We often imagine the Ottoman court as a world dominated by men—sultans, viziers, and janissaries. But for nearly two centuries, a different kind of power operated within the walls of Topkapı Palace. This episode explores the 'Sultanate of Women,' a period where mothers, wives, and sisters of the sultan wielded immense influence over state policy, architecture, and foreign diplomacy. We’ll look at figures like Hürrem Sultan, who broke tradition to marry the throne, and Kösem Sultan, who ruled from behind the scenes during times of crisis. Through their letters, architectural patronage, and political maneuvering, these women shaped the empire’s trajectory in ways that modern historians are only beginning to fully appreciate. #SultanateOfWomen #HurremSultan #KosemSultan #TopkapiPalace #OttomanHistory #OttomanEmpire #IslamicHistory #MiddleEastHistory #WomenInPower #ImperialHarem #TurkishHistory #ByzantineLegacy #SuleimanTheMagnificent #Roxelana #ValideSultan #OttomanPolitics #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
