in KELBYPA.
[5:27] Speaker 4: That will be sufficient. Sergeant, Now what I will got them?
[5:30] Speaker 5: Give you the best men on the force nine thirty
[5:32] Speaker 5: tomorrow morning. Commissioner said that right.
[5:34] Speaker 4: Yes it is. We're gonna need some folks inside the bank,
[5:37] Speaker 4: aren't you. Well, that'll be.
[5:39] Speaker 5: My wife, Agar there's a regular depositor there. She'd be
[5:42] Speaker 5: glad to help you out. Always hankering after movies anyhow,
[5:45] Speaker 5: be true to life.
[5:46] Speaker 4: Two sticks every said, I'm making there. I'll be happy
[5:49] Speaker 4: to have your wife and the picture. Sergeant, what time
[5:51] Speaker 4: you want her to be there at the same time
[5:52] Speaker 4: you come with the police? Right, nine thirty it is.
[5:55] Speaker 4: I'd better call her and tell her all about it.
[5:56] Speaker 5: Give her a chance to primp up some You know
[5:58] Speaker 5: how a woman is about those things.
[6:00] Speaker 4: I understand see you tomorrow morning.
[6:02] Speaker 5: Then Taja right here, mister butler, A're going to start
[6:16] Speaker 5: shooting in a few minutes, gotcha, Everything's all set out here.
[6:19] Speaker 5: Got officers at both ends to the block to Girton traffic.
[6:22] Speaker 5: These men you will hold back pedestrian.
[6:24] Speaker 4: Good, good, Now, I'll give you a picture of what's
[6:26] Speaker 4: going to happen so that none of your men can
[6:27] Speaker 4: get into a camera range. I'm listening, mister Butler. How's
[6:31] Speaker 4: haagathare doing? Agatha? Oh bye and excellent, Just the type
[6:35] Speaker 4: we need for the picture. Yeah. Now, you know we're
[6:38] Speaker 4: shooting a silent yeah, but there still may be plenty
[6:40] Speaker 4: of sound made people yelling, gun shooting, and perhaps even
[6:43] Speaker 4: the burglar alarm will be set off. I want to
[6:46] Speaker 4: murror the sound of the excitement and the faces of
[6:48] Speaker 4: the people in the picture. Gotcha, mister Butler. Now, first,
[6:52] Speaker 4: after the robbery, I'll back out of the door there.
[6:55] Speaker 4: Then the two camera men will come after me and
[6:57] Speaker 4: we'll all get in the first car. Right then, mister
[7:00] Speaker 4: Black and miss Smith will come out with drawn guns
[7:02] Speaker 4: and get into the second car. Argee. We'll both speed off,
[7:04] Speaker 4: and as soon as we've turned the corner, you can
[7:06] Speaker 4: let things go back to normal, unless, of course, we
[7:09] Speaker 4: need another take. It's all straight. One thing more. Mister
[7:14] Speaker 4: Tiffan and some of the bank employees will come out
[7:16] Speaker 4: shouting hell robbery police. Don't get between them and the camera.
[7:20] Speaker 4: I want some shots of that. You're worried. Now that
[7:22] Speaker 4: that's straight, I guess we'd better get started, see us sugeant. Well,
[7:34] Speaker 4: mister Tiffan, you already well, yes, yes, but I haven't
[7:37] Speaker 4: met oh, of course, mister Black, Mister Oscar Tiffan, president

[8:17] Speaker 4: all right, let them roll go to work. Mister Black. Okay, everybody,
[8:23] Speaker 4: this is a stick up a little more frightened. Please
[8:25] Speaker 4: take your hands at your side, stand still, and nobody
[8:27] Speaker 4: will get hurt. Ah, that's that's the way. Baby. Yet
[8:30] Speaker 4: the cages clean out to every son of it? Right, good, good,
[8:33] Speaker 4: be awestricken, mister Tippins, Come on, baby, step on, don't
[8:36] Speaker 4: really touch the money. You'll miss shut up, you'll hurt
[8:38] Speaker 4: the man, mister tif And I'll tell you a secret.
[8:40] Speaker 4: That gun hasn't got blanks, it's got real bullets. You see,
[8:43] Speaker 4: this picture is going to be the last word in realism.
[8:46] Speaker 4: We're rubbing your bank or keep what You'll notice the
[8:49] Speaker 4: camera man have guns. Also, I'm there loaded too. How
[8:53] Speaker 4: you doing, baby? You can't do this? Why not call
[8:56] Speaker 4: for the police then they're expecting it, or you could

[10:02] Speaker 5: He export, mister Tiffer, you want to make acting you're Brits.
[10:05] Speaker 4: Actually let us know acting, you blockhead. They really held

[11:09] Speaker 4: still have over one hundred and fifty grand. We're heading
[11:11] Speaker 4: for New York. I won't be happy until we're there.
[11:14] Speaker 4: I don't like it at the stick. How much you
[11:15] Speaker 4: pay those guys money? Ten thousands of feet to the

[12:39] Speaker 2: In a moment, I wish there were some way you

[12:44] Speaker 2: got in my hand, because if you could actually see

[12:51] Speaker 2: value it is. It's guaranteed to compare with knives costing
[12:55] Speaker 2: seventy five cents to one dollar. Because of a new
[12:58] Speaker 2: secret process, we've been able to have this knife hollow ground,
[13:01] Speaker 2: and that's a feature usually found only in knives costing

[13:09] Speaker 2: these knives for only a quarter with two wrappers from
[13:12] Speaker 2: delicious Old Nake or better honey candy bars. Missus Clarendon,
[13:16] Speaker 2: will you describe this knife.
[13:17] Speaker 3: For our listeners, As you homemakers probably know, a slicing
[13:20] Speaker 3: knife is long and slim adaptable for U. Seither is
[13:23] Speaker 3: a butcher knife or as a carving knife. Our stain
[13:26] Speaker 3: of steel slicing knife is nearly thirteen inches long. Because
[13:30] Speaker 3: it's stain thess steel, it's easy to clean, it keeps
[13:33] Speaker 3: its silvery luster for a lifetime. Our slicing knife is
[13:36] Speaker 3: hollow ground, which means it has an extra keen cutting
[13:40] Speaker 3: edge like a fine carving knife. The handle is polished
[13:43] Speaker 3: blonde hard wood, designed to fit your hand smoothly and
[13:46] Speaker 3: comfortably with a non slip grip. I know you'll find

[14:44] Speaker 4: Now back to our old Nick.
[14:46] Speaker 2: David Harding Cowder spy cakes.
[14:55] Speaker 4: I don't think I'll ever be able to leave this down,
[14:56] Speaker 4: mister Harding, not heavy now, mister Tiffin, don't be too
[14:59] Speaker 4: hard on yourself. He'd taken in by such a fantastic
[15:01] Speaker 4: spell or less fantastic scheme probably wouldn't have been successful.
[15:04] Speaker 4: You've read our pranksters of open street excavations or imposters
[15:08] Speaker 4: have posed as foreign diplomats. As a matter of fact,
[15:10] Speaker 4: we have records telling how moving vans have been backed
[15:12] Speaker 4: right up to close down homes and the contents just
[15:15] Speaker 4: taken away, all in broad daylight, with no attempt a secret.
[15:18] Speaker 4: And I certainly had a bold plan this time. As
[15:20] Speaker 4: to hiding, we had very boldness. Did half of the
[15:21] Speaker 4: criminals work for them? I'm not sure that I wouldn't
[15:24] Speaker 4: have been taken in by this scheme myself. I wired
[15:26] Speaker 4: to the address this butler gave me and got like
[15:27] Speaker 4: a very impressive answer, Well, I'm having had address check now,
[15:30] Speaker 4: probably it's just a mail drop. The whole thing is
[15:32] Speaker 4: so incredible. I'll try to calm down. Different. See if
[15:35] Speaker 4: you can describe the people involved. This man Butler, You
[15:39] Speaker 4: remember what he looked like. I'll never forget. Let's have
[15:42] Speaker 4: the description then. It was five feet nine or ten,
[15:44] Speaker 4: blue eyes, bald headed, pale complexion, had little red mustache,
[15:48] Speaker 4: and very smooth talker. Yes, I can imagine. What about
[15:51] Speaker 4: the other two were supposed to be actors. They both
[15:53] Speaker 4: had makeup. Art man, I can't tell you much about it,
[15:55] Speaker 4: just impressed me as a Hollywood type gangster. No woman,
[15:59] Speaker 4: now there's some I'm sure I've seen her before you have,
[16:02] Speaker 4: but I can't for the life of me remember queer
[16:04] Speaker 4: or when on a trip someplace, perhaps I just don't know,
[16:08] Speaker 4: mister Harding. Well I'll forget about it for a while.
[16:10] Speaker 4: Those things can't be forced. Now, anything else you can
[16:13] Speaker 4: think of, something can happen during or before the robbery. Oh, yes,
[16:16] Speaker 4: there was one thing that struck me a little queer.
[16:18] Speaker 4: What was that? The tough the man was supposed to be?
[16:20] Speaker 4: Pretty boy lufton? He told Butler to stop hamming that
[16:23] Speaker 4: he wasn't on a stage. Oh, he made it sound
[16:25] Speaker 4: like Butler was the actor instead of him, and he
[16:27] Speaker 4: was because he certainly fooled me and a few other people.
[16:30] Speaker 4: Thank Heaven for that. Take some of the edge off
[16:32] Speaker 4: my stupidity, or Peter, did you get anything out of
[16:34] Speaker 4: the sergeant? Nothing but volcanic eruptions? Chief, I've never seen
[16:37] Speaker 4: a man so angry. You can hardly blame me. State
[16:39] Speaker 4: troopers just called in. They found two abandoned cars about
[16:41] Speaker 4: twenty miles out of town, one of them a station wagon.
[16:44] Speaker 4: Both answered the description of the cars used in the
[16:46] Speaker 4: whole one. We better get out there. Well I've got it,
[16:48] Speaker 4: mister Harding. What the girl where I saw before? Huh?
[16:50] Speaker 4: It was in a picture an actress? Well, yes, we
[16:53] Speaker 4: had a businessman's dinner about four or five months ago,
[16:56] Speaker 4: we showed some commercial pictures. She was in one of them.
[16:58] Speaker 4: Would you know where you got them?
[17:00] Speaker 3: No?
[17:00] Speaker 4: I don't, but the secretary of our entertainment committee would know.
[17:03] Speaker 4: I'll call him and get the address. Then stay here
[17:04] Speaker 4: and doil you hear from me. I'll get in touch
[17:06] Speaker 4: with you as soon as we look over those abandoned cars.
[17:21] Speaker 4: Now they switched cars here, all right. Chief Bronson from
[17:24] Speaker 4: our laboratory says, there are impressions of three different sets
[17:27] Speaker 4: of tires. You know, there's this makeup kit that interests me.
[17:30] Speaker 4: Tiffans said, the two actors wore makeup. I don't know
[17:33] Speaker 4: much about the theater, but this looks like a professional
[17:35] Speaker 4: kid to me. New York manufacturer. We can't try tracing it. Well,
[17:40] Speaker 4: what about the car stall? Yes, the station wagon belongs
[17:42] Speaker 4: to a New York florist. Bronson scraped off that picture
[17:45] Speaker 4: Productions label on the door of the florist's name was
[17:47] Speaker 4: underneath New York. One crook tells another to stop hamming
[17:52] Speaker 4: a makeup kit. Plenty of theater in this card. The
[17:55] Speaker 4: whole idea was theatrical and it worked. Is there a
[17:58] Speaker 4: phone in this laboratory in an institute. You can call Tiffin.
[18:02] Speaker 4: I want to find out if he's got the address
[18:03] Speaker 4: of the place where his club got those films. Now, operator,
[18:16] Speaker 4: this is herding Encountress by Amobile Union. Please connect me
[18:19] Speaker 4: with mister Tiffin at the Bank of Kelby one. Thank you.
[18:23] Speaker 4: That's the funny thing. When pretty boy loved and held
[18:25] Speaker 4: up the bank at Kelby, he got just about the
[18:27] Speaker 4: same amount of money to kim longer to do the
[18:29] Speaker 4: job though. Hello, these modern crooks with their new equipment.
[18:31] Speaker 4: Oh hello, mister Tiffan, this is Harding. Oh yes, sir,
[18:34] Speaker 4: I got that address? Good? May I have it called
[18:36] Speaker 4: Genoa fifteen thirty two North Broadway, New York. Everything's in
[18:40] Speaker 4: New York before it does, will remedy that, mister Tiffan. Yes,
[18:44] Speaker 4: can you take time off from the bank for a
[18:46] Speaker 4: trip to New York. David will help solve this, certainly.
[18:49] Speaker 4: I hope it will pack some clothes. You may be
[18:51] Speaker 4: a day or two now, mister Peter's now pick you
[18:52] Speaker 4: up on our way in. We'll go right out to
[18:54] Speaker 4: the airport. Flight two from Boston arriving on runway three
[19:12] Speaker 4: Wayne for Chicago will be delayed ten minutes. You counterspies
[19:20] Speaker 4: word class. Mister Harding. I never dreamed that bit a
[19:22] Speaker 4: Laguard airport. This evening speeds half a battle against crime.
[19:24] Speaker 4: Mister Tiffans, Have you got everything straight? Peter, yes, tid
[19:28] Speaker 4: I checked the manufacture of the makeup kit, and then
[19:30] Speaker 4: drop in on Geno one and look through his film
[19:31] Speaker 4: catalog for the girl right, and keep in touch with
[19:33] Speaker 4: you through Brewster of Theatrical Weekly. Fran Can we're going
[19:36] Speaker 4: to see him, mister Harding. Yes, he's one of the editors.
[19:38] Speaker 4: Theatrical Weekly probably has more pictures of actors on file
[19:41] Speaker 4: in any other place. I've asked Brewster to search through
[19:44] Speaker 4: those files and pick out every actor's picture that fits
[19:46] Speaker 4: the description you gave it. You'll have a thousand of
[19:48] Speaker 4: them to look at. At least I'm willing and able,
[19:50] Speaker 4: mister Harding. I hope you feel the same way at
[19:52] Speaker 4: the end of the night. All right, Peter, get going,
[19:54] Speaker 4: I'll hear from me my phone. Here you are, mister Harning.
[20:06] Speaker 5: Eight one hundred and twenty seven pictures of actors thirty
[20:09] Speaker 5: to thirty five years old, five feet eight to five
[20:12] Speaker 5: feet eleven inches tall, including elevator shoes.
[20:15] Speaker 4: Or miss Brewster, I said, bald.
[20:17] Speaker 5: Also, you don't know actors, mister Harding. There are no
[20:20] Speaker 5: bald ones between thirty and thirty five.
[20:22] Speaker 4: They all wear two pays.
[20:24] Speaker 5: Particularly when they have their pictures taken.
[20:26] Speaker 4: More dear, I know, mister Tiffans. Do you think you
[20:29] Speaker 4: could detect some resemblance even if he is wearing it
[20:31] Speaker 4: to pay? It's possible. I'll you what you lay aside.
[20:34] Speaker 4: Any picture that looks even finger like this man Butler,
[20:37] Speaker 4: then I'll have all those retouched and you can go
[20:38] Speaker 4: over them again. Well, I'll try, mister Harding. Mister Brewster,
[20:42] Speaker 4: if you got any spot where mister Tivan might look
[20:43] Speaker 4: at these pictures undisturbed.
[20:44] Speaker 5: Next office, we will carry the pictures.
[20:53] Speaker 4: Just put them on that desk and pull up a chair.
[20:56] Speaker 4: Thank you. I'll take all the time you want, mister Tiffan,
[21:00] Speaker 4: don't overlook a single picture he might fit. I'll do
[21:02] Speaker 4: my best, mister Harding.
[21:06] Speaker 5: Tell me, mister Harding, do you really think an actor
[21:08] Speaker 5: engineered this job?
[21:09] Speaker 4: Well, the circumstances all point to it. Then you're in luck.
[21:12] Speaker 4: What do you mean he'll pull some boner trip himself
[21:15] Speaker 4: up somehow, and he hasn't so far. The whole scheme
[21:17] Speaker 4: have been pretty clever. He's played his part beautifully. That's
[21:20] Speaker 4: the trouble with actors. They let a good part blind
[21:22] Speaker 4: them to a bad play. He'll mess up the end
[21:24] Speaker 4: some way. Whoever he is, You don't think he'll be
[21:26] Speaker 4: very fond of actors.
[21:28] Speaker 3: Me.
[21:28] Speaker 4: I love them, adore them.
[21:29] Speaker 5: They're the most charming children in the world. But spare
[21:33] Speaker 5: me from their thinking.
[21:34] Speaker 4: Go on, I could use a little insight into the
[21:36] Speaker 4: psychology of an actor. Well, I have the greatest respect
[21:39] Speaker 4: in the world for them as actors as anything else.
[21:42] Speaker 1: No.
[21:43] Speaker 4: In fact, they should be quick frozen. What yeah, like meat.
[21:47] Speaker 4: You put them in a pot, let them play it.
[21:48] Speaker 4: Then when it's over, you put them in a quick
[21:50] Speaker 4: freezer until another part comes along. This way you don't
[21:53] Speaker 4: have to.
[21:54] Speaker 5: Pay them or feed them, and all they have to
[21:56] Speaker 5: do is act, which is all they want to do. Anyway,
[21:58] Speaker 5: is screwball. It's a novel idea at least, Yes, sir,
[22:02] Speaker 5: actors should be quick. Probably the car you were expecting,
[22:05] Speaker 5: mister Hunting, you.
[22:06] Speaker 4: Take it all thinking, hello, mister Harding, speaking Peter cheap.
[22:10] Speaker 4: You got something, yes, but I don't believe it what
[22:13] Speaker 4: it just doesn't happen this way? Are you talking about it?
[22:15] Speaker 4: The makeup kid? Turn up anything? Makeup kid? Who cares
[22:18] Speaker 4: for that?
[22:18] Speaker 1: Chief?
[22:19] Speaker 4: I'm calling it from the office of Carl Jenowa. You
[22:21] Speaker 4: knew the girl. The girl look cheap. Now I have
[22:23] Speaker 4: not been drinking.
[22:24] Speaker 1: Get that clear.
[22:25] Speaker 4: It makes some sense, Peter, I.
[22:27] Speaker 5: Can't because I just walked in as Genera finished processing
[22:30] Speaker 5: a moving picture of the whole up.
[22:32] Speaker 4: What that's right? They really took pictures? Oh now, I
[22:36] Speaker 4: said the same thing, cheap, and I'm holding the film
[22:37] Speaker 4: in my hand. How could anybody be so stupid? You
[22:41] Speaker 4: stay there, I'll be over right away. Don't worry. I
[22:43] Speaker 4: couldn't move now, goodbye, goodbye. Something happened, mister Hornting. They
[22:48] Speaker 4: actually took pictures of a hold up. See I knew it.
[22:51] Speaker 4: I knew he'd pull a Bonne out. So stupid.
[22:53] Speaker 5: How can anybody's psychology, mister Harting, It's not stupidity, it's vanity.
[22:57] Speaker 5: There isn't a ham in the world would pass up
[22:59] Speaker 5: a chance to look.
[23:00] Speaker 4: At himself acting. Yeah, well, that's one picture I am
[23:03] Speaker 4: going to see right now. All right, Genera, you're going
[23:12] Speaker 4: to tell us where the man who brought you this
[23:14] Speaker 4: picture lives. I don't know where he lives. Me to hobtie.
[23:16] Speaker 4: You just print films for anyone. He was sent by God,
[23:19] Speaker 4: I know Dully Norton. Of course you had no idea
[23:21] Speaker 4: that there was a bank robbery on the film. No, look,
[23:24] Speaker 4: I got nothing to do with bank robbers. I've got
[23:25] Speaker 4: my own business. I'm sure you have. What kind is
[23:27] Speaker 4: it that gives the crook such confidence in you less
[23:29] Speaker 4: my failure? You want to ask me, You've got to
[23:31] Speaker 4: prove something at the moment, I am not interested in
[23:33] Speaker 4: the films you're peddling. I'm interested in this man. Why
[23:35] Speaker 4: don't you take the picture, make blow ups, you can
[23:37] Speaker 4: put his face and never pushed off in the country.
[23:38] Speaker 4: That's the hard way. You're going to help us do
[23:40] Speaker 4: it the easy way. I don't want to get any
[23:42] Speaker 4: more mixed up in this than I am already. Think
[23:44] Speaker 4: you have a choice. You're going to give the picture
[23:46] Speaker 4: to the man who brought it in, just to make
[23:48] Speaker 4: sure you don't get cute. Peters is going to stay
[23:50] Speaker 4: here with you. I'll be outside Peters. If anybody picks
[23:53] Speaker 4: up that film, we tell him right, But I don't
[23:55] Speaker 4: know when he's coming. Who knows how long you'll have
[23:56] Speaker 4: to wait? That's all right, Genna. We've got plenty of time.
[23:59] Speaker 4: If you don't cooperate with us, you will get plenty
[24:01] Speaker 4: of time too. All right, Dolly, what is it? What's
[24:14] Speaker 4: the idea of this meeting? It's a surprise? God, what
[24:18] Speaker 4: kind of a surprise?
[24:19] Speaker 3: Wait till Marty.
[24:20] Speaker 4: Gets to that ham? So did we have finished with
[24:23] Speaker 4: him the minute the job was over?
[24:24] Speaker 3: There?
[24:24] Speaker 2: Now?
[24:25] Speaker 4: God, she got a ben It was a good idea.
[24:26] Speaker 4: Look all the dough we mad? I don't care. Ever
[24:29] Speaker 4: since we tied in with him, I've been unhappy the
[24:32] Speaker 4: way he thinks it comes at you from left field.
[24:35] Speaker 3: Nevertheless, we still got a lot of dough.
[24:37] Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, and I'd rather do a straight stick up
[24:39] Speaker 4: for less cash. That's where it's gonna be from now on.
[24:44] Speaker 4: Now what's this surprise? Well, come on, come on, Dolly,
[24:49] Speaker 4: don't be cute. All right? We got pictures of the job.
[24:55] Speaker 4: What there was film in the camera? Are you crazy?
[25:00] Speaker 4: Nobody'll see him? But I, oh no, you can't be
[25:03] Speaker 4: on the level your kidding, aren't you really? What did
[25:08] Speaker 4: Marty do? Take him down to the corner drug store
[25:10] Speaker 4: to be developed? Of course not. I told him about Jenna,
[25:13] Speaker 4: what he did, the job from him. It's another guy,
[25:15] Speaker 4: you know, Oh, you.
[25:17] Speaker 3: Know general he can't see anything to anybody about anything.
[25:19] Speaker 4: That was what I got on him. Did you know
[25:21] Speaker 4: that he was gonna do this? Dolly? Oh he told
[25:23] Speaker 4: me let him in. Hello, Dolly, I got I told
[25:31] Speaker 4: I thought he'd want to see him too. Come in here,
[25:33] Speaker 4: you spindle headed bird grain barrymore, No, na, just a minute,
[25:38] Speaker 4: give me those films before you play the best best
[25:41] Speaker 4: scene you ever played in your life. Oh look, this
[25:43] Speaker 4: whole this whole job was my idea. I got some rights,
[25:45] Speaker 4: and it gives you rights in the head that it's done.
[25:48] Speaker 4: At least look at the pictures and then we can
[25:50] Speaker 4: bring him what's he gonna use for eyes when I
[25:52] Speaker 4: get through with him. You've got a lot of money
[25:53] Speaker 4: from my idea, Gus, and I'll get a lot of
[25:55] Speaker 4: time too. You give me those films. They're so help me.
[25:59] Speaker 4: Gos what you're gonna you had a lady guts, put
[26:02] Speaker 4: it away on the floor. Yeah, we wouldn't like to shoot.
[26:04] Speaker 4: Who are you? United States Counors? Fights? Come on, guys,
[26:07] Speaker 4: droppingness now, Butler, you'll give mister Peters those films right here, Butler,
[26:12] Speaker 4: but how you don't know? You go ahead, ham boom,
[26:16] Speaker 4: get an idea for this seat. I figured something all apart.
[26:20] Speaker 4: You had a bad final act, Butler. We didn't like it,
[26:22] Speaker 4: so we're rewriting it right now. All right, Peters, bring
[26:25] Speaker 4: them along.
[26:36] Speaker 2: Mister Harding will return in just a moment. Here's something interesting.
[26:40] Speaker 2: We're getting lots of repeat orders for our special offer
[26:43] Speaker 2: of a stainless steel slicing knife. Yeah, a great many
[26:46] Speaker 2: people have said in a second time when they received
[26:48] Speaker 2: their first one, they were so pleased with it that
[26:51] Speaker 2: they sent in for more. Now I'm not surprised at that,
[26:53] Speaker 2: because we guarantee this stainless steel slicing knife could be
[26:57] Speaker 2: the equal of knives selling at seventy five cents to
[27:00] Speaker 2: one dollar.
[27:01] Speaker 3: What's more, it has a blade that is hollow ground,
[27:03] Speaker 3: a feature usually found only in knives costing two dollars
[27:06] Speaker 3: or more.
[27:07] Speaker 2: Yet, we offer the stainless steel slicing knife to you
[27:11] Speaker 2: or only twenty five cents in coin with two wrappers
[27:14] Speaker 2: from either Old Knick or Bitter Honey candy Bars sent
[27:18] Speaker 2: to Old Nick Box one forty four, New York eight,
[27:21] Speaker 2: New York, we can make this offer only by special
[27:24] Speaker 2: arrangement with a famous cutlery manufacturer. He is the only
[27:28] Speaker 2: one in the country who has this new secret process
[27:31] Speaker 2: by which long lasting stainless steel can be successfully hollow ground.
[27:37] Speaker 2: We guarantee that this stainless steel slicing knife would compare
[27:41] Speaker 2: favorably with knives costing seventy five cents to one dollar
[27:45] Speaker 2: even without the special process hollow grinding. But hollow grinding
[27:50] Speaker 2: gives this knife longer life, a keener edge, and greater usefulness.
[27:55] Speaker 2: So you're really getting extra value, an outstanding bargain. By
[28:00] Speaker 2: now remember the address Old Nick, Box one forty four,
[28:03] Speaker 2: New York, eight, New York. For each stameless steel slicing
[28:07] Speaker 2: knife you want, send us two rappers from either Old
[28:10] Speaker 2: Nick or fit of honey candy bars and twenty five
[28:13] Speaker 2: cents in coin. This offer must be withdrawn very soon,
[28:16] Speaker 2: so be sure of your quick cut slicing knife. Send
[28:19] Speaker 2: your Waughder today.
[28:24] Speaker 4: This is David Harding. In the case you just heard,
[28:26] Speaker 4: all of parties pleaded guilty. There was nothing else they
[28:29] Speaker 4: could do, having provided the pictorial evidence themselves. They're serving
[28:33] Speaker 4: long terms in the federal penitentiary. And I understand Butler
[28:36] Speaker 4: is quite a hit as a leading man at Leavenworth.
[28:40] Speaker 4: Tune in next Sunday, same time, same station for the
[28:43] Speaker 4: case of the Man with the tattooed eye, who successfully
[28:46] Speaker 4: buried himself until the counter Spies had him fingered by
[28:50] Speaker 4: a woman in fight the award winning case of the
[28:54] Speaker 4: Recruited Nurse on David Harding Counter Spy. Tonight's David Harding
[29:08] Speaker 4: cownder Spy Case was directed by William M. Sweets and
[29:10] Speaker 4: dramatized by Palmer Thompson, with music by Jesse Crawford and
[29:14] Speaker 4: featured Don McLaughlan and Mandel Kramer. David Harding Counter Spy
[29:18] Speaker 4: is a Phillips h Lord production, originating in New York
[29:21] Speaker 4: for the makers of Old Nick and Better Honey Candy Bars.
[29:25] Speaker 4: Now a listening reminder, nobody knows for certain what is
[29:29] Speaker 4: going to happen, but Jill Pearson makes us astounding predictions
[29:33] Speaker 4: of news events to come here. Pearson Tonight is the ABC,
[29:36] Speaker 4: the American Broadcasting Company.
[29:40] Speaker 1: Welcome back, Well. I love the initial plot and the
[29:46] Speaker 1: idea of effectively getting the bank president and the police
[29:52] Speaker 1: to be accessories to the crime is a hilarious premise
[29:59] Speaker 1: and I think though in a way that's not too
[30:03] Speaker 1: silly to take seriously. The solution may be a bit
[30:07] Speaker 1: more of an issue for some listeners because essentially the
[30:12] Speaker 1: way that the case has resolved is the story saying.
[30:16] Speaker 4: Actors, am I right?
[30:18] Speaker 1: However, that doesn't ruin the story for me, because well,
[30:24] Speaker 1: I think there are some stereotypes from the golden age
[30:27] Speaker 1: of radio that we can push back on the idea
[30:31] Speaker 1: that there are a lot of actors out there who
[30:34] Speaker 1: are odd and have self destructive tendencies. Is it something
[30:39] Speaker 1: you could really dispute when covering actors being odd and
[30:46] Speaker 1: crashing out is a multi billion dollar industry. Now, of course,
[30:50] Speaker 1: the irony of this sort of script is that everyone
[30:57] Speaker 1: performing in it is an actor, and it is written
[31:01] Speaker 1: by a writer who has extensive contact with the entertainment industry.
[31:08] Speaker 1: Though I think that can give it some credibility, particularly
[31:11] Speaker 1: if they don't go into farce. And I love that
[31:14] Speaker 1: theatrical agent character and that line he had where he
[31:19] Speaker 1: said that the problem with actors is that they let
[31:24] Speaker 1: a good part distract them from the fact that it's
[31:28] Speaker 1: a bad play, or they lack the judgment to be
[31:31] Speaker 1: able to make that distinction. Now, of course, it is
[31:35] Speaker 1: a generalization and then as now, you will find actors
[31:40] Speaker 1: who got a good head on their shoulders, make good
[31:43] Speaker 1: decisions and take care of their business. But there have
[31:47] Speaker 1: always also been in the other kind with almost inexplicable
[31:52] Speaker 1: poor judgment. The only other thing I questioned is that
[31:55] Speaker 1: Peters was just able to walk in and just catch
[32:00] Speaker 1: the film being played. That seemed like awful lack of
[32:04] Speaker 1: security tecularly for someone who the episode strongly implies is
[32:13] Speaker 1: in the business of producing smart But if they didn't
[32:19] Speaker 1: tell him what it was, as he said, and I
[32:23] Speaker 1: don't have any reason to think that they did tell him,
[32:27] Speaker 1: then he just might have been treating it like any
[32:30] Speaker 1: other job, and probably just in his back room didn't
[32:34] Speaker 1: hear Peters come in. He might have taken other precautions
[32:38] Speaker 1: if he was aware that he was dealing with something
[32:41] Speaker 1: that was illegal or proof of a crime. Listener comments
[32:46] Speaker 1: and feedback now and Steven messages in last week he
[32:51] Speaker 1: wondered why the Counterspies are doing basic law enforcement. If
[32:54] Speaker 1: the Counterspies are actually a stand in for the FBI,
[32:58] Speaker 1: then it makes sense. Seems to me that they didn't
[33:01] Speaker 1: have approval from the FBI as other shows did so
[33:04] Speaker 1: they made up an agency to tell FBI style stories
[33:08] Speaker 1: without legal issues. That's an interesting point. I'm not certain
[33:14] Speaker 1: how much legal issues there would be, because the worst
[33:21] Speaker 1: series that did true stories about the FBI that weren't sanctioned,
[33:28] Speaker 1: like I know this is your FBI was one that
[33:33] Speaker 1: j Edgar Hoover approved of. But the FBI and Peace
[33:36] Speaker 1: and War didn't have as far as I know, that
[33:39] Speaker 1: sort of official cooperation still worked off true files and
[33:44] Speaker 1: was based on a book. Probably one thing with Counterspies
[33:48] Speaker 1: to stand in is that they're a fictitious agency and
[33:53] Speaker 1: they're not bound by what's known of the FBI. And
[33:57] Speaker 1: I have to think in this era that the FBI
[34:00] Speaker 1: would be concerned about what went out on the radio
[34:04] Speaker 1: even if it was a fictional story. But if you've
[34:06] Speaker 1: got a fictional agency, then that doesn't become a problem.
[34:11] Speaker 1: And this is another case where you could see the
[34:13] Speaker 1: FBI becoming involved. A bank robbery is usually a case
[34:19] Speaker 1: that they can get involved in regardless. Thanks for the comment, Steven.
[34:24] Speaker 1: And then we go to YouTube and this one is
[34:27] Speaker 1: regarding the stolen car racket. Dan Rat's This and the
[34:31] Speaker 1: next episode about the housing market are brutal. This podcast
[34:35] Speaker 1: was a must listen to when dealing with the war.
[34:37] Speaker 1: The episodes after the war are absolutely brutal. I will
[34:41] Speaker 1: probably be skipping these going forward. Still love Dragnet and
[34:44] Speaker 1: Johnny Dollar, but I'll have to look for something else
[34:47] Speaker 1: to fill for my Saturday, not dog Walk. Well, Dan,
[34:52] Speaker 1: I'm sorry that Counterspy is in the doghouse. I will
[34:57] Speaker 1: say that while there were some rough episode that the
[35:00] Speaker 1: series does have some stronger episodes and also finds a
[35:05] Speaker 1: bit more of its putting. As Tom goes on, I
[35:09] Speaker 1: wouldn't have chosen the series if I didn't think it
[35:12] Speaker 1: was good, and certainly if every episode was like the
[35:16] Speaker 1: Housing Racket, I think I would probably have passed on
[35:21] Speaker 1: playing it. So I appreciate people have different tastes and
[35:25] Speaker 1: interest but I think that for those who give it
[35:29] Speaker 1: a bit more time, they're going to find some really
[35:32] Speaker 1: good episodes they'll enjoy. Jeffrey Rise interesting show. And that
[35:36] Speaker 1: commercial for Old Nick KNDy bars was interesting. Seems it
[35:40] Speaker 1: stopped being made in nineteen seventy. Good to know, and
[35:47] Speaker 1: I look into it and Bit of Honey is actually
[35:51] Speaker 1: still around. So you can't go and get some Old Nick,
[35:55] Speaker 1: but you can have some bit of honey, and then
[35:59] Speaker 1: we go back to the housing racket on Spotify and
[36:03] Speaker 1: Dawn says, at least they could have made it communist developers. Oh,
[36:10] Speaker 1: that would have been something to make it feel a
[36:12] Speaker 1: little bit more counterspy, although I think that maybe a
[36:17] Speaker 1: year or two later, the national mood might have better
[36:21] Speaker 1: suited that particular plot. But good, no thought. All right, Well,
