[0:00] Speaker 1: Get ready.
[0:01] Speaker 2: Yes! It's Joel Creasy. Joel Creasy!
[0:05] Speaker 1: With the Joel Creasy Show.
[0:11] Speaker 2: Welcome to the Joel Creasy Show podcast today with Lynn McGranger,
[0:16] Speaker 2: Gold Loki winning Lynn McGranger herself, who for 33 years
[0:21] Speaker 2: played Irene on Home and Away. I don't remember a
[0:25] Speaker 2: time when Irene wasn't running the Summer Bay Diner. and
[0:29] Speaker 2: I think she left about a year ago. She cleaned
[0:32] Speaker 2: up in her final year, won the Gold Logie, finally,
[0:35] Speaker 2: and is the longest-serving female cast member on a TV
[0:41] Speaker 2: soap opera in Australia. She's an absolute icon. I've met
[0:44] Speaker 2: her plenty of times, and she's never, never failed to
[0:47] Speaker 2: make me laugh. She's really genuine and lovely, so down-to-earth.
[0:51] Speaker 2: I don't think realises just quite how famous she She is,
[0:54] Speaker 2: and if so, it certainly has not gone to her head.
[0:58] Speaker 2: And she's about to head off on a huge tour
[1:01] Speaker 2: through Australia with her comedy musical, her and several castmates,
[1:05] Speaker 2: which she elaborates on, and it sounds fantastic. I cannot
[1:07] Speaker 2: wait to see that on stage. And, yeah, always a
[1:10] Speaker 2: treat whenever I get the chance to talk to a
[1:12] Speaker 2: gold Logie winner, especially when it's someone as treasured as
[1:16] Speaker 2: the brilliant Lynn McGranger.
[1:19] Speaker 1: This is The Joel Creasy Show. As I live.
[1:22] Speaker 2: And breathe. The icon that is the one and only
[1:25] Speaker 2: Lynne McGranger joins me. Hello, Queen.
[1:28] Speaker 1: Oh, darling. Thank you. You're very kind. Thank you.
[1:33] Speaker 2: I was just saying, my gosh, you know, you joked
[1:35] Speaker 2: about retirement and then I looked at your dates and
[1:39] Speaker 2: you're hitting the road, Lynne.
[1:42] Speaker 1: I know. For the third time in three years. And
[1:48] Speaker 1: with a new grandparents club. But, yeah, I haven't really stopped.
[1:52] Speaker 1: And in the meantime, my daughter's given birth to twin girls.
[1:56] Speaker 1: So I'm a Gaga or a Nana for the first
[2:01] Speaker 1: time ever. And Paul's a Goo Goo or a.
[2:06] Speaker 2: Doo Doo or.
[2:06] Speaker 1: A Pa Pa or something. For the first time ever and, yeah,
[2:11] Speaker 1: they're only just three months old and so my life
[2:14] Speaker 1: has gone from zero to WTF in like the space
[2:21] Speaker 1: of a year or so. Fair enough.
[2:23] Speaker 2: My sisters have had three babies in maybe the space
[2:26] Speaker 2: of the last three years and I've become an uncle
[2:29] Speaker 2: and I didn't think I would love it so much.
[2:33] Speaker 1: Oh, no. And when they recognise your face and your
[2:37] Speaker 1: voice and their little faces light up, it's just delightful.
[2:42] Speaker 2: You feel like more of a, like for me, it
[2:45] Speaker 2: makes me feel like more of a rock star than
[2:46] Speaker 2: I have in my entire career, making those gorgeous children laugh.
[2:51] Speaker 1: Yes. And so how old are yours?
[2:54] Speaker 2: How old am I? So there's three, two and about a,
[2:59] Speaker 2: I was going to say four weeks old. Four weeks,
[3:01] Speaker 2: if that.
[3:02] Speaker 1: How old are yours?
[3:03] Speaker 2: How old are yours?
[3:04] Speaker 1: Mine, they were born two minutes apart. Wow. Stevie Grace
[3:09] Speaker 1: and Davy Joy.
[3:10] Speaker 2: They're great names.
[3:11] Speaker 1: Why just make Davy? Why don't you say Daisy? Stevie
[3:15] Speaker 1: Grace and Daisy Joy. So they like Stevie for a
[3:18] Speaker 1: girl's name and Daisy. And they are four months old
[3:25] Speaker 1: as of the 28th. Yeah, they're four months old. Oh,
[3:29] Speaker 1: in two weeks because they've got to get their jabs.
[3:33] Speaker 2: Oh, what's the jab they've got to have?
[3:35] Speaker 1: I think it's the triple antigen.
[3:37] Speaker 2: Oh, really?
[3:38] Speaker 1: The MMR, the measles, mumps, rubella. Oh, my gosh. I
[3:41] Speaker 1: don't know. No, no.
[3:42] Speaker 2: I've got to have my jabs too, but they're all
[3:44] Speaker 2: in my forehead. I've got to book that in actually.
[3:47] Speaker 1: I need them. Boy, I looked in the mirror the
[3:49] Speaker 1: other day and I went, whoa, that's moving a lot.
[3:51] Speaker 2: More than it used to. Although I've overdone it before
[3:55] Speaker 2: and I think I've told people this before, but I once,
[3:58] Speaker 2: when I was doing a stand-up tour, I kept getting
[4:00] Speaker 2: home each night and I was saying to my fiance,
[4:02] Speaker 2: I'm so tired. I don't know why. And then I
[4:05] Speaker 2: realised I'd had far too much. And I had to
[4:08] Speaker 2: triple the amount I moved on stage because there was
[4:10] Speaker 2: no movement in my face.
[4:14] Speaker 1: Oh, I love it. I love it. I mean, as
[4:16] Speaker 1: an actor, your face has to move, otherwise it stands
[4:19] Speaker 1: out like dogs' watsits, you know. Yeah, yeah. People are
[4:22] Speaker 1: looking at you going, shouldn't you be unhappy? I am.
[4:27] Speaker 1: And shouldn't you be happy now? I am. So you've
[4:30] Speaker 1: got to be real careful, I think. Yeah, yeah. Or
[4:35] Speaker 1: you look like you've been shot through the back of
[4:37] Speaker 1: the head because your eyes are really constantly wide open.
[4:41] Speaker 1: Or conversely, you look like an angry bird.
[4:43] Speaker 2: You know, because it's.
[4:45] Speaker 1: Sunk into your eyelids, both of which are alarming.
[4:50] Speaker 2: And shot through the back of the head, you know,
[4:52] Speaker 2: every chance that could happen in Summer Bay.
[4:53] Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, I know.
[4:56] Speaker 2: So Christmas in the Grandparents Club, which is touring like
[5:00] Speaker 2: literally all around Australia from November 1st It's a comedy.
[5:05] Speaker 2: It stars you, so you can be guaranteed that I
[5:08] Speaker 2: will be there. Oh, bless you, honey. What deliciousness am
[5:11] Speaker 2: I seeing?
[5:11] Speaker 1: Well, look, it's just a bunch of, you know, four
[5:14] Speaker 1: old codgers.
[5:15] Speaker 2: Heaven sold.
[5:19] Speaker 1: Acting the goat, singing, dancing, celebrating all things that are grandparents. Yes.
[5:26] Speaker 1: You know, people say, oh, but I'm not a grandparent. Well,
[5:28] Speaker 1: I get it. And I always say, well... You either
[5:32] Speaker 1: have grandparents or you are a grandparent or you know grandparents. Exactly.
[5:37] Speaker 1: It's not, you know, and the population's getting older. We're
[5:40] Speaker 1: all getting older. We're living to, you know, a longer,
[5:45] Speaker 1: you know, bigger age. And it's just very identifiable. And
[5:51] Speaker 1: it's the best fun, honestly, the best fun you can
[5:56] Speaker 1: have out of bed. That's what I say. That's what
[5:58] Speaker 1: I've been saying. I like it. I haven't been saying.
[6:01] Speaker 1: I just said it now for the first time in
[6:03] Speaker 1: my life.
[6:03] Speaker 2: Well, I like it, Lynne. Keep it up. But I'm
[6:04] Speaker 2: going to stick with it, yeah.
[6:05] Speaker 1: Yeah. But it is so much fun.
[6:07] Speaker 2: Well, okay, tell me, is this story in the show?
[6:09] Speaker 2: Because my one grandma, I did know Muriel, when she passed,
[6:13] Speaker 2: we spread her ashes around her favourite place, which was
[6:18] Speaker 2: the Dan Murphys in Mandurah, Western Australia. It's a true story.
[6:24] Speaker 1: Well, I think that's where they'll be sprinkling mine. And
[6:27] Speaker 1: mine will be up at Castle Hill.
[6:29] Speaker 2: Castle Hill Bottle-O.
[6:32] Speaker 1: The Castle Hill Bottle-O. But, no, we haven't got to
[6:36] Speaker 1: that stage yet. This one is celebrating Christmas. So, of course,
[6:41] Speaker 1: what goes wrong at Christmas? Well, let me think about it.
[6:43] Speaker 2: Everything.
[6:44] Speaker 1: Everything. So, you know, you've got people, you've got the
[6:48] Speaker 1: family coming, you've got the person that can't eat this
[6:52] Speaker 1: or can't eat that because they're gluten-free. I don't know
[6:55] Speaker 1: about you, but I like extra gluten on mine.
[6:58] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm like, shove it full of gluten, MSG, dairy,
[7:03] Speaker 2: I'll take it all.
[7:04] Speaker 1: Yeah, if it's got green in it, take it out.
[7:06] Speaker 1: I don't do anything green. No, but, you know, it
[7:11] Speaker 1: deals with that. It deals with the kids and their
[7:14] Speaker 1: demands and what they want and what is expected of
[7:17] Speaker 1: the grandparents. And, of course, there's always a problem, like
[7:21] Speaker 1: you get held up in the traffic or you get
[7:24] Speaker 1: held up at a holiday destination. Yeah, yeah. And in
[7:27] Speaker 1: the meantime... you have to make do with what's around you.
[7:31] Speaker 1: So in our case, we're down the south coast and
[7:36] Speaker 1: we're just sort of catching up as mates before we
[7:40] Speaker 1: all head off to go back to our homes for Christmas. And,
[7:44] Speaker 1: of course, there's this big praying on the highway. Nobody
[7:48] Speaker 1: gets hurt but it holds everybody up so we're stuck there.
[7:52] Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
[7:53] Speaker 1: And instead of being able to organise a show to
[7:57] Speaker 1: be put on for the people in the camping ground,
[7:59] Speaker 1: we have to put on the show ourselves.
[8:02] Speaker 2: Oh, I love this.
[8:05] Speaker 1: It's just a lot of great fun. And, look, it's mischievous.
[8:09] Speaker 1: It's a little bit naughty.
[8:11] Speaker 2: Well, I suppose so.
[8:12] Speaker 1: But it's family friendly. And we just have a ball, Joel.
[8:17] Speaker 1: It's great. It's great. I mean, it's called work, but
[8:20] Speaker 1: I don't consider it work because I just have such
[8:23] Speaker 1: a good time with my fellow cast members.
[8:25] Speaker 2: Well, isn't that the point, right? Work should never– yeah,
[8:28] Speaker 2: you've got it nailed if work doesn't feel like work.
[8:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, if it feels like a drudge. Yes. And this
[8:35] Speaker 1: never feels like a drudge. Don't get me wrong because
[8:38] Speaker 1: we're all getting on. We're all fairly buggered at the
[8:42] Speaker 1: end of the day after two shows. Yeah. But, you know,
[8:46] Speaker 1: just the excitement of it. It goes for 90 minutes. So,
[8:49] Speaker 1: you know, if you're a little older and your bladder's
[8:52] Speaker 1: a little unremarkable, that's okay. You've got 90 minutes to
[8:57] Speaker 1: hang on like grim death or wear, I don't know,
[9:01] Speaker 1: wear adult diapers.
[9:04] Speaker 2: I went and saw a friend in a show on
[9:06] Speaker 2: the weekend and it was fantastic. It was about three
[9:08] Speaker 2: and a half hours. And, yeah, I think I might
[9:11] Speaker 2: have a bladder infection. Yeah.
[9:15] Speaker 1: The Joel Creasy Show.
[9:16] Speaker 2: In Gold Logie Winner, Lynne McGranger's house, first of all,
[9:19] Speaker 2: where is the gold logie? And then what does Christmas
[9:21] Speaker 2: Day look like? Are you on the tools?
[9:25] Speaker 1: So my gold logie is with my silver logie. People
[9:28] Speaker 1: always talk about the gold and that's lovely. But for me,
[9:32] Speaker 1: the silver was such, I was blindsided by that. Because
[9:36] Speaker 1: I just, well, because it's kind of partially industry voted.
[9:40] Speaker 2: Yes.
[9:41] Speaker 1: And you're up against all these wonderful women. you know,
[9:45] Speaker 1: young and old that you admire and you just, you go, man,
[9:49] Speaker 1: one day when I grow up I might have that
[9:51] Speaker 1: amount of talent, you know. And so to win the
[9:55] Speaker 1: silver was extraordinary and the gold was lovely because it's
[9:59] Speaker 1: like a, an affirmation, if you like, of all the years,
[10:03] Speaker 1: of all the scenes you've done and you go, well,
[10:07] Speaker 1: I must have done something right because the audience loved
[10:10] Speaker 1: the character.
[10:11] Speaker 2: We all adore the character.
[10:13] Speaker 1: Because she's flawed and, you know, she's a bit of
[10:16] Speaker 1: a dick. And I like that. Yes. I like that
[10:20] Speaker 1: about her and I like that about people, you know. Yeah.
[10:24] Speaker 1: So it is on our– in our kind of TV,
[10:30] Speaker 1: you know, dining come, you know, the room. The room.
[10:33] Speaker 1: That runs off the kitchen. The room where everybody goes.
[10:37] Speaker 1: And it is– Next, well, either side of a photo
[10:43] Speaker 1: of my daughter and son-in-law.
[10:46] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[10:47] Speaker 1: And we've just changed it yesterday, funnily enough, to my
[10:49] Speaker 1: daughter when she was pregnant.
[10:51] Speaker 2: Yes.
[10:52] Speaker 1: With her babies. And it's right next to my 1974
[10:58] Speaker 1: Wagga Wagga Drama Festival Best Actress Award.
[11:03] Speaker 2: And that ain't going nowhere because I can imagine how
[11:05] Speaker 2: much that means to you.
[11:07] Speaker 1: Honestly, people at home can't see, I don't think, unless
[11:11] Speaker 1: they're watching. Hello. Honestly, it's probably no bigger than about,
[11:15] Speaker 1: I don't know, what's that in the new scale? I
[11:17] Speaker 1: would say five inches.
[11:18] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you.
[11:20] Speaker 1: Yeah. So it's probably, I can't do the math, maybe
[11:24] Speaker 1: about 10 or 12 centimetres tall. It's not very big.
[11:28] Speaker 1: It's certainly not a Logie.
[11:29] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[11:29] Speaker 1: But it means so much to me because it was
[11:32] Speaker 1: that that made me go, oh, maybe I can do this.
[11:35] Speaker 2: What were you playing? What was the show you were doing?
[11:38] Speaker 1: It was called, it was a play by Brian Freels.
[11:43] Speaker 1: It's kind of a double, two plays in one. The
[11:46] Speaker 1: play was called Lovers.
[11:48] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[11:49] Speaker 1: And it's winners and losers.
[11:51] Speaker 2: Okay.
[11:51] Speaker 1: And myself and a. A young man who sadly isn't
[11:55] Speaker 1: with us anymore, Mark Elliman, he and I were playing
[11:59] Speaker 1: two very young lovers set in the north of Ireland. Oh, wow.
[12:05] Speaker 1: And Maggie and I think his name was Joe. And anyway,
[12:11] Speaker 1: Maggie falls pregnant. Yeah. And they're sitting up, they're up
[12:13] Speaker 1: there on their bikes on top of the hill looking
[12:16] Speaker 1: down into Donegal and talking about the nuns and what
[12:19] Speaker 1: they're going to do when they find out. And, I mean,
[12:22] Speaker 1: it's sort of. It's bittersweet.
[12:24] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[12:25] Speaker 1: And the other one was an older couple. So we
[12:28] Speaker 1: were winners and the other couple were losers.
[12:30] Speaker 2: Oh, I see.
[12:30] Speaker 1: They'd been together forever but their relationship was not great.
[12:34] Speaker 1: So anyway, we just did the winners and we were winners.
[12:38] Speaker 2: And there's that award. I know those awards, they mean
[12:41] Speaker 2: the world to us.
[12:42] Speaker 1: They do.
[12:43] Speaker 2: Thank you, darling.
[12:44] Speaker 1: Yeah, totally.
[12:45] Speaker 2: Okay, so you're obviously in Australia for Christmas because you
[12:49] Speaker 2: would have done, like, because my parents are British, so
[12:52] Speaker 2: I've had a lot of cold Christmases, and you would
[12:55] Speaker 2: have done a few when you were doing Panto.
[12:57] Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely. I love it. I love it. I love
[13:01] Speaker 1: the way they celebrate Christmas.
[13:03] Speaker 2: Oh, it's so good.
[13:04] Speaker 1: The only thing I don't like is that there's not
[13:06] Speaker 1: much daylight in the day.
[13:08] Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, good point.
[13:08] Speaker 1: You know? Yeah. The sun rises at quarter to nine
[13:11] Speaker 1: and sets at quarter past four. Yeah. And if you're
[13:14] Speaker 1: up in York where we often are because my bestie
[13:18] Speaker 1: lives up there with her husband and, you know, the
[13:22] Speaker 1: sun in the middle of winter, honestly, you're lucky to
[13:25] Speaker 1: get six and a half, seven hours of daylight.
[13:28] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[13:28] Speaker 1: And it's kind of depressing. Oh, I know. Oh, I know.
[13:31] Speaker 2: Because you go, oh, it must be bedtime. Oh, no,
[13:33] Speaker 2: it's five o'clock. That said, I was just there a
[13:38] Speaker 2: couple of weeks ago and I will never laugh at
[13:40] Speaker 2: the UK again when they say they've got a heatwave
[13:43] Speaker 2: because I didn't believe that the UK could have a heatwave.
[13:45] Speaker 2: Holy shit.
[13:47] Speaker 1: Oh, no.
[13:47] Speaker 2: It was wild.
[13:49] Speaker 1: Like Bali. But because they don't have the infrastructure for it.
[13:55] Speaker 1: It's a bit like us here. If we get a
[13:57] Speaker 1: really cold snap, well, everybody's freezing.
[14:01] Speaker 2: Freaking out. It's 10 degrees.
[14:03] Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. But over there, they really don't have the
[14:08] Speaker 1: infrastructure for heat, and it's awful. And I think it's
[14:13] Speaker 1: ramping up again this week.
[14:15] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[14:16] Speaker 1: And honestly, you know, being deadly serious, I– and really
[14:20] Speaker 1: fearful of our summer this year. Yes. I think it's
[14:23] Speaker 1: going to be awful, you know. Yeah. Just with, well,
[14:28] Speaker 1: the amount of air conditioning you need to stay, you know,
[14:31] Speaker 1: not melted. Yeah. And, you know, just, oh, I'm not
[14:35] Speaker 1: a fan of the heat anyway.
[14:37] Speaker 2: Nor am I.
[14:38] Speaker 1: I just melt and bad hair. No, I get it.
[14:41] Speaker 2: I can't deal with bad hair. Yeah, I know. You
[14:43] Speaker 2: sit foot outside for one second and you're like, this
[14:45] Speaker 2: is fresh and now it's completely sweaty.
[14:48] Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Can you walk down the street in the UK, though?
[14:55] Speaker 1: Depends where I am. You know, you go to Ireland
[14:58] Speaker 1: and they're like, oh, to be sure, Irene from Home
[15:01] Speaker 1: and Away, you'll be coming back to my place for
[15:03] Speaker 1: a cup of tea.
[15:04] Speaker 2: But no, I won't.
[15:06] Speaker 1: Only they say it with an Irish accent.
[15:08] Speaker 2: I don't know what the hell that was. Better than
[15:11] Speaker 2: what I could do.
[15:12] Speaker 1: But they're just lovely. And the poms are the same, honestly.
[15:18] Speaker 1: They kind of, because my hair's different now too. Yeah.
[15:21] Speaker 1: Like it was very red and now it's, well, you know. Natural.
[15:24] Speaker 2: I like it, by the way.
[15:26] Speaker 1: Thank you. Some strange ladies just stopped me and went,
[15:30] Speaker 1: your hair is terrific.
[15:32] Speaker 2: Yeah, it is.
[15:32] Speaker 1: Like just outside this building. Oh, really? And I went,
[15:34] Speaker 1: thank you.
[15:35] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[15:35] Speaker 1: That's so kind. It looks great. Thank you. I'm very
[15:38] Speaker 1: happy with it. I would have done it years ago
[15:40] Speaker 1: if I'd have known it was going to be this easy.
[15:43] Speaker 1: But I've just got to open my mouth. Yeah. Like
[15:46] Speaker 1: just say hi or thank you or g'day and it's on.
[15:54] Speaker 1: They just– I must have a very distinctive voice because
[15:58] Speaker 1: they just know. And they're so lovely.
[16:01] Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, yeah, you were so famous. It's just wild. Like,
[16:06] Speaker 2: I don't know how. Like, you were so, so famous.
[16:09] Speaker 1: It's so ridiculous, though, you know, because I'm just a
[16:13] Speaker 1: dickhead from the hills.
[16:15] Speaker 2: I think that's also what comes with the love for,
[16:18] Speaker 2: I mean, obviously Irene and Lynne are famous, but the
[16:20] Speaker 2: love for Lynne, because I know you are a hoot
[16:23] Speaker 2: and you're just so sweet and divine and you just
[16:25] Speaker 2: happen to play one of the most iconic characters in
[16:28] Speaker 2: Australian TV history.
[16:29] Speaker 1: I've been so blessed, Joel, really blessed. And it's like, well,
[16:33] Speaker 1: I always say it's like winning the acting lottery. You know,
[16:36] Speaker 1: somebody goes, look, do you want to play this character?
[16:38] Speaker 1: She'll be really popular. You'll love it. And you can
[16:41] Speaker 1: have it for 33 years. Incredible. Okay. Sounds great. Thank you.
[16:46] Speaker 1: And what? You'll pay me. Woo-hoo.
[16:48] Speaker 2: Yeah. Because I did a brief spell on Neighbours and
[16:52] Speaker 2: I love asking anyone that's done these shows. the craziest
[16:55] Speaker 2: storylines because I was the local gay stalker who then
[16:58] Speaker 2: got promoted to the local wedding planner who forgot to
[17:01] Speaker 2: book a wedding venue. And then I became the local–
[17:06] Speaker 2: I hosted Fashion Week in Erinsborough, but it turns out
[17:09] Speaker 2: I was money laundering the whole time.
[17:11] Speaker 1: And were you the one person doing all those things?
[17:15] Speaker 2: Yeah, the one person.
[17:16] Speaker 1: Okay.
[17:16] Speaker 2: Shocking. What was it like? What was the day when
[17:18] Speaker 2: you went, oh, Irene, she's doing this? Okay.
[17:22] Speaker 1: Oh, there was a couple of them.
[17:25] Speaker 2: Please, tickle me.
[17:27] Speaker 1: Okay. So there was way back, there was one where
[17:29] Speaker 1: they decided to make Irene into a clairvoyant. which is
[17:36] Speaker 1: more Marilyn's gig, you know, lovely Emily Simons who plays Marilyn.
[17:40] Speaker 1: Suddenly I'm a soothsayer and I thought, oh, you know what,
[17:45] Speaker 1: I think they're running out of ideas really. So that
[17:48] Speaker 1: didn't fly for very long, thank God. But then on
[17:52] Speaker 1: the serious side there was one where I remember lovely
[17:57] Speaker 1: Courtney Miller was playing Belle and And she'd been groomed online. Yeah.
[18:02] Speaker 1: This was probably about five, eight years ago. Yeah. Yeah,
[18:06] Speaker 1: maybe five, six. And anyway, I'd gone to Sam Frost's
[18:12] Speaker 1: character's wedding. Okay. Like Irene had gone.
[18:16] Speaker 2: Yes.
[18:16] Speaker 1: Came home and this guy is attacking Belle. And so...
[18:21] Speaker 1: Ira picks up a bottle of champagne. I don't know
[18:24] Speaker 1: what that was doing there. She's an alcoholic. But maybe
[18:28] Speaker 1: the girls had drinks before the wedding.
[18:31] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[18:32] Speaker 1: But it was conveniently there anyway. Bludgeoned him a bit
[18:35] Speaker 1: with that and then he came out of the bedroom
[18:39] Speaker 1: and then I picked up the lamp and bludgeoned him
[18:42] Speaker 1: with that as well. And so he ends up in
[18:47] Speaker 1: a wheelchair with a neck brace, you know, and of
[18:50] Speaker 1: course it was bunged on. And so Irene nearly went
[18:55] Speaker 1: to jail for attempted murder. Attempted murder. And then out
[19:00] Speaker 1: of that came all of this storyline that kind of
[19:03] Speaker 1: spiralled that she'd been attacked when she was 15 and
[19:07] Speaker 1: she'd had a son. who lived over in Perth, played
[19:10] Speaker 1: by the lovely Christian Smith. Oh, yes. A gorgeous man,
[19:14] Speaker 1: gorgeous actor. And so he came and he abducted somebody's
[19:19] Speaker 1: daughter because, oh, my God, it was just the most
[19:23] Speaker 1: convoluted storyline. But it had such mileage, such mileage. It
[19:29] Speaker 1: went on for months. I was exhausted at the end
[19:33] Speaker 1: of it. Anyway. It's so funny. Yeah, those two stand
[19:37] Speaker 1: out in my mind. But one was totally bizarre and
[19:40] Speaker 1: one was really deadly serious. And kind of apt given,
[19:45] Speaker 1: you know, grooming online. Yeah, 100%. Yeah, very, very apt grooming.
[19:50] Speaker 1: you know, given the situation now. But just kept going
[19:54] Speaker 1: off on this tangent and that tangent. I'm like, somebody
[19:57] Speaker 1: give me a break.
[19:59] Speaker 2: I totally get it because I voice a character in
[20:02] Speaker 2: a kid's show and the other day, because we take
[20:04] Speaker 2: it seriously, you know, this is our job. Me and
[20:06] Speaker 2: four adults are standing around. I voice the character of
[20:08] Speaker 2: a lime called Lime. And we're like, what noise would
[20:11] Speaker 2: a lime make if he had just been sent to
[20:13] Speaker 2: outer space by two talking chocolate bars? And we had
[20:18] Speaker 2: a serious five-minute conversation about that. Is it ooh or
[20:21] Speaker 2: is it ugh? And I went, this is absolutely ridiculous
[20:24] Speaker 2: and this is our job.
[20:26] Speaker 1: That's fantastic. But isn't it lovely that you're given the
[20:30] Speaker 1: leeway to use your imagination, to use, to go where
[20:35] Speaker 1: you may not normally go to. Yes, yes. Unless somebody goes, Joel,
[20:40] Speaker 1: pull it back a bit.
[20:41] Speaker 2: Well, I did get that on Neighbours too.
[20:43] Speaker 1: I don't think I talked. Welcome to my life. Welcome
[20:48] Speaker 1: to my life. If somebody says to me, and it's
[20:51] Speaker 1: only happened once or twice, I need it a bit bigger.
[20:54] Speaker 2: I'll go, what?
[20:57] Speaker 1: No, same, same. Okay, buckle up. Usually I just get,
[21:02] Speaker 1: bring it back. Yes. We had one director on Home
[21:06] Speaker 1: and Away who always used to say to Shane Whittington
[21:08] Speaker 1: and I that he would say, quicker and softer. And
[21:13] Speaker 1: I go, sorry, I only do slow and loud. Like
[21:16] Speaker 1: it or lump it, that's it. And Shane's the same.
[21:19] Speaker 1: But always, yeah, bring it back and tone it down.
[21:23] Speaker 2: Oh, my God, we get the same notes. Is there
[21:27] Speaker 2: a dream role that you go wonder? Because I like to,
[21:31] Speaker 2: you know, those roles, even that you know that you
[21:33] Speaker 2: couldn't play for whatever reason, that you lie in bed
[21:36] Speaker 2: at night and you go, But, you know, imagine if.
[21:39] Speaker 1: If only. I would have always liked to have played
[21:41] Speaker 1: Sweet Charity. Yeah. If I could dance better and sing better.
[21:46] Speaker 2: Oh, I've seen some productions where that clearly was more fun.
[21:49] Speaker 1: Didn't get in the way.
[21:50] Speaker 2: Love it.
[21:52] Speaker 1: Love it. I always wanted to play Cheryl the barmaid
[21:56] Speaker 1: in Priscilla. Yeah.
[21:58] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[21:58] Speaker 1: Yes. Yeah.
[21:59] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[22:00] Speaker 1: I love A Night Live. I've always wanted to play
[22:04] Speaker 1: that with the tennis ball boots.
[22:06] Speaker 2: I love it.
[22:07] Speaker 1: I love it.
[22:08] Speaker 2: I'll finance that production purely to see it.
[22:10] Speaker 1: And I'm probably, well, I am definitely long in the
[22:14] Speaker 1: tooth now, but I wouldn't have minded playing Shirley Valentine
[22:17] Speaker 1: back in the day. Oh, yes. Because I think Nat
[22:21] Speaker 1: Bass has just done it.
[22:22] Speaker 2: And she did it. She was remarkable.
[22:24] Speaker 1: Yeah, she's a wonderfully talented lady. I know. She's very, yeah, she's.
[22:30] Speaker 1: And I say this with love. She's surprisingly talented.
[22:33] Speaker 2: No, I know exactly what you mean.
[22:34] Speaker 1: I've always thought about her as being, you know, rogue traders.
[22:37] Speaker 1: Or X Factor judge, yeah. Yeah, a bit of a
[22:40] Speaker 1: rock star. But, man, that girl, he's got her acting chops.
[22:44] Speaker 2: Big time. I saw her. I was actually conveniently at
[22:47] Speaker 2: the closing night of Shirley Valentine's. I was like, oh,
[22:49] Speaker 2: am I at the after party? So that was a
[22:51] Speaker 2: great night for me. Stop it. Lynn McGranger, you are
[22:56] Speaker 2: a treasure and an icon. I just adore you. Thank you, darling.
[23:00] Speaker 2: You'll be starring in Christmas in the Grandparents Club around
[23:03] Speaker 2: Australia from November 1st. And yeah, you are just, you
[23:07] Speaker 2: are such a national treasure and so ever so funny
[23:11] Speaker 2: that I just, yeah, I can't. Enjoy you so much.
[23:15] Speaker 1: Oh, thank you, darling. That's very kind. Thank you for
[23:17] Speaker 1: having me on. And, yes, I'd love the listeners to
[23:19] Speaker 1: come and see it, even if you've seen the first
[23:21] Speaker 1: two because it's different. You know, same idiots, different storyline.
[23:26] Speaker 1: So come along and see us. You'll have a ball.
[23:28] Speaker 2: I'll be there and I'll be bringing a bunch of
[23:31] Speaker 2: idiots that I know. I love it. We'll get on
[23:33] Speaker 2: the wines and we'll be hooting and hollering for you, Lynne.
[23:36] Speaker 1: Love it, darling. Thank you.
[23:37] Speaker 2: Thank you.
