[0:50] Speaker 1: Eats a lot multiple first, Yeah, I was. I was impressed.
[0:56] Speaker 1: I was impressed.
[0:57] Speaker 2: What's the do you go sorry, go to are no? No, no, please?
[1:01] Speaker 2: Just are we going to like a place and you're

[1:11] Speaker 3: Six pm, noodle dish, nine pm standing sushi bar, eleven
[1:16] Speaker 3: pm clombini. Stop. I'm getting some ice cream. I'm getting
[1:20] Speaker 3: a fan and I gotta get me a oh my god,
[1:24] Speaker 3: Pacari sweat drinks.
[1:28] Speaker 1: But it was like every night in.
[1:29] Speaker 3: The hotel room.
[1:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, everyone was impressed. I love that.
[1:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, Eric Van Allen, how you doing.
[1:35] Speaker 4: Last on the call card? But the one carrying us
[1:37] Speaker 4: when we're trying to play some boomstroke play earlier and
[1:40] Speaker 4: somebody is just slamming it directly into the rough and
[1:44] Speaker 4: the bunker.
[1:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, said, some people might not understand.
[1:48] Speaker 3: I heard boomstroke.
[1:51] Speaker 4: So earlier we did. And everybody's golf hot shots stream
[1:57] Speaker 4: with giant bomb in which we play boomstroke play, which
[2:02] Speaker 4: is just normal golf. But there are land mines on
[2:07] Speaker 4: like different parts of the course and somebody here not
[2:11] Speaker 4: gonna name names, but fifty percent of the team was
[2:14] Speaker 4: kind of struggling to keep the ball on the green,
[2:17] Speaker 4: if you know what I'm saying.
[2:19] Speaker 1: Yeah, listen, I was trying to play a golf game.
[2:21] Speaker 1: I'll also dealing with stream issues and I ended we
[2:24] Speaker 1: ended up I ended up being plus fifteen. I think
[2:28] Speaker 1: you're like plus fourteen by the end of that over par.
[2:32] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[2:32] Speaker 3: Yeah, you need to practice your boomstroke.
[2:35] Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, I do maybe after this podcast, but
[2:39] Speaker 1: let's get into the show proper. We're gonna be talking
[2:43] Speaker 1: about Little Nightmares three today West Reviewed that we're gonna
[2:45] Speaker 1: be getting into the early hours of Digimon Time Stranger.
[2:50] Speaker 1: We're gonna be playing a bit talking about our time
[2:52] Speaker 1: plane Apsolom, which is a game you should definitely look
[2:55] Speaker 1: out for and keep an eye on, and then at
[2:57] Speaker 1: the end of the show, getting into our favorite fall
[2:59] Speaker 1: game games, including horror games.
[3:02] Speaker 2: So it's gonna be a fun show.
[3:04] Speaker 1: But before that, I do want to say, if you

[3:30] Speaker 2: That's not what you're gonna You're gonna get a I'm

[4:19] Speaker 2: Yeah. I really appreciate that, guys.
[4:21] Speaker 1: Let's get into the show proper, Wes. You have been
[4:25] Speaker 1: playing the third installment in the Little Nightmares series. An
[4:29] Speaker 1: interesting installment because the original developers are no longer on board.
[4:34] Speaker 2: Is that correct? And yeah?
[4:35] Speaker 1: Kind of a new studio? What not a new studio?
[4:39] Speaker 2: But is it super massive?
[4:40] Speaker 1: Picking up the ring is?
[4:41] Speaker 3: Yeah? Tarsier Tarsier. I don't know why I always want
[4:44] Speaker 3: to say it like French Tarsier Tarsier Studios. I don't
[4:48] Speaker 3: think they're French. I met them at games Calm. I
[4:50] Speaker 3: believe they're Italian. They developed the Little Nightmares one and
[4:54] Speaker 3: two and now they are making their own game that's
[4:58] Speaker 3: very similar to Little Nightmares a bit different called Reanimal,
[5:03] Speaker 3: looking forward to that it's coming out next year. I
[5:04] Speaker 3: played a games come it's a good time in their place.
[5:07] Speaker 3: The developer of Little Nightmares two Enhanced Edition super Massive Games,
[5:13] Speaker 3: who you might know from until Dawn the Quarry or
[5:17] Speaker 3: Game in Former cover star, the casting of Frank Stone
[5:21] Speaker 3: from last year super Massive Games. They took over the
[5:25] Speaker 3: reins to do Little Nightmares three, and that's it's It's
[5:30] Speaker 3: cool to know, but to be honest, you're not really
[5:32] Speaker 3: gonna feel super Massive jumping in onto this franchise or
[5:37] Speaker 3: Tarsia leaving this franchise while playing Little Like It feels
[5:44] Speaker 3: this is another This fits right in with Little Nightmares
[5:48] Speaker 3: one and two. I do think it's probably the weakest
[5:50] Speaker 3: of the three, just because as the threequel, like the
[5:54] Speaker 3: third game in the series, it's it was probably time
[5:57] Speaker 3: to branch out a little and maybe spice up the
[6:00] Speaker 3: the formula a bit, and this game doesn't really do that,
[6:03] Speaker 3: though it does have some valiant efforts. But yeah, if
[6:07] Speaker 3: you were to play one, two, and three, I don't
[6:08] Speaker 3: think you'd recognize a developer switch up, which is you know,
[6:13] Speaker 3: credit to is super Massive. I don't think they were
[6:15] Speaker 3: brought in to radically change this Rangers. I think they
[6:18] Speaker 3: were brought in to make a third Little Nightmares game,
[6:21] Speaker 3: and that's what players are going to get when they
[6:22] Speaker 3: play it.
[6:23] Speaker 2: Now.
[6:24] Speaker 1: Is this the first entry in the series that has
[6:27] Speaker 1: co op?
[6:28] Speaker 3: It is, which is weird, right, Like that doesn't make
[6:32] Speaker 3: especially two, which two's whole thing was having an AI companion. Yeah,
[6:38] Speaker 3: everybody was like, oh, it's weird. It's not co op
[6:40] Speaker 3: and there is co op and Little Nightmares three. Crucially,
[6:43] Speaker 3: it is just online. It is not couch co op,
[6:45] Speaker 3: which to me is a massive miss, a super massive miss.
[6:50] Speaker 3: Shout out to Jesse Vitelli for the pun. Uh. Yeah,
[6:55] Speaker 3: the whole time I was playing, I actually was. I
[6:57] Speaker 3: told my wife like, I was really excited to review
[6:59] Speaker 3: this because we're gonna play it together, blah blah blah.
[7:01] Speaker 3: And I just guess I had him been paying attention,
[7:03] Speaker 3: got code and realized it was online co op only.
[7:05] Speaker 3: So I had to to break her heart because this
[7:07] Speaker 3: is one of the few game series she does really enjoy.
[7:11] Speaker 3: And yeah, it's just such a miss. It doesn't make
[7:13] Speaker 3: it just it really doesn't make sense to me.
[7:15] Speaker 2: I is there a cross play?
[7:19] Speaker 3: There is not cross play. But there is a thing.
[7:22] Speaker 3: There's friends Pass, which other studios have done, like Hay's Light,
[7:28] Speaker 3: where you one person buys the game and you can
[7:31] Speaker 3: like basically gift the game to another player free of cost.
[7:34] Speaker 3: So like, theoretically I could play with one of you
[7:37] Speaker 3: on PS five where I played it, and you wouldn't
[7:40] Speaker 3: have to buy the game. Uh that wasn't I remember?
[7:43] Speaker 1: Didn't you and Gabby play this play a little bit
[7:45] Speaker 1: Nightmares too when it came out when you had first
[7:46] Speaker 1: joined games.
[7:47] Speaker 3: I watched her, Yeah, I watched her play.
[7:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember you talking about that back then.
[7:51] Speaker 3: Yeah, and uh yeah. The friends pass is cool, and
[7:55] Speaker 3: I do think that's a neat feature. But for me,
[7:58] Speaker 3: this feels like a perfect game to play on the
[8:00] Speaker 3: couch with somebody, not I don't really want to be
[8:03] Speaker 3: in a headset with you know, playing with a friend,
[8:07] Speaker 3: especially because the ambiance and like the vibes of Little
[8:10] Speaker 3: Nightmares is so important. I don't know something about the
[8:12] Speaker 3: online peripheral. Speaking to a headset kind of takes me
[8:14] Speaker 3: out of it.
[8:15] Speaker 1: Do you know if it's Sorry for all the questions,
[8:17] Speaker 1: but do you know if it's steam deck verified, because
[8:20] Speaker 1: I'm curious if like, the next best thing would be
[8:23] Speaker 1: somebody playing on like setting up your PC on the
[8:25] Speaker 1: living room TV and then having somebody else playing steam
[8:29] Speaker 1: Deck on a different account with the print.
[8:31] Speaker 3: I don't I don't know. I'm checking.
[8:36] Speaker 4: Is that somebody plays on the someone else in the
[8:38] Speaker 4: game pad?
[8:40] Speaker 2: Yeah it is. It is steam Deck verified.
[8:42] Speaker 3: Okay, okay, that's a solid work around on PC.
[8:46] Speaker 2: I asked about the cross play because my fiance and
[8:50] Speaker 2: I have the cursed dual TV living room setup where
[8:53] Speaker 2: we both we play in the same room, but I've
[8:56] Speaker 2: got the Xbox hookup to one TV in the PlayStation
[8:59] Speaker 2: hookup to the other one, so if there was cross play,
[9:01] Speaker 2: we could do it in the same room. There's not
[9:03] Speaker 2: cross play, so I guess we'd have to do a
[9:05] Speaker 2: weird PC work around.
[9:07] Speaker 3: Yeah, there might be cross play, but I don't think
[9:09] Speaker 3: the friends pass would work through that because when you
[9:12] Speaker 3: like toyed around with the option, it like brings up
[9:14] Speaker 3: my PSN friends list. But yeah, that's besides the point.
[9:18] Speaker 3: Like co op, it's cool, it's cool. It's the first
[9:20] Speaker 3: time there a little while to me that it's not
[9:22] Speaker 3: couch co op. But I do think it'll be a
[9:24] Speaker 3: cool feature for people that want to play this game together.
[9:27] Speaker 3: That said, I played the majority of it with the
[9:29] Speaker 3: AI Companion, who is for the most part pretty good.
[9:32] Speaker 3: They died a few times, like being stupid, which is
[9:35] Speaker 3: kind of annoying and frustrating when you're playing solo because
[9:38] Speaker 3: like I know what to do and I'm like this,
[9:39] Speaker 3: dude's come on, let's go, and they're just not. There's
[9:42] Speaker 3: also like two or three times where you have to
[9:45] Speaker 3: jump on a hatch together to knock it down so
[9:48] Speaker 3: you can like fall through it and you have to
[9:51] Speaker 3: jump at the same time and land at the same time,
[9:54] Speaker 3: and they were unable to sink to me, like I
[9:58] Speaker 3: would jump and then they would jump after me and
[10:00] Speaker 3: never works, so I had to wait and learn the
[10:02] Speaker 3: AI's jump patterns to jump in not anything I would
[10:06] Speaker 3: like mark the game for that that puzzle. That puzzle
[10:10] Speaker 3: is only in the game for like a couple of times,
[10:12] Speaker 3: but I thought that was very funny. The AI Companion
[10:15] Speaker 3: does a decent job overall, So with the co op
[10:19] Speaker 3: that's like the big new feature. The reason for that
[10:21] Speaker 3: is there's two playable characters, Low and Alone. One is
[10:25] Speaker 3: a little boy who has like a blue cape and
[10:27] Speaker 3: a white raven mask and a bow and arrow which
[10:30] Speaker 3: he can use to like shoot strings that break things
[10:33] Speaker 3: so you can like drop items to the floor, or
[10:35] Speaker 3: he can shoot switches and enemies occasionally. And then the
[10:39] Speaker 3: other is a little girl with these very cute little
[10:41] Speaker 3: red pigtails, and she wears a green suit and a mask.
[10:45] Speaker 3: She kind of looks like six I think that co
[10:47] Speaker 3: Eating Cambria soundtrack CGI movie from like two thousand and nine.
[10:52] Speaker 3: Maybe it's a weirdly deep pool. I haven't about that
[10:57] Speaker 3: movie in forever. And she has a giant wrench which
[11:00] Speaker 3: she can use to like bash the heads in of enemies. Again,
[11:03] Speaker 3: there's not much combat that this is not a combat game,
[11:06] Speaker 3: but occasionally you do that or to like hit buttons
[11:08] Speaker 3: on the wall and stuff, So that's cool in theory, Like, oh,
[11:13] Speaker 3: there's two different playable characters. I'm curious how they will
[11:16] Speaker 3: play differently and interact with each other. The biggest miss
[11:19] Speaker 3: for the game, One of the biggest misses for me
[11:21] Speaker 3: is that one they don't really have communication or interactions.
[11:27] Speaker 3: There's no real personalities between these two. For the most part,
[11:31] Speaker 3: they're just two walking bodies that perform the actions you
[11:34] Speaker 3: hit on the controller and I would have liked to
[11:36] Speaker 3: have seen a little more interaction between them. And there
[11:38] Speaker 3: is a story reason I think that super Massive could
[11:41] Speaker 3: say is the reason why that's so, But I don't know.
[11:45] Speaker 3: That's not enough for me, Like I still have to
[11:48] Speaker 3: endure six to eight hours of these two characters with
[11:50] Speaker 3: little interaction. Mechanically, they sometimes work together to solve puzzles,
[11:57] Speaker 3: like I there's one that it's actually in our review
[12:00] Speaker 3: where you pull down like a projector image and it
[12:02] Speaker 3: has certain buttons you need to hit and the other
[12:06] Speaker 3: character while you're while one character is pulling down that
[12:08] Speaker 3: image to show that on the screen, the other character
[12:11] Speaker 3: has to look at it and shoot buttons based on
[12:14] Speaker 3: what they see. And that's a cool puzzle, And there
[12:15] Speaker 3: are cool moments like that, but they're very few and
[12:18] Speaker 3: far between. For the most part, this game plays a
[12:21] Speaker 3: lot like Little Nightmares one and two, where you're just
[12:23] Speaker 3: solo and you are moving boxes to climb up on
[12:27] Speaker 3: stuff and escaping through shoots and crawling through vents, and
[12:32] Speaker 3: it gets pretty repetitive pretty fast. The saving grace of
[12:37] Speaker 3: Little Nightmares three is the vibes and the ambiance that
[12:40] Speaker 3: has persisted through all three games. I enjoyed seeing what
[12:45] Speaker 3: was next. I enjoyed running from these terrifying creatures. I
[12:48] Speaker 3: enjoyed just being in this world. And it just barely
[12:52] Speaker 3: edged out the repetitive nature of the gameplay. I think,
[12:56] Speaker 3: like you're not You're doing a lot of the same
[12:58] Speaker 3: things over and over. It's really cool that sometimes it's
[13:02] Speaker 3: in a carnival, or sometimes and it's in a rotten
[13:04] Speaker 3: candy factory with a giant, terrifying baby or weird spider
[13:09] Speaker 3: lady that chases after you. But yeah, I think this
[13:14] Speaker 3: is a This is like a very decent crack at
[13:16] Speaker 3: Little Nightmares three, rocking at.
[13:19] Speaker 1: All as somebody who has always been interested in Little Nightmares,
[13:23] Speaker 1: but I haven't actually played the series number one? Is
[13:27] Speaker 1: it cool to jump in with this one? I think
[13:28] Speaker 1: they're all different characters, right, so I.
[13:30] Speaker 2: Could start this one.
[13:33] Speaker 3: This one is the most standalone. I think they're on
[13:36] Speaker 3: the same universe. One happens, two has connections to one,
[13:41] Speaker 3: like it's a it's an actual sequel in a lot
[13:43] Speaker 3: of ways. Three is like completely standalone, although to be honest,
[13:47] Speaker 3: like I think one came out in twenty eighteen, twenty seventeen,
[13:52] Speaker 3: but like you wouldn't know the difference between this and three,
[13:55] Speaker 3: Like you wouldn't be able to tell there's years of development,
[13:57] Speaker 3: Like going Back does not feel old or anything. That
[13:59] Speaker 3: game is still up really well, it's a blast. I
[14:02] Speaker 3: honestly probably recommend starting with one, unless you just want
[14:06] Speaker 3: to talk about three with people playing here right now.
[14:09] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, the thing that's always the challenge with
[14:12] Speaker 1: us is like, oh, we got to consider this for
[14:15] Speaker 1: end of year awards and stuff, and so it's like,
[14:17] Speaker 1: I guess I could play the new one, but I
[14:19] Speaker 1: have wanted to play that series for a while. But
[14:22] Speaker 1: my second question is how scary is this compared to
[14:27] Speaker 1: like my my, Again, I don't play a ton of
[14:29] Speaker 1: horror games, So like recent horror games I've played and
[14:32] Speaker 1: enjoyed were like Resident Evil Village, Signalis stuff like that,
[14:39] Speaker 1: How does this compare scare wise.
[14:41] Speaker 3: Nowhere near as scary as Residon Evil Village. If you
[14:44] Speaker 3: played Village, you'll be fine with any of the Little
[14:46] Speaker 3: Nightmares games. The type of horror that is in Little
[14:51] Speaker 3: Nightmares is very like Tim Burton esque, okay, where it's
[14:56] Speaker 3: playful and creepy and there's like some dread, but it's
[15:02] Speaker 3: not outright horrific. I mean, some of these monster designs
[15:05] Speaker 3: will give you like the they're just creepy Crawley's like
[15:09] Speaker 3: you'll feel goosebumps, but like you aren't going to be shrieking. Ever,
[15:12] Speaker 3: there's not really it's not like a jump scare specific thing.
[15:15] Speaker 3: If you made it through Village or really any modern
[15:17] Speaker 3: resident evil game like these will be a piece of cake.
[15:20] Speaker 3: These are It's like watching Corpse Bride or like Frank
[15:24] Speaker 3: and Weenie, but maybe with like a higher rating instead
[15:27] Speaker 3: of being PG. It's like PG thirteen.
[15:30] Speaker 1: These games always remind me of a scape Plan on
[15:32] Speaker 1: the PS Vita.
[15:35] Speaker 3: I'm not familiar with that game. Okay, I only played
[15:39] Speaker 3: like six things on my Vita. I loved that console,
[15:42] Speaker 3: but I did not play that game. I put a
[15:43] Speaker 3: lot of hours in a percent of four instead.
[15:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fair that.
[15:47] Speaker 3: The gist of Little Nightmares and all three is, for
[15:49] Speaker 3: the most part is just escaping, Like you're just in
[15:51] Speaker 3: these terrible places and you're an underpowered child pretty much
[15:58] Speaker 3: like I know you are children, and you're just trying
[15:59] Speaker 3: to escape these childhood fear like monstrosities. I think that's
[16:04] Speaker 3: something that's really cool about Little Nightmares is that it
[16:06] Speaker 3: plays into even the title itself. Little nightmares like these
[16:10] Speaker 3: aren't and that's not like Resident Evil where these zombies
[16:15] Speaker 3: are coming to like eviscerate you and rip open your
[16:17] Speaker 3: flesh like it's like a scary spider lady or a
[16:21] Speaker 3: big baby doll that is terrifying. And as someone who
[16:23] Speaker 3: grew up and like my grandparents had the most terrifying
[16:27] Speaker 3: life size girl doll ever that would always be in
[16:30] Speaker 3: the room in a corner on a rocking chair in
[16:33] Speaker 3: the room that I stayed at at their house. That yeah,
[16:36] Speaker 3: and it blinked and stuff. It was awful. It was
[16:37] Speaker 3: not good. And they used to like they think they
[16:39] Speaker 3: would sometimes if we were like sleeping in too much,
[16:41] Speaker 3: they would have put it at the end of our
[16:42] Speaker 3: bed and then wake us up. What the hell not
[16:46] Speaker 3: my grandpa, my grandparents were they there a little pranksters.
[16:51] Speaker 1: It sounds like any to get canceled.
[16:58] Speaker 2: Ninety year old man canceled.
[17:00] Speaker 3: God, I'll go to my grandma's grave and let her
[17:03] Speaker 3: know that she's canceled.
[17:06] Speaker 2: Do Yeah, I just want to talk.
[17:12] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[17:15] Speaker 3: So yeah, the fears are like they're playing on like
[17:17] Speaker 3: the the things that are scary as as a but
[17:20] Speaker 3: even like level is not like clowns. It's like it's
[17:24] Speaker 3: just a spooky part. There's not you're not going to
[17:26] Speaker 3: run into like any clowns. It's just it's it's and
[17:29] Speaker 3: the art style is really cool. I say Tim Burton
[17:31] Speaker 3: because it feels very like molded by hands, like and
[17:35] Speaker 3: using clay and like other features like that. It's not clay,
[17:38] Speaker 3: it's not claymation. It's not stop motion or anything like that,
[17:42] Speaker 3: but it feels like these are characters somebody made on
[17:45] Speaker 3: a table with like real life materials that were scanned
[17:49] Speaker 3: into a game. And I think that's the real strength
[17:52] Speaker 3: of Little Nightmares is the visual style and the worlds
[17:55] Speaker 3: that you get to play around in. It's dark stuff.
[18:00] Speaker 1: Yeah for those of us, for those of us with
[18:02] Speaker 1: normal childhoods, though, we should be less scared.
[18:06] Speaker 2: Probably yeah, you'll be less scared.
[18:10] Speaker 3: But I mean, like I think it's in my review
[18:12] Speaker 3: the best way to like sum up the scares of
[18:15] Speaker 3: Little Nightmares is you're not gonna shriek, You're not gonna
[18:18] Speaker 3: beything like that. You're just gonna see something and you're
[18:20] Speaker 3: gonna be like nope, nope, absolutely not no, no. No. Works
[18:25] Speaker 3: to the games, Yeah, it works to the game strength
[18:27] Speaker 3: because you're trying to escape and anytime you're watching something
[18:30] Speaker 3: and you just want to be like Nope, absolutely not.
[18:32] Speaker 3: You just want to leave, And that's what the game
[18:34] Speaker 3: is all about, is just just leave, get out of
[18:36] Speaker 3: that room.
[18:37] Speaker 2: Yeah. I like that. Well, Wes, what would do you
[18:41] Speaker 2: give it? Would you? Would you score Little Nightmares?
[18:43] Speaker 3: I gave it a seven point five because it's like
[18:47] Speaker 3: it's one of those it's it was a tough game
[18:49] Speaker 3: to score because for all its faults, it's it's still
[18:54] Speaker 3: so much closely aligned with what Little Nightmares is that
[18:57] Speaker 3: I had a fun time. Like if you're looking for
[19:02] Speaker 3: a Halloween game, and I think this is a great
[19:04] Speaker 3: game to play in October. It's something I always wrestle
[19:06] Speaker 3: with is like when we're reviewing a game, I'm trying
[19:11] Speaker 3: to poke holes in it and find what works and
[19:13] Speaker 3: what doesn't work for me, Whereas but I'm just playing
[19:15] Speaker 3: a game for fun. It's so easy to gloss over
[19:18] Speaker 3: and issue a game has like I just and that's
[19:20] Speaker 3: just part of the job. So like, if you're someone
[19:23] Speaker 3: who just wants a fun, co op horror game, like
[19:25] Speaker 3: this will be it. And it's like six hours, maybe
[19:28] Speaker 3: six to eight hours, maybe even less. There's collectibles and
[19:30] Speaker 3: stuff to find, but like it's not necessary, Like it's
[19:34] Speaker 3: a quick, fun, little horror romp. If you want to
[19:37] Speaker 3: skip movie night a couple of nights this October, like
[19:40] Speaker 3: play some little nightmers cool.
[19:43] Speaker 2: That sounds fun.
[19:44] Speaker 1: Well, wells, thanks for for stopping buying chatting through your review.
[19:48] Speaker 1: I know you're busy and you gotta go, but yeah,
[19:51] Speaker 1: thanks for thanks for keeping us up to date on
[19:54] Speaker 1: on Little lightmres three.
[19:57] Speaker 3: Yeah, of course, thanks for having me.
[19:59] Speaker 1: All Right, bye, Wes, see everybody else in just a second, bye,
[20:04] Speaker 1: and we're back.
[20:05] Speaker 2: Eric.
[20:06] Speaker 1: I'm gonna toss the popcorn ball over to you to
[20:10] Speaker 1: talk about.
[20:12] Speaker 4: Isn't that a thing, popcorn ball, the popcorn tall.
[20:15] Speaker 2: It exists. Popcorn balls are a thing. That's that's a
[20:18] Speaker 2: fact one corn.
[20:24] Speaker 4: You can't just keep saying pop like he'll get it eventually, Cornisle.
[20:30] Speaker 2: Don't say like you're casting a spell. Pop style is
[20:33] Speaker 2: like people go around the room and they interject at
[20:36] Speaker 2: their own times, like kernels of corn in a popcorn bag.
[20:40] Speaker 1: Yeah, and you toss the ball, but.
[20:44] Speaker 2: You're just saying, okay, he tossed.
[20:46] Speaker 1: The ball to somebody that's there. Turn to talk and
[20:47] Speaker 1: you say popcorn you'll do some crazy stuff here in
[20:52] Speaker 1: the Midwest.
[20:53] Speaker 2: I think that's a specific ritual at your school, but
[20:56] Speaker 2: I don't that's a Virginia education system. Yeah, I thought
[20:59] Speaker 2: you were crazy actually so yeah yeah, Eric Popcornball, Yeah yeah,
[21:08] Speaker 2: Eric popcorn You're gonna talk about Digimon time Stranger.
[21:11] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, let's talk about this. Let's talk about popcorn bon.
[21:14] Speaker 4: That's not a real Digitmon. I don't think. I can't
[21:16] Speaker 4: be sure it could be. Yeah, there's no real way
[21:19] Speaker 4: of proving it right or wrong. Uh, Digitmon story Time
[21:22] Speaker 4: Stranger is so some some pretext I I was not.
[21:29] Speaker 4: I wouldn't say I wasn't a digitmon kid, but I
[21:32] Speaker 4: wouldn't say it defined me the way that like it
[21:36] Speaker 4: did for some digitmon kids, if that makes sense, because
[21:39] Speaker 4: I feel like I don't know if y'all had this
[21:40] Speaker 4: when when you were growing up, but there was kind
[21:43] Speaker 4: of the the Pokemon kids and the digitmon kids right there.
[21:46] Speaker 4: There were there was something that were like, oh, well
[21:48] Speaker 4: you and Pokemon was was the majority, Like like everybody
[21:52] Speaker 4: knew about Pokemon followed Pokemon.
[21:53] Speaker 2: Some of us were cultured and liked both. I would say, sure,
[21:56] Speaker 2: I will say I was. I think I was later.
[22:00] Speaker 2: I'm a little younger than both of you. I didn't
[22:02] Speaker 2: know any Digimon kids. I knew Digimon as like a concept,
[22:05] Speaker 2: but I don't think I ever met someone that like
[22:07] Speaker 2: was into Digitmon.
[22:08] Speaker 4: There was there was some pride of the underdog in
[22:12] Speaker 4: the digitmon kids, right, and that they were like, oh,
[22:15] Speaker 4: ours is like more interesting, It's like more mature. There's
[22:19] Speaker 4: like stuff happening in it, like our digitmon, like the
[22:22] Speaker 4: things happen there. And this was like between fourth and
[22:25] Speaker 4: fifth grader, so like is the.
[22:28] Speaker 2: What is the things happened? What is the flex there?
[22:31] Speaker 4: Like like like in Pokemon's like, oh Pikachu, Pikachu does
[22:35] Speaker 4: fun stuff, but like in Digitmon, like they turn into
[22:37] Speaker 4: stuff with like guns and cannons something, they like fight
[22:40] Speaker 4: for the fate of the universe and all that kind
[22:41] Speaker 4: of stuff to save the digital world. And then you
[22:45] Speaker 4: had me, who I was like monster ranchers really cool
[22:49] Speaker 4: and nobody cared uh and then Yu gi Oh came
[22:52] Speaker 4: in and swept all that away. So that's kind of
[22:54] Speaker 4: a time capsule of my youth. But so with that context,
[22:58] Speaker 4: I did watch Digitmon when I was younger because it
[23:01] Speaker 4: was on I think it was like WB Kids or
[23:03] Speaker 4: something like that in the morning. But I always thought
[23:07] Speaker 4: of it as it's an alternative to Pokemon. It's a
[23:10] Speaker 4: it's a similar, It's a monster raising game of some kind.
[23:13] Speaker 4: And there's a lot, you know, on the spectrum of
[23:16] Speaker 4: monster raising. You have Monster Rancher, Pokemon, Digitmon.
[23:19] Speaker 2: Uh.
[23:19] Speaker 4: This is gonna throw some people for a loop to
[23:21] Speaker 4: have never thought of this before. But Shi Maygan me
[23:23] Speaker 4: tense is a monster raising game.
[23:26] Speaker 2: Uh definitely. Yeah.
[23:27] Speaker 4: Yeah, And so even like Dragon Quest Monsters and stuff
[23:31] Speaker 4: like that, you have a lot of like it's it's
[23:33] Speaker 4: it's a side of the RPG spectrum. And I just
[23:35] Speaker 4: considered dijimon like like on the kid's side of it.
[23:39] Speaker 4: But for years, folks like good Friend the Show, Kenna Shepherd,
[23:42] Speaker 4: uh would always tell me like, hey, Digitmon story Cypressluth
[23:45] Speaker 4: really really good, Like it's it's actually very very good.
[23:50] Speaker 4: I just never really believed to be honest, and Uh
[23:55] Speaker 4: with Time Stranger, I played it at SGF, gave it,
[23:58] Speaker 4: gave it on a shot, walked out of there and
[24:00] Speaker 4: said that was probably the best thing I've seen at SGF.
[24:03] Speaker 1: And I remember you saying that, and I was shocked.
[24:06] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, I was surprised because I had played stuff
[24:10] Speaker 4: like Pragmata and things like that there and I was like, no,
[24:14] Speaker 4: that that was the best thing I've seen. And I
[24:18] Speaker 4: don't know if Time Stranger is something I'm not far
[24:22] Speaker 4: enough in to feel like it's, you know, in contention
[24:25] Speaker 4: for one of my favorites of the year or anything
[24:26] Speaker 4: like that, but I think it has been one of
[24:28] Speaker 4: my biggest surprises of twenty twenty five, is did you
[24:32] Speaker 4: mut story? Time Stranger is just a really solid monster
[24:37] Speaker 4: raising RPG at a time when I think people are
[24:40] Speaker 4: kind of hungry for that, especially one that's a little
[24:43] Speaker 4: bit more complex, a little bit more nuanced, a little
[24:46] Speaker 4: bit more involved than what you would expect from other
[24:49] Speaker 4: titans of the genre. So yeah, to give an overview,
[24:54] Speaker 4: you're kind of an agent of a damis you get
[24:56] Speaker 4: put into this story in media arrests. You're gonna be
[24:59] Speaker 4: confused by the intro. Don't worry. You're kind of supposed
[25:01] Speaker 4: to be, is what I quickly learned. But you do
[25:06] Speaker 4: your first dungeon and they teach you all this stuff,
[25:09] Speaker 4: but basically you're just fighting digimon And one thing I
[25:12] Speaker 4: really like is that you just fight them and to
[25:14] Speaker 4: capture them, you just beat them in battle and kind
[25:16] Speaker 4: of internalize their code so that you can like spring
[25:20] Speaker 4: it forth from the digital world and add them to
[25:24] Speaker 4: your party, which I think is cool. I like that
[25:26] Speaker 4: more than the Pokemon catching personally to draw comparison or
[25:30] Speaker 4: like shit may go me tense bartering, which is goofy
[25:34] Speaker 4: and fun in its own way but gets old after
[25:35] Speaker 4: a while for me. And what really makes digitmon stand
[25:40] Speaker 4: apart is all the digivolutions. So there's so much stat
[25:45] Speaker 4: work and personality type manipulation and stuff you can do
[25:49] Speaker 4: where you can kind of start to take this digitmon
[25:51] Speaker 4: from a base form and start branching it out into
[25:54] Speaker 4: these different paths to say, I want to digitvalve you
[25:56] Speaker 4: up into this, so you get this ability or this,
[26:00] Speaker 4: and then d digivolv you back and take you into
[26:02] Speaker 4: a different path. So now it's like the abilities of
[26:04] Speaker 4: one digmon on the body of another, and you're doing
[26:07] Speaker 4: all this cool stuff that I think really reminds me
[26:10] Speaker 4: of the things I like the most in RPGs. I've
[26:13] Speaker 4: been playing this just off the back of playing Fall
[26:15] Speaker 4: Fantasy Tactics, a game which I think has one of
[26:17] Speaker 4: the coolest job systems ever. And a lot of that
[26:20] Speaker 4: is about how do I take kind of the component
[26:23] Speaker 4: pieces of different jobs and form them into something that
[26:26] Speaker 4: I think is going to be a really powerful single unit.
[26:28] Speaker 4: Because I'm having to do all these battles where I'm
[26:30] Speaker 4: five people up against ten twelve tons of units that
[26:34] Speaker 4: are all really powerful, I've got to figure out how
[26:36] Speaker 4: to mix and match to win. And I think digmon
[26:39] Speaker 4: has some of that DNA in it, where you're making
[26:42] Speaker 4: these really cool choices about I'm going to take a
[26:45] Speaker 4: monster down this path and lean into this and then
[26:49] Speaker 4: maybe like, oh this isn't working out or I need
[26:51] Speaker 4: something different, and I'm going to do dig evolve and
[26:53] Speaker 4: see if I can go into a different path. It's
[26:55] Speaker 4: always progressing, it's always fluid in a way that feels
[26:59] Speaker 4: really really fun in this sort of style. Yeah, that's
[27:04] Speaker 4: and and on top of that, like the digitmon. If
[27:07] Speaker 4: you haven't seen digitmon before, if you haven't played a digitmon,
[27:11] Speaker 4: if you don't know what a digitmon looks like, I
[27:14] Speaker 4: could show you fifteen pictures of digitmon and say which
[27:18] Speaker 4: one of these are digitmon and which one aren't, and
[27:19] Speaker 4: you would get them wrong. Because there's some wild digitmon
[27:25] Speaker 4: out there. Times where you have a little oh.
[27:28] Speaker 5: It's a little guy, just a little, little, flubby, little
[27:31] Speaker 5: little guy, and then all of a sudden he turns
[27:33] Speaker 5: into like, Oh, I'm a tank now, or I'm like
[27:36] Speaker 5: a humanoid angel like descending.
[27:38] Speaker 4: From the heavens, yeah, or or I'm a garbage can
[27:44] Speaker 4: look yeah. Yeah. I love that stuff, and I think
[27:48] Speaker 4: that gets really fun as the game goes on, too,
[27:50] Speaker 4: you start to see all the different evolutions and versions
[27:53] Speaker 4: of these mons interact and become parts of your party,
[27:56] Speaker 4: and these little grubby guys become these giants weapons of
[28:01] Speaker 4: war and stuff like that. It's a really enjoyable game.
[28:04] Speaker 4: I mean, it's having explosion on Steam right now. We
[28:09] Speaker 4: did a YouTube short on it, but basically was outpacing
[28:13] Speaker 4: at launch several mainline RPG series PC launch, which granted
[28:18] Speaker 4: some of those games were ports or later launches and
[28:21] Speaker 4: stuff like that, but it was doing extremely well and
[28:26] Speaker 4: is maybe a sign that people are hungry for more
[28:29] Speaker 4: in this space, especially because when you think about other
[28:31] Speaker 4: monster taming games Shimmy Gammy tense happens once in a
[28:34] Speaker 4: blue moon. Pokemon's kind of locked to the switch. I
[28:37] Speaker 4: do think there is a hunger for people who play
[28:39] Speaker 4: on steam Deck, who play on PC, who play on
[28:41] Speaker 4: all these different platforms to have something that they can
[28:44] Speaker 4: easily access and get a lot out of. And I
[28:47] Speaker 4: think Ditchmond is smartly targeting that audience and it feels
[28:51] Speaker 4: like it's working very well. So it's a really exceptional game.
[28:55] Speaker 4: Like I said, I'm a few hours in. I'm not
[28:57] Speaker 4: super deep. I can't really speak to any of the
[28:59] Speaker 4: larger stuff at the time stranger part where to my understanding,
[29:04] Speaker 4: you jump between moments and time and things like that.
[29:07] Speaker 4: It kind of affects where you are in the world
[29:09] Speaker 4: and how you can access side quests and things like
[29:11] Speaker 4: things like that. But I've I've been hearing very positive
[29:15] Speaker 4: things and I've been enjoying my time quite a bit.
[29:19] Speaker 1: Yeah, this is definitely one of those games I want
[29:21] Speaker 1: to fire up on steam Deck and play through. I
[29:24] Speaker 1: just installed it last night. Actually maybe after Clarubscear. I've
[29:29] Speaker 1: started clarib Scear finally in a real way. Yeah, and
[29:34] Speaker 1: I'm probably three hours three and a half hours under
[29:37] Speaker 1: claib Steer. Really enjoying that markedly different I think where
[29:44] Speaker 1: clarb Scar is like really dark. Not that Digimond isn't
[29:46] Speaker 1: dark at times, but like I'm definitely going to be.
[29:50] Speaker 1: I'm playing Silk Song and Clerpscar at the same time.
[29:53] Speaker 1: Both those games very dark and just like oppressive.
[29:57] Speaker 4: It's a total difference. And I think in some cases
[30:00] Speaker 4: digimon that's where sometimes I think people can bristle is
[30:04] Speaker 4: they'll be like, I literally just had a big story
[30:07] Speaker 4: moment happen and this this thing transpired, and I was like, Oh,
[30:10] Speaker 4: what just happened? And all of a sudden, I'm howling
[30:13] Speaker 4: around with some little digitmon and they're like, oh, help us,
[30:17] Speaker 4: help us find that the person we're looking for. Look
[30:19] Speaker 4: out Mini, And I'm like, oh god, I look, I
[30:25] Speaker 4: have a decent tolerance for that kind of stuff, but
[30:29] Speaker 4: I don't know. I always think of if you watched
[30:31] Speaker 4: O G Gundam, they're like characters in the original Gundam
[30:34] Speaker 4: double O seven nine that are like two kids that
[30:36] Speaker 4: have stowed away on the White Base, and they're always
[30:39] Speaker 4: the ones that are getting into trouble and needing to
[30:42] Speaker 4: be saved by the protagonists, and they're the ones that
[30:45] Speaker 4: they're the scrappy do or like if you want this
[30:48] Speaker 4: is a crazy pole if you watch the Land Before Time,
[30:51] Speaker 4: it's like the younger dinosaurs in Land Before Time that
[30:53] Speaker 4: are always getting into trouble and then the slightly older
[30:56] Speaker 4: dinosaurs have to go save them. I have low tolerance
[30:59] Speaker 4: for that sort of thing, and there is like a
[31:01] Speaker 4: little bit of that where I'm at right now. But
[31:03] Speaker 4: I think overall it is a like you're saying, it's
[31:05] Speaker 4: slightly more mature than you think it's going to be.
[31:08] Speaker 4: So it's thankfully not all that, And I do like
[31:12] Speaker 4: that it does seem to want to touch on things, like,
[31:18] Speaker 4: you know, the real world. I think that's always been
[31:21] Speaker 4: Digimon's advantage. Is it kind of broadly gestures at, okay, well,
[31:28] Speaker 4: what kind of effect has the internet had on society?
[31:31] Speaker 4: And has it been a good one? What would sort
[31:34] Speaker 4: of conversations about that sort of stuff? How would they
[31:36] Speaker 4: play out in real life? And Cybersluth was a little
[31:39] Speaker 4: bit more on the nose. I did finally after playing
[31:41] Speaker 4: at SGF, I went back and played some of Cyberslooth
[31:44] Speaker 4: because I was like, oh, they were right. Those digitmon
[31:46] Speaker 4: story games are very good. Cybersluth has a little bit
[31:49] Speaker 4: more of that front loaded, whereas Time Stranger has taken
[31:51] Speaker 4: a while to get there, but I'm led to understand
[31:53] Speaker 4: that some of the later story beats get surprisingly complex,
[31:57] Speaker 4: so I think wise you'll find a good mesh of
[32:03] Speaker 4: Saturday Morning cartoon and oh this is surprisingly deep.
[32:08] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good to hear.
[32:10] Speaker 2: I did want to ask, and maybe you said this
[32:13] Speaker 2: a while ago and I just missed it. Who are
[32:16] Speaker 2: you playing?
[32:17] Speaker 4: As it's a great question, like what is you're you're
[32:23] Speaker 4: an agent of a damis And and again I'm playing
[32:26] Speaker 4: with I'm a few hours in and they very intentionally
[32:29] Speaker 4: withhold major story stuff with the feeling that you're supposed
[32:34] Speaker 4: to be like what is going on here? What is
[32:36] Speaker 4: actually happening? But to to set it up, you are
[32:40] Speaker 4: infiltrating this walled city essentially like a walled section of
[32:45] Speaker 4: a city that has been sealed off after some calamity
[32:49] Speaker 4: happens or some sort of bad thing happened there. And
[32:52] Speaker 4: it's a really cool intro, I think, because you kind
[32:54] Speaker 4: of infiltrate this area and you're kind of moving through
[32:57] Speaker 4: this crowd that is protesting the blockage of the area,
[33:01] Speaker 4: and then you actually go in through the sewers and
[33:03] Speaker 4: infiltrate it, and that's when you start having to use
[33:05] Speaker 4: digitmon to fight. Also, you launch a digimon out of
[33:08] Speaker 4: a gun, which is kind of sick, you know, like
[33:11] Speaker 4: a yeah, yeah, yeah, like just a full on handgun,
[33:14] Speaker 4: like like you do this like pose like a Tokusatsu pose,
[33:17] Speaker 4: and you just like and shoot your digitmon out. It's
[33:20] Speaker 4: kind of cool.
[33:22] Speaker 2: Where it's persona three, except they accidentally have a didjumon
[33:25] Speaker 2: gun until they just shoot it, did you youmon at
[33:28] Speaker 2: their head?
[33:28] Speaker 4: And then yeah, launch an auguman directly into their cranium. Yeah, yeah,
[33:35] Speaker 4: I I don't know about that.
[33:38] Speaker 2: But.
[33:39] Speaker 4: They have infiltrated on that. They you infiltrate the city.
[33:43] Speaker 4: You find some characters who seem to know who you
[33:46] Speaker 4: are or have a connection to you, but you don't
[33:48] Speaker 4: know them. And there's a lot of just in media
[33:51] Speaker 4: res of like things have happened, and you can tell
[33:53] Speaker 4: that there's something strange afoot because you're a damis is
[33:58] Speaker 4: I forget what it even stands for. But basically, you
[34:00] Speaker 4: investigate anomalies. You look for oddities in the real world
[34:05] Speaker 4: and how they might be affecting and you handle them
[34:08] Speaker 4: kind of a men in Black situation almost, but obviously
[34:13] Speaker 4: there's more at play than you are to understand. But
[34:16] Speaker 4: you get into the middle of this fight between several
[34:19] Speaker 4: large digimond that all seem to be fighting over something.
[34:23] Speaker 4: There seems to be a war transpiring in the digital
[34:26] Speaker 4: space that is bleeding into the real world, and so
[34:29] Speaker 4: you get caught up in the middle of it. That's
[34:30] Speaker 4: when events happen, Things go haywire, and you kind of
[34:35] Speaker 4: get launched into what is ultimately like the start start
[34:38] Speaker 4: of the game. And that's I'm a little bit after that,
[34:41] Speaker 4: but I do think it's again I think of Cyberslouth,
[34:45] Speaker 4: where Cybersluth was much faster about getting you into the
[34:49] Speaker 4: story and getting you invested in it, and I do
[34:53] Speaker 4: think that is a strength that Cybersluth has over Time
[34:56] Speaker 4: Stranger for me right now in my own personal feelings
[34:59] Speaker 4: on it. But I do think all the quality of life,
[35:03] Speaker 4: all the digitmon building, all the RPG systems, I really
[35:07] Speaker 4: like Time Strangers options. The only thing I felt this
[35:10] Speaker 4: during SGF, and I've heard that is transpired out across
[35:14] Speaker 4: the rest of the game. Bosses are a little spongy,
[35:18] Speaker 4: a little a little just hit them a bunch and
[35:22] Speaker 4: wait for it to close out, and you kind of
[35:25] Speaker 4: figure it out and by the time you figure it out,
[35:26] Speaker 4: you're like, okay, so I just got to do this
[35:28] Speaker 4: over and over and over again. That happened when I
[35:30] Speaker 4: was playing at SGF the boss there. It was like, Okay,
[35:32] Speaker 4: I figured out what his weakness is, and I just
[35:35] Speaker 4: got to beat him down, and it takes like a
[35:38] Speaker 4: little bit longer than you want it to. I do
[35:41] Speaker 4: like a digitmond. They have some interesting ways of handling
[35:45] Speaker 4: weaknesses where you have kind of a typal wheel. So
[35:48] Speaker 4: you have fire Are they weak to fire? Are they
[35:50] Speaker 4: weak to ice? Are they weak to that sort of stuff?
[35:52] Speaker 4: But you also have a triangle of I think it's
[35:55] Speaker 4: is it data virus vaccine, where it's kind of at
[36:00] Speaker 4: the fire emblem triangle where one will kind of supersede
[36:04] Speaker 4: the other. So you can get double effective the way
[36:06] Speaker 4: that you can in Pokemon. If you get double type
[36:08] Speaker 4: effective attacks on certain Pokemon, you can get double effect
[36:12] Speaker 4: and do even more damage if you get the right
[36:14] Speaker 4: type matchup and the elemental But also it acts as
[36:18] Speaker 4: a way for you to be like, Okay, well I
[36:19] Speaker 4: don't have any digimon that can use the elemental attack
[36:25] Speaker 4: that I need to use right now or the specific type,
[36:27] Speaker 4: but I do have a type advantage on this Digitmon,
[36:30] Speaker 4: so I can still get some advantage out of this
[36:32] Speaker 4: and kind of eke my way out to a victory.
[36:34] Speaker 4: And that does reflect back on you. Obviously. If you
[36:37] Speaker 4: show up and you only have a team full of
[36:39] Speaker 4: virus digmon, probably going to get walloped if a vaccine
[36:43] Speaker 4: shows up. So that's Digitmon. I think it's really well
[36:50] Speaker 4: timed too. Obviously ZA is right around the corner, and
[36:53] Speaker 4: that's on you know, Boster. I don't know why I
[36:57] Speaker 4: have to keep explaining that to people. I thought it
[36:59] Speaker 4: would be self explain an the tory, but I've had
[37:01] Speaker 4: meetings here a game Informer where someone has been like, Eric,
[37:04] Speaker 4: what are you talking about when you say ZA, And
[37:06] Speaker 4: I was like, it's it's the.
[37:09] Speaker 2: It's the the Joe Merrick of Sarah By or Sarah
[37:14] Speaker 2: b however you pronounce it. He said he was mad
[37:16] Speaker 2: because he saw an ad. I think he's in the UK.
[37:18] Speaker 2: But they didn't say Z to A. They said Z
[37:21] Speaker 2: to A. Oh, oh we're not localizing it.
[37:25] Speaker 4: Now.
[37:25] Speaker 1: That's a blunder, mate, straight straight miss and you got
[37:31] Speaker 1: your you got family over there of a tip, you
[37:34] Speaker 1: got an authentic.
[37:34] Speaker 2: They actually just moved back, so oh balls, yeh, bollocks.
[37:40] Speaker 1: I don't have I don't have the the past anymore.
[37:47] Speaker 2: The Seaward pass uh No.
[37:52] Speaker 4: But I think I think it's really well timed. Uh
[37:54] Speaker 4: I think a lot of people got their RPG phil
[37:57] Speaker 4: earlier in the year with stuff like claip Scare, and
[38:00] Speaker 4: now they're going, well, you know, I'm kind of eager
[38:03] Speaker 4: to play something a bit Meteor again and a bit
[38:08] Speaker 4: Media Lands, and it's well times, so I'm happy, you know.
[38:14] Speaker 4: I like seeing Digimon show up and actually get some recognition,
[38:18] Speaker 4: because again, I'm not a digmon kid, but you know,
[38:22] Speaker 4: healthy competition is good for all and Digitmon are fun.
[38:25] Speaker 4: They're goofy in a way that I really appreciate, and
[38:28] Speaker 4: I do genuinely think if you've ever said, I want
[38:31] Speaker 4: like a more complex monster taming system, but I don't
[38:34] Speaker 4: want to go all the way into shimmying on my tense,
[38:35] Speaker 4: especially like Nocturn and stuff like that could get very difficult.
[38:38] Speaker 4: This feels like a good half step. It's still maybe
[38:42] Speaker 4: slightly on the easier side, but this feels like something
[38:45] Speaker 4: that anyone could kind of pick up and play and
[38:48] Speaker 4: enjoy and still find a lot of really good stuff
[38:50] Speaker 4: to dig into. It's not going to feel too overwhelming,
[38:54] Speaker 4: but you're going to get a lot of rewarding stuff
[38:56] Speaker 4: out of the systems at play here that I think
[38:58] Speaker 4: elevate the and especially the monster taming up and above
[39:03] Speaker 4: what most others offer. So it's it's been a surprise
[39:07] Speaker 4: for me and one that I hope I continue to
[39:08] Speaker 4: find time for as the year goes on.
[39:11] Speaker 2: It is nice to hear someone talk about the game
[39:14] Speaker 2: in the opposite of what Pokemon is. Where Pokemon is like, yeah,
[39:17] Speaker 2: it's like, this one's not I mean, it's kind of
[39:20] Speaker 2: okay and doesn't look good, but it is Pokemon, so
[39:22] Speaker 2: we're gonna play it, whereas this one you're like, it's
[39:24] Speaker 2: fun and it likes it and like, even though it's digimon,
[39:28] Speaker 2: it's like a good game, Like you don't get that
[39:30] Speaker 2: part out of your mind and then go play because
[39:32] Speaker 2: it's good, not just the aesthetics aren't the justification, which.
[39:35] Speaker 4: It has made me want to go back and maybe
[39:37] Speaker 4: try some digitmon stuff that I missed over the years.
[39:39] Speaker 4: I know Digitmon Survived came out and there were people
[39:41] Speaker 4: who were really into that one, but I remember that
[39:43] Speaker 4: was the visual novel, right, It's like have visual novel
[39:46] Speaker 4: half Tactics game, which is usually like just catnip for
[39:49] Speaker 4: me specifically, but.
[39:50] Speaker 2: Yeah, such a funny combo. It's like the least game
[39:53] Speaker 2: and then the most game.
[39:55] Speaker 4: Yeah, it's like it's overwhelmed two different people at the
[39:59] Speaker 4: same time. But that is the venn diagram of me.
[40:01] Speaker 4: When we get to to go to you just wait
[40:02] Speaker 4: for me to start talking about one hundred line, which
[40:05] Speaker 4: is in my.
[40:05] Speaker 2: Top three for this time if you can find the
[40:08] Speaker 2: pr for them, because we didn't. I don't think we
[40:10] Speaker 2: got codes.
[40:10] Speaker 4: For that for one hundred line.
[40:12] Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think any of us have played it
[40:14] Speaker 2: in that. I played Donan Rompu one in two last
[40:19] Speaker 2: year and I was like, oh, these are totally up
[40:21] Speaker 2: my alley. But I anyways, we'll talk. Well, I'll message
[40:25] Speaker 2: you later.
[40:26] Speaker 4: One hundred line has a moment that's really frustrating because
[40:30] Speaker 4: I think it is one of the most audacious moments
[40:32] Speaker 4: I've ever seen attempted in a video game. Like Hideo
[40:35] Speaker 4: Kajima wishes he could pull something off like this, but like,
[40:39] Speaker 4: you have to legitimately play thirty hours of a game
[40:44] Speaker 4: to get to it, and it's already thirty hours of
[40:47] Speaker 4: a game that I think a lot of people might
[40:50] Speaker 4: just jump off of because it is largely a mix
[40:54] Speaker 4: of adventure game slash, visual novel and tactics, and that's
[41:00] Speaker 4: a very hard sell for a lot of people, and
[41:03] Speaker 4: I get it. But the payoff if you stick with it,
[41:07] Speaker 4: will just absolutely blow your mind and then you will
[41:10] Speaker 4: experience what is quite possibly one of the most unique
[41:12] Speaker 4: games I've played this side of Thirteen Sentinels.
[41:15] Speaker 2: So exciting. Yeah. Yeah. My only concern is that I
[41:20] Speaker 2: think I was unemployed when I played Doc.
[41:23] Speaker 4: Romp but one and two and the best state of
[41:25] Speaker 4: mind to be in for Duncan Ramp.
[41:26] Speaker 2: But that's how I found the time to get through them.
[41:29] Speaker 2: I was just like, I'm not working right now, so
[41:31] Speaker 2: I'm just gonna just kind of through.
[41:34] Speaker 4: You've played one and two, but you haven't played V
[41:35] Speaker 4: three yet.
[41:37] Speaker 2: Uh no, Well, so I played two and it was like,
[41:40] Speaker 2: literally like the week after I finished two is when
[41:42] Speaker 2: the game Fourer started back up and all play V
[41:45] Speaker 2: three work can play games for work?
[41:48] Speaker 4: Yeah, I forget about that. I go play V three,
[41:51] Speaker 4: tell Matt.
[41:52] Speaker 2: I said, Also not, I played the other two on
[41:54] Speaker 2: steam Deck and V three is not steam Deck verified.
[41:57] Speaker 4: It should be now. But also I think the deck
[41:59] Speaker 4: is dense collection if I remember right, has them all
[42:02] Speaker 4: on switch and playable, and I think that's probably the
[42:05] Speaker 4: best way of doing it nowadays.
[42:07] Speaker 2: I'll do it there.
[42:09] Speaker 1: Well cool, Well, Charles, were actually gonna kick it over
[42:13] Speaker 1: to you. You've been playing a game that ever since
[42:16] Speaker 1: I learned about it, it's been on my radar and
[42:17] Speaker 1: I'm dying.
[42:18] Speaker 2: To play it. Art style looks really great.
[42:21] Speaker 1: Uh. And and the fact that it's a rogue light.
[42:23] Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, okay, let's let me hear more. Uh,
[42:26] Speaker 1: tell me about Absolum Absolom.
[42:29] Speaker 2: I'm gonna crack open my red Bull for this long.
[42:31] Speaker 4: Let's go.
[42:32] Speaker 2: We're going real. These are real gamer hours. Oh damn,
[42:37] Speaker 2: he's sipping it. He's sipping it. So if you don't
[42:42] Speaker 2: know what this game is, it is published by dot Emu. Okay,
[42:48] Speaker 2: I'll try to find They're having like a crazy good year.
[42:51] Speaker 2: I don't. I don't think I knew who dot emu was,
[42:53] Speaker 2: and then this year it's like Marvel Cosbiguration, Absolum.
[42:57] Speaker 4: Did you never play a Streets of Age four? I
[43:00] Speaker 4: knew of it, but I never played it. Oh, if
[43:02] Speaker 4: you like beat them ups. Streets of Rage four is
[43:05] Speaker 4: a good time.
[43:06] Speaker 2: I think, I think what I like about them this
[43:07] Speaker 2: year they also I think published.
[43:10] Speaker 6: Yeah yeah Shadows Revenge Yeah yeah yeah, uh okay and
[43:17] Speaker 6: developed by dott Emu, Guard Crush Games and Super Monks.
[43:23] Speaker 2: Yeah. So I I it wasn't like super on my radar,
[43:25] Speaker 2: and I did play it at Summer Game Fest and
[43:27] Speaker 2: I was like, I don't know what this is, uh,
[43:28] Speaker 2: and it was really cool. So it's like a beat
[43:32] Speaker 2: them up rogue light, but it's like fantasy theme, so
[43:35] Speaker 2: it's not I mean, the Streets of Rage is the
[43:37] Speaker 2: kind of like when I think of a beat them
[43:39] Speaker 2: up game, it is that, or it's like a Turtles game,
[43:41] Speaker 2: or it's like you're literally on a city street and
[43:45] Speaker 2: you're picking up trash cans and throwing them at people,
[43:47] Speaker 2: and you're eating pizza that goes on the ground. Not
[43:49] Speaker 2: so you hear yourself. This is like we're gonna take
[43:52] Speaker 2: all of that kind of gameplay style and put it
[43:54] Speaker 2: in like a high fantasy setting. So your main characters
[43:57] Speaker 2: are like you got an Elf, you got a dwarf,
[43:59] Speaker 2: you have a frog is a wizard, and then you
[44:02] Speaker 2: have a like clockwork assassin I think they call her
[44:06] Speaker 2: who's voiced by Carlac, the voice of Karlac and b
[44:08] Speaker 2: Skate three. Oh cool. Yeah, I don't know the full cast,
[44:11] Speaker 2: but I was. Also my theory was that the main
[44:14] Speaker 2: character might be Amelia Tyler, who I think is the
[44:16] Speaker 2: narrator in Balders K three, but I'd have to check.
[44:19] Speaker 2: Don't quote me on that anyway. So I really like
[44:22] Speaker 2: fantasy stuff. I'm kind of like a recent I always
[44:25] Speaker 2: liked it growing up. Recently I've gotten really into D
[44:27] Speaker 2: and D, so it's like very much my aesthetic of choice.
[44:31] Speaker 2: The art in this game is so good. It looks
[44:33] Speaker 2: like a Saturday Morning cartoon. And they did just confirm
[44:35] Speaker 2: they are making an animated series based off of the game,
[44:39] Speaker 2: like a week or two ago, which like makes sense
[44:42] Speaker 2: because they should and yeah, I I The thing that
[44:47] Speaker 2: I think makes it interesting is it's a roguelike. As
[44:50] Speaker 2: you're going through, you're picking up rituals, which are like
[44:53] Speaker 2: just your power ups in the game. They're gonna give
[44:55] Speaker 2: you elemental bonuses or make it so you know, your
[44:59] Speaker 2: jump attacks do more dan et cetera, et cetera. But
[45:02] Speaker 2: also every run there's like a bunch of branching paths.
[45:05] Speaker 2: It kind of reminds me of Dead Cells. I can't
[45:07] Speaker 2: think of a more recent example, but like sure, when
[45:09] Speaker 2: you do a run of Dead Cells, it's like you
[45:10] Speaker 2: can choose to go this way or that way, and
[45:12] Speaker 2: then you're you're getting to choose where you go, and
[45:14] Speaker 2: it's it's on a smaller scal than Dead Cells is
[45:17] Speaker 2: because I think you're still ending up at the same
[45:19] Speaker 2: like first Boss, Second Boss, et cetera. But there is
[45:23] Speaker 2: a lot of like decision making every run of Like
[45:25] Speaker 2: I had a hard time with this, you know, Mini Boss,
[45:27] Speaker 2: I'm gonna do this other one, so that's cool. I
[45:33] Speaker 2: like it a lot. Matt Miller, our veteran chief, also
[45:36] Speaker 2: liked it, and he reviewed it, and I think his
[45:38] Speaker 2: review should be up today, but he gave it a
[45:40] Speaker 2: nine out of ten.
[45:41] Speaker 4: Wow, which is very exciting.
[45:42] Speaker 2: He really liked it. He's also a D and D guy.
[45:46] Speaker 2: He told me that he he wrote a whole D
[45:50] Speaker 2: and D setting. I don't know if I've mentioned this
[45:52] Speaker 2: on the podcast before. He wrote like two hundred pages
[45:54] Speaker 2: of a D and D like continent campaign setting and
[45:58] Speaker 2: then had it bound and handed it to his players
[46:00] Speaker 2: before they started playing a game like he did. He
[46:03] Speaker 2: did Capitol w world building, so he's he's very much
[46:06] Speaker 2: this is like his element. And yeah, I think I
[46:10] Speaker 2: think if I had any I'm not that far into it.
[46:13] Speaker 2: I've played like a few hours. I think the thing
[46:17] Speaker 2: that this game is going to struggle with is launching
[46:19] Speaker 2: so close to Haites two because there are different styles
[46:21] Speaker 2: of games, but it is still like the same kind
[46:24] Speaker 2: of idea. It's still like an action game. And I
[46:28] Speaker 2: think the mike qualm with this game is in a
[46:33] Speaker 2: lot of roguelikes, I feel like it's very easy to
[46:36] Speaker 2: have two runs that are very, very different, and I
[46:40] Speaker 2: feel like the upgrades in this game don't do a
[46:43] Speaker 2: ton to change your like base move set. So you're
[46:45] Speaker 2: picking different characters you can play as, and they all do.
[46:48] Speaker 1: You have like the access to them from the very start.
[46:51] Speaker 1: You start with all the characters too.
[46:53] Speaker 2: And then you get the other one. So I have
[46:55] Speaker 2: three of the four, but I played as the Frog Wizard.
[46:58] Speaker 2: I had like a preview build earlier. But yeah, and
[47:02] Speaker 2: they have they have like light attacks and they have
[47:04] Speaker 2: heavy attacks, and that's cool, and that's basically about it.
[47:08] Speaker 2: They it changes a little bit situationally, but you don't
[47:12] Speaker 2: have that wide of a move set, and most of
[47:14] Speaker 2: the time the rituals you get, which are like the
[47:15] Speaker 2: power ups, It'll be like when you dodge perfectly, you
[47:18] Speaker 2: get like a ring of fire around you, or your
[47:21] Speaker 2: heavy attack does win damage if you hit people enough times.
[47:24] Speaker 2: So it's nice and it's like you feel a little
[47:26] Speaker 2: more powerful, but it's it is relying more on I
[47:30] Speaker 2: think skill than build than some other rope likes do,
[47:34] Speaker 2: where like if you're if you're playing Hades two and
[47:36] Speaker 2: you just have like you can get some like crazy
[47:38] Speaker 2: builds going on, like just your cast for this run
[47:40] Speaker 2: or just your special or whatever and just kind of
[47:42] Speaker 2: like blaze through things without having to think about it
[47:45] Speaker 2: this much. Absolom is like, oh, you do need to
[47:47] Speaker 2: figure out how to parry and how to dodge, and uh,
[47:51] Speaker 2: like you have to pay attention to the whole time. Yeah,
[47:53] Speaker 2: better term.
[47:55] Speaker 1: There's no like build where you can put the dead
[47:57] Speaker 1: cells turrets down and just I will I.
[48:00] Speaker 2: Wish I could do a Garlic Vampire Survivors build man
[48:03] Speaker 2: where just like people near me just kind of melt. No, yeah,
[48:08] Speaker 2: not like so, and I don't think it's bad, but again,
[48:12] Speaker 2: it's hard to play a game that's a satisfying as
[48:13] Speaker 2: Haites two and then come to this where I'm like, oh,
[48:15] Speaker 2: I'm kind of I was never like stuck on a
[48:17] Speaker 2: boss in Hades too, like maybe the final bosses at
[48:20] Speaker 2: the end of the run or whatever I would have
[48:21] Speaker 2: to do like a few times. This is one where
[48:23] Speaker 2: it's like, I have yet to beat this first area
[48:27] Speaker 2: boss like eight or nine runs in because I'm not
[48:32] Speaker 2: like really gaining that much power between runs. It has
[48:35] Speaker 2: more to do with me just like having to learn
[48:37] Speaker 2: what it is and react appropriately, which is fine, and
[48:39] Speaker 2: I think some people will prefer that. They'll like that
[48:42] Speaker 2: it's not getting too fluffed up by the power ups
[48:45] Speaker 2: and stuff. But yeah, they're also is co op, which
[48:48] Speaker 2: is nice. I think it's only two player though. Cool.
[48:53] Speaker 2: There is local and there's online, and they have a
[48:55] Speaker 2: cool system if you're doing online where it will match
[48:59] Speaker 2: the story content to the less progressed player. So if
[49:04] Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, that's ten levels deep and someone else
[49:07] Speaker 2: is like three levels deep, we'll get all the cut
[49:08] Speaker 2: scenes for the three levels deep person, but we'll still
[49:12] Speaker 2: keep our like builds and abilities and stuff as we
[49:14] Speaker 2: go through it. Yeah. I Oh the other thing I
[49:18] Speaker 2: really like is there's like a pary button, so if
[49:20] Speaker 2: you dash towards someone when they attack, then you like
[49:22] Speaker 2: parry them perfectly, but you also have like your heavy attack,
[49:25] Speaker 2: and if your heavy attack hits them when they do
[49:28] Speaker 2: their attack, it's like a super stagger. I can't remember
[49:31] Speaker 2: what the word for it is, but that feels really
[49:33] Speaker 2: cool to like time it really perfectly. And it's hard,
[49:37] Speaker 2: but that's like one of the most satisfying things in
[49:40] Speaker 2: the game is trying to get that timed right. Yeah. Yeah,
[49:44] Speaker 2: I mean.
[49:46] Speaker 1: The world building in particular, I mean you talked about
[49:49] Speaker 1: it already a little bit, but is there anything in
[49:53] Speaker 1: particular with the characters or like the setting that really
[49:56] Speaker 1: kind of kind of anchorsy to what's going on in
[50:01] Speaker 1: the game, or is it more like, oh, this is
[50:03] Speaker 1: just like really pretty high fantasy with you know, the
[50:06] Speaker 1: frog wizard and and like if you like those archetypes,
[50:09] Speaker 1: you know, then you're going to be interested. Is there
[50:12] Speaker 1: like any big like I guess poll besides that kind
[50:16] Speaker 1: of thematic stuff.
[50:18] Speaker 2: I think Matt was a little more into it than
[50:20] Speaker 2: I was. I I admittedly wasn't like sitting there and
[50:26] Speaker 2: like really reading the dialogue exchanges, but they weren't really
[50:29] Speaker 2: grabbing me necessarily. I liked that. I think what he
[50:33] Speaker 2: called it is it's the platonic ideal of like a
[50:35] Speaker 2: fantasy beat him up where I think it is. It's
[50:38] Speaker 2: not so boring that it like doesn't make sense or
[50:41] Speaker 2: that you shouldn't pay attention to it. But it also
[50:43] Speaker 2: to me was like, Yeah, there's an evil ruler who
[50:46] Speaker 2: looks at the tower and you're all like children of
[50:49] Speaker 2: this one goddess like person, and that's how you She
[50:53] Speaker 2: like revives you every time you die. Basically, Yeah, and
[50:57] Speaker 2: I like it, but I wouldn't I wouldn't say it's
[50:59] Speaker 2: not like a Hades where I'm like really invested in
[51:01] Speaker 2: all the characters and there's like there's like quests and
[51:07] Speaker 2: stuff with it, which is interesting. So you like meet
[51:09] Speaker 2: someone that'll ask you to go to a place or
[51:10] Speaker 2: do a thing and that'll like inform which direction you're going,
[51:14] Speaker 2: like what route you take, which is cool. Yeah, but
[51:17] Speaker 2: I also haven't beaten the first boss, so I don't
[51:18] Speaker 2: know if like maybe it opens up a little bit more,
[51:20] Speaker 2: it gets a bit more specific, But yeah, so I
[51:24] Speaker 2: would say the story itself is not a huge pull
[51:27] Speaker 2: for me it has more to do.
[51:30] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the vibes still look great.
[51:32] Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, I was going to say, like, I'm
[51:34] Speaker 4: already really interested because I love the capcom D and
[51:39] Speaker 4: D brawlers from back in the day that like Chronicles
[51:41] Speaker 4: Mastara and stuff like that. Those have always been like
[51:44] Speaker 4: a secret Yeah, those have been hidden gems of the
[51:47] Speaker 4: beat them up genre for a long time, and specifically
[51:49] Speaker 4: because they're high fantasy, they're a little bit different and
[51:52] Speaker 4: stuff like that. Uh, and this looks like it might
[51:56] Speaker 4: hit similar notes for people, and so that has me
[51:59] Speaker 4: pretty excited for Chack in this game out.
[52:01] Speaker 2: I also like how it's like you get you're with
[52:03] Speaker 2: the playable characters. You're getting some fantasy tropes, but they're
[52:06] Speaker 2: like just different enough that I think it's like cool. So,
[52:08] Speaker 2: like Galandra is like my favorite character. She's the elf
[52:11] Speaker 2: and she has a huge sword on her back and
[52:14] Speaker 2: she only pulls it out for her heavy attack, which
[52:16] Speaker 2: I for some reason that's so cool is she has
[52:19] Speaker 2: she's mostly just boxing a puncheg with her fists, but
[52:21] Speaker 2: if there's like shit's going down, she's gonna pull out
[52:24] Speaker 2: the sword and she's gonna do some big attack or
[52:26] Speaker 2: there's also like magic attacks that'll have that'll use this
[52:30] Speaker 2: special thing too. Carl is a dwarf, Alex, you like dwarfs, right,
[52:35] Speaker 2: I don't know why I thought so. He's a dwarf, okay,
[52:41] Speaker 2: I I think you had mentioned it.
[52:42] Speaker 1: Before, But are like my from the earth.
[52:46] Speaker 2: You know, he does a lot of uh he's he's
[52:49] Speaker 2: a lot quicker than I thought it would be. And
[52:51] Speaker 2: he does a lot of like really short kind of
[52:53] Speaker 2: boxing moves, and he has a gun like magic moves
[52:58] Speaker 2: are him like shooting or like he launches a grenade
[53:00] Speaker 2: or something. But his heavy attack doesn't even use the gun.
[53:02] Speaker 2: It's like a big head butt. So he's like really
[53:05] Speaker 2: good at like juggling people, and he was like surprising.
[53:09] Speaker 2: I was ready for him to be like a slower,
[53:10] Speaker 2: heavier character, but I think Galandra is slower than he is,
[53:14] Speaker 2: and he's very like, I don't know, cool. I like him.
[53:18] Speaker 4: I didn't know you were such a dirty boy lover
[53:22] Speaker 4: there van Ak and the Orcs and the and the
[53:24] Speaker 4: dwarves getting down in the earth like that.
[53:26] Speaker 1: You gotta yeah, that's my my people.
[53:29] Speaker 4: Uh huh yeah, gotta build a commander for you then
[53:32] Speaker 4: to match that match that energy.
[53:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, Magic Commander, Yeah, Yah.
[53:37] Speaker 2: Of the Earth.
[53:38] Speaker 4: There's there's some very there's some good like goblin orc
[53:41] Speaker 4: type stuff that you can do and magice.
[53:44] Speaker 1: I love goblins orcs.
[53:47] Speaker 2: Did you Alvatar Last Servender Alex?
[53:52] Speaker 1: I have watched the first like fifteen episodes, I think. Okay,
[53:56] Speaker 1: so before I got this, I made it to the
[53:57] Speaker 1: fire Temple or fire shrine or something is on top
[54:00] Speaker 1: of a big tower.
[54:02] Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, and they're trying to break it down while
[54:03] Speaker 4: he's talking to Zuku not Zuko.
[54:07] Speaker 1: Yea, as far as I've made it.
[54:08] Speaker 4: He's trying to connect to his Roku. Yeah it is.
[54:13] Speaker 4: It is Roku. It's the same name. It always reads
[54:15] Speaker 4: me out where they're like Avatar Roku and I picture
[54:17] Speaker 4: like the little set top box.
[54:21] Speaker 2: Yeah. Anyways, I was gonna say, I don't know if
[54:23] Speaker 2: you were like, oh, I would be an earth Bender
[54:24] Speaker 2: because that just feels like the same type.
[54:26] Speaker 1: Of I I like. Yeah, and a lot of those
[54:31] Speaker 1: kind of games like I like, I like when people
[54:33] Speaker 1: will manipulate Earth.
[54:34] Speaker 2: I used to play a City of Heroes and.
[54:38] Speaker 1: I had a Earth controller for a while.
[54:41] Speaker 4: Like tra from Teen Titans kind of stuff.
[54:45] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I like other.
[54:47] Speaker 1: My mains are usually other elements and like superhero kind
[54:51] Speaker 1: of stuff.
[54:52] Speaker 2: You know, yeah, what's your if? But if we're like firewater, Earth, air,
[54:55] Speaker 2: which of those who identify more with man maybe Earth?
[55:01] Speaker 1: Actually maybe Earth? Maybe it is Earth? I I love
[55:07] Speaker 1: you know what, Now I'm I'm realizing about myself. I
[55:10] Speaker 1: love Gollum from Uh Pokemon Wokemon.
[55:18] Speaker 2: No, you're right, Yeah, yeah, that's correct.
[55:19] Speaker 4: Can you imagine if Gollum came out of a Voca
[55:21] Speaker 4: ball that'd be insane.
[55:24] Speaker 2: Yeah. I gotta add an alternate evolution for Graveler or
[55:27] Speaker 2: it becomes Smeegel. Yeah.
[55:28] Speaker 4: I was watching these two guys fight their Pokemon and
[55:31] Speaker 4: one of them just bit the other one's finger off.
[55:33] Speaker 4: It was crazy.
[55:34] Speaker 1: My my second favorite those usually like honestly, it's probably fire,
[55:38] Speaker 1: but I love I love like fire and Earth a
[55:40] Speaker 1: camera rupt.
[55:42] Speaker 4: I have great news for you. I have incredible news
[55:46] Speaker 4: for you. In the Legend of Cora, the sequel series
[55:49] Speaker 4: to Avatar, the Last Airbender, Bolin, who powerver Bound, one
[55:54] Speaker 4: of my favorite characters in all v Avatar, Uh learns
[55:57] Speaker 4: how to lava bend Uh and it is that's sick
[56:01] Speaker 4: as hell. It is the coolest thing you have ever seen.
[56:05] Speaker 1: Yeah, Like I was a big, like like.
[56:08] Speaker 4: King kind of vibes, like pound the ground and like
[56:12] Speaker 4: make walls and then shove them forward and stuff like that.
[56:15] Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I like that.
[56:16] Speaker 1: Kind of stuff like Earth tomb, you know, rock tomb
[56:20] Speaker 1: type of stuff. Yeah, big fan, big fan fan of
[56:24] Speaker 1: the Earth, but Earth, but not like in a green
[56:28] Speaker 1: way and just like I like rocks rock way.
[56:31] Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, I like rock. Yeah. Well cool, that's absolom. Yeah,
[56:38] Speaker 2: what a weird transition. Also, yeah, I don't know if
[56:41] Speaker 2: we're saying the name right. I'm guessing absolum absolom.
[56:45] Speaker 1: It could be either like absolve absolute. Anyways, let's get
[56:52] Speaker 1: into our final topic of the show. We each brought
[56:56] Speaker 1: a few games to talk about to recommend to play through,
[57:01] Speaker 1: you know, primarily October, but the Fall in general. We
[57:04] Speaker 1: got some cozy, we got some horror. It's really like
[57:07] Speaker 1: our favorite Fall games. I guess you could say that's
[57:11] Speaker 1: what's gonna be in the headline, but Charles, I'm gonna.
[57:15] Speaker 2: Toss you to kick us off. Okay, So what we
[57:18] Speaker 2: were talking about like our favorite Fall games and we're like,
[57:21] Speaker 2: this is your idea, wasn't it? I think I said, uh,
[57:26] Speaker 2: fall games just so because I don't play a lot
[57:29] Speaker 2: of horror games.
[57:29] Speaker 4: Yeah, we talked about doing horror games because it's also
[57:32] Speaker 4: October at the time of this recording.
[57:35] Speaker 1: Yes, we're like the people left on this podcast.
[57:38] Speaker 2: We don't.
[57:39] Speaker 4: Oh, hey, hey, speak for yourself, you do. Yeah, you know,
[57:44] Speaker 4: I'm bringing some horror, don't worry.
[57:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, I hope somebody is. But yeah, I'm gonna I'm
[57:49] Speaker 2: gonna get this out of the way. And this is
[57:51] Speaker 2: kind of like the free space. If there's a bingo
[57:53] Speaker 2: card of of Fall games, Knight in the Woods is
[57:55] Speaker 2: the free the free space. Yeah, yeah, is quintessential horror
[58:00] Speaker 2: or not horror sorry, whichisential fall Again, it's a little spooky.
[58:03] Speaker 2: It's a little spooky. It's it takes place around that time.
[58:06] Speaker 2: I feel like the main character being like a black
[58:08] Speaker 2: cat also fits the like Halloween kind of vibe. To me.
[58:13] Speaker 2: Fall games are like a little bit nostalgic. It's like
[58:19] Speaker 2: being outside. I'm picturing like the leaves changing.
[58:22] Speaker 4: It's the Midwest emo of seasons, you know.
[58:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, and I like that. What's what's more Midwest Emo?
[58:29] Speaker 2: Then life is strange, which is my most Yeah, I
[58:33] Speaker 2: I don't. I can't tell you what it is specific
[58:36] Speaker 2: about Life is Strange that feels fall. I do think
[58:38] Speaker 2: it starts at the beginning of a school year, but
[58:41] Speaker 2: there's definitely something about the back to school season that
[58:44] Speaker 2: is like distinctly fall because it happens at the same time.
[58:46] Speaker 2: But just I can't, I can't unravel the two in
[58:49] Speaker 2: my head, and it's it's kind of cozy, but it's
[58:54] Speaker 2: I don't know, it's a very like grounded, like down
[58:58] Speaker 2: to earth story that is like what I think of
[58:59] Speaker 2: what I think a fall.
[59:01] Speaker 4: Well, so life is strange. It's kind of weird because
[59:03] Speaker 4: I would say specifically life is strange one, or life
[59:08] Speaker 4: is strange, Life is strange, true colors, because I think
[59:10] Speaker 4: I think two is also very very good. I just
[59:13] Speaker 4: wouldn't necessarily associate to within a tumnal vibe, whereas Life
[59:18] Speaker 4: is Strange one. Like you said, there's I remember booting
[59:21] Speaker 4: that game up on a whim basically for the first time,
[59:24] Speaker 4: and there's the scene where you kind of close your
[59:26] Speaker 4: locker and the Sidmatter song is playing in your head
[59:29] Speaker 4: as you walk through the halls, and it's like, oh yeah,
[59:32] Speaker 4: this is like really this is start of the school year.
[59:35] Speaker 4: This is like fall vibes and then life is strange.
[59:38] Speaker 4: True colors you're in this. I think it's a Colorado
[59:40] Speaker 4: town that's out in the mountains, a little bit little
[59:43] Speaker 4: whirl and it's legitimately just gorgeous everywhere. And there's a
[59:48] Speaker 4: bunch of scenes where you're walking around the park and
[59:50] Speaker 4: doing stuff. I love the Larp episode Larp chapter where
[59:54] Speaker 4: you're kind of walking around and it feels very fall,
[59:56] Speaker 4: very cozy. It's almost like Gilmore Gilmore Girls.
[1:00:00] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, great Fall show.
[1:00:03] Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, that's also a very autumnal pick. So yeah,
[1:00:06] Speaker 4: life is strange for sure.
[1:00:08] Speaker 2: Yeah, and they are also Something about them is like
[1:00:10] Speaker 2: if the character in this game could be wearing sweaters
[1:00:12] Speaker 2: the whole game and it would fit. I'm like, that's
[1:00:14] Speaker 2: a fall game to me, and I'm like that's fair.
[1:00:17] Speaker 2: I think Max Coffield, where's a grace hoodie the whole game.
[1:00:20] Speaker 1: It's like, yeah, yeah, yeah, I think this is more
[1:00:24] Speaker 1: of a summer game.
[1:00:25] Speaker 2: But for some reason for me, wait then, why'd you
[1:00:27] Speaker 2: pick it? What do you what are you about to say?
[1:00:29] Speaker 1: Well, for him, let me let me answer my Okay, sorry, okay,
[1:00:33] Speaker 1: go ahead, let me finish my.
[1:00:35] Speaker 2: Sentence, why do you pick it?
[1:00:39] Speaker 3: Start?
[1:00:39] Speaker 1: Well, maybe I was about to tell you, Charles, why
[1:00:41] Speaker 1: I picked it? All right, go ahead, respect your elders.
[1:00:46] Speaker 2: Wow, okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna prefer to you as
[1:00:48] Speaker 2: my elder from now an elder.
[1:00:52] Speaker 1: Yeah, listen, I think it This game reminds me more
[1:00:56] Speaker 1: so of the transition from summer to I think it
[1:01:01] Speaker 1: may be because when it came out, I played it
[1:01:03] Speaker 1: around October, and but it's got It's a very cozy
[1:01:06] Speaker 1: game and like the characters are I think it's one
[1:01:11] Speaker 1: of those games. There's a lot of biomes in it,
[1:01:14] Speaker 1: and so you're kind of going from like the lake
[1:01:17] Speaker 1: to like up to the snow area. You're like getting
[1:01:20] Speaker 1: in like cozy, like it's it's dude, it's killing me
[1:01:25] Speaker 1: how much Okay, I was gonna say it's killing me?
[1:01:26] Speaker 2: How much?
[1:01:27] Speaker 1: You're describing this game without saying the name. No, A
[1:01:31] Speaker 1: short Hike kind of reminds me of like the last
[1:01:34] Speaker 1: week of Summer Slash, like the start of all and
[1:01:37] Speaker 1: you can still warm enough to go camping, but like
[1:01:40] Speaker 1: it's chilly out, you know what I mean, Like it's
[1:01:43] Speaker 1: you're gonna be cold at night, but like during the day.
[1:01:46] Speaker 1: You know, it's just like reminds me of that time
[1:01:49] Speaker 1: of year. And I think the characters, like in particular,
[1:01:54] Speaker 1: like they're going through like it's a kind of a
[1:01:56] Speaker 1: lot of it is like periods of transition and that
[1:01:58] Speaker 1: kind of thing, and I think it just like reminds
[1:02:00] Speaker 1: me of autumn and reminds me of the solstice.
[1:02:05] Speaker 2: That's I think that's correct. I think you you shot
[1:02:08] Speaker 2: yourself on the foot by leading with the summer thing.
[1:02:10] Speaker 2: I think this, Yeah, but it's kind of summer.
[1:02:12] Speaker 4: It's kind of but it's but it's also little, but
[1:02:15] Speaker 4: it's it's definitely I think it's a September October game.
[1:02:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I fully get that.
[1:02:21] Speaker 1: Yeah, like September twenty third, September is fall, right, yes, yeah, yeah,
[1:02:28] Speaker 1: it just doesn't feel like fall because we're all heating
[1:02:31] Speaker 1: ourselves to death right now once we're not in the sauna,
[1:02:36] Speaker 1: like September is technically fall.
[1:02:38] Speaker 2: So yeah, so a short hike is my pick?
[1:02:42] Speaker 1: Good pick, good pick, going back around the rack, around
[1:02:46] Speaker 1: the band.
[1:02:46] Speaker 4: Yeah, let me let me bring some horror into this.
[1:02:49] Speaker 4: I do want to say before the show started, we
[1:02:51] Speaker 4: did ask Wes what his fall game would be. I
[1:02:55] Speaker 4: do want to shout out alan Wake two, which was
[1:02:57] Speaker 4: a very good pick. It's a very, very very solid pick.
[1:03:01] Speaker 4: Alan Wick one I would also thrown there, but honestly, like,
[1:03:03] Speaker 4: just play allen Wick two. I think that one is.
[1:03:05] Speaker 4: I think I'm gonna give you your Autumnal vibes for sure.
[1:03:09] Speaker 4: My pick is a complete pivot and a game that
[1:03:11] Speaker 4: has already been said on here. But I just think
[1:03:14] Speaker 4: that anybody who has not played this game needs to
[1:03:16] Speaker 4: play this game. And that's why I say it. Signalis
[1:03:19] Speaker 4: is one of the best horror games I've played in years,
[1:03:22] Speaker 4: And yeah, it is maybe not a Tumnal, but certainly
[1:03:26] Speaker 4: if you're looking for a horror experience, you can do
[1:03:31] Speaker 4: a lot worse than Signalis, and I don't think you
[1:03:33] Speaker 4: can do much better. So yeah, I think it is
[1:03:38] Speaker 4: an embodiment of like the classic like kind of top
[1:03:41] Speaker 4: down survival horror, dealing with enemies that are kind of
[1:03:45] Speaker 4: unknowable and indecipherable and pursuing you across different screens and
[1:03:51] Speaker 4: doing all the kinds of fun, puzzly stuff that is
[1:03:54] Speaker 4: really good about those early resident evils and stuff like that.
[1:03:56] Speaker 4: I think if you're trying to play a horror game,
[1:03:59] Speaker 4: or maybe you've always wont to play a horror game
[1:04:00] Speaker 4: and you wanted to like understand why people vibe with
[1:04:03] Speaker 4: Resident Evil and Silent Hills so much. Yeah, that's a
[1:04:06] Speaker 4: really good one to get an idea for it. And
[1:04:09] Speaker 4: I also don't think it's that scary. It's it's it's
[1:04:13] Speaker 4: very stomachable. I think if stuff like Silent Hill f
[1:04:16] Speaker 4: is is looking kind of intimidating to you, or like
[1:04:21] Speaker 4: a Silent Hill to remake, and you're like, ha, do
[1:04:23] Speaker 4: you know, I want to play these, but they're like
[1:04:25] Speaker 4: they seem like a little bit too scary for what
[1:04:27] Speaker 4: I want. I think Signalis is going to be the
[1:04:29] Speaker 4: right amount of thrills without like jump scaring you all
[1:04:33] Speaker 4: that often I will zero jump scares. But I never
[1:04:37] Speaker 4: felt like I played that game basically in the dark
[1:04:40] Speaker 4: on a Steam deck and I was fine.
[1:04:42] Speaker 1: So yeah, that game is very management with the horror.
[1:04:45] Speaker 1: There's like a tense atmosphere throughout and like a sort
[1:04:48] Speaker 1: of like desperation, but it never feels oh my god,
[1:04:54] Speaker 1: I can't get through this because it's so scary. That's
[1:04:56] Speaker 1: coming from me, who, like I am a big baby.
[1:05:00] Speaker 1: So I think it's definitely like palatable for a lot
[1:05:02] Speaker 1: of people, and it's it's an incredible survival horror game. Yeah,
[1:05:06] Speaker 1: And I have found like, even though I don't love horror,
[1:05:09] Speaker 1: I do love survival horror as just the game design
[1:05:13] Speaker 1: of survival horror is very sticky and like very fun
[1:05:19] Speaker 1: to interact with, and my Signalis is great.
[1:05:21] Speaker 4: So for years, I've never been able to understand this
[1:05:24] Speaker 4: because I do have a lot of horror games that
[1:05:26] Speaker 4: I've enjoyed over the years, or horror games that I
[1:05:28] Speaker 4: really liked conceptually but could never really put my finger
[1:05:33] Speaker 4: on why I didn't enjoy playing them. So like Amnesia
[1:05:36] Speaker 4: was a big one for me, where when that game
[1:05:37] Speaker 4: came out, I loved the atmosphere of Amnesia, but then
[1:05:41] Speaker 4: I hated playing Amnisia and it wasn't because I was scared,
[1:05:44] Speaker 4: and it wasn't until I finally I never grew up
[1:05:46] Speaker 4: with Resident Evil or anything like that. So when I
[1:05:48] Speaker 4: finally played a game like Signalis, I was like, Oh,
[1:05:52] Speaker 4: this is why it's different is because in this game
[1:05:54] Speaker 4: I'm not doing what I do in Amnesia, or like
[1:05:57] Speaker 4: Soma is legitimately like one of my favorite horror experiences ever,
[1:06:02] Speaker 4: but you kind of just run and hide a lot,
[1:06:04] Speaker 4: and I don't like run and hide games. I don't
[1:06:07] Speaker 4: find them interesting. I don't find that gameplay exciting. I
[1:06:10] Speaker 4: think it only works once and then after you either
[1:06:14] Speaker 4: succeed or fail the segment, you've lost the entire appeal
[1:06:19] Speaker 4: of this of the section for me, And so I
[1:06:23] Speaker 4: do like that. Signalis and other survival horror games say
[1:06:28] Speaker 4: we're going to give you horror. You're going to have
[1:06:30] Speaker 4: like a like a gun in your hand, but the
[1:06:32] Speaker 4: tension is not going to come from just fleeing and
[1:06:35] Speaker 4: hoping you don't get seen. It's gonna be Oh, I
[1:06:38] Speaker 4: have five bullets because I have to carry this key
[1:06:42] Speaker 4: from one room to another, and I had to use
[1:06:44] Speaker 4: up inventory space, so I got to make every single
[1:06:47] Speaker 4: one of these shots count in a room where there
[1:06:49] Speaker 4: are six enemies chasing me. You know, I love stuff
[1:06:54] Speaker 4: like that, and I think that works very very well.
[1:06:57] Speaker 4: I have another horror game that I would pitch in
[1:06:59] Speaker 4: with that well, but I think I'll wait until it
[1:07:01] Speaker 4: comes around on my turn and I'll let it wheel
[1:07:03] Speaker 4: back around. Charles, how about you.
[1:07:07] Speaker 2: Next time I'm gonna pick is my gut said it,
[1:07:13] Speaker 2: and then I was like, I feel like I have
[1:07:14] Speaker 2: to verify some facts about it because I don't I
[1:07:16] Speaker 2: don't remember all details about it. Let's know, it's all
[1:07:18] Speaker 2: the Twilight Princess to me, feels like a Fall game. Yeah.
[1:07:23] Speaker 2: One is there's pumpkins in the main village. I think
[1:07:27] Speaker 2: that was like where my first thought went. But it's
[1:07:30] Speaker 2: also like a little bit spooky, like you're turning into
[1:07:33] Speaker 2: a wolf. There's the whole Twilight realm where everything's kind
[1:07:36] Speaker 2: of scary, and there's something about like the the colors
[1:07:39] Speaker 2: of it that are a little bit it's got that
[1:07:41] Speaker 2: you know, uh, that era of gaming where things were
[1:07:45] Speaker 2: getting like a little desaturated, a little bit brown. That
[1:07:48] Speaker 2: is kind of like feels fall to me. No, that's fair, Yeah,
[1:07:53] Speaker 2: and that's there are parts where it's not fall at all.
[1:07:57] Speaker 2: But I specifically think about the intro of the game,
[1:08:00] Speaker 2: because it's a very long intro, and I've probably played
[1:08:03] Speaker 2: that first section a bunch of times and I actually
[1:08:05] Speaker 2: finished the game like maybe once. Yeah, Twiolet Princess, good pick, good.
[1:08:11] Speaker 1: Pick, Yeah, I think my next pick. Kind of going
[1:08:14] Speaker 1: off of Eric's survival Horror, this is certainly a survival
[1:08:19] Speaker 1: horror game. It's a little more along the lines of
[1:08:26] Speaker 1: it's it's I'm not going to keep its Murder House
[1:08:29] Speaker 1: by puppet Combo, okay, and we we did a we
[1:08:33] Speaker 1: did a replay series, a super replay series of it
[1:08:36] Speaker 1: a couple of halloweens ago, and it is a really
[1:08:41] Speaker 1: fun I mean, it is very scary. It's much scarier
[1:08:44] Speaker 1: than Signalis. But if you like Signalas and you're looking
[1:08:49] Speaker 1: for something less cerebral and more just straightforward horror, very
[1:08:55] Speaker 1: much on the nose, this is the Murder House. It's
[1:08:57] Speaker 1: about like this news crew that go to this house
[1:09:01] Speaker 1: that allegedly used to be like the home of a killer,
[1:09:04] Speaker 1: and you know this is where he took his victims.
[1:09:06] Speaker 1: And you're there kind of filming like a documentary, and
[1:09:09] Speaker 1: slowly things are not really slowly, very quickly things unravel
[1:09:14] Speaker 1: and it's it's just like it's really fun. It's it's
[1:09:18] Speaker 1: meant to be pulpy and cheesy and like corny, almost
[1:09:22] Speaker 1: like a nineties or an eighties slasher. The characters are
[1:09:27] Speaker 1: dumb uh and and are always kind of like stumbling
[1:09:30] Speaker 1: over themselves, but it's it's a it's a fun game.
[1:09:34] Speaker 1: I really like it. And whenever Halloween comes around, I'm
[1:09:37] Speaker 1: never gonna play it again because it's too scary for
[1:09:39] Speaker 1: me to play again.
[1:09:41] Speaker 2: But it's one of those games.
[1:09:42] Speaker 1: If you haven't played it, you should definitely, you should
[1:09:44] Speaker 1: definitely play it.
[1:09:46] Speaker 4: I'm going to throw a crazy one out there. I
[1:09:49] Speaker 4: don't know, it might not be crazy. I was going
[1:09:51] Speaker 4: to say something else, but it's a I don't know.
[1:09:53] Speaker 4: I think that's a little too out there, So I'm
[1:09:54] Speaker 4: going to do this one instead. The outer or not
[1:09:58] Speaker 4: the it's outer? Why else? I think it's the campfire,
[1:10:06] Speaker 4: it's the the tall trees in the starting area. It's
[1:10:12] Speaker 4: but it's also that sense of it's something about the music.
[1:10:14] Speaker 4: I think, really it does do it for me. But
[1:10:16] Speaker 4: it's that sense of sitting back and looking at the stars.
[1:10:21] Speaker 4: You know, a nice little chill breeze is coming in.
[1:10:23] Speaker 4: It's not hot outside anymore. It's cool enough at night
[1:10:26] Speaker 4: that maybe you want to put a fire on and
[1:10:27] Speaker 4: you want to sit back, and you want to sit
[1:10:28] Speaker 4: around a fire and just kind of talk about things
[1:10:31] Speaker 4: and and look at the stars and think about the
[1:10:33] Speaker 4: universe and our place in it. And it just hits
[1:10:37] Speaker 4: all that. Also again, it's it's a straight up banger.
[1:10:41] Speaker 4: I think if I, if I had to if somebody
[1:10:44] Speaker 4: was telling me, you have to make a list of
[1:10:46] Speaker 4: the best games that have come out in your lifespan.
[1:10:50] Speaker 4: I think I think Outer Wilds is really high up there.
[1:10:53] Speaker 4: I I really love that game, and I think it's
[1:10:58] Speaker 4: it's it's a very wonderful experience. And uh yeah, just
[1:11:02] Speaker 4: keep I keep hearing that dun dum dum du no
[1:11:06] Speaker 4: no no no no, dun't like in my head, and
[1:11:08] Speaker 4: it's it's perfect. That's Fall to me is just that
[1:11:12] Speaker 4: maybe because we also love to hang out in the
[1:11:14] Speaker 4: forest and play guitarist, right, van Agin.
[1:11:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, there's something about it too that's like the nature
[1:11:24] Speaker 2: of the game and the nature of Fall of it's
[1:11:26] Speaker 2: like a transitional period where like we're about to hit
[1:11:29] Speaker 2: Like in the case of Fall, it's like the holidays,
[1:11:32] Speaker 2: but also like the New Year, Like, uh, a lot
[1:11:35] Speaker 2: of stuff happens around the end of the year. It's
[1:11:37] Speaker 2: like a big thing. And I feel like the nature
[1:11:39] Speaker 2: of the Outer Wilds And like the time loop that
[1:11:42] Speaker 2: you're in is like we're all anticipating something's about to happen,
[1:11:46] Speaker 2: but this is that quiet moment before it actually does.
[1:11:49] Speaker 4: And it's just ahead of the winter too, and and
[1:11:51] Speaker 4: I've always I mean, we only need to get like
[1:11:53] Speaker 4: really philosophical on this episode of the g I Show.
[1:11:56] Speaker 4: But it's always interesting that the start of a new
[1:11:58] Speaker 4: year happens during the whole dark months of the year,
[1:12:02] Speaker 4: you know, because of the way a calendar works, And
[1:12:04] Speaker 4: I do think it's interesting in that transitory period. Then
[1:12:07] Speaker 4: you think about how Outer Wild's kind of goes into
[1:12:10] Speaker 4: a lot of the unknown, with a lot of hope,
[1:12:13] Speaker 4: with a lot of belief in a greater place in
[1:12:15] Speaker 4: the universe and all that. So I yeah, it's it's
[1:12:19] Speaker 4: such a good game. I seriously I want to go
[1:12:21] Speaker 4: back and eventually I never, like, I think I did
[1:12:26] Speaker 4: the DLC, but I don't think I got the ending
[1:12:29] Speaker 4: that you get after getting the DLC or something like that.
[1:12:33] Speaker 1: I'm mad at myself because I almost finished the Bass
[1:12:36] Speaker 1: game and then something happened and I never finished it,
[1:12:39] Speaker 1: and so now I'm like stuck in limbo where I'm like,
[1:12:41] Speaker 1: I think this might be one of my favorite videos
[1:12:43] Speaker 1: games of all time, but I didn't actually finish it.
[1:12:46] Speaker 2: But I need to.
[1:12:46] Speaker 1: I feel like I need to go back.
[1:12:48] Speaker 2: And restart it.
[1:12:48] Speaker 4: There's a very specific reason why I've never seen I
[1:12:51] Speaker 4: also have not seen the ending of the Bass game
[1:12:53] Speaker 4: because there's a very specific I got to the part
[1:12:56] Speaker 4: where I like, piece together exactly what you have to
[1:12:58] Speaker 4: do to get it, and there's just a very specific
[1:13:01] Speaker 4: mechanic in that game that I'm just terrible out at
[1:13:04] Speaker 4: and you have to be like good at it to
[1:13:05] Speaker 4: do that one thing. And I just have never sat
[1:13:08] Speaker 4: down and been like I'm going to I'm going to
[1:13:10] Speaker 4: accomplish this, I'm going to do this. So it was
[1:13:12] Speaker 4: one where I had to be like, I was moving
[1:13:14] Speaker 4: on to other games for coverage and stuff like that,
[1:13:16] Speaker 4: so I was like, I'll just go watch it on YouTube,
[1:13:19] Speaker 4: I guess, And it bummed me up because I think
[1:13:21] Speaker 4: that was one where I really wanted to experience it
[1:13:23] Speaker 4: in person, but it was just I think there was
[1:13:25] Speaker 4: a solid hour or two I sat there just trying
[1:13:27] Speaker 4: to get through that one part and I was just
[1:13:29] Speaker 4: like the fish, Yes, yeah, I'm so bad at that part.
[1:13:34] Speaker 4: I have no idea why. I just never like I
[1:13:36] Speaker 4: got even to the point where you get through it
[1:13:39] Speaker 4: at least once, but then you have to do it
[1:13:42] Speaker 4: again later for a different reason and in a different
[1:13:44] Speaker 4: way with like higher stakes involved, and it's it's a lot,
[1:13:49] Speaker 4: so Outer Wild's incredible.
[1:13:52] Speaker 1: The Bramble, Yes, yeah, yeah, yes, yeah, I know, that's
[1:13:55] Speaker 1: where I stopped playing.
[1:13:58] Speaker 2: I did finish it, but it was weird. I was
[1:14:01] Speaker 2: playing it on game Pass and it was leaving game
[1:14:04] Speaker 2: Pass the next day, so I was at I was
[1:14:08] Speaker 2: like eleven forty five pm. I'm at my girlfriend's house.
[1:14:14] Speaker 2: She's asleep, and I'm playing like on cloud on my phone,
[1:14:17] Speaker 2: just like desperately trying to be like, I just need
[1:14:20] Speaker 2: to finish the game. And I did get it, but
[1:14:22] Speaker 2: I had like a headache because I've been just been
[1:14:24] Speaker 2: trying to marathon the game before I lost access to it.
[1:14:27] Speaker 2: So maybe that's a stream one day or something. We
[1:14:29] Speaker 2: just spoil the end of the Outer Wilds just all
[1:14:31] Speaker 2: of us actually get to be obviously for the first time.
[1:14:34] Speaker 4: I think that game. I know a lot of people
[1:14:36] Speaker 4: talk about, oh, I would need my memory wipe to
[1:14:40] Speaker 4: re experience this game, and I think there are a
[1:14:42] Speaker 4: few that are like that, Like I've mentioned Thirteen Sentinels
[1:14:44] Speaker 4: before and stuff like that, I think, but I Outer Wilds,
[1:14:48] Speaker 4: I think I would happily go replay that game, even
[1:14:52] Speaker 4: knowing a lot of like the nuance of it just
[1:14:54] Speaker 4: to re experience so much of that exploration and to
[1:14:58] Speaker 4: see the way that world unfolds. It's so special.
[1:15:02] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[1:15:03] Speaker 1: Yeah, and I never played the DLC, so that's kind
[1:15:05] Speaker 1: of waiting for me too.
[1:15:06] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[1:15:06] Speaker 4: I think if you're if you're looking for another one
[1:15:08] Speaker 4: like it too.
[1:15:09] Speaker 1: Uh.
[1:15:10] Speaker 4: It's It's a game I've been meaning to get back
[1:15:12] Speaker 4: to recently, and I think this discussion is going to
[1:15:14] Speaker 4: make me finally pull the trigger. Heaven's Vault by inkle
[1:15:20] Speaker 4: uh Is is kind of a similar game where you're
[1:15:22] Speaker 4: playing a like a crypto linguist. I actually don't know
[1:15:25] Speaker 4: what what the official term is for, but it's you're
[1:15:28] Speaker 4: you're studying the language of a dead species to understand
[1:15:32] Speaker 4: them better, and you end up like traversing the world
[1:15:35] Speaker 4: and learning new ways of accessing things and doing stuff
[1:15:38] Speaker 4: by understanding that language. And it has a lot of
[1:15:40] Speaker 4: the same vibes, and I think it proceeded Outer Wilds
[1:15:43] Speaker 4: by a fair bit and kind of got slept on it.
[1:15:45] Speaker 4: It's one that I've been wanting to go back to.
[1:15:46] Speaker 4: So that's another good out Tumble game. Yeah, is it
[1:15:52] Speaker 4: my gay Charles's game?
[1:15:54] Speaker 2: I go, do you guys want to do? We can
[1:15:56] Speaker 2: do one more like we land on it and then
[1:15:58] Speaker 2: I have like some I can just kind of like
[1:16:00] Speaker 2: rattle off real quick. Yeah, yeah, okay, yeah, the last
[1:16:03] Speaker 2: one I'm gonna like land on. It's kind of weird,
[1:16:08] Speaker 2: and I we're talking about a lot about games you
[1:16:10] Speaker 2: don't remember very well, at least I am. I don't know.
[1:16:15] Speaker 2: Epic Mickey to me is a very fall game. I
[1:16:19] Speaker 2: was just thinking about it recently. I was like so
[1:16:22] Speaker 2: excited for it as a kid, and I never got
[1:16:23] Speaker 2: that far. But it's like it's peak like kid scary,
[1:16:29] Speaker 2: where it's like, yeah, it's kind of dark and it's
[1:16:32] Speaker 2: like a weird world and it's like a a take.
[1:16:35] Speaker 2: I mean, it's called Epic Mickey, which I remember thinking
[1:16:37] Speaker 2: was really funny as a ten year old, Like I
[1:16:39] Speaker 2: can't believe they named the game epic Mickey. But it
[1:16:44] Speaker 2: is like that exact type of like there's not really
[1:16:47] Speaker 2: any steaks, but there's like a real real sense of
[1:16:50] Speaker 2: gloom and doom over the whole thing and something about
[1:16:54] Speaker 2: like the painting. Painting. This is like a school thing again,
[1:16:57] Speaker 2: but like arts and crafts are very fall to me.
[1:17:00] Speaker 1: Yeah that's fair.
[1:17:03] Speaker 2: I haven't actually ever played that. I also I've been
[1:17:07] Speaker 2: going through our magazine archives and it was like the
[1:17:09] Speaker 2: first cover with our new logo. I want to say
[1:17:14] Speaker 2: it was like issue one ninety nine, and that sounds right.
[1:17:17] Speaker 2: Matt Miller wrote the cover story so he would know.
[1:17:22] Speaker 2: I think.
[1:17:22] Speaker 1: My you know, we've been talking about this game a
[1:17:27] Speaker 1: couple of times this last year, Eric and I and
[1:17:31] Speaker 1: I think it's like the perfect Halloween vibe. It's a
[1:17:34] Speaker 1: multiplayer game called Deadlock, and I think it.
[1:17:39] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I was so sure you're about to say
[1:17:41] Speaker 2: dead by Daylight.
[1:17:43] Speaker 1: Well, that's on my list. That's on my list.
[1:17:45] Speaker 4: I told you I can't do the run and hide
[1:17:47] Speaker 4: and that's like what if we made the whole game
[1:17:49] Speaker 4: run and hide competitive? And I was like, no, no,
[1:17:52] Speaker 4: I'm good.
[1:17:54] Speaker 2: I think.
[1:17:54] Speaker 1: Also, well, I'll let Eric go before we rattle off
[1:17:56] Speaker 1: our Oh, I guess we're talking about Deadlock. Yeah yeah,
[1:18:01] Speaker 1: I mean Deadlock is just if you want the ghoulish,
[1:18:07] Speaker 1: spirit focused vibe of like a Halloween game that is
[1:18:14] Speaker 1: like and you don't want like an outright dead by Daylight.
[1:18:16] Speaker 1: I feel like everybody, I'm Dead by Daylight. It's gonna
[1:18:19] Speaker 1: be on every list like this, you know.
[1:18:20] Speaker 2: And I loved it. By Daylight.
[1:18:21] Speaker 1: I've played it a lot over the years, but Deadlock
[1:18:25] Speaker 1: is a different kind of kind of Halloween vibe. We
[1:18:29] Speaker 1: talked about how like a lot of the characters feel like,
[1:18:32] Speaker 1: you know, there's there's the vampire girl, There's like this
[1:18:35] Speaker 1: stalker vampire man. There's his bartender type character who's like
[1:18:40] Speaker 1: he's like straight out of like a horror bar where
[1:18:43] Speaker 1: he's like, you know, his patrons are like ghouls and
[1:18:46] Speaker 1: ghosts and stuff, and that's that's kind of the vibe
[1:18:51] Speaker 1: of all the characters in the game. So even though
[1:18:53] Speaker 1: it's a third person shooter mobia, it has a lot
[1:18:58] Speaker 1: of that kind of Halloween flavor to it.
[1:19:03] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, it is Halloween Town. I think that's like
[1:19:05] Speaker 4: a really good way of putting it. It would be
[1:19:07] Speaker 4: easy to just say, like, oh, Kingdomorts because there's a
[1:19:09] Speaker 4: Halloween Town level and stuff like that, but I think
[1:19:12] Speaker 4: Deadlock has We've talked before about how Valve can do
[1:19:16] Speaker 4: character design really really well, especially I love a lot
[1:19:19] Speaker 4: of Dodo's character designs. I love a lot of TF
[1:19:21] Speaker 4: two's characters designs, obviously Half Life and stuff like that,
[1:19:23] Speaker 4: but I do think Deadlock is not getting a lot
[1:19:28] Speaker 4: of recognition right now, which is kind of a bummer
[1:19:30] Speaker 4: because it is a really inventive idea of this kind
[1:19:35] Speaker 4: of spiritual New York that is like Hell's Kitchen filled
[1:19:40] Speaker 4: with ghouls and goblins and things like that, and it
[1:19:43] Speaker 4: has such a wide visual range that I think it's
[1:19:46] Speaker 4: a really really cool thing. So definitely good pick. Yeah.
[1:19:52] Speaker 4: For my last one. One of my other favorite things
[1:19:55] Speaker 4: about Fall is to like cozy up with a nice book,
[1:19:58] Speaker 4: right and so I wanted to put something that was
[1:19:59] Speaker 4: either in adventure or reading game on hearing a visual
[1:20:02] Speaker 4: novel type thing, and I kind of flipped through a
[1:20:04] Speaker 4: couple in my mind whether that was really old stuff
[1:20:07] Speaker 4: if you have a ds A hotel Dusk would go
[1:20:09] Speaker 4: pretty hard. Was pretty good, and I do love necro
[1:20:14] Speaker 4: Barista is a very slept on one that I think
[1:20:16] Speaker 4: is really good. But I think if I got to
[1:20:19] Speaker 4: pick one, especially for the spooky season, Paranorma site is
[1:20:23] Speaker 4: an incredibly good about let's say, fifteen to twenty hour
[1:20:30] Speaker 4: story about a bunch of people gather in this Japanese
[1:20:35] Speaker 4: town in which a battle royale is going to take place,
[1:20:39] Speaker 4: where they all have these haunted artifacts that have conditions
[1:20:43] Speaker 4: on them. And if you fulfill the conditions, you can
[1:20:45] Speaker 4: kill another artifact user, and if you are the last
[1:20:48] Speaker 4: artifact user standing, you get to bring someone back from
[1:20:51] Speaker 4: the dead at the end of the night. And it's
[1:20:54] Speaker 4: about what happens when all these people who for various
[1:20:58] Speaker 4: reasons have either lived in the town or wound up
[1:21:01] Speaker 4: in the town get involved in this sort of battle
[1:21:03] Speaker 4: royale and what transpires afterwards. And it's very very good.
[1:21:08] Speaker 4: It's really excellent. There's some really clever meta tricks it
[1:21:15] Speaker 4: pulls with God, there's one early on that I think
[1:21:19] Speaker 4: is so clever, but I don't want to give it
[1:21:21] Speaker 4: away because it's such a good twist. On an episode
[1:21:27] Speaker 4: of Acts of the Blood Gout, I did say what
[1:21:29] Speaker 4: it was, and some people were like, oh, come on,
[1:21:31] Speaker 4: I wanted to find that out, and I was like,
[1:21:32] Speaker 4: it's in the first like two hours. I didn't think
[1:21:34] Speaker 4: it was that big a deal, but I will I
[1:21:35] Speaker 4: will hold back now just to say that if you
[1:21:38] Speaker 4: like stuff like Zero Escape or anything where a game
[1:21:43] Speaker 4: that's going to toy with the idea of it acknowledges
[1:21:46] Speaker 4: that it's being played by a player, it acknowledges that
[1:21:49] Speaker 4: it's being toyed with. If you like near the way
[1:21:52] Speaker 4: that near kind of plays with that kind of stuff.
[1:21:56] Speaker 4: It does that, it does some really cool stuff with
[1:21:59] Speaker 4: that ways that I don't think you would expect an
[1:22:02] Speaker 4: adventure game to do all the time. And yeah, Paranormous
[1:22:07] Speaker 4: Paranormous Site really really good time. Heavily recommend it, especially
[1:22:10] Speaker 4: if you want something a little a little creepy. And
[1:22:12] Speaker 4: it definitely like very scary. That is, when I played
[1:22:14] Speaker 4: with the lights off on, I think my switch and
[1:22:17] Speaker 4: there are at least a few parts where my skin
[1:22:20] Speaker 4: was like crawling from anticipation. I would call it more
[1:22:24] Speaker 4: of a thriller than a horror game, but there.
[1:22:28] Speaker 2: I just added this to my wish list. For the record,
[1:22:30] Speaker 2: I had not heard of this game, and I'm.
[1:22:32] Speaker 4: Like, all this, Yeah, it's it's a Square Enix game
[1:22:34] Speaker 4: that got very little fanfair and it kind of bums
[1:22:38] Speaker 4: me out because I think a lot of people if
[1:22:40] Speaker 4: they actually got told what it was and like played
[1:22:44] Speaker 4: some of it, would be like, oh, this is my jam.
[1:22:47] Speaker 4: This is so good. It's one that I is always
[1:22:51] Speaker 4: at the top of my list when people say like,
[1:22:52] Speaker 4: what are your underrated? What games do you think deserve
[1:22:54] Speaker 4: more love? Paranormal Site is way up there, which is
[1:22:57] Speaker 4: weird because it's coming from Square Enix. You would, I
[1:23:00] Speaker 4: think it would have a little bit more of a
[1:23:01] Speaker 4: lift behind it, but I had no idea. That's the
[1:23:05] Speaker 4: for every Final Fantasy, you know, there's always a dungeon
[1:23:09] Speaker 4: encounters that that struggles to get the same attention, right,
[1:23:12] Speaker 4: So this is Paranormo site is the flip of that. Uh,
[1:23:15] Speaker 4: And it was it was really really very excellent excellent.
[1:23:18] Speaker 4: So yeah, all games quick ones to list off real quick, Charles.
[1:23:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, well, so I I had a third pick and
[1:23:27] Speaker 2: I could not remember because I'd written it down that
[1:23:29] Speaker 2: was gonna be instead of Epic Mickey. I was like,
[1:23:30] Speaker 2: I guess I'll just say epic mickeing is that written down?
[1:23:32] Speaker 2: Immortality would be my actual third pack? Oh I love that?
[1:23:36] Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, yeah, great horror game but also has like
[1:23:38] Speaker 2: a fall movies are vaguely fall to me, and something
[1:23:41] Speaker 2: about the idea of like digging through that that's like
[1:23:44] Speaker 2: a really good Uh, Immortality is my pick instead of
[1:23:47] Speaker 2: epic baby, But also that's fine. No one's we're not
[1:23:49] Speaker 2: like ranking these there's some points or anything. Other ones
[1:23:52] Speaker 2: I'll I'll just want to say, is like anything with
[1:23:55] Speaker 2: like a murder mystery. I feel like murder mysteries are
[1:23:58] Speaker 2: very Fall coded to me, Like the movie Knives Out
[1:24:00] Speaker 2: is like my favorite Fall horror movie. I would say,
[1:24:03] Speaker 2: but Tangle Tower tangled.
[1:24:07] Speaker 4: I was about to say, Tangle Tower is like the
[1:24:09] Speaker 4: Knives Out video game.
[1:24:11] Speaker 2: Yes it's yes, I know there's more by that studio,
[1:24:15] Speaker 2: even about those like characters, I just haven't played them.
[1:24:18] Speaker 2: I just played Tangle Tower.
[1:24:19] Speaker 4: When there's a new one on the way too.
[1:24:21] Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought it. Yeah, it just got delayed. I
[1:24:23] Speaker 2: don't know. Yeah, absolutely, And I remember playing it and
[1:24:26] Speaker 2: being like, oh, this is so awesome and I'd only
[1:24:28] Speaker 2: really ever played Ace Attorney of like a murder mystery
[1:24:30] Speaker 2: style of that type, and seeing other people do it,
[1:24:33] Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, this is like voiced and it's like
[1:24:34] Speaker 2: done well anyways, that's good. Uh. And then the other
[1:24:38] Speaker 2: one I was gonna say is like it feels almost
[1:24:40] Speaker 2: too obvious to even say, but Luigi's Mansion. Oh yeah,
[1:24:44] Speaker 2: yeah yeah yeah, so so yeah, so full couldn't get
[1:24:47] Speaker 2: more full?
[1:24:48] Speaker 1: I think, I think of I still like the Costume
[1:24:51] Speaker 1: Quest games. I know that people like don't like them
[1:24:56] Speaker 1: all that much. I think they're hit or missed for
[1:24:58] Speaker 1: some people it was like very on the nose, you
[1:25:01] Speaker 1: know from from Double Fine, but that's fine, and then
[1:25:04] Speaker 1: Left for Dead two.
[1:25:06] Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, oh yeah, every Zombies absolutely.
[1:25:10] Speaker 1: Yeah, and specifically that one is like you can play
[1:25:13] Speaker 1: versus mode. Still, it's a good time.
[1:25:17] Speaker 4: I also find myself wanting to explore certain parts of worlds,
[1:25:20] Speaker 4: so either going to a game like Marrowwind to just
[1:25:24] Speaker 4: walk around it and kind of experience it again, or
[1:25:28] Speaker 4: certain zones in Final Fantasy fourteen like the Rocktica, Great
[1:25:31] Speaker 4: Woods and stuff like that, actually zones Wow, very yeah,
[1:25:37] Speaker 4: where it just feels fitting for the season and it's
[1:25:40] Speaker 4: nice to kind of walk around those and maybe update
[1:25:43] Speaker 4: your your GLAMs, your transmogues to be seasonal and all that.
[1:25:47] Speaker 2: Exactly.
[1:25:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean most in momos like Wow, I f
[1:25:50] Speaker 1: have fourteen, Like that's really where I feel like the
[1:25:53] Speaker 1: good seasonal events also kick off, and usually fall is
[1:26:00] Speaker 1: when I renew Wow and start playing again something about it.
[1:26:05] Speaker 1: It's like I listened to Bonnie Bear and then I
[1:26:07] Speaker 1: renew my WOW subscription.
[1:26:09] Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, I don't think I've let my fourteen sub
[1:26:13] Speaker 4: labs yet, But the other day I was going like
[1:26:14] Speaker 4: I could really go for just sitting down with like
[1:26:16] Speaker 4: a nice cup of cider and playing some Triple Triad.
[1:26:19] Speaker 2: You know.
[1:26:19] Speaker 4: Say. Card games are also very outumble. I mean, they've
[1:26:21] Speaker 4: been very top of mind for me for a long time.
[1:26:24] Speaker 4: But something about like playing when I grew up, we
[1:26:27] Speaker 4: would play Rummy with my relatives and all that. We'd
[1:26:31] Speaker 4: always play card games and Thanksgiving and stuff like that.
[1:26:33] Speaker 2: So we didn't talk about Thanksgiving enough. I was gonna say.
[1:26:37] Speaker 2: As an aspect of this, the last game I didn't
[1:26:39] Speaker 2: mention was Mario Kart. We specifically for Maple Treeway, which
[1:26:43] Speaker 2: is just like Fall as a course, but just in general,
[1:26:46] Speaker 2: like there's a lot of like party games that you
[1:26:48] Speaker 2: would play.
[1:26:49] Speaker 4: Like with clubhouse games. Man sitting down with clubhouse games,
[1:26:52] Speaker 4: everybody playing some Mancala or something, you know, just have
[1:26:56] Speaker 4: a good time.
[1:26:58] Speaker 2: I dig that. Well.
[1:27:00] Speaker 1: I think that's gonna be it for the show this week. Everybody.
[1:27:04] Speaker 1: I hope that wherever you're listening to a SAT, you're safe,
[1:27:08] Speaker 1: you're warm, you're cozy, unless you're in Minneapolis and it's
[1:27:12] Speaker 1: still it was eighty degrees a couple of days ago.
[1:27:15] Speaker 1: But but yeah, I hope everybody has a great start
[1:27:20] Speaker 1: to October.
[1:27:21] Speaker 4: The fall.
[1:27:22] Speaker 1: I feel like I'm definitely we're starting to decorate for Halloween.
[1:27:25] Speaker 1: Now we're gonna be throwing a party. I'm excited. It's
[1:27:28] Speaker 1: like definitely getting into like the fall spirit.
[1:27:31] Speaker 2: You guys like you guys like cooking, right, Yeah, yeah,
[1:27:35] Speaker 2: what's what's all the menu for the party?
[1:27:38] Speaker 1: We were actually talking about that last night. We might
[1:27:40] Speaker 1: do something easy and just do like a chili. We
[1:27:42] Speaker 1: also have like friends who are vegan, and it's easy
[1:27:44] Speaker 1: to do vegan chili. A lot of the time you
[1:27:47] Speaker 1: can make back and out.
[1:27:48] Speaker 4: Of these Yeah, well, vean vegan mac and cheese can
[1:27:51] Speaker 4: be kind of difficult. It's a lot of dairy. I've
[1:27:53] Speaker 4: got to go in there.
[1:27:54] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[1:27:54] Speaker 4: Yeah, but I love a good chili. Oh chili sound
[1:28:01] Speaker 4: sound a good stew? I love beef stew for this
[1:28:03] Speaker 4: time of the year. Granted that probably gets a little
[1:28:06] Speaker 4: bit more winter, but I don't know. Beef stew for
[1:28:09] Speaker 4: me is year round.
[1:28:11] Speaker 2: My dad would always make a batch of chili on
[1:28:13] Speaker 2: Sundays while he's watching the football game. So I say, also,
[1:28:17] Speaker 2: I'm from Cincinnati, so we've got Cincinnati style chili, which
[1:28:20] Speaker 2: is also a big cultural event if you're in Cincinnati.
[1:28:23] Speaker 2: Here's here's game before is big news. I mean you've
[1:28:25] Speaker 2: seen it here if you live in Ohio. But Skyline's
[1:28:28] Speaker 2: adding a chicken chili to the menu and it's actually
[1:28:31] Speaker 2: pretty good.
[1:28:32] Speaker 4: A chicken chili.
[1:28:34] Speaker 1: Go watch the of Charles and Leo.
[1:28:38] Speaker 2: Yeah, Leo flew to Dayton to eat Skyline and he
[1:28:41] Speaker 2: was like, yeah, it's pretty good.
[1:28:44] Speaker 1: Yeah, go watch that video.
[1:28:45] Speaker 2: Yep.
[1:28:46] Speaker 1: I think Eric's like, what the hell?
[1:28:48] Speaker 2: So is it?
[1:28:48] Speaker 4: Is it like ground chicken or is it okay?
[1:28:52] Speaker 2: That's where I.
[1:28:53] Speaker 4: Was confused, is like, what was the Is it just
[1:28:55] Speaker 4: like shredded chicken in chili sauce?
[1:28:58] Speaker 2: It's ground chicken instead of ground That's the only okay
[1:29:00] Speaker 2: that makes My mom doesn't eat red meat, so she's
[1:29:03] Speaker 2: never she goes to Skyland. She gets like the vegetarian chili,
[1:29:06] Speaker 2: which is just.
[1:29:06] Speaker 4: Like the bees. There is their turkey chili there, and
[1:29:08] Speaker 4: turkey chili is pretty good.
[1:29:09] Speaker 2: This is this is their first time I think adding
[1:29:11] Speaker 2: a different meat, and they went chesape and they went chicken.
[1:29:15] Speaker 2: It wasn't testing. When you taste it, it's I wouldn't
[1:29:17] Speaker 2: have guessed. The thing different about it was the meat,
[1:29:20] Speaker 2: Like it tastes different, but I would have thought it
[1:29:22] Speaker 2: was like they added more tomato or something. It wasn't
[1:29:24] Speaker 2: so right, could be anything.
[1:29:30] Speaker 1: Yeah, All right, y'all, thanks for listening to the podcast
