In the mid-17th century, the Ottoman Empire was reeling from internal chaos, military defeats, and a crumbling economy. Enter the Köprülü family — a father and son dynasty of grand viziers who pulled the empire back from the brink. This episode dives into the reforms of Mehmed Köprülü, who crushed rebellions and restored central authority, and his son Fazıl Ahmed Köprülü, who campaigned against Venice, captured Crete, and fought the Habsburgs. We explore their ruthless methods, their patronage of scholars, and the brief golden age they created. But we also ask: did their hardline approach plant the seeds for the empire's later stagnation? Hear about the brutal siege of Candia, the peace of Vasvár, and the rise of Kara Mustafa Pasha, whose overreach at Vienna would shatter their legacy.
