On Friday night, Indiana destroyed Oregon by a 56-22 score, leaving no doubt why the Hoosiers were the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. It was a dominant effort by Curt Cignetti, Fernando Mendoza, and a Hoosier defense that forced three first half turnovers. So dominant, in fact, that we're struggling to put it in historical context. In this episode, we walk back through the game, peek a bit ahead to the national championship game and, of course, give Dan a chance to sound off on a disappointing ending to Oregon's season. [0:02] Speaker 1: Welcome to the solid verbal hull.
[0:05] Speaker 2: For me, I'm a man, I'm forty. I've heard so
[0:08] Speaker 2: many players say, well I want to be happy.
[0:10] Speaker 1: You want to be happy for a day Edith state
[0:13] Speaker 1: is that whoo whoom and Dan and tie Hi Dan,
[0:21] Speaker 1: Hey Tye here, how about this?
[0:27] Speaker 2: Nothing?
[0:28] Speaker 1: Nothing, that's what I am. No, I mean, that's the like.
[0:32] Speaker 1: That's the amount of uh interesting things I have to
[0:37] Speaker 1: say about this, because it's very simple.
[0:39] Speaker 3: At any point while you were watching Oregon lose fifty
[0:42] Speaker 3: six to twenty two to Indiana, at any point did
[0:47] Speaker 3: you wish that you had extended your pee wee basketball
[0:49] Speaker 3: practice to about five hours tonight so that you didn't
[0:52] Speaker 3: have to witness that massacre.
[0:54] Speaker 1: I think I would have rather watched this game three
[0:56] Speaker 1: times that extended that practice. Okay, we can get any
[1:00] Speaker 1: longer if we wanted to be Yeah, but yeah, we've
[1:04] Speaker 1: got a lot to unpack here.
[1:05] Speaker 2: Hello, welcome back. I'm Tye. He is Dan.
[1:08] Speaker 3: This is a solid verbel Please hit follow, police, hit subscribe,
[1:10] Speaker 3: help support the team. We saw one college football playoff
[1:15] Speaker 3: semi final on Thursday night, that one between Miami and
[1:19] Speaker 3: Ole Miss. That was a barn burner, the one that
[1:22] Speaker 3: we had tonight Friday, January the ninth was very much
[1:27] Speaker 3: not and it was very much not right from the
[1:29] Speaker 3: jump when Indiana scored on a pick six on literally
[1:33] Speaker 3: the first play of the game. The Angelo Ponds picks
[1:35] Speaker 3: one off runs back for a twenty five yard touchdown
[1:39] Speaker 3: to get Indiana off the schneid right away, seven to zip.
[1:43] Speaker 3: It did not get any better from there again. Your
[1:45] Speaker 3: final score fifty six to twenty two, a fully dominant
[1:50] Speaker 3: showing by the number one Indiana who who Hoosiers fernandomn Doza.
[1:55] Speaker 3: Five touchdown passes, for the most part, unstoppable. The Indiana
[1:59] Speaker 3: defense I was just looking ten tackles for lost three sacks.
[2:04] Speaker 2: Every part of.
[2:05] Speaker 3: This Indiana machine right now is operating at optimum efficiency,
[2:10] Speaker 3: which is a real scary sight, especially if you are
[2:14] Speaker 3: the Miami Hurricanes. Maybe we can talk about that a
[2:18] Speaker 3: little bit later on here in this recording, dam but.
[2:22] Speaker 2: I have to play it. I'm sorry, who just got.
[2:26] Speaker 3: This was obviously a very very dominant showing by the
[2:30] Speaker 3: Indiana Hoosiers. I'm not gonna sit here and dunk on Oregon.
[2:33] Speaker 3: I will maybe a little bit later. You am first starters, No, no, no,
[2:37] Speaker 3: first starters. We got to give credit where it's due.
[2:40] Speaker 3: I'm gonna kick it over to you because you are
[2:42] Speaker 3: the organ alum among us. What were your thoughts watching
[2:46] Speaker 3: this massacre?
[2:49] Speaker 1: Nothing? I mean it was at a certain point it
[2:52] Speaker 1: just went to nothing. At a certain point, I just
[2:54] Speaker 1: had glazed eyes staring at the TV, but really threw
[2:57] Speaker 1: the TV into the emptiness that can be the feelings
[3:01] Speaker 1: of life sometimes. What were my feelings? Look, you opened
[3:06] Speaker 1: a game throwing a pick six. It was a bad pass.
[3:08] Speaker 1: It was a great jump by D'Angelo Pond's. It was
[3:10] Speaker 1: a great play. And you spot an excellent team like
[3:13] Speaker 1: Indiana very clearly is seven points. That's not great. That's
[3:16] Speaker 1: not great. You spot them turnover after turnover and with
[3:22] Speaker 1: the fumbles, with the the just the general offensive issues.
[3:26] Speaker 1: After that first drive that Oregon did have, they jumped
[3:30] Speaker 1: back onto the scoreboard and made it seven all with
[3:31] Speaker 1: a nice drive. There's no excuse, there's nothing like for Oregon.
[3:38] Speaker 1: This is what was going through my mind. You asked me,
[3:39] Speaker 1: what's going through my mind? If will Stein were coming
[3:41] Speaker 1: back next year, and Tash to the poy, we're coming
[3:43] Speaker 1: back next year, this would have been an ass kicking.
[3:46] Speaker 1: If Jordan Davison were in there. If No Whittington and
[3:49] Speaker 1: Jayden Lamar were in there, this would have been an
[3:52] Speaker 1: ass kicking. If Dante Moore had declared that no, I'm
[3:56] Speaker 1: coming back next year, I'm so excited to play with
[3:57] Speaker 1: my guys, blah blah blah, and took erase to any
[3:59] Speaker 1: of a doubt there, this would have been an ass kicking.
[4:03] Speaker 1: I don't know, you know, if the portal were opening
[4:06] Speaker 1: in a month instead of opening last week, this would
[4:08] Speaker 1: have been an ass kicking. I think you're sensing a
[4:11] Speaker 1: theme here that Oregan was not prepared for this game.
[4:15] Speaker 1: Oregon made mistakes in a way that a far less
[4:19] Speaker 1: than Indiana team makes, and Oregon is far less. I mean,
[4:23] Speaker 1: the conversation at least at some points in the week
[4:28] Speaker 1: leading up to this game was it's tough to beat
[4:29] Speaker 1: a strong team twice. Sure, maybe that's true. Oregon did
[4:34] Speaker 1: not look strong in this game. They did not look
[4:36] Speaker 1: like a strong team, let alone a strong team against Indiana.
[4:40] Speaker 1: The flip side of that would be like, it's tough
[4:45] Speaker 1: to look this strong against It's tough to only lose
[4:48] Speaker 1: by ten against Indiana twice. I just that you could
[4:54] Speaker 1: just sense something from Indiana that they are ready for
[4:58] Speaker 1: every moment, right, every third and three is just like, yeah,
[5:03] Speaker 1: of course we're going to convert this into a first down.
[5:05] Speaker 1: Of course, a receiver is going to break three yards
[5:08] Speaker 1: past the sticks. Of course, even if that receiver is
[5:11] Speaker 1: covered that they're going to block it up. And Fernando
[5:13] Speaker 1: Mendoz is just going to buy himself time and scramble
[5:16] Speaker 1: for a first down. And even when Oregon, you know,
[5:20] Speaker 1: as they're being slaughtered, is you know, converting some bigger
[5:23] Speaker 1: plays and driving down the field. Dar Hill had a
[5:25] Speaker 1: seventy yard run. There was just like the Indiana played
[5:29] Speaker 1: the next play like it was the most important play
[5:31] Speaker 1: of their lives. And they played every play like it
[5:33] Speaker 1: was the most important play of their lives. And I
[5:37] Speaker 1: just think that this Indiana offense and defense were perfectly
[5:41] Speaker 1: formed and curated for this talent. The talent is coached
[5:43] Speaker 1: super well, who was evaluated super well. There's no shortage
[5:46] Speaker 1: of pieces you can read about Kurt Signetti's evaluation process
[5:50] Speaker 1: and uh development process with production.
[5:54] Speaker 3: They said it a production podcast, but they got a
[5:57] Speaker 3: lot of production in this one.
[5:58] Speaker 1: At least Oregon can be an excellent team against a
[6:03] Speaker 1: lot of teams. Indiana has their number, has their letter,
[6:07] Speaker 1: has their punctuation, has every single piece of the Oregon Bible,
[6:13] Speaker 1: whatever it is you want to call it. Indiana was
[6:16] Speaker 1: way better in October, they were way better today, and
[6:19] Speaker 1: they will continue to be way better until proven otherwise.
[6:22] Speaker 1: And frankly, tie, I'm pretty sick of ending every season
[6:27] Speaker 1: like this. Shit, I'm pretty sick of it. It's a
[6:31] Speaker 1: good run. Oregon won the Big Ten last year. Oregon
[6:34] Speaker 1: had a nice season this year, but not being ready
[6:38] Speaker 1: for this moment. And look, there was a lot stacked
[6:40] Speaker 1: up against them, but once again, even if there weren't,
[6:44] Speaker 1: it would have been an ass kicking. Oregon was just
[6:46] Speaker 1: not ready to compete on this level. Now we can
[6:49] Speaker 1: have a separate conversation about where this Indiana team stacks
[6:53] Speaker 1: up in modern history, perhaps if they win the national
[6:56] Speaker 1: championship whatever, because there's a worthwhile conversation to be had there.
[7:00] Speaker 3: Dude, it's when they win the national championship. But they
[7:02] Speaker 3: play like this these last two games, right against two.
[7:05] Speaker 3: I mean, listen, we could argue whether or not in
[7:07] Speaker 3: Alabama should have been in the playoff, but y, Alabama
[7:10] Speaker 3: is not a bad team by any stretch. They might
[7:12] Speaker 3: have been team number thirteen instead of team number twelve,
[7:15] Speaker 3: but they were very much in the hunt for a
[7:17] Speaker 3: good reason. They got smoked. Oregon unanimously a top five team.
[7:23] Speaker 3: They got smoked. To come out and be this dominant
[7:27] Speaker 3: against two really quality teams, that's just hard to do.
[7:30] Speaker 3: So no disrespect to Miami. It's a cool story. They
[7:34] Speaker 3: get this game at home. They are obviously playing with
[7:37] Speaker 3: much purpose to their own credit, but if we see
[7:42] Speaker 3: this version of Indiana again, Miami's not gonna be within
[7:45] Speaker 3: twenty one points for them.
[7:46] Speaker 2: They're just not right.
[7:48] Speaker 1: I'm with you. Look, there's a reason you still got
[7:51] Speaker 1: to play the game. You still you know, weird stuff happens.
[7:53] Speaker 1: It's a strange sport. But the manner in which Miami
[7:56] Speaker 1: is winning, which is impressive all things, consider their growth
[8:00] Speaker 1: rio Chris Baul, very impressive. I say that with zero
[8:03] Speaker 1: snark or sarcasm. The manner in which Indiana is winning
[8:08] Speaker 1: when they're locked in is just on a different level
[8:10] Speaker 1: than everybody in this moment that they were able to
[8:13] Speaker 1: do their last three games were dominating at least one
[8:17] Speaker 1: side of the ball, if not both sides the ball.
[8:20] Speaker 1: Against Ohio State Alabama and Oregon. These are deeply talented
[8:24] Speaker 1: teams motivated, perhaps to different extents. Obviously Ohio State dealing
[8:28] Speaker 1: with a lot of new players. I guess all three
[8:31] Speaker 1: of these teams dealing with somewhat, you know, a new
[8:34] Speaker 1: roster in a lot of places. But so is Indiana, right, Like,
[8:39] Speaker 1: there isn't an actual excuse that holds water beyond they're
[8:43] Speaker 1: a lot better than we are, and I don't know how,
[8:49] Speaker 1: Like I don't want to belabor the point because it's
[8:52] Speaker 1: like kind of simple at this moment that Indiana is
[8:54] Speaker 1: just way better. Their players perform at a higher level,
[8:57] Speaker 1: their coaches perform at a higher level. It's tough to
[9:00] Speaker 1: find solace in anything, even though once again it was
[9:02] Speaker 1: a really successful year for Oregon. Oregon was better than
[9:05] Speaker 1: one hundred and thirty three teams one hundred and thirty
[9:07] Speaker 1: four teams minimum. They might be the second best team
[9:10] Speaker 1: in this sport and the second best team in the
[9:13] Speaker 1: sport just lost by do the quick math for me,
[9:15] Speaker 1: thirty four points.
[9:16] Speaker 2: That is correct.
[9:17] Speaker 1: They might be number two. We'll see what happens with Miami,
[9:20] Speaker 1: but maybe they're number They're probably number three, right, is
[9:25] Speaker 1: Oregon gonna finish number three.
[9:28] Speaker 3: They might yeah, I mean, listen, I don't even know
[9:33] Speaker 3: if it's a black guy to lose to Indiana. I
[9:35] Speaker 3: think if you're an Oregon fan and I'm not, and
[9:38] Speaker 3: you could obviously speak much more to that point. Obviously
[9:41] Speaker 3: you're disappointed that you lost, but losing isn't the worst part.
[9:45] Speaker 3: The worst part is that you lost in this capacity
[9:48] Speaker 3: in a way that didn't even feel like it was close.
[9:50] Speaker 3: I mean, part of the early storyline, at least in
[9:53] Speaker 3: the first half, was three first half turnovers that led
[9:56] Speaker 3: to twenty one Indiana points. Later on in the game,
[9:59] Speaker 3: there was a block punt that ended up giving Indiana
[10:02] Speaker 3: twenty eight points off of Oregon mistakes in some way,
[10:06] Speaker 3: shape or form. If you subtract those twenty eight points,
[10:09] Speaker 3: Indiana still wins this game by six points. Okay, that's
[10:12] Speaker 3: how shar and a way better they were in this game.
[10:15] Speaker 3: Did it change momentum? Did it change the tenor of
[10:18] Speaker 3: the game. Did it alter Oregon's game plan? I think
[10:21] Speaker 3: it had to. I don't think there's any way around that.
[10:23] Speaker 3: But this was just a fully dominant showing no matter
[10:26] Speaker 3: how you slice it. Eleven of fourteen on third downs
[10:31] Speaker 3: for Indiana. Oregon, to their credit, was fine on third
[10:34] Speaker 3: downs as well, eight of thirteen, but eleven of fourteen,
[10:37] Speaker 3: I think is a pretty symbolic way of talking about
[10:43] Speaker 3: how Indiana just felt unstoppable when they had the football.
[10:47] Speaker 3: You know, whether you're looking at Fernanda Mendoza going seventeen
[10:50] Speaker 3: of twenty for the five touchdowns, whether you're looking at
[10:53] Speaker 3: them having no turnovers, not creating while creating Oregon mistakes
[10:57] Speaker 3: but not having any of their own, whether you're looking
[10:59] Speaker 3: at that third down number, everything about this felt very inevitable,
[11:04] Speaker 3: both in the moment and now after the fact.
[11:06] Speaker 2: You look at at the stat line.
[11:08] Speaker 3: I'll even go back to before they kicked the game off,
[11:11] Speaker 3: it was like ninety five percent Indiana fans there. If
[11:13] Speaker 3: you looked out in the crowd, it was pretty much
[11:16] Speaker 3: a sea of red. So everything about this moment felt
[11:19] Speaker 3: like it was coming up Indiana. And in the end, again,
[11:23] Speaker 3: fifty six to twenty two was your final score.
[11:26] Speaker 1: And by the way, that's cool that it's ninety five
[11:29] Speaker 1: percent Indiana. It could have been ninety five percent Bengal
[11:33] Speaker 1: Tigers in the crowd.
[11:34] Speaker 2: They could have played that game on the moon. It
[11:36] Speaker 2: wouldn't have mattered.
[11:37] Speaker 1: They could have played that game in assembly hall on
[11:41] Speaker 1: a basketball court in Bloomington, Indiana. I think that's what
[11:43] Speaker 1: it's called. I know it is an Illinois. They could
[11:45] Speaker 1: have played that game in Bloomington at a high school.
[11:48] Speaker 1: They could have played that game in front of standing
[11:50] Speaker 1: room only in the Tokyo Dome full of Indiana fans.
[11:53] Speaker 1: They could have played that game in Eugene, Oregon. Again.
[11:55] Speaker 1: They could have played that game at Switzerland. It doesn't matter.
[12:00] Speaker 1: As cool as it is though, the ninety five percent
[12:02] Speaker 1: of the crowd being Indiana fans, did nothing for this game. No,
[12:06] Speaker 1: it's just cool that so many people got to see
[12:09] Speaker 1: Indiana perform in a spot like this that wanted it
[12:11] Speaker 1: to happen. But no, it had no bearing on the
[12:12] Speaker 1: outcome of this game.
[12:13] Speaker 3: So there, of course, is the layer of Indiana just
[12:16] Speaker 3: being unstoppable, a buzzsaw, a wagon, inevitable, whatever way you
[12:23] Speaker 3: choose to represent what we're seeing from the Indiana Hoosiers.
[12:26] Speaker 3: They're still the only undefeated team in the country and
[12:29] Speaker 3: they are going to the national championship. From their standpoint,
[12:33] Speaker 3: it would be the very first national championship that they
[12:35] Speaker 3: have won in football. Obviously, Miami has won many before,
[12:39] Speaker 3: but it's been about twenty five years. So we're going
[12:42] Speaker 3: to have two relatively new ish teams playing for a
[12:45] Speaker 3: national championship, which I think is cool. It makes for
[12:48] Speaker 3: a cool story when they meet on January the nineteenth,
[12:51] Speaker 3: which is a week from this coming Monday. The other
[12:54] Speaker 3: layer to this is again this continued arc of Indiana
[12:59] Speaker 3: football going from the perennial doormat to now this unstoppable
[13:06] Speaker 3: force in college football. And I saw our friend Ben Jones,
[13:11] Speaker 3: who obviously writes about Penn State. He had a great
[13:14] Speaker 3: tweet earlier tonight. Indiana's season is just an existentially exhausting
[13:19] Speaker 3: thing for a place like Penn State. And I would
[13:22] Speaker 3: add to many other places like Penn State. Dan spent
[13:26] Speaker 3: a decade treading water. Indiana cuts the line with half
[13:30] Speaker 3: the effort in toil, and now here they are right.
[13:33] Speaker 3: Whether you're Oregon, whether you're Penn State, whether you're any
[13:37] Speaker 3: number of the teams around college football who have been
[13:41] Speaker 3: nosed to the grindstone for years trying to build up
[13:43] Speaker 3: a program, trying to get to this point, trying to
[13:46] Speaker 3: get to this moment where you can perhaps get into
[13:48] Speaker 3: a national championship to have Indiana swoop in in just
[13:54] Speaker 3: two years with the combination of the right coaching staff
[13:58] Speaker 3: and the right players via the portal and maybe a
[14:01] Speaker 3: little bit of a luck here and a little bit
[14:02] Speaker 3: of luck here in there, even though there wasn't a
[14:03] Speaker 3: whole lot that they needed in this one, but for
[14:07] Speaker 3: them to now just sort of cut to the front
[14:09] Speaker 3: of the line and be in this moment, It's the
[14:12] Speaker 3: kind of thing that I think is going to have
[14:14] Speaker 3: a lot of athletic directors and a lot of coaches
[14:16] Speaker 3: around the sport looking in the mirror wondering how did
[14:19] Speaker 3: they do this? It still kind of feels like a
[14:21] Speaker 3: magic trick. I know we have Indiana fans who listen
[14:24] Speaker 3: to this or who have found this over the last
[14:27] Speaker 3: couple of months as Indiana has gone on this incredible run.
[14:30] Speaker 3: I think many of them would say the same thing.
[14:32] Speaker 3: They knew the team would be better this year. When
[14:34] Speaker 3: we did our preview.
[14:35] Speaker 2: We knew the team would be better this year. That
[14:37] Speaker 2: was never really a question.
[14:39] Speaker 3: It was a matter of, you know, to what degree
[14:41] Speaker 3: do we have confidence that even getting a little bit
[14:43] Speaker 3: better is going to catapult them to new heights. Nobody
[14:47] Speaker 3: could have guessed that they would be in this position
[14:49] Speaker 3: that they're in right now. But I would say, at
[14:52] Speaker 3: a minimum, if you are one of those programs around
[14:54] Speaker 3: college football that aspires to be here to look at
[14:58] Speaker 3: the plight of Indiana and curtgcign any a very short
[15:00] Speaker 3: period of time, it's a big old shrug. It still
[15:04] Speaker 3: feels like a magic trick. And I know the people
[15:06] Speaker 3: that listen to the show who root for Indiana, many
[15:09] Speaker 3: of them are written in. They feel the same. They
[15:11] Speaker 3: just like literally nobody saw this coming, maybe outside of
[15:14] Speaker 3: Kurt Signetti.
[15:15] Speaker 1: Right, yeah, I mean, look, I don't know what there
[15:21] Speaker 1: is to add. They do every little thing well. That's
[15:23] Speaker 1: a well coached team, and even when fumbles appear to
[15:28] Speaker 1: just have magnets for their own hands. Right, Fernando Mendoza
[15:32] Speaker 1: has two fumbles, one bounces to was it Coogan Pat Cougan, right,
[15:36] Speaker 1: and the other one he recovers early on in the game.
[15:41] Speaker 1: They're just automatic in every moment, right. The receivers don't
[15:45] Speaker 1: drop anything. They don't drop a single contested catch. Ever.
[15:50] Speaker 1: I think that they last time they lost to fumble
[15:52] Speaker 1: was like the eighteenth play of the season they noted
[15:55] Speaker 1: against was that Odu was their opening round matchup. Yeah,
[16:00] Speaker 1: it's incredible to behold on this level. It's been incredible
[16:04] Speaker 1: to behold. I guess good for Ohio State for keeping
[16:07] Speaker 1: it as close as they did, state an opportunity.
[16:10] Speaker 3: If I could bring something up here. That kind of
[16:14] Speaker 3: caught me off guard. But then I've been sitting with
[16:17] Speaker 3: it since they mentioned it on the broadcast, and the
[16:21] Speaker 3: more I think about it, the more it feels like
[16:23] Speaker 3: a very app comparison. If you watch this game at all,
[16:28] Speaker 3: they were drawing comparisons first and foremost between Fernando Mendoza
[16:32] Speaker 3: and the great Joe but Joe Burrow, youre excuse me
[16:35] Speaker 3: of twenty nineteen whenever it was at LSU, right, and
[16:41] Speaker 3: you can see the comparison. I understand why you would
[16:44] Speaker 3: draw that. But more broadly, they were talking about the
[16:47] Speaker 3: Indiana team and comparing it to the run that LSU
[16:49] Speaker 3: went sean in that year. I don't know if LSU
[16:53] Speaker 3: quite had the same defense that were sated from India didn't.
[16:57] Speaker 2: I know they.
[16:58] Speaker 3: Didn't, but certainly there was this feeling of everyone is
[17:03] Speaker 3: standing on the tracks and the trains coming through and
[17:05] Speaker 3: it's LSU. And when I first heard that comparison, I
[17:09] Speaker 3: must admit I was like, Ooh, I don't know about that,
[17:12] Speaker 3: because I tend to think of that twenty nineteen LSU
[17:14] Speaker 3: team as one of the greatest I have seen, certainly
[17:17] Speaker 3: in our time doing this show, in all my time
[17:20] Speaker 3: watching and rooting for college football. But the more I
[17:23] Speaker 3: see Indiana in spots like this, obviously there's a big
[17:27] Speaker 3: one left to go. It sort of fits Dan, It
[17:33] Speaker 3: sort of fits And I never thought I would say that,
[17:35] Speaker 3: because that was one of the greatest single seasons that
[17:38] Speaker 3: I think I will ever see, that we will ever see.
[17:41] Speaker 3: But the pure inevitability of this Indiana team, how they
[17:47] Speaker 3: do not make mistakes, They do not give you any mulligans.
[17:51] Speaker 3: For Nano Mendoza, it feels like a friggin robot back there.
[17:55] Speaker 3: There is nothing you could throw at him or this
[17:58] Speaker 3: line that is going to confuse these guys. No, they
[18:01] Speaker 3: are a machine in the same way as that LSU team,
[18:05] Speaker 3: And that is damn freaking scary if you're a Miami
[18:08] Speaker 3: Hurricane fan right.
[18:08] Speaker 1: Now, yeah, I mean, look to play Devil's advocate. Obviously
[18:12] Speaker 1: LSU had an easier road in the SEC to put
[18:15] Speaker 1: up those stats, right and like we're talking and we're
[18:18] Speaker 1: just talking about a conference that can't compete on a
[18:20] Speaker 1: high level. Settle settle, No, No, it's okay, No, Like I'm
[18:25] Speaker 1: just saying what we're all thinking.
[18:26] Speaker 3: Continue that clearly that LSU team had a bunch of
[18:29] Speaker 3: first round picks on it unbelievable. Yeah, it was an
[18:31] Speaker 3: unbelievable assembly of talent. Now I don't think this Indiana
[18:35] Speaker 3: team is going to have that many first round picks.
[18:36] Speaker 3: It doesn't matter though, right It's not about the NFL
[18:39] Speaker 3: and the first round picks thing.
[18:40] Speaker 2: That's a component to it.
[18:41] Speaker 3: But the level of domination that I think we have
[18:44] Speaker 3: seen is where I am drawing that comparison.
[18:47] Speaker 2: And you know, I don't know.
[18:48] Speaker 3: People can weigh in if they if they think it's
[18:51] Speaker 3: a bad way to compare what Indiana is doing so
[18:54] Speaker 3: far this season.
[18:54] Speaker 2: It wasn't even my idea. They mentioned it on the broadcast.
[18:57] Speaker 3: But if this is in tended to be an instant
[19:01] Speaker 3: reaction show where we kind of give our knee jerk
[19:04] Speaker 3: thoughts here, I have been sitting with that since they
[19:07] Speaker 3: mentioned it, and I'm going to be thinking about it
[19:10] Speaker 3: for the next ten days.
[19:12] Speaker 2: Sure.
[19:14] Speaker 1: LSU's net points per drive in twenty nineteen was two
[19:18] Speaker 1: point four to three, so offensive points for drive minus
[19:20] Speaker 1: defensive points per drive allowed. This year's Indiana going into
[19:25] Speaker 1: this game is slightly ahead of them at two point
[19:26] Speaker 1: four to nine, and that's before tonight's game, which I
[19:29] Speaker 1: think will add to your discrepancy one with So yeah, look,
[19:36] Speaker 1: LSU was in a four team playoff era. This is
[19:38] Speaker 1: a twelve team playoff era. LSU needed to win two games.
[19:42] Speaker 1: Indiana is going to need to win by my count,
[19:45] Speaker 1: how many tie three games? Four games?
[19:48] Speaker 2: Three games, and I you have to win more games.
[19:51] Speaker 3: The other side of it, too, is just it was
[19:54] Speaker 3: a different era back then, right, you couldn't use the
[19:58] Speaker 3: transfer portal to the extent Indiana has used it now.
[20:01] Speaker 3: And they another thing that another thing that I think
[20:04] Speaker 3: they were they were wise to bring up on the
[20:05] Speaker 3: broadcast was one of the things that teams are dealing
[20:08] Speaker 3: with in light of all this portal movement is it's
[20:11] Speaker 3: really tough to build depth the way some of those
[20:14] Speaker 3: older teams could.
[20:15] Speaker 1: Totally.
[20:15] Speaker 3: Those LS teams stacked talent on top of talent on
[20:18] Speaker 3: top of town. They were three deep at every key position.
[20:21] Speaker 3: Indiana said they're playing thirteen guys on defense. You know,
[20:24] Speaker 3: it is not the deepest team. I think depth across
[20:27] Speaker 3: college football has taken a hit for obvious reasons. So
[20:30] Speaker 3: it's not exactly apples to apples, but there's definitely a
[20:34] Speaker 3: conversation to be had there.
[20:36] Speaker 2: Let me ask you this though.
[20:37] Speaker 1: Okay, yeah, By the way, just to clarify, to fully
[20:41] Speaker 1: fact check the the twenty nineteen LSU thing, Joe Burrow
[20:45] Speaker 1: was a trans He was a trend to LSC, so
[20:47] Speaker 1: they did take advantage of the ability for a quarterback
[20:51] Speaker 1: to trans. Fair Enough, Ohio State felt like he was
[20:54] Speaker 1: not just you know, high enough level. That was an
[20:56] Speaker 1: urban Meyer thing. Continue.
[20:58] Speaker 3: I am gonna circle back to Oregon at some point
[21:01] Speaker 3: because you mentioned something that I want to unpack a
[21:05] Speaker 3: little bit more. But for the time being, I do
[21:08] Speaker 3: want to at least talk about this matchup that we
[21:11] Speaker 3: have coming up between Indiana and Miami.
[21:14] Speaker 2: Again.
[21:15] Speaker 3: This game is going to take place on January of
[21:17] Speaker 3: the nineteenth. They're going to play this game in hard
[21:20] Speaker 3: Rock Stadium, which is an interesting story unto itself, not
[21:24] Speaker 3: just because it's going to be in Miami's home stadium.
[21:26] Speaker 3: It's also Fernanda Mendoz's hometown grew up a very short
[21:31] Speaker 3: ways away from the University of Miami at time of recording. Again,
[21:36] Speaker 3: we're doing this in the immediate aftermath of this dominant
[21:39] Speaker 3: win by or by Indiana.
[21:41] Speaker 2: Excuse me.
[21:42] Speaker 3: Indiana enters that game as about a seven and one
[21:46] Speaker 3: half point favorite. So just in thinking ahead, we have
[21:50] Speaker 3: not had the opportunity to go in and do the
[21:53] Speaker 3: deep dive and look at the numbers and the matchups
[21:55] Speaker 3: and the zone schemes and whatever else we look at
[21:57] Speaker 3: when we put our predictions together. By about ten days out,
[22:02] Speaker 3: thinking of that matchup seven and a half points in
[22:06] Speaker 3: favor of Indiana, how does that make you feel.
[22:09] Speaker 1: Good about Indiana? I mean, what kind of unless Unless
[22:15] Speaker 1: I'm going to convince myself in the next week that
[22:17] Speaker 1: Oregon was the biggest paper Tiger that I just never
[22:22] Speaker 1: fully saw coming. And same goes for Alabama. I'm not
[22:26] Speaker 1: sure what Miami offers that is wholly convincing that would
[22:34] Speaker 1: have me believe that they are going to be able
[22:36] Speaker 1: to hang with this team. If if we're going to
[22:41] Speaker 1: buy Indiana as excellent and bulletproof and worthy of at
[22:45] Speaker 1: least a conversation about the greatest recent performances from a
[22:48] Speaker 1: team overall, I don't think we just have that conversation
[22:52] Speaker 1: about Miami, and it feels like I'm disrespecting the Canes.
[22:54] Speaker 1: And that's fine if you feel that way. But Miami
[22:58] Speaker 1: can merely be really really good and super impressive and
[23:02] Speaker 1: a strong team and a worthy team to be in
[23:06] Speaker 1: this spot. But also, I come back to what we've
[23:10] Speaker 1: talked about in previewing some of these games, and we
[23:13] Speaker 1: probably should have before this Indiana Oregon game. If there
[23:16] Speaker 1: is a blowout in this National Championship game, is there
[23:19] Speaker 1: a universe in which Miami's winning this game thirty eight
[23:21] Speaker 1: to ten.
[23:22] Speaker 2: No.
[23:23] Speaker 1: I don't believe that to be the case. No, And
[23:26] Speaker 1: so usually that's a good indicator going into a big game.
[23:30] Speaker 1: No big games can go either way, of course, But
[23:33] Speaker 1: if there is a blowout, is it seventy percent of
[23:36] Speaker 1: the time going to be this team? Ninety three percent
[23:38] Speaker 1: of the time going to be this Like, I just
[23:40] Speaker 1: don't see universe in which Miami makes work of Indiana,
[23:44] Speaker 1: And so I just don't think they're crisp enough, because
[23:48] Speaker 1: you have to be that crisp against this year's Indiana team.
[23:52] Speaker 1: You have to be playing such clean what did I say,
[23:54] Speaker 1: eat off the floor football?
[23:55] Speaker 3: No?
[23:56] Speaker 1: Oregon did not play eat off the floor football. No,
[23:58] Speaker 1: put me down for that analysis, right. They did not
[24:01] Speaker 1: play eat off the floor clean football against Indiana, and
[24:05] Speaker 1: so I just am not a believer in Miami, especially
[24:09] Speaker 1: given whatever their injuries look like on defense heading into
[24:11] Speaker 1: this game and down a starting corner for the first
[24:14] Speaker 1: half because of a targeting call. I just don't think
[24:18] Speaker 1: that Miami can get away with being Miami against Indiana.
[24:23] Speaker 3: The penalties, right, but yeah, the penalty the penalties, I
[24:27] Speaker 3: think is something that we'll need to discuss when we
[24:29] Speaker 3: do the official preview. But I'm curious to see what
[24:33] Speaker 3: kind of pressure Corey Heatherman dials up, Yeah, what they
[24:37] Speaker 3: try to do to neutralize for Nana Mendoza if you can.
[24:41] Speaker 3: I mean, no one's really been able to do it
[24:42] Speaker 3: all that well this year, But I think that's an
[24:46] Speaker 3: interesting angle to unpack. We've clearly talked enough about the
[24:50] Speaker 3: Miami pass rush for folks listening and watching to this,
[24:53] Speaker 3: you know where we stand.
[24:54] Speaker 2: It's obviously very good.
[24:55] Speaker 3: It didn't really come into play against Ole miss or
[24:58] Speaker 3: missed it a good job mitigating that, but you can
[25:01] Speaker 3: expect that they're going to try to bring the house
[25:03] Speaker 3: or at least do something to get Fernanda Mendoza out
[25:05] Speaker 3: of rhythm.
[25:05] Speaker 2: He didn't look out of rythm at.
[25:06] Speaker 3: All in this game, and when he did, he ran
[25:09] Speaker 3: for you know, twenty eight yards, had that big twenty
[25:12] Speaker 3: one yard er at one point earlier in the game.
[25:15] Speaker 3: So I'm curious to see that side of it. I'm
[25:17] Speaker 3: curious to see if Miami continues to lean on their
[25:20] Speaker 3: ground attack. I really like the Miami offensive line. I
[25:26] Speaker 3: still think they could get a little bit of push,
[25:29] Speaker 3: enough of a push up front against this Indiana defensive
[25:32] Speaker 3: front that they can make some hay on the ground.
[25:35] Speaker 3: But it's a matter of what can they do beyond that?
[25:38] Speaker 3: You know what, what is it going to look like
[25:40] Speaker 3: beyond that? Even in the game that we saw on
[25:44] Speaker 3: Thursday against Old Miss, there were a few of those
[25:46] Speaker 3: throws that, you you know, tight window throws for Carson Beck.
[25:50] Speaker 3: Let's say that, Yeah, it could have easily gone in
[25:57] Speaker 3: the other directions. So I'm but there were at least
[26:00] Speaker 3: for the other way. They're at least for the other way,
[26:02] Speaker 3: and that ultimately, I think is what sank or Miss.
[26:05] Speaker 3: But I'm just I'm curious to see what the second
[26:08] Speaker 3: pitch is for Miami. We know they've got Malachi Tony,
[26:11] Speaker 3: we know they've got playmakers out wide, and they're they're very,
[26:13] Speaker 3: very good along the trenches as well. But for me,
[26:16] Speaker 3: the two things I think I'm most curious about are
[26:19] Speaker 3: Miami's pass rush, how they bring pressure on Mendoza, and
[26:22] Speaker 3: then what their offense looks like if they are able
[26:24] Speaker 3: to get a push up front. And I'll just say,
[26:26] Speaker 3: speaking from experience, we have done this now since two
[26:29] Speaker 3: thousand and eight. Generally, when all your questions are on
[26:32] Speaker 3: one side of the matchup, that's not good for that team.
[26:35] Speaker 3: Does it mean they can't win? But I would say
[26:38] Speaker 3: more often than not, at least in the games that
[26:40] Speaker 3: I've picked, it tends to go the other direction. So
[26:42] Speaker 3: right now I would have a heavy lean on the
[26:44] Speaker 3: Indiana Hoosiers.
[26:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, I feel the same way. It's it's also still
[26:48] Speaker 1: amazing that Indiana's accomplishing this, not just the time thing,
[26:52] Speaker 1: but they're like bringing in next year's team right now.
[26:55] Speaker 1: They're recruiting next year's team, like we have to imagine
[27:00] Speaker 1: that well, like Josh Hoover is going to be next year,
[27:03] Speaker 1: is like murderous cyborg at quarterback, Like they did this
[27:07] Speaker 1: to like an eighty five percent level with Ohio's quarterback,
[27:13] Speaker 1: with Curtis Rourke, who was hurt, who was hurt, who
[27:16] Speaker 1: hurt his thumb and came into the season hurt. Now
[27:18] Speaker 1: they had a knee injury, and so I don't know.
[27:22] Speaker 2: I just.
[27:24] Speaker 1: Is it gonna last forever? Probably not. But will they
[27:27] Speaker 1: be a sort of death machine to an impressive extent
[27:31] Speaker 1: for the time being? I think so, yeah, like until
[27:35] Speaker 1: proven otherwise. I don't know how you discount what has
[27:37] Speaker 1: happened so far. They're gonna they're gonna keep doing it
[27:41] Speaker 1: like this. They're going to keep attacking the portal. They'll
[27:43] Speaker 1: develop younger players as well to complement the whole thing.
[27:47] Speaker 1: But no, it's it's all incredible, and it's a unicorn.
[27:51] Speaker 3: It is.
[27:52] Speaker 1: It's one of those things too where you're just like,
[27:54] Speaker 1: how do you replicate Kurt Signetta? You don't. How do
[27:57] Speaker 1: you approximate Kurt Signetta? You don't. And I think it's
[28:02] Speaker 1: foolish to say, like, who is that next guy, Who
[28:04] Speaker 1: is that next small school coach, Who is that next
[28:07] Speaker 1: disciple of some sort of legendary coach that can bring
[28:11] Speaker 1: that line of thinking and that line of attention to
[28:13] Speaker 1: detail to our team. It's the wrong way of thinking
[28:17] Speaker 1: about it. Just hire the best guy you possibly can
[28:20] Speaker 1: and hope for the best, because thinking of like how
[28:24] Speaker 1: to make our own version of this, I think is
[28:26] Speaker 1: just so futile, and I think it's going to get
[28:29] Speaker 1: people fired. But I don't know. It's it's crazy to behold.
[28:35] Speaker 2: Your final score again is fifty six to twenty two.
[28:38] Speaker 3: The Indiana Hoosias stay unbeaten again, the only undefeated team
[28:42] Speaker 3: still in college football. They are going down to hard
[28:44] Speaker 3: Rock Stadium to scare off against the Miami Hurricanes. That
[28:47] Speaker 3: game is on January the nineteenth. We of course will
[28:51] Speaker 3: preview that over the next week or so. Oor next episode,
[28:55] Speaker 3: the one coming up on Sunday, is going to be
[28:57] Speaker 3: Transfer Portal episode to the Friend Max also, and I
[29:00] Speaker 3: got to go through and edit it because we recorded
[29:02] Speaker 3: it on Thursday and there's been some movement in the
[29:05] Speaker 3: Transfer Portal since then.
[29:07] Speaker 2: So we're gonna go.
[29:07] Speaker 3: We're gonna give that nice little power cleaning to make
[29:10] Speaker 3: sure that the stuff that people are listening to isn't
[29:12] Speaker 3: going to be wildly out of date and it's still
[29:14] Speaker 3: relevant and interesting and worthwhile of your subscription or your
[29:19] Speaker 3: follow on your podcasting app of choice. Yes, I did
[29:23] Speaker 3: want to close this out though by giving you one
[29:26] Speaker 3: final bite at the Oregon Apple.
[29:28] Speaker 1: Okay, because to a postseason recap, well, you.
[29:32] Speaker 3: Said something that that is sticking with me, and that
[29:37] Speaker 3: is you're tired tired of seasons ending like this. Yeah,
[29:41] Speaker 3: and my suspicion is there are probably people tuning in
[29:45] Speaker 3: right now who want me to dunk on you or
[29:50] Speaker 3: want to hear the pain in your voice after your
[29:53] Speaker 3: beloved Orgon Ducts was was by thirty four in the National.
[29:57] Speaker 1: To be clear, I didn't call these plays. I didn't
[30:00] Speaker 1: with these players.
[30:00] Speaker 3: But yeah, but my hunch is that even if you're
[30:04] Speaker 3: not tuning in for that, regardless of who you root for,
[30:08] Speaker 3: you have been in this situation where the season ends
[30:11] Speaker 3: on a really embarrassing or otherwise disappointing note, and so
[30:15] Speaker 3: your words of wisdom in this moment probably go a
[30:18] Speaker 3: lot further than you're willing to admit.
[30:21] Speaker 1: Okay, I want as I speak to Oregon fans or
[30:24] Speaker 1: any fans of a team ending the season in a deflating,
[30:28] Speaker 1: disheartening way, I.
[30:29] Speaker 3: Want you to get it all out because when I
[30:32] Speaker 3: messaged you in the second quarter, you said you were thinking,
[30:35] Speaker 3: first off, you were drinking, and secondly you were thinking
[30:39] Speaker 3: of wandering into the deep dark abyss that is Lake Michigan.
[30:42] Speaker 2: Yeah, so with that as the precursor, m let's hear it. Well,
[30:49] Speaker 2: let's your rant.
[30:50] Speaker 1: So the rand is basically when you spend ten days
[30:56] Speaker 1: or so, however many days it's been since the Texas
[30:58] Speaker 1: Tech game thinking about this game, previewing this game, going
[31:01] Speaker 1: on other shows, talking about this game, thinking about different
[31:04] Speaker 1: ways this game could go, and in my case, hoping
[31:07] Speaker 1: for the best for Oregon, like, well, they have to
[31:10] Speaker 1: play clean. You know, Dante's going to have to get
[31:12] Speaker 1: more comfortable with the Indiana pass rush. And then like
[31:15] Speaker 1: the running back situation happens where they're losing guys and
[31:18] Speaker 1: you're like, well, you know they still have deer Hill.
[31:21] Speaker 1: Jay Harris can be pretty good. It's a good offensive
[31:23] Speaker 1: line in front of him. Will Stein has called a
[31:25] Speaker 1: really good offense these past three years for Oregon. You know,
[31:28] Speaker 1: these receivers are healthy, with Malik Benson and Jeremiah McClellan
[31:31] Speaker 1: sort of breaking through and the back third of the
[31:33] Speaker 1: season something like that. And you know Jamari Johnson at
[31:36] Speaker 1: tight end is a big second tight end option and
[31:39] Speaker 1: then the defense pitching a shutout against Texas Tech, a
[31:42] Speaker 1: team we all agreed was like a top four or
[31:43] Speaker 1: five team, And you say to yourself, like, they could
[31:46] Speaker 1: probably put together sixty really strong minutes and put themselves
[31:51] Speaker 1: in a position to at least compete to win this
[31:53] Speaker 1: game and stay in this game and maybe catch a
[31:55] Speaker 1: break or two a turnover something like that. And you
[31:58] Speaker 1: sort of talk yourself into the ability to compete in
[32:02] Speaker 1: an improved way against a team that you fell short against.
[32:06] Speaker 1: And when the game starts and it's an immediate pick six, and.
[32:15] Speaker 2: It was like in our discord, it was like, oh, no,
[32:20] Speaker 2: here we go, here we go. This is not gonna
[32:23] Speaker 2: end well.
[32:24] Speaker 1: Where you're just like they immediately or Dante more was
[32:29] Speaker 1: immediate or what the receiver, the whatever, the moment was
[32:33] Speaker 1: immediately too big for Orgon. The mistakes happened, and Oregon
[32:37] Speaker 1: actually they marched down the field and you know, convert
[32:39] Speaker 1: a bunch of third downs and you know, get in
[32:41] Speaker 1: the end zone.
[32:42] Speaker 2: They rebound.
[32:42] Speaker 3: Well, they went three for three on third downs on
[32:44] Speaker 3: that next drive they put it was like a fourteen
[32:47] Speaker 3: play drive or something like that. That yeah, eight about
[32:50] Speaker 3: seven seven and a half minutes off the clock went
[32:53] Speaker 3: seventy five yards. You didn't notice any hints of panic, right,
[32:57] Speaker 3: they showed the clip, but we'll sign on the sidelines
[32:59] Speaker 3: to seem completely unfazed.
[33:00] Speaker 2: Dante looked good. Yeah, they did answer the moment, at
[33:05] Speaker 2: least that one moment after.
[33:07] Speaker 1: The pick six. Yeah, it's it's tough because watching this
[33:11] Speaker 1: year's Oregon team against the best teams that they played
[33:16] Speaker 1: on this schedule, to whatever extent, right, Indiana was obviously
[33:19] Speaker 1: being the best that they played twice. They didn't put
[33:22] Speaker 1: together like, oh they just beat that team thirty five thirteen,
[33:25] Speaker 1: and that's a really good team. Like, they just didn't
[33:27] Speaker 1: put together complete games against good teams. And some of
[33:30] Speaker 1: it was whether some of it was whatever circumstance. But
[33:33] Speaker 1: that was the thing that I wish I had paid
[33:35] Speaker 1: more attention to. But in hindsight, it's just like Orgon's
[33:40] Speaker 1: number three four team in the country. It's pretty good.
[33:44] Speaker 1: They lost to a team this season. One team is
[33:47] Speaker 1: the only team they lost to is the team they
[33:50] Speaker 1: didn't end up losing to a losable Iowa game team. Whatever.
[33:56] Speaker 1: It was sloppy at times against teams like Washington and
[33:59] Speaker 1: USC whatever.
[34:00] Speaker 2: Could have lost to Penn State on the road at night.
[34:03] Speaker 1: Absolutely almost gave that game away to Penn State. They
[34:05] Speaker 1: almost gave away that lead and pulled it out in
[34:07] Speaker 1: double overtime. But there is something in this moment, And
[34:12] Speaker 1: I thought about this last year against Ohio State where
[34:14] Speaker 1: I was just like, they need like a sixty two
[34:17] Speaker 1: year old, grizzled coach on defense who is just like
[34:22] Speaker 1: like they needed not maybe not Jim Knowles, but they
[34:25] Speaker 1: needed somebody like of Kurt Signetti's generation. Not Kurt Signetti.
[34:30] Speaker 1: There's only one of those to go around. But like
[34:32] Speaker 1: I think about like the coaches all being on the
[34:34] Speaker 1: younger side, and you know, the recruiting has been great,
[34:38] Speaker 1: the portaling has been great, and there's just like even
[34:41] Speaker 1: Dan Lanning himself, every year he's gotten better, right, rins
[34:44] Speaker 1: ten games his first year, including the Bowl win, and
[34:48] Speaker 1: then you know, goes to the What Fiesta Bowl and
[34:51] Speaker 1: then goes to the Rose Bowl and lose Toio State.
[34:54] Speaker 1: Like every year he's stacking, he wins the Big ten,
[34:56] Speaker 1: he makes it to the Final four, like every year
[34:58] Speaker 1: is a growth year for Dan Lanning's But at the
[35:01] Speaker 1: end of these last couple you're just like he's not
[35:04] Speaker 1: James Franklin. He's above that level. He's won big games,
[35:08] Speaker 1: you know, beat Ohio State and Eugene or whatever. But like,
[35:11] Speaker 1: when it comes to this moment, what is that last
[35:15] Speaker 1: thing that's completely lacking for this Oregon team?
[35:19] Speaker 2: He's the Kirby Smart of James Franklins.
[35:22] Speaker 1: He's the Kirby Smart of James Franklin. Sure where You're
[35:25] Speaker 1: just like, defenses can be really really good as a
[35:29] Speaker 1: ton of talented players portaled seemingly well with guys like
[35:32] Speaker 1: Dylan Thineman and Bear Alexander who performed and then on offense,
[35:36] Speaker 1: like you got Dante Morant be a top five pick
[35:39] Speaker 1: in the draft whenever it is that he goes. There's
[35:43] Speaker 1: talent everywhere, and he's just like, it makes me think
[35:47] Speaker 1: about the best players versus the right players, and when
[35:51] Speaker 1: you have the best right players, you get something special.
[35:55] Speaker 1: I think Oregon is finding a lot of really really good,
[35:59] Speaker 1: high level players that you can say are like the
[36:01] Speaker 1: best players at their position in like this draft class,
[36:04] Speaker 1: or in a recruiting class, or in a portal class.
[36:07] Speaker 1: But it's a team game, and at a certain point
[36:13] Speaker 1: you're just like, what are we trying to do? How
[36:15] Speaker 1: do we find the best possible players for what we're
[36:17] Speaker 1: trying to do? And are we doing as good a
[36:19] Speaker 1: job at finding them, developing them, and unleashing them into
[36:24] Speaker 1: the universe in these huge moments. Again, they're a top
[36:27] Speaker 1: four team, sure, so you're talking about an extremely slim margin.
[36:32] Speaker 1: But when you're top four team and you lose number
[36:34] Speaker 1: one by thirty four, the margin feels a lot wider.
[36:39] Speaker 1: And so that to me is just like I live
[36:42] Speaker 1: in advantage lifestyle rooting for this program, but you're just like, man,
[36:47] Speaker 1: can they cut it any closer in moments like these?
[36:51] Speaker 1: I just I don't know. It's it's first world problems,
[36:54] Speaker 1: of course, or one percent of the one percent problems.
[36:57] Speaker 1: But I'm just telling you, with somebody who went to
[36:58] Speaker 1: the school, who cares deeply about this football team winning,
[37:02] Speaker 1: you know you hope to close the gap in a
[37:04] Speaker 1: moment like this, and again the pick six, Dante Moore's
[37:08] Speaker 1: hand hitting Dierre Hill on an RPO and you know,
[37:11] Speaker 1: causing that fumble like just like man it On one hand,
[37:17] Speaker 1: maybe it'll feel so much sweeter given that I'm going
[37:20] Speaker 1: through this. If it ever happens for Oregon, the nectar
[37:24] Speaker 1: will be so delectable. But I don't know, man, it's
[37:30] Speaker 1: it's not gonna be a fun sleep tonight. If that
[37:33] Speaker 1: makes sense. I don't know. Does any of that make sense?
[37:37] Speaker 3: It does, it does, and I think it only underscores
[37:42] Speaker 3: the point that I mentioned earlier from our friend Ben Jones. Yeah,
[37:47] Speaker 3: how Indiana getting the right guy who knows how to
[37:53] Speaker 3: get it go out and get the right players for
[37:55] Speaker 3: his scheme. It feels like you always say alignment. This
[37:59] Speaker 3: is alignment in all caps. You know, from top to bottom,
[38:03] Speaker 3: everybody has bought in. They play outstanding team football. They
[38:08] Speaker 3: do not beat themselves. It is not necessarily about getting
[38:12] Speaker 3: the top of the top in terms of name brand talent.
[38:15] Speaker 3: It's about getting the guys who produce and the guys
[38:18] Speaker 3: who go out there and can be part of a
[38:19] Speaker 3: larger thing. And that's not to say Oregon or anybody
[38:22] Speaker 3: else doesn't do that, but Indiana right now is doing
[38:25] Speaker 3: it way better. And so there is that side of
[38:28] Speaker 3: it that I think has left a lot of college
[38:30] Speaker 3: football puzzled, even Indiana fans puzzled as to how he
[38:33] Speaker 3: is doing this so quickly. The other thought that came
[38:36] Speaker 3: to mind just with again, I keep using the word inevitability.
[38:39] Speaker 3: But that's just how I feel watching the Indiana Hoosiers.
[38:43] Speaker 3: If you were to tell me ten years from now
[38:45] Speaker 3: that Connor Stallions is secretly working for Indiana and picking
[38:48] Speaker 3: off players for opponents, I think the thing is, I
[38:51] Speaker 3: think I would believe that. That's how prepared Indiana seems.
[38:54] Speaker 3: I'm not saying they're cheating, but they feel so prepared
[38:57] Speaker 3: and so ready for everything. In point what is it,
[39:01] Speaker 3: fourth and one, fourth and two, Maybe a dumb play call,
[39:04] Speaker 3: but the full back dive fake pitch toss out to
[39:07] Speaker 3: Jay Harris that Oregon tried earlier in the game. That
[39:10] Speaker 3: was one of the tackles full one of the ten
[39:12] Speaker 3: tackles from Lost Indiana had in this game. They talked
[39:15] Speaker 3: about how Oregon has shown that look many times over,
[39:18] Speaker 3: that full back dive they ran, that little pitch play.
[39:22] Speaker 2: Indiana was there. Indiana knew it was coming.
[39:24] Speaker 3: It looked like you watched the above you from the
[39:28] Speaker 3: spider cam and everybody just crashed the right side of
[39:31] Speaker 3: that line. They're so well prepared that it feels like
[39:33] Speaker 3: they know what's coming. And that's a whole other side
[39:36] Speaker 3: of it. That's not even about getting the right guys,
[39:38] Speaker 3: that's about preparing in a way.
[39:40] Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's not listening on the radio. That's actually
[39:43] Speaker 1: just watching the tape. I get it, Oregon, does I
[39:45] Speaker 1: get it.
[39:46] Speaker 3: I'm just saying they're so well prepared that that is
[39:49] Speaker 3: also an added layer to this, that despite the fact
[39:53] Speaker 3: that they're doing it with a lot of transfers and
[39:56] Speaker 3: a coaching staff that clearly deserves to be compensated for
[39:59] Speaker 3: the job they're doing, their ability and the player's ability
[40:04] Speaker 3: to stay this locked in and prepared for pretty much
[40:07] Speaker 3: all the games we've seen over the last six weeks
[40:09] Speaker 3: or so, that part of it is perhaps the hardest
[40:12] Speaker 3: part to replicate.
[40:13] Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, totally agree. Anyway, have fun with your offense, Kentucky.
[40:18] Speaker 1: I'm sure it's going to be not predictable at all.
[40:21] Speaker 1: Salty Dan, we could do a saulty Dan efs good
[40:23] Speaker 1: right point. Listen, I'm sure it'll be good. I'm sure
[40:25] Speaker 1: they're gonna win a ton of games at Kentucky and
[40:27] Speaker 1: the offense is going to be incredible.
[40:29] Speaker 2: So yeah, why don't we leave it at that, folks.
[40:33] Speaker 3: Dan, I'm sorry, it's a tough way to go down,
[40:35] Speaker 3: but we've got a big one left. I know we're
[40:37] Speaker 3: both excited to watch Indiana square off against Miami, your
[40:41] Speaker 3: final here on Friday evening in the Chick fil A
[40:44] Speaker 3: Peach Bowl, fifty six to twenty two. Indiana wins in
[40:49] Speaker 3: resounding fashion, again the only undefeated team still standing in
[40:54] Speaker 3: college football. We will have ten days to break down
[40:58] Speaker 3: all that is to come in the final game of
[41:01] Speaker 3: the college football season. As I mentioned, we've got a
[41:03] Speaker 3: portal show. We've got a couple episodes between now and then.
[41:07] Speaker 3: Hit follow, hit subscribe. If you made it this far,
[41:09] Speaker 3: we'd love to have you along with.
[41:11] Speaker 2: Us for the way.
[41:13] Speaker 3: Yes that go over there, Dan, myself tied. Dan, enjoy
[41:17] Speaker 3: your evening, get some sleep, all right. I will try
[41:19] Speaker 3: my best, do your best to say solid
[41:22] Speaker 1: Thank
