Championship Week is here, and we're asking the important questions about all nine games on Friday and Saturday. Can BYU avenge an earlier loss to Texas Tech and rally behind their newly re-upped coach? Will Georgia snap a three-game losing streak against Alabama and earn a first round CFP bye? What's the formula for a five-loss Duke to worm its way into the playoff? How big is the gap between Ohio State and Indiana? With a playoff spot on the line, should we favor North Texas or Tulane? And James Madison is gonna try to score like 70 points, right? Plus, a look at the latest news as the coaching carousel continues to spin, with Will Stein taking the job at Kentucky, Collin Klein taking over at Kansas State, and Brian Hartline making the move to USF. And, naturally, Ty has a rant on Penn State's pursuit of Kalani Sitake and the state of Pat Kraft's coaching search. Finally, a look at the latest CFP rankings and the scenarios (and fuzzy math) that is most interesting heading into the final weekend. [0:02] Speaker 1: Welcome to the solid verbal hull. That for me, I'm
[0:06] Speaker 1: a man, I'm forty.
[0:08] Speaker 2: I've heard so many players say, well I want to
[0:10] Speaker 2: be happy.
[0:10] Speaker 1: You want to be happy for a day?
[0:12] Speaker 2: Edo State is that?
[0:13] Speaker 1: Whoo whoo and no Dan and tie Dan Robertstein Conference
[0:20] Speaker 1: Championship Week is here, my friend. I hate to interrupt
[0:26] Speaker 1: the conversation we were just having about your deep seated
[0:30] Speaker 1: desire to, at some point in life become a male carrier.
[0:33] Speaker 1: We can talk about that later, but it is to
[0:35] Speaker 1: be clear, a postal carrier, not somebody who carries men around.
[0:39] Speaker 1: Well yeah, yeah, yeah, okay. Well the way you you
[0:42] Speaker 1: emphasize you want to be a male carrier, you just
[0:46] Speaker 1: didn't hit it right. And that's okay.
[0:47] Speaker 2: But I do daydream about delivering mail in San Diego
[0:50] Speaker 2: and just playing tennis and enjoying a cool Pacific breeze.
[0:54] Speaker 1: On that weird note. Welcome back one and all. I
[0:57] Speaker 1: am ty he is Dan. This is a soliverbal Thank
[0:59] Speaker 1: you again for downloading, for listening, for supporting what we
[1:02] Speaker 1: do for Ballers dot com is where you can go
[1:04] Speaker 1: if you want to sign up and support us even further.
[1:07] Speaker 1: We do have a game this weekend I will talk
[1:10] Speaker 1: about run the Board, the abbreviated version of Run the
[1:14] Speaker 1: Board this weekend for the Saturday games. We'll get to that,
[1:17] Speaker 1: I promise, because we've got a bunch of games to preview.
[1:20] Speaker 1: All in all, we have nine games this weekend. We've
[1:24] Speaker 1: got four on Friday, We've got five on Saturday. All told,
[1:28] Speaker 1: six rematches of those nine. We're going to do our
[1:32] Speaker 1: part to try and break down as many of those
[1:34] Speaker 1: as we can over the next hour or so. We
[1:37] Speaker 1: also have some news both on the coaching as well
[1:41] Speaker 1: as the playoff front. We're going to do our best
[1:43] Speaker 1: to get through as much of that as we can.
[1:45] Speaker 1: We are recording this, I should add on early signing Day,
[1:50] Speaker 1: and you know our drill around here, Dan, we don't
[1:54] Speaker 1: typically do a show recapping early signing Day without our
[1:57] Speaker 1: good friend Brandon Hoffman. True, So when the time is right,
[2:02] Speaker 1: maybe next week, when things settle down a little bit here,
[2:05] Speaker 1: once we know who officially is going where and how
[2:08] Speaker 1: many guys have officially decommitted from Penn State. At that
[2:12] Speaker 1: point in time, we will bring Brandon on the line
[2:15] Speaker 1: and we'll get the full recap to get everybody plugged in.
[2:18] Speaker 1: But we're not there quite yet.
[2:20] Speaker 2: And there's still some outstanding, you know, commitments because of
[2:24] Speaker 2: coaching changes, notably like Lane Kiffen and LSU's class. There's
[2:28] Speaker 2: a few guys who are committed but are wait and see,
[2:30] Speaker 2: and I assume are probably going to wait until a
[2:33] Speaker 2: little bit later down the line. Chris Henry Jr. Which is,
[2:37] Speaker 2: you know, the jewel of the receiving class, had sort
[2:40] Speaker 2: of announced years ago, I think at this point for
[2:42] Speaker 2: Ohio State. But Brian Hartline left this morning for USF
[2:46] Speaker 2: and so now as of the time of recording, his
[2:48] Speaker 2: letter of intent is not signed and he's weighing options,
[2:51] Speaker 2: and so you know, there's a lot of there was
[2:53] Speaker 2: like BYU, trepidation with the idea of Kilani Sataki potentially
[2:57] Speaker 2: going to Penn State. Penn State, honestly, they'll take anybody
[3:01] Speaker 2: anny application.
[3:02] Speaker 1: Fine thunder. I didn't play the sound yet. I got
[3:04] Speaker 1: stuff to say about that.
[3:05] Speaker 2: I'm just saying it's all affecting early signing days. So
[3:08] Speaker 2: I'm trying to round out your thought and I'll see
[3:11] Speaker 2: the floor to you. But yes, there's a lot going on.
[3:14] Speaker 2: It's a fascinating quarterback class. We will get to all
[3:17] Speaker 2: of it with Brandon, I.
[3:18] Speaker 1: Promise we will indeed, all right, without further ado, the
[3:23] Speaker 1: coaching come. You know what the roar means of that
[3:29] Speaker 1: imaginary dinosaur, Dan Rubinstein. We got more coaching news to
[3:33] Speaker 1: report on here. Yes, on the show, you're losing your
[3:37] Speaker 1: offensive coordinator. Out there, your Oregon Ducks are seeing Will
[3:42] Speaker 1: Stein become the new head football coach at Kentucky. That
[3:45] Speaker 1: happened very quickly, shortly after they let go of Mark Stoops.
[3:49] Speaker 1: I'm not even sure we reported the Mark Stoops thing
[3:51] Speaker 1: on this show because it happened so quick. But they
[3:54] Speaker 1: get rid of Mark Stoops, not a great surprise to
[3:56] Speaker 1: anybody who follows this beat. They quickly moved to Will
[4:00] Speaker 1: Stein from Oregon. As you mentioned a little bit earlier,
[4:04] Speaker 1: we did have Brian Hartline, currently the wide receivers coach
[4:08] Speaker 1: offensive coordinator at Ohio State, decide that he is going
[4:12] Speaker 1: to take a very desirable USF job. I might agree.
[4:15] Speaker 1: They are putting a ton of resources into that position,
[4:18] Speaker 1: recently vacated by Alex Golesh who took his talents to Auburn.
[4:22] Speaker 1: Brian Hartline going to take his crack at being a
[4:25] Speaker 1: head football coach, and I guess the news that I
[4:30] Speaker 1: wanted to talk more about was exactly what you brought
[4:33] Speaker 1: up a second ago.
[4:33] Speaker 2: We hold on, there was another big one though, before
[4:35] Speaker 2: this one, before you conclude with Penn State, which, by
[4:38] Speaker 2: the way, concluding with Penn State is still an open
[4:42] Speaker 2: ended thought because nothing has concluded with Penn State.
[4:45] Speaker 1: I have no idea.
[4:46] Speaker 2: No, it was reported that Chris cleman is retiring and
[4:49] Speaker 2: Colin Klein swoop not swooping in obviously, that's like the
[4:52] Speaker 2: home call Colin Klein, the Texas A and M offensive coordinator,
[4:56] Speaker 2: recent Kansas State offensive coordinator returning to the little app Manhattan, Kansas.
[5:02] Speaker 2: I don't know if everything is officially official, but that's
[5:07] Speaker 2: the presumed order of operations here. And that's like Chris Cleimban,
[5:12] Speaker 2: you know, it seems like behind the scenes has been
[5:14] Speaker 2: through a lot and has sort of like again, I'm
[5:17] Speaker 2: not going to speak for him because I'm sure what
[5:20] Speaker 2: he is going to elaborate on is much more specific
[5:23] Speaker 2: than I can, but there it seems like he has
[5:27] Speaker 2: been fried a little bit and how could you not
[5:29] Speaker 2: buy this profession? And he is off to retirement. So
[5:34] Speaker 2: we wish him the best in the Kansas State program.
[5:36] Speaker 2: The best and you know, help to deliver Kansas State
[5:38] Speaker 2: a couple of years ago, if you remember, during the
[5:40] Speaker 2: Gilded TCU season of twenty two, is that right, Yeah,
[5:45] Speaker 2: it's all lost on me. Deliver them a Big twelve
[5:47] Speaker 2: title and a spot in the New Year six Bowl
[5:50] Speaker 2: Game against Bama. So not a long career by Kansas
[5:53] Speaker 2: State standards, but I think a largely successful one and
[5:56] Speaker 2: an entertaining one if nothing else.
[5:58] Speaker 1: So we wish him the best. Yeah, And there had
[6:00] Speaker 1: been rumors, I think for a few years running now
[6:02] Speaker 1: that at some point Climate might decide to walk away
[6:06] Speaker 1: from Kase State. So when I saw that news didn't
[6:08] Speaker 1: really come as a huge surprise to me. And it
[6:11] Speaker 1: comes as even less of a surprise that they would
[6:13] Speaker 1: turn it over to Colin klein Right as you said,
[6:15] Speaker 1: it's like the easiest promotion ever. Everybody at KY State
[6:19] Speaker 1: knows Colin Kleine. I think he's bying large been a
[6:22] Speaker 1: pretty successful coordinator, right, So yeah, to kind of give
[6:25] Speaker 1: him the reins, that'll be a nice transition for them.
[6:29] Speaker 2: Also saw by the way Neil Brown taking over at
[6:31] Speaker 2: North Texas. Yeah, Neil Brown obviously relieved of duties at
[6:35] Speaker 2: West Virginia last season, but had a very strong run
[6:39] Speaker 2: at Troy and North Texas in terms of geography and
[6:42] Speaker 2: now recent success has to be viewed as a relatively
[6:46] Speaker 2: strong job, especially in an American that is very strong.
[6:50] Speaker 2: That North Texas is performing like it is right now
[6:52] Speaker 2: and playing for the conference championship here this weekend, so
[6:56] Speaker 2: hopefully a good hire for the Mean Green and for
[6:58] Speaker 2: Neil Brown.
[7:00] Speaker 1: Penn State made a run at Kilani Sataki. Yeah, we
[7:05] Speaker 1: brought this up a little bit on the last episode
[7:07] Speaker 1: of the podcast. At the time that we recorded, it
[7:10] Speaker 1: was really just rumors and speculation. I think I told you,
[7:14] Speaker 1: I think I told overballer Hood that I was on
[7:16] Speaker 1: board with that stuff. It seemed to me like, at
[7:18] Speaker 1: least based on some of the stuff I heard that. Yeah,
[7:20] Speaker 1: there was some actual smoke to that, and indeed there
[7:23] Speaker 1: was a lots blown up since we last recorded day
[7:26] Speaker 1: and we last recorded on Monday morning. Monday night is
[7:30] Speaker 1: when kind of everything went haywire. Now we're recording this
[7:34] Speaker 1: on Wednesday morning, Wednesday midday, I guess Eastern time, and
[7:40] Speaker 1: Penn State is still without a head football coach. Klanie
[7:43] Speaker 1: Sataki has opted to stay at BYU. It was a
[7:47] Speaker 1: very frenetic forty eight hours. Yeah, will he stay? Will
[7:51] Speaker 1: he go? We had folks from all across the BYU
[7:54] Speaker 1: community swooping in, pitching and doing whatever they could to
[7:57] Speaker 1: try and keep Kalani Sataki in provo, and it seems
[8:01] Speaker 1: as though those efforts have worked. Man, it sounds as
[8:05] Speaker 1: if there was something of a handshake agreement in place
[8:09] Speaker 1: for a bit between Penn State and Kalani Sataki. Whether
[8:13] Speaker 1: he got cold feet, had second thoughts, this was part
[8:17] Speaker 1: of the plan all along. You know, I can't put
[8:19] Speaker 1: myself in his head, but Kalani Sataki going to be
[8:23] Speaker 1: staying put at BYU. This has been widely celebrated around
[8:26] Speaker 1: the BYU community. They love Kalanie Sataki. As I think
[8:30] Speaker 1: I said on the last episode, he's sort of like
[8:31] Speaker 1: this larger than life character. He is revered by the
[8:35] Speaker 1: BYU faithful. I feel happy for them that they were
[8:38] Speaker 1: able to retain Kalani Sataki because, and this is no
[8:41] Speaker 1: secret that people have listened to this show for a while.
[8:43] Speaker 1: I've had a hard time figuring him out. But the
[8:45] Speaker 1: one thing that has never really been in doubt about
[8:47] Speaker 1: him as a person is that across the board, everybody
[8:50] Speaker 1: says he's a great guy across the board, as players
[8:53] Speaker 1: love him, as I said, very revered within that community.
[8:56] Speaker 1: So at least from a BYU standpoint, this is a
[9:00] Speaker 1: a pretty big show of might. You know, whether or
[9:02] Speaker 1: not it was something that required the community to pitch
[9:05] Speaker 1: in and keep them there, that's kind of beside the point.
[9:07] Speaker 1: But the fact that they get to keep him, I
[9:09] Speaker 1: think is a success story for BYU and certainly for
[9:12] Speaker 1: the Big Twelve, right because the Big Twelve finds itself
[9:15] Speaker 1: all too often on the outside looking in with some
[9:17] Speaker 1: of these playoff discussions and just general conference power rankings
[9:22] Speaker 1: and that type of thing. To retain a coach that
[9:25] Speaker 1: is very much apparently in demand, that's a good thing
[9:28] Speaker 1: for them, So I commend BYU for making that happen.
[9:31] Speaker 2: Yeah, and BYU has shown itself to be aggressive, not
[9:35] Speaker 2: Texas Tech aggressive within the Big Twelve, but looking like
[9:37] Speaker 2: the second most aggressive team in terms of spending. Even
[9:40] Speaker 2: though Kalani Sataki, I think, prior to this flirtation with
[9:43] Speaker 2: Penn State wasn't terribly high paid for being a playoff
[9:48] Speaker 2: ish program head coach. So he's getting a raise, and
[9:52] Speaker 2: you're right, BYU seemed to rally behind the scenes. I
[9:54] Speaker 2: lost a lot of stories about I don't know if
[9:56] Speaker 2: I've ever actually had Crumble cookies me neither. I think
[10:00] Speaker 2: they're like a kid's cookie company of some kind. Said,
[10:04] Speaker 2: I've seen them, I've driven by them. But apparently their
[10:07] Speaker 2: founder is a BYU booster of some kind, and he
[10:11] Speaker 2: is credited with at least being one of the people
[10:13] Speaker 2: who stepped up two to make deposits into the Kilani
[10:17] Speaker 2: Sataki piggybank. That sounded weirder than I intended. And good
[10:23] Speaker 2: for BYU, right, good for the good for that program.
[10:26] Speaker 2: And Penn State is running an extremely unsuccessful, unprofessional administration
[10:35] Speaker 2: with regard to finding the most important person in terms
[10:40] Speaker 2: of generating campus revenue. Uh okay, guys, So Brian Kelly,
[10:51] Speaker 2: I am wearing my.
[10:51] Speaker 1: Penn State sweatshirt and solidarity here. Yeah, with the millions
[10:56] Speaker 1: of people listening at home, Penn State fans allow and
[11:02] Speaker 1: indulge me for a second here to do a little
[11:04] Speaker 1: bit of a tyrant.
[11:06] Speaker 2: Tyrant, So it's you. You're not a tyrant. I mean
[11:10] Speaker 2: I could be.
[11:10] Speaker 1: I don't know. It depends how this goes over. Yeah,
[11:13] Speaker 1: so I don't know. Pat Kraft, the athletic director at
[11:16] Speaker 1: Penn State never met the guy. I thought the press
[11:19] Speaker 1: or that he gave after they fired James Franklin was
[11:23] Speaker 1: pitch perfect. Whatever you think of how they got rid
[11:27] Speaker 1: of Franklin, the press or that he gave to fire
[11:31] Speaker 1: up the fan base right after they made the decision,
[11:33] Speaker 1: I thought he did a really good job with that.
[11:35] Speaker 1: I was fired up after that. And furthermore, again, this
[11:40] Speaker 1: is not a James Franken conversation anymore. But I don't
[11:42] Speaker 1: think he was wrong. I don't think Penn Staters is
[11:46] Speaker 1: a fan base were wrong to want something of a
[11:49] Speaker 1: change of scenery. It did feel like to an extent
[11:51] Speaker 1: the relationship with Franklin had maxed out. Doesn't mean he's
[11:54] Speaker 1: not a good coach. I think if people had a
[11:58] Speaker 1: second chance at it, maybe they would they would undo
[12:01] Speaker 1: that decision now, given what we know about this coaching search,
[12:03] Speaker 1: but I understand at least that thought process, and I
[12:07] Speaker 1: was fired up after that press conference.
[12:09] Speaker 2: I think maybe they would think twice about hiring Pat
[12:11] Speaker 2: Craft more so than getting rid of James Franklin. But yes,
[12:15] Speaker 2: I can tell you that at the same time, at
[12:19] Speaker 2: the same time that press conference was going on, I
[12:23] Speaker 2: had a couple threads going with people that know pat Craft,
[12:27] Speaker 2: that have worked with pat Craft in some capacity, and
[12:30] Speaker 2: none of them, Dan, not a single one of them
[12:33] Speaker 2: trusted pat Craft with this hire, right, which to me
[12:37] Speaker 2: was a bit of a red flag.
[12:38] Speaker 1: AGA And I don't know the guy. So when I
[12:40] Speaker 1: came on this show what feels like an eternity ago,
[12:44] Speaker 1: I guess it was fifty some odd days ago, and
[12:46] Speaker 1: we talked about where they might go with this hire.
[12:49] Speaker 1: And when I said, Matt Ruhle and I talked that
[12:51] Speaker 1: up as a possibility, and I got a lot of
[12:53] Speaker 1: you're crazy, I got a lot of that doesn't make sense, guys.
[12:58] Speaker 1: I was with you on okay, but I'm telling you
[13:02] Speaker 1: I was cautioned that it might not make sense given
[13:06] Speaker 1: the trigger man here. That was my starting point in
[13:10] Speaker 1: trying to evaluate where Penn State was going to go next.
[13:14] Speaker 1: In fairness to him, I think at this point it
[13:18] Speaker 1: would probably still be premature to say that pack Craft
[13:22] Speaker 1: is screwed up the higher because we still don't know
[13:24] Speaker 1: who is hired right. All we can confidently say is
[13:28] Speaker 1: that he is very much screwed up the hiring process.
[13:31] Speaker 1: This is not up for debate. We can debate whether
[13:34] Speaker 1: or not the Matt rule thing was real, or if
[13:36] Speaker 1: it made sense or whatever. But I think it's pretty
[13:39] Speaker 1: clear at this point that pack Craft went on a
[13:42] Speaker 1: wild goose chase. He tried to chase down the biggest
[13:46] Speaker 1: names in the coaching industry. Many of them were happy
[13:50] Speaker 1: to listen and even happier to get a raise as
[13:52] Speaker 1: a result of it. That is where this search has
[13:56] Speaker 1: really excelled, getting other people raises. I do not believe
[14:01] Speaker 1: for a second the rumor that there was some sort
[14:04] Speaker 1: of collusion against Penn State orchestrated by Jimmy Sexton the Superage.
[14:09] Speaker 1: I don't buy that. That is not how the industry works.
[14:12] Speaker 1: It just isn't right. But it very much to me
[14:15] Speaker 1: feels like this was a coaching search driven more by
[14:20] Speaker 1: the fan fiction side of the fan base and the
[14:23] Speaker 1: names that would light up message boards as opposed to
[14:27] Speaker 1: being realistic and having a real plan. It feels the
[14:31] Speaker 1: deeper we get into this thing, Dan that this was
[14:34] Speaker 1: a coaching search based more on assumption. Assumption that if
[14:38] Speaker 1: you talk to enough big names, surely one of them
[14:41] Speaker 1: will want to come here because we are Penn State. Yeah,
[14:45] Speaker 1: and that just hasn't happened now. So the deal with
[14:47] Speaker 1: Satake that listen. I don't know how long that had
[14:51] Speaker 1: been in the works. I heard anything from a couple
[14:53] Speaker 1: of days to a couple weeks. But regardless, it's not
[14:58] Speaker 1: something that just popped up on like a weekend ski trip. Right.
[15:02] Speaker 1: They thought they had him. Kraft thought he had him.
[15:05] Speaker 1: I saw our friend Richard Johnson reported out on X
[15:09] Speaker 1: the Everything app yesterday that there was shock within the
[15:13] Speaker 1: Penn State administration. They thought they had Kilanie's taki. Again,
[15:17] Speaker 1: the error here was assumption. He didn't get pen to paper.
[15:21] Speaker 1: It was a handshake agreement, so he assumed that the
[15:24] Speaker 1: handshake deal was gonna hold. When you go after a
[15:28] Speaker 1: guy with roots this deep, I don't care where it is.
[15:31] Speaker 1: You got to get pen to paper, man, Yeah, you
[15:34] Speaker 1: got to get pen to paper. Because whatever time there
[15:37] Speaker 1: was between the handshake and what happened this week, that
[15:41] Speaker 1: opened the door for second thoughts. That opened up doors
[15:44] Speaker 1: for leaking it to the press somebody did. That opened
[15:48] Speaker 1: up doors for getting the Crumble Cookie guy involved and
[15:52] Speaker 1: maybe circumventing an ad at BYU who wasn't willing to
[15:55] Speaker 1: pony up the cash. Right, So if you leave that
[16:00] Speaker 1: to be true, and I do to an extent kind
[16:04] Speaker 1: of a ball or moved by a colonie Sataki, Yeah, man,
[16:07] Speaker 1: I don't know kind of ball moved to go around
[16:10] Speaker 1: a guy who maybe you might let you walk, but
[16:13] Speaker 1: you like being there, so you're gonna find another Like
[16:16] Speaker 1: that kind of makes me like him even more. If
[16:18] Speaker 1: that's what happened, that would be like some real game
[16:19] Speaker 1: of Throne stuff.
[16:21] Speaker 2: I wonder if he went to Central PA quietly and
[16:24] Speaker 2: was like.
[16:25] Speaker 1: I don't know if I want to be here. Listen,
[16:28] Speaker 1: I don't know where this leaves Penn State. Now I
[16:29] Speaker 1: really don't.
[16:31] Speaker 2: I'll tell you where it leaves them, ty. It leaves
[16:34] Speaker 2: them staring at like I don't play fantasy baseball anymore.
[16:37] Speaker 2: You ever have one of those waiver wire visits? We
[16:39] Speaker 2: were like, I guess Todd zeal I tried this out.
[16:42] Speaker 1: I had an auction draft years ago where I had
[16:45] Speaker 1: to pay thirty five dollars for Sean Figgins. This was
[16:48] Speaker 1: Sean Figgins when he played on the Angels and was
[16:50] Speaker 1: a second basement pretty good. He had, he could fill
[16:53] Speaker 1: up some stats come he was fine. He was not
[16:56] Speaker 1: worth that, And that is the direction I fear Penn
[16:59] Speaker 1: State is headed right now because at this point the
[17:03] Speaker 1: recruiting class is completely toast. There are still good coaches
[17:07] Speaker 1: out there, and I think if you hire the right guy,
[17:10] Speaker 1: whoever that might be, if that guy comes in and wins,
[17:14] Speaker 1: if he's able to get a roster in place quickly
[17:17] Speaker 1: via the portal, it's going to have to be by
[17:18] Speaker 1: the portal at this point. If he comes in, if
[17:22] Speaker 1: he wins, if it looks like there is progress in
[17:24] Speaker 1: any regard, people forget about stuff quick. That's just the
[17:27] Speaker 1: world we live in. These news cycles are like eight
[17:29] Speaker 1: hours at a pop and then we move on. So yeah,
[17:33] Speaker 1: if he comes in, whoever it is, assuming there is
[17:36] Speaker 1: a guy and he comes in and he wins, then yeah,
[17:39] Speaker 1: this will be forgotten. But I hope that they have
[17:44] Speaker 1: a plan, because thus far it feels like hope was
[17:47] Speaker 1: the plan. And that's a real issue when you're dealing with,
[17:51] Speaker 1: as you said, the primary revenue generator with an athletic institution, Like,
[17:56] Speaker 1: if they are going to drag this out, there needs
[17:58] Speaker 1: to be a definitive list of guys that you think
[18:00] Speaker 1: you can get and need to get on the line immediately,
[18:03] Speaker 1: and then a secondary list of guys you know you
[18:06] Speaker 1: can get because they cannot let this drag on much
[18:10] Speaker 1: longer than like a week from now. If we are
[18:12] Speaker 1: recording a week from now and they still do not
[18:14] Speaker 1: have a coach, that's when we start talking about Pat
[18:17] Speaker 1: Kraft losing his job and somebody else needing to take
[18:20] Speaker 1: the reins here and figure this thing out. But this
[18:23] Speaker 1: has definitely taken a bad turn. I am not ready
[18:26] Speaker 1: fully to commit to the fact that the entire thing
[18:29] Speaker 1: was a disaster. It has not been good. But still,
[18:32] Speaker 1: if they get somebody in there who can cobble this
[18:34] Speaker 1: thing together in the portal and can go out there
[18:36] Speaker 1: next year against by the way, a very favorable schedule,
[18:40] Speaker 1: and make this thing feel like it's going in a
[18:42] Speaker 1: good direction, then this will be a thing of the past.
[18:45] Speaker 1: But there have not been many positive signs thus far
[18:49] Speaker 1: to leave me to think that that's even on the table.
[18:52] Speaker 2: This is a really interesting time for Penn State right
[18:55] Speaker 2: because nobody that they hire is going to make the
[18:57] Speaker 2: fan base feel good, because the fan base knows that
[18:59] Speaker 2: this is their seven choice yep. So it's do you
[19:03] Speaker 2: go with an up and comer who's somewhat unproven, do
[19:06] Speaker 2: you go with somebody that you're just like buying low
[19:08] Speaker 2: and potentially getting out of a bad situation for them.
[19:12] Speaker 2: Like do you make a run at Dave A. Randa
[19:14] Speaker 2: or Mike Norvell, Right, somebody with huge program experience who
[19:20] Speaker 2: might need a change of scenery and Penn State might
[19:23] Speaker 2: be able to deliver the money and whatever geography that
[19:28] Speaker 2: could be interesting too. Or do you punt and just
[19:32] Speaker 2: give Terry Smith a year?
[19:34] Speaker 1: Do you punt? Do you give Terry Smith a three
[19:36] Speaker 1: year contract to see what he can do? Right? You know?
[19:39] Speaker 1: And you sort of you effectively.
[19:41] Speaker 2: Punk But if that happens, but see Patcraft loses his
[19:44] Speaker 2: job if Packcraft makes that move, if he's making a
[19:48] Speaker 2: low ceiling move essentially, which would be the viewpoint of
[19:51] Speaker 2: I think Penn State fans. I can't speak for them,
[19:54] Speaker 2: but if it were announced that Terry Smith is the
[19:56] Speaker 2: hired head coach, it would probably be seen as a
[19:59] Speaker 2: failure of a search and he would lose his job.
[20:02] Speaker 2: So he's got to do He's got to think of
[20:03] Speaker 2: his job too.
[20:04] Speaker 1: It was always going to be able to be an
[20:06] Speaker 1: uphill climb to go from James Franklin to a guy
[20:09] Speaker 1: that the fan base that the national college football mechanism
[20:13] Speaker 1: would view as an upgrade, right, because James Franklin's a
[20:16] Speaker 1: top ten caliber coach. The list of guys that you
[20:20] Speaker 1: could get that would be seen as an upgrade to
[20:22] Speaker 1: that is it's very, very small. It's a handful of guys.
[20:25] Speaker 1: Clearly at this point they haven't gotten any of them.
[20:27] Speaker 1: Doesn't seem like any of them more truly interested other
[20:29] Speaker 1: than using Penn State to get a raise. So, yeah,
[20:32] Speaker 1: you don't fire James Franklin just to hire Terry Smith.
[20:36] Speaker 1: And I think and no offense Terry Smith. A lot
[20:38] Speaker 1: of people in the Penn State world love Terry Smith,
[20:40] Speaker 1: and he definitely bleeds blue and white, right, he said
[20:43] Speaker 1: all the right things, and I think he has done
[20:45] Speaker 1: his part down the stretch here to try and keep
[20:48] Speaker 1: the team together, and the players certainly like him, as
[20:50] Speaker 1: they do most interim coaches. Okay, yeah, you don't make
[20:54] Speaker 1: this move, so hier, Terry Smith. You make this move
[20:58] Speaker 1: presumably because you have somebody better. You have Mike Alco
[21:01] Speaker 1: locked up right that, Yeah, you made this move if
[21:05] Speaker 1: you feel like you have a definitive answer for the problem.
[21:09] Speaker 1: And it's growing increasingly clear by the day that he
[21:13] Speaker 1: did not have that or he left too much of
[21:15] Speaker 1: this up to assumption.
[21:18] Speaker 2: Or he didn't have the foresight to see that jobs
[21:20] Speaker 2: like Florida and LSU might be opening up and that
[21:23] Speaker 2: the pool of interested candidates was going to shrink.
[21:26] Speaker 1: By a I mean margin. Look, man, I called this
[21:30] Speaker 1: out right away, and I was worried about it, and
[21:33] Speaker 1: maybe with history as a guide, I was right. I
[21:37] Speaker 1: was worried about a South Carolina situation from back in
[21:39] Speaker 1: the day when they fired a coach early because they
[21:41] Speaker 1: thought they would get Tom Herman. I don't know if
[21:43] Speaker 1: there was a Tom Herman out there this year, maybe
[21:46] Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five that was Lane Kiffen. But regardless,
[21:51] Speaker 1: South Carolina made the move way back when they wanted
[21:54] Speaker 1: to get Tom Herman. Tom Herman ended up going to Texas.
[21:56] Speaker 1: South Carolina ended up going in a much more disappointing direction.
[21:59] Speaker 2: Well speaking, which Will mus Champ is available. Great, uh great, Yeah,
[22:04] Speaker 2: there's an opportunity to do some funny stuff with It's
[22:07] Speaker 2: not that funny to you, I understand, but like you
[22:09] Speaker 2: can be like, oh, we got the guy from Missouri.
[22:12] Speaker 1: I've seen here.
[22:12] Speaker 2: It's Missouri State. We got Ryan Beard.
[22:15] Speaker 1: It's like in Major League two, when they get Hiroshi
[22:18] Speaker 1: Kamakazi Tanaka. He used to play for the Giants, not
[22:21] Speaker 1: those Giants, right.
[22:22] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we got an Adrian Peterson, we'll see.
[22:26] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, we got the Adrian Peterson that played fullback
[22:29] Speaker 1: for the Bears or whatever.
[22:30] Speaker 2: By the way, I think the will Stein hire makes
[22:31] Speaker 2: a good amount of sense for Kentucky. I'm positive they
[22:34] Speaker 2: decided that they were willing to move on from Mark
[22:36] Speaker 2: Stoops once they had back channeled and known that will
[22:40] Speaker 2: Stein would be willing. Also, it appears that Tash Lupoi,
[22:43] Speaker 2: it's not officially officially yet at the time of recording,
[22:45] Speaker 2: is taking the cow job. Obviously he played for and
[22:47] Speaker 2: coached at cals Organ losing both their coordinators after the postseason.
[22:51] Speaker 2: They're both going to stick around, as are a lot
[22:53] Speaker 2: of these guys sticking around. Brian Hartline, I believe, is
[22:56] Speaker 2: sticking around in Columbus before heading down Tampa. A lot
[23:01] Speaker 2: of action tie, just not in state College.
[23:03] Speaker 1: In state College. Well there's that hole.
[23:06] Speaker 2: By the way, the whole time we were talking, I
[23:08] Speaker 2: was thinking about like two thousand and six Waiver Wire picks.
[23:10] Speaker 2: I was just like Richard Hidalgo's a name, right, that's
[23:13] Speaker 2: all I was thinking, like, then, Jeff.
[23:15] Speaker 1: Jenkins Man, Penn State's going to have to go to
[23:18] Speaker 1: the waiver wire to find their coach. Yeah, Willie Taggart.
[23:21] Speaker 1: They're gonna have to put in like their entire FOB
[23:23] Speaker 1: budget to get Brian Dable, Mike Riley. God, Okay, anyway, Look,
[23:30] Speaker 1: we'll keep you up to speed on it. I've been
[23:32] Speaker 1: trying to tweet through the storm. I don't know what
[23:35] Speaker 1: the hell they're doing at this point. I have no idea.
[23:37] Speaker 1: I have some guesses, but I'm not going to put
[23:40] Speaker 1: it out there because I I I totally before my
[23:43] Speaker 1: top three was Kalani Sataki, Brian Hartline, and Brian Dable.
[23:46] Speaker 1: So I still got one left. We'll roll with that
[23:49] Speaker 1: until time when he's off the board as well and
[23:53] Speaker 1: they go with somebody else, if they go with somebody
[23:54] Speaker 1: else before the start of next season.
[23:56] Speaker 2: But Brian Dable was the one who was literally sitting
[23:58] Speaker 2: kicked to the curb. He was sitting on the curb
[24:00] Speaker 2: after being let go from the Giants. Unless that was
[24:02] Speaker 2: like a fake generated image, did you see that.
[24:05] Speaker 1: I saw he was carrying water bottles while wearing a
[24:07] Speaker 1: Penn State sweatshirt. But I didn't see him sitting on
[24:09] Speaker 1: a curb, so I don't know. Oh, okay, okay. So
[24:12] Speaker 1: there's that. Let's talk about some of this playoff stuff
[24:16] Speaker 1: you want to do that.
[24:17] Speaker 2: We can talk playoff and then we have conference championship game.
[24:19] Speaker 1: Year's eve will be so awesome. We have new playoff rankings. Dan,
[24:27] Speaker 1: it's the penultimate set of rankings. We've got Ohio State one,
[24:32] Speaker 1: Indiana two, Georgia up to three, Texas Tech up to four,
[24:36] Speaker 1: your Oregon Ducks up to five, Ole Miss at six A,
[24:40] Speaker 1: and m down four all the way to number seven,
[24:43] Speaker 1: Oklahoma holding steady at eight. To round things out, we've
[24:46] Speaker 1: got Alabama moving up one at nine, Notre Dame dropping
[24:50] Speaker 1: one to number ten, BYU holding steady at eleven, in
[24:54] Speaker 1: Miami at number twelve. There has been much, and I
[24:59] Speaker 1: do mean much online chatter about how the committee justified
[25:04] Speaker 1: some of these rankings, in particular, what is going on
[25:09] Speaker 1: at the back end of that twelve the Alabama Notre Dame,
[25:14] Speaker 1: BYU Miami, and I should mention Texas jumping about three
[25:18] Speaker 1: all the way to number thirteen. That grouping of five
[25:22] Speaker 1: teams has certainly animated the online college football sphere. The committee,
[25:28] Speaker 1: as they described it was, I guess impressed enough to
[25:32] Speaker 1: move Alabama up up one over Notre Dame after they
[25:37] Speaker 1: knocked off Auburn on the road a week ago. There
[25:42] Speaker 1: was some chatter about maybe if two teams are next
[25:48] Speaker 1: to each other, even if they don't play, they could
[25:51] Speaker 1: invoke some sort of tiebreaker, ie they still are giving
[25:54] Speaker 1: themselves away, perhaps to put Miami in front of Notre Dame.
[26:00] Speaker 1: The whole BYU discussion is I mean interesting in its
[26:04] Speaker 1: own right. They're eleven and one, they're behind three two
[26:08] Speaker 1: loss teams. They do have an opportunity to play their
[26:10] Speaker 1: way in this weekend. But it does beg the question
[26:13] Speaker 1: if they play a very tight game against Texas Tech,
[26:16] Speaker 1: could the committee favor them even in a loss. What
[26:19] Speaker 1: could happen for a school like Miami again that does
[26:22] Speaker 1: not play, But what kind of upward mobility do they have?
[26:25] Speaker 1: Not just with respect to Notre Dame, but even if
[26:28] Speaker 1: a school like BYU were to lose by a close margin,
[26:33] Speaker 1: would be why you still be the buffer between Notre
[26:35] Speaker 1: Dame and Miami. It feels to me like there are
[26:37] Speaker 1: still a range of possibilities that could occur here over
[26:41] Speaker 1: the next week or so. And definitely as we get
[26:44] Speaker 1: into our playoff discussion here after this round of games,
[26:48] Speaker 1: it's going to be really interesting to see what happens.
[26:50] Speaker 1: But your thoughts here, You got any thoughts on what
[26:52] Speaker 1: we see in these latest batch of playoff rankings? No.
[26:55] Speaker 2: With each successive week, I feel like I am proven
[26:58] Speaker 2: more and more oppressions about doubting the committee. From the
[27:01] Speaker 2: start of this playoff from the four team from whatever,
[27:04] Speaker 2: I was like, this is a ridiculous idea. This committee
[27:06] Speaker 2: is flawed, and we're watching them amend things on the fly.
[27:13] Speaker 1: Right.
[27:13] Speaker 2: You see those commercials I forget what the name of
[27:15] Speaker 2: the product is, like the extra strong tape where they're
[27:18] Speaker 2: like taping up a boat, Like look how strong this is?
[27:21] Speaker 2: That that's all this committee is doing, right, They're plugging
[27:24] Speaker 2: leaky holes every week with new ways, like, oh, well
[27:27] Speaker 2: they Alabama can't run the ball, so obviously we got
[27:30] Speaker 2: to dock them this amount. Like what that's the Like,
[27:33] Speaker 2: it's just the metrics are introduced, the idea of having
[27:36] Speaker 2: two teams next to each other and not having head
[27:39] Speaker 2: to head matter as much until they're next to each other,
[27:42] Speaker 2: You're just like, when were you going to explain that
[27:46] Speaker 2: this is like in the bylaws, right that it's just
[27:48] Speaker 2: like you have new people deciding what's important. We've shifted
[27:52] Speaker 2: who's in charge of making these broadcast announcements halfway through
[27:56] Speaker 2: the season because of changes in committee leadership, and it's
[28:00] Speaker 2: just it's insane. And our friend Bruce Feldman voiced this,
[28:04] Speaker 2: I don't know if it was supposed to be a DM,
[28:06] Speaker 2: but it was in response to I think was it
[28:08] Speaker 2: Kevin Clark Kevin, Yeah, Cleven Kevin Clark tweet or sorry
[28:14] Speaker 2: whatever it's called on X the everything app everything.
[28:18] Speaker 1: It may. Obviously this makes no sense.
[28:20] Speaker 2: It makes no sense why they do this beyond you know,
[28:22] Speaker 2: commerce every week because they just contradict themselves constantly because
[28:26] Speaker 2: it's an insane sport with no sample size and people
[28:29] Speaker 2: want to expand it to sixteen so we can argue
[28:31] Speaker 2: about like Virginia versus Tulane, versus Houston versus Iowa, or
[28:36] Speaker 2: get to twenty or twenty four. Like here's what I
[28:39] Speaker 2: don't understand this week personally, and I'm sure you can explain,
[28:42] Speaker 2: or somebody else can explain. So Alabama bumps up after
[28:46] Speaker 2: beating a team with a losing record, right, and Notre
[28:49] Speaker 2: Dame bumps down after beating a team with a losing record, Right,
[28:53] Speaker 2: we're gonna punish Notre Dame. So it seems like it's
[28:55] Speaker 2: a BYU buffer for Alabama being moved up there. So
[28:59] Speaker 2: BYU wins, Alabama is buffered in with Notre Dame bumping out, right,
[29:05] Speaker 2: That's what it seems to me.
[29:06] Speaker 1: You can't risk losing that fifth SEC team in the tour, right,
[29:10] Speaker 1: you can't risk it.
[29:11] Speaker 2: Right, Vandy essentially winds up throttling what the committee after
[29:16] Speaker 2: eleven weeks looked at as a top twenty team in Tennessee.
[29:19] Speaker 2: How many spots did Vandy move up?
[29:22] Speaker 1: You know, right? They moved up none the other so
[29:24] Speaker 1: they moved.
[29:24] Speaker 2: Up zero spots after on the road. Beating up on
[29:27] Speaker 2: a really good team per the committee I Tennessee to
[29:30] Speaker 2: me is pretty flawed. But they put him in the
[29:32] Speaker 2: top twenty. So after eleven games they must be some
[29:34] Speaker 2: sort of meaningfully top twenty team. Vandy beats them by
[29:37] Speaker 2: whatever it is, three touchdowns unchanged. Texas beats a really
[29:42] Speaker 2: good team obviously in the top five in Texas A
[29:44] Speaker 2: and M. They move up three Okay, so that has
[29:47] Speaker 2: to be meaningful, right, that they beat up on this
[29:49] Speaker 2: team at home, they move up three. They have three losses.
[29:53] Speaker 2: They're ahead of a Vanderbilt team they beat by three
[29:55] Speaker 2: at home, who has two losses. If you want to
[29:59] Speaker 2: p Miami ahead of Notre Dame, you're not going to
[30:01] Speaker 2: get a strong argument from me. But like, Miami just
[30:05] Speaker 2: beat a team that Notre Dame just throttled. They both
[30:07] Speaker 2: do this thing, and Miami doesn't move.
[30:10] Speaker 1: Up at all. Right, well that's the thing.
[30:13] Speaker 2: Yeah, And so you're just like, what rhyme or reason
[30:16] Speaker 2: behind any of this can we point to? And so
[30:21] Speaker 2: it's all crazy, it's all insane. They obviously can't look
[30:26] Speaker 2: into the future and see that there's a possibility that
[30:28] Speaker 2: a seven and five or I guess eight and five
[30:30] Speaker 2: at that moment would win the ACC and then lead
[30:33] Speaker 2: to James Madison or something jumping into this tournament and
[30:36] Speaker 2: James Madison's good team, but keeping Miami out because of
[30:40] Speaker 2: that specific rule that they couldn't see the effects taking place,
[30:45] Speaker 2: because of that's barely english. I just I don't watch
[30:49] Speaker 2: the show. I see the rankings, and I just sort
[30:51] Speaker 2: of shrug and we talk about it because this is
[30:55] Speaker 2: our sport. But nothing makes sense or of this makes sense.
[31:01] Speaker 2: And we we keep wanting to empower these people and
[31:05] Speaker 2: go to more teams, and we empower them to make
[31:08] Speaker 2: decisions about where they play, what the schedule is. When
[31:12] Speaker 2: they just keep stacking bad decisions atop one another. It's
[31:17] Speaker 2: just incredible that we have a committee of people and
[31:22] Speaker 2: then we get people on has anybody outside of ESPN
[31:25] Speaker 2: advocated for Texas in any sort of meaningful way? Maybe
[31:27] Speaker 2: they have, I just haven't seen it or heard it.
[31:31] Speaker 2: Have they?
[31:31] Speaker 1: Have you seen that from anybody? I mean not really. No.
[31:36] Speaker 1: The talking point of like sile like Steve Sarkisian No.
[31:40] Speaker 2: No, I mean it was apparently Dan Orlovsky and kirkurb Street.
[31:43] Speaker 2: We're like, how do you keep Texas out? How do
[31:45] Speaker 2: you keep Texas out? It's like Texas schedule Ohio State
[31:48] Speaker 2: because they viewed it as a risky maneuver worth taking
[31:52] Speaker 2: that we recruit, we stack top five classes. We are
[31:56] Speaker 2: built similarly, let's challenge the best in order to be
[31:59] Speaker 2: the best, and then when they lose, they're like, well,
[32:01] Speaker 2: we didn't have.
[32:02] Speaker 1: To do that. We'll just schedule with Louisiana Tech or whatever.
[32:06] Speaker 2: It's such weird, cowardly backpedaling, Like if you don't want
[32:11] Speaker 2: a big non conference win. If you don't want the
[32:13] Speaker 2: money that comes with it, don't schedule it. Sometimes you
[32:17] Speaker 2: lose games and you have to deal with the consequences
[32:20] Speaker 2: and move on. Texas does not believe in that. There's
[32:23] Speaker 2: like a certain like crazy amount of entitlement from Texas
[32:26] Speaker 2: and people that can't help but defawn over this year's
[32:30] Speaker 2: Texas team. This year is the one you're putting everything. Guys,
[32:35] Speaker 2: what are we doing? What are we doing?
[32:38] Speaker 1: This year?
[32:39] Speaker 2: Is Texas team with a team that had to play
[32:42] Speaker 2: overtime against Kentucky. Mississippi State scored a touchdown against Kentucky
[32:47] Speaker 2: one touchdown.
[32:48] Speaker 1: Right one one one single touchdown.
[32:52] Speaker 2: This is not a data point. This is not a
[32:54] Speaker 2: Texas team that's looked like a playoff team for the
[32:56] Speaker 2: majority of the season. But they beat the team that's
[32:59] Speaker 2: in the top five, that hasn't played anybody in texts
[33:01] Speaker 2: saying I'm a good win and we're like, how do
[33:04] Speaker 2: you get into the Poseason without tex It's insane?
[33:10] Speaker 1: Win more games, It's all it takes. We got to
[33:13] Speaker 1: find that Taylor twelve month sound. What do we even
[33:16] Speaker 1: do it? We have to what do we even do
[33:17] Speaker 1: We need that don't understand.
[33:19] Speaker 2: I just I don't understand the Texas fawning like you
[33:22] Speaker 2: had three years to turn your quarterback into a consistently
[33:25] Speaker 2: strong quarterback surrounded by blue chip dudes, and he wasn't
[33:28] Speaker 2: until the last game of the season, and we're like
[33:31] Speaker 2: all is forgiven.
[33:33] Speaker 1: I just I feel like I'm taking crazy bills here. Well,
[33:37] Speaker 1: I gotta be honest with you, and I mean, I'm
[33:39] Speaker 1: not going to belabor this point because I feel like
[33:41] Speaker 1: the Internet's already done that for me. But yeah, you know,
[33:44] Speaker 1: I mean, I'm I'm a Notre Dame fan through and through,
[33:49] Speaker 1: and obviously i'd like to see them in this playoff.
[33:52] Speaker 1: I think they're one of the best twelve teams in
[33:54] Speaker 1: the country. I think they're one of the best, like
[33:57] Speaker 1: eight teams in the country. I think they're really really good.
[34:01] Speaker 1: I understand where they're ranked, and even me, as I'm
[34:04] Speaker 1: looking at this after the new rankings come out, I'm
[34:07] Speaker 1: thinking to myself, this is going to be a situation
[34:09] Speaker 1: where BYU loses, they're going to have Notre Dame in
[34:11] Speaker 1: Miami back to back, and it's going to be really
[34:13] Speaker 1: freaking hard to justify keeping Notre Dame ahead of Miami
[34:15] Speaker 1: if it comes to that.
[34:17] Speaker 2: But obviously nothing will have changed this week as both
[34:20] Speaker 2: nothing will have changed.
[34:22] Speaker 1: The only thing that might change is a little bit
[34:24] Speaker 1: of public pressure and maybe some numbers on the back
[34:26] Speaker 1: end with regardless strength of schedule and resume and some
[34:29] Speaker 1: of the nerd stats, right, But like, I don't know
[34:33] Speaker 1: how you do that, Okay, And this is speaking as
[34:36] Speaker 1: somebody who likes Notre Dame and wants to see no
[34:38] Speaker 1: play in this Personally, I think Notre Dame in Miami
[34:40] Speaker 1: both deserve to be in this field. You know, I
[34:44] Speaker 1: have spoken out against Oklahoma, who has an incredible resume
[34:48] Speaker 1: and you know, has done everything within their power as
[34:50] Speaker 1: of late to try and get into this field. I
[34:51] Speaker 1: think both these teams, Notre Dame mim Miami would be
[34:54] Speaker 1: sure Oklahoma. So kind of in my like goofy wish casting,
[35:00] Speaker 1: I'm thinking to myself, we need Georgia to knock down
[35:03] Speaker 1: Alabama and needed to beat by like three touchdowns. We
[35:06] Speaker 1: need BYU to lose. Hopefully the committee comes to its
[35:10] Speaker 1: census and it's like, hey, we can't put a three
[35:11] Speaker 1: loss team in there that just got drilled by a
[35:13] Speaker 1: top five team. We're gonna bump Alabama out. We're gonna
[35:16] Speaker 1: bump YU out. Then both Notre Dame and Miami get in,
[35:19] Speaker 1: and then because they're on opposite sides of the bracket,
[35:21] Speaker 1: they run the table. They meet each other from national championship.
[35:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, obviously Notre Dame in Miami did not have the
[35:26] Speaker 2: opportunity as two loss teams in the way that Alabama
[35:29] Speaker 2: did in separate position, and I had to play for conference.
[35:32] Speaker 1: Champions is speaking with the fan brain?
[35:34] Speaker 2: Okay, No, I I totally hear you. I don't know
[35:37] Speaker 2: what it would What happens.
[35:38] Speaker 1: Though, What happens if Alabama loses by like twenty points
[35:40] Speaker 1: to Georgia. Do they get bumped out?
[35:44] Speaker 2: If Alabama gets if they lose in the way that
[35:47] Speaker 2: by the way Texas lost to Georgia.
[35:48] Speaker 1: If they lose to Georgia, Yeah, if they get hammered
[35:52] Speaker 1: by Georgia, right, which is apparently well the committee to
[35:56] Speaker 1: knock them.
[35:56] Speaker 2: Out, it's not disqualifying. ESPN will still advocate for Alabama
[36:01] Speaker 2: because lots of teams who should clearly be in the
[36:04] Speaker 2: playoff lose by twenty five to Georgia recently.
[36:09] Speaker 1: What should you do?
[36:11] Speaker 2: I don't think you punish them dramatically unless it is
[36:14] Speaker 2: a fully uncompetitive loss. I think the manner matters here.
[36:18] Speaker 2: So what is eighteen versus twenty six?
[36:21] Speaker 1: I don't know.
[36:22] Speaker 2: I think you're gonna have to watch the game and
[36:23] Speaker 2: see what kind of control Georgia has in Alabama doesn't
[36:26] Speaker 2: over the course of those four quarters. I'm not fully
[36:29] Speaker 2: against keeping Alabama out if they're not at all in
[36:31] Speaker 2: control of this game, and I'm okay with keeping them
[36:35] Speaker 2: in if it's a tight loss that they are playing
[36:38] Speaker 2: in a game that others are not playing in. So
[36:42] Speaker 2: I guess I'm just sort of waiting, see and sitting
[36:44] Speaker 2: on the fence here.
[36:44] Speaker 1: Listen. The only thing that I will say to wrap
[36:46] Speaker 1: up this discussion and people kill weigh in Siliver, wellg
[36:49] Speaker 1: want to com let us know their thoughts. We've had
[36:50] Speaker 1: some people email in their thoughts. We appreciate it, of course,
[36:53] Speaker 1: many of whom don't agree with us. That's fine, that's okay.
[36:57] Speaker 1: All I will say is something that I have maintained
[37:02] Speaker 1: since the first day we did this podcast, back in
[37:04] Speaker 1: two thousand and eight, the year of Our Lord, two
[37:07] Speaker 1: thousand and eight, great year. A team is not its schedule.
[37:12] Speaker 1: You are not your schedule. Okay, this is my boise
[37:16] Speaker 1: state argument from way back when. Right, it's how you perform,
[37:19] Speaker 1: it's how you perform against that schedule. That is generally
[37:23] Speaker 1: how I like to great teams. Now, I've been pretty
[37:25] Speaker 1: open about the fact that I'm looking at rankings, not
[37:28] Speaker 1: so much from the analytical side this year, but just
[37:31] Speaker 1: from when I'm ranking teams who I think could beat whom. Sure,
[37:34] Speaker 1: that's how I have been is that's kind of the
[37:36] Speaker 1: thought exercise I've been going through the tie test. That's
[37:39] Speaker 1: the tie test. Yeah, it is, it is. And I
[37:41] Speaker 1: know that's not scientific and people are going to poke
[37:44] Speaker 1: holes in that, and I don't really give a damn.
[37:45] Speaker 1: That's shit.
[37:46] Speaker 2: How no, less, it's no less credible than anything that's
[37:50] Speaker 2: happening on official levels.
[37:51] Speaker 1: Well that's true. That's true. So I would welcome our
[37:55] Speaker 1: ver bawlers out there, either in our discord at verballers
[37:58] Speaker 1: dot com, out on the interwebs, any of our social
[38:01] Speaker 1: media channels, saliverbo at gmail dot com, whatever works for you. Yeah,
[38:07] Speaker 1: if you have thoughts on this, we would love to
[38:09] Speaker 1: hear the comments. Leave them in YouTube comments, Spotify comments,
[38:12] Speaker 1: all that stuff. Whatever works best for you. It is
[38:16] Speaker 1: free to reach out to us. We do read everything.
[38:20] Speaker 1: Don't be a dick, but reach out. I would love
[38:22] Speaker 1: to hear from as many people as we can. It
[38:24] Speaker 1: would be good to get I don't know, as much
[38:27] Speaker 1: opinion in the door as we can before we go
[38:29] Speaker 1: into this weekend and before we go through the whole
[38:31] Speaker 1: rigamarole of picking the twelve teams next week?
[38:34] Speaker 2: Will you agree here and now to do a town
[38:36] Speaker 2: hall at Yakos in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
[38:38] Speaker 1: Town hall? On what a town hall? I don't know.
[38:41] Speaker 1: You want?
[38:41] Speaker 2: You want that feedback? Ty, you want to speak directly
[38:44] Speaker 2: to listeners. I mean, Yakos.
[38:46] Speaker 1: What street is Yaco's on in Allentown Hamilton Boulevard in Allentown.
[38:50] Speaker 2: Hamilton Boulevard, Allentown, PA. Don't say TI didn't offer you
[38:53] Speaker 2: the opportunity.
[38:54] Speaker 1: He'll be there. That's the original. I believe that's I
[38:57] Speaker 1: think that's the original Yakos. Okay, I could be wrong
[39:01] Speaker 1: about that. They're a bunch around town, but yeah, yeah, sure,
[39:04] Speaker 1: we'll talk to We'll talk to the Yaco's management and
[39:07] Speaker 1: see if we could arrange a town hall situation. I
[39:11] Speaker 1: got to buy a hot dog or at least a
[39:12] Speaker 1: coke or something if you come in.
[39:13] Speaker 2: But depending on how much you eat, it could turn
[39:16] Speaker 2: into a brown haul very quickly, so be prepared.
[39:20] Speaker 1: At you yeah, thank you very much. Why don't we
[39:24] Speaker 1: get to our conference championship games. Let's do that time
[39:30] Speaker 1: the week Conference championship week. Baby, we don't got a
[39:34] Speaker 1: nickname for this week. We don't need a nickname for
[39:36] Speaker 1: this week's true conference championship week. It's already got a nickname,
[39:42] Speaker 1: all right. So here's the deal. As I said, we've
[39:45] Speaker 1: got games on Friday, We've got games on Saturday. I
[39:48] Speaker 1: am going to start with the Power for Action at
[39:52] Speaker 1: high noon on ABC. They play it at at and
[39:56] Speaker 1: T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. It's the Big twelve Championship
[39:59] Speaker 1: and it is the first rematch we're going to discuss
[40:02] Speaker 1: here today. The aforementioned b YU Cougar is eleven and
[40:06] Speaker 1: one squaring off against Texas Tech, also eleven to one.
[40:10] Speaker 1: Texas Tech favored by about twelve and one half points.
[40:13] Speaker 1: As I said, this is rematch. Texas Tech won the
[40:16] Speaker 1: first meeting by a twenty nine to seven score. My question,
[40:22] Speaker 1: just to kick things off here, a bunch of distraction
[40:26] Speaker 1: this week with Klonie's talckey. Yes, there is has been,
[40:29] Speaker 1: all right, bunch of distractions went Thermo Nuclear on Monday night.
[40:34] Speaker 1: Everybody found out about it. Then, uh huh? How much
[40:38] Speaker 1: does it? How much does it not fire you up?
[40:42] Speaker 1: If you are in that locker room to hear that
[40:46] Speaker 1: the koshit you know and love decided to forego and
[40:50] Speaker 1: eleven and a half million dollar offers something in that
[40:53] Speaker 1: neighborhood from is that what it was? Something from a
[40:57] Speaker 1: school across the good old us of A. And he
[41:00] Speaker 1: wants to stay right there with you in provo. You
[41:04] Speaker 1: know it's going to be in Arlington to square off
[41:06] Speaker 1: against a team that beach earlier in the year. Does
[41:08] Speaker 1: that fire you up? Are you still distract? How do
[41:11] Speaker 1: you feel about that? That's not going to appear.
[41:13] Speaker 2: That quote is not going to appear in like the
[41:14] Speaker 2: Central PA Board of Tourism. Somebody just turned out eleven
[41:18] Speaker 2: million dollars to move here. I don't know how it
[41:23] Speaker 2: makes me feel.
[41:24] Speaker 1: I don't know.
[41:24] Speaker 2: I think the players prepare. I think the players are
[41:26] Speaker 2: obviously amped to sort of get revenge on Texas Tech
[41:29] Speaker 2: and win the Big twelve. It's a huge deal for BYU,
[41:32] Speaker 2: It's a huge deal for Texas Tech. These are two
[41:34] Speaker 2: teams looking to win this conference the way that it's
[41:36] Speaker 2: constituted for the first time, and I think this game
[41:39] Speaker 2: is a huge deal.
[41:40] Speaker 1: Right.
[41:40] Speaker 2: It's a cherry on top of an unbelievable season for
[41:44] Speaker 2: really both of these teams, but specifically Texas Tech with
[41:46] Speaker 2: where they've been recently and being pretty good but not
[41:49] Speaker 2: quite breaking through, and it would be huge for BYU.
[41:55] Speaker 2: I think BYU has a very specific advantage in that
[41:58] Speaker 2: Texas Tech has prepared for BYU, and BYU has seen
[42:02] Speaker 2: how Texas Tech can specifically scheme and succeed against you.
[42:08] Speaker 2: Obviously vice versa, right that Texas Tech saw how BYU
[42:11] Speaker 2: prepared and they were able to succeed in a way
[42:14] Speaker 2: by You clearly wasn't. But that's why it said, you know,
[42:17] Speaker 2: it's tough to beat a good team twice, and so
[42:20] Speaker 2: it seems like a big line and it's reasonable given
[42:24] Speaker 2: the was it twenty nine to seven the first time around? Yeah,
[42:30] Speaker 2: I think there is something to BYU having the ability
[42:34] Speaker 2: to self scout. I think there is something to the
[42:37] Speaker 2: fact that bear Bachmeier is as young as he is.
[42:39] Speaker 2: What is he weigh one hundred and sixty pound one
[42:41] Speaker 2: hundred and fifty five, he's he's It depends on the week, really, right.
[42:45] Speaker 1: We've had him as high as two seventy as low
[42:47] Speaker 1: as one fifty, so somewhere in between, I would say,
[42:50] Speaker 1: we just had Thanksgiving, So let's assume two fifty three
[42:52] Speaker 1: fifty two.
[42:53] Speaker 2: Okay. There is something to his growth being more dramatic
[42:58] Speaker 2: because of his age than bar Morton's sparing. Morton is
[43:01] Speaker 2: sort of who he is, which is good, and I
[43:03] Speaker 2: think there's you know, there's always just gonna be growth,
[43:05] Speaker 2: especially when you have that kind of loss. You're like, oh,
[43:07] Speaker 2: this is what they were doing, this is how okay,
[43:08] Speaker 2: I see now. So I just am not fully coming
[43:14] Speaker 2: around to the fact that BYU can address being completely
[43:20] Speaker 2: hounded up front by this Texas Tech front. You just
[43:23] Speaker 2: can't get better in a season. You can get healthier,
[43:26] Speaker 2: you can keep more guys in to protect, but like
[43:29] Speaker 2: that wave of violence that Texas Tech has upfront on defense,
[43:34] Speaker 2: I just don't know how you account for that in
[43:36] Speaker 2: a few weeks. So I'm taking Texas Tech here. What
[43:40] Speaker 2: they've done to control games from the onset more often
[43:44] Speaker 2: is more impressive to me. They've gotten healthier, everybody gets healthier.
[43:51] Speaker 2: I'm just I'm in on Texas Tech here to do
[43:54] Speaker 2: more of what they've been doing. There's no reason for
[43:56] Speaker 2: me to think that they're going to fall off, and
[43:58] Speaker 2: that BYU has thirty more points of control.
[44:03] Speaker 1: Over these past few weeks.
[44:05] Speaker 2: So okay, I'm going to say Texas Tech wins this one.
[44:09] Speaker 2: I have it at like thirty one seventeen, so I
[44:12] Speaker 2: guess barely covering. But I just haven't found where the
[44:16] Speaker 2: consistent explosion is coming from on offense from BYU to
[44:21] Speaker 2: justify them being that much better against a team like this.
[44:25] Speaker 1: I sunk my teeth into that first game. I wanted
[44:27] Speaker 1: to go back and watch it, and you know, it
[44:30] Speaker 1: wasn't particularly close on the scoreboard. Texas Tech led twenty
[44:34] Speaker 1: six to nothing until the final three minutes, right. I
[44:38] Speaker 1: do think, though, if you pop the hood on that
[44:40] Speaker 1: first game, it was actually a lot closer than the
[44:42] Speaker 1: score indicates. And I realized that may sound baddy to
[44:46] Speaker 1: people out there who look at the score and like,
[44:48] Speaker 1: what are you talking about. I say that because this
[44:51] Speaker 1: was very much a defensive battle the first time around.
[44:54] Speaker 1: There were a total of thirty two third down attempts
[44:57] Speaker 1: in this game. Both defenses were forcing a lot of
[45:00] Speaker 1: those high leverage moments, havoc plays things of that nature.
[45:04] Speaker 1: BYU forced five Texas Tech field goal attempts. It's not
[45:09] Speaker 1: like they were overpowered turned the Texas Tech offense at all.
[45:14] Speaker 1: The difference was that Texas Tech on defense was just
[45:18] Speaker 1: a little bit better. They held BYU to three or
[45:21] Speaker 1: fourteen on third downs. They forced three turnovers, which was
[45:25] Speaker 1: not the norm for BYU by any stretch. But BYU
[45:29] Speaker 1: fell in a hole and they weren't able to get
[45:31] Speaker 1: it going on the ground with LJ. Martin or bear Bachmeyer,
[45:34] Speaker 1: which meant bear Bachmeyer had to throw at thirty eight times,
[45:37] Speaker 1: which by the way, was the most pasc attempts he's
[45:39] Speaker 1: had in any game this season. So we could debate
[45:43] Speaker 1: the merits of what the game plan was going in
[45:45] Speaker 1: versus coming out, but I feel fairly confident in saying
[45:48] Speaker 1: that they had to deviate a little bit from what
[45:50] Speaker 1: they originally planned. Right. Tech was the better team in
[45:55] Speaker 1: that game, even if you take out all the turnovers,
[45:58] Speaker 1: Tech was the better team, and I think the better
[46:00] Speaker 1: team won that game. But my sense is going into
[46:03] Speaker 1: this one that we're going to see a very similar
[46:05] Speaker 1: game this time around and provided BYU doesn't have some
[46:10] Speaker 1: of those mistakes. To your point about self scouting, I
[46:13] Speaker 1: think it's closer. I think it's closer, and I don't
[46:17] Speaker 1: think that's a stretch, because again, this is not a
[46:20] Speaker 1: team that's been that mistake prone this season. I think
[46:22] Speaker 1: they're like plus twelve. They've had turnover lock, but they're
[46:25] Speaker 1: like plus twelve or something in turnover Margine, I think
[46:30] Speaker 1: the first game was a bit of an aberration. How
[46:32] Speaker 1: much that remains to be seen, and we could talk
[46:34] Speaker 1: about that when we do the recap. I think I'm
[46:37] Speaker 1: with you. I think Tech wins this one as well.
[46:40] Speaker 1: I think they are good enough to stop the run,
[46:42] Speaker 1: they're good enough to force the pass, and that's a
[46:44] Speaker 1: matchup to me where they have a significant advantage. Per
[46:48] Speaker 1: our friend Max olson over at ESPN, Tech as the
[46:50] Speaker 1: best stop rate of any defense in the country, which
[46:53] Speaker 1: means they're basically just not allowing teams to score. So
[46:57] Speaker 1: I'm of the mind that we're again going to see
[46:59] Speaker 1: something of defensive slugfest in this one. I don't have
[47:03] Speaker 1: it quite as high scoring as you do. I've got
[47:06] Speaker 1: twenty three to sixteen Texas Tech winning. Moving on, as
[47:11] Speaker 1: Big twelve champion. But if we're going to think of
[47:13] Speaker 1: it in terms of the point spread, I would have
[47:15] Speaker 1: byu to cover, okay, and by the way, to your
[47:18] Speaker 1: point of forcing all of those field goals. If there
[47:20] Speaker 1: is a.
[47:22] Speaker 2: Vulnerability, if the what is it in the Death Star?
[47:26] Speaker 2: Not that Texas Tech has reached that status yet, there's
[47:29] Speaker 2: someone with parsex ty.
[47:30] Speaker 1: This isn't my universe. What are we talking about here, Yeah,
[47:35] Speaker 1: it's the floor. The Test Star is what you're talking Yeah, yeah,
[47:37] Speaker 1: the flo.
[47:37] Speaker 2: But so Texas Tech in the red zone specifically has
[47:41] Speaker 2: been not great offensively right in terms of finishing drives,
[47:46] Speaker 2: especially against the better teams on their schedule. It hasn't
[47:48] Speaker 2: prevented wins by and large, but right now, the red
[47:51] Speaker 2: zone touchdown rate is fifty eight percent, their goal to
[47:54] Speaker 2: go touchdown rate is seventy five percent. It's below average
[47:57] Speaker 2: and so doesn't matter if you score an explosion and
[48:00] Speaker 2: Texas dec does plenty of that, But that is I think,
[48:05] Speaker 2: you know, a tip of the cap to you for
[48:07] Speaker 2: noticing that from that first matchup. That closing those drives,
[48:10] Speaker 2: finishing those drives I think is a big deal in
[48:12] Speaker 2: this game, and quite excited to see it. I just
[48:16] Speaker 2: I worry that it's going to be trying to build
[48:18] Speaker 2: the plane entirely out of bear Bachmeyer if the run
[48:21] Speaker 2: isn't there once again, So.
[48:24] Speaker 1: Let's move to four pm on Saturday on ABC. The
[48:28] Speaker 1: SEC Championship. They played this one Mercedes Benz Stadium in
[48:32] Speaker 1: at Atlanta. We've got Georgia eleven and one, We've got
[48:35] Speaker 1: Alabama ten and two. Georgia is favored by two two
[48:38] Speaker 1: and a half three points depends where you look. Remember
[48:41] Speaker 1: these teams played earlier in the year, same week as
[48:45] Speaker 1: Penn State and Oregon, the same week as Indiana Iowa.
[48:48] Speaker 1: There were a bunch of big games. That was a
[48:50] Speaker 1: huge week Week six. I want to say, yep, twenty
[48:53] Speaker 1: four to twenty one was your final. Alabama won that one.
[48:56] Speaker 1: Alabama has won the last three meetings between these two teams.
[49:00] Speaker 1: All three have been won score affairs. So for whatever
[49:03] Speaker 1: it's worth, it would at least seem like we're in
[49:06] Speaker 1: for another barnburner here. Yes, how do you feel?
[49:11] Speaker 2: I think I like Georgia. Kirby never beats Bama, but
[49:14] Speaker 2: a lot of that is Nick Saban. They Bama didn't
[49:17] Speaker 2: do anything in the second half this year. And you
[49:19] Speaker 2: know held on for the win. Also, Bama since the
[49:23] Speaker 2: Tennessee game hasn't been a team I would say is
[49:27] Speaker 2: in constant control.
[49:29] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's and you know, I know Bill Connelly has
[49:33] Speaker 1: written about this a little bit. Yeah, and you and
[49:36] Speaker 1: I spoke to it on occasion when we have covered
[49:38] Speaker 1: Alabama games here over the last couple of weeks. But
[49:41] Speaker 1: there's been something of a diminishing return on that passing offense.
[49:45] Speaker 1: It's still very good. Ty Simpson has been amazing and
[49:48] Speaker 1: that's still the primary way that they are moving the football,
[49:50] Speaker 1: that they are scoring points and all that I mean
[49:52] Speaker 1: passing game for them is where it's at. But it
[49:56] Speaker 1: hasn't been nearly as efficient back half of the season
[49:59] Speaker 1: as it was earlier.
[50:00] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, did Ryan Williams have a catch in
[50:05] Speaker 2: the Iron Bowl.
[50:06] Speaker 1: I don't think he did. Did he.
[50:08] Speaker 2: You can fact check me on that. I don't know
[50:10] Speaker 2: how much he was even targeted in that game.
[50:12] Speaker 1: I just I don't know.
[50:13] Speaker 2: There's something that feels and I like Ty Simpson. I
[50:16] Speaker 2: like a lot of these receiving options. Obviously there's a
[50:18] Speaker 2: ton on this defense to like. It was a good
[50:20] Speaker 2: game plan from the Auburn defense.
[50:22] Speaker 1: For sure.
[50:22] Speaker 2: The game got chaotic, as a lot of Iron bowls do.
[50:26] Speaker 2: I just haven't gotten the sinse in the back half
[50:28] Speaker 2: of the schedule again since that Tennessee game that Alabama's
[50:31] Speaker 2: played with a ton of control. The LSU game was chaotic. Obviously,
[50:36] Speaker 2: the South Carolina game needed a lot at the end
[50:39] Speaker 2: of the game to happen and transpire for Alabama to
[50:41] Speaker 2: win that game. Yeah, I just I think Alabama's really good.
[50:46] Speaker 2: I think there's a certain degree of trust I have
[50:48] Speaker 2: even with Kirby Smart never beating basically never beat. He
[50:51] Speaker 2: beat him in a national championship, so that counts, but
[50:53] Speaker 2: his record against Alabama is not great. I think in Atlanta,
[50:57] Speaker 2: I think that was definitely a low point for Gunner Stockton.
[51:00] Speaker 2: I think there's a great bounce back opportunity for him
[51:02] Speaker 2: after last week. I think there was obviously baggage going
[51:04] Speaker 2: into that game with how that game went last year.
[51:07] Speaker 2: It's kind of a letdown spot for both of these
[51:09] Speaker 2: teams after last week. I'm going Georgia because I just
[51:13] Speaker 2: trust more about them in this moment, but.
[51:18] Speaker 1: I'm not confident in it. I don't believe any targets.
[51:22] Speaker 1: Certainly no catches for Ryan Williams a week ago. Okay,
[51:24] Speaker 1: so I think you're right about that. Let me give
[51:28] Speaker 1: a shout out to our friends over at Game on Paper. Please.
[51:32] Speaker 1: Game on Paper. They do an awesome job showing you
[51:35] Speaker 1: pretty much every stat in real time if you're watching
[51:39] Speaker 1: a game. If you want to go back after the
[51:40] Speaker 1: fact and find a game, you can go and find
[51:42] Speaker 1: all this stuff there. One of my favorite things that
[51:45] Speaker 1: they do on their site is if you load it up,
[51:48] Speaker 1: if you scroll all the way down on the I
[51:50] Speaker 1: guess the first tab. They have a section for what
[51:54] Speaker 1: they call most important plays, and it's really just the
[51:57] Speaker 1: measure of which plays throughout the course of the game
[52:01] Speaker 1: swung the win probability the most most important plays. Of
[52:06] Speaker 1: the ten plays that they highlighted the first game between
[52:09] Speaker 1: these two teams, eight of them were on the Georgia side. Now,
[52:14] Speaker 1: Georgia created more explosives in the game as well. Their
[52:18] Speaker 1: problem was basically they couldn't get Ty Simpson off the field.
[52:21] Speaker 1: He had a very clean game through the air. Bama
[52:24] Speaker 1: on the whole was something like thirteen of nineteen on
[52:27] Speaker 1: third downs. They had almost ten more minutes of possession. Sure,
[52:31] Speaker 1: I don't think Alabama's going to win either. I think
[52:34] Speaker 1: I'm with you on that front. I don't think they're
[52:35] Speaker 1: going to get four straight on Kirby smart. I feel
[52:37] Speaker 1: like Georgia has gotten better as the season has progressed.
[52:42] Speaker 1: I don't feel the same about Alabama. And I think
[52:44] Speaker 1: Kirby's going to learn a lot from how Oklahoma attacked
[52:48] Speaker 1: Alabama from how Auburn last week attacked Alabama. I am
[52:52] Speaker 1: leaving a bit to assumption here, and we've already outlined
[52:54] Speaker 1: the dangers and leaving things to assumption, So forgive me
[52:57] Speaker 1: a little bit indulgent. We could, but I just I
[53:01] Speaker 1: expect that Georgia is going to have a better plan
[53:03] Speaker 1: this time around for getting off the field, and I
[53:07] Speaker 1: hope that maybe that Texas game that we saw a
[53:09] Speaker 1: few weeks ago, that we referenced earlier in the episode,
[53:13] Speaker 1: for me, that was something of a proof of concept.
[53:15] Speaker 1: Not nearly as good an offense. I get that, but
[53:18] Speaker 1: it was very telegraphed that Texas could only win through
[53:22] Speaker 1: the air, and Georgia knew it, and they held them
[53:24] Speaker 1: the two of twelve and third downs. They were much
[53:26] Speaker 1: better about getting off the field. They won that game
[53:28] Speaker 1: going away, So I am expecting something of a step
[53:32] Speaker 1: up here from Georgia, both on defense as well as
[53:35] Speaker 1: on offense, and I think the game plan needs to
[53:39] Speaker 1: lean a little bit more into what Gunner Stockton gives them.
[53:43] Speaker 1: Gunnerstockedon might be the best big game player in this matchup.
[53:47] Speaker 1: He just finds ways to get things done. I think
[53:51] Speaker 1: the comparisons from time to time the stets in Bennett
[53:54] Speaker 1: are very apt. The guy just he's a magician. I
[53:58] Speaker 1: think again, they're going to be able to run it
[54:00] Speaker 1: like they did the first time around. I think they
[54:02] Speaker 1: need to put Gunner in more situations where he can create.
[54:05] Speaker 1: I think they'll find ways to do that, and I
[54:07] Speaker 1: think Georgia ends up winning this one. I think it's
[54:09] Speaker 1: like thirty one to twenty one. I got the dogs
[54:12] Speaker 1: coming out here as a SEC champs again.
[54:15] Speaker 2: Tin Foil Dan much better for the SEC of Alabama wins, right, Oh,
[54:20] Speaker 2: it definitely is Tinfoil Dan really loves Bama here. I
[54:25] Speaker 2: don't know if I am speaking as Tinfoil Dan in
[54:27] Speaker 2: this moment, but I don't know if weird calls are
[54:31] Speaker 2: going in George's favor in this one.
[54:33] Speaker 1: Oh man, you're really kicking a hornet's nest. There. I
[54:36] Speaker 1: like it. I'm all in favor of this.
[54:39] Speaker 2: I've just watched the SEC these past fifteen years, seventeen years,
[54:43] Speaker 2: twenty years, thirty years, forty however, many years of my life.
[54:46] Speaker 1: I mean late thirty, th ely forty.
[54:48] Speaker 2: Sure, Claire, I'm saying Tinfoil. Dan is on the record
[54:53] Speaker 2: now saying it's much better for the SEC, It's much
[54:58] Speaker 2: better for the sa CC's broadcast partners if Alabama wins
[55:03] Speaker 2: this game. And also George is like, I don't do
[55:06] Speaker 2: they how much do they care if they lose this game?
[55:08] Speaker 2: With regard to the playoff. Georgia always wants to win
[55:10] Speaker 2: the SEC, of course, but with regard to the playoff,
[55:13] Speaker 2: getting that five to six, getting a home game, it's
[55:16] Speaker 2: not the worst.
[55:17] Speaker 1: I mean right now, if they win, they're probably in
[55:19] Speaker 1: line for a first round by no I know.
[55:21] Speaker 2: But I'm saying, if you are the type that believes
[55:24] Speaker 2: getting that oh yeah, what is that opening weekend and
[55:27] Speaker 2: not and avoiding the buy, getting the five to twelve,
[55:30] Speaker 2: getting potentially Texas Tack who knows. And I don't know
[55:34] Speaker 2: if you want Texas Tech, but I'm saying, of your options.
[55:37] Speaker 1: I mean, there's a chance if you lose, you could
[55:40] Speaker 1: end up not hosting a game. There's a chance. I
[55:44] Speaker 1: don't think it's a good chance.
[55:45] Speaker 2: But if you think eleven and two, Georgia is falling
[55:49] Speaker 2: to the point where they're not in.
[55:51] Speaker 1: My fallow Oklahoma right now, Oklahoma is eight. It depends.
[55:56] Speaker 1: It depends how the committee feels about, you know, how
[56:00] Speaker 1: badly somebody like Georgia were to lose.
[56:03] Speaker 2: I mean, you could Georgia, just Georgia, just forersmall. They
[56:07] Speaker 2: beat a playoff team at Ole Miss.
[56:08] Speaker 1: I'm not saying this is likely, Dan, I'm just saying
[56:10] Speaker 1: there's I'm just it's polling you.
[56:13] Speaker 2: They stomped a Texas team that beat Oklahoma twenty three
[56:17] Speaker 2: to six.
[56:17] Speaker 1: I know, I listen, I know it's a difficults. You
[56:20] Speaker 1: want to be tinfoil Dan, I'll be tinfoil tie. It's possible, Okay, Okay,
[56:25] Speaker 1: go to eight pm. You got two games going on
[56:28] Speaker 1: side by side of hate when they do this, but whatever,
[56:30] Speaker 1: eight pm. ABC. Duke at seven and five squaring off
[56:35] Speaker 1: against Virginia at ten and two. They are three. I
[56:40] Speaker 1: got this right, A three and a half point favorite
[56:42] Speaker 1: against Duke Blue Devils. I think that's right. The AC
[56:45] Speaker 1: championship game. They played in Charlotte at Bank of America Stadium.
[56:49] Speaker 1: This is another rematch. Virginia won the first matchup thirty
[56:53] Speaker 1: four to seventeen. That game was not close. No, you
[56:56] Speaker 1: know how I talked about the BYU game is twenty
[56:58] Speaker 1: nine to seven. But I found ways looking add it
[57:00] Speaker 1: like I wasn't really that out of hand. This one
[57:02] Speaker 1: was out of hand. This game was a tire fire
[57:06] Speaker 1: for the Duke Blue Devils. Here is my issue with
[57:08] Speaker 1: this game. My issue with this game is that the
[57:13] Speaker 1: Duke template is simple and telegraphed, and anybody who watched
[57:16] Speaker 1: college football this year knows exactly what's coming. The only
[57:20] Speaker 1: way that they can beat a team like a Virginia
[57:22] Speaker 1: is if they get him into a shootout and they
[57:24] Speaker 1: outscore him. And that's it. That is how they have
[57:27] Speaker 1: played the best teams on their schedule. Full stop. Yeah,
[57:33] Speaker 1: full stop. Now go back and look at the first game.
[57:36] Speaker 1: Duke won the turnover battle, they won the penalty battle.
[57:40] Speaker 1: They were still outgained by almost three hundred yards. Virginia
[57:44] Speaker 1: still went twelve of nineteen on third downs. Duke was
[57:47] Speaker 1: just four or fifteen. So they are banking on getting
[57:51] Speaker 1: into shootouts, not banking on trying to stop yet all
[57:54] Speaker 1: on defense. You know, It's like how I play the
[57:56] Speaker 1: video game forget defense. We just got to try and
[58:00] Speaker 1: go out there and put up a ton of points
[58:01] Speaker 1: on the board and hope that we have the ball last.
[58:03] Speaker 1: That is a Duke philosophy so far this year.
[58:07] Speaker 2: They're all they're here on a weird technicality, right that basically, yeah,
[58:11] Speaker 2: a tie break, Yeah right, But I'm saying that even
[58:13] Speaker 2: the tie breaks, you know, conference to conference aren't the same.
[58:18] Speaker 2: So I think if we had this tie break, I
[58:20] Speaker 2: want to say in the American Miami would be in
[58:22] Speaker 2: because they default to the college football playoff ranking sooner
[58:26] Speaker 2: than how Duke got in the specific type break. Anyway,
[58:29] Speaker 2: it doesn't matter, we're here. The worst thing in this
[58:32] Speaker 2: game is Duke's defense. Yeah, they are somehow in this
[58:36] Speaker 2: game based on a somehow win over Clemson. Essentially that
[58:40] Speaker 2: could have gone either way. That was, you know, hanging
[58:42] Speaker 2: by a thread. I just think Virginia's better and more complete.
[58:47] Speaker 2: The thing that would scare me a little bit if
[58:50] Speaker 2: I'm a Virginia Fanduke seems to have the quarterback advantage,
[58:52] Speaker 2: which is not nothing, and Darien Mensa had a very
[58:54] Speaker 2: good year this year. He did Chanmo did as well.
[58:58] Speaker 1: But I don't know.
[58:59] Speaker 2: In a spot like this, I just think Virginia has
[59:01] Speaker 2: more ways to win, has the defense to get off
[59:03] Speaker 2: the field, and uh, I just don't think Duke does
[59:07] Speaker 2: this year. And so I'm just gonna I'm gonna air
[59:09] Speaker 2: on the side of that. I'm gonna go who's here.
[59:11] Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean, look, both quarterbacks have been a revelation.
[59:14] Speaker 1: Yeah they have. I mean Chaydler Morris. A lot of
[59:17] Speaker 1: the talk on the UVA front has been Chaydler Morris.
[59:19] Speaker 1: But I think lost in the shuffle is that UVA
[59:22] Speaker 1: actually has a top twenty five defense. Yes, they've had
[59:26] Speaker 1: a really solid defense this year. And you know, you
[59:28] Speaker 1: wouldn't look at you wouldn't know it to look at
[59:31] Speaker 1: the team and think of what they've been in the past,
[59:33] Speaker 1: but to actually go in and dig into the stats
[59:35] Speaker 1: and look, yeah, they're a top twenty five caliber defense.
[59:38] Speaker 1: I think they were twenty third. They finished twenty third
[59:41] Speaker 1: in the sp plus.
[59:42] Speaker 2: They finished twenty third, they were top fifteen and points
[59:45] Speaker 2: per drive allowed. And when you play a schedule that
[59:48] Speaker 2: includes offenses number ninety one one eighteen, ninety eight, one,
[59:52] Speaker 2: twenty five, eighty seven, eighty three and finish up with
[59:55] Speaker 2: the one hundred and eighth best offense in Virginia Tech.
[59:59] Speaker 1: How could you no? How could how could you not? Look?
[1:00:02] Speaker 1: They've they've been solid, however you grade it again, it's
[1:00:07] Speaker 1: been a great story. But the schedule is yeah, and
[1:00:10] Speaker 1: they have a really good pressure rate. You know, they're
[1:00:11] Speaker 1: good at getting after the quarterback. I think they're second
[1:00:14] Speaker 1: nationally in that capacity as well. So they've they've certainly
[1:00:17] Speaker 1: benefited from the easier schedule. They've definitely sp plus offenses,
[1:00:21] Speaker 1: to be clear. Plus they've definitely benefited from that. And
[1:00:25] Speaker 1: they definitely came out of left field this year getting
[1:00:28] Speaker 1: to the a SEC Championship game. But it's a solid team.
[1:00:30] Speaker 1: I like the Who's Yeah, So I'm of the mind
[1:00:33] Speaker 1: that is a very good team. I'm of the mind
[1:00:35] Speaker 1: that if they get to a playoff they will be competitive,
[1:00:37] Speaker 1: only they're gonna get blown off the field. And this
[1:00:39] Speaker 1: is a good team. I have no faith in the
[1:00:42] Speaker 1: Duke defense though in this one. None. And I think
[1:00:45] Speaker 1: I think Man's is going to get numbers. He's going
[1:00:47] Speaker 1: to put up stats. But uh, and maybe the game
[1:00:50] Speaker 1: will be closer. But I just have way more trust
[1:00:52] Speaker 1: in the balance that I know UVA has and has
[1:00:55] Speaker 1: shown on more than one occasion, on many occasions, this year,
[1:00:59] Speaker 1: I'm going to call it up to like thirty five
[1:01:03] Speaker 1: twenty four VIRGINI.
[1:01:05] Speaker 2: Okay, okay, fair enough. And by the way, to all
[1:01:08] Speaker 2: the Virginia haters who sang they can't get to double
[1:01:11] Speaker 2: digits against wake Forest.
[1:01:12] Speaker 1: I hear you.
[1:01:13] Speaker 2: They were right there. They were as close as you
[1:01:16] Speaker 2: can get to double digits against wake Forest. So I
[1:01:18] Speaker 2: won't hear any of it anymore. Continue, Let's go to
[1:01:22] Speaker 2: the Big Ten Championship.
[1:01:23] Speaker 1: This one's being played at the exact same time, Dan,
[1:01:26] Speaker 1: eight pm on Fox. It's gonna be Gus and Klatt.
[1:01:29] Speaker 1: It's gonna be twelve and oh number one Ohio State,
[1:01:33] Speaker 1: a four and a half point favorite, squaring off against
[1:01:35] Speaker 1: twelve and oh number two the Indiana Whoho Hoo's yours, Dan.
[1:01:39] Speaker 1: Usually when you've got a one versus a two, we
[1:01:42] Speaker 1: start seeing promos midweek for a game of the century. Correct.
[1:01:46] Speaker 1: I haven't seen those yet, have you?
[1:01:48] Speaker 2: Well, if you watch the Big Ten network, you probably would.
[1:01:52] Speaker 1: I mean, this is the biggest thing in the history
[1:01:54] Speaker 1: of the Big Ten network, a one versus a two
[1:01:55] Speaker 1: in the well, no, we've had that game.
[1:01:58] Speaker 2: Well, we've had one versus two like Michigan Ohio State games.
[1:02:01] Speaker 2: We had a top five to one last year right
[1:02:04] Speaker 2: in Oregon, Penn State.
[1:02:05] Speaker 1: We did. But this is like, you know, this is
[1:02:07] Speaker 1: the crown jewel of the season to be in the
[1:02:09] Speaker 1: conference title game.
[1:02:11] Speaker 2: Yeah, it hasn't been that much of a jewel of
[1:02:13] Speaker 2: a Big Ten season in terms of the big matchups
[1:02:16] Speaker 2: we didn't really get.
[1:02:19] Speaker 1: I mean, gus is going to have an outer body
[1:02:20] Speaker 1: experience with a one versus a two.
[1:02:23] Speaker 2: Sure, Okay, So this is what it comes down to
[1:02:26] Speaker 2: to me. Ohio State's playing in a big letdown spot.
[1:02:29] Speaker 2: Ohio State is playing in a big spot where they
[1:02:32] Speaker 2: don't necessarily view this as a huge moment of the
[1:02:36] Speaker 2: season even though they haven't won this game and haven't
[1:02:38] Speaker 2: won the conference in a minute, Ohio State is playing
[1:02:42] Speaker 2: very deliberately this year. They're playing slowly, and by deliberate,
[1:02:46] Speaker 2: I mean they're deliberately trying to pace themselves to peak
[1:02:50] Speaker 2: in January. It is early December at the moment. I'm
[1:02:53] Speaker 2: not saying they're not going to try to win this game.
[1:02:56] Speaker 2: I'm not saying that they're going to skip this game.
[1:02:58] Speaker 2: They're going to try very hard in this game. But
[1:03:00] Speaker 2: this game is not the point of Ohio State's journey,
[1:03:03] Speaker 2: Whereas I think there is more meaning behind this one
[1:03:06] Speaker 2: for Indiana just because of the degree of their journey
[1:03:11] Speaker 2: is more pronounced and more dramatic. Ohio State has not
[1:03:15] Speaker 2: played a team like Indiana, whereas Indiana has played against
[1:03:17] Speaker 2: Oregon this season. Right, right, So there's a certain amount
[1:03:21] Speaker 2: of self scouting that Indiana has had an advantage of.
[1:03:23] Speaker 2: And now Ohio State played Texas. I'm speaking more like
[1:03:26] Speaker 2: recency or in the Big Ten portion of their schedule,
[1:03:28] Speaker 2: And as mentioned earlier, Texas is built similarly to Ohio State.
[1:03:36] Speaker 2: I keep going back and forth in this one. I
[1:03:38] Speaker 2: kind of love that Indiana is an aggressive zone team.
[1:03:42] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I had that jotted down too, in that.
[1:03:45] Speaker 2: You're not gonna want to man up these receivers.
[1:03:48] Speaker 1: No.
[1:03:49] Speaker 2: No, I mean that teams who play a good zone
[1:03:51] Speaker 2: like Texas last season, like Michigan over the past few
[1:03:55] Speaker 2: years have been able to corral and limit.
[1:03:57] Speaker 1: I mean I jotted down here that they're seventh in
[1:04:00] Speaker 1: the nation in pressure rate. They're getting most of their
[1:04:04] Speaker 1: pressure without blitzing. They're one of the least blitz heavy
[1:04:06] Speaker 1: teams in all of college football. And they do play
[1:04:09] Speaker 1: the highest percentage of zone defense in the country yep,
[1:04:13] Speaker 1: which is exactly as you describe. You're not gonna be
[1:04:15] Speaker 1: able to man these guys up. We can't, So a
[1:04:17] Speaker 1: good zone defense is probably the recipe to go at
[1:04:20] Speaker 1: Ohio State.
[1:04:22] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that they're a year wiser from where
[1:04:25] Speaker 2: they were last season when they just could not protect
[1:04:28] Speaker 2: It was Curtis Roark when they couldn't protect him. He
[1:04:31] Speaker 2: was obviously playing injured, and it was just something they
[1:04:33] Speaker 2: could not account for in playing Ohio State last season.
[1:04:36] Speaker 2: It's a new Ohio State defense. It's a brutally, brutally
[1:04:39] Speaker 2: strong Ohio State defense this year as well. I went
[1:04:43] Speaker 2: back and forth in this one. Betting against Ohio State
[1:04:46] Speaker 2: has not been a great strategy. Indiana's played two close
[1:04:49] Speaker 2: games against a not so good Penn State team, a
[1:04:54] Speaker 2: decent Iowa team, and it was a close game against
[1:04:57] Speaker 2: Oregon as well, who has been very good. So they've
[1:04:59] Speaker 2: been battle tested and won those close games against quality opponents.
[1:05:02] Speaker 2: They just Ohio State's a different beast, and so I'm
[1:05:07] Speaker 2: almost I'm just gonna be the engineer on the underthink
[1:05:10] Speaker 2: express here. I think Ohio State is likelier to win
[1:05:16] Speaker 2: because they've just there's an inevitability to Ohio State that
[1:05:20] Speaker 2: I haven't felt exactly with Indiana. And I think Indiana
[1:05:23] Speaker 2: has been crazy impressive this year. But it's something about
[1:05:27] Speaker 2: the depth, it's something about the defense, it's something about
[1:05:30] Speaker 2: the not playing close games since that Texas game, and
[1:05:33] Speaker 2: their schedule hasn't been great, and that's a large reason
[1:05:35] Speaker 2: for it that I just think Ohio State wins this
[1:05:38] Speaker 2: game by a touchdown. I think it's a close game.
[1:05:41] Speaker 1: I think it could be.
[1:05:42] Speaker 2: I think it could be Indiana winning by three going
[1:05:44] Speaker 2: into the fourth quarter. Again, it's that inevitability of Ohio
[1:05:47] Speaker 2: State that there are just too many players that I
[1:05:51] Speaker 2: think you're gonna come away from this game thinking these
[1:05:54] Speaker 2: are two teams on equal footing. But again, inevitability twenty
[1:05:58] Speaker 2: seven to twenty Ohio State.
[1:06:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I was trying to parse this one out,
[1:06:05] Speaker 1: and I'm with you. I was going back and forth too, yep.
[1:06:08] Speaker 1: And something that kept bouncing around of my head is
[1:06:12] Speaker 1: this is year two now for Kurt Signetti, and I
[1:06:16] Speaker 1: still feel like people and I'll include myself in this.
[1:06:21] Speaker 1: There is something of a mental block when it comes
[1:06:23] Speaker 1: to taking Indianas seriously. And it's not fair to Indiana
[1:06:27] Speaker 1: because Indiana has been incredible these last two seasons. But
[1:06:30] Speaker 1: it's just the new problem at this point. Well it
[1:06:32] Speaker 1: might be yeah, but I probably speak for some other
[1:06:35] Speaker 1: people out there where it's like, wow, I still kind
[1:06:38] Speaker 1: of can't believe that they have come this farthest quickly
[1:06:40] Speaker 1: under Kurt Signetti. But the numbers are mind blowing. You know,
[1:06:45] Speaker 1: this is not smoking mirrors. It's not even a Cinderella
[1:06:48] Speaker 1: story at this point. This team absolutely could beat Ohio State.
[1:06:53] Speaker 1: This This team could win the national championship definitely, you know,
[1:06:57] Speaker 1: and I don't really have It's not that hard of
[1:06:59] Speaker 1: a cell to make that case. They're really freaking good.
[1:07:03] Speaker 1: So we talked about the matchup. On defense, they get
[1:07:06] Speaker 1: pressure without blitzing. They play a lot of zone. If
[1:07:08] Speaker 1: you're gonna play against this version of Ohio State with
[1:07:11] Speaker 1: all those weapons out wide, you can't man Jeremiah Smith up.
[1:07:14] Speaker 1: You're gonna have to have a good zone defense. That's
[1:07:16] Speaker 1: what Indiana is. So that I think works to their favor.
[1:07:20] Speaker 1: To me, I felt like this is a crap shoot.
[1:07:22] Speaker 1: I think this is gonna be a good game. I
[1:07:24] Speaker 1: think you can make the case that Indiana is more
[1:07:26] Speaker 1: battle tested coming into this one. Where I really had
[1:07:30] Speaker 1: trouble though, is I figure this is a Jimmy's and
[1:07:34] Speaker 1: Joe's situation, right, you know. And even though Indiana is
[1:07:38] Speaker 1: I think better and more talented than they were a
[1:07:41] Speaker 1: year ago, I still think Ohio State is way better.
[1:07:44] Speaker 2: It is a letdown spot. It is a let downpot,
[1:07:49] Speaker 2: it is indeed, but Ohio State is just so damn deep.
[1:07:53] Speaker 2: Second straight game away from home.
[1:07:55] Speaker 1: It's just like the weak spots for Ohio State this year.
[1:07:59] Speaker 1: We're supposed to be what a green quarterback, first time
[1:08:03] Speaker 1: full time starter and Julian saying who may win the
[1:08:07] Speaker 1: high Spin? I don't know sure, but Indiana's guy might
[1:08:09] Speaker 1: win the hugsmand two Indiana's guy might he might win
[1:08:12] Speaker 1: the Hidsman two. Fernana Mendoz has been great. What else
[1:08:14] Speaker 1: is it supposed to be? The lack of a proven
[1:08:16] Speaker 1: ground game, which was very much the case for a
[1:08:18] Speaker 1: good chunk of the year, but they have brought that
[1:08:19] Speaker 1: along very slowly. Sure certainly there were no questions out
[1:08:23] Speaker 1: why their work. I think some questions on defense, like, Okay,
[1:08:25] Speaker 1: they've lost some guys, but how are they going to
[1:08:27] Speaker 1: They've been ridiculous on that side of the ball. I
[1:08:30] Speaker 1: think Ohio State has done everything within its power to
[1:08:33] Speaker 1: answer some of those questions we had in the preseason.
[1:08:36] Speaker 1: So from my standpoint, I think these teams are very close.
[1:08:41] Speaker 1: I expect Indiana trying to slow this one down to
[1:08:44] Speaker 1: keep the Ohio State offense off the field. I'm curious
[1:08:48] Speaker 1: to see what happens if Ohio State takes away the
[1:08:50] Speaker 1: Indiana ground game. So they're good enough to do it,
[1:08:54] Speaker 1: and I want to know can Fernando Mendoza go out
[1:08:56] Speaker 1: there and pull off a magic act the way he
[1:08:59] Speaker 1: did against Penn State. Can he win the game for them?
[1:09:04] Speaker 1: Because I think Ohio State is going to try to
[1:09:06] Speaker 1: make him win the game for Indiana.
[1:09:09] Speaker 2: Sure, man, got it at myself into Indiana.
[1:09:14] Speaker 1: I've got at twenty eight to twenty four Ohio State,
[1:09:17] Speaker 1: So I guess that means I've got Indiana covering. Yeah.
[1:09:20] Speaker 1: But I think this is gonna be a hell of
[1:09:21] Speaker 1: a game. Yeah, I really do. I'm excited about this one.
[1:09:26] Speaker 2: Okay, So the reason it's not as much of a
[1:09:28] Speaker 2: letdown moment is because Ohio State either way, is going
[1:09:31] Speaker 2: to be off for a while after this game. Yeah,
[1:09:33] Speaker 2: So it's not like they're looking forward. It's obviously not
[1:09:36] Speaker 2: a look ahead. And I think, you know, the clean
[1:09:41] Speaker 2: track no weather playing indoors probably favors slightly Ohio State. Yeah,
[1:09:48] Speaker 2: I just I think I'm going with once again the inevitability.
[1:09:52] Speaker 1: And you know, I hear you on the letdown front,
[1:09:55] Speaker 1: and I know it's all very unscientific, but like if
[1:09:58] Speaker 1: that game we're close again as Michigan, it were close
[1:10:02] Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter and it was a real emotional
[1:10:04] Speaker 1: type thing, that would be different. That game was over.
[1:10:09] Speaker 1: That game was over for a while. So I'm not
[1:10:13] Speaker 1: banking as much on that as I would otherwise. I
[1:10:16] Speaker 1: got Ohio State winning twenty eight twenty four. But I
[1:10:19] Speaker 1: think it's a good game. And I think we will
[1:10:21] Speaker 1: be hearing a lot from Indiana in the playoff because
[1:10:24] Speaker 1: they will be in the playoffs, all right, Headliner, you
[1:10:28] Speaker 1: and LV Boise You and LV Boise State. They played
[1:10:32] Speaker 1: this one eight pm on Fox on Friday night. Yeah,
[1:10:35] Speaker 1: UNLV ten and two Boise State eight and four. These
[1:10:38] Speaker 1: two teams got to the Mountain West because they had
[1:10:41] Speaker 1: like a tiebreaker thing that involved Bilconnelly's sp plus at
[1:10:45] Speaker 1: Sports Source Analytics and god knows whatever else. Yeah, there
[1:10:49] Speaker 1: were four teams that had an opportunity to get in.
[1:10:51] Speaker 1: These are the two that made it. This is also
[1:10:53] Speaker 1: a rematch. Boise State won the first matchup fifty six
[1:10:56] Speaker 1: to thirty one. Notably, Maddox Madson is coming back for
[1:10:59] Speaker 1: this game. He's missed some time with a lower leg injury.
[1:11:02] Speaker 1: He is going to be back out there. Boise State
[1:11:06] Speaker 1: has lost four times this season. They've lost to the
[1:11:09] Speaker 1: four best defenses they've played. UNLV is certainly not one
[1:11:12] Speaker 1: of those defenses, not at all. And I think that's
[1:11:16] Speaker 1: why you picked Boise State the first time around when
[1:11:19] Speaker 1: we talked about this game way back. When are you
[1:11:22] Speaker 1: still feeling as confident because of that disparity or are
[1:11:26] Speaker 1: you going to change your tune now because UNLV's had
[1:11:30] Speaker 1: a really good year. Where are you at?
[1:11:33] Speaker 2: I mean, they should have lost at Utah State. There
[1:11:35] Speaker 2: was a good chance they lose Boise That does last week,
[1:11:38] Speaker 2: so Boise a little bit healthier. Boise has not scored
[1:11:41] Speaker 2: more points than they did against UNLV a few weeks ago.
[1:11:45] Speaker 2: They scored fifty six. They haven't scored more than that,
[1:11:48] Speaker 2: no at all this year. They allowed thirty one. I
[1:11:51] Speaker 2: just think at home getting healthier and Boise just they
[1:11:57] Speaker 2: don't have much beyond this defense. But if they're getting
[1:11:59] Speaker 2: Max Matt's at Maddox Madson back, we'll see, you know
[1:12:03] Speaker 2: how healthy he is. But I just again, I'm going
[1:12:05] Speaker 2: to pick the home team with the defense that wins
[1:12:09] Speaker 2: this game. That was in the playoff last season. They
[1:12:13] Speaker 2: don't have the pop on offense. I mean, how could
[1:12:15] Speaker 2: you win you lose Ashton genty But even still, there's
[1:12:18] Speaker 2: enough talent there for them to score here. So I
[1:12:21] Speaker 2: have this at I don't know, thirty seven to twenty three.
[1:12:26] Speaker 1: I'm going to go UNLV again. What the hell I
[1:12:28] Speaker 1: went with him the first time. I was way wrong.
[1:12:30] Speaker 1: I'll do it again. I like this team, I like
[1:12:33] Speaker 1: the coach. You know, I'm big on Anthony Calandria. Yep,
[1:12:36] Speaker 1: he's had a pretty good year. Who knows, maybe there'll
[1:12:39] Speaker 1: be some RUSS for Maddix Matson. They are a four
[1:12:41] Speaker 1: point home favorite, but I'm gonna go UNLV APM just
[1:12:45] Speaker 1: on Fox on Friday. We have a couple other games
[1:12:48] Speaker 1: on Friday here to get through. The big one, of course,
[1:12:50] Speaker 1: is another one at ABC. This is the American Championship
[1:12:54] Speaker 1: between North Texas at eleven and one and to Lane
[1:12:57] Speaker 1: at ten and two. This will be the first CONFID
[1:13:00] Speaker 1: French Championship game between two teams with the parting coaches
[1:13:04] Speaker 1: since the twenty twelve MAC Championship between Northern Illinois and
[1:13:08] Speaker 1: Kent State Dan Rumistein. Just in case you're interested in
[1:13:10] Speaker 1: knowing that nice okay, North Texas favored by two and
[1:13:15] Speaker 1: a half points. It appears as if the winner of
[1:13:18] Speaker 1: this game is likely to get into that field of
[1:13:22] Speaker 1: twelve as the G five representative now Duke were to win.
[1:13:27] Speaker 1: If Duke were to win, then that I think opens
[1:13:29] Speaker 1: up the possibility of somebody like a JMU getting into
[1:13:34] Speaker 1: the field. Maybe UNLV if people feel really great about
[1:13:37] Speaker 1: UNLV though they're not ranked in the latest batch of
[1:13:40] Speaker 1: playoff rankings. Likely it would be James Madison who will
[1:13:43] Speaker 1: talk about next. So you know this game is going
[1:13:46] Speaker 1: to be watched I think by a lot of people.
[1:13:48] Speaker 1: This is like the premier event on Friday night with
[1:13:51] Speaker 1: respect to college football in these conference championship games.
[1:13:54] Speaker 2: So you got or there's small print that starts with
[1:13:57] Speaker 2: at the discretion of and gets Notre Dame in out
[1:14:01] Speaker 2: of nowhere sure instead of a conference champion.
[1:14:06] Speaker 1: I think I like North Texas here. I think there
[1:14:10] Speaker 1: is a.
[1:14:10] Speaker 2: Little bit more winning in their DNA. I really like Tulane.
[1:14:15] Speaker 2: I worry about the specific like I don't like Tulane's
[1:14:18] Speaker 2: offensive line, no, And I just think the best thing
[1:14:21] Speaker 2: in this game is North Texas on offense, even though
[1:14:24] Speaker 2: I've just like over and over again, say I trust
[1:14:26] Speaker 2: the defense more. And this is what North Texas on
[1:14:29] Speaker 2: the road in New Orleans is not a long road trip,
[1:14:32] Speaker 2: but it is on the road. I think I trust
[1:14:34] Speaker 2: the North Texas offense more than anything in this game.
[1:14:38] Speaker 2: And Tulane not really being able to run the ball
[1:14:40] Speaker 2: that well, and you know, protecting Jake Rhetz, Like I
[1:14:44] Speaker 2: just I think I'm going mean green here to just
[1:14:46] Speaker 2: keep up that electricity, and I have them as dogs
[1:14:50] Speaker 2: winning this one.
[1:14:51] Speaker 1: I'm in on North Texas too. These teams are very
[1:14:55] Speaker 1: comparable defenses, but North Texas's offense is significant better. Yeah,
[1:15:01] Speaker 1: first in the sp plus right now, so they've been
[1:15:04] Speaker 1: very very good. Eric Morris got hired by Oklahoma State.
[1:15:07] Speaker 1: Drew Mastemaker has been incredible. There's such a good passing team,
[1:15:12] Speaker 1: and that to me is a matchup that I think
[1:15:13] Speaker 1: benefits them. TWU Lane is not great against the pass.
[1:15:16] Speaker 1: They have struggled against it all season. I think Drew
[1:15:19] Speaker 1: Messmaker is a great game. I think they're going to
[1:15:21] Speaker 1: find a way to get out ahead and then insult
[1:15:24] Speaker 1: the game away With Caleb Hawkins, they're running back, who,
[1:15:26] Speaker 1: by the way, we don't talk about as much, but
[1:15:28] Speaker 1: twelve hundred yards twenty three touchdowns on the year. He's
[1:15:32] Speaker 1: had a crazy good year. So like that to me
[1:15:37] Speaker 1: is the way this one goes. I've got it at
[1:15:38] Speaker 1: like thirty eight twenty seven. I will say the path
[1:15:41] Speaker 1: for TWU Lane is probably really ugly and it requires
[1:15:46] Speaker 1: Jake Retz left to get going on the ground. Yeah,
[1:15:49] Speaker 1: but North Texas has been very sound as a passing defense.
[1:15:53] Speaker 1: A running quarterback might be able to pull them apart,
[1:15:55] Speaker 1: might be able to open up some holes in that
[1:15:57] Speaker 1: passing defense. I think that's two Lane's best chance if
[1:16:00] Speaker 1: they want to control this game and control the tempo here,
[1:16:03] Speaker 1: I think North Texas is better. So again, thirty eight
[1:16:05] Speaker 1: twenty seven for.
[1:16:06] Speaker 2: Me, Tulane, by the way, if you're talking about ball control.
[1:16:09] Speaker 2: Tulane is below average at avoiding three and out on offense,
[1:16:15] Speaker 2: seventy fifth nationally, and they're decent on third downs. They're
[1:16:19] Speaker 2: just not incredible on third downs with the ball. So
[1:16:23] Speaker 2: if they need to possess, they need to be a
[1:16:26] Speaker 2: little bit better than what they've shown this year. Three
[1:16:28] Speaker 2: other games this week, Dan, let's get through them. Set PMSPN.
[1:16:32] Speaker 2: This one's for the Sun Belt.
[1:16:34] Speaker 1: It is Troy at eight and four. It is JMU
[1:16:36] Speaker 1: the James Madison Dukes at eleven and one. They are
[1:16:40] Speaker 1: the biggest favorite this weekend, a twenty three and one
[1:16:43] Speaker 1: half point favorite over the Troy Trojans. Speaking of the
[1:16:47] Speaker 1: Troy Trojans, let me give some credit to my guy,
[1:16:50] Speaker 1: Jared Parker, my dude.
[1:16:54] Speaker 2: Yep, offensive background, Troy must be amazing on offense, right.
[1:17:00] Speaker 1: I want to credit him for getting Troy back to
[1:17:01] Speaker 1: this game because it's a proud program. They've had a
[1:17:04] Speaker 1: lot of success down there. It was a rough go
[1:17:07] Speaker 1: for him last season, and I think we called it
[1:17:09] Speaker 1: out in the preseason that it wasn't like entirely his fault.
[1:17:13] Speaker 1: Some of those results from a year ago were skewed.
[1:17:17] Speaker 1: I think what they've done this year is a very
[1:17:19] Speaker 1: big deal and it proves that maybe he actually is
[1:17:22] Speaker 1: good at this thing, So kudos to him. James Madison's better.
[1:17:27] Speaker 1: James Madison's going to try to put up one hundred
[1:17:29] Speaker 1: if at all possible. If I were willing to do
[1:17:32] Speaker 1: a lock again, and I'm not sure I can do
[1:17:34] Speaker 1: that this season. I need to wait a year let
[1:17:37] Speaker 1: things cool down. But if I were to do a lock,
[1:17:40] Speaker 1: I would inquire about JMU here because I think they're
[1:17:43] Speaker 1: just going to go for broke. Same so I don't
[1:17:47] Speaker 1: really even have a final score jotted down. I just
[1:17:49] Speaker 1: think jmu is going to run it up as high
[1:17:50] Speaker 1: as they can. Yeah, I have forty two to seventeen. Also,
[1:17:54] Speaker 1: at seven pm on Friday, CBA Sports Network Conference to
[1:17:57] Speaker 1: USA Canesaw State Baby M nine to three, two and
[1:18:02] Speaker 1: a half point road favorite on the road at Jacksonville State.
[1:18:05] Speaker 1: They played earlier in the year. Jack State won thirty
[1:18:08] Speaker 1: five to twenty six. For me, battle in the trenches.
[1:18:12] Speaker 1: This is a battle in the trenches. If Kennesaw can
[1:18:15] Speaker 1: stop them on the ground, I think they're winning this game.
[1:18:18] Speaker 1: The first game was high scoring, there were a lot
[1:18:20] Speaker 1: of stats. They gave up two hundred and fifty two
[1:18:23] Speaker 1: yards to Jacksonville State on the ground. So if you
[1:18:26] Speaker 1: can come in somewhere under that and still have the
[1:18:29] Speaker 1: amount of offensive output you had the first time around,
[1:18:31] Speaker 1: I think they're going to win Conference USA in only
[1:18:35] Speaker 1: their second year as an FBS program, which is wild,
[1:18:38] Speaker 1: wild considering the fact that they got rid of the
[1:18:40] Speaker 1: coach a year ago and it was there's a lot
[1:18:42] Speaker 1: of you know, chatter about that, and Jerry Mack has
[1:18:46] Speaker 1: come in and done a really really good job with
[1:18:47] Speaker 1: this team. So I am in on Kannesaugh here as
[1:18:51] Speaker 1: am I.
[1:18:52] Speaker 2: There's a very specific exploit in that Kennesaw has popped
[1:18:56] Speaker 2: deep balls really well and Jacksonville State hasn't been great
[1:19:00] Speaker 2: defensively and allowing those big plays. I want to say
[1:19:03] Speaker 2: Kennis opened up as a dog in this one and
[1:19:05] Speaker 2: yet shifted over to a favorite. So yeah, I'm taking
[1:19:09] Speaker 2: owls hell, I'm buying in on the story.
[1:19:12] Speaker 1: And finally, let's go ahead in time if we can
[1:19:15] Speaker 1: back to Saturday Place high noon, Miami, Ohio squaring off
[1:19:19] Speaker 1: against Western Michigan. Western Michigan favored by two and a
[1:19:23] Speaker 1: half points. This one's for the Mac they played earlier
[1:19:26] Speaker 1: in the year Miami won by a twenty six to
[1:19:29] Speaker 1: seventeen margin. This is going to be a rock fight.
[1:19:33] Speaker 1: This rock fight written all over it. Too bad offenses,
[1:19:38] Speaker 1: two good defenses. I'm going to go Western to win
[1:19:40] Speaker 1: in the rematch here and take home the Mac. Yeah.
[1:19:43] Speaker 2: The difference though, is d Kwan Finn is no longer
[1:19:46] Speaker 2: playing for Miami. Correct, and so he did play. He
[1:19:48] Speaker 2: did have a good game in that first matchup, in
[1:19:51] Speaker 2: that winning efforts, and so they've figured it out, it
[1:19:54] Speaker 2: seems behind the scenes at quarterback. Since then, they've played
[1:19:57] Speaker 2: a couple different guys. Michigan's had a really nice year.
[1:20:01] Speaker 2: The game is at Western Michigan. I just I struggle
[1:20:07] Speaker 2: to bet against Chuck Martin in the spot hasn't always
[1:20:09] Speaker 2: won it.
[1:20:09] Speaker 1: I know, I know, I know.
[1:20:12] Speaker 2: I'm going to Miami of Ohio here on the road,
[1:20:14] Speaker 2: I think the defense travels.
[1:20:16] Speaker 1: So look head on out toi verballers dot com. Sign

[1:21:18] Speaker 1: all of these games. We're gonna have some games coming
[1:21:19] Speaker 1: up here in Bowl season before long. So if nothing more,
[1:21:23] Speaker 1: you get to support what Dan and I do.
[1:21:25] Speaker 2: You know what, maybe we'll create a tinfoil Discord channel. Sure, oh,
[1:21:30] Speaker 2: just for people to float like, Hey, guys, I know
[1:21:34] Speaker 2: this might sound a little bit looney, but oh, I mean,
[1:21:37] Speaker 2: I'm just making sure I'm gonna spend so much time
[1:21:40] Speaker 2: in there.
[1:21:41] Speaker 1: I love that idea. Correct to be clear, only about
[1:21:44] Speaker 1: college football, only about collge FOOTBA Yeah, yea, yeah, yea, yeah,
[1:21:47] Speaker 1: we can start the separate UFO Channe. I'll be in
[1:21:49] Speaker 1: there too, but okay, glad to hear it. But tinfoil Dan,
[1:21:52] Speaker 1: tinfoil tie and college football, since we can spin that up. Yeah,
[1:21:56] Speaker 1: love to hear it. I believe those are all the
[1:21:59] Speaker 1: games we have to talk about, Dan.
[1:22:01] Speaker 2: Are we going live for any of these? We're doing
[1:22:02] Speaker 2: an altcast. We haven't discussed it specifically.
[1:22:05] Speaker 1: We haven't discussed it specifically. What I would say is
[1:22:09] Speaker 1: you and I are gonna probably hop on for a
[1:22:13] Speaker 1: live stream at some point later in the day on Sunday. Yeah,
[1:22:18] Speaker 1: we're going to take that opportunity. We'll allow the playoff
[1:22:22] Speaker 1: rankings and pairings to marinate a little bit, and we'll
[1:22:26] Speaker 1: set a time later in the day. I don't know
[1:22:28] Speaker 1: what your Sunday afternoon looks like. You and I can talk.
[1:22:30] Speaker 2: I cleared the calendar.
[1:22:32] Speaker 1: You want to go like five pm on Sunday, We
[1:22:35] Speaker 1: can do that five pm Eastern, five pm Eastern on
[1:22:38] Speaker 1: Sunday out on the YouTube channel. Yeah, we will talk through.
[1:22:41] Speaker 1: We'll do kind of an abbreviated episode just talking through
[1:22:45] Speaker 1: playoff stuff. Part one will be Saturday night, where we
[1:22:49] Speaker 1: recap all the action in the conference championship games. We
[1:22:52] Speaker 1: will obviously have to reference some of the playoff implications.
[1:22:56] Speaker 1: But part two, where we talk more about it, we
[1:22:59] Speaker 1: will do that live on Sunday evening, five pm Eastern
[1:23:02] Speaker 1: time out on the YouTube channel. If you want to
[1:23:04] Speaker 1: tune in live, you're more than welcome to do so.
[1:23:06] Speaker 1: We will also drop that one to the Patreon and
[1:23:10] Speaker 1: public feed shortly thereafter so that everybody has access.
[1:23:13] Speaker 2: So you didn't answer my question, though, What was the
[1:23:15] Speaker 2: question again? Do you want to do an alt cast?
[1:23:17] Speaker 2: Do you want to do a watch along? I mean sure,
[1:23:20] Speaker 2: I'm down. Now. Do you think you have what it
[1:23:23] Speaker 2: takes to do an Ohio State Indiana watch along at
[1:23:27] Speaker 2: eight pm Eastern, shut it down at the end of
[1:23:29] Speaker 2: the game, and then immediately go live once again.
[1:23:33] Speaker 1: I could pour the recap. I could do that.
[1:23:35] Speaker 2: I think we should. I think we should just we
[1:23:37] Speaker 2: should not log off. We should wear diapers.
[1:23:39] Speaker 1: And just go for it. Just go for it. Just
[1:23:41] Speaker 1: go like we're NASCAR drivers, right, We're just gonnaea. We
[1:23:44] Speaker 1: need the helmet with like the little water straw. Yeah,
[1:23:47] Speaker 1: some sort of situation for you know, a situation.
[1:23:51] Speaker 2: Sure, dator eight bottle baby.
[1:23:53] Speaker 1: All right, So now we got a bunch going on
[1:23:55] Speaker 1: this weekend. We've got the alt cast eight pm Eastern
[1:23:58] Speaker 1: time we were in the big game. Then we've got
[1:24:02] Speaker 1: our midnight live stream where we're gonna recap all the action,
[1:24:07] Speaker 1: and then we're gonna go to bed late, gonna wake
[1:24:10] Speaker 1: up early. We're gonna watch the results, give ourselves a
[1:24:13] Speaker 1: little bit of a chance to like, shower and need
[1:24:15] Speaker 1: whatever you do, disagree stream.
[1:24:19] Speaker 2: The live stream starts at midnight Eastern and concludes the
[1:24:23] Speaker 2: next day at six pm.
[1:24:25] Speaker 1: Right, we're going full justin TV with this, and uh
[1:24:30] Speaker 1: we will then do yes the playoff reaction special. I
[1:24:33] Speaker 1: got pull ups around this house somewhere. Yeah, I have
[1:24:37] Speaker 1: like four year old but yeah, Dan, if I could,
[1:24:43] Speaker 1: I would like to ask myself to drop that big
[1:24:46] Speaker 1: throbbing thrusting, thoughtful.
[1:24:53] Speaker 2: Thrusting by shaking.
[1:25:00] Speaker 1: Shake in. We have one pat League game. Lehigh was
[1:25:05] Speaker 1: on by last week they were awaiting the winner of
[1:25:07] Speaker 1: Villanova and Hobbard h twelve pm Eastern Times Saturday, ESPN
[1:25:14] Speaker 1: plus Villanova ten and two squaring off at Murray H.
[1:25:18] Speaker 1: Goodman Stadium against the Lehigh Mountain Hawks, who were twelve
[1:25:21] Speaker 1: and zero and four and one half point favorites in
[1:25:26] Speaker 1: the second round of the FCS playoffs. I believe the
[1:25:29] Speaker 1: winner probably plays Tarleton. I have not seen who Tarleton
[1:25:33] Speaker 1: is squaring off against on the other side of the bracket.
[1:25:35] Speaker 1: Lehigh got screwed. They should have been the four instead
[1:25:38] Speaker 1: of the five. Okay, so we're gonna be rooting against
[1:25:41] Speaker 1: Tarleton on the other side to get another home game
[1:25:43] Speaker 1: here in the valley. But Mountain Hawks, how do we
[1:25:48] Speaker 1: feel here? It's a nooner. It is a nooner.
[1:25:52] Speaker 2: How's the weather going to be?
[1:25:53] Speaker 1: I think it's gonna be high risk, It's going to
[1:25:55] Speaker 1: be very brisk. I saw that there's a front blowing
[1:25:57] Speaker 1: through like Friday nights going down to the lower teens
[1:26:01] Speaker 1: or something. It's gonna be cold.
[1:26:03] Speaker 2: Will Lee High be distracted by Kevin Cahill's move to
[1:26:06] Speaker 2: Penn State? You laugh time I know he has zoomed
[1:26:12] Speaker 2: up the candidate list. My god, if pack Craft has
[1:26:16] Speaker 2: a list of fifty dudes, Kevin k Hill's on.
[1:26:19] Speaker 1: It, Penn State's gonna make a trade. They're gonna trade
[1:26:22] Speaker 1: Pat Kraft to Lehigh for Kevin k Hill. Fine, great,
[1:26:26] Speaker 1: straight everybody wins straight up. I'm on lee High here.
[1:26:33] Speaker 2: It They're not in my blood, but they're blood adjacent.
