Two comedians walk into a club; both are self-conscious about dancing and head straight to the smokers' area despite not smoking. Comedian Danielle Walker joins the show to talk about her love of Taskmaster and how happy she’d be doing tasks every day of her life. Mel Tracina also pops in to discuss Karl Stefanovic’s rogue career pivot into… stand-up comedy?! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[0:02] Speaker 1: It's now time to welcome the pepres rints and part
[0:08] Speaker 1: time Saduko expert. Here we go. He's had full black coffees.
[0:12] Speaker 2: I'm half an olive, so he's primed and ready to go.
[0:15] Speaker 1: I'm a working show gal.
[0:17] Speaker 2: Get ready. Yes, it's Joe Creasy, Joelsy with the Joe
[0:24] Speaker 2: Clasi Shows.
[0:28] Speaker 1: It's been almost twenty four hours since we last spoke.
[0:31] Speaker 1: I've missed you. Welcome to the Joel Creasy Show. As
[0:34] Speaker 1: a result, to make up for my absence, I am
[0:38] Speaker 1: chatting to the hilarious Danielle Walker, who you are gonna love. Also,
[0:42] Speaker 1: she's one of my favorite comedians. She hails from Townsville
[0:46] Speaker 1: or the Bush as she calls it. She won Taskmaster
[0:49] Speaker 1: season one. I wonder what that feels like. And she's
[0:51] Speaker 1: a bloody hilarious But let's kick off our Wednesday lunchtime.
[0:55] Speaker 1: He's a little bit of Oh she's so brat Charlie
[0:58] Speaker 1: xxx Apple.
[1:01] Speaker 2: This is the Joel Greasy Show.
[1:03] Speaker 1: We are joined in the studio by comedian Danny L. Walker.
[1:06] Speaker 1: Make sure you catch her on stage with her bittersweet
[1:08] Speaker 1: to her around Australia. Find tickets and dates at dannyel
[1:11] Speaker 1: Walker dot com dot are you. It tickles me so
[1:13] Speaker 1: much when you mentioned that you're from the Bush, it
[1:15] Speaker 1: really makes me laugh.
[1:16] Speaker 3: Thank you.
[1:17] Speaker 4: Yeah, because you're you're from I mean, Perth isn't the bush,
[1:21] Speaker 4: but there's something a bit adjacent to it.
[1:24] Speaker 3: It's like isolation.
[1:25] Speaker 1: We have that, I mean Perth, you know, it's really nice,
[1:27] Speaker 1: but we still have that sort of you know, little
[1:30] Speaker 1: guy type mentality.
[1:32] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[1:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, and you've got to.
[1:34] Speaker 4: Be You've got to work out how to use your time.
[1:37] Speaker 4: Do you think they wouldn't have that much to do
[1:39] Speaker 4: all the time? No, so you'd get bored sometimes.
[1:42] Speaker 1: Back in the day, do people come up to you, Like,
[1:44] Speaker 1: what do people say to you when they recognize you?
[1:47] Speaker 2: Me?
[1:47] Speaker 4: Yeah, well I don't really click that people have recognized
[1:53] Speaker 4: me most of the time. Yeah, so if somebody's look
[1:56] Speaker 4: at me, I'll assume that I've just sort of got
[1:58] Speaker 4: something on my face or something. But like if they
[2:02] Speaker 4: do come up to me, they'll just say, are you
[2:04] Speaker 4: Danny L.
[2:05] Speaker 3: Walker? Yeah, that's what I get most of the time.
[2:07] Speaker 4: I think people are just confirming that it's not like
[2:10] Speaker 4: what's the word, Oh, it's a chople ganger.
[2:13] Speaker 1: A what ganger?
[2:14] Speaker 3: It's a trople gang.
[2:15] Speaker 4: It's a doppelganger, but like an ugly version, you know.
[2:19] Speaker 4: I was like, what if they're looking at my choppleganger
[2:21] Speaker 4: and then they come up to me and.
[2:22] Speaker 3: It's actually just me.
[2:24] Speaker 1: I've had someone say before, no offense, but you look
[2:27] Speaker 1: like Joe Creasy. No offense, offense taken. Yeah, why wouldn't you.
[2:32] Speaker 4: Just say you look like Joe Creasy?
[2:35] Speaker 1: Yeah, no offense?
[2:36] Speaker 3: Or has anybody ever told you this before?
[2:38] Speaker 1: Yeah? You know what's shared? Even again today it's like
[2:42] Speaker 1: my phone's listening you on Taskmaster squeezing the oranges. People
[2:46] Speaker 1: must recognize you from all the time.
[2:48] Speaker 4: I wonder that because I don't think I leave the
[2:50] Speaker 4: house that often to interact in public, Like I'm more
[2:55] Speaker 4: like out and about on my own or just hanging
[2:57] Speaker 4: out with friends, like I'm in the bush, you know,
[2:59] Speaker 4: I'm or something. I'm just out there in nature, yeah,
[3:04] Speaker 4: or like I'll get recognized.
[3:05] Speaker 3: In an op shop. That's usually where it's going on
[3:09] Speaker 3: for me.
[3:11] Speaker 4: Before I was able to make any money off comedy,
[3:13] Speaker 4: when it was really you know, when you're doing it
[3:15] Speaker 4: for the love of the craft.
[3:17] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you're just like, oh this is the best.
[3:20] Speaker 1: I'll go on whatever time you want me, wherever you
[3:23] Speaker 1: want me.
[3:24] Speaker 3: Yeah, And I got recognized in an uberpool and that
[3:28] Speaker 3: was that was the end of uberpools for me.
[3:37] Speaker 1: That's really funny.
[3:39] Speaker 4: I was like, I can't this is this is embarrassing
[3:42] Speaker 4: on now because then it's what's the worst bit is
[3:47] Speaker 4: it was it was a you know, it was another
[3:49] Speaker 4: passenger who hopped in and recognized my voice because we
[3:51] Speaker 4: all said hello. But there was also the driver and
[3:53] Speaker 4: another passenger. So then has to explain where they've seen
[3:58] Speaker 4: you other passengers and driver and they don't care. Yeah, wait,
[4:05] Speaker 4: no I don't know why she's in the verpool.
[4:06] Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm doing research. That is so funny. Please stick around, Dannielle.
[4:12] Speaker 1: I want to chat about task Master, which you did
[4:14] Speaker 1: very well on.
[4:15] Speaker 2: Up next the Joel Greasy Show.
[4:18] Speaker 1: Comedian Danielle Walkie is here. Who, Danielle, you won the
[4:22] Speaker 1: first season task Master. I've just well and truly lost
[4:25] Speaker 1: the fifth season. How much research had you done prior?
[4:29] Speaker 4: I was a humongous task Master fan. Yes, of like
[4:33] Speaker 4: the UK series, I was obsessed with it, like I
[4:36] Speaker 4: just got to be so fun just to do thass.
[4:39] Speaker 4: I guess when they came to casting Australia. Maybe they
[4:42] Speaker 4: had me in their mind or something. I don't know,
[4:45] Speaker 4: but I got it and I had the best time.
[4:47] Speaker 4: And whenever I hear about people having a having like
[4:49] Speaker 4: a not fun time filming task Master, I'm like, what
[4:52] Speaker 4: do you mean?
[4:53] Speaker 1: That's my dream?
[4:53] Speaker 4: If every day I woke up and went to a
[4:56] Speaker 4: thing where they're like, solve these problems, I would be
[4:59] Speaker 4: having the best life out of anybody.
[5:01] Speaker 1: Right, make all the mess you want, we'll clean up after.
[5:04] Speaker 1: I agree. I came so badly last and I loved
[5:08] Speaker 1: every second, but in fact I wish I appreciate it
[5:10] Speaker 1: more when I was there. Yeah, you know, I did
[5:13] Speaker 1: the Raw Comedy competition years ago and was I was beaten.
[5:16] Speaker 1: But you won right in twenty sixteen and your set
[5:19] Speaker 1: was like so good.
[5:20] Speaker 3: You do know what happened my first year of doing Raw.
[5:23] Speaker 4: I got to the state final and then my brain
[5:26] Speaker 4: just went I'm going to come back next year and
[5:29] Speaker 4: nobody is.
[5:30] Speaker 3: Going to stop me. I wish I still had that mentality.
[5:36] Speaker 3: I'm like, do you know how.
[5:37] Speaker 4: Much more successful I would be if I had this
[5:40] Speaker 4: drive me to like take over? I really just want
[5:45] Speaker 4: to enjoy my life.
[5:46] Speaker 1: Where was your raw where was your first one?
[5:48] Speaker 4: My first one Melbourne, because they don't have any heats
[5:50] Speaker 4: in towns or they didn't at the time, have any
[5:52] Speaker 4: heats in towns Fall.
[5:53] Speaker 3: I'm not sure if they do any more.
[5:54] Speaker 1: We said good gigs in Townsville.
[5:57] Speaker 4: I think Townswall is a wonderful place and everybody should
[5:59] Speaker 4: go there. And we've got a great little I don't
[6:01] Speaker 4: know the first leet towns Fall, beautiful weather every day
[6:05] Speaker 4: of the year mostly except for monsoon season. We've got
[6:09] Speaker 4: great food up there, Magnetica and the great beerrief.
[6:11] Speaker 3: I don't know what's not to love.
[6:13] Speaker 4: If it had more people so I could have more
[6:16] Speaker 4: of a career there, I'd be there.
[6:17] Speaker 1: What about is it called the Sovereign the gay bar?
[6:20] Speaker 1: Was that still there?
[6:20] Speaker 3: Or was it called the Sovereign?
[6:22] Speaker 1: It had a name that was did not sounds familiar.
[6:26] Speaker 4: I was never really a nightclub person. Like when I
[6:29] Speaker 4: first turned eighteen. I went to the nightclubs with the
[6:31] Speaker 4: friends a little bit, and then the nightclubs, you know,
[6:35] Speaker 4: everybody would dance, and I would just wait until somebody
[6:37] Speaker 4: wanted to go to a smoking area so I could chat.
[6:39] Speaker 1: Yeah, I said so much. I didn't smoke and I
[6:42] Speaker 1: spent so much time in smoking areas chat and also
[6:44] Speaker 1: then talking to randoms, hearing their life story.
[6:47] Speaker 4: And I mean, as much as I like to dance,
[6:48] Speaker 4: it was like not it didn't feel like you were
[6:50] Speaker 4: dancing to have fun when you were eighteen.
[6:52] Speaker 3: It felt like it felt like.
[6:53] Speaker 4: Everybody was dancing, and it was like everybody was looking
[6:56] Speaker 4: at everybody, And I was like, I don't like this feeling.
[6:59] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a It almost felt like a chore that
[7:01] Speaker 1: you had to do.
[7:03] Speaker 4: You know, they're saying, like, dance like no one's watching.
[7:05] Speaker 4: It's like it's hard to dance like nobody's watching when
[7:07] Speaker 4: it feels like everybody in the note club is literally watching.
[7:09] Speaker 1: And the more you think about it, the weedier dance.
[7:11] Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not And I'm not like rhythmic to begin with,
[7:17] Speaker 4: you know, like I'm quite jarring in my movements. Do
[7:21] Speaker 4: you know what was good today was I realized something
[7:24] Speaker 4: and it made me laugh, which is that because you know.
[7:26] Speaker 3: Do you sing to your dog?
[7:28] Speaker 1: Yeah?
[7:28] Speaker 4: Yeah, so I get right up in his face and
[7:30] Speaker 4: I'll sing to him. And I realized this point that
[7:33] Speaker 4: I don't have to sing good to him. He gives me,
[7:34] Speaker 4: he can give me this. He'll give me the same
[7:37] Speaker 4: face if I'm doing a purposefully horrific song, singing it
[7:42] Speaker 4: really bad.
[7:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, he's looking at me with those.
[7:44] Speaker 4: Same loving eyes, and I'm like, oh, you can't even
[7:46] Speaker 4: you can't even tell what I'm singing? Good? Why don't
[7:49] Speaker 4: I just try and sing so badly into your face?
[7:52] Speaker 3: That's gonna make me laugh so much.
[7:54] Speaker 1: I just love going with you, Danielle. I'm gonna play
[7:56] Speaker 1: some Cyril stumbling in up next. Let's talk about your
[8:00] Speaker 1: current stand up so which is no doubt solid gold
[8:03] Speaker 1: as perfume Joe. Yes, just god creasy, we're catching up
[8:09] Speaker 1: with Danielle Walker, fella comedian. Let's get nerdy. What are
[8:13] Speaker 1: you looking for, daniel Walker in your ideal comedy club?
[8:17] Speaker 4: I think my favorite comedy club is Basement in Melbourne.
[8:20] Speaker 4: I just like it because it's like it's low ceilings.
[8:22] Speaker 4: They're all packed in as close to you as possible,
[8:25] Speaker 4: and they're around you, so it's like there's more of
[8:28] Speaker 4: them than like, if the room's really long, it's hard
[8:32] Speaker 4: for all the energy to get all the way back.
[8:35] Speaker 3: Sometimes I agree.
[8:36] Speaker 1: I sometimes don't blame the people at the back for
[8:38] Speaker 1: talking because they don't feel part of it.
[8:40] Speaker 3: I hate when the room's too hot.
[8:43] Speaker 1: That's why I always say comedy is a winter sport, Montreal, Edinburgh, Melbourne,
[8:47] Speaker 1: Comedy capitals, cold cities, Yeah, Adelaide for inso On. I
[8:51] Speaker 1: did a forty four degree day last year and it
[8:53] Speaker 1: was a matinee and it was like black ten And
[8:56] Speaker 1: then I realized I just had to show you. It's
[8:58] Speaker 1: that I'm working fifty times hard for the payoff because
[9:01] Speaker 1: I'm so I couldn't believe that they were there.
[9:03] Speaker 3: Do you get quite sweaty if you're.
[9:04] Speaker 1: Like yeah, and then if I'm under the palm, like
[9:07] Speaker 1: it would be like if I was interrogated by the police,
[9:10] Speaker 1: that'd be like least sweating. He's done it because I
[9:11] Speaker 1: I can't hide it.
[9:13] Speaker 2: Yeah, I could see.
[9:14] Speaker 4: I could see like sweat coming down your nose.
[9:18] Speaker 1: I was so through.
[9:19] Speaker 3: I would love to see that.
[9:22] Speaker 1: That's so nice. Thank you A bittersweet he's sweating? What's
[9:26] Speaker 1: happening in a bittersweet?
[9:27] Speaker 4: Oh? Bittersweet? Oh?
[9:28] Speaker 3: I had a rough year.
[9:31] Speaker 4: And then my granddad got sick, and I guess it's
[9:34] Speaker 4: sort of about like the good.
[9:36] Speaker 3: Times and the bad time.
[9:37] Speaker 1: You were very close to.
[9:38] Speaker 4: Right, Yes, I'm very close to him. I think I
[9:41] Speaker 4: need to make some changes. I know that I'm here
[9:42] Speaker 4: to promote the show. We'll workshop it well because I
[9:45] Speaker 4: you know, I was doing the show and then I
[9:48] Speaker 4: wrapped up at the end of Comedy Festival, and then
[9:49] Speaker 4: I was I'm doing some encore shows around you know.
[9:52] Speaker 1: Yes, You're doing Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Bendigo and Newcastle. I
[9:56] Speaker 1: love Newcastle.
[9:56] Speaker 3: I love Newcastle too. It's so good.
[9:59] Speaker 4: But there's been an a so my granddad has He's
[10:01] Speaker 4: passed away since the show finish. So I think I
[10:03] Speaker 4: need to update it. But I'm not sure if I'm
[10:05] Speaker 4: like ready to or not. But the show had a
[10:08] Speaker 4: good ending anyway. But I just thought, you know, it's
[10:10] Speaker 4: nice to have the show feel like real and updated.
[10:13] Speaker 4: So I think I might just like have a little
[10:14] Speaker 4: tid bit at the end of like something fun that
[10:16] Speaker 4: happened when we were up there. I really liked doing
[10:18] Speaker 4: the show. I think it was like the I felt
[10:20] Speaker 4: like it was the best show I've ever done. So
[10:21] Speaker 4: I'm excited to do it again and hopefully add some
[10:25] Speaker 4: other fun memories. I don't want to cry, you know,
[10:28] Speaker 4: so I got to try and keep it. I want
[10:29] Speaker 4: to keep it light and fun. Granddad he hated he
[10:33] Speaker 4: hated people showing emotion in public, so I got to
[10:36] Speaker 4: do it for him.
[10:38] Speaker 1: You were so good live. You can get tickets from
[10:41] Speaker 1: Daniel Walker dot com today. You's a bit of sweet
[10:43] Speaker 1: like Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Bendig and Newcastle. You're truly one
[10:47] Speaker 1: of the best. Thank you for going by such. I
[10:49] Speaker 1: always have such a love talking to you.
[10:51] Speaker 3: Me too, I love talking to you too, Joel.
[10:54] Speaker 2: This is the Joel Creasy Show.
[10:57] Speaker 5: Time to read up on all the hard gods in
[11:00] Speaker 5: the world of showbiz from an actual scroll delivered straight
[11:04] Speaker 5: to Joel Studio.
[11:05] Speaker 1: It's Joel's Scroll up day Mount Casina. I know I've
[11:10] Speaker 1: already texted and told you this. He was so good
[11:12] Speaker 1: on the Lokis.
[11:13] Speaker 6: Oh that's so lovely. I had a post event come down,
[11:17] Speaker 6: you know when.
[11:17] Speaker 1: You've Yeah, it's such a build up.
[11:19] Speaker 5: Yeah, Like it's like a wedding ride where you've got
[11:21] Speaker 5: your dress to sort out, you look to sort out,
[11:23] Speaker 5: you do the night, you have so much fun, and
[11:25] Speaker 5: then the next.
[11:25] Speaker 6: Day you just feel really depressed.
[11:26] Speaker 5: Yeah, And so that text was so needed because I
[11:29] Speaker 5: was questioning everything where I was like what did I say?
[11:32] Speaker 6: Yeah, thank you?
[11:34] Speaker 1: Oh, you're welcome. You know, I'm such a nerd for
[11:36] Speaker 1: all that stuff and TV presenting, and you just told
[11:39] Speaker 1: yourself with such poise, got such grace.
[11:42] Speaker 6: Do you think I do feel like I'm gracious at all?
[11:45] Speaker 1: Really?
[11:45] Speaker 6: Yeah, I feel like I just like stomp around. But
[11:48] Speaker 6: that's really nice. Thanks.
[11:50] Speaker 1: You're a sheep operator, pleasonous. This is so called Rosie
[11:54] Speaker 1: o'donald is guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live, making her talk
[11:57] Speaker 1: show return. She looks sensational. She was wearing this like
[12:00] Speaker 1: hot pink, like cowboy esque blazer back where she belongs now.
[12:05] Speaker 1: She started her monologue by saying, peace and if you.
[12:08] Speaker 4: Thought the President hated Jimmy Kimmel Live when it was
[12:11] Speaker 4: hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, blah, people.
[12:17] Speaker 1: I can guarantee Trump was in the what do they
[12:21] Speaker 1: call it, the residents in the White House. He wouldn't
[12:23] Speaker 1: have missed wherever Milania wasn't He is obsessed with Rosie?
[12:32] Speaker 2: Is he is? He?
[12:32] Speaker 6: Actually?
[12:33] Speaker 4: Oh?
[12:33] Speaker 6: Yeah, because of how it's spoken.
[12:34] Speaker 4: She is.
[12:35] Speaker 1: Yeah, even before he was president, or even like in
[12:39] Speaker 1: the running when she was a host in the view.
[12:41] Speaker 1: That's filmed in New York, and yeah they had for me.
[12:45] Speaker 5: Gosh, love, imagine imagine the Prime the President being so.
[12:50] Speaker 6: Obsessed with you.
[12:52] Speaker 1: Why are you?
[12:52] Speaker 6: Why are you so obsessed?
[12:56] Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. I saw a rumor that she was
[12:58] Speaker 1: going to be one of the new cast mats of
[13:00] Speaker 1: Housewives of Beverly Hills. Sent it to Jack Charles. It's
[13:02] Speaker 1: not true.
[13:03] Speaker 5: Oh okay, that would have been pretty good. But no,
[13:05] Speaker 5: I don't think she would do a reality TV. I
[13:07] Speaker 5: think what makes her so good is being a loof.
[13:09] Speaker 1: Yeah until Christmas time and yeah Frost. Yeah. Carl Stefanovick,
[13:14] Speaker 1: he was not at the Logi's, but he is. He
[13:18] Speaker 1: is set to make his first move into stand up comedy.
[13:21] Speaker 1: He's set to open for a comedian, Isaac Butterfield at
[13:24] Speaker 1: an upcoming Sydney show.
[13:26] Speaker 5: Surely that doesn't feel like okay, so Joe, you're a comedian.
[13:30] Speaker 6: Yeah, allegedly, I've seen your stuff, so you're right.
[13:36] Speaker 1: Now.
[13:37] Speaker 5: Karl Stefanovic, would you picture him or pick him to
[13:40] Speaker 5: be a comedian?
[13:41] Speaker 1: I mean, of the morning announcers, he was kind of
[13:44] Speaker 1: always the Larican and actually once when I went on there,
[13:47] Speaker 1: he did a stand up spot for me when I
[13:50] Speaker 1: was promoting the show was a whole thing, like they
[13:52] Speaker 1: had rioters and stuff. So he's I guess he has
[13:55] Speaker 1: done it before, because.
[13:56] Speaker 6: That's the thing.
[13:56] Speaker 5: You can be entertaining and you can be funny, but
[13:58] Speaker 5: being a stand up is friend. It's a different set
[14:01] Speaker 5: of skills, and it's creating a show, and it's holding
[14:04] Speaker 5: an audience, and it's having things that make sense and
[14:08] Speaker 5: a story. I think it's a completely different People underestimate
[14:11] Speaker 5: stand up comedy.
[14:12] Speaker 1: Yeah, well, thank you. Well, I mean it'll be interesting
[14:15] Speaker 1: what this guy. I mean, I'm not really across him,
[14:17] Speaker 1: Isaac Butterfield. I don't know a whole you know, I'm
[14:20] Speaker 1: not great on other stand ups, but I think the
[14:23] Speaker 1: real test would be going to do a comedy club.
