[0:03] Speaker 1: So you've made it through three hours of the regular
[0:06] Speaker 1: show on Terrestrial Radio, and you wanted a little bit more,
[0:09] Speaker 1: so that's why you found the Gun Talk After Show podcast,
[0:12] Speaker 1: where we saved all the best things that we can't
[0:14] Speaker 1: say on regular radio. Now here's Tom, Michelle, and Jim
[0:17] Speaker 1: for the Gun.
[0:17] Speaker 2: Talk After Show.
[0:19] Speaker 3: It's that time again where we gather to chat around
[0:21] Speaker 3: the old fire here. Hear the fire crackling.
[0:25] Speaker 4: What time is that? It's after show time. Oh, I
[0:31] Speaker 4: was all in with the fire and the crackling and,
[0:33] Speaker 4: you know, the s'mores and stories.
[0:35] Speaker 5: It didn't sound like a Rankin-Bass cartoon intro. I don't
[0:38] Speaker 5: know what.
[0:42] Speaker 3: It's after show time.
[0:43] Speaker 5: Exactly.
[0:44] Speaker 3: Go on, kids. Oh, my goodness. I got Jim Kinsey,
[0:49] Speaker 3: Michelle Cleveland. Hello, my friends.
[0:51] Speaker 5: Hello, everybody. Howdy, howdy, howdy. We're going to be.
[0:53] Speaker 3: Talking about BB guns and regulating those and what that's
[0:56] Speaker 3: all about. We've got some other things to talk about,
[0:58] Speaker 3: but first, let's go grab Howard. Hey, Howard, thanks for
[1:01] Speaker 3: holding on. Welcome. Hello, Tom.
[1:04] Speaker 6: As I told Michelle, this is going to be a long,
[1:09] Speaker 6: convoluted road through the backwoods and trails of West Virginia
[1:14] Speaker 6: to get to a question at the end.
[1:16] Speaker 4: Oh, can I sing Almost Heaven in the background?
[1:19] Speaker 3: A little John Denver going on here.
[1:23] Speaker 5: I was going to put a pot of coffee on.
[1:24] Speaker 3: Oh, there you go.
[1:26] Speaker 4: I love that song.
[1:28] Speaker 3: All right, Howard, you have the floor. Go for it.
[1:30] Speaker 6: Okay, so I'm getting ready for my annual fall pilgrimage
[1:35] Speaker 6: to visit Chris in Louisiana at Range Ready, and I
[1:39] Speaker 6: know he doesn't want to hear that, but I've already
[1:41] Speaker 6: paid my money, so, you know, that is what it is.
[1:44] Speaker 4: Warnings out there.
[1:45] Speaker 3: We're going to put extra guards on the gate.
[1:49] Speaker 6: So, in doing so, I'm going to the gun room. Yes,
[1:54] Speaker 6: gun room. And I'm thinking, you know, I've got a
[1:58] Speaker 6: lot of things here that I haven't shot in a while,
[2:01] Speaker 6: and I could use some money for other things. And so,
[2:06] Speaker 6: in that endeavor, I contacted Dury's and came up with
[2:12] Speaker 6: a prize. I mean, I can go into all the
[2:15] Speaker 6: convoluted details, but it was... Twelve rifles and three pistols.
[2:19] Speaker 6: They sent the boxes. I packed them up and I
[2:22] Speaker 6: sent them out. And Jack at Dury's was a pleasure
[2:26] Speaker 6: to deal with.
[2:28] Speaker 3: Isn't that a great experience?
[2:31] Speaker 6: Yes. And did I get it? Exactly what I wanted
[2:36] Speaker 6: for them, no, but they're also a business, and I understand, so,
[2:40] Speaker 6: you know, that's life. But everyone likes a little bit
[2:44] Speaker 6: more money.
[2:45] Speaker 3: Anyway.
[2:46] Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[2:47] Speaker 3: Harold, we all want more for our guns, but are
[2:50] Speaker 3: we willing to put up with people coming to our
[2:52] Speaker 3: house and trying to sell them one at a time,
[2:54] Speaker 3: or would we rather say, look, Dury's will write you
[2:57] Speaker 3: a check, and they're going to take 30% off because
[3:00] Speaker 3: they need the 30% markup, and you go, okay, fine,
[3:03] Speaker 3: you guys got to make a living, too. We'll get it.
[3:05] Speaker 6: That's right, and they treated me fair. They actually gave
[3:09] Speaker 6: me a little bit more than I thought I might
[3:11] Speaker 6: have gotten, but shh, don't tell them.
[3:13] Speaker 4: And now they're out of your way.
[3:17] Speaker 6: Anyway, I'm going through the gun room afterwards, and I'm
[3:21] Speaker 6: sitting there and reorganizing things, and I'm going, where did
[3:25] Speaker 6: that come from? Oh, yeah, I had that one. Okay, okay, okay, okay.
[3:33] Speaker 3: Anyway, so.
[3:35] Speaker 6: As I said, I sold the guns, one, to pay
[3:39] Speaker 6: for classes at Range Ready. And the first class I
[3:44] Speaker 6: really wanted was the semi-auto pistol operator course. I've taken
[3:49] Speaker 6: the DPI, I've taken the hands-to-guns, and I took the
[3:54] Speaker 6: carbine and pistol class first. And I just need to
[3:59] Speaker 6: practice with my pistol. And that's why Chris doesn't want
[4:03] Speaker 6: to see me. But anyway, I have been practicing. So,
[4:09] Speaker 6: you know, I've been doing my homework.
[4:12] Speaker 5: There you go.
[4:12] Speaker 3: Okay.
[4:13] Speaker 6: So anyway, and I saw the Colt M5 Experience.
[4:26] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[4:27] Speaker 6: And I'm going, I've got some room in my gun
[4:30] Speaker 6: room now.
[4:32] Speaker 3: Oh, so you could take the class and keep the
[4:35] Speaker 3: M5 rifle. Yeah.
[4:37] Speaker 5: Brilliant.
[4:37] Speaker 6: And so I said, okay. So I'm taking the Sappo.
[4:40] Speaker 6: It's a coat M5. I'll just run over and visit
[4:44] Speaker 6: my brother in Houston, you know, between the two.
[4:46] Speaker 2: And....
[4:49] Speaker 6: Dury's is in San Antonio. That's three hours away. So
[4:54] Speaker 6: maybe I can swing over.
[4:56] Speaker 4: We'll see what happens.
[4:59] Speaker 3: You're making a gun talk class pilgrimage is what you're doing.
[5:04] Speaker 6: That's right. So anyway, I'm sitting there working out the details.
[5:09] Speaker 6: I'm getting the hotel room, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
[5:11] Speaker 6: And I go on to the gun talk site. And
[5:15] Speaker 6: gosh darn it. They had the HK SP5 experience.
[5:22] Speaker 4: Oh, no.
[5:23] Speaker 5: God, I hate when that happens.
[5:25] Speaker 3: I love HKs.
[5:25] Speaker 6: Oh.
[5:26] Speaker 2: So.
[5:30] Speaker 3: Well, the question is, were you able to get in?
[5:33] Speaker 6: All the money that Darius gave me is basically paying
[5:37] Speaker 6: for those three classes and the hotel.
[5:39] Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.
[5:41] Speaker 4: And Chris and Ryan, thank you.
[5:42] Speaker 6: You know, and that's good. But like I said, I've
[5:47] Speaker 6: been to Range Ready several times. An exceptional organization. Chris
[5:53] Speaker 6: is an exceptional teacher. And everyone down there from Hannah to...
[6:01] Speaker 6: Ryan to everyone is just stellar at what they do.
[6:06] Speaker 6: So I cannot give enough praises. Not a big Jamboree guy, but,
[6:11] Speaker 6: you know, that's fine too.
[6:16] Speaker 3: All right, so you know, we should tell people, when
[6:19] Speaker 3: you take your clash with the HKs, you're going to
[6:25] Speaker 3: get to shoot full auto MP5s. That's right.
[6:29] Speaker 6: I mean, I was in the Army, so I fired
[6:33] Speaker 6: full auto and, you know, had a chance to fire
[6:36] Speaker 6: some MP5s that some associates had at some range days
[6:41] Speaker 6: and whatnot. But, you know, there's a big difference between
[6:44] Speaker 6: that and that class. But all this leads up to
[6:47] Speaker 6: the question I want to ask. I'm at Swarton's Warehouse
[6:54] Speaker 6: looking for a holster for... First of all, I want
[6:57] Speaker 6: to take to the SAPO class, and I go in
[7:02] Speaker 6: and I ask, just on a whim, not expecting anything,
[7:07] Speaker 6: I say, do you have any left-handed bolt guns? And,
[7:13] Speaker 6: of course, I'm left-handed and left-eyed dominant, so, you know,
[7:17] Speaker 6: I'm normal. So I go in, and he pulls out
[7:24] Speaker 6: this Savage. I'm not really a big Savage guy, but okay.
[7:29] Speaker 6: Then he pulls out a Ruger American Gen 2 that
[7:36] Speaker 6: takes 300 blackouts, In AR mags.
[7:41] Speaker 2: Oh.
[7:42] Speaker 3: Yep. Yep.
[7:44] Speaker 6: And, you know, I said, well, I didn't get the
[7:48] Speaker 6: GT30 because they didn't make it in left-handed. Right. And
[7:52] Speaker 6: I'm going, this is about the closest thing I'm ever
[7:56] Speaker 6: going to get. It's in a caliber I don't have.
[8:00] Speaker 6: And with the new suppressor laws being what they are,
[8:03] Speaker 6: this might make a pretty good hog gun. Yep.
[8:08] Speaker 3: And you left out the most important phrase, might as well.
[8:12] Speaker 6: Yep, I might as well. I did a lot of that.
[8:15] Speaker 6: I might as well go to the Code M5. I
[8:18] Speaker 6: might as well pay for Sappo. I might as well
[8:20] Speaker 6: get a new HK. I might as well give all
[8:22] Speaker 6: my money to Ryan and everyone down there at Range Ready.
[8:27] Speaker 3: Man, you're our kind of guy.
[8:30] Speaker 4: There's a ratio here. He sold 30 and he's taking on, what, three,
[8:33] Speaker 4: maybe four guns now?
[8:35] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[8:36] Speaker 2: Well, and you know, Howard, for $ 800, we'll send you
[8:39] Speaker 2: a GT31 logo to stick on your rifle.
[8:42] Speaker 5: What do you think? There you go.
[8:45] Speaker 6: Here's my question. I went to take the Ruger American
[8:51] Speaker 6: out to zero it. Went to the range, got it
[8:54] Speaker 6: out to 50 yards. After doing some research, they said, okay,
[8:57] Speaker 6: that's a good range to zero that at, at 50 yards.
[9:01] Speaker 6: So taking supersonic ammunition, because the scope I pulled it
[9:06] Speaker 6: off of was a.
[9:09] Speaker 6: Shot 7.62x39, so I figured, okay, the ballistics of the
[9:13] Speaker 6: two are probably going to be reasonably close. I should
[9:16] Speaker 6: be on paper. I know it's a different gun, but
[9:20] Speaker 6: it should at least be on paper. So I was
[9:24] Speaker 6: on paper, and I got it zeroed in with the
[9:28] Speaker 6: supersonic 150-grain American Eagle. So I'm doing good and said, okay,
[9:35] Speaker 6: let's see what the drop is for the subsonic. And
[9:40] Speaker 6: so here's the question. Is a 10-inch drop normal? That's
[9:46] Speaker 6: about what it was.
[9:48] Speaker 3: It's not a drop. Let's make sure we're talking about
[9:51] Speaker 3: the same thing. It's not dropping that much at 50 yards.
[9:55] Speaker 3: It's just hitting there. It's shooting to a different point
[9:59] Speaker 3: of impact.
[10:00] Speaker 6: I understand that. Okay. Is the point of impact going
[10:04] Speaker 6: to shift by 10 inches between the supersonic and the
[10:08] Speaker 6: subsonic at 50 yards? Sure. Because I don't have any
[10:11] Speaker 6: experience with 300 blackout.
[10:13] Speaker 3: Well, it could with anything. Yeah, but yeah, not just blackout,
[10:17] Speaker 3: but it's a different load, it's a different weight bullet,
[10:21] Speaker 3: it's a different velocity, and yes, absolutely. And it's just
[10:25] Speaker 3: what it is. So you have to have two different
[10:28] Speaker 3: sight settings or whatever you're going to do for two
[10:30] Speaker 3: different loads.
[10:31] Speaker 5: Boy, that SIG scope would come in handy there, no, Tom?
[10:36] Speaker 6: I expected the point of impact to shift downward some.
[10:44] Speaker 6: I just did not expect it to shift 10 inches. So,
[10:48] Speaker 6: you know, maybe that's normal. But like I said, I
[10:51] Speaker 6: don't have a lot of experience with 300 blackout.
[10:55] Speaker 3: Well, obviously, it's why we slide in with a particular load.
[10:58] Speaker 3: In your case, part of it can be dropped, but
[11:00] Speaker 3: part of it is just going to be the different harmonics,
[11:03] Speaker 3: and you're using a heavier bullet that's going slower, and
[11:05] Speaker 3: that's just where it shoots. Now, here's a question for you.
[11:09] Speaker 3: How was the accuracy? Because generally, those rifles are pretty accurate.
[11:15] Speaker 6: When I did everything right, I was right on my
[11:21] Speaker 6: point of aim.
[11:23] Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
[11:24] Speaker 6: I mean, I hit the X every time I did
[11:29] Speaker 6: everything right. The times that I didn't do everything right,
[11:33] Speaker 6: I shot precision-wise probably a two-inch group, maybe, at 50 yards,
[11:43] Speaker 6: which I know isn't stellar, but... You know, new rifle
[11:47] Speaker 6: and whatnot, you know, I can chalk it up to just,
[11:51] Speaker 6: you know, getting used to the rifle.
[11:55] Speaker 3: Yeah, and you're kind of in my situation. What I'm
[11:57] Speaker 3: looking for is a rifle that shoots well even when
[12:00] Speaker 3: I do everything wrong.
[12:02] Speaker 5: Self-correcting.
[12:03] Speaker 4: You want repeatable errors.
[12:05] Speaker 3: Yes, yeah. It cancels out my errors. Yes, I like
[12:08] Speaker 3: that idea. I'm still shopping for that.
[12:11] Speaker 4: Good luck.
[12:12] Speaker 5: Yeah, really.
[12:13] Speaker 3: Hey, Howard, thank you. Look, I appreciate it. Great report.
[12:17] Speaker 3: Congratulations on clearing out the room in your gun room
[12:22] Speaker 3: so you can put more guns in there, which is
[12:24] Speaker 3: kind of how it always ends up happening. Anyway, have
[12:27] Speaker 3: a safe trip down to Range Ready. You're going to
[12:29] Speaker 3: have a wonderful time. You just lined up three, count them,
[12:32] Speaker 3: three different classes. The SAPO class he was talking about
[12:35] Speaker 3: is the single action.
[12:38] Speaker 5: Single action.
[12:38] Speaker 3: Semi-auto pistol operator. Semi-auto pistol operator, SAPO.
[12:42] Speaker 5: Okay.
[12:43] Speaker 3: So he's taking three different classes. Thank you, Howard. Appreciate that.
[12:46] Speaker 3: What a fun deal, huh? That's like a gun safari.
[12:49] Speaker 2: He's going on.
[12:49] Speaker 1: Right?
[12:50] Speaker 4: Get some family time in and, yeah, go visit the
[12:52] Speaker 4: sights around.
[12:53] Speaker 3: Awesome. He has, you know, he thinks he's spent a
[12:56] Speaker 3: lot of money. Wait till he walks into Dury's.
[12:58] Speaker 4: Right. If he goes out there, he's in trouble.
[13:02] Speaker 3: Because they got some nice stuff, man.
[13:04] Speaker 2: You know, he was talking about, oh, he wished he
[13:06] Speaker 2: would have got more, but he understands they need to
[13:09] Speaker 2: make money. That's a business's number one obligation to stay
[13:12] Speaker 2: in business, right?
[13:14] Speaker 3: Right.
[13:14] Speaker 2: But some of that money goes back to their guarantee,
[13:17] Speaker 2: which is tremendous. You buy a used gun and it's
[13:19] Speaker 2: guaranteed for life?
[13:20] Speaker 3: You've got to be kidding me.
[13:21] Speaker 5: Guaranteed for life.
[13:22] Speaker 4: Not only that, but they go through the time and
[13:25] Speaker 4: effort of shipping you boxes to send the guns out.
[13:28] Speaker 4: I mean, it's a big process.
[13:29] Speaker 5: And maintaining guns on site and stuff. Yeah, they have
[13:32] Speaker 5: to make a margin.
[13:34] Speaker 3: Okay, so imagine this. This is not at all impossible.
[13:39] Speaker 3: In fact, this might even be likely. Howard goes to Dury's.
[13:44] Speaker 3: Mine's a really cool used gun.
[13:45] Speaker 4: And it's his own.
[13:47] Speaker 3: Yes, yes. Did you realize it's his own gun?
[13:51] Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh, yeah. You're like, oh, my goodness. I
[13:55] Speaker 4: always wanted one of these.
[13:57] Speaker 5: I feel like I've had one.
[13:58] Speaker 3: You know, years ago, I used to have a gun
[14:00] Speaker 3: like that.
[14:01] Speaker 4: I picked it up, and it just felt like home.
[14:02] Speaker 4: That's right.
[14:03] Speaker 3: You know, I really missed it because it feels like
[14:06] Speaker 3: I had it, but I never shot it or anything
[14:08] Speaker 3: like that. That could absolutely happen.
[14:11] Speaker 4: This looks and feels so familiar.
[14:13] Speaker 5: I'd get a knock on the door.
[14:14] Speaker 2: Hey, remember that rifle I gave you 20 years ago
[14:16] Speaker 2: you never paid me for it?
[14:18] Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, I forgot about that. It wasn't really totally mine,
[14:22] Speaker 5: was it?
[14:23] Speaker 3: You'll have fun. And they actually, Dury's now has two
[14:26] Speaker 3: locations in San Antonio. So you can go to both
[14:29] Speaker 3: of them and see what kind of stock they've got there.
[14:30] Speaker 5: Good for them, man.
[14:32] Speaker 3: Dury's rocks. Fun stuff, yeah. Hey, let's take our break
[14:35] Speaker 3: now because we've had that long story that took us
[14:38] Speaker 3: to finally the question, and we got there. And we'll
[14:43] Speaker 3: come back in just a minute.
[14:44] Speaker 5: And Will Howard will be filling out a Gun Talk W-2.
[14:52] Speaker 7: From the range to the field, CZ firearms are built
[14:55] Speaker 7: to perform when it counts. Known for accuracy, durability, and reliability,
[15:00] Speaker 7: CZ stands apart. who demand more. CZFirearms.com.
[15:13] Speaker 3: Okay, so meanwhile, Howard is still driving over to Louisiana,
[15:18] Speaker 3: and I hope he can get our U-Haul trailer, because
[15:23] Speaker 3: once he gets down there, he's going, now look, how
[15:25] Speaker 3: can anybody not like Jamal?
[15:27] Speaker 4: I was just going to say, I hope they make
[15:28] Speaker 4: different meal accommodations for him.
[15:32] Speaker 3: We're getting some Chick-fil-A or something. I mean, come on,
[15:37] Speaker 3: we're giving you good Louisiana food there. So there you go.
[15:40] Speaker 2: Heck yeah, you guys had ribs the time I was
[15:42] Speaker 2: there and they were wonderful. It's like five minutes from
[15:44] Speaker 2: the studio.
[15:45] Speaker 3: We always eat well down there. It's just like, well,
[15:49] Speaker 3: it's Louisiana, you're going to eat well.
[15:51] Speaker 4: That's all part of it. It's all part of the experience, right?
[15:55] Speaker 3: I just think it's interesting how many people we hear
[15:59] Speaker 3: from who go take a class down there And then
[16:03] Speaker 3: immediately sign up for another class.
[16:06] Speaker 4: Addicts.
[16:08] Speaker 3: They're getting something out of it. It's not just good training.
[16:12] Speaker 3: It's a really fun experience.
[16:15] Speaker 2: Plus, if you don't, Serino's standing right there. He's going
[16:18] Speaker 2: to threaten you if you don't sign.
[16:19] Speaker 5: Up for another course. Oh, my goodness. It's kind of
[16:20] Speaker 5: mandatory on the way out.
[16:22] Speaker 3: He's such a pussycat. He looks like this big, tough guy,
[16:26] Speaker 3: and he's just a big marshmallow, really.
[16:28] Speaker 4: But, you know, it's the same type of thing. People
[16:31] Speaker 4: who run marathons, like, oh, my goodness, I'll be glad
[16:34] Speaker 4: if I make it through, you know. And by the
[16:37] Speaker 4: grace of God that I made it, okay, yeah, I'll
[16:38] Speaker 4: do another one.
[16:39] Speaker 3: At the end of it, they're still out of breath
[16:42] Speaker 3: and they're signing up for the next one.
[16:43] Speaker 4: Yeah, their legs haven't recovered. They haven't caught their breath. But, yeah,
[16:46] Speaker 4: I'll do another one.
[16:48] Speaker 3: I think recovered is a good word. These are recovering,
[16:52] Speaker 3: constantly recovering gun geeks.
[16:54] Speaker 5: Oh, my God. So what's your idea? I'm a recovering shooter.
[16:59] Speaker 3: That's right. That's right. Well, at least you're not an attorney. Okay.
[17:02] Speaker 3: This is good.
[17:04] Speaker 5: There's a lower rung.
[17:06] Speaker 3: That's right, that's right. So we're talking BB guns. They're firearms.
[17:12] Speaker 3: The idea, well, the idea behind it clearly is to
[17:15] Speaker 3: be able to regulate them to make it more difficult.
[17:19] Speaker 3: To buy BB guns.
[17:21] Speaker 4: Well, and not only that, but my intake on that
[17:24] Speaker 4: or my input on that would be like, okay, so
[17:28] Speaker 4: as a child, you give a child a BB gun,
[17:30] Speaker 4: they get an interest in it, they start growing in it,
[17:33] Speaker 4: you get a. 22, you get more rifles, they become
[17:36] Speaker 4: one of those gun owners. So if you stop it
[17:41] Speaker 4: now and regulate it now, well, they got more control,
[17:44] Speaker 4: don't they?
[17:46] Speaker 3: And if they... Make BB guns regulated like firearms, then
[17:52] Speaker 3: all of the age restrictions kick in.
[17:54] Speaker 4: Yeah, it's just.
[17:56] Speaker 3: Yeah, the whole idea is to get rid of gun ownership, period.
[18:01] Speaker 5: Yeah, they won't say that.
[18:02] Speaker 2: They'll say, no, I mean, kids can still, you know,
[18:04] Speaker 2: fantasize on Xbox and stuff.
[18:06] Speaker 5: It just won't be tangible. Guns they can touch.
[18:09] Speaker 1: Right.
[18:10] Speaker 2: Morons.
[18:10] Speaker 3: Morons. I know. There you go.
[18:13] Speaker 4: Not to mention, have you thought about this, Tom? You
[18:16] Speaker 4: and Jim would have like class three BB guns.
[18:20] Speaker 3: Oh, we would. We've got full auto BB guns.
[18:23] Speaker 5: Don't mess with us.
[18:24] Speaker 3: Which, by the way, are both the most fun and
[18:27] Speaker 3: stupidest purchases. Do you know how long it takes to
[18:32] Speaker 3: go through 25 rounds of BBs with this thing? About
[18:35] Speaker 3: one second. Yeah. It is just burp, done.
[18:40] Speaker 5: But when you got it, how many buddies came over and, hey,
[18:41] Speaker 5: want to shoot some full auto? Well, yeah.
[18:44] Speaker 3: Everybody wants to shoot it.
[18:45] Speaker 5: Right.
[18:46] Speaker 4: Hey, I've got a full auto rifle. Air quotes on rifle.
[18:50] Speaker 3: Yeah, it is the perfect party favor entertainment deal. You
[18:55] Speaker 3: just put it out there with any kind of target
[18:58] Speaker 3: you want. I mean, it could be Dixie Cups or whatever. Yep.
[19:00] Speaker 3: And just let them mow them down. The only thing is,
[19:03] Speaker 3: they have to load it because that's a lot of
[19:05] Speaker 3: loading of BBs.
[19:05] Speaker 5: Right, for the next guy or whatever. Yeah, right. Right.
[19:08] Speaker 5: And the mags, the mags, I think were like 60
[19:10] Speaker 5: bucks a pop.
[19:11] Speaker 3: Yeah, they are. It's like, okay, fine. Well, but we
[19:15] Speaker 3: got them for half price, so we're okay there.
[19:17] Speaker 5: Right. Justification time. I love it.
[19:19] Speaker 3: A little rationalization. I can do this. Yeah, we can. Look,
[19:23] Speaker 3: if you can't rationalize, you can't buy these guns.
[19:25] Speaker 5: It's as simple as that. Oh, and that's blasphemy right there.
[19:29] Speaker 4: I had BBs, so why not?
[19:31] Speaker 3: Oh, I like that. You know, down in the South,
[19:34] Speaker 3: we had a term for that. It's like if you
[19:37] Speaker 3: had mashed potatoes and didn't have enough gravy, you had
[19:39] Speaker 3: to go back for gravy. We called it evening up.
[19:42] Speaker 5: Yep.
[19:43] Speaker 3: I got BBs here. I got to even up. I
[19:45] Speaker 3: got to get another gun to shoot BBs. There you go.
[19:48] Speaker 2: And back in the day, I can only remember the
[19:49] Speaker 2: brass BBs. Now you've got black and platinum and titanium
[19:52] Speaker 2: and all kinds of different.
[19:53] Speaker 5: Is that right?
[19:54] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
[19:54] Speaker 5: They're not just the brass ones anymore.
[19:56] Speaker 3: Oh, jeez. I don't know.
[20:00] Speaker 5: I got tactical BBs.
[20:01] Speaker 4: Tactical BBs.
[20:03] Speaker 5: Tactical BBs.
[20:05] Speaker 3: So, I... Thinking about my rifles, my hunting rifles, that. 338. 6,
[20:12] Speaker 3: wooden chamber, some of the rounds. I've got to find
[20:15] Speaker 3: out what's going on, if it's an issue or if
[20:18] Speaker 3: it's just an operator issue that I'm making bad ammo
[20:21] Speaker 3: in my reloads. So there's that. It's always something, right?
[20:27] Speaker 4: Did you go and practice with it after you made
[20:29] Speaker 4: your ammo?
[20:31] Speaker 3: I did. I shot at some, but I did not.
[20:33] Speaker 3: And here's the one thing I should have done. I
[20:35] Speaker 3: didn't go through every round and cycle every round through
[20:38] Speaker 3: the gun. And for hunting, you really need to do that.
[20:42] Speaker 4: And by that, you just mean putting in the gun,
[20:44] Speaker 4: closing the bolt, opening the bolt, just so everybody's clear.
[20:48] Speaker 5: Of all the ammo you could potentially be using. Yeah.
[20:51] Speaker 3: And so, because what was happening was I would put
[20:53] Speaker 3: a round in and push the bolt forward and it
[20:56] Speaker 3: wouldn't cam down. And fortunately, I kind of felt what
[21:01] Speaker 3: was going on because if you start to cam it down,
[21:04] Speaker 3: you can get everything jammed up to the point where
[21:06] Speaker 3: you can't get anything out of the gun. At least
[21:09] Speaker 3: not out in the hunting field. I also had an
[21:14] Speaker 3: interesting thing. I had marked, because he's. 338- 06, this ammo
[21:19] Speaker 3: is made out of. 30- 06 brass. You neck it up to. 338.
[21:22] Speaker 3: I had this thought. I went, hmm. Those are going
[21:27] Speaker 3: to look alike to the.
[21:29] Speaker 6: 30- 06.
[21:29] Speaker 3: So I bought a small bottle of red fingernail polish, which,
[21:34] Speaker 3: by the way, looks fabulous on me. I just want
[21:36] Speaker 3: to tell you.
[21:37] Speaker 5: Clashes with your heels a little, but that's all right.
[21:39] Speaker 3: That's okay. But I painted the back ends of the.
[21:43] Speaker 3: 30- 06 ammo with this red fingernail polish. And at one point,
[21:49] Speaker 3: I pulled a round out of my pocket and started
[21:51] Speaker 3: to put in the. 30- 06 and went, whoop, whoop, whoop. Yep,
[21:55] Speaker 3: saw the red on the back of it and went, oh,
[21:57] Speaker 3: that paid off, okay.
[21:59] Speaker 5: Would it even fit up in there, being that it's
[22:01] Speaker 5: necked out?
[22:03] Speaker 3: More than likely not, but if you were in a
[22:05] Speaker 3: hurry and really jammed it in there, once again, you
[22:08] Speaker 3: could jam your rifle.
[22:09] Speaker 4: So here's a, from a hunting instructor manual.
[22:16] Speaker 3: Yes.
[22:16] Speaker 4: Tom, why aren't you clearing your pockets of the unused
[22:20] Speaker 4: ammunition before you take your new ammunition out?
[22:23] Speaker 5: Right. Advantage Cleland.
[22:27] Speaker 3: Well, we filed that one under I'm a doofus.
[22:36] Speaker 4: That is just, that's one of the things that we
[22:38] Speaker 4: talk about all the time, but, and more so for
[22:41] Speaker 4: parents than for kids, right? Because you're out there hunting
[22:46] Speaker 4: with maybe a 12 gauge and they've got a 20
[22:48] Speaker 4: gauge and Yep.
[22:51] Speaker 3: That's the famous bad combination right there.
[22:53] Speaker 4: Absolutely, because one will go inside the other.
[22:57] Speaker 3: Well, explain what's so dangerous about that.
[23:00] Speaker 4: Well, because it can cycle up onto the inside. The
[23:04] Speaker 4: gun doesn't actually go off. You put a shell behind it,
[23:06] Speaker 4: and now you're actually sending two rounds of ammunition through
[23:09] Speaker 4: the shotgun.
[23:10] Speaker 3: Because your 20-gauge round, your 20-gauge shell, will actually go
[23:14] Speaker 3: into the barrel of a 12-gauge and plug the barrel.
[23:18] Speaker 6: Yep.
[23:19] Speaker 3: And you thought, oh, I just forgot to put one in.
[23:22] Speaker 4: And honestly, it's kind of like a Looney Tunes, Elmer
[23:26] Speaker 4: Fudd situation, right? Because that barrel will split. I actually have,
[23:30] Speaker 4: and it's actually a learning tool. Don't pass it around
[23:33] Speaker 4: in the class that I give because you'll cut yourself.
[23:36] Speaker 4: But I do actually have a barrel that's been splayed
[23:39] Speaker 4: like that because.
[23:40] Speaker 3: It looks just like an Elmer Fudd cartoon barrel.
[23:43] Speaker 5: Yes, it does. Roll back like a tuna can, can't it?
[23:45] Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
[23:47] Speaker 4: And it'll cut you.
[23:48] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[23:49] Speaker 3: And you're lucky if it doesn't hurt you when it
[23:51] Speaker 3: goes off.
[23:52] Speaker 5: Exactly.
[23:52] Speaker 4: That's why I said we're lucky enough this person made
[23:56] Speaker 4: it through bringing in the gun and saying, I need
[23:58] Speaker 4: some help.
[24:00] Speaker 5: It's hard fitting.
[24:02] Speaker 3: Hand it to the gunsmith and say, you can fix this, right? Right.
[24:06] Speaker 4: But yeah, that happens. There's lots of calibers that are
[24:09] Speaker 4: like that. So yeah, one shell fits inside the other,
[24:12] Speaker 4: doesn't go off. You're not paying attention.
[24:14] Speaker 5: So what's the chief complaint with this gun?
[24:16] Speaker 2: Well, it doesn't fit in the scabbard very well.
[24:19] Speaker 4: Well, of course, the other thing, you know, We don't
[24:22] Speaker 4: think of it all the time, but just snow and
[24:25] Speaker 4: mud and leaves and, you know, you set something down and, yeah,
[24:29] Speaker 4: there you go. You got a clog on the end
[24:32] Speaker 4: of the barrel and not paying attention.
[24:33] Speaker 5: Do they make rubber plugs that go in your gun
[24:36] Speaker 5: when you're hunting in your field?
[24:37] Speaker 3: Well, you don't want a plug, but what I often
[24:39] Speaker 3: do is take an electrician's tape and put it over
[24:41] Speaker 3: the muzzle.
[24:42] Speaker 5: Shoot right through it?
[24:43] Speaker 3: Yeah, just shoot right through it. It doesn't affect anything
[24:45] Speaker 3: that way.
[24:46] Speaker 5: Ah, brilliant.
[24:47] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. But it keeps the mud and the snow
[24:51] Speaker 3: and anything else out of rain, anything else.
[24:53] Speaker 2: So you could buy a couple million rolls of electrical
[24:55] Speaker 2: tape and market a gun talk muzzle cleaner protector.
[25:00] Speaker 3: I could because I have not explored all the ways
[25:03] Speaker 3: that I can lose money. Most of them I have.
[25:05] Speaker 3: This is one I haven't done yet.
[25:07] Speaker 4: Jim's going to help you out.
[25:09] Speaker 5: Stick with me.
[25:11] Speaker 2: I'll show you how to turn $ 10 million into $ 2
[25:13] Speaker 2: million overnight.
[25:15] Speaker 5: There you go.
[25:16] Speaker 3: That's what we always say. You know how to make
[25:18] Speaker 3: a small fortune in aviation. Start with a big fortune.
[25:21] Speaker 5: Boating.
[25:22] Speaker 3: And know when to quit, right?
[25:23] Speaker 5: Right.
[25:24] Speaker 4: Like, okay, we're down to two. That's my low number.
[25:27] Speaker 3: That's right. That's right. Yeah, but you can. Yeah, I know.
[25:31] Speaker 3: I've done that other thing.
[25:32] Speaker 4: A couple more months.
[25:35] Speaker 3: Oh, hello, bank. Here are the keys to my house.
[25:37] Speaker 5: Right.
[25:38] Speaker 4: Well, of course, you have to have the tape logoed.
[25:40] Speaker 3: Of course.
[25:40] Speaker 4: Yeah, it's got to be nice. Well, good. But that
[25:44] Speaker 4: way I get.
[25:45] Speaker 3: To spend a little bit more money on the front end.
[25:48] Speaker 5: Sure.
[25:49] Speaker 3: Get that out of the way.
[25:50] Speaker 2: Well, you could have gone to like the Dymo label
[25:52] Speaker 2: maker and put your logo on there and you'd have
[25:54] Speaker 2: to call. Cost per unit would be outrageous. I like
[25:58] Speaker 2: the logoed electrical tape, pre-printed.
[26:01] Speaker 3: I think we have touched on this before. They actually
[26:03] Speaker 3: do make a product for doing exactly that over the muzzle.
[26:08] Speaker 3: They call them finger cots for medical use. They look
[26:13] Speaker 3: like little condoms, actually. And you slide it over the top.
[26:16] Speaker 3: But I've always thought, you know, electrical tape is easy.
[26:19] Speaker 3: I can get that and I just do that. It
[26:22] Speaker 3: doesn't look as cool. But then again, I'm out in
[26:25] Speaker 3: the middle of nowhere.
[26:26] Speaker 5: Why worry?
[26:27] Speaker 4: Nobody's looking at you.
[26:28] Speaker 2: Somebody looks at your wall and says, what's that circle?
[26:31] Speaker 2: You got electrical tape in there? Yeah, it's gun talk,
[26:34] Speaker 2: electrical tape.
[26:35] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
[26:35] Speaker 5: Muzzle caps.
[26:36] Speaker 3: There you go.
[26:36] Speaker 5: Muzzle caps.
[26:38] Speaker 4: It's my muzzle tape.
[26:41] Speaker 3: I tell you, muzzle tape is not a bad idea.
[26:43] Speaker 3: It really isn't.
[26:44] Speaker 4: Here we go.
[26:45] Speaker 3: You just throw a roll of that black electrical tape
[26:48] Speaker 3: into your hunting bag, and you've always got it. Because
[26:51] Speaker 3: you'll forget, and you get out there and go, oh, man,
[26:53] Speaker 3: I wish I had that. No, oh, I think I
[26:55] Speaker 3: still got a roll of that in there.
[26:56] Speaker 4: Well, it's kind of the same thing if anybody out
[26:59] Speaker 4: there is a, Archery season person, and they go out
[27:02] Speaker 4: in a blind, and they take a crossbow, and they
[27:04] Speaker 4: don't pay attention, and they end up shooting a hole
[27:07] Speaker 4: through the crossbow because they didn't actually get the crossbow
[27:11] Speaker 4: up all the way through the window hole in the blind.
[27:14] Speaker 5: Oh, yeah. Oh, no.
[27:16] Speaker 4: I know people that it happens to.
[27:17] Speaker 5: You've heard stories.
[27:19] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[27:19] Speaker 4: I didn't do it, but.
[27:22] Speaker 3: Now, did they shoot a hole in their blind?
[27:24] Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
[27:25] Speaker 3: Oh, boy.
[27:26] Speaker 2: Yep.
[27:27] Speaker 3: That would be exciting.
[27:28] Speaker 4: Makes a nice, nice, nice cut right through the blind.
[27:32] Speaker 3: I'm sure it does.
[27:33] Speaker 5: You're just testing your broadheads. That's what I tell people.
[27:35] Speaker 4: Testing them.
[27:36] Speaker 5: It's a broadhead testing sheet.
[27:37] Speaker 3: Okay.
[27:38] Speaker 4: I didn't tell them it was you.
[27:42] Speaker 3: Speaking of bow hunting, this brand new range finder from SIG,
[27:46] Speaker 3: we looked it up. It's teeny tiny little thing. And
[27:50] Speaker 3: that would be perfect for bow hunting. Yeah.
[27:52] Speaker 4: Well, you know, as we care more and more about
[27:56] Speaker 4: how much weight is on us as hunters carrying all
[27:59] Speaker 4: this material and product through the field, right?
[28:02] Speaker 5: I thought you were going to say eat another pizza.
[28:05] Speaker 3: No, no, no.
[28:05] Speaker 4: You mean equipment weight. Everything in ounces takes its toll.
[28:11] Speaker 4: So if you can, you know, get something smaller, it
[28:14] Speaker 4: does the same job. And you said it was 1,000 yard.
[28:16] Speaker 4: It's perfect.
[28:18] Speaker 3: 1,000 yards, yeah.
[28:18] Speaker 5: $ 250.
[28:18] Speaker 3: Perfect.
[28:19] Speaker 5: It's not a big deal.
[28:20] Speaker 3: Yeah, $ 250, and it's really small. So, yeah, I like
[28:24] Speaker 3: the sound of that. You talk about, because I'm silly,
[28:29] Speaker 3: on Facebook I put out a, I took a picture
[28:32] Speaker 3: of the thermometer on our back porch this morning. It
[28:36] Speaker 3: was reading 36.
[28:37] Speaker 5: Oh, beautiful.
[28:40] Speaker 3: So I took a picture of that, and then I
[28:42] Speaker 3: used an online font generator. to make up a ransom note.
[28:49] Speaker 3: And it said, Texas, we are holding fall. If you
[28:53] Speaker 3: want it back, send a dozen pumpkin spice donuts. The
[29:04] Speaker 3: silly stuff we do because we can, right?
[29:06] Speaker 5: Right.
[29:07] Speaker 2: Oh, Lord.
[29:09] Speaker 3: So let's see. I'm sorry, go ahead.
[29:11] Speaker 4: It's going to be a delay. They're all tied up
[29:13] Speaker 4: watching a Cowboys game right now, probably. Unless the game's over.
[29:16] Speaker 4: I don't know. I've lost track.
[29:18] Speaker 5: Michelle's idea.
[29:19] Speaker 2: I really like Michelle's idea, Tom. Get on X and
[29:22] Speaker 2: just like if we had slow call Sunday, you know,
[29:25] Speaker 2: get on X and just start talking about how football
[29:27] Speaker 2: is lame. And, you know, we want to hear your
[29:29] Speaker 2: opinion on, you know, football versus life. And then they're
[29:34] Speaker 2: actually dialing into gun talk.
[29:36] Speaker 3: That's right.
[29:36] Speaker 4: Heat meal. Heat meal.
[29:38] Speaker 3: Yeah. Why are you watching football when that should be
[29:42] Speaker 3: a shooting range?
[29:43] Speaker 5: Right?
[29:43] Speaker 2: Somebody actually asked me this. So does Michelle just, like,
[29:46] Speaker 2: screen out and just, like, put the good calls on?
[29:48] Speaker 5: I'm like, yeah. Well, what about if somebody doesn't agree?
[29:50] Speaker 5: He goes to the front of the line. No way.
[29:53] Speaker 3: If you don't agree, we want you on.
[29:55] Speaker 5: Yeah, I just think it's cool.
[29:57] Speaker 4: I'm like, woohoo, yes, we'll get you in there.
[29:59] Speaker 3: As long as you're not really a big jerk about it.
[30:04] Speaker 3: We can disagree.
[30:06] Speaker 4: Everybody has points, right? I mean, the whole... The whole
[30:10] Speaker 4: object of what we're doing with responsible gun ownership and
[30:13] Speaker 4: everything is, you know, they don't believe that we exist
[30:17] Speaker 4: and we want that, but we just don't want all
[30:19] Speaker 4: the laws prohibiting certain things because you can be responsible
[30:25] Speaker 4: without that.
[30:26] Speaker 2: We put out a lot of knowledge, a lot of information, etc.,
[30:29] Speaker 2: We learn stuff from callers, too. It's not just like
[30:31] Speaker 2: we are the authority.
[30:32] Speaker 3: Oh, right.
[30:33] Speaker 2: You know, we learn a bunch from callers and after show,
[30:36] Speaker 2: regular show, and it's a cool perspective.
[30:38] Speaker 5: For you and I, it's great because we're like truly
[30:40] Speaker 5: the middlemen.
[30:41] Speaker 3: Right.
[30:41] Speaker 2: And to be able to hear it come from all sides, well,
[30:43] Speaker 2: that makes sense. You should probably let Tom know about that, Michelle.
[30:45] Speaker 2: And I can. I'm too busy drinking and going to
[30:48] Speaker 2: crochet sites.
[30:48] Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh.
[30:49] Speaker 5: Websites and DIYs.
[30:52] Speaker 2: Okay.
[30:53] Speaker 3: So I will not use his name, but I invited
[30:55] Speaker 3: somebody to be a guest on today's show. He says,
[30:58] Speaker 3: I appreciate it. I'm honored. He says, but I'm going
[31:01] Speaker 3: to be attending the New Orleans Saints game, and I'll
[31:03] Speaker 3: probably be blind drunk. And I wrote him back. I said, well,
[31:07] Speaker 3: you don't think I do this show sober, do you?
[31:10] Speaker 4: Oh, nice, Tom.
[31:11] Speaker 5: Which you obviously do for all you folks that can't
[31:13] Speaker 5: take a damn joke. Yeah.
[31:18] Speaker 3: How do you know? You can't see me. There's no video.
[31:20] Speaker 3: People keep saying, you should do video. Heck no. Then
[31:23] Speaker 3: people can see how much I've been drinking.
[31:24] Speaker 4: Right. When Tom talks about shots, he doesn't mean with
[31:28] Speaker 4: a pistol or a rifle.
[31:31] Speaker 3: Oh, Lordy.
[31:34] Speaker 4: Maybe that's why those.
[31:37] Speaker 3: 338- 6s wouldn't work. Yeah, it could be.
[31:40] Speaker 5: Johnny Walker Red Dot. I like it. There's some cross
[31:43] Speaker 5: promotion there.
[31:45] Speaker 3: Interesting. When we would do these video shoots, we would
[31:49] Speaker 3: do the wrap, and then the standard line was, the
[31:53] Speaker 3: next shot is in a glass.
[31:55] Speaker 4: There you go.
[31:56] Speaker 5: There you go.
[31:58] Speaker 3: Oh, Lordy. All right, guys. Well, I got a little
[32:02] Speaker 3: bit of packing to do because I'm going to Gunsight
[32:05] Speaker 3: for their Gunsight alumni shoot next week. And they'll be
[32:10] Speaker 3: celebrating the 50th year of gun sight. So that should
[32:13] Speaker 3: be fun. And everybody's taking all their cool, super-duper guns
[32:18] Speaker 3: so they can be competitive. And I went, yeah, you
[32:20] Speaker 3: know what? I'm not going to be competitive anyway. So
[32:23] Speaker 3: to honor the 50 years of gun sight and Jeff Cooper,
[32:27] Speaker 3: I am taking a 5-inch. 45 ACP 1911 with iron sights.
[32:29] Speaker 3: There you go. Attaboy. Yeah, we're going to go old
[32:36] Speaker 3: school and classic. And, you know, I'm not going to
[32:39] Speaker 3: place high, but I wasn't going to place high anyways.
[32:41] Speaker 3: It didn't matter.
[32:43] Speaker 4: You never know.
[32:43] Speaker 5: And he'll probably come home with three more pistols from
[32:47] Speaker 5: the pro shop.
[32:48] Speaker 3: I love it. They have like for the top shooter
[32:51] Speaker 3: and they've got an award for the worst shooter came in.
[32:55] Speaker 3: But you know what they also have? They have an
[32:57] Speaker 3: award for the person who comes in dead in the middle.
[33:01] Speaker 5: Awesome. Really? Mr. Average.
[33:03] Speaker 3: Isn't that cool? So anybody has a shot at ranking
[33:07] Speaker 3: right in the middle.
[33:09] Speaker 5: Nice.
[33:09] Speaker 3: I like that. Yeah, it's kind of fun. Mr.
[33:12] Speaker 5: Median. I like it.
[33:13] Speaker 3: There you go. That's me. Average all the way, baby.
[33:17] Speaker 4: Slow and steady. I'll get there. Just wait.
[33:20] Speaker 5: Get there safely is what it's about.
[33:22] Speaker 3: There it is. You guys have a great week.
[33:24] Speaker 4: Take care. Travel safe. We'll catch you next time for
[33:27] Speaker 4: the Gun Talk After Show.
