-- Jack Carr's latest novel, The Fourth Option, has a new hero, and he's dishing out SEAL-level justice in the steamy quarters of New Orleans. -- Capturing family stories through the guns you pass along. -- It may seem small, but with modern TSS loads the 28-gauge shotgun works great for turkeys. [0:00] Speaker 1: The Ruger Light Rag Security three eighty is easy to

[0:07] Speaker 1: or in a purse, big enough to absorb recoil. Learn

[0:15] Speaker 2: All Right, you know, I was a writer and an
[0:18] Speaker 2: editor long long before I started doing broadcast back. So
[0:21] Speaker 2: I love the written word and particularly enjoy people who
[0:24] Speaker 2: do it well. Jack Carr is one of those people,
[0:26] Speaker 2: of course, writing starting off with the Terminal List, a
[0:29] Speaker 2: whole series of best selling novels, got a new one out,
[0:32] Speaker 2: he joins us. Right now, Jack, how are you doing? You?
[0:35] Speaker 2: Toddel at you?
[0:37] Speaker 3: Oh?
[0:37] Speaker 4: I know it.
[0:37] Speaker 3: So I went back there with the Best Defense Foundation.
[0:40] Speaker 3: I've been working with them for a few years, taking
[0:42] Speaker 3: primarily World War Two veterans back to the battlefields on
[0:44] Speaker 3: which they fought. So the Pearl Harbor and Normandy, my
[0:48] Speaker 3: daughters who got involved, our sons got involved, and this
[0:52] Speaker 3: is their first time taking Vietnam veterans back, and they
[0:55] Speaker 3: took a group of MCAVISAG veterans and invited me to
[0:58] Speaker 3: come along. So we spent the last time days in Vietnam,
[1:01] Speaker 3: and it was an extremely powerful experience. So I got
[1:05] Speaker 3: to crawl into some tunnels, So I think they those
[1:07] Speaker 3: tunnels were built for somebody a little smaller, you know
[1:09] Speaker 3: what I mean.
[1:11] Speaker 2: Well, And also it's a touchstone if you will throwback
[1:14] Speaker 2: to your last novel, cry Havoc, which is based in Vietnam.
[1:19] Speaker 3: That is right mainteen sixty eight Vietnam, when is to
[1:21] Speaker 3: take anespionage thriller and drop it into the heart of
[1:24] Speaker 3: Saigon essentially, even though there are scenes that take place
[1:27] Speaker 3: on in Washington, DC area and in Moscow, but primarily
[1:31] Speaker 3: it takes place in Saigon and then a couple parts
[1:33] Speaker 3: over the border into Laos. So it was focused on
[1:36] Speaker 3: mac Viisog. So so it made sense for me to
[1:38] Speaker 3: go along on this on this trip, and it was
[1:41] Speaker 3: such an honor to get to spend time with these
[1:42] Speaker 3: guys because of course I grew up reading about them,
[1:45] Speaker 3: And first it was just little hints in magazines like
[1:47] Speaker 3: Soldier of Fortune or maybe Gung Home magazine, something like that.
[1:50] Speaker 3: You'd see a knife that said Macfisog Tribute blade in
[1:54] Speaker 3: something like US Cavalry or Brigade Quartermaster or something. And
[1:57] Speaker 3: then more books started coming out about Macviesog, what they
[2:00] Speaker 3: did going into Laos, Cambodia, North Vietnam, and of course
[2:04] Speaker 3: they essentially created the legacy, the foundation, the reputations that
[2:09] Speaker 3: all Special Operations Forces essentially lived off of until September eleventh,
[2:13] Speaker 3: two thousand and one. So I'm always in their debt.
[2:16] Speaker 3: And these guys were amazing.
[2:19] Speaker 2: To me. It looks like, and you tell me, I mean,
[2:22] Speaker 2: obviously you got your background as a CEO, you spent
[2:25] Speaker 2: your time in the teams, but among and you stayed
[2:29] Speaker 2: up with this, you stay into the gun culture, and
[2:32] Speaker 2: among the popular writers today, I think you may be
[2:35] Speaker 2: the best informed and actually the one with the most
[2:38] Speaker 2: experienced when it comes to firearms.
[2:41] Speaker 5: Well, I appreciate that.
[2:42] Speaker 3: And things have evolved even since I was in. It
[2:45] Speaker 3: seems like yesterday, but it's really been close to ten
[2:48] Speaker 3: years now that I've been out of the military. So
[2:50] Speaker 3: I checked with people that are still in that still
[2:52] Speaker 3: have touch points with these different communities, guys that are
[2:56] Speaker 3: still active in different military units or SWAT whatever it
[3:00] Speaker 3: might be, to make sure that if one of those
[3:03] Speaker 3: guys is reading these books, that they say, ah, he
[3:06] Speaker 3: did his research. I always do that with the explosive
[3:08] Speaker 3: ordnance disposal stuff, make sure I send it out to
[3:11] Speaker 3: my EOD buddy to say, if somebody was EOD, military
[3:15] Speaker 3: or state, local, federal law enforcement, if you want to
[3:18] Speaker 3: read this, I don't want them to get pulled out
[3:20] Speaker 3: of the story because I make too atrocious of an error.
[3:23] Speaker 3: So if there's something that I don't know, usually I'm
[3:25] Speaker 3: pretty good on the firearm stuff, but I need to
[3:27] Speaker 3: need to check it these days, just because I'm a
[3:29] Speaker 3: little bit removed from it. But anything else like that
[3:32] Speaker 3: I don't really know intimately. Well, I really dive into
[3:36] Speaker 3: that research so that I don't take someone who has
[3:38] Speaker 3: lived their whole life in one of those worlds, don't
[3:41] Speaker 3: pull them out of the story.
[3:42] Speaker 2: Well, and we've all had that experience for a reading
[3:45] Speaker 2: on and then you go, ah, man, he screwed that
[3:48] Speaker 2: one up. He got that one wrong. And it does
[3:50] Speaker 2: it pulls you right out of the story.
[3:52] Speaker 3: Yeah, as soon as you hear the safety coming off
[3:55] Speaker 3: on a block, or you know they have the clips
[3:58] Speaker 3: and magazines or whatever, something that's just tactically unsound or
[4:02] Speaker 3: just you know, you can forgive a little bit here
[4:04] Speaker 3: or there, perhaps, but it also shows a little carelessness
[4:09] Speaker 3: on the part of the author because now, especially with
[4:12] Speaker 3: the Internet obviously for the past twenty five years. You've
[4:15] Speaker 3: been able to look this stuff up if you just
[4:17] Speaker 3: put in a little bit of research, or maybe you
[4:19] Speaker 3: spend a little time on the range. But for me,
[4:21] Speaker 3: it's really the feelings and emotions that came from doing
[4:24] Speaker 3: that job. So I don't have to interview someone who
[4:27] Speaker 3: was in an ambush to remember what it was like.
[4:29] Speaker 3: I just think about Bagdad two thousand and six, what
[4:31] Speaker 3: it was like to be in an ambush, and I
[4:32] Speaker 3: take those feelings and emotions and apply them to a
[4:34] Speaker 3: completely fictional narrative. So the feelings and emotions behind some
[4:38] Speaker 3: of these things come from a real place. Same thing
[4:41] Speaker 3: with a sniper weapon system. I don't have to ask
[4:43] Speaker 3: somebody what it was like to be behind the glass
[4:45] Speaker 3: or just imagine what it was like to be behind
[4:47] Speaker 3: the glass. In remodi, I can remember what it was
[4:49] Speaker 3: like to be behind the glass and then pull those
[4:51] Speaker 3: feelings and emotions out, and I think that adds a
[4:53] Speaker 3: little bit of texture to the in context to my
[4:57] Speaker 3: fictional narratives.
[4:58] Speaker 2: And of course, you got you know, not only your books,
[5:00] Speaker 2: You've got you know the film's been, the series and
[5:02] Speaker 2: everything going on. You got I guess the latest series
[5:05] Speaker 2: about to break again.
[5:07] Speaker 3: That's right. So the second book, True Believer, that's coming
[5:09] Speaker 3: to screens, I think I'm a I can say by
[5:12] Speaker 3: the end of the year. So they haven't made any
[5:14] Speaker 3: announcements of exactly when it's coming out yet, but we
[5:16] Speaker 3: finished that up twenty twenty five and it's been in
[5:20] Speaker 3: post production and we just finished up all those post
[5:22] Speaker 3: production edits and it is looking great. So those eight
[5:25] Speaker 3: episodes should drop here before the end of the year
[5:28] Speaker 3: for True Believer, and going forward, we'll see what happens.
[5:31] Speaker 3: You know, these things can go off the rails at
[5:33] Speaker 3: any given time. So I feel unfortunate that we've been
[5:35] Speaker 3: able to do what we've done on the screen thus far,
[5:38] Speaker 3: and I hope we can continue, but you never know.
[5:43] Speaker 2: And you got this latest book just out. I'm only
[5:45] Speaker 2: about halfway through, but it really speaks to me because
[5:47] Speaker 2: of course I come from Louisiana and it's spend a
[5:49] Speaker 2: good time down in New Orleans where this is taking place.
[5:52] Speaker 2: This a collaborative effort you're doing with MP Woodward. I
[5:55] Speaker 2: will tell you, and I've been telling you all along,
[5:56] Speaker 2: your books are getting better and better. This is so good.
[5:59] Speaker 2: It is as good as it gets. I mean, the
[6:02] Speaker 2: Fourth Option is a terrific book, terrific concept, and I
[6:07] Speaker 2: love we were talking about this earlier, the idea that
[6:09] Speaker 2: there's a real touch of the Paladin Old Paladin TV
[6:13] Speaker 2: series in this.
[6:14] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it's inspired by Have Gun, Will Travel, which
[6:17] Speaker 3: of course was a radio show first and then became
[6:20] Speaker 3: a television show late fifties into the sixties, and I
[6:22] Speaker 3: used to watch it with my dad drawing up. So
[6:24] Speaker 3: that was really the foundation for this novel. But there
[6:27] Speaker 3: also will be a little hints of Shane high Planes, Drifter,
[6:30] Speaker 3: Pale Rioder, Magnificent Seven for those who are into the
[6:33] Speaker 3: Western Intentually, my modern interpretation of that stranger comes to
[6:37] Speaker 3: town narrative. So in this case, instead of jumping on
[6:40] Speaker 3: his horse and riding into town, Chris Walker the protagonist
[6:43] Speaker 3: in his Belgian Malinwau Paladin, they get in the Volkswagen
[6:46] Speaker 3: bus popped off camper from the eighties and drive into
[6:49] Speaker 3: New Orleans and then start fishing out a long forgotten
[6:53] Speaker 3: brand of lethal outlaw justice. So there's and for those
[6:57] Speaker 3: as that grew up in the eighties like I did,
[6:59] Speaker 3: of course, a sprinkling of things like Legal Weapon from
[7:02] Speaker 3: fans of that movie. The first one we'll recognize some
[7:05] Speaker 3: of that, maybe a little Equalizer from the eighties in
[7:08] Speaker 3: there as well, maybe even a little a Team, a
[7:10] Speaker 3: drop of Airwolf, a little bit of Magnum. So all
[7:13] Speaker 3: those cultural touch points that became part of my experience
[7:16] Speaker 3: during my formative years, of course, are now part of
[7:20] Speaker 3: my foundation, and we'll find their way into my novels.
[7:24] Speaker 3: But this one is domestic in nature and focuses on
[7:29] Speaker 3: something happening in New Orleans with the drug trade, and
[7:32] Speaker 3: it's very personal to this protagonist who shows up there
[7:35] Speaker 3: and starts to investigation.
[7:37] Speaker 2: It's not a James Rees novel.
[7:41] Speaker 3: That's right, that's right. I really wanted to differentiate this
[7:43] Speaker 3: from the James Reach Terminalist series, which are more geopolitical,
[7:46] Speaker 3: global in nature, save the world type storylines, and this one.
[7:51] Speaker 3: I wanted this to be more intimate, domestic. I want
[7:55] Speaker 3: this protagonist to go to a new town with every
[7:57] Speaker 3: book and have that domestic USA town be the backdrop
[8:02] Speaker 3: of the story. And for me, New Orleans was the
[8:05] Speaker 3: perfect place to start. I went there a couple of
[8:07] Speaker 3: times training and the Sealed teams that really made an
[8:09] Speaker 3: impression on me, and uh, and I always knew that
[8:11] Speaker 3: I would I would set a novel there at some point,
[8:14] Speaker 3: and this fourth option was definitely the one to do
[8:17] Speaker 3: it with.
[8:18] Speaker 2: Well, you know, New Orleans is steamy, it's spicy, it's interesting,
[8:22] Speaker 2: and it's inherently corrupt. It's the perfect place for something like.
[8:25] Speaker 5: That, exactly.
[8:27] Speaker 3: It had all the elements that I was looking for.
[8:30] Speaker 3: And yeah, I couldn't be more excited with how this,
[8:32] Speaker 3: how this book turned out. And can't wait too Uh,
[8:36] Speaker 3: I shouldn't say too much, but I guess it. It
[8:38] Speaker 3: would make sense that I'm moving on to to the
[8:40] Speaker 3: next one already, so uh, can't wait to can't wait
[8:43] Speaker 3: to get you beat me out there?
[8:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, you beat me too. I was gonna say, what's
[8:47] Speaker 2: the next? All right? So what is next? Where are
[8:49] Speaker 2: you hitting? Next?
[8:50] Speaker 3: Next one is James Reese eight, going back to James Reese,
[8:53] Speaker 3: and that should sort of be a contemporary thriller. So
[8:56] Speaker 3: that'll continue that storyline. But of course I have plans
[8:59] Speaker 3: for another fourth option, another Tom Rees's novel set either
[9:02] Speaker 3: in Vietnam or right afterward. And then I have a
[9:05] Speaker 3: bunch of other projects out there that haven't been announced
[9:07] Speaker 3: yet as well. So the next targeted Actually I can
[9:10] Speaker 3: talk about that a little bit. The first one my
[9:12] Speaker 3: first nonfiction work with James Scott Fullzerprise finalist, Incredible Guy historian.
[9:17] Speaker 3: Our first one was on de Route nineteen eighty three,
[9:20] Speaker 3: and this one we'll say exactly what it's about, but
[9:22] Speaker 3: if people go into my social channels and scroll around,
[9:25] Speaker 3: they can probably figure it out because of where I've
[9:27] Speaker 3: been traveling. But that should come out in the early
[9:30] Speaker 3: part of twenty twenty seven, so we're hard at work
[9:33] Speaker 3: on that right now. The second book in the Targeted series, Well.
[9:37] Speaker 2: Jack Carl, you know what I tell people about your book.
[9:39] Speaker 2: The people who know I said, it's real simple. He
[9:41] Speaker 2: gets guns right, and you do. Not only are you
[9:43] Speaker 2: a terrific writer and author, but you get it right
[9:46] Speaker 2: and we appreciate that.
[9:48] Speaker 3: Oh, thank you. I definitely put the time, energy and
[9:51] Speaker 3: effort in as you know you bet well.
[9:54] Speaker 2: Thank you so much for your time and thanks for
[9:55] Speaker 2: your effort. I'm enjoying it. Can't wait to finish the
[9:58] Speaker 2: fourth option.

[12:58] Speaker 2: Year it did something interesting this. WEEK i was where
[13:18] Speaker 2: there was a continuation of WHAT i did a few months.
[13:19] Speaker 2: AGO i came across the old movie film that my
[13:25] Speaker 2: dad had shot back WHEN i was. YOUNG a lot
[13:29] Speaker 2: of This i've never seen. Before it's eight millimeter, film no,
[13:31] Speaker 2: sound AND i, decided, Well i've seen all these ads you,
[13:35] Speaker 2: know send in your films will digitize. It So i've
[13:38] Speaker 2: grabbed a bunch of, it do it into a box
[13:40] Speaker 2: and send it. Off and we got some of it
[13:43] Speaker 2: back in downloadable For i'm still waiting for the hard
[13:45] Speaker 2: drive to come back and the film to come back
[13:47] Speaker 2: from the. Service i'm not going to name the service
[13:49] Speaker 2: yet until i get everything back And i'm just. Satisfied
[13:52] Speaker 2: THEN i can tell YOU i like these. Guys but
[13:54] Speaker 2: in downloading some of the DIGITAL i guess it'd be
[13:57] Speaker 2: video now from the. Film it was interesting looking at
[14:01] Speaker 2: some of this. Stuff there was video of me with my,
[14:05] Speaker 2: brother he was probably, TWO i THINK i was, four maybe,
[14:10] Speaker 2: five not quite walking. Around i'm taking around for a.
[14:13] Speaker 2: Walk i'm holding his hand and in my other, Hand
[14:16] Speaker 2: i've got a. RIFLE i don't, Know i'm four or,
[14:18] Speaker 2: FIVE i don't know what it. Was it was bb,
[14:21] Speaker 2: gun toy, gun, whatever but it's, like, okay that looks about.
[14:25] Speaker 2: Right interesting. Stuff and then there was some video of
[14:31] Speaker 2: The Grand American Trap shoot back when it was In, Vandalia.
[14:35] Speaker 2: Ohio this would have been early map but probably mid.
[14:42] Speaker 2: Sixties his first, year my dad decided to shoot trap
[14:46] Speaker 2: and he and some of his buddies went to The
[14:48] Speaker 2: grand and we went as a, family AND i remember
[14:50] Speaker 2: being there as a. KID i remember one of the people,
[14:55] Speaker 2: shooting and The grand is an enormous. Event there's the
[14:59] Speaker 2: trap after trap field after trap, field just lined up
[15:02] Speaker 2: and it's a mile, long this line of trap, fields
[15:08] Speaker 2: and they have tractor pulled buggies that will take you
[15:12] Speaker 2: up and down the line you get off where your
[15:14] Speaker 2: next shoot. Is it's an amazing. Thing and now it
[15:18] Speaker 2: has been moved down To, Sparta. Illinois it's no longer In.
[15:21] Speaker 2: Vandalien But i'm looking at that and. Remembering one of
[15:25] Speaker 2: the people who were shooting at The grand that year
[15:28] Speaker 2: was the movie Star Roy. Rogers he was shooting trap
[15:34] Speaker 2: AND i remember my brother AND i were looking at
[15:36] Speaker 2: him and, thinking you, know he'd probably shoot better if
[15:39] Speaker 2: he used a six, gun so we were PROBABLY i don't,
[15:44] Speaker 2: know twelve something like. THAT i do remember that my
[15:47] Speaker 2: dad was using us as child labor loading HIS ammo
[15:50] Speaker 2: for him twelve games. AMMO i think we was an
[15:52] Speaker 2: old cch, reloader IF i remember, right using felt, wads
[15:57] Speaker 2: paper halls of. Course so that was, fun those old,
[16:00] Speaker 2: memories AND i was pulling some screenshots of those and
[16:03] Speaker 2: share them online and just some fun. Stuff look at
[16:06] Speaker 2: the old old stuff kind of reminded me that in
[16:11] Speaker 2: looking at some of the old. Guns, NOW i don't
[16:14] Speaker 2: have like antique, guns that's not my. Thing i'm not
[16:17] Speaker 2: a gun. Collector But i've got older, guns if you,
[16:20] Speaker 2: will Guns i've had a. While each of those guns carries,
[16:25] Speaker 2: memories you, know some of them not so much if
[16:27] Speaker 2: they're new or the plastic, fantastic but some of them
[16:30] Speaker 2: are older and they you, think you, KNOW i need
[16:33] Speaker 2: to share the stories, here and now it is very
[16:38] Speaker 2: easy to. Do. It used to be we'd have to
[16:41] Speaker 2: sit down and write it out by, hand and you
[16:42] Speaker 2: can type it and you can put it on your.
[16:44] Speaker 2: Computer but now it's. Easy you set up your, phone
[16:49] Speaker 2: turn it on movie or shoot video of, yourself pick
[16:53] Speaker 2: up the gun and start telling the. Story so if
[16:55] Speaker 2: you're passing along your guns to people and your, family
[17:00] Speaker 2: then you can give them this video of you telling
[17:02] Speaker 2: the story OF i use this shotgun on a duck.
[17:05] Speaker 2: Hunt that was the time we flipped the vote, over
[17:07] Speaker 2: OR i was wading out to the decoys that went
[17:09] Speaker 2: over the top of my waiters and filled with water
[17:11] Speaker 2: and they started to. Freeze and you know all those
[17:13] Speaker 2: stories that we, tell it's just. Amazing if you go
[17:17] Speaker 2: pick up an old shotgun or a rifle or a
[17:20] Speaker 2: handgun out of your, safe the memories kind of flood.
[17:25] Speaker 2: Back they come. BACK i know you've got those stories as.
[17:28] Speaker 2: Well i'd love to have you share those with. Us,
[17:30] Speaker 2: here give me a call At Tom Talk. Gun what
[17:32] Speaker 2: are those Stories when you are thinking about when this
[17:36] Speaker 2: old GUN i, remember or it's even a case of
[17:41] Speaker 2: flipping back one more, generation you, say, WELL i got
[17:44] Speaker 2: this gun from my dad or my, grandfather and here's
[17:48] Speaker 2: the story that they. Told because if you don't pass it,
[17:52] Speaker 2: along it. Dies the story dies somewhere along the, Way
[17:58] Speaker 2: and now it's so easy to make can. Happen it's,
[18:01] Speaker 2: like don't even think about putting guns in your will
[18:05] Speaker 2: or giving them to somebody without passing down the, story
[18:07] Speaker 2: because that makes the gun. Interesting it probably makes to
[18:12] Speaker 2: where they're going to keep the gun. Too just a
[18:15] Speaker 2: little side note, there but just fun STUFF i think. About,
[18:18] Speaker 2: uh my dad really he shot A model twelve pump twenty,
[18:24] Speaker 2: gage liked it a, lot but maybe even more than,
[18:28] Speaker 2: that he liked His winchester one on one over and
[18:30] Speaker 2: under three inch magnum twenty gauge shot three's magnum for
[18:35] Speaker 2: a lot of. Stuff used it for ducks back when
[18:37] Speaker 2: we could shoot the, lead but used it for. Everything and,
[18:40] Speaker 2: then of course with interchangeable, jokes why wouldn't you could
[18:43] Speaker 2: use it for doves and ducks and quail and, pheasants
[18:46] Speaker 2: and if you're a good, shot and he, was that
[18:49] Speaker 2: just became his go, everywhere do everything. Gun so The
[18:52] Speaker 2: winchester ONE o, one he loved. That and my mom
[18:55] Speaker 2: had one of those guns, Too but my mom was
[18:58] Speaker 2: like five feet tall as she lied about, it which
[19:01] Speaker 2: she really. Was and of, course and then one time
[19:04] Speaker 2: when dad was out of, town he had had the
[19:06] Speaker 2: gun the butt stock cutting down to like thirteen inches
[19:10] Speaker 2: to shorten. It she took it to. Guns we ether
[19:12] Speaker 2: had it cut down to twelve for, babies a little
[19:15] Speaker 2: bit short of, mean it was really short and NOW
[19:17] Speaker 2: i won't fit anybody, else of, course but, man she
[19:21] Speaker 2: shot that thing really. Well and AS i was growing,
[19:23] Speaker 2: UP i used one of her, shotguns another twenty Gauge
[19:28] Speaker 2: model twelve with a cut down. Stock it was great
[19:31] Speaker 2: for the kids and we still have that within the.
[19:34] Speaker 2: Family just probably need to put another recoil pad on.
[19:38] Speaker 2: It the recoil pad got really old and hard and
[19:41] Speaker 2: doesn't stick to your. Shoulder that didn't really. Compress not
[19:44] Speaker 2: that there's a lot of recoil with a twenty, gauge
[19:46] Speaker 2: but there's, some AND i bet a recoil pad would be.
[19:49] Speaker 2: Better you don't want the butt of the shotgun slipping
[19:53] Speaker 2: off your shoulder when you're. SHOOTING i was talking with
[19:57] Speaker 2: a lady who runs a gun store up in The
[19:59] Speaker 2: call last week. Sometime she's very much into clay. Targets
[20:05] Speaker 2: we don't have a clay target range anywhere near. Us
[20:07] Speaker 2: we're closest one is at least an hour, away so
[20:10] Speaker 2: we're trying to get somebody to put one in around.
[20:12] Speaker 2: Here and we were just swapping stories against save old
[20:15] Speaker 2: deal she used to work For Caesar garini and talk
[20:19] Speaker 2: about some of the different, shooters and she was explained
[20:22] Speaker 2: that there's a resort In. MONTANA i can't remember the
[20:25] Speaker 2: name of, it but they said that they're making more
[20:28] Speaker 2: money with their clay target operation than they are with
[20:31] Speaker 2: horseback riding and everything else they. DO i, thought, well
[20:34] Speaker 2: there's a story there if somebody's, thinking, well, yeah that's
[20:38] Speaker 2: a great, idea but can we make any money at? It,
[20:40] Speaker 2: yes you can if you run. It, well just all,
[20:44] Speaker 2: right let's see. HERE i don't know that we've got
[20:46] Speaker 2: time to Get rodney in right. Now let's, okay let's do.
[20:50] Speaker 2: That let's Grab rodney In, Crosby texas online To Hey,
[20:54] Speaker 2: rodney you're On Gun. Talk what's? Up?
[20:56] Speaker 6: Hey Tom? SO i was wondering what the new idea
[20:59] Speaker 6: of director come and wanting to revisit the rule on
[21:05] Speaker 6: private party. Sales what does that look like FOR ffl
[21:08] Speaker 6: dealers such as myself going? Forward is that going to eliminate?
[21:12] Speaker 6: Us how does that look? EXACTLY i wanted to get
[21:14] Speaker 6: your opinion on.
[21:14] Speaker 2: THAT i don't think, so BECAUSE ffl is that's written
[21:18] Speaker 2: into the, law that's part Of Gun Control act of
[21:20] Speaker 2: nineteen sixty, eight so LICENSED ffl, store so sales from
[21:25] Speaker 2: gun stores will. REMAIN i don't think they're going to
[21:28] Speaker 2: do away with. THAT i think what they're doing is
[21:31] Speaker 2: they change the definition of who is in the, business
[21:34] Speaker 2: because what they were doing Under biden is they, said, oh,
[21:37] Speaker 2: well if you sell a couple of guns at a gun,
[21:39] Speaker 2: show you must be in the business and you need
[21:41] Speaker 2: to have AN, ffl and we can arrest you for
[21:45] Speaker 2: selling your private guns at a gun show if you
[21:48] Speaker 2: don't have AN. Ffl that's that's the kind of nonsense
[21:51] Speaker 2: they were. Doing and if you would write, it just hold,
[21:53] Speaker 2: on we're going to hold you over this break here
[21:55] Speaker 2: Because i'm it's running up on top of me AND
[21:57] Speaker 2: i kind of took you too close to. It but,
[21:59] Speaker 2: yeah and people were, saying, yeah if you sell a
[22:01] Speaker 2: gun or, two we can arrest you for not having
[22:04] Speaker 2: a federal farmer's. License, no that's not what it's supposed to.
[22:07] Speaker 2: Be so the new director of THE atf, said, yeah
[22:10] Speaker 2: we're we're going to get away from. That that's not
[22:12] Speaker 2: What congress, wrote that's not what it. Intended we're actually
[22:15] Speaker 2: going to have rules that are the same as what
[22:18] Speaker 2: the actual law Is, steve don't go. Anywhere we're going
[22:26] Speaker 2: to get to you in just a. Minute we're talking
[22:27] Speaker 2: With rodney right now out Of, Crosby. Texas And, rodney
[22:31] Speaker 2: you were asking about what this changes AT atf and
[22:34] Speaker 2: the rules might do in terms of FFLs like. YOU
[22:37] Speaker 2: i don't think it's going to affect you much other
[22:40] Speaker 2: than making up considerably easier for you to.
[22:42] Speaker 6: Operate, WELL i sure hope. So and then SO i
[22:46] Speaker 6: guess the fear is fear of the. Unmountain and so
[22:48] Speaker 6: WHENEVER i heard, THAT i, thought oh my, goodness, now
[22:50] Speaker 6: but it's just going to open up the whole world
[22:52] Speaker 6: of you, know everybody and your brother can sell guns
[22:54] Speaker 6: now and. Anyway SO i, thought, Well i'll just call
[22:58] Speaker 6: in the gun call and say What tom?
[23:00] Speaker 2: Satismatic, well you KNOW i can always make up an, answer, right.
[23:05] Speaker 5: That's, right that's.
[23:05] Speaker 2: RIGHT i appreciate the. Car do you take? Care all?
[23:10] Speaker 2: Right let's Grab steve out Of, Fargo North. Dakota, Hey,
[23:12] Speaker 2: steve you got a range of port? Forrest what you
[23:15] Speaker 2: GOT i?
[23:17] Speaker 12: Do we were shooting a Super Black eagle three and
[23:20] Speaker 12: twenty eight gauge and when you told your story about
[23:25] Speaker 12: your mom and your dad are cutting off those guns
[23:27] Speaker 12: so that smaller statute individuals can use. Them done that
[23:31] Speaker 12: a lot with my. Sons we've got a bunch of
[23:35] Speaker 12: shotguns that are cut down to twelve thirteen. Inches game
[23:38] Speaker 12: changer for young. Shooters but the other thing THAT i
[23:41] Speaker 12: do with young shooters is the. Gauge twenty eight gauge
[23:44] Speaker 12: is so much. Fun it's so much more effective than
[23:47] Speaker 12: a four to, ten but it's just so much friendlier
[23:51] Speaker 12: from a recoil. Standpoint so this last, weekend not this,
[23:54] Speaker 12: weekend the weekend, before we're turkey hunting and the only
[23:58] Speaker 12: gun in the blind is my tag isn't any good
[24:01] Speaker 12: after the first week super Black eagle twenty eight, gage
[24:06] Speaker 12: three INCH tss seven, shots so it'll sit turkey out
[24:10] Speaker 12: to you know who knows forty plus yards for. Sure
[24:14] Speaker 12: and my youngest, son we had missed one the day
[24:18] Speaker 12: or a nice big tom came in and we're hunting
[24:21] Speaker 12: out of a. Blind so when you're in a, blind
[24:23] Speaker 12: you've got issues of which window and how do you do?
[24:26] Speaker 5: THIS i couldn't get him to commit to the.
[24:28] Speaker 12: Decoys so we ended up a bird ended up going
[24:32] Speaker 12: to our. Right so my son asked if he could
[24:34] Speaker 12: shoot left, handed AND i said. Yes he switches to left,
[24:38] Speaker 12: handed and then he asked if he could shoot AND
[24:40] Speaker 12: i said, Yes and it was a mistake because he
[24:42] Speaker 12: just couldn't handle the gun that. Way we missed and
[24:45] Speaker 12: fired On Super Black. Eagle but that's another thing to
[24:48] Speaker 12: know about inertial.
[24:49] Speaker 5: Loaders it didn't throw the.
[24:52] Speaker 12: Shell because when he, fired you, know it slipped off his.
[24:54] Speaker 12: Shoulder there was no reseptance to cycle the. Gun didn't.
[24:58] Speaker 12: Matter we wouldn't wouldn't have had another Sh but the next,
[25:01] Speaker 12: morning we're in the blind and working some what we
[25:04] Speaker 12: thought Were tom's and it's a little bit, cold and
[25:06] Speaker 12: now we've been in the blind for about three hours
[25:09] Speaker 12: and my son wanted to. Leave we're getting ready to,
[25:11] Speaker 12: leave so we're kind of checking things for the last.
[25:13] Speaker 12: Time two jakes had snuck up on. Us they weren't
[25:17] Speaker 12: fifteen yards. Away and he, GOES i, goes so you
[25:21] Speaker 12: want to shoot a? Jake he goes, Absolutely And i'm
[25:24] Speaker 12: messing with my camera trying to videotape it and do,
[25:26] Speaker 12: whatever And i'm getting in behind him and, bang the
[25:28] Speaker 12: gun goes off because he wasn't gonna wait for me
[25:31] Speaker 12: because he'd missed that one the day before and just,
[25:34] Speaker 12: rolle just smart, move just rolled it down the. Hill
[25:38] Speaker 12: it literally tumbled down the hill into the decoy's game set.
[25:42] Speaker 12: Match so that twenty eight page great. Round the Super
[25:46] Speaker 12: Black egle really. Fun gone small in. Stature you, know
[25:50] Speaker 12: we had that one, misfire but that was our fault
[25:52] Speaker 12: and the reason we have. One the reason we have
[25:54] Speaker 12: a Super Black eagle is THAT i have A, Etho
[25:58] Speaker 12: so twenty eight Age, ethos really nice, guns sport sporting.
[26:02] Speaker 12: Gun it's parted and. Everything and both my sons were
[26:06] Speaker 12: shoot shooting those those shortest stock. Guns, well now my
[26:10] Speaker 12: youngest son is five to, Seven by oldest son he's,
[26:12] Speaker 12: Sixteen so the eleven year old's five to, seven the
[26:15] Speaker 12: oldest one is six to. Two they can shoot full sized.
[26:18] Speaker 12: GUNS i made the mistake of letting my youngest son
[26:21] Speaker 12: shoot My ethos last this fall for. Pheasants well he's
[26:25] Speaker 12: not going to go back to any other, guns SO
[26:27] Speaker 12: i had to buy another. One so now we've got
[26:29] Speaker 12: two twenty eight Gates bonelli's and they're just an absolute.
[26:33] Speaker 2: Blast and you're, right that's a great range report AND
[26:37] Speaker 2: i appreciate. That thank you for that. Call the twenty
[26:39] Speaker 2: eight gauge is very much misunderstood and. Underappreciated with good
[26:43] Speaker 2: loads it. Is for the most, part it's as good
[26:46] Speaker 2: as twenty, gaugs much much much better than a. FOURTEEN
[26:50] Speaker 2: i would not start a youngster out with a. Fourteen
[26:51] Speaker 2: fourteen is really an experts. Guns it's just hard to
[26:54] Speaker 2: down birds and break targets with a four. Ten there's
[26:56] Speaker 2: just not much shot out, there the shot patterns so
[26:59] Speaker 2: small and not very. Dense twenty eight games is a
[27:02] Speaker 2: whole different. Deal and now that we've got THIS tss,
[27:06] Speaker 2: shot which is, tungsten and it is insanely. EXPENSIVE i,
[27:11] Speaker 2: Mean i'm looking at online right now at ninety dollars
[27:13] Speaker 2: for five not for five boxes for five, rounds but
[27:18] Speaker 2: it was that fifteen dollars. Ballo, yeah about fifteen bucks.
[27:21] Speaker 2: Around it is exactly. That but it's amazing what it.
[27:26] Speaker 2: Does AND i know people, say, well you could use
[27:28] Speaker 2: it for. Waterfowl you, could BUT i wouldn't want to
[27:30] Speaker 2: shoot a lot of that at that. Price but for
[27:31] Speaker 2: turkeys where you're only going to shoot once or twice
[27:34] Speaker 2: and it may extend your range an honest twenty. Yards
[27:39] Speaker 2: it's amazing. Stuff one little quick story BEFORE i hit
[27:42] Speaker 2: the brake in just a. Minute, anyway The Super Black,
[27:47] Speaker 2: eagle going way back To Bonelli Super Black, eagle we
[27:52] Speaker 2: did an. Article my dad actually wrote it For sports
[27:56] Speaker 2: And field magazine when he was a shooting editor, there
[27:58] Speaker 2: and he, Said, HEY i want to get like the
[28:00] Speaker 2: top shotguns they're out, there and, YEAH i got, It thank, You.
[28:04] Speaker 2: JIM i want to shoot the top shotguns and see
[28:10] Speaker 2: how well they. Run he, said, okay so he got
[28:13] Speaker 2: IN i think he did five of, them went out
[28:15] Speaker 2: to the local. Range he Got ammo supplied By ammo,
[28:17] Speaker 2: makers and he opened it up to the public said
[28:19] Speaker 2: come out and shoot clays FREE amo free. Guns the
[28:23] Speaker 2: only thing was at each station they had a gun
[28:25] Speaker 2: on the table and they had a clipboard and each
[28:27] Speaker 2: time there was any kind of malfunction they had to
[28:30] Speaker 2: make a note of. It and so it's basically just
[28:33] Speaker 2: wanted to see how long they would run all these,
[28:37] Speaker 2: shotguns all automatic semi, autos without cleaning. Them, okay, fine
[28:43] Speaker 2: well it starts shooting them and they're using Good ammo.
[28:45] Speaker 2: Target ammo allows THE amo cheap you, Know walmart TYPE, amo,
[28:49] Speaker 2: everything just mixing it all up and people just shoot
[28:52] Speaker 2: clay targets having a great old, time and one by
[28:55] Speaker 2: one they had, malfunctions and they started noting, them and
[28:59] Speaker 2: then clear At dolge saw many one by, one and
[29:03] Speaker 2: then at the end of the, test when they had
[29:06] Speaker 2: done the whole, thing they had four guns that had,
[29:08] Speaker 2: malfunctioned one that it had. Zero The Bonelli Super Black
[29:13] Speaker 2: eagle had zero. Malfunctions without cleaning, it it just kept.
[29:20] Speaker 2: Running it's one of the reasons it's so powerful today
[29:24] Speaker 2: in terms of. Sales. Now the unfortunate part of the,
[29:28] Speaker 2: story and it does go back to my old magazine,
[29:32] Speaker 2: days which goes way back and how magazines were running are,
[29:35] Speaker 2: run is that the, editors after he wrote the article
[29:39] Speaker 2: up and after they had proved it and sent it, in they,
[29:40] Speaker 2: said we can't run. This it's what do you, Mean,
[29:43] Speaker 2: well we're going to Make bonelli happy and make four
[29:46] Speaker 2: of our advertisers. Unhappy we're not running. It and it never.
[29:52] Speaker 2: Ran and that's kind of the way magazines have always been.
[29:56] Speaker 2: RUN i, MEAN i get. It that's. LOOK i was
[29:59] Speaker 2: in thegazine business for a long long, time and that
[30:02] Speaker 2: is the nature of the. Beast we just watched the
[30:05] Speaker 2: Movie The Devil Wears productude it's about basically about a,
[30:08] Speaker 2: magazine and there's some of that in, there AND i was, thinking,
[30:10] Speaker 2: yeah that's kind of how it. Works the advertisers they
[30:14] Speaker 2: have a, say because if you don't have the, advertisers
[30:16] Speaker 2: you don't have a, magazine you don't have a. Business
[30:18] Speaker 2: but that was the whole. Deal so if sometimes you
[30:21] Speaker 2: think the magazines are running articles about products that you
[30:24] Speaker 2: also see a full page add, on, Duh, yeah that's
[30:27] Speaker 2: how it. Works Let's Beard lyne. Three brad's with us
[30:30] Speaker 2: out Of indiana with a range oft for. Us, Hey,
[30:33] Speaker 2: brad what do you?
[30:33] Speaker 5: GOT i just got back From arkansas WHERE i did
[30:39] Speaker 5: an active shooter instructor training With Ed munk last resort
[30:43] Speaker 5: gun training.
[30:46] Speaker 2: Night we've had endless show here. Before how was?
[30:49] Speaker 5: That that was absolutely? Fabulous he's got it down and,
[30:56] Speaker 5: Uh i'm sure you read his book the first thirty, Seconds,
[31:01] Speaker 5: yes and it. Is it is very very. Good AND
[31:05] Speaker 5: i would go back and heartbeat and hopefully take some,
[31:09] Speaker 5: friends people on church security teams and so. Forth it was.
[31:16] Speaker 5: Good it was. Good you don't do a high round.
[31:20] Speaker 5: Count you do a lot of. Thinking you enter a
[31:23] Speaker 5: scenario and you've got to find the bad. Guy and
[31:27] Speaker 5: take him out and ignore the people who are down,
[31:30] Speaker 5: wounded the. Distractions they have a soundtrack with screaming and,
[31:35] Speaker 5: gunfire and it was just very very.
[31:39] Speaker 6: Good i'm going to.
[31:42] Speaker 2: Take a guess, here BUT i want to get your
[31:45] Speaker 2: take on it of how it, developed Because i'm thinking
[31:48] Speaker 2: the first time through is incredibly distracting and, confusing and
[31:54] Speaker 2: then the more you do, it you end up just
[31:56] Speaker 2: kind of working your way through and problem solving and
[31:58] Speaker 2: ignoring all of that.
[31:59] Speaker 5: STUFF i didn't really like the soundtrack bother me.
[32:09] Speaker 3: So.
[32:09] Speaker 5: Much i've done a lot of training with The Sheriff's
[32:14] Speaker 5: department and gun, signing SO i kept my mind on
[32:20] Speaker 5: sorting through the innocence and finding they would put a,
[32:25] Speaker 5: gun a long, gun or a pistol on the. Target
[32:28] Speaker 5: he had one bait that was flat paper colored, targets
[32:32] Speaker 5: but he had the other bay was all of the
[32:34] Speaker 5: THREE d foamed torsos that were dressed in shirts and
[32:39] Speaker 5: hats and.
[32:39] Speaker 2: Things what's your takeaway if you had to tell, Somebody,
[32:44] Speaker 2: OKAY i just did this, class and this is WHAT
[32:46] Speaker 2: i learned and what you probably don't know about providing
[32:50] Speaker 2: security in an active shooter.
[32:51] Speaker 5: Situation, well a couple of Things i've learned is the
[32:58] Speaker 5: best security teams have, layers starting with people in the parking,
[33:03] Speaker 5: lot people greeting at the, door people in the. Sanctuary
[33:08] Speaker 5: so hopefully if someone's coming in meaning to do bad,
[33:12] Speaker 5: things that someone will get an eye on them early
[33:17] Speaker 5: on instead of waiting for the guy to stand up
[33:20] Speaker 5: and pull a.
[33:20] Speaker 2: Gun, yes if you can stop them in the parking,
[33:24] Speaker 2: lot don't ever let them get in the, building you
[33:26] Speaker 2: can actually prevent the mass shitty from even.
[33:28] Speaker 5: Starting absolutely, Absolutely So i'm hoping to take part in
[33:35] Speaker 5: a fringe little church and work with their security team
[33:39] Speaker 5: and give them a. Hand, tom you AND i are
[33:42] Speaker 5: going to be In arizona here in about a, week
[33:44] Speaker 5: and we're going to be in the same.
[33:46] Speaker 2: Class, really you're going to do the two point fifty
[33:50] Speaker 2: the old guys classic car.
[33:51] Speaker 5: Class, Yeah i'm kind of wondering about all of us
[33:56] Speaker 5: old guys who went to gun site. BACK i went
[33:59] Speaker 5: nineteen the first, time And i'm kind of curious about
[34:04] Speaker 5: how we're going to do on the time limits of
[34:06] Speaker 5: kneeling and going. Prone how about.
[34:09] Speaker 2: YOU i don't think kneeling and going prone's going to

[35:00] Speaker 2: we're going to have fun and we're going to tune,
[35:02] Speaker 2: up BECAUSE i don't care what gun you're. Using when
[35:05] Speaker 2: you go take a five day class like, this you're

[35:43] Speaker 2: i would like to, DO i would just tell you

[35:54] Speaker 2: three fifty, class the next class along the, line and if,
[35:56] Speaker 2: So i'm going to sign up for one of those pretty.
[35:58] Speaker 5: Quickly i've done three point fifty, twice and THEN i
[36:03] Speaker 5: did four ninety nine and shotgun and, carbing and THEN
[36:07] Speaker 5: i started branching out trying some other instructors and. Schools

[38:47] Speaker 2: the next. CLASS i think it's just a little bit more,
[38:49] Speaker 2: movement a little more of this than. That but, honestly you,

[39:24] Speaker 3: That.
[39:25] Speaker 2: One mark has joined us right now BECAUSE i said
[39:27] Speaker 2: something about the four ten And mark, SAYS i beg your,
[39:30] Speaker 2: Pardon So, mark you have the, Floor, SIR i ain't.

[39:49] Speaker 4: ME i bought it for eight dollars A Girt brothers In.
[39:52] Speaker 2: Aurora is it a popper or what is?
[39:57] Speaker 4: It it's a single, shot, Breakover, oh breaks over all
[40:02] Speaker 4: the way and touches the trigger.
[40:04] Speaker 2: Guard oh, yeah, yes, yes, yes we had one of
[40:07] Speaker 2: those WHEN i was a.
[40:08] Speaker 4: Kid, oh it's a beautiful it's a beautiful four. TEN
[40:13] Speaker 4: i don't know what kind it.
[40:14] Speaker 2: Is, yeah what do you use it?
[40:17] Speaker 4: For, well back then were my uncle and my dad
[40:22] Speaker 4: would carry twenty two's and shoot jack rabbits while they were. Sitting,
[40:27] Speaker 4: well when they. Missed as, boys all that, shotguns my
[40:30] Speaker 4: two cousins, said clo. Games, uh automatics, Right, OH i
[40:37] Speaker 4: had was zach because they was older and most of.
[40:41] Speaker 4: DIED i come back with more rabbits than they did
[40:44] Speaker 4: with the automatics BECAUSE i only had the single shot
[40:47] Speaker 4: AND i didn't.
[40:48] Speaker 2: Miss real you had to make it count because you
[40:50] Speaker 2: knew you didn't have a follow up. Shot, Yep i'll be.
[40:55] Speaker 2: Dying do you still shoot that?
[40:56] Speaker 4: Gun, oh that's WHAT i killed my last three turkeys.
[40:59] Speaker 4: With i'll BE i have during the week while my
[41:03] Speaker 4: grandson's at the school and he is on the, weekends
[41:08] Speaker 4: and he's killed three turkeys with the. TWO i love.
[41:13] Speaker 2: It, well do everybody a. Favor be sure to. Record
[41:16] Speaker 2: use your phone or something records some videos of you
[41:18] Speaker 2: tell them stories about the hunts you, had and you,
[41:21] Speaker 2: know the stories that go way back with that, gun
[41:23] Speaker 2: because at this point the stories are at least as
[41:25] Speaker 2: important as the gun.
[41:26] Speaker 4: Itself well that's what the deer stand In turkey stands.
[41:31] Speaker 2: For, OH i like. It that's. Right that is the
[41:34] Speaker 2: storytelling place it exactly that. Mark thank you for your.
[41:37] Speaker 2: CALL i appreciate. THAT i remember that old folding four
[41:40] Speaker 2: to ten single shot hammer, gun AND i DON'T i
[41:46] Speaker 2: don't remember if that was a savage or. What you,
[41:49] Speaker 2: know if you, know you probably remember that. Gun give
[41:52] Speaker 2: me a call let me. KNOW i just cannot. REMEMBER
[41:55] Speaker 2: i want. TO i keep wanting to say, savage BUT
[41:57] Speaker 2: i don't know for. Sure, yeah and it, would you,
[42:00] Speaker 2: know break, open but then it would fold all the
[42:02] Speaker 2: way over and be very. Compact and IF i remember,
[42:05] Speaker 2: right there was even like a little indentation in the
[42:08] Speaker 2: four end stock that would take the trigger guard in.
[42:12] Speaker 2: There so that was that was pretty cool and it
[42:15] Speaker 2: was just a little pack away go wait. Nothing it
[42:16] Speaker 2: was great for, kids you. Know AND i still stand
[42:19] Speaker 2: by my idea that four tens are more difficult to hit.
[42:22] Speaker 2: With they just don't have a lot of. Shot there
[42:25] Speaker 2: is a reason that in shotgun competitions the scores are
[42:30] Speaker 2: lower for four ten than they are for twenty eight and,
[42:34] Speaker 2: twelve and even you, know in, anything really four tens
[42:39] Speaker 2: just don't have as much. Shot the patterned density is,
[42:43] Speaker 2: less you have fewer, pellets so they're going to break fewer.
[42:47] Speaker 2: Targets they're going to be restricted on range and. Power
[42:53] Speaker 2: having said, THAT i love shooting to four. Ten i've
[42:56] Speaker 2: got a couple of The i've got to No Winchester
[42:58] Speaker 2: model forty, two which is their version of The model.
[43:01] Speaker 2: Twelve but in four, Ten i'm trying to, Remember i've
[43:05] Speaker 2: got A i think A remington eight seventy in, FOURTEEN
[43:09] Speaker 2: i have a shot that in. FOREVER i have to
[43:11] Speaker 2: dig that thing out and take a look at it
[43:12] Speaker 2: and just bring it up. Memories i'm thinking somewhere in
[43:15] Speaker 2: the back of a, SAFE i think there is that gun.
[43:18] Speaker 2: Somewhere i'll have to see IF i can find that.
[43:20] Speaker 2: Thing but, yeah The Winchester model forty, two what a.
[43:24] Speaker 2: Classic that. Is love to shoot. It but if you said,
[43:28] Speaker 2: yeah but you're gonna have bets on breaking. Targets i'm
[43:31] Speaker 2: not taking at four. Ten, Honestly i'm not even taking
[43:34] Speaker 2: a twenty. Gates i'm gonna take a twelve. Games it's
[43:36] Speaker 2: just gonna given the odds a little bit. Better there you,
[43:39] Speaker 2: go eight six six talk. Gun look at your range of.
[43:43] Speaker 2: Parts we'll be right. Back
