[0:13] Speaker 1: and olive, so he's primed and ready to go.
[0:15] Speaker 2: I'm a working show gal.
[0:17] Speaker 3: Get ready. It's Joel Creasy, Joe.
[0:23] Speaker 1: Joe Shows.
[0:28] Speaker 4: It is midday on a Friday. How good does that feel?
[0:32] Speaker 4: The whole weekend is ahead of us. Welcome to the
[0:36] Speaker 4: Joel Creasy Show coming up today. I'm chatting to comedy legend.
[0:40] Speaker 4: I know the word legend is going around, but this
[0:42] Speaker 4: is very appropriate. Irish comedian mister Jim Owen is here
[0:46] Speaker 4: for the entire show.
[0:48] Speaker 2: But let's kick off our Friday lunch hour with Joel.
[0:51] Speaker 4: Takes control of our first song, and we're rather proud
[0:54] Speaker 4: of this one. Stay with me. It's kin Katral Samantha.
[0:58] Speaker 4: It's her birthday today, turning seventy. Happy birthday, Kim Katrol,
[1:03] Speaker 4: which of course made me think of Blue Contril, so
[1:07] Speaker 4: I chose my favorite slash only song I know of theirs.
[1:10] Speaker 4: It's hit Him Up Style in Brackets Boots, great breakup
[1:14] Speaker 4: song on Nova.
[1:15] Speaker 2: Happy Birthday, Kim.
[1:16] Speaker 3: This is the Joel Greasy Show.
[1:18] Speaker 4: And we are joined in the studio by comedy legend
[1:21] Speaker 4: Jim Owen. His show Bally Who is on tour right
[1:25] Speaker 4: now around Australia. Tickets in info at Jim Owen dot com. Hey,
[1:30] Speaker 4: I just want to point out that I have read
[1:32] Speaker 4: your full press release, because at the release you have,
[1:35] Speaker 4: Jim Owen says, does anyone ever read these things?
[1:38] Speaker 1: Anyway?
[1:39] Speaker 2: I'm sure they don't.
[1:40] Speaker 4: If you got this far, then well done you.
[1:43] Speaker 1: You probably wanted the last line you haven't read it.
[1:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, and let me just have a look at the
[1:47] Speaker 2: other No. I highlighted the Royal Variety performance.
[1:51] Speaker 1: What's that?
[1:51] Speaker 2: What's that like to do?
[1:53] Speaker 1: Quite nerve racking? Yeah, and long and ridiculously long. Yeah.
[1:57] Speaker 1: I was on after Barry manlous I'm good, okay, And
[2:01] Speaker 1: at the end of his bit, which was a medley
[2:03] Speaker 1: of all his big hits, he just does this little
[2:05] Speaker 1: skip to the front of the stage. He goes, I'm
[2:07] Speaker 1: going to have to do that again. This is like
[2:11] Speaker 1: maybe two or forty five minutes into it, and oh
[2:17] Speaker 1: but it went really well. And if you looked at
[2:20] Speaker 1: that bill you would think there's way too many comics,
[2:23] Speaker 1: because every time there's just there's ten comics. So every ten.
[2:26] Speaker 1: There's a number a comic. But the idea for the
[2:29] Speaker 1: comic is that they go down stage and the back
[2:32] Speaker 1: curtain comes in right and they strike Yeah, Barry Man
[2:37] Speaker 1: look drum hard.
[2:38] Speaker 2: To extrake Barry mantal life place and.
[2:40] Speaker 1: Then I could hear all the bang and going on
[2:42] Speaker 1: by him. Curtain comes up and it's singing in the
[2:45] Speaker 1: rain with the full you know, little water coming down.
[2:51] Speaker 1: But yeah, nice experience. Shit, you know it used to
[2:55] Speaker 1: be a king maker of that show. Like if you
[2:56] Speaker 1: got on that show and you did well, you that
[3:00] Speaker 1: would launch your career. But you know those shows just
[3:03] Speaker 1: don't like Apollo Apollo. That used to be a king maker,
[3:07] Speaker 1: I know.
[3:09] Speaker 4: I thought that's like as a very recently. Yeah, that
[3:12] Speaker 4: was always on my dream list to do. I never
[3:14] Speaker 4: got to do it. I was so bummed when I
[3:16] Speaker 4: saw that. When did you do it?
[3:17] Speaker 1: I did it three times?
[3:20] Speaker 2: What royal was at the Royal Variety performance?
[3:22] Speaker 1: You did was one?
[3:23] Speaker 2: I was gonna.
[3:24] Speaker 1: Say, Prince Andrew, No pity it was Prince Aunt.
[3:39] Speaker 4: Oh well, she goes to everything. She's the busiest Royal.
[3:42] Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, I've watched that documentary The Crown. I
[3:45] Speaker 4: seem to quite like man, Yeah, do you get restrictions
[3:49] Speaker 4: on what you can say at the royal riety?
[3:50] Speaker 2: Like you are you the law to swear.
[3:54] Speaker 1: No? We can't swear no and you have to you
[3:57] Speaker 1: have to not actually you know, to do that curtsy
[4:01] Speaker 1: the queen, member of the royal.
[4:03] Speaker 2: Family, curibow or Curtsey.
[4:05] Speaker 1: You just have to do acknowledgement. What did you think.
[4:14] Speaker 2: Singing on the rain? Singing the rains coming up?
[4:16] Speaker 3: Don't worry about the Joel Creasy show.
[4:18] Speaker 2: And I'm having a blast. Legend of comedy. Jim Marline
[4:21] Speaker 2: is here. And I remember the first time we met.
[4:24] Speaker 4: We were doing and I mentioned this to you when
[4:26] Speaker 4: I saw you the other night, and I'm so glad
[4:28] Speaker 4: you'd forgotten. We were doing one of those gigs just before,
[4:32] Speaker 4: like a comedy festival gala, and everyone was on sort
[4:35] Speaker 4: of trying out the material, and I had just finished
[4:38] Speaker 4: and you just arrived and I was putting on my
[4:40] Speaker 4: jacket backstage and I was putting my arm through and
[4:43] Speaker 4: you were just behind me, and I fully punched you
[4:45] Speaker 4: in the face. And I was quite early on in comedy.
[4:48] Speaker 4: I was, oh my god, I've just punched you, moan
[4:49] Speaker 4: in the face and we've never met before.
[4:52] Speaker 1: Did you go to Edinburgh?
[4:54] Speaker 2: I've done it once and I hated it.
[4:57] Speaker 1: Was it with Jewel Room. Remember you supported Jillan Rivers.
[5:02] Speaker 2: I went, he was there.
[5:03] Speaker 4: I went the year after she passed or the year
[5:06] Speaker 4: she did pass right, Yeah, because I was with her.
[5:09] Speaker 2: For a few years.
[5:10] Speaker 1: Right.
[5:10] Speaker 4: She taught me the comedy hack. She taught me even
[5:13] Speaker 4: at eighty one. When I was working with her. She'd
[5:14] Speaker 4: be on her hands and knees with black cardboard and
[5:17] Speaker 4: a white pen and she'd write her step list out
[5:20] Speaker 4: big on that and then you'd lie on this on
[5:22] Speaker 4: the stage, which is also black, and then no one
[5:25] Speaker 4: can see it. You could just see the white riding.
[5:27] Speaker 4: I still do that way.
[5:28] Speaker 1: I've done chalk on the stage. When I went to Edinburgh,
[5:31] Speaker 1: I did just wait chalk.
[5:33] Speaker 2: That's smart.
[5:34] Speaker 1: You know, different process.
[5:36] Speaker 4: So I know I have to move over here if
[5:39] Speaker 4: I want to know what the Yeah, because there's nothing more. Obviously,
[5:44] Speaker 4: when you've got on your stool and you're like taking
[5:45] Speaker 4: a long slip of water and you're like, hang on, no,
[5:47] Speaker 4: I'm just taking a really long That's how I drink
[5:51] Speaker 4: water because you do something that I cannot do. But
[5:54] Speaker 4: I admire and other comedians you do proper observational comedy?
[6:00] Speaker 2: How do you do that?
[6:01] Speaker 4: Because I cannot do that. I always think, oh, that's funny.
[6:05] Speaker 1: And you know, I used to do it more, but
[6:06] Speaker 1: I've started scrolling on my phone, and scrolling just destroyge creativity.
[6:12] Speaker 1: I think, you know you're you're in the zone. But
[6:14] Speaker 1: I used to find that if I shot long enough,
[6:17] Speaker 1: if you go looking for a joke, they just don't
[6:19] Speaker 1: turn up. But if you find that you're watching something
[6:22] Speaker 1: and then you like you're the first person to see
[6:25] Speaker 1: the joke, you don't write the joke. You go thought,
[6:28] Speaker 1: then you go, oh yeah, so I kind of let
[6:32] Speaker 1: it happen. And then when you find yourself laughing at something,
[6:36] Speaker 1: you go, right, what is it that I'm laughing? And
[6:38] Speaker 1: can I convey that? And the best ones are the
[6:42] Speaker 1: things that are right in front of you there, you know,
[6:46] Speaker 1: and if no one else is talking about it, then
[6:48] Speaker 1: you feel you know, not only is a good joke,
[6:51] Speaker 1: but it's a unique topic.
[6:53] Speaker 4: That's why my observational comedy because it's so far from
[6:56] Speaker 4: what I do. But I love that sort of watching
[6:57] Speaker 4: comedy where you can nudg your friend and be like.
[7:00] Speaker 2: We do that. It's just the most pure form of comedy.
[7:02] Speaker 1: But the worst one for me is when I've got
[7:04] Speaker 1: something that's not gonna work. They're not gonna get there,
[7:07] Speaker 1: and then someone else does it. Oh my god, I'm
[7:11] Speaker 1: thinking I've been sitting that. Oh you idiot.
[7:15] Speaker 4: Yeah, I've overthought that one, because you like you are
[7:19] Speaker 4: like always on the right. I mean, you've got shows
[7:21] Speaker 4: coming up Nissa, Barron Bay, Southern Barrel, Goldburn, Cheeka and Shepherdon.
[7:26] Speaker 2: How many?
[7:27] Speaker 1: And then I go to the UK for five weeks
[7:29] Speaker 1: and I can do Nainty gig and then if I
[7:31] Speaker 1: go above the movement a different types of record.
[7:43] Speaker 3: Joe, Yes, just go crazy.
[7:46] Speaker 4: And I'm here with comedian Jim Owen. Janielle Kerney who
[7:50] Speaker 4: tours with you Who and Me? Yeah, and she works
[7:54] Speaker 4: on all my shows. She does a spot on this
[7:55] Speaker 4: show on Tuesdays. I told me to ask you about
[7:58] Speaker 4: two things about live A.
[8:01] Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to live it. Yeah. Nineteen eighty five, Oh.
[8:05] Speaker 4: My god, who was on that line up again? It
[8:07] Speaker 4: was just like everyone insand yeah, everyone right city.
[8:11] Speaker 1: I think it was the first part because it was
[8:13] Speaker 1: an old day thing and I was living in London.
[8:17] Speaker 1: I just moved to London. I was eighteen or nineteen,
[8:20] Speaker 1: and then a couple of friends and one of them's
[8:24] Speaker 1: father worked at a newspaper, so he got the tickets
[8:27] Speaker 1: and he goes, would you be going, I've got three tickets?
[8:30] Speaker 1: Who were thinking to come over? I was in a bed,
[8:33] Speaker 1: shit and they should go to sleep the floor and
[8:35] Speaker 1: it's twenty five quick. I was like, twenty five quick,
[8:39] Speaker 1: let me think about that, Let me think about that.
[8:42] Speaker 1: So a real good thing about it, Let's do it. Yeah. Anyway,
[8:46] Speaker 1: they came over and they were a wee bit older
[8:49] Speaker 1: than me, and then they were still talking to me
[8:51] Speaker 1: like they were like like I was fifteen. So I
[8:54] Speaker 1: got kind of annoyed with them.
[8:55] Speaker 2: Yeah I get that, and I'm having this.
[8:59] Speaker 1: And they were standing the bike. I came out of
[9:01] Speaker 1: the side. It was rammed the stands. You can just
[9:04] Speaker 1: wander done because we were in early there's no there
[9:07] Speaker 1: were no designated seats. Wow. So but they're doing this
[9:11] Speaker 1: at the bank, you sure annoying me? So I took
[9:16] Speaker 1: off one shoulder getting passed, excuse me, and I got
[9:24] Speaker 1: very close to the front and there was just big
[9:27] Speaker 1: big gap, laughing perfect going there, and then I realized
[9:31] Speaker 1: why there was a big gap. This guy had a
[9:33] Speaker 1: kid and his shoulders with a knappy. And then I
[9:48] Speaker 1: looked everyone everyone, everyone laughed. Everyone's laughing at you because
[9:51] Speaker 1: they've all done it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's his turn.
[9:57] Speaker 1: That's right, that's what the preddy burgery was doing. The kid.
[10:07] Speaker 1: But I know that wasn't the very front. And then
[10:09] Speaker 1: I spent a little bit longer getting to the front,
[10:13] Speaker 1: and I stayed there the whole entire day, right up
[10:16] Speaker 1: against the rails, and I had a pair of pumps
[10:19] Speaker 1: on each kind of shaler shoes and no socks, and
[10:22] Speaker 1: they kind of stunk. People kind of gave me. I
[10:24] Speaker 1: had a little bit of this little thing we were standing.
[10:34] Speaker 1: Then at that point they crossed the Philadelphia because it
[10:38] Speaker 1: was on Philadelphia. Yeah, it would be interrupted, you know,
[10:43] Speaker 1: the flow of the evening was being interrupted with watching
[10:47] Speaker 1: this these big screens. But it was a point where
[10:49] Speaker 1: I realized the world and the distance between places became
[10:53] Speaker 1: a lot smaller because Phil Collins was on. And then
[10:56] Speaker 1: as he was on stage, Concord flew over the stadium
[11:00] Speaker 1: and kind of bank side, which wow, did that right
[11:04] Speaker 1: right right just over the top of the stadium and
[11:08] Speaker 1: then he went on Concord flew to Philadelphia, and then
[11:12] Speaker 1: they were showing the telecast and he's just playing drums
[11:14] Speaker 1: at this band. You go, I would I saw him
[11:17] Speaker 1: to go right here, right there, and then that really
[11:20] Speaker 1: kind of had a bizarre effect on me.
[11:24] Speaker 3: This is the Joel Crazy show.
[11:26] Speaker 4: We've been catching up with, the ever so hilarious comedy legend.
[11:29] Speaker 4: Jim and linked to Prince as well.
[11:32] Speaker 1: Yeah. Well I worked at concerts in London and played
[11:37] Speaker 1: Wembley six nights in a row, and I worked every
[11:40] Speaker 1: one of them really in the moshpit. And well you're
[11:44] Speaker 1: doing in thespit well doing security you know, well, you
[11:49] Speaker 1: know you showed people to their seats and then you
[11:52] Speaker 1: just moved into that area.
[11:54] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[11:54] Speaker 1: Cool. It was like a religious experience. Yeah, Like I
[11:59] Speaker 1: really didn't think that much of Prince because the British
[12:02] Speaker 1: press had mocked him. But when he he could dance
[12:06] Speaker 1: like he could, he was such an amazing dancer. And
[12:09] Speaker 1: then he did the sound check, so he got on
[12:11] Speaker 1: the drums and so and so do raspberry bridge work
[12:19] Speaker 1: with part time and bibles but boom boom and then
[12:26] Speaker 1: over to the keyboard and everybody want to hear and
[12:30] Speaker 1: he just did all his song and then did the
[12:32] Speaker 1: sound check. That's so cool, and then did the show.
[12:35] Speaker 1: And that's the best concert I've ever been here.
[12:38] Speaker 2: Yeah, and he saw six times.
[12:41] Speaker 4: Because I always thinking I've got like someone doing my
[12:43] Speaker 4: you know, sound and stuff for a show that I'm
[12:45] Speaker 4: doing for weeks on NAIM.
[12:47] Speaker 2: Poor person. Yeah, sing this every night.
[12:50] Speaker 4: And when I hear someone says, oh, your tech was laughing,
[12:53] Speaker 4: that's a fine compliment.
[12:55] Speaker 1: You know. When I go and see a show, I
[12:57] Speaker 1: always look over the tech to.
[12:58] Speaker 2: See the giveaway, isn't it. Yeah, if they're on their fine.
[13:01] Speaker 1: To see how much I living or how chaotic the
[13:03] Speaker 1: show was. Yeah.
[13:04] Speaker 2: Have you ever had any horror corporate?
[13:06] Speaker 1: Corporate?
[13:07] Speaker 2: Any horror one?
[13:08] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh god? I got one for the Port
[13:10] Speaker 1: Melburne Cricket Club, right and absolutely die. I did my
[13:16] Speaker 1: first joke, which is your best joke, and it died.
[13:19] Speaker 1: The last joke, which is your second best joke. You
[13:23] Speaker 1: want to finish on a laugh that day, and then
[13:26] Speaker 1: I thought I'm in trouble here. Then I did Bob's act.
[13:34] Speaker 1: I did Bob Pregnant and this guy you walk. I
[13:37] Speaker 1: had to tell Bob the next day he died and.
[13:41] Speaker 2: He doesn't get that. He doesn't get paid.
[13:44] Speaker 1: They didn't want to pay me either, like those other things.
[13:46] Speaker 4: Wait, they were paying after they say yeah, they wouldn't
[13:49] Speaker 4: they wouldn't pay, but there was no backstage.
[13:53] Speaker 1: I went into the toilet and then everyone that was
[13:56] Speaker 1: just what. They're going to the toilet and they're going, jeez,
[13:59] Speaker 1: no than the see me shitting there.
[14:08] Speaker 2: That is so brutal.
[14:10] Speaker 4: There, Jimal and you're an absolute legend. Thank you so
[14:15] Speaker 4: much for coming in. I saw appreciate.
[14:17] Speaker 1: We didn't talk too much about comedy, and we talked
[14:19] Speaker 1: to it's fascinating.
[14:21] Speaker 2: We spoke about Prince.
[14:23] Speaker 1: And Queen, the Royal family, Queen, the Royal family, we
[14:27] Speaker 1: covered it.
[14:28] Speaker 2: Thank you so much.
[14:29] Speaker 1: Thank you, George an example Angel.
