[0:02] Speaker 1: Welcome to the solid verbal hull ah for me. I'm
[0:06] Speaker 1: a man, I'm forty. I've heard so many players say, well,
[0:09] Speaker 1: I want to be happy. You want to be happy
[0:11] Speaker 1: for dake Edo State? Is that whoo whoom? And Dan
[0:16] Speaker 1: and tie Dan Rubertstein.
[0:19] Speaker 2: It's playoff League, baby, Yes, sir, the place, sir, it
[0:22] Speaker 2: is are upon us, my friend, welcome back to the show.
[0:25] Speaker 1: How you doing today? I'm good. I'm very cold. It
[0:28] Speaker 1: is very frigid here in the Midwest, and that's okay.
[0:32] Speaker 1: I signed up for it. I knew that this was
[0:33] Speaker 1: going to be a reality. But every winter strikes, and
[0:37] Speaker 1: no matter if it's mild, no matter if it's violent,
[0:39] Speaker 1: it is always a little bit depressing when the world
[0:43] Speaker 1: just comes to a standstill, when everything just sort of
[0:47] Speaker 1: freezes over and everything is sort of paralyzed, and I
[0:52] Speaker 1: have to go outside for eighteen minutes and walk a
[0:56] Speaker 1: kid to school. That's the tough I'm the real victim here,
[0:58] Speaker 1: ty Now. Other than that, I'm okay. I'm very excited
[1:01] Speaker 1: that it's playoff week. How you doing. I'm good.
[1:03] Speaker 2: You know, we got a surprise eight inch snowfall the
[1:07] Speaker 2: other night, and though it was miserable, for us humans.
[1:11] Speaker 2: My two snow dogs loved it, loved it.
[1:14] Speaker 1: Dan. They could not get enough of it.
[1:16] Speaker 2: I had to lure them in with more treats than usual,
[1:21] Speaker 2: and they are now whimpering by the door twenty four
[1:24] Speaker 2: to seven, wanting to go back out and play.
[1:26] Speaker 1: And wanting to get back out there and frolic.
[1:27] Speaker 2: Okay, so it's not great for the humans, but it's
[1:30] Speaker 2: great for the snow dogs. Welcome back, one and all,
[1:33] Speaker 2: wherever you may be. Hopefully you are warm and cozy
[1:37] Speaker 2: and ready to imbibe a full hour or so of
[1:40] Speaker 2: college football. We've got the four playoff games that Dan
[1:43] Speaker 2: and I are going to preview.
[1:44] Speaker 1: We've also got some news.
[1:46] Speaker 2: We've also got some news about our big postseason game
[1:49] Speaker 2: out at Verbalis Time. I will talk through that a
[1:52] Speaker 2: little bit later on in the episode. If you're new here,
[1:55] Speaker 2: if you like what you hear, you like what you see,

[2:01] Speaker 2: of our episodes. We're going to be coming your way
[2:03] Speaker 2: three times a week all throughout the remainder.
[2:05] Speaker 1: Of this season.
[2:07] Speaker 2: Ran an interview on Sunday with our friend matt Ford Tuna.
[2:10] Speaker 2: We're trying to run some of these longer formed discussions
[2:12] Speaker 2: on Sundays, although because we got playoffs this week.
[2:15] Speaker 1: We'll probably doing the normal recap thing. More to come
[2:17] Speaker 1: on that front.
[2:19] Speaker 2: The best way to stay in touch with what we're doing,
[2:22] Speaker 2: hit follow, hit subscribe if you have to do so.
[2:23] Speaker 2: You can also tune in to all of our social feeds,
[2:27] Speaker 2: whichever one is for you. We've got them all at
[2:30] Speaker 2: this point.
[2:31] Speaker 1: Dan Rubinstein, Yes, by the way, I did notice, just
[2:34] Speaker 1: to tie some of what there's tie, tie this a
[2:37] Speaker 1: little bit together. I don't think unlike last season, I
[2:40] Speaker 1: don't think we have a frigid opening round playoffs that
[2:43] Speaker 1: you do not last year we had both Penn State
[2:46] Speaker 1: and Notre Dame hosting very cold, like twenties thirties. I
[2:49] Speaker 1: think Penn State might have dipped into the like sixteen seventeen.
[2:52] Speaker 2: I know Range, I know a handful of people that
[2:55] Speaker 2: were at that game, and they were all miserable.
[2:58] Speaker 1: That was a horrible sit for a.
[3:01] Speaker 2: Great stadium, a great event, very cool, a very big
[3:05] Speaker 2: win for the Penn State program.
[3:07] Speaker 1: A horrible experience for everybody else. Yes, Eugene, maybe like forties,
[3:13] Speaker 1: that's fine. I would love I would bask in forties.
[3:15] Speaker 1: Forties is tropical with what I'm dealing with right now.
[3:18] Speaker 1: But otherwise, right Oxford, Mississippi and College Station, Texas both
[3:26] Speaker 1: looking like nice days. Norman, Oklahoma should be nice out.
[3:29] Speaker 1: Everything looks like sixty seventies somewhere in there, so decent
[3:33] Speaker 1: enough football weather, so we're not going to get that
[3:35] Speaker 1: litteral element to it. But yeah, we don't have frigid tempts,
[3:39] Speaker 1: which is a win for everybody standing around, and I
[3:43] Speaker 1: guess a loss for those of us at home who
[3:45] Speaker 1: enjoy like the texture of it all. Dan, should we
[3:48] Speaker 1: jump into some of the news of the day. I
[3:50] Speaker 1: would love to. I'm not going to do the thing
[3:58] Speaker 1: where I yell here, I'm sure and serve my voice.
[4:01] Speaker 1: Is going to be a long week. You know what
[4:03] Speaker 1: this is.
[4:03] Speaker 2: This is load management tie, That's exactly what this is.
[4:06] Speaker 2: I'm doing a little Joelle and beat over here. Twenty
[4:09] Speaker 2: seventeen tie never would have stood for that, but here
[4:11] Speaker 2: we are. We have a Heisman Trophy winner. His name
[4:14] Speaker 2: is Fernando Mendoza of Indiana. He beat out Diego Pavia,
[4:20] Speaker 2: Jeremiah Love, and Julian Saying, coming in fifth place, though
[4:24] Speaker 2: he wasn't there. Jacob Rodriguez shout out to him actually
[4:27] Speaker 2: got more first place votes as the fifth place finisher
[4:30] Speaker 2: than Julian Sayan did as the fourth place finisher.
[4:33] Speaker 1: Okay, not a huge surprise, right.
[4:35] Speaker 2: Fornana Mendoza was sort of the name that I think
[4:37] Speaker 2: most had expected would get this award. It really was
[4:41] Speaker 2: a question of is it going to be close? Is
[4:44] Speaker 2: it going to be a blowout? It kind of wasn't either,
[4:47] Speaker 2: but there was a pretty healthy margin between Fernanda Mendoza,
[4:51] Speaker 2: who had twenty three hundred total points after the vote,
[4:53] Speaker 2: and Diego Pavia, who had fourteen hundred and thirty five.
[4:58] Speaker 2: I guess the big story with this is not so
[5:00] Speaker 2: much Fernando Mendoza winning the Heisman as it was Diego
[5:02] Speaker 2: Pavia losing the Heisman and being a little bit weird afterwards. Yeah,
[5:07] Speaker 2: got some headlines by posting a picture or a video
[5:11] Speaker 2: or somehow it came out of him holding an f
[5:13] Speaker 2: Indiana sign shooting at the bird. He also had an
[5:17] Speaker 2: Instagram story saying f all the voters with him and
[5:20] Speaker 2: his boys saw that. He then came back after the
[5:23] Speaker 2: fact and issued an apology stated that Fernanda Mendoz is
[5:26] Speaker 2: an elite competitor gave compliments to the others. So honestly,
[5:30] Speaker 2: the thing that I noticed was it had nothing to
[5:32] Speaker 2: do with any of these Instagram stories or whatever derogatory
[5:36] Speaker 2: signs he was holding. Did you see the picture of
[5:39] Speaker 2: him next to the other competitors.
[5:42] Speaker 1: That he's more diminutive.
[5:44] Speaker 2: He looked tiny by comparison. This is not to take
[5:47] Speaker 2: away we love Diego Pavia ty. We celebrate our short
[5:51] Speaker 2: kings here, do we not.
[5:53] Speaker 1: We absolutely do. The Rogers brothers and that would be
[5:57] Speaker 1: Jaquiz and James, not Jordan and Aaron are absolutely in
[6:01] Speaker 1: the solid verbal ring of honor.
[6:03] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm just I noticed that. If you've ever seen
[6:07] Speaker 2: that old picture of like I think it was the
[6:10] Speaker 2: Rock with Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal, the three of
[6:14] Speaker 2: them standing in a row, A.
[6:15] Speaker 1: Rocket's just diminutive.
[6:17] Speaker 2: Yeah, kind of got vibes of that looking at Diego Pavia,
[6:20] Speaker 2: who again deserved to be there, had a hell of
[6:22] Speaker 2: a campaign with Vanderbilt both this year, this year and
[6:25] Speaker 2: last and certainly a couple of years before that before
[6:29] Speaker 2: he came over to Dandy.
[6:30] Speaker 1: But that was the real eye opener to me, Like,
[6:32] Speaker 1: holy cal Well, I guess I mean speaking of Ring
[6:35] Speaker 1: of Honor, maybe Notre Dame after seeing such a sore loser,
[6:38] Speaker 1: will induct him into theirs, right, the Notre Dame Ring
[6:42] Speaker 1: of Honor, the like some sort of exemption for a
[6:44] Speaker 1: non Irish player, Diego Pavia for excellence in the field
[6:47] Speaker 1: of being a sore loser. No stop, I think that
[6:51] Speaker 1: tracks first of all, And may I say, Diego, I
[6:55] Speaker 1: don't have a Heisman vote, and probably for good reason.
[6:57] Speaker 1: I'm like Toby Gerhardt all day way back when I
[7:00] Speaker 1: I still am pissed about him, and you know, basically
[7:02] Speaker 1: any white Stanford running back. I guess with Christian McCaffrey too.
[7:06] Speaker 1: But Diego Pavia, to me, the combination of his dual
[7:10] Speaker 1: threat ability in that conference, what he accomplished, and just
[7:15] Speaker 1: I like to award a coolness factor, like I take
[7:17] Speaker 1: that in, like, how cool is it to watch this player?
[7:20] Speaker 1: Fernando Mendoza was excellent. And we all know that there's
[7:22] Speaker 1: nothing you can say about an Indiana football player that
[7:25] Speaker 1: will satisfy Indiana fans at this point, right, So, like
[7:28] Speaker 1: you get to that level, not even possible, right, And
[7:32] Speaker 1: they'll never be They'll never have a scandal, which is cool.
[7:36] Speaker 1: Fernando Mendoza was excellent and every bit earned the Heisman.
[7:40] Speaker 1: My vote would have been Diego Pavia because I just
[7:43] Speaker 1: enjoyed watching him more with the stats, with his accomplishment
[7:47] Speaker 1: that that was put up. I think what he has
[7:50] Speaker 1: done has more has provided me with more excellent entertainment
[7:56] Speaker 1: this year. And it's okay if you disagree, but that's
[7:58] Speaker 1: where I would have gone with my with my vote.
[8:01] Speaker 1: But yeah, I understand all perspectives here, so I probably
[8:04] Speaker 1: would have voted for Pavia too.
[8:06] Speaker 2: Yeah, personally, and again not to take anything away from
[8:09] Speaker 2: the other guys, they're all clearly deserving of being in
[8:13] Speaker 2: this conversation, But the way that Pavia kind of put
[8:17] Speaker 2: the Vanderbilt offense on his back, I think he showed
[8:21] Speaker 2: real improvement this year, which is something that sort of
[8:24] Speaker 2: gets lost in the wash of the national conversation around
[8:27] Speaker 2: Pavi and how entertaining he is. But if you look
[8:29] Speaker 2: a lot at his numb at a lot of his numbers,
[8:31] Speaker 2: he's improved. He got a lot better as a passer.
[8:34] Speaker 2: This is a better Vandy team than it was a
[8:35] Speaker 2: year ago. That's why, Yeah, the precipice of making the
[8:38] Speaker 2: college football Playoff.
[8:39] Speaker 1: They didn't, but kudos to him.
[8:42] Speaker 2: Kudos to Fernana Mendoz is a very big deal for
[8:44] Speaker 2: him after he transfers over from cal It's a very
[8:47] Speaker 2: big deal for the Indiana football program.
[8:49] Speaker 1: Look, they're ring.
[8:50] Speaker 2: This is only year two two under Kurt Signetti, and
[8:55] Speaker 2: they've already got a Heisman Trophy winner. They're going to
[8:57] Speaker 2: be the number one seed in the upcoming College FOOTBA Playoff.
[9:00] Speaker 2: It's a really, really good time to be a Hoosier fan.
[9:04] Speaker 2: And honestly, I just going through some of this playoff
[9:08] Speaker 2: stuff and trying to game plan out how I feel
[9:11] Speaker 2: the bracket's gonna work. I still have to twist myself
[9:14] Speaker 2: into a bit of a mental pretzel to remember that
[9:17] Speaker 2: Indiana is this good and that it is not your
[9:20] Speaker 2: father's Indiana. This is a very very good Indiana team
[9:23] Speaker 2: that's got a lot of balance and a bunch of
[9:25] Speaker 2: different ways to beat you, both on offense defense, and
[9:28] Speaker 2: Mendoza that has done this season is certainly a testament
[9:31] Speaker 2: to that. So good job to him, Good job to
[9:34] Speaker 2: all of the competitors here that made it to New York.
[9:37] Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Fernanda Mendoza, your twenty twenty five Heisman Trophy winner.
[9:41] Speaker 1: Is he the only or one of the only Heisman
[9:46] Speaker 1: winners or finalists who have like a robust linked in account.
[9:50] Speaker 1: Have you seen that from him? That he's has internships
[9:53] Speaker 1: and he's talked about being proficient in Excel. I think
[9:56] Speaker 1: it was like a real estate investment firm because he
[9:59] Speaker 1: was initially I want to see a Yale commit, right, Okay,
[10:02] Speaker 1: and then he went to CAL. Yeah, I think that's true.
[10:05] Speaker 1: Or he was either heavily recruited by Yale then went
[10:06] Speaker 1: to Cal. But I think he was a Yale commit,
[10:08] Speaker 1: went to Cal and was involved in like VC stuff
[10:12] Speaker 1: there as an intern, Like he was putting in like
[10:13] Speaker 1: a bunch. I think he got his degree at Cal
[10:16] Speaker 1: from like the business school at CAL. I could be
[10:18] Speaker 1: making up all of this. This is probably like eighty
[10:20] Speaker 1: three percent true and like super impressive dude, obviously both
[10:24] Speaker 1: on and off the field. But I want to say, I'm,
[10:28] Speaker 1: first of all, I'm raising my hand right now, not
[10:31] Speaker 1: proficient in Excel, and I've been out of school for
[10:34] Speaker 1: quite some time. I'm alright, I can, I can, so
[10:37] Speaker 1: you'd say proficient. Oh, I'm definitely proficient.
[10:40] Speaker 2: I'm a greade above proficient, but I'm probably not at
[10:42] Speaker 2: Mendoze levels with it.
[10:44] Speaker 1: But you didn't. You didn't exaggerate anything on your LinkedIn profile,
[10:47] Speaker 1: and like you didn't say like conversational in like Portuguese
[10:51] Speaker 1: or something. No, okay, just making sure so yes, all
[10:55] Speaker 1: worthy finalists and near finalists. Obviously, Jacob Rodriguez had an
[10:59] Speaker 1: enormous season. But by the way, just more from the weekend.
[11:03] Speaker 1: I know we've got a bunch to get to with
[11:04] Speaker 1: both the games and news and opinions and whatever. Navy
[11:10] Speaker 1: eked by Army in a really fun end of that
[11:12] Speaker 1: game with the fumble and the fourth and one conversion
[11:15] Speaker 1: at the end.
[11:16] Speaker 2: A great game, that was real fun, fun game. Mama
[11:20] Speaker 2: h texted me, She's like, what are you doing? And
[11:22] Speaker 2: I didn't have it all at the time. I was
[11:23] Speaker 2: sort of working on some stuff here around the house
[11:27] Speaker 2: and didn't have a chance to like watch it the
[11:28] Speaker 2: full way through. But she's like, you got get in
[11:30] Speaker 2: front of the TV. You're supposed to be a college
[11:32] Speaker 2: football guy. Enjoyed thoroughly that fourth quarter. A really really
[11:37] Speaker 2: great game. As you said, Navy wins. It's seventeen to sixteen.
[11:40] Speaker 2: As we said, you got to throw out.
[11:41] Speaker 1: The records in the Army Navy.
[11:42] Speaker 2: Gotta throw the record. Take the points, just take the
[11:45] Speaker 2: under points.
[11:47] Speaker 1: Yeah. Also saw that Washington wins the final Bucked Up
[11:52] Speaker 1: LA Bowl presented by Gronk Gronk whatever they're getting rid
[11:56] Speaker 1: of it. Yeah, I think this was the final one.
[11:59] Speaker 1: Maybe it'll happen because before it was what the Jimmy
[12:01] Speaker 1: Kimmel l a bowl, right, and now it's the Bucked Up,
[12:04] Speaker 1: which we discovered makes various protein shakes, labl Washington throttled boise,
[12:10] Speaker 1: slowish competitive start, back and forth a little bit, but Washington,
[12:14] Speaker 1: both sides of the ball, was just too much. And
[12:18] Speaker 1: we'll see what Jedfish's future is because we're at his
[12:21] Speaker 1: magical time of like that two three year window where
[12:24] Speaker 1: he decided Jedfish is on tour. He's not the only
[12:26] Speaker 1: fish on tour, tie, he is not the only fit
[12:31] Speaker 1: and does does the tour stop in at ann Arbor TVD, TVD.
[12:35] Speaker 1: They're still serting out the dates. But Jedfish, I mean, look,
[12:39] Speaker 1: the Washington program was a mess after Kalin de Boor
[12:42] Speaker 1: left and all the starter's gone and everything, and he's
[12:43] Speaker 1: done a nice job recruiting and building this back into
[12:46] Speaker 1: like a pretty decent team. They had a really nice
[12:49] Speaker 1: offense for stretches. The defense is pretty good this year
[12:52] Speaker 1: as well. But man, that dude can't stay put. That
[12:55] Speaker 1: dude just gets restless. He always needs a new hobby,
[12:58] Speaker 1: he needs a new fix. And we'll see, we'll see
[13:00] Speaker 1: if that moves on to Ann Arbor.
[13:02] Speaker 2: Well, you mentioned the Michigan coaching search, and I did
[13:06] Speaker 2: refresh the old hot board a little bit before we
[13:10] Speaker 2: hit oh yeah, to see where things stood. And this
[13:13] Speaker 2: is from our friend Pete Nacos over at on three
[13:16] Speaker 2: Alabama and Kaylin de Borr are having ongoing talks about
[13:19] Speaker 2: an extension, but nothing has been agreed upon or signed.
[13:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, speaking with sources.
[13:25] Speaker 2: The other five names that continue to come up the
[13:27] Speaker 2: most are Louisville's Jeff Brahm, Arizona State's Kenny Dillingham, Okay
[13:33] Speaker 2: missus Eli Drinkwitz, Washington's Jedfish and LA Chargers defensive coordinator
[13:40] Speaker 2: Jesse Minter.
[13:41] Speaker 1: Yep, some interesting names.
[13:43] Speaker 2: We have been hearing most of those names throughout this
[13:46] Speaker 2: coaching carousel cycle. Of course, that was all before the
[13:49] Speaker 2: Michigan job came open.
[13:51] Speaker 1: Minter as a show cause, by the way, I think
[13:53] Speaker 1: until the spring, I want to say, and that's around
[13:56] Speaker 1: recruiting violations. I don't believe it's tied to the the
[14:00] Speaker 1: cheating scandal right the Connor Stallion's scouting stuff. But you
[14:05] Speaker 1: can fact check me on that. That's fine, But I
[14:06] Speaker 1: want to say that's what it's regarding. I don't think
[14:09] Speaker 1: if he's truly the guy, Michigan will figure out a
[14:11] Speaker 1: way to figure it out. But obviously the Chargers of
[14:14] Speaker 1: the Middle, they're good, right, they're good this season? Yeah,
[14:16] Speaker 1: I think so. I think they're pretty decent. They swept
[14:18] Speaker 1: the Chiefs, but the Chiefs aren't good. I don't know.
[14:20] Speaker 1: I don't really follow the NFL until the playoffs. Other
[14:23] Speaker 1: names are interesting. You know, Eli Drinkwitz reportedly turned down
[14:28] Speaker 1: interest in the Penn State job, and I want to
[14:31] Speaker 1: say extended or is in talks to extend at MISSOO.
[14:34] Speaker 1: The Kailen de Bor statement was interesting, like he said
[14:37] Speaker 1: I haven't had talks but didn't mention representation and like
[14:40] Speaker 1: it's sort of at this time, we haven't signed an extension,
[14:43] Speaker 1: so you know, I think there's careful wording there. But
[14:48] Speaker 1: also I don't think Kaylen de Bor after replacing Nick
[14:53] Speaker 1: Saban wants to get in a situation at Michigan with
[14:56] Speaker 1: that much uncertainty behind the scenes and with leadership, and
[14:59] Speaker 1: I don't you know, I think jet Fish would like
[15:02] Speaker 1: like in the way you would pay to host a
[15:03] Speaker 1: show on cable access. I think he would pay two
[15:05] Speaker 1: hundred and fifty grand a year to coach Michigan. I
[15:08] Speaker 1: don't think you would have to pay him. I think
[15:10] Speaker 1: he would pay a fee. So we'll see. I'm sure
[15:14] Speaker 1: there are mystery candidates that have spoken to Michigan that
[15:16] Speaker 1: we don't know about. But it's fascinating given I think
[15:20] Speaker 1: the uncertainty around Ward Manual that we have an interim
[15:22] Speaker 1: president at Michigan to deal with here A that's a
[15:27] Speaker 1: heavy job right now. That is a heavy job with
[15:30] Speaker 1: a lot behind it right now, And I'm sure they're
[15:32] Speaker 1: gonna have to pay a premium with everything right with
[15:35] Speaker 1: an assistant pool this late in the game, with nil stuff,
[15:38] Speaker 1: new guys gonna have to convince a ton of players
[15:41] Speaker 1: making a butt. They signed the number one running back,
[15:43] Speaker 1: they have Bryce Underwood, like, there's a lot of money
[15:45] Speaker 1: tied up in this current roster before whatever we see
[15:48] Speaker 1: from this portal stage with Michigan. It's a heavy job.
[15:53] Speaker 1: It's in a heavy ask right now.
[15:55] Speaker 2: We'll see, we will absolutely see. I saw something that
[15:59] Speaker 2: reference to them wanting to try and get a guy
[16:01] Speaker 2: in place by January the second. So look, it would
[16:04] Speaker 2: probably behoove him at this point. Take some time and
[16:06] Speaker 2: make sure you get it right. If nothing more, give
[16:09] Speaker 2: everything else a chance to die down, because it's still
[16:12] Speaker 2: very much, very much out in the public sphere. What's
[16:15] Speaker 2: been going on up at Michigan. What was Sharon Moore
[16:17] Speaker 2: being relieved of command, all the other stuff that followed.
[16:21] Speaker 2: Not a great situation up there been reading conflicting reports
[16:25] Speaker 2: about whether or not it is still an attractive job
[16:27] Speaker 2: to some of the top candidates. You would understand if
[16:29] Speaker 2: it wasn't clearly, you would still understand if it was,
[16:33] Speaker 2: because it's Michigan.
[16:34] Speaker 1: So I don't know.
[16:35] Speaker 2: I did the thing that I would react most to,
[16:37] Speaker 2: And I look, Jedfish isn't going to stay at Washington
[16:40] Speaker 2: all that long. He's just not That's not who Jedfish is.
[16:43] Speaker 2: It doesn't matter where he's coaching, it's just not that guy.
[16:46] Speaker 2: But I reacted a little bit to seeing Kenny Dillingham
[16:51] Speaker 2: get so emotional after one of his practices, the press
[16:55] Speaker 2: was asking him about, you know, potential interests, what have
[16:59] Speaker 2: you and other and he teared up. He got real
[17:02] Speaker 2: emotional about it, and my thought was, well, you don't
[17:04] Speaker 2: usually react like that if you're staying put right. He's
[17:07] Speaker 2: just emotional guy though, But he is an emotional guy.
[17:10] Speaker 2: I don't want to read too deeply into that, but
[17:13] Speaker 2: it was notable to me, if nothing more, just because
[17:15] Speaker 2: you know how it is this time of year when
[17:17] Speaker 2: we've got these big openings. Everyone is looking for whatever
[17:20] Speaker 2: little tell they can find, and I wasn't sure how
[17:23] Speaker 2: to take that. We know he's emotional and fiery, and
[17:26] Speaker 2: that's part of why we like him. Yeah, just wasn't
[17:29] Speaker 2: sure how to interpret that little emotional outpouring that we
[17:33] Speaker 2: saw after practice.
[17:34] Speaker 1: You're also catching me on the wrong day when I'm
[17:36] Speaker 1: seeing all these guys, like, why are you going to
[17:37] Speaker 1: leave the sun to come to this part of the world.
[17:40] Speaker 1: If you're paying millions of dollars to stay in the sun,
[17:43] Speaker 1: why don't you just hang out there? Why don't you
[17:45] Speaker 1: just enjoy? What is that voice that's me? Just like
[17:49] Speaker 1: pulling Kenny Dillingham aside after practice, be like dude, don't
[17:52] Speaker 1: even why would you even consider this?
[17:53] Speaker 2: Dude?
[17:54] Speaker 1: Just stick around Scottsdale. You're fine. That's that voice right now.
[17:57] Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm the literal devil on the sun. Devil
[18:01] Speaker 1: head coaches shoulder telling him like, forget what are you doing? No, no, no, no,
[18:05] Speaker 1: no no, just hang everything's cool here, hang out. You
[18:07] Speaker 1: got a nice path of the playoff. You've already been
[18:09] Speaker 1: in the playoff? Should it be Texas? Like, just be cool,
[18:12] Speaker 1: get an extension, fake interest and be cool? All right?
[18:17] Speaker 2: And uh our final bit of news here. And this
[18:20] Speaker 2: has been developing over the course of the day. We're
[18:23] Speaker 2: recording this on Monday, around one thirty Eastern time. Yeah,
[18:27] Speaker 2: got some portal names.
[18:28] Speaker 1: Dan oh, and that is heating up on this cold,
[18:32] Speaker 1: cold day, the portal names intending to hit the portal.
[18:36] Speaker 1: Those names are heating up.
[18:37] Speaker 2: DJ Lagway to the transfer portal, Brendan Soresby to the
[18:42] Speaker 2: transfer portal, Aiden Chiles to the transfer portal. Kenny Minshe
[18:47] Speaker 2: jumped in a few days ago, but Kenny minscheew noting
[18:49] Speaker 2: backup will be highly regarded in this portal cycle to
[18:53] Speaker 2: the transfer portal, and most notably, just before we hit
[18:55] Speaker 2: the go button here Dylan Ryola expected to enter or
[19:00] Speaker 2: the transfer portal Dan, So there's going to be some
[19:04] Speaker 2: far reaching ramifications for this. Royola was a centerpiece for
[19:10] Speaker 2: the project that Matt Ruhle was building out in Lincoln.
[19:14] Speaker 2: Matt Rule, of course, just got an enormous extension to
[19:16] Speaker 2: stay put if he loses Royola again. There was some
[19:20] Speaker 2: hints of this, right, They got rid.
[19:22] Speaker 1: Of Donovan Royola, his uncle who was the offensive line coach. Dylan.
[19:27] Speaker 2: You and I, I know we have disagreed at times
[19:30] Speaker 2: or whether or not Dilan Royola is any good. But
[19:32] Speaker 2: Dylan Royola, if nothing more, is a name that will
[19:35] Speaker 2: definitely garner some interest in this transfer portal cycle. I'm
[19:39] Speaker 2: sure there will be no shortage of suitors. We will
[19:41] Speaker 2: see what he can do at a different locale. But
[19:44] Speaker 2: this is just the start of this, bro. Yeah, We're
[19:48] Speaker 2: going to see many more names that enter the transfer portal,
[19:52] Speaker 2: not just high profile guys at quarterback, but all throughout.
[19:55] Speaker 2: This is not anything that is slowing down anytime soon.
[19:58] Speaker 1: So now I'll go up.
[19:59] Speaker 2: There will be other big names, but it's gonna be
[20:01] Speaker 2: hard to top Rail in terms of just name power
[20:05] Speaker 2: that are going to be part of this thing.
[20:07] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, look, you're gonna we've already seen some
[20:09] Speaker 1: top receivers. We've seen some top I mean not all
[20:13] Speaker 1: at the power conference level. I know I saw it.
[20:15] Speaker 1: Was it Danny, is it Scutero, Scudero, whatever, It's Santose State,
[20:19] Speaker 1: you know, super prolific. There's a big wake forest defensive
[20:22] Speaker 1: lineman who just went in and guys who can come
[20:24] Speaker 1: in and be like one man disruption crews along defensive
[20:28] Speaker 1: lines and change the outlook of what a team looks
[20:30] Speaker 1: like upfront and how much gravity is you know, assigned
[20:33] Speaker 1: to them. They're gonna be in high demand.
[20:35] Speaker 2: Obviously, that's what Texas guys. That was the Texas Tech
[20:38] Speaker 2: model this.
[20:39] Speaker 1: Well, they rebuilt the entire starting defensive line, I believe.
[20:42] Speaker 1: But even like you look at like like Nick s
[20:44] Speaker 1: Gorton when he went to A and M from Prdue,
[20:46] Speaker 1: like those guys are just gonna be in demand, like
[20:47] Speaker 1: the best of Bear Alexander this year at Oregon he
[20:50] Speaker 1: announced he's coming back by the way next season to Oregon.
[20:53] Speaker 1: But yeah, this is that season, and I think what
[20:56] Speaker 1: you're going to see a lot of is calculus be
[20:59] Speaker 1: high the scenes. I don't think Sam Levitt is in
[21:02] Speaker 1: but that's been a story that there seems to be
[21:04] Speaker 1: smoke there, so not reporting that, but I don't think
[21:07] Speaker 1: he was at like the year end banquet and Kenny
[21:09] Speaker 1: Dillingham reportedly like wished him the best in the future
[21:12] Speaker 1: kind of thing. I think there are a lot of
[21:15] Speaker 1: these guys who are being paid like all conference quarterbacks
[21:18] Speaker 1: because they came in with those sort of aspirations and
[21:22] Speaker 1: hopes that like this high four star, five star guy
[21:25] Speaker 1: should be competing to be you know, all big ten,
[21:28] Speaker 1: all SEC whatever. And in the case of like Aiden
[21:32] Speaker 1: Childs at Michigan State coming over with Jonathan Smith and
[21:35] Speaker 1: from the West Coast, that they're being paid on a
[21:37] Speaker 1: certain level and the production and results aren't meeting it,
[21:42] Speaker 1: and behind the scenes, the money people are like, I
[21:44] Speaker 1: don't think we want to pay this dude one point
[21:46] Speaker 1: eight million dollars. I don't think we want to pay
[21:48] Speaker 1: this dude nine hundred and twelve thousand dollars. And so
[21:51] Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm not saying that these quarterbacks all
[21:53] Speaker 1: wanted to stay, but I think in this era there
[21:56] Speaker 1: are some like salary cap decisions that are at play here,
[22:01] Speaker 1: and so that wouldn't surprise me. Obviously, Kenny minshe is
[22:03] Speaker 1: a different case because he didn't play at Notre Dame,
[22:06] Speaker 1: but I think he is heralded as you know, potentially
[22:09] Speaker 1: valuable dude in the way that Steve Angeli showed a
[22:12] Speaker 1: good amount of flash at Syracuse early on in the season.
[22:15] Speaker 1: But yeah, I and hiss of Brandon Sorez. But he
[22:18] Speaker 1: was very good for Cincinnati a lot of the time,
[22:21] Speaker 1: and so I think he's looking to see what his
[22:23] Speaker 1: market is, perhaps at a bigger place. But all these
[22:26] Speaker 1: situations are different. But when you look at like Ryola Lagway,
[22:31] Speaker 1: it was like new coach going to like sign off
[22:34] Speaker 1: on that maybe not, maybe not. You start off and
[22:37] Speaker 1: find your own guy who fits what you want to do,
[22:39] Speaker 1: maybe a little bit better, and you didn't recruit him.
[22:42] Speaker 1: That's what's at play here to me. And I guess
[22:44] Speaker 1: Bryce Underwood would be another domino here because whoever is
[22:48] Speaker 1: the new Michigan coach is not the guy who recruited him,
[22:51] Speaker 1: and is you know, not going to be running a
[22:53] Speaker 1: system necessarily that was sold to Bryce Underwood. We'll see.
[22:58] Speaker 1: So we a lot of eight potential names out there, absolutely.
[23:01] Speaker 2: So Soresby is also exploring whether or not to go pro,
[23:04] Speaker 2: which is an.
[23:05] Speaker 1: Option for him.
[23:06] Speaker 2: But as you said, had a really really good year
[23:08] Speaker 2: that the two things that kept bouncing around in my head.
[23:11] Speaker 2: A is Royl going to go to Texas Tech and
[23:13] Speaker 2: complete them a home cycle. I could see them being
[23:18] Speaker 2: in a sort of now, despite the fact that Texas
[23:22] Speaker 2: Tech people don't like us talk about this openly. They've
[23:27] Speaker 2: got the money man there obviously willing to spend. We'll
[23:30] Speaker 2: see how it goes for him this year in the
[23:32] Speaker 2: college football playoff, but I think they have aspirations to
[23:34] Speaker 2: be more of a fixture than just a one time thing.
[23:37] Speaker 1: I did joke in like early October that DJ, I
[23:40] Speaker 1: know you did go to Texas Tech.
[23:41] Speaker 2: I know, and we're closer. We're closer, So I want
[23:44] Speaker 2: to see what Iol ends up. I'm curious to see
[23:46] Speaker 2: what the market looks like for him. Certainly there will
[23:48] Speaker 2: be plenty of suitors again, whether you think he's good
[23:51] Speaker 2: or not.
[23:52] Speaker 1: The Lagway thing. By the way, I did buy extra
[23:56] Speaker 1: storage in my Gmail inbox for all the apologies that
[23:59] Speaker 1: will come in from the brass so I do you
[24:02] Speaker 1: won't be getting like the bounce back like this inbox
[24:05] Speaker 1: is full kind of thing. I did, you know, get
[24:06] Speaker 1: out ahead of that.
[24:08] Speaker 2: The Lagway thing, I think is crushing for Florida people.
[24:12] Speaker 2: And that's not even to say that DJ Lagway was
[24:14] Speaker 2: all that good the second half of the year. There
[24:15] Speaker 2: was a lot going on there, mind you, and they
[24:17] Speaker 2: were injured and so there. It's a little bit more
[24:20] Speaker 2: nuanced than to just say DJ Lagway wasn't very good.
[24:23] Speaker 2: But there were definite games this year where it's like
[24:26] Speaker 2: this dude kind of seems like he's getting worse. He's
[24:28] Speaker 2: making some bad decisions. He had bright spots. I mean,
[24:31] Speaker 2: I still think the ceiling for him is extraordinarily high.
[24:34] Speaker 2: He might be the number one guy in the portal.
[24:36] Speaker 2: But Layne Kiffin, I'll get it all fixed. I just
[24:40] Speaker 2: remember we talked with our friend David Waters from Gator's Breakdown. Yeah,
[24:45] Speaker 2: and he painted the picture of DJ Lagway being a
[24:50] Speaker 2: Florida guy through and through, like just love the university
[24:54] Speaker 2: and it at the time we spoke, was hard for
[24:57] Speaker 2: him to come up with a situation where Lagway would
[25:00] Speaker 2: want to leave. But the vultures are out when the
[25:02] Speaker 2: coach gets fired. Clearly there is money to be spent.
[25:06] Speaker 1: And he's not local, He's not local to the state
[25:08] Speaker 1: of Florida.
[25:09] Speaker 2: Correct, yeah, correct, So long story short, he is another
[25:13] Speaker 2: name that I think is going to be supremely interesting
[25:15] Speaker 2: and there are going to be more to follow. Whether
[25:17] Speaker 2: it's Levitt where you always have a couple guys that
[25:19] Speaker 2: are unexpected, maybe Lagway rises to that level. I don't know.
[25:23] Speaker 2: For me, kind of does a little bit. I didn't
[25:25] Speaker 2: expect that he'd be jumping in the portal this quickly.
[25:28] Speaker 2: I'm curious to see who else follows suit, because we
[25:31] Speaker 2: know there will be many surprises here to follow.
[25:34] Speaker 1: And by the way, some of these guys might jump
[25:37] Speaker 1: back to their team, they might negotiate, they might have
[25:39] Speaker 1: a change of heart, they might reconnect with somebody that's
[25:43] Speaker 1: a new coach or a new coordinator or something and
[25:45] Speaker 1: feel like, you know what, maybe that place wasn't so
[25:47] Speaker 1: bad after all. I am not.
[25:49] Speaker 2: I am still not used to seeing the posts on
[25:53] Speaker 2: social media talking about players renegotiating their contracts, like Lenora's Sellars.
[26:00] Speaker 2: It was sort of a new story within the last
[26:02] Speaker 2: forty eight hours or so that Leonoris is in the
[26:04] Speaker 2: process of renegotiating his deal with South Carolina to stay put.
[26:10] Speaker 2: I've seen a couple other such posts around college football,
[26:14] Speaker 2: various players renegotiate. USC was one that held onto a
[26:17] Speaker 2: couple guys I think on defense. So new era, it
[26:21] Speaker 2: is definitely requiring us to rethink how we treat the
[26:25] Speaker 2: sport and think about the sport and talk about the sport.
[26:27] Speaker 2: But this is just where we're at, and you're right, Yeah,
[26:30] Speaker 2: you're right. It could absolutely mean that some of these
[26:32] Speaker 2: guys are coming back. Maybe they just want to test
[26:33] Speaker 2: the waters.
[26:35] Speaker 1: Yeah, look to see what their leverage is. It's entirely possible.
[26:38] Speaker 1: We saw that with what Oklahoma and one of their
[26:40] Speaker 1: prize defensive linemen last portal cycle and he decided to return,
[26:45] Speaker 1: I want to say, David Stone. So yeah, all fascinating stuff.
[26:50] Speaker 1: And the portal hasn't even technically opened yet. No, so
[26:54] Speaker 1: I want to say the portal is open longer for
[26:56] Speaker 1: players playing in the National Championship as well. They extend
[27:00] Speaker 1: and that timeline for them. So even though the portal
[27:04] Speaker 1: is like that first week or so in January, it
[27:06] Speaker 1: does extend a little bit farther out as well to
[27:10] Speaker 1: give some of those guys added time to figure out
[27:12] Speaker 1: their future. So yeah, there will continue to be big
[27:15] Speaker 1: names in especially as you know, this has been a
[27:17] Speaker 1: pretty active coaching carousel cycle. This is Tie's favorite time
[27:23] Speaker 1: for good reason. I love it.
[27:24] Speaker 2: By the way, I was looking at a bunch of
[27:27] Speaker 2: stuff just our coaching carousel game to see how many
[27:31] Speaker 2: openings there were, and we're up till like seventeen wow.
[27:36] Speaker 2: Four openings so far this year. Many of them have
[27:40] Speaker 2: been filled. Most of them have been filled. There was
[27:42] Speaker 2: one other one that we found out about and it
[27:45] Speaker 2: wasn't a huge surprise, but it was notable. Kyle Whittingham
[27:49] Speaker 2: saw that going to be stepping away at Utaw. They
[27:51] Speaker 2: of course had a coach in waiting in Morgan Scaley,
[27:54] Speaker 2: and he's going to be taken over the reins.
[27:56] Speaker 1: I saw.
[27:57] Speaker 2: Stu mandel Or, a friend from the Athletic pointed out
[27:59] Speaker 2: that Kyle Whittingham is not full on retiring. He is
[28:03] Speaker 2: willing to entertain other offers if one comes available. What
[28:07] Speaker 2: that means is anyone's guess, but he will not be
[28:11] Speaker 2: the coach at Utah next year. Kyle Whittingham steps away
[28:14] Speaker 2: after a really, really brilliant career as Utah coach. Was
[28:17] Speaker 2: very solid for a long time in Salt Lake, but
[28:20] Speaker 2: going to pass the torch now to Morgan Scalley, yes.
[28:23] Speaker 1: Who has been a long time defensive coordinator, and Kyle Whittingham.
[28:27] Speaker 1: The wording I saw was stepping down. Stepping is very
[28:29] Speaker 1: carefully worded, stepping down, not retiring. So a lot of
[28:33] Speaker 1: people will quick to point out, like, oh, the mischie
[28:35] Speaker 1: like Kyle Whittingham's not going to Michigan him. He just
[28:38] Speaker 1: does not seem like a fit at all. And I
[28:42] Speaker 1: think Kyle Whittingham will be a fit for literally every school.
[28:45] Speaker 1: But I think that would be the last thing you
[28:47] Speaker 1: would want in his position right now, when maybe he
[28:52] Speaker 1: will take some time before figure out what he's going
[28:54] Speaker 1: to do next. But uh, that seems seems hot, tie,
[28:57] Speaker 1: Isn't that the like that's a it's a place that's
[29:00] Speaker 1: hot and in a good way, in a but not
[29:01] Speaker 1: so good way. So I can't see that right now.
[29:05] Speaker 1: But yeah, we're seeing a lot of like staff movement
[29:07] Speaker 1: around the sport as well, new coaches making coordinator hires
[29:10] Speaker 1: in the coordinator shuffling game, a lot of interesting hires
[29:13] Speaker 1: all over the place. You know, Blake Baker's sticking around LSU,
[29:16] Speaker 1: will Stein's making hires at Kentucky. Same goes for Auburn.
[29:19] Speaker 1: You know, DJ Diurkins sticking around for Alex golesh Florida's
[29:22] Speaker 1: making hires, Virginia Tech's making hires, James Franklin, Matt Campbell's
[29:26] Speaker 1: making hires Penn State. So this is the actual part.
[29:30] Speaker 1: I think what Jim Knowle's going to Tennessee because Tim
[29:32] Speaker 1: Banks was let go. So I kind of love the
[29:36] Speaker 1: coordinator part of this all more than I love the
[29:38] Speaker 1: head coach, because that sort of lets my imagination run
[29:42] Speaker 1: a little bit more. I saw Jay Bateman is on
[29:46] Speaker 1: his way leaving at Texas A and m never been
[29:50] Speaker 1: a Jay Bateman guy, but no, I know that he's
[29:53] Speaker 1: He's sort of well traveled at this point. But no,
[29:57] Speaker 1: I really do. I think that there was smoke around
[29:59] Speaker 1: what Kendall Brile's at South Carolina right, but nothing is
[30:02] Speaker 1: official there, And Shane Biemer was like sort of pumping
[30:04] Speaker 1: the brakes and everybody getting over their skis. So I
[30:07] Speaker 1: do I really like all that movement to see how
[30:11] Speaker 1: how places are evaluating these guys. Dan, we got playoff games, yes,
[30:16] Speaker 1: we don't time of the week. We got four of them.
[30:22] Speaker 1: They start on Friday night.
[30:23] Speaker 2: We'll get back to you guys before long and let
[30:25] Speaker 2: you know if we're doing any kind of live watch
[30:27] Speaker 2: along situation. Yes, Friday Night, the Big One at eight
[30:31] Speaker 2: pm on ABC and ESPN, called by Chris Fowler and
[30:36] Speaker 2: Kirk kurb Street. It is the nine seed the Alabama
[30:39] Speaker 2: Crimson tied at a mark of ten and three, a
[30:42] Speaker 2: one and a half point road favorite against the eight
[30:46] Speaker 2: seed Oklahoma Sooners, who finished their year ten and two
[30:51] Speaker 2: of note. Oklahoma's won the last two meetings between these teams.
[30:55] Speaker 2: I believe, and I do need to fact check this,
[30:58] Speaker 2: so forgive me if I get this wrong. I believe
[31:01] Speaker 2: that Oklahoma would be the first team in history if
[31:04] Speaker 2: they win. Yeah, to beat Alabama three times in two seasons, Man,
[31:12] Speaker 2: that would be wild new world. Man got all sorts
[31:15] Speaker 2: of new stuff going on. Oklahoma did win the first
[31:18] Speaker 2: time that these teams played, back in week twelve, mid
[31:21] Speaker 2: November twenty three to twenty one. That game took place
[31:25] Speaker 2: in Tuscaloosa.
[31:27] Speaker 1: I went back. I rewatched it.
[31:29] Speaker 2: Wanted to get the flavor for what went down. Story
[31:32] Speaker 2: of the game was Oklahoma getting seventeen points off turnovers.
[31:36] Speaker 1: That's the thing. Even though they won this game on the.
[31:40] Speaker 2: Road, which is an impressive win. Their post game expectancy
[31:45] Speaker 2: was only five percent, which means if you run it
[31:48] Speaker 2: back through the computer, if you get it to spit
[31:51] Speaker 2: out an adjusted scoring margin, the computer says that Alabama
[31:56] Speaker 2: was twelve points better.
[31:57] Speaker 1: For whatever that's worth, tea right, because of what Oklahoma
[32:00] Speaker 1: really couldn't accomplish on offense. That's correct. If they played
[32:03] Speaker 1: this game out one hundred times, with Oklahoma accomplishing what
[32:07] Speaker 1: they could on offense and obviously what they did on defense,
[32:10] Speaker 1: the outcome ninety five out of one hundred times is
[32:13] Speaker 1: Alabama's Alabama.
[32:14] Speaker 2: That's her comfortable margin. Now, the numbers don't mean everything,
[32:17] Speaker 2: They don't mean everything. That's why they play. That's why
[32:19] Speaker 2: they play. Does hint though, that Alabama, you know, had
[32:23] Speaker 2: a little bit of bad luck Oklahoma a little bit
[32:26] Speaker 2: lucky in that first matchup. Now, that said, the counterpoint here,
[32:33] Speaker 2: Alabama's offense has not been as killer over the back
[32:36] Speaker 2: half of the schedule. No, over the back half of
[32:40] Speaker 2: the extreme back half of the schedule, throughout the month
[32:42] Speaker 2: of November to present.
[32:43] Speaker 1: They haven't looked like a playoff team since like week seven,
[32:45] Speaker 1: week eight, somewhere in there. Yeah, if you take out
[32:48] Speaker 1: that Eastern Illinois game LSU, Oklahoma, Auburn Georgia. In every case,
[32:57] Speaker 1: every case.
[32:57] Speaker 2: The offense fell short of whatever the pre game projections were.
[33:02] Speaker 2: So I bring this to you now asking this very
[33:04] Speaker 2: simple question. I said there was a little bit of
[33:08] Speaker 2: luck in that first game. How much luck was it really?
[33:13] Speaker 2: Or were teams just figuring out how to stop the
[33:16] Speaker 2: Alabama offense, which, as we've said time and again is
[33:19] Speaker 2: a very one dimensional, very dependent on ty Simpson.
[33:27] Speaker 1: I don't think it was luck because I think the
[33:28] Speaker 1: best thing in this game is the Oklahoma defense. I
[33:31] Speaker 1: think the single best unit, the single best experience in
[33:33] Speaker 1: terms of you know, football excellence or whatever, is what
[33:35] Speaker 1: Oklahoma fields on defense. That's a terribly difficult thing to
[33:40] Speaker 1: figure out and succeed against. And so while I think
[33:44] Speaker 1: the end result of Oklahoma winning that game in that
[33:47] Speaker 1: specific manner is unusual, I think when you're propelled by
[33:53] Speaker 1: a defense like that, you can't call it luck. And
[33:55] Speaker 1: even with Alabama not looking like a powerful team for
[33:59] Speaker 1: the past few weeks, even still like they move the
[34:02] Speaker 1: ball some against Oklahoma, they strung together longer scoring drives.
[34:07] Speaker 1: Ty Simpson wasn't a full on wreck in this game.
[34:10] Speaker 1: He wasn't the most you know, careful with the ball,
[34:13] Speaker 1: but he completed passes. I think it was Josh Cuavis
[34:16] Speaker 1: had like a pretty good game. They succeeded to the
[34:18] Speaker 1: tight end a good deal. I mean. The other sort
[34:21] Speaker 1: of the quieter part of the Alabama struggles is like
[34:24] Speaker 1: Ryan Williams has not been a factor in quite some time.
[34:26] Speaker 1: It's been a lot of like three for forties and
[34:29] Speaker 1: like five for twenty eight's, Like, oh, he hasn't been
[34:32] Speaker 1: a stretch of I mean, it's been a stretch of
[34:35] Speaker 1: time ten games. They've yeah, ten games since he had
[34:38] Speaker 1: more than one hundred yards receiving. And I don't even
[34:40] Speaker 1: need one hundred yards. I just need him affecting the
[34:43] Speaker 1: game in a significant way to like cause gravity from
[34:46] Speaker 1: the defense, and he hasn't done that in a minute.
[34:49] Speaker 1: Like when he does get the ball, he can be electric.
[34:51] Speaker 1: But I don't know if it's them not finding creative
[34:53] Speaker 1: ways to get him the ball, or it's the lack
[34:55] Speaker 1: of run game that opens up passing lanes, whatever it is.
[34:58] Speaker 1: The protection hasn't been consistent, that has not been a
[35:01] Speaker 1: huge factor in Alabama's season and success. And now you're
[35:04] Speaker 1: taking this offense which has struggled to be to find
[35:08] Speaker 1: consistent explosion to Norman against a killer defense with playmakers
[35:14] Speaker 1: on all three levels. And you're sort of scratching me
[35:18] Speaker 1: where I itch? What was the line from the Seinfeld
[35:21] Speaker 1: like the swirl versus the pinch? Like it's just the
[35:24] Speaker 1: move right? You're telling me that Oklahoma's defense at home
[35:28] Speaker 1: is a dog? Is that what you're trying to tell me?
[35:30] Speaker 2: Here?
[35:31] Speaker 1: Ty?
[35:32] Speaker 2: They are a one and a half point dog at
[35:34] Speaker 2: time of recording.
[35:35] Speaker 1: I just I don't like the Oklahoma offense. But if
[35:39] Speaker 1: you're telling me they're playing at home with a lot
[35:41] Speaker 1: on the line against a team that just got absolutely
[35:45] Speaker 1: demolished with no repercussions in the SEC Championship game, Alabama
[35:50] Speaker 1: does have second life. We have seen a team as
[35:52] Speaker 1: recently as last year given second life, and Ohio State
[35:56] Speaker 1: didn't play in the Big Ten Championship game last year.
[35:59] Speaker 1: But you do have this opportunity to get right, to recover,
[36:02] Speaker 1: to get healthy, to evaluate what's been going wrong. Alabama
[36:06] Speaker 1: is coached by smart dudes. No matter what Alabama fans
[36:09] Speaker 1: probably rightfully feel, I believe that somewhere in Ryan Grubb's
[36:14] Speaker 1: brain and Kaylen Devor's brain and Ty Simpson's brain, like,
[36:17] Speaker 1: I feel like there is excellence in there somewhere that
[36:21] Speaker 1: can be tapped into against Oklahoma. I'm less clear on,
[36:25] Speaker 1: but I'm not writing this Alabama offense off entirely. But
[36:28] Speaker 1: I do think situationally, I'm going with Oklahoma here at home,
[36:33] Speaker 1: with the defense, with the crowd, and it's nighttime, right,
[36:38] Speaker 1: this is Friday night, Friday night, so people taking workoff,
[36:41] Speaker 1: taking school off, worked into a frenzy holiday time. I
[36:46] Speaker 1: just think everything is pointing to the Sooners here. I
[36:49] Speaker 1: don't know, Ty, Maybe you can convince me otherwise if
[36:51] Speaker 1: you feel otherwise. How do you feel?
[36:53] Speaker 2: I don't feel strongly about this one way or another.
[36:56] Speaker 1: Oh toy, get off the fence.
[36:57] Speaker 2: I don't Why don't this is a show about honesty.
[36:59] Speaker 2: I don't feel I would not bet this game with
[37:03] Speaker 2: American dollars because I don't have a strong lean one
[37:07] Speaker 2: way or another. One incredible like eye popping stat that
[37:12] Speaker 2: I pulled out from the first matchup this year, Oklahoma
[37:16] Speaker 2: has blitzed on about twenty nine percent of opposing dropbacks.
[37:22] Speaker 2: You know what the percentage was in that first Alabama game?
[37:25] Speaker 2: How often they will sixty seven percent of the time.
[37:28] Speaker 1: Damn wow.
[37:31] Speaker 2: Two out of every three dropbacks they were coming at
[37:34] Speaker 2: ty Simpson. And in fairness, the Bama line did an
[37:37] Speaker 2: excellent job.
[37:38] Speaker 1: Against the blitz.
[37:39] Speaker 2: Despite all of that blitzing, Oklahoma still didn't get as
[37:43] Speaker 2: much pressure as you would expect. Now, they still did.
[37:46] Speaker 2: They got four sacks, They did speed up Ty Simpson,
[37:49] Speaker 2: so it was successful, but the Bama line did its part.
[37:54] Speaker 1: It just clearly was part.
[37:56] Speaker 2: Of the game plan from Brent Venables, which totally tracks
[37:58] Speaker 2: with the Venables brand of DEFA hence, and I think
[38:01] Speaker 2: it is the template for what we're going to see
[38:03] Speaker 2: in this game. I don't know they're going to blitz
[38:05] Speaker 2: as much, but they're absolutely going to attack, attack, tack
[38:10] Speaker 2: the same way they did the first game to try
[38:12] Speaker 2: and force some mistakes. And that's the biggest question for me.
[38:16] Speaker 2: To what end does Oklahoma stick to that same plan,
[38:19] Speaker 2: And if so, how does Alabama counter it right?
[38:22] Speaker 1: How do they counter it? Because they saw it once?
[38:24] Speaker 2: What can they do differently now they get themselves in
[38:27] Speaker 2: a position to score a few more points.
[38:29] Speaker 1: The math likes Bama. It does well. The math likes Bama.
[38:33] Speaker 1: If we see what Oklahoma struggles again with with what
[38:39] Speaker 1: they struggled last time with what is it about a month
[38:41] Speaker 1: ago now? Yep, November fifteenth. So the math likes Alabama
[38:46] Speaker 1: if the rhythm of the game remains identical. The rhythm
[38:48] Speaker 1: of the game is not going to be identical to me.
[38:50] Speaker 1: I don't think. I think Oklahoma wins this and here's
[38:53] Speaker 1: going to be the shocker fifty six fifty three. Hold on,
[38:56] Speaker 1: hear me out. No Oklahoma wins this. I think in
[39:01] Speaker 1: similar fashion, but not as like, not in as rare
[39:05] Speaker 1: a way. I just think it's going to be a
[39:07] Speaker 1: seventeen thirteen Sledgie game. I think it's I think sledge game.
[39:11] Speaker 1: I'm with you on that front. I think there's gonna
[39:12] Speaker 1: be some sort of like busted play that Oklahoma succeeds with.
[39:16] Speaker 1: On offense, I think Alabama should be able to move
[39:19] Speaker 1: the ball better than they were able to do against Georgia,
[39:21] Speaker 1: but not with sustained success. So I think there's going
[39:25] Speaker 1: to be some sort of crazy special teams play some
[39:27] Speaker 1: sort of crazy turnover. Once again, I just I don't
[39:30] Speaker 1: think Alabama's playing winning football. They can't run the ball,
[39:33] Speaker 1: they don't have like I like Jeremy Bernard, but they
[39:37] Speaker 1: don't have the gravity in terms of consistent receiving threats,
[39:42] Speaker 1: or they have it, but they haven't able to weaponize
[39:45] Speaker 1: it in the way that we expected them to. And
[39:49] Speaker 1: I just think there's something off that's not necessarily fixable
[39:52] Speaker 1: with a couple extra weeks. So I'm going Oklahoma, rested
[39:55] Speaker 1: at home with the defense to muck this up and
[39:58] Speaker 1: win an Oklahoma style game.
[40:01] Speaker 2: Let me present an opposing point of view, please.
[40:05] Speaker 1: You've picked against Bama many times this year.
[40:07] Speaker 2: I know, I know, and I'm sure some BAMA fans
[40:09] Speaker 2: would prefer that I not say what I'm about to say,
[40:12] Speaker 2: but I'm gonna say it anyway.
[40:13] Speaker 1: Okay, I'm out in Oklahoma.
[40:17] Speaker 2: That's fine, I'm fully out. And the defense is great,
[40:22] Speaker 2: objectively great. The offense is not that good. They can't
[40:27] Speaker 2: run the ball, they're not explosive.
[40:29] Speaker 1: The game plan, as I.
[40:30] Speaker 2: Understand it, is a big play, as you just alluded
[40:34] Speaker 2: with Isaiah Satania, a broken play in some cases to
[40:38] Speaker 2: Isaiah Satania yep or whatever Ja Materier can draw up
[40:42] Speaker 2: in the dirt.
[40:43] Speaker 1: Totally true.
[40:45] Speaker 2: That's kind of it, right, And what I kept thinking
[40:47] Speaker 2: about when I was writing this down, is it not
[40:50] Speaker 2: a weirdly Iowa type conversation with Oklahoma, Like, we know
[40:55] Speaker 2: the defense is good. It's just a matter of what
[40:58] Speaker 2: are they going to be able to squeeze out of
[40:59] Speaker 2: this offense? You know, how much blood are we going
[41:01] Speaker 2: to get from that stone?
[41:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, I've heard jokes about, you know, Alabama taking on
[41:05] Speaker 1: southern Iowa. Yeah, have you? Yeah, I wanted I don't.
[41:10] Speaker 1: I didn't think it was Spencer Hall. I think I
[41:12] Speaker 1: saw it with Spencer Hall. I did not come up
[41:14] Speaker 1: with it. I want to say Spencer did. Yeah.
[41:17] Speaker 2: So I'm just like I look at Oklahoma. They had
[41:20] Speaker 2: an outstanding season. They absolutely deserve to be here. They
[41:23] Speaker 2: absolutely deserve to be hosting this game. It's a huge,
[41:27] Speaker 2: raging success for Brent Venables. I just don't think they're
[41:31] Speaker 2: that good. And I agree, I think it's a lower
[41:33] Speaker 2: scoring game. But I got Bama winning out right twenty
[41:35] Speaker 2: one seventeen.
[41:38] Speaker 1: Okay, I'm fine with that. Oklahoma has not been a
[41:41] Speaker 1: team that has scored I think more than like twenty
[41:45] Speaker 1: twenty five points on offense this year at their best.
[41:47] Speaker 1: I know they scored thirty three against Tennessee. I want
[41:49] Speaker 1: to say, but that was I forget it was a
[41:51] Speaker 1: pick six or a scoop and score. But I get
[41:54] Speaker 1: that you're gonna need to prevent big plays and generate
[41:57] Speaker 1: big plays with some sort of consistency in games like
[42:00] Speaker 1: this and win those big moments. Bred Vennables does not
[42:03] Speaker 1: have a Kalin debor problem. To be clear, though, no
[42:05] Speaker 1: he doesn't. It's vice versa after last season and this year,
[42:08] Speaker 1: so we'll see.
[42:10] Speaker 2: And to be clear, I think whichever team wins this
[42:12] Speaker 2: game loses t Indiana in the next round. Okay, I
[42:14] Speaker 2: think so too. But one step at a time here, Yeah.
[42:18] Speaker 1: Well, Indiana's down a big what defensive lineman? Now? Yeah
[42:21] Speaker 1: against Ohio State.
[42:22] Speaker 2: Yeah, before we go any further, playbolbingo dot com.

[42:53] Speaker 2: You will see the link to get in and play bolbingo.
[42:56] Speaker 2: The way this works, I have pulled out thirty props,
[43:01] Speaker 2: thirty prop bets that could go down, that could hit
[43:04] Speaker 2: over the span of the next week. So the games
[43:07] Speaker 2: between this Friday and next Friday, the nineteenth, and the
[43:10] Speaker 2: twenty sixth, all you have to do is fill out
[43:13] Speaker 2: a bingo card by picking six that you think are
[43:15] Speaker 2: going to hit. Then there's a tiebreaker at the end
[43:20] Speaker 2: of it. We're going to pick a winner. We're going
[43:21] Speaker 2: to play four rounds of that throughout the course of
[43:23] Speaker 2: the offseason.
[43:24] Speaker 1: Yeah, plain and simple.
[43:26] Speaker 2: No confidence pools, no bracket pools, just a bunch of
[43:30] Speaker 2: props to pick from. I picked some off the wall
[43:33] Speaker 2: ones varying degrees of weirdness. You got to pick six.
[43:39] Speaker 2: Winner gets the spoils. We'll talk about that price later.
[43:42] Speaker 1: Let's hope your tie breakers are better than one. You
[43:46] Speaker 1: run the board better, They're better there.
[43:48] Speaker 2: I think I did total yardage in the Oregon James
[43:51] Speaker 2: Madison game.
[43:52] Speaker 1: Okay, Jim Phillips didn't come up with our bul bingo tiebreakers.
[43:56] Speaker 1: He didn't have a first style the.
[43:58] Speaker 2: First rout he did where he had like a million winners.
[44:00] Speaker 1: But I like this this subplot of you being the
[44:04] Speaker 1: last couple of years obsessed with tiebreakers and then and
[44:08] Speaker 1: then screwing our time breaker. Great, that's my way. I
[44:12] Speaker 1: like it. I like a good, healthy board. I'm good
[44:14] Speaker 1: with more voices. But it is kind of funny, all right.
[44:18] Speaker 1: So there you go.
[44:18] Speaker 2: Playbowllbingo dot com. Get in on the action, free for
[44:21] Speaker 2: all to play. I tell your friends we did it

[44:29] Speaker 1: That'll bounce you right over to the post.
[44:31] Speaker 2: Nice Saturday night High Noon Dan on ABC. This is
[44:36] Speaker 2: a McDonough and McElroy game. This is the ten seed
[44:40] Speaker 2: Miami Hurricanes at ten and two going to Kyle Field
[44:45] Speaker 2: to square off against the seven seed Texas A and
[44:48] Speaker 2: m Aggi's. We finished the year eleven and one. A
[44:51] Speaker 2: and m is a three and a half point favorite.
[44:54] Speaker 2: They had a great season, right their first eleven and
[44:56] Speaker 2: zero starts. Since I want to say nineteen ninety two,
[45:00] Speaker 2: only ninety somewhere in that range.
[45:03] Speaker 1: They're here. They deserve to be here.
[45:05] Speaker 2: Got a little hairy from Miami at the end there. Yeah,
[45:08] Speaker 2: I'm not gonna sit here and say they're not deserving
[45:10] Speaker 2: of this.
[45:11] Speaker 1: I think they're very deserving of it. I'm happy for
[45:13] Speaker 1: my clearly a playoff caliber team, absolutely.
[45:15] Speaker 2: Or happy that they are in this game. Yeah, happy
[45:18] Speaker 2: that they're in this game. Didn't play during the regular season.
[45:20] Speaker 2: They did play back in twenty twenty three. I pulled
[45:23] Speaker 2: some stats from that game.
[45:24] Speaker 1: Mm hmm. Miami won forty eight to thirty three behind
[45:28] Speaker 1: three hundred and seventy four yards and five passing touchdowns
[45:31] Speaker 1: from well Hold on twenty twenty three? Would that have
[45:35] Speaker 1: been TVD TVD Tyler Van Dyke, Yeah, I remember that
[45:39] Speaker 1: game that was that was an early game or the
[45:40] Speaker 1: first game or something like that that was looked at
[45:43] Speaker 1: as like, okay, Mario Christaballs figured out offense with Miami
[45:46] Speaker 1: and everything like that, and then less so. But I
[45:49] Speaker 1: remember that being a high point for hopes for the
[45:52] Speaker 1: Miami offensive future for sure.
[45:54] Speaker 2: I was also Jimbo's final season with Texas A and
[45:57] Speaker 2: m I remember. Yeah, these two teams did not play
[46:01] Speaker 2: this year, but they did have a common opponent, my
[46:03] Speaker 2: notre name fighting Irish. Miami won a week one, twenty
[46:07] Speaker 2: seven to twenty four A and one a few weeks
[46:09] Speaker 2: later forty one to forty in South Bend. So all
[46:14] Speaker 2: that context, Dan, I think this is going to be
[46:17] Speaker 2: a very close, a very physical football game. How do
[46:22] Speaker 2: you see this one going down?
[46:24] Speaker 1: So I think there's a couple of different ways to
[46:27] Speaker 1: underthink each of these teams really, where it's like, what
[46:30] Speaker 1: version of Texas A and M either half to half?
[46:33] Speaker 1: What version of Marcel Reed do we get? Texas A
[46:37] Speaker 1: and M has been off? You talk about how Alabama's
[46:39] Speaker 1: been off, Texas A and M has been off, you know,
[46:42] Speaker 1: going back to the South Carolina game, obviously the Texas game,
[46:45] Speaker 1: they haven't been their full selves on either side of
[46:48] Speaker 1: the ball. Really in a little bit, I kind of
[46:51] Speaker 1: think we know Miami for better or worse. I agree
[46:54] Speaker 1: with that in a more secure way than we do
[46:59] Speaker 1: about Texas A and M. And to me, if you're
[47:02] Speaker 1: gonna underthink Miami, it's defense is probably gonna do a
[47:06] Speaker 1: lot of great things, Like they just harass people up front.
[47:09] Speaker 1: The linebackers have been strong, the secondary has been more
[47:13] Speaker 1: together than it was last year, been making a lot
[47:15] Speaker 1: more plays. Now there's the penalty issues on both sides
[47:18] Speaker 1: of the ball for Miami, but obviously the Miami defense
[47:21] Speaker 1: is ahead of the Miami offense, which is still quite good,
[47:24] Speaker 1: just not where it was last season. But to me,
[47:26] Speaker 1: if you're gonna underthink Miami, it's just how many hijinks
[47:30] Speaker 1: does Malachi Tony get up to against Texas A and
[47:33] Speaker 1: M because he is their clear huge play threat now
[47:36] Speaker 1: that they don't have other guys who can. Like the
[47:38] Speaker 1: emergence of Gerard Pringle in the backfield, I think has
[47:41] Speaker 1: been a very positive thing. I think he has been
[47:43] Speaker 1: better and more explosive than the other two backs, was
[47:45] Speaker 1: it Marty Brown and Mark Fletcher? And like what version
[47:50] Speaker 1: of Carson Beck do we get? Obviously he's turnover prone
[47:54] Speaker 1: occasionally in a disastrous way. But I kind of like
[47:58] Speaker 1: this for Miami that it's an early start, though obviously
[48:00] Speaker 1: people are going to be hyped in out of their
[48:02] Speaker 1: minds for a playoff game at Kyle Field. I like
[48:05] Speaker 1: it that it's, you know, at noon Eastern instead of
[48:08] Speaker 1: six thirty, seven thirty whatever Eastern. There is something more
[48:13] Speaker 1: dependable about Miami, But I think there is something more
[48:19] Speaker 1: explosive about Texas A and m on both sides of
[48:22] Speaker 1: the ball. Explosive, Yeah, I think there's something more explosive
[48:25] Speaker 1: about the speed and consistency at receiver of Texas, A
[48:28] Speaker 1: and M. The best of Marcel Reed is more interesting
[48:30] Speaker 1: because of what he can do with his feet than
[48:31] Speaker 1: what Carson Beck can do. The pass rush on both
[48:34] Speaker 1: sides of the ball is I mean, the pass rush
[48:35] Speaker 1: for Miami, the pass rush for Texas A and M
[48:37] Speaker 1: both elite and incredible. I don't trust the A and
[48:40] Speaker 1: M secondary that much. I just they've given up a bunch.
[48:44] Speaker 1: The corners are fine, but not amazing. I think I'm
[48:50] Speaker 1: gonna go with Miami here and I hate it. I
[48:55] Speaker 1: think I'm gonna go with Miami on the road because
[48:59] Speaker 1: there is some thing about the steady nature of Carson
[49:03] Speaker 1: Beck most of the time, the age, the experience, the
[49:07] Speaker 1: experience in big games, where like I just maybe I
[49:11] Speaker 1: just can't shake Marcel read in that second half against Texas,
[49:14] Speaker 1: and that was on the road. But there is something
[49:16] Speaker 1: about Carson Beck. There is something about this Miami defense
[49:20] Speaker 1: that again A and M has had an at times
[49:23] Speaker 1: incredibly elite defense. There's something that I am more familiar
[49:29] Speaker 1: with with Miami. I don't like Mario christ Baul in
[49:32] Speaker 1: big games. I just I have a better concept for
[49:36] Speaker 1: Miami right now. And so I'm leaning that direction. Does
[49:40] Speaker 1: that make sense? It makes total sense. I went back
[49:43] Speaker 1: and forth, and that is another game I wavered on. Yeah.
[49:46] Speaker 2: Kate came downstairs this morning. I was pacing in the
[49:49] Speaker 2: living room. She's like, what's wrong with you? What's going
[49:51] Speaker 2: on here? I'm like, A, Yeah, Texas and M. Miami
[49:53] Speaker 2: has just sort.
[49:54] Speaker 1: Of waved her hand at me and walked away.
[49:56] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you, Like, I have a big question
[50:01] Speaker 2: for each side of this, and I think an X
[50:04] Speaker 2: factor to pay attention to. A and M's been very
[50:09] Speaker 2: very good along both lines. Same is true for Miami.
[50:12] Speaker 2: I mean, both these teams are very very good upfront,
[50:15] Speaker 2: but there are a couple interesting differences here.
[50:17] Speaker 1: A and M's been able to do most of their.
[50:23] Speaker 2: I guess uh pressure generation for lack of better terms,
[50:26] Speaker 2: without blitzing.
[50:27] Speaker 1: That was the name of my tag team, by the way,
[50:29] Speaker 1: in high school, I was one half of the Pressure Generation.
[50:33] Speaker 2: Miami is one of the blitz heaviest teams in college
[50:37] Speaker 2: football right now. And so what I wonder from the
[50:40] Speaker 2: A and M side, what I wonder from the Miami side. Frankly,
[50:44] Speaker 2: when you blitz a guy like Barcel Reed, you got
[50:46] Speaker 2: to worry about his legs totally. He scrambles about twelve
[50:50] Speaker 2: percent of the time. Miami's a little bit more zone
[50:53] Speaker 2: heavy thanre not gonna have their backs to him. They're
[50:54] Speaker 2: going to see them, They're going to spy him. But
[50:57] Speaker 2: I think it's fair to point out that they haven't
[50:58] Speaker 2: played a whole lot of guys like Mars Read. You know,
[51:01] Speaker 2: they were fine against Tommy Castellanos, lost to Kevin Jennings
[51:05] Speaker 2: on the road. Marcel Read, I mean, Marcel reads better
[51:08] Speaker 2: than both those guys are. And so my question is,
[51:11] Speaker 2: what's Miami's plan to stop him?
[51:13] Speaker 1: They played what they played Byron Brown.
[51:15] Speaker 2: He can move, but us friends USF was not exactly
[51:19] Speaker 2: the same caliber of opponent.
[51:21] Speaker 1: But I'm saying the danger that he can provide an
[51:25] Speaker 1: offense is very clear. They handled him quite well.
[51:30] Speaker 2: Okay, they blew them out. So if you want to
[51:32] Speaker 2: tack him onto this conversation or not, that's that's up
[51:35] Speaker 2: to you. But I'm just saying the athletic nature, the
[51:37] Speaker 2: athletic nature for sure. So what's Miami's plan to stop
[51:40] Speaker 2: Marcel Reid and what does that look like? Do they
[51:44] Speaker 2: still bring the blitz with such regularity? Do they change
[51:48] Speaker 2: up what their plan is, I don't know, but that
[51:50] Speaker 2: I'm very interested in seeing what that part of it
[51:52] Speaker 2: looks like. My biggest question is something you alluded to
[51:55] Speaker 2: with A and M, and that's big plays. So like
[51:59] Speaker 2: on the end side, you get a mobile guy like
[52:02] Speaker 2: Marcel Reid. He can dance around back there. His receivers,
[52:06] Speaker 2: many of whom are averaging over ten yards per catch,
[52:10] Speaker 2: give them time to find holes in the zone.
[52:14] Speaker 1: Who knows what happens.
[52:15] Speaker 2: Right, This isn't a Miami defense that's prone to big plays, no,
[52:19] Speaker 2: but it is an A and M offense that is
[52:21] Speaker 2: top twenty in the nation at creating plays with twenty
[52:24] Speaker 2: yards or more. So there's an interesting push pull that
[52:28] Speaker 2: I think is going to go on on that side
[52:29] Speaker 2: of the ball. A and M's gonna need to pop
[52:31] Speaker 2: a few of those if they want to win, because
[52:33] Speaker 2: I don't think you can get into a pickle ball
[52:34] Speaker 2: game with Miami and win. It's a pickleball match, sir, whatever.
[52:39] Speaker 2: Don't don't put down pickleball.
[52:42] Speaker 1: But here's the reason I get the big plays.
[52:46] Speaker 2: Even though Miami has one of the least explosive offenses
[52:50] Speaker 2: in the country per Bill Connelly in the sp Plus
[52:54] Speaker 2: AM's giving up a ton of big plays this year.
[52:56] Speaker 2: They have going to a ton of big plays this year.
[53:00] Speaker 2: Because Miami hasn't generated a ton of explosives does not
[53:03] Speaker 2: mean that they don't have the playmakers to do it.
[53:06] Speaker 2: And I think they do it. You mentioned Malakai Toni.
[53:09] Speaker 2: Malachai Toni dropped exactly zero balls this year as a
[53:12] Speaker 2: true freshman.
[53:13] Speaker 1: Is that true?
[53:15] Speaker 2: Zero point zero percent drop rate this season?
[53:17] Speaker 1: Damn? Which is nuts for a true freshman. He is awesome.
[53:24] Speaker 2: And so I just wonder, like, if A and M
[53:26] Speaker 2: can't get pressure on Carson Beck, there's a very big
[53:29] Speaker 2: risk of a veteran quarterback picking them apart, hitting guys
[53:33] Speaker 2: like Tony. And they got three receivers. Three receivers, well,
[53:36] Speaker 2: they do and they don't.
[53:37] Speaker 1: Didn't they target Malachay Tony twice as many times as
[53:40] Speaker 1: the next guy. They did?
[53:41] Speaker 2: They did, But they got three guys that I look
[53:43] Speaker 2: at and I say, any one of the three can
[53:46] Speaker 2: create a big play if Carson Beck has a moment.
[53:50] Speaker 2: So that to me is the biggest question they on
[53:52] Speaker 2: the A and M side, are they going to be
[53:54] Speaker 2: able to get pressure on Beck? And even though Miami
[53:58] Speaker 2: hasn't generated a ton of explosives. Will they be able
[54:01] Speaker 2: to stop them? Because I do believe they have the playmakers.
[54:03] Speaker 2: The X factor, though, is a Miami offensive line. And
[54:07] Speaker 2: here's why I say that, across the board, one of
[54:11] Speaker 2: the most penalized in college football. This has been a
[54:15] Speaker 2: talking point among the Miami fan base all year. And
[54:17] Speaker 2: I know because I read State of the U I
[54:19] Speaker 2: lork on message boards.
[54:21] Speaker 1: Right, You and I both come underwood. Yeah, we both
[54:23] Speaker 1: do the same kind of thing.
[54:24] Speaker 2: This is exactly the type of game where the false
[54:26] Speaker 2: starts and a few penalties here and there come back
[54:29] Speaker 2: to bite you if you're Miami, because a false start
[54:31] Speaker 2: on like second and eight leads to a third and
[54:34] Speaker 2: six leads to a situation that is very favorable for
[54:38] Speaker 2: the A and M defense, which is the best third
[54:40] Speaker 2: down defense.
[54:40] Speaker 1: In America right now.
[54:41] Speaker 2: Great, So Kyle Field is going to be loud, It's
[54:43] Speaker 2: going to be proud. It's just something to be aware
[54:45] Speaker 2: of here, one of those things that could come back
[54:48] Speaker 2: to bite Miami if things start going south. I think
[54:51] Speaker 2: this is more of a shootout. I do think it's tough.
[54:54] Speaker 2: I do think it's close. I do think it's physical.
[54:57] Speaker 2: But I think this is the best first round matchup
[54:59] Speaker 2: that we're going to get this weekend, and I've got
[55:00] Speaker 2: Miami winning outright. I've got it at thirty eight thirty five.
[55:04] Speaker 2: I think this is going to be a freaking awesome
[55:06] Speaker 2: football game.
[55:08] Speaker 1: So the biggest pause I have in this game is
[55:11] Speaker 1: if we enter into a situation which this is back
[55:13] Speaker 1: and forth in the fourth quarter, exchanging puns, exchanging field goals,
[55:16] Speaker 1: something like that. I got to mash Mike Elco here, right,
[55:20] Speaker 1: I'm mashing the Mike Elko button. I cannot get on
[55:24] Speaker 1: board with Mario Crista ball. If it's tight in the
[55:25] Speaker 1: fourth quarter, I have it as twenty eight to twenty
[55:29] Speaker 1: Miami winning and it not being necessarily back and forth competitive,
[55:35] Speaker 1: but not like a chess match. That's where I would struggle.
[55:39] Speaker 1: If leads are being exchanged in that fourth quarter and
[55:43] Speaker 1: it's looking like it might be an overtime game, that's
[55:46] Speaker 1: when you know the ESPN like win probability graph, my
[55:50] Speaker 1: crystal ball trust probability is going to be all over
[55:54] Speaker 1: the place. It's going to look like the nineteen eighties.
[55:57] Speaker 1: It's going to look like the nineteen twenties, right, It's
[55:59] Speaker 1: going to look like those mar crafts. I'm going Miami
[56:03] Speaker 1: to win with that asterisk. I think they can only
[56:06] Speaker 1: win in one way, and that is controlling this one
[56:10] Speaker 1: for the majority of it. So I'm going Miami here
[56:12] Speaker 1: twenty eight, twenty three point thirty on TNT.
[56:15] Speaker 2: It is the eleven seed two Lane the Green Wave
[56:18] Speaker 2: eleven and two this year won the American going to
[56:22] Speaker 2: Oxford taking on the sixth seeded ole Miss Rebels who
[56:27] Speaker 2: finished eleven and one. They are a seventeen and one
[56:30] Speaker 2: half point favorite. It's gonna be Joe Tess and Jesse
[56:34] Speaker 2: Palmer on the call again this game on TNT. Yeah,
[56:38] Speaker 2: they played earlier this year. Ole Miss won forty five
[56:42] Speaker 2: to ten. They had a two hundred and sixty six
[56:45] Speaker 2: yard edge. It was never close. This was never a
[56:48] Speaker 2: close game. Two big storylines coming into this one. One
[56:53] Speaker 2: is broad and national and I know you've got a
[56:55] Speaker 2: lot to say, so I'm going to tee you up here.
[56:57] Speaker 1: And then the other is the Lank Kiffin thing. Oh
[57:01] Speaker 1: I thought the Lake kiffn was talking about that. That's
[57:03] Speaker 1: a different directions start. Everyone's talking about Lane. Yeah. Yeah.
[57:08] Speaker 2: There is a chorus right now of commentary dunking on
[57:12] Speaker 2: the idea that Tulane and James Madison should be in
[57:14] Speaker 2: the playoffs at all.
[57:15] Speaker 1: I think less about Tulane and more about James Madison
[57:19] Speaker 1: because they're the clear second team in from the G
[57:22] Speaker 1: five G six ranks.
[57:23] Speaker 2: But yes, there is a chorus, right whichever one I mean,
[57:26] Speaker 2: whether you're more against Tulane or more against James Madison,
[57:31] Speaker 2: the mere fact that there are.
[57:32] Speaker 1: Two G five schools in this Yeah. I don't know
[57:35] Speaker 1: if a memo went out.
[57:37] Speaker 2: I didn't see a bat signal in my night sky,
[57:39] Speaker 2: but somebody got, like everybody got the message at once,
[57:43] Speaker 2: right that this was a take that everybody needed to have.
[57:48] Speaker 2: I feel we are uniquely qualified to talk about this
[57:50] Speaker 2: because your alma mater is playing one of them, and
[57:53] Speaker 2: my team got squeezed out at least in part because
[57:56] Speaker 2: of these teams.
[57:57] Speaker 1: Yeah, what's what says little guy more than Oregon and
[58:00] Speaker 1: Notre Dame. What says more than like legendary iconic program
[58:06] Speaker 1: like Notre Dame and most notorious booster behind the scenes
[58:10] Speaker 1: like Oregon's Phil Night. Yeah, Yeah, we're the ones that
[58:12] Speaker 1: are qualified to talk about the underdogs of this all. Yeah,
[58:16] Speaker 1: now I know what you're saying, because Oregon does play
[58:18] Speaker 1: James Madison. No, the messaging is out and it's weird, like,
[58:22] Speaker 1: you know, obviously not going to be surprised by like
[58:23] Speaker 1: the network on which this messaging occurs and the people
[58:26] Speaker 1: behind this messaging, Like, you know, this is the bread
[58:29] Speaker 1: and butter for a lot of these people to say
[58:31] Speaker 1: things like this and to say that there's like some
[58:34] Speaker 1: more like broad societal reason why smaller schools are in
[58:38] Speaker 1: the college football playoff. It's all nonsense. Obviously, of course
[58:42] Speaker 1: you already know that. But we've all sort of agreed
[58:46] Speaker 1: that there are never going to be twelve teams that
[58:49] Speaker 1: can legitimately compete for the national championship, right, We've all
[58:53] Speaker 1: sort of like, for a long time there were no
[58:56] Speaker 1: national championships and two teams which were like, oh yeah,
[58:58] Speaker 1: that makes sense. These are like the showdown at the
[59:00] Speaker 1: end of it, all USC Texas blah blah blah, and
[59:03] Speaker 1: then like four teams like well it's you know, the
[59:05] Speaker 1: talent is more spread, and like we have all these
[59:07] Speaker 1: you know, SEC teams or Big ten teams or Texas whoever,
[59:11] Speaker 1: that we should expand it and make four teams. And
[59:13] Speaker 1: then now we sort of all agree that we're expanding it.
[59:16] Speaker 1: To just like have more football and see more high
[59:19] Speaker 1: quality teams play. And you know, all these other sports
[59:21] Speaker 1: have bigger playoffs, why not college football? But like there
[59:24] Speaker 1: is an understanding that like we are not looking at
[59:27] Speaker 1: number nine, ten, eleven, fourteen, whatever and saying like if
[59:31] Speaker 1: things break right, no, probably not. That's I think that's true.
[59:35] Speaker 1: Is that wrong?
[59:36] Speaker 2: I mean it wasn't really the case last year, But
[59:40] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[59:41] Speaker 1: But in any year, I don't think Miami a number
[59:43] Speaker 1: eleven team. I think Miami's good enough to win it all. Maybe.
[59:47] Speaker 1: I mean last time they went to the State of Texas,
[59:50] Speaker 1: they weren't, right.
[59:51] Speaker 2: I think you could make a realistic case for Miami.
[59:54] Speaker 1: Sure. I think you can make a realistic case for.
[59:56] Speaker 2: A number of teams outside the top four this year, especially,
[1:00:00] Speaker 2: I mean Indiana seems like they're the juggernaut, right, and
[1:00:03] Speaker 2: I guess we have questions now about Ohio State. But
[1:00:07] Speaker 2: like otherwise, I think there are a lot of teams
[1:00:11] Speaker 2: filling out this field. Maybe not so much TU Lane
[1:00:14] Speaker 2: or JMU, which is more to the point here, right,
[1:00:17] Speaker 2: But I think you can make a strong case for
[1:00:19] Speaker 2: some of those teams outside the top four.
[1:00:21] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they have championship elements. Sure, I think
[1:00:23] Speaker 1: Miami has a championship caliber defense. I don't know if
[1:00:26] Speaker 1: they have a championship caliber offense and coaching staff. That's
[1:00:29] Speaker 1: the problem you get into. I think when you start
[1:00:31] Speaker 1: going down like they have really good starters, but what
[1:00:33] Speaker 1: are their twos and threes look like this part of
[1:00:35] Speaker 1: the season, when you're dealing with attrition and depth issues, right,
[1:00:38] Speaker 1: that I think is what separates the teams that are
[1:00:40] Speaker 1: in earnest competing and like have elements that could compete.
[1:00:44] Speaker 1: That's my opinion. Whatever. I just think when you get
[1:00:46] Speaker 1: down to eleven and twelve, like you're taking however many
[1:00:50] Speaker 1: G five, G six teams and they're basically fighting for
[1:00:53] Speaker 1: table scraps, right, They're fighting for in normal years one spot,
[1:00:58] Speaker 1: seventy teams, one spot right from the Mountain West, the
[1:01:01] Speaker 1: Sun Belt Conference, USA, the American whatever, and so usually
[1:01:04] Speaker 1: it's gonna be one spot. Why is it two spots?
[1:01:06] Speaker 1: You're not gonna believe this. It's probably Dabosweeney's fault. It's
[1:01:09] Speaker 1: probably like a member of your country club, it's his
[1:01:12] Speaker 1: fault that he couldn't build a Clemson defense to keep
[1:01:15] Speaker 1: Duke under forty five points. And we're not having this conversation.
[1:01:18] Speaker 1: But nobody assigns blame there, right, nobody assigns blame to
[1:01:22] Speaker 1: schools that are in the gilded conferences because that sort
[1:01:25] Speaker 1: of defeats the purpose because it's so much more difficult
[1:01:28] Speaker 1: tie to win the SEC or the Big Ten or
[1:01:30] Speaker 1: the Big twelve, blah blah blah. And these schools are
[1:01:33] Speaker 1: just like doing their best, which, by the way, these
[1:01:36] Speaker 1: schools and not even just like Tulane and James Madison,
[1:01:39] Speaker 1: all of these schools, the excellent schools in the American
[1:01:41] Speaker 1: or the Sun Belt or whatever, they with regularity lose
[1:01:45] Speaker 1: their coaches all of their time. If they're good, they
[1:01:48] Speaker 1: lose all of their best players. And they're told like
[1:01:51] Speaker 1: that's just the way of the world. They have a
[1:01:53] Speaker 1: fraction of the money to deal with because they're a
[1:01:56] Speaker 1: smaller program and they can't get into a bigger conference.
[1:01:58] Speaker 1: And yet they win ten to eleven games with different coaches,
[1:02:02] Speaker 1: and they build infrastructure, and they figure out ways to
[1:02:04] Speaker 1: recruit and develop and even find guys to transfer in there.
[1:02:08] Speaker 1: And yet we're looking at them as like you haven't
[1:02:10] Speaker 1: earned this, you haven't gone through this, like brutal schedule
[1:02:13] Speaker 1: and so we must put in like Kentucky, ass Texas
[1:02:17] Speaker 1: or something to make this a legitimate tournament, or something
[1:02:19] Speaker 1: like Notre Dame, who's like throwing a hissy fit and
[1:02:22] Speaker 1: won't even play in the postseason because we have James
[1:02:25] Speaker 1: Madison instead of Notre Dame. Like, just there is something
[1:02:28] Speaker 1: about that that you can just like you can miss
[1:02:31] Speaker 1: me with that that apparently like all of these great
[1:02:34] Speaker 1: coaches on the G five, G six level are totally
[1:02:37] Speaker 1: okay to go to Auburn and Florida and Uclair or whatever,
[1:02:40] Speaker 1: but like they didn't earn it at the same time.
[1:02:43] Speaker 1: I just I get why people are making this argument.
[1:02:46] Speaker 1: I just don't know why there are so many like
[1:02:48] Speaker 1: dweeds out there simping for like the SEC, Like, you
[1:02:52] Speaker 1: don't need to do this to yourself. You don't need
[1:02:54] Speaker 1: to debase yourself for Greg Sankee. You just don't. You
[1:02:57] Speaker 1: can just live your life and enjoy football and enjoy
[1:02:59] Speaker 1: like variety for once. We need to watch more Texas
[1:03:03] Speaker 1: against Texas A and M. We need to watch more
[1:03:06] Speaker 1: of this. No, the SEC has five of the ten
[1:03:09] Speaker 1: Power Conference teams in there. Give me a percentage tie
[1:03:11] Speaker 1: fifty fifty percent. People aren't happy people are not happy
[1:03:16] Speaker 1: with fifty percent of the Power Conference teams. I just
[1:03:20] Speaker 1: I think people are punching down because they need to,
[1:03:22] Speaker 1: Like they feel victimized constantly. And there's a lot like
[1:03:25] Speaker 1: worldview at play here that we don't need to get into.
[1:03:27] Speaker 1: But like there is a country club thing where it's like,
[1:03:30] Speaker 1: how dare we let James who's gonna watch James Madison,
[1:03:33] Speaker 1: who's gonna watch? To like just enjoy it. It's football.
[1:03:37] Speaker 1: We're getting more football. And if it's a blow out,
[1:03:39] Speaker 1: it's a blow out. If it's competitive, it's competitive. Like
[1:03:42] Speaker 1: it's okay to like get Korean barbecue once in a while.
[1:03:46] Speaker 1: It just is it's okay to enjoy like the spice
[1:03:50] Speaker 1: of life, or get Korean barbecue every other night. I
[1:03:52] Speaker 1: don't care. But like this idea that like how can
[1:03:55] Speaker 1: you have a playoff with no Texas or actually Vanderbilt,
[1:03:58] Speaker 1: I'd like to watch Vanderbilt would be fun for me
[1:04:00] Speaker 1: to watch in this playoff. Well, Like, I just I
[1:04:03] Speaker 1: don't understand why people are like bending over backwards to
[1:04:05] Speaker 1: like make fun of JMU and Tulane when it is
[1:04:09] Speaker 1: the ACC's fault, it is a Power conference's fault that
[1:04:12] Speaker 1: we're in this situation, and I just I don't know.
[1:04:17] Speaker 1: It bugs me that we have to have this conversation
[1:04:20] Speaker 1: every year when like they're good teams, maybe not as tested,
[1:04:24] Speaker 1: but like Texas, a third of Texas's wins are against
[1:04:28] Speaker 1: G five G six teams, a third of them tie,
[1:04:32] Speaker 1: and we're having this conversation. I just I don't know.
[1:04:35] Speaker 1: I don't think it's a good faith argument. I don't
[1:04:37] Speaker 1: think so either.
[1:04:37] Speaker 2: I don't think it's a good faith argument because, like
[1:04:40] Speaker 2: most takes, none of these are fully baked. If you
[1:04:44] Speaker 2: believe that Tulane and Jmu and whoever else should be excluded,
[1:04:49] Speaker 2: then you also need to present to me an actual plan,
[1:04:54] Speaker 2: a rational way, so that we don't have one hundred
[1:04:57] Speaker 2: and thirty six teams that are playing under the same umbrella,
[1:05:01] Speaker 2: that being FBS. I have not seen any of the
[1:05:04] Speaker 2: takesmen out there present a rational plan for something that
[1:05:07] Speaker 2: lives between the FBS and the FCS. I haven't seen it.
[1:05:12] Speaker 2: If it's out there, i'd send it to me. Soliverbal
[1:05:14] Speaker 2: A Gmail, I haven't seen it. Nobody has sent that
[1:05:16] Speaker 2: to me yet. I would like to see more about that.
[1:05:20] Speaker 2: A plan, Sure, give me a plan, not a take.
[1:05:23] Speaker 2: Give me a plan. Yeah, I'll really do a plan.
[1:05:25] Speaker 2: But until I actually see a plan, the.
[1:05:28] Speaker 1: Plan is all about excluding teams just to be I
[1:05:30] Speaker 1: just think I think that's ridiculous. And again i'm speaking,
[1:05:33] Speaker 1: I know Notre Dame is not.
[1:05:34] Speaker 2: The little guy, okay, And I'm not necessarily a fan
[1:05:38] Speaker 2: of what's been going on here over the last week,
[1:05:40] Speaker 2: not endorsing any of that.
[1:05:41] Speaker 1: Again, diego Pavia, ring of honor ring, but.
[1:05:47] Speaker 2: Either we've got a system that we all agreed to
[1:05:49] Speaker 2: or we don't.
[1:05:51] Speaker 1: They all agreed to this, and.
[1:05:52] Speaker 2: Whether it's the ACC's fault or the Conference Commissioner's fault
[1:05:55] Speaker 2: or the cfp's fault, this is what they are too.
[1:06:00] Speaker 2: And it's one year, so I don't have a problem
[1:06:03] Speaker 2: with it.
[1:06:03] Speaker 1: And I'm with you.
[1:06:04] Speaker 2: I tend to think variety is the spice of lif
[1:06:06] Speaker 2: Let's see what they can do. And we're going to
[1:06:08] Speaker 2: talk about that here in just a second. Furthermore to
[1:06:10] Speaker 2: your point on Texas, if teams like Tulane and JMU,
[1:06:15] Speaker 2: if they're so lowly, yeah, if there's so much less then, if.
[1:06:20] Speaker 1: Their path is so much less impressive, yeah.
[1:06:22] Speaker 2: If there's so much less then and if it isn't fair.
[1:06:27] Speaker 2: Power five teams should not be able to count those wins.
[1:06:30] Speaker 1: I agree, they shouldn't be able to count them. I
[1:06:33] Speaker 1: haven't heard that take.
[1:06:34] Speaker 2: I'm waiting for the takes and the plans, and I'm
[1:06:37] Speaker 2: waiting for the fully fleshed out idea here to back
[1:06:40] Speaker 2: up all of these claims.
[1:06:41] Speaker 1: I haven't heard it. I don't know. If they're not
[1:06:43] Speaker 1: playing playoff worthy conferences, they shouldn't count as playoff worthy wins.
[1:06:47] Speaker 1: Where you agree where yet I didn't hear it. It
[1:06:51] Speaker 1: gets quieter, which, by the way, like what constitutes a
[1:06:56] Speaker 1: power four team, it just changes that the whims of
[1:07:00] Speaker 1: like three guys, Stanford's a Power four team, Well, they
[1:07:04] Speaker 1: were a Power conference team before. What I'm saying is
[1:07:06] Speaker 1: like Cincinnati was until it was decided they weren't, and
[1:07:10] Speaker 1: then it was decided they were again, And like Louisville
[1:07:15] Speaker 1: wasn't but then they were, and then they weren't again,
[1:07:17] Speaker 1: and then they were again. Like the Power four is
[1:07:22] Speaker 1: happy not only to eat the G six, they're happy
[1:07:25] Speaker 1: to eat their own. The PAC twelve does not exist
[1:07:27] Speaker 1: in any sort of meaningful similar way to where it
[1:07:30] Speaker 1: was before. Right like the SEC tried its best to
[1:07:34] Speaker 1: kill the Big twelve, and so I just think people are, like,
[1:07:40] Speaker 1: I think they're very shortsighted that if they're trying to
[1:07:43] Speaker 1: like give as few teams oxygen as possible, and they
[1:07:47] Speaker 1: think that's gonna be good for the sport, it's gonna
[1:07:50] Speaker 1: sort of take away football fans from the like we're
[1:07:54] Speaker 1: trying to make college football really exciting as a business.
[1:07:58] Speaker 2: I think it's I think it's a brain dead take,
[1:08:00] Speaker 2: is what I think. Yeah, and I understand, Listen, you
[1:08:03] Speaker 2: have your right to believe it if that's how you feel.
[1:08:05] Speaker 2: I don't feel that way. I think it's a brain
[1:08:07] Speaker 2: dead take personally.
[1:08:09] Speaker 1: I mean, it really does come back to, like, well,
[1:08:11] Speaker 1: who's going to want to watch James Madison? Like, that's
[1:08:13] Speaker 1: not my problem. It's just not my problem.
[1:08:16] Speaker 2: Look at the bull ratings last year, Dan, the bulls
[1:08:17] Speaker 2: don't mean anything. They literally mean nothing. I mean my
[1:08:22] Speaker 2: previous years. Did you look at ESPN's ratings last year
[1:08:25] Speaker 2: for Bowl Week? They were way the hell up, way up.
[1:08:28] Speaker 2: And those games don't mean a lick of course. So
[1:08:30] Speaker 2: don't tell me no one's gonna watch I'm sure relative
[1:08:33] Speaker 2: to like Alabama, Oklahoma or Miami Texas a and m
[1:08:38] Speaker 2: the ratings for Oregon JMU or this game that we're
[1:08:41] Speaker 2: going to talk about here too, lene O, Miss, I'm
[1:08:43] Speaker 2: sure comparatively speaking they will be lower.
[1:08:46] Speaker 1: I do not care. I do not live in the
[1:08:48] Speaker 1: world of ratings.
[1:08:49] Speaker 2: I also do not live in the world where whatever
[1:08:52] Speaker 2: Vegas says is the point spread should be taken as gospel.
[1:08:56] Speaker 1: It is a data point.
[1:08:58] Speaker 2: It does not mean that I can have fun watching
[1:09:00] Speaker 2: a game if one team is favored by seventeen and
[1:09:03] Speaker 2: a half points.
[1:09:05] Speaker 1: It's for people that are proficient in excel, is what
[1:09:07] Speaker 1: you're saying, all right, It's it really like the country
[1:09:13] Speaker 1: club of it all never becomes more obvious around now
[1:09:17] Speaker 1: when they're like, well, they don't deserve to be in
[1:09:20] Speaker 1: here with us. They haven't earned their way into these
[1:09:24] Speaker 1: pearly gates.
[1:09:25] Speaker 2: I've heard so many people with this take, and it
[1:09:28] Speaker 2: drives me crazy. And it's not about the people who
[1:09:30] Speaker 2: have the take. It's about the idea.
[1:09:32] Speaker 1: He's wearing a Costco Polo shirt tie. He can't be
[1:09:37] Speaker 1: in our country club invitation. By the way, Kirkland Signature
[1:09:40] Speaker 1: not a sponsor. Make a hell of a polo a
[1:09:43] Speaker 1: hell of a winner jacket? Have you gone full Kirkla
[1:09:45] Speaker 1: now that you're living the dead my whole I'm wearing.
[1:09:48] Speaker 1: I'm wearing an SEC shirt right now. To be clear,
[1:09:50] Speaker 1: Frank Thomas playing for Auburn. Yeah, you're watching on YouTube
[1:09:53] Speaker 1: dot com Slash Solidary hurt Yeah, big her of course, Alzheimer.
[1:09:57] Speaker 1: But the full war Drobe is not Kirkland signature, but
[1:10:01] Speaker 1: it can be for a price. We all have our price, Kirklets.
[1:10:05] Speaker 1: It's good stuff. Man. I don't think I have a
[1:10:07] Speaker 1: price for the SEC. But otherwise, yeah, one of my
[1:10:12] Speaker 1: winter jackets. It's great.
[1:10:14] Speaker 2: Very story line for this game is Lane Kiffin. Okay,
[1:10:19] Speaker 2: back to the game. Lane Kiffin up and left. Ole
[1:10:23] Speaker 2: Miss has a home game. Maybe they'll go on a
[1:10:25] Speaker 2: playoff run.
[1:10:26] Speaker 1: I don't know.
[1:10:26] Speaker 2: The coordinators are still there, so Pete Golding was elevated
[1:10:30] Speaker 2: from defensive coordinator to full time head coach. Charlie Weis
[1:10:34] Speaker 2: Junior is going to be going with Lane Kiffin. L
[1:10:37] Speaker 2: see you, but he came back. He's going to be
[1:10:39] Speaker 2: coaching the rest of the way here for the ReBs.
[1:10:43] Speaker 2: How much of a factor do you think that plays?
[1:10:45] Speaker 1: No Lane A good amount. Lane Kiffin is a very
[1:10:50] Speaker 1: aggressive in game manager with regard to fourth downs and
[1:10:54] Speaker 1: how he calls the game. Not to say, Charlie weis junior,
[1:10:57] Speaker 1: isn't a big part of the game planning and big
[1:10:58] Speaker 1: part of those in game decision and doesn't have access
[1:11:01] Speaker 1: to the same metrics lane Kiffin has access to, and
[1:11:04] Speaker 1: you know, the same analytics cards whatever, or probability cards,
[1:11:07] Speaker 1: whatever they are. But it does feel very much like
[1:11:10] Speaker 1: Ole miss these past few years has been very reflective
[1:11:14] Speaker 1: of Lane Kiffin's personality and appetite for aggression. So without
[1:11:22] Speaker 1: Lane there, I just don't know that we're seeing this
[1:11:24] Speaker 1: team coached with the same degree of confidence that Also
[1:11:28] Speaker 1: Pete Golding has been dealing with becoming a first time
[1:11:32] Speaker 1: SEC head coach on the fly. Can I say something
[1:11:35] Speaker 1: about that, please, At the risk of making myself sound
[1:11:38] Speaker 1: like an idiot and people out there clowning, We're far
[1:11:41] Speaker 1: too late for that, the two of them. We're far
[1:11:43] Speaker 1: too late for that. Yeah.
[1:11:46] Speaker 2: Did you happen to see Pete Golding's like opening message
[1:11:51] Speaker 2: to his team when they first announced that he was
[1:11:53] Speaker 2: going to be the head coach? He did, like, you know,
[1:11:56] Speaker 2: the team meeting. You stood there before the team and
[1:11:58] Speaker 2: kind of gave a few remarks so you happen to see.
[1:12:00] Speaker 1: That I did.
[1:12:03] Speaker 2: I was detecting zero swagger.
[1:12:08] Speaker 1: That's what I got a lot of my first dates
[1:12:10] Speaker 1: in New York. Same. Absolutely.
[1:12:12] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not saying that that's going to have a
[1:12:15] Speaker 2: huge impact in this game. I think that's going a
[1:12:17] Speaker 2: little too far afield, but moving forward, I.
[1:12:21] Speaker 1: Just something to be mindful of.
[1:12:23] Speaker 2: And it was just it was a few minutes worth,
[1:12:26] Speaker 2: And that's probably being tremendously unfair to Peak Golding, who's
[1:12:29] Speaker 2: done a good job and you know, as much as
[1:12:33] Speaker 2: you can earn that job. So I'm not but I'm
[1:12:37] Speaker 2: just watching this and I'm thinking, I don't know how
[1:12:41] Speaker 2: this is going to play long term.
[1:12:43] Speaker 1: It didn't do it for me. I'm not a player.
[1:12:46] Speaker 2: He's obviously been very good at what he does. But anyway,
[1:12:50] Speaker 2: I'll put that inside.
[1:12:51] Speaker 1: He's got to beat a team Ole Miss was already
[1:12:54] Speaker 1: thirty five points better than so he has to be
[1:13:00] Speaker 1: decent to win this game. He has to just kind
[1:13:03] Speaker 1: of not screw it. I don't even think he needs
[1:13:05] Speaker 1: to be decent, like they have to be one point
[1:13:08] Speaker 1: better than Tulane, who doesn't do I mean, we haven't
[1:13:11] Speaker 1: really talked about the matchup itself, but obviously ole Miss
[1:13:13] Speaker 1: has thrown the ball super well. With Trinidad Chambliss, he won,
[1:13:16] Speaker 1: Lacey has had some huge games on the ground. They've
[1:13:17] Speaker 1: shown a ton of balance on offense. You can run
[1:13:20] Speaker 1: the ball a little bit on ole Miss, but the
[1:13:21] Speaker 1: defense did improve over the course of the season, and
[1:13:24] Speaker 1: I just don't think Tulane does anything specifically well enough.
[1:13:28] Speaker 1: They overwhelmed North Texas upfront with their own pass rush,
[1:13:31] Speaker 1: and that game was like a weird back and forth
[1:13:33] Speaker 1: with weird calls. I just think, if you are going
[1:13:36] Speaker 1: to pull an upset like this, even if they hadn't played,
[1:13:39] Speaker 1: I would love to know what or I'd love to
[1:13:41] Speaker 1: feel confident in a specific thing that Tulane will rally
[1:13:44] Speaker 1: behind to win this game and they can throw the ball.
[1:13:48] Speaker 1: Some running has been a challenge. Defense has been sort
[1:13:51] Speaker 1: of all over the place up and down this year.
[1:13:52] Speaker 1: They finished the season strong, but I just think there's
[1:13:56] Speaker 1: too much speed, there's too much talent on ole Miss,
[1:13:58] Speaker 1: and I think they win this game a couple touchdowns.
[1:14:00] Speaker 2: I said this a few weeks ago. Tulane's offense looks
[1:14:03] Speaker 2: a lot to me like the Aaron Roderick offense at
[1:14:06] Speaker 2: Byu where it's not really yeah, it's not really one thing.
[1:14:11] Speaker 2: It's just sort of whatever it needs to be to win,
[1:14:14] Speaker 2: which I'm not necessarily against.
[1:14:16] Speaker 1: And also they're losing their coach to be Claire and
[1:14:18] Speaker 1: they lose their coach.
[1:14:19] Speaker 2: But like I'm not fundamentally against being a shape shifting
[1:14:23] Speaker 2: kind of offense. It can be a bare game plan
[1:14:26] Speaker 2: against that, and Byu has done that to great effect
[1:14:28] Speaker 2: over the year. Is why Colone's talking. You got a
[1:14:30] Speaker 2: huge raise and they're thrilled to keep him. I mean,
[1:14:32] Speaker 2: he does that, he's very good at it. My problem
[1:14:36] Speaker 2: with this matchup is it's all dependent on Jake Rhetz
[1:14:38] Speaker 2: left and if all Miss takes him away, it's over.
[1:14:43] Speaker 2: That's exactly what happened the first time. He started the
[1:14:45] Speaker 2: game zero for nine. He finished five for seventeen with
[1:14:48] Speaker 2: fifty six yards passing. I think he ran for fifty
[1:14:51] Speaker 2: some odd yards. He was their main weapon on offense,
[1:14:53] Speaker 2: but it just wasn't enough to get them anywhere close
[1:14:56] Speaker 2: anywhere to the same ballpark as all Miss. It was
[1:15:00] Speaker 2: twenty three to three at halftime, it was a scoreless
[1:15:03] Speaker 2: third quarter, and then Ole Miss ran away and hid right.
[1:15:07] Speaker 2: I think Ole miss is going to come out with
[1:15:08] Speaker 2: the chip on their shoulder after Lane abandoned him.
[1:15:11] Speaker 1: I really do.
[1:15:12] Speaker 2: And regardless of what I think of Pete Golden Golden,
[1:15:15] Speaker 2: I I think they're gonna win this one going away.
[1:15:19] Speaker 2: I don't think it's as lopsided as the first time around.
[1:15:22] Speaker 2: It wouldn't surprise me if there is a bit of
[1:15:25] Speaker 2: hiccups here now with a new head coach stepping in
[1:15:28] Speaker 2: getting the big boy chair, and there's going to be
[1:15:30] Speaker 2: a little.
[1:15:31] Speaker 1: Bit of a feeling out period in this game.
[1:15:32] Speaker 2: But I don't have a really good reason to go
[1:15:34] Speaker 2: with Tulane, be it with the points or outright.
[1:15:37] Speaker 1: They did play more recently, right, so there is the
[1:15:41] Speaker 1: like rust factor with almost obviously, but they're not as good.
[1:15:44] Speaker 2: They're not as good, They're not as good, they're not
[1:15:46] Speaker 2: as talented. I've got it at thirty seven to seventeen.
[1:15:50] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I said, yeah, thirty one seventeen, thirty
[1:15:53] Speaker 1: one eighteen, something like that. I think it's double digits,
[1:15:55] Speaker 1: but not as pronounced. I just think there are going
[1:15:57] Speaker 1: to be some growing pains for not in this one.
[1:16:01] Speaker 1: But you could see them falling down ten nothing. Who
[1:16:03] Speaker 1: they have Georgia if they win this game, they fall
[1:16:06] Speaker 1: down ten nothing and then just like they're all over
[1:16:08] Speaker 1: the place and they're having to call timeouts that they
[1:16:10] Speaker 1: shouldn't be calling because of procedural stuff and getting lined
[1:16:14] Speaker 1: up and nobody knows what they're doing on fourth and
[1:16:16] Speaker 1: two and taking too much time. And I don't think
[1:16:19] Speaker 1: that's going to happen against Tulane now. But here we are.
[1:16:22] Speaker 2: If you're an All Miss fan and if you're just
[1:16:25] Speaker 2: sort of digesting everything that transpired over the last month
[1:16:29] Speaker 2: with your coach leaving and all that hullabaloo around it,
[1:16:33] Speaker 2: having a first round playoff game against Tulane is actually
[1:16:36] Speaker 2: a nice little runway for your new coaching staff.
[1:16:39] Speaker 1: It's actually a nice litt runway.
[1:16:40] Speaker 2: Get used to the playoff setting, get the swing of
[1:16:43] Speaker 2: it before you get to the big boys, or the
[1:16:45] Speaker 2: bigger boys. I should say, play Georgia next round if
[1:16:49] Speaker 2: you win. Yeah, seven point thirty TNT final college football
[1:16:56] Speaker 2: playoff game in the first round on this one's on
[1:16:58] Speaker 2: Saturday Night. Number twelve James Madison at a mark of
[1:17:02] Speaker 2: twelve and one. They won the Sun Belt. Number five
[1:17:05] Speaker 2: Oregon at a mark of eleven and one. They are
[1:17:08] Speaker 2: a twenty one and one half point favorite. That's a
[1:17:11] Speaker 2: big number. It's a lot of potatoes.
[1:17:14] Speaker 1: That's a lot of potatoes.
[1:17:16] Speaker 2: We got Bob with shoes in and Lewis Riddick on
[1:17:18] Speaker 2: the call of note. Here's sixty three percent of the bets.
[1:17:22] Speaker 2: Seventy four percent of the money is on Oregon at
[1:17:25] Speaker 2: time of recording. That is by far the most lopsided
[1:17:29] Speaker 2: game in the first round of college football playoff betting
[1:17:33] Speaker 2: from a betting standpoint, right, I'm curious to get your
[1:17:37] Speaker 2: take on this one. As a resident resident Oregon expert.
[1:17:43] Speaker 2: Let me say, I've been high on James Madison all
[1:17:45] Speaker 2: year because that defense, the defense to me is intriguing.
[1:17:52] Speaker 1: But let me kick it over to you. Where do
[1:17:53] Speaker 1: you come down on this one? My crazy take is
[1:17:57] Speaker 1: Oregon wins. I don't know about them. It's a big number,
[1:18:02] Speaker 1: and it's a big number against a team with a
[1:18:04] Speaker 1: good defense. You know, there's a limited sample size, obviously
[1:18:09] Speaker 1: with the teams that James Madison played, and that's I mean,
[1:18:14] Speaker 1: it's not an unreasonable take to look at James Madison's
[1:18:17] Speaker 1: schedule and sort of doubt not the veracity but the
[1:18:21] Speaker 1: meaning of like I think they finished with it, like
[1:18:24] Speaker 1: the number one success rate defense in America. They were
[1:18:27] Speaker 1: very even against the run. In the past, they stifled teams.
[1:18:29] Speaker 1: I don't think they've allowed more than twenty points since
[1:18:31] Speaker 1: like mid October something like that. Obviously slow start against
[1:18:35] Speaker 1: who they played, Troy, but eventually just sort of sat
[1:18:38] Speaker 1: on them. This is not an accidentally good defense. This
[1:18:42] Speaker 1: took a lot. There's talent on this defense. They played
[1:18:45] Speaker 1: discipline football. They don't get lost, They play well in
[1:18:48] Speaker 1: the red zone, they prevent big plays like they do
[1:18:50] Speaker 1: a lot of the things that very strong defenses should do,
[1:18:54] Speaker 1: and they do them excellently, so I don't think it's
[1:18:57] Speaker 1: smoking mirrors. At the same time, Oregon has had one
[1:19:02] Speaker 1: of the most lethal offenses in the country this year.
[1:19:06] Speaker 1: They're EPA is top ten. They run, they pass, They
[1:19:09] Speaker 1: have a very good quarterback in Dante More. It looks
[1:19:11] Speaker 1: like they're getting healthier at receiver. They might have the
[1:19:13] Speaker 1: best tight end in the country, one of the best
[1:19:15] Speaker 1: offensive lines in the country. I think if Oregon can
[1:19:18] Speaker 1: figure out what James Madison is doing in terms of
[1:19:22] Speaker 1: run defense, then it could get ugly quickly. That's where
[1:19:27] Speaker 1: we've seen it this year that even against teams like Iowa. Now,
[1:19:31] Speaker 1: they struggled against Washington, but it opened up a little
[1:19:33] Speaker 1: bit against USC Like, if they can figure out the
[1:19:36] Speaker 1: ground game, it could get pretty ugly. And I think
[1:19:40] Speaker 1: it's going to take a minute in this one, but
[1:19:42] Speaker 1: I think Oregon will And so I just there's like
[1:19:47] Speaker 1: a magic number that James Madison needs to keep Oregon
[1:19:49] Speaker 1: under twenty or something like that. And at home with
[1:19:52] Speaker 1: this crowd, this is the night game, right, night game,
[1:19:55] Speaker 1: seven thirty Eastern. Yeah, I just think you know, Oregon
[1:19:57] Speaker 1: hasn't played in a few weeks. They're gonna be excited.
[1:20:00] Speaker 1: It has him in the holidays, So I don't think
[1:20:01] Speaker 1: there's gonna be the rust that we saw last year.
[1:20:04] Speaker 1: I think Oregon's gonna come out and really look strong
[1:20:06] Speaker 1: in this one. And Alanza Barnett, for as exciting as
[1:20:10] Speaker 1: he's been as a quarterback, he's not been the most
[1:20:13] Speaker 1: consistent accurate passer. No, I don't think he did anything
[1:20:16] Speaker 1: against Troy through the air, right, He's had some down moments.
[1:20:20] Speaker 1: I just I think the Oregon defense is going to
[1:20:23] Speaker 1: be suffocating. I think they're going to figure things out
[1:20:25] Speaker 1: on the ground. I think we're going to see some
[1:20:27] Speaker 1: big plays from this Oregon offense, and I think we
[1:20:30] Speaker 1: see a bit of a crock potting. I have it
[1:20:32] Speaker 1: at like thirty five thirteen, so I guess that's barely
[1:20:34] Speaker 1: covering maybe THEE seven thirteen, thirty three ten, I don't know.
[1:20:38] Speaker 1: I think they went by like twenty two to twenty four.
[1:20:41] Speaker 1: I like James Madison. I'm glad James Madison made this. Yeah,
[1:20:44] Speaker 1: and their defense is really interesting to me. As he said,
[1:20:49] Speaker 1: overall top success rate against they've been very very solid,
[1:20:54] Speaker 1: even against both the run in the past. I think
[1:20:56] Speaker 1: they're technically second against both the run in the past,
[1:20:59] Speaker 1: but when you run all the numbers, it comes to first. Nationally,
[1:21:02] Speaker 1: they're very pretty good, very very good. My concern about
[1:21:05] Speaker 1: the defense though, is that there is a tendency to
[1:21:08] Speaker 1: give up big plays and against an Oregon offense that
[1:21:12] Speaker 1: creates a big gainer of twenty or more yards about
[1:21:15] Speaker 1: ten percent of the time. That's an issue. That's number
[1:21:17] Speaker 1: one in the country right number one in the country.
[1:21:19] Speaker 1: More often than any other team, they're creating twenty yard
[1:21:22] Speaker 1: plus plays.
[1:21:22] Speaker 2: That's a problem for James Madison. My biggest issue with
[1:21:26] Speaker 2: JMU though, is that I've watched every single game, every
[1:21:31] Speaker 2: single game this season. I watched it the first time through,
[1:21:34] Speaker 2: I went back and I watched a couple games again
[1:21:36] Speaker 2: before putting this together. Yeah, they're not good enough to
[1:21:40] Speaker 2: keep paced with the Oregon that's the issue. I watched
[1:21:44] Speaker 2: that Sun Belt Championship game against Troy. They did not
[1:21:46] Speaker 2: look like a playoff team in that game. Their defense
[1:21:48] Speaker 2: was solid. Their defense rose to the occasion because their
[1:21:52] Speaker 2: offense put them in some bad spots. So I still
[1:21:54] Speaker 2: like the defense a great deal. All the runs back offensively,
[1:21:58] Speaker 2: though not where it needs to be. And so I
[1:22:03] Speaker 2: just wonder, even if the defense is stingy enough to
[1:22:05] Speaker 2: hold Oregon to like thirty points, are they going to
[1:22:12] Speaker 2: be good enough to play the physical brand of football
[1:22:15] Speaker 2: that they want to with Wayne Knight?
[1:22:16] Speaker 1: Oh, thank you? You know, the kind that Bob Chesney likes,
[1:22:20] Speaker 1: by the way, outgoing coach Bob ches right, Yeah, he's
[1:22:25] Speaker 1: he's on his way out in a good way for
[1:22:27] Speaker 1: him taking the UCLA job, and Oregon's losing both of
[1:22:30] Speaker 1: their coordinators Writstein and tash Lupoi. I'm just not sure.
[1:22:36] Speaker 2: How JMU scores the points that they're going to need
[1:22:38] Speaker 2: to score against Oregon, even if the defense is good
[1:22:40] Speaker 2: enough and to your point, I like Alonza Barnett. His
[1:22:44] Speaker 2: story coming back from an ACL tear late in the
[1:22:47] Speaker 2: year last year but not missing any action this year
[1:22:50] Speaker 2: has been awesome. He is a very very good quarterback.
[1:22:53] Speaker 2: He is not a good enough passer to truly challenge
[1:22:57] Speaker 2: the Oregon duck defense here. In fact, I'll go out
[1:23:00] Speaker 2: in a limb. There's going to be a mind boggling,
[1:23:03] Speaker 2: mind bogglingly bad interception at some point in this game, Okay,
[1:23:08] Speaker 2: a true folly floater that gets popped up over the
[1:23:11] Speaker 2: middle of the field and you just scratch your head afterwards.
[1:23:14] Speaker 2: That is what we are headed towards in this game.
[1:23:16] Speaker 1: Now.
[1:23:16] Speaker 2: Because I dislike Alonzo Barnett, I just think his receiving core,
[1:23:21] Speaker 2: especially his offensive line, is going to be overmatched.
[1:23:24] Speaker 1: I think that's reasonable.
[1:23:25] Speaker 2: Oregon is good enough to sell out to stop the
[1:23:27] Speaker 2: run and still stop the pass without having to over
[1:23:30] Speaker 2: commit one way or the other.
[1:23:32] Speaker 1: I've got it at thirty three fourteen, Oregan, Okay, so
[1:23:35] Speaker 1: that is quick math went to a state school, got
[1:23:38] Speaker 1: the fifty five of ten earlier, so that is nineteen
[1:23:41] Speaker 1: point nineteen points. So jam you covering? Yeah, okay, I'll
[1:23:45] Speaker 1: give you limit a couple of early possessions. I'll kick
[1:23:47] Speaker 1: with that, But there's a the uh oh god, what
[1:23:51] Speaker 1: was I going to say something about, Yeah, there's I
[1:23:55] Speaker 1: just don't trust that pop from the passing game. Like
[1:23:57] Speaker 1: you mentioned Oregon, the games that they have lost under
[1:23:59] Speaker 1: Dan Landing, by and large, right, it's Michael Panics games,
[1:24:02] Speaker 1: it's this year, the Heisman winning quarterback in Fernando Mendoza,
[1:24:05] Speaker 1: Ohio State's offense last year in the Bowl game. I
[1:24:08] Speaker 1: just I don't think it meets that bar So I'm
[1:24:10] Speaker 1: going ducks. There.
[1:24:12] Speaker 2: You have it right in saliverbo at gmail dot com.

[1:24:25] Speaker 2: and do our weekly recap?
[1:24:28] Speaker 1: Is that the deal? Yes, so we'll do the live
[1:24:31] Speaker 1: stream Saturday night. That'll be what eleven Central'll be midnight
[1:24:38] Speaker 1: if I mean, if you want to keep the same schedule,
[1:24:39] Speaker 1: that's fine. Sure, the organ game should be done by
[1:24:43] Speaker 1: what eleven PM? Hopefully, Yeah, we would assume that's what
[1:24:48] Speaker 1: a seven thirty Eastern start, so I could see that
[1:24:51] Speaker 1: being over by eleven before eleven, yeah, we could do
[1:24:55] Speaker 1: eleven thirty, okay, whatever. Well, because we're just going to
[1:24:58] Speaker 1: have fewer games to discuss, fewer games to discuss, we
[1:25:02] Speaker 1: will post that across all of our socials.

[1:25:18] Speaker 2: they're starting this one a little bit earlier.
[1:25:20] Speaker 1: We'll see how it goes. We do, by the way,
[1:25:23] Speaker 1: have FCS semis right, Oh we do. That's right, Illinois
[1:25:27] Speaker 1: State against Villanova. Yeah, so that's December twentieth, so that
[1:25:32] Speaker 1: would also be Saturday Saturday, and then a Brawl of
[1:25:37] Speaker 1: the Wild rematch the Montana schools. It's right, Montana, Montana State.
[1:25:41] Speaker 1: So we have zero Dakota presents in the FCS playoffs
[1:25:46] Speaker 1: and then they're playing the final in Nashville this year. Well,
[1:25:49] Speaker 1: all right, good teams, Illinois State, the pride of normal Illinois.
