In this episode, we each picked eight transfers — four on offense, four on defense, one quarterback max — that we find most interesting heading into the 2026 season. Why these guys? It comes down to situation, scheme fit, prior production, and in some cases, just a gut feeling that something's about to click at the next stop. We get into the players following their coaches to new destinations, the quarterback pickups nobody saw coming, the edge rushers changing conferences, and the linebackers ready to take over defenses. The big themes keep coming up: how much does coaching familiarity actually matter, can G5 numbers translate to a Power 4 schedule, and what happens when a proven producer lands in a more stable situation? [0:04] Speaker 2: I'll ah for me.
[0:06] Speaker 1: I'm a man, I'm forty.
[0:08] Speaker 2: I've heard so many players say, well, I want to
[0:10] Speaker 2: be happy.
[0:10] Speaker 1: You want to be happy for day?
[0:12] Speaker 2: Edith Steak is that whoo whoom?
[0:14] Speaker 1: And Dan and Tie.
[0:18] Speaker 3: Welcome back to the show one and all. That guy
[0:22] Speaker 3: out there is Dan Rubinstein. I am Ty hilden Brand.
[0:25] Speaker 3: It is a pleasure to be with.
[0:27] Speaker 1: You all as always, including you Dan. Yes, you two.
[0:31] Speaker 1: How are you?
[0:32] Speaker 2: I'm good. I started the day off early. It was
[0:34] Speaker 2: a productive morning. Tie. I got a sweat in on
[0:37] Speaker 2: the bike down here, which was nice, watch some deeply
[0:41] Speaker 2: nerdy videos about getting better at tennis, and just little
[0:45] Speaker 2: things I can do. Tie baked a loaf of sourdough.
[0:48] Speaker 2: I would say a B plus a minus. Batard to
[0:52] Speaker 2: send me the picture.
[0:52] Speaker 1: It looked beautiful.
[0:53] Speaker 2: It's pretty good. I'm pretty happy with it. I'm gonna
[0:55] Speaker 2: cut open uh the loaf probably after we record here
[0:59] Speaker 2: for some lunch and uh. Look a successful morning so far, Tie,
[1:03] Speaker 2: I hope it continues beautiful.
[1:05] Speaker 3: Well, it is a pleasure to be back with you
[1:07] Speaker 3: as always. For those newcomers, hit follow or subscribes that
[1:11] Speaker 3: you don't miss any of our episodes. Verballers dot com
[1:15] Speaker 3: is where you can go if you want all these
[1:17] Speaker 3: episodes without the ads. A little bit early, you get
[1:19] Speaker 3: access to discord be part of our community if you
[1:22] Speaker 3: are ever so inclined. On today's episode, though, we are
[1:26] Speaker 3: talking transfers, Dan. Indeed, transfers are sort of the name
[1:30] Speaker 3: of the game nowadays. It's really difficult at this point
[1:37] Speaker 3: in time, mid March, trying to go through these transfers
[1:41] Speaker 3: and figure out who is gonna pop and who isn't
[1:44] Speaker 3: gonna pop. There is nobody out there who knows that
[1:47] Speaker 3: for certain. But what we can do at this point
[1:50] Speaker 3: in the off season is adamittum. We can look at
[1:54] Speaker 3: the list of guys who transferred over from one place
[1:56] Speaker 3: to another, and we can pull out the guys that
[1:59] Speaker 3: we are interesting in and we can talk through why.
[2:02] Speaker 3: So I put the call out to arverballer hood on
[2:05] Speaker 3: Patreon at forbawlers dot com. I got some suggestions from
[2:08] Speaker 3: the community which we can get into as we get
[2:11] Speaker 3: a little bit deeper into this. But you and I
[2:14] Speaker 3: have in effect picked transfer teams. So what that entails
[2:19] Speaker 3: is we have four guys on offense, four guys on defense.
[2:22] Speaker 3: You can only pick one quarterback per side, correct, because
[2:25] Speaker 3: you could fill up, you know, eight man rosters just
[2:28] Speaker 3: with quarterbacks if you were really interested in doing so, but.
[2:31] Speaker 1: We didn't want to do that.
[2:32] Speaker 3: We had a bunch of quarterback suggestions that came in
[2:35] Speaker 3: in the comment thread, which we can again talk about
[2:37] Speaker 3: a little bit later on. But we each have eight
[2:39] Speaker 3: different guys that we want to talk through that we're
[2:41] Speaker 3: interested in for one reason or another.
[2:43] Speaker 1: Is that right? Is that track with you? Yes?
[2:45] Speaker 2: Yes, And it's an interesting topic just because when you're
[2:50] Speaker 2: looking at guys who are obviously or at least potentially
[2:54] Speaker 2: high impact type transfers certain positions, whether it's counting numbers
[2:59] Speaker 2: or number of number of snaps played or pressures, or
[3:05] Speaker 2: in a limited sample size, they seem to be impactful
[3:09] Speaker 2: and terrific and are looking for more of a big
[3:11] Speaker 2: role certain positions. You're like, I could see how this guy,
[3:14] Speaker 2: based on his production as a backup, or based on
[3:17] Speaker 2: what he was able to do at a starter at
[3:19] Speaker 2: a smaller place, that he was able to shine when
[3:22] Speaker 2: everybody was paying attention to him. If you were a receiver,
[3:24] Speaker 2: a corner or something like that, that that's a good
[3:28] Speaker 2: thing moving forward, that he's probably going to keep doing
[3:31] Speaker 2: so at his next place, no matter how big that place.
[3:34] Speaker 2: And then some transfers are either positioned dependent like a
[3:38] Speaker 2: running back that puts up huge numbers. I'll spoil one
[3:41] Speaker 2: of mine right now. In Caleb Hawkins, we're like, he
[3:43] Speaker 2: has a really good running back, but also the North
[3:46] Speaker 2: Texas offensive line seemed to be pretty good. The competition
[3:50] Speaker 2: was what it was, for better or for worse, and
[3:52] Speaker 2: he's entering into a situation where like, who knows what
[3:55] Speaker 2: the hell the offensive line at Oklahoma State's gonna look
[3:58] Speaker 2: like with the transfers they're bringing in, and I like
[4:02] Speaker 2: to sort of sort out the uh, the maybe's from
[4:06] Speaker 2: the it seems like it's going to be pretty great
[4:09] Speaker 2: for this guy. So that was that was the interesting
[4:12] Speaker 2: part of going through I mean, there's a bajillion candidates here.
[4:14] Speaker 2: Obviously we know what the portal is in twenty twenty six,
[4:17] Speaker 2: but that was my thinking that I was like, I
[4:19] Speaker 2: was going to go through portal options find guys who
[4:23] Speaker 2: seem to, because of situation and prior production, have a
[4:28] Speaker 2: great shot of being a really interesting semi savior type
[4:33] Speaker 2: for a bunch of these teams.
[4:35] Speaker 1: Semi savior type.
[4:37] Speaker 2: Yeah, and I look, that's all I as sent to
[4:39] Speaker 2: me in lifetime, semi, don't we all?
[4:42] Speaker 3: I look through and I guess I had a slightly
[4:44] Speaker 3: different lens. That's okay for picking out the players on
[4:48] Speaker 3: my squad, But I was looking specifically at transfers that
[4:53] Speaker 3: on the surface didn't make a whole lot of sense
[4:55] Speaker 3: to me, and I wanted to learn a little bit
[4:57] Speaker 3: more about it. I loved looking through the guys on defense,
[5:02] Speaker 3: especially at the linebacker level, to see who might come
[5:06] Speaker 3: in and make an instant impact. Situationally, the marriages that
[5:11] Speaker 3: seem to fit more than others, that type of thing.
[5:14] Speaker 3: And you know, to your point, I think based on
[5:17] Speaker 3: those situations, we can at least offer a guess as
[5:20] Speaker 3: to whether or not some of these things are going
[5:22] Speaker 3: to work. They don't always, and a lot of them
[5:24] Speaker 3: still won't. But I think we have hints here based
[5:28] Speaker 3: on at least whatever research we can do at the
[5:31] Speaker 3: stage in mid March. Agree, why don't we start here?
[5:36] Speaker 1: Then?
[5:39] Speaker 2: Oh, that's your intrigue sound.
[5:40] Speaker 1: I think it's a good intrigue sound.
[5:42] Speaker 2: You don't want my roster construction that's pretty good too, Okay,
[5:46] Speaker 2: you know what we can alternate.
[5:47] Speaker 1: You can pick that one for your team and I
[5:49] Speaker 1: can pick this one from mine.
[5:51] Speaker 3: I'll tell you why don't you stick then with Caleb
[5:53] Speaker 3: Hawkins because you were talking about him. Caleb Hawkins comes
[5:56] Speaker 3: over from North Texas to Oklahoma State alongside Eric Morris,
[6:01] Speaker 3: had a monster season a year ago, along with Drew Mestamaker,
[6:05] Speaker 3: along with Wyatt Harris, part of that three headed offensive
[6:08] Speaker 3: monster coming up from North Texas that should at least
[6:11] Speaker 3: supercharge Oklahoma State in the short term. We talked about
[6:15] Speaker 3: Oklahoma State a few times over now over the last
[6:18] Speaker 3: couple episodes, about at least why I like them and
[6:21] Speaker 3: why I'm intrigued to learn more about them as we
[6:23] Speaker 3: get deeper into the preseason, as we get a little
[6:26] Speaker 3: bit closer to the regular season.
[6:27] Speaker 1: But why Caleb Hawkins.
[6:30] Speaker 2: So there weren't a ton of headline running backs in
[6:33] Speaker 2: this year's portal class, probably seven or eight. When you
[6:36] Speaker 2: look at Caleb Hawkins and Hollywood Smothers and Rulike Brown
[6:39] Speaker 2: guys like that, Trey Wisner off to I think Florida State, right,
[6:44] Speaker 2: there's something about Caleb Hawkins and the familiarity he's going
[6:47] Speaker 2: to have with this offense. As they sort of is port.
[6:50] Speaker 2: The right word is that, like the tech term when
[6:52] Speaker 2: you transfer something hopefully seamlessly. She poured it over.
[6:56] Speaker 3: Sure, I prefer hot swap, but you can go port
[6:59] Speaker 3: if you really want ty what you do in your
[7:01] Speaker 3: free time hot swapping. It's none of my business, it's
[7:04] Speaker 3: none of the listener's business.
[7:06] Speaker 1: Uh settle.
[7:08] Speaker 2: Caleb Hawkins with one familiarity obviously is going to be
[7:11] Speaker 2: standing next to the quarterback once again and drew mess
[7:14] Speaker 2: to maker as that he makes his way to stillwater
[7:16] Speaker 2: two when you watch him play and again for better
[7:19] Speaker 2: or worse. Against the competition, North Texas was I believe
[7:23] Speaker 2: the number one EPA rushing team in America and they
[7:25] Speaker 2: were top ten in yards after contact. His balance was exceptional,
[7:30] Speaker 2: his ability in the red zone was exceptional. His one
[7:33] Speaker 2: cut and go like not overthinking it, not looking for
[7:37] Speaker 2: highlight plays, but just trying to eat yardage as efficiently
[7:40] Speaker 2: as possible. Caleb Hawkins and here's the big wide bold
[7:46] Speaker 2: underlined if if this new transfer filled offensive line works
[7:52] Speaker 2: out for Oklahoma State, which was obviously a priority, and
[7:55] Speaker 2: it's obviously something that if your priority is to find
[7:58] Speaker 2: multiple bodies on the offensive line in the portal in
[8:01] Speaker 2: a season, you're probably in trouble in the short term.
[8:05] Speaker 2: Offensive lines, by and large, or at least high quality
[8:08] Speaker 2: offensive lines by and large are not built through the
[8:11] Speaker 2: portal exclusively, and so I don't expect him to have
[8:15] Speaker 2: the cartoonish numbers that he had last year for the
[8:18] Speaker 2: Mean Green. But in terms of what he can do
[8:22] Speaker 2: impacting things at Oklahoma State, if even the offensive line
[8:25] Speaker 2: is average, I think he's gonna be able to fight through.
[8:27] Speaker 2: I think he's gonna be able to extend drives. He
[8:29] Speaker 2: always seems to fall forward or stumble forward after being
[8:32] Speaker 2: tripped up. And there's a reason he was number one back. Obviously,
[8:38] Speaker 2: his age has something to do with it, the amount
[8:40] Speaker 2: of time he has ahead of him in college, but
[8:42] Speaker 2: the reason is obvious. And what I think he should
[8:45] Speaker 2: be able to do is immediately compete to be the
[8:48] Speaker 2: best back in the Big twelve once again. If that
[8:51] Speaker 2: emboldened the bolded italicized underlined. If works out with his
[8:57] Speaker 2: offensive line, because it's obviously position dependent, by yeah, I
[9:01] Speaker 2: expect this offense to be at the very least decently
[9:04] Speaker 2: fun with the guys coming over from North Texas. So
[9:08] Speaker 2: there is something about him that. I think he could
[9:10] Speaker 2: be a high quality engine for Look, there's there's nowhere
[9:14] Speaker 2: to go about up for Oklahoma State running the ball
[9:16] Speaker 2: and to get the best back in the portal, and
[9:18] Speaker 2: just so happens to play for your new head coach.
[9:21] Speaker 2: I just I think it's a huge win and I
[9:23] Speaker 2: expect strong, two very strong things from Caleb Hockets.
[9:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm with you.
[9:28] Speaker 3: I mean he averaged over six yards of carry, had
[9:33] Speaker 3: fourteen hundred yards twenty five touchdowns, led all running backs
[9:36] Speaker 3: in FBS with twenty five touchdowns yep, and was a
[9:39] Speaker 3: big part of the offense. He's also a big boy.
[9:42] Speaker 2: He's a large man, six two hundred.
[9:44] Speaker 3: Six to two hundred he as he said, he's one
[9:46] Speaker 3: cut guy. He can run between the tackles, but he's
[9:49] Speaker 3: got that burst provided he's got some blocking in front
[9:52] Speaker 3: of him. I think he could be poised for another
[9:55] Speaker 3: big year. Maybe not the cartoonish numbers as you put it,
[9:58] Speaker 3: But I think that's all all fair to point out
[10:00] Speaker 3: the other side of this, And this is going to
[10:02] Speaker 3: come up a couple times, I'm sure as we go
[10:04] Speaker 3: through all these transfers, it will on my end of things,
[10:07] Speaker 3: at a minimum, But you have this kind of loyalty
[10:10] Speaker 3: angle that I think you can play up with some
[10:13] Speaker 3: of these transfers. Now, obviously they're leaving their former school,
[10:17] Speaker 3: but in many cases they're following a coach. This is
[10:20] Speaker 3: one of the more extreme examples, being that North Texas
[10:24] Speaker 3: is losing dru Mesta Maker, Caleb Hawkins, White Harris all
[10:28] Speaker 3: with the former coach Eric Mortris, who goes up to
[10:29] Speaker 3: Oklahoma State, but familiar with the system, familiar with the
[10:34] Speaker 3: coaching staff. It shouldn't be a situation where he's got
[10:37] Speaker 3: to learn something new, a new vocabulary, maybe some new
[10:40] Speaker 3: teammates and names, but otherwise the system that he's playing
[10:43] Speaker 3: in clearly has proven that he can produce in it,
[10:47] Speaker 3: and he knows what he's doing.
[10:48] Speaker 1: So I like that setup. That was also one of
[10:51] Speaker 1: the common threads with the As I said, a bunch
[10:53] Speaker 1: of the guys that I'm going to list off here
[10:55] Speaker 1: in a little.
[10:55] Speaker 3: Bit had a monster year. I'm curious to see what
[10:58] Speaker 3: he looks like in the Big twelve, which is sort
[11:00] Speaker 3: of the unknown thing. I mean, it appears to me,
[11:04] Speaker 3: given all of the continuity with going from North Texas
[11:08] Speaker 3: to Oklahoma State, that he's going to be put in
[11:10] Speaker 3: every position to succeed. You just don't know until you
[11:14] Speaker 3: see it. How G five level production is going to
[11:17] Speaker 3: translate to a P four conference where the schedule is harder,
[11:21] Speaker 3: the teams are going up against are presumably going to
[11:24] Speaker 3: be more difficult. That's sort of the great unknown for me.
[11:27] Speaker 3: But at least on the surface, there's a lot to
[11:29] Speaker 3: like here.
[11:30] Speaker 2: Yeah, didn't too much against Tulane. They didn't run the
[11:32] Speaker 2: ball a lot against Tulane. In that championship game against
[11:35] Speaker 2: San Diego State in the bowl game, thirty one carries
[11:38] Speaker 2: for one hundred and ninety eight yards and two touchdowns.
[11:40] Speaker 2: And true freshmen, by the way, true freshman to be clear.
[11:43] Speaker 2: So the growth potential seems pretty high.
[11:48] Speaker 3: All right, here's mine please, I'll stick with the running
[11:54] Speaker 3: back position, Adam Mohammed.
[11:56] Speaker 2: Oh okay, so this is more. Then production would continue.
[12:01] Speaker 3: Another big back, not quite as tall, but six foot two,
[12:05] Speaker 3: twenty five. He figured to be the lead back for Washington.
[12:12] Speaker 3: And if you go back to January and read quotes
[12:15] Speaker 3: from Jedfish, even Jedfish doesn't know why he left. Jedfish
[12:19] Speaker 3: doesn't really know the reason why. Maybe it's a money thing.
[12:21] Speaker 3: Maybe he just like cal A little bit more.
[12:23] Speaker 1: I don't know. We know Toshlupoi is a dogged recruiter.
[12:27] Speaker 3: Had a promising freshman campaign in twenty twenty four, had
[12:32] Speaker 3: his carries more than double and got an increased workload
[12:35] Speaker 3: last year and averaged five yards close to five yards
[12:38] Speaker 3: of carry. It seems as though every time they've given
[12:42] Speaker 3: a little bit more to him, he's done really really
[12:45] Speaker 3: well with it. And so now you factor him in
[12:48] Speaker 3: as part of a sneaky good recruiting class at Lease
[12:52] Speaker 3: on the transfer side for cal YEP with Toshlupoi, and
[12:56] Speaker 3: I think this guy figures to have a really really
[12:58] Speaker 3: big year. I don't know if he's going to be
[13:00] Speaker 3: RB one. I think they want to run a system
[13:02] Speaker 3: that features a couple different running backs. But for sure,
[13:05] Speaker 3: he is a load to bring down. He is a
[13:08] Speaker 3: downhill runner. He moves the pile. One of the things
[13:11] Speaker 3: that kept coming up when I researched Adam Muhammad was
[13:14] Speaker 3: Toashlupoi had to scheme a defense against Adam Muhammad, and
[13:19] Speaker 3: that was one of the games in which Muhammad went
[13:21] Speaker 3: for over one hundred yards. So this is a really
[13:25] Speaker 3: interesting marriage to me, if only because Jed Fish doesn't
[13:28] Speaker 3: know why, if only because this is a system now
[13:31] Speaker 3: with Toshupoy that seemingly is going to favor a guy
[13:34] Speaker 3: like this. We know that they are trying to build
[13:36] Speaker 3: around that ground assault. I just wonder if Toshupoy saw
[13:42] Speaker 3: something when he was scheming that made him want to
[13:45] Speaker 3: go out and get a guy like this. I think
[13:48] Speaker 3: there is still a lot ahead of this guy. And
[13:51] Speaker 3: being so he's a big back in a system that
[13:53] Speaker 3: seemingly is going to work for him. With a quarterback
[13:55] Speaker 3: that you can build around, that seems to be a
[13:58] Speaker 3: very advantageous spot.
[14:00] Speaker 2: Agree, positional dependent. This was one of you would make
[14:05] Speaker 2: a case that Cal was one of the three or
[14:07] Speaker 2: four worst rushing teams in America.
[14:10] Speaker 3: Exactly, which is the other side of this two because
[14:13] Speaker 3: remember the storyline going into last year, Jade not leaves
[14:17] Speaker 3: and it's like.
[14:17] Speaker 1: Who's going to run the ball? What are they going
[14:19] Speaker 1: to be?
[14:19] Speaker 3: Jks comes in. That was obviously an exciting story, and
[14:23] Speaker 3: I thought Cal was plucky to a degree. But now
[14:26] Speaker 3: to start over to first off, retain JKS as a
[14:28] Speaker 3: big deal, but now to surround him I think with
[14:33] Speaker 3: a better talent, at least in the backfield, is really promising.
[14:35] Speaker 3: I think they got like three portal running backs something
[14:38] Speaker 3: like that. Like they're trying to build an offensive identity
[14:41] Speaker 3: around the run. And I think when you do that,
[14:43] Speaker 3: if you get a two hundred and twenty two hundred
[14:45] Speaker 3: and twenty five pounds back who runs downhill, that's a
[14:48] Speaker 3: good starting point.
[14:49] Speaker 2: So on Mohammad specifically, so between the Apple Cup game
[14:53] Speaker 2: and the Wisconsin game, six three three two two three
[14:58] Speaker 2: carries yep. Okay. So so in terms of confusion, I
[15:02] Speaker 2: think perhaps Ada Mohammad this is my opinion, not necessarily
[15:07] Speaker 2: speaking for him, thought he was better than Jonah Coleman, right,
[15:11] Speaker 2: and he was not maybe getting the respect he felt
[15:13] Speaker 2: he deserved in terms of the number of carries, and
[15:16] Speaker 2: you saw what he was able to do and explode,
[15:19] Speaker 2: Like I obviously watched that Oregon Washington game. Dude was
[15:22] Speaker 2: an absolute monster.
[15:23] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[15:24] Speaker 2: Oregon had a good defense last year, a really really
[15:27] Speaker 2: good defense, and he ran through them at times. So
[15:30] Speaker 2: his upside is obvious, especially if he's going to be
[15:33] Speaker 2: getting you know, fifteen eighteen carries a game or something
[15:36] Speaker 2: at Cal this season. Now, Cal did hit the portal
[15:39] Speaker 2: somewhat decently for offensive lineman. Yeah, again, if you have
[15:43] Speaker 2: to remake your entire line basically, or you need to
[15:46] Speaker 2: remake your entire line and you have to do so
[15:48] Speaker 2: through the portal. It might be tough sledding. He seems
[15:51] Speaker 2: like he's built to withstand some of those yards before
[15:54] Speaker 2: contact that he's definitely going to be seeing this season.
[15:57] Speaker 2: He looks really good. He like I definitely felt as
[16:01] Speaker 2: if he were the one of the best three or
[16:02] Speaker 2: four available backs in terms of upside this year. I
[16:05] Speaker 2: don't know how much. He committed to Arizona and then
[16:08] Speaker 2: followed Jed to Washington.
[16:09] Speaker 1: Yeah, and Jed again.
[16:11] Speaker 3: Jed talked about it, and it seemed like he was
[16:13] Speaker 3: a bit crestfallen at the thought of losing Adam Mohammad
[16:16] Speaker 3: because a he didn't understand why, and then b he
[16:20] Speaker 3: spoke at least to some media members about, Look, I've
[16:24] Speaker 3: known this kid since he was a junior in high school. Yeah,
[16:27] Speaker 3: it kind of hurts to lose a guy like that
[16:28] Speaker 3: that you've known for so long. But that's just sort
[16:31] Speaker 3: of where we're at. To your point, though, it seems
[16:35] Speaker 3: as though down the stretch, in particular throughout the month
[16:38] Speaker 3: of November, when he did get a little bit more
[16:41] Speaker 3: work and I'm looking specifically at a UCLA game with
[16:44] Speaker 3: twenty one carries in the Oregon game, Yeah, fourteen carries
[16:48] Speaker 3: went over one hundred yards there. There's definitely promise here.
[16:51] Speaker 3: And if they are going to try and fashion the
[16:52] Speaker 3: offensive identity around the run, this is, like I said,
[16:55] Speaker 3: a really good guy to bring over.
[16:56] Speaker 1: I like this week.
[16:57] Speaker 2: Look, he's going to look like he was always at
[17:01] Speaker 2: Cal because he is built in that like tough, bruising
[17:04] Speaker 2: Cal running back, physical mold. So very excited to see
[17:08] Speaker 2: him because it looks by the way, and you sort
[17:09] Speaker 2: of alluded to this but not fully. With the transfer class,
[17:13] Speaker 2: this is gonna be again its offensive line dependent. It
[17:16] Speaker 2: should be a pretty well rounded balanced Cal offense. When
[17:20] Speaker 2: you look at what it's Dorian Thomas coming in at
[17:22] Speaker 2: tight end from New Mexico, Ian Strong, who's on my list?
[17:26] Speaker 2: Ian Strong coming in at receiver. I think I want
[17:28] Speaker 2: to say it's Chase Hendricks coming in from Ohio, their
[17:31] Speaker 2: best receiver. Like they went after high profile names in
[17:36] Speaker 2: the portal to make this a balanced offense. Obviously, there
[17:39] Speaker 2: was the story about Tosh Lupoy flying to Hawaii like
[17:41] Speaker 2: the first thing he did when he got the job.
[17:44] Speaker 2: To make sure JKS stayed in the fold. But all
[17:47] Speaker 2: things considered, I don't know. I expect Adam Mohammad to
[17:52] Speaker 2: thrive at CAL. I don't know how many games they
[17:54] Speaker 2: win in year one, but I think they're gonna put
[17:56] Speaker 2: up some fun offensive performances.
[17:58] Speaker 3: One final point on CAL before we can go to
[18:01] Speaker 3: if you want to talk about your receiver, we can.
[18:03] Speaker 1: Do that next.
[18:04] Speaker 3: But as I look at this schedule, they go to
[18:07] Speaker 3: Syracuse and then I believe they're at SMU and at
[18:13] Speaker 3: NC State. Not necessarily easy to close out October, but
[18:20] Speaker 3: it's notable because they have Clemson at home, they have
[18:23] Speaker 3: UCLA at home, day of Virginia Tech at home, they
[18:27] Speaker 3: have PIT at home. These are teams traveling cross country
[18:31] Speaker 3: to get the CAL. In some cases, as I did
[18:34] Speaker 3: a little bit of cross referencing here, CAL could be
[18:36] Speaker 3: a very interesting trap game for.
[18:38] Speaker 1: A few of these squads.
[18:39] Speaker 3: So it's worth charting, especially if they come out hot.
[18:42] Speaker 3: We'll see them week one right out of the shoot
[18:45] Speaker 3: against Ucla, so that'll be an interesting bell weather for
[18:49] Speaker 3: us to try and figure out where Cal's at.
[18:52] Speaker 2: Yeah, in terms of the schedule, you're right, there's just
[18:54] Speaker 2: absolute opportunities for Cal to put up points, these guys
[18:57] Speaker 2: to put up stats. You know, there's some quality defense
[19:00] Speaker 2: in Harris. We'll see what Virginia Tech is with Brent
[19:03] Speaker 2: Prye defensive coordinator.
[19:06] Speaker 1: Okay, uh play player sound, I want to go.
[19:08] Speaker 2: You want me to construct?
[19:09] Speaker 1: Yeah?
[19:12] Speaker 2: Okay, all right, So your receiver, I Strong. I have
[19:15] Speaker 2: two receivers. Okay, I went for two receivers. But Ian
[19:19] Speaker 2: Strong will stay on this extremely chunky cal section of
[19:24] Speaker 2: the podcast. Ian Strong was really really good. He was
[19:27] Speaker 2: second on the team at Rutgers with I think Greek
[19:30] Speaker 2: freak right Ethan calakmnis running the show at quarterback. Ian
[19:34] Speaker 2: Strong second on the team in receiving yards behind kJ Duff.
[19:38] Speaker 2: And there's a physicality to Ian Strong that he is
[19:43] Speaker 2: a seems to be a great third down weapon, a
[19:46] Speaker 2: great weapon in you know, contested catches, one on one situations,
[19:51] Speaker 2: great in the red zone where you know he can
[19:53] Speaker 2: beat up on a smaller cornerback or something like that
[19:56] Speaker 2: and get to the goal line.
[19:57] Speaker 3: There.
[19:58] Speaker 2: There's a combination of already work and athleticism to Ian
[20:02] Speaker 2: Strong that I just I think this is just a
[20:05] Speaker 2: big time portal win for tash Lapoy and Cal.
[20:08] Speaker 1: Yeah, that.
[20:08] Speaker 2: I I love that get for cal As just offensively,
[20:14] Speaker 2: they've been sort of all over the place. You know,
[20:16] Speaker 2: they had Fernando Mendoza a couple of years ago, and
[20:18] Speaker 2: he had his moments, but they were up and down
[20:21] Speaker 2: in terms of playmakers around Mendoza. You know, they had
[20:24] Speaker 2: jayde Not, but he was in and out of the lineup.
[20:26] Speaker 2: The receivers came and went, and as soon as they
[20:28] Speaker 2: had a good young receiver you know, you're j Michael
[20:31] Speaker 2: Sturtevant types, they would transfer out almost immediately. And so
[20:35] Speaker 2: hopefully for JKS there's a little bit of stability and
[20:39] Speaker 2: he had some talent around him last year. I think
[20:41] Speaker 2: the depth of talent around JKS this year maybe highlighted
[20:45] Speaker 2: by Ian Strong making a cross country move like this.
[20:48] Speaker 2: I don't know, it's got me in my feelings, ty.
[20:51] Speaker 3: I believe his only offer out of high school was
[20:53] Speaker 3: buck Nell, which is high quality to some and I
[20:57] Speaker 3: could be wrong about that, but this was not a
[21:00] Speaker 3: heavily recruited guy by any stretch. But to your point,
[21:05] Speaker 3: over the last two seasons, he has been among the
[21:08] Speaker 3: very best in college football in contested catches. And so
[21:12] Speaker 3: if you've got a young quarterback as Cal does with Jks.
[21:17] Speaker 3: To have a guy like that who almost attacks the
[21:20] Speaker 3: ball as if he's a safety. He might have played
[21:22] Speaker 3: some safety if I think back to his high school days,
[21:26] Speaker 3: but attacking the ball in that manner is sort of
[21:31] Speaker 3: what you need as a young quarterback. Somebody who's reliable,
[21:35] Speaker 3: who's going to put his body on the line and
[21:36] Speaker 3: go up and get the ball. So I really like
[21:39] Speaker 3: this move. Again, it speaks to what Toshelpoy is trying
[21:43] Speaker 3: to do. He was able to go out there and
[21:45] Speaker 3: put together a really, really nice transfer class. So whether
[21:49] Speaker 3: it's somebody down in the red zone if you're a
[21:52] Speaker 3: little bit too far away to give it to Adam Mohammad,
[21:55] Speaker 3: but somebody down in the red zone who can make
[21:56] Speaker 3: some of those catches in tight windows, or just somebody
[21:59] Speaker 3: on the downs you know when you need a catch
[22:02] Speaker 3: and you can rely on somebody. It's a really nice
[22:05] Speaker 3: piece to have in the arsenal. I would love if
[22:10] Speaker 3: I were a Cal fan to know that I'm getting
[22:12] Speaker 3: a guy who go up and get fifty to fifty
[22:14] Speaker 3: balls sure Like. I feel like we've talked about that
[22:18] Speaker 3: so many times with respect to Clemson and how you
[22:21] Speaker 3: can almost draw a straight line between when Clemson stopped
[22:24] Speaker 3: getting guys like t Higgins and where they're at now,
[22:29] Speaker 3: which is the offense has gone downhill. They have lacked
[22:32] Speaker 3: for a while, the true fifty to fifty receiver who
[22:35] Speaker 3: can go up and get bald now Brian Westcoat, that's
[22:38] Speaker 3: kind of a different story this day and age. I mean,
[22:39] Speaker 3: they're still developing that side of things, and I do
[22:42] Speaker 3: like their receiver room. Not to make this about Clemson,
[22:44] Speaker 3: but there's definitely a correlation between not having those guys
[22:48] Speaker 3: and where Clemson's offense has been recently. So to bring
[22:52] Speaker 3: a guy like this in for young quarterback, I think
[22:53] Speaker 3: it's pretty cool.
[22:54] Speaker 2: I agree.
[22:56] Speaker 1: All right, my turn place.
[23:00] Speaker 3: You want to talk receivers, Let's talk Omari and Miller
[23:05] Speaker 3: going to the desert, going to the desert from Colorado,
[23:10] Speaker 3: going to Arizona State. He produced really good numbers, I
[23:16] Speaker 3: think with dysfunction all around him at Colorado, and so
[23:20] Speaker 3: my question would be, if you can put him in
[23:22] Speaker 3: a situation at ASU where he doesn't have so much chaos,
[23:25] Speaker 3: there isn't so much turnover and so much that's changing
[23:28] Speaker 3: from week to week, what does that look like? Because
[23:31] Speaker 3: he's also one of these guys who can do a
[23:33] Speaker 3: lot six, two, two, ten. He's got, i believe, just
[23:37] Speaker 3: one season now to try and prove himself an NFL commodity.
[23:43] Speaker 3: And he's got an offensive mastermind in Kenny Dillingham who
[23:47] Speaker 3: can hopefully scheme him over.
[23:48] Speaker 1: You know.
[23:49] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's really exciting. So it's not just him either.
[23:54] Speaker 3: They were very active in the portal. They're very active
[23:57] Speaker 3: at receiver. We can talk about Cutter Bowl in a
[24:00] Speaker 3: little bit, not to give too much away.
[24:01] Speaker 2: Yeah, I've got Cutter on my list.
[24:04] Speaker 3: But this is another guy who's very good with contested catches.
[24:08] Speaker 3: All those metrics line up. This is another guy who's
[24:11] Speaker 3: got real good deep ball potential. I don't know if
[24:14] Speaker 3: he's necessarily a like for like replacement for Jordan Tyson,
[24:18] Speaker 3: who is going to the NFL and.
[24:20] Speaker 2: He's going to be, like, what, a top first round type.
[24:22] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he's easily going to be a first round guy.
[24:26] Speaker 3: But again, producing all that he did in a wildly
[24:32] Speaker 3: inconsistent offense like we saw at Colorado a year ago.
[24:36] Speaker 3: He had eight touchdowns over eight hundred yards, receiving eighteen
[24:41] Speaker 3: yards per reception. This is a guy who has produced
[24:44] Speaker 3: and I'm looking at guys who have produced at their
[24:46] Speaker 3: previous stop to come to maybe a more stable setting
[24:50] Speaker 3: to maybe take off here in twenty twenty six. So
[24:52] Speaker 3: I like this move a lot for Kenny Dillingham, especially
[24:55] Speaker 3: given all the other new pieces that they got on
[24:57] Speaker 3: offense that this guy very much looks like wide receiver.
[25:01] Speaker 1: One.
[25:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, they have Red Harris coming in from Boston College,
[25:05] Speaker 2: bigger body six or five, and so that'll take some
[25:07] Speaker 2: attention away. But yeah, Omarion Miller was able to produce
[25:12] Speaker 2: multiple quarterbacks at Colorado in situations that was seemed from
[25:17] Speaker 2: Afar to be a little bit dysfunctional at Colorado. As
[25:20] Speaker 2: you sort of noted, I imagine it's what Marcus Arroyo with
[25:25] Speaker 2: Kenny Dillingham and then receivers coach hines Ward. Heines Ward, Yeah,
[25:30] Speaker 2: the single most famous receivers coach in the sport, for
[25:32] Speaker 2: whatever that's worth. But you talk about contested catches, you know,
[25:34] Speaker 2: as physical as it gets in you know, modern NFL
[25:38] Speaker 2: history in terms of a physical receiver. So should be
[25:41] Speaker 2: coached well continually. And ASU's schedule is tricky. I would
[25:48] Speaker 2: say a lot of tricky defenses on there that do
[25:50] Speaker 2: multiple things decently well in the Big twelve and they
[25:53] Speaker 2: get I believe A and M on the road in
[25:55] Speaker 2: week two, So offense is going to need to come
[25:58] Speaker 2: together pretty quickly. But Omaron Miller seems to be that
[26:01] Speaker 2: proven guy. We'll see if he has number one potential
[26:05] Speaker 2: and what it means if he is the number one
[26:07] Speaker 2: guy for ASU, if that's a good thing or not
[26:09] Speaker 2: so good thing. But I think it's a good addition
[26:12] Speaker 2: for a team that needed that pop outside.
[26:15] Speaker 1: Yeah, and the other thing that I like.
[26:16] Speaker 3: And I kind of allude to this, but he wasn't
[26:19] Speaker 3: the only receiver they went out and they got.
[26:20] Speaker 1: They also brought over Reed Harris. Yeah, I mentioned him,
[26:23] Speaker 1: yeap the h Yeah, the receiver from BC six five
[26:26] Speaker 1: two seventeen.
[26:27] Speaker 3: Not quite the same type of receiver. Definitely relies a
[26:31] Speaker 3: little bit more on his physicality to bring in balls.
[26:34] Speaker 3: I don't want to classify him as a possession receiver.
[26:37] Speaker 3: That's probably doing him a bit of a the service,
[26:39] Speaker 3: but more of a possession receiver. Yea.
[26:42] Speaker 1: And a guy like Miller, All right, give me your sound.
[26:51] Speaker 1: Where are you going next?
[26:52] Speaker 2: Well, I guess we'll say it's you. Well, this will
[26:54] Speaker 2: be like the pseudo West Coast portion. Actually We've got
[26:56] Speaker 2: a few West coasts, but I have Cutter Bowley.
[27:00] Speaker 1: Okay, he's your quarterback six five, two twenty.
[27:03] Speaker 2: Yes, big dude at times a revelation for Kentucky last
[27:07] Speaker 2: year at times really struggled. Though I'm willing to write
[27:11] Speaker 2: off at least a portion of his struggles to just
[27:14] Speaker 2: playing for a Mark Stoops offense. Right, That's just it's
[27:17] Speaker 2: not a quarterback friendly place most of the time. Mark
[27:20] Speaker 2: Stoops also gone from Lexington, Kentucky now as well. Going
[27:25] Speaker 2: back and watching Cutter Bowlie, I was reminded why I
[27:28] Speaker 2: kind of liked him at times last year, that he's
[27:31] Speaker 2: got a really nice arm that got you know, the physicality,
[27:34] Speaker 2: is kind of unafraid to move and run like could
[27:37] Speaker 2: be a statue if he want, but has a good
[27:40] Speaker 2: enough bit of athleticism to make him a threat with
[27:42] Speaker 2: his legs. The stuff that I like about him is
[27:45] Speaker 2: he seems to have a pretty strong arm, Like he
[27:48] Speaker 2: can really slang it time.
[27:50] Speaker 3: Right, he can really spin it as they say, you know,
[27:53] Speaker 3: we choose our verbs, how we choose our verbs.
[27:56] Speaker 2: I like his arm. I like his fearlessness downfield. A
[27:58] Speaker 2: lot of his yardage didn't come from little screens or
[28:00] Speaker 2: thrown behind the line of scrimmage. He was into challenging
[28:04] Speaker 2: teams down the field, especially over the middle of the field.
[28:07] Speaker 2: The only thing that I worry about, but I think
[28:09] Speaker 2: he'll be able to correct. He is there's a little
[28:13] Speaker 2: bit of casual address James Franklin to his game. Okay,
[28:16] Speaker 2: there's a little bit, and like, not the coach, the
[28:19] Speaker 2: old miss not the coach, the old Miszoo quarterback that
[28:22] Speaker 2: he's just sort of it seems like a half a second,
[28:25] Speaker 2: not behind, but half a second to chill. At times
[28:29] Speaker 2: we're like, where's the suddenness to his game as he's
[28:33] Speaker 2: throwing into the Georgia defense of the Tennessee defense or
[28:36] Speaker 2: the South Carolina d whatever it is that there is
[28:39] Speaker 2: sort of the chillness to his game. I think could
[28:43] Speaker 2: be hurried up a little bit, and I think it
[28:45] Speaker 2: will be. But the best of him, which was not
[28:49] Speaker 2: on display against Louisville and the season last year. The
[28:52] Speaker 2: best of him, I think is aggressive and interesting, and
[28:57] Speaker 2: I think he'll be developed really well at ASU. I
[29:01] Speaker 2: thought it was a savvy pick because you can see
[29:03] Speaker 2: the raw material there and he has the game reps,
[29:06] Speaker 2: and I think by and large the defenses that he's
[29:08] Speaker 2: playing against. Even though I think there's a lot of
[29:10] Speaker 2: quality on this schedule in terms of defenses, I think
[29:13] Speaker 2: the NFL upside of the edge rushers or the secondaries
[29:17] Speaker 2: isn't quite where it was in the SEC. And I
[29:21] Speaker 2: think he has an opportunity to thrive here.
[29:24] Speaker 3: There is something that you're not mentioning. Please, there is
[29:27] Speaker 3: a connection here to me, I guess, sort of to you. Okay,
[29:34] Speaker 3: Kenny Dillingham offered this guy when he was still offensive
[29:37] Speaker 3: coordinator at Oregon.
[29:39] Speaker 1: I believe, Oh Diddy, I believe so. I believe that's right.
[29:42] Speaker 2: Okay. Quarterback offers are always weird though, because they're kind
[29:45] Speaker 2: of domino offerers. We're like, well, we got to see
[29:47] Speaker 2: we're offering you, but we want to see you throw,
[29:49] Speaker 2: and we're offering you. But if this guy commits, it's
[29:51] Speaker 2: not necessarily a committable offer for you. Sure, but he
[29:55] Speaker 2: certainly thought enough of him. I guess.
[29:56] Speaker 1: I believe that's accurate, and if it's not, somebody can
[29:59] Speaker 1: yell at me, but I'll look it up. Continue if
[30:03] Speaker 1: in fact that.
[30:04] Speaker 3: Is true, and there is some sort of personal investment
[30:08] Speaker 3: from Kenny Dillingham to go out and get this guy.
[30:12] Speaker 3: That's I think an important signal.
[30:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, offers from Alabama, from Auburn, Florida state, like was
[30:17] Speaker 2: a for a I guess, composite four star quarterback, had
[30:22] Speaker 2: a good amount of.
[30:23] Speaker 3: Offers, twelve interceptions, a little bit of a concern for sure,
[30:28] Speaker 3: but completely new system, and we just talked through what
[30:31] Speaker 3: they're doing at the receiver position as well. Kenny Dillingham's
[30:35] Speaker 3: system I think has worked out famously well for other
[30:38] Speaker 3: quarterbacks who have stepped into it. So in theory, it's
[30:41] Speaker 3: a nice fit for Cutter Buwllie, I would say, compared
[30:46] Speaker 3: to some of the other names that were kicked around
[30:49] Speaker 3: when the portal was still spinning, Cutter buwlly definitely is
[30:53] Speaker 3: not as exciting as like Sam Levitt, not as excited
[30:56] Speaker 3: as like Dylan Royola. It's it does not have like
[31:00] Speaker 3: let's say, superstar name brand recognition among our listening base.
[31:06] Speaker 3: But this could be something that works out really well.
[31:09] Speaker 1: He's a big kid. They're obviously trying to surround him
[31:12] Speaker 1: and reinvigorate that offense with some talent from other places.
[31:17] Speaker 1: I kind of like it. Okay, fair enough, let's stick
[31:20] Speaker 1: with quarterback, Okay, So.
[31:25] Speaker 3: Mine is Aaron Filo. Okay, continue, I did not get
[31:31] Speaker 3: this one at all. So consider the context at Florida.
[31:36] Speaker 3: You fire Billy Napier. You had a guy in DJ Lagway,
[31:40] Speaker 3: who frankly I had talked up for the last two
[31:43] Speaker 3: years as being a Florida guy through and through. You
[31:45] Speaker 3: remember that, remember me talking that talking that way about him?
[31:48] Speaker 1: Eyes.
[31:49] Speaker 3: This guy's never going to leave, He'll never leave. He
[31:51] Speaker 3: loves Florida. He's helping recruit guys to Florida. He's never leave.
[31:56] Speaker 1: He left, did you?
[31:58] Speaker 3: Laguay went to Baylor. We can maybe talk about DJ
[32:01] Speaker 3: in a little bit if we want to. But it
[32:05] Speaker 3: was surprising to me that there weren't bigger names lined
[32:08] Speaker 3: up for this role, and instead they go out to
[32:14] Speaker 3: get Aaron Filo, who was the backup to Haines King
[32:17] Speaker 3: at Georgia Tech. Now it's notable for a couple of reasons.
[32:21] Speaker 3: First and foremost, there is a connection between Aaron Filo
[32:25] Speaker 3: and the new offensive coordinator at Florida, who's going to
[32:27] Speaker 3: be Buster Faulkner, who was previously as offensive coordinator at
[32:30] Speaker 3: Georgia Tech. So it was a two for one special, right,
[32:33] Speaker 3: You get two guys from Georgia Tech coming down hopefully
[32:37] Speaker 3: trying to reinvigorate this Gators offense, which actually wasn't horrible
[32:40] Speaker 3: last year, but new names. He is a big quarterback
[32:45] Speaker 3: six two two twenty. He's got a couple of years
[32:47] Speaker 3: left of eligibility. And I'm always interested in these almost
[32:52] Speaker 3: like moneyball style pickups in this age and the transfer portal.
[32:56] Speaker 3: They did not go out after the highest priced name,
[33:01] Speaker 3: like two million dollars.
[33:02] Speaker 1: Whatever he's getting.
[33:03] Speaker 3: It is not nearly the top of the market. And
[33:06] Speaker 3: I think it's interesting because he already knows the playbook,
[33:10] Speaker 3: already knows the playbook got a very limited sample size
[33:13] Speaker 3: on what this guy can do. But across the board,
[33:16] Speaker 3: the scouting report seems to be an accurate passer for
[33:20] Speaker 3: short and intermedia throws. Working a little bit on the
[33:23] Speaker 3: deep ball still, but at least given what Bustern Faulkner
[33:28] Speaker 3: likes to do, the terminology, the route concepts, the play
[33:34] Speaker 3: but all of that stuff, there's a familiarity there, and
[33:38] Speaker 3: this is one of the common threads that we are
[33:40] Speaker 3: seeing more and more of in this stage of the
[33:42] Speaker 3: transfer portal. If it's not a head coach bringing his guys,
[33:45] Speaker 3: it's a coordinator trying to bring his guys so that
[33:47] Speaker 3: you can hit the ground running and get started right away.
[33:50] Speaker 3: So you lose DJ lagway, you decide you're not going
[33:54] Speaker 3: to get into bidding wars for some of the higher
[33:56] Speaker 3: price names. Instead, you're going to bring down Aaron Filo,
[33:58] Speaker 3: who's already got a familiar with the system, and I
[34:02] Speaker 3: think it's an offense around him that has a lot
[34:05] Speaker 3: of really interesting pieces. Like I was real close to
[34:08] Speaker 3: putting Eric Singleton Junior on my show.
[34:10] Speaker 2: I was gonna say, speaking of Buster Faulkner experience.
[34:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
[34:15] Speaker 3: So like there are a lot of interesting pieces that
[34:19] Speaker 3: have been added to this offense. And I just feel like,
[34:22] Speaker 3: and I've said it a couple times over now as
[34:25] Speaker 3: a whole people are sleeping on Florida because this is
[34:28] Speaker 3: still a really good roster. This is a team that
[34:31] Speaker 3: is very much going to fly under the radar given
[34:34] Speaker 3: all the turmoil and changes of the last year now.
[34:38] Speaker 3: And I really like what they've got on hand. So
[34:41] Speaker 3: provided he's not a total disaster, and I don't think
[34:43] Speaker 3: he will be, I recognize there's probably going to be
[34:46] Speaker 3: a bit of a learning curve, and we have a
[34:48] Speaker 3: very limited sample size, I mean one hundred and two
[34:51] Speaker 3: career pass attempts. But there have been glimpses of what
[34:55] Speaker 3: this guy can do. Given the fact that there's going
[34:57] Speaker 3: to be a reunion now with Buster Faulkner, that's really
[35:00] Speaker 3: exciting to me.
[35:01] Speaker 2: And it's, by the way, not just Eric Singleton, it's
[35:04] Speaker 2: Brenelle Brown and Dallas Wilson and Dallas Wilson, so Aaron
[35:08] Speaker 2: Filo if he is good, even if it's on short
[35:11] Speaker 2: intermediate passes and he's working on the deep ball even more,
[35:14] Speaker 2: the opportunities should be there, right, you are not threading
[35:18] Speaker 2: balls to so so receivers. It seems from my vantage
[35:22] Speaker 2: point that there should be opportunities. There's more and more
[35:25] Speaker 2: I think Georgia Tech guys that have come over, so
[35:28] Speaker 2: there's familiarity along like offensive line and tight end transfers
[35:32] Speaker 2: as well. So hopefully to your point, the learning curve
[35:36] Speaker 2: isn't too steep. But he's never been undoubtedly the guy no,
[35:41] Speaker 2: and he's going to start for Florida.
[35:45] Speaker 3: Right, that's one hundred percent. But again, there are reasons
[35:49] Speaker 3: here to think that this is going to work out
[35:51] Speaker 3: better than maybe a lot of people would expect. When
[35:53] Speaker 3: you see the name Aaron Filo, who again is not
[35:56] Speaker 3: a headliner. But this is an offensive system that demands accuracy,
[36:02] Speaker 3: at least on the short to intermediate throws. You gotta
[36:06] Speaker 3: process very quick post snap. You got to get the
[36:09] Speaker 3: ball out to playmakers in space, and they've got a
[36:11] Speaker 3: bunch of those on this roster. So it, at least
[36:14] Speaker 3: in theory, this could end up being the steel of
[36:17] Speaker 3: the portal class.
[36:19] Speaker 2: Agree. Inside of the line transfers, there's you know, they're
[36:22] Speaker 2: counting on a lot in terms of I think left tackle, center,
[36:25] Speaker 2: and right guard slotted right now as new transfer starters.
[36:30] Speaker 2: I think there's one or two of them from Georgia
[36:31] Speaker 2: Tech itself, so he'll need the time. But no, I
[36:36] Speaker 2: think you're right in terms of looking at this as
[36:37] Speaker 2: one of the more intriguing transfers for sure.
[36:39] Speaker 1: All right, give me your sound roster construction.
[36:45] Speaker 2: I don't know why I did that came out.
[36:47] Speaker 1: What do you got?
[36:48] Speaker 2: I'll use my final offensive option here, and that's JJ
[36:52] Speaker 2: Buchanan at Michigan.
[36:54] Speaker 3: All right, So from Utah to Michigan.
[36:57] Speaker 2: M he's good, man. I don't know what to tell you.
[37:03] Speaker 2: He's really good, and I think because he is sort
[37:08] Speaker 2: of either a big receiver, small tight end. He was
[37:12] Speaker 2: a true freshman I believe last year from Nevada didn't
[37:15] Speaker 2: have a ton of huge offers.
[37:16] Speaker 1: Recruited as a tight end.
[37:18] Speaker 2: Recruited as a tight end, I would say, kind of
[37:21] Speaker 2: hybrid and then fell more is into like a receiver
[37:23] Speaker 2: role by the end of the year for Utah. So
[37:26] Speaker 2: whatever he is, I think he has the opportunity to
[37:29] Speaker 2: be like a like a rich man's safety blanket. Like
[37:35] Speaker 2: he's not just a guy who's going to sit in
[37:37] Speaker 2: his own and get nine yards on third and seven.
[37:39] Speaker 2: He can go downfield. He was able to do so
[37:42] Speaker 2: for a Utah passing attack, which, while much improved, that's
[37:46] Speaker 2: not why Utah was winning games and scoring points that
[37:48] Speaker 2: they were shredding teams down the field all the time.
[37:50] Speaker 2: They had a great rushing attack. I think it will
[37:53] Speaker 2: prepare him. I think his experience in Jason Beck's system.
[37:58] Speaker 2: I think the idea of receiving passes from hopefully the
[38:02] Speaker 2: best of Bryce Underwood in a new receiving corps for
[38:06] Speaker 2: Michigan or whatever whatever we're gonna you know, label him as.
[38:13] Speaker 2: I think he has the opportunity to be an enormous
[38:15] Speaker 2: piece for a hopefully improved Michigan offense, because by the
[38:18] Speaker 2: end of last season, he was a major weapon for
[38:21] Speaker 2: Utah and a major loss for the youths. If you
[38:24] Speaker 2: you know poll Utah fans, I'm sure you'll get a
[38:26] Speaker 2: bunch of different answers because there were a bunch of
[38:27] Speaker 2: impact dudes that they ended up losing with Kyle Whittingham
[38:31] Speaker 2: leaving JJ Buchanan as a freshman flashing. What he was
[38:34] Speaker 2: able to do I think was probably from what I
[38:37] Speaker 2: could tell, particularly disappointing for Utah fans, which you know
[38:42] Speaker 2: can only be a good sign when your previous fan
[38:44] Speaker 2: base is super bummed to lose a dude, and now
[38:47] Speaker 2: he's entering into a situation where you know they have
[38:50] Speaker 2: Michigan has, you know, the the upside, the obvious upside
[38:53] Speaker 2: of Andrew Marsho had a great freshman year last year.
[38:56] Speaker 2: But in terms of building out the depth of that
[38:59] Speaker 2: room and the options for Bryce Underwood, it's looking like,
[39:03] Speaker 2: especially with all the offensive line coming back that are
[39:05] Speaker 2: coming back that you know, played with the portal a
[39:07] Speaker 2: little bit when the coaching change was announced.
[39:11] Speaker 1: I think J. J.
[39:11] Speaker 2: Buchanan has the opportunity to be a major part of
[39:14] Speaker 2: a much improved Michigan offense.
[39:16] Speaker 3: You know, these guys who are sort of tight ends
[39:19] Speaker 3: have kind of broken football as we know it.
[39:23] Speaker 2: Position lists in a good way. Yeah, position listen.
[39:25] Speaker 1: A good way.
[39:25] Speaker 3: We have seen these guys thrive because there's just you
[39:29] Speaker 3: can use them and you can exploit matchups in a
[39:31] Speaker 3: way you can't with other players recruited out of high school.
[39:35] Speaker 3: As a tight end, he's six three, two twenty five
[39:38] Speaker 3: two hundred and sixty nine snaps in the slot, two
[39:41] Speaker 3: hundred and sixty four snaps out wide, only ten as
[39:45] Speaker 3: a true in line title line. Yeahah, so you can
[39:48] Speaker 3: see how they used him. He still could kind of
[39:51] Speaker 3: go either way, Like he needs to get better as
[39:53] Speaker 3: a blocker, but if he adds fifteen pounds you can
[39:55] Speaker 3: move him back. This is a true tight end. If
[39:58] Speaker 3: you don't want to do that, you can keep playing
[40:00] Speaker 3: in him out wide. He thrived in that role as well.
[40:02] Speaker 3: So there's some versatility here that they have to work with.
[40:06] Speaker 3: And as you said, given what is returning with the
[40:08] Speaker 3: likes of a guy like and Andrew marsh having a
[40:11] Speaker 3: guy like this so you can move around the field
[40:13] Speaker 3: and uses a safety blanket and a bunch of different
[40:16] Speaker 3: roles is really exciting, really exciting. He does not have,
[40:21] Speaker 3: at least from my vantage point, a tried and true
[40:24] Speaker 3: positional identity at this stage. So a guy like a
[40:28] Speaker 3: Jason Beck who's obviously on the rise as an offensive
[40:31] Speaker 3: coordinator just a football mind, you can do a lot
[40:35] Speaker 3: with that, especially at your new stop. And again, this
[40:39] Speaker 3: is another situation where you've got a guy following his
[40:41] Speaker 3: coaching staff, following his coaching staff to ann Arbor. So
[40:45] Speaker 3: hopefully there's a familiarity there as well.
[40:48] Speaker 1: I like it.
[40:50] Speaker 3: I like all of these, that's why they're on the list.
[40:52] Speaker 3: But this is another guy that I had jotted down
[40:54] Speaker 3: as like, there's there's some real interest here in seeing
[40:58] Speaker 3: what kind of chemistry develops between I mean, Bryce Underwood
[41:00] Speaker 3: and if it can help lift that offense.
[41:03] Speaker 2: Yeah, instead of a smaller slot receiver who is running
[41:07] Speaker 2: drag routes or you know, tunnel screens and taking advantage
[41:12] Speaker 2: of being smaller, he's a thick slot he is, and
[41:15] Speaker 2: he he's another one of these contested catch guys. Yeah,
[41:19] Speaker 2: you'll be surprised to hear a multi sport athlete in
[41:22] Speaker 2: high school was doing like three sixty dunks. I saw
[41:25] Speaker 2: uh so, like, all these guys are freaking athletes, but
[41:29] Speaker 2: just to have a weapon like that, a true hybrid
[41:31] Speaker 2: in a sense, that's that's really important.
[41:34] Speaker 1: I think when you're starting over at a place.
[41:36] Speaker 2: Did anybody say that about you?
[41:38] Speaker 1: What?
[41:39] Speaker 3: Like?
[41:39] Speaker 2: Oh, Ty held him right? You should have seen him
[41:40] Speaker 2: in high school, absolute freak, multi sports star, table tennis, yeah,
[41:46] Speaker 2: Chinese checkers, yeah.
[41:50] Speaker 1: Sick scrimmage yeah.
[41:52] Speaker 2: Yeah. What is scholastics because I like academic to cathlon
[41:56] Speaker 2: it was.
[41:56] Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't I don't know. I think everybody's got
[41:58] Speaker 1: their own version of it.
[42:00] Speaker 2: Okay.
[42:01] Speaker 3: I was on the team with a couple friends. Yeah,
[42:04] Speaker 3: And I was never on the A team. It was
[42:06] Speaker 3: one of those things that you signed up for because
[42:08] Speaker 3: you could put it on a college transcript. Sure, And
[42:11] Speaker 3: so I was really only around for the sports questions.
[42:15] Speaker 3: This is not to imply I was a dummy.
[42:16] Speaker 1: I wasn't.
[42:18] Speaker 3: But my true like Jackpot Zone, was when Zone I
[42:23] Speaker 3: just made that up with sports questions and they never
[42:25] Speaker 3: asked him.
[42:27] Speaker 2: Oh man, I want to come up with the roster
[42:29] Speaker 2: of Ty hilden Brandt multi sport Tie hilda Brandt.
[42:33] Speaker 3: I was recruiting team. I was recruited to wrestle. I
[42:37] Speaker 3: was recruited to play golf. I was recruited by the
[42:40] Speaker 3: coach to like run cross country or track. I was
[42:44] Speaker 3: recruited to play soccer. I told you I was. I
[42:48] Speaker 3: was recruited to do both ice and roller speed skating.
[42:53] Speaker 3: So I had a bunch of offers that were on
[42:55] Speaker 3: the table.
[42:56] Speaker 2: Why didn't you accept any?
[42:58] Speaker 1: In the I probably should have played something else, But
[43:00] Speaker 1: in the end, you're just.
[43:01] Speaker 2: Like all all first team making out.
[43:03] Speaker 3: Ty.
[43:04] Speaker 1: I was very much in demand.
[43:07] Speaker 2: No, I'm asking you if if the ladies were like, no, Ty,
[43:10] Speaker 2: we can't have you speed skating. We need to get
[43:13] Speaker 2: get it behind the gym frenchhen.
[43:15] Speaker 3: There would have been plenty of time for me to
[43:17] Speaker 3: focus on any of those sports. Okay, any of those sports. Okay,
[43:22] Speaker 3: I chose baseball.
[43:23] Speaker 1: I probably should have picked another one, but no, Baseball's fun.
[43:28] Speaker 2: Fixing my chair here, Okay.
[43:29] Speaker 1: I'll do my last one here. On offense.
[43:32] Speaker 3: Okay, my last one here on offense is a tight
[43:38] Speaker 3: end and that's Ben Bromer.
[43:39] Speaker 2: Hmm, good pick.
[43:41] Speaker 3: Come in with Matt Campbell, two Penn State from Iowa State.
[43:45] Speaker 3: This is an offense that's gonna build a lot around
[43:47] Speaker 3: tight ends. I'm gonna see some two tight end sets.
[43:51] Speaker 3: So they went out. They got the top by some measure,
[43:54] Speaker 3: the top tight end in the portal class.
[43:57] Speaker 1: He knows the.
[43:59] Speaker 3: Playbook, he knows the system. The system is going to
[44:02] Speaker 3: run a lot based on what he can do. So
[44:05] Speaker 3: there's a lot of familiarity, not just with Campbell, but
[44:08] Speaker 3: with Taylor Mauser, who has something of a track record
[44:11] Speaker 3: for developing tight ends.
[44:13] Speaker 1: This is a slam.
[44:14] Speaker 3: Dunk in my view, as a Sam dunk six seven,
[44:17] Speaker 3: two fifty five. He's a big kid, he was really
[44:19] Speaker 3: good last year. There is zero learning curve. He's going
[44:22] Speaker 3: to be able to hit the ground running with a
[44:23] Speaker 3: quarterback that also came over from Ames and rock obecked.
[44:29] Speaker 1: So I don't know what else to say about this one.
[44:32] Speaker 3: It if there is such thing as a slam dunk
[44:34] Speaker 3: in the transfer portal, a guy like a Brahmer is
[44:37] Speaker 3: is absolutely it And if it works to the extent
[44:41] Speaker 3: that I think it will, hopefully that helps unlock a
[44:44] Speaker 3: the running game and then be some of the downfield
[44:47] Speaker 3: passing threats which Penn State needs to get better at.
[44:52] Speaker 3: There's just no two ways about that. He can help
[44:54] Speaker 3: with all of those things. He is the engine that's
[44:56] Speaker 3: going to make this thing go.
[44:58] Speaker 2: Are any of because Penn the state's tight end room
[45:01] Speaker 2: was especially robust.
[45:04] Speaker 3: Well it was, and they lost Luke Reynolds who went
[45:07] Speaker 3: with James Franklin down in Virginia Tech. That was Andrew
[45:10] Speaker 3: Olish who went out to Oregon was their big five
[45:12] Speaker 3: star in the previous recruiting class. But there's still enough
[45:16] Speaker 3: I think in the cupboard they'll be fine ultimately, and
[45:20] Speaker 3: especially now that they bring this guy over from Iowa State.
[45:22] Speaker 1: It's a pretty big.
[45:23] Speaker 2: Deal because the obvious maybe you wouldn't know better than
[45:27] Speaker 2: I but you're gonna run two tight end sets, especially
[45:30] Speaker 2: if the receiving corps does not look super and obviously explosive.
[45:35] Speaker 2: I don't. I mean, what is it Iowa State guys
[45:37] Speaker 2: coming over? Who's playing receiver for Penn State this year?
[45:40] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean they've got two guys that come over
[45:42] Speaker 3: from Iowa State.
[45:44] Speaker 2: Yep.
[45:44] Speaker 3: I know everybody was really excited and wanted to see
[45:46] Speaker 3: more out of Kobe Howard last year, and James Franklin,
[45:49] Speaker 3: for whatever.
[45:49] Speaker 2: He's still there.
[45:50] Speaker 3: Didn't really go there with it, but yes, he's still there.
[45:53] Speaker 3: I think we'll see a little bit more out of him.
[45:54] Speaker 3: So it's just it is a lot of Iowa State
[45:59] Speaker 3: and as we talked about on the previous episode, functionally
[46:01] Speaker 3: it's an Iowa State team with Penn State Penn State
[46:05] Speaker 3: guys sort of filling in the gaps. But uh, I
[46:08] Speaker 3: think this is someone who's gonna step in hit the
[46:10] Speaker 3: ground running. Just being so, it's basically the offense that
[46:13] Speaker 3: he played with a year ago.
[46:14] Speaker 2: Were you also recruited to play slot receiver for Penn
[46:17] Speaker 2: State this past I was not speed skating.
[46:20] Speaker 1: I was.
[46:20] Speaker 3: I did make it to the Penn State Intramural co
[46:25] Speaker 3: Ed semi finals playing quarterback for a co ed team
[46:30] Speaker 3: and a little bit of slot receiver.
[46:32] Speaker 2: How'd you do?
[46:34] Speaker 1: Made it to the semifinals? Okay, I don't know a
[46:38] Speaker 1: lot of competition. Yeah, okay, listen, I'm an athlete, Dan.
[46:42] Speaker 2: You know this about can't raise your hands above your shoulders?
[46:45] Speaker 2: Why I'm podcasting these That's true?
[46:48] Speaker 1: All right?
[46:49] Speaker 2: Continue?
[46:49] Speaker 1: Uh that's all I have to say about him.
[46:51] Speaker 3: That's a slack Okay, give me yours play player sound
[46:53] Speaker 3: and let's go to defense.
[46:55] Speaker 2: Let's do some defense.
[46:57] Speaker 3: Ty.
[46:58] Speaker 2: My first name is We're gonna go Damon Wilson just
[47:00] Speaker 2: because he's arguably the biggest name MIAMU on the the
[47:05] Speaker 2: defensive portal list. Look, he's on the edge. He was
[47:08] Speaker 2: at Georgia and last year he was at Missoo. There
[47:11] Speaker 2: was some consternation about his deal at Miszoo and will
[47:13] Speaker 2: there be a hold up in him leaving because of
[47:15] Speaker 2: certain promises or I guess Georgia to Missoo. That's where
[47:18] Speaker 2: the sort of roadblock was. But he's now at Miami
[47:24] Speaker 2: and he's now taking over. All he has to do
[47:26] Speaker 2: is be kind of as good, and he looks to
[47:28] Speaker 2: be kind of as good. I don't know if he
[47:30] Speaker 2: has the same size necessarily I can look that up,
[47:33] Speaker 2: but as a key Mesidor and Ruby Bain.
[47:36] Speaker 1: Four two fifty, So he's got size.
[47:39] Speaker 3: I don't remember if it's the same or not, but
[47:41] Speaker 3: it's not gonna be it's not going to be an issue.
[47:44] Speaker 2: No, he's got size. He should be very good.
[47:47] Speaker 3: Uh.
[47:47] Speaker 2: Ruben Bain checked in by the way six two two
[47:50] Speaker 2: sixty three, and earlier on he was more in the
[47:54] Speaker 2: two seventies, so a larger guy at defensive end edge
[47:58] Speaker 2: than Damon Wilson. But Wilson is lightning off of the
[48:03] Speaker 2: edge and this was a very good Miszoo defense, a
[48:04] Speaker 2: very good Miszoo front, and he should step in, and
[48:08] Speaker 2: there are guys obviously rotation guys who are going to
[48:11] Speaker 2: step in be terrific alongside him. For what Miami will
[48:16] Speaker 2: continue to do really well on defense, Having those edges
[48:20] Speaker 2: was paramount and getting the best edge in the portal.
[48:23] Speaker 2: And Damon Wilson, who like this is just cherry on
[48:26] Speaker 2: top of a career right, showed promise that Georgia came
[48:29] Speaker 2: through for Miszoo was a menace for the Tigers last
[48:32] Speaker 2: year and should continue to be a problem for everybody
[48:37] Speaker 2: on this ACC schedule and beyond for Miami. And the
[48:40] Speaker 2: schedule's pretty great for Miami. And Damon Wilson, I would say,
[48:45] Speaker 2: is already a star and will shine for the U.
[48:48] Speaker 2: So now, unlike some of our other earlier picks, he
[48:51] Speaker 2: is not a semi savior because he is just looking
[48:55] Speaker 2: to basically replicate the dominance of the guys coming off
[48:58] Speaker 2: the edge last year. But I don't know in terms
[49:01] Speaker 2: of name recognition and guys affecting games with their gravity,
[49:06] Speaker 2: Damon Wilson's that guy from Miami.
[49:08] Speaker 3: Yeah, he's not like the edge setter when it comes
[49:12] Speaker 3: to playing the run right. No, his strength is very
[49:15] Speaker 3: much rushing the passer. But I don't think they're gonna
[49:17] Speaker 3: ask him to be a run stopper now. They're gonna
[49:19] Speaker 3: ask him to play downhill the way Corey Heatherman likes
[49:24] Speaker 3: and get after the passer. One question I had for
[49:27] Speaker 3: you on this one though, third school in three years.
[49:30] Speaker 2: Does that bother you? Not?
[49:35] Speaker 1: Not when you're this good. I don't know, because I
[49:38] Speaker 1: know that gives you the he b GVS. Sometimes when
[49:40] Speaker 1: we talk these three guys who jump in does frequently.
[49:43] Speaker 2: Quarterback, it gives it to me that on edge, like
[49:49] Speaker 2: he was a rotation guy at Georgia, he was the
[49:50] Speaker 2: guy at Miszoo. Maybe he just didn't like being at Missoo.
[49:53] Speaker 2: It's not my favorite thing. I would much rather him
[49:57] Speaker 2: move on to the NFL as a Missoo legend or
[49:59] Speaker 2: something like that, or a Georgia legend. It's always better
[50:02] Speaker 2: to me when a player has like a clear developmental
[50:06] Speaker 2: arc at the same place. But I don't know. Man,
[50:10] Speaker 2: At a certain point, if Miami's writing stupid checks, you'd
[50:13] Speaker 2: be stupid not to take them. And I don't know
[50:17] Speaker 2: the exact circumstance of why it didn't work out for
[50:19] Speaker 2: him either financially or athletically at Miszoo. But this one,
[50:23] Speaker 2: you watch him play. If he's not a horrible dude
[50:26] Speaker 2: in the locker room, I don't know, man via condios.
[50:30] Speaker 1: Via condio, Sorry, my turn.
[50:34] Speaker 3: Slipping over the defensive side of the ball. You're talking
[50:36] Speaker 3: about edge. Let's talk about my guy, Chas Manicats. Please,
[50:40] Speaker 3: that's what I'm gonna call him, Chaz Coleman going from
[50:43] Speaker 3: Penn State to Tennessee. I purposely tried to stay away
[50:45] Speaker 3: from some of the five stars. What do you say,
[50:47] Speaker 3: man of Cats, Chas Manicats?
[50:50] Speaker 2: Why Manacat.
[50:51] Speaker 3: It's a long story. It's sort of an inside joke
[50:54] Speaker 3: with me and some pen staters.
[50:55] Speaker 2: You're giving him a nickname that you refuse to explain
[51:00] Speaker 2: inside story to nobody listening. That's right, Okay, good decision.
[51:05] Speaker 1: Chas Man.
[51:05] Speaker 3: You know what we love Chazz on this show, All
[51:07] Speaker 3: things Chazz, of course. But Chas Coleman aka Chas Manicats
[51:12] Speaker 3: going to Tennessee is going to play with Jim Knowles again.
[51:15] Speaker 3: So he's from Ohio. There was talk after the firing
[51:20] Speaker 3: of James Franklin that he was going to go back
[51:22] Speaker 3: to Ohio State, but he decides he's going to go
[51:24] Speaker 3: to Tennessee instead. He's a freak. He was a true
[51:26] Speaker 3: freshman a year ago. Doesn't have a whole lot of
[51:30] Speaker 3: production to lean back on, but again, was a true freshman.
[51:34] Speaker 3: Everything is there. Everyone wanted this guy. I think LSU
[51:38] Speaker 3: was after him as well. Everybody wanted Chas Coleman because
[51:42] Speaker 3: of what he profiles to be, which is the next
[51:45] Speaker 3: star edge rusher. We know there's a bit of a
[51:47] Speaker 3: pipeline for that right now at Tennessee. There has been
[51:50] Speaker 3: over the last couple of years. They've been pretty good
[51:52] Speaker 3: at putting guys in the NFL. Chas Coleman could be
[51:56] Speaker 3: the next one of those.
[51:57] Speaker 2: And it was definitely going to be the next one
[51:59] Speaker 2: of those at Penn State when you look at dds
[52:02] Speaker 2: and Abdul Carter and everybody one percent who came before him.
[52:05] Speaker 1: Yeah, one hundred percent.
[52:07] Speaker 3: And among the guys that we are listing off here,
[52:10] Speaker 3: he might be the most physically gifted.
[52:14] Speaker 1: He's just a freak.
[52:15] Speaker 3: He's gonna be if I don't know if he's already
[52:17] Speaker 3: on Bruce Feldman's freaks list, he will be on that
[52:19] Speaker 3: list before long.
[52:21] Speaker 1: So the fact that.
[52:22] Speaker 3: You're putting him in a scheme again, following a coordinator
[52:27] Speaker 3: to his next stop in Jim Knowles. Jim Knowles was
[52:29] Speaker 3: all about Chaz Coleman almost from the jump, from the
[52:33] Speaker 3: second he got to State College and started coaching these
[52:36] Speaker 3: guys up. He was talking about Chas Coleman. Penn Staters
[52:39] Speaker 3: were excited about Chas Coleman. I was freaked out to
[52:42] Speaker 3: lose Chaz Coleman as a Penn Stater myself, But it
[52:46] Speaker 3: seems as though this is another one of those situations
[52:48] Speaker 3: that's just ready made for him to step in and explode.
[52:52] Speaker 3: So I'm curious to see what this looks like. I'm
[52:54] Speaker 3: excited to see what he looks like now with hopefully
[52:56] Speaker 3: a little bit more playing time to kind of take
[52:59] Speaker 3: front State Center.
[53:01] Speaker 2: Agree, I uh, yeah, I don't have anything to add
[53:05] Speaker 2: to it except for Tennessee's defense was kind of a
[53:08] Speaker 2: disaster last year, and a lot of that had to
[53:10] Speaker 2: do with injuries and maybe some transfers not working out.
[53:13] Speaker 2: But this is a team that has recruited well enough,
[53:17] Speaker 2: and if you are adding that type of game changer
[53:20] Speaker 2: on the edge, it spells, you know, gravitational advantage for
[53:24] Speaker 2: everybody around him, whether it's guys on the interior line,
[53:27] Speaker 2: whether it's an offense changing, it's the way that it
[53:30] Speaker 2: operates because of Chas Coleman.
[53:32] Speaker 3: He's just he has all the moves. He has all
[53:34] Speaker 3: the moves. He's got to think they schal tools. He
[53:37] Speaker 3: could drop in a coverage if you need him to
[53:38] Speaker 3: play cut like. He can do it all. And I
[53:41] Speaker 3: think this is a really exciting fit for Tennessee. So
[53:45] Speaker 3: great see what you can do in the SEC players sound.
[53:50] Speaker 2: Who we got Devin Tompkins. This one's super interesting to
[53:55] Speaker 2: me because I think he was a little bit out
[53:57] Speaker 2: of position at USC. Came in as a basketball player
[54:00] Speaker 2: like six', five two hundred or two twenty or something like,
[54:03] Speaker 2: that ended up playing closer to three hundred pounds this
[54:05] Speaker 2: past year and playing on the inside a whole. LOT
[54:08] Speaker 2: i think he's best served playing as like a really
[54:11] Speaker 2: big edge or three to five technique or something like
[54:15] Speaker 2: that in the right. System is When, alabama who very
[54:19] Speaker 2: much is overhauling, things not overhauling necessarily because they have
[54:23] Speaker 2: a bunch of rotation guys back from last, year but
[54:25] Speaker 2: in terms of the star power in that front, seven
[54:27] Speaker 2: a lot of new names in, face especially in the linebacking,
[54:30] Speaker 2: corps so all the more reason to attack and find
[54:34] Speaker 2: bigger dudes on the defensive. Line they bring Over Devin
[54:36] Speaker 2: tompkins FROM Usc Terrence, green who was a literally large
[54:40] Speaker 2: rotation piece for This oregon defensive line last. Season so
[54:45] Speaker 2: As alabama looks to get back to the, playoff get
[54:49] Speaker 2: back to you, know a top ten twelve type, defense
[54:53] Speaker 2: somebody Like Devin, tompkins who at his best can be quite, disruptive,
[54:57] Speaker 2: penetrating you, know just collapsing. Lanes, AGAIN i DON'T i
[55:01] Speaker 2: wouldn't count on him to sort of hold the point
[55:04] Speaker 2: of attack type large defensive, lineman but obvious passing downs
[55:08] Speaker 2: and potential. MISMATCHES i think he is quite necessarily especially
[55:13] Speaker 2: when you look at like Who alabama may have been
[55:16] Speaker 2: counting on to come back and left the. PROGRAM i
[55:20] Speaker 2: Think Devin tompkins should have an opportunity to make a
[55:23] Speaker 2: ton of plays for This alabama defense upfront and when
[55:28] Speaker 2: WHEN i think used correctly AT usc was a huge
[55:31] Speaker 2: weapon for The trojans and another guy THAT i THINK
[55:33] Speaker 2: usc fans were sad to, lose especially when he was
[55:36] Speaker 2: playing in the right.
[55:36] Speaker 3: Spot he gives them a little bit of versatility in
[55:40] Speaker 3: the interior defensive.
[55:41] Speaker 1: Line as he pointed out, right came in as the edge.
[55:43] Speaker 2: PROSPECT i think is better playing closer to the edge
[55:46] Speaker 2: than playing inside.
[55:47] Speaker 3: Though, yeah kind of like a heavy end yes style.
[55:50] Speaker 3: Player you're. RIGHT i mean they Lose Tim, keenan they
[55:54] Speaker 3: lose Lt Overton Kean keeley. Transfer they needed help all
[55:58] Speaker 3: on the, line and so this is a dude who
[56:01] Speaker 3: could come in and they can kind of use him
[56:03] Speaker 3: as like a little bit of a chess piece up.
[56:05] Speaker 3: Front you, know how do you want to play? Him
[56:07] Speaker 3: he gives them a little bit of versatility in the
[56:09] Speaker 3: way that they can deploy, him and, frankly it's somebody
[56:12] Speaker 3: that they needed to get to try and helple on
[56:15] Speaker 3: that defensive. Front so you like these guys who were
[56:18] Speaker 3: former basketball, players if you like their former basketball.
[56:22] Speaker 1: Players but the, buzz.
[56:24] Speaker 3: At least in the early going now spring practice From Kane,
[56:27] Speaker 3: wamick has been glowing About. Tompkins so if that's to be,
[56:31] Speaker 3: BELIEVED i think there's a lot to like. Here you
[56:35] Speaker 3: could see some really nice production out of him on
[56:38] Speaker 3: that defensive.
[56:38] Speaker 1: Front next, Next i'm going to shift my gaze to. Linebacker,
[56:48] Speaker 1: Oh i'm about to as.
[56:49] Speaker 2: Well, Continue let's.
[56:51] Speaker 3: Talk about my, Guy Austin, ROMAINE, Ah Kansas state, Legend
[56:56] Speaker 3: Kansas state.
[56:57] Speaker 1: Legend what was my? Thing you'll you'll only run on
[57:01] Speaker 1: us if we let. US i don't. KNOW i had
[57:03] Speaker 1: a Dumb lettuce joked it related to his. NAME i remember.
[57:07] Speaker 1: You i'm not proud of, That.
[57:08] Speaker 2: OKAY i can only assume he's moving on To Texas
[57:10] Speaker 2: tech in this.
[57:11] Speaker 3: Region he is going To Texas. Tech K state The Texas.
[57:13] Speaker 3: Tech one final note on The lettuce. JOKE i BELIEVE
[57:17] Speaker 3: i got a note from our Friend John kurtz who
[57:19] Speaker 3: loved The lettus.
[57:20] Speaker 2: Joke Soot John.
[57:23] Speaker 3: Kurtz but, yeah at least there's. One Look Austin romain
[57:26] Speaker 3: before he got. Hurt before he had the hand, injury
[57:30] Speaker 3: missed a couple of games at the end of the
[57:31] Speaker 3: season and opted for. Surgery he remained one of those
[57:36] Speaker 3: mainstays on The Kansas state. Team he has been crazy
[57:40] Speaker 3: productive and somebody who figures to slide right in. It
[57:44] Speaker 3: maybe not replace like for like What Texas tech is
[57:48] Speaker 3: losing at linebacker with J, rod but definitely somebody they
[57:52] Speaker 3: compare next To Ben. Roberts somebody they compare next to
[57:55] Speaker 3: the others that they brought in on that defense and
[57:57] Speaker 3: be pretty much immediately a standard. Out so to kind
[58:02] Speaker 3: of lose a guy Like Jay rod and bring this
[58:04] Speaker 3: guy in is crazy to. Me What i'm interested to
[58:07] Speaker 3: see is how Shield wood uses, him, right BECAUSE i
[58:11] Speaker 3: think they're going to use him a little bit differently
[58:13] Speaker 3: than he was used at K. State they're going to
[58:15] Speaker 3: move him around a little bit. More Sheil wood believes
[58:17] Speaker 3: in this system where he's trying to teach all the
[58:19] Speaker 3: linebackers everything they need to know about all the linebacker.
[58:22] Speaker 3: Positions we saw that a little bit last. Year it
[58:25] Speaker 3: worked to great, effect. RIGHT i mean how good they
[58:29] Speaker 3: were on defense is sort of proof. Enough so this
[58:33] Speaker 3: is a high production, guy a long track record for
[58:36] Speaker 3: being very productive provided the hand heels. Up provided the
[58:41] Speaker 3: hand heels, up there aren't any lingering issues that type of.
[58:45] Speaker 3: Thing this is one of those guys who's going to
[58:49] Speaker 3: step into and almost immediately be one.
[58:51] Speaker 1: Of the best linebackers in the, conference if not the. Country.
[58:53] Speaker 2: Wow, yeah he's.
[58:55] Speaker 1: Good he's really. Good.
[58:56] Speaker 2: Yeah and he's and he's not going to be the
[58:58] Speaker 2: focal point because there is to be so much good
[59:01] Speaker 2: on This Texas tech especially up. Front they seem to
[59:04] Speaker 2: have replaced a good amount of the production that they,
[59:07] Speaker 2: lose which is tough when you look at you know.
[59:09] Speaker 2: What you, Know David bailey was on the edge And
[59:11] Speaker 2: Jacob rodriguez at. Linebacker BUT i don't. KNOW i think
[59:15] Speaker 2: he's gonna be able to run pretty.
[59:16] Speaker 3: Fuch just one of these guys that you hear it
[59:18] Speaker 3: often at the linebacker, position the quarterback of the. Defense
[59:21] Speaker 3: he's he's that type of, leader and he's really good
[59:24] Speaker 3: at stopping the, run really good at like recognizing the
[59:27] Speaker 3: running game almost the second it it goes. Down So
[59:30] Speaker 3: I'm i'm pretty excited to see what the guy looks.
[59:32] Speaker 2: Like so the instant, impact hope is he is nearly
[59:36] Speaker 2: as good as the guy he's. Replacing you would.
[59:39] Speaker 3: Take that Because Jay rod was A heisman finalist.
[59:42] Speaker 1: There, yeah he's. Everywhere, Yeah so, okay where are we?
[59:46] Speaker 1: Going next? Player, Sold.
[59:49] Speaker 2: We're gonna go To. SAMMY i HOPE i get this.
[59:51] Speaker 2: Right But sammy almost see, almost sigo almost seek.
[59:55] Speaker 1: Almost i'm just gonna sit here and let you. Try.
[59:58] Speaker 2: SAMMY i practiced. IT i look up a really good
[1:00:01] Speaker 2: rotation inside linebacker For oklahoma last. Year, OBVIOUSLY i don't
[1:00:05] Speaker 2: even know if the Owen heinike saga is. COMPLETE i
[1:00:08] Speaker 2: think he's still trying to play while also training for
[1:00:11] Speaker 2: THE Nfl. Draft, okay But oklahoma's got a bunch of
[1:00:15] Speaker 2: good inside linebackers and it looks LIKE ucla is his
[1:00:18] Speaker 2: path to starting really really good as a rotation dude
[1:00:23] Speaker 2: and has an opportunity AT, ucla who brought in seven
[1:00:26] Speaker 2: hundred and forty four new players Under Bob chesney to
[1:00:29] Speaker 2: hopefully improve. Things but you look at What James madison
[1:00:34] Speaker 2: was able to. DO i think it Was Trent hendrick
[1:00:36] Speaker 2: was An All Sun belt linebacker and was everywhere for THAT,
[1:00:39] Speaker 2: jmu like an, outstanding OUTSTANDING jmu, defense great against the.
[1:00:42] Speaker 2: Run That sammy could be the heartbeat of a much
[1:00:48] Speaker 2: IMPROVED ucla. Defense he will have every. Opportunity, look it's
[1:00:52] Speaker 2: basically an entirely new defense via the. Portal and when
[1:00:56] Speaker 2: you watch him, Play i'll just keep calling Him. Sammy
[1:00:59] Speaker 2: when you Watch sammy play and the plays he made
[1:01:01] Speaker 2: For oklahoma and they rotated their linebackers a bunch last.
[1:01:04] Speaker 2: Year he was not loading up on stats Against temple
[1:01:08] Speaker 2: Or Eastern michigan or. SOMETHING i don't even know if
[1:01:10] Speaker 2: they Played Eastern, michigan but they definitely Played. Temple but
[1:01:12] Speaker 2: he was making plays Against. Michigan he was making plays
[1:01:15] Speaker 2: Against Ole miss In South. Carolina like take your pick
[1:01:18] Speaker 2: from This oklahoma, schedule and there's a burst to him
[1:01:22] Speaker 2: both rushing the passer and being patient and looking at
[1:01:25] Speaker 2: where plays are developing too THAT i think he just
[1:01:28] Speaker 2: immediately makes the middle of THIS ucla defense high. Quality
[1:01:34] Speaker 2: it's not a game changer in that he is another
[1:01:37] Speaker 2: piece on a stacked defense like he would have been
[1:01:40] Speaker 2: put potentially if he had stuck Around. Oklahoma you, know
[1:01:42] Speaker 2: had a bigger role At, oklahoma but was At Kip.
[1:01:45] Speaker 2: Lewis you, know there's just a wall there at starting
[1:01:48] Speaker 2: inside linebacker that's going to be hard to sort of.
[1:01:51] Speaker 2: SUMMIT i don't. Know he looks like he is just
[1:01:54] Speaker 2: ready to finish a season with one hundred and thirteen
[1:01:58] Speaker 2: tackles for A ucla team that's probably gonna need somebody
[1:02:01] Speaker 2: to need somebody fill up that stat sheet at tackle that.
[1:02:04] Speaker 2: Tackles but he's he looks really really.
[1:02:07] Speaker 3: Good can go side to, side has a ton of,
[1:02:11] Speaker 3: range can play the, pass, yes which is good if
[1:02:15] Speaker 3: you need to use him in the. Slot, whatever AND i,
[1:02:18] Speaker 3: believe if memory, serves he was in the portal like
[1:02:23] Speaker 3: four nanoseconds After oklahoma brought Down Cole sullivan From, michigan.
[1:02:28] Speaker 3: RIGHT i think that was the chronology of. Events so
[1:02:32] Speaker 3: this is a.
[1:02:32] Speaker 1: Big get FOR.
[1:02:33] Speaker 3: Ucla you sent me a video of Of Bob chesney
[1:02:37] Speaker 3: earlier talking about in and.
[1:02:39] Speaker 1: OUT i think you've got a thing For Bob.
[1:02:40] Speaker 2: Chesney Bob, chesney aside from like the personality stuff in
[1:02:45] Speaker 2: the Clips i've seen of him speaking to the, team
[1:02:49] Speaker 2: just you're, Like, man if this guy doesn't work out AT,
[1:02:52] Speaker 2: ucla it's not going to be for a lack of
[1:02:54] Speaker 2: effort or. Commitment like he just seems like he is
[1:02:59] Speaker 2: one of those do who will connect really well with his,
[1:03:02] Speaker 2: players with his, staff with the people that worked for the,
[1:03:05] Speaker 2: program and it's for, him it's just going to be
[1:03:08] Speaker 2: like how well can he convince the money behind the
[1:03:11] Speaker 2: scenes AT. Ucla it looks like he's done a decent
[1:03:13] Speaker 2: job so far to open up the purse strings and
[1:03:17] Speaker 2: open up the bank accounts for you, know portaling the
[1:03:20] Speaker 2: years to come for whatever it is That West Coast
[1:03:23] Speaker 2: recruitment has in mind FOR. Ucla but it's almost Sego
[1:03:27] Speaker 2: by the way it's how you pronounced the last. Name but,
[1:03:31] Speaker 2: yeah And oklahoma lost another big linebacker WHO i think
[1:03:33] Speaker 2: was better against the run of the past To, northwestern
[1:03:35] Speaker 2: another high profile. Dude so it's a good problem to
[1:03:38] Speaker 2: have At oklahoma that you're so good at, attracting, evaluating
[1:03:42] Speaker 2: and developing linebackers that they just have to find somewhere
[1:03:45] Speaker 2: else to play because so many dudes are performing at
[1:03:48] Speaker 2: a high. Level but, YEAH i Think sammy Almost sego
[1:03:51] Speaker 2: is going to be very good for The. Bruins Kid
[1:03:58] Speaker 2: uluave speaking of yeah man.
[1:04:04] Speaker 3: Number one portal linebacker makes. Sense Leaving cal going TO
[1:04:10] Speaker 3: byu is a huge get FOR. BYU byu might have
[1:04:13] Speaker 3: one of the better linebacking groups in all the, country
[1:04:16] Speaker 3: if not the conference.
[1:04:17] Speaker 2: Agree they did last year for.
[1:04:18] Speaker 3: Sure he grew up thirty miles FROM. Byu he is
[1:04:23] Speaker 3: now going TO byu for his final. Season he had
[1:04:26] Speaker 3: one hundred tackles a year. Ago he is truly a
[1:04:29] Speaker 3: do it all kind of, linebacker one of these downhill,
[1:04:33] Speaker 3: linebackers the type of guy who hits you and you're
[1:04:35] Speaker 3: gonna see like helmets. Plyoff so you add that into
[1:04:39] Speaker 3: a linebacking room that again is very very.
[1:04:41] Speaker 1: Good he brings.
[1:04:43] Speaker 3: Leadership he's like a film, junkie another one of these
[1:04:47] Speaker 3: quarterback quarterback of the defense.
[1:04:50] Speaker 2: Types you're hitting fantasy things in advance to get in
[1:04:54] Speaker 2: the minds of announcers so that when you ultimately take
[1:04:58] Speaker 2: he's the quarterback of the, Defense you're, LIKE i don't
[1:05:01] Speaker 2: know where that came. FROM i GUESS i just MAYBE
[1:05:03] Speaker 2: i said it On march eighteenth or. Something, quarterback you,
[1:05:06] Speaker 2: know sideline to sideline.
[1:05:08] Speaker 3: Continue i'm just going to try and play a little
[1:05:10] Speaker 3: word association.
[1:05:11] Speaker 2: Here try and keep him out of the film.
[1:05:13] Speaker 3: Room get it, going you, know like If Kirk kurvestreet
[1:05:16] Speaker 3: wants to talk about pinning your ears back and going
[1:05:18] Speaker 3: after the, offense this is a guy who heard. That.
[1:05:21] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[1:05:22] Speaker 1: AGREE i just think he's a.
[1:05:24] Speaker 3: STUD i think he's a, stud AND i love What
[1:05:28] Speaker 3: byu did in bringing him. DOWN i think he's somebody
[1:05:31] Speaker 3: that they can slot in. Immediately and he's just like
[1:05:33] Speaker 3: A swiss army. Knife you, know he's not the type
[1:05:37] Speaker 3: of guy who you need to teach discipline.
[1:05:39] Speaker 1: Too he's very good at play. Recognition you will slot
[1:05:42] Speaker 1: him in and expect high level production almost. Immediately. Yeah,
[1:05:46] Speaker 1: slam duck. Slam dun. Agree give me your defensive, Back.
[1:05:52] Speaker 2: John Tess WILLIAMS. Usc, yeah man From Iowa. STATE usc
[1:05:56] Speaker 2: brings back corner, experience loses safety star power highlighted By
[1:06:01] Speaker 2: Kamari ramsey went healthy last. Season they've got a lot
[1:06:04] Speaker 2: of good names along the defensive. Line linebacker will, see
[1:06:08] Speaker 2: we'll see like who is the star along the defensive.
[1:06:11] Speaker 2: Line but when you look AT usc schedule and you
[1:06:13] Speaker 2: look at the potential wide receiver matchups At, Oregon, Washington
[1:06:18] Speaker 2: rutgers and kJ Duff Ohio state obviously And Jeremiah smith
[1:06:22] Speaker 2: and who knows who gets matched up on. Who BUT
[1:06:25] Speaker 2: usc needed more at, corner and they went out and
[1:06:28] Speaker 2: they GOT i think he was the best corner available
[1:06:31] Speaker 2: in this portal. Class he was. Down you told me
[1:06:34] Speaker 2: this BETWEEN usc And Notre, dame so you were familiar
[1:06:36] Speaker 2: with his decision. MAKING i, guess and was great At
[1:06:42] Speaker 2: Iowa state TOWARDS. Acl but when on the, field you,
[1:06:47] Speaker 2: know you watch, Me you're, like, MAN i WISH i
[1:06:50] Speaker 2: wish the team were in your, case teams THAT i
[1:06:52] Speaker 2: root for had more Of John Tez williams just like
[1:06:56] Speaker 2: always positioned correctly to attack the. Ball good in the
[1:06:59] Speaker 2: old open field as a, tackler just, dependable closing speed is, great,
[1:07:05] Speaker 2: physical doesn't back down from bigger. Receivers a decent, SIZE
[1:07:09] Speaker 2: i think he's five to eleven or six feet somewhere around,
[1:07:11] Speaker 2: there but immediately MAKES usc better in the. Secondary Gary
[1:07:16] Speaker 2: patterson has obviously been a part of developing some really
[1:07:19] Speaker 2: good corners AT. Tcu it's been a, minute but should
[1:07:24] Speaker 2: have opportunities to thrive and yet another NEW usc defensive.
[1:07:28] Speaker 2: System and there are some changes along THE usc coaching
[1:07:31] Speaker 2: staff outside Of Gary. Patterson obviously some assistants have come and.
[1:07:35] Speaker 2: Gone BUT i just think he has set up for
[1:07:39] Speaker 2: success provided his knee is in a good.
[1:07:41] Speaker 3: Place, yeah the knee health will be. Something the other
[1:07:45] Speaker 3: thing that you didn't. Mention this is a very YOUNG
[1:07:49] Speaker 3: usc secondary this, year, yes and so to bring a
[1:07:51] Speaker 3: guy in like this who's got a couple of years starting,
[1:07:54] Speaker 3: experience it's valuable to have that veteran. Leadership and you,
[1:07:58] Speaker 3: know he was the top cornerback in effect in this portal.
[1:08:02] Speaker 1: Class it did hurt For Notre dame to. LOSER i
[1:08:04] Speaker 1: Know Notre dame wanted, him so the fact they lost
[1:08:07] Speaker 1: him THE usc was kind of A.
[1:08:08] Speaker 2: I would have been a healthy Partner joel With Leonard.
[1:08:11] Speaker 1: Moore, right, absolutely SO i like this move off FOR.
[1:08:16] Speaker 3: USC i you know what it looks like now With
[1:08:19] Speaker 3: Gary patterson and how that translates after he's been out
[1:08:23] Speaker 3: of the game for a couple of years will be
[1:08:24] Speaker 3: interesting in kind of its own. Headline but at least
[1:08:28] Speaker 3: getting a guy like this on campus is a pretty big. Deal.
[1:08:31] Speaker 3: Yep final one for, Me please we talk About Notre.
[1:08:37] Speaker 3: Dame let's talk ABOUT dj.
[1:08:38] Speaker 2: McKinney, okay More. Colorado.
[1:08:42] Speaker 3: YES dj McKinney played Opposite Travis hunter At. Colorado, yeah
[1:08:48] Speaker 3: there IS i think an open question about his stat,
[1:08:52] Speaker 3: line and the open question is is he as good
[1:08:58] Speaker 3: as he looked or did he benefit from basically quarterbacks
[1:09:04] Speaker 3: who just wanted to throw Opposite Travis hunter and maybe
[1:09:06] Speaker 3: made some bad decisions in the. Process but that being,
[1:09:09] Speaker 3: said he very much fits the mold of What Notre
[1:09:12] Speaker 3: dame has been building at, cornerback which is long, corners
[1:09:16] Speaker 3: physical corners who can play that style of football that
[1:09:20] Speaker 3: we've seen out Of Leonard, moore that we've seen out
[1:09:22] Speaker 3: Of Christian. Gray i'm not the world's Biggest Christian gray,
[1:09:25] Speaker 3: fan so IF dj McKinney can slot in and maybe
[1:09:29] Speaker 3: bump him over to the slot or into more of
[1:09:32] Speaker 3: a rotational.
[1:09:32] Speaker 1: Role i'd be cool with.
[1:09:34] Speaker 3: That it'll be really interesting to me to see how
[1:09:37] Speaker 3: they USE dj, McKinney how they Use Christian, gray how
[1:09:41] Speaker 3: they Use Jaden, sanders who they also got From.
[1:09:44] Speaker 1: Michigan they have some options.
[1:09:45] Speaker 3: Here Notre dame was at a spot coming into this
[1:09:47] Speaker 3: portal class where the quality was already really. Good they
[1:09:52] Speaker 3: just needed more, quantity they needed some, depth and so
[1:09:55] Speaker 3: it took them a little bit to get. Going but,
[1:09:57] Speaker 3: eventually once they, did they brought in a couple guys
[1:09:59] Speaker 3: THAT i think can can. Play he's a big, guy
[1:10:02] Speaker 3: he's like six to, two he's won. EIGHTY i, mean
[1:10:04] Speaker 3: he very much fits that mold for. Them there aren't
[1:10:07] Speaker 3: a whole lot of killers on This Notre dame. Schedule and,
[1:10:10] Speaker 3: again speaking of things that.
[1:10:11] Speaker 2: Could let me write this, down speaking.
[1:10:13] Speaker 3: Of things that could be their own podcast episode, altogether
[1:10:17] Speaker 3: that's one of. Them, yeah so in, theory he should
[1:10:20] Speaker 3: thrive pretty.
[1:10:20] Speaker 2: Well, okay in this.
[1:10:23] Speaker 1: System oh we'll, see we shall all, right real, quick real.
[1:10:28] Speaker 1: Quick some other names that popped.
[1:10:30] Speaker 3: UP i just want to get your quick reaction to
[1:10:33] Speaker 3: these let's say five. Names, Okay kenny minsche At. Kentucky
[1:10:38] Speaker 3: this one came in via For bawlers Dot.
[1:10:41] Speaker 2: Com, yeah Will stein has had success with. Quarterbacks it's
[1:10:44] Speaker 2: gonna be a question of who is surrounded by and
[1:10:46] Speaker 2: how we. Response for the first time as being the
[1:10:49] Speaker 2: dude at a big.
[1:10:50] Speaker 3: PLACE i HAD Dj lagway down on my. LIST i
[1:10:54] Speaker 3: swapped it out For Aaron. Filo, Yeah filo Replaces, lagway
[1:11:00] Speaker 3: who goes To. Baylor this is somebody who's got a
[1:11:03] Speaker 3: family connection To. BAYLOR i am really interested in this.
[1:11:07] Speaker 3: Signing first, OFF i thought maybe that he would go,
[1:11:09] Speaker 3: elsewhere but he ended up a. Bailor i'm not sure
[1:11:13] Speaker 3: that this system fits him because based on what we
[1:11:17] Speaker 3: saw out Of lagway last, year he struggled with a
[1:11:21] Speaker 3: lot of the things THAT i Think Jake spavitol is
[1:11:23] Speaker 3: going to. Demand this is an air raid, system a
[1:11:27] Speaker 3: lot of pre snap, processing a lot of decision. Making
[1:11:31] Speaker 3: the physical tools are all there FOR Dj, lagway but
[1:11:35] Speaker 3: that side of this offense is definitely an area where
[1:11:38] Speaker 3: he needs some. Help so if he can improve the
[1:11:40] Speaker 3: skill talents there for, sure but some of this stuff
[1:11:44] Speaker 3: needs to get better in order for this to. Pop the,
[1:11:47] Speaker 3: WAY i Think baylor fans would want it. To SO
[1:11:50] Speaker 3: i LIKE Dj lagway by all. Accounts he's a, good
[1:11:53] Speaker 3: very coachable. Player you, know he is in town to
[1:11:58] Speaker 3: try and improve his, game for, Sure but fourteen interceptions last,
[1:12:02] Speaker 3: year some games more ugly than. Others there's definitely some
[1:12:06] Speaker 3: room for improvement. Here so we'll see what this looks.
[1:12:08] Speaker 2: Like, yeah and, also Like, Sawyer robertson had good counting,
[1:12:12] Speaker 2: stats had over thirty touchdowns and went over three hundred
[1:12:14] Speaker 2: yards a. Game he did not destroy teams with, efficiency you,
[1:12:19] Speaker 2: know it's a lot of quick. Stuff you, know really
[1:12:21] Speaker 2: struggled had you, know bad interception games as, Well and
[1:12:24] Speaker 2: so we'll see. That it's just a change of scenery
[1:12:27] Speaker 2: that helps things FOR Dj.
[1:12:28] Speaker 1: Lagway Anthony, Calandria.
[1:12:32] Speaker 2: Yeah part of the. Dominoes, YEAH i love this For.
[1:12:37] Speaker 3: Nebraska, ACTUALLY i Love Anthony, calandria So i'm. Biased, okay
[1:12:42] Speaker 3: he had a good year last. Year he h had
[1:12:44] Speaker 3: a really good year last year with you AND. Lv
[1:12:47] Speaker 3: this is interesting to me because he is kind of
[1:12:51] Speaker 3: like a chaos, quarterback you, know like he's best as an.
[1:12:55] Speaker 3: Improviser when things break, down that's when he. Thrives and
[1:12:59] Speaker 3: SO i just think you pair a guy like that
[1:13:02] Speaker 3: with somebody Like Dana, holgerson, who for as long as
[1:13:06] Speaker 3: we've been doing this, SHOW i would probably label some
[1:13:11] Speaker 3: of What Dana holgerson does is chaotic and.
[1:13:13] Speaker 1: Different AND i don't.
[1:13:16] Speaker 3: KNOW i think this could be a really interesting. Pairing
[1:13:19] Speaker 3: he's definitely more of a dual threat guy THAN i
[1:13:22] Speaker 3: think they had last year With Dylan, roola and it
[1:13:25] Speaker 3: seems to me Like holgerson could work with. That So
[1:13:28] Speaker 3: i'm curious to see at the end of, time like
[1:13:30] Speaker 3: when we're doing the show year from, Now i'm curious
[1:13:32] Speaker 3: to see in, reality how, big if, any of a
[1:13:36] Speaker 3: downgrade we see going From royola To.
[1:13:39] Speaker 1: Calandria here's ALL i can.
[1:13:41] Speaker 2: SAY i don't think we've ever USED i don't think
[1:13:45] Speaker 2: we've ever constructed the sentence. Man this Year's Matt rule
[1:13:49] Speaker 2: offense is. Explosive Dana holgerson's reputation precedes Him Matt rule team. Offenses,
[1:13:57] Speaker 2: yeah never really get anybody super, Excited.
[1:14:01] Speaker 1: Tye, no.
[1:14:03] Speaker 2: You're not going to have to go to the doctor
[1:14:06] Speaker 2: after four hours of watching A Matt rule offense right,
[1:14:09] Speaker 2: Now it's just not gonna. Happen, okay, next next?
[1:14:12] Speaker 1: One, here Is Darien.
[1:14:14] Speaker 2: Menson, YEAH i just don't think he's going to have
[1:14:18] Speaker 2: an impact that is different than What Carson beck's. Was
[1:14:21] Speaker 2: Carson beck was very. Good Darian mensa should be very.
[1:14:23] Speaker 3: GOOD i think he's somewhere between Cam ward And Carson
[1:14:27] Speaker 3: beck his coll, set it's somewhere in.
[1:14:30] Speaker 2: Between there probably has a better elbow coming into the,
[1:14:34] Speaker 2: season a better.
[1:14:35] Speaker 1: Elbow.
[1:14:36] Speaker 2: YEAH i.
[1:14:37] Speaker 3: Know Shannon dawson in some of the articles THAT i,
[1:14:40] Speaker 3: saw has commented about how he's a little bit more
[1:14:46] Speaker 3: prone to playing efficiently than playing hero. Ball, yeah which
[1:14:51] Speaker 3: is definitely a little bit more on The Carson beck
[1:14:53] Speaker 3: side of the spectrum than Cam, ward who was all hero.
[1:14:56] Speaker 3: Ball So i'm curious to how this. WORKS i, mean
[1:14:59] Speaker 3: there's a ton of talent around. Him he is a very,
[1:15:02] Speaker 3: accurate highly efficient. Passer there's no REASON i think this won't.
[1:15:05] Speaker 3: Work that, said there are probably a lot of people
[1:15:08] Speaker 3: who are rooting, it rooting for it to go bust
[1:15:11] Speaker 3: because of the weird circumstances that brought him To miami
[1:15:14] Speaker 3: in the first prese but breaking the contract With, duke
[1:15:17] Speaker 3: the weird legal, stuff getting a crazy amount was it
[1:15:20] Speaker 3: like ten million dollars or something to go down To, miami.
[1:15:24] Speaker 1: We'll see what this looks.
[1:15:26] Speaker 3: Like But miami, continues at least on the surface to
[1:15:30] Speaker 3: add these quarterbacks who are going to perform at a
[1:15:32] Speaker 3: really high.
[1:15:32] Speaker 2: Level by the, way just in terms of The Darian mensa,
[1:15:35] Speaker 2: thing putting a ball on, that If miami doesn't have
[1:15:41] Speaker 2: one of the best four, three four five combinations of
[1:15:45] Speaker 2: quarterback receiver running back in the, country it means two
[1:15:49] Speaker 2: of them got. Hurt this Is, Malachai Tony Cooper barcade
[1:15:52] Speaker 2: over From duke as, Well Darien. Mensa was it Van
[1:15:56] Speaker 2: Drivius jones From South carolina who is a big play
[1:15:59] Speaker 2: dude along with the defense whatever like? This that the
[1:16:03] Speaker 2: combination of What miami has offensive skill wise is you
[1:16:08] Speaker 2: can count on a single. Hand maybe it might be top,
[1:16:11] Speaker 2: two three something in, there great position to be.
[1:16:14] Speaker 3: In, last but certily not at Least Culton joseph From Old,
[1:16:18] Speaker 3: Dominion oh good one as. WELL i Believe Colton joseph
[1:16:22] Speaker 3: had more rushing yards last season Than wisconsin did as a.
[1:16:26] Speaker 1: Team great, Good so that's a good.
[1:16:30] Speaker 3: Start he's sort of like the, premiere one of the
[1:16:34] Speaker 3: premiere duel threat guys in this portal. Class he's not
[1:16:39] Speaker 3: going to get top, billing but ran for a thousand
[1:16:43] Speaker 3: yards stand thirteen rushing touchdowns pretty.
[1:16:45] Speaker 2: Good had two big runs Against Indiana.
[1:16:47] Speaker 1: National CHAMP yep early part of the.
[1:16:49] Speaker 3: Season so how he factors into like The Jeff grime,
[1:16:53] Speaker 3: system which is a lot of play action and how
[1:16:58] Speaker 3: they use the skill so interesting to. See but there's
[1:17:01] Speaker 3: a lot riding on whether or not this, works much
[1:17:05] Speaker 3: the way there's a lot riding.
[1:17:06] Speaker 1: ON Dj lagway At baylor For Dave.
[1:17:08] Speaker 3: Randa Luke fickle and his trials and tribulations At wisconsin
[1:17:12] Speaker 3: are well documented at this, point and you could argue
[1:17:16] Speaker 3: that they only just kept him around because it was
[1:17:18] Speaker 3: too crowded a coaching market and they wanted to try
[1:17:21] Speaker 3: one more year to reinvest in nil and see if
[1:17:23] Speaker 3: he can make things. Go so he has not had
[1:17:25] Speaker 3: any luck at quarterback thus far in his time In.
[1:17:28] Speaker 2: Madison now Disagree Tanner mordecai when, healthy when totally good
[1:17:32] Speaker 2: quarterback for like three.
[1:17:33] Speaker 3: Games though you know he's had bad luck in one
[1:17:36] Speaker 3: way or another at the quarterback, position be it with
[1:17:39] Speaker 3: injuries or with the talent just not working. Out this
[1:17:42] Speaker 3: one's got a hit if he wants to stay In.
[1:17:44] Speaker 2: Madison, yeah it's just who's he throwing? To once again For,
[1:17:48] Speaker 2: wisconsin that remains the. Question who are the game changes
[1:17:51] Speaker 2: and the schedules not, horrible as we discussed a couple
[1:17:54] Speaker 2: of shows, ago but who's he throwing to that's going
[1:17:57] Speaker 2: to make him look? Good open question to.
[1:17:59] Speaker 3: Me right in solid verbal at gmail dot. Com let
[1:18:02] Speaker 3: us know your thoughts on these. Transfers we get a
