The suppressor doesn’t make the rifle — the barrel does. KJ sits down with Austin Orgain of Oklahoma Custom Barrels and Mike Aland of SilencerCo to explore why competitive shooters and serious hunters obsess over barrel quality, how the right suppressor host can tighten your groups and extend barrel life, and what NRL Hunter competitors run to stay ahead. Whether you’re chasing a podium finish or a public land buck, your barrel and suppressor setup matters more than you think. This Gun Talk Hunt is brought to you by Savage Arms, Vortex Optics, Shooting Sports Life, Smith & Wesson, Dead Air Silencers, EOTech, Range Ready Studios, and ZEISS Optics. [0:00] Speaker 1: I'm running from my first shooting point to my second
[0:04] Speaker 1: shooting point, and I have to jump a creek, and
[0:08] Speaker 1: I heard something hit.
[0:11] Speaker 2: You won't believe what it was. I'm KJ. You found
[0:16] Speaker 2: the right place.
[0:19] Speaker 1: We go all over this little blue orb, sharing stories
[0:22] Speaker 1: and tactics about chasing wild game.
[0:25] Speaker 2: Now, let's get on the hunt.
[0:32] Speaker 1: Welcome in all you gun talk hunters. I'm your host KJ.
[0:34] Speaker 1: And today we've got a really fun one. This is
[0:36] Speaker 1: going to, we're talking about summer camp and, and, and
[0:40] Speaker 1: I mean, I guess some of the scary stories that
[0:42] Speaker 1: came away from our summer camp media event from silencer
[0:44] Speaker 1: co and today on the show, we've got Mike Allen
[0:49] Speaker 1: of silencer co, and then we've got. Custom rifle barrels, Austin,
[0:55] Speaker 1: Oregon world champion. Like he's a champion of everything when
[0:58] Speaker 1: it comes to shooting a gun. So, uh, guys welcome in. Uh, well,
[1:04] Speaker 1: Austin's a fellow Oki like myself and like, literally like
[1:08] Speaker 1: we did not know each other before this summer camp event.
[1:12] Speaker 1: And I was like, I was, I had a feeling,
[1:14] Speaker 1: I was like, man, I think he's from Oklahoma. And
[1:16] Speaker 1: then he said he is from Hammond, Oklahoma, which is
[1:19] Speaker 1: literally like maybe 20 minutes down the road from my hometown.
[1:22] Speaker 1: So we grew up in close proximity to each other
[1:24] Speaker 1: and know the old same old stomping grounds. Uh, but
[1:29] Speaker 1: Mike summer camp, man, give us a rundown of what
[1:33] Speaker 1: summer camp, uh, silencer coast summer camp was about.
[1:37] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[1:37] Speaker 4: What we wanted to do is really highlight the facility,
[1:41] Speaker 4: the manufacturing process, and also our product line and kind
[1:45] Speaker 4: of a fun and unique way. So I think, uh,
[1:48] Speaker 4: I guess people either have really fun experiences looking back
[1:52] Speaker 4: in their youth at summer camp and maybe not some
[1:55] Speaker 4: good ones, but for the most part, we wanted to
[1:58] Speaker 4: create a unique event that we could bring writers out
[2:01] Speaker 4: to and really kind of show a little bit behind
[2:04] Speaker 4: the curtain. I think when a consumer goes to a
[2:08] Speaker 4: gun shop, they see a counter full of silencers from
[2:11] Speaker 4: different companies. Sometimes it's hard to understand the scale and the,
[2:15] Speaker 4: the company actually stands behind those products. So we wanted
[2:19] Speaker 4: to take a shop tour, see how, you know, everything
[2:24] Speaker 4: gets made. You know, pulling off near vertical integration in
[2:31] Speaker 4: today's world is really difficult. And we've chosen as a
[2:34] Speaker 4: company to go down a difficult path to make all
[2:37] Speaker 4: our own stuff. But we're proud of it. And we're
[2:41] Speaker 4: proud of the almost 400 employees. And, and we wanted
[2:45] Speaker 4: to show that to the world and, and give, uh,
[2:48] Speaker 4: not only the writers, but their, their followers, some exposure
[2:52] Speaker 4: as to like what we do and how we do it.
[2:55] Speaker 4: And then give a unique shooting experience that isn't just
[2:58] Speaker 4: go out and, you know, let's shoot a couple of
[3:01] Speaker 4: rounds through each can, but actually create some competition, uh,
[3:05] Speaker 4: with some high stakes prizes that would, uh, you know,
[3:08] Speaker 4: get people interested to, to shoot and learn about the
[3:11] Speaker 4: product line.
[3:12] Speaker 1: Well, I think it's easy to get, like, especially media guys.
[3:16] Speaker 1: It seems like it's easier to shoot when it's OPA,
[3:19] Speaker 1: when it's other people's ammo that you get to shoot
[3:22] Speaker 1: up and you get to really test the product out.
[3:24] Speaker 1: And having it over a couple of days makes more
[3:27] Speaker 1: sense than, you know, than it's like you go up
[3:32] Speaker 1: to a show and you shoot five rounds through it
[3:34] Speaker 1: and then it's over. All right, Austin, let's jump over
[3:36] Speaker 1: to you. Tell us a little bit about yourself.
[3:38] Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm Austin Dorgain.
[3:40] Speaker 6: I own Custom Rifle Barrels and a new company that
[3:44] Speaker 6: we're just getting ready to launch called Oklahoma Rifle Company
[3:47] Speaker 6: with a couple of other guys. I am a three-time
[3:51] Speaker 6: national champion, two-time world champion, 80-cup champion, precision rifle shooter, and.
[3:58] Speaker 5: I live out in western Oklahoma.
[3:59] Speaker 1: And if you know anything about Austin, if he is
[4:02] Speaker 1: in the match, he has won the match.
[4:05] Speaker 2: It's a pretty good choice.
[4:07] Speaker 1: What was your experience like on the summer camp media event?
[4:10] Speaker 5: I thought it was a lot of fun. It's kind
[4:13] Speaker 5: of like you said.
[4:13] Speaker 6: It's not that often that you get to go out
[4:15] Speaker 6: and just burn somebody else's ammo and shoot and have
[4:17] Speaker 6: a good time.
[4:19] Speaker 5: I like to shoot guns. We shoot a lot of
[4:21] Speaker 5: bolt-action rifles, a lot of precision rifles, long-range.
[4:24] Speaker 6: It's not that often that we get to shoot the
[4:26] Speaker 6: shotguns and handguns and ARs and subs and all that
[4:29] Speaker 6: stuff that you get to shoot. at these events like this.
[4:32] Speaker 6: And these guys, you know, kind of bring it all out.
[4:33] Speaker 6: You get a little bit of everything. You get to
[4:35] Speaker 6: test all their products, everything's suppressed. So you don't have
[4:37] Speaker 6: to worry about, you know, ear pro and things like
[4:39] Speaker 6: that the whole time. Plus you get to shoot, you know,
[4:41] Speaker 6: a full night of full auto stuff and you don't
[4:43] Speaker 6: get to do that very often.
[4:44] Speaker 5: So I had a great time.
[4:45] Speaker 6: I was pretty fortunate that I got invited to come and,
[4:48] Speaker 6: and be able to, you know, do some of the
[4:50] Speaker 6: training and be involved with it.
[4:51] Speaker 4: So just to piggyback off of that a little bit, uh,
[4:55] Speaker 4: the first part of the shooting component of the event
[4:58] Speaker 4: was some long distance shooting. And again, like with some
[5:02] Speaker 4: competition on the line, we wanted to bring some experts out.
[5:06] Speaker 4: So we brought Austin and a couple other dudes out
[5:10] Speaker 4: to help people like get some fundamentals behind some long
[5:13] Speaker 4: distance shooting that, you know, at the end of the day,
[5:16] Speaker 4: these events are fun just to put rounds down range,
[5:19] Speaker 4: but it's more fun when you get hits. So having
[5:22] Speaker 4: some instruction on, you know, how to build a position
[5:26] Speaker 4: behind the gun or, you know, trigger pull or whatever
[5:29] Speaker 4: the technique would be having an expert there to help
[5:33] Speaker 4: guide people to a more successful outcome was important to
[5:36] Speaker 4: us just as much as the product.
[5:38] Speaker 3: Because we are shooters, we want people to get hits.
[5:41] Speaker 4: And, you know, some of those stages that we did
[5:44] Speaker 4: that were the long.
[5:45] Speaker 3: Distance component, they weren't easy.
[5:49] Speaker 4: And having some people to give guidance on that was
[5:52] Speaker 4: something we wanted to provide.
[5:54] Speaker 3: And Austin did a fantastic job.
[5:56] Speaker 4: Of getting people, you know, some of the people that
[5:59] Speaker 4: I saw shoot, they'd never shot that.
[6:01] Speaker 3: Far, 1,000 yards plus.
[6:06] Speaker 4: And it was fun to see guys get first, second
[6:10] Speaker 4: round hits on a distance they've never even could touch
[6:14] Speaker 4: in the past, either by where they live or how
[6:16] Speaker 4: the ranges they go to. So having that educational component
[6:21] Speaker 4: there on top of product education and manufacturing education, I
[6:27] Speaker 4: think provided a nice, well-rounded environment to.
[6:30] Speaker 2: Have a lot of fun.
[6:32] Speaker 1: Well, like you guys did make it a lot of fun,
[6:35] Speaker 1: but one of the, one of the things that they
[6:36] Speaker 1: did was, you know, the first night we were there,
[6:39] Speaker 1: we had a little, a little dinner, uh, get together
[6:42] Speaker 1: and they lined out basically the summer camp rules, uh,
[6:45] Speaker 1: really is what it was.
[6:47] Speaker 2: And Austin got to.
[6:49] Speaker 1: Participate in this, Mike, not so much more on the
[6:52] Speaker 1: other end of it, but they brought out this like
[6:55] Speaker 1: souped up, uh, dirt bike, which was, it was an
[6:59] Speaker 1: electric dirt bike.
[7:00] Speaker 2: Frigging awesome. I mean, beautiful.
[7:03] Speaker 1: And there was points accumulated through summer camp that you
[7:07] Speaker 1: got to get like, so you could go find golden
[7:09] Speaker 1: tickets and you guys drove everybody nuts with that because
[7:12] Speaker 1: I spent 90% of my time walking around. Like I
[7:16] Speaker 1: was walking through a Western Oklahoma field looking for snakes.
[7:20] Speaker 1: Like I was looking under every bush, every rock, like,
[7:24] Speaker 1: around every corner trying to find these little golden tickets
[7:26] Speaker 1: that had points on it, which is a fun way to, like,
[7:30] Speaker 1: get you interactive and really participate. But that first night,
[7:35] Speaker 1: and I'll kind of let Austin talk a little bit
[7:37] Speaker 1: about this, like, you guys turned out the lights, turned
[7:40] Speaker 1: everything off, and then we were out shooting, like, the
[7:43] Speaker 1: Silencer Co. Salvo 12 on some shotguns at glow-in-the-dark targets.
[7:50] Speaker 1: And if you have, if you've never done this, That's
[7:53] Speaker 1: one of the coolest ways to shoot shotguns, I think. Austin,
[7:57] Speaker 1: was your experience kind of the same?
[7:59] Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a great time.
[8:02] Speaker 1: For one, just shooting suppressed shotguns, you don't get to
[8:04] Speaker 1: do that very much, right?
[8:05] Speaker 5: So just taking that.
[8:06] Speaker 6: Out and doing it, and then you had a thrower
[8:08] Speaker 6: on each side that would throw kind of at a
[8:11] Speaker 6: different RPM at a different angle each time with green
[8:14] Speaker 6: lights shining on them.
[8:16] Speaker 2: And it was really cool because whenever you hit one good,
[8:19] Speaker 2: it just disappeared.
[8:20] Speaker 5: It just completely disappeared.
[8:21] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[8:22] Speaker 2: And they were pretty hard to hit.
[8:23] Speaker 5: They were climbing fast.
[8:25] Speaker 2: When you hit.
[8:25] Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
[8:27] Speaker 1: But I saw Austin shoot a shotgun. Like, we talk
[8:30] Speaker 1: about how, you know, both these guys are great, accomplished shooters. But, like,
[8:35] Speaker 1: don't let the guys fool you. Like, they shoot shotguns good.
[8:39] Speaker 1: They shot pistols really well. And usually you don't get
[8:43] Speaker 1: that in a multi, like a singular sport who's so.
[8:46] Speaker 2: Good at what they do. But Austin and Mike really, like,
[8:50] Speaker 2: exploded it.
[8:52] Speaker 1: Um, you know, we're going to, we're going to take
[8:54] Speaker 1: a little break, but before the break, I'm going to
[8:56] Speaker 1: start sharing a little bit of a story and we're
[8:58] Speaker 1: going to start talking about the, the place where silencers
[9:03] Speaker 1: and precision NRL, like have a place and some dangers
[9:09] Speaker 1: of it, what you got to watch out for, um,
[9:11] Speaker 1: best practices. And they'll give you some good advice on this,
[9:15] Speaker 1: but I'll tell you guys, this happened to me this
[9:17] Speaker 1: past year in an NRL match. There was a stage
[9:21] Speaker 1: where you had to run up. You had to run up.
[9:24] Speaker 1: I think it was like 20, 25 yards to your
[9:27] Speaker 1: next shooting position. And Austin, you've been there. Mike, you've
[9:32] Speaker 1: seen these competitions. You've been in them. And your mind's
[9:36] Speaker 1: already progressing to the next shot. Okay, when I place
[9:39] Speaker 1: my gun down, where is that target?
[9:41] Speaker 2: What is next?
[9:43] Speaker 1: Rarely do you have to worry about your equipment because
[9:46] Speaker 1: by this time, your equipment's been vetted.
[9:48] Speaker 2: You've practiced with it. You've prepared with it.
[9:51] Speaker 1: And as I was running up to the event or
[9:54] Speaker 1: to the next stage, like something really bad happened. Um,
[9:59] Speaker 1: and before I get to that, before I get to
[10:01] Speaker 1: that part, let's take a word from our sponsor. If
[10:07] Speaker 1: you're headed out in the timber this season, you need
[10:09] Speaker 1: a rifle that works as hard as you do. The
[10:11] Speaker 1: Smith and Wesson 1854 is a lever action built for
[10:15] Speaker 1: the field chambered in 44 Magnum with a threaded barrel,
[10:18] Speaker 1: tritium front sight, and.
[10:19] Speaker 2: An M-LOK forend ready for your optic or light.
[10:22] Speaker 1: It's fast on follow-up shots, rugged enough for the brush country,
[10:26] Speaker 1: and light enough to carry all day long on the ridge.
[10:29] Speaker 1: Whether you're chasing whitetail in tight cover or backing up
[10:32] Speaker 1: a hog hunt after dark, the 1854 gives you fast,
[10:35] Speaker 1: reliable knockdown power when it counts. Smith & Wesson, the 1854,
[10:40] Speaker 1: built for the hunt. If you've trusted EOTech's holographic sights
[10:44] Speaker 1: on your defensive and tactical builds, Wait until you get
[10:47] Speaker 1: your hands on their Voodoo line of rifle scopes. EOTech
[10:51] Speaker 1: took the same standard of no-compromise performance and poured it
[10:55] Speaker 1: into a precision optic built for the field. The Voodoo
[10:59] Speaker 1: series delivers crystal-clear glass, repeatable turrets, and rugged construction that
[11:04] Speaker 1: can take a mountain hunt and come back asking for more.
[11:07] Speaker 1: From the range to the ridge, Voodoo scopes are engineered
[11:11] Speaker 1: for shooters who demand accuracy and won't settle for anything less.
[11:15] Speaker 1: EOTech Voodoo, glass that performs when the moment arrives. Check
[11:20] Speaker 1: out the full Voodoo lineup at EOTechInc.com. Your favorite hunting

[11:49] Speaker 1: Shooting Sports Life on your smart TV today and start watching.
[11:52] Speaker 1: Shooting Sports Life, where freedom is a lifestyle. You know
[11:56] Speaker 1: that moment when your buddy shoots without a suppressor and
[12:00] Speaker 1: everybody within a mile hears about it?
[12:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, don't be that guy.
[12:04] Speaker 1: The Dead Air Nomad OTB, which stands for over the barrel,
[12:08] Speaker 1: slides right over your muzzle device, So you keep your
[12:12] Speaker 1: zero and skip the hassle of remounting every time you
[12:15] Speaker 1: swap it out. It's quiet, it's tough, and it's built
[12:18] Speaker 1: for hunters and shooters who'd rather hear the wind than
[12:21] Speaker 1: their own ears ringing. Dead Air's been building suppressors that
[12:25] Speaker 1: actually hold up to abuse, and the Nomad OTB is
[12:29] Speaker 1: no different. Less noise, less recoil, more range time, more
[12:33] Speaker 1: hunts without your ears ringing. Dead Air, because I'm sorry,
[12:38] Speaker 1: my bad, or excuse me, Shouldn't be a.
[12:41] Speaker 2: Part of your vocabulary, especially online. All right, welcome back.
[12:47] Speaker 1: All right, when I left off, I was on a
[12:50] Speaker 1: shooting stage at an NRL match this year. And shooting suppressed,
[12:57] Speaker 1: the side TI, phenomenal canned. But as I'm running across,
[13:02] Speaker 1: there's a creek. And there's pallets laid across this creek,
[13:07] Speaker 1: so when you run over, I'm running over and something
[13:10] Speaker 1: completely unexpected happened. It's a nightmare situation for any person
[13:15] Speaker 1: on a stage. But all of a sudden I hear
[13:19] Speaker 1: a thud and I'm like, I just dropped something.
[13:23] Speaker 2: And Austin, you'll, you'll appreciate this.
[13:24] Speaker 1: I look down and see my bolt, my whole bolt
[13:29] Speaker 1: sitting on that pallet.
[13:30] Speaker 2: And I'm like, you've got to be kidding. How'd my
[13:32] Speaker 2: bolt fall out?
[13:34] Speaker 1: So I grabbed my bolt and it's been, uh, It's,
[13:38] Speaker 1: it's been basically like, uh, went into basically battery.
[13:43] Speaker 2: So I had to like release it.
[13:45] Speaker 1: So I'm up there yanking on my shoestring, trying to
[13:48] Speaker 1: release this bolt to get back into shooting the match.
[13:51] Speaker 2: And I ended up scoring okay on.
[13:53] Speaker 1: It, but those are like nightmare situations in PRS and
[13:56] Speaker 1: NRL matches that, that really happened quite often. And I, man, Austin, you've,
[14:02] Speaker 1: you've been to so many of these competitions.
[14:04] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[14:04] Speaker 5: So I've, I've seen it before.
[14:05] Speaker 6: I've seen just about everything, you know, like you were
[14:07] Speaker 6: talking about, you, you know, I've seen people hang a,
[14:10] Speaker 6: like a coat sleeve or something on your bolt and
[14:12] Speaker 6: roll your bolt and.
[14:13] Speaker 5: Decock it and you have to pull it out and
[14:15] Speaker 5: try to do it.
[14:16] Speaker 6: Or, you know, somebody's bolt stop gets stuck open or,
[14:19] Speaker 6: or breaks and they come out and, you know, they're
[14:21] Speaker 6: running the bolt and then all of a sudden they're
[14:22] Speaker 6: holding the bolt in their hand.
[14:23] Speaker 5: Looking at like, what do I do now?
[14:24] Speaker 6: You know, uh, trigger failure, you know, you see, you
[14:27] Speaker 6: see all of it. You go enough, you go through
[14:30] Speaker 6: enough of equipment where, you see just about everything fail
[14:34] Speaker 6: at some point you know we shot you know tens
[14:38] Speaker 6: of thousands of rounds and in match settings and in
[14:40] Speaker 6: practice and everything else and so I would say there's
[14:43] Speaker 6: not very many things.
[14:44] Speaker 1: That I haven't seen at this point yeah and that's
[14:47] Speaker 1: it's unfortunate but yeah I mean I will say this
[14:50] Speaker 1: I've never seen a suppressor go down range yet that
[14:54] Speaker 1: I haven't seen.
[14:57] Speaker 5: I have seen that. I've seen that multiple times.
[15:00] Speaker 6: Not any one particular brand, but I've seen several brands
[15:04] Speaker 6: where you shoot and you hear something that's not supposed
[15:07] Speaker 6: to sound like a suppressor and it'll launch it downrange.
[15:11] Speaker 1: Mike, you've got to see this all the time as
[15:15] Speaker 1: far as through the testing process.
[15:17] Speaker 2: And even through matches.
[15:20] Speaker 1: What would you say is the most, maybe it's a
[15:23] Speaker 1: misconception about suppressors on on the PRS and NRL, like
[15:27] Speaker 1: the long range guns and suppressors. What, what do you
[15:30] Speaker 1: think the biggest misconception is?
[15:35] Speaker 4: Um, I would say, and I'll have Austin kind of
[15:38] Speaker 4: keep me a little more honest. My, my area expertise
[15:42] Speaker 4: is not long range shooting. Um, I shoot mostly short
[15:47] Speaker 4: guns and hunt with short guns, but I would say, uh, accuracy, uh,
[15:54] Speaker 4: deviation when you put a can on is probably one
[15:58] Speaker 4: of the biggest misconceptions. Um, and really like, I.
[16:04] Speaker 3: Think we're, we're probably.
[16:06] Speaker 4: In a stage it's been interesting, you know, over the
[16:08] Speaker 4: last decade of seeing suppressor adoption just from the industry,
[16:15] Speaker 4: not only from just OEMs, you know, making guns that
[16:18] Speaker 4: take suppressors, but now like the consumer starting to understand
[16:22] Speaker 4: a lot of these misconceptions and, and dismissing them for misconceptions.
[16:27] Speaker 3: Um, I don't know.
[16:29] Speaker 4: I Austin might have some other insight, but my, to
[16:32] Speaker 4: my knowledge, I would say accuracy deviation is probably one
[16:37] Speaker 4: of the biggest, but.
[16:39] Speaker 1: I mean, but I think, but I think that can
[16:41] Speaker 1: go back to the short gun conversation in itself. When
[16:44] Speaker 1: you talk about accuracy and, and, and it deviating so much,
[16:48] Speaker 1: I think you can go back and, and I mean,
[16:50] Speaker 1: you can definitely speak on that, uh, being more into the,
[16:54] Speaker 1: the short guns and stuff.
[16:55] Speaker 2: I mean, it's, it's, I mean, I, to me, it's
[16:58] Speaker 2: the same.
[17:00] Speaker 3: It is the same.
[17:01] Speaker 4: And, and I, I have put down some of the
[17:05] Speaker 4: best groups I've ever shot with a 16 inch bolt
[17:09] Speaker 4: gun with a can on it. And, and there's a
[17:12] Speaker 4: lot more factors that go into accuracy than, than the
[17:16] Speaker 4: can itself, uh, or the length of the barrel, but certainly, uh,
[17:22] Speaker 4: you know, I've had a lot of success personally. And
[17:24] Speaker 4: then obviously at Siren School, we do a ton of
[17:27] Speaker 4: testing on accuracy, point of impact shift, on and off
[17:31] Speaker 4: the gun, et cetera, and really try to build products
[17:35] Speaker 4: that minimize to the point where you're not seeing noticeably
[17:40] Speaker 4: any difference in your shop.
[17:42] Speaker 3: Right.
[17:43] Speaker 2: Austin, what do you think?
[17:46] Speaker 6: Yeah, I think we've seen kind of a big transition
[17:49] Speaker 6: to suppressors. And I would say probably in our world,
[17:53] Speaker 6: As far as long-range shooting, and guys are kind of
[17:56] Speaker 6: in the know, there really never was the notion that
[18:02] Speaker 6: the suppressor caused accuracy issues, because it really never has.
[18:07] Speaker 6: If anything, I don't think it really affects accuracy one
[18:11] Speaker 6: way or the other, other than a heavier can on
[18:14] Speaker 6: the end of a barrel can kind of act as
[18:16] Speaker 6: a stabilizer, and it seems like it is.
[18:18] Speaker 5: A little bit more forgiving whenever you get the weight
[18:20] Speaker 5: out on the end.
[18:22] Speaker 6: When I first started shooting PRS back in 2016, 2017,
[18:25] Speaker 6: there was a lot of people running suppressed.
[18:28] Speaker 5: Just because it was enjoyable.
[18:32] Speaker 6: The suppressors, I think, have advanced a lot since then.
[18:35] Speaker 6: The reason a lot of people got away from suppressors
[18:37] Speaker 6: was the biggest thing about our sport and the name
[18:42] Speaker 6: of the game is being able to spot your own shots.
[18:44] Speaker 5: And being able to spot your own shots very accurately.
[18:46] Speaker 6: Well, when you go to a muzzle break, that recoil
[18:48] Speaker 6: is very sharp and short and you have time, you
[18:50] Speaker 6: can recover and you can see. Well, then that also
[18:53] Speaker 6: comes with long-term implications of, you know, it's hard on
[18:58] Speaker 6: your soft tissues.
[18:59] Speaker 5: You get a lot of blasts. You're shooting 200 rounds
[19:01] Speaker 5: in a weekend. You know, guys are like, man, I
[19:02] Speaker 5: don't know why I have a headache after two full
[19:04] Speaker 5: days of shooting. Well, you shot 200 rounds with a
[19:06] Speaker 5: muzzle break, right?
[19:07] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[19:08] Speaker 6: So... I think we're starting to see this big transition
[19:12] Speaker 6: back to suppressors, and part of the reason we're starting
[19:14] Speaker 6: to see big transitions back to suppressors is because you
[19:16] Speaker 6: kind of have these hybrid designs that you come out with,
[19:18] Speaker 6: like the SilencerCo STM. You can run it in a
[19:22] Speaker 6: short configuration, and with the Bravo mounting system on the front,
[19:26] Speaker 6: you have a lot of options for muzzle brakes that
[19:29] Speaker 6: go on the end of a suppressor. So then it
[19:31] Speaker 6: takes the blast away, it takes the concussion away, but
[19:34] Speaker 6: then the air that is.
[19:35] Speaker 5: Still moving through the suppressor is used efficiently to reduce
[19:37] Speaker 5: some of the recoil.
[19:39] Speaker 6: So now instead of feeling like you have to give
[19:42] Speaker 6: up everything that you would gain on a muzzle brake
[19:43] Speaker 6: to go to a suppressor, you can go to a
[19:45] Speaker 6: suppressor and still get most of the benefit of a
[19:48] Speaker 6: muzzle brake on the end of it. um and then
[19:50] Speaker 6: now you don't have the blast you don't have the
[19:52] Speaker 6: headache after two days but you still have a very
[19:54] Speaker 6: manageable recoil rifle right it is it can stay flat
[19:58] Speaker 6: and you can still spot your shots um so yeah
[20:01] Speaker 6: i over the last what year and a half we've
[20:03] Speaker 6: seen a big swing going back to suppressors like they
[20:06] Speaker 6: kind of were originally and i do i think that's
[20:08] Speaker 6: here to.
[20:08] Speaker 4: Stay for a while Yeah, we came out with the
[20:11] Speaker 4: Bravo directional anchor brake as part of Austin and a
[20:16] Speaker 4: handful of other PRS shooters' feedback to provide that extra
[20:22] Speaker 4: muzzle brake at the end of a silencer. And what
[20:25] Speaker 4: I found, I think others have found, is it changes
[20:28] Speaker 4: the recoil impulse in such a favorable way that you
[20:34] Speaker 4: can call your shots. You can stay on the gun
[20:37] Speaker 4: and see your targets and The first time I shot it,
[20:40] Speaker 4: we went out prairie dog hunting in West Wyoming, which
[20:46] Speaker 4: is approaching Oklahoma wind speeds consistently. But to be able
[20:53] Speaker 4: to stay on that gun and see your misses and
[20:55] Speaker 4: then make your adjustments and measure and actually make some
[20:59] Speaker 4: big hits at distance, I've never experienced anything like that.
[21:03] Speaker 3: And that extra two-port break that sits.
[21:06] Speaker 4: On the end of a STM is absolutely fantastic, which
[21:10] Speaker 4: is what, uh, you know, you guys shot the first
[21:13] Speaker 4: day on, on the long distance stuff.
[21:16] Speaker 1: Well, I think that's the, I think seeing those impacts
[21:18] Speaker 1: on the shots, because so much in the, so much
[21:21] Speaker 1: in the NRL PRS is, is, are those followup shots.
[21:24] Speaker 1: And if you don't know where that shot went, I mean, you're,
[21:28] Speaker 1: you're just guessing at that point.
[21:30] Speaker 2: Uh, you're, you're looking at what you think you feel like.
[21:33] Speaker 1: I feel like that shot was this side, or I
[21:36] Speaker 1: feel like that shot was high or low. but being
[21:39] Speaker 1: able to spot your impacts is, is paramount when it
[21:42] Speaker 1: comes to that followup shot. And I think that's where
[21:44] Speaker 1: a suppressor with like the Bravo system and the Bravo
[21:47] Speaker 1: brakes really helps a shooter. And like that switch that I,
[21:53] Speaker 1: did it start with the side TI, uh, as far
[21:57] Speaker 1: as like understanding what you guys are capable of with
[22:00] Speaker 1: those brakes?
[22:02] Speaker 4: You know, really it started back, uh, with the Omega 300, uh,
[22:08] Speaker 4: That's where the anchor break started. It kind of looks
[22:10] Speaker 4: like a spaceship ray gun, three port, you know, radial break.
[22:15] Speaker 2: Right.
[22:17] Speaker 4: And really that can, at the time, the engineering team
[22:21] Speaker 4: and the co-founder, Jonathan Schultz, who invented that silencer and
[22:25] Speaker 4: many of the other, you know, kind of greatest.
[22:27] Speaker 3: Hits, he was shooting PRS.
[22:30] Speaker 4: He wanted, you know, a can that was, you know,
[22:33] Speaker 4: durable yet, you know, decent on weight, but then also
[22:37] Speaker 4: had some, uh, recoil mitigation.
[22:40] Speaker 3: And that's where it sort of started.
[22:43] Speaker 4: And then through Scythe TI, they really start honing in
[22:46] Speaker 4: that single port break. Uh, and then again, PRS came
[22:50] Speaker 4: in to help us educate us on, you know, some,
[22:53] Speaker 4: some benefits of a larger break. And we developed that, that, uh,
[22:58] Speaker 4: Brecht Bravo directional anchor break that exists now that it's
[23:02] Speaker 4: totally fantastic. But yeah, It's kind of fun to trace
[23:05] Speaker 4: a lot of the rifle advancements in silencers for Silenscope
[23:10] Speaker 4: came through PRS.
[23:13] Speaker 3: Current generation.
[23:14] Speaker 4: And also like, like I mentioned, you know, over a
[23:17] Speaker 4: decade ago, they were shooting PRS and we're discovering, you know,
[23:21] Speaker 4: holes in silencer manufacturing and engineering innovation that, you know,
[23:27] Speaker 4: lent itself not only to well to PRS, but, The
[23:32] Speaker 4: Omega 300 has gone on to be the best-selling silencer
[23:34] Speaker 4: that's ever been made. And that started as a pet
[23:37] Speaker 4: project to do PRS shooting. He'd shot that can for
[23:41] Speaker 4: over a year and never showed anybody. It was just
[23:44] Speaker 4: for him. And the market was very tactical at the time.
[23:49] Speaker 4: Cans were extremely heavy. And this provided a different opportunity,
[23:53] Speaker 4: and it took hold and took off. And we're seeing
[23:57] Speaker 4: that with the Scythe family now.
[24:00] Speaker 3: Both in the tie and the STM.
[24:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, I absolutely love them.
[24:04] Speaker 1: Hey, when we come back, let's talk tips, tricks to
[24:06] Speaker 1: help your shooting.
[24:07] Speaker 2: Performance on the range and in the field.
[24:12] Speaker 1: Looking to trim a few LBs out of your pack

[24:44] Speaker 1: you're talking about weight. You're talking about, well, how much
[24:48] Speaker 1: really is it going to weigh?
[24:50] Speaker 2: Trust me.
[24:52] Speaker 1: You're going to be able to carry this thing all day.
[24:54] Speaker 1: It's under that seven pound range. So I promise you
[24:58] Speaker 1: it's accurate too. So trust Savage 110 Carbon Predator for

[25:23] Speaker 2: Hey, here's a pro tip for you.
[25:24] Speaker 1: Before your hunt, you need to go out, you need

[25:52] Speaker 1: Or something like that. Pretty dang close, I would say.
[25:56] Speaker 2: Yeah, the guy's been there, done that. Pistol? Check. Rifle? Check. Yeah,
[26:01] Speaker 2: we got it all. Force on force? We do that
[26:04] Speaker 2: every now and then, too. Bring your bruises. Instructor development.
[26:09] Speaker 1: Welcome to the Thunderdome of learning.
[26:12] Speaker 2: It's more than training.
[26:13] Speaker 1: It's range ready because real life doesn't come with a
[26:15] Speaker 1: respawn button. All right, we're back. Tips and tricks because
[26:20] Speaker 1: you want to learn from the pros. Mike, let's start
[26:23] Speaker 1: over with you. I know Austin's got a lot of
[26:25] Speaker 1: like positional shooting tips that we can give us, but
[26:28] Speaker 1: let's talk about suppressors in general on guns itself, whether
[26:33] Speaker 1: it's short.
[26:34] Speaker 2: Guns, long guns. Let's talk selection.
[26:39] Speaker 1: And let's talk maintenance on those, because I think that's
[26:41] Speaker 1: two big things.
[26:42] Speaker 2: That like people are kind of unsure of.
[26:45] Speaker 1: You know, it's like I always likened it to like
[26:48] Speaker 1: a new fisherman walking into a Bass Pro Shops and going,
[26:51] Speaker 1: all right, I want you to pick out a bait
[26:53] Speaker 1: to use in the spring. It's like, OK, what are
[26:57] Speaker 1: we fishing for? What's the goal of it? And they
[26:59] Speaker 1: they're just lost. So what tips you got for us?
[27:05] Speaker 4: So I think starting from like the very, to use
[27:09] Speaker 4: your analogy, the guy that walks into Bass Pro and goes, hey,
[27:12] Speaker 4: spring's coming around. I want to go fishing. I want
[27:15] Speaker 4: to catch some fish. Well, just like, you know, in
[27:18] Speaker 4: the fishing industry, in the silencer world, there's a number
[27:21] Speaker 4: of cans that you can pick one can that does
[27:24] Speaker 4: a bunch of things pretty good, if not really well.
[27:28] Speaker 4: And we have those products you can shoot. centerfire pistol
[27:34] Speaker 4: through almost any centerfire rifle round, specifically like the 36M
[27:40] Speaker 4: and 46M offerings. We sell a host of accessories that
[27:45] Speaker 4: can mount to hundreds of different combinations of guns and
[27:50] Speaker 4: different ammo. You'll find as you get a little bit
[27:55] Speaker 4: more into it, just like a fisherman would, Then the
[27:58] Speaker 4: guy goes, well, I'm going to be fishing this stream.
[28:00] Speaker 4: That changes your setup from fishing a lake or fishing
[28:04] Speaker 4: in the ocean.
[28:05] Speaker 3: And that's kind of how silencer ownership goes.
[28:09] Speaker 4: A lot of people jump into the multi-cow variable suppressors,
[28:15] Speaker 4: which is a great first start.
[28:17] Speaker 3: But then you start getting specific.
[28:19] Speaker 4: And you have to really assess kind of what your
[28:22] Speaker 4: goal is, what the gun is that you're going to
[28:24] Speaker 4: be shooting on, and the things that you're trying to
[28:27] Speaker 4: get out of it. Do I want a supremely quiet can?
[28:32] Speaker 4: I'm going to be shooting subsonic rounds. That's a very
[28:37] Speaker 4: specific area and we have cans that cover that. Are
[28:40] Speaker 4: you more interested in just knocking down some of the
[28:43] Speaker 4: blast where hearing isn't, the volume isn't as attentive? For example,
[28:51] Speaker 4: like our low back pressure bellows can. Low back pressure
[28:54] Speaker 4: cans are usually a little bit louder than a sealed can.
[28:59] Speaker 4: We pay attention to that. We try to make the
[29:01] Speaker 4: quietest low back pressure can there is, which I think
[29:05] Speaker 4: we've accomplished.
[29:06] Speaker 3: But that can has a specific purpose.
[29:08] Speaker 4: It's more about keeping gas moving out the front of
[29:12] Speaker 4: the gun, keeping the cyclic rate of your AR in check.
[29:19] Speaker 3: So there's different goals.
[29:21] Speaker 4: And really, not to make it sound too complicated, but
[29:25] Speaker 4: at the end of the day, you have to assess
[29:26] Speaker 4: what's the utility of it. Am I going out shooting
[29:29] Speaker 4: tires in the desert with a friend? There's a can
[29:32] Speaker 4: for that. Am I shooting PRS or am I hunting
[29:36] Speaker 4: is lightweight an option uh there's there's cans built for
[29:40] Speaker 4: that so we really try to kind of go into
[29:43] Speaker 4: a full spectrum of first-time use to hyper specific we
[29:49] Speaker 4: call them scalpels but like a very specific can for
[29:52] Speaker 4: a specific application yeah um to answer your question about
[29:56] Speaker 4: maintenance you know really uh by our estimation, the only
[30:02] Speaker 4: cans that really need, uh, regular maintenance are 22, like long, uh,
[30:07] Speaker 4: long rifle, um, super dirty round. You need to be
[30:11] Speaker 4: able to clean those baffles out, uh, with our lifetime
[30:15] Speaker 4: warranty and the warranty that we offer. If you feel
[30:18] Speaker 4: like your centerfire rifle can is getting a little heavy or,
[30:23] Speaker 4: or needs, you know, maybe has lost a DB or two,
[30:26] Speaker 4: send it in. We'll take care of it for you. Uh,
[30:29] Speaker 4: and that is either, uh, We'll clean it or we'll
[30:31] Speaker 4: just get you a new baffle stack that can get
[30:36] Speaker 4: it back to its tip-top shape. So, yeah, we don't
[30:39] Speaker 4: put a lot of emphasis on cleaning centerfire rifle cans. Truthfully,
[30:44] Speaker 4: the pressure of those cartridges are typically high enough. A
[30:48] Speaker 4: lot of that carbon and gunk just goes out in
[30:50] Speaker 4: the front anyway. But if there's a problem, we call
[30:54] Speaker 4: our customer service.
[30:55] Speaker 3: We make it whole.
[30:56] Speaker 2: Nice. It makes it easy for sure.
[30:58] Speaker 1: Uh, Austin, now you're heading to, you're, you're heading out
[31:01] Speaker 1: here pretty soon for an elk hunt. Um, what, what
[31:05] Speaker 1: can are you, are you rolling with and what tips
[31:08] Speaker 1: are you going to, uh, utilize that you've learned over
[31:11] Speaker 1: the years, uh, to get you an elk?
[31:15] Speaker 5: Well, this elk hunt is going to be archery.
[31:17] Speaker 2: Oh, so you're going really quiet.
[31:20] Speaker 5: Yeah, we're going with the struggle stick.
[31:21] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[31:22] Speaker 3: Yeah, we leave in the morning.
[31:23] Speaker 6: We'll go hunt for a few days, and then when
[31:26] Speaker 6: I get back, actually, I'm home for two days, and
[31:29] Speaker 6: then we go to Texas for the World Championships.
[31:32] Speaker 5: Now, for hunting, I like the Scythe TI.
[31:35] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[31:36] Speaker 6: That's the one I took last year to Montana elk hunting.
[31:39] Speaker 6: That's the can that I took to New Zealand this
[31:41] Speaker 6: last year, and we shot a whole slew of stuff
[31:45] Speaker 6: with the Scythe TI. It's fairly short. It's really light,
[31:49] Speaker 6: and it's quiet. it's got a little bit of everything
[31:51] Speaker 6: that you want out of a good hunting can. Um,
[31:54] Speaker 6: and then for the world championship, I'll be shooting the site, the.
[31:58] Speaker 2: STM at the STM.
[32:00] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[32:00] Speaker 6: So that it would be in a short configuration, the STM, uh,
[32:03] Speaker 6: their stainless version with a, with the muzzle brake on
[32:06] Speaker 6: the end of it, uh, to.
[32:08] Speaker 5: Shoot the world championship next week.
[32:09] Speaker 1: So just because I think I know that, but I
[32:13] Speaker 1: want to hear it from a real two real professionals. Like,
[32:17] Speaker 1: so when you go hunting, um, And I know the
[32:20] Speaker 1: big emphasis, like a lot of these competition guys are
[32:23] Speaker 1: running these breaks. Where do you reside on hunting game
[32:31] Speaker 1: with like a break and a can? Like the anchor break.
[32:38] Speaker 1: Like where do you land on that?
[32:40] Speaker 6: I normally don't run the break on the end of
[32:42] Speaker 6: it when I'm hunting just because I want it to
[32:46] Speaker 6: be quieter.
[32:47] Speaker 5: I'm usually shooting a little larger cartridge.
[32:50] Speaker 6: And it's not even that the brakes on the end
[32:54] Speaker 6: of the suppressor make it.
[32:55] Speaker 5: Quote-unquote, louder.
[32:57] Speaker 6: It's just louder to the shooter because you're directing some
[32:59] Speaker 6: of that back to you. So the overall sound, as
[33:02] Speaker 6: far as what the animal hears, is going to be
[33:04] Speaker 6: pretty much the same, which is the supersonic crack of
[33:06] Speaker 6: the bullet when it gets to them anyway. So I
[33:09] Speaker 6: typically don't hunt with the brakes. I like the shortest length.
[33:12] Speaker 6: I like the quietest configuration as far as to my ears.
[33:15] Speaker 6: So I'll usually run the blank end cap on the STM.
[33:18] Speaker 6: I think actually when I did go to New Zealand,
[33:21] Speaker 6: I knew we were going to be shooting quite a bit.
[33:22] Speaker 6: So I ran the small narrow break that comes.
[33:26] Speaker 5: With the, with the side TI.
[33:28] Speaker 3: Okay.
[33:29] Speaker 5: When I went there and.
[33:30] Speaker 6: That, and that does enough, it reduces some recoil, but
[33:32] Speaker 6: it's keeps, stays pretty quiet and it's short.
[33:35] Speaker 5: It doesn't add a lot of overall length to it.
[33:36] Speaker 6: So that was the option I took whenever I went
[33:38] Speaker 6: to New Zealand and, and last year when I.
[33:42] Speaker 5: Went to Montana.
[33:43] Speaker 2: Okay.
[33:43] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[33:44] Speaker 3: I'm, I'm the same page. I either run.
[33:49] Speaker 4: The scythe tie or the STM, depending on the gun
[33:52] Speaker 4: I'm shooting, and then either a flat front cap or
[33:55] Speaker 4: the single port anchor break that comes with it. I
[33:59] Speaker 4: shot a really nice fallow deer with sub blackout about
[34:02] Speaker 4: a month ago with an AR, and I was running
[34:06] Speaker 4: an STM in the short with a single port anchor break.
[34:10] Speaker 3: Just to give a little extra.
[34:12] Speaker 4: you know, um, recoil mitigation, which sub blackout doesn't have
[34:17] Speaker 4: a ton to start with, but, um, yeah, it just
[34:20] Speaker 4: depends on the scenario, but it's either flat front cap
[34:23] Speaker 4: for total sound quality or that single port.
[34:26] Speaker 3: If I need just a little extra.
[34:28] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[34:29] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[34:29] Speaker 2: That's that's yeah. I agree with all those points. I mean, it's,
[34:32] Speaker 2: it's good.
[34:34] Speaker 4: I figured with sub blackout, uh, follow-up shots might be
[34:38] Speaker 4: a thing. So having a little, uh, recoil mitigation, uh, actually.
[34:42] Speaker 3: Turn out to be beneficial.
[34:44] Speaker 1: Yeah, it will definitely help you on those follow-up shots
[34:47] Speaker 1: for sure. Austin, kind of one last thing. We're almost
[34:50] Speaker 1: out of time here, but what would be your top three,
[34:55] Speaker 1: let's say, just shooting tips that you would give a
[34:59] Speaker 1: newcomer to this sport?
[35:01] Speaker 2: What are your three best ones you got?
[35:04] Speaker 6: So probably the best one is just get with somebody
[35:07] Speaker 6: that knows what they're doing.
[35:08] Speaker 5: Go take a training class.
[35:10] Speaker 6: Talk to somebody that's going because they're going to help
[35:12] Speaker 6: you tremendously.
[35:14] Speaker 5: Most everybody in this sport, in this industry, is willing
[35:17] Speaker 5: to help you. Reach out to them.
[35:20] Speaker 6: Go to a match first because, number one, you're going
[35:22] Speaker 6: to get to see what gear is the most prevalent,
[35:25] Speaker 6: what people are using.
[35:26] Speaker 5: And for the most part, the.
[35:27] Speaker 6: Guys running the competitions have vetted out what the best
[35:30] Speaker 6: gear is going to be.
[35:32] Speaker 5: We shoot lots of rounds.
[35:33] Speaker 6: Everything fails. We're going to have vetted out. the best
[35:36] Speaker 6: thing and the best setups. And it's not all going
[35:37] Speaker 6: to be the same. There's going to be a lot
[35:39] Speaker 6: of personal preference too. And there's a lot of good
[35:40] Speaker 6: gear out there. Um, but you want to talk to somebody,
[35:43] Speaker 6: you want to be able to see that go to
[35:44] Speaker 6: a match. Most of the time, you know, if you
[35:46] Speaker 6: just ask somebody when the match was over or something
[35:48] Speaker 6: like that, if you can see their setup, they'll, they're
[35:50] Speaker 6: happy to show you the setup. You know, they're, they're
[35:52] Speaker 6: like a car guy and we're getting guys in the
[35:53] Speaker 6: same way. They're looking for a chance to show off
[35:56] Speaker 6: what they got. Um, and then, uh, once you do
[36:00] Speaker 6: that and you start getting in the learning phase of it, uh, yeah,
[36:03] Speaker 6: go take a class, get some training, One of our
[36:05] Speaker 6: favorite things to say is you don't know what you
[36:07] Speaker 6: don't know, and it took us a lot of years
[36:09] Speaker 6: to figure out what we don't know. So there's a
[36:12] Speaker 6: lot of good resources for training.
[36:15] Speaker 5: There's online training.
[36:17] Speaker 2: You do some training too, right?
[36:19] Speaker 5: We do. So we're part of a group.
[36:21] Speaker 6: I'm part of a group called JTAC, and we do
[36:25] Speaker 6: precision rifle training. Each one of us in JTAC also
[36:29] Speaker 6: does training individually. Another guy, Clay Blackheader with Clay's Custom Cartridges,
[36:36] Speaker 6: was at this training event with us too. He helped, uh,
[36:38] Speaker 6: he helped do a lot of the training and between
[36:41] Speaker 6: him and I and a couple other guys, we, we
[36:43] Speaker 6: do individual basis or a clash, you know, big group
[36:46] Speaker 6: classroom setting training too.
[36:48] Speaker 1: So, man, I will, I will say this, uh, before
[36:52] Speaker 1: we head out, um, if you aren't running a can,
[36:54] Speaker 1: you better run a can, uh, be nice to those
[36:56] Speaker 1: around you and to yourself. Because the first voices to
[37:00] Speaker 1: go are the high voices, which is typically like your
[37:04] Speaker 1: grandchildren and stuff like that. So those are the first
[37:06] Speaker 1: voices to go. And two, I can't agree enough with
[37:10] Speaker 1: Austin is, man, get training. Go to someone who's knowledgeable.
[37:14] Speaker 1: Watch these guys. There's videos of these guys shooting and teaching.
[37:19] Speaker 1: And it's invaluable to go alongside them. And you could
[37:24] Speaker 1: even get squatted up with them during a match. And that's...
[37:28] Speaker 1: I'm telling you, there's nothing better than watching good shooters,
[37:31] Speaker 1: and you both are it, man. I appreciate you guys
[37:34] Speaker 1: being on.
[37:36] Speaker 3: Thanks for having me.
[37:38] Speaker 5: Yeah, thanks for having us.
[37:39] Speaker 2: All right, guys. You understand the drill. You know the drill.
[37:43] Speaker 1: Keep those muzzles and suppressors pointing in a safe direction,
[37:46] Speaker 1: and always be on the hunt.
