In this episode, we're joined by Cole Cubelic (SEC Network, McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning, The Cube Show) for an SEC vibe check. It's not a preview, just the temperature of the conference in late April. Cole pulls no punches on the reality facing SEC fan bases: Nick Saban's standards aren't coming back, sub-goals like winning the conference have been devalued, and we've collectively forgotten what a genuinely successful season looks like. Plus, we dive in the strange Kalen DeBoer hot seat chatter, Shane Beamer's underrated portal wizardry at South Carolina, why the Alex Golesh hire at Auburn matters more than who left in the portal, Texas's need for hard-hat glue guys to pair with its sports cars, and whether Lane Kiffin's LSU rebuild can actually cohere in year one. We also discuss the loss of program continuity in the transfer portal era, the new nine-game SEC schedule as a gauntlet-within-a-gauntlet, and a big wave of defensive coordinator turnover that could make September interesting. [0:02] Speaker 1: Welcome to the solid verbal Hell.
[0:05] Speaker 2: For me, I'm a man, I'm forty. I've heard so
[0:08] Speaker 2: many players say, well, I want to be happy.
[0:10] Speaker 1: You want to be happy for a day at the stake?
[0:13] Speaker 2: Is that whoo whoom.
[0:14] Speaker 3: And Dan and tie.
[0:18] Speaker 1: Dan Rubinstein.
[0:19] Speaker 3: It is time to do a little bit of a
[0:21] Speaker 3: vibe check today, is it not?
[0:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, buddy, Yes, it absolutely is. We're doing SEC vibe
[0:26] Speaker 1: checking with the SEC networks Paul Kublick. Obviously. You can
[0:30] Speaker 1: also hear him on the radio with Greg McElroy w
[0:34] Speaker 1: j o X morning show there, and I think he
[0:38] Speaker 1: does a great job his economy of like words per second,
[0:44] Speaker 1: words per minute. He doesn't say like I just did,
[0:48] Speaker 1: He just goes.
[0:50] Speaker 3: He goes yeh yeah.
[0:51] Speaker 1: And so he is connected to fan bases and has
[0:55] Speaker 1: callers on his radio show. So his connective tissue to
[1:00] Speaker 1: the heartbeat of the conference, which of course is the
[1:03] Speaker 1: heartbeat of any conference, the heartbeat of any college football conversation.
[1:08] Speaker 1: It's the craziest and weirdest fans. And I say that lovingly.
[1:12] Speaker 1: He's got that, he's got that connection. So very excited
[1:15] Speaker 1: to speak with Cole just check not an SEC preview,
[1:18] Speaker 1: just checking in to see how people are feeling in
[1:22] Speaker 1: what late.
[1:23] Speaker 3: April, absolutely and his podcast is called The Cube Show.
[1:27] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he did an episode I want to say
[1:30] Speaker 3: about two weeks ago. Go back and listen to it
[1:32] Speaker 3: if you haven't where he brought on Jean Chiswick and
[1:37] Speaker 3: Austin Armstrong titled The State of Defense in College Football
[1:42] Speaker 3: and it was a fascinating listen so good that sounds
[1:44] Speaker 3: like it was like an hour and a half, and
[1:46] Speaker 3: not to give too much of the game away, but
[1:48] Speaker 3: it talked a lot about how defensive philosophy has shifted
[1:53] Speaker 3: away from just trying to play sound defense that bends
[1:57] Speaker 3: but doesn't break, to now the advantages of basically putting
[2:02] Speaker 3: together a high havoc defense, turnovers, tackle for loss, things
[2:06] Speaker 3: like that. I got a lot out of it. Cole
[2:08] Speaker 3: obviously has played the game at a really high level,
[2:10] Speaker 3: played for Auburn. We'll talk about that here in just
[2:12] Speaker 3: a minute or so. But I got a lot out
[2:14] Speaker 3: of that, And it's great to have guys like Cole
[2:17] Speaker 3: on this show who can speak to it knowledgeably as
[2:20] Speaker 3: somebody who has played the game, and his case cares
[2:23] Speaker 3: a lot about the trenches, which, as you know, it
[2:25] Speaker 3: all starts up front, right.
[2:27] Speaker 1: Always starts upfront. Point of attack? Is that what we're
[2:30] Speaker 1: talking about? You can talk about point of attack?
[2:31] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So go and check out the Cube show,
[2:34] Speaker 3: specifically that episode. If nothing more, we're pleased to have
[2:37] Speaker 3: Cole back on this show. Was about a year ago
[2:40] Speaker 3: that we last had up on the show. So we'll
[2:42] Speaker 3: talk through sec vibe, check hit fall, hit subscribe if
[2:46] Speaker 3: you are new here, if you have yet to do so,
[2:49] Speaker 3: we'd love to have you with us here in the
[2:52] Speaker 3: verballer hood. Of course. If you want to support directly
[2:55] Speaker 3: what Dan and I do, go to Verballers dot com.
[2:58] Speaker 3: V er B A L L e r s dot com.
[3:01] Speaker 3: I just got a note in the email actually that
[3:03] Speaker 3: I had had to renew it. Oh, that we didn't
[3:06] Speaker 3: lose forballers dot com.
[3:07] Speaker 1: Yes, very important, ty keep uh, keep our our URLs,
[3:12] Speaker 1: keep our domains tie, that's your the domain lord. That's
[3:16] Speaker 1: what have we bought any fun domains lately? I know
[3:19] Speaker 1: we have. At one point we had smell ties hair
[3:21] Speaker 1: doc I did.
[3:22] Speaker 3: I did renew smell Ties. You could say I'm the
[3:25] Speaker 3: master of our domain.
[3:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, you are the master of our web domains. That's nobody,
[3:30] Speaker 1: Nobody disputes.
[3:31] Speaker 3: This, Let's bring on Cole, let's talk through SEC vibes.
[3:35] Speaker 3: Let's regroup at the end and talk through what we learned.
[3:39] Speaker 1: And with that, obviously, it's our pleasure to welcome in
[3:42] Speaker 1: our old friend Cole Kublick from SEC Network. Obviously you
[3:46] Speaker 1: can hear him all over the fine state of Alabama
[3:49] Speaker 1: with Greg McElroy, who may not believe in technological advancements
[3:54] Speaker 1: of the mid twentieth century, who's to say, you know,
[3:58] Speaker 1: life continues, and you know, maybe we changed minds over
[4:02] Speaker 1: the course of time. But Cole, how are you doing?
[4:05] Speaker 2: I'm great, and I'm staying out of that conversation. I
[4:08] Speaker 2: don't want that blowback. I don't need it. I okay,
[4:11] Speaker 2: somebody made awful announcings day really easy that day.
[4:14] Speaker 1: So, dude, I was at the San Diego Zoo and
[4:17] Speaker 1: I started getting texts about your radio show and beliefs
[4:21] Speaker 1: about space exploration. I was like, what a world we
[4:24] Speaker 1: live in where I can look at pandas and get
[4:26] Speaker 1: updates on Cole having conversations about technology in the nineteen sixties.
[4:32] Speaker 2: I think it's never never have I mimicked Hanseling Gretel
[4:35] Speaker 2: more than on the radio that day. In my brain,
[4:40] Speaker 2: I'm saying, Okay, I gave him the out, and I said,
[4:43] Speaker 2: if you want to go down this path, I'll just
[4:45] Speaker 2: continue dropping the bread crumbs. Exactly here we go. I
[4:48] Speaker 2: will lead you right down it and you just do
[4:50] Speaker 2: what you gotta do. Thank you.
[4:52] Speaker 1: In the the beautiful state of Alabama, the space forward
[4:55] Speaker 1: state of Alabama, no less, but anyway, we're here to
[4:59] Speaker 1: talk SEC football. We're here to talk SEC vibes. This
[5:02] Speaker 1: is not an SEC season preview because that would be ridiculous,
[5:05] Speaker 1: as this is springtime and there are still battles all
[5:07] Speaker 1: over the place, and as you eloquently mentioned before we started,
[5:11] Speaker 1: nobody knows anything and that's Great's this is the fun
[5:14] Speaker 1: part of the conversational portion of the calendar. Here's my
[5:18] Speaker 1: first question, because I don't know this seems worthwhile in April.
[5:23] Speaker 1: What are the vibes like I guess, either inside the
[5:25] Speaker 1: SEC offices or among SEC fans or maybe inside SEC
[5:29] Speaker 1: programs as it relates to a national championship drought. Is
[5:34] Speaker 1: it a real conversation? Is it overblown?
[5:37] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's definitely not a real conversation because this is
[5:40] Speaker 2: the SEC we live in fantasyland most of the time. Here,
[5:43] Speaker 2: you know, the conference is always going to be bigger, stronger,
[5:46] Speaker 2: batter No one's ever going to be better. Every team
[5:48] Speaker 2: should win every game. There are never real reasons as
[5:51] Speaker 2: to why that person's team should lose a game or
[5:54] Speaker 2: not win a national championship. So I actually don't think
[5:58] Speaker 2: that that part of the conversation, and maybe it could
[6:00] Speaker 2: be fans just completely putting the blinders on ignoring that
[6:03] Speaker 2: intentionally not wanting to talk about it. I think some
[6:07] Speaker 2: of it is just the dose of reality of where
[6:09] Speaker 2: we are in today's collegiate athletics and that things are
[6:11] Speaker 2: just so different. And we talked about it in our
[6:14] Speaker 2: show plenty of times. I've talked about it on my podcast,
[6:16] Speaker 2: retraining our brains to where we are today, whether that
[6:20] Speaker 2: is a nine win season, you know, people want to
[6:22] Speaker 2: talk about Alabama season, Georgia season last year, some of
[6:25] Speaker 2: the letdowns. It's like, compared them to teams that did
[6:28] Speaker 2: advance in the playoffs more than they did. The records
[6:31] Speaker 2: are actually not that different opposite Indiana, who was immaculate
[6:35] Speaker 2: and unbelievable. But there's just so many aspects of roster retainment.
[6:39] Speaker 2: Depth on rosters, what a great, good, positive season is
[6:44] Speaker 2: for a lot of these fan bases, what realistically should
[6:47] Speaker 2: be expected from an accomplishment standpoint. You talk about Alabama,
[6:50] Speaker 2: they won a playoff game on the road, which under
[6:54] Speaker 2: normal circumstances is incredible. Ninety eight percent of college fans
[6:59] Speaker 2: would sign up for that every single year and never
[7:02] Speaker 2: ask a question. Yet Cale in to Bor is somehow
[7:05] Speaker 2: viewed as on some sort of hot seat by some people.
[7:07] Speaker 2: It's wild to imagine. So I do think that there's
[7:10] Speaker 2: a little bit of, Hey, we're just not going to
[7:12] Speaker 2: talk about that or pay attention to it because we
[7:14] Speaker 2: think we can do it again this year. Because we
[7:16] Speaker 2: were the best, we were the baddest for so long
[7:19] Speaker 2: that we still think that easily we're going to be
[7:21] Speaker 2: able to obtain that again.
[7:23] Speaker 1: What is the mood in Tuscaloosa right that, like you
[7:25] Speaker 1: have the the unrealistic expectations of every single fan base,
[7:30] Speaker 1: but not necessarily inside. But is the mood, Hey, we
[7:35] Speaker 1: know the back half of the season wasn't incredible last year,
[7:38] Speaker 1: but it's a new year with new players and transfers
[7:41] Speaker 1: and freshmen coming in. Do you get a sense that
[7:44] Speaker 1: everything is washed clean or do you get a sense that,
[7:48] Speaker 1: you know, people are more on edge than you'd think
[7:51] Speaker 1: they'd be considering, you know, playoff win.
[7:54] Speaker 2: You guys know this like I do. Fan is short
[7:57] Speaker 2: for fanatic, and we have tiers of fan bases and
[8:00] Speaker 2: it is the completely ridiculous. And this one is more
[8:03] Speaker 2: difficult because we in our lifetimes, some people too, in
[8:08] Speaker 2: their lifetimes have seen a head coach at that place
[8:11] Speaker 2: do things that no one else will ever do, and
[8:14] Speaker 2: so the comparative game is always going to be played.
[8:16] Speaker 2: It's unfortunate, it should not be real. It should not
[8:18] Speaker 2: happen because of the other things we talked about in
[8:20] Speaker 2: college football, You're not going to be able to do
[8:23] Speaker 2: those things anymore. They are not obtainable. Nick Saban statistics
[8:27] Speaker 2: are not obtainable in today's college athletics. They're just not
[8:31] Speaker 2: Neither are maybe even Urban Myers at Florida or a
[8:35] Speaker 2: laundry list of other tom Osborne's at Nebraska are not
[8:38] Speaker 2: going to be replicated. Bobby Bowden, that Florida State is
[8:41] Speaker 2: not doable. Again, it just isn't. So I think just
[8:44] Speaker 2: the understanding, the coming to Jesus with that is not
[8:48] Speaker 2: going to happen for a lot of people, specifically Alabama fans,
[8:50] Speaker 2: they're going to hold onto that expectation of national championship
[8:54] Speaker 2: or bust every year. It's great that you want that,
[8:57] Speaker 2: but you have to sprinkle in a small dose of
[9:00] Speaker 2: reality every now and then as just to you don't
[9:04] Speaker 2: have nineteen out of twenty two players that are just
[9:08] Speaker 2: flat better than every other team you're gonna play. It's
[9:10] Speaker 2: not real anymore. It just isn't. So that makes it
[9:13] Speaker 2: difficult to understand that. I do think there is a
[9:16] Speaker 2: portion of the fan base that gets all of that
[9:19] Speaker 2: and understands we're not the biggest, baddest, strongest every week.
[9:23] Speaker 2: Also that have you defeated when we take the field.
[9:28] Speaker 2: Mindset is not very real anymore either, And whether that
[9:31] Speaker 2: is the logo, the tradition, the university, or how bad
[9:34] Speaker 2: they beat the two teams the two prior weeks, those
[9:37] Speaker 2: things don't exist anymore. There's too many players from too
[9:40] Speaker 2: many other teams that have seen it, done it, been
[9:43] Speaker 2: there on other spots, or talked about it, or played
[9:45] Speaker 2: against it that can share with other people that it
[9:47] Speaker 2: just doesn't exist to that extent anymore. But there's also
[9:51] Speaker 2: a large portion of that fan base that expects to
[9:53] Speaker 2: at least compete for or win national championships. I also
[9:56] Speaker 2: think too, this isn't just Alabama. But one thing that
[10:00] Speaker 2: hurts these expectations, if you will, is some of the
[10:05] Speaker 2: sub goals have been deteriorated to the point where they
[10:09] Speaker 2: don't assist in this anymore. When I played college football,
[10:12] Speaker 2: we wanted to win our division and then win the SEC.
[10:15] Speaker 2: Everything else was happenstance after that would have loup to
[10:17] Speaker 2: won a national title. But I played in two SEC
[10:20] Speaker 2: championship games. Those are probably the two biggest games I
[10:22] Speaker 2: played in because the ultimate goal is getting that SEC
[10:24] Speaker 2: championship ring. It was also a very different time as
[10:27] Speaker 2: to how the Big Ten, how the SEC, then some
[10:31] Speaker 2: the Big East, the ACC then were all viewed, pack
[10:34] Speaker 2: ten PAC twelve was viewed at that time. There was
[10:36] Speaker 2: all very different the landscape of college football. So a
[10:39] Speaker 2: national championship was a lot of times not even seen
[10:42] Speaker 2: as a possibility or a reality until Spurrier started doing
[10:45] Speaker 2: things at Florida. Then Tennessee came along and did it,
[10:48] Speaker 2: and that started a whole new cycle of things that
[10:50] Speaker 2: were going to potentially take place. So I think an
[10:54] Speaker 2: SEC championship don't have divisions anymore. But winning the SEC?
[10:58] Speaker 2: Where is that even with fans this day? I don't see.
[11:02] Speaker 2: I think it's awesome that Kirby still loves it and
[11:04] Speaker 2: that Kirby puts an emphasis on it, and he played
[11:06] Speaker 2: when I played, so we have that similar sort of
[11:08] Speaker 2: emphasis on what it was. I haven't heard a lot
[11:10] Speaker 2: of Georgia fans tooting the horn of winning the SEC
[11:12] Speaker 2: this offseason. I haven't seen that. I haven't seen a
[11:15] Speaker 2: lot of brag tweets about how we won the SEC.
[11:20] Speaker 2: I damn sure. I haven't seen it from the ACC
[11:22] Speaker 2: because you had a team that didn't even play in
[11:24] Speaker 2: it go play for a national championship. So I don't
[11:28] Speaker 2: some of the sub goals be it ten wins season,
[11:31] Speaker 2: going to a bowl game, going to a New Year
[11:33] Speaker 2: six bowl game, which is not even real anymore because
[11:35] Speaker 2: most of those are playoff games. The other goals that
[11:39] Speaker 2: we have, like you take a team like Illinois, they
[11:42] Speaker 2: had a historic season in terms of their program last year,
[11:47] Speaker 2: yet are outside of Champagne. Not a lot of people
[11:51] Speaker 2: will ever discuss that that way because they just are
[11:54] Speaker 2: not allowed to view that as being hyper successful. Brett
[11:58] Speaker 2: and his crew and the fans of that team that
[12:02] Speaker 2: have not witnessed a lot of non win seasons should
[12:04] Speaker 2: absolutely view that that way as man, we're so proud.
[12:08] Speaker 2: That's amazing, celebrated you should. I want you to, but
[12:12] Speaker 2: we've been desensitized to so many of these other goals
[12:15] Speaker 2: are sub goals in college football, And honestly, what's really
[12:19] Speaker 2: sad is not even making the playoffs anymore. Like now,
[12:21] Speaker 2: it's you have to advance some or else. We just
[12:24] Speaker 2: don't even care, like I don't. A and M fans
[12:27] Speaker 2: aren't super excited about that season how it went disappointing
[12:31] Speaker 2: as far as not advancing, I get it, but you
[12:33] Speaker 2: are in the playoff. That should be celebrated for eternity
[12:37] Speaker 2: because it's a very difficult thing to do. And I
[12:40] Speaker 2: think that also plays into some of these expectations and
[12:42] Speaker 2: maybe how how to whack they ar at certain places.
[12:45] Speaker 1: I want to flip it real quick, just because I
[12:47] Speaker 1: think everything you said is correct. I assume you've seen
[12:50] Speaker 1: the movie The Sandlot. There's a scene where Small's is sick, overrated, overrated, interesting.
[12:56] Speaker 2: Sorry I'm not a fan of it, but I have
[12:58] Speaker 2: seen it.
[12:58] Speaker 1: There is a scene where Small's the small kid with
[13:02] Speaker 1: the glasses get sick of the lotioning and the oiling
[13:05] Speaker 1: and the oiling and the lotioning of the lifeguard Wendy Peppercorn.
[13:08] Speaker 1: You'd have to have a cold heart to not find
[13:10] Speaker 1: at least the beginning of that part movie and the
[13:13] Speaker 1: beginning of that scene funny. Who would be the antsist
[13:17] Speaker 1: fan base that You're like, I get it, I get
[13:20] Speaker 1: why you're so antsy. You're seeing the same thing over
[13:22] Speaker 1: and over again without like clear improvement. And obviously we
[13:27] Speaker 1: have new coaches, and maybe that's why. Obviously that's why
[13:30] Speaker 1: things were changed. But I guess of the returning coaches
[13:33] Speaker 1: and returning situations, like who's antsiness, You're like, yeah, I
[13:37] Speaker 1: get that.
[13:38] Speaker 2: If it wasn't returning coaches, I would have said Arkansas. Yeah.
[13:41] Speaker 2: But and the main reason for that would be is
[13:44] Speaker 2: and I don't think it's their fault. I think it's
[13:46] Speaker 2: the observers of college football, the SEC, and the Arkansas
[13:50] Speaker 2: program's fault. Because when nil became a real thing, we
[13:53] Speaker 2: all just started handing them championships. Because the Waltons were
[13:56] Speaker 2: going to step up, Tyson Chicken was going to step up.
[13:59] Speaker 2: All these Fortune five companies were just going to start
[14:01] Speaker 2: rowing out these giant checks, and Arkansas is about to
[14:03] Speaker 2: steal the game. They're about to take it for everybody.
[14:05] Speaker 2: And that's not fair because first and foremost, the Waltons
[14:09] Speaker 2: don't owe the Arkansas Athletic Department anything, and they already
[14:12] Speaker 2: probably do more than they technically should. The return on
[14:14] Speaker 2: that investment is probably not what is never going to
[14:17] Speaker 2: be something that a business person only would deem Worthwhile
[14:21] Speaker 2: now if you love Albert Arkansas Athletics, then absolutely have
[14:24] Speaker 2: that it. Go for it if that's your thing. As
[14:27] Speaker 2: far as the returning teams, the returners in the league,
[14:30] Speaker 2: we have so many new coaches that's kind of difficult.
[14:33] Speaker 1: Missoo Tennessee.
[14:35] Speaker 2: I was gonna say Missouri, but you also that's one
[14:38] Speaker 2: that I look at and say, it had been a
[14:41] Speaker 2: minute since you had been there, and the things that
[14:43] Speaker 2: have happened have actually been really good, and you still
[14:48] Speaker 2: haven't had that many players on that level to say, well,
[14:51] Speaker 2: we should be where Georgia is, or we should be
[14:52] Speaker 2: where Texas is. Like I think Drink is still overachieved
[14:56] Speaker 2: even with softer schedules that he has benefitted from greatly,
[15:00] Speaker 2: and some late season mishaps of games that they had
[15:04] Speaker 2: chances to win. I would still say that you should
[15:06] Speaker 2: probably look at that as better than what it probably
[15:10] Speaker 2: would have been with a lot of other people in
[15:12] Speaker 2: that situation.
[15:14] Speaker 1: South Carolina, South.
[15:15] Speaker 2: Carolina, you got to remember who you are. And this
[15:20] Speaker 2: is the thing that I hate most about college football.
[15:24] Speaker 2: I think it has been maybe put in italics now
[15:27] Speaker 2: more than ever is we forget great andess faster than
[15:30] Speaker 2: anyone else in any other sport at any other time.
[15:32] Speaker 2: And part of that is because of the turnover. It
[15:34] Speaker 2: used to be we had these guys for maybe four
[15:37] Speaker 2: or five years. Then we had some for three. Now
[15:39] Speaker 2: we're lucky to have them for two sometimes one. So yeah,
[15:42] Speaker 2: we turned the page is now turned for us often
[15:45] Speaker 2: a lot. So I get it. But also like you
[15:49] Speaker 2: were knocking on the door of the playoff two years
[15:51] Speaker 2: ago and now you're going to talk about running this
[15:54] Speaker 2: guy there is it's very fair to say you have
[15:56] Speaker 2: a generational player on defense, a generational player on offense,
[15:59] Speaker 2: you need to make something happen with that. Totally fair,
[16:02] Speaker 2: I get it. I think Ken o'brides was a great hire.
[16:04] Speaker 2: I think Leonora Sewys has a chempce to take a
[16:06] Speaker 2: big step I think if their offensive line is healthy,
[16:09] Speaker 2: which unfortunately two are not going to be in the spring,
[16:11] Speaker 2: they have a chance to overcome a lot with solidifying
[16:14] Speaker 2: that specific position. Clayton White does not get the credit
[16:17] Speaker 2: he deserves as a defensive coordinator. So I think you
[16:20] Speaker 2: look at what see This is the part of where
[16:22] Speaker 2: I look at other things. I think Shane has done
[16:25] Speaker 2: more with less through the portal than anybody else yet.
[16:28] Speaker 2: Joshua Simon from Western Kentucky at tight end, no one
[16:30] Speaker 2: talked about that kid. I thought he's maybe the MVP
[16:32] Speaker 2: of the team. Two years ago. Rocket Centers was done.
[16:36] Speaker 2: He was done, he was banged up, he couldn't stay healthy.
[16:39] Speaker 2: He goes out there and has a great year. Remember
[16:40] Speaker 2: Spencer Ratler was like a mental problem. Like he was,
[16:43] Speaker 2: he had the egos too big to deal with and
[16:45] Speaker 2: like him, never succeed anywhere. He can't. He got run
[16:47] Speaker 2: out of there by Caleb Williams. Well he had a
[16:49] Speaker 2: pretty good run at South Carolina. I heard South Carolina
[16:52] Speaker 2: befan's boo, xavierly get end game and then comes back
[16:57] Speaker 2: and has an outstays not a portal guy, but out
[17:00] Speaker 2: mental guy. With what Juice Wells did when he left
[17:02] Speaker 2: South Carolina, not what he did when he was there.
[17:05] Speaker 2: So there are things he's doing that he deserves more
[17:08] Speaker 2: credit for. And we just become so trigger happy on
[17:12] Speaker 2: getting these coaches out. And I still say, even though
[17:15] Speaker 2: he was just fired, like Mitch Barnhardt, Mark Stoops should
[17:19] Speaker 2: sort of be the blueprint. Year two, year three. I
[17:21] Speaker 2: can't remember what's one it was. They all wanted him gone,
[17:23] Speaker 2: they all wanted him out of there, and they gave
[17:25] Speaker 2: him one more time, and he righted the ship and
[17:27] Speaker 2: he gave them seasons unlike only Bear Bryant had ever
[17:31] Speaker 2: delivered at that place. So I think there's a couple
[17:35] Speaker 2: that fit that category. I think Mississippi State is there
[17:38] Speaker 2: right now because they've had some good talent and they
[17:41] Speaker 2: have done some more with some guys that people probably
[17:43] Speaker 2: didn't expect. But there is a massive hurdle, that six
[17:48] Speaker 2: to seven win plateau that hasn't been crossed many times
[17:51] Speaker 2: in the last decade that I think they're probably sitting
[17:52] Speaker 2: there going, all right, we want our turned out. Tennessee's
[17:55] Speaker 2: got a little taste of it. They went to the playoffs,
[17:57] Speaker 2: so like y'all need to chill out too, because we
[18:00] Speaker 2: forget where this thing was four or five years ago.
[18:02] Speaker 2: Like on the you were the doormat almost at that
[18:06] Speaker 2: when Vanderbilt kind of took a little step, Tennessee was
[18:09] Speaker 2: arguably at the bottom of the league for a couple
[18:11] Speaker 2: of years. So you have to remember where you have
[18:14] Speaker 2: been recently.
[18:14] Speaker 1: Also, in my opinion, by the way, I'm getting a
[18:16] Speaker 1: lot of like vice principal vibes from Cole, Like the
[18:20] Speaker 1: school's been acting up and Cole has to sit everybody
[18:23] Speaker 1: down in the gymnas and be like, listen up at
[18:25] Speaker 1: all of you. Let's just take a beat and slow down.
[18:29] Speaker 1: Everything is fine. And I gotta say I'm a huge
[18:32] Speaker 1: fan of vice principal kublic. I love it. Okay, Yeah,
[18:35] Speaker 1: that's a new segment for your radio show.
[18:37] Speaker 3: Kind Of on that same note, Dan Cole, you did
[18:41] Speaker 3: do a little bit of a vice principal thing with
[18:43] Speaker 3: Auburn because a lot of portal departures, new coach coming in.
[18:49] Speaker 3: I'd imagine a fan base that has, you know, mixed
[18:53] Speaker 3: vibes on a number of different fronts. I think if
[18:56] Speaker 3: I am characterizing your position accurately with regards to Auburn,
[19:02] Speaker 3: a place where you played, yes, you don't want to
[19:05] Speaker 3: see guys walk out the door. Also a bit overblown. Also,
[19:10] Speaker 3: this obsession that people have with the portal should not
[19:13] Speaker 3: be taken with more than a grain of salt, given
[19:16] Speaker 3: that there is a new regime coming in. Were you
[19:19] Speaker 3: surprised by the hire? How do you feel about what
[19:22] Speaker 3: you have seen thus far from Auburn this spring.
[19:26] Speaker 2: I love what I've seen from Auburn this spring. I
[19:28] Speaker 2: am an Alex Goulish fan, have been since I got
[19:31] Speaker 2: to know him when he was the OC at Tennessee.
[19:33] Speaker 2: We had a handful of their games, and immediately I
[19:36] Speaker 2: thought to myself, this dude gets it. He understands it.
[19:39] Speaker 2: He's going to be He's gonna go places. The reason
[19:44] Speaker 2: it was a little bit of a surprise is because
[19:46] Speaker 2: I don't think that he was on top or near
[19:49] Speaker 2: the top of the leaderboard for the majority of that search.
[19:52] Speaker 2: And I do think some things sort of fell apart
[19:55] Speaker 2: late and there was a portion of him falling into
[19:59] Speaker 2: Auburn's lab. But that doesn't mean it's not a good hire.
[20:03] Speaker 2: Things can happen, things can happen circumstantially that still end
[20:06] Speaker 2: up being a positive and are good for all of
[20:08] Speaker 2: those involved, and I think this is one of them, which,
[20:10] Speaker 2: by the way, I got algorithms into the USF fans
[20:14] Speaker 2: yesterday with this whole like we're the same as Auburn
[20:17] Speaker 2: as far as winning the national title. Let's go back
[20:20] Speaker 2: to what we said a few minutes. Some people would
[20:21] Speaker 2: need to just have a little bit of recall of
[20:23] Speaker 2: who you are and where you are and what you are,
[20:25] Speaker 2: because that's just not real, and I'm not sure how
[20:27] Speaker 2: people can convince themselves that it is. I love the hire.
[20:31] Speaker 2: I think he is a football guy. Football guy. First.
[20:35] Speaker 2: There's a handful of guys in college football right now.
[20:37] Speaker 2: This is a little bit of a sidebar detour here
[20:39] Speaker 2: that people see what the offense is and they think
[20:43] Speaker 2: that they immediately go with the crowd that has been
[20:46] Speaker 2: or was at one point time soft that is also
[20:48] Speaker 2: classified with that offense. Jeff Levy is one of these guys.
[20:52] Speaker 2: Josh Haipel is one of these guys. Alex Skolish is
[20:55] Speaker 2: one of these guys. Everyone sees the receivers four inches
[20:57] Speaker 2: from each sideline and they see the vertical shot and
[21:00] Speaker 2: they just think, oh, he just wants to throw it
[21:01] Speaker 2: around the yard like no. Jeff Leby emphasizes the trenches
[21:06] Speaker 2: every single day, and his kids practice hard, and he
[21:08] Speaker 2: wants to win. At the line. He's a line of
[21:10] Speaker 2: screamers guy. He's aligneman by trade, so it's in his blood,
[21:14] Speaker 2: it's in his DNA. Alex's goal. The same way you're
[21:17] Speaker 2: gonna see the offense, you're gonna think, oh, you know,
[21:19] Speaker 2: this is like Gus mals On two point zero or whatever,
[21:21] Speaker 2: like this is just another Hugh Freeze, tricky offense trying
[21:24] Speaker 2: to you know, smoke him. It's not what he is
[21:26] Speaker 2: at all. Just because it is designed in a little
[21:28] Speaker 2: bit of a different way doesn't mean it's that as
[21:32] Speaker 2: far as the portal, guys go, I just I had
[21:35] Speaker 2: it was a moment that I was caught on microphone
[21:37] Speaker 2: that maybe I don't know, maybe I don't really care,
[21:40] Speaker 2: should or should not have been in my personal life,
[21:43] Speaker 2: in my public life, in my viewings of Auburn football
[21:49] Speaker 2: from a fan and coverage perspective, I just grew sick
[21:52] Speaker 2: of people thinking that Auburn could not take a single
[21:55] Speaker 2: solitary step forward. And I'll be honest with you, guys,
[21:57] Speaker 2: some of them was from the administration as well, that
[21:59] Speaker 2: there could literally be not a single step forward without
[22:02] Speaker 2: Cam Coleman and deuced night and it infuriated me. And
[22:05] Speaker 2: I don't know another way to say it, because I
[22:08] Speaker 2: am an offensive lineman by trade. I'm believe in you
[22:11] Speaker 2: have to work together and you have to build from within,
[22:14] Speaker 2: and there's never a single guy that goes out and
[22:16] Speaker 2: win you game, like we won the West with Rudy Johnson,
[22:18] Speaker 2: Heath Evans, Ben Leard, Ronnie Brown, Alex Lincoln, Rob Pate.
[22:22] Speaker 2: Like Rudy was awesome in the NFL. God rest his
[22:25] Speaker 2: soul and he we don't do that without him. But
[22:27] Speaker 2: I don't think he does that without us, Like I
[22:29] Speaker 2: don't think he plug him in any other SEC team
[22:31] Speaker 2: and they automatically go win the division, like Alabama didn't
[22:34] Speaker 2: win the division with Rudy that year. They didn't. So
[22:37] Speaker 2: I just believe that you have to build a team,
[22:39] Speaker 2: And it was part of the mindset that had crept
[22:42] Speaker 2: into a lot of Auburn fans of Oh, we have
[22:44] Speaker 2: to have this guy. Oh we have to have that guy. No,
[22:46] Speaker 2: you don't. You need a team like you need a foundation,
[22:49] Speaker 2: and the foundation of what you're going to be on
[22:52] Speaker 2: offense and defense has to be built to where it
[22:54] Speaker 2: can be sustainable, not let's lob it to this guy
[22:58] Speaker 2: and still lose at Vanderbilt, but he makes one handed
[23:00] Speaker 2: catches and wears pink ski masks congratulations. Like, I want
[23:03] Speaker 2: to win games. I don't want receptions, I don't want yards,
[23:07] Speaker 2: I don't want highlights. I want the school that I
[23:10] Speaker 2: love the most to compete for titles, and that is
[23:13] Speaker 2: not having a fast quarterback and a receiver that can
[23:16] Speaker 2: most people. Every now and then, there is a foundation
[23:19] Speaker 2: that must be built and set in order for that
[23:21] Speaker 2: to happen, specifically for that to consistently be attempted to
[23:27] Speaker 2: happen at all, which is so hard in today's college football.
[23:30] Speaker 2: So that's kind of what it was for me, is
[23:31] Speaker 2: just like, get off of this train of no one
[23:34] Speaker 2: can win without these two and it's nothing against them.
[23:36] Speaker 2: Kim Coleman's probably gonna have a big year. I actually
[23:38] Speaker 2: think Ryan Wingo is gonna have a bigger year because
[23:40] Speaker 2: of Kim Coleman. But he's a really good football player.
[23:44] Speaker 2: Duce Knight has an abundance of talent. And McElroy shut
[23:47] Speaker 2: me down when I asked the question on air, what
[23:49] Speaker 2: games did Auburn win because of these two guys? And
[23:51] Speaker 2: he immediately boards out Mercer, and you know what, he
[23:53] Speaker 2: was right, Duce Knight went crazy against Mercer. Congratulations. That's
[23:57] Speaker 2: not the win that I'm looking for on a consistent
[24:00] Speaker 2: I'd rather get a couple more against LSU Bama and
[24:03] Speaker 2: Georgia and Tennessee and the other SEC schools and the
[24:06] Speaker 2: non conschools that you're going to play that hopefully can
[24:08] Speaker 2: get you to the playoffs. So it wasn't really having
[24:11] Speaker 2: It didn't have a lot to do with those two individuals.
[24:13] Speaker 2: I think they can both be great. It's just that
[24:15] Speaker 2: you could have put any two names in there that
[24:17] Speaker 2: were on an Auburn uniform in an Auburn uniform last
[24:20] Speaker 2: year and always said the exact same thing. I don't
[24:22] Speaker 2: care where they go. Let's do what we can do
[24:25] Speaker 2: to help the next guy build the things that need
[24:27] Speaker 2: to be in place to go compete for championships, something
[24:29] Speaker 2: Auburn hasn't done in a very long time. We're You
[24:32] Speaker 2: can make the argument that Auburn is in the midst
[24:34] Speaker 2: of the worst five year stretch in the history of
[24:36] Speaker 2: its football program. It's wild, but when you put the
[24:38] Speaker 2: numbers out there, it's real. So there's not a guy
[24:42] Speaker 2: or two guys that are going to crawl them out
[24:44] Speaker 2: of that they're just not And also want guys that
[24:47] Speaker 2: act right, that play right, that do all the things.
[24:50] Speaker 2: That's why I throw their names out there, like Courtney
[24:52] Speaker 2: Taylor or Jimmy Bernard at Alabama, Parker Broiles for Alabama,
[24:55] Speaker 2: Like those are the guys like give me a heinz
[24:58] Speaker 2: Ward or an a Kwam Bolden. I'll my damn program
[25:00] Speaker 2: on those kind of guys. Yeah, but they out they're
[25:03] Speaker 2: out there trying to block people. They're trying to help
[25:05] Speaker 2: their team win. Like when I hear a coach say
[25:08] Speaker 2: I didn't need to make my guy captain because he
[25:09] Speaker 2: already does all those things. That's the guy that maybe
[25:12] Speaker 2: I'll make the foundation of my program.
[25:14] Speaker 3: Cole, I want to ask you about Texas. You mentioned
[25:17] Speaker 3: Cam Coleman Ryan Wingo. You've been consistently pretty high on
[25:21] Speaker 3: Texas throughout the coverage, at least that I have heard recently.
[25:25] Speaker 3: I know you like this team a lot. If we
[25:28] Speaker 3: are sort of framing this around vibes, I'm curious what
[25:31] Speaker 3: your antenna is picking up with respect to Texas and
[25:35] Speaker 3: the Texas fan base, because we heard a lot of
[25:37] Speaker 3: the same stuff last year, like, oh, sure, this could
[25:40] Speaker 3: be the year and so far, what I've been picking
[25:43] Speaker 3: up in some of my studying this offseason is no, no, no,
[25:47] Speaker 3: this is this is the year now, So where's the
[25:50] Speaker 3: fan base at I like Texas too, but I'm just
[25:54] Speaker 3: curious to get your perspective. Since I know you're high
[25:56] Speaker 3: on this team. What is it that you're detecting from
[25:59] Speaker 3: people that you talked to around this version of Texas
[26:02] Speaker 3: versus last year's version of Texas.
[26:04] Speaker 2: This is I think it's only going to get worse.
[26:07] Speaker 2: Unfortunately for Stark and his staff. The hype is it's
[26:12] Speaker 2: definitely not unwarranted at all because there are there are
[26:16] Speaker 2: proven sports cars on that football team.
[26:18] Speaker 3: Right Oh my god.
[26:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely. You look at Colin Simmons and what he's done.
[26:22] Speaker 2: You mentioned Wingo, obviously, you bring in cam Coleman. I
[26:25] Speaker 2: think arch Manning is absolutely one of those. I don't
[26:27] Speaker 2: think arch Manning gets enough credit for the development across
[26:31] Speaker 2: the course of the year that we saw with him.
[26:34] Speaker 2: I mean he was throwing he was throwing worm burners
[26:37] Speaker 2: early in the year, like everything was rushed, everything was overdone, overproduced, overthrown,
[26:41] Speaker 2: and I'll mean over the receiver just like it was like, ah,
[26:43] Speaker 2: it was. It was too much early. And I talk
[26:46] Speaker 2: all things about quarterbacks finding their calm, and until a
[26:49] Speaker 2: quarterback truly finds his calm, I don't think he can.
[26:52] Speaker 2: He could be great, and he started to find that
[26:54] Speaker 2: later in the year and that's why he was a
[26:56] Speaker 2: lot better. And we know Sarks tutel Is with quarterbacks
[27:00] Speaker 2: is always going to be great. Its just is his
[27:01] Speaker 2: offense is going to find mismatches. The two tackles goals
[27:05] Speaker 2: being those guys are going to have to be more
[27:06] Speaker 2: consistent than they were a year ago. The inability to
[27:08] Speaker 2: run the football was not great. The one scary part
[27:12] Speaker 2: about their team is I forget who the non con
[27:14] Speaker 2: team they played. It is like Illinois State or Utah Tech,
[27:20] Speaker 2: somebody they played earlier. It was the best individual tackling
[27:22] Speaker 2: performance I saw all season. I could not believe watching
[27:26] Speaker 2: the film and Roman Harper I told him this when
[27:28] Speaker 2: we did our show The Money Night. He was like,
[27:29] Speaker 2: get out of here, You're dumb. I'm like, go watch
[27:31] Speaker 2: it and just watch their defense and tell me there
[27:33] Speaker 2: were more one on one tackles made in that game
[27:36] Speaker 2: against a team in which one on one tackles should
[27:38] Speaker 2: not have been made than I have ever seen. And
[27:40] Speaker 2: Roman went back and watched it and he called me on
[27:42] Speaker 2: like Wednesday. He goes, dude, you were right. He goes,
[27:43] Speaker 2: this is embarrassing. Like throws in the flat with five
[27:46] Speaker 2: yards of space one on one tackle, you know, a
[27:49] Speaker 2: stretch zone with plenty of room to operate. Defensive end
[27:52] Speaker 2: comes off one on one tackle and you're like, Texas
[27:54] Speaker 2: guys are supposed to break those tackles and take it
[27:57] Speaker 2: for eighty or at least eight, and it wasn't happening.
[28:00] Speaker 2: So I do think that some of the changes that
[28:02] Speaker 2: Sark made that people look at the roster and say
[28:04] Speaker 2: what in the world. I think he wanted to try
[28:07] Speaker 2: and get a little bit more big time with his playmakers,
[28:10] Speaker 2: not that the guys he had, Like I think when
[28:12] Speaker 2: Trayvan Wise was really good, I think he's going to
[28:13] Speaker 2: help Florida State. But there's a couple of guys that
[28:15] Speaker 2: left that you say, why would you? Well, he was working,
[28:19] Speaker 2: like what's happening? You know, you got another start and
[28:22] Speaker 2: running back at one point in time, it's going to
[28:23] Speaker 2: be a Kentucky next year. But they may have gotten
[28:26] Speaker 2: a little more juice of a couple of positions, which
[28:28] Speaker 2: I think can help the way his offense operates. They
[28:31] Speaker 2: just have to get more rugged at the end of
[28:33] Speaker 2: the day, because I think the last two times we've
[28:35] Speaker 2: seen Georgia lineup against Texas, I think Georgia said, we
[28:39] Speaker 2: about to find out how rugged you are. And there
[28:41] Speaker 2: are probably terms that I would use in a different
[28:43] Speaker 2: manner for that, and Georgia has proven that they weren't
[28:45] Speaker 2: where they needed to be from that perspective, because I
[28:48] Speaker 2: don't think Georgia just went out there and like truly
[28:50] Speaker 2: out game plan them in a lot of ways. It's
[28:52] Speaker 2: like we're going to use blunt forced trauma. We're going
[28:54] Speaker 2: to see if you can manage it, and they didn't
[28:55] Speaker 2: manage it very well. So that part has to continue
[28:58] Speaker 2: to get different. I do think it gets improved. And
[29:01] Speaker 2: here's my biggest question with Texas right now. Who are
[29:04] Speaker 2: your hard hat guys? Who are your utility workers? Like,
[29:08] Speaker 2: who are the guy who are your glue guys in
[29:10] Speaker 2: the facility? Like, because I've been in there and heard
[29:12] Speaker 2: Sart talk about Jake Majors, Gunner, Helm John A. Baron,
[29:17] Speaker 2: Michael Taff, these sort of program guys if you will
[29:21] Speaker 2: that have Anthony Hill Junior last year, who will do
[29:24] Speaker 2: anything you ask him to do. They could have said, hey, man,
[29:26] Speaker 2: you need to do cartwheels on this play if we're
[29:28] Speaker 2: gonna get a stop, and he'd be doing twenty cart
[29:30] Speaker 2: wheels to the sideline like that guy would do whatever
[29:33] Speaker 2: you ask him to do. I don't I'm not saying
[29:35] Speaker 2: they don't have them. I'm telling you I don't know
[29:37] Speaker 2: who those guys are for Texas right now. And if
[29:39] Speaker 2: they find those guys, and they find a pretty good
[29:42] Speaker 2: number of them, they can hold it together help And
[29:45] Speaker 2: I do think Art's Manning is one of those guys,
[29:46] Speaker 2: by the way, and probably doesn't get credit for that.
[29:48] Speaker 2: I think Arch raises the level the people around him,
[29:52] Speaker 2: and people will probably never credit him for that. I
[29:54] Speaker 2: think those kids love playing with him and for him,
[29:57] Speaker 2: and they will never get credit for that because his
[29:59] Speaker 2: name is ma and people just expect him to do
[30:02] Speaker 2: these inhuman things. But what you're not going to notice
[30:04] Speaker 2: is those other dudes play their tails off because they
[30:07] Speaker 2: like him and they want to help him be better too,
[30:10] Speaker 2: So they just need more than him, like you can't
[30:12] Speaker 2: just be him. So if they find those guys, and
[30:16] Speaker 2: they get a little bit more of an edge, and
[30:17] Speaker 2: I think that's one of the main reasons that Will
[30:19] Speaker 2: was brought in, is to bring a little bit more
[30:21] Speaker 2: of an edge. They can absolutely compete for a national title,
[30:24] Speaker 2: but those would be my two biggest concerns for Texas now,
[30:27] Speaker 2: which let's parentheses this. A lot of teams would like
[30:30] Speaker 2: to have that as their only concerns right now, So
[30:33] Speaker 2: don't get mad about that. It's just that that's the reality.
[30:36] Speaker 1: Final question, this is the biggest story of the SEC offseason.
[30:39] Speaker 1: I can't believe we've gotten this far without asking. But
[30:42] Speaker 1: if you are locked in and focused on who are
[30:45] Speaker 1: those dudes, who are those glued dudes? Who are the
[30:47] Speaker 1: guys that are going to be leading your culture? LSU
[30:52] Speaker 1: has a bunch of new dudes on the coaching staff
[30:55] Speaker 1: and on the roster, and Lane has tried to manage expectations,
[31:00] Speaker 1: even despite how aggressive they were in building this roster.
[31:04] Speaker 1: Can a team in year one with this much new
[31:09] Speaker 1: Are you a believer in the connective tissue? In Look,
[31:13] Speaker 1: We're coming off of an Indiana National championship, so what
[31:15] Speaker 1: I'm saying is not a crazy question. My question is
[31:20] Speaker 1: do you believe in the baton rouge glue in this moment.
[31:26] Speaker 2: I don't know. And I told you guys before we
[31:28] Speaker 2: started this interview. Sure, remember, no one knows anything about anybody.
[31:31] Speaker 2: Nothing you know about Lane kiff De definitively we know nothing.
[31:38] Speaker 2: Right now.
[31:38] Speaker 1: I like that.
[31:39] Speaker 2: Here's what I do like about that situation. Lane can
[31:44] Speaker 2: make it easy and I'll ask you guys this question.
[31:48] Speaker 2: I asked it on my show the other day. We
[31:49] Speaker 2: were talking about this because I said the same thing
[31:51] Speaker 2: with Josh Hipel, who was the last quarterback that failed
[31:53] Speaker 2: under Lane Kiffen.
[31:57] Speaker 1: Uh well, Austin Simmons to start last year, but that
[31:59] Speaker 1: was a stuff well injuries.
[32:01] Speaker 2: Yeah, you'd have to go back to early FAU and
[32:03] Speaker 2: I even forget the kid's name, but there was a
[32:06] Speaker 2: year at FAU. His first year, the quarterback numbers were
[32:08] Speaker 2: not good. Since then, it's and then you throw in
[32:11] Speaker 2: the coordinator years, it's been pretty good almost every other year.
[32:14] Speaker 2: He's gonna make it work. Now, when you go from
[32:18] Speaker 2: eight wins to eleven or twelve wins is when the
[32:21] Speaker 2: other stuff works. Here's what I love. Blake Baker wit
[32:25] Speaker 2: Weeks trade as green. You do have some glue guys
[32:29] Speaker 2: back that one can be matchup problems, and two could
[32:34] Speaker 2: potentially take over games, and three are gonna make the
[32:37] Speaker 2: guys around them better. Like the attention that trade As
[32:39] Speaker 2: Green gets is gonna allow Harlan Berry to get more
[32:42] Speaker 2: yards on the ground. Now, do I am I a
[32:44] Speaker 2: believer in the offensive line? Not really, But I love
[32:47] Speaker 2: Jordan Seaton and I think he's one of the most
[32:49] Speaker 2: talented offensive linemen in America, maybe most talented at any
[32:52] Speaker 2: level of football. That doesn't make him one of the
[32:54] Speaker 2: best tackles in football, but when you watch that young
[32:56] Speaker 2: man move, with his size and the agility that he has,
[33:00] Speaker 2: it is impossible not to be wowed. So there are
[33:03] Speaker 2: guys there that one have made plays, there have made
[33:06] Speaker 2: plays other places coming in and you have a coaching
[33:09] Speaker 2: staff that was either there or I hate to say easy,
[33:12] Speaker 2: I probably shouldn't say that that knows how to simplify
[33:15] Speaker 2: things and put people in position to have a high
[33:18] Speaker 2: rate of success. That's probably how I should describe it.
[33:20] Speaker 2: With Lane Kiffen, and he's done it everywhere he's been
[33:22] Speaker 2: and Sam Levin is super talented. Now what I'd be
[33:24] Speaker 2: worried about is your quarterback ain't healthy right now, and
[33:28] Speaker 2: the injury that he has had worked on more than
[33:31] Speaker 2: once at times has been reoccurring. That would be one
[33:35] Speaker 2: of my bigger question marks of this year is not
[33:37] Speaker 2: as Sam Levitt healthy now can he stay healthy because
[33:39] Speaker 2: that's an injury that we've seen pop up again for
[33:41] Speaker 2: other guys. So it can absolutely work, and they should
[33:45] Speaker 2: expect it to work because the money that you're putting
[33:48] Speaker 2: up and the reputation that's on the guy that you're
[33:50] Speaker 2: bringing in, there's proof that those things, when you put
[33:52] Speaker 2: them together, have been able to find success. Now here's
[33:55] Speaker 2: the part of it that I've lane is almost perfect
[33:58] Speaker 2: for today's college football because we always viewed this as
[34:02] Speaker 2: this lase fair, nonchalant who gives a rip attitude, when
[34:06] Speaker 2: in reality, what I think it's kind of become is
[34:09] Speaker 2: we give you this, therefore we expect that you can
[34:13] Speaker 2: do it and we will help you be really good
[34:15] Speaker 2: at it, or you can leave and we will care.
[34:19] Speaker 2: And his attitude is offsetting to some people because it
[34:22] Speaker 2: looks like he doesn't care about things, or he doesn't
[34:25] Speaker 2: want things, or he doesn't know things. But there's a
[34:27] Speaker 2: little bit of that I don't give a rip that
[34:30] Speaker 2: I think kind of wakes some guys up as to oh,
[34:33] Speaker 2: they'll just put the next guy in. And by the way,
[34:35] Speaker 2: the next guys have been pretty good too, Like when
[34:37] Speaker 2: Austin Simmons came in against Georgia, he was pretty good.
[34:40] Speaker 2: You know, nobody was talking about Da Kwon Right a
[34:43] Speaker 2: tight end last year, and it's like all of a
[34:45] Speaker 2: sudden day Kwon Wright's one of their better football players.
[34:47] Speaker 2: Like they find some other guys that have also been
[34:50] Speaker 2: pretty good. So I think there's this you can do
[34:53] Speaker 2: this for us, and oh, by the way, you're making
[34:55] Speaker 2: this doing it and look with all these other guys
[34:57] Speaker 2: have done, catching, blocking, running the football, tol football. Our
[35:01] Speaker 2: way works, so get on board, will help you make
[35:04] Speaker 2: it work, or we're gonna put the next guy in.
[35:08] Speaker 3: Let's leave it there, uh, Cole Kubulic check out all
[35:12] Speaker 3: of his fine work. We appreciate your time today.
[35:14] Speaker 2: I know you got to run.
[35:15] Speaker 3: Let's let's do this again sometime soon.
[35:17] Speaker 2: Okay, cookies in the mail, yes or no, not yet, I'll.
[35:21] Speaker 1: Get you some cookies you send me, send me your
[35:23] Speaker 1: address offline. I'll look up how to uh to make
[35:25] Speaker 1: sure they don't end up their crumbly mess.
[35:28] Speaker 2: This is not to be messed with. I showed my
[35:30] Speaker 2: wife the photograph and she said, that's a follow up.
[35:32] Speaker 2: Make sure you get those.
[35:34] Speaker 1: I will secure the cookie. Your time is worth worth
[35:37] Speaker 1: butter and brown sugar and not chocolate chips cut up
[35:41] Speaker 1: chocolate bars.
[35:44] Speaker 2: I would have been happy with the chips, but you knows.
[35:47] Speaker 1: Give you they give you the river of chocolate in
[35:49] Speaker 1: the middle.
[35:50] Speaker 2: Come on, okay, well nothing but the best. That's acceptable.
[35:53] Speaker 3: Awesome Cole, thank you so much. All right, take care,
[35:57] Speaker 3: Thanks guys, all right again, Cold Cubula. Check him out
[36:01] Speaker 3: on the radio, check out the Cube show his podcast, Dan,
[36:06] Speaker 3: what did you learn from that? What did we get
[36:08] Speaker 3: out of that as two guys who are pretty far
[36:13] Speaker 3: removed from SEC country.
[36:16] Speaker 1: Yeah, I appreciated. And I had that sort of follow
[36:18] Speaker 1: up question about LSU with what he was talking about
[36:21] Speaker 1: with glue guys at Texas and how when there is
[36:25] Speaker 1: so much movement in the sport not knowing who those
[36:29] Speaker 1: people are in the way that you would have ten
[36:31] Speaker 1: years ago, twelve years ago. Like, Okay, this outside linebacker
[36:35] Speaker 1: was a rotation guy for a couple of years, is
[36:37] Speaker 1: now coming into his own and you hear a lot
[36:40] Speaker 1: about that with like NBA veterans like Al Horford, Right,
[36:44] Speaker 1: he shows the young guys what it's like to be
[36:47] Speaker 1: a pro and how to prepare and everything like that,
[36:50] Speaker 1: and what it's like playing for whatever team, and that
[36:54] Speaker 1: we're losing those guys or the continuity of those guys
[36:58] Speaker 1: more and more makes it so much more difficult forget
[37:01] Speaker 1: that they you know that everybody's transferring all the time,
[37:05] Speaker 1: but you want that bass layer of this is what
[37:08] Speaker 1: it's like to play at Michigan State, this is what
[37:11] Speaker 1: it's like to play at Texas. In his example, this
[37:14] Speaker 1: is what it's like to play at Kentucky whatever it is.
[37:17] Speaker 1: So I thought of that. I thought that sort of
[37:20] Speaker 1: point that he was in, that road that he was
[37:22] Speaker 1: going down was super interesting because a lot of the
[37:25] Speaker 1: times that's the deciding factor and you know, winning close
[37:29] Speaker 1: games right that there's a confidence on the sidelines. It's
[37:32] Speaker 1: like we have done this collectively before and we can
[37:35] Speaker 1: do it again. Whereas now you're just like, sure Texas
[37:39] Speaker 1: has you know. I think it was Rashem Biles, the
[37:41] Speaker 1: pit linebacker I think, by all accounts, has been very
[37:43] Speaker 1: very strong in spring camp for the Longhorns, but hasn't
[37:48] Speaker 1: been there with these guys, and we both root for
[37:50] Speaker 1: schools that are you going to be depending on portal
[37:53] Speaker 1: guys this year? Yep, and you hope for the best
[37:56] Speaker 1: and so hoping for the best for you know, all
[37:59] Speaker 1: the schools that he mentioned. But that is an interesting
[38:02] Speaker 1: way of looking at questions with teams. We're just like,
[38:05] Speaker 1: who are the guys that are going to set the
[38:07] Speaker 1: pace in off season workouts and fall camp and you know,
[38:10] Speaker 1: keep everybody on the same page when things don't look
[38:13] Speaker 1: great going into week seven. That kind of thing.
[38:17] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, one thing that did not come up
[38:20] Speaker 3: that I think will come up, especially around the whole
[38:24] Speaker 3: conversation of vibes very subjective. The SEC now has a
[38:29] Speaker 3: nine game conference schedule, and we joke on this show
[38:35] Speaker 3: often about the gauntlet gauntlet of the SEC schedule, which
[38:39] Speaker 3: I don't think is necessarily a joke. I mean, we
[38:42] Speaker 3: make a joke of it, but it is a gauntlet.
[38:44] Speaker 1: Well, just when you hear the words so many times,
[38:46] Speaker 1: you can't help but to enjoy it.
[38:48] Speaker 3: I would put a pin in the whole nine game
[38:52] Speaker 3: conference slate conversation as well, because first year of this
[38:58] Speaker 3: every team playing nine diference games instead of eight. Arkansas
[39:03] Speaker 3: has a brutal schedule. Oklahoma on top of their nine
[39:08] Speaker 3: game conference slate, they open well I should say they open,
[39:13] Speaker 3: but they're on the road early on in Week two
[39:16] Speaker 3: at Michigan. We've got, like I think, a conversation that
[39:21] Speaker 3: is gonna really take hold probably later this year, once
[39:24] Speaker 3: we start talking playoffs, not just about the nine game slate,
[39:28] Speaker 3: but then oh and they also played so and so
[39:32] Speaker 3: or Look like in Arkansas's case, look how hard it
[39:35] Speaker 3: was for them to try and go through that. The
[39:38] Speaker 3: conversation about SEC and GAUNTLETZ. That stuff is not going
[39:43] Speaker 3: to go away anytime soon. It didn't come up now,
[39:47] Speaker 3: being so it is mid to late April, but I
[39:51] Speaker 3: would expect if we're going to have a realistic Vibes
[39:53] Speaker 3: conversation even as soon as July when we start doing previews,
[39:58] Speaker 3: it's going to be hard to ignore the fact that
[40:00] Speaker 3: the schedules have changed.
[40:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, and look, we have other conferences, other major conferences
[40:04] Speaker 1: that play nine conference games. We have each of these
[40:09] Speaker 1: conferences being deeper than they ever were before, right with
[40:13] Speaker 1: the Big Twelve adding what they have both in the
[40:16] Speaker 1: West Coast schools and the expansion from a few years ago.
[40:19] Speaker 1: Now the ACC not just adding you know, quality SMU
[40:23] Speaker 1: team which has been right there or been in the
[40:24] Speaker 1: a SEC Championship early on. But even if Callen Stanford
[40:27] Speaker 1: aren't great, you're still adding that new wrinkle of traveling
[40:30] Speaker 1: cross country if you're one of those teams on the
[40:32] Speaker 1: Eastern seaboard, and adding that ninth game does more to
[40:37] Speaker 1: prevent you know, a team like Miszoo or Texas A
[40:41] Speaker 1: and M last season where it works out where you're
[40:44] Speaker 1: just getting the bottom of the conference by and large
[40:47] Speaker 1: until you know the final week or whatever. So it's
[40:51] Speaker 1: a gauntlet, but it in all seriousness, it's it's a
[40:54] Speaker 1: gauntlet in the right year. But it also does a
[40:57] Speaker 1: good amount to prevent terribly uneven schedules as the conferences
[41:04] Speaker 1: are now so huge. So hopefully it does enough in
[41:08] Speaker 1: terms of giving us more data that we have a
[41:12] Speaker 1: list of standings that feels more accurate.
[41:14] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I also think again, just relative to vibes,
[41:19] Speaker 3: the conversation will be a lot about quarterback this time
[41:24] Speaker 3: of year, and there is a conference wide quarterback shuffle
[41:26] Speaker 3: that I'm not going to go into with any great detail. Now,
[41:29] Speaker 3: this is not a preview that's going to be a
[41:32] Speaker 3: talking point. Clearly, the portal spend is already a talking point,
[41:37] Speaker 3: if only at LSU. What interests me actually is that
[41:40] Speaker 3: we've got a lot of turnover at defensive coordinator. By
[41:46] Speaker 3: my count, about nine of sixteen teams that have some
[41:49] Speaker 3: kind of meaningful defensive shift. You've got big changes at
[41:53] Speaker 3: places like Tennessee.
[41:54] Speaker 2: Right.
[41:55] Speaker 3: Tennessee hired Jim Knowles, Texas brought back Will mush champ
[41:59] Speaker 3: oh mishired mar Arcus Woodson, Arkansas with Ron Roberts, Kentucky
[42:04] Speaker 3: with Jay Bateman, which is a pretty big move, Florida
[42:07] Speaker 3: with Brad White from Kentucky, Mississippi State bringing back Zach Barnett. Yeah,
[42:13] Speaker 3: that's in addition to some other internal promotions. The defensive
[42:17] Speaker 3: coordinator turnover is the kind of thing that I think
[42:20] Speaker 3: is going to shape September in a way that I'm
[42:23] Speaker 3: not sure how many Antennas are talking about that, at
[42:26] Speaker 3: least in the types of things that I've been reading about.
[42:28] Speaker 3: The SEC A lot has talked about quarterback and returning
[42:32] Speaker 3: production and schedules and portals, But truly, the turnover on
[42:36] Speaker 3: that side of the ball, on the coaching side, is
[42:39] Speaker 3: going to be really interesting to follow as we get
[42:41] Speaker 3: a little bit closer.
[42:42] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's interesting. There are enough known entities at quarterback
[42:47] Speaker 1: in the conference on a high level, right when you
[42:50] Speaker 1: look like Trinidad Chambliss and Leonora Sellers, Gunner Stock and
[42:52] Speaker 1: arch Manning are the best of arch Manning that you're like, Okay,
[42:57] Speaker 1: I have a good concept of what their offense could
[42:59] Speaker 1: be if everything kind of works out and they're able
[43:02] Speaker 1: to weather whatever injuries they oh, yeah, have to weather.
[43:05] Speaker 1: The point about the defensive coordinators paired with just portaling
[43:08] Speaker 1: in general, paired with however many new coaches we have
[43:13] Speaker 1: now in John Sumral and Ryan Silverfield and Alex Golesh
[43:16] Speaker 1: and Lanekiffin to LSU and Will Stein at Kentucky. I
[43:22] Speaker 1: just think there are going to be teams, whether it's
[43:26] Speaker 1: new coaches or new coordinators and new quarterbacks whatever. I
[43:30] Speaker 1: think this could be a particularly pronounced year in which
[43:32] Speaker 1: teams look like something on September twenty third and look
[43:37] Speaker 1: completely different on November.
[43:39] Speaker 3: Nine thousand percent. That's exactly what I was speaking to.
[43:42] Speaker 1: Yes, that there is there is something to be said about, like, Okay,
[43:47] Speaker 1: I know this is what they look like now after
[43:50] Speaker 1: the non conference portion of their schedule. I know what
[43:52] Speaker 1: this team, you know, and I haven't even mentioned the
[43:55] Speaker 1: you know, the new starting quarterbacks that are going to
[43:56] Speaker 1: be in this conference that you can't trust your septemberized
[44:01] Speaker 1: this year and the way that maybe especially with fewer
[44:04] Speaker 1: conference games you could in previous seasons. And I know,
[44:07] Speaker 1: obviously you know, we like to hammer the point where,
[44:10] Speaker 1: like you know, between weeks one and weeks two, that's
[44:12] Speaker 1: where you know, so much change happened, change happens. I
[44:16] Speaker 1: think we have to look at September as sort of
[44:18] Speaker 1: a training wheel month for so much of this conference
[44:20] Speaker 1: right now that you just you can't the conclusions that
[44:25] Speaker 1: you jump to can't be too severe easy to say,
[44:29] Speaker 1: this is college football. All of us are prone to
[44:33] Speaker 1: making extremely severe conclusion jumping because you know, the data
[44:38] Speaker 1: points are pretty limited still. But yeah, I expect like
[44:43] Speaker 1: a lot of October problem solving or lack thereof, but
[44:47] Speaker 1: a lot of dramatic shifts in this conference in October.
[44:52] Speaker 3: I mean, you've got Gunner stocked in at Georgia mm hmm,
[44:56] Speaker 3: arch Manning at Texas, Marcel Read at Texas saying y,
[45:00] Speaker 3: John Mattier at Oklahoma, Lenora's Sellers at South Carolina, Camaro
[45:05] Speaker 3: Taylor and Mississippi State. I think that situation is pretty settled.
[45:09] Speaker 1: New full time starters, new full time starters.
[45:12] Speaker 3: Yeah, and you will have a new quarterback chambles. Yeah,
[45:16] Speaker 3: those are the ones that I've got jotted down as
[45:18] Speaker 3: I think being you know, fairly settled as to who
[45:22] Speaker 3: we know is going to be out there, and at
[45:24] Speaker 3: least we've seen them with their teams. But there is
[45:27] Speaker 3: like a pretty big pack of others around college football,
[45:32] Speaker 3: and certainly within the SEC, like nine other SEC teams
[45:35] Speaker 3: that I'm not going to say it's unsettled as to
[45:39] Speaker 3: who the starter is going to be, but these are
[45:41] Speaker 3: situations where we haven't necessarily seen this guy at this place,
[45:44] Speaker 3: and that makes it interesting if nothing more.
[45:46] Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, we have a concept for like
[45:49] Speaker 1: what the best of Sam Levitt is. But as Cole mentioned,
[45:53] Speaker 1: like the injury ton up in the air with the
[45:55] Speaker 1: foot injury, foot.
[45:56] Speaker 3: Injury, new supporting cast, new new place, like you just
[46:02] Speaker 3: can't take it to the bank that these are all
[46:04] Speaker 3: gonna work.
[46:04] Speaker 1: Yes, this is to me a very long winded way
[46:10] Speaker 1: of saying we're gonna see some snakes in the SEC
[46:13] Speaker 1: toilet this season. There's me, there's gonna be a week
[46:16] Speaker 1: where like, oh, Kentucky figured it out. Oh we haven't
[46:19] Speaker 1: even mentioned a ten win Vanderbilt team from last year,
[46:21] Speaker 1: who's obviously starting over in a number of key places,
[46:24] Speaker 1: but like one games for in a number of different ways,
[46:28] Speaker 1: and I just there's going to be like a god.
[46:32] Speaker 1: I always it was a twenty eleven the week that
[46:36] Speaker 1: Oregon lost to USC, I want to say, Oklahoma State
[46:40] Speaker 1: lost to Iowa State. There was like that one weird week.
[46:44] Speaker 1: There's going to be a there's almost assuredly going to
[46:47] Speaker 1: be a week where we're like, what is happening in
[46:49] Speaker 1: the SEC that Kentucky just beat blank? And Mississippi State
[46:54] Speaker 1: just beat blank and Florida just beat blank and it
[46:57] Speaker 1: completely threw off you know the track we thought we
[47:00] Speaker 1: were on. Yeah, can wait?
[47:04] Speaker 3: Yeah? I mean the combination of schedules with quarterback turnover
[47:12] Speaker 3: with defensive coordinator turnover. I think it makes for an
[47:17] Speaker 3: absolutely fascinating conference. That is never not the case with
[47:20] Speaker 3: the SEC, but in particular, I think this year is
[47:25] Speaker 3: going to be really interesting to chart as we move forward.
[47:29] Speaker 3: I did jot down. I know this isn't a preview place,
[47:32] Speaker 3: but if you just want to tie vibe check. I
[47:35] Speaker 3: would love it on the SEC. I have not put
[47:38] Speaker 3: together all of the preview content yet. That won't happen
[47:40] Speaker 3: for at least another month month and a half or so.
[47:43] Speaker 3: But right now, the way that I have labeled my
[47:47] Speaker 3: teams in the SEC, my viable playoff teams right now
[47:53] Speaker 3: is a pretty big list because I haven't paid it
[47:55] Speaker 3: down yet.
[47:56] Speaker 1: So this is a preview to the preview preva to
[47:58] Speaker 1: the preview.
[47:59] Speaker 3: Vibe check my playoff viable teams in the SEC. And
[48:02] Speaker 3: this is part of why I think it's so interesting. Yeah, Georgia,
[48:06] Speaker 3: Old Miss Texas A and m LSU, Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma.
[48:11] Speaker 2: What is that?
[48:11] Speaker 3: Seven teams?
[48:12] Speaker 1: Seven teams out of eights like half the conference that
[48:15] Speaker 1: I think is playoff viable. Okay.
[48:18] Speaker 3: And then beyond that, if I go down or rung,
[48:20] Speaker 3: I've got Tennessee, Missoo and South Carolina. It's some tier
[48:27] Speaker 3: whatever that is.
[48:27] Speaker 1: You have a big Vanderbilt falloff in terms of viability. Okay.
[48:30] Speaker 3: Yeah, and then underneath that, like I guess my Tier three.
[48:34] Speaker 3: I'm not even labeling these yet, right Okay, I don't
[48:37] Speaker 3: even know what under playoff viable consists of at this point,
[48:40] Speaker 3: but just the way that I kind of have been
[48:43] Speaker 3: power rating them in the early going. Here underneath that class,
[48:47] Speaker 3: I've got Auburn, Vandy, and Florida. Florida is probably too low,
[48:52] Speaker 3: but right now, just where I'm at, okay vibes teams
[48:56] Speaker 3: that I think will or could make a bowl, Mississippi
[48:59] Speaker 3: State and Kentucky, and then at the bottom, I've got Arkansas.
[49:02] Speaker 3: I have no idea what to make Arkansas Okay right now,
[49:05] Speaker 3: that's just how I would stack them up. This is
[49:08] Speaker 3: going to change like seven times before we do previews,
[49:10] Speaker 3: but I'm having a real hard time sort of distinguishing
[49:14] Speaker 3: at the very top because I can make a case
[49:15] Speaker 3: for all of those teams, which I think is what
[49:17] Speaker 3: makes the conference so interesting.
[49:19] Speaker 1: The important thing that we will leave you with is
[49:23] Speaker 1: that we must recognize that the SEC has fully shifted
[49:27] Speaker 1: its momentum to men's college tennis and baseball and baseball. Well,
[49:32] Speaker 1: baseball has been there for a while. I know college
[49:33] Speaker 1: tennis has been there. You know, there's been a lot
[49:35] Speaker 1: of strong SEC teams, I think highlighted by Georgia. But
[49:39] Speaker 1: what was the tennis thing that you told me? Seven
[49:41] Speaker 1: of the top thirteen teams in the nation. Five of
[49:44] Speaker 1: the top ten and twelve of the top thirty come
[49:48] Speaker 1: from the SEC. That's not nothing. If we just went
[49:52] Speaker 1: on the air and by the way, the Tennis National Championships,
[49:56] Speaker 1: the NCAA tournament, the end of it at least is
[49:59] Speaker 1: at the Georgia Tennis Facility. Oh okay, yeah, it's a
[50:03] Speaker 1: cool thing. If we came on there, if we hit
[50:05] Speaker 1: record and without any kind of introduction, Uh huh, just
[50:13] Speaker 1: talk tennis like college tennis. Just did a full hour
[50:21] Speaker 1: on SEC tennis with no warning. Yeah, what kind of
[50:26] Speaker 1: feedback will we get to.
[50:27] Speaker 3: That we're not there. We're not softening the ground like
[50:31] Speaker 3: we're not We're not warning anybody, right, it's a full
[50:36] Speaker 3: on bait and switch. So we would have the ability
[50:40] Speaker 3: to prepare to talk about SEC ten, but nobody else would.
[50:44] Speaker 2: Uh.
[50:46] Speaker 1: I think there would be confusion, and then we would
[50:50] Speaker 1: have three new fans for life die hards.
[50:55] Speaker 3: Are downloads or I should say the people who downloaded
[50:59] Speaker 3: and completed episode would consist of sixteen SEC tennis coaches
[51:04] Speaker 3: and that would be it.
[51:05] Speaker 1: That's exactly right, and you and you right, I uh yeah,
[51:09] Speaker 1: that would be that would be difficult. But a lot
[51:11] Speaker 1: of respect to the dominance in the SEC on the
[51:13] Speaker 1: on the tennis courts, and I expect more dominance come
[51:17] Speaker 1: late May.
[51:19] Speaker 3: Why don't we leave it there, folks, Thank you again
[51:21] Speaker 3: to our guest of honor, Cole Kublick. Always a pleasure
[51:24] Speaker 3: to have him on. We will definitely need to do
[51:26] Speaker 3: it again at some point before the season gets rolling.
[51:29] Speaker 3: It'd be great to get his feedback. Thus far, we
[51:31] Speaker 3: have now done two vibe check episodes we did, John Kurtz,
[51:36] Speaker 3: go back and listen to the episode we did where
[51:38] Speaker 3: we talked about the Big twelve. That was just John
[51:40] Speaker 3: and I, John and me? What is the proper? What
[51:44] Speaker 3: am what am I supposed to say?
[51:45] Speaker 2: There?
[51:45] Speaker 1: Do the sentence one more time.
[51:47] Speaker 3: The SEC or the Big twelve vibe check that we
[51:50] Speaker 3: did was John Kurtz and I or John Kurtz and me.
[51:55] Speaker 2: Me.
[51:56] Speaker 3: Yeah, it was just John Kurtz and me.
[52:00] Speaker 1: So you the object of that sentence is the vibe
[52:03] Speaker 1: check episode featured John Kurtz and me.
[52:08] Speaker 3: Okay, it was John and me on that one, and
[52:11] Speaker 3: this one obviously was the three of us.
[52:13] Speaker 1: Nope, it was John and I on that one.
[52:15] Speaker 2: Screwed up already?
[52:16] Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, it was the two of us. Yeah,
[52:21] Speaker 1: you're the object, so it's me. The subject was the episode.
[52:26] Speaker 3: Pin in the Ass, all right. It was the two
[52:28] Speaker 3: of us on that episode. It was the three of
[52:30] Speaker 3: us on this one. We've got two big power conferences
[52:32] Speaker 3: yet to go. We will work those in, we'll weave
[52:35] Speaker 3: them into the off season content. However, we can here
[52:38] Speaker 3: over the next days and weeks that are ahead before
