[0:02] Speaker 1: It's now time to welcome the people's prince.
[0:08] Speaker 2: Part-time professional third wheel. Here we go.
[0:11] Speaker 3: From Broadway to West End, TV presenter to actor, he'll
[0:15] Speaker 3: go to the opening of a door.
[0:18] Speaker 4: Joe Creasy, desperation.
[0:21] Speaker 2: Get ready. Yes!
[0:23] Speaker 3: It's Joe Creasy. Joe Creasy! With the Joe Creasy Show.
[0:32] Speaker 4: Happy Tuesday. It is the 20th of October. Hard day
[0:35] Speaker 4: to celebrate a birthday on a Tuesday. That was me
[0:37] Speaker 4: this year. But it is Vice President Kamala Harris' birthday today.
[0:41] Speaker 4: She's turning 62. And Snoop Dogg turning 55. And we
[0:45] Speaker 4: just discovered his full name is Calvin Cordoza Broadus Jr.
[0:49] Speaker 4: Happy birthday, Calvin. Coming up today, as I said yesterday,
[0:52] Speaker 4: I was lucky to meet the cast of The Castle.
[0:54] Speaker 4: The iconic 1997 film has been rewritten as a stage play.
[0:59] Speaker 4: And I spoke to one of the actors, Joel Jackson.
[1:02] Speaker 4: The Kerrigans are one of Australia's most beloved family, them
[1:05] Speaker 4: and the Day Knights. And Joel is playing Wayne, the
[1:09] Speaker 4: eldest brother. And I cannot wait to see the show
[1:11] Speaker 4: come to life on stage next year. It is going
[1:13] Speaker 4: to be epic if you can get a ticket.
[1:15] Speaker 3: This is The Joel Creasy Show.
[1:18] Speaker 4: And yesterday, the actors bringing to life the stage adaptation
[1:21] Speaker 4: for The Castle were announced. I got to see it
[1:24] Speaker 4: all and chat to Joel Jackson, who will be playing
[1:27] Speaker 4: the eldest brother, Wayne. Kerrigan. I went and did this
[1:31] Speaker 4: chat ahead of the big announcement yesterday morning. So let's
[1:34] Speaker 4: jump into that now. Joel Jackson, this is very exciting.
[1:38] Speaker 4: The castle launching on stage.
[1:40] Speaker 2: It's just the best. It is so unique. And it's
[1:42] Speaker 2: also just so exciting to finally be able to share
[1:45] Speaker 2: our involvement in it. It's just so exciting, man. Yeah,
[1:48] Speaker 2: it's wonderful.
[1:49] Speaker 4: Are you from Albany?
[1:50] Speaker 2: I'm from Albany, yeah, yeah.
[1:51] Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, okay, we're both Joel's from Perth. Yeah, yeah.
[1:53] Speaker 2: WA. WA boys, yeah. Yeah. Which is the best. So
[1:55] Speaker 2: Albany born, Karratha raised. I know I'm going to get
[1:58] Speaker 2: a lot of, like, I'll get. Karratha. I'll get hate
[2:01] Speaker 2: if I don't say I'm from Karratha as well.
[2:03] Speaker 1: Really?
[2:03] Speaker 2: Which I love. Yeah, yeah.
[2:05] Speaker 4: So Karratha raised. Wow, that's really.
[2:07] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, two opposite poles.
[2:08] Speaker 4: A long way away.
[2:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, beautiful wall pole and all the gentle giants of
[2:12] Speaker 2: the treetops to like. absolute desert, middle of nowhere, where
[2:15] Speaker 2: Red Dog was made.
[2:16] Speaker 4: Oh, of course.
[2:17] Speaker 2: Yeah, so that was my first day on a film set,
[2:19] Speaker 2: was an extra on Red Dog.
[2:21] Speaker 4: Really?
[2:22] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[2:23] Speaker 4: And what was the dog like? Piece of work?
[2:24] Speaker 2: Piece of work, yeah. Yeah, did a tonne of stunts,
[2:26] Speaker 2: just went straight to its trailer, it was really frustrating. Yeah,
[2:29] Speaker 2: not enough kibble.
[2:30] Speaker 4: Do you remember seeing the cast for the first time?
[2:31] Speaker 4: Because it came out in 1997.
[2:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, I was around, no, yeah.
[2:35] Speaker 4: Same year as Titanic came out.
[2:36] Speaker 2: Really?
[2:36] Speaker 4: Very similar films.
[2:37] Speaker 2: Are you serious?
[2:38] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[2:38] Speaker 2: I've never seen Titanic start to finish. I'm waiting for
[2:42] Speaker 2: the right time.
[2:43] Speaker 4: What does that mean?
[2:44] Speaker 2: I don't know. I've kind of seen it up to
[2:46] Speaker 2: a point and then gone, yeah, okay. Spoiler alert, it
[2:49] Speaker 2: goes down. Because I was too obsessed with the casting.
[2:50] Speaker 2: It breaks, you know.
[2:51] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[2:52] Speaker 4: But this is a good story.
[2:53] Speaker 2: Now, I remember, I can't remember watching it for the
[2:55] Speaker 2: very first time, but I remember seeing it, I remember
[2:57] Speaker 2: vividly being at my nan and pop's house in Albany,
[3:00] Speaker 2: like the big fuzzy carpets of the 80s and kind
[3:03] Speaker 2: of stuff and all that really old decor that was
[3:05] Speaker 2: mirrored in the film and being rugged up in your
[3:09] Speaker 2: dressing gown and just watching them have the best time
[3:12] Speaker 2: and slowly coming to understand it and growing into it
[3:15] Speaker 2: and understanding that feeling of family, like fighting for your castle,
[3:19] Speaker 2: like doing whatever it takes to stand up for family
[3:22] Speaker 2: and standing up for a stranger in your community, like
[3:24] Speaker 2: taking care of your street. So yeah, yeah. It's beautiful.
[3:27] Speaker 4: I love that you're a Joel from WA. And I'm
[3:29] Speaker 4: a Nan and Pop person too. I always said Nan
[3:31] Speaker 4: and Pop also.
[3:32] Speaker 2: Nan and Pop. Granny and Grandad. Mum and Dad have
[3:35] Speaker 2: done a split. Nanny and Grandpa. But that's okay. We'll
[3:38] Speaker 2: toe the line.
[3:39] Speaker 4: My dad wanted to be Nonna when he had his
[3:42] Speaker 4: first grandchild. I was like, Dad, that's female Italian. Grandma,
[3:46] Speaker 4: like you can't... He's special.
[3:50] Speaker 2: My future mother-in-law wants to be Queenie and I've just
[3:53] Speaker 2: put a real thumbtack in that and I'm just going
[3:55] Speaker 2: to put it in a very dark place and never
[3:57] Speaker 2: let her be Queenie.
[3:58] Speaker 4: That's what people heckle at me out of cast.
[4:00] Speaker 2: Really?
[4:00] Speaker 4: Yeah, that's one of the better ones. So you're playing
[4:04] Speaker 4: Wayne Kerrigan.
[4:05] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[4:07] Speaker 4: What a... Explain to me the role, or explain to
[4:09] Speaker 4: everyone the role that, you know, horrified if people don't
[4:12] Speaker 4: know the cast.
[4:13] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[4:14] Speaker 2: Wayne, I think, is one of those characters where when
[4:16] Speaker 2: you're watching the film, you may have just gone, oh,
[4:18] Speaker 2: I like that line, but you've kind of forgotten him
[4:20] Speaker 2: in the mainstream of things. But he grounds everything in
[4:23] Speaker 2: such a beautiful way because he has made mistakes. But
[4:26] Speaker 2: despite all of that, the family loves him unconditionally. There
[4:29] Speaker 2: is this kind of tie in that I think is
[4:31] Speaker 2: so true to the quintessential Australian family where like love,
[4:34] Speaker 2: forgiveness and taking care of each other, no matter what
[4:37] Speaker 2: really ties in. But he grounds it in the sense
[4:40] Speaker 2: of like, you've just got to keep moving forward. And
[4:43] Speaker 2: all he's looking forward to is getting out And then
[4:45] Speaker 2: as soon as he does, he makes good of life.
[4:48] Speaker 2: And he's got some of the best lines and so simple.
[4:50] Speaker 2: He's got three scenes in the entire thing, which I love.
[4:53] Speaker 2: I won't be doing.
[4:54] Speaker 4: Just three scenes.
[4:54] Speaker 2: We'll be doing a little bit more on stage, but
[4:56] Speaker 2: I can't tell you too much. But it's a really
[4:59] Speaker 2: beautiful character to be able to do, especially following in
[5:01] Speaker 2: the footsteps of someone like Wayne Hogue.
[5:04] Speaker 4: Yeah, legend.
[5:05] Speaker 2: Like legend, absolute legend. So I think I'll be, yeah,
[5:10] Speaker 2: making sure I do a pretty good job opening night
[5:12] Speaker 2: if he comes backstage. Yeah.
[5:14] Speaker 3: The Joel Creasy Show.
[5:16] Speaker 4: I heard you say I'm jealous for what audiences get
[5:17] Speaker 4: to experience.
[5:18] Speaker 2: Yeah. Tell me.
[5:20] Speaker 4: I'll be the audience.
[5:22] Speaker 2: Hopefully. I'll be there. Yeah, please come. It's going to
[5:26] Speaker 2: go off. Look, I think what's happened is this is
[5:29] Speaker 2: 30 years in the making. By the time we get
[5:31] Speaker 2: on stage, it's going to be 30 years. Incredible. The anniversary.
[5:34] Speaker 2: So the fact that it has now reached 30 years
[5:38] Speaker 2: of Australians all across the board of all different ages,
[5:40] Speaker 2: of all different spectrums and places and people and in
[5:43] Speaker 2: all different ways of life and walks of life to
[5:46] Speaker 2: now take it to the stage and try to bring
[5:48] Speaker 2: what we do best on the stage and share that
[5:51] Speaker 2: with an audience in a whole new way by elevating
[5:53] Speaker 2: the story, not by necessarily turning it and adapting it
[5:56] Speaker 2: into something wild and crazy and taking it and spinning
[5:59] Speaker 2: it to something you don't know. We want to place
[6:01] Speaker 2: it right back into your heart, right back into that
[6:04] Speaker 2: piece of nostalgia while elevating it to something that only
[6:07] Speaker 2: can be done on stage. And you know that we
[6:10] Speaker 2: like Jonathan Oxlade, Paige Rattray, we've got Clemence Williams, who
[6:13] Speaker 2: was Tony-nominated composer. You know, like, it's remarkable. And, yeah,
[6:19] Speaker 2: I mean, Castle doesn't miss. Working Dog doesn't miss. So
[6:22] Speaker 2: it's going to be very, very special.
[6:23] Speaker 4: The Castle, at its core, it's about family and home. Yeah.
[6:27] Speaker 4: Is your fiancée on Broadway?
[6:29] Speaker 2: She is, yeah.
[6:29] Speaker 4: That's very cool.
[6:30] Speaker 2: Romy's crushing it. Romy's living the dream. Romy Vuxen, say
[6:33] Speaker 2: her name, she is incredible.
[6:35] Speaker 4: Oh, I've seen her in many a program.
[6:36] Speaker 2: Have you? Yeah.
[6:37] Speaker 4: She's the best, man.
[6:38] Speaker 2: Yeah. We figured out that we had been watching each
[6:40] Speaker 2: other on stage... for about eight years. So either she'd
[6:43] Speaker 2: been on stage and I'd been in the audience, or
[6:45] Speaker 2: I'd been on stage and she was in the audience,
[6:47] Speaker 2: and we'd never met. And then we met on the
[6:49] Speaker 2: streets of Melbourne while they were rehearsing Anjuliette. I was
[6:52] Speaker 2: waiting for Rob Mills, and he's always 15 to 20
[6:55] Speaker 2: minutes late.
[6:57] Speaker 4: God bless Rob Mills.
[6:58] Speaker 2: And out walked Romy, and she has just continued to
[7:01] Speaker 2: go from incredible opportunity to incredible opportunity. And we've been
[7:06] Speaker 2: doing long distance now for like two years. But finally...
[7:11] Speaker 2: She'll get a chance to come and see me do
[7:12] Speaker 2: my thing on stage with this, which is very special.
[7:15] Speaker 4: It's going to be incredible. Congratulations. I cannot wait to
[7:18] Speaker 4: say I can't wait to be one of those audience
[7:20] Speaker 4: members that you're going to be jealous of.
[7:21] Speaker 2: Thank you, mate. And then come backstage to see all
[7:22] Speaker 2: the secrets.
[7:24] Speaker 4: Absolutely. You will not be able to get rid of me.
[7:26] Speaker 2: I'm just kidding. If you ask really nicely. We'll think
[7:29] Speaker 2: about it.
[7:29] Speaker 4: Just say the name Joel at Stage Door. 50 bucks
[7:31] Speaker 4: and Joel at Stage Door. Yeah, great.
[7:32] Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Thanks, Ian.
[7:34] Speaker 4: Thank you so much.
[7:35] Speaker 2: Thanks, Joel.
[7:36] Speaker 4: So exciting. The Castle is opening at Her Majesty's Theatre
[7:39] Speaker 4: in Melbourne from March 2027. Tickets on sale now at thecastleonstage.com.au.
[7:46] Speaker 4: A pleasure chatting to Joel Jackson from the cast.
[7:50] Speaker 2: Joel.
[7:51] Speaker 4: Yes, Jessica.
[7:52] Speaker 2: Creasy.
[7:53] Speaker 3: Creasy.
[7:54] Speaker 6: Grab your juice boxes and sit down for story time
[7:57] Speaker 6: with Joel's bestie from the Westie, Janelle Koenig.
[8:01] Speaker 3: Janelle's juice box.
[8:06] Speaker 4: Oh, I do love calling my best mate on a
[8:08] Speaker 4: Tuesday for a laugh. Hello, Janelle. Hello, babe.
[8:12] Speaker 1: Hello, babe.
[8:13] Speaker 4: I'm excited to see you on the weekend. Yes, you
[8:20] Speaker 4: get to lobby in the world's smallest apartment with Jack, myself,
[8:24] Speaker 4: and our grown dog slash woman girlfriend.
[8:28] Speaker 1: Oh, I am very proud to maintain my status as
[8:32] Speaker 1: the only woman girlfriend likes.
[8:33] Speaker 4: Yeah, that is correct. She is a judgemental bitch. How
[8:39] Speaker 4: are you otherwise? Yeah, that's true.
[8:42] Speaker 1: It's true. Babe, something mortifying happened again to me, of course.
[8:48] Speaker 4: Shock horror.
[8:50] Speaker 1: Yeah. So two weekends ago, I attended a ball at
[8:57] Speaker 1: Crown Perth for a charity that I'm an ambassador for,
[9:01] Speaker 1: the Kids Cancer Support Group. So great, amazing, amazing event.
[9:05] Speaker 4: I didn't know you do charity work outside of yourself.
[9:08] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[9:09] Speaker 1: LAUGHTER Outside of Phil, yeah. My partner.
[9:15] Speaker 2: I do.
[9:16] Speaker 1: I do a little bit of charity work. At the
[9:18] Speaker 1: end of the evening after all of the formalities had happened,
[9:20] Speaker 1: someone said to me, do you want to dance?
[9:25] Speaker 4: Oh, how very chivalrous and old school.
[9:30] Speaker 2: No, horrible.
[9:31] Speaker 1: I don't want to dance in public. I don't want
[9:33] Speaker 1: to dance in public looking in someone's eyes. I've known
[9:38] Speaker 1: you for over 15 years and we've never danced.
[9:42] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[9:43] Speaker 4: No.
[9:43] Speaker 1: We stood next to each other at Gaga while you
[9:46] Speaker 1: screamed at her.
[9:47] Speaker 2: Yeah, inappropriate.
[9:48] Speaker 1: And kind of swayed. But that's not dancing.
[9:51] Speaker 4: Yeah, I had a little bit of a meltdown.
[9:53] Speaker 1: I remember you kept screaming at Gaga, move to Richmond.
[9:56] Speaker 1: I know. And I was like, but you've moved to
[9:58] Speaker 1: the city, babe.
[9:59] Speaker 2: I know. I didn't even live in Richmond.
[10:01] Speaker 4: I was overcome. I was in the moment.
[10:05] Speaker 1: But I realise where my trepidation with dancing comes from.
[10:10] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[10:11] Speaker 1: And that is when I was single, I met a
[10:14] Speaker 1: bloke at Trades Hall and he said to me, do
[10:17] Speaker 1: you want to dance? And I was like, absolutely. And
[10:21] Speaker 1: he said, off you go then. This is a true story.
[10:27] Speaker 1: His name is Grant. That's his name. I'm going to
[10:30] Speaker 1: name and shame. And I was like, well, I will dance.
[10:34] Speaker 1: I will dance. And just as I got up, it
[10:37] Speaker 1: changed from like a generic white dance track to ACDC Thunderstruck.
[10:44] Speaker 1: And everybody cleared the dance floor and I had to
[10:46] Speaker 1: dance by myself to ACDC with the whole song. Honestly,
[10:54] Speaker 1: dance like no one's watching.
[10:56] Speaker 4: I wish no one was watching. So dancing with the
[10:58] Speaker 4: stars is off the cards then? I think so.
[11:02] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[11:03] Speaker 1: Dancing with the D-listers maybe.
[11:05] Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
[11:07] Speaker 4: Oh, that is mortifying. Mortifying. Yeah, I'm proud of you
[11:11] Speaker 4: for giving it a crack as always.
[11:13] Speaker 1: Thank you. You know I prefer a sit to a dance.
[11:16] Speaker 2: I know.
[11:17] Speaker 4: No one sits better. I'll see you on the weekend
[11:20] Speaker 4: to do plenty of it on my couch.
[11:22] Speaker 3: This is The Joel Creasy Show.
[11:25] Speaker 6: Time to read up on all the hot goss in
[11:28] Speaker 6: the world of showbiz from an actual scroll delivered straight
[11:32] Speaker 6: to Joel's studio. It's Joel's Scroll Update.
[11:37] Speaker 4: Hello, Natalie Locke. Oh, hello, Joel Creasy. You and I
[11:40] Speaker 4: have been right across the Kelly Clarkson saga over the
[11:43] Speaker 4: last week, but that's come to a... It's coming to
[11:46] Speaker 4: a close. I'm so sad.
[11:48] Speaker 5: I'm bereft is what I am, which is the greatest
[11:51] Speaker 5: thing to happen in pop culture in living memory. And
[11:54] Speaker 5: I don't say that lightly.
[11:55] Speaker 4: And great use of the word bereft. But, you know,
[11:58] Speaker 4: keep an eye out on your Christmas stocking because some
[12:02] Speaker 4: one Natalie Locke might be getting an animatronic singing bird.
[12:06] Speaker 5: Look, if somebody isn't popping those things, you're going to
[12:08] Speaker 5: be able to buy.
[12:08] Speaker 4: Them at Kmart next week for sure. Yeah, in the
[12:11] Speaker 4: middle section of Aldi. This is exciting. Lady Gaga. I'm
[12:15] Speaker 4: surprised as well as a Gaga fan that it's coming
[12:19] Speaker 4: this soon. Has teased new music might be on the
[12:21] Speaker 4: way after recently welcoming her first child with her fiance,
[12:25] Speaker 4: Michael Polanski.
[12:26] Speaker 5: Do we think it's going to go, she's going to
[12:28] Speaker 5: go like full wiggles and it's just all going to
[12:30] Speaker 5: be baby shark and stuff.
[12:31] Speaker 4: Like what is this? What's going to happen? Well, hey,
[12:33] Speaker 4: she's been able to nail every other genre. So I
[12:35] Speaker 4: would not be surprised. And I would, Listen to it,
[12:38] Speaker 4: consume it, go to the tour. A fan commented on
[12:42] Speaker 4: her TikTok saying, Gaga, please don't make us wait longer
[12:46] Speaker 4: and long for albums. We just want music. Every album
[12:48] Speaker 4: has been taking longer and longer, which, yeah. So put
[12:51] Speaker 4: that baby down, Gaga. Yeah, what else? Make music for us.
[12:55] Speaker 4: We don't care about the baby. We don't care about
[12:56] Speaker 4: the fiancé. We just care about the music. But she
[12:59] Speaker 4: did respond and said, don't worry, heart, heart.
[13:02] Speaker 2: Okay.
[13:03] Speaker 4: Oh, well, that says everything.
[13:04] Speaker 5: Yeah. It says everything it needs to say. I think
[13:06] Speaker 5: the evidence is there. So she's getting an animatronic singing
[13:09] Speaker 5: bird to do it?
[13:09] Speaker 4: I was going to say, this story really ain't no
[13:12] Speaker 4: animatronic singing bird, Molly, is it?
[13:13] Speaker 2: No.
[13:14] Speaker 4: Okay, try this one then.
[13:15] Speaker 5: So what I'm getting from that is that fans are
[13:18] Speaker 5: harassing a new mother to start.
[13:20] Speaker 2: Performing for them. Yeah. Yeah, okay, good. Just got it.
[13:22] Speaker 4: Just to be clear. We're Little Monsters and it's in
[13:25] Speaker 4: the title. Well, she created the monsters.
[13:27] Speaker 5: Correct.
[13:29] Speaker 4: Let's come back to haunt her.
[13:30] Speaker 2: Okay.
[13:31] Speaker 4: Rosie O'Donnell and Kristen Chenoweth, two people I didn't think
[13:34] Speaker 4: would be in the same sentence, are joining the cast
[13:37] Speaker 4: for a reading of a Dance Moms parody musical.
[13:42] Speaker 2: At last.
[13:43] Speaker 4: I know. It really makes sense.
[13:45] Speaker 5: I thought Dance Moms was a parody. Are you telling
[13:47] Speaker 5: me they were serious?
[13:48] Speaker 4: It's crazy.
[13:49] Speaker 5: What?
[13:50] Speaker 4: It's already a parody of itself. Rosie will play Abby
[13:53] Speaker 4: Lee Miller and Kristen is taking on the role of
[13:56] Speaker 4: Kathy Nesbitt-Steen. The team are trying to get funding to
[14:00] Speaker 4: bring the musical to life, but they're two big names
[14:02] Speaker 4: to sign on early days.
[14:03] Speaker 2: Yes.
[14:04] Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Full disclosure, Joel, please don't think of
[14:10] Speaker 5: me badly.
[14:10] Speaker 4: You've never watched Dance Moms.
[14:11] Speaker 5: I've never watched Dance Moms.
[14:13] Speaker 4: I like to tell people that you're a member of Mensa,
[14:16] Speaker 4: speak 10 languages. Yeah, that's... Hence, I've never watched Dance Moms. Yeah,
[14:19] Speaker 4: it really checks out. I'm not surprised you haven't seen
[14:21] Speaker 4: Dance Moms, but we'll go to the musical if it
[14:23] Speaker 4: does come. But interestingly about Rosie O'Donnell, I just saw
[14:26] Speaker 4: online that she was filling in for Rachel Dratch on Broadway,
[14:29] Speaker 4: who was playing the role of the narrator in Rocky Horror. Yes,
[14:32] Speaker 4: which you've done. Which I've done. And Rachel was nominated
[14:35] Speaker 4: for a Tony Award for it, which, great role. Why
[14:37] Speaker 4: weren't you?
[14:38] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[14:39] Speaker 4: I mean, you're reading. You don't even.
[14:40] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[14:41] Speaker 4: I'm like, what's she doing? That's so good. Like, it's
[14:44] Speaker 4: a good role, but it's not that good. Thank you
[14:47] Speaker 4: so much, Natalie Locke. Have a lovely day. You're always welcome.
[14:52] Speaker 3: The Joel Creasy Show is done.
[14:54] Speaker 2: But Joel's got plenty.
