[0:00] Speaker 1: Get ready. Yes!
[0:02] Speaker 2: It's Joel Creasy.
[0:04] Speaker 1: Joel Creasy! With the Joel Creasy Show.
[0:14] Speaker 3: Welcome to the Joel Creasy Show, a funny people edition.
[0:17] Speaker 4: I love when I get the chance to chat to
[0:21] Speaker 4: comics in the studio because that is my, I was
[0:25] Speaker 4: going to say where my training comes from. I don't
[0:27] Speaker 4: think comics we train, but that is my bread and
[0:28] Speaker 4: butter and how I got into this biz and how
[0:31] Speaker 4: you ended up with me in your ear holes and
[0:34] Speaker 4: on this edition I am joined by two uh two
[0:37] Speaker 4: people that I have I have known for quite some
[0:39] Speaker 4: time and not super well but we've uh worked together
[0:43] Speaker 4: a fair bit and but that's kind of where it's
[0:45] Speaker 4: um it's in so it was nice to actually have
[0:47] Speaker 4: them in the studio and get a chance to chat
[0:49] Speaker 4: outside of backstage at a comedy club where everyone's sort
[0:51] Speaker 4: of you know like rolling their eyes or checking their
[0:53] Speaker 4: checking the time to see when they'll be taking to
[0:55] Speaker 4: the stage up first is Jim Owen who actually I
[0:57] Speaker 4: first met when I was putting a jacket on backstage
[1:00] Speaker 4: at a gig I'd finished, he was about to go on,
[1:02] Speaker 4: and I accidentally punched him in the face as I
[1:04] Speaker 4: was putting.
[1:04] Speaker 3: My arm through the hole.
[1:06] Speaker 4: So it was lovely to get him into the studio
[1:08] Speaker 4: and apologise, and he just dazzled me with some brilliant stories.
[1:12] Speaker 3: Here's Jim Owen. This is The Joel Creasy Show.
[1:16] Speaker 4: Comedy legend Jim Owen is here. Hey, I just want
[1:19] Speaker 4: to point out that I have read your full press
[1:21] Speaker 4: release because at the end.
[1:22] Speaker 1: I got a press release! You have.
[1:24] Speaker 4: Jim Owen says, does anyone ever read these things anyway?
[1:27] Speaker 4: I'm sure they don't. If you got this far, then
[1:29] Speaker 4: well done you.
[1:31] Speaker 1: Yeah, well done you. You probably went to the last line.
[1:34] Speaker 1: You haven't read it at all.
[1:35] Speaker 4: Yeah, let me just have a look at the other. No,
[1:36] Speaker 4: I highlighted the Royal Variety performance.
[1:39] Speaker 1: Yes, yeah, yeah.
[1:40] Speaker 3: What's that like to do?
[1:41] Speaker 1: Quite nerve-wracking, yeah. And long, and ridiculously long.
[1:44] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[1:46] Speaker 1: I was on after Barry Manilow, so I'm geared up. Okay.
[1:49] Speaker 1: And at the end of his bit, which was a
[1:51] Speaker 1: medley of all his big hits– He just does this
[1:53] Speaker 1: little skip to the front of the stage and goes,
[1:56] Speaker 1: I'm going to have to do that again. This is
[2:00] Speaker 1: like maybe two hours, 45 minutes into it. And everyone went, oh, God.
[2:06] Speaker 1: But it went really well. And if you looked at
[2:08] Speaker 1: that bill, you would think there's way too many comics
[2:11] Speaker 1: because every time there's this, there's 10 comics. So every
[2:14] Speaker 1: time there's a number of comics, but the idea for
[2:17] Speaker 1: the comics, Is that they go down stage and the
[2:21] Speaker 1: back curtain comes in.
[2:22] Speaker 3: Right, okay.
[2:22] Speaker 1: And they strike.
[2:24] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[2:25] Speaker 1: Barry Manilow. I hope they strike him hard.
[2:27] Speaker 3: Strike Barry Manilow, please.
[2:29] Speaker 1: And then I could hear all the banging going on
[2:30] Speaker 1: behind me.
[2:31] Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
[2:31] Speaker 1: And then the curtain comes up and it's singing in
[2:33] Speaker 1: the rain. With the full, you know, the full water
[2:38] Speaker 1: coming down. But, yeah, nice experience. Yeah, you know. It
[2:43] Speaker 1: used to be a kingmaker, that show. Like, if you
[2:45] Speaker 1: got on that show.
[2:46] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[2:46] Speaker 1: And you did well, that would launch your career. But,
[2:50] Speaker 1: you know, those shows just don't. Like Apollo, Live at
[2:54] Speaker 1: the Apollo, that used to be a kingmaker. I know.
[2:56] Speaker 1: They've axed that now.
[2:58] Speaker 3: That's like as of very recently.
[2:59] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[3:00] Speaker 3: That was always on my dream list to do. I
[3:03] Speaker 3: never got to do it. I was so bummed when
[3:04] Speaker 3: I saw that.
[3:04] Speaker 1: When did you do it? I did it three times.
[3:08] Speaker 3: What royal was that, the royal variety performance you did?
[3:10] Speaker 1: It wasn't even a good one.
[3:12] Speaker 3: I was going to say.
[3:12] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[3:13] Speaker 1: Prince Andrew. No! No, it wasn't him. Petty. It was
[3:26] Speaker 1: Prince Anne.
[3:27] Speaker 3: Oh, well, she goes to everything. She's the busiest royal.
[3:30] Speaker 3: I mean, yeah. I've watched that documentary, The Crown. I
[3:33] Speaker 3: seem to quite like Anne.
[3:34] Speaker 1: Right. Yeah.
[3:36] Speaker 4: Do you get any restrictions on what you can say
[3:38] Speaker 4: at the Royal Variety? Are you allowed to swear?
[3:41] Speaker 5: No.
[3:42] Speaker 1: No, we can't swear. No. And you have to nod, actually.
[3:47] Speaker 1: You have to do that little curtsy to the queen
[3:50] Speaker 1: or the member of the royal family.
[3:52] Speaker 3: Do you bow or curtsy?
[3:54] Speaker 1: You just have to do a little acknowledgement. What?
[4:00] Speaker 3: What did you think?
[4:01] Speaker 1: I can see you.
[4:02] Speaker 3: Singing the rain's coming up.
[4:04] Speaker 1: Don't worry. They're here.
[4:06] Speaker 4: I remember the first time we met. We were doing,
[4:08] Speaker 4: and I mentioned this to you when I saw you
[4:10] Speaker 4: the other night, and I'm so glad you'd forgotten. We
[4:14] Speaker 4: were doing one of those gigs just before like a
[4:16] Speaker 4: comedy festival gala and everyone was on sort of trying
[4:19] Speaker 4: out the material. And I had just finished and you
[4:22] Speaker 4: just arrived and I was putting on my jacket backstage
[4:25] Speaker 4: and I was putting my arm through and you were
[4:27] Speaker 4: just behind me and I fully punched you in the face.
[4:30] Speaker 4: And I was quite early on in comedy. I was like,
[4:32] Speaker 4: oh my God, I've just punched Jim Owen in the face.
[4:33] Speaker 4: And we've never met before.
[4:36] Speaker 1: Did you go to Edinburgh one year?
[4:38] Speaker 3: I've done it once.
[4:39] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[4:40] Speaker 3: And I hated it.
[4:41] Speaker 1: Was it with Joan Rivers? I remember you supported Joan Rivers.
[4:46] Speaker 5: I went.
[4:46] Speaker 1: And she was there.
[4:47] Speaker 3: I went the year after she passed. Or the year
[4:50] Speaker 3: she did pass.
[4:52] Speaker 1: Right.
[4:52] Speaker 3: Yeah, because I was with her for a few years.
[4:55] Speaker 1: Right.
[4:55] Speaker 4: The comedy hack she taught me, even at 81 when
[4:57] Speaker 4: I was working with her, she'd be on her hands
[4:59] Speaker 4: and knees. with black cardboard and a white pen, and
[5:02] Speaker 4: she'd write her set list out big on that, and
[5:05] Speaker 4: then you'd lie on the stage, which is also black,
[5:08] Speaker 4: and then no one can see it.
[5:09] Speaker 3: You could just see the white writing.
[5:10] Speaker 1: Oh, that's nice.
[5:11] Speaker 3: I still do that one.
[5:12] Speaker 1: I've done chalk on the stage. When I went to Edinburgh,
[5:15] Speaker 1: I did just white chalk.
[5:17] Speaker 3: That's smart.
[5:18] Speaker 1: And, you know... different person said I know I have
[5:21] Speaker 1: to move over here.
[5:23] Speaker 3: If I want to know how you lot going yeah because.
[5:27] Speaker 4: There's nothing more obvious than when you've got on your
[5:28] Speaker 4: stool and you're like taking a long sip of water
[5:30] Speaker 4: and you're like hang on no I'm just taking a
[5:31] Speaker 4: really long sip that's how I drink water because you
[5:36] Speaker 4: do something that I cannot do but I admire in
[5:39] Speaker 4: other comedians you do proper observational comedy how do you
[5:44] Speaker 4: do that because I cannot do that I always think
[5:48] Speaker 4: oh that's funny.
[5:49] Speaker 1: You know, I used to do it more, but I
[5:50] Speaker 1: started scrolling on my phone. And scrolling just destroys creativity,
[5:55] Speaker 1: I think. You know, you're in a zone. But I
[5:58] Speaker 1: used to find that if I sat long enough... If
[6:01] Speaker 1: you go looking for a joke, they just don't turn up.
[6:04] Speaker 3: Nah.
[6:05] Speaker 1: If you find that you're watching something, and then you... Like,
[6:07] Speaker 1: you're the first person to see the joke. You don't
[6:09] Speaker 1: write the joke. You go... A thought comes in, you go, Oh, yeah.
[6:15] Speaker 1: So it kind of lets it happen. And then when
[6:18] Speaker 1: you find yourself laughing at something, you go, right, what
[6:21] Speaker 1: is it that I'm laughing at? And can I convey that?
[6:24] Speaker 1: And the best ones are the things that are right
[6:27] Speaker 1: in front of you. 100%. That are there, you know,
[6:30] Speaker 1: and if no one else is talking about it, then
[6:32] Speaker 1: you feel, you know, not only is it a good joke,
[6:35] Speaker 1: but it's a unique topic.
[6:37] Speaker 4: That's why I admire observational comedy because it's so far
[6:39] Speaker 4: from what I do, but I love that sort of
[6:41] Speaker 4: watching comedy where, you can nudge your friend and be like, oh,
[6:44] Speaker 4: we do that.
[6:44] Speaker 3: It's just the most pure form of comedy, I think.
[6:46] Speaker 1: Well, the worst one for me is when I've got
[6:48] Speaker 1: something about it and I'm like, that's not going to work.
[6:50] Speaker 1: They're not going to get that. And then someone else
[6:52] Speaker 1: does it and you're like, oh, my God.
[6:54] Speaker 3: I've been thinking about that forever.
[6:57] Speaker 1: I've been sitting on that. Oh, you idiot. Yeah.
[7:00] Speaker 4: I've overthought that one. Because you, like, you are, like,
[7:04] Speaker 4: always on the right. I mean, you've got shows coming up. Noosa,
[7:05] Speaker 4: Byron Bay, Sutherland, Boweral, Goulburn, Chuka and Shepparton.
[7:11] Speaker 1: And then I go to the UK for five weeks.
[7:13] Speaker 1: And I can do 90 gigs. And then if I
[7:15] Speaker 1: go above that, I move into a different tax bracket.
[7:18] Speaker 3: Do people watch me?
[7:20] Speaker 1: How many gigs? I can quite simply say 90. I've
[7:23] Speaker 1: worked it out.
[7:24] Speaker 4: Did you have a link to Prince as well?
[7:28] Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I worked at concerts in London and played
[7:33] Speaker 1: Wembley six nights in a row. And I worked at
[7:35] Speaker 1: every one of them. Really? In the mosh pit.
[7:39] Speaker 3: What were you doing in the mosque?
[7:40] Speaker 5: It worked.
[7:40] Speaker 1: Well, I was doing security, you know. Oh, you were
[7:43] Speaker 1: doing security. Well, you know, you showed people their seats
[7:48] Speaker 1: and then you just moved into that area. Yeah.
[7:50] Speaker 5: Cool.
[7:51] Speaker 1: And it was like a religious experience. Yeah. Like, I
[7:55] Speaker 1: really didn't think that much of Prince because the British
[7:58] Speaker 1: press had mocked him. Mm-hmm. But when he, he could dance, like,
[8:02] Speaker 1: he could, he was such an amazing dancer.
[8:05] Speaker 5: Mm.
[8:05] Speaker 1: And then he did the sound check, so. He'd get
[8:07] Speaker 1: on the drums and someone started, do Raspberry Berets. And he'd...
[8:13] Speaker 1: Take a look, Wes. Working part-time in a Bible stand.
[8:18] Speaker 1: Boss was... And then over to the keyboard.
[8:23] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[8:24] Speaker 1: Anybody want to hear? And he just did all these
[8:27] Speaker 1: songs and then did the sound check. That's so cool.
[8:30] Speaker 1: And then did the show. And that's the best concert
[8:33] Speaker 1: I've ever been to.
[8:34] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[8:35] Speaker 3: Yeah, and you saw it six times.
[8:36] Speaker 1: Six times in a row.
[8:37] Speaker 4: Because I always think when I've got, like, someone doing my,
[8:39] Speaker 4: you know, sound and stuff for a show that I'm
[8:42] Speaker 4: doing for weeks on end, that poor person. Yeah, yeah.
[8:44] Speaker 3: I've seen this every night. And when I hear, if
[8:47] Speaker 3: someone says, oh, your tech was laughing, that's the highest compliment.
[8:51] Speaker 1: You know, when I go and see a show, I
[8:53] Speaker 1: always look over at the tech to see.
[8:54] Speaker 3: It's the giveaway, isn't it?
[8:55] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[8:56] Speaker 3: If they're on their phone.
[8:57] Speaker 1: To see how much ad-libbing or how chaotic the show is. Yeah.
[9:00] Speaker 3: Have you ever had any horror corporates? Do you do corporates?
[9:02] Speaker 1: Yeah. Any horror ones? Oh, yeah.
[9:04] Speaker 3: Oh, God.
[9:05] Speaker 1: I got one for the Port Melbourne Cricket Club. Great.
[9:08] Speaker 1: And I absolutely died. I did my first joke, which
[9:13] Speaker 1: is always your best joke. Yeah. And it died. Oh, no.
[9:15] Speaker 1: And then I did my last joke, which is always
[9:17] Speaker 1: your second best joke.
[9:18] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[9:19] Speaker 1: Because you want to finish on a laugh. That died.
[9:21] Speaker 1: That died. And then I thought, I'm in trouble here.
[9:25] Speaker 1: Then I did Bob's act. I did Bob Franklin's act.
[9:32] Speaker 1: And this guy kept walking. I had to tell Bob
[9:34] Speaker 1: the next day that he had died in his ass.
[9:37] Speaker 3: And he doesn't get the pay either.
[9:40] Speaker 1: They didn't want to pay me either.
[9:41] Speaker 5: What?
[9:41] Speaker 1: That was the other thing.
[9:42] Speaker 3: Wait, they were paying you and then after they said.
[9:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, they wouldn't pay you. But I had nowhere
[9:47] Speaker 1: to go. There was no backstage. I went into the toilets.
[9:50] Speaker 1: And then everyone that was just, they're going to the
[9:53] Speaker 1: toilet and they're going, geez. And then they see me
[9:57] Speaker 1: sitting there. That is so brutal.
[10:09] Speaker 4: Jim Owen, you're an absolute legend. Thank you so much
[10:11] Speaker 4: for coming in. I so appreciate it.
[10:13] Speaker 1: I hope we didn't talk too much about comedy that
[10:15] Speaker 1: we talked to.
[10:16] Speaker 3: It's fascinating. We spoke about Prince.
[10:18] Speaker 1: Yeah, and Queen, the royal family. Prince, Queen, the royal family.
[10:23] Speaker 3: We covered it. Thank you so much.
[10:25] Speaker 1: Thank you, Joel.
[10:27] Speaker 3: The Joel Creasy Show.
[10:29] Speaker 4: That was the one-named celebrity, Jim Owen. And next up
[10:32] Speaker 4: is the, she's got two names, but we shortened the
[10:34] Speaker 4: first one. It's Mel Bracewell, who you may know from
[10:37] Speaker 4: The Cheap Seats. And thank God you're here. A bunch
[10:39] Speaker 4: of shows. She hails from New Zealand, but lives here
[10:42] Speaker 4: in Melbourne now. and is just absolutely dominating. We have
[10:46] Speaker 4: been venue buddies for many years at the Melbourne International
[10:49] Speaker 4: Comedy Festival, and she's always handy to have around because
[10:52] Speaker 4: she brings a ring light backstage, which I truly appreciate.
[10:55] Speaker 4: Please enjoy my chat with the very funny Mel Bracewell.
[10:59] Speaker 3: Yes, Jessica.
[11:02] Speaker 4: Melanie Bracewell, I've missed you so very much.
[11:06] Speaker 5: Hello. Is that because I didn't turn up yesterday when
[11:08] Speaker 5: we were supposed to do this interview? I'm just imagining
[11:11] Speaker 5: you sitting here, just waiting. There's like a little sign
[11:14] Speaker 5: with my name on it on the seat.
[11:17] Speaker 1: Where is she?
[11:18] Speaker 2: She stood me up.
[11:19] Speaker 3: She said she'd be here. I was dilly-dallying.
[11:21] Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
[11:22] Speaker 1: Wow.
[11:23] Speaker 2: That's actually, yeah, it was all a promotional stunt for
[11:25] Speaker 2: my show.
[11:25] Speaker 1: It's incredible.
[11:26] Speaker 4: You can grab tickets for Melanie Brace. I was dilly-dallying
[11:28] Speaker 4: to her at livenation.com.au. Mel, thanks for coming in.
[11:31] Speaker 2: It's amazing. The plug's right at the top.
[11:33] Speaker 5: You're supposed to earn your way and just say, come
[11:36] Speaker 5: see me live.
[11:37] Speaker 2: But it's like, no, no, I'll just tell you and go.
[11:39] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[11:40] Speaker 3: Wouldn't that be the dream?
[11:41] Speaker 2: Yeah. Just come or don't. Like either you know me
[11:44] Speaker 2: or you don't, whatever. I hate self-promoting. It is so hard.
[11:48] Speaker 4: Let me do it for you because I have, bizarrely,
[11:51] Speaker 4: I reckon I've seen you almost more than I've seen
[11:54] Speaker 4: most comedians because- For about three years, you and I
[11:57] Speaker 4: have been venue buddies at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
[12:00] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[12:01] Speaker 4: And I've been on after you, so I've caught the
[12:03] Speaker 4: last 20 minutes of your show most nights.
[12:05] Speaker 3: So many times.
[12:05] Speaker 2: All the callbacks that will make no sense to you.
[12:09] Speaker 4: Yeah, I did have to end up coming like a
[12:11] Speaker 4: week in. I was like, I need to see it
[12:12] Speaker 4: from the start so this makes sense.
[12:14] Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah. You watch it in like memento style. Like
[12:16] Speaker 5: it all just makes sense.
[12:19] Speaker 4: But I missed you. I didn't do this year and
[12:21] Speaker 4: I missed you. So I was like, I must summon
[12:24] Speaker 4: her in.
[12:25] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[12:25] Speaker 3: And catch up in the studio.
[12:26] Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely.
[12:28] Speaker 2: This is such a cool setup.
[12:29] Speaker 5: I love it.
[12:29] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, you've not been in here.
[12:30] Speaker 2: I've not been in here. This is your little room.
[12:32] Speaker 3: How many seasons of Cheap Seats is it now?
[12:34] Speaker 5: Six seasons, which is so insane. We just, we didn't
[12:38] Speaker 5: think we were going to get six episodes.
[12:40] Speaker 3: It's so bright. It's so funny. I watched the, my friends,
[12:45] Speaker 3: the grannies, the granny bingo on there. That was so funny.
[12:48] Speaker 2: It was so good.
[12:49] Speaker 5: And it was funny, the feedback, because, you know, like
[12:52] Speaker 5: we're still terrestrial television and we know that some of
[12:55] Speaker 5: our viewers are like very old school and you're like,
[12:59] Speaker 5: I wonder how this is going to go down.
[13:01] Speaker 2: Then I went to the, it was like an aeroplane museum,
[13:05] Speaker 2: don't ask.
[13:06] Speaker 3: You know I love planes.
[13:07] Speaker 2: Oh, you love planes?
[13:08] Speaker 1: Yeah. Oh, amazing.
[13:09] Speaker 3: I'm an aerosexual.
[13:10] Speaker 2: Oh my God, that's amazing.
[13:11] Speaker 5: I went to the Moorabbin Airport Museum and I went
[13:15] Speaker 5: there and there was this old guy and he was
[13:18] Speaker 5: trying to talk about me subtly to a woman that
[13:22] Speaker 5: worked there.
[13:22] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[13:23] Speaker 2: But she was not getting the fact that he was
[13:25] Speaker 2: trying to be subtle.
[13:25] Speaker 5: She's like, what do you mean the cheap seats? As
[13:29] Speaker 5: they're talking to each other, she's like, I've never heard
[13:31] Speaker 5: of that. And I'm like, oh, hi, sorry, you talking
[13:33] Speaker 5: about me?
[13:34] Speaker 3: Yeah, hey.
[13:35] Speaker 5: And this old guy, I want to say he's, I
[13:37] Speaker 5: don't want to actually say his age because if he
[13:38] Speaker 5: listens to this, he'll be like, I am not 70.
[13:40] Speaker 3: Well, is someone that age listening to that?
[13:43] Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe not.
[13:44] Speaker 5: And he was like, oh, I just want to say
[13:47] Speaker 5: I love the show. And those two blokes being women
[13:51] Speaker 5: were hilarious.
[13:52] Speaker 2: I was like, that is amazing.
[13:55] Speaker 5: Because if you're the sort of person I would have
[13:57] Speaker 5: thought would have.
[13:58] Speaker 2: Been like, oh, not for me.
[13:59] Speaker 3: But he adored it.
[14:01] Speaker 2: He loved it so much.
[14:02] Speaker 1: It was great.
[14:03] Speaker 3: But that's what's so nice about it.
[14:04] Speaker 4: You seem to have such autonomy on that show to
[14:07] Speaker 4: have people on that are funny and a bit left
[14:10] Speaker 4: of centre.
[14:11] Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
[14:12] Speaker 5: I think that's the thing is that Tim and I
[14:14] Speaker 5: will have a very stupid idea. And we are just
[14:17] Speaker 5: so shocked that no one says no.
[14:19] Speaker 4: My producer was telling me you started on, did you
[14:22] Speaker 4: start doing jokes on Tumblr?
[14:23] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
[14:24] Speaker 3: You were so.
[14:25] Speaker 2: I was a Tumblr girl, eh?
[14:26] Speaker 5: You were so cool.
[14:27] Speaker 2: Melodoodle on Tumblr.
[14:29] Speaker 3: Yeah, Melodoodle. Is that one of your handles somewhere else?
[14:32] Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm on like Twitter and I just, yeah, that's
[14:34] Speaker 5: sort of what my handle was on a lot of things.
[14:37] Speaker 2: For a while.
[14:37] Speaker 3: How does one do comedy on Tumblr?
[14:40] Speaker 2: That's what I mean.
[14:41] Speaker 5: I didn't realize when I started Tumblr, I just started
[14:44] Speaker 5: because all of the like girls were on Tumblr and
[14:46] Speaker 5: I thought that that was the.
[14:47] Speaker 2: Cool thing to do.
[14:48] Speaker 5: And like my, if you were to look at my
[14:50] Speaker 5: first post on Tumblr, it was like flowers and like,
[14:52] Speaker 5: and you know, like a girl, like a girl's shadow
[14:54] Speaker 5: in a window, you know, like it's just, it was
[14:57] Speaker 5: like silhouettes. It was like a blurry photo of a
[15:00] Speaker 5: girl in like a meadow. And like, that was kind of,
[15:04] Speaker 5: I don't, I honestly don't know. I just thought that's
[15:07] Speaker 5: just what it was. And I was like, oh, this
[15:08] Speaker 5: photo is kind of cool. And then I just sort
[15:12] Speaker 5: of just through following more people was like, oh, people
[15:14] Speaker 5: just like post jokes on here as well. And I
[15:16] Speaker 5: love comedy. Like I was like huge. I just watched
[15:19] Speaker 5: a lot of it. My dad was like, watch, watch
[15:21] Speaker 5: the stand up. And I was like big into Flight
[15:23] Speaker 5: of the Conchords and Monty Python and stuff. And so
[15:27] Speaker 5: I kind of was like, this could be fun. And
[15:30] Speaker 5: I remember like my first post, I can't even remember
[15:33] Speaker 5: what it was.
[15:34] Speaker 2: Like where I actually, it actually started to go viral.
[15:37] Speaker 5: And when I say viral, when I say viral, it
[15:39] Speaker 5: got 100 reposts.
[15:42] Speaker 3: And I could not sleep.
[15:44] Speaker 2: I was like, I've made it.
[15:47] Speaker 3: And you're leaving the house and saying Sonny's in a hat.
[15:50] Speaker 3: You're like, leave me alone in a hat.
[15:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, it was mad.
[15:53] Speaker 3: Any of those people that were following you from the
[15:54] Speaker 3: time of the day still like coming to your show?
[15:56] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so surreal.
[15:58] Speaker 5: Yeah. And like even in like England, like I would
[16:01] Speaker 5: go to a show in London and people would be like, oh,
[16:03] Speaker 5: I followed Maladoodle and I just wanted to see like
[16:05] Speaker 5: what you're up to now.
[16:06] Speaker 2: That's so sweet.
[16:07] Speaker 5: Yeah. It wasn't like I was like huge, but I
[16:10] Speaker 5: got to like 200,000 followers on Tumblr. What? Yeah.
[16:14] Speaker 3: I'm not a Tumblr person. That's crazy.
[16:17] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[16:17] Speaker 5: Some things just like went nuts and like they don't
[16:20] Speaker 5: even really make sense. Like one post that I had
[16:22] Speaker 5: like that got like a million likes was just my
[16:25] Speaker 5: dad accidentally called me dad once.
[16:26] Speaker 2: Like that's just like all it said.
[16:28] Speaker 5: Like that was the only, like it was a piece
[16:29] Speaker 5: of text and people were like, it's a funny thing
[16:33] Speaker 5: to think about.
[16:34] Speaker 1: What's he like?
[16:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly. And so, but then when in your core
[16:39] Speaker 3: did you know I'm going to do this on stage?
[16:41] Speaker 2: Probably after I did it like three or four times. Oh, really?
[16:45] Speaker 3: It wasn't bubbling away for a few years?
[16:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, it was like one.
[16:47] Speaker 5: Of those things where like, so I entered this competition
[16:50] Speaker 5: in New Zealand that was to get on a show
[16:52] Speaker 5: that was like equivalent of Have You Been Paying Attention.
[16:54] Speaker 2: Part of that.
[16:55] Speaker 5: Competition, you got to win a corporate event for McDonald's.
[16:59] Speaker 5: I was like, well, I have never done stand-up before.
[17:01] Speaker 3: What a way to start.
[17:01] Speaker 5: And so I got booked for this corporate and I
[17:03] Speaker 5: was like, I've never done this. So I booked myself
[17:05] Speaker 5: in for an open mic and did six minutes and
[17:07] Speaker 5: it went so great. It's like, I don't know, like
[17:09] Speaker 5: as if I got scouted on the street to be
[17:11] Speaker 5: a model or something.
[17:12] Speaker 2: And I'm like, well, I better, like, I don't know.
[17:13] Speaker 3: Better do a runway.
[17:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. And so.
[17:17] Speaker 5: I did the six minutes and I was like, I'm
[17:19] Speaker 5: great because I was the only person on the lineup
[17:21] Speaker 5: who didn't have notes because I didn't realize you were
[17:23] Speaker 5: allowed to have notes.
[17:24] Speaker 1: Oh, my gosh.
[17:25] Speaker 2: I was like, oh, wow.
[17:26] Speaker 5: Like people thought I was better than I was because
[17:29] Speaker 5: I wasn't reading anything.
[17:30] Speaker 3: I was just doing it.
[17:31] Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. And so then I was like, well, I'll
[17:34] Speaker 2: just do this exact six minutes at the corporate. And
[17:36] Speaker 2: it was awful.
[17:37] Speaker 3: It was so bad.
[17:39] Speaker 5: I just could not compute that I could say the
[17:41] Speaker 5: exact same words again.
[17:43] Speaker 2: And they would just not be funny the second time.
[17:44] Speaker 3: It's weird, isn't it?
[17:45] Speaker 2: It didn't make sense to me.
[17:46] Speaker 5: And I would like have like rhetorical questions that they
[17:50] Speaker 5: would answer. Like I was so thrown by it. It's like, like, like,
[17:54] Speaker 5: you know, you'd be like, don't you think it's crazy
[17:55] Speaker 5: how blah, blah, blah. And then someone would be like, oh,
[17:58] Speaker 5: it's not that crazy.
[17:59] Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, no.
[18:02] Speaker 1: Oh, no.
[18:03] Speaker 5: I did not expect anyone to talk back to me.
[18:05] Speaker 5: Thank you so much for coming in.
[18:07] Speaker 3: Love you, darling. Thank you.
[18:09] Speaker 1: Oh, I love you too.
