[0:00] Speaker 1: I didn't miss once, I missed twice on a deer
[0:03] Speaker 1: of a lifetime that takes a long time to draw for.
[0:07] Speaker 1: I'm KJ, you found the right place. We go all
[0:13] Speaker 1: over this little blue orb, sharing stories and tactics about
[0:16] Speaker 1: chasing wild game. Now, let's get on the hunt. Welcome
[0:24] Speaker 1: in all you Gun Talk Hunters, I'm your host KJ
[0:26] Speaker 1: and this episode is brought to you by Savage Arms, EOTech,
[0:29] Speaker 1: Range Ready, Fiocchi and Shooting Sports Live. Thank you guys
[0:33] Speaker 1: for your sponsorship. It means the world. Today is a
[0:37] Speaker 1: great day because you know what? In all the things
[0:40] Speaker 1: that I drew out here, which is absolutely just one thing,
[0:44] Speaker 1: I'm super pleased to announce that I got drawn out
[0:46] Speaker 1: for an Iowa archery tag. And joining me on this
[0:49] Speaker 1: hunt is going to be Thomas Allen and Jeremy King.
[0:52] Speaker 1: Jeremy King out of Iowa. He is like the premier
[0:56] Speaker 1: game warden in Iowa in my eyes and I think
[0:59] Speaker 1: a lot of other people's eyes. And then Thomas Allen,
[1:01] Speaker 1: super land agent out there in Minnesota. All right, guys,
[1:07] Speaker 1: let's jump into this. Let's get an idea of who
[1:10] Speaker 1: our guests are because it's been a while since we've
[1:12] Speaker 1: had them on. Jeremy, give us an idea of who
[1:15] Speaker 1: you are and what you're up to nowadays.
[1:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm based out of Iowa.
[1:20] Speaker 3: Like you said, I'm in southwest, west central-ish Iowa. And
[1:24] Speaker 3: I've been a conservation officer game warden for, golly, since 2004.
[1:30] Speaker 3: thinking about that a ways back. So a little over
[1:32] Speaker 3: 22 years going on. Besides that, I'm a avid hunter, fisherman,
[1:38] Speaker 3: business owner, and also a land sale agent as well.
[1:40] Speaker 3: So kind of dabbling everything in the outdoors and love
[1:44] Speaker 3: being a part.
[1:45] Speaker 2: Of all that stuff.
[1:46] Speaker 1: What's a land sale agent?
[1:49] Speaker 3: I help folks find recreational land that hopefully they can
[1:53] Speaker 3: use to have some memories that they would not have
[1:57] Speaker 3: made otherwise.
[1:58] Speaker 4: Nice.
[1:58] Speaker 2: All right.
[1:59] Speaker 1: Thomas Allen, what are you doing nowadays? You used to
[2:02] Speaker 1: be in the fishing world. You've been in the hunting world. Now,
[2:07] Speaker 1: where are you at?
[2:09] Speaker 4: Well, yeah, you're right. ICAST is this week, Kevin. Do
[2:12] Speaker 4: you have PTSD by not being there this year or
[2:14] Speaker 4: are you happy to miss it again?
[2:17] Speaker 1: I'm happy to miss it again. Like ICAST was one
[2:19] Speaker 1: of those shows that, you know, as much as I
[2:22] Speaker 1: hated it during the moment when I was in it
[2:24] Speaker 1: because it's, you know, usually in Orlando, it's in this,
[2:27] Speaker 1: you know, July odd time frame. Uh, but, and it's hot,
[2:32] Speaker 1: but you rarely see outside. I miss, I kind of,
[2:34] Speaker 1: I kind of miss the Orange County Convention Center.
[2:38] Speaker 4: I don't, uh, first time in 20 years, uh, 21
[2:41] Speaker 4: years of not going, but I do kind of miss
[2:43] Speaker 4: seeing the people, but yeah, it took a 20 year
[2:46] Speaker 4: career in the outdoor industry and stepped into full-time real estate,
[2:49] Speaker 4: just like Jeremy. Um, I'm doing land sales. So I
[2:53] Speaker 4: focus on selling recreational properties, farms, undeveloped lakeshore properties, things
[2:58] Speaker 4: like that. And I do the whole state of Minnesota.
[3:01] Speaker 4: And as of about a week ago, full time in
[3:05] Speaker 4: North Dakota as well. So. Oh, really? Branching out. Yeah.
[3:09] Speaker 1: Well, good. I mean, there's a lot of land out
[3:12] Speaker 1: there in North Dakota that I'm sure is probably going
[3:14] Speaker 1: to be on the market.
[3:17] Speaker 4: Yeah, hopefully. But, you know, the thing that ties us
[3:19] Speaker 4: all together, you look at what You know, Jeremy does
[3:21] Speaker 4: as a professional full-time game warden, works on the real
[3:24] Speaker 4: estate side, selling land. You're in the gun business. I
[3:27] Speaker 4: was in the outdoor business. The thing that kind of
[3:29] Speaker 4: ties us all together is we love to fish and hunt. And,
[3:33] Speaker 4: you know, that passion really burns strong. You find a
[3:36] Speaker 4: way to make it your business.
[3:38] Speaker 1: You got to find some way to do it.
[3:41] Speaker 4: All right.
[3:41] Speaker 1: So let's get into the meat of it. We're here because, man,
[3:46] Speaker 1: we're going to be preseason scouting. uh, for Iowa archery tags.
[3:50] Speaker 1: This is an archery hunt. Last time Thomas and I
[3:53] Speaker 1: went out there, it was late season muzzleloader with, with,
[3:59] Speaker 1: with shots fired. We'll just say that.
[4:02] Speaker 4: No excuse come home and bear empty handed, but.
[4:04] Speaker 1: We did ridiculous.
[4:07] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[4:07] Speaker 2: I think you had some opportunities, right?
[4:10] Speaker 4: Let's talk about my blind. I remember that during that hunt,
[4:14] Speaker 4: Jeremy and Kevin and I, we all went out to
[4:16] Speaker 4: gather a bunch of materials because the particular deer I
[4:19] Speaker 4: was hunting in field, I was hunting and there was
[4:21] Speaker 4: really no good way to get in there because of
[4:23] Speaker 4: the wind. So we bought, I think I spent $ 160
[4:26] Speaker 4: on fencing materials at Menards. And what did we get?
[4:29] Speaker 4: Some sawgrass out of the ditch somewhere in your public area.
[4:33] Speaker 4: And we made this awesome blind and it worked the
[4:35] Speaker 4: first night and I blew it. But I don't get
[4:39] Speaker 4: the respect I deserve after building that blind.
[4:41] Speaker 1: Well, we had a, I mean, we had a good
[4:43] Speaker 1: plan going in. I mean, it was, it was a
[4:46] Speaker 1: solid plan and, and I'm not going to say we
[4:48] Speaker 1: were never on deer because we were on, we were
[4:51] Speaker 1: on deer and we were on big deer, like fairly regularly.
[4:55] Speaker 1: I mean, really our boots on the ground, uh, Jeremy
[4:59] Speaker 1: like had a, had a wide variety of options for
[5:03] Speaker 1: us to mess it up. And we, we, we did
[5:05] Speaker 1: not let him down.
[5:09] Speaker 3: Hey, as long as you had a good time, that's
[5:10] Speaker 3: all I care about. Like I always tell people, all
[5:13] Speaker 3: you can ever ask for is an opportunity.
[5:16] Speaker 1: Yep. I mean, yeah. Okay. I left this muzzleloader behind,
[5:24] Speaker 1: but we ended up shooting it. And I'm like, okay, yeah,
[5:28] Speaker 1: it seems like it's on. And that gunshot's so wild.
[5:32] Speaker 1: I mean, I can throw out so many excuses, but
[5:35] Speaker 1: oh my gosh. Probably the biggest deer... up into that
[5:39] Speaker 1: point steps out and i blow i absolutely completely botched
[5:45] Speaker 1: two shots like and it's 100 i still remember 132
[5:50] Speaker 1: yards away i had two opportunities blew it ah and
[5:56] Speaker 1: i was.
[5:56] Speaker 4: Like let's make it harder let's make it harder this
[5:59] Speaker 4: time and take our bows why not.
[6:02] Speaker 1: So let's talk about the archery game in Iowa because,
[6:06] Speaker 1: and Jeremy, you can really talk about this because, you know,
[6:09] Speaker 1: last year we could have potentially drawn out, but you
[6:13] Speaker 1: were like, hey, let's give it a year rest. Let's
[6:17] Speaker 1: wait and see how the EHD problems do and kind
[6:20] Speaker 1: of explain EHD and why we have held off and
[6:25] Speaker 1: why we finally, like, accepted the draw.
[6:28] Speaker 3: Yeah, no, that's great. Great thing to talk about here.
[6:31] Speaker 3: We saw three years ago, unprecedented numbers of deer die
[6:35] Speaker 3: from EHD. And the worst thing from that is that
[6:41] Speaker 3: it typically occurs in September and October. The worst thing
[6:44] Speaker 3: for us is 80s, 80 degree temperatures that is in
[6:47] Speaker 3: September and October. It's a terrible time. That's when it
[6:50] Speaker 3: starts really blowing up on us. And I want to
[6:53] Speaker 3: say that conservatively talking to our deer biologist, he told
[6:56] Speaker 3: me in our county alone, that we lost conservatively 3,000
[7:01] Speaker 3: deer to EHD. Then on top of that, we harvested
[7:05] Speaker 3: about 2,500. So when you take a county that's roughly
[7:08] Speaker 3: 30 miles by 30 miles and the north third of
[7:12] Speaker 3: it is really not good deer habitat is farmland, egg
[7:15] Speaker 3: land that has very low deer density. So you shrink
[7:19] Speaker 3: that down to two thirds of that county and you
[7:21] Speaker 3: take conservatively again, 5,500 to 6,000 deer out of that area.
[7:27] Speaker 2: That's devastating.
[7:29] Speaker 3: That is hard numbers for people. So you guys holding
[7:33] Speaker 3: off for a year or two, in my opinion, was
[7:36] Speaker 3: the best thing. Last year, I didn't have a single
[7:38] Speaker 3: report of EHD deer. The year prior to, I had one.
[7:42] Speaker 3: So we're starting to see that recovery. Our numbers are
[7:44] Speaker 3: starting to go up. A lot of young deer, and
[7:47] Speaker 3: you still see those mature deer, and there are deer,
[7:50] Speaker 3: large deer being harvested still in Iowa. However, the age
[7:53] Speaker 3: structure changed with that EHD outbreak, and it typically is
[7:57] Speaker 3: The older deer are more susceptible to it. The does
[7:59] Speaker 3: and even the mature bucks are more susceptible to it
[8:02] Speaker 3: for whatever reason it is. We're also told that the
[8:05] Speaker 3: deer will basically breed an immunity into it. It used
[8:08] Speaker 3: to be an issue in the South, 20, 25 years.
[8:12] Speaker 3: They worked through that process where our first outbreak was
[8:16] Speaker 3: in 2012, where we saw nothing like what we saw
[8:19] Speaker 3: a couple of years ago, but it was still something
[8:21] Speaker 3: pretty substantial. And so we should be getting close to
[8:24] Speaker 3: that timeframe where we start seeing those like ESG not
[8:27] Speaker 3: being an issue hopefully anymore.
[8:29] Speaker 2: If the science holds true.
[8:31] Speaker 1: I hope so. I mean, I, I, that's the reason
[8:35] Speaker 1: why we were like kind of holding off and we
[8:37] Speaker 1: were like, man, it just doesn't, doesn't seem right. The
[8:39] Speaker 1: numbers aren't there, but, uh, this year, this year, it's
[8:44] Speaker 1: still going to be difficult because now we're picking up
[8:46] Speaker 1: our archery equipment and in lieu of an extended range device, uh,
[8:52] Speaker 1: like a muzzleloader. Um, what's, What does success look like
[8:59] Speaker 1: other than harvesting a deer? What does success typically for
[9:03] Speaker 1: a typical out-of-state person look like in the state of Iowa?
[9:09] Speaker 1: Because that's like a number one destination. I mean, it
[9:11] Speaker 1: might not be what the numbers were 10, 15 years
[9:15] Speaker 1: ago when it was really starting to hit its stride
[9:19] Speaker 1: as the number one destination for trophy whitetails. but it's
[9:23] Speaker 1: still up there. I mean, it's still in the top five,
[9:25] Speaker 1: I would suggest. Um, but what does the success look
[9:29] Speaker 1: like now? Either one of you can chime in on
[9:35] Speaker 1: this one.
[9:36] Speaker 4: Oh, that's not like a DNR question.
[9:40] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[9:41] Speaker 3: I think what you would look at honestly is, and
[9:45] Speaker 3: maybe these numbers are different.
[9:46] Speaker 2: Maybe you've seen this.
[9:47] Speaker 4: I read a.
[9:48] Speaker 3: Stat or heard it somewhere that per archery hunters that, uh,
[9:53] Speaker 3: what is it like 10% of our tree hunters in
[9:55] Speaker 3: a life will ever harvest a.
[9:56] Speaker 2: Pope and young deer. And that's across the United States.
[10:00] Speaker 3: And i thought that was a pretty substantial number because
[10:03] Speaker 3: as far as it opened my eyes i thought that
[10:06] Speaker 3: this would be a lot higher than that yeah you
[10:08] Speaker 3: guys should have the opportunity if if you put some
[10:12] Speaker 3: time in and multiple pope and young deer now is
[10:15] Speaker 3: that a trophy to you guys some of you might
[10:17] Speaker 3: be some of it might not be uh You know,
[10:20] Speaker 3: living here, I don't want to sound spoiled. 125-inch deer,
[10:23] Speaker 3: I'm not picking up my bow.
[10:25] Speaker 2: That's just what it is.
[10:26] Speaker 3: And again, it sounds arrogant, but we are blessed with
[10:29] Speaker 3: that side of things. Now, is it, if you put
[10:33] Speaker 3: in a week, two weeks, a month, however long you
[10:35] Speaker 3: all want to be here, October 1 through the first
[10:38] Speaker 3: Friday in December is what you got the first in
[10:40] Speaker 3: of it. If you guys want to stay the.
[10:41] Speaker 2: Whole time, great.
[10:43] Speaker 3: You're going to see a large deer at some point.
[10:45] Speaker 3: And by large, I would say that 150-inch deer Plus,
[10:51] Speaker 3: there should be a possibility at it. Being smart, using
[10:55] Speaker 3: woodmanship skills, that should be an opportunity for you.
[10:59] Speaker 2: Even with our low deer numbers.
[11:01] Speaker 3: I mean, I ran cameras last year and had multiple
[11:04] Speaker 3: deer over 150 or messing with 150 that did not
[11:08] Speaker 3: get harvested.
[11:09] Speaker 2: That are still around. And I haven't put out any
[11:11] Speaker 2: cameras this year.
[11:12] Speaker 3: So at some point, we're going to figure it out
[11:14] Speaker 3: if they're sticking around the area or if they moved
[11:16] Speaker 3: or new ones moved in.
[11:17] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[11:19] Speaker 1: Yeah. It's, it's always, man, it's like this, this lull
[11:22] Speaker 1: right now is like the hardest part of waiting. And
[11:25] Speaker 1: that's why I like Thomas Allen over here. He, he
[11:29] Speaker 1: is a trail cam nut and we're going to get
[11:30] Speaker 1: into a little bit more trail cam talk, you know,
[11:33] Speaker 1: at the, you know, the, the second half of the show,
[11:36] Speaker 1: because I've got something here I want to set up
[11:37] Speaker 1: and get it, get it going. And I'm going to
[11:39] Speaker 1: have to ship it off to Thomas Allen because he's
[11:41] Speaker 1: a little bit closer than me for putting up trail cameras. But,
[11:45] Speaker 1: but let's talk a little bit about the, like the
[11:47] Speaker 1: scouting and, pre-season timeframe, Thomas, that you've kind of, you've
[11:52] Speaker 1: kind of got a good process and you've always had
[11:55] Speaker 1: a good process of, of understanding like when you need
[11:58] Speaker 1: to start scouting and, and if it's too early or
[12:00] Speaker 1: too late, uh, talk a little bit about that.
[12:04] Speaker 4: Well, first of all, Jeremy King, uh, I've got my
[12:07] Speaker 4: calendar right here. Uh, I'm going to flip to August
[12:10] Speaker 4: and it looks like wide open. I'm coming to Iowa.
[12:15] Speaker 4: I'm going to spend some time down there. Uh, we're
[12:17] Speaker 4: going to hang some cameras. We're going to hang out.
[12:18] Speaker 4: We're going to hit the road, uh, talk to some landowners.
[12:21] Speaker 4: And just like before, Jeremy is kind of the, uh,
[12:24] Speaker 4: one of the, well, he is, you know, he's going
[12:25] Speaker 4: to make this trip possible for Kevin and I. Um, and,
[12:28] Speaker 4: and we're going to, you know, we'll take care of him,
[12:30] Speaker 4: make sure we buy him a Casey's pizza or two and,
[12:32] Speaker 4: and do what we have to, but it does. If you,
[12:35] Speaker 4: so Jeremy's right. There is a very low percentage of
[12:38] Speaker 4: successful archery hunters in tag out on a Pope and
[12:41] Speaker 4: young deer. Um, I don't believe in shooting Pope and
[12:43] Speaker 4: young deer. I believe in shooting them after they lose
[12:47] Speaker 4: their antlers. That's what that guy has right there. That's
[12:49] Speaker 4: another story for another conversation. This guy right here was
[12:53] Speaker 4: the last archery deer I shot in Iowa, uh, a
[12:56] Speaker 4: known four year old scored upper one 30. So when
[12:59] Speaker 4: we talk size or standards, I think it's all relative
[13:03] Speaker 4: based on what you're seeing and cameras are going to
[13:05] Speaker 4: give you part of the story. Boots on the ground
[13:07] Speaker 4: is going to give you a part of the story.
[13:08] Speaker 4: I've always been into old bucks. I like I like
[13:11] Speaker 4: a deer that is, you know, a deer that's one
[13:13] Speaker 4: hundred and seventy inches and five year old compared to
[13:16] Speaker 4: one hundred and twenty inch jacked up buck that's five
[13:19] Speaker 4: year old. They're the same animal in their own mind.
[13:21] Speaker 4: They have the same experience or whatever. So, you know,
[13:24] Speaker 4: I'm looking for an old buck. I'd love to get
[13:26] Speaker 4: my biggest ever, but I think I'm coming with the
[13:28] Speaker 4: expectation of making sure I practiced hard because I don't
[13:32] Speaker 4: want to mess it up like I did the last
[13:34] Speaker 4: time we came. I'm planning to make multiple trips down.
[13:37] Speaker 4: I plan on being there in August to hang cameras,
[13:40] Speaker 4: to do a lot of the preseason work. I'd like
[13:44] Speaker 4: to have them up earlier. Work just didn't allow it.
[13:46] Speaker 4: I got a wedding this weekend. I've got work next
[13:48] Speaker 4: week and then work the next week I can't get
[13:50] Speaker 4: out of. So you go when you can. And I
[13:53] Speaker 4: think that if you're willing to put in that extra time, Kevin,
[13:55] Speaker 4: that's the most important thing. Put in the time as
[13:58] Speaker 4: you're leading up to the season. And that means... hanging cameras.
[14:01] Speaker 4: If we're going to sit in saddles, we want to
[14:03] Speaker 4: go prepare some trees. If we're going to put up
[14:05] Speaker 4: some stands, we want to get those stands up because
[14:07] Speaker 4: we don't want to show up that last week of
[14:10] Speaker 4: October and have no trees set up or no stands
[14:13] Speaker 4: put together. So we do have some work to do.
[14:16] Speaker 4: It's going to be a part of the pregame plan.
[14:17] Speaker 4: But once, once you, you know, sweat yourself out of
[14:21] Speaker 4: water and that Iowa August heat, you need to be
[14:24] Speaker 4: like ready for the season to start. So at least
[14:27] Speaker 4: two trips in August for me, Maybe one in September
[14:30] Speaker 4: is like a camera adjustment thing, which we can save
[14:33] Speaker 4: for the second half. Because I'll tell you this much,
[14:36] Speaker 4: what you set your cameras up on right now are
[14:38] Speaker 4: not where they need to be come late September. So
[14:41] Speaker 4: we can talk about that, but it takes time on
[14:42] Speaker 4: the ground. And I don't care where you're going. If
[14:45] Speaker 4: you spend, let's just say anywhere from $ 600 to $ 2, 000
[14:50] Speaker 4: on a deer tag, you want to be successful, right?
[14:52] Speaker 4: If you're not going with an outfitter, you're not paying
[14:55] Speaker 4: for someone else's land and scouting, then you've got to
[14:57] Speaker 4: make time beforehand to get there and check things out.
[14:59] Speaker 1: Yeah. I, I, man, I got no issues with that.
[15:03] Speaker 1: Now Jeremy's like, they like, I love having these two
[15:06] Speaker 1: on because they are like kind of polar opposites and
[15:10] Speaker 1: sometimes on how they prepare. So Jeremy, what's your philosophy?
[15:15] Speaker 1: Show up and hunt.
[15:16] Speaker 2: Oh, you don't, you don't want mine.
[15:18] Speaker 3: Uh, actually, yeah, the deer I harvested last year, uh,
[15:21] Speaker 3: was one that I, I didn't have cameras, didn't run.
[15:24] Speaker 3: I had to stand there. I had trim stuff. I,
[15:27] Speaker 3: I didn't have a, I had a target deer. I wanted,
[15:30] Speaker 3: he put this, he put the, he snuck by me
[15:32] Speaker 3: multiple times. I had some great phone video of him
[15:37] Speaker 3: tending a doe.
[15:38] Speaker 2: At 80 yards.
[15:38] Speaker 3: But when you got the stick and string in your hand,
[15:40] Speaker 3: I don't have a pin for that. And I got
[15:42] Speaker 3: a pin for 25. That's all I got. If it's
[15:44] Speaker 3: under that, I'm usually, I can scare him pretty good.
[15:47] Speaker 4: So I can practice so much that you don't, it
[15:50] Speaker 4: doesn't matter. Like you shoot all year. You're at how
[15:52] Speaker 4: many 3d tournaments and, backyard shooting like how many targets
[15:55] Speaker 4: do you have uh.
[15:57] Speaker 3: One yeah yeah it's a nice one though so i
[16:02] Speaker 3: focus real well i get it i make sure it
[16:05] Speaker 3: works all good and then i with work and everything
[16:07] Speaker 3: else it's hard to go out all the time but
[16:10] Speaker 3: the the interesting part is yeah we do hunt different
[16:13] Speaker 3: and i wanted to touch on one other thing real
[16:15] Speaker 3: quick about as far as a positive maybe on our
[16:17] Speaker 3: deer herd having numbers a little bit lower i was
[16:20] Speaker 3: thinking about this while you're talking trail cameras i uh
[16:24] Speaker 3: I did have a camera, multiple cameras out, but there's
[16:27] Speaker 3: two different properties about two and a half miles as
[16:30] Speaker 3: a crow flies away. And in one less than a
[16:33] Speaker 3: six hour period, I had a picture of one buck
[16:35] Speaker 3: with a broken antler. He's an eight point mainframe eight
[16:38] Speaker 3: with a broken antler on one side. I had a
[16:40] Speaker 3: picture of him two and a half miles away. Like
[16:43] Speaker 3: six hours later, I had a picture of him on
[16:44] Speaker 3: another camera on another property where I was hunting. And
[16:48] Speaker 3: that deer had ranged that far where normally when we
[16:51] Speaker 3: have higher deer density, We didn't see that kind of range.
[16:53] Speaker 3: Like those bucks didn't have to go as far to
[16:55] Speaker 3: find those does. Now those bucks were on their feet
[16:59] Speaker 3: a lot more. So where we find pictures now or
[17:01] Speaker 3: see a deer now, it's off the table where it
[17:04] Speaker 3: might end up at.
[17:05] Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. I, you know what? I mean, that's a,
[17:09] Speaker 1: that's a great segue in, um, let's, let's get on
[17:13] Speaker 1: the trail cam discussion, uh, right after a message from
[17:16] Speaker 1: these sponsors. looking to trim a few lbs out of

[20:21] Speaker 1: done that. Pistol?
[20:22] Speaker 4: Check.
[20:23] Speaker 1: Rifle?
[20:23] Speaker 4: Check.
[20:24] Speaker 1: Yeah, we got it all. Force on force? We do
[20:28] Speaker 1: that every now and then, too. Bring your bruises. Instructor development.
[20:32] Speaker 1: Welcome to the Thunderdome of learning. It's more than training.
[20:36] Speaker 1: It's range-ready because real life doesn't come with a respawn button.
[20:42] Speaker 1: We are back, and we were getting into a story
[20:45] Speaker 1: while we were resetting because I'm standing up now. I'm
[20:47] Speaker 1: going to do a little project, have these guys kind
[20:49] Speaker 1: of walk me through it. So what happened? You were
[20:52] Speaker 1: in a tree stand?
[20:54] Speaker 2: Is this part of it?
[20:55] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, this is 100% part of it because this
[20:57] Speaker 1: is story time with KJ.
[21:00] Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know if we want to share this part.
[21:02] Speaker 4: Oh, come on. I mean, I'll share it. I don't mind.
[21:05] Speaker 4: Cause I was a part of it in a weird
[21:07] Speaker 4: sort of way.
[21:08] Speaker 1: You were, how are you a part of this?
[21:11] Speaker 4: Well, let's, let's start with this. Let's start with this. Yes.
[21:13] Speaker 4: We're opposites. Uh, I love Jeremy, like a brother. Um,
[21:16] Speaker 4: we work on the same result that we might have
[21:19] Speaker 4: a different path there and I'll give him props. He's
[21:20] Speaker 4: done way better than me on about everything. Fair enough.
[21:23] Speaker 4: But one thing Jeremy has not learned to do is
[21:27] Speaker 4: hold it while he's in the tree. So Uh, he's,
[21:30] Speaker 4: he's done good. There've been some times where he's made
[21:32] Speaker 4: long sits and he's like, ah, you'll be proud. I
[21:34] Speaker 4: sat till 8am in the morning or, and I think
[21:36] Speaker 4: this particular day, like we crossed the six hour mark
[21:39] Speaker 4: and he was there till after lunch. Um, but there
[21:42] Speaker 4: was a certain point in time, either that day or
[21:44] Speaker 4: the day before I got a picture from him because, well,
[21:47] Speaker 4: we're close this way. And it, it involved, um, I
[21:50] Speaker 4: guess some biological material, we'll say it. And I think
[21:53] Speaker 4: the term he coined was mud fountain. So we're going
[21:56] Speaker 4: to use that word. And I guess when you're in
[21:58] Speaker 4: that situation, a guy's got to do what a guy's
[22:00] Speaker 4: got to do. Write that one down.
[22:03] Speaker 1: Hey, if you, if you've hunted at all, you have
[22:05] Speaker 1: had one of these, like I I'm like all of
[22:09] Speaker 1: our friends, like, Hey, I may have crapped my pants. Like,
[22:13] Speaker 1: I'm sorry, but like, I couldn't hold anymore. Like if
[22:17] Speaker 1: you've been in the woods long enough, this has happened
[22:19] Speaker 1: to you.
[22:21] Speaker 2: I agree.
[22:23] Speaker 4: Like dude wipes with you, Jeremy, like something.
[22:26] Speaker 2: Well, I do. I do. I did.
[22:31] Speaker 3: Except I had an incident that hunt prior to where
[22:35] Speaker 3: I had to hurry and put.
[22:36] Speaker 2: It in the backpack.
[22:37] Speaker 3: And then I took it out of my backpack when
[22:38] Speaker 3: I got back to the truck to put everything in
[22:40] Speaker 3: the tote. And I forgot to reput in my backpack
[22:43] Speaker 3: and stash it again, which then caused a problem when
[22:47] Speaker 3: I have 170 plus inch deer at 80 yards for
[22:50] Speaker 3: hours in front of me and mother nature calls me.
[22:55] Speaker 3: what do you do from the tree stand? You, you mud,
[22:57] Speaker 3: you mud Falcon. I mean, that's just what happens.
[23:01] Speaker 2: Uh, and I didn't have any, so.
[23:02] Speaker 3: I lost part of a t-shirt and while I was detrousering,
[23:07] Speaker 3: my pistol fell out of my holster and hit every
[23:09] Speaker 3: rung on the ladder on the way down. I thought
[23:11] Speaker 3: it was going to shoot me. This is just the
[23:14] Speaker 3: way this will end. The deer stand up, look at me.
[23:17] Speaker 3: And I'm like, well, this is, this is it. Like,
[23:20] Speaker 3: this is how I die. However, after some time, he
[23:23] Speaker 3: laid back down, I got re-trousered, and everything was good,
[23:28] Speaker 3: except he didn't walk by.
[23:29] Speaker 2: Neither did any other near surprise.
[23:33] Speaker 1: I could, like, the thoughts going through your mind during
[23:36] Speaker 1: this episode, I'm sure, is going like, I mean, I'm
[23:42] Speaker 1: going to just jump out of the stand right now.
[23:44] Speaker 1: I can't look anybody in the eyes after this. No
[23:47] Speaker 1: deer is.
[23:47] Speaker 4: Going to look at people in the eyes. I'm going
[23:49] Speaker 4: to just one up him just to touch. Just give
[23:51] Speaker 4: me a minute. Just a couple of weeks ago. And
[23:53] Speaker 4: we've revisited these on occasion. I was out on the
[23:56] Speaker 4: lake fishing and I kind of you know, you kind
[23:59] Speaker 4: of feel like you can get through it. Right. You
[24:00] Speaker 4: kind of get that mindset like it's going to breathe
[24:02] Speaker 4: and sit down, occasionally get through it. Well, let's just
[24:05] Speaker 4: say push came to shove. I had to call my
[24:07] Speaker 4: wife because I didn't have any. cleaning materials in the
[24:12] Speaker 4: boat so i get to the boat ramp and i
[24:14] Speaker 4: did the knees together hunched over duck walk to get
[24:16] Speaker 4: to the truck to take advantage of four subway napkins
[24:19] Speaker 4: that i had and i didn't make it to the
[24:21] Speaker 4: side of the parking lot it was just out there
[24:23] Speaker 4: in the middle of open and everybody driving past on
[24:25] Speaker 4: the road i made eye contact.
[24:26] Speaker 1: With and they knew exactly what was happening in my
[24:29] Speaker 1: life they knew it so hold a second you had
[24:35] Speaker 1: all this water around you're telling me you had all
[24:37] Speaker 1: this water around you.
[24:39] Speaker 4: And I got a thing about that.
[24:41] Speaker 1: It didn't cross your mind to go. Look around for
[24:45] Speaker 1: a second and go, I.
[24:45] Speaker 4: Didn't want to come back to that spot where I
[24:47] Speaker 4: was catching fifth efficiency, baby Ruth floating there. Like I
[24:50] Speaker 4: didn't have time for that. I was looking for fish.
[24:51] Speaker 4: I was having a good time. I'm a conservationist at heart,
[24:55] Speaker 4: you know?
[24:56] Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
[24:56] Speaker 2: Okay.
[24:57] Speaker 4: Let's get it.
[24:58] Speaker 1: Let's get into trails.
[24:59] Speaker 4: Where were we? Where were we? Oh yeah.
[25:01] Speaker 1: Oh, we got DRL, but that was, that, oh my gosh. I,
[25:05] Speaker 1: I got, we're just taking gun.
[25:06] Speaker 4: I got to compose myself today.
[25:09] Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. Okay. So getting into this trail camp
[25:12] Speaker 1: talk and back on track guys, um, and, and talking
[25:17] Speaker 1: about your setup and everything else. So I have a,
[25:19] Speaker 1: I have a mulchery edge three here in front of me. Um,
[25:24] Speaker 1: and we were going to do a little detective work
[25:26] Speaker 1: on it because, uh, there's some damaged parts on this too,
[25:29] Speaker 1: that were rendered this. Like I couldn't, I can't completely
[25:32] Speaker 1: insert the battery compartment for some reason. It just got
[25:35] Speaker 1: damaged like cattle being a problem. And like the sensor
[25:40] Speaker 1: screen where like the sensor goes off, um, is pretty
[25:44] Speaker 1: chewed up. And then on the bottom of the, uh,
[25:47] Speaker 1: the battery compartment on the face of it, it looks
[25:50] Speaker 1: like someone took a knife and just, uh, I guess
[25:55] Speaker 1: went to town on it. I mean, I want to
[25:57] Speaker 1: hear your best guess on what happened to this trail camera.
[26:00] Speaker 1: Cause I'll write legit. I do not know.
[26:03] Speaker 4: I mean, I looked at the picture. I mean, it
[26:05] Speaker 4: sure looks like it could be a woodpecker. I've seen
[26:07] Speaker 4: those things hang upside down, but I don't know.
[26:09] Speaker 1: Like, it got me thinking about, like, because I had
[26:11] Speaker 1: this thing sitting there, and I'm like, man, like, what
[26:13] Speaker 1: happened to it? How could they change it, like, to
[26:16] Speaker 1: better the experience and not have a camera go down?
[26:19] Speaker 1: Because this thing was running really good. Real crisp pictures.
[26:24] Speaker 1: They've got a lot of features on them, but they
[26:25] Speaker 1: came out with this Edge Pro, and I was going to, like,
[26:29] Speaker 1: are my resident, like, trail cam expert which is is
[26:33] Speaker 1: thomas allen um talking about setting your cameras up because
[26:37] Speaker 1: they've got a lot of features in this one thing
[26:39] Speaker 1: i did notice is the where the woodpecker got the
[26:43] Speaker 1: edge three the sensor area they did a matte finish
[26:47] Speaker 1: on it so it's not as not reflective which i
[26:50] Speaker 1: think that's that's gonna help.
[26:54] Speaker 4: It's interesting one of the things that and this again
[26:56] Speaker 4: this is a a So I can't criticize Jeremy. I mean,
[27:00] Speaker 4: I might try here, but you know, he and I
[27:02] Speaker 4: have a little bit different approach to our camera setup and,
[27:05] Speaker 4: and he's gotten some, arguably some of my favorite trail
[27:08] Speaker 4: camera pictures that I've ever seen. And I know that
[27:11] Speaker 4: he knows how to get them. He, he, he takes
[27:13] Speaker 4: his camera hanging serious enough to keep up with it,
[27:17] Speaker 4: but he knows I'm a little over the top and
[27:19] Speaker 4: he'll make fun of me and I deserve it. But
[27:21] Speaker 4: there's a couple of things that I, when I have
[27:23] Speaker 4: a pack, I have like a little kit that I
[27:27] Speaker 4: take for, for hanging trail cameras. I got a handsaw,
[27:30] Speaker 4: I've got a little pruner. And if I am going
[27:33] Speaker 4: to be on a grass field, I will take a
[27:35] Speaker 4: weed whacker with me. And this is, again, this is
[27:37] Speaker 4: a Jeremy King suggestion. I bought a battery powered weed whacker,
[27:41] Speaker 4: which those things are amazing by the way, half the
[27:44] Speaker 4: weight and it breaks in half. So that anytime we're
[27:47] Speaker 4: going to be in like a grassy scenario with August
[27:49] Speaker 4: trail cameras, like that grass moving, it will affect the camera,
[27:54] Speaker 4: but you need to stay on um and again i
[27:58] Speaker 4: this annoys me i know it annoys jeremy but if
[28:00] Speaker 4: you got 400 photos of nothing you know that or
[28:04] Speaker 4: the grass blowing then then you you know or stick
[28:06] Speaker 4: in front of the camera then you've kind of set
[28:08] Speaker 4: yourself up to a to the batteries up b um
[28:12] Speaker 4: you're not getting the pictures of what you want to
[28:13] Speaker 4: see and if you drop the sensitivity down too far
[28:15] Speaker 4: you might be actually missing opportunities that deer as they
[28:18] Speaker 4: come by so yeah in our case kevin we're lucky
[28:20] Speaker 4: jeremy's our our boots on the ground. If we got
[28:23] Speaker 4: a certain camera that quits working, you know, he's probably
[28:26] Speaker 4: going to charge us a pretty penny and rightly so,
[28:29] Speaker 4: but he can go fix it. Right. Whereas if I'm
[28:31] Speaker 4: here in Minnesota, I would have to drive down to
[28:35] Speaker 4: fix a camera that ran out of batteries or a
[28:37] Speaker 4: branch hit or whatever. And, you know, that's part of
[28:40] Speaker 4: the traveling hunter conundrum is how do you maintain your
[28:43] Speaker 4: cameras if you've got them set up hundreds of miles away? And,
[28:47] Speaker 4: you know, Jeremy can talk about this because this is
[28:49] Speaker 4: a part of a part of what he's into now.
[28:52] Speaker 4: is providing a service for that. But really you have
[28:55] Speaker 4: to make sure that your camera is going to work,
[28:56] Speaker 4: do your very best to have good batteries in it.
[28:59] Speaker 4: If you're going to use a solar charger, make sure
[29:01] Speaker 4: that it's getting the longest part of the day of
[29:03] Speaker 4: sun to put a little extra juice in your rechargeable battery.
[29:06] Speaker 4: And then second of all, trim or third of all,
[29:08] Speaker 4: trim out that area around your camera so that at
[29:11] Speaker 4: the very least you don't have it, you know, all
[29:13] Speaker 4: the junk blown in front of it, setting it off.
[29:16] Speaker 4: That is my, my plan. Whenever I'm hanging cameras here,
[29:20] Speaker 4: For turkeys in the spring, deer in Iowa, I want
[29:23] Speaker 4: to make sure that I don't have interference.
[29:26] Speaker 2: I think that's all great.
[29:28] Speaker 3: One thing I found last year, too, is try to
[29:32] Speaker 3: get the most bang for your buck. I would try
[29:34] Speaker 3: to do some lithium double a batteries on all my
[29:36] Speaker 3: cameras and i ordered it from amazon seemed relatively cheap
[29:40] Speaker 3: it was relatively cheap at the time but i noticed
[29:42] Speaker 3: when i put those in my cameras that the deer
[29:44] Speaker 3: slowly started kind of avoiding my camera and for whatever
[29:48] Speaker 3: reason that brand or something when i opened up the
[29:50] Speaker 3: ziploc bag you could just smell like a chemical smell
[29:54] Speaker 3: that i stored my extra batteries in So I don't
[29:57] Speaker 3: know what was.
[29:58] Speaker 2: Going on with that, but it was weird.
[29:59] Speaker 3: I even went to scent spray down, trying to do
[30:01] Speaker 3: some scent eliminator on them.
[30:03] Speaker 2: They still stunk. So, again, minor things like that that
[30:07] Speaker 2: I had to make an adjustment.
[30:09] Speaker 3: I just buy good batteries now, and name brand probably
[30:12] Speaker 3: is the best suggestion. Trying to skimp, probably get what
[30:15] Speaker 3: you pay for sometimes.
[30:17] Speaker 4: You know, it's interesting, too. I think that if we're
[30:22] Speaker 4: going to get down to being honest about brands, I
[30:25] Speaker 4: don't know that I've seen a difference in performance between
[30:28] Speaker 4: Duracell and Energizer. I think they're both probably as equally
[30:31] Speaker 4: as good, but the best deal I've been able to
[30:33] Speaker 4: find for a trail camera junkie is, and maybe these
[30:37] Speaker 4: packs are somewhere else, but Home Depot has a 36
[30:40] Speaker 4: AA pack. So you can get 36 batteries. I think
[30:45] Speaker 4: it's 21 bucks. It's expensive to buy all those batteries nowadays.
[30:48] Speaker 4: But you get the most bang for your buck on
[30:51] Speaker 4: that package as opposed to going by and, you know,
[30:53] Speaker 4: a four-pack from Walmart. Because the fewer batteries in a pack,
[30:56] Speaker 4: you're going to pay more per battery. And the math
[30:58] Speaker 4: that I figured, that Home Depot deal is the best
[31:00] Speaker 4: one to go.
[31:01] Speaker 1: So are you finding a difference in alkaline versus lithium?
[31:08] Speaker 4: Well, the lithium batteries that I use, and I have
[31:12] Speaker 4: some lithiums for my Moultrie Edge cameras. Um, I've got a,
[31:16] Speaker 4: I also run a slew of tactic cams and anytime
[31:20] Speaker 4: there's a lithium battery, I think that your battery life
[31:24] Speaker 4: is going to be questionable based on the weather and
[31:26] Speaker 4: the conditions. But if I want to take advantage of
[31:29] Speaker 4: a solar charger, you got to have that lithium. And
[31:32] Speaker 4: that's the deal. If you can get a camera put
[31:34] Speaker 4: in a spot, maybe way back in on a property
[31:36] Speaker 4: that you're not going to visit. And of course we're
[31:38] Speaker 4: talking cell cameras here. You want to have service. That
[31:41] Speaker 4: lithium battery is critical to run that solar charger, but
[31:44] Speaker 4: that's the deal. I've got cameras I've had up since
[31:46] Speaker 4: April that are still running at 100% right now.
[31:50] Speaker 1: All right. Let me ask you about this. This is
[31:54] Speaker 1: an external battery, and I haven't used one like this.
[31:59] Speaker 1: I've always been either an alkaline or a lithium, really
[32:02] Speaker 1: whatever I can find at a good price. These external
[32:06] Speaker 1: rechargeable batteries from the manufacturer, How do those play a
[32:10] Speaker 1: role in how you proceed with these? Because this is
[32:12] Speaker 1: coming to you. I'm going to be sending this to
[32:15] Speaker 1: you to set up. I don't know how long this
[32:19] Speaker 1: is going to last.
[32:22] Speaker 4: Excuse me. I would say they're going to be similar.
[32:26] Speaker 4: I will tell you, too, it seems like the batteries
[32:29] Speaker 4: are different, that you don't get the exact same run
[32:31] Speaker 4: time out of each lithium cartridge. So that independent cartridge
[32:35] Speaker 4: is going to make up the difference for what runs
[32:37] Speaker 4: in those batteries. Is that a 12 AA battery pack? Yep. Yep.
[32:42] Speaker 4: So I I'm, I'm curious to know how they run,
[32:46] Speaker 4: you know, compared to each other, but then your time,
[32:49] Speaker 4: in my opinion, and this is take it for what
[32:52] Speaker 4: it's worth. I feel like I get better life out
[32:54] Speaker 4: of the AA batteries in a, in a moderate condition
[32:59] Speaker 4: type situation where if it's super cold, all bets are off.
[33:03] Speaker 4: You never know what's going to happen. Um, but like
[33:05] Speaker 4: if we were to hang a camera today in my backyard,
[33:08] Speaker 4: two cameras, one with lithium cartridge or one with double A's,
[33:12] Speaker 4: I think the double A would probably last till the
[33:14] Speaker 4: first of the year. And you'd probably get three quarters
[33:17] Speaker 4: of the time out of that lithium. Now, the thing
[33:19] Speaker 4: of it is you can just run out there and,
[33:22] Speaker 4: you know, you're only buying those batteries, you know, twice, right?
[33:24] Speaker 4: You got a replacement for each camera. So in the
[33:26] Speaker 4: long run, it pays for itself. And then if you
[33:28] Speaker 4: have the solar charger on there, then you're golden. So
[33:31] Speaker 4: I think the trade-off is spend a little bit more
[33:34] Speaker 4: money on two lithium inserts and a solar charger that
[33:38] Speaker 4: attaches the camera. And you don't got to go buy those,
[33:41] Speaker 4: those 36 packs from home Depot. That is a great
[33:43] Speaker 4: alternative in my mind. Nice.
[33:45] Speaker 1: All right. Well, man, it, it seems like this ran
[33:50] Speaker 1: so quick. Like it really does seem like it. So
[33:53] Speaker 1: we're going to be revisiting this. We're going to have
[33:55] Speaker 1: these guys on. Cause this is a, this is a journey. Um,
[33:58] Speaker 1: Iowa archery season is a journey. This isn't a short run, uh, uh,
[34:03] Speaker 1: get it over with and get back type of situation.
[34:06] Speaker 1: So we're definitely going to have these two back on to,
[34:08] Speaker 1: to talk about how it's going. Um, but looking forward
[34:12] Speaker 1: to the journey with these guys, it's going.
[34:15] Speaker 4: To be a lot of fun. I can't wait.
[34:16] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[34:17] Speaker 2: I'm excited. There's just nothing better.
[34:19] Speaker 3: If you're an outdoorsman, then experiencing an Iowa rut, you know,
[34:22] Speaker 3: it's right up there with an elk rut in the mountains.
[34:24] Speaker 2: So this is pretty cool.
[34:26] Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
[34:27] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[34:30] Speaker 4: The biggest thing is, is we we've got work to do.
[34:32] Speaker 4: We've got to get started KJ. And I know that,
[34:35] Speaker 4: I know that you're busy, but if you'll send me
[34:37] Speaker 4: the cameras, I will hang them up and I will
[34:39] Speaker 4: have Jeremy drive me around.
[34:41] Speaker 1: That sounds like a deal, but hopefully if I can
[34:44] Speaker 1: coordinate my dates, I will be up there to hang
[34:46] Speaker 1: at least one, a couple of days with you.
[34:50] Speaker 4: I love it. Let's do it.
[34:52] Speaker 1: All right. Jeremy King, Mr. Iowa and Thomas Allen, Mr. Minnesota.
[34:57] Speaker 1: Thank you guys for joining me.
[35:00] Speaker 4: Thank you. Appreciate you having us, buddy.
[35:02] Speaker 1: All right. You gun talk hunters, you know the deal.
[35:04] Speaker 1: Keep those muzzles and your arrows pointing in a safe
[35:07] Speaker 1: direction and always be on the hunt.
