[0:02] Speaker 1: It's now time to welcome.
[0:04] Speaker 2: Hi.
[0:05] Speaker 1: The people's prince.
[0:07] Speaker 2: Part-time parent of a Tamagotchi. Boom! He's had four black
[0:12] Speaker 2: coffees and half an olive, so he's primed and ready
[0:15] Speaker 2: to go.
[0:15] Speaker 1: I'm a working show gal.
[0:17] Speaker 4: Get ready.
[0:18] Speaker 1: Yes!
[0:19] Speaker 5: It's Joel Creasy.
[0:21] Speaker 1: Joel Creasy!
[0:22] Speaker 5: With The Joel Creasy Show!
[0:28] Speaker 6: Well, this is a bit exciting. Welcome to the Joel
[0:30] Speaker 6: Creasy Show. Every day around here is special. We like
[0:33] Speaker 6: to really, you know, cap the week off with a bang.
[0:37] Speaker 6: And coming up today, we will be crossing, it doesn't
[0:40] Speaker 6: get much more showbiz than this, to backstage on Broadway,
[0:44] Speaker 6: New York. I'm going to be chatting to my mate,
[0:47] Speaker 6: the Tony-nominated and Olivier Award-winning star of stage, Marla Mindell. Now,
[0:54] Speaker 6: she is the co-creator of one of my absolute favourite musicals, Titanic,
[0:58] Speaker 6: which is a complete piss take of Titanic. She plays
[1:02] Speaker 6: Celine Dion alongside Jim Parsons and Frankie Grande. It is
[1:06] Speaker 6: a massive show, and she's going to be dialing in
[1:09] Speaker 6: just before she takes to the stage on Broadway in
[1:13] Speaker 6: front of thousands of people.
[1:15] Speaker 5: This is The Joel Creasy Show.
[1:17] Speaker 2: I'm so excited. I get to say this.
[1:19] Speaker 6: Beaming in from Broadway, the star of Titanic, Tony Award nominee,
[1:25] Speaker 6: about to take to the stage on Broadway, Marla Mandel.
[1:29] Speaker 2: Hello, gorgeous.
[1:30] Speaker 4: Hello. How are you?
[1:32] Speaker 2: Oh, I'm bloody ripper.
[1:33] Speaker 4: It's been so long.
[1:35] Speaker 2: That's better than Meryl Streep. That's good.
[1:37] Speaker 4: That's true.
[1:38] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[1:38] Speaker 1: That's true.
[1:39] Speaker 2: How are you?
[1:40] Speaker 6: How is life being like a leading lady on Broadway
[1:42] Speaker 6: in one of the biggest shows?
[1:44] Speaker 4: Oh, my God. It's incredible. It's exhausting.
[1:47] Speaker 3: It's everything that you could ever think and dream. I
[1:50] Speaker 3: feel so grateful to be here.
[1:52] Speaker 4: And to be doing HO's a week, and yet at
[1:54] Speaker 4: the same time, I am too old for this. I
[1:56] Speaker 4: don't know how people do this. I'm going to Europe
[2:00] Speaker 4: the second this show ends for two weeks.
[2:02] Speaker 1: Oh, is it?
[2:03] Speaker 4: Connie, come in here. Come say hi to Joel Creasy.
[2:05] Speaker 4: This is the co-creator of Titanic.
[2:07] Speaker 3: Oh, hi. Oh, hi.
[2:08] Speaker 2: This is Connie Rassouli. Hello. It's your co-star on stage, Constantine, a.k.a.
[2:13] Speaker 2: Jack from Titanic. Welcome to the show, unannounced. Oh, hello.
[2:18] Speaker 2: Where are you from? I'm from Melbourne. I'm from the
[2:21] Speaker 2: home of Kath and Kim.
[2:22] Speaker 1: Oh, I love Kath and Kim.
[2:24] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[2:25] Speaker 1: It's so nice to meet you.
[2:26] Speaker 6: Congratulations, by the way, on Titanic being off, off, now,
[2:31] Speaker 6: then off, now, proper.
[2:33] Speaker 1: Legit Broadway. I know, finally. It only took 10 years.
[2:37] Speaker 1: But I'm still 27.
[2:39] Speaker 2: How does that happen?
[2:40] Speaker 3: Yeah, it took 10 years. It took so long that
[2:42] Speaker 3: we started dressing like each other.
[2:44] Speaker 1: I look like a little lesbian.
[2:49] Speaker 6: How did you, like your Jag, your Celine, how did you,
[2:52] Speaker 6: how did you first meet?
[2:55] Speaker 3: Well, I wouldn't say we were mortal enemies in New York,
[2:58] Speaker 3: but we were not friends. We both did Broadway shows
[3:01] Speaker 3: in our 20s, and then we both moved to L.A.
[3:03] Speaker 4: Because we were like, f * * * Broadway.
[3:04] Speaker 1: We're better than this.
[3:05] Speaker 4: We want to do bigger and better things.
[3:07] Speaker 2: We're going to be stars.
[3:08] Speaker 4: Lost everything in L.A.
[3:09] Speaker 1: Yeah. I worked at Lisa Vanderpump's restaurant, which I wanted
[3:13] Speaker 1: to f * * * ing kill myself.
[3:14] Speaker 2: Which one? Which one?
[3:16] Speaker 1: I worked at... I opened Pump. I was like her
[3:18] Speaker 1: right-hand man. It was crazy.
[3:20] Speaker 2: Pump is the worst. I have eaten there every time
[3:23] Speaker 2: I go to LA. She's always there.
[3:25] Speaker 1: It's gone. It's gone. She's always there, sitting in the middle. Yeah,
[3:28] Speaker 1: it was crazy.
[3:29] Speaker 2: You worked at Pump? Oh my.
[3:32] Speaker 6: I think I went to the opening of Pump with
[3:34] Speaker 6: my ex, so I reckon you would have been there.
[3:36] Speaker 1: Well, I was there.
[3:37] Speaker 2: Oh my gosh.
[3:37] Speaker 1: I was there making... Swigging drinks.
[3:40] Speaker 4: Yeah, he really was.
[3:42] Speaker 3: And I was a personal assistant to a man who
[3:44] Speaker 3: had compulsively like face scratching disorder. He would compulsively scratch
[3:48] Speaker 3: his face. Anyway, we wound up working in a dinner theater.
[3:51] Speaker 6: And here we are.
[3:51] Speaker 4: And here we are.
[3:52] Speaker 3: We met like formally doing dinner theater in Los Angeles
[3:55] Speaker 3: with Broken Dreams and then created Titanic.
[3:57] Speaker 6: When you say dinner theater, you're serving food and singing
[4:00] Speaker 6: at the same time?
[4:01] Speaker 1: No, but Marla's done that in every iteration that she
[4:04] Speaker 1: could possibly do.
[4:05] Speaker 4: That is true.
[4:06] Speaker 6: She always works at a singing establishment, which is funny
[4:09] Speaker 6: because she wants to kill herself when she sings.
[4:10] Speaker 1: So I'm like, why would you do this to yourself?
[4:12] Speaker 1: You're sick.
[4:13] Speaker 4: It's my only skill.
[4:14] Speaker 6: Yeah, I forced you at like parties to try and
[4:17] Speaker 6: sing and you're one that actually, you're hard to break.
[4:19] Speaker 2: You just don't do it.
[4:20] Speaker 1: Joel, it's so nice to meet you.
[4:21] Speaker 2: So lovely to meet you. Congratulations.
[4:23] Speaker 6: I watch all, like, the stuff. I, like, comment as
[4:25] Speaker 6: well on, like, the official Titanic account.
[4:27] Speaker 2: Like, slay. I know.
[4:30] Speaker 1: We're so gross. But, hey, we love you.
[4:32] Speaker 6: Thanks.
[4:32] Speaker 1: Thank you.
[4:32] Speaker 2: No, thank you.
[4:33] Speaker 1: Well, we'll see you soon, I hope.
[4:35] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[4:35] Speaker 1: I'm going to go eat this chicken.
[4:37] Speaker 4: Chicken. It smells like chicken in here.
[4:38] Speaker 3: Yep.
[4:38] Speaker 2: God, it's glamorous.
[4:40] Speaker 1: All right.
[4:40] Speaker 2: Bye.
[4:41] Speaker 1: Bye.
[4:42] Speaker 5: The Joel Gracie Show.
[4:44] Speaker 2: So, Titanic.
[4:45] Speaker 6: Describe it for people that don't know.
[4:47] Speaker 3: So basically, Celine Dion believed she was on the Titanic
[4:50] Speaker 3: with Jack and Rose, and she uses her eyes and
[4:52] Speaker 3: her songs to narrate the story.
[4:54] Speaker 4: So she's basically like, I was on the ship, girlfriend.
[4:56] Speaker 3: And everyone's like, no, Celine Dion, you're just saying the
[4:59] Speaker 3: theme song to the movie.
[5:00] Speaker 4: You weren't actually on the Titanic. And she's like, no, no, no,
[5:02] Speaker 4: go with me.
[5:02] Speaker 1: I know the story.
[5:04] Speaker 4: And that's how it starts.
[5:06] Speaker 3: It's basically like a wild conspiracy theory. And because Celine
[5:09] Speaker 3: Dion is so joyous and kooky crazy and of her
[5:13] Speaker 3: own world almost, she seems like she lives on her
[5:17] Speaker 3: own beautiful planet and we're just all blessed to be
[5:20] Speaker 3: in her presence.
[5:21] Speaker 4: You just kind of go with her.
[5:22] Speaker 3: So it is wildly tangential. It is a roller coaster.
[5:27] Speaker 3: It is really nothing like the Titanic at all.
[5:29] Speaker 4: It's just Celine Dion's interpretation. And it's using all of
[5:32] Speaker 4: her fierce songs. So it's like, It's the best thing
[5:35] Speaker 4: that you'll ever see in the funniest book on Broadway.
[5:37] Speaker 4: Let me tell you.
[5:38] Speaker 2: No, it genuinely is. Even my mid-70s parents saw it
[5:40] Speaker 2: in the West End the other night. They loved it.
[5:43] Speaker 2: And then I said, oh, my friend wrote it. She
[5:45] Speaker 2: plays Celine. And mom was like, well, the.
[5:48] Speaker 6: Girl we saw, she is Celine. She looks like that
[5:52] Speaker 6: can't be possible because the girl we saw.
[5:53] Speaker 1: She does.
[5:54] Speaker 2: Yeah, I know she does. But I was like, yeah,
[5:55] Speaker 2: but Marla does too, mom. And she wrote it. And
[5:57] Speaker 2: mom's like, oh, well, I'll have to wait and see.
[5:59] Speaker 2: My mom, she wrote it. She wrote it. Never wrong,
[6:03] Speaker 2: that woman.
[6:03] Speaker 4: I know, but, you know, everyone has their own favorite alphabet.
[6:06] Speaker 4: Everyone has their own. I mean, the good news is
[6:08] Speaker 4: that we have so many Celine's in so many countries.
[6:10] Speaker 4: You know, it's kind of, it has its own kind.
[6:12] Speaker 3: Of Hamilton-like trajectory where it's all over the world that
[6:15] Speaker 3: you can just kind of pick and choose your own
[6:17] Speaker 3: favorite Celine.
[6:17] Speaker 4: You know, everyone thought it was so small and so
[6:19] Speaker 4: campy and so niche. And finally.
[6:22] Speaker 1: It is and it isn't.
[6:23] Speaker 4: It is and it... Exactly. It is and it isn't.
[6:25] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[6:26] Speaker 4: It's based off of.
[6:27] Speaker 3: Two incredible pre-existing IPs that everyone knows, which is Celine
[6:32] Speaker 3: Dion and Titanic. But at the same time, it has
[6:34] Speaker 3: this campy kind of irreverent queer spin because we wrote it.
[6:38] Speaker 3: The point is, a stroke of good luck happened last
[6:40] Speaker 3: year where we were able to come to the St.
[6:42] Speaker 3: James for a limited amount of time and we took it.
[6:45] Speaker 3: And I feel like it's just been the most wonderful
[6:49] Speaker 3: icing on this 10-year cake to finally be here on Broadway,
[6:53] Speaker 3: you know, having audiences who haven't seen it which is
[6:57] Speaker 3: crazy to me, but there are so many people who
[6:58] Speaker 3: haven't seen it and just come and laugh with us
[7:00] Speaker 3: for this limited run. I just feel like this has
[7:03] Speaker 3: been the best victory lap and the best gift for
[7:05] Speaker 3: the show after, you know, struggling to push it up
[7:08] Speaker 3: this hill for so long.
[7:13] Speaker 6: And I'm here with star and co-creator of one of
[7:15] Speaker 6: my favourite musicals, which is taking Broadway by storm right now, Titanic,
[7:20] Speaker 6: which is a story of Celine Dion as if she
[7:23] Speaker 6: were on the Titanic and told the story through her eyes, essentially.
[7:27] Speaker 6: I've got to ask, has Celine actually seen it?
[7:30] Speaker 3: She has not seen it because she's a very busy
[7:33] Speaker 3: international diva and her concert is coming out soon. But
[7:37] Speaker 3: her sister Claudette, one of her sisters saw it in Montreal.
[7:41] Speaker 4: Yeah. And she just loved it.
[7:42] Speaker 3: And every single person in Celine's camp, her backup dancers,
[7:45] Speaker 3: her makeup artists, her physician from Canada. I mean, anyone
[7:48] Speaker 3: that's her music lawyers, people who have written her songs, they.
[7:52] Speaker 4: Have all come and they just say the same thing,
[7:54] Speaker 4: that she would love it. And that makes me so
[7:56] Speaker 4: happy because... Really, it's just a love letter to Celine Dion.
[8:01] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[8:02] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[8:02] Speaker 6: When I saw her in Melbourne, like five, six years ago,
[8:06] Speaker 6: she did like a 20 minute stand up set about
[8:09] Speaker 6: how hot she finds Ryan Reynolds.
[8:12] Speaker 2: And then she loves Ryan Reynolds.
[8:15] Speaker 4: Loves Ryan Reynolds.
[8:16] Speaker 2: And then she forgot the lyrics to My Heart Will
[8:18] Speaker 2: Go On.
[8:20] Speaker 4: Oh, great.
[8:21] Speaker 2: And I was like, this is what I'm paying for.
[8:23] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[8:24] Speaker 4: I mean, I saw her.
[8:25] Speaker 3: In Vegas and I was in the last row, like
[8:28] Speaker 3: nosebleed seats. This was 10 years ago and it's the
[8:30] Speaker 3: best singing I've ever heard in my life. And this
[8:31] Speaker 3: was before the idea of Titanic even started.
[8:34] Speaker 4: But you're right. It was a 20. I think that
[8:36] Speaker 4: was Ryan Reynolds stand.
[8:37] Speaker 2: Up in my Vegas set as well.
[8:39] Speaker 1: It's a goal.
[8:39] Speaker 2: It's a tight 20.
[8:40] Speaker 1: It's like universal. Yeah.
[8:41] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[8:42] Speaker 1: Tried and true.
[8:42] Speaker 4: She knows it's going to work.
[8:43] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[8:44] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[8:46] Speaker 6: And then you're like a Tony Award nominee for this role.
[8:50] Speaker 6: And then your banter with Pink.
[8:52] Speaker 2: So funny. Like Pink. I feel like Pink gets it.
[8:54] Speaker 4: Pink totally gets it. And she was like such a dream.
[8:57] Speaker 4: So chill.
[8:58] Speaker 3: I could not believe. I didn't realize that Tony's like
[9:01] Speaker 3: what they make you do. You do everything the day of.
[9:04] Speaker 3: You tech it the day of.
[9:05] Speaker 2: The day of?
[9:06] Speaker 4: The day. Like you have a couple of rehearsals, but
[9:08] Speaker 4: like you just have one chance to do it. And
[9:10] Speaker 4: then boom, it's live. So we had a couple of rehearsals.
[9:14] Speaker 3: But I mean, like it was crazy. So the fact
[9:16] Speaker 3: that Pink was like so calm.
[9:18] Speaker 4: So chill. Her voice is so sick.
[9:21] Speaker 3: Like, I don't know. I just became like an instant
[9:23] Speaker 3: Pink fan again. Like a resurgent Pink fan.
[9:25] Speaker 2: Because you know she's huge here in Australia.
[9:27] Speaker 6: Like, her biggest market is Australia.
[9:30] Speaker 2: We love Pink.
[9:31] Speaker 1: Really?
[9:31] Speaker 2: Yes.
[9:33] Speaker 4: I mean, yeah.
[9:34] Speaker 3: But you guys have, your voice is the best. The
[9:36] Speaker 3: voice in Australia is the best of all the voices.
[9:38] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
[9:40] Speaker 4: The singers from The Voice in Australia.
[9:43] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[9:44] Speaker 1: Really?
[9:44] Speaker 4: Oh, I've seen.
[9:45] Speaker 5: Oh.
[9:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[9:46] Speaker 4: So that doesn't surprise me. They just, you guys love
[9:48] Speaker 4: great singers.
[9:49] Speaker 5: Oh. This is The Joel Creasy Show.
[9:52] Speaker 6: Marla, it's so cool to say you're my mate, but
[9:54] Speaker 6: you're backstage right now about to go on stage in
[9:58] Speaker 6: a Broadway show because it's... nearly showtime.
[10:01] Speaker 4: So I'm actually in my prep right now and then
[10:02] Speaker 4: they'll put my wig on.
[10:04] Speaker 3: I know.
[10:04] Speaker 4: We have 15 minutes until half hour. So I usually
[10:07] Speaker 4: get here. I'm like old school. Like I get here.
[10:10] Speaker 1: Not old school.
[10:10] Speaker 3: I'm just like so regimented. I get here 90 minutes before.
[10:13] Speaker 3: I got to do my warm up.
[10:15] Speaker 4: I got to put my makeup on. I'm watching Bravo
[10:17] Speaker 4: as that's happening. That's like my new routine.
[10:19] Speaker 2: I know you love Bravo.
[10:19] Speaker 3: So I'm currently watching Next. I love Bravo. So I'm
[10:22] Speaker 3: currently watching Next Gen. which is like an offshoot of
[10:24] Speaker 3: an offshoot. It's like the show that you watch when
[10:27] Speaker 3: you've run out of all the other Bravo shows to watch.
[10:29] Speaker 3: You're like, well, I guess I'll just watch Next Gen NYC.
[10:32] Speaker 3: So put on my makeup, warm up, and then I
[10:34] Speaker 3: think about, there's an improv section in our show.
[10:37] Speaker 4: For those people who have not seen it, which I
[10:39] Speaker 4: know is wild. How does Titanic have an improv section?
[10:41] Speaker 4: That sounds absolutely crazy. But it is one of the
[10:45] Speaker 4: things that makes the show so exciting.
[10:46] Speaker 3: So I think about what I can do in my
[10:49] Speaker 3: improv section for the night. Which is, it's very, very
[10:54] Speaker 3: taxing to come up with something new eight times a week,
[10:55] Speaker 3: let me tell you.
[10:57] Speaker 6: Yeah, I was thinking, do all the Celine's around the
[10:59] Speaker 6: world do it like brand new every night?
[11:02] Speaker 5: No, no, no, no.
[11:03] Speaker 4: I have written like 10 for them to rotate from.
[11:05] Speaker 4: Some of them just come up with one and they
[11:07] Speaker 4: just do their one. And I'm actually happy about that.
[11:10] Speaker 4: I'm fine about that. I don't want to give somebody
[11:12] Speaker 4: the pressure to.
[11:13] Speaker 3: Have to come up with like, it's like live comedy.
[11:15] Speaker 3: Like sometimes, you know what it's like. It's like sometimes
[11:18] Speaker 3: it's gangbusters and sometimes you fall flat on your face.
[11:21] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[11:22] Speaker 3: But. The good news is, for me, is that's the
[11:25] Speaker 3: only time of the show that I'm kind to myself.
[11:27] Speaker 4: And I'm like, well, you know what? If it didn't land,
[11:29] Speaker 4: I always have tomorrow.
[11:30] Speaker 2: Yes.
[11:30] Speaker 4: Whereas if I crack or if I'm flat on a note,
[11:32] Speaker 4: I'm like, well, it's time to jump off a bridge.
[11:34] Speaker 2: And bury myself alive. I know the pressure. Well, yeah,
[11:37] Speaker 2: I worked with Countess Luan earlier this year. She was here.
[11:40] Speaker 6: And I was hosting her in Sydney. And we were
[11:42] Speaker 6: sharing a dressing room. And this is where I went, oh,
[11:44] Speaker 6: you're in on the joke.
[11:45] Speaker 1: You get it.
[11:46] Speaker 6: Because I said to her, hey, do you want me
[11:47] Speaker 6: to leave so you can warm up?
[11:49] Speaker 2: And she just looked at me and just went, please.
[11:52] Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, you get it. You totally
[11:55] Speaker 2: get it.
[11:55] Speaker 6: You know it's just a joke and you're just having
[11:58] Speaker 6: a good time.
[11:59] Speaker 4: Well, and also, like, what do you think a warm-up
[12:01] Speaker 4: is for her? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[12:05] Speaker 2: Well, hey, you've got a show to do. I'm going
[12:08] Speaker 2: to let you go. When are you going to come
[12:09] Speaker 2: back to Australia?
[12:11] Speaker 4: You know, well, if Titanic goes back to Australia, I'm coming.
[12:15] Speaker 4: I couldn't go last time to Sydney, but I'm dying
[12:17] Speaker 4: to go back.
[12:18] Speaker 2: Please, because I want to play Ruth. Because I might
[12:19] Speaker 2: not have, like, some money. I really want to play Ruth.
[12:21] Speaker 3: Oh, I know. I literally pitched you to them and
[12:25] Speaker 3: I was like, there's this guy. He's a very famous
[12:27] Speaker 3: comedian in Australia and he's got a radio show. But
[12:30] Speaker 3: apparently they want to take it to Melbourne. I don't know.
[12:32] Speaker 4: I don't know what's going to happen with it.
